Summary
The lecture continues a series on the Book of Exodus, reading Egypt as a type of hell, Pharaoh as a type of Satan, and the sea, the cloud and the manna as figures of the mysteries by which Christ leads man to the Land of Promise. Citing Saint Paul that Christ our Pascha is sacrificed and Saint John Chrysostom that whoever communes keeps Pascha on any day whatever, the speaker reads Exodus 13 on the seven days of unleavened bread and the sign upon the hand, which the Jews took literally in their phylacteries. A long appeal follows on honoring the relics of the departed, joined to the tradition of Adam's skull at Golgotha washed by the blood of the New Adam and to the certainty of the bodily resurrection, before the account resumes with the departure from Succoth to Etham under the pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night, and forty years of divine provision.

Our subject this evening will be the continuation of these themes, the six of them that we had done before Christmas. Let me remind you what those subjects of ours were. They were taken from the Exodus, from the Book of Exodus: exactly how the exodus of the Hebrews out of Egypt came about, with the help of Moses, through the Red Sea and into the Land of Promise. And we take it up because it contains many types, many figures, that have to do with the salvation of the human race and with the ways
Christ saves man and carries him over from Hell into the Land of Promise. For Egypt is a type of Hell, and Pharaoh is a type of Satan. And everything that Christ used in order to take man out of the hands of the spiritual Pharaoh, out of the hands of the material Pharaoh, and bring him across into the Land of Promise -- through the sea, through the cloud, through the manna -- all of these events were types, figures, of the Mysteries we have today, which exist above all in the Orthodox Church and which save man. Our last talk, the sixth one we gave on the Exodus, was about the Pascha of the Hebrews. If you remember how their Pascha is kept, we had explained there what the word Pascha means, how it is to be interpreted.
The word Pascha means exodus, it means crossing over, it means passage. The one thing it does not mean is food -- the eating and drinking that we have in mind when we say we are keeping Pascha. Now, this Pascha, this exodus, was bound up with a lamb that was roasted on a spit; and when they slaughtered the lamb they kept its blood and smeared it on the doorposts of their houses, because that night the angel was going to pass through and strike down all the firstborn of the Egyptians, so that the Egyptians would have funerals on their hands and this would give the Hebrews the chance to leave undisturbed. And that is precisely why we have tied all this to our own spit-roasted lamb, and our Pascha has become not Christ but the lamb -- not the Lamb of God, but the lamb on the spit. That is what we have made of it.
God sent Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, and he laid him like a lamb upon the altar, and then from above God said to him: no, do not lay your hand upon the child and slaughter him, he owes nothing. I have a lamb of my own, which I shall slaughter in due time, and its blood will cleanse the whole world of sin. And when Abraham turned around and looked, he saw there a tree which is called Sabek -- and it is still there in Jerusalem to this day. A ram was caught by its horns, tangled in the wood and held fast there. That wood was a type of the Precious Cross, and the Lord said that this ram was a type of Christ, who was slain afterwards.
You will remember this even from school: this is the tenth plague of Pharaoh, that all the firstborn were killed. In any case, on that night the opportunity was given for the whole people to cross over, without the people of Israel suffering any loss at all. So they set out, and indeed he had given them the command to have no leaven with them. The leaven had to be cleared out from the day their feast began, and that is why it is called the feast of unleavened bread. When there is no leaven you get what we call lagana, you get unleavened bread. It is not raised bread, a loaf that has risen; it is something flat and low, unleavened -- the very thing that the Papists, unfortunately, use in
what they call their liturgies. We use the bread that our Christ used on the evening of Great Thursday: a morsel, a piece of bread -- the one for whom I dip it, the one to whom I dip it in the dish, in the bowl, and give it, he is the one who will betray me. So on that table there was bread, and there was a dish with broth in it. There was no broth at the Pascha of the Hebrews. There it was a lamb spitted on two forked sticks and hung up, and they ate the flesh carefully, leaving the whole skeleton untouched.
And this depicted Christ, who on the Cross would not have His bones broken -- they would not break His legs to make Him die quickly so that He could be buried, because the Sabbath was beginning and they had their feast. So that is roughly where we had got to; I have simply drawn the events together again and you will remember them. Now, to continue: this feast lasted seven days, seven days with unleavened bread. And our own feast, not the feast of unleavened bread but the feast of Pascha, is also seven days. Our people, with their own homespun theology, count so many days for Christmas, so many for Theophany, and so many for the Resurrection. Nowadays, of course, we have simplified it all. But Bright Week really is Pascha. Monday of Pascha, Tuesday of Pascha, Wednesday of Pascha -- it is Pascha. On these days a person ought to be in church and to receive Holy Communion every single day, regardless of fasting. At Pascha there is no fasting.
At Pascha there is no penthos, no mourning; and fasting is mourning, and there is no mourning at Pascha. There is even a Canon which urges people to come to church and to receive Communion, to delight, as it says, in the Holy Mysteries. And yet if anyone sees a person going to receive Communion on Monday of Pascha, he will do everything he can to push him away; whereas in fact the one who does not receive Communion is the one who ought to be excommunicated, and today it is the one who goes to receive who is excommunicated. And this does not come only from the laity, but unfortunately from certain clergy as well who are ignorant of these things. They ask, what did you eat yesterday? Whatever you ate, Father, so did I -- did you not eat something with meat or dairy in it yesterday? It is Pascha; people do not fast at Pascha. And tomorrow are you going to serve the Liturgy again, are you going to receive again? And so you will go on picking the rest of the lamb clean.
And further, the layman is no different from the clergyman as regards Holy Communion. The difference is only where you stand in relation to the chalice: the one receives from inside the altar with his own hand, and the other receives outside, with the hand of the priest, of course. That is the answer. On this matter too there is the same ignorance. And if anyone is seen by the rest, they treat him as though he were profane. Whereas the guilty one is the one who does not go to receive Communion, not the one who goes. So it was a commandment that on those days there should be nothing leavened on the table, that there should be no leaven at all. The leaven was a type of sin. And that is exactly why a person is forbidden to eat of Christ our Pascha, to receive Communion, while he is leavened with sins; he must come unleavened. Christ our Pascha is sacrificed, says Paul, and we must be unleavened.
As often as a man receives Communion, he keeps Pascha -- whether today, or tomorrow, or whenever it may be, says the divine John Chrysostom. Pascha is not only then, when the feast comes round; rather, as often as a man receives Communion, he keeps Pascha, because he sits at the table where the calf is ample, as Saint Gregory says. So here is where we are, and specifically at chapter thirteen, verse six. Six days, it says, you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day is a feast of the Lord. The seventh day, it says, is dedicated to the Lord. Bread without leaven you shall eat for seven days; and during these days no leavened bread shall be set out for food. Leavened bread shall not be offered. Leavened bread shall vanish from among you. There shall be none of it, wherever you may be. All this, of course, was said to them in Egypt, and that is why, when they went out, they took no leaven with them. This came to pass as a memorial of what God did for us, when we were going out of Egypt. And it goes on to say: you shall put some sign upon your hand, or keep this before your eyes always, and remember this event. And in this way the law of the Lord shall be always in your mouth. Now the Jewish tradition took this literally,
and the Israelites made little boxes, like small cases, little objects which they hung here on their heads and down on their clothes; and inside these they kept certain passages of Scripture, above all from the Pentateuch -- from Genesis, from Deuteronomy, from Leviticus and so on -- what a man must do and what he must not do. They always kept them in front of them, that is, they had them on hand so as not to depart in the slightest from exactly what God had told them. You must keep this law, it says, at the appointed time of year, and you must not fail to do so in time to come. For He said, this shall be done as a memorial for ever. And you know
that the Jews, those of them who still stand firm in their faith as they believed it and have not come over to Christ, have a set day on which they keep their Pascha. And we, as Orthodox Christians, always take care that our Pascha does not fall together with that of the Jews. The Jews always keep their Pascha earlier. We wait for the Pascha of the Jews to pass, and then we fix our own Pascha. And this, it says, shall be done for ever, because God did a great thing back then: He brought this people out of slavery, and it had to be a symbol, so to speak, of how Jesus Christ would come and bring us too out of the slavery of Satan. He came to set us free from the ruler of death.
And for this reason He abolished death and the author of death, Satan, and set us free from him. And when the Lord your God brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, according to the oath that God has sworn -- I will bring you in, He says -- the land which He gave to your forefathers, then you shall set apart and dedicate every firstborn male to the Lord. Here is something we ought to know, all of it, because it is speaking about us; and yet we do not know it. The Hebrews, because of the blood of the lamb, had no victims among their firstborn, unlike the firstborn of the Egyptians, who were killed. So to whom did they owe the preserving of their life? Who was it that granted them that life of theirs?
The blood of the lamb granted them their life. Consequently all the firstborn are debtors to the Lord, to that Lamb, and they must be dedicated to God. But it was not possible for all of them to be dedicated to God, and so now a substitution is made. Notice what it says. Every firstborn male, then, of the oxen and of the other domestic animals that are born among you, you shall dedicate to the Lord. But every firstborn of a donkey you shall replace with a sheep. A donkey has been born; a donkey ought to be sacrificed; but a donkey is not sacrificed in the Church
to God, and so you will take a lamb so that the donkey may live. Because of the lamb, the donkey lives. And if you have no lamb to bring, you will pay the price of the lamb instead of the donkey. We were the ones who deserved Hell, we were the ones who ought to have been sacrificed with nowhere to turn for help. But Another was sacrificed, Another's blood was shed, the Lamb of God, and so we are the ones who escape. See how these things are all symbols. If you do not replace it with a sheep, you will pay the equivalent sum of money. And likewise, for every firstborn of a human being, you shall pay into the temple the sum equivalent to a sheep. And if your son asks you about these things and says, what is this that you are doing, what are these things, why do you do them?
you shall answer him: I do it because the Lord with His almighty hand brought you out of Egypt, out of that place of slavery. If we are free, we are free because someone laboured before us and delivered us from that slavery. We have an obligation here, and sadly we neglect it. People tell their children many things, plenty of stories and plenty of fairy tales. But they do not tell them what Christ did for them and what Christ is doing. Nowadays, of course, people do not know; but there are also some who do know and say nothing. A whole feast of Christmas has gone by, and in Orthodox homes there was no conversation about Christmas. Christ was humiliated, He was circumcised, and there was no conversation about it. Christ humbled Himself, He was abased, and He went down into a ditch, into a river,
He was baptised like a sinner by His own servant, and there was no conversation about these things. Someone will say, we are not trained, we have not been taught. That is true. But why have we not been? We learned a trade, we learned the language, we learned science, we learned this and that. Why should we not know this as well? Compared with all the rest, if we never learn those other things it is nothing, the world does not come to an end.
But if we do learn this one thing, then the world will come, and an account will be demanded of us -- you may be sure of that. People say all sorts of things: come here, my child, and I will show you where the boundaries are; come here and I will show you how far our own plot of land goes; come here and I will show you this and that, come here, come here. But will he do the same thing for the faith as well? A man will have to give an account. He was under obligation to tell his children that this and that happened, and that this is why we do this thing, as a memorial. So then, you shall wear some sign on your hand which you will always see and remember
that the Lord with His almighty right hand brought you out of Egypt. And when Pharaoh set the people of Israel free -- for he told them, go -- when he saw that grief, when he saw all that black mourning dress, when he heard that weeping and wailing throughout the whole land of Egypt, some burying children and others burying animals -- for I do not know whether you have noticed, in every house that had no firstborn child, no children to be struck down so that there would be a funeral, an animal was struck down instead; so they had the funeral of an animal -- when he heard all this, he said to them, go, and do not stop anywhere, you are free. How quickly self-interest and all such things change a man.
But afterwards he changed his mind again -- I do not know whether you have read this or whether you know it -- and that is why he ran after them, to bring them back once more. And God had set a trap for him there. Now God did not lead them to Canaan by way of the land of the Philistines, because that country was near to Egypt, and God took thought. God, it says, did not lead them along a road that passed beside the borders of Egypt, but took them through the wilderness, to get them as far away from Egypt as He could, and as quickly and as surely as He could. Lest, He says, on that road My people should meet with war from the Philistines, and change their minds and go back to Egypt.
You can put yourselves inside the psychology of these people. The Hebrews were in no condition to fight a war. These were men who had been slaves for four hundred years. They had never once held a weapon in their hands; they had never been trained. They worked from morning till night and from night till morning. They were worn down, exhausted. They ate whatever scraps were thrown to them, and I don't know what else, the cheapest food there was. How was a man like that going to stand up and fight a war against those people just to get through, just to cross over? Besides, he had not yet grasped what this exodus was, what this whole thing was, who was with him, who had ordered it. And there was every chance he would lose heart and throw it all away, and start cursing the day, and turn back.
"I'm a slave; I'm not going to fight a war on top of it and pour out my blood and leave my bones here in the desert, in the sand." So God, who is all-wise, knowing the make-up of the Hebrews, tied their path down for them from far off. He guided Moses: you will go this way. Even though that other road, the one that goes across toward Sinai, which was where they were commanded to arrive, is the shorter one, he still took them the long way around to spare them these temptations. And Moses writes this down here in the Pentateuch. God says it: "For this reason God commanded the Israelites to make a circuit, taking the road toward the desert and the Red Sea."
There are two roads, for those of you who want to hear a little more about it, and let the rest of you bear with me, two roads that run from Egypt into Palestine. The first is shorter and easier, and it leads through the country of the Philistines, about a fifteen-day journey, and it is called the Road of the Land of the Philistines, that is what Scripture calls it in the text. And there is a second one, called the Road into the Desert, which leads out toward the wilderness, and this is the one the funeral procession followed when it carried the bones of Jacob, because he died down there, and from there they carried him and took him and buried him in his homeland. It was his command that they bury him in his homeland, and not leave his bones in Egypt.
Jacob, as you know, went down there with all his children, seventy souls, a whole household, and they stayed there and multiplied. Even so, he had begged them that his remains, his body and his bones, should go back to his homeland. Read it in Genesis, chapter 50, verse 10, and you will find this detail. So the elder chose this second road and not the first, to head off exactly what I told you about, the make-up of the Hebrews. And in the fifth generation from the time the Israelites entered Egypt, they came out of Egypt. They went down, as you know, with seventy people, and then in the course of about four hundred years, three hundred and fifty odd years,
they were roughly three million people, six hundred thousand men alone who were able to bear arms. Those were the ones who came out after four hundred years, with the help of Moses. And when Moses left, he took the bones of Joseph with him. Joseph, Joseph was the first one, the one his brothers sold into Egypt, who became the reason they all ended up going down there. Joseph had begged them: when you leave, take my bones out of here as well. In other words, he had made a prophecy that the Hebrews would not stay in Egypt. Their work is not there. Just as our own
work is not on this earth; we are destined for somewhere else. We are not residents of the earth, we are tenants of the earth, and one day we will be served our notice to leave. And he had commanded them to take their remains with them.
Their remains. And it says here that Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, and it says that Joseph had put the Israelites under oath, saying: The Lord will certainly visit you, He will visit you, He will not leave you here.
He will lead you into Canaan. Then take my bones from here and carry them with you. "You shall carry up my bones from here with you." That is the text: take my remains along with you. And his remains did not stay in Egypt; they went to the land of Canaan, to the Land of Promise, the remains of Joseph. I don't know whether you know of a parallel to this; I mention it just for your general knowledge. When the flood came, God gave the command that the remains of Adam be taken into the Ark, and Noah took the skull of Adam and the rest into the Ark, and when the flood stopped, that skull was preserved, it came to light again, and it ended up at Moriah, right there, and there it stayed. And later on, when Solomon came, in his wisdom
he recognised that this skull was Adam's. So that little hill directly underneath the place where Golgotha stands above, where the new Adam was crucified, is the chapel of Adam. And tradition says that when Christ was crucified up above, the new Adam, it rained in torrents, and the water together with the blood of Christ ran all the way down to the skull of Adam and washed the skull of Adam, the forefather of our race. That is why that place is called the place of the skull, that is the reason. And that is why, underneath the Cross, the iconography always shows a skull with blood dripping down onto it from above. That is the scene. And from this now
all of this is confirmed: that Jacob had within him both the prophecy and the love of his homeland, so that his remains would be taken there, and that Joseph in his turn had given the command, when you leave, when the Lord visits you, and how did he know that He would visit them. Years went by after that, they were in slavery, and yet in the end they took him with them, holding on to this promise. From one generation of tradition to the next, they took his remains and carried them there. Do you want me to tell you something more? Listen. This is going to be a bit of a slap in the face for us, because we do not treat the remains of our parents and of the people we love the way those people treated theirs back then. And we are not even counting the wives who never cared for their husband's body when he died.
They lived together, they sinned together, they had their good times together, and so on. But the moment he died they were frightened of him and handed him over to the undertakers, and that was the end of it, they were rid of him. Today the remains of many people have been burned down there and turned into fertiliser, because their families could not be bothered, they never went to do the exhumation of the remains. To take up the remains, to wash them, to care for them, to have a Divine Liturgy served, to make the kollyva, to have the prayers read over them, and then to lay them to rest. Or, if it were possible, to keep them in their own home.
It is possible to keep them at home. It is your father, it is your mother, it is your wife, it is your child. Do bones bite? Are you afraid? And yet such a war has been waged against Orthodox relics that it does a great deal of harm to people. Thank you.
These remains will one day become your father again, your mother, your husband, your child. These are the very remains that will be raised on the last day. God will not make new ones. These are the remains. You have that little Holy Week booklet. Open it on Holy Friday, when we serve the Epitaphios. When you go home, you have that little booklet we hold in our hands on Holy Friday, the one for Holy Week. Open it at the place you come to when the Epitaphios returns from the procession. What does that prophecy say? It speaks about this very Resurrection. It says how each one will take back his own bones; I will not take my wife's, nor will I take yours. I will take my own. And she will take her own. You will take your own, and each one will take what is his. We will become human beings again. Sinews will come into them, flesh will come, skin will come, spirit will come, and they will live. We will become human beings again. That is what He has said. But we do not believe it.
And that is exactly why we take no account of these things, why we do not value them: the remains of an Orthodox Christian, which have been steeped in the Body and Blood of Christ. Why, they are the terror of Satan. How is it, when Satan sees the relics of a Saint? How is it, what does he do? He is afraid, he trembles. And if we had devout parents, we could be calling on their intercessions too, because such people have boldness before God. They may have left this husk of theirs down here for a while, for a few years, but we will take it up again tomorrow, whether we want to or not. And those who were burned down there into the fertiliser and sold off as fertiliser, they will take theirs up too. And those whom the wild beasts ate, and those whom the fish ate, and those who lie inside the ice, and so on. We will all be raised up again on the last day, whether we want it or not. He is not going to ask our opinion, have no fear about that. So do not think it is only a matter of whether you feel like believing it. You see how people, even now, will say: please, do not leave me here. Do not leave me here.
that their relics must be taken along with them. The people came from Asia Minor. They brought Saint Touriverios with them. They brought Saint John the Russian. They brought Saint George down here. How many of them carried their holy relics along with them! Now those, of course, were relics that had been declared holy and all the rest of it. They held them as their treasure. But the remains of their own parents too, if they could have carried them in a little bag, they would have carried them along, they would have taken them. Whereas we bury them, or we stick them away in the ossuary; we have no room, the remains of our own parents have no place in our house. There could be a place. They have all sorts of junk piled up in the attic that is just sitting there gathering filth and clutter.
At the same time there could be a spot where they could be placed in nice little containers; there are so many ways it could be arranged properly and safely. We have never been formed to understand that the dead do not eat; it is the living who eat. Be afraid of the living, and do not be afraid of the dead.
As for me, can I say it? I cannot really say it. You might say to me, have you done it yourself? No, I have not done it either. And it goes on here and says this. The Lord, he says, will surely visit you one day and will lead you up to Canaan. Then, he says, I beg you, take my bones and carry them with you. Do not leave me behind here. I, who came here so that you could be saved and live, do not leave me here after all this and go off without me. So the Israelites set out from Succoth, and they came and encamped at Etham, near the wilderness. God was leading them; they did not know the road, but God was leading them. By day He covered them with a cloud in the form of a pillar. A pillar, a cloud, as we would say, and during the day
as they walked it covered them over, so that they would not be scorched by the sun. And to show them the road by night, He gave them light by a pillar of fire. So the cloud that made a covering over them by day was turned by night into light and gave them light. And they walked for a long time, day and night, until they were far away. Never once during the whole journey did the cloud in the form of a pillar cease by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, before the whole people of Israel. In this way He cared for them, He sheltered them, because I do not know whether you have read
that for forty years they did not build, they did not sow, they did not sew, they did not order a pair of shoes, they did not cook. Their shoes did not wear through, their clothes did not wear through. And every single day He sent them the food of angels. For forty whole years. This is the same God we have. But we have neither read about this God nor do we believe in Him. We have placed everything in our own cleverness, our own strength, our own capability, our science, our knowledge, and not in God.
And if you go and read now how the ancient-astronaut people, the ones with the extraterrestrials, interpret all this, you will tear your hair out. Anything to reject the miracle and the power of God. In any case, in chapter fourteen it goes on to say this. The Lord spoke to Moses and said: Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi-hahiroth, which lies between Migdol and the Red Sea, and opposite Baal-zephon. Yes, opposite that place you shall encamp, and near the Red Sea. And when Pharaoh sees this, he will say to his people why this and that has happened behind him. This does not suit him at all; he will regret it, he has lost so many people, he has lost so much labour,
…he will say: The Israelites are only wandering about in that region, because the wilderness has shut them in. And I will allow — God goes on saying to Moses — I will allow Pharaoh's heart to be hardened, and he will come after the Israelites, pursuing us. He will fly into a rage and come right up behind you. Pay attention: I am telling you ahead of time what is going to happen to you. And then I will be glorified through Pharaoh. This pursuit by Pharaoh, and our deliverance from the sword and from Pharaoh's chase, will become the occasion for the power of God to be displayed. Then I will be glorified through Pharaoh and through his whole army,
and all the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord. And the Israelites did just as the Lord commanded. They turn back from Etham and encamp where God had commanded them. Then word was brought by certain men who were keeping watch on the movements of the Israelites — word was brought to Pharaoh, to the king of the Egyptians, that the people of Israel had departed, that not one of them was left. And the heart of Pharaoh and of his courtiers was turned against the people of Israel, and they said: What is this that we have done, in sending away the sons of Israel, so that they should no longer serve us? What has happened to us? We let them go and off they went, and now we have lost all that profit. Why did we set them free, just like that, to leave and to stop working for us?
So Pharaoh gave the order: and Pharaoh yoked his chariots and took all his people along with him. Pharaoh, it says, ordered the two-wheeled war chariots to be yoked, and he took all his fighting men and brought them with him; and taking six hundred picked two-wheeled war chariots of the whole Egyptian cavalry, and their commanders generally, he comes against the Israelites. Their chariots, so that you know, were like this, as the commentators tell us. They had two wheels, two horses and two riders. Picture a chariot with two wheels, two horses at full gallop, and two men aboard. So Pharaoh, it says here, taking
picked two-wheeled war chariots of the whole Egyptian cavalry, and their commanders, came against the Israelites; he raced up close to them. And this happened because the Lord allowed the heart of Pharaoh, the king of the Egyptians, and of his courtiers to be hardened, and so Pharaoh went after the Israelites in pursuit of them. But the Israelites were going out of Egypt protected by the majestic, all-powerful hand of God. They were not left on their own; God was covering them from behind. For God placed that dark cloud between the Egyptians and the Israelites. And they could not see them up ahead. Even if they wanted to drive them off, to strike them, they could not see them.
It covered them; it came in between the pursuers and the pursued — the power of God came in, this cloud. As the cloud moved forward, the Egyptians imagined they were down here somewhere; besides, they could see the tracks, as we say. So the Egyptians followed after them in pursuit and then found them encamped near the Red Sea. All the cavalry, the two-wheeled battle chariots, the horses of Pharaoh, encamped nearby, right opposite them. Pharaoh drew near. But then the Israelites lifted up their eyes — because it was not only hard for the Egyptians to see the Israelites, it was also hard for the Israelites to see the Egyptians. This was a job God had taken on entirely by Himself.
The Israelites, it says, lifted up their eyes, and the two forces see that the Egyptians have encamped; they realize that the Egyptians are right behind them. They were afraid and cried out to the Lord, and they said to Moses: Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us out to die in the wilderness? Listen to that. Nice, they say to him. They turned on Moses, since he was the reason they had left. Was there no way to bury us, then — were there no graves in Egypt? Did we have to come all this way to die out here and be buried in the sand? That is how they complained. What is this you have done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Why did you drag us along with you, man? Why didn't you leave us where we were? Because when they saw that horde behind them — the one side armed with chariots and everything else, and their own side carrying children in their arms and dragging along the odd goat — the poor people had nothing else to drag along.
it is that very thing we spoke of: Leave us alone in Egypt — let us stay as slaves to the Egyptians, for it is better for us to be slaves
in Egypt than to die in this wilderness. And you should know that many among us say this too, in another way. From the moment a person turns back to Christ and walks away from Satan, repents, goes to Holy Confession, tears down the unlawful bed, sets about restoring some justice and making good the damage he has done, putting things in order — from that moment things start to catch fire for him. Satan is enraged and opens war against him. I was doing fine, he tells you, back when I never went to church. Things went well for me in the days when I lived that other life. Where is God now? Ever since I turned back, I am burning, I am on fire, look at the things happening to me.
The man does not understand. He would rather have that old life without the war than this life with the war. That is what these people are saying too. And we are their descendants in this — we say the very same thing. Better, he says. As long as I am alive, what do I need all this for? Sitting there fasting, sitting there practising self-control, pulling the prayer rope through my fingers, going off to confession, and all the rest of it? I had no pangs of conscience then, and no temptation came at me so quickly. Now I see wickedness everywhere, now everything looks upside down to me, now I see it all. But the truth is that from the moment you declare war on the devil, from that moment the trouble begins. What do you expect? As long as you go along with him he does not bother you, he helps you, everything falls out on your right hand. But from the moment you say no to him about one thing, from that moment relations are broken off and the war begins.
I have said it and they say it too, and a person will see his life lived according to Satan and his life lived according to Christ, and he will know what is going to happen to him from the moment he says no to Satan and yes to Christ. If many of us have no wars and no temptations and so on, it is because we have come to terms with Satan. Satan does not trouble his own people. As popular theology puts it, one crow does not peck out the eye of another.
Satan is always against those who are not his own. The people who belong to him he leaves in peace. Of course, if you have read the Gerontikon, there was once an elder going down to the city with his disciple. Before they reached the city they came upon a church. And he saw two demons up on the bell tower. Demons. The young man, the disciple, saw them, and said nothing. It is a church, he tells himself, of course demons will come here to drive the faithful away. Going on a little further, he saw a hut, and around that hut he saw a whole swarm of demons, all around it. So his curiosity got the better of him and he asked the elder. Elder, he says, did you see anything?
at the church we passed — I saw, he says. What did you see, Elder? I saw, he says, two evil ones. And here, he says, do you see anything at this hut? I do see, he says. What do you see, Elder? Many demons, he says, I see many. Well, he says, how is that to be explained? What are all these ones doing here? Back there at the church, where so many people go, there were only two. Here at a single hut, what can it be that has them all gathered together? Ah, he says to him, do you know what it is? At the church two are enough, he says; two keep guard over the whole lot of them, because they have no faith there, they do not pray, they just go up to church to show off their clothes. But here, he says, there is a married couple who pray here. That is why all these devils are gathered here. And that is the truth. So then, they preferred to die as slaves and be left in peace — just as many of us, men and women, choose to stay slaves and remain slaves.
slaves of the flesh, of the world and of Satan, so as not to have to struggle with their own flesh, with the world, with their so-called comforts. And I would rather be a slave — that is what he is saying here. It is better, he says, that I should be a slave in Egypt than that I should die in this wilderness. Whereas the Christian says the opposite: I would rather die with Christ and with nothing else, not with Satan. The text puts it beautifully: For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this wilderness. And Moses answered the people; take courage, he tells them. Because just as when the people of Israel went off as slaves to Babylon for seventy years and God sent Jeremiah along with them to comfort them, so here too they had Moses to comfort them. And so he says to the people: take courage,
stand firm and watch for the salvation that will come from God. God will rescue us from them, he says, just as He rescued us and helped us to get out of their hands. And to come out and get this far, loaded down with all that gold and all those other things. Because they took a great deal of gold when they left that place. In the same way God will send His help among us again — do not be afraid.
just as you see the Egyptians before you today, you will never see them again in time to come. He is prophesying here, because a little later, when the miracle happened and the Red Sea opened and the people of Israel passed through, the others ran up to cross as well, but he struck the sea again and the sea closed and drowned them. Take a good look at them, he tells them, because this is the last time you will see them. He is prophesying here.
The Lord will fight for us.
God, with such indignation, with such force. Sadly, a cloud often comes over us in the hard moments of our life and hides God from us. Even though we have I do not know how many dozens of icons hanging there in our house with their lamps, there come moments when it hides God from us. And it happens in sin too, on the other side. Because when a person sins, it hides God from him as well. The devil does it, and a person sins right there in the very eye of God. Yes — do not come now, you will come when he leaves, I will tell you when. The husband will leave and you will bring the other man inside, will you. The wife will leave and you will bring the other woman inside, will you. But Christ, who never leaves, who is there whether you want Him there or not, the eye that sees all things — Him you do not see.
an incident — this took place here in Athens, six or seven years ago. There were two friends, and one of them got married and invited the other to a dinner, this friend of his. And the newly married lady arranged a rendezvous with her husband's friend. She set up a meeting about twenty days out. On that day she told her husband as he was leaving for work that when he came back in the afternoon he should not worry if she was not there. I will have gone to the dentist, she said, a tooth is hurting me. The man believed that his wife was going to the dentist. And indeed she made her arrangements according to the appointment she had that afternoon.
She got herself ready, looked at herself in the mirror this way and that, front and back. She picked up her handbag and was on her way out. In the hallway, up in the entry, she had the icon corner, and she had put the wedding crowns up high so they would not get dirty. And as she went past, the case with the crowns falls down behind her and shatters into a million pieces.
She was terrified, she understood, and she turned back. And she hears a voice from within saying: Go on, then. What are you afraid of? These have no place where you are going. Why do you keep the wedding crowns up high while you yourself fall so low? So then, if a person would only see God first, before doing anything at all, he would have prevented a great deal of evil and done a great deal of good. But I do not know how it is that at a certain moment we come to: turn off the light, do not let them hear us, walk softly, do this, do that, do not tell anyone, keep it between us, and all the usual things. And God is nowhere. How it is that this presence of God everywhere goes dark in front of us, I do not know. And afterwards the reckoning begins. As for Satan — I do not know whether you have heard what they say about him.
He has a quilt, they say, and a whistle. He covers a person with the quilt so that they will sin. And once they have sinned, he yanks the quilt away. And then he starts blowing the whistle and calls out, "Come and look!" Because in the end everything gets uncovered. Everything comes out into the open afterwards. And so we have murders, and we have divorces, and we have prisons, and we have this and we have that. That is Satan. Man does not know him. He does not watch out for him as he should. The Lord, it says, will fight for us. Be still, and you will see. But in a case like this, a person has to pray. This, though, is a subject that will take us some time. And so, if you will allow me, let me stop here, and God willing we will continue it at our next meeting. Because I can see how the time is going, and so I have stopped here.

αυτό και κατήργησε τον θάνατο και τον αρχηγό του θανάτου, σατανά, τι μας απήλλαξε. Όταν ο Κύριος ο Θεός σου εισαγάγη σε εις την χώρα των Χαναναίων και δώσει σε σένα αυτήν συμφώνως με τον όρκον που έχει κάνει ο Θεός, θα σε εισαγάγω εγώ, τον οποίον έδωκε εις τους προπάτορές σου, θα χωρίσεις και θα αφιερώσεις παν άρρεν πρωτογέννητον εις τον Κύριον. Εδώ είναι κάτι που θα έπρεπε όλα αυτά να τα ξέρουμε, γιατί μιλάνε για μας, δεν θα τα ξέρουμε. Οι Εβραίοι εξαιτίας του αίματος του αρνίου δεν είχαν θύματα στα πρωτότοκα, εν σχέση με τα πρωτότοκα των Αιγυπτίων, τα οποία εφονεύθησαν. Γυνάμοι τίνους διατερείχε η ζωή; Ποιος τους χάρισε τη ζωή αυτών;
στον Θεό θα πάρεις ένα αρνί για να ζεις. εξαιτίας του αμνού ζει όνος. Εάν δεν έχεις ούτε αμνό να πας, θα δώσεις το αντίτιμο του αμνού, αντί για τον όνον. Εμείς έπρεπε να κολαζόμεθα, εμείς έπρεπε να θυσιαζόμεθα και να μην βρίσκουμε πουθενά παροχωρία. Θυσιάστηκε όμως άλλος, παίξε το αίμα του άλλου, το αμνός του Θεού, και έτσι γλιτώνουμε εμείς, πώς τα συμβολικά υπάρχουνε. Εάν δεν τον αντικαταστήσεις δια προβάτου, θα δώσεις το ανάλογο χρήμα. Επίσης, δια παν πρωτότοκον ανθρώπου τώρα, θα καταβάλλετε εις το ναόν το ανάλογον χρήμα του προβάτου. Εάν ο Υιός σου σε ρωτήσει με τα ταύτα λέγων, τι είναι αυτό το οποίο κάνεις, τι είναι αυτά, γιατί τα κάνετε αυτά;
πάντοτε ο σατανάς εναντίον εκείνων οι οποίοι δεν είναι δικοί του. Στους ανθρώπους οι οποίοι είναι δικοί του δεν τους πειράζει. Βέβαια αν έχετε διαβάσει το γεροντικό, ότι κάποτε κατέβαινε ένας γέρων με τον υποτακτικό του στην πόλη. Πριν φτάσουν στην πόλη συνήθισαν μια εκκλησία. Και είδε πάνω στο καμπαναριό δύο σατανάδες. Σατανάδες. Τους είδε ο νεαρός, ο υποτακτικός, δεν είπε τίποτα. Εκκλησία σου λέει είναι, θα έρθουν σατανάδες εδώ πέρα να διώξουν τους πιστούς. Προχωρώντας σε μερική απόσταση είδε μια καλύβη, αλλά στην καλύβη εκείνη είδε ένα λεφούσι από σατανάδες γύρω γύρω. Του είχανε περιέργεια λοιπόν και ρώτησε το γέροντα. Γέροντα λέγει, είδες τίποτα;
