Summary
The lecture opens by explaining the liturgical exclamation "Stomen kalos," placed immediately after the Creed as a call to stand firm in the dogmas just confessed, and traced by tradition to the Archangel Michael at the fall of the angels. The lecture argues that Christ used leavened bread at the Supper, since He dipped the morsel and unleavened bread cannot be dipped, and criticizes the Latin use of azyma on this basis. The law of the Pascha excludes the uncircumcised, which the speaker treats as a type of baptism supporting infant baptism, and he closes with the lamb roasted whole with no bone broken on a cross-shaped spit as an image of the crucified Lamb of God.

Up above I see a question that asks the same thing — it asks me to explain the phrase "Stomen kalos," quoting the ancient exclamation that we hear in our Divine Liturgy: "Stomen kalos, stomen meta phovou" — "Let us stand well, let us stand with fear." This has been placed exactly at the point where the Creed ends. I don't know whether you've noticed it. It is an exhortation to the faithful to stand firm in the things they have just confessed,
the Creed.
It sums up all the articles of the faith in a few words. "I believe in one God." "I believe in one Holy Spirit." "I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church." That He became man for us, that He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, that He was buried, that He rose again. "I confess one Baptism," and so on. And so, all of this dogma that is contained in the Creed — at the end the priest calls out: stand well in these dogmas. "Stomen kalos" — "Let us stand well" — is taken, according to tradition, from the Archangel Michael, who, when the fall of the angels took place, stood in the midst and said, "Stomen kalos." Stand firm, do not fall. The Church takes up this cry and places it right there, straight after the Creed, to remind the people.
Don't you fall either, the way the angels fell. So stand rightly, hold fast to the confession you made just a moment ago. That's why these words have been placed exactly where they are in the Liturgy. Truly, the Orthodox faith is the most blameless of all, the most inviolate, the most incorrupt. We have the one true faith, the true religion, the true Church. That is, there is one faith, there is one Church. We have so many chapters, we bring one Gospel, and we draw out one interpretation from it — the interpretation is one. That is what this reminds us of, and that is why it was placed there: "Stomen kalos, stomen meta fovou" — let us stand well, let us stand with fear of God.
'Let us stand well.' It refers to the confession of faith we had just made a moment before, that is, the articles of the Faith which we confessed within the Divine Liturgy. That is the reason our Holy Church has placed it exactly where she has placed it. Now, as to our subject. We are in Exodus, in our sixth session, if I remember rightly, and specifically in chapter twelve, at the point where God had given His command to Moses: in what way they were to be kept safe, in what way they would not be destroyed. He told them to slaughter the lamb, to keep it, to gather its blood, and to put that blood on the doorposts.
Rather, they were to stay inside until morning, because an angel was going to pass through and strike all the firstborn, from man to beast, and in the morning all the Egyptians were in an uproar, and so they were forced to let the Hebrews go. And that is just what they managed to do, as it goes on to say. And indeed, we read the other day what was said about exactly how this was to be done. Now we come to a part that says they also had to remove the leaven from their houses for those seven days.
So the leaven is a type — a foreshadowing — of sin. And the person who eats the Pascha, that is, the one who receives Holy Communion, eats of the Lamb of God. And of course for us this does not happen only once, because we call this Pascha to mind many times over. Whoever receives Holy Communion, as the divine John Chrysostom says, celebrates Pascha — whether today, whether tomorrow, whether whenever. Is Holy Communion somehow better when it is received only at Pascha, on the day of Pascha, than on the other days? No, it is not. Holy Communion is the same on all the days, because it is one and the same Holy Spirit in Holy Communion. And so, whenever a person receives Holy Communion, he celebrates Pascha.
So at that time He had given the command that the leaven be removed, that there be no leaven at all. Listen to this. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; from the first day you shall remove the leaven from your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. Paul, who had these events in mind, when he writes his first letter to the Corinthians, the fifth chapter, verse five,
It says there how many people should come to it.
Very much.
In First Corinthians, chapter five, he says this: "Cleanse out therefore the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you are unleavened." That is, he did not want any leaven inside, "for Christ our Pascha was sacrificed for us." There a lamb was sacrificed to free the Hebrews from the destroying angel and from the fury of the Egyptians — there a lamb was sacrificed; here it says Christ was sacrificed. "Therefore let us keep the feast, not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
He shows that the leaven is sin, and that when a person comes forward to receive Holy Communion — that is, to keep Pascha — he has to be unleavened. Clean, in other words, free of sin. This is exactly what we Orthodox say: a person must be repentant and confessed, he must be clean. He must not come forward no matter what state his soul is in. It was on pain of death, on pain of destruction, that there be no leaven in the house. There was to be no leaven in the house at all. And from this it is proved that Christ did not eat the unleavened bread required by the Law, the way the Latins and the Roman Catholics use unleavened bread in the offering.
It says that He dipped the morsel in the dish, in the broth — He gave the bread and He dipped it. And unleavened bread cannot be dipped. It was artos, leavened bread. That is one more difference, one more proof. If Christ had kept the Passover of the Law, that is what it would have meant. And there was every chance they would have put Him in the dock for it; they would have had one more accusation to bring. They could not even find enough false witnesses to charge Him with other things, nor anything else at all — but if He had broken the Law of Moses, that alone would have been enough to condemn Him. Then it goes on and says: and on the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you. So the feast of the Pascha lasts seven days — something that carries over to us as well, and for us too it lasts seven days.
Keep in mind here what popular theology says: three days at Christmas, it says, three at Theophany, and six at the Resurrection. There is even a specific Canon about frequent Communion which says that there is a fast-free week, the week called Diakainisimos, Bright Week — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of Pascha — and that is because during those days there is no fasting kept at all, and so it essentially permits daily Communion. This circumstance has a certain type behind it, a typological meaning, in what he said: no work at all shall be done on those days, except what is needed — that is, only what has to do with food.
On these days, festive and joyous days, He forbade any work at all, except for whatever each person needs in order to eat. That alone you may do. So you shall keep this feast of unleavened bread, because on this very day I brought your hosts — your people — out of the land of Egypt. As a perpetual ordinance you shall keep this day throughout your generations; you shall hand it down, so that all who come after you keep this day as well. You shall begin counting from the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, and you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the month, in the evening. Seven days.
"No leaven shall be found in your houses." That is, that bit of leaven has to be taken out completely; the house has to be entirely free of leaven. And whoever eats what is leavened, that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel. "Whether he is a stranger or born in the land, he shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread." In other words, even those who are not under the law, the uncircumcised who are staying in your houses, living there as if it were their own home — they too are not to eat it. And this, unfortunately, is exactly where we do the opposite.
Take this: we, as Orthodox Christians, are fasting on a Wednesday, say, or on a Friday, or it's Great Lent, and some guest comes who doesn't fast — he doesn't fast, so we set food in front of him that breaks the fast. This is exactly what is forbidden here. You are not to give it to him, it says, nor offer it to him. You understand what I mean. I see it, and I seize every chance I get to say that we handle this very badly. "I don't fast." Fine — I'm not asking you whether you fast or not, that's your own account. But in my house you won't be breaking the fast. "We have a fast today. Come another day when we don't, and we'll roast a young goat. But today, this is the food we'll be having." Instead we give in on this, so as not to offend anyone, not caring in the least whether we offend the One we say we believe in.
So then, Moses clearly received these commandments from God. Then we read that Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them: "Go and take for yourselves a lamb according to your families." Pascha is a Hebrew word, and it means exodus, it means crossing over, it means passing over. The word "Pascha" didn't start with us Orthodox — Pascha is a Hebrew word, and it goes back 1450 years before Christ. And in the twelfth chapter of Exodus you find the exact type, the pattern that prefigures what we have: how they drank, how they ate — all of it is taken from there.
"Take a bunch of hyssop and you shall dip it in the blood that will be in the basin." You will slaughter the lamb, you will gather its blood in a basin, and you will take a plant — hyssop — whose wood is red, and with it you will sprinkle; you shall strike the lintel and the two doorposts of the door. And you make it, evidently, here, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. "And none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning." And if you want to be safe, in a manner of speaking, behind that blood, you will stay inside there.
He goes on: because the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians. And when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. What stands out here is the weight He gives to that blood — that this blood had such power that it secured the lives of the people who took shelter behind it. Now, as you know, all of this is types, Old Testament types, and from there a person can grasp the whole reality. If in the types things had such power, then think what power things have now in the reality itself. If the blood of a ewe there, of a lamb, of a ewe —
If that blood could protect those people and preserve their life, their physical life at any rate — how much more power does the blood of the Lamb of God have in our case! In any case, it continues: "You shall keep this thing as a law." That is, God lays it down as law that they must take it seriously — "for you and for your sons forever. And when you come into the land which the Lord will give you" — here He makes a prophecy that He will count them worthy to enter the Promised Land, and they will no longer be slaves, they will have something of their own — "the land which the Lord will give you, just as He has spoken."
"You shall keep this service" — you will go on doing what He is now laying down for you as law. And when your children, who will be born later on, say to you, "What does this service mean to you? Why do you do it? What does it symbolise? What do you want to teach by it?" — then "you shall answer: This is the sacrifice of the Pascha to the Lord, because He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and saved our houses." In remembrance of that Pascha which happened then, because He passed us by, He spared us, He did not punish us there in Egypt — this you must know, that I did this for you. "Then the people bowed the head and worshipped."
As we would say, may it be blessed. And they departed — that is, these people raised no objections, they didn't say, "We won't do it," or, "Is this true? What is this new thing now?" They said yes, as you wish, may it be blessed. "And the children of Israel went away and did as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. And the Lord struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive in the prison house, and all the firstborn of the cattle." That is, He exempted no one — not the palace, not the prisons, not the poor, not the rich, not the educated, no one at all. Every house.
Every house had a funeral, whether of a person or of an animal. Because there might be a couple in one house, an old man with no children — there an animal was struck instead. In other words, there was no house without a funeral on that night. "And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no house where there was not one dead." Egypt became one endless cemetery in a single night. And under that pressure he called for Moses.
This is the second time he gives way, because until now he had not yielded, as you know, through all that had come upon him. "He called for Moses and Aaron by night and said: Rise up, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel, and go, serve the Lord as you have said." For this is what they kept asking of him — that he let them go and worship their God. But he, for reasons of economic advantage, because he needed his workforce, would not allow it. "And take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone. And bless me also" — bless me too. It is like what we were saying today about the divine Paul: strive together with me in your prayers, help me with your prayers. Here it is, "and bless me also."
Who knows how he felt at that hour — like a very small child, and clearly he understood that this was not just some people but a unique people, who do not have just some god but an almighty God, from whose hands and from whose wrath you cannot escape. That is plainly why he asked them to pray for him too. "And the Egyptians urged the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste" — the very ones who had oppressed them and had kept that people of Israel as captives. They had exploited them and made them work for them; and now they are clearly helping them to get away, helping them to get up and go, telling them to take everything they have and leave nothing behind of what they had gathered there.
They were helping them, in a great hurry, supposedly so as to be rid of them: "And the Egyptians urged the people, to send them out of the land in haste, for they said, We are all dead men" — we are all lost; as long as you stay here, we are ruined. "And the people took their dough before it was leavened," and took dough with them for the road. We are not inside those days yet. "And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders," wrapped in their garments. "And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses. And they asked of the Egyptians" —
— "vessels of silver and vessels of gold and raiment." I don't know whether you remember from earlier, He had told them: I will strike them at such an hour, and whatever you ask of them they will give you — that is, when you leave, ask them if you can. You will take all their gold and their silver as your wages, for all the years you have worked for them there. Not every one of them would have had work to give, but God would clearly move them at that moment, so that they would be found willing to give. And so the Israelites came out of Egypt in a certain sense paid for the work they had given there.
It says here, I see this: "And the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians." Sometimes I pray like this myself: Lord, let me find favour before this person, if I have to go and ask for something, for a job. As a human being you make a prayer and you say, let me find favour before him, dispose him kindly, let the way be open, as we say. Wherever I go, let them hear me, let them accept my opinion, my request. And so here it says: the Lord gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they asked, and they despoiled the Egyptians.
You understand now — these people, loaded down, with their own belongings and with whatever else they could take, gold and silver and anything of value, and they set out to leave in haste, at their exodus. "And the children of Israel departed from Rameses to Succoth" — these are places over there — about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides the children. Not counting the women: men, six hundred thousand, apart from the children. And see how Holy Scripture presents these people.
Further on it comes to the passage that speaks of Joshua son of Nun, and it says that out of these six hundred thousand men only two went into the Promised Land: Joshua son of Nun and Caleb. Not even Moses himself entered the land of promise. Moses disobeyed God and did not enter the land of promise; he was punished, and only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb went in, only two. And besides that, a journey of forty days he turned into forty years before reaching the Promised Land.
They left everything there; they all left their bones scattered in that wilderness. Six hundred thousand people did not reach the Promised Land, and Moses himself only saw it from far off — God had him go up on a mountain and showed it to him, and that for a single act of disobedience. And we, who do nothing right, expect to see the face of God. "And a mixed multitude went up with them also" — all sorts of other people — "and flocks and herds, very much cattle." That is, whatever Israel had gained, the Hebrews gathered it all up and took it with them.
"Which they brought out of Egypt, they baked unleavened cakes." In other words, the dough they had taken — if they had already made up the dough to knead it, they took that with them. They took it along, and wherever they halted they did not leave it behind; they took it and kneaded it on the road and baked it quickly on the road as they went. Then further down, as it appears, the situation changes — if you remember, the manna begins to come to them, and the food they ate for forty years. They had not yet prepared provisions for themselves, so they took what they had and went on, and they filled and closed it up and ate along the way; that is how it appears. "Now the time of the sojourning of the children of Israel, which they sojourned in Egypt," —
— was four hundred and thirty years. For four hundred and thirty years the Israelites were in Egypt. It is counted from the time Joseph went down there, sold by his brothers. That is where the history begins. He was the first to arrive in Egypt, sold by his brothers to the Midianites — if you remember, they threw him into the pit and sold him for silver. That pit exists to this day. Then, because of the great famine that came, and because Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dreams, if you remember — we remember it from school.
The ears of grain that swallowed the others, and the seven cows and so on — and Pharaoh made Joseph his Minister of Finance, as we would say, Joseph the all-comely. His brothers came and bought wheat and all the rest of it, and they were recognised there, and after that the old man came down too with the rest of the household, and they were seventy. The whole family, those seventy persons, in four hundred and thirty years give us a growth of about three million people. Here we have six hundred thousand men able, in a sense, to bear arms, as we would say, or to work, apart from the children; add the women too and we come to about three million — in four hundred and thirty years.
We have a history of three thousand years and we are still eight million; while childbearing is strongly encouraged among Jewish communities, even as it is discouraged in many other countries, including Orthodox Christian ones. "And after the four hundred and thirty years, on that very same day, all the hosts of the Lord went out of the land of Egypt." Clearly the same day on which they had gone down — let us say, for example, the first of March of such and such a year; then four hundred and thirty years later, on the same day of that year, after those four hundred and thirty years —
— they came out of Egypt. "This is a night to be kept unto the Lord." Scripture does not forget that this great slaughter took place and this exodus from there, "because He brought them out of the land of Egypt. This is that night of the Lord, to be kept by all the children of Israel throughout their generations. And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: This is the law of the Pascha." Everything I have given you, everything I told you to do and so on, is gathered together in the law of the Pascha. "No foreigner shall eat of it" — of the Pascha. No foreigner.
"But every servant bought with money" — a slave who has been redeemed, paid for, not a Hebrew, not an Israelite — "when you have circumcised him, then shall he eat of it." You know, circumcision was what reconciled a person with God. Every circumcised person was regarded from then on as having a relationship with God. God had given this commandment first to Abraham, as we read in Genesis. Anyone uncircumcised had no relationship with God, and he was not even permitted to eat the Pascha, as you see here. And He commands that he first be circumcised. This too is something symbolic. Circumcision was done like this: they cut away from the male member the excess in front. There is blood in it, and that is how it was accomplished.
Sin is transmitted through birth, through the seed — "in iniquities was I conceived, and in sins did my mother bear me" — and this cutting away lets us understand that. The damage, death — that is what has to be cut off. This is a type, as Paul writes to the Colossians: circumcision is a type of Baptism. Consider how it was then with the circumcision on the eighth day: the child became a friend of God without being asked. Did they ask the child on whom they performed circumcision whether he wanted God? They did not ask him. Yet that child was reckoned a friend of God. Exactly the same thing happens today with infant baptism. Because many object and say, "I don't want to be baptised; my father is baptising me, he is forcing me." Where is that written?
That is the way of it, and that is the theology of the question. They did not ask the child, and yet they said from the start that he belongs to God's household. He is not outside the blessing. So here too we can put the same question. This is a matter that costs you nothing at all if you are going to throw your Baptism away. We might say: if my parents baptised me, what am I to reckon it, when I come of age? These objections are not really the issue. The issue lies elsewhere: why should it be done at all? And what does happen? The person himself is harmed, and so is the other one who gives in to his will. It is the evil one who does not want this thing to happen. And that is exactly what is going on, though in essence it amounts to nothing. Here it says: when he has been circumcised, then he may eat the Pascha. Holy Scripture says, "A stranger and a hired servant shall not eat of it," because they have no share in circumcision.
"In one house shall it be eaten" — you shall not carry any of the flesh out of the house. You are not to carry it anywhere; inside the house, and there it is to be eaten. "And you shall not break a bone of it." Now think about what that means in practice. For no bone to be broken, the lamb must not be cut up into pieces, it must not be carved. So this is proof that the lamb was not put whole into a pot to be boiled, and it was not chopped up to be cooked. It was roasted whole over the fire, as the text says — on a spit, as we would say today, roasted whole. And I gave you an example of this the other day.
To take a spit and set it upright, you have a cross: a piece of wood, an upright post, and at the back another piece by which you turn it round and round — you have a cross. So take that spit, that shape of a cross, put it in at my head and bring it out at my feet, stand me upright and stretch out my arms, and you will see Christ crucified. Put the lamb on it, run it from the head and out the other end, and open out its legs, and you will see the Lamb of God crucified. This is a type of the Crucifixion of Jesus — a foreshadowing of it. This lamb points ahead from many angles to the fact that it is about the Lamb of God. And here it says that not one bone of it shall be broken. And you remember what is said back there in John, chapter nineteen.
It records that when the Crucifixion of Christ took place, this was fulfilled, because at the same time another prophecy was also fulfilled, which said, "Not a bone of Him shall be broken," and, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced." So this shows exactly how the matter stands.
"After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, 'I thirst.'" David had spoken of this: "They gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink." "Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, 'It is finished,' and He bowed His head and gave up the spirit." Then the Jews, so that the bodies should not remain on the Cross on the Sabbath — of the two thieves, clearly, and of Christ — because it was the Preparation, and that Sabbath was a great day, asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. They wanted them to die an hour sooner, to be thrown down from there, so that they themselves could go and eat their Pascha. Before the sun went down. They were very clean about everything else — only this was missing. So the soldiers came, and they broke the legs of the first thief, and of the other who was crucified with Him; but when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. Instead one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. "And he who saw it has borne witness" — John was standing there, it seems, and he saw it —
"and his witness is true. And he knows that he tells the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled: 'Not a bone of Him shall be broken.'" That is exactly what it says here: "And you shall not break a bone of it." So then, that lamb was a type of the Lamb of God, who would be crucified fifteen hundred years later on Golgotha. And again Holy Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced" — the one whom the Roman soldier struck, and out came blood and water. Here, when we set the events of the old Exodus side by side with the events here, we can see the correspondences.
Something else also shows through here. The divinity of Jesus shows through, and the love of Jesus for mankind. Where does it show? It shows in the manner of His death. Where it says, "When He had said, 'It is finished,' and had bowed His head, He gave up the spirit." He did not die here as a man dies; He died as God. As God — because a man gives up his spirit and then his head drops; but Christ bowed His head first, and then gave up the spirit. That is to say, He died at the hour He chose, so that the others would not get there in time to break His legs — so that He might be the one pointed out, so that the prophecy might be fulfilled in His own person: "Not a bone of Him shall be broken."
These are the correspondences, and this is why Christ says, "I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfil the law." To fulfil it and to complete it — that has its own interpretation. I fulfil, and I fill it out. So from this His love for mankind is also proved: that willingly He gave Himself for the salvation of mankind. So here we have the foreshadowing of that great event, which was outlined back there beforehand with prophecies, with images, with symbols, with everything, so that people might be able to see the person of Jesus and recognise Him. So that He would not slip past them unnoticed — because, as it turns out, there is no salvation outside the person of Jesus.
That sacrifice which God sent Abraham to make up there — Golgotha, today's Golgotha, is Moriah of that time, the place where Abraham went to sacrifice Isaac. There are the three little hills, exactly; the spot where Isaac was offered is forty paces, or less, thirty paces from the spot where Christ was offered. There are three little peaks. On one of them, then, Isaac was offered, and the place is preserved to this day where Isaac was offered by Abraham. And a little way off is the place where Christ was crucified, where Christ was offered, and He took the place of the image that had gone before. And you see.
It is prefigured back then: God the Father sacrifices His only Son, His only-begotten, His beloved — "He gave His only-begotten Son" — and He sacrifices Him on Moriah, upon the wood of the Cross which He Himself carried. Just as Abraham, eighteen hundred years earlier, sacrifices on Moriah his own beloved only-begotten son, upon the wood which the boy himself carried. Because Scripture tells us that when they had walked part of the way, he told them to unload. And the boy is loaded with the wood, and the boy carried the wood, and there was a conversation along the road. "My father, behold, here am I with the wood."
"Here is the knife and the fire — but where is the lamb for the offering?" And the elder answers and says, "God will provide for Himself a lamb. Come along." And now they go up, and they climb up there. And he sets him down; they build the form of the altar, and he lays Isaac upon it. You know, the Lord came willingly, He was offered willingly — our Church proclaims that He came to His voluntary Passion, to the suffering He willed. He could have escaped from the Jews. How many times did He not slip out of their hands when they wanted to throw Him off a cliff, or stone Him there, and so on? And He got away — even when they went to seize Him in the garden.
He struck them with a vision, and they all fell down like wilted cabbages. He says, "Come — why do you draw back? Is it Me you are looking for? Yes, take Me, here I am; let these men go." He could have gone. But Christ came willingly, to be crucified. Now take the scene — since we are speaking of this scene, I put it before you as a parallel — take the scene of the elder Abraham, and take the scene of the young Isaac. For Isaac to be able to carry wood, and a whole load of wood at that, enough for him to be sacrificed upon it, he has to be at least eighteen, twenty, twenty-two, twenty-five years old; he cannot be some little child of five. Is it possible now that an elder, roughly over a hundred years old, could seize that young man, put him down, throw him and drag him twenty metres back? You are mistaken! What nonsense you are talking now! And yet — he did put him down! Willingly!
Of his own will he offered himself. And when the elder raised his hand to take off his head, then he heard the voice behind him, and it said to him: "Abraham, hold back your hand — do not slay him, do not sacrifice him, it accomplishes nothing. It was the type I wanted you to make for Me. His blood accomplishes nothing. I have My own lamb, slain from the foundation of the world." Go and read where the Apocalypse — the Book of Revelation — says this. "Spare My lamb, and turn around and see where the voice is coming from." And he sees behind him a ram caught by the wood, tangled in a tree which is called Sabek, and which exists to this day. That tree is exactly on the second little hill opposite Golgotha. I have photographed it; it is there to this day, and it is called Sabek. It is a Hebrew word which is interpreted as "the tree of forgiveness."
As if He were saying to him: I have My own lamb, and one day, upon the wood of the Cross, upon the wood of forgiveness, His blood will be poured out. It is only the type I want you to make for Me in this case. Now, if a person knew the Old Testament well, as Paul knew it — Paul, who was always calling up the events of the Old Testament in order to apply them to the New Testament — he would have found things much easier, he would know a great deal about Christ, and he would do a great deal for his Saviour and for his fellow human beings. Of course Paul had a deep familiarity with the Old Testament, and he says himself that he was a zealot. And he was educated at the feet of Gamaliel, the man called the teacher of the law, and you can see clearly how well he knew the Old Testament and all these types and symbols that were there.
Look at the Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews, when he comes to make his defence and to write to his own countrymen: "Notice this, notice that, notice the other thing," and so on. And especially the passage where he gathers together all the types that took place inside the Holy Place, the Holy of Holies, and so on. There he shows clearly how well Paul knew the Old Testament. Well, something of this sort is happening here too, in what I have been reading to you this evening — and with that let me close this part.
Let me add a little more. It says: "All the congregation of Israel shall do this" — everyone. "And if a stranger sojourns with you" — a foreigner is staying near you in those days — "let all his males be circumcised." Sojourning with you. "And he wishes to keep the Pascha to the Lord" — he wants to accept what you yourselves are doing — "let all his males be circumcised." Why does it say nothing about the woman? Because the woman does not bear responsibility for ancestral sin. Ancestral sin is transmitted through the seed; ancestral sin is transmitted from the man. Thank you.
"Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob" — it does not mention Sarah, it does not mention Rebecca, and where it says Judah begot his sons it does not say Leah or Rachel — because it is from the man's seed that ancestral sin is carried over, and death with it. The seed even of the holiest man is dead; it brings forth a person stamped with death. That is why we come to Baptism and rise again, all of us who believe in Christ. It says here: if someone says, I want to be with you and stays with you, and he too wishes to keep the Pascha to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and go along with them too. "And he shall be as one born in the land" — that is, like one of your own people — "for no uncircumcised person shall eat of it."
As we would say today: no unbaptised person shall partake of it. And as you know, the Orthodox Church gives Holy Communion to no unbaptised person — not even to a small child, not even at the very end, not to anyone who has not been baptised. This is also why the early Church baptised in the morning; it did not baptise at just any hour, the way people baptise now, even though in fact any hour is suitable for Baptism. The Eunuch was baptised at one hour, others were baptised at another — the seven hundred, the three hundred, the three thousand and so on who were baptised by the Apostles.
This Church, from the very beginning, baptised in the morning, at dawn, and the newly baptised stayed and received Holy Communion — because the purpose of Baptism is to bury the old man and to bring forward a new one, cleansed and able to receive from Christ. You see: they say of the side, "it was pierced, and out came blood and water" — Baptism and Holy Communion. The side of Christ is Eve, the side of Adam; Eve, who was pierced by Satan and brought forth death; and here now is the new side of the new Adam, and through Baptism and Holy Communion He undoes the death which she produced, and that piercing by Satan back then. These things are all connected. That is why it says, no uncircumcised person shall eat of it. "One law shall there be"
"for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you" — one law will apply. That is, once you are united in religion, nothing else plays any part; let one keep it and let the other keep it too. "And all the children of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron; so did they. And on that very same day the Lord brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, according to their hosts."
Here the Lord laid down another law as well, which even today is still partly in force. You see, when a woman gives birth, we say she is going to be churched at forty days. Our Most Holy Theotokos did this very thing herself. When she gave birth, after forty days she went to the temple. She took Christ and also made the offering that was customary then, which He had given as a law. They would sacrifice: anyone who brought his male child to the temple had to make the following sacrifice and a symbolic act as well. If he was a man whose purse allowed it, he had to take a lamb and a dove, or a turtledove.
He would go, he would slaughter the lamb, he would take blood from the lamb and sprinkle the dove with it, and then he would let that dove fly away free. This was a type, a foreshadowing: that the blood of the lamb would allow the soul to be set free, that it would set the soul free. If, on the other hand, he did not have the money to buy a lamb, for example, then he had to bring either a pair of turtledoves or a pair of pigeons. And that is clearly what we see with Joseph and the Theotokos (the God-bearer), that pairing of theirs — not a couple in the sense we use the word today. They were poor, so they took a pair of turtledoves; they sacrificed one of the turtledoves and anointed the other with its blood,
and then they let the other one go free. It was a type, a foreshadowing of how the soul of a human being would be set free from Satan only through blood. This law — well, today of course we no longer have the sacrifice, but everything else still happens. The woman goes to the Church, she is churched after forty days, and the Meeting of the Lord, the Hypapante, takes place. The priest, like another Symeon the God-receiver, comes forward at the door and carries the child inside. Back then there was also this, which we no longer have today: if the child was female, not male, the mother would come after eighty days. The woman was considered doubly unclean, so she would come at eighty days — without a sacrifice, of course. The sacrifice was offered only for the children, only for the boys, only for the firstborn. And here Scripture writes this law down; it writes it out next.
"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Consecrate to Me every firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and of beast; it is Mine." So they had to bring the firstborn to God, because the firstborn had been spared, thanks to that law which God Himself had laid down. They had been spared at that time, and so it was held that they had to be given back to God. In any case, Moses says: "Remember this day, on which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, for the Lord brought you out from there with a mighty hand. No leavened bread shall be eaten today; you are going out in the month of Abib."
Keep this in your memory always — what God did for you. We do not value this thing we call Pascha nearly enough. We do not really know what was done for us, what Pascha actually is. We have made this Pascha of ours into something else; we have shut it up inside good company, a good meal, a lamb on the spit, a bonus we are going to get, a day off work, whatever it may be — and nothing beyond that. We hold a candle too, we say "Christ is Risen," we go and stand outside the Church and take the light — but deep inside we know only that this is something symbolic for us: that this sacrifice of the Lamb of God took us out from the spiritual Pharaoh, to bring us across into the Promised Land, just as it took the Hebrews out from the physical Pharaoh back then and brought them across into the Promised Land.
In any case, we will stop here, because our time is up, and God willing we will continue next time.

η αμαρτία μεταδίεται δια της νησίας, δια του σπέρματος, ενανομή εις νελίσιν και εναμαρτίες εγγενισθέ σε ημίτευση, αφήνει να εννοηθεί μόνο νέμα αυτό το περιπτό. Η ζημιά, το θάνατο, θα τον νησίσει! Αυτό είναι δεκατεστάθεια όπως γράφει ο Παύλος του Λασαΐης, η περιτονία δεκατεστάθεια του βαπτίσματος. Πώς είχε το τότε η περιτομή των οκτώ ημερών που το παιδί έγινε το φίλος του Θεού χωρίς να ρωτηθεί. Το ρωτούσαν το παιδί που του κάνατε την περιτομή αν θέλει, στον Θεό, δεν το ρωτούσαν. Όμως το παιδί αυτό εθεωρείτο ως φίλος του Θεού. Αυτό τούτο συμβαίνει σήμερα με τον νηπιοβαπτισμό. Γιατί πολλοί διεκτείνονται και λένε ότι εγώ δεν θέλω να βαφτιστώ, γιατί με βαφτίζει ο πατέρας μου και με εκβιάζει. Πού το λέει αυτό;
