Summary

The fifth homily in the series recalls that seventy souls went down into Egypt and, after 430 years, a nation of some 600,000 men besides children came out through the Red Sea toward the Promised Land, while today Christians refuse to multiply. The blood struck on the two doorposts and the lintel marks three places in the name of the Holy Trinity, and the destroying angel passes over wherever that blood is seen. The lamb is eaten whole with head, feet and entrails and is roasted on a spit that forms a cross, showing that the communicant receives the whole Christ rather than a portion, and that deliverance from the noetic Pharaoh comes by the blood of the Lamb and not by one's own works.

I see from my notes here that we left off at a point that is very interesting, and it is in fact the point that reminds us of a great deal, and all of us need to know it. For those of you who happened not to be at the other talks, I would like to tell you that this talk has to do with the people of Israel: how they came to be in Egypt, and how God brought this people out of Egypt through the Red Sea, toward the Promised Land. About seventy people went down there into Egypt.

Then, four hundred and thirty years later, three million people came out. They did not have small families back then, and people were willing to be co-workers with God and to bring forth immortal fruit, because the human being is something immortal. A human being. Everything else a person makes is mortal; only the human being is not. But Satan, who hates the human being, God's own creature, and who cannot lay a hand on God Himself, since he was already punished for his pride, has scattered these ideas abroad today, as you know, and people are not multiplying. Not all people, but Christians.

He lets the others multiply, because they do not concern him; but Christians, because they are baptised and because they will remain far from him for eternity, these he hates, and so today we have no increase. This sin, of course, is deadly; it is great, it is unforgivable, I would even say, unless there is sincere metanoia, that is, real repentance, in word and in deed. Now we have reached the point where Pharaoh will not, under any circumstances, out of self-interest, send away those he is holding there, because Egypt's economy would be shaken if so many thousands of hands went away, hands that work for him night and day for nothing.

If you followed the last two talks, since this is the fifth in the series, you saw that God permitted various plagues to come upon Pharaoh, to force his hand. For a moment he would repent, just as we repent and make all sorts of promises in our hard moments; but once we are out of danger, once the nightmare has passed, once our trial has passed, once the thing that was pressing us hard is gone, we forget, we take it back, we harden ourselves against what we promised, against what we pledged, and we go looking for a priest to release us from the vow we made so that we will not have to keep it. Pharaoh did exactly this sort of thing, and instead of his heart softening, his heart was hardened.

That was carelessness on his part, because he was not dealing with a man; he was dealing with God. Now here we come to Pharaoh's tenth plague, the most effective one. This tenth plague has to do with us as well, with the manner of our salvation. Listen to what happened, so that they might finally leave officially. Evangelism by force, as we were saying. These events I am reading to you now are in the twelfth chapter of Exodus. It says: And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt. You see, He gives them a civil ruler, Moses, and a religious ruler, the high priest of Israel.

A ruler of the state and a ruler of the Church. So He said to these two: This month, He says, shall be to you the beginning of months. It will be reckoned as the first of the months. It shall be to you the first month of the year. That is, April. It seems there were two months at that time that were kept as the start of the year, and now, apart from the first one they already had, He gives them this one. It will be a month you will always remember all your life, because of an event that is about to take place. Now, we too have two new-year days. We have a civil new year on the first of the year, and we also have a new year...

an ecclesiastical one, on the first of September. The beginning of the Indiction. I do not know whether you have noticed these things: that the Church year begins on the first of September. Your calendar of feasts, your Synopsis, your Synekdemos does not begin on the first of January. It begins on the first of September and ends on the thirty-first of August. So it is here too. Speak, then, you two, Moses and Aaron, to all the congregation of Israel, to all the people who are scattered here throughout Egypt, saying: On the tenth of this month, that is, on the tenth day of this month, let each of them take for himself a lamb, a young one; let them take one lamb each on the tenth of the month, according to the houses of their fathers, one

lamb for each household.

But if those in the house are too few for the lamb, obviously they are going to roast it and eat it, but two people cannot eat a whole lamb, then, it says, let them join together with their neighbours and gather together to eat this lamb. This, as it says again, if it is very... No, precisely this. The other one is not a mistake of my own. Let him and his neighbour, the one nearest his house, take it according to the number of souls. Each of you shall count himself in for the lamb according to what is enough for him to eat. Beloved, what I said first, that if the lamb is large they will take it and

more people will join in, from the neighbourhood or relatives, to eat it together. And your lamb shall be perfect, male, a year old, from the sheep. And you shall keep it until the fourteenth of the same month. That is, we are to keep it for five days. Ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. Five days. And when, and you shall keep it, it says, until the fourteenth of the same month, and then the whole multitude of the congregation of Israel shall slay it toward evening. That is, around the time of Vespers, in the late afternoon, they shall slay

the lamb, the whole house of Israel; that is, all the Israelites will slay the lamb they had taken on the tenth of the month. Do you know what this is? This is Christ here, who likewise entered on Palm Sunday and remained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, five days, and was slain toward evening. Pay attention to the sequence and to the details. And they shall take of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the door of the houses where they shall eat it. They will gather the blood, and with this blood they will wet, they will sprinkle, their doors. On two places, on this side and on that, and on the upper part. This is the blood of Christ, and it is in the name of the Holy Trinity: in three places, it says, it does not say four, nor one, but three places. Why this is to be done He says further on: because on that night an angel will pass through Egypt and will strike down all the firstborn of the Egyptians. And so that he makes no mistake, listen, wherever he sees blood, he will not go in. He will not destroy wherever he sees the blood of the lamb. So if you want to make sure your children are not killed, see to it that you slay a lamb, that you gather the blood,

and that you wet the doorposts of your houses, so that you are not in danger. Here He is speaking of what the blood of Christ would accomplish, and that the person who dips, who sprinkles his soul with the blood of the Lamb, does not fear the destroying death that comes from God. All of this is symbolic. It has to do with the exodus of the Egyptians, of the Israelites, out of Egypt on their way to the Promised Land, and it has to do with our own exodus from here to the Promised Land. Since exodus, forgive me, Pascha means exodus; Pascha means crossing over; Pascha means passing through. That is why He calls what He tells them to do a Pascha. And the word Pascha is not something we came up with just now when we keep Pascha. Pascha is a Hebrew word, and it goes back to when God gave this commandment, that this event should take place so that an occasion might be found for His people to come out of there. Listen to how it goes on. And they shall eat the flesh that night, roasted with fire. This meat, He says, they will eat roasted over the fire. They will not eat it boiled. They will not eat it cooked some other way. The spit goes back to that time.

It is a Hebrew product; it has existed from then until today. We did not invent it, we received it. We simply changed the Pascha. We do not have a Pascha only with a lamb; we have a Pascha with the Lamb of God. Because the person who only eats the meat of a lamb is not keeping Pascha. The one who truly keeps Pascha is the one who feeds on the Lamb of God, on Christ, who partakes of the body and the blood of Christ. That is the one who keeps Pascha. You shall eat it, He says, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs. Do not eat it, however, boiled in water, but roasted with fire. Eat it, He says, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. You know what unleavened means; you know what leaven is: it is sin.

Without leaven, without sin, you shall eat this lamb. This is the answer to those who commune without having gone to confession, who say they are sinless, that they have nothing on them, that they have not murdered and have not stolen. They have none of the marks of repentance, and with the leaven of wickedness and malice they come forward to the Calf. They come forward to the Lamb; they come forward to the Table. Such things deserve the penalty of death. Leaven was forbidden. It had to leave the house for eight days, from the first day until the eighth. Pascha lasts eight days. It is not one day, as we make it. It is eight. Our old people used to say: three at the Nativity, three at Theophany, and six at the Resurrection. That is, the feast of Christmas lasts three days,

the feast of Theophany lasts three days, the feast of the Resurrection lasts six days, or rather the feast of the Resurrection lasts eight days, because they counted Bright Week, and they were not counting Pascha itself and Thomas Sunday, the Sunday after Pascha; that makes eight days. These people had a commandment from God to remove the leaven from the house. They ate, how shall I put it, what we eat on Clean Monday: unleavened bread, like lagana, unleavened, with no leaven in it. Paul says the same thing elsewhere; if you read First Corinthians, he says that Christ our Pascha was sacrificed for us, and that we should not be leavened with sins, but unleavened, that we should be clean in order to eat of Him. So that is where this pattern comes from, all the way back. Do not eat it raw, He says, nor boiled in water.

So it follows that when our Christ ate His Pascha, He did not eat that Pascha of the Hebrews; He ate His own Pascha. So then, about Christ. Christ also had bread when He dipped the morsel. He says, who is it that will betray You, Lord? The one to whom I shall dip and give the bread. It is not called bread otherwise; bread is what is made with yeast. That is, how do we say it, with leaven, so that it rises, it rises and swells up, that is, it puffs up. The morsel that I shall give. And there was broth as well, which shows that He dipped it into the dish, He dipped it into the plate and gave it to him; whereas roasted things have no broth. Consequently, Christ did not eat their Pascha, the Pascha of the Hebrews, and by extension, consequently, the Roman Catholics do not have

the right of it on their side. The right of it is with us, who put leavened bread in Holy Communion and not unleavened bread, as they do. Because if Christ had eaten the Passover on Holy Thursday evening and not on Friday evening, when it was appointed for the lamb to be slain and everything else to be done, that would have been enough to put Him in the dock for transgressing the Mosaic law and to find Him a sinner. But Christ did not eat their Pascha; He ate His own Pascha, a new Pascha, in His own way, with leavened bread, with food, with broth, and all the rest. He was seated, whereas they were not permitted to be seated when they kept that Pascha. If anyone wants to read the details, he can read them right here, and he can compare what takes place in the Orthodox Church with what takes place in the so-called Papal or Western Church, and there he will discover that...

the truth is with us and the error is with them. Now listen to another detail. Do not eat it raw, He says, nor boiled in water, and so on, but roasted with fire; its head with its legs and with its entrails. And you shall leave nothing of it until the morning. And whatever remains of it until the morning you shall burn with fire. This lamb, He says, you shall not separate from its legs; you shall leave its legs on it. You shall not take out its entrails; of course you will wash them, and you will leave the entrails there. You shall not cut off its head; you will clean it, of course, but the head stays there. That is, it will be whole. He commanded them to eat it whole, with the legs, with the head, with the entrails, with everything. And that is exactly the way we

receive Communion. We do not commune a body and a blood of Christ, as some careless priests say. Someone will ask, what do we commune then? We commune the body and the blood of Christ. Not body and blood, but the body and the blood. That little word, the, absolutely has to be there. The. And when he tells you, the servant of God partakes of body and blood, that would mean some part of Him, from His side, from His neck, from His foot, from the hand of God, some of the body. No, not some of the body: the body, the whole body and the whole blood of Christ. However small, however infinitesimally tiny that little piece is that the priest or the bishop or the deacon

gives us, within it is the whole Christ, from His head to His fingertips. We commune the head of Christ, the feet of Christ, the inward parts of Christ, the tender mercies of Christ, the whole Christ. That is, whatever properties Christ has, He imparts them to the believer, all of them, every one. That is what is so telling here. You shall not take off its legs, He says, you shall not throw away its intestines, you shall not cut off its head; you shall leave it whole. And in order for it to be roasted, to be cooked, and since He says you must not cut it up, obviously they did not lay it on the coals; they put it on a spit, they put it on a skewer. Now think about that spit. You are Orthodox; we do not know these things, nor do you pay attention to them. Take a lamb, slaughter it as we say, wash it, clean it, and so on.

And take a spit as well. Now think how many Hebrews there were — three million people. Excuse me: three million in all, but six hundred thousand men, not counting the children. That is the figure; it says so further on. So those households ran, and of course one cut a branch from a cypress, another from some other tree, another from a pine, and they made themselves something like a spit. And for a spit to be a spit, for you to be able to work it — obviously they did not all go off to the blacksmith to have iron ones made, the permanent ones we have nowadays and keep in our homes.

a piece of wood; they bored a hole at the back end, they did whatever they did to it, they fitted another piece into it, and with that piece they turned it round little by little and roasted the lamb. And if you pick that thing up and look at it, you will see that it is a cross. The spit lying there, and a crosspiece fitted on top so you can turn it — you will see that it forms a cross. Now put that spit through the lamb's head and bring it out below, the way they skewer them, and stand it upright. Spread the two front legs open, and you have Christ crucified. Because man himself is a type of Christ, a foreshadowing of Christ; man is shaped in the form of the Cross. Now take the spit at the head, take it for the lamb they pierce through,

you put it in here and bring it out at the feet, and you open the front legs as well — my arms, my legs, like this. What do you have? You have Christ. The lamb we roast on the spit is the type, the foreshadowing, given to the Hebrews, and what it foreshadows is Christ, and He wants to give us this so that we understand it. So this Christ, He says, you must receive whole. You will eat Him whole, His head and His feet as well; otherwise you will be wild animals, and one will devour the other. Which is exactly what has happened today. If we live in a jungle today, why is that? Because people do not receive Holy Communion.

That is the whole reason. A person does not commune with God, so that his nature can be changed — so that he becomes incapable of wronging anyone, incapable of stealing, incapable of dishonouring anyone, incapable of killing his own children. So that he can no longer think the way he thinks, but thinks the way God wants. That is what is missing from the middle of it all. In any case, He says the leftovers are not to be thrown away. You will burn them somewhere, you will dispose of them somewhere. It is like today, when the priest consumes what remains; he does not leave it. And you shall eat it, He says, in the manner I have told you: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste, with attention, just as I told you; it is the Lord's Passover. This is the first time the word Pascha is heard — one thousand four hundred and fifty years before Christ.

the word Pascha for the first time. And why all of this? Because on that night I will pass through the land of Egypt, and I will strike every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from man to beast. That is to say, if there were no children in a house, an animal was struck. By morning, throughout the whole of Egypt, there had to be one endless funeral, one endless graveyard — not a single house without a death in it, either of an animal or of a person. And I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt; I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a sign upon the houses

where you are, He says; the blood will be a sign on the houses you live in. And when I see the blood I will pass over you; I will not enter that house through My angel. And the plague will not come upon you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. So here, as I told you, is the tenth plague, and it is the one that has to do with our own Pascha, with the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt, and with our own deliverance from the noetic Pharaoh, the Pharaoh of the spirit. Exactly the same terms apply today to every person who wants to be saved from the hands of the noetic Pharaoh. Unfortunately, we do not take that noetic Pharaoh as seriously as we should.

we do not reckon with him. Not only do we fail to reckon with him and to treat him as an enemy, but many times we actually wish him well, sending him his own people, our own people, our belongings and the rest. You send something to the devil. Do you understand? The tool is at fault, so you send it to the devil. The goat is at fault, so you send it to the devil. Somebody else — your wife, your husband, your child — you send them to the devil. You are wishing that his kingdom may increase. And if someone happens to be asked, ‘Do you ever blaspheme, my friend?' — ‘No, sometimes I let fly, but I don't blaspheme.' And indeed he is not blaspheming. Because when a person sends someone to the devil, he is not blaspheming. He is wishing the devil well. Nor is he cursing the devil when he says that. Sometimes you say you're cursing the devil — that's not true. God you blaspheme; the devil you are blessing, you are wishing him well: I send you my mother-in-law,

my child, I send you my sheepfold, my wife, my neighbour, my possessions. You are wishing Satan well. You are Satan's agent. You blaspheme; you blaspheme God, you blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos, you blaspheme the Cross, you blaspheme Christ — and Satan you bless. That is what we do, and we take no account of it. So then, how will you escape from his hands? Only through the blood of the Lamb. The blood of the Lamb is what will turn aside the wrath of God; it will say, further on, ‘there is blood here.' He does not say that whoever is righteous, whoever is good, whoever fasts from oil and so on, will escape. Blood is what is needed, He says; blood on the doorpost. Because many people take their rest in their own works: I fast, I do a good deed, I do this and that — and they receive Holy Communion once in a while, or not at all. And if they do receive, they receive for the sake of good wishes and a little keepsake. They do not treat it as absolutely necessary that their soul be cleansed and marked with the blood of Christ.

We must hold this as absolute, since the blood of Christ is what cleanses us from every sin on the one hand, and on the other puts us in order and guarantees that we are in no danger from that destroying sword of God's justice. This is what is called the tenth plague, and it was indeed the effective one. For God arranged it and set it up in such a way that on the following day they were all reeling; they could not take in what had come upon them or what had happened. If bells had been tolled for mourning back then, they would have had to toll day and night, because there was not a single house without someone to bury, as I told you — either a person or an animal.

we ourselves would have to die — and instead He gives salvation to man. Man's freedom comes through Jesus, through His blood. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin. Every other blood defiles; the blood of Jesus cleanses. That is an astonishing thing. No one can say what that blood costs. And today it stays inside the Holy Chalice, to Satan's delight. It is not given to the faithful. Either they do not take it, or they are put off by certain clergy who do not know their calling — for the Holy Spirit changes the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood. They are of the opinion that this happens for them alone. They imitate the Pharisee: you are all publicans, only I

should receive Communion. That is wrong. They ought not to be putting obstacles in our way at all; on the contrary, they ought to be preparing us, teaching us, and doing it under penalty of excommunication: if you come to church and do not receive Communion, I have the right to excommunicate you, on the basis of the Apostolic Canons and the Canons of the Synods. And then a person would pull himself together, he would be careful, and he would not shut Holy Communion away for years on end, for Pascha or Christmas only. And he would come to know what it is about, because at the same time he would feel how great the worth of Holy Communion is and how great a help it is to him. Because if a person does not taste the sweetness of the honey himself, then however much you tell him honey is good, he does not know how good it is or what it is.

He has to put his finger in, put a fingerful in his mouth, to understand what honey is. That is why in one of the Psalms — Psalm 34, which is Psalm 33 in the Greek Old Testament — our Lord says in one place, ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good.' Try it, He says, and see. And the Greek word there is chrestos with an eta, ‘good, useful' — not Christos with an iota. The Lord is good for you, He is necessary to you, you have need of Him. And if people commit suicide today, and if people do things today that not even wild animals do, they do them for lack of Christ — for lack of Christ. They do not have the strength of Christ, they do not have the grace, the illumination of Christ. That is precisely why they live as they live. They live as though they were permanent fixtures of the earth, when they are not permanent at all but only passing through. They live

as though they were settled inhabitants of the earth, when they are not inhabitants at all — and a thousand and one other things that one day send a person to Hell, because for the most part he is unprepared, and especially today, with all the fine, modern, easy deaths that man has invented and piled up on his own head. He hardly knows whether he will get home; he gets into his car and does not know where they will pick him up from; he gets on a plane and does not know what fish he will feed. There are so many ways today for a person to leave this life and die, and consequently the need is multiplied to have the ticket in your hand at every moment. People take their rest in their own works. But God did not say that the good people of the household would be saved and would not be destroyed by the destroying sword of the angel

because they had done good works — but those who have blood outside, He says. The blood of the lamb that they have outside. That is the point. The justice of God is entreated by one thing only: the blood of Christ. That is why the whole Liturgy — perhaps you have never noticed this — is directed to God the Father. All the prayers of the Liturgy are not addressed to Christ. We offer Christ in sacrifice and we hold Christ up before the Father, so that we ourselves may be spared. Through the compassions of Christ, through the compassions of Thine Only-Begotten Son, do not consume us, do not destroy us. In the whole of the Divine Liturgy there are only two prayers addressed to Christ, and those were added later on. All the others are addressed to God the Father through Jesus Christ.

One of them, of course, is the one said while the Cherubic Hymn is being chanted, which the priest says inwardly on his own behalf, praying: ‘No one bound by carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach or draw near or minister to Thee,' and so on. That is the one, added later. And the other is the one said just before ‘Let us attend. The Holy Things are for the holy,' in which he says, ‘O Thou who sittest on high with the Father and art here invisibly present with us.' It is a prayer asking that by the Lord's mighty hand the priest himself may receive Communion — that God may be placed in the priest's hand — and through me to all the people. Through me may all the people receive Communion from what lies upon the Holy Table. The righteousness of man is as a filthy rag, as the holy Prophet Isaiah says.

And what does that filthy rag mean? A cloth soiled with a woman's monthly blood. That is the kind of filth that man's own righteousness is in the eyes of God. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that gives a person worth in God's eyes. I remember the other day, on Saturday morning, before I left America — it was the feast of Saint Catherine, on the twenty-fifth — and just as I was coming down from the pulpit after preaching, my last homily, I looked to the door far down at the back, for these are big churches, enormous. I saw a married couple, and they came in. And then they went over to one side and stood there, and someone welcomed them, and they were talking.

It emerged afterwards that they had come from a hundred and fifty miles away, that is, two hundred and something kilometres. Their relative had telephoned them to come and hear at least one homily. And they were travelling two hundred and something kilometres to hear a homily. It is as though you set out from Akrata, or from Patras, to come to Athens to hear a homily. But that day they were late; it seems they had no car of their own — in any case, it came to the same thing. So these people came, and at the end they received Communion; the priest gave Communion and then distributed the antidoron, the blessed bread given out after the Liturgy. And afterwards they came, and he introduced this couple to me, and said, this is how it is, and so on. And they come from far away, and, sir, they have a problem — and you could see the sorrow on her face, it was plain to see. And he began to tell me, very delicately, how far they had come and how thirsty they were, and everything else.

and I stood there and spoke with them for twenty-five minutes, standing, with these two people and the third one there. It struck me — if only I had had a tape to record the thing. At every word of mine he would turn and look at his wife, and his wife would look at him. I put it to them plainly: all of you Americans here are good people, but you are all going to Hell. And the two of them turned and looked at each other. You are people of good works, I said. Such people you are. But you do not receive Holy Communion. And if you do receive, you receive without having gone to Holy Confession. And they turned and looked at each other. In those twenty-five minutes that I was speaking to them, perhaps it hit them hard, but all of it weighed on them. And each one looked at the other: what is this we are hearing? What have we been doing here for forty years?

We are considered the best people in the district, and all we have been doing is preparing our own Hell. Do you know how many people lie asleep on their own works, because they see so-called Christians, people who even receive Communion and come to church, doing the very opposite? They take that and say, ‘At least I don't receive Communion, I don't go to priests, I don't confess — but I don't do what that other man does either.' And so in his own eyes he is justified and he sleeps peacefully, when in fact both of them will end up in the same place; the one will go and the other will go too. Because the commandment is: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. You will confess and you will receive Communion often, and you will not do evil, the ugly things; you will not destroy your own child, you will not steal, you will not live off another man's sweat, and all the rest of what that so-called Christian does. Do not use him as your excuse: ‘Lord, I never did that.' You never did that — but you never did what I told you to do either. I never told you that if you receive Communion you may steal, dishonour people, wrong people, refuse to have children. I never told you that. I told you to do both. These ought ye to have done,

and not to leave the other undone. He said it. Read the Woes that are read on Great Tuesday evening, in the twenty-third chapter of Matthew, and you will find all these things there. So this is what happens to many people; today they rest on their laurels — and how many of them have never confessed and never communed. It is not that there is no need for good works; but if man's salvation consisted of good works alone, God would have sent an angel on high with a great trumpet to announce to mankind that we should do good works, and He would bring us back to Paradise. Did He say that? No — He came Himself, He suffered, and He left Himself in the Church, in the inn, with the innkeepers, saying, whatever more you spend, I will come again and repay you. So many people are deceived on this point, and that is why we must pay attention to it. What gave them the safety to sleep peacefully that night was the blood that was there.

If there is something wrong in your soul, my friend — if it has not been marked with the blood of Christ — do not go to sleep. Go and find a confessor, make your confession, and receive the blood in Communion. If the blood of Christ is not the one thing needed to appease the justice of God, to drive off the fiery darts of Satan, and to put a ticket into a person's hand so that they can make the journey, then why should the Body and Blood of Christ be kept there on the Holy Table all year round, inside the artophorion, the vessel where the Holy Gifts are reserved? There would be no need for it. Why is it there? It is there as an emergency provision, to be given to a person so that they can travel. Otherwise they will not arrive; they will not finish the course. And where they ought to finish — or rather, the end of that road —

— it will either be the road of the funeral hymn that says, "Blessed is the way wherein you walk today," or else it will be an evil road, a corrupt road that you are walking today. So the very fact that the Body and Blood of Christ are kept there for the emergency needs of the faithful means that this alone is what makes it possible for a person to travel freely toward eternity and one day to reach the end of the road. It is the person's ticket, while their works are their suitcases, their luggage. People do not travel with luggage alone; they need a ticket as well. I planned to travel tomorrow, to go to Aigion, to Patras, and I went and got my ticket. I will take my suitcases too, but without a ticket they will not let me on board. What am I going to say to them — "I have suitcases"? "Your ticket, sir, and then take your suitcases too."

No, it does not work like that. People who stay far away from the Church are deceived. And the priests are deceived who do not give us the Body and Blood of Christ, and do not excommunicate us either, but hand out the antidoron to us instead — the blessed bread given out after the Liturgy. Woe to them on the day of judgment. They ought at least to remind us, to say to us: "Sir, why did you come to church? To turn your back on Christ?

To collect the antidoron?" The antidoron is a witness for the prosecution against you. Do you imagine the antidoron saves you? I could give you a whole basketful of it, and you would still go to Hell. I could give you Great Agiasmos, the great blessing of water — I could give you a ton of it — and you would still go to Hell. See to it that you receive the Blood and the Body of Christ, if you want to be saved. That is what I have to say to you, for my part. And the priest ought to come out and read a decree of excommunication: everyone who will not come on Sunday to receive Communion, or bring a paper from their confessor saying that they are bound by their confession and cannot commune, is excommunicated and bound.

— the face of the earth would change. When the Holy Chalice is uncovered, the face of the earth will change. We will not need social workers, we will not need lessons in savoir-vivre and good manners, we will not need any other fine advice — none of it. A person's very nature is changed. If a hundred gold coins are left in my hands, can I steal? Not only can I not steal, I will actually be afraid. I will want them to come quickly and take it all away, in case something goes missing and I get the blame. So how much less could I break into someone's house, wicked enough to go and take their things? He changes my nature. Can I lay a hand on another man's wife? Can I touch another person's belongings? When someone is a Christian, they cannot. A Christian trembles — not out of fear, but out of reverence. There are business owners here who have two, three, five children, and when they go away and leave the business,

they do not hand the keys and the running of it to their own children. They give them to some employee in the business who is a Christian. They do not put the key in their own child's hand, because they know he is a good-for-nothing who will take the money and be off with his girlfriend and the rest of it. So they give the management and the keys and everything else to a Christian employee they have there — because they know that a Christian cannot steal. Will Christ let them steal? They will give from their own pocket rather than take. He changes their nature. The sign says "No smoking" — do not smoke, never touch it. I do not smoke. That "no" is not for me. The "no" is not meant for me; the "no" is for the wicked, for the one who has not been born again. Because when a person takes their Christ into themselves, He changes their nature. Human nature is changed, my beloved.

I do not know which of you smoke — the ladies, the gentlemen. Ask Christ to give you the strength to give it up. From that very hour you will find it disgusting. According to reason and nature and science you ought to have to struggle for a whole year while your body detoxifies. Otherwise you will get dizzy, everything will close in on you, the light will go out in front of your eyes — because it is a drug; the body needs that fix, the nicotine. But when you ask the Most Holy Theotokos, you will find it disgusting, you will feel bad at the very thought of smoking. It will happen at once, that very moment. This is what Christ is. People know Him — and yet we watch the priest come out with the Holy Chalice still covered and without the communion spoon, certain that nobody is going to come forward. And then the lies begin: "We have seen the true light, we have received the heavenly Spirit."

What true light, and what heavenly Spirit? Really. Who are the people of God, and what is His inheritance? Those who have received Communion and become brothers and sisters of Christ. What is God's inheritance? Is it the people sitting up there smiling, or waiting to be given the antidoron so they can leave? That is not God's inheritance. God's inheritance is this: "The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in them. And I will raise them up on the last day." What is such a person? This is very telling. If only the faithful, or the clergy, would read these things and take some care to make Holy Communion more frequent, the face of the earth would change. There would be no need for fences, no need for guard dogs, no need for police, no need for an army — nothing would be needed. Nothing at all. No one would harm you. A Christian cannot injure another person, cannot wrong them. It is the evil one; it is the person who is far from Christ —

it is the wild olive tree that does the ugly things; the cultivated olive never does them. Whoever is grafted in — and it is easy, it is not difficult — allow me a word on this subject; let me describe how it is done. Take a bitter orange tree. Give it all the fertiliser you like, dig round it as much as you like, tend it, water it as much as you like, manure it as much as you like, prune it as much as you like. What will it produce? Bitter oranges. Yes or no? It will produce bitter oranges. Now take a penknife, go to its trunk, cut a cross in the bark, and slip in underneath a little bud taken from a sweet orange tree.

Fit it in there underneath. Cut the tree back here and let the graft shoot up. Do you know what will happen? It will begin to put out a branch. That branch you grafted in there, that you planted in there, will begin to produce sweet oranges. What is actually happening? The sap down below is bitter. The sap comes up. But when it reaches the graft, it is transformed!

It is made over, it is changed. The bitter sap of the bitter orange tree is turned into the sweet juice of an orange. As long as the graft remains on the tree it holds; but cut it off, throw it away, and you will have bitter oranges again. Take away the place where that graft sits, and you are back to bitter oranges — because it does not change the root, it does not change the sap; it transforms the sap. This is what Christ is.

Christ does not change a person's wicked nature; He transforms it. If someone drives Christ away, that person is the same as before, or worse. If they go off and distance themselves from Christ, if they say, "I do not believe in Christ," and drive Him out, they become a wild beast again and start tearing others apart. This is what Christ is — and it costs nothing, it takes no labour, there is no suffering in it. You do not see the bitter orange tree sweating, wearing itself out to make the change. Effortlessly, in the most natural way, the bitter sap of the tree is made over into a sweet orange. This is what Christ is: "If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin" — if Christ is within us, the body is dead to sin, and the spirit is alive for works of righteousness.

I do not know how many of you remember Father Karelas at Agia Rovi — a thin man with a face out of the Bible, a well-grounded spiritual father. There was a Greek from Russia who lived up at the end of Gyzi. Every day he walked down into Athens from Gyzi to the market and came back at midday or in the afternoon. All along the way there were quarrels, blasphemies, jibes at the women, at the men, at everyone. It was as if up in Gyzi some door of Hell opened and let the demons loose down the hill. Now, at the corner of Zalongou and Londou there was a shop where they roasted chickpeas, and the man who kept it was called Barba-Thodoros,

from Pergamon. He caught sight of the man one morning and called out to him: "Come," he says, "let's have a coffee." The man came in. "Sit down there on a sack of chickpeas. Sit. I hear you," he says, "going past down here every day, and I know it is you from the racket, from the fights, from the swearing that goes on. How is it," he says, "that at your age you still have the stomach for such things?"

He says: "I cannot help it. I cannot say anything good. It is as if someone is inside me working up this whole state of affairs. And I am ashamed of myself for it, but I cannot help it." "Tell me," he says to him, "do you practise your faith?" "What do you mean?"

"Am I going to go to church? Where would I go into a church?" "Have you at least ever gone to make a confession?" "The moment I go in," he says, "and open my mouth, they throw me out. They will not sit and listen to me. When they hear what I am, they throw me out." He says to him: "I will send you somewhere myself. Will you go?" "All right," he says, "I will go. After all the places I have been thrown out of, let me go one more time." And he sent him to old Father Karelas, the one I am telling you about, at Agia Rovi. All this was on a Monday. On the Sunday, this Barba-Thodoros is at the service there at Agia Rovi, and to his surprise he sees the line that had formed for the men to go up and receive Communion; and out of the corner of his eye he sees a figure — in different clothes, of course, rather formal ones — that looked like the man who used to go up and down from Gyzi to the market snarling and blaspheming and cursing and jeering. That is how it struck him. "Someone who resembles him," he thought, "it cannot be him." In any case, the man went up carefully and received Communion; and suddenly, when he had communed, the knowledge came, and it was confirmed that it was indeed him. So after he himself had received Communion, he made a point of going and standing next to him, to ask him discreetly afterwards whether it was him or not, and he did establish afterwards that it was — but he lost him.

In the meantime, he lost him. Then the following week the man did not come past at all. The week after that he goes by outside again. "Hey, master, good morning!" "Come in, come in! What has become of you? Have you been ill?" "Oh no, I am well." No shouting, none of the old carry-on. "I am all right," he says, "I am all right." "What do you mean, all right? Come inside." He brings him in, makes him a coffee, sits him up on the chickpea sacks — those sacks were their chairs. "Sit down," he says. "What happened? How?" "I went," he says, "where you told me to go." "Ah, so he did go. Well, what happened?" he says. "Tell me." "I went where you told me. And he," he says, "sat down and listened to me." "And then what?" "And he told me that these things that are happening to you"

"will stop." "How will they stop, Father? It is not possible." "You will come on Sunday," he tells him, "and I will put a policeman inside you who will take charge of things." "And I went," he says, "on Sunday, the day before yesterday, and I received Communion." "Ah, now I have it — I saw a wild beast standing there in front of me," he says. "I saw you right in front of me, but I could not get to you; you had gone." "Yes, I left a little earlier," he says. "And from that day on," he says, "things have changed for me." The elder had put the policeman inside him. Do you understand? He spoke to him in a practical way. He said: do not be afraid, all this is happening because there is someone else inside you. At the moment you have only got that other master in there, the one with the horns and the tail. Let us call in the great Master to move in and serve an eviction notice on this gentleman, and we shall see whether he can stay. Because when a person is possessed, the demon uses that person's mouth to blaspheme, to do all sorts of things, does it not?

And God in the same way uses those very same human faculties to bless, to counsel, to say something good, to do something good. So it is not the violin's fault; it is the violinist's. Who is playing this violin? I pick up the violin and start scraping away and the mice run off. Someone else picks up the violin and the goats stand there motionless, as you heard about Koukouzelis when he chanted. But it is not the violin's fault — the violin is the human body. It is the violinist's fault, whoever it is that is handling it. So when you will not let Christ inside to soften you, to enlighten you, to change your nous, your spiritual intellect, and all the rest, how can you possibly go forward, and how can you possibly say, "I am secure"? Ah, this great gift that God has given, which He left on the evening of Holy Thursday there in the Upper Room — the Upper Room that today is profaned by the feet of Muslims, because on account of our many sins we do not have the Upper Room; the Muslims have it. This great gift is

hidden from many people, even from so-called Christians who never miss Vespers or Matins, Orthros, and yet do not receive Communion. And when a person does not commune, they blaspheme Christ; they say to Him, "I have no need of You." That is what it amounts to. They do not say it to His face, but they say it indirectly: "You stay where You are and get on with Your business. Go inside, tell Your lies along with the priest — that we have seen the true light, that we have received the heavenly Spirit, and the rest of it. Leave me in peace. I will take the antidoron; I do not want the Gift." The antidoron — the very word means what is given in place of the Gift — and it would be better if there were no antidoron in church at all, so that it would not deceive people into thinking they had received something. And then at the end you would hear what used to be said in the Liturgy of Saint James, the Brother of God: "Depart in peace." Those who have communed feel that they have done something. Those who have not communed are left falling into the void. Because there is no tray of antidoron.

No antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Liturgy, no tray of it, and right there you feel it: why did I even come here, what have I been doing all this time? You realize it, and little by little you begin to commune more often, to be watchful, to draw near to Holy Communion. So this is the great event above all that is being taught here, and I repeat, for many people it stays hidden, and even for those clergy who ought to read these things and pass them on to us. My children, be careful: we are excommunicated when we do not receive Holy Communion. We can do nothing at all, we cannot stand, we cannot think, we cannot be comforted. We are in danger from everyone when we are not God's own chosen people, when we do not eat the flesh and blood of Christ. We are being lost day by day. If we die without a ticket, that is the danger we are in. The blood is what secures me against every sin,

and it cleanses us and it creates the conditions in us — so, I repeat, those people escaped that night from the destroying sword of the angel, because they had the blood of the lamb on the outside. That is why, I do not know who you are, you may be good people, you may be saints, you may be, you may be, you may be. But still: Holy Communion, the blood of Christ, the blood of the Lamb of God. And then you can be sure that we are singing the triumphal hymn of victory and that we will pass through in victory. Otherwise we will not pass through in victory. So, that is it, and those are my thoughts.

εκεί και τους μίλησα 25 λεφτά εκεί όρθιος, αυτών των δύο ανθρώπων και του τρίτου εκεί. Μου είναι χαρακτηριστικό, και αν είχα μια ταινία να τα πάρω αυτό το πράγμα. Σε κάθε μου λέξη γύριζε και κοίταγε τη γυναίκα του και η γυναίκα του κοίταγε αυτό. Τους έφερα αντιμετώπους ότι εσείς εδώ οι Αμερικανοί όλοι είστε καλοί άνθρωποι, αλλά όλοι θα πάτε στην κόλαση. Κοιταγώσανται οι άνθρωποι. Στήσισθατε οι άνθρωποι των καλών έργων. Στήσισθατε οι άνθρωποι αυτοί. Όμως δεν κοινωνείτε. Και αν κοινωνείτε, κοινωνείτε ανεξομολόγητοι. Γυρίζουν και κοιταγώσανται. Δηλαδή τα 25 λεφτά αυτά που τους ομιλούσα, ίσως να τους έρχεται το φιτζάκι όπως λέμε, αλλά όλα τους απασχολούσαν. Και ο ένας κοίταγε τον άλλον. Τι είναι αυτά που ακούσαμε; Τι κάναμε εμείς 40 χρόνια εδώ;

Ευχαριστούμε. δεν είναι. Πλανώνται οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι κάθονται μακριά από την εκκλησία. Πλανώνται οι ιερείς οι οποίοι δεν μας δίνουν το σώμα και το αίμα του Χριστού και δεν μας αφορίζουν, αλλά μας μοιράζουν το αντίδωρο. Αλλοίμονό τους εν ημέρα κρίσεως. Το κρομενιά μας υπενθυμίσουν, για να μας πούνε, κύριε γιατί ήρθες στην εκκλησία; να γυρίσεις τα οπίσθια του Χριστού;

σταματήσουν. «Πώς θα σταματήσουν, παπά; Δεν είναι δυνατόν.» «Θα έρθεις», του λέει, «την Κυριακή, θα σου βάλω εγώ ένα χωροφύλακα μέσα που θα λάβεις τα πράγματα.» «Και πήγα», λέει, «την Κυριακή, λέει, προχθές, και κοινώνησα.» «Ωπ, το πιάσες, πριν στήσου ένα θηρίο», λέει, «που πήγες, σε είδα μπροστά μου», λέει, «αλλά δεν μπορούσα», λέει, «να κέφτα έπηγες.» «Ναι, έφυγα», λέει, «λίγο γρηγορότερα. Από εκεί την ημέρα», λέει, «μεταξύ, άλλαξα», λέει, «τα πράγματα.» Του έβαλε το χωροφύλακα μέσα ο Γέροντας. Καταλάβατε; Του μίλησε σε πρακτικό τρόπο. Του λέει: μην φοβάστε, αυτά όλα είναι για δεν υπάρχει ο άλλος μέσα. Έχεις μόνο τον άλλον το μάστορα, με τα κέρατα και με την ουρά. Αν καλέσουμε το αφεντικό το μεγάλο να βάλουμε μέσα, να κοινοποιήσει έξωση αυτού του κυρίου, και να δούμε θα μπορεί. Διότι ένας δαιμονισμένος χρησιμοποιεί το στόμα του ανθρώπου να βλασφημήσει, να κάνει, να φτιάξει, δεν είναι;
