Summary
The Triodion begins by contrasting the self-righteous Pharisee with the repentant Publican, showing that good works without humility do not justify a person before God. Suffering and failure can awaken a person to spiritual reality, as the Prodigal comes to himself and resolves to return humbly to his father. Repentance also requires repairing injustice where possible through repayment, personal apology, and concrete responsibility for the harm one has caused.

This evening I wanted to continue the subject we spoke about the day before yesterday. Then, on the occasion of the opening of the Triodion, we spoke about what this period contains, from the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee through to the Resurrection. At the very beginning, it presents two men: one was lost and the other was saved. Strangely enough, the man with the good works was lost—the man who had wronged no one, stolen nothing, dishonored no one; a man of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Today, if we found such a man, we would think he ought to go straight to the very heart of Paradise—not merely its courtyard, but straight into Paradise. And yet he did not enter. God did not justify him. Instead, the man whom we would have condemned from the outset was justified. We had already judged him because he was a publican: dishonest and exploitative.
Yet he had the good sense to beat his breast and ask God for mercy, offering nothing of his own. Perhaps he too had done some good deed to place others under an obligation or make them overlook certain things. He must have done something. But he presented none of it. He was content simply to say, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This is rather like the words, “Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom.” It is no small thing to gain the Kingdom with two brief words, and yet he achieved it. Those same words were once spoken by another man beside the Cross: the thief on the right. You will remember this, and on this occasion I would like to point out something.
Many people rely on this. “I shall say, like the thief, ‘Remember me,’ and I shall be saved. I shall beat my breast like the publican and be saved. Why should I tire myself now or struggle? There is no need.” That is a mistake. The case of the publican is not enough by itself. It requires a completion, and that completion is given next Sunday through another parable—not the publican and the... but the Prodigal Son. As for the thief’s words, “Remember me,” you should know that they belong to the old dispensation, not to the new dispensation of the New Testament. Christ our Lord...
had not yet said, “It is finished.” After “It is finished,” after His descent into Hades and His ascent, things changed. The way of salvation is not simply, “Remember me.” It is Baptism: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” And, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned.” If a person soils his Baptism, there are metanoia—repentance—and Confession: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” And there is Holy Communion: “He who eats My flesh has eternal life.”
Certainly, the one who does not eat does not have eternal life. “He who drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” “Take, eat; this is My Body; this is My Blood,” and so forth. We see, then, that the way of salvation is not merely to say, “Remember me.” So neither the case of the publican nor the thief’s “Remember me” should be discussed in isolation. The matter is completed next Sunday. The Fathers say that if our Lord had come to earth only to preach the parable of the Prodigal Son, it would have been enough for people to understand how they were made by God, how they fell and through what power, what the way of return is, and what they must make use of to return to Paradise, so that there may be joy and prayerful thanksgiving.
Then the saying of the Lord would be fulfilled: “There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.” So comprehensive is this parable, and so necessary as a completion of the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee. When these two parables are proclaimed, they shake a person and move him from where he stands. For a person trusts only in his own strength, holiness, and works. Concerning the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, the Gospel says, “He also spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves”—those who were confident that they were righteous and needed no one, believing they would be saved as a right because of their own righteousness. That is why the appointed passage says this.
Forgive me. The parable of the Prodigal Son is found in the fifteenth chapter of the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Curiously, it is the third parable in sequence. If we read the chapter, we see that Christ first told two other parables in much the same spirit. They do not attain the fullness or spiritual nourishment of the account of the Prodigal Son, but they too speak of the joy over something that was lost. In this case, the lost one is man. The first is the parable of the Lost Sheep.
A shepherd, He says, had a hundred sheep and lost one. He left the ninety-nine, went down into the ravines, and found that one sheep. He placed it on his shoulders and returned rejoicing. The meaning stands out vividly. The Shepherd who comes is the Lord, and the sheep is man. He found that sheep. Why, then, does the Shepherd not find us? He left His place, His glory, and His throne, and came down. Why does He not find us? For a sheep to be found, it too must desire to be found. If the sheep does not want this, how is the shepherd to find it?
A lost sheep can easily be found when it longs for the fold and the sheep pen, or, if it is young, for its mother. When it bleats, it is found. But when it does not bleat, it does not help the shepherd find it. It will remain outside, and the wolf will devour it. Why does this happen? A prokeimenon from one of the Vespers services says, “Your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life.” What does that mean? Mercy pursues us, but we do not stop and encounter the mercy of God so that we may be benefited.
Is that sheep found? And how is it found?
The sheep wanders away, finds some place to eat, curls up, and sleeps there. Does it want to return? Will it be found or not? But if the sheep longs for its fatherland, bleats, and cries out, “I am lost; find me, save me,” then it will be found. We must not blame Christ because He has not yet found us. We must blame ourselves because we have not called out to Him so that He may find us: “Here we are. Come!” The next parable is that of the Lost Coin. A woman, He says, lost a drachma—not, of course, a drachma of our own day. The matter was so serious and the sum so great that the whole neighborhood heard of it, as though she had lost a billion.
She swept everything, shook everything out, and at last found it. Then she held it up, went outside, and called the others to rejoice because she had found it. These words and examples are not chosen at random. They reveal the value of the human person. If there is such joy over one sheep, and such celebration over one drachma, what will there be over an immortal soul? After telling these two parables, the Lord completes them with the great parable of the Prodigal Son. That parable has not one central figure but two, and sadly one of them remains lost, even though in this case he too was one who had been lost.
As in the first parable, where one is received and the other is left, so here one entered and the other did not. The one who did not enter was the son who had never left the house and had never refused his father’s wishes. Here we encounter startling things. A person therefore needs great attentiveness concerning how he lives as a Christian, how he acts, and what he does. For Saint Basil the Great says, “A good thing is not good unless it is done well”—that is, as God desires. Christianity does not place God under obligation. God cannot be compelled. You may remember this parable from school, because it often appears in school anthologies and essay books. It holds the foremost place among the parables.
At least, that is how I remember it from our school days.
The parable presents two sons: a man had two children. The younger dared to ask his father to give him the portion of the estate that fell to him—what belonged to him, his share, as we would say. He did not wish to remain there. Evidently, he wanted to go off on his own and live a happier life. The meaning is entirely spiritual, of course, but we often do the same thing materially. We insist on taking whatever we can carry away, and then we leave to live a supposedly better life that we think impossible near our family home. I do not deny that sometimes life at home may be such that it forces us to leave. A father may have some failing or difficult character, or perhaps there is an overbearing father-in-law nearby.
But that father and that house never created any reason for the son to leave. Evidently, he was tired of all the prohibitions—the “do nots” and “you must nots.” Young people today speak of overthrowing “the establishment.” But these things are ancient; others have challenged and confused them too. Others ate bread before you, and yet I see you eating it. Others drank water before you, and yet I see you drinking it. You keep doing all these age-old things yourself. Why do you not abolish them too, since they belong to the ancient establishment? Why not abolish them? In the end, the son took his possessions and left. “Not many days later,” the Gospel says, he gathered everything and departed.
A characteristic and instructive detail, which I do not want us to overlook, is that this reckless act is attributed to the younger son. It was the younger who did it. Why? Because sin is younger than virtue. God did not create sin. Man rebelled; man brought about his own departure and separation. God did not create such a condition. What did the son accomplish by leaving? He went away, the Gospel says, and squandered everything, “living prodigally.” He ended up in the pigsty of a rich man, working as a swineherd. This young man had set out with his suits, shirts, gloves, suitcases, and all the rest, hoping to fulfill his dream and rise to great heights; yet he found himself tending pigs. Every person far from God is a swineherd. Let us not deceive ourselves. Every person far from God is out of his right mind and without true knowledge, even if he possesses worldly learning. All worldly things have an end. They fade away and reach only as far as the grave; they cannot go beyond it. The son himself says this further on, and I shall explain it to you. Everything apart from God is irrational and mad, no matter how a person may regard himself.
He may consider himself great, wise, intelligent, and successful, and others may also think that he has succeeded. But if he has not succeeded according to Christ, both he and they are mistaken.
Everything has an end; it stops somewhere. And the things of God are measured not by length but by weight—not by how many there are, but by how much they weigh. Do you see how things are measured today? They speak of a hundred million people. But what does that make us?
Bring out the balance and set up the scales. Place one Christian on this side—not ten Christians, nor so many millions, but one Christian—and you will see him outweigh all the rest. It is not a matter of quantity but of weight: what weight, worth, and true value something possesses, and in relation to whom? In relation to Christ. We have made our own measuring rod and our own scales, with which we weigh and measure things, but these are not what count. I have said this before, and you probably know it. If you do not, read it; and if you do know it, listen again to what is being said. Daniel relates that King Belshazzar once drank wine before a thousand of his concubines and imagined that this display made him someone great.
A hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the wall, and the king’s legs began trembling like reeds. He summoned the wise men, the Chaldeans, and everyone supposedly qualified to explain it. Then Daniel was called from prison, and he interpreted it for him, saying: “This is what is written here: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. Your kingdom has been numbered, O king, and found wanting. You have been weighed on God’s scales and measured by God’s measure, and you have been found wanting. Tonight your kingdom will be divided and given to Darius the Persian.”
And indeed, Darius, who was besieging Babylon, diverted the Euphrates River, entered through its dry bed, and killed him that very night. At this very moment, as I think highly of myself and pamper myself, while you flatter and exalt me, there is Someone above us who weighs according to His own standard, measures according to His own standard, and judges according to His own standard. And by that judgment, I do not think we can so easily convince ourselves that we are saved. Sadly, we too live far from Christ’s commands and prohibitions. We do not want Christ today, because He exposes our lawless way of life.
All those who reject Him without ever having read about Him or experienced life with Him forget that the command is, “Taste and see,” not, first of all, “Go to sleep.” People who have never even read the Gospel make themselves enemies of Christ. And this is because Christ cauterizes the flesh, the ego, and self-interest. That is the reason. They reject Him from the outset, because whether we like it or not, He will expose us.
So the young man went off and lived the life he wanted. The result was nothing—complete failure. His hopes collapsed. His friends went away. His girlfriends went away. His wallet was no longer bulging. Things took a turn for the worse.
What does a person imagine? That he can live far from God, or create with money the life he has dreamed of? Look closely at those who did not want, or did not take care, to follow God’s path, and you will see how unhappy they are, even if they live amid the riches of Croesus. See how miserable they are, how withered within.
Let us be careful. We will not always be young, my beloved. We will not always have friends and girlfriends, because we have them while we have money and youth. When these begin to fade, our friends leave us, our girlfriends leave us, and then we feel a terrible loneliness—an endless winter, a true Siberia—and we become pitiable. Tribulations and failures often help us return to Christ. Blessed are tribulations; blessed are shipwrecks; blessed is mourning; blessed are wars; blessed are earthquakes; blessed are all afflictions, for they help a person return.
Of course, there are also people who make their own the passage in the Apocalypse: when afflictions came upon them, instead of imploring God, they bit their tongues and blasphemed God. Such cases also exist. Yet others turned to Christ because they reached an impasse and realized that there is no saving power in the world, and that the world is a liar. The world abandoned them, and they were compelled to look upward. This is what happened to this man. He thought that life consisted only in his flesh and in everything surrounding the flesh. That is why he was always concerned with gratifying it.
The detail Christ gives us—that his only food was carob pods, and that even these could not satisfy him—is not accidental. Every person who lives far from Christ is a prodigal feeding on carob pods, seeking happiness in pleasures. He takes pleasure in this person and that person, in wine, in cards, in food—pleasure after pleasure. Yet none of these satisfies him. Will that satisfy him? No, he remains hungry. He does many things, but none of them is everything he needs. What he truly needs is not there.
Nothing connected with the flesh can create true happiness in a person and fill him. These things were given for use, not for abuse. Spiritual needs cannot be met or balanced by material things. Spiritual needs require spiritual things. All earthly pleasures are carob pods. A carob pod has the property of offering a certain sweetness at first. But after a person chews it for a while, he spits it out. It is not proper food for a human being. Prodigals who live far from Christ and the Church live precisely this way. Are they satisfied? No, they are not. Those of you who lived in Athens will remember that during the Occupation there came a time when, here on Athinas Street, there were not even any greens for sale—only carts filled with carob pods.
You will remember clearly that this was what you had, and this was what you had to eat. Yet His mercy delivered us once again, and still we did not come to our senses. We have to hear the air-raid siren before we stretch out our hands to God. When the sirens stopped, the prayer stopped as well. God forbid that such a thing should happen again. I have nothing to gain from it, but sadly, if we continue as we are, the same things will come upon us again—and then God will not listen. For the saddest and most dreadful thing is not for a person to suffer cancer, a shipwreck, a family disaster, or anything of that kind. It is to cry out to God and receive no answer. Read the first chapter of Proverbs and see what it says: the time will come, He says, when you will call upon Me and I will not answer. That is the most dreadful thing of all.
How do we feel when we urgently need first aid and no one answers, or when we need the fire brigade and it does not come? You understand how that feels. Yet these are material examples and cannot fully convey spiritual realities. Imagine, then, crying out to God and receiving no answer. That is the worst and most terrible thing. Through this failure, however, this man came to himself. There is the madman restored to his senses! When you are far from God, you are beside yourself. So he said, “What have I come to? I was outside myself. I had lost my senses. I built dream after dream. I imagined that I would accomplish great things and become happy. But I, the son of a noble house, have ended up as a swineherd.” And so he said:
“I will arise and go to my Father.” After his failure, he formed the resolve to rise—and not everyone who fails reaches that resolve. When the doctors have given up on us, when money and medicine have failed us, people say, “So now we have turned to the things of the Church.” Do they say it with faith? If so, blessed are they. But often they say it mockingly—mockingly. Yet they turned to a Saint, and many things that doctors could not accomplish through long courses of treatment were accomplished through a little oil on a piece of cotton from the Holy Unmercenaries, from Saint Nektarios of Aegina, or from the Most Holy Theotokos—just a little oil, a single drop. Why? Because faith stands behind it, and because God also wishes to teach us.
“Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.” He remembered that there were hired workers in his father’s house. After what he had done, after the sorrow he had caused and the way he had behaved, he thought that he no longer deserved to call that man his father or to be called his son. He had already humbled himself inwardly and resolved to live accordingly. Here we have metanoia—repentance. I repent; I turn completely around. I was going east, and I turn west. I was going south, and I turn north. Repentance does not mean continuing along a path parallel to the one I was already following, as so often happens with us.
We repent, climb out of the mud, and then sit at the edge of the same pool; before long, splash—we are back in it again. To repent means to change roads, to turn one hundred and eighty degrees. Those who have repented in this sense have succeeded. They live lightly and freely, and they sleep in peace, without even fearing death. “I will arise and go to my Father.” Repentance is a decision, but that decision bears no fruit unless it is formally communicated. Obtain any judgment from a court: if that judgment is not communicated to the proper authority,
you will gain nothing from it. You may go to the treasury to collect what is due to you under the court’s ruling, but the cashier will tell you, “No ruling has been communicated to us.” “But it was announced on the radio; it was printed in the newspaper.” “Yes, but the decision has not been officially communicated to us. Come back in a few days.” You return in a few days and receive the same answer. Then one day you return and find that it has finally been communicated, and only then can you claim your rights. Many people repent. Even at this very moment, many people in this hall feel repentance, but they have not communicated their repentance. They repent of stealing this, of wronging someone there, of dishonoring and deceiving a woman.
They repent of taking away the mother of someone’s children, or the father of someone’s children, through various unlawful relationships. They repent of possessing another person’s land, of moving boundary markers at night, of stealing other things and keeping property that belongs to someone else—but they stop there. They say that someday they will put matters right, someday they will do something about it; yet they remain where they are. In this parable Christ placed another “arose.” But before the second “arose,” He placed the word “and”: “And he arose and went.” In other words, he acted upon what he had decided. That is the point. Make the decision. Get up and go. “I will go tomorrow,” you say.
Satan, who tells you to go tomorrow, will tell you to go the following day when tomorrow becomes today. And if you give him room again, he will keep telling you, “The next day.” There are people who recognized many years ago that they had sinned and have carefully considered it all, yet they still have not gone to disclose it to Christ. This is what the parable teaches: once you have repented, rise and go. “But I am a great prodigal.” So be it. No one will ask you why you sinned. There is only One who continually asks whether you are willing to rise. As the divine John Chrysostom says, “To fall is human, but to remain fallen is satanic.” Those who do not rise, who do not confess, who do not disclose their sins to the proper authority—the authority able to put their case in order—
are held fast by Satan. He is not almighty; we are the ones who give him such power. If we desire it, we can break those bonds. And you know that Christ will not judge us simply because we sinned. He would not have cast Adam out merely because he sinned, if Adam had repented; he was cast out also because he did not repent. “I do not ask how you fell. I do not ask the causes of your fall; they do not concern Me. One thing concerns Me: do you want to rise?” That is the issue. As we said, the sheep must bleat for the shepherd to find it. In exactly the same way, a person must show concern for his own salvation. Most people do not. But this son arose,
went, and made known his decision—his metanoia, his repentance. How beautiful is the description of the father and his conduct. Significantly, it says that the father saw him while he was still a long way off. To see him from afar means that he had been watching and keeping vigil at all times. God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. God does not watch over us only when we do good and remain close to Him. He watches over us even more when we are far away, taking care that we are not utterly crushed, in the hope that one day we may return. The father saw him from afar. “But what if he comes from this direction, old man? What if he comes from that direction? Or from over there?”
“No, he will come from here.” “But how do you know?” “Because this is the way he left.” This is a great lesson. We leave by stealing, and we return by making chandeliers with what we stole. Is that the road of return? The road is this: if you stole, you must give it back. If you cannot restore fourfold, as Zacchaeus did, you must at least repay what you owe. If you dishonored a woman, you must marry her. “But she is not suitable.” How was she suitable when you dishonored her, but not suitable to become your wife? How is she suitable to be your mistress, but not your wife? You must marry her. You cannot pay her off; honor has no price. If you accused or slandered someone,
You must go and personally ask that person’s forgiveness: “I slandered you out of malice.” There is no offsetting one wrong against another. The principle is that the remedy must correspond to the wrong. This son left by this road, and by this road I await his return. That is why his father saw him while he was still far off. And now we are shown how God receives us when we return, when we take that one step. The old man ran, it says. Imagine an old man running! Has he lost his mind? Do old men run? Yet he runs. When a soul is at stake, God runs to meet us and embrace us, without counting the cost.
Away with all our lies, excuses, and the rest: “He put me up to it; she told me to; they did this to me; they made me what I am.” No. Let us speak plainly. He ran and embraced him. “He fell upon his neck.” Do you grasp that phrase? “He fell upon his neck and kissed him fervently.” In simple words, he covered him with kisses. There is another such scene on Great and Holy Thursday, when Judas did this to our Christ: he embraced Him and kissed Him fervently, but in order to betray Him. That is how human beings behave. But God does not behave that way. God embraces a person just as he is. This is the answer to those whom the devil deceives into thinking that they must first put themselves right and only then go to Christ.
“Let me prepare myself first; yes, let me get things in order.” What are you going to do? Will you go to the hospital only after you have recovered? Will you go to the doctor only after you have recovered? Will you take the medicine only after you have recovered? Will you first get well and then go to the hospital? You are being ridiculous, to put it mildly. God is not defiled—not by our fornication, not by our killing of children, not by our fraud, not by our adultery. Nothing can defile Him.
If we knew the worth of a single soul, we would understand why God acts this way. But we do not know. We do not possess the measure by which to reckon it. What can we measure? We can lose our minds over our little plot of land near the Acropolis, but we do not know the value of a soul. Only He knows—the One who left His throne, came down here, was torn upon the ravines, and suffered all that He suffered for that soul. He has told us, but we have no measure with which to comprehend His words. The whole world, He says, cannot equal the value of one soul. Does He not say it? He does. You understand, then, the inner state in which this child found himself. He was overwhelmed. It took him time to regain his balance and find his words. At last he came to himself and said what he had prepared back in the pigsty. What was it? “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am not worthy to be called your son.” He still has two more words to say, but the Father does not allow him; He cuts him short. Why, my Christ, since You are God and know what this child still wishes to say,
why do You not let him say it? “Make me as one of your hired servants.” He did not let him say it; He stopped him. Then the commands began: “Bring out the best robe; bring him shoes; give him the pledge”—that is, the ring—“and kill the fatted calf.” Why? Here is another lesson, for those who think of themselves as God’s servants, as hired workers. Some serve in charitable work, others labor for the restoration of the Holy Places, and others perform various ministries, expecting in the end, like God’s hired workers, to receive their wages—their pay envelope. God has no need of such things. He has no need of hired workers. “I have angels to serve Me. I want you as My child.”
Why do I want you within My household, within My family? Listen carefully when, the day after tomorrow, you hear the Gospel of the Last Judgment. You will hear of the two credentials required for you to enter, and then you will understand what God is saying here and why He stopped the son. He has no need of hired labor. “I want you as My son. I want you to feel at ease beside Me. I did not wish to make slaves in the world. No; I wished to make sons, fellow heirs who will be with Me in eternity and feel free in My presence.” Who keeps looking at the clock, wondering when he can leave, if he feels he is at home? The father says the same thing later to the other young man in his household. By extension, he says it to us as well, but we do not understand. That is why he stopped him. Do not think of yourselves as slaves. Know yourselves as children of God. And when you know yourself as a child of God,
that is, as belonging to Christ and therefore as a child of God, everything changes. Shall we say, “Our Father, who art in heaven,” and then live like orphans? God is your Father, and you are afraid? What more could I want? Once, it is said, a ship was caught in a terrible storm and was about to sink. Everyone ran to take whatever they could. One woman found nothing and went down into the hold to look. Soon they would have to leap into the sea. There she found a man asleep and snoring. “Get up!” she said. “We are drowning! What are you doing down here?” “Why are you carrying on like this, madam?” he replied. “What kind of brute are you?” she cried. “What am I? I am the captain’s son. My father is at the helm.” Then he turned over and went back to sleep, trusting that his father was the captain.
His father would not let the ship sink, so the son slept peacefully. Do we possess such strength today? You will, if you truly believe that you are a child of God. A few days ago we celebrated the Veneration of Saint Peter’s Chains. Peter knows that he is to be slaughtered the next day. The days of Unleavened Bread are ending, and the executions are about to begin. Yet Peter was asleep, with his shoes and outer garments removed, surrounded by four soldiers. Do you have that courage? You are not yet a Christian if you do not. You cannot say the Our Father; leave it for someone else to say.
And so, the result.
The result: “Bring out the best robe.” What is this first robe, this best robe? What does Christ wish to teach here? We are descendants of Adam. Before the Fall, Adam wore a robe woven by God.
At Vespers on Cheesefare Sunday, when we commemorate Adam’s expulsion, the hymn says: “Wretched as I am, I have stripped myself of the robe woven by God.” When Adam sinned, he lost this grace. He saw his nakedness and ran to make the bikinis of today—fig leaves—to hide himself. Later, when a person receives Christ, he is clothed once again in this grace. The Orthodox Church expresses this beautifully when the priest blesses the little child’s garments and says, “Grant me a robe of light, O You who clothe Yourself with light as with a garment.” The white garments worn by the infant after Baptism signify what follows his burial and resurrection, for Baptism is not merely a social bond between families, nor an engagement ceremony.
It is the burial of one who was spiritually dead and his resurrection, and the soul is clothed anew. This is what we signify with what is commonly called the burial shroud. Many people have brought a shroud from Jerusalem for their body, yet they still have no shroud for their soul and remain unworthy. We drape it over the newly baptized, front and back, to cover our nakedness and to declare outwardly that we have not remained merely descendants of the naked Adam, but have been reborn as brothers and sisters of the new Adam, and that we are no longer afraid. The Church reminds us of this during Holy Week when she says, “I see Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter.” Why do you have no garment?
You are baptized. Where did you leave it? You stand here as one who has been baptized; what did you do with the garment? There is also a beautiful parable about this robe, the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew chapter 22. Read it and see what happened there. “Bind him,” it says, “and cast him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,” because he had no wedding garment. We Orthodox, speaking here of ourselves, receive this robe in Baptism, so that we may be clothed and no longer remain naked descendants of Adam, but belong to Jesus, clothed in His grace. He gives it to us after a renunciation and a confession. We renounce Satan, all his works, and all his service, and we confess Christ and commit ourselves to following Him. “I renounce you, Satan!”
“I unite myself to You, O Christ.” We renounce Satan’s works and worship; three times we spit upon him, then turn toward the East and recite the Creed—ourselves if we are adults, or through our sponsors if we are infants. And when we confess Jesus and pray, “Grant me a robe of light,” Christ clothes us. This new garment of the soul, which we receive in Baptism, will remain clean if we guard it and do not sin. If at some point we stain it, we can cleanse it in the second Baptism, which is metanoia—repentance—and Confession, washing it in the blood of the Lamb, for the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin.
As you know, when we reach ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, or sometimes fifteen years of age, things change for most people. They turn toward Christ and say to Him, “I renounce You, O Christ.” “Why, my child? Where will you go?” “I will go with the devil.” “Why?” “You ask chastity of me; he says it is unnecessary. You ask fasting of me; he says it is unnecessary. You ask me to welcome children when I enter Holy Matrimony; he says they are unnecessary—throw them down the drain.” “So you are leaving? Go, then—but wait before you leave.
Give Me back that white garment I gave you. You cannot wear it while going off to wallow wherever you please.” No matter how much white clothing a fornicator wears—white garments that symbolize purity—it gains him nothing.
Nor does it help if a woman carries lilies at her wedding after having roamed all over Phaleron and who knows where else. The Ascension, the Annunciation—this gift, this garment of the soul received at Baptism, is withdrawn because they have departed from God, and they are all naked.
It is withdrawn and kept in the treasury of the Church. Whenever the prodigal man or woman returns, the wedding garment is given back in Holy Confession. An angel brings it and clothes that person in white once again. If I work in an office, a bank, or a large shop and wear some uniform or garment bearing an emblem, then if I leave, depart from my post, and break with the management, must I not hand it back? Will they not remove it and take it from me? Can I keep wearing it as I go about outside? I cannot. It is exactly the same in the things of Christ. You have departed; you do not do the will of God; you are naked.
It will not help to place upon you burial shrouds from the Jordan or Jerusalem. If death finds you suddenly, they may dress your body in whatever they wish, but you lack the shroud of the soul. Your soul has no garment. What, then, was required? Not merely an outward symbol upon the body. There is a beautiful order here: the son must pass through all this preparation before he can reach the fatted calf. The father did not allow him to go in and recline at the table, “where the abundant calf is served,” as Saint Gregory the Theologian says, at the Orthodox tables of the Church, while still wearing the garment of the pigsty. “Father, give me a prayer, because you are a holy man.” What sort of prayer would that be? A prayer of absolution? You must first hear the truth about what you have done. Have you done nothing?
Should it simply be forgiven? My congratulations to you that the Church has no such prayer! Go away from here. There are people who have done every imaginable thing and yet refuse to change this garment. Just as they come from the marketplace, from unlawful living, or from who knows where else, they go to receive Holy Communion as a customary observance on Great and Holy Thursday, the Dormition Fast, or Christmas. No. Is that the proper act? Is that the right and saving course? You must repent, make your metanoia known, and confess. An angel of the Lord, who is present there, will change your robe. Then you will go in, recline at the supper, and the great joy will begin. Many think that when they confess, they are confessing to the priest.
I heard the demon itself admit what happens in this case. “Do you think,” it said, “that you are confessing to the priest? No. Emmanuel is standing there with Michael and Gabriel.” That is what it said. In other words, in the person of the priest, our Lord is there with the Archangels, receiving our metanoia—our repentance. He sees how we come, what we conceal, and how we conduct our lives, and He gives to each accordingly. You may deceive everyone else, but you cannot deceive Christ. Do not forget it, O man: you cannot deceive Christ. Christ is not confined to one place or time. He is present everywhere, and above all He is there when you go to renew your confession: “I renounce you, Satan,” and, “I unite myself once again to You, O Christ,” so that you may receive that white garment. “Put shoes on his feet.” What are these shoes? Why does he need them? If you had been paying attention...
...at the Baptism, if you had remained in your place instead of looking around to see who was there and what gifts the godmother was giving, you would have understood. When the priest anoints the soles of the child’s feet with holy chrism, what does he say? He certainly does not say, “Go and do as you please.” He says, “That he may tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy.” He gives the child a gift of grace; he gives him strength so that he may overcome and trample down every adversity. And when Satan sees that you are escaping from him, he will summon many of his own people to try to hinder you. Yet at the same time, Christ gives you the grace to overcome them. That is why all the faithful who have returned to Christ can testify to how Satan fought against them until they came to understand what was happening...
...and became firmly established in their new way of life. This is the power you are given. Do not expect to manage alone, as some people say: “I cannot give it up.” And who told you that you could give it up by yourself? Is this news to us? Christ has already told you: “Without Me you can do nothing.” How, then, can you now tell me that you can give it up on your own? No, I cannot give it up by myself. “Put a ring on his hand.” This ring, this pledge of betrothal, reminds a person that every soul is betrothed to a Bridegroom—the Bridegroom of the Church, Christ. He once called that generation adulterous. Why? Because it commits adultery with the devil. And woe to the woman who has a fiancé but also has another man, or to the man who has a fiancée but also has another woman. How does that strike you? Is it right? This is exactly the same kind of situation.
Take care, O man. Your soul is betrothed to Christ, the Bridegroom of the Church. You are a member of the Church, and on that day the marriage of the Lamb will take place, as the Apocalypse says so beautifully. The ring reminds you that you have entered into a bond of kinship and that your soul has given its marriage vows. So take care from this moment onward. Then he went inside, and there was joy—that great joy of which it is said: “There is joy over one sinner who repents.” So it is with us as well: there is joy over every prodigal who returns, passes worthily and properly through all this preparation, and reaches Holy Communion—that is, the fatted calf. Here the scene changes, and a second person appears, whose story raises an entire matter of its own.
The elder brother of the Prodigal Son has his own troubles. Since many of us belong to the elder brother’s category, and since our time is up, allow me to continue this at our next meeting. I pray that the Holy God, whatever may happen to us, will give us the strength to repent and return through Holy Confession, so that we may be saved and there may be joy in heaven over us as well. Amen.

Λέει, ένας τσοπάνης που είχε 100 πρόβατα, έχασε ένα. Άφησε τα 99 και πήγε κάτω στα φαράγγια και βρήκε το ένα. Το έβαλε επ' ώμου και επέστρεψε χαίρων. Είναι ανάγλυφο το θέμα. Ο Ποιμήν ο ερχόμενος είναι ο Κύριος, το πρόβατο είναι ο άνθρωπος. Εκείνο το πρόβατο το βρήκε. Εμάς γιατί δεν μας βρίσκει ο Ποιμήν; Εκεί άφησε τη θέση Του, άφησε τη δόξα Του, το θρόνο Του και κατέβη. Γιατί εμάς δεν μας βρίσκει; Για να βρεθεί ένα πρόβατο, πρέπει να θέλει και αυτό. Όταν δεν θέλει το πρόβατο, πώς πρέπει να το βρει ο ποιμήν;
Βρίσκεται το πρόβατο αυτό; Πώς το βρίσκετε όμως;
Όλα έχουν τέρμα, σταματούν κάπου. Και δεν μετριώνται τα πράγματα του Θεού με το μέτρο αλλά με το ζύγι. Όχι πόσα· τι βάρος έχουνε αυτά. Βλέπετε σήμερα τα πράγματα πώς τα μετρούν; Στα 100 εκατομμύρια. Δηλαδή τι είμαστε εμείς;
Ταφή ενός νεκρού κατά το πνεύμα και ανάσταση, και ενδύεται η ψυχή αυτή. Είναι εκείνο που εμείς το συμβολίζουμε, το σάβανο το λεγόμενο. Πολλοί το έχουν φέρει από τα Ιεροσόλυμα, έχουν φέρει σάβανο για το σώμα τους, αλλά δεν έχουν σάβανο για την ψυχή τους και ανάξια ακόμα. Και το ρίχνουμε μπρος πίσω για να καλύψουμε τη γύμνια μας, να πούμε και να αποδείξουμε και εξωτερικώς ότι δεν μείναμε του γυμνού Αδάμ απόγονοι μόνον, αλλά είμεθα του νέου Αδάμ αναγεννημένα αδέλφια και δεν φοβούμεθα άλλο. Η Εκκλησία μας το υπενθυμίζει αυτό, άλλωστε, τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, όταν λέγει: «Τον νυμφώνα σου βλέπω, Σωτήρ μου, κεκοσμημένον, και ένδυμα ουκ έχω ίνα εισέλθω εν αυτώ». Γιατί δεν έχεις ένδυμα;
Όχι σάβανα από τον Ιορδάνη και από τα Ιεροσόλυμα να σου βάλουνε. Άμα σε βρει ο θάνατος έκτακτος, ό,τι θέλει να σου βάλουνε, διότι σου λείπει το σάβανο της ψυχής. Δεν έχει ένδυμα η ψυχή. Τι ήταν; Όχι συμβολικά το σώμα μόνο απ' έξω. Εδώ έχει την ωραία τάξη: για να περάσει όλη αυτή η προετοιμασία, για να περάσει, να φτάσει στον Μόσχον. Δεν τον άφησε να περάσει, να πάει, να παρακαθίσει στην τράπεζα. «Ένθα ο μόσχος ο πολύς», κατά τον Άγιον Γρηγόριον τον Θεολόγον, στις ορθόδοξες τράπεζες της Εκκλησίας, με τη στολή της χοιροκαλύβης. «Πάτερ μου, μια ευχή, γιατί είσαι άγιος». Τι ευχή θα είναι αυτή; Συγχωρητήριος; Να ακούς τι έχεις κάνει. Δεν έχεις κάνει τίποτα;
