Summary
The speaker answers a written question about whether a woman who dyes her graying hair or relies on hair salons is guilty before God's law, noting that those who know bear fuller responsibility than those who act in ignorance. He states that cutting a woman's hair is forbidden outright, and extends his criticism to women leaving the home for men's work and wages, which he links to the collapse of marriages. He recounts the plague of hail that devastated all Egypt except Goshen, drawing the lesson that God always shelters His own, and adds the widow's two mites as proof that God weighs how a person gives rather than how much.

There is one point here, so allow me to answer this one first.
It is something we are going to collide with, of course, but we are obliged to answer it. Tell us, please, the question says, if a woman does not keep her hair as it is but uses other means — the hair salon, dyes and so on — because most of her hair has gone white, is she guilty before the law of God? Well, that depends on how the person thinks and on what she knows. Some have mitigating circumstances and some do not. Those who know have no excuse; those who do not know do have an excuse. Today this whole matter has been pushed aside, as we might say.
Almost none of us, and this includes men, takes seriously how God wants us to be. We are concerned with how we want ourselves to be, and with how many people would like us to be, and we conduct ourselves, as you know, more for ourselves and for the world than for God. Suppose I admit that I dye my hair because of my age, or because of my constitution — for here there are young men with curly hair, with white hair, and young women with white hair. Suppose now I admit that I alter it, that I change my appearance: what am I doing in that case? I am becoming a liar. I am walking around with a lie on my head.
I speak it with my tongue, and I speak it with my head. I am a liar. I am not what I am. I deceive others, or I deceive my own self. So this is ridiculous in the eyes of God. Certainly God does not want it. God knows how He made each one of us and what each one ought to have. But we — some of us big liars and some of us small ones — are inconsistent in nearly everything. We correct the creature of God, we correct the image of God. And I do not know whether I told you one evening what the Apostle Peter faced in his own day.
A certain queen wanted to meet him when she heard that here was an unlettered man, a fisherman, who was saying wonderful things. And he agreed to go. But this queen was blind. She was so polished up that a person would rather be repelled by her than take any pleasure in the sight of her — plucked, painted, done up, smeared and all the rest of it. As soon as Peter saw her he broke off the conversation and said to her: My queen, let me off the subject for a moment, because my mind is weak and I will forget something I want to ask you. I have learned that you are a wise woman, and I would like your opinion. She was flattered, and so she settled in there. He says: A great craftsman, a great painter, a great hand, had made a beautiful picture, and someone else came along, took a pencil, sat down and set about correcting it — and instead of correcting it, he ruined it. What do you say? Such a thing, he says, has happened.
She stamps her foot. If it were up to me, she says, I would give the order to have him stood up against the wall, since he dared to correct the work of that great painter. Then, my queen, he says to her, that is exactly what you are — God made you in His own way, that great Painter, and you have plucked yourself, dyed yourself, and you carry the lie around on your head, on your eyes, on your face, in your colouring and so forth. Well, the queen changed a good many colours. Whether she also changed her mind, I do not know. In any case, that is how the Apostle Peter spoke to her. I also read that once in Nafplio a foreigner had come, and in those days distinguished foreign guests were taken to the Gerousia, where the assemblies were held, what we would call the parliament, and they were even given the floor as a mark of honour.
They were received there in the benches, in the chambers of the parliament, and at the same time he was given the floor to express an opinion on the subject the assembly was debating that evening. Now this man wore a wig — he had no hair, so, there you are, a wig on his head. And when they gave him the floor, one of the members jumps up: I object, he says; a liar cannot stand here and tell us the truths we are after. The others turned on him: how can you insult the man? Do you not see, he says, that he is walking around with a lie on his head? He has no hair at all, he says, and he stands here making fools of us. And they took the floor away from him, and they even removed him from the parliamentary bench where he was sitting; they put him out of there. That is how people thought in the old days; that is how God arranged things. We, of course, correct them.
There are beauty institutes, there are all sorts of things, hair salons, dyes, and so on and so on. For whom? For God? For the Angel? For our patron Saint? For the Most Holy Theotokos? No — we are lying to one another. We know perfectly well how old this woman is and how old that man is. And even so, she likes to lie and we like her to be that way. What am I supposed to do about it now, pull out a pistol? Do I know what will become of us? God will see to it tomorrow. In any case, it is a kind of impudence toward God. God made the self as it is. There is no humility in it, because if there were humility there would be no reason for any of it. I remember a cousin of mine. Once, I do not know why, a few hairs began to show. I have seen her in five hundred colours since then. Yellow hair, black hair, I do not know what else. Why? So that five hairs would not show. What difference does it make? What is it worth to you?
Look at the colour of your hair — what sort of thing is this? And on top of it, a great deal of money; drachmas, I would hear, four hundred drachmas and other sums, for some streaks up here, bleached and so on, and she came out with a head you would not recognise. A rainbow, one says — what, has it been raining outside in the summertime? No, it did not rain; look what it cost. That is how it is, and it is not right. It simply is not right. Perhaps I am colliding now with people's weaknesses, with all the ugly things our times have brought. But it is not right, and if a person is willing to leave himself as he is, then he will become serious, he will become what he is — he will become what he is — and God gives His grace to a person through the very thing He has given him: the grey hair, this and that, whatever it may be. So neither this life nor the other life depends on what colour a person's hair is, or on how long the hair is, and all the rest of it.
And above all the cutting of it: for a woman that is forbidden one hundred per cent. God will call her to account for it. We have this in writing. For have you ever seen a bald woman? There is no such thing as a bald woman. We men, you see — some of us have a bare globe, some of us a half moon, some of us a total eclipse and some a partial one. It is not so with women.
Women, not a single hair — unless you have some venereal disease and the like, and they shut you away in the isolation wards and you come out with your head patched up.
She was taken from man. God did not give her to man for this. I do not want to reject the woman's gathering, but for this kind of work she is not made; let it be whatever it wants to be. An airwoman, a lady doctor — no; a woman of the house. The woman belongs at home, that is her kingdom. Whatever she builds outside, let her do whatever she likes, God does not put His signature to it. No one can take hold of God's hand and make Him sign that a woman may leave the home. Find me one case in a million where a woman may go out of the house. Consider that through David He says: The Lord shall take up the widow and the orphan. The widowed woman, He says, Christ Himself will take her up. He will help her in that sense. He will see her children married. He will help her children to be educated as much as they should be. God takes it upon Himself. So why must she go out the front door? And we have all gone out. What have we accomplished? Have we gone forward? We have gone backward and broken apart. Some divorces happen when a spouse goes outside the marriage and has an affair.
It will not do, because she goes out. How will you undo all that, how will you put it back together? It cannot be done. Satan is a master schemer. And he has drawn the woman out of her nest. The cases in which a woman can be blessed to leave the home can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And she has moved into so many men's jobs. And you see a woman earning thirty thousand drachmas. A young girl, thirty thousand drachmas. She takes thirty thousand while an honest, upright young man does not earn that — so that she may live on it and put it to use herself. She waits to find someone else who has another thirty, another fifty, so that she can attach herself to him. A young man with ten or fifteen thousand takes a wife and opens a household. She, with thirty, will squander it all, for the most part on unnecessary expenses. So if the matter is examined from the side of the Gospel and of the woman's calling, many faults will be found. But what are we to do about it now?
If a person is not born again from within, you cannot change his hair. You have to change the mind first. If you do not change the mind, the hair does not change; and if the mind has not changed, then whatever colour the hair may be, it will neither add anything nor take anything away.
You go to the doctor with pimples on your face, and the doctor does not even look at them. He asks you whether your stomach is working. He is searching for the cause, so that he can heal the effect. The fact that we turn out the way we do, and that we make fools of one another, and that we suffer — people are tormented by it. Take one case. A lady of sixty or sixty-five. She would go about standing; they would offer her something to sit on and she would not sit.
So as not to crease her hair or her dress. She was on her way somewhere. Sit down — by the time you reach the Military Academy you will have rusted standing up. There is nothing in it, nothing at all: it is egotism, thoughts by which people are tormented and made to suffer. We do not have that simplicity in which God made us, and it is not God who is to blame — we are to blame. So this is not the real issue. Both the woman and the man will stop doing what they do, all these outlandish, superfluous things, from the moment they are born again. As long as a woman has not been born again, nothing comes of it. You will tell me that there are many Christian women who do worse than the worldly ones. That is true — but they are not Christians; they are only called Christians. From the moment they truly become Christians, things change. Christ changes a person's nature. This game does not work. So when the question here says 'before the law of God' — I cannot say; I am not a lawgiver. In any case, if you read...
...the Church's own books, you will see that the Fathers have taken a stand on these things, and also concerning men who cut their hair or curl it with irons and such devices in order to appear handsome to the girls, or girls who do the same. They have taken a stand, and the Church even imposes excommunication for it. But we take neither the Church into account nor anyone else; we do as we please. So here is my one wish: may God wait for us to change our minds, and then all these things that are not right will change as well. I cannot say that it is right. It is not right. God takes no joy in a woman getting up and going off to have a five-hundred-drachma bucket of paint put on her head, when she has nothing at all inside her, so that those people can change the colour of her hair or fix it up for her, and do it twice over. A human being is not to be corrected; he has no need of correcting, because the One he will answer to first is God, not man. It is men who hand out certificates.
They say, look, these people are unkempt, and I do not know what else. That certificate is not accepted anywhere. Where will you present it? You are dead now. And four of them, or rather eight, join together — eight hands, eight feet — and carry you off. What use is that certificate to you, where will you show it? These are lies we tell one another here. Drachmas, thousands of drachmas, a great deal of money that could cover so much poverty, so many orphans, so many needs, thrown away on paints and on the things that go with this business. In any case, forgive me; I did not want to take up this subject, but since it has been put to us, we have dealt with it. So much for that. Now, with regard to what we have been discussing, where we left off together in our other lessons. We were, as you know, at the point where God is preparing, through Moses,
to take the people of Israel out of Pharaoh's hands and bring them through the sea into the Promised Land. This people met with many difficulties in getting away from there. Pharaoh, for reasons of self-interest and unbelief, would on no account give in and let this people go. When the plagues came upon them one after another, he was forced many times to say: Go. But a little later, the next day, he would change his mind. Faced with the various plagues and the ordeals and the tribulation which the wrath of God brought upon Egypt, he would pull himself together, he would hurry at once and beg Moses. And Moses would beg Aaron to entreat God. Each time there was a plague. And then, every time, the same thing.
I have sinned. Entreat God for me as well. Moses did it. The plague was lifted. The matter was settled. And the next day, the same thing all over again.
Oh my!
Whenever very hard things come upon us from God, many people say that God is harsh. God is harsh in proportion to the hardness of a person's own heart. And many people say that God hardened Pharaoh's heart. Yes, they say, Scripture says so. He permitted Pharaoh's heart to be hardened. He did not harden the heart; He permitted it to be hardened. It depends on us. It depends on the inner world of each single person, whether it hardens or does not harden — not on God. Let me give you an example.
Suppose we light a fire, and let us say that this fire is God. I take a candle and bring it near the fire. What happens to the candle? The candle melts. In that same fire, that very same flame, I take an egg and bring it near. What happens to the egg? The egg hardens. The one hardens, the other spreads out and softens. Is the fire at fault, or the kind of thing that is brought near the fire? Souls are like this. One person, well disposed, sees, marvels, fears, reveres God, takes God into account.
He is humbled. Another is hardened. And then, on top of everything, an empty-headed young fellow the other day, working from the new theories, asks: if God were almighty, could He commit suicide? Answer that one. Another man in Aigio said that if there is a God, let Him show me right now. I am ready to face Him. Let Him come now and cut off my head, let Him do whatever He wants, if there is a God. What is God anyway — is God some speculator, is God this or that, and so on and so forth. And another man hears such a word and shrinks back and crawls into his shell out of reverence in the face of that satanic, luciferian pride. And so, someone will tell you, God is not to blame; God did not harden anyone; it is an idiom of Scripture.
God did not harden him; He permitted him to be hardened according to his own heart. He will give, it says, to each one according to his heart. According to the way you think. You may be sinning, but God sees that you are sinning not out of malice but out of ignorance. Someone else, whom you trusted, dragged you along and you fell into the sin, and God finds mitigating circumstances for you. And He sees that when you find out what is really going on, where you are living, what your true situation is, when you repent, He does not cut off His kinship with you. He goes on blessing your work, giving you your health as well. He lets you have people who respect you, and so on, even though they ought not to respect you. He shelters you, He covers you, because He recognises mitigating circumstances in your sin. That is why people will not all be judged the same way. Ten of us can commit the very same sin,
and we will be judged in ten different ways. Because God will take into account why a person sins. Not what he does, but how he does it. That is the whole point. It is exactly what happened when the Lord was sitting opposite the treasury — what we would call the candle stand and collection box in the church. He was sitting across from it and watching the people who came in and put money in. He was watching, it says, how they put in, not how much they put in — how they cast in their copper coins. Two of them saw that He was watching them, and they took out their money and threw it in with pride, and they made it clang and rattle so that He would notice: look here, look what I am giving. But when the poor little widow came and untied her small handkerchief and put in her two mites, then He gathered them and said to them: truly, she has put in more than all of them. How much did all those others put in? They may have put in millions,
and she put in two mites — she has put in more than all of them. This poor little widow, she put in her whole living. Those two mites carried her heart with them; if she could have put her heart in there too, she would have thrown it in. Those others, of course, gave out of their surplus, and out of pride, so that I would look at them and say, well done, what generous people. God does not see the way we see, and that is exactly why He has taken judgment out of our hands.
He does not allow us to judge, because we get it wrong. We do not know exactly how the matter really stands, and we judge it in proportion to our own malice, or in proportion to the relationship we have with the other person. Our judgment is always partial; it is never absolute. Now this is what happens with this gentleman Pharaoh as well. God permitted his heart to be hardened. He did not do it. Pharaoh acted out of self-interest; he took no account of God, he took no account of anything. He had six hundred thousand men down there. They worked day and night. A great deal of money, thousands of days' wages every day, for nothing, free of charge. So with all that in front of him, he takes no account of God, no account of anything. And that is precisely why these things happened as they did. So each time God sent a plague to force his hand. But he hardened himself all the more, and nothing came of it. Where I am now, where I am reading, is chapter nine. And it mentions one plague. It says: behold, tomorrow, about this hour, at the very hour I am speaking to you, He says, I will rain down hail, I will send hail, very grievous, heavy, great,
such as has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. That is to say, since the land of Egypt came into being, hail as great as the hail that will fall tomorrow has never fallen. So send now, if you will, gather in the livestock, warn your people to bring in whatever is in these fields. Nothing will be left. In any case, Pharaoh paid no attention. But certain of his own people listened to what these men, Moses and Aaron, had said, and they went and warned their households and brought in their animals from the field and so on, and they were spared. All the others were destroyed; not one was left. Everyone who stayed outside was struck down — they had said, we do not care. He that feared the word of the Lord among the servants of Pharaoh. To fear means to revere. So too a wife is to fear her husband, to revere her husband,
to take her husband into account — that man is God-fearing. What does it mean, I fear God? It means I revere God, I take God into account. If the day has dawned for me, I acknowledge it — it is His. If I reach the evening, that is His too. That is what it means to take Him into account. If I have something, if I have a mind, if I have sharpness, if I have anything, one talent more than the next person, God has given it. That is what it means to take God into account. If He wants, He takes it from me, because God is an engineer, God is an electrician. One little screwdriver, and He gives your wits a small turn. And you start speaking gibberish — you who played the clever one, who blasphemed, who did not care, who spared nothing. He takes a little screwdriver, gives your mind a small turn, and afterwards they cart you off to the madhouse. And we have plenty of cases like that. All those who stay far from God are taken aback when they meet such things. He feared the word of the Lord,
he gathered his servants and his livestock quickly into the houses. But he who did not pay attention to the word of the Lord left his servants and his livestock in the fields. In any case, that hail came, and Moses, it says, stretched out his rod toward heaven, and the Lord sent thunder and hail. That is, it came with lightning bolts, it fell, the whole atmosphere was on fire. Trembling and fear took hold of them. You know, many people act like wild beasts and blaspheme Christ to His face. But let the lightning start and the thunder we talk about begin, and you should see them, how small they become, how small they shrink from that fear. I do not know whether you happened to watch the news about
those two floods that happened here last year, that night, the first great flood that came down — you would have thought it was midday outside. The lightning bolts were so bright and gave such clear light that you could see the whole of Attica. And with us, of course, it came in bursts; there it must have been going on continuously, and the atmosphere was burning and it was raining hail the size of an egg, as we say — something like that happened. Moses, it says, stretched out his rod toward heaven, and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire ran along the ground, and the Lord rained hail upon the land of Egypt. So there was hail, and fire flashing in the midst of the hail, very grievous hail, such as had never been in all the land of Egypt since it was established as a nation. And the hail struck
in all the land of Egypt everything that was in the fields, both man and beast; and the hail struck every plant of the field, and shattered every tree of the field. Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail. There it is. In the quarter, in the place, in the region where the Hebrews lived, no hail fell. All Egypt was scorched except for that region where the Hebrews were. This is who God is. Further on there is something similar, which we will come to, and it is more general, and we who came later ought to know it.
I do not know whether you read in the papers about an incident that took place in Russia. In Russia, in broad daylight, in the sky, for half an hour, a hand was writing. I do not have it with me to tell you what it wrote. Among the things that hand wrote — and the whole region came to a standstill, all the cars, the traffic, everything. And for three hours they stood looking at it, and it wrote strange new things. What is going to happen, what the world is like, and what will become of the faithful in relation to the unbelieving. That He has a way of preserving those who believe through the destruction that is coming. In fact I have written about it in a magazine I put out at Saint Marina's. It will come out in the December issue,
perhaps if it comes out and everything goes through. There are three other incidents as well that remind people they must change their lives, because things are getting rather bad, the way we are going. And it shows clearly — and it came into my mind there and I said, look, here too He will shelter His own. He always has a way to shelter His own. All this, of course, is fairy tales to unbelievers.
They are not fairy tales at all; God is the same God. We must be very blind indeed, we Greeks above all, because the Lord, and the Saints, and the Theotokos, the God-bearer, have sheltered us many times, in many ways. But we, in our pride, put it all down to ourselves, that we manage it, that we are somebody, whatever it is. We are nothing. If He does not shelter us, we are nothing. How is it that our own people escaped in the German occupation? They would come for them, and instead of knocking on the right door — the door that certain other well-meaning countrymen of ours had pointed out — they would open the door next to it; or they would not open it at all, and they would not take the man they were after but take someone else, or take no one, right in front of him. To be speaking with the very man and not recognise him, and not be able to take him. What are these things? Is it not that someone is sheltering you? Is it not that there is something more than what we see and hear? But we will not accept it — everything is our own strength, we are somebody and no one else is. So here it says plainly: the whole land was scorched, the whole land of Egypt was destroyed, except for the place where the Hebrews were. The Hebrews were the pampered darlings; nothing happened to them. Then Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them: this time I have sinned. That is how it looks, on the surface, I have sinned — because many people say this,
I did wrong, I will put it right, I will change my life — and I do not change. For years, again and again they have made the decision, again and again they have promised, and they do not cut off the sin, they do not stop. This time he says, I have sinned, the Lord is righteous — meaning, He has dealt rightly with me — and I and my people are ungodly. He confesses it. So that anyone hearing those words would say: there, that is it, he has come to his senses. Very well: entreat the Lord that the thunders of God and the hail may cease. The thunders of God and the hail — not the sort of thunder men manufacture, but God's thunder. And I will send you away, and you shall stay no longer. And Moses said to him: when I go out of the city, I will stretch out my hands toward heaven, and these things will stop. But take care, because you have said this many times already.
This is the longsuffering of God. God permitted it once, and Pharaoh deceived Him. Twice, three times, four, five, six, seven. We are at the seventh time now, here. God knows in advance that Pharaoh will go back on his word, and He still does the lesser thing and grants him the favour, and Pharaoh thinks, in his own eyes, that he has fooled God. This is what we human beings are; this is what we think. The longsuffering of God and the kindness of God, which according to Paul leads us to metanoia, to repentance, we treat as weakness, or as proof that He does not exist. If there is a God, let Him come here and we will settle it. Do you see? In any case, nothing came of the man. He did not accept it, as was shown afterwards. Because he began to think about it differently and he turned
to allowing only some of the men to leave. Moses does not agree; all the men will go. Then let the men go, he says, but let the women and the children stay. Moses does not agree; they will not stay, they will go too. Again he does not agree, and Pharaoh gives way again: let them go, but let them not take the sheep, let them not take the goats, and so on. Then Moses says, what will we sacrifice when we get there? Moses has the word that everything must be lifted up from there, that nothing must be left behind. Pharaoh did not want to let them all go, because he understood that they would be gone for good, and this is where the whole argument comes from. In any case, it goes on further down and says: Moses prayed again, Pharaoh did not allow it, he deceived God, as we would put it. Now Joseph — Moses, I mean — and Aaron go once more to Pharaoh, and they told him the new message God had sent,
that tomorrow the whole of Egypt would be thick with locusts. He hears it, of course; he had already tasted other plagues. In any case, the next day an east wind blew and brought clouds of locusts, and the land was filled with locusts. They had never seen anything like it. And a species of locust like that did not exist in Egypt. In any case, the result is the same as before.
"I have sinned. Ask God to lift all this away, and I will let you go." And God does the lesser thing again: He pardons him, He allows it to happen. But this Pharaoh, even so, did not change. And do you know how the locusts left? A strong north-west wind blew and picked up the whole swarm of locusts and threw it into the
Red Sea. And not a single one was left in Egypt. Of course, when people today hear these things they think they are a joke. And yet we ourselves went through this back in my own homeland. There was a plague of locusts. The Ministry sent us kerosene and sprayers, and they obliged us to burn a set quantity of locusts every day and to collect a set quantity every day, per person, so as to wipe the locusts out. And each of us would bring in something like forty or fifty okades of locusts, or else we would burn off a whole area that had gone pitch black with them. Let me put it to you this way: we would burn a hundred locusts, or gather up a hundred locusts, and a billion would come up right behind us. Immediately, that very same hour. Not the next day, giving them time to breed and lay eggs and so on. Immediately, that very hour, a billion more behind us.
Nothing was left; not a tree was spared. Above all, the locusts went after the onions. Wherever there was an onion down in the ground, they would drive in their beaks and eat. It must be sweet to them, it must suit them; I don't know what they find in an onion. They would climb up the stone walls and come down, eat, climb up and come down again. The whole world had turned black. But then the word went out from a devout priest: nothing else can save us, the only thing left is to go to the Mega Spilaio Monastery, at Kalavryta — because I am from Aigio — and bring back the relics of Saint Alexios; the box, as they call it, the box that holds inside it the relics of Saint Alexios the Great, and above all his holy skull. And when they brought those relics...
the whole population came out in procession to receive them, and so on. And the blessing of the water, the Agiasmos, was served. The next day there was not a single locust left in the whole area. They went off in the night, they went on their own and fell into the sea. It was summer, and the boats were out with the lamp nets. Do you know what a lamp net is? The one that catches fish at night. And their nets came up loaded — tons of fish, they thought — and when they hauled them ashore in the morning, they were full of locusts. The locusts had gone by themselves; they had destroyed themselves. Somewhere else there was an irrigation ditch, and they went and fell into the ditch, of their own accord. What can I tell you — that is enough; we lived through it. And in fact, this is what happened at the time: there was a man who suffered from epilepsy, that is to say, he was possessed by a demon,
and he was a blasphemer. That procession took place on the top of a small hill, one of the five little hills in the area. When we came up onto the summit, the elder priest gave orders that two large candles, two candlesticks, be set up there on the top. On a slab of stone they were to spread a cloth, and on it place the box with the holy relics. As you came out onto that summit, the wind would nearly lift you off your feet; a wind was blowing up there that left nothing standing. And this man blasphemed those relics; he called them a donkey's bones. And then the elder priest said to him — I remember it — "Angelis" — Angelis was his name — "Angelis, how can you speak like that?
Don't you see the miracle here?" "What miracle am I supposed to see?" "Don't you see these candles? The whole place is being lifted up by the wind, and yet their flames are not moving at all; the flames of the candles are not stirring in the slightest. Don't you see that?" That is how it is. But it takes spiritual eyes to see such things. Spiritual eyes are needed, because not all eyes see. They are instruments in someone else's hands. That is why the old people used to say, the nous — the spiritual intellect — is what sees and the nous is what hears. The intellect sees, they say, and the intellect hears. You may have eyes, you may have knowledge, but if the master of the house inside you is not good, then you neither see well, nor hear well, nor judge things well. And that is more or less what happened here,
in that case. In any event, He goes on with the plagues and permits the ninth wonder, the ninth plague as we have been calling them; He permits what I told you about earlier, that you will have total darkness. And they did have total darkness, for three days, a darkness that could be felt. The Egyptians were pinned where they were; they could not get up even to relieve themselves. But in the houses where the Hebrews were, there was light. Imagine now living, let us say, on the ground floor and being a Hebrew, and on the floor above there is an Egyptian,
and they have darkness for three days and you have light. How does such a thing happen? That is how it was, how it is, and how it will be. And it is not only between things; it is between people as well. You look at this and see that it is a cassette, and the other man looks and sees a cauliflower. At the very same moment. His darkness is so thick that he calls white black and black white. Because for a person to see and to judge things in a godly way, he needs the corresponding light. "In Thy light shall we see light," as we chant at the Doxology. Without the light of the grace of the Holy Spirit we cannot see divine things. We cannot see what we are, nor where we come from, nor why we came, nor where we are going.
We think we simply sprang up, that we came here to live; whereas in fact we did not come here to live, we came here to die, and we die in order to live. Life is not this one; life is after the grave — and many people actually believe that the grave is the end. "Let me die and get some rest," a man says. Seriously? There is a bed already made for you where you are going. Who told you that you will rest? Who told you that life ends there? Life is not the end. This life has an end; the other life has no end. That life has no finish; this life has a finish, and death is not the finish. So this way of thinking is missing in many people, because there is darkness inside the nous, the spiritual intellect. That is why, if you ever pray in the way of the Fathers —
not the way we pray for the little grandchild and for grandpa and for daddy and for mummy and the rest, the way children do it — praying in the way of the Fathers, that is, with awareness, with the mind engaged, then those who say those prayers should without fail say this: "Lord, enlighten my darkness." Because we do have darkness, a darkness you can feel, of the Egyptian kind. Deep darkness about a great many things. And if we are well disposed, He will enlighten for us those dark corners which we neither notice nor take into account. And then we see; and when we do see the other side of the coin, we often say, "Where on earth was I all those years?
What was I doing? What did I want with all that reading, all that learning? What good did it do me?" — when here are these simple, necessary things, the things that change a person's nature, that console him, that give his life content, that give his life meaning. "Where was I all this time? How do I know these things now? Why did I not know them? Why is it like this?" The person changes, as though he had woken up out of a heavy sleep. But what is needed is what I told you: light. And the light is in the Church, the light is in the Mysteries, the light is what Christ has. "I am the light of the world," says Christ. We have electric light, we have this material light,
but what we lack is the spiritual light; and when a person does not have this spiritual light within him, it is as if he were walking along like a blind man, feeling his way by touch to come upon certain things, and then sitting down to think them over with his nous and to weigh them up. Many things resemble one another, and you cannot tell them apart, and so a person is left with no share in all these Mysteries. In fact, concerning man's calling in this world, I often hear certain people say, "I'm working for my daily bread. I have no time to go to church." And what is this "daily bread" that you have suddenly learned about? What is the epiousion, the daily bread? Go on, tell me. Where did you get that word from? Who first spoke that word? Is it the loaf from the bakery? The one the mice eat without doing any work? The cats eat it, the birds eat it,
and it gets thrown away — the French used to clean their backsides with it; forgive me for saying so — because perhaps you didn't know this: the French had a soft bread that they sold at the kiosks so that people could see to themselves in the way I have described. Come now: is that the daily bread? When Christ gives us the Our Father, was He speaking about that flour? No — He was speaking about Christ. God said it: "Give us this day our daily bread" — that is what you are to ask for. The epiousion bread, the daily bread, is the Body and Blood of Christ. And that is exactly why the Our Father is placed before Holy Communion, before the priest says "The holy things are for the holy," before he comes out and says, "With the fear of God, with faith." It is not that loaf I told you about, the one the mice eat, the cats eat, the birds eat for free without working, and which we ourselves toss about here and there. What do you mean, you are working for your daily bread? The birds do no work,
and they live. Did a single bird die during the Occupation? Not one. We were the ones who dropped dead. Not "passed away" — we dropped dead like animals. So where is your worth, man? A time came when on Athinas Street there was nothing to be had but carob pods. Or not even that. Even the wild greens had run out. And the carts had nothing on them but carob pods.
That is God's last reminder that we are prodigals, and that we are doing it all for carob pods. But how is a person to learn these things when he has never once bowed his head over these eternal matters? That is why so many are left baffled: "We lack for nothing, and still there is no joy in our house.
We don't have that gladness." And that other man over there, his children with nothing on their backs, himself with nothing, and you don't know how he manages — and you see him whistling, you see him singing, you see him laughing. Where does he find that courage? Where does he find that cheerfulness? There is a different world inside that man. He believes that here he is only a sojourner. These are things that people do not believe, not even Christians. Man is not an owner living on the earth, as you hear said over and over. He is a tenant on the earth. One day he will be served his notice of eviction. He brought nothing with him, and he is going to take nothing away. So, starting from there,
let him reflect and make good use of his sojourn here, and let him ask the One whom some call God, others a higher power, others a higher being, I don't know what: "If You exist, be with me too, enlighten this darkness of mine, because I do not know what my calling is. I have the notion that I came here to gather up a bit of lime and a few bricks and a few iron rods so as to put up apartment blocks" — whereas tomorrow, if He smashes it all to pieces, nothing can remain, because this earth will pass away and this civilisation will pass away. And man today has performed wonders by human measure, but that is because he is a little god who has done these wonders, not because he did them as a mere man. Of himself he has made nothing; he has simply discovered the laws that God had already put
in place. Suppose we grant that God takes just one thing out of the middle of it — magnetism, so that there is no magnet at all, so that man can make no use of the magnet — poor foolish man. The aeroplanes will hang there in the air, the ships will be left with no way to steer, everything will come to a halt. Just one of His laws, if God were to remove it from His creation. But egotistical man, who has set foot on the moon and yet has not come down to earth, does what he does and says what he says and stays in the darkness like the Egyptians. And right next door to him there are people who see and take delight and rejoice and are preparing for another life, "of whose kingdom there shall be no end." Whenever I read that, or we talk it over together, it always consoles me, it encourages me in every situation, and above all in these days of ours, which are very sorrowful and very ugly, and we shall be in mourning a great deal.
These things are very consoling, if we are willing to turn back and put Christ into our home, Christ into our work, Christ into our flesh, Christ into our cash box, Christ into our learning generally, and so on. If we make Him our guide, we secure for here a certain length of days, and for there eternal life. Because it is a bad thing for a person to die, and especially to die before his hour. The people have a saying, that a man's lamp had not yet gone out. They take it for granted that every person has a lamp. And it is true that every person has a lamp. God puts into the hand of every person a lamp,
and my own lamp may have oil in it for eighty years, yours for ninety, another man's for a hundred, another's for sixty, another's for seventy, another's for a hundred and twenty, another's I don't know how long. And although my lamp has oil for that long, I don't take care of my lamp, I knock it over and the oil spills out, and I smash the lamp, and I leave sooner than I ought to have left. Because I did not take care as I should have. I led a slovenly life, a life far from God, a life far from the natural laws and the moral laws. And so my life, instead of lengthening, shrinks: if it was mine to live a hundred years, if He had given me a lamp with oil for a hundred, I have cut it down to twenty-five, to twenty-three. Read every day about the accidents that happen and you will see that it is not God who kills them — ninety percent of them die from all sorts of madness.
Go around the hospitals, go around the asylums, go around all these places and see young people wasting away, see people who once had the strength to squeeze water out of a stone. And now they are tormented, they suffer, they are tied down to their beds. Why is it? Why do so many people go and are lost? Because man himself has walked away from God's road. He lives by neither the natural law nor the moral law. And just as when a man puts his hand into the fire where he ought not to put it — because if he does he will be burned, and they may have to cut it off, and he will suffer, and so on — in the same way, whoever transgresses the moral law will also get his own wages for it. And we see that a person's life has come down to twenty-five years. Whole families are lost every day, by the new ways that we ourselves have invented. When I would come home at dawn from my entertainments, my mother would say to me:
"You've sprouted wings, like the ants do." How could I have understood that? This is what the world was telling me, this is what the so-called well-wishers were telling me, this is what the flesh was telling me, this is what my own ego was telling me. And so I would shut the door in her face. Because that is how I saw things. I had darkness in me, thick darkness. There was not one person to speak even a single word to me. Everyone led me toward evil; no one said a good word to me. How I turned back, how I came, God knows. Nobody can come to me and say, "Dimitri, I was the one who helped you, I said one good word to you." Nobody said it to me. How did God arrange it? But when there is good will inside a person, God has no difficulty taking hold of that person and bringing him out into the light. God has no difficulty.
It is our sins that make it difficult for God. Let us untie His hands. "Give Me permission," He says to you, "and I will take it all upon Myself. I am not asking you why you sinned, I am not asking you why you do this. Do you want it? I will loose everything for you, I will change your nature. I will set up such an installation of illumination inside you that you will see things very differently from the way you used to see them." But our egotism will not let us. How was Paul seeing when he was on his way to Damascus? How was he seeing? How did he see the Christians, how did he see Christ? As the ringleader of a heretical sect. How many people must Paul have killed, how many people did Paul shut up in prison, how many people did Paul beat — and even so, God kept close on his heels until He caught him outside Damascus.
When He seized him, he remained three days with his eyes open, but in darkness. With his eyes open he could not see, it says — with open eyes he saw no one. And then He sent Ananias, who laid his hand on him and said, "Brother Saul, the One you met on the road has sent me." Whom did you meet? Do you remember, when you said to Him, "Who are You, Lord?" He is the One who sent me, so that you might see again. And Paul's eyes were opened. And it is written there — I don't know whether you read these things, so as to draw a way of life from them — that scales fell from his eyes. Scales, they fell from his eyes. As though you could sweep them up with a dustpan. His eyes open, and scales on them. He could not see. And from the moment the scales fell,
everything changed. And now the persecutor is the one persecuted. And the man who used to sacrifice others is himself sacrificed. And the man who used to accuse now praises. And the man who used to drive them out now stands up for them. When did it happen? With a single meeting with Christ, and nothing more. But through it all he had the humility to say, "Who are You, Lord?" Not "Hey, who are you?" — but "Who are You, Lord?" That is a higher thing, that is something greater. He becomes at once the servant of the Lord. And Christ says to him, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting." That is how these things are. Holy Scripture must not be passed over without notice. A passage may be only this small, and yet it carries a great teaching. If each of us takes it and puts it into his own life, he has much to be edified by. And we go astray because we do not know the Scriptures.
we don't read them. People watch shows and more shows and shows again, dramas and melodramas. Read the Old Testament. There you will see things, there you will see illumination, there you will see spirit, there you will see the destiny of man. But we do not read it. In any case, our subject here now comes to the point that is the tenth, and it is also the most fearsome of the wonders He worked on the Egyptians. But this wonder that happened here has to do with our own Pascha and with Christ. It is in the twelfth chapter of Exodus, the last thing He did to them, so that God could force them to let Him take His people. No one can stand against Him,
and no one can frighten the man of God. Unless the man of God abandons God — then he is in danger from the men of Satan. What follows is the tenth plague, which is bound up with the Exodus and with the crossing of the Red Sea toward the land of promise. It is connected with the Pascha of the Hebrews, and with our own Pascha, and with the way of our salvation. But that will be another lesson, God willing, next time. This much for tonight.

δεν κάνει γιατί βγαίνει έξω. Πώς θα τα ανατρέψεις, πώς θα τα φτιάξεις πίσω; Δεν γίνονται. Σατανάσης υπερκρίτης. Και την έβγαλε τη γυναίκα από τη φύκη της. Είναι μετρημένες στα δάχτυλα οι περιπτώσεις που μπορεί να ευλογηθεί μια γυναίκα να βγει από το σπίτι. Και έχει μπει σε τόσες ανδρικές δουλειές. Και βλέπετε μια γυναίκα παίρνει 30.000 δραχμές. Μια κοπέλα 30.000 δραχμές. Παίρνει 30.000 δραχμές και να μην παίρνει ένα παλικάρι τίμιο, ηθικό κλπ. Να το ζήσει αυτή και να το αξιοποιήσει αυτή. Περιμένει να βρει κάποιον άλλον, να έχει αυτός άλλα 30, άλλα 50, για να προσκολληθεί σε αυτόν. Ένα παλικάρι με 10.000, με 15.000 παίρνει μια γυναίκα και ανοίγει σπίτι. Αυτή με 30 θα τα χαλάσει όλα σε περιττά έξοδα ως επί το πλείστον. Αν λοιπόν λέγω εξεταστεί από της πλευράς του Ευαγγελίου και της αποστολής της γυναικός, πολλά σφάλματα θα βρεθούν. Τι να κάνουμε όμως τώρα;
ο οποίος ήτο βλάσφημος. Αυτή η λιτανεία έγινε στην κορυφή ενός λοφίσκου, εκ των πέντε λοφίσκων που υπάρχουν στην περιοχή. Όταν βγήκαμε επάνω στην κορυφή, ο γέρων ιερεύς έδωσε εντολή στην κορυφή επάνω να στηθούν δύο λαμπάδες, δύο κηροπήγια. Επάνω σε ένα λιθάρι να βάλουν μια πετσέτα και επάνω να μπει το κουτί με τα Άγια Λείψανα. Όταν έβγαινε ο άνθρωπος στην κορυφή, τον σήκωνε ο αέρας, φυσούσε ένας αέρας από εκεί που δεν άφηνε τίποτα. Και αυτός εβλασφήμισε τα λείψανα αυτά, τα είπε ως τα όνου. Και του είπε τότε, ενθυμούμαι, ο γέρων ιερεύς: Βρε Αγγελή, Αγγελή τον λέγανε, βρε Αγγελή, πώς εκφράζεσαι έτσι;
