Summary
Israel’s escape from Pharaoh is presented as a spiritual pattern for liberation from sin and entry into the Promised Land. Humanity’s limited understanding of perception, consciousness, and the body shows why divine mysteries must be approached through humble faith rather than intellectual pride. Pharaoh’s hardened pursuit ends with the destruction of his army, demonstrating that God protects His people and overcomes those who defiantly oppose Him.

We were together in our last talk, as in the others. You will remember that we are speaking from the Book of Exodus.
We are discussing matters that concern us very deeply, because the Exodus is a type—a spiritual pattern. The whole life of the Hebrews, and of course the help given through Moses, shows us how we too may escape from the spiritual Pharaoh and pass into the Promised Land. Do not forget: as you will remember, and as I see here from my notes, we are in chapter 14 of Exodus.
More specifically, the Hebrews had now departed at God’s command and gone forward. They came to the Red Sea and camped there, because they could go no farther. The Egyptians caught up with them, drawing near with chariots, an army, and so forth. But God placed a cloud between the two camps. It covered the rear of the Israelite camp and made it difficult for the Egyptians to see exactly where they were. At a certain point, however, the Israelites saw that behind them, only a short distance away...
were the Egyptians. You can understand what a difficult position they were in: the Israelites were unarmed, untrained in warfare, men who had never gone out to battle, while the others had chariots and weapons of war. When Moses learned of it and saw at the same time how close they were, he resorted to the one means available to him: prayer. He did not pray openly; inwardly, within himself, he prayed to God, asking what he should do. God had told him to leave, but Moses had not left on his own. God had placed...
millions of people upon his shoulders. What was he to do now? This is where we stopped in our last talk, as I see here from my notes. That was the seventh talk in this series, and tonight’s is the eighth. “And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why do you cry out to Me?’” Although Moses was not speaking aloud, he was praying inwardly, within himself. Yet God says to him, “You are crying out to Me. What do you want? What is troubling you? Speak to the children of Israel, and let them set out.” In other words, tell the people with you to make ready—to prepare to depart.
But where will they go? The Egyptians are behind them and the sea is before them. Where can they go? That is human reasoning. What is one plus one? Two. If someone tells you it is three, you will say either that he is mad or that he has never learned his letters.
Nevertheless, you should know that for man one plus one makes two. As many people say, there is a precipice ahead and a torrent behind. But for Christ, one plus one does not make two. One plus one can make three, or five, or a thousand—whatever He wills. It is only man who says, “There was no other way.” There can be another way. With God, one plus one is not confined to two.
I say this because many things drive us to despair. Many times we side with sin—that is, with the devil—because we think there could have been no other way. Did you entrust your situation to God, to see whether another way might be possible? Or did you surrender because you were afraid there was no other way? Exactly. Once they brought to Christ a woman who had been caught in the very act of adultery. They brought her deliberately, in order to trap Christ. The Mosaic Law was clear: when a woman was caught committing adultery, she was to be stoned. So after publicly shaming her, they took her and brought her to Christ, saying...
“This woman was caught in the very act of adultery. The Law says that she must be stoned. What do You say?” My own answer would have been, “Since the Law says she must be stoned, am I to oppose Moses? And why have you spent all this time bringing her here instead of carrying out the sentence?” But they had another reason for bringing her. If He says yes, then where is the forgiveness He teaches? If He says no, then He is opposing the Mosaic Law, and we have caught Him. The Evangelist tells us that the Lord had bent down and was writing in the dust with His finger. Then He turned to them and said, “Hypocrites, why do you test Me?”
Then He continued: “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” He did not say yes or no. He did not say, “Stone her,” or, “Do not stone her.” He said no such thing. “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” Convicted by their own consciences, the Gospel says—for they themselves deserved to have been stoned for other things—they began to drop the stones they had brought with them and went away, beginning with the elders. They had brought the stones in case they were to stone her. They had not expected that answer. They thought He would have to answer one way or the other. But He sees them for what they are and exposes them. Here is another case. They put this question to Him: “Is it lawful for us to pay...”},{
tribute to Caesar, yes or no? Tell us yes or no—no further discussion.” Again came the answer: “Hypocrites, why do you test Me?” They were not truly concerned about whether they should pay the tax. Their purpose was to force Him to say yes or no. If He said, “Yes, you must pay,” then He was on the Romans’ side and was an enemy of the Jewish nation. If He said, “No, do not pay,” then He was opposing Caesar, and they would denounce Him. Either way, they thought they had caught Him. The Lord answered, “Bring Me a denarius—a coin. Bring it to Me.” They brought Him a coin, something like what we might call a large silver coin today. Coins bear the portraits of certain people.
They may bear portraits of kings and others, just as our coins do today and as coins have done in every age. Since the land was under occupation, the coins circulating there bore the portrait of Caesar. He asked, “Whose image is this?” They answered, “Caesar’s.” Then He said, “Turn the coin over.” They turned it over. “And what is this?” He asked. “The Temple of Solomon.” “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” What an answer! With God, one plus one is not confined to two. Never despair. Never say that everything has closed in upon you, that the matter has ended badly, that all is lost, and so forth.
Have you entrusted it to God? Entrust your situation to Him, and God will bring forth a way out of nothing and set matters in order as far as it is truly for your good. For often God does not agree with what we consider to be in our interest, or with the demands of our ego. God has ways of helping us, even if we suffer some loss in other things. Yes, please. Very good. And so Moses found himself with the sea before him and Pharaoh behind him. What happens now? We are lost! But God says, “Why do you cry out? Tell them to make ready.” And what good will that do? “But you, lift up your staff, stretch out your hand over the Red Sea, and divide it.” I...
will do it—not you. I will do it through you. It is the sea, yes, but it will divide. The sea will open and become a road. I will it—I who shelter and protect you. I will stand behind you in the cloud so that they cannot see you. “And let the children of Israel pass through the midst of the sea on dry ground.” The sea will become dry land—something impossible according to human understanding. But all these things were supernatural, just as they remain beyond the natural understanding of the human mind. Yet most of us reject that miracle by appealing to our reason and our science.
Have we ever explained how we ourselves exist? Have we solved the mysteries that surround us, so that we can now demand to know how the sea was divided? An east wind—a north wind—blew and dried the seabed, so that all those people, three million or however many they were, crossed without even getting muddy. This is what the hymn means by “with feet unwetted”: their feet did not get wet as they crossed. The water became like a wall of glass. It stopped and stood like a wall, and the people passed through its midst. These are strange things...
unbelievable to many. “How could that possibly happen?” But how is it possible for you to hear me speaking to you now? How do you hear? Gather together, if you like, every professor and every ear, nose, and throat specialist in the world, from every age. How does it happen? They do not know how a human being hears. They can tell you what takes place. They observe the vibrations and so forth. But they do not know how it happens. How do we see? How do we distinguish black, white, red, and yellow? How? All the ophthalmologists in the world cannot answer. They observe and describe, but they do not explain. How does it happen?
The same was true of our Most Holy Theotokos. You remember what she said to the Angel: “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” How shall I conceive? How shall I give birth, as you say? I have no husband. The man to whom I have been entrusted is my protector. Is he my husband? I am a girl of thirteen or fourteen, and I am to take an eighty-year-old man—is he my husband? “How shall this be?” The Angel did not know how to tell her the manner in which it would happen. He answered by telling her what would happen. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” How the Holy Spirit will accomplish this, I do not know. But I can tell you what will happen. That is why I was sent: to tell you that this will happen. I was not sent to tell you how it will happen. I do not know how to explain it, and even if I did, you would not be able to understand.
Man does not possess the capacity to understand the mysteries that surround him; he is called to believe them. God places in his hand a white cane, as we do for the blind—for we too are blind in these matters. Written upon that cane are the words “faith” and “prayer,” so that we may go forward through faith and not through knowledge. If a man demands proof at every step, endlessly asking why and how, he cannot take even a single step. Yet although he lives by faith in every other area of life, when it comes to religion and to God, he demands proof.
Satan does not let him believe there. He believes everything else. When he went to school, the teacher told him, “This is called alpha.” Did he ask, “Why is it called alpha, teacher?” The teacher does not know how to answer. He does not know why it is called alpha. The child simply accepted that it was called alpha and repeated it. I accept it too. Then the teacher says, “This one is called beta.” “Why is it called beta?” The teacher does not know how to answer. Who can explain why it is called beta? Nor can he explain why these two letters together produce one sound in one combination and another sound in another. If a person demanded proof before accepting the letters and moving forward, he would never have advanced beyond the first year of primary school. He would still be there today. Yet he accepts that this is so, and he moves forward. And through faith...
that alpha is called alpha, delta is called delta, and that two letters together make this sound or that one, he advances without examining everything. He accepts all of it. The same is true of what he learns about electricity, plumbing, and everything else. He believes it all. But when he comes to Christ, he suddenly asks, “Why? How?” My dear man, first explain all those other things, and then presume to explain this.
Have you explained the mystery of mysteries? You have not, and you never will. I am speaking now—but how do you hear me, and where do you store what you hear? The clever people say, “Man is like a magnetic tape: one tape speaks, and the other records.” Really? Man is no more a magnetic tape than anything else. You are listening now as I speak about religion. My own tape, so to speak, is unwinding—yet for that to happen, I should have recorded it beforehand. But I have recorded nothing.
As though I knew what I was going to say when I came here! All these things come by themselves, one after another, and now you hear them. Your own tape, then, ought to record exactly what I am saying. Shall we say that it does? Very well, it records it. But when you go outside and someone asks, “What was Panagopoulos saying in there?” will you be able to repeat exactly what I said? Perhaps you will. But you could also say something quite different. You might say, “You know, at one point he insulted the President of the Republic—but let that remain between us.” Could you not say that? Of course you could. Could you not say that I insulted His Beatitude? You could. Who is it, then, who cuts the tape, splices another tape into you, and makes you say something else?
You may witness a murder and say, “I saw nothing,” because the murderer is someone dear to you and you want to help him get away. Or you may say the opposite: “It was not he who struck him; it was that other man.” Who is it that changes things within you? A magnetic tape, like the ones recording here now, will say the same thing even if it is played a million times. So there is an editor within you who adds and removes, splices and cuts. Who is this editor? Have you ever explained him? Are you a mystery or are you not? Am I a mystery or am I not? And yet this ridiculous human being, who knows nothing about such matters—for what he knows is nothing compared with what he does not know—continues in his pride to reject them and demand proof, when he cannot prove even the things of his own life.
Is a human being merely a receiver fashioned by his mother? How were his bones made? Tell me, who assembled him? Irrational nature? Really? Does nature create life? Where there is no life, can life simply arise? Who made his intestines? Who opened their passages and joined them together? Who put blood inside him? Who fashioned his heart and set it working? Who made all these things?
Who shaped his teeth so that the poor man could thresh and grind his food? Who gave him canine teeth, and who gave him molars? Who made the socket for the tooth to fit into—the socket that in Greek is called an alveolus, from the word for a manger? Sometimes a dentist’s carelessness damages it. And who gave him that piece of flesh called the tongue, which is the greatest chemical laboratory in the world?
Take ten bottles containing different substances to a chemist and ask, “Can you please tell me what is in each one?” He will say, “Come back in a week or ten days for the answer.” Yet you recognize sweet, sour, bitter, astringent, and salty at once. Who is it within you that does this? Have you ever asked what you are, O man? Have you solved the mystery of your own being? And yet, in his pride, man wants an explanation and proof. Some say, “Unless I see, I will not believe.” But if you see, it is no longer faith; it is knowledge. Woe to you if you see and still do not believe—for then medicine has a psychiatric hospital for you. Christ does not reward mere knowledge, because knowledge...
...feeds human pride: “I understood this myself.” No—what is needed is faith. Faith casts pride aside. So never be scandalized and ask, “Where is the proof of these things?” The arguments I have offered you are almost nothing. I could speak for a month until my mouth went dry. Man has solved nothing of the mystery surrounding him. He is himself a mystery, yet he goes searching into mysteries. Man soars into the clouds and refuses to come down to earth. He has reached the moon, yet he does not know what is happening within the few inches of his own chest, inside his heart. Does he understand this place where the publican struck his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner”? But pride will not let him see. Cut the flesh here, and blood comes out. Cut the nail, and no blood comes out. Why does the nail not bleed? Who makes the nail grow? Why is there no nail here? How does all this happen?
How does it happen? Who hollows out your hairs? Your hairs are like macaroni, hollow inside. Who makes them hollow? Tell me. Wherever else you are cut, you cry out in pain, yet it does not hurt when your hair is cut. Who is the master craftsman who formed you? Who planted the hair, and how does it work? What am I even to ask? In the end you will say, “My God, where should I begin? What do I even know enough to ask?” How does a mother drink a glass of wine and turn it into milk for her child? How does she eat greens or cauliflower and turn them into milk for her child? How, when a woman conceives, do her breasts begin preparing milk for the cherished child who will be born, in the amount suited to the child’s age and strength? What is this human being? He reflects on such things, and yet he still insists on learning how everything happens.
You cannot understand it. As I said, you do not possess the capacity to understand it. You have been given enough, if you desire to believe and to live so as to draw near to God. In any case, God tells Moses, “Strike the sea; open it. Raise your staff and mark out a path through the sea. Then enter and pass through.” The staff! Who would believe such a thing? He struck with the staff, and the sea opened. Our Church speaks of this in the katavasias for the Cross—you will remember the words: “Moses, tracing the Cross, divided the Red Sea straightway with his staff.” As God commanded, he raised his staff and marked the sea, and as far as he extended it, the sea opened.
Because people do not understand these things, they make light of what is said about how the Cross was traced. Here Moses struck the sea, and the sea parted, forming a road, a passage. But afterward, when Pharaoh continued pursuing them and entered the sea himself, God told Moses, “Strike it again, so that it may come together.” The first time, he struck in one direction and it opened. The second time, God said, “Strike across it, so that it may close.” Since one stroke opened it and the other closed it, behold the Cross. The Church has made no mistake. It is we who, because of our pride, refuse to see.
Some give other explanations, saying that there was an ebb tide and a flood tide—as though the Israelites even knew when the tide would ebb and flow there. Besides, the change in the water level was sometimes only a handbreadth, though at other times more. The Israelites did not even know of it. Moreover, when they entered, the water still rose above their heads. How deep was it? It was above their heads. If there had been only a handbreadth of water, as some who wish to deny Holy Scripture claim, not one of Pharaoh’s chariots would have been destroyed. All those people could have survived, especially standing on chariots five or six feet high. They would not have perished. Yet not one remained. Everyone who entered the sea was lost. Therefore, the water was very deep.
In any case, the Cross itself was traced upon the water. The hymn says: “Moses, tracing the Cross, divided the Red Sea straightway with his staff, and Israel passed through on foot; then, striking it crosswise in return, he joined it together over Pharaoh and his chariots.” It is as though he struck it, and the divided sea rushed back and became one again. “Thus he inscribed in the waters the invincible weapon”—in this way, the hymn says, he depicted the invincible weapon of the Cross. It is indeed an invincible weapon. “Therefore, let us sing to Christ our God, for He has been glorified.” The words “for He has been glorified” are taken from a prayer, from a song...
...which the Israelites sang after they had crossed over and saw that they were safe on one shore, while their enemies had drowned on the other. They had been delivered completely from the enemies who had oppressed them for four hundred years and had pursued them even into the sea. In any case, God drowned Pharaoh and his entire army, with his two-wheeled war chariots and his cavalry: “You will be saved, while they will drown.” Thus all the Egyptians would learn that He is the Lord.
He is the God who is glorified through Pharaoh, his entire army, and his cavalry. After this, the angel of God, who had been going before the camp of the Israelites, moved from before them and went behind them. He first opened the way for them, and then moved to their rear. The cloud that had stood before them in the form of a pillar also moved and stood behind them. Besides the guide who led them, there was also a cloud, as I told you earlier, which sheltered them from the sun by day and gave them light by night. This cloud came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of the Israelites and stood there upright, so the Egyptians could not harm the Israelites. There was darkness because of the thick cloud. “There was darkness and gloom, and the night passed, and they did not come near one another throughout the whole night.” God guarded them all night with that dense darkness. He gave light ahead to His own people, while the others were in darkness and could not move. Thus the Israelites were able to travel safely and cross the sea during the night. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and “the Lord drove the sea back with a strong south wind all night.” A mighty wind blew, “and He made the sea dry, and the water was divided.”
The sea itself was divided. The wind blew and dried the mud and sediment on the seabed so that they could cross. “And the children of Israel entered into the midst of the sea on dry ground, and the water was a wall to them on their right and a wall on their left.” But the Egyptians pursued them and entered the sea behind them. You know, a human being sometimes loses all reason. Pharaoh had already endured ten plagues. You remember what we discussed earlier—what had not happened to him? Frogs, rivers turned to blood, gnats, thick darkness, the death of the firstborn. The hand of God had been revealed again and again.
His final act of madness was this: he saw the sea—he knew the Red Sea well—and he saw the water standing like a great pillar, yet he entered it. He actually dared to go in. Where are you going, you man who fights against God? How dare you enter here? This is now the trap in which you will be punished. The blood of the firstborn who died because of him, the blood of the little children and all the rest, was pursuing him, as we say, to destroy him utterly. I confess that, no matter what quarry I had lost—for Pharaoh regarded the Israelites as quarry—
...some six hundred thousand laborers, I would not have acted as he did. Consider what it meant economically for a state, especially ancient Egypt, to have six hundred thousand people working without wages. In any case, Pharaoh hardened himself, disregarded everything, set himself against God, and entered the sea. He entered without considering the trap or its consequences, as we would say. He had no business going in there.
Away from God, man loses his reason. “The Egyptians pursued and went in after them, every horse of Pharaoh, his chariots, and his riders, into the midst of the sea.” They advanced to overtake them. “And it came to pass during the morning watch”—that is, until around four in the morning, during the last watch, which ran from about two until six—that God cast an angry look through the pillar of fire and the cloud upon the army of the Egyptians and threw their army into confusion. It was like an earthquake. And do you know what effect this shaking had?
The wheels and axles of their cavalry vehicles and chariots broke apart, and they could move neither backward nor forward.
“He bound the axles of their chariots and drove them forward with difficulty.” Then the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from before Israel, for the Lord is fighting for them against the Egyptians.” Let us turn back and flee from them, they said, because God Himself is fighting against us. It is not they who are fighting us; it is God Himself. But now there was no time left. They were inside the cage, caught in the trap. “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the water return.’” Of course, He did not mean over the road that had opened. Where was the sea? On this side and on that. Stretch out your hand, then, so that the divided sea may come together again, “and let it cover the Egyptians”—and what else does He say?—“both their chariots and their riders,” the chariots and the men upon them.
So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, “and toward daybreak the water returned to its place. And the Egyptians fled beneath the water”—they were swept away; the water carried them before it. For while it had stood there like a wall of water, all through the night—and perhaps from the previous day, I do not know—the sea had been gathering behind it. So it rushed forward with force, “and the Lord cast the Egyptians into the midst of the sea.” In plain words: Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and in the morning the water returned to its place. The Egyptians tried to flee from the water, but the Lord swept them away in the oncoming waters and scattered them throughout the sea. That is what happened!
When the water returned to its place, it covered the two-wheeled war chariots, the men riding in them, and indeed the whole army of Pharaoh, who had entered the sea in pursuit of the Israelites. “Not one of them remained.” Not one escaped. They all perished there. Our Church has a beautiful troparion—I believe it is a doxastikon in the Second Tone, sung at a Vespers—which says: “In the Red Sea, an image of the Bride who knew no man was once prefigured.” There, in the Red Sea, a type was revealed that points to the perpetual virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). It says, “of the Bride who knew no man,” because many ask, “How did the Most Holy Theotokos give birth and yet remain undefiled?” Here is the mystery, and here is its type. In the evening you see the sea whole, untouched, and virginal, with three million people on this side. In the morning you see the sea once again whole, intact, and virginal, with three million people on the other side. How did they cross? And yet they did cross. Miraculously, the water opened through the ministry of Moses, and they passed through. Then it closed again and remained undefiled. There, the hymn says, “Moses was the divider of the water.”
Gabriel was the minister of the miracle. There Israel passed through, and the sea remained untrodden; here Emmanuel passed through, and the Virgin remained undefiled. Who believes these things? Only when we go up above will we see how true are the things that have been handed down to us here below. In any case, this was a type of our Most Holy Theotokos. But it was also a type of something else: Baptism. Pharaoh, as a figure of Satan, together with all his little descendants—his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, every last one of them—were all washed away in the water. The help given by the cloud and the sea, and their prefiguration of Baptism, are described by Paul in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, in the tenth chapter.
There was a type there in ancient times. “Our fathers,” he says, “were all under the cloud. And all passed through the sea. And all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.” It was a type. In the same way, in Baptism we drown Satan, whom we bear within our souls because of ancestral sin, for every human being is conceived in sin. The seed is sinful because it comes from Adam. Even if the holiest man comes together with his wife, what they beget is sinful and destined for Hell.
If you examine our very nature, it tells you the same thing. If, for example, you take the pit from a fine olive and plant it, that pit, that seed, will produce a wild olive tree. If you take the seed of a good orange and plant it, it will produce a bitter orange tree and will need to be grafted again. It is exactly the same with the seed of man. That is why David says, “Behold, I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” That is also why the homespun theology of grandmothers and grandfathers calls a little boy a dragon and a little girl a little dragon. But today’s newly enlightened mothers, who know nothing at all about the faith, call them little angels.
They are no more little angels than they are little devils, and they need to be baptized. As long as you do not baptize the child, you are keeping Satan within the child’s little heart. The child has Satan within. If you were to draw near and listen to the prayers of the Church, which command that Satan depart from the child’s soul, you would be astonished—or simply take and read the service of Baptism. But which of us has ever paid attention or truly participated in the service of Baptism? Everyone is busy joking and chatting. They look to see whether the godmother is beautiful or what gifts she will give. They look at one another and talk; one stands with his hands behind his back, another plays with his worry beads, and so forth. They do not understand what the priest is breathing upon in the child’s heart, or that he is exorcising the devil and commanding him to depart. He blesses the water and exorcises it, so that the devil may depart from it. He blesses the oil, so that the devil may depart from it.
Then, because the child is as one dead, he baptizes him, for the baptismal font is the tomb of Christ. He baptizes him, and after the pattern of the third day he rises again, as Christ did. From that moment he is something new. He is baptized in water and the Spirit, while Pharaoh, the chief devil, together with all the other little demons, is drowned in Baptism. What happened there at the Red Sea—the passage we are reading here this evening—was a type of this. Everything held by the Orthodox Church has its type in the Old Testament. God was preparing us; He was setting these things forth from that time onward, so that when they came, we might receive them gladly. Therefore, what happened there also happens in our Baptism today. There Pharaoh was crushed together with all his forces; here the spiritual Pharaoh, Satan, is crushed.
All that belongs to Satan is crushed, and the person comes forth from the font made new. From then on, he must glorify God, because he has left Egypt, the land where he was enslaved beneath Satan, and now he is free. The person is free. Once, while traveling to Patras, I was discussing this matter with a university student. He said to me, “This is exactly where your falsehood lies.” I asked, “Why?” He replied, “Because you say that you are servants of Christ. Can I believe in a religion and in a leader who wants servants? The whole world is seeking freedom.” I said, “Let me help you, if you are willing to believe and understand.”
It is true that we call ourselves servants of Christ—but what kind of servants? Earlier, I heard you talking with your friend about some filthy deeds, so you are already a servant. You are a servant of the flesh. You are a fornicator and an adulterer, judging by what I heard you saying about a married woman. You are a servant. I am a servant of Christ; you are a servant of Satan. You are enslaved; you are not free. If you think that sinning without restraint is freedom and that this makes you free, that is not freedom. You are enslaved to the passions. One is enslaved to a woman, another to a man; one to gambling, another to cigarettes; one to drink, another to blasphemy, another to money, and on and on. You were already a servant, no matter how much you claim to be free.
“Let me help you,” I told him, “with what we mean when we say ‘servant.’ Paul plainly calls himself ‘a servant of Jesus Christ’—Paul, whose sandal we are not worthy to untie, considering all that he knew. But let me tell you something that may help you distinguish one kind of servitude from another.” And I told him the following story, which you may have heard before, either from someone else or from me. In the days of the slave trade, when human beings were bought and sold, a wealthy landowner once went to the market to buy slaves. He did indeed buy many. He would take each one from his former master and set him aside with the others. They would now be under his authority.
Among the slaves he bought was a very robust and powerful man. As we say, he was strong enough to squeeze oil from a stone. When the landowner had finished his purchases and separated the men from the others, he went away to attend to some business. Then he returned to take them to his distant farm, to the estate where he intended to put them to work. They were all talking; some were joking, some laughing and teasing one another. All except that robust, powerful man, who was downcast. You could not draw a single word from his mouth. His face was bitter with resentment. The landowner noticed him.
He approached and said, “Why are you so troubled? Are you ill? Are you in pain? Has something happened? Since we are still here in the city, we can go to a doctor and have you examined. What is wrong? Why are you sullen? Why are you sad?” The man would not speak. But his new master persisted in asking what was wrong. “Tell me,” he said. “We are not leaving until you tell me what is troubling you.” The man answered, “What do you expect? How can I possibly be cheerful after hearing how much you paid for me?” Because the seller had demanded a higher price for this robust, healthy, powerful man.
Without bargaining or protesting that the price was too high, the landowner had paid the astronomical sum the seller demanded. “When I heard how much you paid for me,” the slave said, “I understood how highly I had been valued. You certainly did not buy me because you loved me. You bought me to exploit me, to recover your money and make a profit from me. So now I understand what awaits me when we arrive: labor, so that you can recover what you paid for me and then profit from me.” “Is that why you are troubled, my good man?” the landowner asked. “Why should I not be troubled?” he replied. “How could I possibly find the cheerfulness to behave as the others do?” “Then listen,” the landowner said.
“I bought you so that I might have you as a servant.” “But why did you buy me?” the man asked. “I bought you so that I could set you free and give you your liberty. Go with God’s blessing; you are free.” The man turned to him and said, “Because of what you have done for me, I will always be your servant.” That, I told the student, is Christ. “He redeemed us from the curse of the Law.” He paid with His blood, whose value cannot be measured, and He set us free. That is why we willingly become His servants. We are not enslaved by a political party, by the hammer and sickle, by money, or by the flesh. We are servants of Christ because He freed us from slavery to Satan, paying the supreme price.
No financial mind or hand—not one, nor all of them together throughout all the ages—could ever calculate its value. They could not value all the blood of Christ shed on Golgotha; they could not even calculate the worth of a single drop. “So that is where you are taking the argument,” the student said. “Yes, that is where we are taking it,” I replied, “because that is the truth of the matter. And you are doing Christianity an injustice, because you have never studied it. You have never taken up the Gospel to examine and discuss it. Instead, you judge according to your flesh, according to the world, according to your ego, and according to the satanic spirit within you.” In any case, the people passed through the sea. What would anyone do after receiving such freedom? They had now been completely delivered. God had not merely shut their enemies out for the moment.
He had buried them forever. The persecution and exploitation were over; their enemies were gone, and the Israelites could live in freedom. The account then tells us what happened next. Listen to what it says: “But the Israelites walked on dry ground through the depths, between the waters of the sea on either side,” which had become two walls, one on their right and the other on their left. On that day the Lord delivered the people of Israel from the hands of the Egyptians. The Israelites saw the Egyptians lying dead, cast up on the shore of the sea. The people of Israel saw the mighty hand of God in what He had done to the Egyptians. And the people of Israel feared the Lord—that is, they revered Him.
They now took the Lord seriously. “Fear God, fear God.” This does not mean that a wife is to be terrified of her husband; it means that she is to respect him, regard him, and take him seriously. The people feared God and believed more deeply in Him and in His servant Moses, who had helped lead them out of that place. Then Moses and the Israelites sang this ode to God. Have you ever read the odes found in the Horologion? You know, for example, that we say, “My soul magnifies the Lord”; that is the Ninth Ode. There are others as well: a First Ode, a Second, a Third, a Fourth, and a Fifth. They refer to various remarkable events in the Old Testament, when those who had received God’s blessings spoke in thanksgiving.
Our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) speaks in the Ninth Ode and says, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” There is also the First Ode, containing the words Moses spoke after they had passed through the sea. The First Ode among the Church’s nine odes is the Ode of Moses. It is what we sing at Great Compline: “He has become my helper and protector unto salvation,” and so forth. Look up the texts. Moses spoke these words after they had crossed. Then two choirs were formed. One was the choir of men led by Moses; the other was the choir of women led by his sister Miriam. Even then they danced in order to give thanks to God.
The women were separate, and the men were separate. A dance with women alone is not right, nor is a dance with men alone. Nor is bathing with only men together or only women together appropriate, because many have fallen into sin in such circumstances. But there they danced and sang; they chanted hymns to God and did not sing about the flesh. They did not sing, “I will wait for you on the corner,” or “I opened your windows.” They sang nothing of that kind. They sang something altogether different: they offered prayer and gave thanks to God. This is a subject that should be discussed and requires time. But as I can see from the hourglass here, we must stop. Allow me to speak about these things next time, if God permits. Until then, farewell.

απίστευτα για πολλούς. Αν είναι δυνατόν! Μα είναι δυνατόν να ακούσεις εσύ τώρα που εγώ σου μιλάω; Πώς ακούς; Συνάθροισε, αν θέλεις, όλους τους καθηγητάς, τους ωτορινολαρυγγολόγους του κόσμου, όλων των αιώνων. Πώς γίνεται; Δεν ξέρουν πώς ακούει ο άνθρωπος. Λένε τι γίνεται. Το τι γίνεται το βλέπουν, τα κραδάσματα και λοιπά και λοιπά και λοιπά. Το πώς γίνεται δεν το ξέρουν. Πώς βλέπουμε; Πώς διακρίνουμε το μαύρο, άσπρο, κόκκινο, κίτρινο; Πώς; Δεν μπορούν να απαντήσουν όλοι οι οφθαλμολόγοι του κόσμου. Βλέπουν, περιγράφουν, δεν ερμηνεύουν. Πώς γίνεται;
Αν ήξερα τι θα πω εδώ που θα έρθω! Όλα αυτά έρχονται ένα ένα μόνα. Εσείς τα ακούτε τώρα. Θα έπρεπε η δικιά σας μαγνητοταινία ακριβώς αυτά που λέγω εγώ να τα γράφει. Θέλετε να πούμε ότι τα γράφει; Τα γράφει. Όταν βγείτε έξω και σας ρωτήσει ένας «τι έλεγε ο Παναγόπουλος μέσα;», μπορεί να πείτε ακριβώς τι έλεγα; Θα μπορείτε; Να μπορείτε. Αλλά μπορείτε και να μην πείτε ό,τι έλεγα. Πείτε: «Ξέρετε, σε μια στροφή εξύβρισε τον Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας. Αλλά άσ’ το μεταξύ μας». Δεν μπορεί να το πεις; Μπορεί να το πεις. Δεν μπορεί να πεις ότι εξύβρισα τον Μακαριότατο; Μπορεί. Ποιος είναι εκείνος που κόβει την ταινία και κολλάει μια άλλη ταινία μέσα σου και λέει άλλα;
Είναι λήπτης με τη δουλειά της μητέρας του; Πώς έγιναν τα κόκκαλα; Πες μου, ποιος τον συναρμολόγησε; Η άλογος φύσις; Σοβαρά; Η φύση κάνει ζωή; Άμα δεν υπάρχει ζωή, γίνεται ζωή; Ποιος του έφτιαξε τα έντερά του; Τα τρύπησε και τα κόλλησε; Ποιος του έβαλε αίμα μέσα; Ποιος του έφτιαξε την καρδιά του και την άφησε να δουλεύει; Ποιος τα έφτιαξε;
Του χάραξε τα δόντια για να μπορεί ο κακομοίρης να το αλωνίζει, να το αλέθει το φαγητό του. Ποιος του έκανε κυνόδοντες και ποιος του έκανε τραπεζίτες; Ποιος έκανε φατνίο να μπει μέσα, μέχρι τη φάτνη αυτή στο δόντι; Λέγεται φάτνη, φατνίο. Μας το χαλάει κάποια φορά η απροσεξία του οδοντιάτρου. Ποιος έδωσε αυτό το δέρμα που λέγεται γλώσσα, που είναι το μεγαλύτερο χημείο του κόσμου;
τον εγωισμό του ανθρώπου. Εγώ το κατάλαβα αυτό. Όχι, πίστις. Η πίστη εξοστρακίζει τον εγωισμό. Μη σκανδαλίζεστε, λοιπόν, ποτέ σας· πού είναι αυτά; Τίποτα τα επιχειρήματα που σας έφερα. Μιλάω ένα μήνα και θα κάνεις μαλλί το στόμα. Τίποτα δεν έχει λύσει ο άνθρωπος από το μυστήριο που τον περιβάλλει. Ο ίδιος είναι μυστήριο και αναζητά μυστήρια. Ο θεληνώσει ο άνθρωπος και δεν προσγειώνεται. Έφτασε στη Σελήνη και 22 εκατοστά δεν ξέρει τι γίνεται εδώ μέσα, στην καρδιά του. Εδώ που χτυπούσε το χέρι ο τελώνης και έλεγε «ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ», εδώ ξέρει; Αλλά ο εγωισμός δεν τον αφήνει. Κόβεις εδώ, βγαίνει αίμα. Κόβεις το νύχι, δεν βγαίνει αίμα. Γιατί το νύχι δεν βγάζει αίμα; Και ποιος το αυξάνει το νύχι; Πώς εδώ δεν υπάρχει νύχι; Πώς γίνεται αυτό;
Τρελαίνεται ο άνθρωπος, μακριά από τον Θεό τρελαίνεται. «Κατεδίωξαν», λέει, «οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι καὶ εἰσῆλθον ὀπίσω αὐτῶν, πᾶς ἵππος Φαραὼ καὶ τὰ ἅρματα καὶ οἱ ἀναβάται εἰς μέσον τῆς θαλάσσης». Προχωρούν να τους φτάσουν. «Ἐγενήθη δὲ», έγινε δηλαδή με ένα νι, «κατὰ τὴν φυλακὴν τὴν ἑωθινήν», μέχρι τις ετάρτες πρωινής, από τις δύο μέχρι τις έξι, τελευταία φυλακή. Ο Θεός ρίπτει οργισμένο βλέμμα διά του πυρίνου στύλου και της νεφέλης κατά του στρατού των Αιγυπτίων και συνετάραξε τον στρατόν τούτον. Έγινε δηλαδή σεισμός, ένα πράγμα. Και τι είχε, ξέρετε τι είχε αποτέλεσμα αυτός ο σεισμός;
