Summary
The lecture defends Orthodox veneration of the Theotokos and sacred icons, presenting her as one of the persons foretold before entering history. Jacob’s ladder, the burning bush, Aaron’s budding rod, the manna jar, the stone tablets, Gideon’s fleece, Ezekiel’s closed gate, and other Old Testament images are explained as types of the Theotokos. Stories of ascetics, warfare, and national suffering illustrate the Theotokos’s protection and the spiritual danger of rejecting her place in Orthodox life.

We presented the accounts concerning the saints of Ioannina—five stories, as we said. Then we came to speak more practically about the Theotokos. We said that she, too, has much to show us, and that she reveals how poor our faith is. I also spoke about icons of the Most Holy Theotokos not made by human hands, because she appears even before the Church was established. But since matters have taken this course, and since I wish to say more about the Most Holy Theotokos, I would like you to understand this: the person of the Theotokos is attacked not only by our adversaries. She is also attacked, unknowingly, by many of our own people, who say they are Orthodox but stumble over many things concerning her. I have already touched upon the subject of the icons of the Theotokos and related certain events from Tradition concerning the icons both of our Lord and of the Theotokos, to show that those today who attack the veneration of the holy icons are wrong. That is what I am trying to remind you of. But since the person of the Theotokos is being called into question, I now want to tell you some things that you may not have noticed. Four persons and one symbol stand before history itself. Holy Scripture, throughout the course of all human history...
Great and small, prominent and obscure—all people write their history from the day they are born until the day they die. We know them from the day they enter the world until the day they depart from it. But these four persons whom I am going to name are known beforehand, before they come. More specifically, concerning Jesus, we know when He will come, where He will come, and how He will come. The four persons and the one symbol that stand before history are the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Precious Forerunner, and the Precious Cross.
All of them! There are prophecies, symbols, and images concerning them. As for the person of the Most Holy Theotokos in particular, I dare say that, if we compare the prophecies and images of Christ with those of the Theotokos, we may perhaps find more concerning her. She is, of course, the moon, not the sun. Her light is reflected; she is not the Light itself. Yet she has her own place in the life of faith, and we Orthodox, at least—or those who once passed through Orthodoxy, whatever they may belong to today—ought to honor her. She cannot be dismissed as merely a woman, a good woman, some virgin, some Mary. She is not simply a woman, but the Woman. She is not simply a maiden, but the Maiden. She is not simply a virgin, but the Virgin. That, after all, is what the prophets call her: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive.” Not, “Behold, a virgin shall conceive,” but, “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive.”
The definite article marks the person as unique, just as Christ says, “I am the Light”—not merely a light, but the Light, the one and only Light. “I am the Life”—not merely life, but the Life. “I am the Way.” In every case, the person is presented as unique. You should think in the same way about the Most Holy Theotokos. So I would like to ask you: Do you know when the Most Holy Theotokos first enters the history of our faith? Many people think that the history of the Theotokos begins with Joachim and Anna. No, that is a mistake. When there are only two human beings upon the earth, Adam and Eve, God already speaks about the Theotokos. We shall find the Theotokos not first in the New Testament, but in the Old Testament, in the Book of Genesis—specifically, in Genesis 3:15. God has before Him the devil, Eve, and Adam, in the order through which sin and the Fall entered. Do you know what He said, and how He said it?
God says to Satan concerning the seed of a woman: “I will put enmity between you and her seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” The seed of a woman, He says, will crush your head, while you will bite His heel. His heel! Satan would bite His heel when Christ, according to His humanity, was crucified on Golgotha. But a man does not die because someone bites his heel. He does not die. This passage also speaks of conception without the seed of man, because a woman does not possess seed. Yet here it says, “the seed of the woman.” You may ask, “Which woman?” It speaks of a wondrous conception. After all, we know that the man begets and the woman gives birth.
We do not pay attention to the texts; we have not studied them. It says, “Abraham begot Isaac”; it does not name Sarah as begetting him. “Isaac begot Jacob”; it does not say Rebecca. “Jacob begot Judah and his brothers”; it does not say Rachel. Yet in Genesis, it speaks as though the woman possesses seed: “The seed of the woman,” God tells Satan, “will crush your head.” Who is this Woman?
Eve thought that she herself would give birth to the avenger, and for this reason she named her first child Cain, a name meaning “acquisition.” But she herself had not acquired freedom. It was another Woman whom God saw 5,508 years later, when she would enter the course of history.
This verse, Genesis 3:15, is the Protoevangelium, the first proclamation of the Gospel. Matthew is not the first Gospel in this sense. The first good tidings do not come from Matthew, who will tell us that Christ is to be born. They come from this passage. This is the Protoevangelium. The consolation of all nations and of the whole human race was contained in these words: that one day the serpent’s head would be crushed through this wondrous event. Satan, who knows how human birth takes place and everything connected with it, heard these words. There were no written Scriptures then, as you know, and so he always kept watch. Then, after many thousands of years had passed, we come to a little more than eight hundred years before Christ...
Isaiah writes in Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” Ah, Satan had not forgotten: here she is. And so Satan took his measures to ensure that no virgins would remain. When Christ came into the world, corruption may have been even greater than it is today. That was how the devil reasoned. But our Lord placed her in the Holy of Holies and guarded her there for eleven full years. Then He brought her out, appointed Joseph as her protector, accomplished His purpose, and deceived Satan. This is why, if you pay attention, all those outside Orthodoxy hate the Most Holy Theotokos even more than they hate Christ. Yet they, too, have mothers; even the women among them have mothers. And still they hate...
the Most Holy Theotokos more than Christ, although as women they ought naturally to feel some sympathy toward the Theotokos. Why? Do you know why? Because within the flesh she lent Him, she wrapped God Himself. The Paschal catechetical homily of John Chrysostom is beautiful and illuminating on this point, though at Pascha we fail to hear it because we are occupied with our soup and our stomachs. There it says that Hell took earth and encountered Heaven; it received a mortal man and came face to face with God. That is where Satan was defeated. This is why he hates the Most Holy Theotokos. And you see that the Catholics, despite all their claims, the Protestants, and all the others do not truly honor her. These people do not understand.
At least you should understand it. The Theotokos has the place in which the Holy Spirit set her: “The Queen stood at Your right hand, arrayed in a garment of gold, richly adorned.” Read Psalm 44, written by the Holy Spirit through David 1,050 years before Christ. This is the very verse recited when the priest or bishop performs the Proskomedia in our holy Church: when he removes the portion of the Theotokos and places it on the right, he says these words. The Most Holy Theotokos is at the right hand of our Lord, precisely where the Orthodox Church places her. She intercedes; she does not save. The Theotokos does not save—the Lord saves. She intercedes, as we say: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior...
save us.” Christ saves, and the Theotokos intercedes. She stands at His right hand. “The supplication of a mother has great power to win the favor of the Master.” The Most Holy Theotokos is a great person. She is a mighty help for the Christian, a truly mighty help. People do not know this. Perhaps they keep her merely as a decoration in their homes or on their icon stand, but they do not turn to her as a counselor.
What does the Latin West do with her? It raises her up, removes her from her proper place, lifts her above it, and makes her a god. And you know that Western Christians make the sign of the Cross with five fingers: the Holy Trinity, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Pope. Is the Theotokos God? No, she is not God. If she were God, and if she herself had been conceived without human seed, as Christ was, then why would we call her blessed? I would want you to be human, to possess all human weaknesses, to be conceived under all the conditions belonging to human nature, as David says: “In transgressions was I conceived, and in sins did my mother bear me.” That is precisely why your virtues have worth.
If you were conceived without human seed, you would not possess the downward inclination of fallen human nature. You might possess every other quality, but those virtues would have no value if you never had to struggle with this inclination. So some have raised her too high, while others have dragged her too low. Orthodoxy keeps her in her proper place, where the Holy Spirit has set her: interceding for us. This person, then, has been present in God’s plan from the foundation of the world. If someone wishes to trace chronologically the types, images, and prophecies concerning the Theotokos, he must next come to around 1,700 years before Christ. Jacob fled after deceiving his brother Esau and lay down to sleep somewhere out there, near Hussein Airport. The place where he slept is nearby. He placed a stone beneath his head, rested his head upon it, and saw the ladder...
which reached up to Heaven, with angels ascending and descending upon it. This ladder was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. In the canon that precedes the Akathist Hymn, our holy Church gathers together all these types. Anyone who reads that canon of the Akathist Hymn attentively can learn a great deal. The Most Holy Theotokos is the ladder by which God—Jesus—descended, because there is an exchange here for us human beings. The Theotokos became the ladder by which God descended and became man; and this same God, Christ, became the ladder by which we ascend. “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Outside Christ there is no salvation. There are no little side roads leading to the Kingdom of Heaven apart from Jesus. Jesus is the Way. He alone.
He is the Door. Through Him we shall enter and go out.
Here, then, we see this ladder. It is the ladder by which God descended, and it is a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. We meet her again around 1,500 years before Christ at Sinai, as the bush that burned but was not consumed. This is a type of the virginity of the Theotokos: she received the divinity within herself and was not consumed, just as the bush was not consumed—and that bush remains there to this day. It stands directly behind the holy church of Saint Catherine, beside the small chapel built by Saint Helen, the Chapel of the Holy Bush. The Holy Bush remains there to this day, as does the tree from which Aaron cut the rod that later budded. That budding rod is also a type of the Most Holy Theotokos.
A rod puts forth a bud; a virgin gives birth.
We may also turn to the jar containing the manna. What is the manna? It is a type of Christ. What is the jar? It is the Theotokos. That jar received the manna, while she received the heavenly manna. “I am the manna. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. Whoever eats of Me shall not die.” That ancient jar represents the Theotokos. If someone reads chapter seven of the Epistle to the Hebrews, where Paul writes to his own people about the types of the Most Holy Theotokos, he will find many such things within the tabernacle of testimony. And what are the tablets Moses received, upon which the Word of God was written? They are a type of the Theotokos. Moses fasted for forty days in order to bring down the Word of God written upon tablets of stone...
And we too fast for forty days—the forty-day fast—so that we may receive the Word of God incarnate from the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos. What else does that passage mention? It says that the golden censer was there. The censer was a type of the Theotokos, just as it is today. What is the censer? Have you ever wondered? What is it? Is it some kind of toy that the priests have brought in, so they can walk around putting on a show for us? Is that what it is? Everything that makes up the censer speaks and teaches. Its three chains represent the Holy Trinity. Its twelve bells represent the twelve Apostles. The lower part, the bowl, represents the womb of the Theotokos. And the One within it is Christ.
The incense that rises from it is the Holy Spirit. And when the priest takes the censer and holds it out before me, it is as though he were saying to you, “I believe this; do you believe it? I believe it; do you believe it?” This is among the meanings expressed when he censes and so forth. But whenever you see something like this, know that it speaks, know that it reminds us, know that it has something to say. There is nothing in our Church that does not speak and teach. And since I am speaking about the Theotokos, whenever you enter the Church—whether for Holy Matrimony, Baptism, or anything else—be attentive, because upon the Holy Table is the Most Holy Theotokos with Christ. The artophorion, in which the Orthodox Church preserves...
The artophorion contains the Holy Gifts, consecrated on Holy Thursday of last year for the urgent needs of the people of the parish. The artophorion, which bears Christ within it, is an image of the Most Holy Theotokos. That is how you should see her upon the Holy Table. And you, young lady, should not turn your back to the Holy Table just to see whether the train of your dress looks beautiful. You should stand there with reverent awe. Nor should you say that no Divine Liturgy is taking place. Christ is there with the Most Holy Theotokos—if we truly believe, if we have spiritual eyes with which to see, and do not simply close them to this beauty. There is also another image of the Theotokos, mentioned in the canon, if I remember correctly: “The dew-covered fleece, which Gideon foresaw.” That fleece was a type of our Most Holy Theotokos.
I do not know whether you are familiar with the story. If you open the Book of Judges in the Old Testament, you will read that God sent an angel to Gideon, a simple man who was threshing grain on his threshing floor in the summertime. The angel told him that God would make him a leader, so that he could gather and muster a small number of men for a military campaign. But out of humility, Gideon could not accept this. “Me?” he said. “Am I to do such things? Go on, get away from here.” The angel persisted: “I am an angel,” and so forth. “If you are an angel,” Gideon said, “then work a miracle for me.” God said, “What kind of miracle would convince you?” “Let the miracle be this: we will place a whole fleece of wool—the wool shorn from a sheep—on the threshing floor. And if, in the morning, the fleece is wet...”
“But if the threshing floor—all the rest of it—is dry, then,” he said, “I will believe that I truly have been commissioned and that you have been sent by God.” Morning came, and it was indeed so. They wrung out the fleece and filled a basin with water, while everything else was completely dry. Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain takes this event and explains it in this way: the dry threshing floor represents humanity under sin, utterly parched. The dew-covered fleece was our Most Holy Theotokos. She was within God’s plan and, in a certain sense, even the thought of her brought refreshment to God: the Theotokos would come, and then He would be able to send His Son.
He was sent when the fullness of time had come, and was born of a woman, born under the Law, and so forth.
Paul writes succinctly in Galatians 4:4: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman”—as we said earlier, not of a man—“born under the law,” and so forth. This, he says, was a type of the Theotokos; it prefigured the Theotokos, who in a certain sense consoled God, who desired the salvation of the human race. That is why the hymnographer says: “The dew-covered fleece which Gideon foresaw.” In the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah, the prophet sees her carrying our Christ in her arms into Egypt. He sees her as a light cloud bearing the God who transcends all. And these events, which took place at that time...
So that the Egyptians might know what had caused it: when Christ our God went into Egypt with our Most Holy Theotokos, all the idols of Egypt fell and were shattered, and the Egyptians did not know what had struck them. They went to consult the oracles and the like, trying to discover the cause, but they had all fallen silent. In other words, Satan gave them no answer as to what was happening. This event was recorded by Isaiah eight hundred years before Christ, in chapter 19, verse 1 and following. And Ezekiel—you have seen him in Byzantine iconography—you will find Ezekiel depicted with a gate behind him, a closed door at his back. This signifies the virginity of the Theotokos: through her God entered and came forth, and the gate remains shut.
Pay close attention to the Orthodox Church and to her hymnography, which is inspired by God and doctrinal in content. At Vespers on the feasts of the Most Holy Theotokos, you will hear the prophecies, and in them you will find all these things. For the Holy Spirit has gathered together, from one place and another, every passage in which the person of the Theotokos is revealed, and speaks of her. In the forty-fourth Psalm of David, one finds the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple—a feast which, unfortunately, the separated Christians do not celebrate. It depicts the Virgin with the other virgins following behind her; and, just as Orthodox hymnography and iconography do, it presents her accompanied by a retinue of Hebrews...
A procession... They accompany her into the sanctuary with lighted candles. This is how David depicts her in Psalm 44, in 1050 BC. An unquarried mountain: the stone was cut from it, yet nothing was taken away. And concerning the Theotokos, it is also written in Isaiah, chapter 66...
She will give birth before the labor pains come. You know that our Most Holy Theotokos gave birth without labor pains. Why? Because she conceived without pleasure. She conceived without pleasure and gave birth without labor pains. And Isaiah writes, “Before they come...” What is the word for labor pains in Katharevousa?
Before she who was in labor gave birth...
“A male child”—and indeed, she gave birth to a male child. The Most Holy Theotokos is a person beyond all explanation. In the sheer number of types, prophecies, and images associated with her, even our Christ does not equal her. And yet, even among us Orthodox Christians, she is often pushed to the margins. This happens because we are influenced by others or act out of ignorance, for Satan cannot bear the Most Holy Theotokos—not as a theological truth, not as a person, and not as an icon. Honor the Most Holy Theotokos. I remember a detail I read long ago. There was an ascetic who struggled against the devil for fifty-five years, wrestling with him hand to hand over temptations of the flesh.
So one day Satan appeared at the door of his hut, and the elder called to him from inside: “Look, we have grown old. You have grown old, and I too have grown old from struggling against you. Come now, go away. Leave me in peace; I will not give in.” Satan replied, “I will leave you only if you do something I tell you.” The poor man said, “I will do it.” “Throw away that piece of wood you have over there, and I will stop tormenting you.” What was that piece of wood? It was the icon of our Most Holy Theotokos. You see, he had rashly promised to do whatever Satan asked, and so he fell into the same trap as Herod did long ago, when he did not know what that woman, Herodias, would ask of him.
When he heard that he was being asked to throw away the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, he did not agree. “I will give you my answer in two days,” he said. That very night, the man rose and set out for the desert to seek a discerning man whom everyone knew and trusted, so that he could tell him about his mistake and the trap Satan had laid for him. “This is what happened to me,” he told him. “What should I do?” The ascetic replied, “You should not have been so quick to promise. You should first have found out what he was asking, and only then given your answer. But choose Hell with the Most Holy Theotokos rather than Paradise without her.” So he returned and repeated the ascetic’s words to Satan: “With this icon, I would rather go to Hell with the Most Holy Theotokos than live in Paradise without her.”
He did not do it. I am telling you this because the devil hates the person of the Theotokos. He does not want the Theotokos, for the reason I explained to you earlier. So if a person comes to understand this, he will be greatly benefited. This is especially true for you women. If you knew how to turn to the Theotokos and seek her help, you could help in so many ways: yourselves, your families, your husbands—everything. And before I move on, know that you can draw near to the Theotokos when you bake prosphora. The prosphoron is the Theotokos, and the woman who kneads it is Saint Anna.
Look at what the prosphoron has upon it, and then look at the movements you make. You take your prosphoron and bring it to the Church. What does the priest do with it? He takes it to the Prothesis, the table of oblation. And what is that Prothesis over there? It is Bethlehem. The Prothesis is Bethlehem. He takes the Most Holy Theotokos there to give birth. And whom does she bring forth there? Christ. The priest takes the Lamb out from within it—Christ. And yet many women, though they are able, may say they do not know how. They did not know how to make sweets, or how to cook, or even how to wash—and especially today, when we have so many comforts and conveniences, most homes do not have a small kneading trough and a little Athonite prosphora seal.
So when someone wants to offer a prosphoron in memory of a departed loved one, or for a name-day commemoration, as is proper and customary in our homeland, she orders it from a bakery, and it arrives here in a paper or plastic bag. She does not understand what she is doing. She should not only bake it herself, sanctifying her hands and her home, but, if possible, she should also bring it herself. For Joachim and Anna themselves brought our Most Holy Theotokos to the Temple; they did not send her with a delivery service or through the post. If you cannot do this, I do not condemn you. But know this: you will receive a great blessing from the Theotokos and from the Lord.
If you manage to learn how to bake a small loaf of prosphora, it does not have to be so large that we need to break down the door to bring it inside. Make a small, well-formed loaf that sits properly and that the priest can, so to speak, operate on. Many people bring us great puffed-up loaves that the priest cannot cut properly to remove the required particles for the Proskomedia, both for the departed and for the living. Perhaps, on another evening, her grace will grant us the opportunity to speak about that as well. You see how our Most Holy Theotokos is prefigured, and how she remains present as a type—even afterward, in the worship and practices of the Orthodox Church. And, of course, I want you to pay particular attention...
This is the place the Orthodox Church has given her. The Church does not offer a single prayer without saying, “Through the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos...” and so forth. Pay attention and you will see it. Call upon the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos—that is, approach Christ through her. This theoria, this spiritual understanding, does not mean that a person cannot say, “My Christ, help me,” or “My God, help me.” But when a person has humility, he acknowledges that he has no boldness to approach Christ directly, and so he goes through His Mother. This is humility, and also, we might say, an additional source of help, because “the supplication of a mother has great power to gain the Master’s favor.” We know this to be true. That is why I say that if we truly knew the person of the Theotokos, we would be different today. Even our faces would look different.
Those who fought in Albania in the recent war know the Most Holy Theotokos face to face. The others do not know her. In every difficult situation, the Most Holy Theotokos appeared among us to help us. But we did not always free her hands to act. Let me tell you something I have read, so that you may see her concern for us and also see our sin. After we had endured 180 years of slavery under the Turks, someone was granted a vision. In this vision, Heaven appeared, and the Church appeared. Christ Himself was at the Holy Altar, celebrating the Divine Liturgy. The Church was filled to overflowing with many...
...men dressed in white, with white beards, all praying. One elder among them went and entreated Christ for Greece, for the Greek people who were in bondage. But from the Lord there was neither voice nor response. He did not even take notice of him. The Lord seemed unmoved, although the elder remained there for a long time, kneeling and praying. The elder wept and withdrew to his place. He sat there for quite some time, as though deep in thought. Then he went to the Most Holy Theotokos, who was also standing on the left, fell at her feet, and said: ‘Lady of the Angels...’
‘You who were counted worthy to bear our Lord for nine months, you who nursed Him with your own milk, you who cared for Him and surely have such boldness before Him—will you not go and say a few words to Him for this Greek people, who have already endured 180 years of slavery?’ She said, ‘I saw you asking Him, and He did not turn toward you at all. Do you think He will turn toward me?’ Then the Most Holy Theotokos opened the left-hand door, the north door, entered the sanctuary, knelt beside the Holy Altar, and began to repeat what that venerable elder had said outside on behalf of the Greek people, adding her own pleas as well.
She tried to soften His heart, to speak with Him, so that He might give the command. For unless Heaven gives the command, no one is set free. Not even a shot is fired without Christ; we should know that. She continued pleading more and more deeply. After a long while, our Lord turned and said coldly, ‘The reason this nation was enslaved has not ceased to exist; and if it continues, its slavery will continue.’ The Most Holy Theotokos gathered herself and departed. And we remained enslaved for more than two hundred years—another 230 years. We were not enslaved simply because the Turks wanted it. We were enslaved because we were sinful; and today, if calamities befall us, they will befall us because we are sinful.
Officers would blaspheme her in the most vulgar manner, even on the front line. I remember that on a hillside near Tepeleni, a captain was blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos. A bombardment was underway—I did not witness this myself—and a Roumeliot evzone came climbing up. He turned to the captain and said, ‘Captain...’
‘What are you doing? Where do you think we are going?’ The captain was blaspheming Christ as well. The soldier turned on him and drew his knife to kill him. ‘I came here,’ he said. ‘I left my family behind. I left my wife and three children, and I came with the name of the Most Holy Theotokos on my lips to fight these dogs—and you blaspheme her in front of me?’ He even used the familiar blunt expression: ‘And you dare do this to me?’ He struck at him, but someone deflected his arm and the knife went aside. In any case, the man was restrained, and we advanced farther up. Then another bombardment began, with both sides shelling one another. A bomb fell. Just imagine—it all happened within three or four seconds.
An Italian squadron passed overhead, and we went down. All the captain’s entrails had been torn out. There was a trench there, so we placed him in it and covered him with earth. When we climbed back up, another aircraft came near and dropped another bomb, which threw him out of the trench. It was enough to make you tear your hair out when you saw it: the explosion hurled him back out. We were terrified. How could we remain there? After that squadron departed, we buried him again. Then a third bombardment came and reduced him to dust; nothing at all was found. Perhaps these things seem strange to you. Perhaps they seem exaggerated. But he had been blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos. If only we knew who this person truly is, gave her a place in our lives, and stopped listening to what the outside world says...
At least we Orthodox, who have endured so much, are always hearing something about the Most Holy Theotokos. And down there we have not merely one Acropolis, but many ‘Acropolises’ that bear witness to her; we shall discuss that as far as Diava as well. After this, I would like to spend the rest of our time on the earliest icons of the Most Holy Theotokos. I told you that there are two images not made by human hands in Lydda: one in the church built by the first Apostles and another in a church built by a group of other Christians. Now, you have certainly heard—and perhaps know from your own experience—that there are icons of the Most Holy Theotokos which are regarded as being of very great value.
You will hear people say that they are works of the Apostle and Evangelist Luke: ‘This one was painted by the Evangelist Luke’—on Tinos, for example, or on the Holy Mountain, or somewhere else, perhaps at Voulkan; I do not know where. Do you know the history behind this? Perhaps you do not. Then learn it tonight, so that you may know and may not listen when people claim that the holy icons are idols and must be removed from our homes. You know that the Apostle and Evangelist Luke was a physician, as Paul tells us, and evidently also a painter. While the Most Holy Theotokos was still alive, he timidly asked her whether it might be possible...
...for her to permit him to make her portrait, as we would say—to paint an icon of her. The Most Holy Theotokos agreed and did not rebuke him. She said, ‘Gladly. You have my blessing to do it. Wait.’ As soon as she said, ‘Wait,’ the Archangel Gabriel appeared, for you should know that he ministered to her even until her Dormition. That is another event, with other accounts; we would need to be shut away together for two years without interruption for me to tell you all of them. So the Archangel Gabriel appeared with three wooden panels, identical and symmetrical. He told Luke, ‘Take these, go, and make your attempt. You have my wholehearted support.’
His wholehearted support. Luke took the panels, but he wondered why. He had been told to paint one icon, so why had Gabriel given him three panels? He said nothing, for he was shy and reserved. He left with the panels under his arm and went away. In due course, he began his work. One day, drawing upon his personal knowledge of the Most Holy Theotokos, he completed her icon. He looked at her carefully and observed her as closely as he could. Then one day he took the icon, approached her very timidly, and knocked so that he might show it to her.
He said, ‘This is only an attempt. I do not know whether or to what extent it will please you. I did the best I could; I had neither greater ability nor greater knowledge.’ She said, ‘Let me see.’ He uncovered it, and she looked at the icon. ‘Well done,’ she said. ‘It is beautiful. Your effort is good and worthy of congratulations. But...’ His heart sank. Something was missing, and he was utterly dismayed. He had depicted the Most Holy Theotokos without Christ in her arms. She said, ‘I am alone.’ Then he understood his mistake. ‘I will make another attempt,’ he said. ‘Do so,’ she replied.
‘You have my blessing.’ He withdrew, asked forgiveness, and left. He went away and began again, making a second icon. It seems he was a true craftsman, because he used different materials, as I shall tell you later. When it was finished, he brought it to her. Once again he approached with the same timidity, hoping to hear her approval without hearing that word ‘but.’ The second time, too, his heart sank. In any case, he showed her the second icon. Again he heard the same words and the same congratulations, but when she came to the ‘but,’ he was crushed. He had painted Christ in her right arm.
She told him, ‘That is incorrect. Christ our Lord must be in my left arm.’ So he gathered up all three panels. The Most Holy Theotokos had known beforehand that he would need three of them, and that was why she had provided them in advance. He went away and properly painted the third icon, with Christ on her left. The Apostle and Evangelist Luke brought all three icons to the Most Holy Theotokos and showed them to her together. Then she said, ‘May the grace of Him who was born of me, my Lord and my God, be with them.’ She blessed all three icons, and they exist to this day.
They remain to rebuke all who reject the holy icons and to remind us who are so forgetful. The three icons still exist today. One is at Soumela on Mount Vermio, in the Holy Monastery of Soumela between Kozani and Veria. The second is the holy icon at the Great Cave Monastery in Kalavryta. The third is at Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus, and that one is veiled. Indeed, the mountain received its name because of the Most Holy Theotokos. When she instructed a monk to take this icon and conceal it there...
...as he passed among the trees in that dense forest, tradition says that a little bird flew before him—just as, on other occasions, the trees would bow wherever the Most Holy Theotokos passed. The bird flew ahead, crying out and singing: ‘Kykkos, Kykkos is the mountain; a monastery shall arise. A golden Lady shall enter there, and never shall she leave.’ The icon remains there to this day, still veiled. Once, a Turkish man tried to uncover it and was struck down as if by lightning. The other icons are made with wax mastic. The Dexiokratousa, in which Christ is held on the right, remains at the Great Cave Monastery in Kalavryta to this day. Although the monastery has burned four times and been reduced to lime and ashes, the icon did not burn, even though it is made of wax mastic, which...
...ought to have caught fire from fifty miles away. It still exists today. At Soumela there is also the first icon Luke painted, the one without Christ, which was brought from Pontus. They removed it from the Byzantine Museum, and now it is kept up there at Soumela. Indeed, I have images of all these icons among my slides, and in the coming days, if God permits and I am still alive, I shall show you the things I am telling you about.
You should know that all the other icons are based on these three. Some say there are seventy such icons, others 120, and others 150. Luke himself, however, painted only three of them. The rest are derived from these. People are quick to say, ‘This was painted by the Apostle Luke.’ It was not painted by the Apostle Luke. The Apostle Luke painted only these three. He painted no others.
In any case, what can anyone say when he sees the Most Holy Theotokos blessing these icons, preserving them, and commanding that they should exist and be preserved until today? Or do they not exist? Were we supposed to wait for Luther to come along after fifteen hundred years and tell us, ‘There are no icons’? That is absurd. We possess the icons. We have icons not made by human hands, and we have blessed icons. We possess them; they exist. There are icons from the fourth century and from the third century. What can they say? Did Protestantism suddenly appear and begin teaching the truth? Was there no reason to make icons? Was the Church deceived for fifteen hundred years? I think this is how we should consider the question of the holy icons of the Theotokos, and especially these three icons about which I have spoken.

Μονοπωλεί το πρόσωπο, όπως ο Χριστός μας λέγει: «Εγώ είμαι το φως», όχι φως, το φως, το μοναδικό φως. «Εγώ είμαι η ζωή», όχι απλώς ζωή, η ζωή. «Εγώ είμαι η οδός». Όλα αυτά μονοπωλούν το πρόσωπο. Έτσι και διά την Υπεραγίαν Θεοτόκον θα πρέπει να σκέφτεστε, όμως. Θα ήθελα λοιπόν να σας ρωτήσω: Ξέρετε από πότε η Παναγία υπεισέρχεται στα θρησκευτικά πράγματα; Πολλοί νομίζουν ότι η ιστορία της Θεοτόκου αρχίζει από τον Ιωακείμ και την Άννα. Όχι, είναι λάθος. Όταν υπάρχουν δύο άνθρωποι στη γη, Αδάμ και Εύα, τότε γίνεται συζήτηση για τη Θεοτόκον εκ μέρους του Θεού. Τη Θεοτόκο θα τη βρούμε όχι στην Καινή Διαθήκη, θα τη βρούμε στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη και θα τη βρούμε μέσα στο βιβλίο της Γενέσεως, συγκεκριμένως δε στο γάμμα 15 της Γενέσεως. Όταν ο Θεός έχει μπροστά του τον διάβολο, την Εύα και τον Αδάμ, κατά σειρά που εισήλθε η αμαρτία και η πτώση. Ξέρετε, ποιον τρόπο και τι είπε;
Δεν προσέχουμε τα κείμενα, είμαστε αδιάβαστοι. «Αβραάμ», λέει, «εγέννησε τον Ισαάκ», δεν λέγει η Σάρα. «Ισαάκ εγέννησε τον Ιακώβ», δεν λέει η Ρεβέκκα. «Ιακώβ δε εγέννησε τον Ιούδαν και τους αδελφούς αυτού», δεν λέει η Ραχήλ. Και εκεί ομιλεί ότι η γυναίκα έχει σπέρμα. «Το σπέρμα της γυναικός», σου λέει, «θα σου συντρίψει το κεφάλι». Ποια είναι η γυναίκα;
Θα γεννήσει πριν έρθουνε οι πόνοι. Ξέρετε ότι η Παναγία μας γέννησε άνευ ωδίνων. Γιατί; Διότι συνέλαβε άνευ ηδονής. Συνέλαβε άνευ ηδονής και γέννησε άνευ ωδίνων. Και γράφει ο Ησαΐας: «Πριν έρθει...» Πώς λέγονται οι πόνοι στην καθαρεύουσα;
