Summary
God answers the Israelites’ complaints in the wilderness by abundantly providing quail in the evening and manna each morning. The Sabbath command is applied to Christian Sunday, which should be devoted to worship, spiritual renewal, and trust that honest labor under God’s blessing is sufficient. During the battle with Amalek, Israel prevailed while Moses prayed with outstretched arms, supported by Aaron and Hur, revealing the power of prayer and a foreshadowing of the Cross.

Tonight we continue from where we left off. As I see here, we are in chapter 16 of Exodus, specifically at the point where God gave the Hebrews quail in the wilderness.
Just a moment, and a word in answer to those who say that God did not give people meat. Apparently they are holier than holy! Yet here we see that He gives them meat. He Himself gives it to them. And besides that, He created so many thousands of kinds of animals, birds, and so forth.
Thank you. Otherwise, with all their multiplying, they would have eaten us, would they not? Now, if a person willingly wishes to avoid meat because of other consequences, that is another matter. One thing is one thing, and the other is another. It is up to him. But if he is weak, meat is often even given to the sick as a tonic: a little boiled meat or a little roast meat. I do not know whether you have ever reflected on how many illnesses and how many kinds of food a single animal provides for. A butcher has a calf hanging there, for example. One customer comes and says, “I want a little meat for boiling,” and the butcher cuts it from the appropriate part. “I want some for roasting.” Certainly. “I want a steak.” And some for you. “I want a sirloin.” Certainly. “I want fillet.” Certainly. “I want some for a stew.” And some for you too. What could you ask for that cannot be found on a single animal, satisfying every need and every whim of His pampered darling, man—only for man to blaspheme Him?
In any case, there in the wilderness He now brought forth quail. Since there were three million people, imagine how many quail there must have been. He did not send them half a portion or tell them, “Divide one into four.” God is rich. “And in the evening,” it says, “quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning a layer of dew lay around the camp.” In the evening He sent them meat, and in the morning He sent them bread. For they were complaining that they had lived better back there in Egypt, in slavery. They were making bricks, of course, and they were captives, but they ate well. The same thing happens to us: we remain captives of Satan so that we may live comfortably. We must not do that. In any case, have you seen a layer of dew? Have you seen how white the dew is in the morning?
“And when the layer of dew lifted, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there was a fine, round substance, as fine as frost upon the ground.” It was something like coriander seed, something like trahana, like tiny grains—exactly so. It was manna. And when the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “What is this?” The words “What is this?” are rendered as “man.” Man—what is this? And from the Hebrew word man that they spoke came the word manna. Do you understand? “What is this?” is man in Hebrew, and from man, meaning “What is this?” the name manna remained. And Moses said to them, “This is the bread,” for he had spoken with God about the matter in prayer and had told Him that the people were complaining.
They want meat and bread. “I will satisfy you, then; I will give you both.” So Moses explains to them that this is the bread which the Lord is giving them to eat. “This is the word which the Lord has commanded: Gather from it as much as each person needs to eat, one omer for every person.” An omer was approximately—
—another unit of measure, about three kilograms, according to the records. So each person was permitted to gather three kilograms. Three kilograms apiece. If there were five in the family, fifteen kilograms. If there were two, ten kilograms. If there were seven, twenty-one kilograms. No more. It was not that there was not enough; there was. But when the sun rose, it disappeared. They had to gather it before sunrise. “According to the number of souls”—according to how many people were in the household—“let each one take his portion.”
“Thus the Israelites did, and they gathered, some more and some less.” Some, perhaps out of greed and without regard for God’s command not to gather more, did so because putting something aside does not show complete trust in God. “How do I know? Will He send it again tomorrow? What if His machinery breaks down? What if we go hungry? I had better gather some extra.”
Man is like that... But when God says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”—that is, “I am watching over you; I will not abandon you”—and since we confess an almighty God, we must never lose heart in this matter. “And when they measured it with the omer,” with that measure, “the one who had gathered much”—
—“had no more, and the one who had gathered little had no less. Each received as much as he needed for his nourishment.” On the first day, it says, one gathered much and another little. But afterward they took the measure and measured it out, so that they would gather neither less nor more. Then Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it until morning.” None of it was to remain. But they did not obey Moses. Some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.
Thank you. As our Christ said, the manna was a type, a foreshadowing, of His own Body and Blood. “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died,” He says. Does He not say this in John? “I will give you My own manna, and whoever eats it will never die.” This manna is also connected with the Passover lamb, if you remember, concerning which He had likewise commanded that nothing should remain.
If anything remained, they were to burn it. And today, whatever remains of the Lamb—the Body and Blood of the Lord—is consumed; it is not set aside. Moses was angry, it says, and at the same time the manna stank. This was God’s answer, teaching them to trust in Him. “And they gathered it every morning, each as much as he needed for his nourishment; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.” You cannot say, “I will go at noon, whenever I please.” No. You must go at the appointed time. Otherwise, afterward you will find nothing. It is the same now. You must go to the Church in the morning, when the service is held.
You will go because it is Sunday. Will you go whenever you please? You will find nothing. You must go at the time when the manna is there; you must be present to receive from the manna, from the Body and Blood of Christ. As we said the day before yesterday, the week is not counted from Monday, although we treat Monday as its first day. I said the day before yesterday that Monday itself protests and says, “I am the second day—can you not hear my name? Why do you call me the first? I am not the first.” Sunday is the first day, the first day after the Sabbath, queen and lady. The first day is Sunday. Monday is the second day, Tuesday the third, Wednesday the fourth, and Thursday the fifth. Friday, instead of being called the sixth day, is called the Day of Preparation, because on that day they prepared for the Sabbath, since the Sabbath was a day of rest—
—for both people and animals. They even removed the animals’ saddles and let them go free to rest.
Thank you. “They gathered it,” then, “every morning,” because it melted as soon as the sun rose. “But on the sixth day they gathered twice as much food.” That is, they gathered for Friday and Saturday, two omers for each person, six okas apiece. “And all the rulers of the congregation came and reported this to Moses.” He said to them, “This is what the Lord has said: Tomorrow is the Sabbath.” The rulers did not yet understand how this worked, because it was only the beginning; and when they saw—
—that some had gathered more than the amount first commanded, they hurried to report it to Moses. Moses then explained why this had happened. “Tomorrow,” he said, “is the Sabbath, a holy rest unto the Lord.” It is a day holy to the Lord, a day dedicated to Him. For us this is now Sunday, because on that day our Lord rose, and so the day has a special significance for us. He raised us with Himself, and we have transferred the Sabbath—that is, our day of rest and repose—to Sunday. “Bake what you have to bake and boil what you have to boil, and store up whatever remains for tomorrow.”
“It shall be kept until morning.” In other words, on Friday prepare the food you will need for the Sabbath as well. Eat what you eat, and then keep the food for the following day. On that next day every kind of work was forbidden. Even to this day there are people who never cook on Sunday. They always prepare their food on Saturday. Sunday is entirely for the soul and for God. They arrange to attend the Church, and then devote the whole day to spiritual things. There are no pots and preparations and the like, just as the Hebrews did in those days. What we now do on Saturday, they did on Friday, and that is how it is.
“They stored it until morning,” it says, “as Moses commanded, and it did not stink.” Ordinarily, it should have stunk when they kept it for the next day. God wanted to teach them to believe the words “Give us this day,” as we say in the Lord’s Prayer. Those words—“Give us this day”—express trust in God. Yet on the Sabbath, it says, although they kept it, it did not stink. “Nor was there any worm in it.” And Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath unto the Lord. Today you will not find it in the field.” None fell that day.
It was not merely that He forbade them to gather it, bake it, and so forth, for they did bake it. It was food rather like flatbread, but flatbread with honey. It had all the proper ingredients; it was not tasteless. Everything was there. After all, God did not lack such things. And I do not want anyone to imagine that it was being made in some oven or growing on trees in heaven. It was purely an operation of the Holy Spirit, and He fed them in this way for forty years. Was it only for a day or two? It was for forty whole years. When they entered the Promised Land, the manna ceased to fall, because they had begun cultivating the land. While the Hebrews were journeying from Egypt to the Promised Land, they did not work or toil; they did not sow or build. Everything was provided. A cloud covered them from the sun.
It gave them light; they needed neither acetylene lamps nor electrical installations. Their shoes did not wear through for forty years, and their clothes did not wear through for forty years. Do you understand? And you should know that God is still the same. I say this for those whose faith is weak. Sometimes they panic and may even act against their conscience and the law of God, supposedly to secure their daily bread or provide for their old age. Be careful of this. It is a device of Satan. Never accept anything or try to acquire anything bearing the devil’s signature. The devil does not sign with his hand; he signs with his foot. “Did I sign it?” If lies and trickery entered into it and that is how you obtained these things, then his mark is upon them. And in this I recoil from the person who is fed by the devil—
It is as though such a person were saying that God cannot feed me, that He cannot do anything—as though there were anything God could not do! “Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, none will be found.” Even if they wanted to gather it, there was none to be found. In this way God showed them that He did not consent to it under any circumstances. Nor did He make it easy for them, because if manna had fallen on the ground, it would have been a temptation: it would be lying there outside, and they might go and take a little, even just a little. That would have been a temptation. He does not tempt them; indeed, He helps them.
Even heaven rests. And when heaven, which has no need of rest, ceases its work, why should the earth not rest, when it needs to be renewed? Is that not so? Even animals need rest so that they can continue working afterward. And man needs to rest, to wash, and to give his body relief from monotonous labor. For you see, we shall depart from this world. Whatever a person may build, he will leave it all here. I do not know whether you noticed something I said the other day: shrouds have no pockets. Why do they not sew on two little pockets, perhaps for a handkerchief? Why not? A philosopher said to me yesterday, “Shrouds have no pockets.” And it is true; there is wisdom in that. You cannot take anything with you. You are merely a steward here. The bricks, stones, electrical fittings, and everything else will all remain behind, cold and lifeless.
Such foolish things! So God did not tempt them by sending down the manna and then telling them, “You must not take it.” He did not send any at all. And He left us an enduring lesson: we too should not work on Sunday. Sunday does not belong to us. Sunday is dedicated to God and to the soul; all the other days are devoted to the body. A week has one hundred and sixty-eight hours—multiply seven by twenty-four and you will see. Yet many people do not give even one hour to God. It is not that God needs it. I need God; we all need God. Therefore, it is for our own good to spend one hour giving thanks to God. In ancient times, the first Christians worked, and Holy Communion was brought to them in the fields. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated at night.
That was in the catacombs and under similar conditions. But today we are free. Today there is no reason for a person to work so much. Some people have even managed to work neither on the seventh nor on the eighth day: they have Saturday off as well. And I am astonished that no one goes to the Church, even though they have hours to spare.
Thank you. So it is not a matter of needing more hours to work in order, supposedly, to survive. No. It is a matter of unbelief, little faith, or ignorance. Stop working on Sundays and feast days if you can, because there are certain feast days that some people cannot avoid working on because of the nature of their employment. But they should know that when they work on a day when they should not have worked, they owe that day; it is charged to their account, and they should see to it that they repay the debt. And when they have a day off...
Thank you. Especially here in the great cities, there are churches where the Divine Liturgy is celebrated every day. For example, nearby there is the Ascension, the Metochion, and churches in Pangrati. The Divine Liturgy is celebrated every day except for the two days of the year on which it is not permitted. On those two days there is no Divine Liturgy; on every other day there is. A person therefore has no excuse. God might say, as it were, “Very well, I shall credit you the day. You will not come to the Church today, but you will come tomorrow, when you have your day off.” Yet we neither go to the Church nor offer our day off; we keep it for ourselves. That is what we are like. In any case, God bears with us—but for how long?
Some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found nothing. Here this applies in the opposite way.
On the seventh day—which for us today is Sunday—many of us go out to work and gather, yet they gather nothing. They even lose what they earned during the rest of the week. For, as Christ says, “He who does not gather with Me scatters.” Read the tenth chapter of Matthew and you will find it there. Gather as much as you like; if it does not bear the Lord’s mark of authenticity, one day it will be lost. It may be through illness, shipwreck, or any number of other things—I do not know how. Either you, your children, or someone else will lose it. One day these things will be lost if they do not bear the authenticity and signature of Christ. So they too went out to gather—those cunning people I mentioned earlier.
They found nothing. And we too go out to earn money on Sunday—not for necessities, but for luxuries. The necessities are already provided for. Six days of work are enough for a person; God has arranged it so, unless he chooses to live foolishly. If he wants to spend his entire week’s wages over the weekend, then of course they will not be enough, and on Monday morning he will have to borrow. But if he chooses to live as Christ desires, his wages will be enough, and he will live with something left over. Then the Lord said to Moses—God had seen from above that they had gone out to gather—“How long will you refuse to keep My commandments?” Sunday rest is a commandment of God. “And My laws—how long?” Do not imagine that this was addressed only to them, because the Scripture retains its full authority.
“Did I come,” He says, “to abolish the Law or the Prophets? I came not to abolish, but to fulfill.” Therefore, what is said here applies to us as well. “How long, then,” He says, “will you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? See that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore, on the sixth day He gives you bread for two days.”
He gave you the Sabbath as a day of rest, and on Friday He gives you bread for two days. Have you not often seen notices in the newspapers or posted at bakeries saying that on Saturday bread will be distributed for three days, because the bakeries will be closed for a holiday—perhaps a national holiday or something of that kind? The notice says, “We will distribute bread,” and everyone goes and takes the amount of bread they need.
A little incident.
“Remain,” He says, “each of you in his place. Let no one go out from his place on the seventh day.” And the people rested on the seventh day. Indeed, they obeyed and observed it as a day of rest, a cessation from labor. “And the house of Israel called its name man.” From the question they had asked when they first saw it, the people called it manna—man. “And it was like coriander seed,” what we call coriander, “white, and its taste was like wafers made with honey.”
It was like our own pies, like pancakes made with honey—something delicious, not tasteless, since it was given to them as their daily food. Someone may say, “But to eat the same thing for forty years!” How many years have you been eating bread? Have you grown tired of it? How many years have you been drinking the same water? Have you grown tired of that? These things we say are foolish, are they not? Yet if a person is ill-tempered, he will always find fault—even with God Himself. And Moses said:
“This is what the Lord has commanded: Fill an omer with it”—about three kilograms—“to be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which He fed us in the wilderness after He brought us out of the land of Egypt.” He also told them
to gather some.
Three kilograms, one omer as it is called, was to be preserved so that they could show it to later generations and to their children. It would remain as a sacred keepsake among them, reminding their descendants of what God had done. He wanted this to remain as an example, you understand. I do not know whether you are aware that even today, during the month of October, the Jews go out and live in booths for fifteen days, in order to remind their children of all they endured during those forty years in the wilderness.
God had given Moses a similar command here, and there is more to it. Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put some of it in the jar.” This was in addition to what each family was to preserve. Aaron, as the head of the Church and as high priest, now receives a separate command from Moses. For, I do not know whether you have noticed, Moses speaks with God.
There is more. Moses speaks to Aaron, and Aaron speaks on Moses’ behalf because Moses was slow of speech. “Take a jar,” he tells him, “put a full omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord, to be preserved throughout your generations.” They were to take a jar, put some of the manna in it, and place it inside the Ark of the Testimony before the Lord. Here the Ark was a type of the Church.
When our Most Holy Theotokos entered the Holy of Holies, she found there many types that spoke of her. She found, for example, the stone tablets on which the Word of God was written. Through those stone tablets, God sent us His Word.
Later, through the Most Holy Virgin, God sent us His Word incarnate. Those tablets were a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. Inside was also Aaron’s rod that had blossomed. A rod blossoms; a Virgin gives birth. Inside was the golden censer, which, as I told you another day, is a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. Even today, the censer is a type of her: its lower part, the womb of the censer, holds the burning coal, Christ, and sends forth the incense, the Holy Spirit. So inside there was also the golden jar containing the manna. Perhaps it was gilded later.
That jar was gilded just as we gild icons and other historic and sacred objects, and it remained there inside. It too was a type of the Theotokos. So, in taking it there, Aaron was doing nothing other than establishing a type that prefigured the Theotokos. And it remained there. “Aaron placed it before the Testimony, in the Tabernacle of Testimony, to be preserved, as the Lord had commanded Moses. And the children of Israel ate manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land,” where they could finally settle and no longer had to keep journeying. They ate the manna
until they reached the borders of the land of Canaan. “Now an omer is one-tenth of an ephah,” it says, explaining the measure. But I told you earlier that it is about three kilograms. Now the account continues. And the Lord said to Moses: “Pass before the people”—go ahead of the people, He tells him—“and take with you some of the elders of Israel, along with your rod, with which you struck the river. Take it in your hand and go. Behold, I shall stand there before you upon the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock.”
“Water shall come out of it,” so that the people—three million souls—might drink. The rock was Christ, and the wood with which Moses struck the rock was the Precious Cross, which would pierce Christ and cause the waters of incorruption to flow forth and give drink to humanity. The Apostle Paul says this as well; if you read chapter ten of First Corinthians, you will find it there.
“Is the Lord among us or not?” Because they had run out of water, they put the Most High to the test, as the saying goes. “Is there a God?” they asked. “If there is, we are thirsty and perishing.” In any case, God gave them water again without saying anything. He did the lesser thing and gave them water. Then they continued on their way, three million people—a vast swarm. And when all the surrounding peoples saw that the sea had cast out this great swarm of people, without knowing how—for the crossing had taken place at night—they wondered how they had suddenly appeared there without ships or landing craft. It seemed very strange to them.
All the other peoples were now afraid of this nation. They thought the Israelites were coming as conquerors, although they were really only passing through, like migratory birds. The territory through which they now had to pass belonged to the people called the Amalekites, descendants of Amalek. They were a harsh people, and they made war on the Israelites and refused to let them pass.
So along their journey the Israelites were forced to fight battles as well. But how could they fight? First of all, they were untrained. They had been captives all those years; they were inexperienced and unaccustomed to hardship. They had neither weapons nor the equipment they needed. Their enemies were in their own homeland, were armed, and possessed at least some knowledge of the primitive methods of warfare, while the Israelites had none.
It says that Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim, a place in that region. And Moses said to Joshua, his assistant: “Choose men for us, go out, and fight against Amalek.” Choose some of our men and go out to battle—this is what Moses told Joshua. “Tomorrow I shall stand on the summit of the mountain, holding the rod of God in my hand.” This took place at Sinai. I do not know how many of you have been there, but Sinai has three peaks: a lower one, a middle one, and a very high one. The highest, about eight thousand feet, is the peak of Saint Catherine, where the angels carried her.
The middle peak is where the Prophet Elijah saw God and spoke with Him. The third peak is where Moses ascended, holding the wood—his rod, of course—with his arms outstretched as he prayed. And what happened? As long as Moses kept his arms outstretched in prayer, his forces below in the ravines defeated the Amalekites. But whenever he grew tired and lowered his arms, the Amalekites drove them back again in ranks. There were three men up there: Moses and his brother Aaron,
and Hur—spelled with an omega—his brother-in-law, the husband of Miriam’s sister. The three of them were up there. They saw that the Israelites prevailed only when Moses held his arms outstretched. So what did they do? They seated him on a stone at the summit of the mountain. One stood on one side and the other on the opposite side, holding his arms outstretched while he sat, because the man could no longer keep them raised himself. In this way, by evening, the armies of Israel had prevailed and passed through that difficult place. What did this posture symbolize? Christ.
A man standing with his arms open and outstretched is an image of the Crucified One; the human figure itself forms a cross. I do not know whether you have noticed this, and this is not the only time it appears. There on the mountain, then, Moses prefigured our Christ. What did Christ say, and what is written above Christ’s head? Are not an Alpha and an Omega written there? Did He not say, “I am the Alpha and the Omega”? Omega. And who stood beside Moses? Were they not Aaron and Hur? Alpha for Aaron, and Hur with an omega: Alpha and Omega. This image appeared fifteen hundred years before Christ. And yet the Jehovah’s Witnesses tell you that the Cross is merely an instrument of execution. What are you saying? If you open the Scriptures from the first page of Exodus to the end of the Bible, you will find nothing else: you will find Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Cross—yet they say no.
So how does the text put it here? “I shall stand,” he says, “on the summit of the mountain, holding the rod of God in my hand.” And Joshua did as Moses had told him. He took soldiers, went out, and engaged the Amalekites in battle to open a passage through which the people could pass. He fought against Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur ascended to the summit of the mountain. Whenever Moses raised his hand, Israel prevailed; but whenever he lowered his hands, Amalek prevailed. And Moses’ hands became heavy. He grew tired and could no longer keep them raised. So they took a stone and placed it beneath him.
He sat upon it. They placed a stone there and seated him on it. Then Aaron and Hur, one on each side, supported his hands, and his hands remained steady until sunset. And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. The Cross... Amalek is a type of Satan. The Cross and the Crucified One will defeat Satan. This is what is taking place there. Let me return to my point. If a person, a so-called Christian, were willing to take up the Old Testament and read it...
You see, already brought forth within the Old Testament, the things that took place afterward—prophesied and prefigured. There you see, as though carved in relief, the image of the Cross and the victory over Satan. For remember what God said to Satan: that He would crush your head, while you would strike His heel. The striking of the heel was Satan’s nailing of our Christ to the Cross, according to His human nature.
On the Cross he did nothing to Him; he did not take His life.
Christ came, as it says, like a lamb silent before its shearer—Isaiah writes this. When a lamb is taken to be shorn, does it speak? No. It remains still; they shear it, keep its wool, and send it away. Then it goes on to the river to be washed and made white. I do not know whether you have seen how sheep are shorn. In taking its wool, they do not take its life. So it was with Christ. He was nailed to the Cross as a man; they took His body and laid it in the tomb, but they did not take His life. These things are set forth as clearly as a carving in relief. You cannot deny the divinity of Jesus or His existence.
This is history written beforehand—and written, moreover, by His enemies. We did not receive it from Greeks or from philosophers of our own, but from those very Jews. And when truths are attested by enemies, they are doubly true. In any case, we shall continue shortly. And the Lord spoke to Moses after these events had taken place, with Moses standing in this posture of the Cross...
This miracle took place.
What did He do for him? Why, then, was Joshua below? Was he afterward to come and receive congratulations for his victory? No. Moses was to tell him what had happened, so that Joshua would know that he himself had not won. The victory belonged to the one above, whose arms were outstretched. “And declare it,” He says, “in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek.” I shall remove the devil from beneath heaven, He says, because Amalek is a type—a type of Satan, as Saint Gregory the Theologian says. Then Moses built an altar there and called its name Jehovah-Nissi, which means, “The Lord is my banner.” The Lord is my strength, my banner. It remains there to this day, on top of that little mountain.
This scene took place there. Today there is, what shall we call it, a little chapel on that spot, just as there is one at the place where Moses received the tablets, on the middle peak, beside the chapel of the Prophet Elijah.
It says that Moses built an altar there and called its name Jehovah-Nissi, and he said: “Because a hand has been raised against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will wage war against Amalek.” In other words, it is an eternal war, like the war between Satan and Christ, from generation to generation, until the end. The text now mentions other events concerning Jethro. I do not know whether you know who he was: Moses’ father-in-law, from Midian—the land of Midian.
In any case, let me read this to you: “Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took...”
Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, whom Moses had sent back, and her two sons. One of them was named Gershom, because Moses had said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land”; he had been born away from home, and so forth. The other was named Eliezer, because Moses had said, “The God of my father was my helper and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.” Their names, then, had symbolic meaning. And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came to Moses together with Moses’ sons. In other words, while Moses was leading the people there, he had left his wife with her father, his father-in-law, who was a priest. That is how Jethro is described. These are the events being related.
If you remember, after Moses had committed the killing and fled, he went there and helped them water the sheep and, in general, tend the priest’s livestock. Later, the priest gave him one of his daughters as his wife. Jethro came “with his sons and his wife into the wilderness, where Moses was encamped, at the mountain of God”—that is, at Sinai—“and he sent word to Moses: ‘I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you, together with your wife and her two sons.’” Now, whether he sent this in writing, I do not know; in any event, he notified Moses through someone. Obviously they did not have our modern means of communication then. He must have sent a messenger. “And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed before him.” He did not insult him; he bowed before him. Let sons-in-law take note!
Of course, the same applies to daughters-in-law in their conduct toward their mothers-in-law—though mothers-in-law certainly do not have dictatorial rights over their daughters-in-law. You know, mothers-in-law often complain that their daughters-in-law do not respect them. But do they themselves show respect to their own daughters-in-law? And how do they view the daughter-in-law when she enters the home? As someone taking away their authority! The mother-in-law will no longer be in charge.
That is where the hostility begins. It does not necessarily begin because the daughter-in-law is wicked. She may be; I am not saying otherwise. I am not defending anyone unconditionally. She may indeed be at fault. But out of a hundred cases, ninety are created by the mother-in-law’s attitude. Unfortunately, the mother-in-law sees that she is losing ground. The daughter-in-law assumes responsibility, the mother-in-law is no longer in charge, the keys pass from her hands, people ask for someone else, callers on the telephone ask for someone else, and so forth. That is where the whole matter begins.
This is not the time to speak to you about that, even though today is the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord, and many mothers take the occasion to celebrate it as a mothers’ feast, though they should not. They have no tact at all in such matters. In any case, we will speak about this another time, if God permits. “And Moses bowed before him,” it says, “and kissed him”—Moses kissed his father-in-law—“and they asked each other about their well-being,” with warmth and familiarity, “and they entered the tent.” Moses brought his father-in-law inside. “And Moses related to his father-in-law everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the hardships that had befallen them along the way.”
“And the Lord delivered them.” It was the Lord who did it. Suppose we go abroad and return with a little money. We should not say, “Do you know what I accomplished? I stayed up all night working here and there.” Instead, we should say, “God helped me to do it. He gave me health, work, and people who supported me. Their reputation opened doors for me. God opened the way and provided the right circumstances.” And so I did what I did and returned. Glory be to His name. But that is not how we speak. Whether we went to Albania and returned, or went to some other foreign country and came back, we attribute everything to our own prowess. We may have come close to death a hundred times before returning, yet we do not say, “Glory to God that we came back. The Most Holy Theotokos saved us; our Saint saved us; the Lord saved us.” We credit everything to ourselves: “I worked; I accomplished it.” And what of those who did not succeed because they became ill or suffered some other misfortune?
People found themselves in some difficult situation and lost their money, the fruit of their sweat. They fell into the hands of a scoundrel, a fraudulent associate, a wicked wife, or a wicked husband. Is it merely chance that you managed to stay afloat? Give the credit to God, then, and do not give it to yourself. These are not your own achievements. The Old Testament is deeply instructive, but it must be studied inch by inch. It is not enough simply to read it in passing; it requires study. Do not hurry on. Stop here and ask: What does it say? Why does it say it? What does it teach? A person can be greatly benefited by it. So Moses related to his father-in-law in full detail everything the Lord had done for him: how He drowned Pharaoh, how He performed all these wonders, how He brought the people out, what He told them to do—everything.
The Lord did it all. By themselves they could do nothing. “And Jethro rejoiced exceedingly”—not merely rejoiced, but rejoiced exceedingly—“over all the good things the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered from the hand of the Egyptians.” The Lord delivers us from the hands of Satan. Unless He helps us, our own strength and achievements are not sufficient. “And Jethro said: ‘Blessed be the Lord, who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, who delivered the people from beneath the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods, because...’”
In the very matter in which they had acted proudly, He proved Himself greater than they. Those who were full of egotism and pride received a sound blow, as we say. Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought burnt offerings and sacrifices to offer to God. He celebrated what we might today call a liturgy. Many people have this devotion and offer a sacrifice to God. Yet the greatest sacrifice, the offering most moving to God, is the Divine Liturgy, in which the Son is sacrificed. We treat it as something secondary. Often, although we have vowed to arrange a Divine Liturgy, when the time comes to do so, perhaps because it will cost a little more money and so forth, we may even abuse some priest for asking too much, and then we do not have it celebrated at all.
Instead, we simply attend another Divine Liturgy. It is good to arrange for one on a day when the Divine Liturgy would not otherwise be celebrated, so that one more Divine Liturgy is offered. This does not mean that you cannot attend on Saturday or Sunday, when the Divine Liturgy is already celebrated. But when you say, “Saint Nektarios of Aegina, I will come and have a Divine Liturgy celebrated in your honor,” it is better not to go on a Sunday or Saturday, when one is already being served, but on a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. “But you see, we have to work.” Then call in sick that day—call in sick and go! But where is such devotion to be found? When things become desperate, we cry, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” Once the trouble has passed and life opens up again, we cast the Most Holy Theotokos aside. How, then, are we honoring her?
Let us stop here, and, God willing, we shall continue, because, as you understand, our time has run out.

Ο ουρανός. Και όταν αργεί ο ουρανός, που δεν έχει ανάγκη, η γη γιατί δεν πρέπει να αργήσει, που έχει ανάγκη ανασυγκροτήσεως; Έτσι δεν είναι; Τα ζώα ακόμη κι αυτά έχουν την ανάγκη της αναπαύσεως, για να μπορέσουν να εργαστούν το υπόλοιπο, και ο άνθρωπος έχει την ανάγκη να ξεκουραστεί, να πλυθεί, να γίνει μια εκτόνωση του οργανισμού από τη μονότονη αυτή δουλειά. Γιατί, βλέπετε, φεύγουμε από εδώ, δεν είναι και οτιδήποτε, και ας φτιάξει ο άνθρωπος, θα τα αφήσει εδώ. Δεν ξέρω αν έχετε προσέξει που σας έλεγα μια άλλη μέρα: στα σάβανα δεν έχουν τσέπες. Γιατί δεν βάλουν δυο τσεπούλες να βάλουν το μυξομάντιλο; Γιατί δεν βάζουν; Έτσι μου λέει ένας φιλόσοφος χθες: «Δεν έχουν», λέει, «τσέπες στα σάβανα». Και είναι αλήθεια, είναι φιλοσοφία αυτή. Δηλαδή δεν μπορείς να πάρεις τίποτα μαζί σου. Απλώς διαχειριστής είσαι εδώ πέρα, αλλά θα μείνουν σύγκρυτα και τα τούβλα και τα λιθάρια και τα ηλεκτρικά και τι είναι αυτά;
Ευχαριστώ. Κατεξοχήν εδώ, στις μεγαλουπόλεις, εκκλησίες που λειτουργούν καθημερινώς. Φερ' ειπείν εδώ παραπλεύρως, Ανάληψη, στο Μετόχι, στο Παγκράτι. Έχει κάθε μέρα, πλην δύο μέρες που δεν επιτρέπεται η Θεία Λειτουργία τον χρόνο. Δεν έχει λειτουργία· όλες τις άλλες ημέρες έχει λειτουργία. Δεν μπορεί ο άνθρωπος να δικαιολογηθεί και να πει: «Όχι, θα σε πιστώσω εγώ, δεν θα έρθεις σήμερα στην Εκκλησία. Θα έρθεις αύριο που θα έχεις το ρεπό σου όμως». Αλλά εμείς, και Εκκλησία όχι, και ρεπό δικό μας. Αυτοί είμαστε εμείς. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, ο Θεός μας ανέχεται, αλλά εμείς μέχρι πότε;
νες!
Συμμετέχουμε σε μια άλλη λειτουργία. Καλά είναι να κάνεις μια μέρα που δεν γίνεται λειτουργία, να προστεθεί ακόμη μία λειτουργία. Όχι ότι δεν μπορείς να συμμετάσχεις το Σάββατο, την Κυριακή που γίνεται λειτουργία. Αλλά όταν λες «να έρθω να κάνω μια λειτουργία, Άγιε Νεκτάριε, στη χάρη σου», καλά είναι να μην πας Κυριακή που γίνεται λειτουργία ή Σάββατο, μα να πας μια Δευτέρα, μια Τρίτη, μια Πέμπτη. «Μα, βλέπεις, εργαζόμεθα». Να αρρωστήσεις την ημέρα εκείνη, να αρρωστήσεις και να πας. Αλλά πού; Όταν είναι στριμωμένα τα πράγματα, «Παναγία, βοήθεια». Όταν φύγουν τα πράγματα, απλώσουν, έξω η Παναγία. Τι με θα αυτιμήσω;
