Summary

The lecture continues a verse-by-verse study of Exodus, framing Israel's bondage in Egypt and exodus toward the Promised Land as directly relevant to Christians as the New Israel, and noting Pharaoh's economic motive for never releasing his unpaid workforce. God promises that His name will endure for all generations, that He will give the people favor before the Egyptians, and that they will not depart empty-handed but will ask for silver, gold, and garments and so strip Egypt of its wealth as wages for their years of labor. God then appoints Aaron the Levite, already coming to meet Moses, as his mouth while Moses stands to him as God, and hands Moses the rod, which would later strike the Red Sea in the form of a cross — dividing it with one blow and rejoining it with another, as the Church chants that the sea was struck cross-wise.

Tonight, then, let us take up the continuation of what we said the day before yesterday and the time before that. We are speaking from Exodus, from the Old Testament of course, which contains many incidents, many events, that we absolutely must know, because they are bound up with our own life, since we are what is called the New Israel. Here in Exodus, in the book of Exodus, what is discussed is the exodus of the people of Israel out of Egypt, where they were held captive, and their being brought through the sea by the help of Moses into the Promised Land. And I will be looking here at my notes on chapter three, and we had reached the point where Moses now comes face to face with God.

He wanted to use Moses, if you like, but Moses lost his nerve; he did not want to take on this work, this service — he was afraid. And he had one drawback as well: he was slow of speech. That disarmed him; he lost his courage. He thought that it was by his own cleverness that he would manage to persuade Pharaoh to hand this people over to him. Pharaoh had no intention of letting this people go, because he had economic reasons. All these people were working for the building projects and for the economy of Egypt without a penny. They received no wages. So you have all these thousands of workers — how many thousands of workers, roughly — and they are put to work for free

which is no small thing for the economy of a state. And so what happened? Self-interest made Pharaoh determined never to give in and let this people leave one day, to go off to its own homeland, as we were saying, or to worship its God somewhere far away in its own manner. That is roughly where we were, and now we are waiting for Moses' answer to God. So in verse eleven it says: And Moses answered God: Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring out the sons of Israel from Egypt? Who am I? Am I to present myself? The palace, and where am I to present myself, and do this work? And yet Moses, as you know, was the very man who had lived in the palace. Of course, this was now under a different Pharaoh.

He was a man who had done great things, at any rate. And God said: I will be with you. And as long as I am with you, what are you afraid of, if you go? Since I am the one sending you, it is not really you who go. Here is something we must always keep in mind. When we have the assurance that what we are about to do is in accordance with God, let us not be afraid to do it. Whether it is called trade, or a journey, or marriage, or a business, or whatever else it may be called. Because if God is for us, who can be against us? Let us not do things for which we do not have God's assurance completely, and have only the assurance of our own reasoning, of our own advantage, of our flesh, of our

own ego, and, for all our talk, yes, we do take God into account, but in our own way. We put God last. God must come first; He must not come last.

Zero, zero, zero, zero, zero, zero — add up the number, and it comes to nothing. That is man and his works. Now put a one at the end, a single one. Put Christ at the end. Nothing; it stays a one. Take Christ and put Him in front. All those zeros become a million, ten million, a hundred million, and so on. And all that happened was that the one was moved and placed in front. That is Christ, who gives worth to the zeros and to their works. But our own egotism, of course, will not let us grasp this, and so we lose out. How much God ought to be consulted, because we see — why, we cannot even see past our own nose, what will happen tomorrow, how the situation will turn out, what sort of person this will be in the future, and so on: the man I am going into partnership with, the one I am going to marry. We ask God simply to put His seal on the wedding crowns, or to sign off with the blessing of water, the Agiasmos, that we will have done at the business — and in ten days, shipwreck; in ten days, divorce, and so forth. Is God to blame? God is not to blame. Here, however, Moses took the measure of his own strength, so to speak, and in humility he said: Who am I? Do you not have plenty of others, men of standing, educated men, intellectuals, officials? Officials — and you picked me, the shepherd, to do this work? God's answer, in any case, is: I, He tells him, I will be with you. Now of course...

that is how it is; man always wants an assurance: what is the sign, how will you guarantee me that you will be with me? And the Lord anticipates him and says this to him: And this shall be the sign to you that I have sent you: when you have brought my people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain. He tells him what will happen, that is: this and this will take place. But Moses insists again.

When I go to the sons of Israel and say to them, the God of our fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, what is his name, what is this God called — what shall I say to them?

said Moses to God. And God said to Moses: I AM the Existing One, Ho On. And He said: Thus shall you say to the sons of Israel: the Existing One has sent me to you. The Jehovah's Witnesses go searching for the name of God. It says Ho On; God is called the Existing One. Do you not say Jehovah for God? But that is because they read the translations they have there in their hands. And they have translated everything — the Lord, God — they have translated it all as Jehovah. He says, look, here it is, Jehovah — but that is a translation. Go and find the text, and let us see what it says. What does Ho On mean? We see it many times above our Lord's head: an omicron, an omega, a nu — Ho On. What does Ho On mean? The One who exists.

Nobody made God; God does not exist from a certain moment onward. And it is precisely because He simply is: I am the One who exists, the One who always exists — that is God's name. The Existing One has sent me; the One who exists has sent me. And that is exactly why our Lord has those letters written on His halo, Ho On, while elsewhere He is called the Alpha and the Omega, Alpha and Omega, and that means the beginning and the end — because God has neither beginning nor end; He Himself is both beginning and end. So you will tell them all, you will tell this people of the Israelites, that He has sent me. Moses, as you know, is not in the company of the Israelite people;

he has been away for forty years now, ever since he killed the Egyptian. Moses is at Mount Sinai. It is about four hundred miles from Cairo, for anyone who would travel there. Now God sends him to set out, to go and find Pharaoh, to persuade him, to take this people from him and bring them through the wilderness, through the sea, into the Promised Land. And God said to Moses: Thus shall you say to the sons of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Not the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob. The tri-hypostatic character of the Godhead is presented from that time on.

God the Father, the Son, the Spirit — God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. So then: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob has sent me — has sent me to you. This shall be the sign, my name forever. And this is my memorial to all generations. He is saying that this will be something that will never be wiped out from among mankind, something that will surely come to pass. In any case, He encourages him: I will give this people grace before the Egyptians — up to now they are enslaved, but now I will give them grace. That is, I will bring it about that the Egyptians will be ashamed before them and afraid of them, of these enslaved people. And when you depart, you shall not depart empty-handed.

When all these people leave — about three million souls they were — you shall not go away empty either. You worked all those years. I myself will arrange something so that you receive your wages. And what was it, you ask? Secondly, He told them to ask from their masters and generally from their neighbors, from the others, for whatever was valuable, gold, silver, as a loan, and they will give it to you — so that when they left, the Hebrews carried off with them almost all the gold of Egypt as they departed from there. Now someone will ask, how did the Egyptians hand it over? It is what we say ourselves: God made fools of them. You shall ask, He says, and I will not let you go away empty either. You shall even be paid.

Every woman shall ask of her neighbor and of the woman who lodges in her house for vessels of silver and vessels of gold, and garments, and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you shall strip the Egyptians bare. There it is: you will cut off their whole economy here, and you will load up even your children, even the little ones, with whatever they can carry, all the gold ornaments. Go off, He says, like a hedgehog. Have you seen a hedgehog that climbs up, shakes the fruit down to the ground, and then rolls over on top of it and loads itself up and goes off carrying a great pile on its back? That is exactly how the Hebrews left. Now Moses is listening to all this, and this is being said at the bush; it is at the bush that all this is said. Moses answered and said: But behold, they will not believe me, they will not listen to my voice. For they will say, the Lord did not appear to you; we do not believe you.

Proof, that is — as if to say, I must produce something for them in order to convince them, because if I go and tell them these things they may even be taken for fairy tales, as the saying goes. He sent you, did He, He sent you, our Father, and this and that. And the Lord said to him: What is that in your hand? Now you were holding a staff as you went along. He was holding a staff — what could be more natural, a shepherd, holding what we would call a crook. What is that in your hand? What is that, He says to him, that you are holding? And he said: A rod. A staff, that is. And He said: Cast it on the ground. Throw that rod down. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent. It turned into a snake. And Moses fled from before it. He took to his heels, as the saying goes, when he saw that it had become a snake.

Anyone would have taken to their heels. And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch out your hand and take hold of it by the tail. That is, He tells him, grab it by the tail, that snake. And yet he does take hold of it, and stretching out his hand he seized it, and it became a rod in his hand. It turned back into a staff. You will do something like this, He says, there where you are going, so that they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers has appeared to you, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac — He still insists on it — the God of Jacob. And the Lord said to him further — because Moses thinks that he himself has to be persuasive, both for them to follow him and for Pharaoh to give in.

The Lord said to him further: Put, He says to him, your hand into your bosom — this thing I am doing now, put it under your arm, into your bosom, your hand — and he put his hand into his bosom. Now take it out, He says to him, take it out; and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow, covered with leprosy. That is, he drew it out from his breast, as we say, from right here, and he drew out leprosy. This is a great lesson. It is as if He were telling him: you, this is what you are, you are a sinful man. Are you going to do this work? I will be the one to do this work. I want to use you as an instrument, as a means. So because of that, understand this:

if ever God helps you to help someone else, to enlighten someone else, to guide someone else by the hand, or even to preach to some others, do not take it upon yourself as though the work were yours — I told him, I brought him round, I know how. Lies. It was not you. It was He, through you. The Lord did it. He opened your mouth. He was with you. He sent you, He told you what to say, He opened the nous, the spiritual intellect, and the heart of the other person; He is the one in the middle. And so, since Moses thought on his own account that on the strength of his cleverness, his knowledge, the languages he knew, the forty years he had spent in the palace with Pharaoh's daughter and so on, he was the one who would do the work — you, He says to him, are a sinful man; there is your leprosy. What are you imagining?

Put your hand into your bosom again — put it back in, He tells him, that leprous hand — and he put his hand into his bosom; now take it out again; and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was restored like the rest of his flesh. It was left again, it says, without a mark. This is what you are, He tells him; so step aside from yourself. I am not asking for your bright ideas, or your strength, or your cleverness — none of it. Then He goes on: And it shall be, said the Lord, if they will not believe you, and will not listen to the voice of the first sign — that is, if they pay no attention, I will throw down the rod and it will become a snake, since the devil can do that too — they will believe the voice of the second sign, that second thing that I did. And if they do not believe even these two signs,

nor listen to your voice, you shall take of the water of the river and pour it out on the dry ground. From the river Nile you will take water and pour it out on the dry ground. And the water which you shall take from the river shall become blood on the dry ground. From here begin, if you remember, what we call the plagues of Pharaoh, the ten plagues of Pharaoh. All these are signs which show the Egyptians and the Israelites that God really did send him — so that his own people would take notice and listen and obey and follow, and the others too would give in and let these people go to their homeland. And Moses said to the Lord — Moses is still stuck on it, still unwilling to go — I beseech You, Lord, I am not a man of ready speech

"...not since yesterday, nor the day before, nor since You spoke to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue." Here he is answering God back. Not since yesterday, he says, nor the day before — meaning, You ought to have known this; it isn't something that came upon me yesterday, so that You wouldn't know it, so that You wouldn't have found out that I cannot speak. He keeps insisting he is not the man to say these things, that he hasn't the words to outwit Pharaoh and get this people out of his hands. Once again he thought that this was what would do the job — his own ability. So our Lord cut him short at this point, as we say, and said to him: "Who gave man his mouth? Was it not I?"

"Or who makes the mute, or the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Go now, therefore. And I will be with you and with your mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do." Besides, as Paul says, My power is made perfect in weakness. When a man is fully equipped and he speaks and he gets things done, the power of God is not visible. The power of God shows in the one who has none of those qualifications, as we would put it in worldly terms — that is where the power of God is seen.

We do not count it as a gift of God to see, to speak, to hear — that these are a gift of God — and again we do not see that it is within God's plan, and that God is teaching something either to that person or to the people around that person. And a child is born who cannot speak, and a child is born who cannot see, and a child is born who cannot hear. God knows all of this beforehand. And a person should not rush in these cases. Because in our malice we rush to say bitter words against such people. No — it is of God. Besides, it makes no difference at all whether you have eyes; they can do you harm, and it is better not to have them if we are going to use them for evil.

The tongue as well — better not to have it, when we are going to use it for evil. The question about the whole matter of a human being is not what he has and what he does not have in this world; it is how he is going to use it in this world. Because one day he will pass through the melting furnace that is called death, and from there on no one comes out mute, or maimed, or blind. From there on they all come out new. And secondly, death — the graveyard, as it is called — is a blast furnace: it takes in everything rusted and brings it out new. We shall all rise tomorrow at one age, whether we believe it or not, whether we want it or not. We shall be made human again as God made us in the beginning; and we would know exactly how we shall be and what kind of body we shall have, if only we knew what Adam's body was like before the Fall, before the disobedience,

and if we knew what the body of our Christ was like after the Resurrection. But we know neither the one nor the other. In any case we expect that He will give us something new again, something immortal. Of course, as we were saying when we spoke about death, when a death happens we cover everything over with a black slab. Because we do not believe there is a Resurrection beyond the grave. That is why our expressions are, "We lost our loved one," "We lost our husband, our wife, our child." The word "I lost" belongs to objects, not to a human being. A human being is not lost. If only the Christian believed the prophecy that the Church reads when the Epitaphios comes back from the procession. If he only read that one prophecy — that is, believed it — the matter would be settled for him. But instead...

That is what a person believes, and that is exactly why he behaves the way he does. Someone will say, "How do you mean, I don't believe?" I don't know — the rest of the things you do around a dead person are idolatrous, they are the actions of an unbeliever. If you believed what we read there — in what manner we shall be made human again, how each one will take up his bones, how he will receive skin, sinews, a body, and then spirit — the matter would have been settled. But let me remind you of this prophecy.

Unfortunately it goes by unheeded; we rattle through it quickly so that we can leave — and you understand why nothing takes hold there. All we care about is passing underneath the Epitaphios, getting inside — all of it a pretense, really — and that is the whole of it. And yet there is a prophecy there which reminds a person in what manner he will be made human again.

The thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel says this — I will put it to you in the simplest way: "The hand of the Lord came upon me," says Ezekiel, "and the Lord brought me out in the Spirit, carried me, and set me down in the midst of a plain, and it was full of bones. And He made me pass by them round about, and behold, they were very many upon the face of the plain, and behold, they were very dry" — bones, the remains of human beings. "And He said to me: Son of man, can these bones live again?" Can these dry bones live? But he had the humility to say: Lord God, You know. What do I know, whether dry bones can become human beings again?

"And He said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will put spirit into you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and bring flesh up upon you, and cover you over with skin, and I will put spirit into you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord." That is what He told him to say. "And I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied there was a sound, a rumbling, and behold, a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to its own bone" — each one into its own place. Not mine going into someone else's place: each one into its own place. "And I saw sinews..."

A skeleton was formed, sinews went in, they were bound together in the middle — the sinews; when the sinews go in, everything is held together. "And I looked," he says, "and flesh came up upon them," and after that, after the flesh, skin. Skin covered them over, but there was no spirit in them — that is, now you have a vast cemetery, with remains, but not alive. They were dry bones; they were fitted together; then sinews came, flesh came, skin came, but for now it is only that. Like Adam, as God had formed him, before He had yet breathed into him. "And He said to me: Prophesy to the spirit" — they need souls as well — "Prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord God: Come, O spirit, and breathe upon these slain,

that they may live again. And I prophesied as I was commanded, and the spirit entered into them, and they lived, and they stood upon their feet, an exceedingly, exceedingly great army. And He said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel" — you, the Church, the world. "Behold, they say: Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are utterly cut off." He died — who ever came back from there? Our usual way of talking. "Therefore prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I open your graves, and I will bring you up out of your graves, and you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, O My people, and bring you up out of your graves. And I will put My Spirit into you, and you shall live, and I will set you

in your own land; and you shall know that I am the Lord. I have spoken, and I have done it, says the Lord." This prophecy is read among us Orthodox just as we come back inside, when we return with the Epitaphios. Neither the priest nor the chanter knows it, even though he is the one reading it — much less we, who are holding the Holy Week book in our hands. It lays everything open. How then is it possible for a person to go on disbelieving in these matters — not to disbelieve, rather, but to believe. So then, God says to him: Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? He is of the priestly line. I know that he can speak well. You do not speak well. And what is more, he is already coming out to meet you — God shows him that he is on his way.

Back then there were no telephones, nothing. "Wait for me, I'm on my way, come pick me up at the airport." This man — I don't know from where he set out with his camel, Aaron — is now on his way to meet Moses. Aaron, as I say, would have been in Egypt, and Moses was at Sinai; but in any case, God sees it all from above. "He is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you he will rejoice in his heart. And you shall put the words into his mouth." I will speak to you, and you will say them to him, and he will speak them out. Do you see? God used Moses as a go-between. You will ask me, why did He not say these things to Aaron directly? Say what you like — Aaron is not Moses. He may have been the high priest,

he may have had a gift from God, but he did not have Moses' simplicity of heart. And God comes into contact and speaks with the people He can come to an understanding with. That is why it shows clearly here how God often works. "I will speak to you," He says, "and you will put the words in his mouth. I will be with your mouth" — I will say it to you, and after that it goes out through his mouth. "And I will teach you what you are to do." So what are you afraid of? Look, your brother is coming — because Moses saw himself all alone there in the wilderness of Sinai. But once his brother the Levite comes, the thing is different. The two of them will be joined together. And

he will be the one to speak to the people in your place. I will say it to you, you will say it to him, and he will speak it out. As a result, the work will get done. "And he shall be to you instead of a mouth, and you shall be to him in the place of God." That is, I will speak through you: you be God to him, and you will direct Aaron to play your part. "And take in your hand this rod" — the one you had before — "with which you shall perform the signs." You know, this rod worked wonders later on as well; if we keep at it, God willing, we shall come to it. It worked a wonder at the sea, too. It was a type of the Precious Cross, cross-shaped, because the Red Sea itself became a cross. You will ask me, how did it become a cross? When the Red Sea lay closed, so to speak, and the people wanted to cross over from here to there,

he struck it, in this direction, with his rod; and the sea was parted, it became a wall of water, a fence standing here, the sea came up to here, you could see the water standing upright. And a wind blew — an east wind, it says — and the ground was dried, so that not even their feet would get muddy; and however many they were, they crossed over. So the sea stands on this side and on that. Now, to bring the two halves back together, what must he do? He must strike again: he struck once this way, and the second blow joins it again. One blow to divide it — that makes one beam of the Cross, the upright one; he divided it. Now He wants to join it again: He lays the other beam beside it. And doing this, he traces out the Cross. That is why the Church, in the katavasias, says that the sea was struck cross-wise. Of course, we who do not study and do not pay attention

do not grasp this thing, what it means to teach us, what it wants to remind us of. So this rod that God gave him and blessed, and with which he worked wonders, is a type of the Precious Wood, of the Precious Cross — as we chant, "Moses traced out the Cross." So then the Lord said to Moses in Midian: "Go, return to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead." Pharaoh, who had hunted you before — so go back to Egypt, and do not be afraid of them either. Once again He gives him this assurance, and then He goes on and tells him to speak to Pharaoh. And the Lord said to Aaron:

Go to meet Moses in the wilderness. And he went and met him at the mountain of God — at Sinai, that is — and kissed him. And Moses reported to Aaron all the words of the Lord with which He had sent him, and all the signs which He had commanded him. So Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the sons of Israel. And Aaron spoke all the words which the Lord had spoken to Moses, and he performed the signs before the people — the serpent, the leprosy, and the rest. And the people believed, when they heard that the Lord had heard their prayers,

that He had visited the sons of Israel, and that He had looked upon their affliction. And they bowed down and worshipped, after this message that had come to them. And after these things Moses and Aaron went in and spoke to Pharaoh. They set out — having first spoken with their own people, they set out for Pharaoh. They go to Pharaoh and say to him: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Let My people go, that they may keep a feast to Me in the wilderness. Set them free to go and worship, to celebrate the feast. But Pharaoh said: Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord,

and neither will I let Israel go. That was Pharaoh's answer. And they said: The God of the Hebrews has met with us — their own God, the God of the Hebrews, the one and only God. So let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness, to offer sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He come upon us with pestilence or with the sword. Notice this: they were to leave the cities and go three days' journey away, to offer their sacrifices as God had told them to — the Hebrews, that is. This shows that a person has to withdraw in order to pray. In the middle of the noise, in the middle of all this friction and the rest of it, it is hard for a person to pray; and that is why the best prayers are the prayers of the night. At night, prayer is the strongest prayer. A person feels that it is just himself and his God alone. He feels that God hears him, that He is not occupied at that hour. Of course, that is how a person feels, that is his sense of it — and the noises and the cares are a little further off. That is why people who want to have more to do with God go off into the desert, go off to holy monasteries, and so on. And we, because we cannot reach them, or even conceive of them, criticize them behind their backs. That is our malice; that is what we do. They asked to go three days' journey away, to make the sacrifices that the Hebrews used to make. But in any case, the king of Egypt said to them:

"Why, Moses and Aaron, do you draw the people away from their work?" You are ruining the work, you are stirring the people up to stop working and go off to pray, you want to turn them into idlers. Because that is what certain people think, that people who are religious are lazy, that work alone is what brings a man on in the world and makes him happy. But it is not so at all. If God does not bless the work, and if prayer does not come first, then no matter how productive that work may be, it is bound to fail. What did Peter say? "We toiled all night long and caught nothing; nevertheless at your word I will let down the net." And he cast it at midday. Here with us, when the moon is bright we find no fish, yet they took two boatloads of fish at midday. But when? When he had in his boat

Christ. Without Christ, all night long they caught nothing. With Christ, they caught. So prayer must always come first, in everything we set our hand to. So Pharaoh says, "Why have you come here as troublemakers, to rouse the people to leave their work?" And Pharaoh said, "Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them cease from their labors." And that same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, not the employers, the taskmasters, and their officers, saying, "You shall no longer give the people straw." That is to say: not only will I give you nothing, but I will create such conditions

that they will be worn out and will not want to listen to you, that they will have no heart to go and pray. Coming home in the evening from work, they will go and lie down, not go and pray. And whereas they used to be given the straw for making the bricks, now Pharaoh forbids that the straw be given. They will go and find the straw themselves, and they will still turn out the same number of bricks. You understand how deliberately the exhaustion of these people was increased, so that they would be forced to drive Aaron and Moses away: "Get out of here, you have been the ruin of us. Instead of relieving us, you have made us suffer more." "You shall lay upon them

the quota of bricks which they made before; you shall not diminish it at all." However many they used to turn out, that is how many they will turn out, for they are idle. There is no room for us to be idle. "And therefore they cry out, saying, Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God. Let the work of these men be made heavier, that they may be occupied with it and pay no attention to vain words." Prayers, to such men, are vain words, and this happens today as well. You know it, you see what goes on around these matters. Time off is given for useless things, but where something concerns a person's own soul, you set it down as laziness, as idling, as something superfluous. And there is discussion in countries whose economies are suffering, caught in a crisis, that we need work, we have need of labor. And yet you see the working hours cut short day by day.

Whole weekends go unused. Nowadays on Saturdays, as you have seen, various large organizations, banks and the like, are closed. From Friday midday they leave, and some of them do not come back until Tuesday.

That is, they often manage to skip over Monday as well. Saturday is theirs, Sunday is theirs, Monday afternoon is theirs. People manage very well indeed to leap over these days and take their fill. Wednesday afternoon free, and all the rest of it. So how is a person supposed to prosper? And yet, if there is any talk of a prayer, of a vigil, of anything of the kind, that is considered superfluous, that is considered something God does not want, something the economy does not want, since we must work in order to live. But is this not simply a contrivance of people who do not have the Spirit of God?

So it says that the taskmasters of the people and the officers went and spoke to the people, and so on. They even flogged certain men who could not produce that quota. For when a man has to go and gather straw until midday, how is he going to have time in the afternoon to turn out the rest of that quota of bricks they had imposed on him? And the answer he is given is, "You are idle, you are idle, and that is why you say, Let us go," and the rest of it. And so the matter was dropped. We go further, and once again it is Moses who has the word. And the Lord said to Moses, He tells him now, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand he shall let them go, and with a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land." I shall take them, He says, by force. "With a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land." I shall take them out by main force.

God spoke thus to Moses and said to him, "I am the Lord. And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Lord I was not made known to them," God says. "And I established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land where they sojourned," and so forth. He makes the promise of what is to come to pass when they cross over there. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land." And Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, "Behold, the children of Israel have not listened to me; how then shall Pharaoh listen to me, seeing that I am of uncircumcised lips?" Not even my own people, he says, have any confidence now, after everything those men have done to them.

My own people have no confidence to follow me. How am I to go now and speak to Pharaoh? Things are getting harder, and now it is as though God steps in with power. Again the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, the Lord said to Moses, "I am the Lord. Speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt," go, "all that I say to you." And Moses said before the Lord, "Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips," again, that is. He was trying God's patience, you understand. Think what God's patient endurance is, His forbearance, His long-suffering, that He waits for us in this way. After all those signs He had worked, still the man does not want to go over there. And the Lord said to Moses, "I have made you a god to Pharaoh," I have appointed you

and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet. You will speak to your brother, and he will say it aloud. "You shall speak all that I command you, and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh." And it goes on. Whatever Pharaoh says to you, He tells him, I am telling you this too: he will not give in, he will not let them go, but you are to go forward all the same. "And I will lay my hand upon Egypt." And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and did as God had told them. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. Pharaoh drew back. And Pharaoh called for the wise men, his own men, his magicians, and the magicians of Egypt did the same with their enchantments. In this way they too made the rod appear as a serpent.

And here are the secret things that other people do not know. "I saw the vigil lamp, and it was swaying. I touched the icon, and it gave a crack. I saw Christ, I saw the Most Holy Theotokos, and she spoke to me," and I wrote it all down in all seriousness. What is the proof that it was the Lord, that it was the Most Holy Theotokos, and that none of this has anything to do with the devil? Behold the rod. Whatever miracle God works, the devil works it too, and he presents it before a man's eyes; the rod became a serpent. So the Lord took that argument away from Satan at once. For it says, "They cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods." It goes further; the case goes to appeal, as it were. Do you understand?

This is what should happen in our own cases: turn and say, "My Most Holy Theotokos, if it is really you in that vigil lamp," and see how the lamp will stop, "my Lady." That is how the one we know, the master craftsman himself, came. There, you see, theirs became a serpent, but the other serpent swallowed it up, and God remained the victor in that case. But we rely on our own knowledge, when instead we ought to ask for more, that He would give us illumination as to what it was, what I saw, what I heard, what I go on hearing, what I write down. Everyone here has turned into a scribe now. That is what they have become: they write gospels, they write all sorts of things, opinions, men and women alike, writings that have nothing whatever to do with God, and they write and write and write.

The writing itself tells you. Look carefully to see whether it is from God, whether it is from the Most Holy Theotokos, from Christ, and so on. This is a delusion that is known throughout the world today. It is the third delusion, and it is the greatest delusion of the ages, precisely because it is a delusion bound up with the Most Holy Theotokos. The Most Holy Theotokos does not save; Christ saves. And they have pushed the Most Holy Theotokos out in front. Yet she herself never wanted a school of the Most Holy Theotokos. In the Church there is the school of Christ, not some second school of the Most Holy Theotokos. She herself was saved there, and it is from there that she draws everything. How am I to stand there? There is a great lesson here: yes, those men managed to do this too, but Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods. It ruined them, it undid them. And yet, as you know, in spite of all these serpents Pharaoh still did not let the people go. And so the matter goes further.

So Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded. Aaron lifted up his rod and struck the waters of the river in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, and all the waters of the river were turned into blood. There it is, the whole river blood. The fish in the river died. The river stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water out of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. You understand the position Pharaoh was now in, and yet even so he did not yield. For a moment he bent, he asked that God be entreated to turn the thing back, and it was done; but he did not give in. In any case the matter goes on further. The Lord said to Moses, Say to Aaron:

"Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams, over the rivers, over the pools, and bring up the frogs upon the land of Egypt." And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. And the magicians did likewise; with their enchantments they too brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt. Then it says that Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Entreat the Lord," and so Pharaoh called for them. Here it does not tell us what became of those frogs the others had produced; but in any case, they too on their own side put on this display of frogs.

He begged Moses and Aaron to entreat the Lord to take the frogs away from him and from his people, "and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the Lord." And Moses said to Pharaoh, "Appoint a time for me, when I am to make supplication for you and for your servants," tell me when you want it, "and for your people, that the frogs may be destroyed from you and from your houses, and remain only in the river." And they said, "Tomorrow." And indeed the next day it happened; there was not a single frog left. But the upshot was that he did not follow through. In any case it goes on, and God works yet another wonder against Pharaoh: He sent flies, a swarm of flies that filled the whole of Egypt.

And they did not repent, they did not change.

The livestock, and all the animals die off. They had funerals for them, as we were saying. And still he did not give way. Again God brings a swarm of flies, another swarm, but He says that an exception will be made in the land of Goshen, where His people dwell: there will be the swarm, but it will not touch my own people. That is one more thing again. Just as there is another case further on: a darkness came, three days long, a darkness that could be felt, and while the Egyptians could not get up from their houses and go outside but sat there, rooted to the spot, every Hebrew house had light. God, and this too is a sign of God's omnipotence, and it is the same here.

There was a certain area where they had settled and where they lived, a Hebrew quarter, we might call it, and there was not a fly there. But again they made their entreaty, the swarm went away, and again he did not give in. He was mocking God, in effect. Well, in any case, next it says here that God strikes again, and again He makes the distinction. The livestock, all the animals die off, and from the Hebrews not one was lost. The Lord did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but of the livestock of Israel not one died. This too is no small thing; it is a great thing. You see so many miracles, and still a person's heart hardens. You understand there are many such people. And there are such people today as well.

Then afterwards a fine dust fell, and it brought this about: the whole of Egypt and all the Egyptians were covered with boils. You understand the state they were in. And once again he begged God in every sort of way to lift it, to heal it, and then God consented. And again he did not give way, and the arguments go on. But I see the time is getting away from me, and I must stop here. In its broad lines, though, what is shown here, and we would want you to know this, is the long-suffering of God, the way God reproves a person. He wants no one to be lost, but a person makes bad use of God's long-suffering and God's kindness. Some believe that there is no God, or that God is not able to act. He does exist, and He is able, but He is long-suffering.

We ourselves put God to the test many times, just as Pharaoh put Him to the test, until in the end God took the people out by force — and that only after everything else had been exhausted. And that is exactly where the real questions lie: what salvation is, and how a person is saved. That is why I gave this whole introduction from the very beginning of these three lessons, so that we would arrive at this point and you would see what it is that was prepared, from the Old Testament onward, for the salvation of mankind, and then the New Testament, when He Himself came.

όταν εγώ υπάγω προς τους υιούς Ισραήλ και είπω προς αυτούς, ο Θεός των πατέρων μας με απέστειλε προς εσάς, και εκείνοι με ερωτήσουσι, τι είναι το όνομα αυτού, πώς τον λένε αυτόν τον Θεό, τι θέλω ειπεί προς αυτούς;

ποτέ ο Θεός σας βοηθήσει να βοηθήσετε κάποιον άλλον, να διαφωτίσετε κάποιον άλλον, να χειραγωγήσετε κάποιον άλλον, μα να κηρύξετε και σε κάποιους άλλους, ότι μην το πάρετε επάνω σας, ότι είναι δικό σας το έργο και του είπα εγώ και τον έφερα βόλτα εγώ και ξέρεις εγώ. Ψέματα. Όχι εσείς. Αυτός δι' αυτού. Ο Κύριος έκανε. Αυτός σου άνοιξε το στόμα. Αυτός ήταν μαζί. Αυτός σε απέστειλε, αυτός σου είπε τι να πεις, αυτός διήνοιξε τον νου από εκεί και την καρδία, αυτός είναι στη μέση. Όπως εσύ νόμιζα λοιπόν από αυτού του, ότι με βάση την εξυπνάδα του, τη γνώση του, τις γλώσσες που ήξερε, 40 χρόνια που έμενε στο παλάτι παρά τη θυγατέρα του Φαραώ και λοιπά, ότι αυτός θα κάνει τη δουλειά, αυτός εσύ, του λέει, άνθρωπος αμαρτωλός, λέπρα έτσι. Τι υποτίθεσαι;

από χθες, ούτε από προχθές, ούτε αφ' ότου ελάλησες προς τον δούλο σου, αλλά είμαι βραδύστομος και βραδύγλωσσος, τον παρατηρεί εδώ το Θεό, ούτε από χθες, του λέει, ούτε από προχθές, θα έπρεπε να το ξέρεις δηλαδή ότι εγώ δεν έπαθα χθες τη δουλειά αυτή ώστε να μην το ξέρεις, να μην το μάθεις ότι εγώ δεν μπορώ να μιλήσω, δεν πρέπει να τα πω, δεν πρέπει να τα πω, δεν πρέπει να τα πω, δεν πρέπει να τα πω, δεν π Αυτό, ώστε να μπερδέψω τον Φαραώ, να του πάρω τον λαόν αυτόν. Πάλι αυτός εν νόμιζε εδώ, πάλι, ότι αυτό πάλι θα την κάνει τη δουλειά. Του κλεισεύρεξε βέβαια, κατά το δη λεγόμενον, ο Κύριός μας εδώ, στο σημείο αυτό, και του είπε· «Τις έδωκε το στόμα εις τους ανθρώπους; Δεν το έδωσα εγώ;
