Summary
Orthodox Christians navigate by both Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, which is not a collection of human commandments but a work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Sepulchre, the empty tombs of Christ and the Theotokos, and the annual Holy Fire are presented as tangible witnesses confirming the Orthodox faith. The lecture warns that pride can make heresy resistant even to clear evidence and urges believers to remain firmly within the Orthodox Church.

Those of you who were with us last night will remember some of the things God granted us the grace to say. We said that we Orthodox travel with two guides: Scripture and Tradition. It is chiefly this second part that distinguishes us from all the others who claim to be Christians. If some of us are led astray, or if others who are not Orthodox remain on some other shore, it is because they do not know this dimension of the Church called Tradition. And when we say Tradition, we do not mean human commandments, as they accuse us of following. We mean something that is also the work of the Holy Spirit and that satisfies the whole human person. For as you know, most people rely on their senses. That is why they so often say, “Unless I see, I will not believe.” In other words, they want their senses to be satisfied as well. If possible, they want to see, to hear, to taste, to smell, and to touch.
In general, they want satisfaction through all their senses. Thomas was the first such person, and his example serves as evidence both for the accusation and for the defense. He wanted to verify what he had heard; he wanted to see it as well. I do not think he doubted the truthfulness of his fellow Apostles. So many of them had told him, “We have seen Him.” But as you know, Thomas had been absent that evening of the Resurrection when Christ came and stood among them. Yet what Christ did afterward proves that the human senses were not given to us merely to remain unsatisfied.
Nor were they given as though they could contribute nothing, even in the matter of our salvation and our faith. So if we Orthodox are distinguished from others, and if we can demonstrate this matter to you, it is because we also have Tradition. Tradition speaks to us about many things and helps us to believe—to become not unbelieving, but believing. It is true that we are not unbelievers, but we are vulnerable in many areas. Some people often exploit this and shake our faith. You especially, living here amid this swarm of heresies and so many conflicting claims, must be thoroughly instructed.
You must be well instructed in these matters so that you yourselves will not be shaken and, if you can, may guide others as well. Yet it often does not occur to us where we should turn to verify the exactness and authenticity of our faith, so that we may remain faithful even unto death. Allow me to present a series of thoughts showing that we truly possess something the others do not possess at all. As I said last night, it is not enough for someone simply to believe in Christ, just as it is not enough to believe in some higher being, some higher power, or even in God
and in Christ. The Protestants say that they believe in Christ. The Catholics believe in Christ, and everyone claims to believe—but in which Christ do they believe? Do they believe in Christ the Crucified, Jesus of Nazareth? In whom do they believe? That is the question. Nothing is gained by inventing a Jesus of one’s own. There were many men named Jesus in the days of the Lord, but this is what the angel at the tomb said to the myrrh-bearing women: “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here.” And when Christ asked the question that we read—you may have found it yourselves—in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, He said: “Who do men say that I am? Who do people take Me to be?” One said that they took Him for Elijah; others, for Jeremiah; others, for John the Forerunner or one of the prophets.
That is what people in the marketplace say, people who do not know. “But you who are closer to Me—who do you say that I am?” And as you know, Peter spoke and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Not of some god, but of the living God. You are the Christ, the Son of God. Then Christ called Simon blessed, saying to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah”—blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah. “Why, Lord, am I blessed?” Because “flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” What you said did not come from you; My Father used you to give this true confession. From this it follows that we are called to know, if we so desire, this true
Son of God, Jesus of Nazareth, together with His will and His holy teaching. It is not enough merely to believe in something. However sincere our faith may be, if what we believe is false, we shall suffer shipwreck. How many ship captains have driven their vessels onto reefs despite sincerely believing that they were following the right course? They had made an error. Their sincerity did not save them; they were shipwrecked. That is why we must sometimes check ourselves, just as we check our watches when we hear the observatory’s signal: “Beep, beep, beep—the hour is such-and-such.”
If the watch is fast, we correct it; if it is slow, we set it right. In the same way, we must examine our faith and find out whether we truly stand aright, believe aright, and act aright. For as we said yesterday, we need both orthodoxy—right belief—and orthopraxy—right conduct. Thomas is blessed because he was charged with touching the Lord’s side. Someone today might say, “If only we too had the Lord’s side before us, so that we might become not unbelieving but believing, and not be tossed about amid so many theories, dangers, and delusions.” In His love, Christ has left many such sides—many tangible witnesses—in His Church. If only people were willing to examine them, for they satisfy the senses. This is not merely a question of theology.
It is a matter for investigation; it is something practical. We use this kind of evidence in so many other fields and benefit from it. If we were willing to do so here, we would be greatly benefited. Allow me, then, to present a series of these “sides of the Lord,” these tangible witnesses by which we can verify at any moment that our faith is true. Where would you like me to begin? Shall I begin with the Holy Sepulchre, with Jerusalem, with the place from which the light came and toward which every eye is turned? If we go there, what distinguishes us from the others? Tell me. Is there not a difference there? Are we Orthodox not Christ’s beloved children? Has Christ not repeatedly shown His favor toward us there?
You may say to me, “Then why do the others who are there and see it not become Orthodox?” That is their concern, not mine. It belongs to them, and one day they will give an account to Him. My concern is to discern the truth manifested at the Holy Sepulchre. Tell me: in two thousand years, when has Christ ever given the Holy Fire to any other so-called Christian apart from the Orthodox? Do you know this? If you do not, it is a shame that you do not. Here we learn things we do not need. We acquire desires, information, and so forth. We have reached the moon; it is time to come back down to earth. I ask you: do you know that for two thousand years Christ has given the light of the Resurrection to no one else? Only the Orthodox Patriarch, or his representative, receives it.
Neither Catholics, Copts, Assyrians, Abyssinians, nor Protestants—no one else. At one time the Armenians tried to seize the Holy Fire by force. They bribed the Turkish authorities and shut our Patriarch outside. Christ worked a miracle. I do not know whether you have visited those holy places. If you have, or whenever you go there for the Resurrection, pay attention as soon as you enter through the Holy Gate. There are three columns, and the middle one is split open. The light of the Resurrection came out from there. Christ gave it to our Patriarch when the Armenians had bribed the ruling authorities and locked him outside. For two whole hours they were unable to receive the light. Then there was a tremendous sound, and the stone—the column—split open, and
it remains split to this day. When Orthodox Christians go there and know what happened, they kneel and venerate it with a kiss. It bears the fragrance of the Holy Sepulchre. Rain falls on it; it is covered with dust, scorched by the sun, exposed to the air, and dirtied. Yet its fragrance reaches you and assures you that something happened there. In this case the words are fulfilled: “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” It speaks through this grace. I have photographed it, made a slide of it, and venerated it. During the five times I went to the Holy Land, perhaps fifty times as I passed in and out through that doorway while staying there, I kissed it. I have firsthand knowledge and speak from personal experience. The light of the Resurrection alone, then, stands as a witness against all of them, and especially against the papists,
because Christ gives it to no one except the Orthodox. Furthermore, many founders of religious movements are presented to us—you hear about Muhammad, Buddha, Zoroaster, popes, Luther, Calvin, and so forth. They may be leaders of religious movements, yes, but not the Head of the true faith. There is a great difference. People often ask us, “What will happen to the Muslims who do not know? What will happen to the Buddhists who believe as they do? And what will happen to the others?” I do not know what will happen. What I do know is this: the founders of those people’s religions lie wrapped in their shrouds, in their graves. That I know. All the leaders of the so-called religions and religious movements lie bound in their shrouds, in their tombs.
Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified, has an empty tomb. The empty tomb of the Head of our faith is proof and assurance—I do not know what stronger word to use—that He is the true One. He is the One who conquered death. He was not swallowed up by death; death could not hold Him. In Him the words were fulfilled: “O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” Who else can withstand death? What is it that preoccupies mankind? Death is what preoccupies us. What happens beyond the grave? That is the question that troubles us. If your tomb is to open one day, it will open if you believe in the One who left His own tomb empty. This, then, is proof that ours is the true faith
and that we have the true Head, whom death could not hold, not even for so short a time. Go a little farther, about a kilometer, and you find that the tomb of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, is empty as well. If people knew only these things and were willing to reflect on them—if, while traveling across the world, they would take the opportunity to go there and be renewed—they would have much to say to themselves and to others. This alone would be enough for them to shut the door in the face of anyone who spoke nonsense to them. For today our faith is something tangible. We do not merely believe; we also see. If someone asks me, “Panagopoulos, do you believe?” I will answer, “No, I do not believe.” He will say, “Are you an unbeliever?” And I will reply, “I know. I do not merely believe; I know.”
Paul says that faith is “the evidence of things not seen.” Yet I also hold fast to something I have seen, because I was given the opportunity to see it closely and touch it. You come to the Holy Sepulchre and are overwhelmed by the fragrance. You come to the holy place where He was nailed to the Cross and are overwhelmed by the fragrance. What are we to say about these things? Do the others not see them? Do they not pass through those places? They look down on them. That is their affair. But what should I do? Should I say that nothing is there? Should I ask what will happen to the others? What happens to the others is not my concern. There is abundant light if they wish to see. There are people who receive the light of the Resurrection from us and yet refuse to accept the Orthodox faith. Go and look at the rear of the Holy Edicule: the Armenians remain closely attached to it. In the antechamber of the Holy Sepulchre there are two large openings through which our Patriarch distributes the light of the Resurrection that he receives over the Holy Sepulchre—and they receive it from our Patriarch.
Gentlemen, since you see that Christ does not give the light to you, but shows His preference and says, “This is the faith I desire,” why do you not embrace it? Why do you remain where you are? Why remain Armenians? Why Catholics? Why Protestants? Why, why, why remain Jews? Why Muslims? Why do you remain so when you see this miracle every year? Or do you think that we are mocking and deceiving them? Everyone is there: hostile Jews, Muslims, papists, Armenians—all of them. The Armenian Patriarch sits in the antechamber and sees how Christ gives the light of the Resurrection at midday on Holy Saturday, between eleven and one, when the service takes place. My beloved, whether it comes early or late, every year Christ repeats this miracle, this unique miracle—yet Christians do not even understand why they remain Catholic.
They have literally become hardened; they refuse to believe. There is so much light today, yet the whole Protestant world refuses to believe. In its pride it rejects all these things, as do the others surrounding this event. I am giving you a classic example: one of the “sides of Christ,” a tangible witness exposed there in the midst of enemies. It is guarded by Muslims and also by Jews, my beloved. Apart from our own guardian of the tomb, who is formally Orthodox, the locks, the doors, and the authorities remain in the hands of Christ’s enemies even to this day. What are we to say about this? Here is where we shall find faith. What will happen to the little Protestants, and what will happen to the others? What are we to seek? Faith. Where shall we find it? In the one true faith, into which all the others are called to come and be saved.
We have no reason to go anywhere else. Let us remain here, in our Church. Miracles occur in the Orthodox Church; they occur nowhere else. Is this not enough? Is this not an enduring and classic miracle, one that helps people know which faith is true, fall to their knees, and say, “My God, I thank You for the gift You have given me”? For we did nothing to obtain it. We did not labor for it, nor did we distinguish ourselves in any way. He arranged all these things in His love and wisdom. Have people ever reflected on this? If someone is willing to go there, he will see with his own eyes. His sight, his sense of smell—everything will assure him when he arrives. Is he unwilling? These things are not in heaven, beyond his reach. If he does not wish to go to Canaan to meet Him through faith, let him go to Jerusalem and meet Him through firsthand knowledge.
A journey to the Holy Land is worthwhile if it helps a person spend eternity with God. I believe it is worthwhile. We make so many other journeys and waste so much money on other things. Why, when this concerns our salvation, do people not go? Why are they not interested? Yet these things speak. That is why He says, “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” There, the stones opened their mouths, so to speak, and the very stones that split open then still remain. Those stones exist today, their mouths opened to remind us that the stones will always speak. If we wicked men cut the recording and replace it with something fashioned according to our deceit, these stones will still speak. The stones I am speaking of now also exist. They have been built into the Armenian Patriarchate. I was given the opportunity to see and photograph them. Yes. So this event alone, I say, this event that continues to occur—this alone...
This gives us the assurance and confirmation that our faith alone is true. Christ, then, has not abandoned us. This did not happen only in those days; even today, and until the end of the age, He will help those who are willing. He does not do this for show, but to help people even through their senses and to strengthen their faith. Yet this is not the only sign. When He departed, He left behind this great and enduring miracle: His empty tomb, the empty tomb of His Mother, and so many other events recorded even by the Jews, the enemies of Christ, and by the historians of that time, who testify to the historical reality of the person of Jesus and to His life in general. But afterward Christ also left us the Councils. What are the Councils? Tell me.
The Ecumenical Councils and the eleven local Councils—what are they? They are the work of the Holy Spirit, helping people to worship rightly—truly rightly—so that each person does not simply take a Gospel, invent a religion, seek followers, and imagine that he has discovered everything. For not all religions have Paradise; they have only Hell. Only the faith of Jesus the Crucified, Jesus of Nazareth, has Paradise. All the others have only Hell. We know this in practice. So when the Councils were convened, beginning with the earliest ones, did they not leave us abundant signs by which we may know that what they wrote—the Canons of our Church and the teachings spoken by our Fathers—
who were illumined by the Holy Spirit, is true and necessary, guarding us against heresies, doctrinal errors, and so many other things? Today the world faces the problem of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. What do they do? Above all, they reject the divinity of Jesus. Everything begins there. If Christ is not God, then nothing remains. And if Christ has not risen, then nothing remains. Everything rests upon faith in the divinity of Jesus and in the Resurrection of Jesus. A person sees these truths in Holy Scripture, but does not necessarily interpret them correctly. Then the Ecumenical Councils come, set them within their proper framework, and interpret them.
Let me tell you only about the events of the First Ecumenical Council. Do you remember what happened there?
People venerate Saint Spyridon, bear his name, and celebrate his feast. But have they ever paid attention to what his dismissal hymn says? “At the First Council you were shown to be a champion and a wonderworker, God-bearing Spyridon, our Father.” See what this Saint did at the First Ecumenical Council, where 318 Fathers were assembled. He came forward—this simple man, for he was not a scholar. He was simple, but humble. Through him Christ worked a miracle and demonstrated the three-hypostatic nature of the Godhead, which today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses call the invention of some satanic pope, and He also demonstrated the divinity of Jesus. What did Saint Spyridon do there? What was the issue?
The issue was whether Christ is God, whether the Three are One, and whether the One is Three. Thank you. These things cannot be comprehended by the intellect or mastered through human knowledge, yet they are received through faith. A person accepts all these things by faith, if he accepts them at all. And he does very badly when, if you will allow me to say so, he pokes his nose into questions called Mysteries, trying to solve them. The Mysteries are realities we are called to believe, without prying into them. The Christian says, “I believe this.” What do you believe? “I believe that God exists; indeed, I know that He exists. But I do not know what He is.” Nor do I descend into arguments about it, because I cannot discuss and comprehend the nature and essence of God. I can only believe it.
For this reason, a person should regard himself as a blind man holding a white cane, by means of which he travels safely. For the Christian, that white cane is faith. If, in his pride, the blind man casts away this white cane—which helps him and enables others to keep him safe—the consequences will be grave. In the same way, if the Christian casts away faith, the consequences will be grave.
In the earliest days, my dear friends, the divinity of Jesus was challenged; it was claimed that Christ is not God. A great schism arose in the Church, and the Church was greatly shaken. The first devout emperor, Constantine the Great, convened the First Ecumenical Council. He took care to gather all the Fathers, both the learned and the simple-hearted, in the Holy Spirit. He presided, seated upon the imperial throne, and signed the proceedings of the First Ecumenical Council in red ink. They were to define dogmatically whether Christ truly is God, whether He truly is one of the Holy Trinity, whether the Holy Trinity is true, and so forth. Such questions are not resolved by words alone. They are not resolved by words. Intellectuals, in particular, try to find various ways of escaping the issue so that they can put forward their own ideas and theories. Then praxis—the deed itself—intervenes.
Our Church has a beautiful hymn which says, “Praxis became the foundation for theoria.” Praxis, the active ascetic life, comes forward and sets abstract theory aside; and something like this happened there. Athanasius spoke, Nicholas spoke, Achillius spoke—great luminaries and great minds all spoke. Yet no one managed to silence the unbridled mouth of Arius. I do not know whether you are familiar with the events of the First Ecumenical Council, which others dismiss as mere human commandments. There were four miracles of the Holy Spirit. This is precisely why everything established by our Councils to guard us comes from the Holy Spirit.
What was enacted there has equal authority with the Gospel, equal authority with Holy Scripture. If one wished to arrange the miracles chronologically, the first miracle at the First Ecumenical Council was not performed by Saint Spyridon. It was performed by Saint Achillius, the bishop of Larissa. Before the Council had even begun, he worked a miracle in what we might call the antechamber or corridor, during a dispute between Arius and Achillius. Achillius challenged him. He picked up a stone and said, “If what you say is true—if the Holy Trinity is not as the Church teaches and Christ is not God—then command this stone to bring forth oil.” Arius turned the challenge back on him and said, “What did you say?” Achillius replied, “In the name of the Holy Trinity,” and the stone brought forth oil.
That was the first miracle. The second took place during the Council and demonstrated the dogma through a deed. As those of you who have read these accounts know, Saint Spyridon asked to speak. I would dare say that he was perhaps the simplest of them in matters of learning; he had little connection with scholarly knowledge. But God illumined him to demonstrate the truth of the dogma in a practical way. When he went to the Council, he had brought a piece of roof tile hidden in his cassock. He asked to speak, but they would not permit him. The other Fathers were afraid to let him speak, lest, because he was not learned, he might harm their case.
They had brought the debate to a certain point and hoped to prevail through their arguments and through their response to Arius, so they would not give him the floor. In the end, Tradition tells us, Constantine the Great intervened, and Saint Spyridon was permitted to speak. He stepped into the center with the tile in his hand, called upon Arius, and said, “Arius, in the name of the Father”—and fire rose from the tile—“and of the Son”—and water poured down—“and of the Holy Spirit”—and he showed him the earth remaining in his hand. Three, yet one; one tile, yet three. “In the name of the Father, Arius,” and fire came down; “and of the Son, Arius,” and water rose up; “and of the Holy Spirit,” and he showed him the tile’s earth. Faced with this deed, which was certainly from the Holy Spirit, our Fathers stood firm and unyielding. Even Arius then said, “The words are human, but the works are the Lord’s.”
You might reasonably suppose that Arius then believed. Yet despite everything demonstrated before him, he did not believe. In his cunning, he managed to conceal himself and continue as before; ultimately, he refused to believe. I want to warn you to beware of heresy, because heresy leaves no room for grace. It is one thing to be a sinner, another to be an atheist, another to be an unbeliever, and another to be a heretic. All these people are heretics. The heretic knowingly calls white black and black white. Do you know what question his mother asked him? “My child,” she said, “by the milk with which I nursed you and by the nine months I carried you in my womb, I adjure you to tell me the truth: are you right, or is Athanasius right?”
She meant Athanasius the Great, who was there at the time. Do you know what Arius answered? “Mother, Athanasius is right.” “Then, my child…” “But I cannot turn back.” And he persisted. That is why we have the dreadful situation we see today, and this whole world that is being destroyed hangs around his neck like a pendant, wherever he now is. Yes, this is a grave matter. Christ, then, has not abandoned us. That was the second miracle. What was the third miracle at the First Ecumenical Council? Saint Nicholas, that gentle man and image of meekness, could no longer endure the unbridled, satanic mouth of Arius, and struck him across the head. According to the Canons, because he had raised his hand against someone in the emperor’s presence, his hand was to be cut off.
They stripped him of his episcopal rank and put him in prison, while considering whether his hand should be cut off after the Council’s work was finished. The next morning, when one of his own people learned that he was imprisoned, he went to bring him some comfort. He found Saint Nicholas wearing his omophorion, holding the Gospel, and reading. Where had these come from? The Lord and the Most Holy Theotokos had visited him in prison. “Nicholas, why are you here? What have you done?” “For love of You, Lord.” The Lord placed the omophorion upon him and restored him after the others had stripped him of his rank and deposed him, while the Most Holy Theotokos gave him the Gospel. Is that not a miracle? Does it not show that Christ approves the true faith? There was also a fourth miracle, performed by—
but I do not remember exactly what that man did. Thus, the First Ecumenical Council had four miracles. These are things Christ has placed before us like red warning lamps, saying, “Take care: this far, and no farther.” He did not leave us desolate. He did not leave us with a dry text of Holy Scripture, because each person interprets Scripture however he wishes. Rather, Holy Tradition comes and gives light. I want us to know, for as long as we live, and to pass on to our children and to others, that it is true that the Holy Spirit illumined the Apostles and they wrote; but it is equally true that the Holy Spirit illumined the God-bearing Fathers to interpret what He had written through the Apostles. For precisely this reason, those people—
who study Holy Scripture apart from Patristic theology are in error. Every year they will invent another religion of their own, one that has only Hell and no Paradise. This is why the Orthodox Church has remained unchanged: each person does not interpret the Scriptures for himself. And this is why, at the beginning and end of everything, we always say, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” How do they help us? They are the ones who gave us the true lights and guided us, if we wish, through the confusion in which people walk. Since I have spoken to you about the Councils, let me tell you another miracle that took place at the Fourth Ecumenical Council. At that time they were dealing with Monophysitism—the question of whether Christ has one nature, and so forth.
The two sides came into conflict at the Council, and they agreed that each side would write its position on a sheet of paper. What did they do then? They went to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople and opened the reliquary of Saint Euphemia, whose whole body rested there. They placed both documents in her hands, locked the reliquary, and agreed to open it after three days. Indeed, three days later they opened it and found the Orthodox confession in her hands and the false teaching at her feet. Our Church therefore sings—though we Orthodox do not pay attention: “You greatly gladdened the Orthodox and put the false teachers to shame, O Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ; for you confirmed what the Fathers of the Fourth Council rightly defined as dogma.” Who, then, can stand there—
and sit discussing what will happen to the poor Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, and all the rest? One God came down; one God left us the means of knowing the truth; one God richly illumines the Orthodox believer so that he will not lose the moment or fall into error. We try to be more compassionate than the Lover of mankind and more royal than the king. But what will happen to us? He did not tell us what will happen to them; He told us what will happen to us. I do not know what will happen to them. He knows. The question is what will happen to us. It is no accident that we became Orthodox, and it is no accident that we became Greeks, my dear friends. It is no accident. When Christ saw that the Greeks were seeking Him, He said with joy, “Now the hour has come—”
“for the Son of Man to be glorified.” Orthodoxy alone, and Hellenism alone, faithfully preserve the sacred deposit entrusted by Christ, which leads rightly into the Kingdom of Heaven and assures Paradise. Do not find this strange, and do not take it pridefully, as though it were some achievement of ours. It is the mercy of God—the mercy of God. Do I know why He did this? I do not know why He did it or why He showed such generosity. Why was I not born a Muslim, but born a Greek? He knows. I am called to offer Him profound thanks, and to receive and preserve this gift.
You know, an elder once told me, when I happened to be near him: “Dimitri, take care. To acquire something, one needs a school-leaving grade of ‘very good.’ But to preserve it, one needs a grade of ‘excellent.’” Orthodoxy was given to us freely, but we must guard it as the apple of our eye, if we wish to be certain that Christ goes before us to the place where we are going, on our behalf, and that one day we shall meet Him. We have a holy faith, bound together with Hellenism and its precious heritage. Do not allow yourselves to be assimilated; be on your guard. Little time remains. What is below will be raised up, and what is above will be brought down, and everyone will take his proper place. Hellenism, like another Israel, has a great mission in the world. At the very least, preserve as much of your Greek as you can. Make sacrifices and teach it to your children.
The Greek language. No other writing can fully convey these meanings, and no body of Patristic literature can be properly interpreted through foreign languages apart from Greek. I do not say this out of pride; I say it from a sense of duty, as a reminder. It was no accident that Christ enlisted Alexander the Great to go down there, so that Greek letters and the Greek language would be found there. Christ said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega.” Which alphabet, O Lord, has an Alpha and an Omega? No other alphabet. Which alphabet interprets the Holy Trinity and the divinity of Jesus? Do you know what one of the Sibyls says? She says that the name of Jesus would contain four vowels and two consonants, and that its numerical value would be eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds: 888.
Do you know that the Greek alphabet explains why “Jesus” has the numerical value 888? It has eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta: eight units. Iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi: eight tens. Rho, sigma, tau, and the rest: eight hundreds. Did you know this? Either others want to bury these things and erase them, or we ourselves fail to pay attention and flirt with foreign ways. Look at what the Jews are doing today as they build the new Israel, and how they protect their own people, their children, and themselves in order to preserve their faith. They go back to their ancient names and coins, to their earliest years. Yet they should not be puffed up with pride, because the new Israel is Hellenism; it is Christianity.
We too are Hebrews, descended from Abraham. Read chapter twelve of the First Book of Maccabees, and you will see that we are Hebrews. We must preserve these two things distinctly: the Greek language and Hellenism, together with Orthodox Christianity. Consider also the emblem of the Palaiologoi, the double-headed eagle: the Church holds the Cross in one hand, and the homeland holds the sword. These two belong together. That is why every power in the world is trying to break us apart, both in language and in faith; and they will break us apart if we are not watchful. We have a great God, even though throughout Great Lent the services proclaim, “Who is so great a God as our God?” We pay no attention to these things, and little by little we are assimilated. I do not know—please forgive the manner and tone in which I am speaking to you—but these things are necessary. We must learn them.
They are being lost, and many among us do not want even to hear these things. Yet if we do not see it here in this life, our souls will see what part Orthodoxy is to play in the world, and how it will once again spread its light throughout a world now covered by such darkness. All these things are connected. And I do not know whether you were scandalized by what I said about Alexander the Great, because Satan has many ways of working. I would like to tell you one more thing, simply for emphasis. Holy Scripture tells us that when Alexander the Great reached Jerusalem, he dismounted, kissed the rabbi’s hand, and the rabbi gave him the keys to the city. That evening, when a banquet was held, his aide-de-camp Parmenion would not sit at the table.
He was offended, and he showed it plainly. When the banquet ended, Alexander approached him and said, “What sort of behavior was that? What happened to you tonight?” Parmenion replied, “My king, we have never dismounted before anyone since we began our campaign. How could I bear to see you dismount, bow before a priest, and kiss his hand? And how could I sit at such a banquet and honor it?” Alexander the Great answered him: “If you knew what God told me yesterday afternoon about this city and this rabbi, would you have behaved this way?” “What did God tell you?” he asked. “He told me that this city belongs to Him.”
“I was not to harm it. The rabbi would give me the keys to the city.” The rabbi, for his part, had asked in his own way whether he should defend the city and fight. They used an oracle called the ephod, a square cloth with twelve stones around it and a large emerald. They would ask God a question with a yes-or-no answer, and according to the flashes of light they received a response. They too were told: “The man who is coming belongs to Me. Do not resist him; give him the keys.” And on the slope of what is now called Little Galilee, beneath the place where the first appearance took place on the night of Pascha, there is a memorial of this meeting between Alexander and the rabbi. My beloved, do we understand what God arranges around Orthodoxy and Hellenism, and how He governs the world?
Do we know? We see with human eyes. We see opposing powers and all the rest, and we begin to sink. We are like Peter, who began to sink when he took his eyes off Christ. That is not our task. Our task is to keep our eyes fixed on Him, and He will provide for everything else. We did not come here for Christ. We came here for our own advantage.
We came for this present moment, yet Christ runs close beside us. “Your mercy shall pursue me,” David said beforehand, “all the days of my life, until the end of the age.” His mercy pursues us and draws near to us. He raises up churches for us; He gives us clergy, speakers, and writings. He calls each one of us, so that we may not be lost, because we need all these things. I will not be the one to say it to you—you will have to give an account one day.
In any case, having left the empty tomb of our Lord, the empty tomb of our Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Ecumenical Councils, where we see how God provided so that we would not be led astray, we now come to other enduring—one might say permanently enduring—witnesses for us Orthodox Christians: the holy relics. Have you ever seriously considered this? When you go and stand before the sixteen-hundred-year-old relic of Saint Spyridon, what will you say? That there is nothing there? That our faith is false? Read the life of Saint Spyridon and see what he has done to the Catholics, how greatly he has shaken them, and how his relic remains there by God’s power. And do you think it is accidental when you see...
...five beacons, five great lamps, in the Ionian Islands? For in the Ionian Islands, if you do not know, there are five holy relics that can be touched and examined. Come forward, then, you who doubt, you of little faith, and you who have no faith, and take your position before them. Two are on Corfu: the relics of Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora the Empress. On Kefalonia there is the relic of Saint Gerasimos. Much has been written about it recently in the newspapers...
...with much deception and corruption, and I shall speak about that as well. On Zakynthos there are two relics, those of Saint Dionysios and Saint Joseph. Do you think that these five relics, placed along the Ionian Islands from Corfu all the way down, do not form a kind of spiritual line—a dividing line that says, “Light reaches this far; beyond it lies darkness”? Were they placed there along that route by accident, simply because people wished it so? It is no accident. All these things are given for us who rely on our senses, so that we may see them, rekindle our faith, and be watchful. Yes. How many scientists have stood before the relic of Saint Spyridon and raised their hands in surrender, unable to explain it?
Saint Spyridon was the instrument Christ used so that His divinity and the Holy Trinity might be confessed. His relic remains there to this day. We deny it, yet even the demons confess it. The evil spirits tremble before Saint Spyridon. When the Queen of Cities fell, a devout priest—perhaps you know the history—carried the saint’s relic away from Constantinople. He loaded two relics onto a mule, packed them in straw, and tied them up as we would tie bales of straw back in our homeland. In this way he brought them down through Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Thessaly, Igoumenitsa, and Arta, and from there he continued onward.
He went farther away when the Turks came down and reached Thesprotia as well. In fact, regarding Saint Spyridon, perhaps an opportunity will arise during these evening lectures—for I have slides of all these relics, and with the grace of the Lord I will show them to you. His head had been cut off because he was tall and it protruded from the bale of straw, so it was placed inside; the head has now been reattached. You will see clearly how it is joined to the body. What can you say, O man? The demons confess the truth, so what will you say? That these are mummies? Such claims are absurd. A senior judicial official on Corfu doubted the authenticity of the relic.
It is a true relic, with flesh and all the rest. I do not know whether you are aware that once a year they hold a service in which they change the saint’s slippers. It is not because he wears holes in them by walking, as some people say. Rather, his feet are the only parts exposed from the rest of his body, and people venerate and kiss them. Our saliva, lipstick, dust, and dirt soil the cloth placed over his feet, so they remove it and put on a new one. They hold a service for this. These are his slippers. They cut them into very small pieces and make them into little blessings and protective keepsakes...
The pilgrims who come are given a small blessing to place upon their children or to wear themselves. For if even the shadow of the Apostles Paul and Peter, and their handkerchiefs, raised people up and brought about resurrections, how much more these sacred bodies, which are filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit? They are not preserved with chemicals. All such explanations have been shown to be absurd when people have tried, by their own methods and their science, to explain what cannot be explained. This judicial official therefore asked when the changing of the slippers would take place. They told him the appointed day. Amid the crowd gathered around the Metropolitan and the others—some pulling off the stockings, others lifting things, and so forth—he managed to get close enough to put out his hand and grasp the saint’s calf, to see whether it was truly flesh. He did grasp the calf, and it felt just like our own.
These are not corpses; they are Saints. And now I leave one case and turn to another. Do you know what happened to the chairman of the committee that went to examine the relic of Saint Gerasimos, after newspapers claimed that the body had been cut up, sold, and so forth? He felt the saint’s pulse, and the pulse of Saint Gerasimos was beating. Did you know that? This gentleman, Georgios Avlamis, remained there for twenty days. The fraudulent newspapers do not report such things. He stayed for twenty days. What, then, is our Orthodoxy? Why should we be of little faith? Do we believe in corpses, as some people claim? We believe in relics filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. As for the official who grasped Saint Spyridon’s calf, he went home that evening and tried to sleep—but how could he sleep? He struggled all night, while his wife shook him...
...trying to wake him, but he would not awaken. He suffered the whole night, foaming at the mouth and drenched in sweat. In the morning, when God brought the daylight and he awoke, his wife asked him, “Were you suffering, my husband? What was wrong?” “Leave me,” he said, “leave me.” “Why? What happened?” The saint had stood over him, saying, “Unbeliever, have you had your fill after grasping my calf?” And he threatened him before his very eyes. “Unbeliever, are you satisfied now that you have touched my leg? Now you will believe because you know.” Such knowledge receives no reward. You understand why, do you not? Knowledge is not rewarded; faith is rewarded. Knowledge leaves room for pride: “I understood it. I was clever.” What kind of cleverness is that? It would have been better not to be clever in that way. Do you understand? These are recent events I am telling you about, and yet there are people today who dismiss them as nonsense. We Orthodox see them, experience them, receive assurance of them...
...touch them, taste them, and smell them; all our senses are satisfied. Christ has not left us without testimony. Why, then, should I leave and go to another church or another doctrine? They have no firm evidence to offer us. Since the Schism, the Papists have had nothing comparable to show us, nor do the various groups and the many heresies that exist here. They have no guarantees to offer. What can they tell us? We have proofs to present. Yet I do not know, and I wonder who has cast the evil eye upon us, so that we abandon so many truths and run after so many lies.
I cannot understand it. In any case, I would like to stop here, because I also want to speak to you about the remaining matters and gather whatever else I can, so that I may revive and strengthen your faith.
I cannot compel you. I can only say to you, gently and with all affection: hold fast to our true faith; cherish our Church, the Mysteries, and the Christ of the Orthodox Church. For only there do we have assurance concerning the world to come.

Είναι θέμα πανεπιστημίου, είναι θέμα πρακτικής. Σε τόσες άλλες πλευρές τη χρησιμοποιούμε και ωφελούμεθα· αν, λέγω, θέλαμε, θα είχαμε να ωφεληθούμε πολύ. Να μου επιτρέψετε, λοιπόν, να σας παρουσιάσω μια σειρά από αυτές τις πλευρές του Κυρίου, που μπορούμε ανά πάσαν στιγμήν να ελέγχουμε το ορθόν της πίστεώς μας. Από πού θέλετε να σας αρχίσω; Να σας αρχίσω από τον Πανάγιο Τάφο, να σας αρχίσω από την Ιερουσαλήμ, από εκεί που ήρθε το φως, από εκεί που στρέφονται όλων τα βλέμματα. Αν πάμε εκεί πέρα, τι διαφορά έχουμε με τους άλλους; Πείτε μας. Δεν έχουμε μια διαφορά εμείς εκεί; Εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι δεν είμαστε το αγαπημένο παιδί του Χριστού; Δεν έχει δείξει επανειλημμένως την προτίμησή Του ο Χριστός σε εμάς εκεί;
Τα γεγονότα να σας πω μόνο της Πρώτης Οικουμενικής Συνόδου. Θυμόσαστε τα γεγονότα;
Ευσεβούνται τον Άγιο Σπυρίδωνα ή φέρουν το όνομά του, τον εορτάζουν. Πρόσεξαν ποτέ τι λέει το απολυτίκιον του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνος; «Της Συνόδου της πρώτης ανεδείχθης υπέρμαχος και θαυματουργός, θεοφόρε Σπυρίδων, πάτερ ημών». Να τι έκανε αυτός ο Άγιος στην Πρώτη Οικουμενική Σύνοδο, όπου ήταν 318 πατέρες. Αυτός παρουσιάστηκε, και μάλιστα ο απλούς αυτός, διότι δεν ήταν ο λόγιος. Ήταν ο απλούς αυτός, αλλά ταπεινός. Και δι’ αυτού ο Χριστός θαυματούργησε και απέδειξε το τρισυπόστατο της Θεότητας, το οποίο λέγουν οι Ιεχωβίτες σημερινοί ότι είναι εφεύρεσις κάποιου σατανά πάπα, και τη θεότητα του Ιησού. Τι έκανε εκεί πέρα; Ποιο ήταν το θέμα;
