Summary

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles and other witnesses to proclaim God’s works in intelligible languages from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Peter used David’s psalms to show that the promised descendant of David—not David himself—would rise without His body seeing corruption and would sit at God’s right hand. The lecture presents repentance and confession, rather than vows or material offerings, as the Orthodox path to forgiveness, spiritual cleansing, and salvation after Baptism.

We are thankful that we spoke, first, about Pentecost and, more generally, about the work that the Holy Spirit began to accomplish through the Holy Apostles. In particular, we said that, in accordance with Christ’s command, the Holy Apostles began in Jerusalem, then went through Judea and Samaria, and His word reached to the end of the earth—to the farthest reaches of the inhabited world, as He had foretold. This was accomplished first through the Holy Apostles. We also had the opportunity to see that others who were present at Pentecost received the preaching and carried it into the world. Indeed, we said that eighteen different languages were spoken there that day.

They heard the Word of God and the mighty works of God in their own dialects. They were the first to carry this message back to their homelands. Later, the Apostles visited them, baptized them, established churches for them, and appointed bishops, priests, and so forth. This work of the Acts of the Apostles continues to this very day. Peter spoke in order to convince them of the truth about the descent of the Holy Spirit and to show them that, from that day onward, everything had changed.

He used—he used two prophecies from the same book, the book of the Prophet Joel, to tell them that this was not a matter of sweet wine, that they were not drunk. What those mockers were hearing had truly taken place on that day.

It was something written in the Old Testament, in the Prophet Joel, and it was fulfilled on that day. We also had the opportunity to touch upon what we hear today from certain people who supposedly receive illumination and speak in foreign languages. We are expected to believe that they have been illumined by the Holy Spirit and are a continuation of Pentecost. We made a distinction there which is always valid, especially in our own day: those who spoke in foreign languages had someone before them who heard and understood in his own language. But when we hear people speaking supposed foreign languages here today, we ourselves do not speak those languages. Consequently, they are deceiving us.

The Holy Spirit knows that we are Greeks and that we must hear in our own language. Just as the Holy Spirit illumined them then, and those present heard in their own languages, He should do the same today. Unfortunately, this argument—which is living and sound, and a truth that should correct them and protect us—brings neither them nor us to our senses. We still go and listen, and people say, “They are speaking foreign languages.” Those languages are of no concern to us; we should withdraw. Can you tell me what those foreign words mean? There are many such groups abroad, for that is where these strange fruits came from and reached us here. The so-called Pentecostal church directly across from us is one such group, claiming to have received illumination continuing from that time, and so forth. There are others elsewhere that also speak in foreign languages. And so, you see...

In one case the truth was revealed. I heard an incident that confirms what we said the other day, and because it is relevant, I will tell it to you. At a church abroad, as the priest was leaving the church, two women approached him and said, “Come with us, and we will give you the Holy Spirit.” He answered, “I have received the Holy Spirit. I celebrated the Divine Liturgy, gave Holy Communion to my faithful, and received Holy Communion myself. Consequently, I received the Holy Spirit.” They said, “We will give you the Holy Spirit so that you can speak in foreign languages,” and so on and so forth. He replied, “I have no need of that. As long as I am able to speak with my God in my own language, I have no need of it.” Then one of the women began to speak.

She uttered words in a foreign language, and those present were left with the impression that she truly had been illumined by the Holy Spirit and was doing this to persuade the priest to follow her. Beside her stood another woman, who made the sign of the Cross with deep awe, as though she were saying, “My God, forgive me.” The priest noticed her making the sign of the Cross. Now, he knew two languages, English and French. What the first woman had said was neither English nor French. The Holy Spirit had not spoken in a language he understood. But the other woman had crossed herself, and he wondered why. Had the Holy Spirit perhaps spoken in her language?

He called her over and said, “Please tell me why you crossed yourself.” She asked him, “Father, do you know any other languages?” He replied, “I know French and English.” She said, “I am Syrian, and that woman spoke Syriac.” “And what did she say?” “She blasphemed our Christ.” Yet these are the foreign languages that we admire! How do you know what someone is saying? He may be speaking against your Most Holy Theotokos, your Christ, your God, your Saint, your sister, your wife, or you yourself. How can you know? Since he is not speaking in a language you understand, you do not know. We bear great responsibility in many matters. Why we stumble here, I do not know. In any event, what I wish to emphasize is that Peter’s mouth was adorned with the words of the prophets.

A person must know the Scriptures. And Peter did not stop where we stopped. There is more further on. He did not stop after explaining that the Holy Spirit had come and so forth. Other questions still remained, and if, for one reason or another, a person refuses to accept them, he does not possess the necessary foundation for salvation. One of the fundamental matters, then, is the Resurrection of Jesus, which was disputed. From the very first day, a great deal of money was spent to silence people and prevent any discussion of the Resurrection.

What stories were told! Other theories claimed that He had merely collapsed half-dead, that He had pretended to be dead, that He had learned...

There are even stories about His going to India, Pakistan, and so forth. These are newer and foolish inventions. But the main story devised by Satan and spread by means of money was that His disciples had supposedly stolen Him. Yet there were the linen cloths lying there. If they had stolen Him, they would have taken the cloths as well. It is not you who say this; the very stones proclaim it: “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” Peter, however, has still more to say about the Resurrection. Now the preaching is open and powerful. It is no longer fearful, as Peter had been before the servant girl, when he denied Christ with an oath. His tongue has been loosed—or rather, his tongue has now been strengthened. He is strong and has the courage to go even as far as martyrdom. Everything has changed. And there, speaking directly to those of the household, he referred to the One whom they themselves had handed over.

“This is the One I proclaim to you. Raise me upon the Cross if you wish.” He is no longer afraid. Listen to some words from the first preaching delivered by the Apostles, if you have not paid attention to them before. I repeat: we are a continuation of the Acts of the Apostles. That is why I told you pointedly that the book of the Holy Apostles, the Acts of the Apostles, has not been closed and has no epilogue. It remains unfinished, as though someone had laid down the pen and said, “Let the others continue writing.”

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you”—the Greek word for “you” is written with an upsilon, as you know—“by mighty works, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst.” He says, “Men of Israel, I am speaking to you about Jesus—not merely the son of Mary and the supposed son of Joseph the carpenter, but the Son of God, as God proved to you through mighty works, wonders, and signs.” These are the miracles that He performed. For Christ’s miracles demonstrate His divinity, and His deeds demonstrate His divinity. When He opens tombs, can an ordinary man open tombs? When He casts out legions of demons...

Is that a human work? When He walks upon the sea, is that a human work? When He spits on the ground and, with a little earth and saliva, fashions that most delicate part of material creation—the eye—is that human? When He raises Lazarus after four days in the tomb, is that human? Of course, His life also contains human weakness: He eats, sleeps, weeps, and asks questions. But it also contains miracles. He is the God-Man. His miracles demonstrate His divinity. Those of you who have traveled with us will have heard the saying of Proclus, bishop of Constantinople and disciple of the divine John Chrysostom, who spoke concisely about the two natures of Jesus, the human and the divine: “I behold the miracles and proclaim the divinity.”

“I behold the sufferings and confess the humanity.” In these few words, the whole matter is contained. Peter is saying, “I shall speak to you about the One whose miracles you yourselves saw here. He did not perform them far away.” You remember how, when He gave His defense, He said to Pilate, “I have spoken openly.” He did not go preaching in ravines. He preached here, in your synagogues, before the people and the whole world. Therefore, you know the truth. There is another beautiful passage, if you remember it. When officers were sent to arrest Him, they did not do so. When they returned, they were asked, “Why did you not bring Him?” They answered, “No man ever spoke like this Man.”

They could not arrest Him. Overwhelmed by what they heard, their hands fell powerless at their sides. And what did the rulers say in response? “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the rulers believed in Him?” And now you will tell me that the rulers had reasons not to believe, because He denounced them.

He spoke openly. And when matters reached the point where one of the officers struck Him that night, if you remember, what did He say? “If I have spoken evil, bear witness to the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?” What did this mean? Have you ever interpreted it? Have you ever seriously considered these passages? That officer was one of those who had previously been sent to arrest Him.

“Come here. Why are you striking Me? If I spoke wrongly, then testify to what was wrong. But when you came earlier to arrest Me, you stood back and said, ‘No man ever spoke like this Man.’ Tell us why. If you now claim that I said something evil, why did you not arrest Me then? I hold you to your own words. The fact that you did not arrest Me means that I did not speak wrongly. ‘But if I spoke well, why do you strike Me?’ The proof that I spoke well is that you did not arrest Me.” Christ did all these things there, before them. Peter now possesses the boldness, strength, and presence of spirit, as we have said, to set forth this whole sequence of truths—truths he would formerly have been afraid to utter—declaring that this Man performed mighty works, wonders, and signs before their very eyes...

Let them rage.

This is a Man sent by God. He is not merely an ordinary man, as you wish to claim. “This Man, delivered up according to the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you took”—for He surrendered Himself and came willingly, and then you seized Him.

It was God’s counsel, God’s will, and God’s love to send His Son and set right man’s relationship with God. Yes, Peter says, “You took Him, delivered up according to God’s appointed purpose, and by the hands of lawless men you nailed Him to the Cross and put Him to death. But God raised Him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.” Death could not hold Him. For death to hold a man, it must have some claim over him. But it had no claim over this Man. He bore neither ancestral sin nor any voluntary sin. He was not conceived through the seed of man, and therefore bore no inherited guilt or debt.

He was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin. Therefore, He had no share in ancestral sin. Nor had He committed any voluntary sin. Satan, then, had no claim over Him. Death—and the ruler of death, who is Satan—had no power over Him. Therefore, it was impossible for death to hold Him. The Church tells us all this very fully on Great and Holy Saturday, when Christ has descended into Hades and is received there as though in a little inn, as we sing in the Lamentations on Friday evening. There the Church personifies Hades and says, “Today Hades groans and cries aloud.” Hades groans and cries: “It would have been better for me not to receive Him who was born of Mary, for when He came upon me, He destroyed my power.” Through the tree—the tree of knowledge—I took them; and through the wood of the Cross, He took them back from me. Alas, He has plundered me!

He came not only to take back this one Man, but also to bring out all those whom I already held. I cannot keep them.

It is of Him, then, that I am speaking to you, Peter says. He continues at some length and then connects David with Christ. Many things had been said about David. Indeed, when the angel came to the Most Holy Theotokos, he said that the One to be conceived by her—you can read the account of the Annunciation in Luke—would ascend the throne of David. And this is where people become confused. So Peter takes something the Holy Spirit had said through David concerning this very matter, the Resurrection of Christ: “For David says concerning Him, ‘I foresaw the Lord always before me, for He is at my right hand.’” In other words, he says, “I always set my God before me.”

This is essential; we should not remain ignorant of it. Many times, when someone survives an accident, people say, “He had an angel with him,” or, “A Saint was protecting him.” Yes—but have you ever thanked that angel? Have you ever asked him to remain with you always as your guardian, even though you sin? You have not. Some people do not even know that Compline contains a special prayer to the guardian angel for the night.

He says that man foresaw Him. But whom did he set before himself? God Himself, he says. “Therefore my heart rejoiced and my tongue was glad; moreover, my flesh also will dwell in hope.” My flesh, he says, will dwell in hope. When it departs this life, it will still have hope. Do we not hope, then? Yet there is that great modern figure of ours, whom people read and admire, who even wrote what was to be inscribed on his grave. He believes in nothing; he is neither free nor anything else, but a slave precisely because he believes in nothing. Where does he go? A fugitive into oblivion. That is why he prefers the dead that way—and so do all those who do not believe in the Resurrection. They burn their remains and scatter them to the ends of the earth. They want nothing; they want oblivion. But David says: Even when I dwell in Hades—

He says it plainly: “For You will not abandon my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.” These words concern Christ, the Lord. David sees that, when He departs this life, His body will not undergo corruption; He will rise, and God will not abandon Him below. Peter now brings this to their attention from the words of their own king, David, and says: “Gentlemen, what you read there is not about David. It concerns the One who was to ascend David’s throne.” Notice how he helps them understand: “You have made known to me the ways of life; You will fill me with gladness in Your presence. Men and brethren, let me speak freely.”

Allow me to speak to you boldly concerning the Patriarch David. I remind you of this because you may say that David was speaking these words about himself—that he himself would not remain in the grave and would not see corruption. Pay attention: he is not speaking about himself. He is speaking about the One who would sit upon his throne. So, men and brethren, let me speak freely and openly to you concerning the Patriarch David.

David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Indeed, David’s tomb still exists today; it has been found directly beneath the Upper Room. David’s tomb is here, and David’s body and relics are here. So these words from the Old Testament are not about David. David was a prophet. “Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath that from the fruit of his loins...” He says, in effect: “David, God was not speaking about you.” God foresaw that, according to His humanity, Christ would come from David’s lineage, for the Most Holy Theotokos was of royal lineage, and Christ was born of royal lineage. Therefore, foreseeing this, David spoke as a prophet.

As a prophet, knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath that from the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up Christ to sit upon his throne, David foresaw and spoke concerning the Resurrection of Christ: “His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.” Do not be scandalized when we say that He rose and when we preach the risen Christ, whom you crucified. Your own prophet wrote this. Peter leaves them without excuse. It is written, he says. David was not speaking about himself; he was speaking about Christ. For David is here—his tomb and his remains are here. But the One of whom he speaks is not David. That is why he says, “His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.” This Jesus God raised up.

“And of this we are all witnesses. Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God...” He now stands, Peter says, at the right hand of God. For this is being said after the Ascension; this preaching took place after the Ascension. And when we read about Stephen the Protomartyr, we find that he knelt, saw the heavens opened, and saw the Lord at the right hand of the Power. From this, moreover, the Holy Fathers received and confessed the words, “at the right hand of the Father,” and so forth. We, then, are witnesses of Him who was exalted to the right hand of God and who, “having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, poured out this which you now see and hear.” Peter is speaking about the promise of the Holy Spirit. In a certain sense, Christ is the channel through whom—

—the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, comes into the world. Water cannot reach a tree from its spring without a channel. I may wish to send it to you, but there must be a means by which it can come. Christ, therefore, through His Crucifixion, created this means for man; and now, by grace, He becomes the cause through whom man receives the Holy Spirit from God for Christ’s sake. “Having received Him from the Father, He poured out this which you now see and hear.” You see us speaking; you have heard us and are hearing us with your own ears. You see the change in us. I denied Him three times, and now I am ready for you to cut off my head. By what power? By His power. Thank you.

There is something else David says: “The Lord said to my Lord.” Lord—the Father and the Son. The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand.” And to whom does He say this? To David? He did not seat David at His right hand. “Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet. Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus both Lord and Christ.” Do you understand? Christ according to His humanity, yet also Lord and God. “This Jesus whom you crucified.” What courage it took to say this openly to the Jews—to speak these truths to their faces, truths taken from their own Scriptures! Humanly speaking, he should have been afraid. Yet he tells them plainly. In any case, “when they heard these things”—these truths—“they were pierced in their hearts.” Do you know what it means to be pierced in the heart? The truth is—

—like a bow and an arrow. When you tell someone one truth, it is as though you pierce him and shoot an arrow into him. If you tell him a second truth, that is another arrow. And if you tell him a third and a fourth, you pierce him again and again, as with a lancet or an arrow. When a man is pierced, what happens? He begins to bleed. I pierce, and pierce again, until he is brought to compunction and surrenders. But what is needed is truth—not merely the human spirit, but truth. Peter told them so many truths from their own Scriptures that they were left without excuse.

“When they heard this, they were pierced in their hearts and said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles, ‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’” In other words, they acknowledged the truth of the matter: that they had crucified Him unjustly, that they were the murderers, that they had killed Christ. They admitted it. What were they to do now? “Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.’” Notice also that he did not tell them to bring a candle as tall as themselves or a whole tin of oil. By this I do not mean that we may not offer a candle as tall as ourselves—

—or a million kilograms of oil, or any amount of incense, or anything else. But we cannot stop there. Salvation does not begin there. We tell a sick man who has nothing else to cling to, “Make a vow, and you will see. Make a vow.” We do not say: “Repent. Go to Holy Confession. Receive Holy Communion. Call the priest. Bring Christ to your bedside.” Instead, we say: “Make a vow; strike a bargain.” Peter did not tell them to make a vow. First he told them to repent. They had killed Christ, yet he did not tell them they were beyond hope. Yes, they had killed Christ, but through metanoia—repentance—the matter could be set right. Are the rest of us to have some other way of repentance by which we may set things right? Is there another way? This is where salvation begins. God accepts material offerings because of human weakness; the spiritually strong do not rely on such things.

Works done in expectation of a reward—vows and the like—are for the weak, not for the strong. Yet Jesus Christ allows the weak to hope even through such works. The faithful person believes in Christ. That is where the whole matter begins; that is the beginning of salvation. Then, according to his strength, he also does good to his neighbor and shows love. Holy Scripture teaches righteousness, almsgiving, prayer, and all the rest. But one must begin with the saving reality of repentance. This is the key Peter placed in their hands: metanoia—repentance. You know, repentance is a key with two sides. On one side it says, “Repentance equals salvation.”

On the other side it says, “Refusal to repent equals Hell.” Take it, then, O man; decide what you will do, and use it. There are people who have never made use of repentance. This key is not in Christ’s hands; it is in man’s hands. Have you ever read in the Apocalypse and in Matthew what Christ says to Peter? He gives him the keys: whatever he looses will be loosed, and whatever he binds will be bound. He gave him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. And have you read what the Apocalypse says? Christ holds the keys of the abyss. What distinction do you see here? He left the keys of repentance and salvation with men upon the earth, but He took the keys of the abyss with Him. It is as though He says: “I do not want anyone to go to Hell. I left you only this key.” Yet man struggles and insists: “No, I want to go to Hell.”

You want to use the key down there to open it yourself. Leave it alone; do not be afraid. In the end, it will be opened once and for all, and you will go in with the whole crowd of the others.

It is deeply significant and very consoling that there is this medicine called metanoia—repentance. I do not know whether you have ever considered how Satan has again put his foot into the matter and confused everything. Repentance is a Mystery of the Orthodox Church, and for an Orthodox Christian it applies especially after Baptism. That is, it cleanses him from the sins committed after he was baptized. Those who are unbaptized are set right through Baptism. But Satan has distorted this. For us today, it is not repentance alone; it is also Holy Confession. Those whom Peter addressed were unbaptized, and so he told them, “Repent.” But to us who are baptized, the Church says—

To us He says, “Repent and confess your sins.” The Mystery is not simply repentance, because confession cleanses sins just as the water of Baptism cleanses the person who is unbaptized. But I, who have been baptized and have sinned afterward, am cleansed through repentance and confession. The devil, then, has distorted the Mystery and turned it into either repentance or confession. That is why we find people who have repented but have never confessed, and, on the other hand, people who confess regularly but have never repented. They go back and do the same things again. They are like amphibians: they come up out of the water like a frog, and before long—splash!—they are back in it. They do not leave the mire behind. They come out for a little while, and then they are ready to plunge back in.

Those who confess in order to receive Holy Communion on Great Thursday start doing the same things all over again on Great Saturday, and then they have plenty of time until the Dormition Fast, and so on. The Mystery, then, is repentance and confession together. Nor is it the kind of repentance that says, “I regretted doing it; never mind, I will go and tell the priest this and that.” Few are those who have both repented and confessed. I do not know how many of us belong to this third group—not repentance alone, nor confession alone, but repentance and confession together. We see this fully expressed in the story of the Prodigal Son. He repented, made his plan, reached his decision, arose, and went to declare the things that his failure had brought him to recognize in repentance.

There they changed his garment: they took off the filthy clothes and put new ones on him. Then they led him inside, where the fatted calf was waiting. This is precisely the process that still takes place today in the Orthodox Church. It has its foundation and necessity in the Gospel. That is why, on the very evening of His Resurrection, as we read in the twentieth chapter of John, Christ said to them, “Peace be with you.” And again: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. Receive the Holy Spirit.” He breathed on them. And for what purpose? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Thus, for the unbaptized there is no salvation apart from Christ and Baptism; and for the baptized there is no salvation apart from repentance and confession. A person’s works are simply his luggage, but

he needs a ticket in order to travel and take his luggage with him. No one has ever traveled with luggage alone. Both are necessary. So Peter urged them to repent for what they had done. What does that mean? To acknowledge it: “Yes, we did this.” Now, if you believe in the One against whom you sinned, you must accept what He taught. And what did He teach? That the person who believes should be baptized. Baptism cleanses a person’s sins. That is why Peter says, “Let every one of you be baptized for the forgiveness of sins”—whatever he may have done, even if he took part in killing Christ—“and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Unless you are cleansed, you will never receive this gift that you have heard and seen upon our heads, and that you can see in our speech and in our boldness. This is also beautifully shown in the account of the Samaritan woman.

The Samaritan woman asked Him for the living water, and He sent her to bring her husband, because until then He had not yet confronted her about the filth in her life. Her husband’s coming would lead them to discuss the vessel that was stained. She was asking for living water, which is the grace of the Holy Spirit—but in what vessel could He place it? She had brought her water jar for ordinary water. But the vessel for the living water, which will never run dry, is the human heart and soul, and hers contained this particular uncleanness. She had had six men up to that point, and so He told her to bring her husband. When she acknowledged the truth about her life, she said to Him, “You are a prophet.” In other words, she faced the matter honestly. This acknowledgment—“Yes, I did it. I was careless. My hatred and my passion carried me away. Yes, I did it”—this is what is required. You see, Christ does not summon a person to pay his debts. He does not call him to pay for his filth. Nor does He ask whether the person has anything good to offer.

It is the filthy things that He asks for. Have you never thought of that? A leech draws the bad blood out of a person and leaves the good blood untouched. A bedbug drinks the dirty blood and leaves the good blood untouched. In the same way, Christ says: “Whatever filthy thing you have, whatever evil you have, whatever fault you have, give it to Me. Keep the good things for yourself.” It is like a grocer calling out, “Tell your father to come so that we can settle the account in the ledger,” while the father slips around the other corner because he has no money to pay. Christ says, “Come, and let us settle the account. Admit what you owe, and I will forgive the whole debt.” Yet the person will not come. Who, then, settles the debt—the one who forgives it or the one who receives forgiveness? And why does the person refuse to come? Because of his ego. His ego justifies him: “But I have not fallen as low as other people.” Really? As low as how many?

Do you think your own grave faults are insignificant? You are the Pharisee standing up there. You are a modern Pharisee: “I am not like other men.” What are those others made of, Pharisee? And what special design are you made from—what warp, what linen, what material? Are you not made from earth? At most, you are made from ordinary earth: I may be dark soil and another may be pale soil. What makes you superior, Pharisee? “Nor am I like this tax collector.” What are you made of? What is that other person? She is a prostitute; she is an adulteress. And what are you? Are you nothing at all? It is one thing for a person to hold himself up as the model and expect everyone else to be fashioned after him, as though he were the prototype. But how do you know? Were you not born of a mother and a father? Do you not bear ancestral sin? Have you not been inclined toward evil since infancy? Does your eye not turn toward evil? What about your nous, your spiritual intellect? Everything in you is affected. How, then, are you pure? At what moment could you claim to be pure? In any case, the conclusion is that, in order to receive this grace, we need what Peter said. He continues: “For the promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far off, as many as…”

“…the Lord our God shall call.” It begins with you, he says. God loved you first. He appeared among you; all these mighty works and miracles took place in your homes, at your doors, and before your very eyes. He wants to begin with you, but that does not mean He excludes anyone else. Whoever wishes to call upon Him will also be included. So if you wish to be saved “from this crooked generation,” pay attention. They heard him. “Then those who gladly received his word”—gladly and willingly—they accepted both his message and the reproach and accusation that they themselves had done this. They gladly received his word and were baptized. That was what he told them. They did not say, “Why should I be baptized?” or argue about this and that, or say, “I will just be sprinkled.” They were baptized. The Greek word for baptizing is related to dipping and immersing. It does not mean sprinkling, as the Catholics claim. It means immersion.

Saint Kosmas of Aetolia used to say: “Take care, when you baptize, to put the whole child under the water. If even so much as the point of a needle remains outside the water, Satan dwells there.” For this reason he distributed thousands of baptismal fonts. He bought or had them made, together with churches and schools—many baptismal fonts—so that Christian children, even little ones, could be immersed and enrolled in the name of Christ. “And that day,” it says, “about three thousand souls were baptized and added.” Added to what? Something must already have existed for them to be added to it. Where were they added? They were added to the Church, were they not? They were added to that first body of believers. As I have told you before, the first Church was founded in Hades,

during the thirty-three hours that Christ was there below.

Afterward the Apostles were added, and now the Apostles build by adding those who are being saved. Today three thousand, tomorrow five hundred, then one hundred and twenty, and afterward others—sometimes one by one, as though caught with a hook: Cornelius here, Paul there, and so on. People continue to be added to this day. The building of Christ’s Church is not finished. It has not yet been completed. There is still work to be done. Until the consummation of the age, this number will continue to grow. So about three thousand were added—“about,” because they did not count them precisely. And now, regarding those believers, pay attention to how the first Church lived and to the characteristics that we, as its successors, ought to have.

“And they continued steadfastly in the teaching of the Apostles.”

The preaching of the Apostles is essential. A person who does not listen to homilies remains completely in the dark about matters of faith, no matter how much he may read. What he hears from a living voice he will not be able to absorb in the same way through writing alone. This does not mean that reading is of no benefit. But the questions, the difficult points, and the things clarified for you through preaching cannot be found and absorbed in quite the same way from a text. You may ask why. During a homily the Spirit is present—the Comforter—guiding the speaker’s tongue, however sinful the speaker may be, for the benefit of the people.

That is why you sometimes attend a homily and say, “That was meant for me tonight.” But I do not even know you by sight. How could I have prepared it for you? Until I came here, I myself did not know what I was going to say. People would sometimes ask me afterward for the written manuscript, but there was none; it had not been prepared beforehand. Years ago I was speaking on the fifth floor of a building in Kaningos Square. When I finished and stepped down from the lectern, a gentleman came forward from the back, shook my hand, and said, “If you knew me, I could have said that all of you in here were informers.” Then I understood that everything I had said that evening had fitted him exactly; it had all been about him. I told him, “Fortunately, we do not know you, and so we are not informers.” From the moment he entered, while his wife had been telling him for years,

“My dear George, come with me, George,” he would answer, “That man is dragging you there, and all of you are fools,” and so on. He would drive there and wait downstairs for his wife, Soula, then take her home to Thiseos Street, where we lived. For five years he had done this. But one evening he thought, as he later admitted, “Where does Anna keep going upstairs? What do they say there? Why does she come here? What kind of fools are gathered inside?” He considered himself intelligent—he worked at the Bank of Greece, you see. So he went upstairs. The hall had a door on one side, and the office had another door on the other side. The main hall was full, so they opened the office as well and people entered through there. They opened the doors between the two rooms, making them into one large hall.

More people were gathered there too, and he found a place somewhere in a corner. When I came out and began to speak, everything I said was about him. How could I have known? He thought, “This man knows me. He recognized me. My wife must have told him something,” and he tried to leave. But how could he get out through the crowd? The people told him, “Sit down. We did not come here for you to treat us like fools. Sit.” So he crouched down and sat where he thought I could not see him. Look at what happens to a person! I spoke for an hour and ten minutes about him. And he was not the only one. There was also Mr. Vasilis Chaltiakis, an imposing man, who came in greatly agitated, though I had never met him. On another occasion, a man who intended to take his own life was walking along Panepistimiou Street. He himself later testified to this. When he reached the Archaeological Society, his feet seemed to turn of their own accord, and he went inside. He made his way to the rear,

beyond the marble pieces and sculptures, and sat there. When I came out to speak, I began speaking about him and about the very situation he was in—how that afternoon he had intended to take his own life at the Acropolis. He was shaken and sat down. Behold the work of the Lord! The man did not take his own life, and afterward he remained alive for many years, though I have now lost contact with him and do not know whether he has died. I told him, “Listen to me. The Lord protected you, guided your steps, and brought you here so that you could hear that you must not take your own life. Entrust everything to the One who is at work, and He will arrange it for you.” I do not know what became of him. Taking occasion from what happened at Philippi, when Paul spoke to several women at the place where Lydia’s baptistery still stands, Scripture says that the Lord opened her heart. So they were not acting by themselves.

We speak about the Lord. We are not speaking about our own souls or our own property; we are speaking about what belongs to Him, about His Blood. Is it possible that He is not here? It is impossible. Each person receives as much as he permits himself to receive, because sometimes our ego stands in the way. I know of a gentleman who was brought here by another man who is now abroad. One was a senior educator and the other a judge, respectable and cultivated men, but the first had never been involved in matters of faith. After much persuasion—“Yes, this Thursday; yes, next Thursday”—he finally came. It was the eve of the Annunciation, and we were speaking about the Annunciation to the Most Holy Theotokos. He sat through a talk lasting more than an hour; and you know how much the Annunciation contains. As they went down the stairs, his friend asked him, “What did you understand?” “Nothing,” he replied. “I was completely in the dark. These things were foreign to me. I understood nothing.”

Of course he understood nothing. He had come to look down upon these things from above, expecting them merely to address his intellect. But these things do not speak merely to the head; they speak to the heart. If the heart is not receptive, neither is the head. Christ does not look at people’s heads. The nous, the spiritual intellect, is the hired servant of the heart. If the heart is evil and filthy, you will understand nothing of the things discussed by the intellect. This is not a matter of knowledge; it is a matter of faith. Knowledge has its place, certainly, but it comes afterward. That is why I say that it is the grace of the Holy Spirit that orders these things, not the holiness of the speaker. To the extent that you believe, the Holy Spirit will make the speaker say what you need, so that you may receive help in your particular situation. Satan tries to keep people away from this, and afterward many are amazed: “Ah, I did not know! Where have I been all this time?” Only later do they see that they have truly wasted time, because the only time a person can truly be said to have lost is time lost in this matter.

It is the loss of those things that would have served him in attaining the Kingdom of Heaven. For if a person learns everything else but does not learn this, he has learned nothing. So they continued steadfastly every day in the teaching of the Apostles, in fellowship with one another, in the breaking of the artos—the blessed bread—and in the prayers. This does not simply mean gathering together. Fellowship and communication without preaching and teaching, without prayer, and without the breaking of the artos are not true communion at all. Today we have almost abandoned these things. Most pulpits are silent.

You could write your name in the dust on them with your finger. The pulpits are not used. And some are used, but it is as though they were not, because they weary the congregation instead of awakening it.

Secondly, there is no prayer in the Church. The people who attend church do not pray. They stand there, of course, dressed in their suits, but they do not pray. They do not participate; they do not enter with their whole heart into what is said in the Church, or into what ought to be said in the Church. If people went to Church and prayed, saying even one “Lord have mercy—we want Him to have mercy on our world, to have mercy on our young people, to have mercy on those who are separated, to have mercy on the heretics, to have mercy on me and on my household,” then the Church would become a blazing furnace whose flame would reach heaven itself. But nothing happens!

If someone in some corner says even a single “Lord have mercy,” people think he is disturbed or hysterical, that he does not know what he is doing. There is chatter from the candle stand all the way into the sanctuary. There is neither preaching, nor prayer, nor Holy Communion. In any case, we shall stop here and, God willing, continue next time, because, as I can see from what follows, the Apostle Peter’s first sermon from the pulpit still has further moral instruction for us. May God help us.

Ξενόγλωσσα πράγματα, και έμεινε η εντύπωση στους παρευρισκομένους ότι πράγματι εφωτίσθη διά του Πνεύματος του Αγίου και το κάνει αυτό το πράγμα για να βοηθήσει τον ιερέα να την ακολουθήσει. Δίπλα ήταν μία άλλη, η οποία έκανε τον Σταυρό της, και τον έκανε τον Σταυρό της με δέος. Σαν να έλεγε: «Θεέ μου, συγχώρεσέ με», έτσι με δέος. Είδε ο ιερέας ότι έκανε τον Σταυρό της. Κοίταξε, αυτός ήξερε δύο γλώσσες. Ήξερε Αγγλικά και Γαλλικά. Αυτά που είπε αυτή δεν ήσαν ούτε Αγγλικά ούτε Γαλλικά. Δεν μίλησε στη γλώσσα του το Πνεύμα το Άγιο. Η άλλη όμως σταυροκοπήθηκε και του έκανε περιέργεια γιατί σταυροκοπήθηκε η άλλη. Μίλησε στη γλώσσα της άραγε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο;

Βρώμικα του ζητάει, δεν το έχεις σκεφτεί ποτέ; Είδατε, η βδέλλα τραβάει το σκοτωμένο αίμα από τον άνθρωπο, το καλό δεν το πειράζει. Είδατε, ο κοριός πίνει το βρώμικο αίμα από τον άνθρωπο, το καλό δεν το πειράζει. Έτσι και ο Χριστός μας λέει: «Ό,τι βρώμικο έχεις, ό,τι κακό έχεις, ό,τι ελάττωμα έχεις, αυτό δώσ' μου εμένα. Τα καλά κράτησέ τα εσύ». Και εμείς, φωνάζει ο μπακάλης «πες τον πατέρα να έρθει να λογαριαστούμε για το δεφτεράκι», και ο πατέρας περνάει απ' τ' άλλο, ντάλα γωνία, γιατί δεν έχει να πληρώσει. Ο Χριστός λέει «έλα να λογαριαστούμε, να παραδεχτείς ότι οφείλεις και εγώ να στα χαρίσω». Και ο άνθρωπος δεν πηγαίνει. Ποιος λέει τώρα που ξοφλεί; Αυτός που τα χαρίζει, αυτός που τα παίρνει; Και γιατί δεν πάει; Γιατί έχει εγωισμό. Ο εγωισμός του τον αυτοδικαιώνει. «Μα δεν είμαι σαν κι άλλους πεσμένος». Σοβαρά; Σαν πόσους;
