Summary
After the Resurrection, Pentecost, and All Saints, the lecture recalls Christ calling Simon Peter, Andrew, James, and John to leave their nets and become fishers of men. Reconciliation with Christ requires sincere repentance and sacramental confession, through which the Holy Spirit grants forgiveness despite the personal unworthiness of the priest. God’s present patience invites conversion, but divine judgment remains real, so believers are urged to cleanse the soul now and prepare faithfully for the Kingdom of Heaven.

We are now beyond the great events of the Resurrection and Pentecost, and have entered the period of preparation for the feast of the Holy Apostles. We have celebrated the feast of All Saints, and now we encounter Christ during His public ministry, calling His first disciples. He called two pairs of brothers: Simon and his brother Andrew, and John and James.
These two pairs of brothers were men of the sea. Until then they had been catching fish, creatures without reason; now they were called to catch rational beings—that is, human beings. “Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Solomon—in his wisdom, speaking of this great work, this great calling, this great mission and honor—says, “He who saves souls is wise”: first, of course, his own soul, and then, if he can, the soul of someone else. The soul is what endures beyond the grave.
However precious the things of this world may be, they do not pass beyond the grave. The soul endures beyond the grave. Sadly, most people have not understood that the human being is chiefly spirit and not merely flesh; by the way they live, they act against their own true nature. The road is difficult, but it is blessed. I marvel at how those fishermen had the discernment to leave everything and follow someone who promised them nothing in this world. “Leaving behind,” the Gospel says, “their nets, their boat, and their fishing gear.”
They left their families as well, because when they left their livelihood, they also left their families, and followed One who had promised them nothing in this world. That is the most astonishing thing. But the human being is not governed by reason alone. If someone wishes to live by ordinary reason alone, he should not become a Christian. He should remain merely a worldly, material-minded person. “Then how should he live?” someone may ask. “Should he live irrationally rather than rationally?” No. He should live beyond ordinary reason. Christianity is neither rationalism nor irrationality; it transcends reason. It is something higher, and another spiritual faculty is needed in order to perceive it.
Many people in university chairs, drawing rooms, and positions of authority do not possess this spiritual faculty, while men out at sea possessed it. It is a great thing for a person to understand his calling, because everything around us proclaims that there is no other life, that the human being is merely material and not also spiritual.
The message is that the human being belongs only to this world, and even many so-called Christians have failed to grasp the truth about this. If a person were to reflect deeply upon where he truly belongs, he would be overcome with awe. And if he were not overcome with awe, he would regard it as such a tremendous honor to belong where he truly belongs—if indeed he does belong there—that his eyes should...
...pour forth tears of gratitude every day. It is said that once a devout king went out for a walk to ease his mind a little. He put on the clothes of an ordinary man so that no one would recognize him as the king and trouble him even there with greetings and formalities. Eventually he came upon three little children playing carefree in his kingdom. He counted them blessed when he saw the innocent simplicity of their play, while his own mind was burdened with cares and responsibilities. He stopped. They noticed him and stirred a little, but then continued their game. After a while, he ventured to ask them a question.
Picking a flower from the ground, he asked, “Can you tell me which kingdom this flower belongs to?” One lively little boy immediately answered, “The plant kingdom, sir.” “Well done, my child! Well done! My congratulations.” The children, of course, did not know they were speaking with the king. Then the king took a coin from his pocket and showed it to them—as if one of us today were to take out a ten-cent coin, for example—and asked, “Which kingdom does this belong to?” The second child quickly answered, “The mineral kingdom, sir.” “Well done, my child, well done.” Then he paused and asked them a third question: “And which kingdom do I belong to?” The children fell silent.
They drew a breath—fortunately, they did not say, “the animal kingdom.” Then the third child answered, “Where else? The Kingdom of God, sir.” The king was struck to the heart. “Well done, my child. But if I truly belong to the Kingdom of God, pray that I may indeed remain in the Kingdom of God.” Many of us belong simply to the animal kingdom. Others belong to the mineral kingdom, and still others to the realm of wood and trees. Inwardly they are hard and stony. There are people whose hearts are like marble or iron. There are still people with hearts merely of flesh, not spiritual hearts. Few today truly belong to the Kingdom of God, although Christ came forth—as you heard—and preached today, saying:
“Repent, believe in the Gospel, and come into My Kingdom.” Today Christ proclaimed a Kingdom, yet it passes unnoticed. People occupy themselves only with their flesh, their pleasures, and this world, not with the world to come. For the most part, people do not believe in life beyond the grave.
They have not been there, yet some declare with absolute certainty that there is nothing beyond the grave—as though they themselves had gone beyond it. You may remember what I told you in the car, as we came around that bend, about the little girl and her grandfather. The grandfather was declaring with great authority, “Stop wasting your words. There is nothing beyond the grave.” The little girl immediately spoke up and said to him, “Grandfather, have you ever died?”
“How do you know there is nothing beyond the grave?” Blessed is the person who understands this, and blessed is the person who chooses, while still in this world, to prepare for the world to come. My dear ones, as you know, the human being did not come into this world simply to make a living. Some people say that they work for their daily bread. What daily bread? The bread in the words, “Give us this day”? The true Bread—the One called epiousios—is He who is upon the Holy Table. Are you living merely for the bread eaten by mice, ants, dogs, cats, and birds, though they do not work for it? Woe to you; that is not what you were made for. The human being is not meant to remain here. The human being is not a permanent inhabitant of the earth, as our great writers say and as we constantly repeat. He is only a tenant on earth, and one day he will receive his notice of eviction.
It will come at an unsuspected hour, when he does not expect it, and woe to him if he is not ready. The human being did not come into the world merely to live; he came into the world to die, and he dies in order to live. Of that Kingdom there shall be no end; this earthly kingdom will come to an end. The grave is not the end, but the beginning of another life—a life that will have no end and whose condition depends upon this life. Compared with eternity, even if this world were to last countless millions of years, it would be no more than a firefly, nothing at all beside eternity. And yet this life has consequences for eternity. Therefore, a person must live accordingly. Christ, then, preached the Gospel. Christ did not preach politics. He did not preach self-interest. He did not preach the flesh, the world, or the ego.
He preached the Kingdom of Heaven. To become an eternal citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven, a person must be enrolled as its citizen while still here. The enrollment takes place here, and here the human being is prepared for the Kingdom of Heaven. We have all fallen among thieves, and we come here to the inn and entrust ourselves to the innkeepers, so that they may tend our wounded souls and make them able to stand in eternity. Here the nature of the human being is changed. Here the earthly person becomes spiritual. Here the temporary is betrothed to eternity. Here the mortal becomes immortal—here, within the Church. We are prepared for the Kingdom of Christ through Christ’s Orthodox Church and through the Mysteries. Woe to the person who regards the Church as a mere secondary concern.
Woe to the person who sees the Church as a priest-run shop or as a business. No! The Church is the hospital that prepares souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. The blood of Adam flows through the human being—counterfeit blood, unfit for the Kingdom of Heaven. A Kingdom requires royal children, and human beings must have their blood changed and become children of the King. That is why we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, Christ the King, so that we may become royal children, entitled to a Kingdom, and be among those to whom He will one day say, “Come and inherit the Kingdom of My Father.” Ordinary human beings do not inherit the Kingdom; new human beings do. That is why I wonder how you regard this way of preparing princes and princesses for the Kingdom of Heaven.
A person must make every effort to come to the Church and remain within the Church, his mother. For if he does not regard the Church as his mother, he cannot have God as his Father and Christ as his Brother. Human being, if you wish to have God as your Father and Christ as your Brother, you must have the Church as your mother. She came to you through her clergy when you entered this world, received you, and offered her prayers for the mother who had given birth. She will accompany you when you depart from this world and pray over you, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” And she will continue to accompany you where you are going, until the end of the age. The Orthodox Church, the one Church, has the power, the authority, and the love to accompany human beings even beyond the grave, until the Second Coming.
The other so-called churches do not have this. In Roman Catholicism, once you die, that is the end of it. There is no offering, no kollyva, no sacrifice, no help—nothing. For the Protestant, once you die, that is the end of it. For them there is nothing beyond the grave. The same is true of anyone belonging to any heresy or any other so-called church. Only the Orthodox Church accompanies the human being beyond the grave, helping him and putting the finishing touches on him. Do you know what retouching means? She completes the details that we so often failed to complete here. That is why I wish to tell you: love the way by which you can become royal children beginning here and now. We are speaking of a Kingdom. We will not inherit vineyards, fields, or money. We will be with the King and the Queen and the royal children.
Just as there is a material firmament—the sun, the moon, and the stars—so there is also a spiritual firmament: Christ, the Theotokos, and the Saints. Today we are the Church militant, striving to become one day the Church triumphant. We are to leave the candle stand below and rise to the chandelier above. If a person wishes to return to the Kingdom of God, prepared from the foundation of the world, the only way is through the Church and an encounter with Jesus through what is called the Beautiful Gate. I do not know whether you have ever considered this: it is called the Beautiful Gate not because it is more attractive than the two side doors, but because through it souls enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Here the soul will meet Christ; here it will commune with Him, receive Christ, and become one with Him. And from here it will pass into the Kingdom of Heaven.
If someone tries to enter by any other way, he will not be able to pass through. You see, many people say that they will enter in their own way: “I will not confess. I will not repent. I will not receive Holy Communion. I want nothing to do with priests. I want nothing to do with the Church. I refuse all of it. But I am a good person, and I will go to the Kingdom of Heaven.” You are deceived. Unless you pass through here, you cannot pass through anywhere else.
That is precisely why the two side doors, the northern and the southern, bear images of archangels with swords, saying, “Not this way, gentlemen; through the middle.” “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” This is where you must go. You cannot pass through the side doors. We stand there and say, “Outside are the sexually immoral, adulterers, thieves, and all such people—everyone outside.” You must pass through the Beautiful Gate. You must go and speak with Him, be reconciled with Him, and let Him give you His Body and Blood and transform your nature, so that He may prepare you for the Kingdom of Heaven. This is what takes place here. This is the gate of mercy, the gate of metanoia—repentance—and of the human being’s return. It is the only way for...
The only way for a person to return to Paradise is to be reconciled with Christ in this world. The way is simple. When Christ rose from the dead, that very evening He gave the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of people’s sins—here in this world. “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Apart from this, there is no other way for sins to be forgiven.
A person finds all kinds of excuses not to surrender his sins. He does not repent of them; he does not confess them. He looks for other ways, but he is mistaken. It is Satan who prompts people to accuse priests of lacking the worthiness and power to forgive sins. But the forgiveness of sins does not depend on the priest; it depends on grace. The priest does not accomplish the Mystery by his own power. The priest himself may be a sinner.
The miracle of the forgiveness of sins takes place through the Mystery. Judas was holy at first. Have you heard that Judas performed no miracles? Does the Gospel say that Judas had been deprived of grace? No. God does not ordain everyone, but He works through everyone whom He ordains. In some people, the devil arouses shame: “Am I really going to go? Can I tell these things to the priest?” So you were able to do them, were you? But now you cannot speak of them?
You could swallow the poison, but now you cannot vomit it out? If you contract a venereal disease, will you not go and show the affected parts of your body? You will not simply hide somewhere. You will show them. Will you remain there and let yourself rot? What will you do? Even if your body rots, that is nothing by comparison; if you rot spiritually, you lose eternity. Do you not think of that? All these are the devil’s devices. First, in order to get us into his grasp, he takes away our shame; afterward, so that we will not escape his grasp, he gives the shame back to us.
You know that striking story about people waiting to go to confession, when the priest suddenly stopped and came out? He addressed the people waiting there, although they could not see that someone was among them, and said, “What do you want there?” They saw no one. “What is happening? You there—the tall one—what do you want?” They did not understand. “In the name of Jesus Christ, you tall one there, what do you want?” Then they saw a tall figure among them, with his head bowed. They were terrified. “What are you? Speak, so that everyone here may hear.” “I am Satan.” Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos! Satan here? Where else would Satan go—to the vineyards? He will come here, when you are about to confess, to drive you away from confession, to fill you with shame and one excuse after another. Where else would Satan go? “Speak, so that the people may hear. Why have you come here?” “I came,” he said, “to give them something.” “What are you giving them?” “Something I had taken from them.” “What had you taken?” “I had taken away their shame.” “Why?” “So that they would sin.” “And what are you doing now?” “I am giving it back.” “Why?” “So that they will be ashamed to tell you their sins and will remain mine.” These are Satan’s devices. But people do not want to hear about them. They hide.
“Let it be just the two of us, where no one can see us or hear us, and no one will ever know. Be careful: whatever we said between ourselves is buried here—gone like water and salt.” Really? You two know it; no one else does? Does the devil not know? Does your angel not know? Does your conscience not know? At the very moment you sin, three pens are writing. First, the devil writes it down; and unless you have it erased through confession, he will carry the record until the hour of your death and present it against you. Your conscience writes it down. How will you answer your conscience? The Angel writes it down. When a person does evil, three write; when he does good, two write. His conscience records the good, and so does the Angel; the devil does not. The devil does not record good deeds. He records evil so that he may present it on the Day of Judgment. In old churches—and here above the iconostasis, over the Holy Doors—an ear, an eye, and a pen are always depicted.
The ear is God’s ear, which hears everything, wherever you may be hidden and whatever you may say. The eye sees everything, wherever you may be, in whatever darkness or solitude. You sin before God Himself, who is everywhere present and fills all things. And the pen records everything. If a person possessed this fear of God, he would take care not to sin at all.
He would sin only a little; or if, in human weakness, he did sin and fall, he would rise again. “To fall is human; to remain fallen is satanic,” says John Chrysostom. You may fall—you are human. You slipped, someone pushed you, you were careless, you did not know, you were inexperienced; perhaps you had some excuse, and you fell. But get up. Do not blame the physicians and remain lying there. To fall is human, but to remain fallen is satanic.
One sin is deadly: for a person to fall into despair, or to convince himself and others that there is nothing beyond this life and no path to salvation. No! Good is never defeated by evil—never. It is impossible for Satan to defeat Christ. Satan’s malice cannot overcome the mercy of Christ. If, for example, I were burdened with every sin—from the sins of Cain the fratricide and of every sinner throughout all the ages, even to the end of time—one tear of metanoia, of repentance, would be enough to wipe them all away. But the repentance must be sincere, not dry and lifeless like ours. If we could record our confessions, we would discover that they are always the same.
We do not uproot our sins; we merely prune them. The roots remain. We confess on Holy Thursday so that we can do the same things again on Holy Saturday. We confess on the eve of Christmas so that we can do the same things afterward, and so on. We do not change our lives. We are amphibious creatures—one moment in the mire and the next moment out of it. We do not distance ourselves from the causes of sin, and therefore we are not ready at every moment for the Kingdom of Heaven. If a person truly understood, if he reflected deeply and saw that there is no such thing as the present, he would die of shock. The present does not exist. Whatever I am saying has already entered the past, and whatever I am about to say belongs to the future. In a fraction of a second, I may no longer exist. Who promises me that I will have time to repent and confess?
Who promises me that I will still exist a little while from now? Then Satan comes along, that great pretender of generosity: he steals the present from us—a present that scarcely exists, poised on a knife’s edge—and promises us the future. “Next year. Leave it until tomorrow. Leave it until next year. Wait until you are older. Later, you can confess everything at once.” But who promises you that time? And when tomorrow becomes today, he promises you the following day. He robs you again and again, and some people remain unrepentant and without confession for many years. Christ does not ask for our money. Christ does not ask for our wife, our husband, our children, or our work. Christ asks for our filth, and we refuse to give it to Him. To say the least, people today are foolish.
I do not want to say anything worse about them. They are very foolish. A person holds nothing securely in his hands. He is suspended between heaven and earth, between the past and the future; he ought to tremble. Yet he reflects on none of this. As you see every day, thousands of people—even entire communities—depart for heaven in all sorts of ways, especially through the modern means of our day. Whole groups of friends and entire families perish together through the countless inventions we have made and brought upon our own heads, because today we have made ourselves wings like ants. You leave home and do not know whether you will return. In the past, perhaps you had a ten-percent chance of not returning; now you have no certainty at all that you will return. If God wills, you will return. And yet a person does not insure himself. He insures his car, his house, and his property, paying premiums even when he sometimes does not have enough money to
buy the insurance and leaves the car uninsured. Then he may have an accident and go to prison, while others say, “The way he was, he deserved it for not having insurance.” But did you ask whether he could afford to insure it? Did you ask? Did you ask what debts and installments he had to pay? Did you? Perhaps he meant to manage for a month, two months, or a year until he could get through the difficulty. But have you insured your soul, when that costs no money at all? To safeguard the soul both for this passing life and for eternity costs nothing. Yet a person condemns someone else because his car or shop was uninsured, without asking why he failed to insure it, while never condemning himself for leaving his own soul uninsured. My beloved, God shows patient endurance, as you know. But one day the curtain will fall, and woe to the person who has not taken care to put his affairs in order here.
Our affairs are put in order here, in this place where we now stand, through the intercessions of the Theotokos, so that Christ may give us His Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. If a person refuses to settle his sins here, one day he will face Christ’s justice there. Christ is not one-sided, as some imagine. Christ is love. And who ever told you that Christ is not love? But Christ is also justice. Why do you take away that other aspect of Christ and present Him only as love? God is good. And who told you He is evil? But God is also just. If you refuse to put your affairs in order here, you will face divine justice. Those of you who travel with us will have heard what I have said about the bishop’s throne: although oil lamps burn everywhere else here,
no oil lamp burns above the bishop’s throne. Why? Because here there is mercy; there, there is judgment. Judgment is without mercy. That is what it reminds us of. Woe to you if you do not put your affairs in order here and then come before My justice there to be judged. There is no mercy there. This is why the Church places no lamp above the bishop’s throne: to remind people that at the Judgment there is no mercy. At the feet of the holy and honorable Forerunner there is also an axe. This represents the justice of God. God’s justice is not being exercised now, though some demand it: “Where is God?” If God’s justice were being exercised now, He would already have put out many of your eyes, cut off many pairs of your ears, and cut off many of your noses. For we see the faults of others, but not our own, and
we call upon God to deal with others, but not with ourselves. Yet God’s justice is not being exercised now. That is why we can blaspheme Him and He does not strike us; we can insult Him with hands and feet and He does not retaliate. Instead, He waits for each person to return. But woe to us when He takes that axe in His hand. He will stand at that Judgment, and then there will be no mercy. Therefore, while there is still time, while the Most Holy Theotokos still holds back the heavens, while the Saints still hold back the heavens, let us live as we ought. Paul says, “Do you not know that the goodness of God leads us to metanoia, to repentance?” Do you not understand, he says, that God’s patient endurance is helping you to repent? Why do you let Satan deceive you into thinking that you will remain in this life forever? You are not here forever; your life is temporary. So take care while daylight remains—while your life here remains, though you do not know how long it will be.
Prepare yourself. It costs nothing. Repent, confess, and so on. You fell; you will fall again. It is not the end of the world. You became dirty and went to wash; a little later you became dirty again, so you will wash again. You became dirty once more, and once more you will be cleansed. Those who are careful become less soiled, but both the careful and the careless must wash. The Church is not concerned only with outward things; above all, She is concerned with what is within. We all look at ourselves in the mirror two or three times and consider what undergarments and outer garments we will wear to Church, but we do not examine our souls. This is why, when we visit holy shrines and find a fountain of blessed water, there is often a phrase written above it that reads the same backward and forward: “Wash your transgressions, not only your face.” Wash away, it says, the filth of your soul—your transgressions—not only your outward appearance. I will pour water for you to wash.
God grants us the grace to find ourselves in moments such as these. We must take care to be edified as much as possible. There is something in human beings that is not good: habit, and especially bad habit.
We have grown accustomed to treating both serious and ordinary things in much the same way. That is not right. We must approach everything with the appropriate attention and due reverence. What we are encountering at this moment is something serious—something profoundly serious.
For a person is being given an opportunity to examine himself.
It is the thermometer God has placed in human hands. It is the mirror God has left so that people may see the condition of their souls. This holy relic here is the means He gives a person to test his faith. Yet most of us passed by and venerated it with such carelessness.
When a person finds himself in such a moment, he must consider its two sides, for every coin has two sides: one is salvation and the other is perdition. If he grasps what is happening and thinks seriously about what it is, why it is here, from whom it comes, and to whom it speaks, then he will be edified. The event becomes beneficial. But if he acts merely out of habit...
if he simply lights a candle and passes the event by, then it becomes a cause of loss. These things do not happen by chance. They do not come from human foresight, human cleverness, human knowledge, or human love. They come from God. In His love, God has left us what we are encountering at this very hour, giving us the opportunity to understand that something exists beyond what we see, hear, feel, perceive, taste, and touch. Here reason stops; science stops; human knowledge stops. This is neither rational nor irrational; it is beyond reason. Something greater is taking place. A person is compelled to stop and say:
“Tell me, what is this, and why is it here?” It is for you, my dear, for you—to help you in yet another way, so that perhaps you may understand that death is not the end. Death and the grave are not the end; something lies beyond them. Sit down and reflect on that. Many people try to explain these things through reason, but they cannot be explained by reason. Neither can the relic of Saint John the Russian, nor those of the many other Saints whom God has left within our Orthodox faith. People pass by and have the pressure of their faith measured. Just as we go to a doctor, who performs a test and tells us our blood pressure, or we have a checkup to see the state of our health, so it is here. Once again, a person is given an opportunity, if only he pays attention.
He will see that things are not as people claim. This man lived just as we do. He ate, drank, slept, spat, felt pain and sorrow, hoped, became ill and recovered, breathed oxygen, saw sunlight and darkness—in every way he was like us. Many people do not realize that one day they will depart, and at an unexpected hour, and that they must be ready and make good use of their time here. They devote all their efforts to enjoying this world, improving this world, establishing themselves in this world, and acquiring possessions—to turn what is yours into what is mine, and what belongs to them into what belongs to us. They imagine that this is everything, and others applaud them for having succeeded. This is in contrast to those who care less about material things, the flesh, the world, self-interest, and the ego.
They concern themselves with something else, something unseen: the soul. And they are regarded as failures. If this man had once said, “A time will come when people will venerate me...” They would have replied, “You? People will venerate you?” “Listen to me: you, living in a stable, will be venerated.” “Yes, they will venerate me.” He would have thought it a joke. Yet kings have passed through here, presidents of republics, people with many degrees and great learning, and they have made a prostration before him and lit a candle. How, then, did he succeed in this while living in a stable? That is the secret. He received a seal: the seal of Christ upon his forehead and the seal of Christ within his heart. And when Christ places His seal upon a person, that person endures so firmly that every knee, even the most unyielding, bows before him. That is the wonder. And there is something else in such cases...
When another person’s record closes, the record of the Saint begins to open. He had no public record here. He did not visit hospitals or prisons, or minister to widows and orphans, and so forth. He did not pursue the kind of outward philanthropy behind which we so often hide. He cultivated his inner self in depth and sought to receive Christ into his soul. And whoever receives Christ into his soul is raised by Christ upon a lampstand, so that all nations may venerate him. I am reminded of those beautiful words spoken by the Most Holy Theotokos in the hill country, before the elderly Elizabeth: “From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” You? All generations will call you blessed? They will call me blessed? You, who cannot read, who have no credentials, who cannot play the piano, who do not know how to present yourself in society? And yet all generations will call me blessed. Why? Because she would become the throne of Christ, the King of all.
Whoever becomes Christ’s throne here is afterward made by Christ a throne before all other people. We do not see these things. And look how much labor, anxiety, tribulation, and exhaustion people undergo today in order to succeed in this world. To gain what? What will they take with them? Nothing—nothing at all. Why can they take nothing? Because they brought nothing into the world; they have no right to keep it. My Christian, you are living in a rented house, in a rented room, and you will leave it with the telephone and furniture just as you found it, and you will depart. If you cause damage, you will even be punished and taken before the authorities. It is exactly the same in this world, yet people fail to understand it. A man who appears to sit with folded hands, but has Christ in his heart, sustains the world while standing on one leg, like a resting bird. This whole world is kept alive by someone who was regarded as idle.
Look at all these people, all these buses, and all this activity, because of one man who served as a stable hand to a Turkish agha. Why? Because he placed Christ within himself. This is Christ, who gives value even to rags—yes, to rags. Anyone who has visited the Hels works and seen how banknotes are made knows that they are made from rags. But they bear the seal of the state, and that gives them value. So it is in this case as well. Blessed are those who place Christ within their souls in this world—not only in the world to come. It begins here, and what is there is its continuation. I repeat, therefore: the person of Christ is not an idler, a lazy man, or someone useless to this world, as some imagine. He is a benefactor.
Let the one who knows speak, for we do not know. History has not preserved, nor could anyone ever know, all the miracles this Saint has performed: the countless people he has helped, the married couples he has reconciled, the children he has brought back, and the homes he has restored after they had been broken apart by the world, modernist ideology, and the devil; the people he has brought home from foreign lands. This alone would be enough for him to rise before us and preach to us at this very hour. We could sit here for many years listening to the wondrous things Christ has done through this simple man during the more than three hundred years that he has been in the grave—as we suppose, though in truth he remains at Christ’s disposal. So let each of us reflect at this moment and thank Christ for granting us the grace to receive assurance through our own senses.
You should know that the Saint did not remain here for the sake of believers. Believers have no need of miracles; they believe without miracles. This is for unbelievers and those who struggle to believe. It is, as it were, Christ’s hand extended through the ages: incorrupt bodies enduring for centuries, so that people may come, place their finger upon them, and become not unbelieving but believing. Yet they will not be called blessed by Christ, just as Thomas was not, for he heard: “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Yes, what lies there is a double-edged sword: a double-edged sword for those who see—woe to them if, even when compelled by what they see, they still do not believe—and also for those who see and whose faith increases, so that they cry, “Great are You, O Lord, and marvelous are Your works.”
No words are sufficient to describe this wonder. As I was telling you in the car, some people come here expecting to encounter something macabre. They come to see a mummy or a corpse, as one medical student called it. Some years ago she entered the guesthouse with her mother to stay the night. The Saint approached the young woman, seized her by the collar, and said, “What are you doing here? You do not believe in me.” “Who are you, that I do not believe in you? I do not believe? You do not believe in me? Is this place yours? We came here,” she said, “because there is the corpse of some John the Russian, but I attend university and know what I have been taught. I cannot accept what my mother tells me; I am an educated young woman.” “Get out at once.” “Who are you, my boy?” “I am the master of this house.” “What master?” “I am Saint John the Russian.” “But you are alive!” Why—did she imagine that I was dead? Did she think that I was dead? She sat upright on the steps outside...
until the priest came in the morning and opened the church at seven o’clock, so that she could enter, venerate the Saint, and ask his forgiveness. Some people think in this way because they want to weigh things beyond reason on the scales of their own logic. I did not say irrational things; I said things beyond reason. These things transcend reason, and the human nous—the spiritual intellect—comes to a halt before them. If the priest, despite his great exhaustion, had the strength and courage to tell you one recent miracle among the many—a miracle connected with another he performed in earlier times—you would truly stand amazed and say that such things happened not only in those days but in our own day as well. Glory be to the good God, who in His all-wise providence has placed these treasuries of the Spirit throughout the world: one here, another in Loutraki, five in the Ionian Islands, others in the Aegean, others in Constantinople, while still others have been stolen from us by the Papists...
and in Russia there are more than seventy whole relics, so that people may see and understand that something exists beyond this life. Let us also thank these Saints, who struggled in this world and became worthy vessels of the Holy Spirit, enabling Christ, the Lord of all, to show this loving kindness toward those who require further proof. For this is the purpose they serve: they help and awaken a person, even if he must be compelled. “Compel them to come in.” What you see compels you and presses you, because all your clever arguments are swept aside. I remember Dr. Xydas, a contemporary of Saint Nektarios. When he learned that the whole relic of Saint Nektarios of Aegina had become like that of an incorrupt monk, he went and pulled with all his strength at the marble...
slab over the Saint’s tomb and found the Saint just as he had known him. He touched his skin, and it was as it had been before; he touched his beard. He thought the Saint was alive, although three years had passed. Later, in the report he submitted to the police, he said, “I could not resist the temptation. I had to see whether what the university faculty taught us when I was studying had any relation to the condition of the Saint. I saw that it had no relation whatsoever.” And indeed, there was no relation at all. What the university taught its physicians was completely contrary to what this man saw there. Read the report he submitted to the police at that time, when they called him to give his scientific opinion: Was this a deception by the monks? Were they preserving a corpse there by artificial means in order to collect money and exploit people? Or was it something beyond his understanding?
He said that what he had learned was entirely contrary to what he saw, touched, and smelled. Here all five senses come to our aid. The relic gives off a sweet fragrance; the perfume overwhelms you, and you see him. At first his face is turned upward; then he turns his head toward you, as though saying, “Welcome,” or, “Go with God, my child.” Does that tell you nothing? Some years ago, I confess, we came here with fourteen buses on an ordinary weekday and found the Saint, as usual, looking toward the ceiling. When the others had left the church, I returned to make a prostration and ask him to bring every one of us safely home. When I came back, I saw that his head had turned and he was looking this way.
I ran at once and called to the people, “Come back down! The Saint is bidding us farewell. Come!” And the people came down. Imagine: fourteen buses, forty people in each—five hundred and sixty people. They all venerated him again, and only then did we depart. But some people do not pay attention. Some come unrepentant, without confession, spiritually unprepared, imagining that they have come to see something macabre or a corpse, as our educated people call it today. You see him turn away from such people and turn his face to the other side. Yes, Glory to God. And they too will be raised one day, just as we shall be raised. At this hour I thank him from the depths of my soul for the grace he has granted, through which so much of humanity passing through here is edified. I pray for only one thing: that our Christ, who opened Lydia’s eyes and ears so that she might understand the words of Paul and what he preached in Amphipolis and Philippi...
Once we were here with eight buses. The drivers came to collect their money, but they did not enter to light a candle to the Saint. One of the buses was brand-new, yet when it reached the road below, its fuel tank was punctured—I do not know the proper name for these things. There was no way to stop the leak. A brand-new bus—how could such a thing happen? Nothing worked. Everyone else had left, but this bus could not move. I had noticed that its driver had not come inside. I said to him, “My dear George, why do you not go and light a candle to the one lying there? Go and light a candle. There is nothing wrong with your vehicle. The fuel tank is leaking out of love. Go.” He felt ashamed. “How did he notice that I did not go in? With all these people and all this work, how could he know?” “Go,” I told him. “We will wait for you.” So he set out from down there, came here, and lit a candle. When he returned, the fuel tank was no longer leaking. “You see,” I told him, “it was you who were running away, not the fuel from the tank. The Saint loves you, and he is saying to you, ‘Hey...’”
We thank the preacher of the Second Coming. For the first time in their lives, people repent of their sins simply because they have seen and venerated Saint John. We have counted around three thousand people a year who come to confession here alone, and ninety-five out of every hundred are confessing for the first time. They had never even thought of repenting and going to confession. So here is exactly what Mr. Panagopoulos said: the Saint rests there precisely in order to bring those who have gone astray back to the way of God. Beloved, Greece continually receives the abundant mercy of God. Thousands of miracles take place for the return of sinners and the healing of those suffering from cancer, those possessed by demons, the paralyzed, and others afflicted with unspeakable
illnesses of soul, spirit, and body. As for the miracle, although we would rather not speak further, we shall nevertheless make an exception, because of Mr. Panagopoulos’s great love. The miracle Saint John performed while he was still serving his master in Caesarea is not very well known. His master had gone on pilgrimage to Mecca in Arabia—a journey of three months with the means of transport available at that time. While the master was away, his wife did what the Ottomans, the Turks, customarily did: she prepared a banquet and invited the relatives, friends, and officials of the region to pray that her master would travel safely
and return safely. The Turks were all seated, and Saint John, who was a servant, carried the food to them. He brought his mistress a fine dish, and as soon as she saw it, she said to him, “Ah, John, if only the master were here to eat some of this food! How pleased we would be.” Saint John replied, “My lady, give me a plate of it, and I will send it to him.” She complied, for she had already seen many wondrous things from Saint John. Tradition even tells us that when he entered the stable, the horses, who knew him, would kneel, greet him, and neigh. So she gave him the plate
—to John, her slave and the venerable servant of God—and he left for the stable, his beloved place, which he had made into a place of prayer. The Turks laughed and said that the slave was hungry and had gone away to eat it himself. There he knelt and said, “My God, just as You sent food to Daniel in the lions’ den through the Prophet Habakkuk, so send this plate of food to my master of another faith, that they may behold Your mighty works and Your wonders.” Having said this and called upon the Lord, he saw the plate vanish invisibly from before him. The Turkish agha was in Mecca. When he returned to the inn where he was staying, his room was locked; yet when he opened it, he saw on the table a plate of hot, steaming food.
How had it entered when his room was locked? He was astonished. Then he saw upon the plate the monogram—the name of his family—and said, “The giaour John, the holy man, the man of Allah, the righteous man, has brought me this food.” He took the plate with him when he returned home. Once again they invited the officials to a banquet, this time to welcome him back. At the table he told the Turks, “On this particular day and at this particular hour, I found my food on this plate”—and he brought out the plate and handed it to them—“on the very day and at the very hour when we would have been eating it here.” From that time onward, the torments ceased. But it was already too late. Saint John’s health had already broken down, and the days were drawing near when he would surrender his soul to God.
What Mr. Panagopoulos wanted us to say is that Saint John worked miracles then, as we have heard, and he still works miracles now. Many of them have never been written down. We are trying to collect them all from the elderly, from every tradition, and from accounts originating in Russia, so that a new book may be prepared containing all this material and a great many miracles. Naturally, the miracles cannot be contained in one or two books, because there are thousands of them; the miracles of Saint John would fill whole volumes. At least the greatest miracles will be published later. In this effort, then, we are gathering material for a book, especially concerning the life and history of our venerable Saint. One day, while I was serving Vespers and censing the Holy Relic, I turned to leave and looked up at his icon.
In the icon Saint John is kneeling in prayer, with the plate of food before him, praying that it might be sent away. Something stirred within me. I saw the plate and said to the Saint, “My Saint John, if only we had a plate just like that, so that we could photograph it and include it in the new book.” Nothing more. Vespers ended, and I went home. The following week, on exactly the same day—it was Friday—a woman came in limping and asked, “Father, are you a trustee of the Church here?” “Yes.” She began to weep. “Last Friday evening, I saw Saint John in my sleep, and he told me...” She was Mrs. Avgi, from Kalamata. “I saw Saint John in my sleep, and he said to me, ‘The plate you brought from Asia Minor at the time of the population exchange and the catastrophe of Asia Minor—the one thrown among the copperware in the basement—’”
“‘take it, clean it, and bring it to my house, to my church, because I need it to remain there always.’” Then she took from her bag a copper plate exactly like the one depicted in the icon. You see, beloved, that the Saints attend even to our requests and notice the simplest things—how much more, then, our sins, our faults, and our indifference. Mr. Apostolidis, we thank you very much for coming here with such love and reverence, and I pray for every blessing upon all the pilgrims. May the Saint help us to be true Christians, to confess our sins, to receive the Immaculate Mysteries in Holy Communion, and always to show by our lives that we are true Christians, glorifying God and the Saints through our works.
The soul also grows weary. I was saying in the car that when we leave today, by his grace your bodies will depart, but your souls will remain behind, clinging to this place—however much you believe, however embittered you may be, and however you may express these things.
We must not accuse, but support one another. The person who supports a monastery faces a great challenge. I once saw a monk holding a prayer rope. What does that prayer rope say as he draws it through his fingers and repeats, “Lord Jesus Christ”? Who is saying this? The very man, they say, who as soon as he goes outside and reaches the office lights a cigarette.

Δεν επήγανε από εκεί και ορισμένοι αυθεντικά δογματίζουν ότι δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πέραν του τάφου, λες και επήγανε πέραν του τάφου. Και θα ενθυμείστε τι σας έλεγα στο αυτοκίνητο, σε μια στροφή εκεί, που είπε η μικρούλα στον παππού, ο οποίος παππούς αυθεντικά έλεγε: «Πάψτε, μη χαλάτε τα λόγια σας· δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πέραν του τάφου». Και επετάχτηκε η μικρή και του είπε: «Παππού...» Έχεις πεθάνει καμιά φορά;
Το θαύμα που γίνεται της αφέσεως των αμαρτιών είναι διαμέσου του μυστηρίου. Ο Ιούδας ήταν άγιος. Ακούσατε ότι δεν έκανε θαύματα ο Ιούδας; Γράφει το Ευαγγέλιο ότι ο Ιούδας είχε στερηθεί της χάριτος; Όχι. Ου πάντας χειροτονεί ο Θεός, αλλά διά πάντων ενεργεί. Σε άλλους τούς βάζει ντροπή. «Θα πάω εγώ; Μπορώ να τα πω στον παπά;» Ώστε όταν τα έκανες μπορούσες, ε; Τώρα δεν μπορείς να τα πεις;
Εμείς δεν ξεριζώνουμε τις αμαρτίες, κλαδεύουμε τις αμαρτίες. Οι ρίζες μένουν. Εξομολογούμεθα τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη για να κάνουμε τα ίδια το Μεγάλο Σάββατο, εξομολογούμεθα παραμονές των Χριστουγέννων για να κάνουμε τα ίδια μετά και ούτω καθεξής. Δεν αλλάζουμε ζωή. Είμεθα αμφίβια, μια στον βούρκο και μια απ’ έξω. Δεν απομακρυνόμεθα από τις αιτίες της αμαρτίας και, κατά συνέπεια, δεν είμεθα έτοιμοι ανά πάσαν στιγμή για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Ο άνθρωπος, αν γνώριζε, αν φιλοσοφούσε και έβλεπε ότι δεν υπάρχει παρόν, θα πέθαινε από συγκοπή. Παρόν δεν υπάρχει. Ό,τι λέγω είναι στο παρελθόν και ό,τι θα πω είναι στο μέλλον. Σε κλάσμα δευτερολέπτου υπάρχει εκδοχή να μην είμαι. Ποιος μου υπόσχεται ότι θα μετανοήσω και θα εξομολογηθώ;
