Summary
The lecture presents Christ’s empty tomb, the Theotokos’s empty tomb, and the Holy Fire as signs of the Resurrection and the truth of Orthodox Christianity. The incorrupt relics of Saint Spyridon, Saint Theodora the Empress, Saint Gerasimos, Saint Dionysios, and Saint Joseph are presented as enduring witnesses found in the Ionian Islands. The speaker concludes that abundant evidence calls people either to receive God’s word in faith and obedience or to reject it, echoing Isaiah’s teaching that God’s word never returns empty.

We began with Jerusalem, and more specifically with this all-holy Tomb of our Christ. As we said, it is compelling proof that He is the true God, for His Tomb is empty, unlike the tombs of all the other so-called founders of religions, who remain bound in their burial shrouds. So there is the matter of the Holy Sepulchre, and the matter of the Holy Fire, which for approximately two thousand years has been given only to the Orthodox;
and there is the matter of the empty tomb of our Most Holy Theotokos, the God-bearer. These are proofs that He is the true God. He is the One who will also empty our own graves. For man’s fear is death, but once the reality of the Resurrection enters his heart, that fear is transformed into joy. This was the theme on which we spoke last night. We then said that God has set boundaries around us—red lights, as we called them—so that we do not go astray: the Synods and their Canons. Through the Holy Spirit, He guided those Synods and performed a series of miracles that demonstrate the presence of the one God. We had reached the point of saying that, beyond all these things, we Orthodox also have other landmarks warning us not to stray outside the path, but to take heed of the holy relics of our Saints, which remain among us to this day,
and which are connected solely with Orthodoxy and Hellenism. That was more or less where we stopped, while speaking about the Ionian Islands and, specifically, the five relics found there: two on Corfu, one on Kefalonia, and two on Zakynthos. We spoke only about Saint Spyridon, who for sixteen hundred years has stood as a witness both for the prosecution and for the defense—for all who wish to believe and all who do not. For Christianity, as people sometimes say, is double-faced in the sense that it has two sides. Those who are willing to receive it are saved; those who choose to reject it are condemned. God says through Isaiah, “The word that goes forth from My mouth shall not return empty.”
It will bring salvation: I hear, I obey, and I am saved. Or I hear, I see, I reject, and I am condemned. Then it will bring condemnation. For the modern Christian who is willing to believe, there is abundant light—the true light. For the one who is unwilling, there is deep darkness, even though the light is present. Before speaking about the second holy relic, that of Saint Theodora the Empress, the Augusta, which is on Corfu—something many people do not know, because they think there is only one relic there—I should address a request and question put to me last night: how do the Orthodox receive the Holy Fire? This too can strengthen our faith and confirm the truth of our God.
So this is an opportunity both to answer our brother and to shed light on this matter, which may also be a question for some others. You know, we are in hostile territory there. Although Jerusalem is bound up with the Founder of our faith, Christ, its surrounding environment is nevertheless hostile.
Less than one percent. The latest census gave a population of 4,200,000, apart from those whom I believed the official figures did not include. Apart from those, then, the latest census gave 4,200,000—four million, two hundred thousand.
We so-called Christians, including the Arabic-speaking Christians and the rest, numbered 41,600 at that time. In other words, we were one person in a hundred. The much larger Jewish and Muslim populations there—the Arabs and all the others—could easily overwhelm us. The Protestants there are only a handful too, but they do not accept what we have. They have established their own place, claiming that Christ rose and was crucified there, and so forth. The Armenians, the Assyrians—all of them are opposed to us. We are one percent. The fact that we remain standing there is a miracle. When these Orthodox services take place, although the Orthodox are few, you would think you were in Greece. And those foreigners,
those who oppose us, shrink back during those days. In a certain way, the official representatives of the Jews and the Muslims also appear, along with all the other foreigners and every diplomatic mission present there. They all come to the place where this miracle will occur, where the God of the Orthodox will give the light. I say “the God of the Orthodox” because I once heard a tour guide who had brought a busload of people as far as the door of the holy Church of the Resurrection. He did not take them inside. He merely told them that inside was what was said to be the Tomb of God—the God of the Orthodox.
“The God of the Orthodox”—as though they themselves belonged to another god. Yet that is how the man put it; that was how he understood it and expressed it. So I say that we could never have carried on such a deception for so many years and fooled so many people, especially the Roman Catholics, who are influential in every direction and possess so much money and such determination. We could never have deceived them by claiming that we receive the light, that Christ gives the light to us but not to the others, and that He makes an exception for us. Christ makes no exception. He shows us the way in which He wishes to be worshipped. If we think we can invent a religion of our own and worship God in our own way, then, as we said last night, we are doing nothing but creating yet another religion alongside the others—one that will lead only to Hell and not to Paradise. Now listen to how this takes place. At midday on Holy Saturday,
the light of the Resurrection does not appear at midnight, as it does when we take the flame from the lamp at the Beautiful Gate and chant, “Come, receive the light.” A special service takes place on Saturday, between eleven and one. Our Patriarch descends in procession with all due ceremony, accompanied by his entire retinue and all his people. All the others come as well—the Armenians and the Abyssinians, though not the Roman Catholics. Even when their Pascha happens to coincide with ours, as it does every four years, the Roman Catholics do not receive the light from us. They kindle their own flame and conduct a separate ceremony of their own. But all the other branches receive the light from us. Our own people, the Orthodox, give them the light of the Resurrection. The Armenian makes a prostration
before our Patriarch; the Abyssinian, the Syrian, and all the others likewise make a prostration before our Patriarch and attend the service. The Tomb has been sealed since Great Friday. Everything is extinguished—there is no burning lamp or anything else. All of this is supervised by the civil authorities and the police there. They are not our police; we have no police there. We are like Crusaders in that place. All administrative control, including the keys to every door, is in foreign hands, not ours. They inspect everything. So, as I was saying, at eleven our Patriarch descends and a service is held. The Patriarch himself does not always enter the Tomb. The ribbon is cut and the Tomb is opened in the presence of all the officials, particularly the civil authorities and the police.
In recent years the Patriarch himself was very ill and unable to enter, so he appointed a representative—either the bishop of Petra, the bishop of Lydda, or another of his own bishops. The one who enters is stripped down completely, wearing only an inner cassock and carrying nothing on his person. He is searched and all the customary checks are made. The Armenian Patriarch accompanies him but remains in the outer chamber. There are two chambers. At the rear is the Tomb itself. In front is a small antechamber containing the stone that the angel rolled away so that the Myrrh-bearing Women might see that our Christ had risen. In this small entrance hall, from which a doorway leads into the inner chamber, there are two large openings in the wall. These connect the chamber with the common area, one on either side.
Through these openings our Patriarch, or his representative, gives the light to the other Christian confessions. The openings themselves and their very presence are sufficient witnesses against every denial, because they show that everyone receives the light of the Resurrection from our people. There is a prayer that the Patriarch, or his representative, recites on his knees at the Tomb. Everything is utterly still, with the silence of death. People hang everywhere like swarms of bees, if possible even from the lamp stands. The church is packed with people on every side. Some even pay to secure a small corner from which they can witness the event. You know that the light comes in various ways. Sometimes the lamps above ignite by themselves, as many of the faithful see.
At times it is like a lightning bolt, a zigzag flashing across the horizon. At other times the bundles of candles held by the Patriarch ignite. He carries two bundles, each containing thirty-three candles, corresponding to the years of Christ’s earthly life. Or an extinguished lamp above the Holy Sepulchre is suddenly kindled. At other times small blue globes appear over the Holy Sepulchre, and he gathers them with a piece of cotton. They become light; they burst into flame. For a while, this fire does not burn. You can place it against your face, your hands, and so on. This, then, becomes the flame with which the bundles of candles are lit. Through the openings he gives it to the various Christian confessions, and afterward he emerges through the main entrance holding the candles and gives the flame to the rest of the people. Then a tremendous cry rises up. Some Arabic-speaking Christians wait outside; others set off at a gallop with their animals,
carrying the light to their villages; others take it by car or by various other means. A mighty shout to the Lord goes up. At that moment everything seems to be turned upside down; the whole place is beside itself. And this has not happened for only one year, or two, or five, or ten. Four times in history, various powerful groups have attempted to prevent our Patriarch from receiving the light, imagining that they could command God—that is, command Christ. One notable instance occurred in 1574, when they shut our Patriarch out. The Armenians bribed the authorities there so that they themselves might receive the light. As I said last night, our Patriarch came and stood
before the locked door, weeping, lamenting, and praying. The Armenian remained inside for two hours but did not receive the light; it was not given to him. Beside the entrance, on the left as we go in—as those who have visited can confirm, and those who visit in the future will also see—there are three columns. The middle one split open with a tremendous crack, and light came forth from it. The column remains there to this day, split and blackened, as a memorial of the event. From it the Patriarch received the light of the Resurrection. The Armenian inside was utterly defeated, and the Patriarch gave the light to our people. There was also a Turkish guard above. When this Turk saw what had happened, he cried out in his own language that this was the true Allah, the God of the Resurrection.
On the right-hand side there is another doorway, now closed up, because only one door of the holy Church of the Resurrection remains open for people to enter and leave. The other doorway is sealed with masonry. Blood can still be seen on the ground there to this day. The relics of that Emir, that Turk, are pure white. Our Church preserves them and honors him as a martyr. They are kept in the Holy Monastery of the Great Panagia. Scattered around the Holy Sepulchre within the Old City of Jerusalem are twenty monasteries, one of which is the Holy Monastery of the Great Panagia. His relics are kept there. So the light received at midday on Saturday is taken that night to celebrate the service of the Resurrection. There is, then, a special service for its reception. It is observed by all those hostile to the faith and, as you understand,
we could not deceive anyone. We are so few, especially in that place, that in terms of numbers we are barely visible. Nevertheless, because we possess the truth, Christ reveals these signs to the whole world and calls everyone to reconsider—to ask whether he has been deceived, gone astray, or failed to pay attention. I should, of course, have said this last night, but in any case I add it here. Now, moving on to the other ways in which a person can, as it were, put his finger upon the evidence and see that our faith is unique and true, I said that there is also the testimony of the Saints. I mentioned that in the Ionian Islands alone we have five Saints whose relics remain.
On Corfu there are Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora the Augusta. On Kefalonia there is Saint Gerasimos, around whose relics a great scandal has recently arisen—a blasphemous and malicious uproar. And on Zakynthos there are two more: Saint Dionysios, whose entire body remains there to this day, and Saint Joseph at Gaitani on Zakynthos. These five Saints enable a person to see that something exists here beyond what is outwardly visible, and that it is found, I say, only within Orthodoxy. I do not know whether you are aware that Saint Theodora the Augusta and Saint Spyridon were brought from Constantinople by the priest known as Kalochairetis when the imperial city fell. He carried these two sets of relics on a mule,
and, moving little by little as the Turkish advance drove them southward, they reached Arta, then Igoumenitsa, and from there finally crossed to the Ionian Islands, specifically Corfu. Her relic is preserved in the Metropolitan cathedral. Saint Spyridon is the patron Saint of the city. The cathedral is the church known as the Most Holy Theotokos Spilaiotissa. The entire relic of Saint Theodora is preserved there. It too is one of the Lord’s signs upon which anyone can place his finger. She is the Empress associated with the end of Iconoclasm. Her relic is not something from yesterday; it dates from approximately the early ninth century.
There are three royal women named Theodora: the one in Alexandria, the one in Arta, and the one we are discussing now, whose relic is in Corfu. There was once a kingdom in Arta, and there is still a monastery of Saint Theodora there, together with her tomb. If we travel farther south and come to Kefalonia, we encounter the relic of Saint Gerasimos. It has been preserved to this day, although it is three or four hundred years old. The most serious opinion of this relic is held, above all, by the evil spirits. You know that Saint Gerasimos has received special grace from the Lord over unclean spirits. In other words, the devil knows better than anyone what Saint Gerasimos means, and who stands behind Saint Gerasimos and has preserved him there for four hundred years. Recently, the demons have been saying:
“We already had the Monk, and now the Bishop has been added as well.” By “the Bishop” they mean Saint Nektarios, because he too has authority over unclean spirits. And if you are ever counted worthy to go there, if you have not already been, and you see the votive offerings, you will find many chains that once bound people possessed by demons. They have been hung there with notes of thanksgiving describing how the Saint delivered them from bondage. As I told you yesterday, a great commotion has arisen in our homeland over the matter of Saint Gerasimos. Perhaps you too have been influenced here by the various newspapers. They portray the bishop, Prokopios,
and, I declare before the Saint, accuse him of cutting up the Saint’s relic, dividing it into pieces, selling it, and so on. Many things happened there that should never have happened. Yet all these accusations are lies. The Saint is there in his entirety. The public does not know this. People read enormous headlines against the bishop and against everyone else, but they did not read that the Saint is still there and that nothing is missing from his relic. I will not merely state this as a theory; I will prove it with concrete evidence, so that you may learn not to believe everything you hear. Especially today, when every institution and every noble and beautiful ideal is passing through a crisis, you must always be cautious. I will read to you what is happening in our Greece...
There is a theatrical production today that insults the Bishop of Preveza. It mocks everything sacred and holy, and it includes a particular scene about cutting up and auctioning the relic of Saint Gerasimos. Listen to what is said in one scene, according to the court records published in the Athenian newspapers. This play is being performed in Athens. I do not know why God does not strike down this filthy production, or how He tolerates such vile slander and public display. Listen. Prokopios appears onstage with someone named Felet, holding an axe.
Here are two more scenes from the play. Metropolitan Prokopios of Kefalonia appears with the nuns of the Holy Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, and they begin announcing prices for the Saint’s sacred relic: “The five toes of the left foot, four hundred thousand drachmas. Twelve ribs from the left side at fifty thousand drachmas each—that makes six hundred thousand. Twelve ribs from the right side at sixty thousand drachmas each—that makes seven hundred and twenty thousand,” and so forth. Then, as the stage lights go out—and this is being performed in Athens—the Metropolitan of Kefalonia takes an axe in his hands and brandishes it. In the darkness, the thud of the axe is heard as it supposedly strikes and dismembers the sacred relic of Saint Gerasimos.
Someone will see these things performed and will conclude that they must be true. I tell you on my own responsibility: nothing of the kind happened. Listen to the facts. While this play is being performed, does the man who wrote it know the findings of the experts? A committee of three physicians went to examine the relic. I quote the report word for word: “The newspaper Akropolis has obtained the expert report of the physicians Georgios Avlamis, Panagiotis Michas, and Ioannis Antonatos, who examined the sacred relic of Saint Gerasimos last Sunday.” Let me take this opportunity to tell you that the chairman, Georgios Avlamis—as I also said yesterday evening—
felt the pulse of Saint Gerasimos and found it beating, and for twenty days afterward he could not recover from the experience. The scandal sheets did not publish that. They did not write a word about it. Now listen to the findings of the three physicians, which you disregard while continuing the slander and performing a play in which, as you have heard, prices are placed on hands and ribs. “First, in the left submandibular area there is a loss of soft tissue, allowing the bone of the lower jaw to be seen.” Here beneath the jaw, the soft tissue is missing and the bone is visible. This is due to deterioration caused by time. So far, there is nothing suspicious.
“There is an absence of the little finger of the right hand from its base.” That little finger of the Saint has been kept for a hundred years in the Metropolis of Kefalonia as a blessing. So far, again, there is nothing suspicious. “Third, the great toe of the left foot is completely absent.” The great toe of the left foot is entirely missing. I will tell you later about something I experienced while uncovering another relic, which remains whole to this day. As we were digging it up and the hoe was being used, the hoe struck here, threw part of it aside, and caught the toe as well. No one deliberately cut it off.
Can we know, after four hundred years, how this relic was brought to the surface? If a hoe caught the toe while it was still attached, why should the bishop and the Church now be slandered over it? The report continues: “On the dorsal surface of the right foot, near its outer edge, there is an area of missing skin ten centimetres long and two centimetres wide.” In other words, a small strip, ten by two centimetres, has been peeled from the outer surface. It shows microscopic signs of a relatively recent detachment. That area is not the same colour as the rest of the four-hundred-year-old relic. Of course, someone may ask: if it had been removed two hundred years ago, would it not still show some difference? Naturally it would. The report calls it relatively recent only by comparison with something else: “The impression of relatively recent detachment arises from comparison with a similar adjacent lesion that is clearly older.” The newspaper then continues with Prokopios’s written defence. The accusations are printed in enormous letters, while this explanation is perhaps printed in tiny type somewhere in a corner. In his written defence, Prokopios states,
concerning the supposedly recent removal of the piece ten centimetres long and two centimetres wide, that it was compared with another piece detached four hundred years ago. Therefore, the removal of the newer piece would appear recent even if it had taken place a hundred years ago. “But I,” the Metropolitan maintains, “have served as bishop in Kefalonia for only fourteen years.” That is the truth of the matter concerning Saint Gerasimos. I do not know what reports have reached you here through the newspapers or what opinion you have formed. Yet this shows how guarded we must be, if you will permit the expression, when faced with accusations against the Orthodox Church and the Orthodox clergy. I repeat: accusations against the Orthodox Church and the Orthodox clergy.
This is the only Church in the world that is constantly accused. No other church is attacked in this way. Does that not strike you as strange? Have you ever heard such campaigns against the Protestants, the Latins, other religions, and so forth? No one attacks them—not even their own people. Only the Orthodox Church stands in the line of fire. Why? Because it alone crushes the devil to dust. It alone has an enemy, because it alone has power. All the others are the works of others, and not of Jesus the Nazarene, the Crucified One. Let us consider this rationally, calmly, quietly, and without outside influence, and we too will reach some simple conclusions.
In the future, let us take care not to rush to judgment, not to pass on irresponsible claims, and not to imagine that the faults of certain individuals excuse our own faults or justify our remaining far from the Church. Moving on, there is Saint Dionysios, whose entire relic, as you know, remains whole. I remember an incident involving an Athenian couple who travelled by taxi to Zakynthos. They were rather difficult people. Their driver had no idea why they were going, since no one had explained anything to him. He thought they were going to venerate a corpse, as he put it. But this is not a corpse; it is a relic, something that remains. That is what the word “relic” means: a remainder. When they arrived, he went with them out of curiosity, to see
what kind of people would go and venerate a corpse and light candles before it, as he said. So he went with them, and the poor man saw something he had not expected. After a few moments, he began to tremble. When they had moved on, they asked him, “What is it, Mr Nikos?” He replied, “That is not a corpse.” “Then what is it?” “That man is not dead.” What could they understand at that moment? They realized that something had happened. The Saint had appeared to him alive, lying there and looking at him, with a radiant red complexion, a beautiful face, and a fresh beard. That was how the Saint appeared to him. The others stood there without answering him immediately, until
he had calmed down a little. Then he told them what he had experienced—what he had expected to find and what he had actually encountered there. If I had brought with me the miracles of Saint Dionysios, Saint Gerasimos, and Saint Spyridon, we would find many cases in which people received what we might call a good blow of awakening when they discovered that the reality behind these relics is not at all what we imagine, but something very different. In any case, apart from the Saint’s holy relic, and apart from his life, there is an inscription upon his shrine. If you ever go there, pay attention to it. It concerns falsehood, because Saint Dionysios was the man who protected his own brother’s murderer. They placed this saying there: “The first time you lied, you lost the virginity of
truth.” “The sinless man becomes defiled at the very moment he sins.” Of course, we speak about this matter morning and evening, but this man lied for the first time and lost the virginity of truth. A person loses that virginity and ceases to be undefiled at the very moment he sins. This is a subject we may discuss when we are able to speak about falsehood. In any case, the saying rests like a medal upon the Saint’s holy reliquary. Now, in our homeland, we Orthodox Christians unfortunately fail to pay attention. Sometimes we are easily led astray, or we sell our faith for a bowl of lentils. Yet there are other beacons of Orthodoxy, other lights that tell us, “Stop! Take care!” There are other pillars established by Christ to keep us from going off the rails. You will know Loutraki. Above Loutraki stands
the Holy Monastery dedicated to Saint Patapios, where the Saint’s entire relic is preserved. Of all those who reach Loutraki, whether as tourists or to bathe their arthritic limbs—because it is a spa town—about ninety-five percent go up there and stand open-mouthed in amazement. I once went there, not now when a car can drive close to the monastery, but years ago when we had to stop far away. It was in the evening, and there were eight buses with us, including my own. Among us was an intellectual from Cyprus. When we arrived, he asked for a room so that he could sleep. He did not even go to light a candle before the Saint. He did not visit the Saint’s hermitage or his reliquary.
Someone said, “Let him visit first and eat afterward, even if he is tired.” But from what I had said on the bus, he too had concluded that we were going to see a corpse. “I cannot understand,” he said, “how educated people can involve themselves in such macabre things.” They gave him a cell, and he withdrew there with his wife. Outside, on a broad landing, the others set up a temporary Holy Table, and Vespers began, while he went to sleep. Eventually everyone went to bed. Then the Saint came to him, seized him, and said, “You there—what are you doing here?” A conversation began in his sleep. The man himself tells the story; he is still alive and works in the judiciary. He asked, “Who are you?” The Saint replied, “I am the master of this house.”
“Who is the master here? They say there is only a corpse in this place.” The Saint replied, “I am the corpse.” “But you are a human being, just as we are.” “And what did you imagine the saints of God were? What did you think they would be? Now get up,” the Saint told him. “If it is truly you, then I will come,” the man said. “Yes, you must come.” He awoke with a start. The experience had been so vivid, and the Saint had gripped his ears so firmly, that he awoke even though he had only just fallen asleep.
He woke his wife. “Get up,” he told her. She said, “I have only just dropped from exhaustion.” “Get up.” “But I have only just fallen asleep.” “Come on, get up! We are going downstairs.” So she rose, and they went down. The cave dates from the fourteenth century. In front of it is a broad landing where the fathers had set up a temporary Holy Table for the service. Many people were gathered there, and
he had to pass beside them to reach the little doorway. Inside the cave stood the reliquary containing the Saint’s relic. He saw the abbot sitting on a stone. The abbot beckoned and said, “Come, pass through,” giving him permission. So the man slipped quietly past, with his wife beside him, entered the cave, and venerated the Saint. He remained there as meek as a little dog until six the next morning, when we departed. Yes, these are our saints; they are not corpses. They are the saints of Christ, and they minister on behalf of Christ. If you go there, listen to and read about the contemporary miracles—not miracles from some distant age, but miracles in this very twentieth century, an atheistic, materialistic, and corrupt age. You will raise your hands in amazement.
A great beacon stands at Prokopi in Euboea. Our Christ has scattered such beacons throughout Greece, so that wherever you go, you see before you a sign saying, “Stop here, and let us talk.” Saint John, known as the Russian, is preserved there with his whole body. He was brought to Prokopi in Euboea from Prokopi in Asia Minor. When the refugees came, they brought their treasure with them. And, lest I forget, I would like to tell you that another saint also came from there: Saint Gregory the Nazianzen. His whole body is preserved, yet people do not know it. He is at Nea Karvali, fourteen kilometres beyond Kavala.
He bears the head of his father, Gregory. His left leg, preserved whole with its slipper and trouser leg, is at the Holy Monastery of Saint Paul on the Holy Mountain. I have been counted worthy to venerate it, and I may even have it on one of the slides I show about the Holy Mountain, so that I can show it to you. These are living realities. When those people left Karvali in Asia Minor and came here, they too brought this treasure with them. Saint John the Russian was first brought to Aidipsos, and the people of Euboea, the people of Chalkida, kept him there in the cemetery church of Saint John the Forerunner.
The people of Prokopi who had come settled in the Mesogeia...
“We brought our treasure with us. How can you take him from us?” So they mounted an operation—what we would call a commando raid—to steal the saint. And the saint helped them steal him. He truly helped them. When word spread that they were taking the saint, people heard that they were carrying him down toward the sea, where a ship was waiting to take him away. Then the ship’s horn sounded—“toot!”—and the police rushed in that direction. This gave them the opportunity to carry him the other way. They took him away and then stood there with rifles in their hands. “You are not taking him from us.” And that is how he has remained there to this day. In other words, the saint himself helped his own people. I have many stories about this saint. One evening, fourteen coaches went there, carrying about 520 people. Among them all...
was a young woman in her fourth year of medical school. If she could have done so, she would have torn out her own mother’s eyes, because her mother believed in the Holy Relics, while she was being taught very different things at the university. When they arrived, she too went off to the guesthouse to sleep. The saint came and took her by the ears as well. He said, “Young lady, what are you doing here?” And once again they began a conversation. “Who are you?” “Who am I? You know the one who is here—the one they call a relic?” “But I know that there is a corpse there. I know it; science says so.” “That is not so. You do not know what you are talking about. I am he.” “But you are young.” “I am he.” In any case, the saints appear just as they are shown in their icons. She woke her mother so that they could go to the Church, but wherever relics are kept, the Church is locked at night to protect against theft and other damage.
She sat outside the Church all night and did not return to bed. The cold tormented her there all night—it gets cold there, just as it does here—until morning, when she went in, venerated the saint, and kissed his relics. I cannot begin to tell you of the miracles that happen there. I want to tell you only one thing: every saint has a particular gift. Saint Nektarios alone is like an entire clinic; he can deal with every illness. The others have their specialties: Saint Paraskevi for the eyes, Saint Barbara for smallpox, Saint Artemios for the reproductive organs and the abdomen, Saint Xenia for hair loss, and so on. Saint John the Russian has a special gift for bringing people back home.
What does that mean—having some employee transferred? No. Do you want the child you have lost to return home? Pray to the saint. Do you want your daughter, who has gone astray, to return home? Pray to the saint. Do you want your husband or wife to return? Pray to the saint, and a miracle will happen. A miracle will happen. I knew of one very difficult case involving a married couple. They had gone abroad and lost their way there. The mother prayed that they would return to Greece humbled, with their shoes in their hands. And it happened: they came back with their shoes in their hands. They were shipowners, yet they came back utterly humbled. Strange things indeed. Our saints have not simply been placed there to guard our land and our Orthodoxy. They are there to help us in all our needs,
both spiritual and even bodily. If I were to go over to Mytilene, I would find there, at the Metropolis, Saint Theodore the New Martyr. I do not know whether anyone here is from that region. Saint Theodore the New Martyr is there, preserved with his whole body. If I went to Kalymnos, I would find Saint Savvas. He was a priest, a saint whose whole body is preserved, and many different miracles occur through him even today. A book about him is in circulation. If you wish, write to Kalymnos and ask them to send it to you, so that you may see what Christ is doing here in the full light of the twentieth century. And how many other relics are there abroad—in Constantinople, for example? I do not know how many. How many are there in Russia? In one place alone there are eighty-three relics, regardless of how the authorities interpret, exploit, or present them.
Metropolitan Kallinikos of Piraeus gave a lecture about this. He had travelled to Russia with the Archbishop and others, and they were taken to that place. At this moment I cannot recall its name. If anyone needs it, I can find it for him. I have the lecture on tape and can send it to him, so that he may learn precisely which place contains the eighty-three relics. And in Kardamyla on Chios, the island of shipowners, I tell you that even today the whole body of the daughter of the shipowner Pateras—Panagos and Katinko Pateras’s daughter—is preserved.
There are also other Holy Relics that could be mentioned in connection with these reflections—relics that the Catholics took from us. In recent times they have begun, in a certain way, to return some of them to us: the Holy Skull of Saint Andrew the Apostle at Patras; then the relics of Titus; those of Ignatius at Mytilene; and, most recently, the relics of Saint Demetrios. I happened to be in Thessaloniki on the eve of their arrival. The whole city, beginning at the waterfront, was filled with fragrance because his Holy Relics were coming. If you go to Thessaloniki, the moment you enter his church you will tangibly sense his presence. It is impossible not to. However congested you may be, spiritually or physically, he will make his presence known. Another saint whose relics the Catholics kept from us—and I want you to know this—was Saint Savvas the Sanctified.
For hundreds of years they had kept him there, though they could not admit they had stolen him without being accused. Then he appeared in a dream to the previous Pope and said, “Send me home, or I will bring great harm upon you.” The Pope notified Patriarch Benedict, who sent a delegation to receive the saint. Our people had brought clean vestments so that they could change him, rather than bring him back in the Catholic vestments and other things they had dressed him in. And, my dear friends, he raised his arms by himself, and they clothed him in the vestments they had brought. He is now at the Holy Lavra of Saint Savvas the Sanctified, in the desert of the Jordan. What, then, are we Orthodox Christians to say?
Have I really told you anything? Only the smallest part of what exists. What, then, are we Orthodox Christians to say? We do not know where we are going. We do not hold firmly to the true faith, and we wait for others to tell us whether we should abolish our Mysteries, reject our saints, and cast aside the Most Holy Theotokos. Are others going to tell us what to do? Are they going to instruct us? This is very absurd, I think, and completely inconsistent. It overturns the proper order of things. I should not have spoken first about the saints and the Holy Relics. I should have spoken about the Theotokos, because she comes first. After the sun comes the moon, and then the stars, which are the saints. An Orthodox Christian knows nothing about the Theotokos, yet waits for Protestants to tell him that the Most Holy Theotokos does not intercede, that she is not Ever-Virgin, and that she is not the Theotokos. Is this what Orthodox Christians are waiting for—this Greek nation in which...
there is not merely no household, but not even a single person, who has not received mercy through the Most Holy Theotokos? If you ask no one else, ask the people who fought in Albania, and they will tell you. We no longer have among us those who lived through the four hundred years of bondage, but they too could have told you what the Most Holy Theotokos was to the Greek nation and to Greek Orthodoxy. Yet today there are people who remain guarded and hesitant when the subject of the Most Holy Theotokos arises. My dear friends, the Most Holy Theotokos has made her presence known decisively in the Orthodox Church.
The first thing our various opponents will tell us is to take down our holy icons—to remove the Most Holy Theotokos, our saints, and our Christ from our homes and burn their icons, if not trample them underfoot. Should a Greek do such a thing? Is it idolatry for me to have an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and venerate it? Is it worship if I keep an image of my father, my mother, my brother, or someone who once saved my life, show it to others, and say, “This is the friend who saved my life”? I met many men who had fought in Albania and would say, “This man is my saviour, and I keep his photograph among my icons, because I lay wounded in a ravine.
When I had lost nearly all my blood and could no longer breathe, he lifted me onto his shoulder in the snow, took out his canteen and gave me whatever he had, and carried me down to the first-aid station. If I am alive today, it is because of him.” And rightly so: if a person has any sense of honour, he will never remove that picture—not only from his home, but not even from his icon corner. That man was, of course, the bodily saviour of this brief earthly life. But what of the One who is my spiritual Saviour, the One whom my sin and His love brought down from Heaven, who ascended again and waits for me there as my Forerunner? Shall I cast Him aside and have no icon of Him? And what of Christ, who, according to tradition, gave Veronica His image upon the cloth as He ascended Golgotha, when a young woman came forward to wipe away His sweat and His image remained upon it? To this day the Catholics mark that place along the Way of Suffering in Jerusalem.
Is that all false? What of the Holy Mandylion, which the Church commemorates on August 16, and its connection with King Abgar? Abgar was a leper. Since he was unable to go to Christ himself, he sent one of his servants to ask Christ to come to him. But if Christ would not come, the servant was to paint His image on a tile and bring it back. Do you know what happened? The servant went and found our Christ teaching. He climbed onto a rock and began to paint Him. But after a little while Christ’s appearance changed. “Is this really the same man?” he thought. So he began again from the beginning. Soon Christ’s appearance changed once more, and the man painted and erased, painted and erased, and began again. By the time the teaching ended, he had accomplished nothing.
But Christ knew what was happening and said, “Come here.” He took a cloth, pressed it to His face, and gave the man His image upon it. Then He said, “Take this to your master and tell him: for now he will be partially healed, and later I will send someone to heal him completely.” And indeed, the servant took it to Abgar. When Abgar saw it, he venerated it. He saw the face of Christ upon what came to be called the Holy Mandylion, and all the leprosy vanished from his body, with only a small part remaining upon his head. Later, when the Apostles went forth, the Apostle Thaddeus travelled through that region, baptised Abgar, and cleansed him completely. Abgar then had the Holy Mandylion made into a large icon.
He placed it at the entrance to the city and required the people to venerate that face as they entered and left. It remained there until Julian the Apostate passed through. Then they removed it, hid it, and it remained sealed inside a wall for more than six hundred years, with the lamp before it still burning. Later, when the city of Edessa was in danger—the Edessa of that region, not our own—our Christ said once again, “Go and take My image from the place where it is hidden, and they will not defeat you.” They went and recovered it, and they found the lamp still burning. What will the Protestants tell us? What will the Jehovah’s Witnesses tell us? What will the various heretics who want us to remove the icons from our homes tell us? Does this mean that Christ is an idolater? Did Christ not understand the matter when He gave us His own image? Of course not. In the earliest days, my dear friends...
the Church had not yet taken on her full outward form. The Apostles John, Peter, and James built a church in Lydda—Lydda lies between Lod, where Tel Aviv’s airport is, and Jerusalem. It is the village and homeland of Saint George the Trophy-Bearer, whom the Catholics removed from their list of saints. His tomb is there, and they say the whole place is filled with fragrance when people go there to venerate him. The Apostles built a church in honour of the Most Holy Theotokos. She was still alive at the time, and they said to her, “Lady, come and bless something we have built in your honour.”
She replied, “Go, and you will find me there.” They went, thinking that she would travel there by some other means. But when they arrived, they found her image portrayed in relief upon a pillar of the church they had built—an icon made without hands. The first Christians also prepared a building to serve as a Church. The Jews sought to take it from them, and the matter was brought before a court. Although the presiding judge saw that justice was on the Christians’ side, he was afraid to issue a ruling. “Leave it,” he said. “Lock this building, and let us see whether some miracle occurs; then we shall decide.” And a miracle did occur. When, after some time, they opened the building, they found there a most beautiful image in relief of the Most Holy Theotokos, clothed in red and blue—an icon made without hands. They asked, “Who is she?” She is the Most Holy Theotokos of our God. And everything the Church possesses here bears witness to this.
In any case, I had not intended—and I do not have with me—the multitude of events I could present to you, events that would leave you speechless and that no one can erase simply because he feels like it or wants to. These are living realities surrounding our faith. I do not wish to change anyone’s faith. I simply want to remind each person to take heed: if his faith is being attacked from any quarter, or if he has doubts about anything, let him pay attention to these beacons that Christ has given us, and to these wounds that Christ has left for us, so that we may put our finger into them and become not faithless, but believing. That is all for this evening.

Εκατοντάδες χρόνια μας τον είχαν κρατήσει εκεί, να μην μπορούσαν να πουν ότι τον είχαν κλέψει και τους κατηγορήσει. Και παρουσιάστηκε στον ύπνο του προηγουμένου Πατριάρχου και του είπε: «Να με στείλεις στο σπίτι μου, γιατί θα σου κάνω μεγάλο κακό». Και ειδοποιεί τον Βενέδικτο, τον Πατριάρχη, και φέρνει αντιπροσωπία και τον παίρνει τον Άγιο. Και οι δικοί μας, για να μην τον φέρουν με τα καθολικά εκείνα και λοιπά άμφια, δεν ξέρω τι του είχαν φορέσει, είχαν πάρει στολήν καθαρήν για να τον αλλάξουνε, και σήκωσε τα χέρια μοναχός του, αγαπητοί μου, και του φόρεσαν αυτά που του φόρεσαν. Και τώρα είναι στην Ιερά Μονή, Αγία του Λαύρα του Σάββα του Ηγιασμένου, στην έρημο του Ιορδάνου. Τι θα πούμε εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι;
