Summary

God’s commandments are attainable and beneficial, so believers should obey them rather than dismiss them through human reasoning or convenient excuses. Daniel proposed a ten-day trial of legumes and water, after which the four young men appeared healthier than those eating from the king’s table. God granted the four companions exceptional knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, demonstrating that faithful obedience bears both spiritual and practical fruit.

We are quick to find all kinds of excuses and to set aside certain commandments of God, even though they are for our own good. This evening I would like to draw out an incident from the Old Testament. The Old Testament is like a treasure chest containing every kind of subject that can help a person. Yet we do not read it, and so there are many things we do not know. This incident will show us once again that when God speaks, a person should obey rather than offer his own opinions. Wherever God speaks,

man should not answer with something else. God asks man for obedience. God has shown us how, yet people ask, “How can this be done?” But God has said it. Could God possibly command things that cannot be carried out? If so, what kind of God would He be? How would He be wise or just? How could He judge us if He had given us unbearable commandments to fulfill? Can you blame an infant when you tell him to lift twenty kilos in his hand and he cannot do it? How could you blame him? Could God, then, judge me tomorrow if He had laid down commandments that cannot be fulfilled? And yet, guided by our own reasoning,

by what science often says and by what the world says, while disregarding what God says, we readily reject His commandments. We are now in a period of mild fasting, and most of us have not even taken it into account. Guided by our own supposedly Gospel-based reasoning, our own stomach, our own appetite, and our own science, we have simply ignored it. What is the Forty-Day Fast? It is a beautiful and gentle fast. It gives the body rest without harming it in the least. It includes food cooked with oil, and fish on Saturdays and Sundays. So why should all those other foods enter into it, unless, of course, there is an illness?

And by illness I do not mean the sort we so readily claim: our corns swell up, so we eat a steak and consider ourselves ill. Illnesses of that kind are illnesses of our own making. We shall pay for this way of living here in this world. That is precisely why a person must believe in God. This applies above all to everyone, and especially to those raising children. They give in to their children, feed them, pamper them, and then expect to be able to restrain them later. But can those children be restrained afterward? No, they cannot.

They want their children to have wisdom. But how can children have wisdom without fasting and without self-control? Give them teachers, tutoring, and anything else you like—you are still making a brick; you are accomplishing nothing. Wisdom comes from God and is given by God when there is fear of God and obedience to His commandments. The incident I would like to bring to your attention is from the prophet Isaiah—from the prophet Daniel. Daniel is one of the four who are called the major prophets in the Old Testament, for there are four major prophets and twelve minor ones. The first group consists of the prophet Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Then there are the other twelve, the minor prophets. Listen to what happened. It was a time when the Israelites, because of their sins, had once again been brought into captivity.

They were now under the heel of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, where they remained enslaved for seventy years. Listen to what it says: “In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, together with part of the vessels of the house of God.” The Lord delivered him, because unless the Lord gives up a city, the conqueror cannot seize it. But when those within it are unbelieving, blasphemous, and profane, the city is delivered into the hands of its enemies, to be enslaved and mistreated.

The wording of Scripture is striking: “And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, together with part of the vessels.” It was as though someone had entered a church today and taken the holy chalices and patens and all the precious things found within the church. “And he brought them to the land of Shinar, into the house of his god”—an idolatrous god in Babylon—“and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god,” not of the true God. “And the king gave an order”—King Nebuchadnezzar issued a command—“to Ashpenaz, the chief of his eunuchs.” What was he to do? “He was to bring some of the children of Israel,”

“some of the royal family and of the nobility, young men”—that is, from among the Israelite captives he was to choose young men—“without any blemish.” None were to be blind, lame, or in any way impaired. They were to be handsome and presentable, “skillful in all wisdom”—intelligent and quick-witted, with bright minds, as we would say—“endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and capable of standing in the king’s palace; and he was to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.” Choose, he says, a few intelligent children without any blemish, bring them here to the palace, and let us educate them in our own wisdom,

so that we may instill our own way of thinking in them. Evidently, he wanted to turn these children into Janissaries, so to speak, and later use them against their own people. He wanted to make them eunuchs with regard to their faith and their own convictions, to strip away their former way of thinking, and then place them over their own countrymen. That appears to have been his aim. “And the king appointed for them a daily portion from the king’s delicacies.” Though they were captives, because they were being trained for work that the Babylonians needed, they would be fed with royal provisions; they would eat from the king’s own table. You understand what an honor and what a flattering thing this was: to be a slave and a captive, yet to be fed and served from the royal table. How were they expected to feel about it?

They were expected to regard it as flattering and not resist at all. “And from the wine which he drank”—they were even to drink royal wine, so to speak. “And after they had been brought up for three years,” after they had been educated and trained, “they were to stand before the king.” The king intended them to serve as his right-hand men, and undoubtedly to use them against their own countrymen, whose language and mentality they understood. The chief eunuch did indeed choose many children from among the young Hebrews. But four stood out among them. “Among them were some of the children of Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.” They were four young men from the tribe of Judah, and the chief eunuch gave them new names. He

immediately replaced their names; he renamed them: “He called Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, Mishael Meshach, and Azariah Abednego.”

Daniel! But Daniel resolved in his heart not to defile himself with the king’s delicacies or with the wine that the king drank. He decided not to eat what was offered at the royal table. There was no fasting there, no fear of God—nothing at all. So he pleaded with the chief eunuch that he might not defile himself: if possible, let us not eat these things. And he prayed that God would illumine the chief eunuch and move him to agree that these young men should not eat them.

God caused Daniel to find favor and mercy before the chief eunuch. This is a lesson for some women and some men. I want to fast, but the tyrant comes and tells me to cook meat for him: “You will cook this for the children.” Or the wife comes to her husband and says, “You will bring me what I want. I do not know what has come over you. You may have gone mad, but the children and I are going to eat.” We have such situations in our homes. “What should we do, Mr. Panagopoulos?” What should you do? Ask Daniel what you should do. Pray to God, and you will hear the answer. “I do not know what you are going to eat. Go hungry if you want. But you will cook this for us.” Then what will become of your fast? Yet we have never prayed to God when trying to do something that is for our own good

and for the glory of God. Instead, we rely on our own reasoning. “What can I do?” What can you do besides pray? There is nothing else you can do. “And what can prayer accomplish?” God can speak good things to the person who, for the moment, is still blind and cannot see. We do not know: tomorrow that person may begin to see, and may see better than you and me, though I have already condemned him or her to Hell. There is pride in this. We do not know how God works or when each person reaches maturity. We want others to measure up to our own ego. Yet when we ourselves fall behind, we do not see these things. Others wait for us; God waits for us. After all, you are undergoing a trial, and you must show patient endurance. This, then, is a great lesson: when we find ourselves in such difficult circumstances, we must not go to extremes.

Daniel and the other three young men found themselves in precisely such a situation. We too should secretly bend the knee and say: “My God, You know. It is Great Lent, my God. Tonight is Friday, my God. Tonight is Wednesday, my God. It is the weekend, and tonight we must be watchful. Yet my husband will not let me; my wife will not let me.” Pray, and you will see how they will let you. But we do not pray. We look to our own reasoning, or we try by our own methods to get around these difficult moments.

It says here that Daniel prayed, and God caused him to find favor before the chief eunuch. Yet the chief eunuch raised his objections, as any man might. That was how he understood the matter. “I cannot do this,” he told him. “If you do not eat properly—if you do not eat meat and whatever is served from the royal table—you will grow weak. Then, when the king asks tomorrow, ‘Why are these young men so thin?’”

“he will think I was stealing your food and failing to feed you properly. What will happen to my head then?” That was the concern of this man, who did not believe in God and knew nothing of such matters. He looked only at what science says and what nature says. That was all he could see. As for the One who made science and the One who made nature, and the truth that “where God wills, the order of nature is overcome”—these were merely fine print to him. He knew nothing of such things. Christians today do not know them, so how much less could he have known them?

The chief eunuch said to Daniel: “I fear my lord the king, who appointed your food and drink. What if he sees your faces looking more dejected than those of the other young men your age? Then you would endanger my head before the king.” In other words, he said, my head will not remain safely on my shoulders if he sees you looking like that. This was how he viewed the matter.

He thought as many mothers think today: that unless they feed their pampered little boys custards, biscuits, and all sorts of other things, the children will grow weak. If they give them fruit broth, for example, or something else, such as food cooked with oil, they think the children will become thin. Yet children are often healthier when they are thinner. There would be no childhood illnesses, nor would vaccinations be needed, if children were fed naturally—mainly with their mother’s milk, rice water, carrots, and a thousand other things. But we insist on stuffing children with protein upon protein, and it settles here in their chests. You see the phlegm, the mucus, and all the rest. The body should not have such things. The children would not even catch colds. Nothing would happen to them. But because we feed them unnaturally, without believing in God, we keep the scales beside us,

and weigh the child to see how much weight he has gained. As if your mother weighed you, or mine weighed me! They would tie us there with a cord to the leg of a chair and come back to look at us in the afternoon. Did anything happen to us? Nothing happened to us. We have departed from faith in God and now put our trust in things that God Himself has also given, but which must be used properly, at the right time, and with discernment. In any case, Daniel told him to put them to the test. He said, “Of course, we do not want your head to be brought in on a platter, but let us conduct a trial.” Daniel spoke to Melzar, whom the chief eunuch had placed over Daniel, because the chief eunuch had appointed another, more junior official, as we would say, to oversee these young men. And Daniel said to him:

“Please test your servants for ten days.” The king had said that for three years they would eat from that table and remain there together. But Daniel said, “Give us a trial of ten days. Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given legumes to eat.” Leave aside the meat and all the rest. “And let us drink water”; leave aside the royal beverages. “Then let our appearance and the appearance of the young men who eat the king’s food be examined before you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” Let us make a trial, he says. The four of us will eat legumes and drink water, while the others eat from the royal table. You are a worthy man, and you will see our faces for yourself.

You will see the faces of the others as well, and afterward we shall proceed according to the results. What home today keeps legumes? Where are the three foods beginning with the letter F? Where are the fasolia, the beans? Where are the fakes, the lentils? Where is the fava? Where are these three foods that ought to be found in the home on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday? They are gone. “They cause bloating,” people say. Really? As though God made a mistake in creating them! God made no mistake in creating them. You made the mistake by spoiling yourself, and that is why you cast them aside. People should know what has been said about beans: from the plant kingdom, they can fully take the place of meat, and they do so without toxins—without toxins. People should know this. Are you taking medicine or iron? Bring lentils into your home.

Keep lentils in your home. Eat lentils with a salad and nothing else—not even bread. See what happens. See how your blood changes, how beneficial they are for a small child, for the stomach, and for the intestines. Even that bloating and those gases are needed by the body. Try it. But who will do so? Did God make a mistake when He created these things? Yet children today do not eat them. You eat them, but the children do not. They are placed on the table, and the children refuse them. But how is a child to know what to eat from an early age? What should children eat? These pasteurized baby foods are disgusting. Even a little monkey wants some of what you are eating. Put some in the child’s mouth. Take some of your own cooked food and put it in the child’s mouth, and see what happens. The body wants it. The body was made by God, and God created corresponding things in the material world that nourish it and that the body naturally desires. Give the child a little bread,

give him a little mashed bean, put it in his mouth, and see what happens—he will nearly bite your hands off for more. But give him some of those disgusting foods, and he does not want them, because his body is asking for something else, something it needs and that God created. We have not taught our children these things. Let me tell you of a clever idea I encountered abroad, where I was staying recently. I was a guest in the home of a priest. It was the Annunciation. The priest was very well presented, and so was his wife. They were very young—he was thirty-one, she was twenty-five—and they had three children. On Wednesdays and Fridays they ate food prepared without oil. There in Boston—and I mean Boston, where every worldly good is available—she said to me, “Thanasis will not eat when we have food without oil. He avoids it and asks only for fruit juice,” because orange juice is available there throughout the year.

Apples, and therefore apple juice, are available all year round. Grapes in their natural form are available all year round. Throughout the day, they will certainly drink four or five glasses of juice from these fruits. So the child asks for that instead. “But do you know what I do?” she said. “I secretly put a little oil in his food to make it tasty. My purpose, of course, is not to make him fast strictly. My purpose is to teach him to fast, so that he will distinguish these days and see that the foods eaten on Wednesdays and Fridays are tasty too. In this way, as he grows older, we will help him become accustomed to fasting as well.” “What should we do, Mr. Panagopoulos?” We must make use of every suitable means. Do you hear the wisdom in this? A young woman of twenty-five who hardly even knows Greek—she was born in America, though she studied at the Academy of Saint Basil there and became a kindergarten teacher.

She has now learned Greek, speaks it imperfectly, and teaches other children. Her little device is not based on the fear that, if the child eats oil, he will be defiled. Rather, she wants to teach him to fast. She wants to teach him that the foods provided for fasting also come from God. So she uses this little trick. Wednesday and Friday are fast days, as is Great Lent. Do you hear the wisdom in this?

Where are our own mothers who do this? Who believes in these things? Who strives to mark the day as distinct? Often the point is not whether we ate oil or not. The point is to find a way to distinguish Wednesday and Friday and the days of fasting. Let the food be cooked with oil if necessary. Do we not eat food cooked with oil once or twice during the rest of the week? Of course we do. We do not eat meat and fish day and night, like cats and dogs, if I may put it that way. Is that not so? Then let such a meal be served on one of the fast days, so that the distinction is preserved. Do not serve it on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday; serve it on Wednesday and Friday. In this way there will be a sense that today is different: Wednesday is the day on which my God was betrayed, and Friday is the day on which my God was crucified for me, so that I might breathe and stand here speaking all this foolishness at this very moment. Do you understand? That is precisely why I say this.

A person would be benefited if he were willing to learn these spiritual ways of dealing with things, for that is what they are. See how beautifully Daniel first prayed; and when he prayed, God disposed the official kindly toward him, as we shall see. At the same time, God illumined Daniel as to what he should say, because when a person finds himself in a difficult moment, he cannot produce wisdom of his own. What did our Lord say? When you find yourselves in a difficult position and must give an answer concerning your faith—for this is a matter of faith: I believe in Christ, that He was crucified and died for me, and therefore I must mourn—then, He says, I will give you wisdom, and I will give you the answer for that occasion. Set aside your own clever ideas. Offer a short prayer within yourself and say, “My God, how should I conduct myself now? A fast is approaching.

The forty-day fast is approaching; Holy Week is approaching; tomorrow is Wednesday, tomorrow is Friday, or tomorrow is some other fast day. Illumine me so that I may know how to deal with my husband, if it is the husband who objects, or with my wife and children. What should I say?” Today a woman called me and asked about this. Was it a matter of her health? “You must eat something.” Do you think so? The evil one is deceiving you. You may be able to eat something and still receive Holy Communion; it need not become an obstacle. Just take care not to devour other people, I tell her. If you eat a little oil, it will not harm you. “But what will my children say?” Explain it to your children, and if you are a Christian, close your home to outsiders when you need to eat. Do not go out and advertise it to the world, because others do not know your condition or what your body needs. You may therefore receive what you need in a natural way, instead of being given it unnaturally through injections and liver extracts while at the same time abstaining from oil.

Are you fasting from oil while they are giving you meat products through injections? What sort of fasting from oil is that? The devil is deceiving you. You do not know your faith; you do not know how God regards fasting or what fasting truly is: it does not kill the body but kills the passions. I have seen that many of us lack understanding of these matters. We ought to know them, so that we may conduct ourselves with ease and freedom, because Christianity is freedom, and so that we may also guide someone else who does not know. We should be able to say, “This is how it is; take care to do this.” We should speak of a well-trodden path, so to speak: “I have passed through this myself. I know it, and I speak to you from experience.” In this way we can support and guide someone else. So Daniel says, “After you have tested us, act as you think best,” within those three years, of course.

These were the ten days Daniel proposed. Certainly Daniel did not say these words merely out of his own cleverness. As I said earlier, he had already prayed, and surely he prayed again now when faced with this new objection that required an answer. “So the steward listened to him in this matter and tested them for ten days. And at the end of the ten days, their faces appeared fairer, and they were healthier in body, than all the young men who ate the king’s food.” That is the answer. And it is true.

There are children who are fed with every resource science can offer and with every delicacy imaginable, yet they are thin as boards. And there are children who do not even have enough bread, yet they are rosy-cheeked and so robust that, as we say, if you tap one cheek, the other seems ready to burst. And often this is seen in families that have not been ungrateful toward God and toward their great calling—that is, families that are not tiny by choice, but have welcomed the family God gave them. If you see those children, who do not have so many good things to eat because in large families provisions are often lacking and the parents cannot provide everything, nevertheless...

They do not fall ill as the only child or the two children often do, looking pale yellow and sickly, because they follow the way of God. When I went to Montreal for ten days, I stayed in a home with six children and a seventh in the mother’s womb. The husband was thirty-two or thirty-three, and the wife was twenty-six or twenty-seven. Of course, with seven children, the mother and father make nine people—and with a guest, ten. Even if they were wealthy shipowners, they still could not attend to every detail, even if they possessed everything. Yet not one child was ill. They were all rosy-cheeked, orderly, and well cared for. I also visited homes with one child, or two at most. They did not possess the happiness, health, and vitality

of that household, which was like a nest where a mother rabbit’s little ones played without a care—without quarrels, stubbornness, or rivalry of any kind. When you have one or two children, jealousy and envy arise because all your attention is fixed upon them. But when you have six, seven, or ten, which one can you constantly watch? You cannot give all your attention to any one of them. You let them be and simply try to fill them with bread or whatever else you have. Unfortunately, we today are unwilling to reflect or to learn from our own lives. You need not study the history of nations or read Church history and other such works. Read the history of your own home. Athens today, for example, where I am speaking, is made up almost entirely of people from the provinces. There is scarcely an old Athenian population today. Everyone comes from Evrytania, Kravara, the Peloponnese, Crete, and elsewhere, and most of their parents had...

Seven children, eight, five, six, or four. I am one of the thirteen children my mother bore. My wife is one of the thirteen children her mother bore. We lived, we made our way, and we went without many things. Why should you not endure some deprivation? What harm did I suffer because I went without? Did it harm me in any way? It did not. And what did you gain by never going without, when having everything deprived you of certain necessary foundations? You think it is good for a person to have everything and to lack nothing. It is not good when there is no discernment. We often set discernment aside, and circumstances themselves then force us back down to earth. Of course, the world has its own saying: “God’s servant fasts because he has nothing to eat.” In other words, people claim that fasting was invented out of hunger,

to console those who have nothing, whereas it is supposedly not meant for us, whose refrigerators are full. Yet God gives us everything, while each person must choose from those things what is beneficial for him.

Because—yes, God created so many good things for mankind. A person is overwhelmed when he enters a meat market and sees all that God has made for him. The same is true if he goes to a fish market and sees all the species, sizes, and varieties of fish, or if he goes to a fruit and vegetable market. A person is overwhelmed. And Satan says, “He made them for you. Who tells you to abstain from them? Are we to throw them away and let them go to waste?” Yes, devil, He made them for me. But when are they meant for me? Though He made them for me, they are not meant for me at this moment.

I have become entangled in the paths of sin. Anyone who reads the account of creation will see that all these things were made before man was created. God did not create man while leaving him with nothing; He prepared everything for him. God brought man into this dwelling called the world only after attending to its smallest detail. We often move into a house before it is finished, while many things are still lacking, and then we suffer there from damp, warped materials, and other serious problems. But God completed this dwelling called the world down to the smallest detail, brought in His cherished creature, man, and said to him, “All things are lawful,” provided that...

this commandment was observed. Consequently, for man before the Fall, all things were lawful. But for man after the Fall, which is our condition, the words of Paul apply: “All things are lawful, but not all things are beneficial.” You may make use of all things, he says, but they are not beneficial to you now, because you are spiritually dead. You are sinful and weak, and in the condition you have brought upon yourself, these things are not beneficial to you now, O man. Do you understand? What does Basil the Great say? “The law of fasting was given in Paradise. The command, ‘You shall not eat,’ is a law of fasting. If Eve had fasted from the tree...” That is, if she had not eaten from the tree from which God told her not to eat.

“...we would not now need this fast”; we would not need fasting today. But through Satan’s cooperation, Eve became entangled there, and so, in order to return, “Let us fast, therefore, that we may return to Paradise.” God does not need our fasting or our self-control; we need them. And this is not only a matter of the stomach, but also of the flesh. What married couple has heeded Paul’s command? “The time is short.” People fifty, sixty, or seventy years old seek to marry. Where are you going, sir? Why do you want to marry, and whom will you marry? Where is the bearing of children? What is the purpose of Holy Matrimony? Take heed, he says: let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who have husbands...

You should have your husbands as though you did not have them. The time is short. We are going to depart, he says.

Take heed! Consider the proper use of marital relations for the begetting of children. How many married couples have become holy after marriage! Once they had fulfilled the bodily calling of marriage, they devoted themselves to spiritual things. But today’s married couples are concerned only with the flesh—and not for the sake of having children. When they were able to have children, they did not, and now they continue to seek the pleasures of marriage without fulfilling its work. For the work of marriage is the begetting of children. Anyone who deliberately intends never to have children should never have married. Woe to him on the day of judgment. Can anyone absolve him of this? A person who violates the law of God cannot imagine how entangled he will find himself there at the Judgment.

Look how certain married couples search for priests who will give them a prayer of absolution so that they may receive Holy Communion once, twice, or three times a year. They do not want to receive any more often, though previously they did. They want nothing more. And woe when the blind lead the blind. What did Christ say? “If the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

We are cunning. We know these things. When a cat eats the fish, it knows it has done wrong, and when it sees the mistress of the house, it runs away before she strikes it with the fire tongs. The cat runs away. Do I know that I am violating the law of God and betraying my calling as a human being? Of course I know. I know it very well. I am cunning, and I invent clever arguments to justify myself. For us Greeks especially, there is no greater disaster than this, no greater cause of wrath.

The most beautiful and holy nation, a holy people with a calling like that of the Jews in former times, is now shrinking because of its low birth rate. Some seek to gain mastery over the world, while our concern is not to be judged, not to lose our beauty and our pleasures, not to surrender any of the sweetness of sin and the flesh.

In any event, the steward acted as these young men desired, as they had prayed and resolved in their hearts. And what did he do? “Amelsar took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them legumes.”

That is to say:

The proper portions from the royal table still arrived, but the steward set them aside. From inside the palace, it appeared that he was collecting food for everyone. He took the food prescribed by the command—the non-fasting food, whatever was served at the king’s table. A royal table had no fasting foods. He set those portions aside and gave the four young men legumes instead. They also drank water rather than the royal wines. “And to these four young men God gave”—God gave them—“knowledge and understanding in every kind of learning and wisdom.” Do you hear? These young men fasted. They discerned that, as Hebrew youths, as Jews, they could not...

They could not take part in the tables of idolaters. They had to observe their fasts, exercise self-control, and keep their law, disregarding everything else. But the most striking thing is this: while living in a foreign land, amid deprivation and captivity, they had the strength even to think of practicing self-control and fasting. What kind of foundation must they have received at home? Our children leave to study in France, Italy, Romania, and other foreign countries. What foundation do they take with them, and what do they do when they arrive? Do they fast? Do they exercise self-control?

Or what do their mothers and fathers back home say? “Well, when they return, everything will be all right.” Really? They will collapse spiritually now, and you will save them when they come home? When they return, you will get a slipper thrown at your head. They will call you crazy and say that you do not know what you are doing. For they have no foundation that would enable them to discern. Instead of influencing some confused person they meet—someone who does not know why he is here or where he is going—they themselves will be assimilated by evil. Yet evil is not as powerful as good. The good person should always transform the evil one. If a germ enters the body, must that germ necessarily overcome a healthy body? If the body is healthy, it will fight the germ and destroy it. But when the body is unhealthy...

The slightest germ, the smallest epidemic, will be the first thing to bring us down. Is that not so? This, then, is what must happen: the virtues we outwardly ask a person to observe must first be cultivated within. And the greatest workshop is the home—what the child sees, what the child hears, and what the child does from the earliest age. Not after the child has grown up; not after the child has grown up. Someone asked Socrates, “How old should a child be before we appoint a teacher for him?” Socrates asked, “Why? Do you have a child?” “Yes,” the man replied. “How old is he now?” “Six months old.” “Then you have lost six months,” Socrates told him. And if Socrates said that discernment must begin from the first day a child is born, and that from the beginning you must know what you will teach him, what you will permit, and what you will not permit, then I tell you it must begin from the day the child is conceived in his mother’s womb.

Through her own life, her fasting, her self-control, her prayer, and her Holy Communion, the mother herself will sanctify her child from the womb. She will not give birth to a servant of Satan, but to a child of God. Do you understand? It begins then, because the child receives sanctification indirectly. What does the doctor say? What should an expectant mother eat? She is nourishing another body; she has another human being within her. On the basis of medical knowledge, the doctor tells her to eat certain things God has provided because they are necessary for that other body within her.

Thank you. But these things concern the body. If that little living being within her also has an immortal soul from the moment of conception, then there is another way of sustaining the soul as well—both the mother’s soul and the child’s. Are these things today...

Are these things given any attention today? This is precisely why we do not have an angelic society, but a satanic one. We have a jungle; we have beasts. People grow up to be unbelievers, atheists, thieves, and every other kind of person. Why? Because the cell called the family is not functioning as it should today. Children are not given illumination and a firm foundation. If they received illumination and a foundation within the home, they would resist what they encountered outside. They would also help many other children who have no mother. Someone may say, “How can they have no mother? They are not orphans; they have a mother.” Yet it would have been better if they did not have the mother they have, considering how she raises them, equips them, cares for them, admonishes them, and guides them. At times one might almost wish that the mother and father would die, if otherwise they are going to lead their children astray.

Someone will say, “Is it good, then, to make children orphans?” That is not what I mean. I am referring to an observation of John Chrysostom, who says: “A person without a guide has sometimes been lost and sometimes saved. With an evil guide, he has always been lost and never saved.” That is what I mean. Do you understand? A child without a mother, orphaned from an early age, may one day be saved and grow into a good human being. But with a wicked, corrupt, unbelieving mother, the child will certainly become wicked. That is what I mean. In this case, then, Scripture says, “God gave knowledge.” Today private tutors are constantly coming and going from our homes, giving individual lessons. Other children attend...

They attend tutoring schools and so forth. Children without assistance, tutors, or teachers seem unable to make any progress at all. Yet others, despite having many teachers and attending many tutoring schools, remain charming little dullards. Why? Because God is absent from their lives. The child does not pray; the child was never taught to pray. How, then, can God give him the wisdom and understanding to grasp these things?

Have his father and mother read...

Have they read the wise Solomon to see what he advises a person who desires wisdom? They imagine that wisdom is a material thing that professors and tutors can distribute. No, these things will not enter the mind at all. They remain foreign and incomprehensible unless Wisdom, who sits beside us, comes. Thus Solomon says, “Give me Wisdom, who sits beside Your throne, to teach us.” For unless the grace of the Holy Spirit comes and abides beside a person—and the grace of the Holy Spirit does not abide beside everyone—wisdom cannot take root. It will abide with the prudent person, the person of prayer, fasting, and self-control. Wisdom will sit beside him and water his soul. He will perceive things from afar and understand them at once, often without needing repeated instruction. But we look at a few exceptions and ignore the general rule, and so we reject all this. We would be greatly benefited if we believed in God and if our children left home each morning with prayer and with an awareness of the day: “My child, today is Wednesday. Be careful what you take with you and what you eat outside the home. Others will offer you food. Pay no attention to what you see in their bags or in their hands. Do not concern yourself with it. But if you do not have the strength to resist openly, say, ‘I am not feeling well today. Thank you very much, but I will not take it.’” Find a way.

You do not need to draw a pistol, especially if you do not have the strength to stand firm. The others will mock you: “Who suddenly made you a saint? Have you gone mad? What foolish father and backward mother do you have? What age do you think we are living in?” That is how others will ridicule the child. How is the child to stand firm? How is the young woman to stand firm? She must learn to act with discernment and to be careful whom she befriends. All this preparation must take place at home, accompanied by the prayers of her mother and father. Words that do not flow from prayer are like dry mud; they stick nowhere, however much wisdom and understanding they may seem to contain. But words joined to prayer take hold. They lodge like a wedge in the child’s little mind and help the child. Today, above all, we have an obligation to teach them...

We ourselves have an obligation to learn these things and to help as much as we can. God will demand an account from us. God will not ask why I did not make my child a scientist or why I did not send him to this or that place. God has no need of our sciences. God has already built His palaces and made His heating and plumbing. God has done all that. God came into the world for souls; He did not come merely for intellectual development and education. He does not reject these things. He made everything for the sake of man. But if these things lead to man’s destruction, then, as Paul says in the passage I quoted earlier, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial.” I have dwelt on this point, then, because Scripture says that God made Daniel discerning in every vision and dream. He also gave Daniel a special grace—and you know what Daniel later became.

He went on to serve in public life, interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams, uttered prophecies, and so on. For all these things come from God. They are not matters learned at a school desk simply by sitting down and studying. They come through revelation. And for every grace of the Holy Spirit to come and rest upon a person, that person must have prepared a fitting throne upon which the queen—grace—may sit. He must have cleansed himself and created the necessary conditions. Allow me to read it once again, and then pass it on to your children. Those of you who have the Old Testament should open the Book of Daniel to the first chapter and read it. This does not mean that the other wise teachings that arose from the conduct of these four young men are irrelevant. But I am speaking specifically about our subject. Allow me, then, to read it to you once more: “To these four

young men—Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah, and the others”—to these four young men—“God gave.” God gave, granted, and bestowed knowledge and understanding. Knowledge is one thing; understanding is another. I may know many things and yet lack understanding, so that I step into emptiness, take foolish risks, and place myself in danger. Understanding and discernment are a special gift of the Holy Spirit. You may know a thousand things, but if you do not know when to apply each one, then you have neither understanding nor discernment. For, as our forefathers used to say, “There is a time to keep silence and a time to speak.” And often it is better not to speak than to speak. Did our Christ not know how to speak when He stood before Pilate? Yet He remained silent. You may say, “I knew how to answer him.” It would have been better if you had not answered. You would have benefited more by remaining silent than by replying. For many people have knowledge, but they lack understanding.

You put the other person in his place, as they say, but you yourself stepped out of yours. Our purpose is not to save him—or crush him—only to be crushed ourselves as well. No. If he wants to be crushed or to crush someone else, I must remain in my proper place. “But he insulted my dignity.” And what came of it? Did you recover your dignity? Perhaps—but through what you said, you lost the dignity proper to a Christian. You lacked the understanding to see that you should not speak. And if you did speak, you spoke to satisfy your ego and to please others. But if you had remained silent, you would have guarded your soul. Discernment and understanding are greater than all the virtues—greater than love, sacrifice, and everything else. Discernment means knowing how to distinguish rightly. Do you love your child? Yes. Now you must exercise discernment.

Love will be left in the kitchen, and the rod will come down and break the child’s ribs. Love will step aside for the moment. You must discern that he needs a beating now, because tomorrow I will be beaten by him if he is not disciplined today. Do you understand? Discernment is necessary. You hear all this talk about advanced pedagogy and so on. The little one insists on writing with his left hand and stubbornly persists in it. You will break him of using the left, and he will write with the right. Your cat, your child, and your dog will become whatever you train them to be. Discipline them from an early age, and tolerate none of their foolishness. Why is humanity demonized today? Why is today’s youth demonized? Because there has been no proper upbringing at all. We allowed fallen nature, together with all its perversion and corruption, to develop unchecked, and these are the results. Here, then, it says, “knowledge and understanding.” That makes a particular impression on me: “in every kind of learning and wisdom.”

In every kind of learning and wisdom. And He gave Daniel a distinct gift: the intelligence to understand every vision and dream. He could discern what a dream was and what a vision was, whether it came from the good one or from the evil one. And if it came from the good one, what did it mean? If I have seen something, how am I to interpret it? Am I to search through a dream book and cast beans, arranging them in combinations to obtain an answer? Since God gave this gift—since the grace of the Holy Spirit gave it—the answer must come from the Holy Spirit. A person specially gifted with particular wisdom will tell you, “My child, this is what it means. Be careful; guard yourself against this.” This, then, was the gift God gave Daniel in this case. And if you read what follows—and there is a great deal more—you will see!

You will see the things Daniel was later counted worthy to receive, even though, like another Joseph, he was a captive and a slave in a foreign land. The people spent seventy years there in Babylon. Nevertheless, Daniel lost nothing of his faith. He always kept his God before his eyes, and the grace of God was always upon him. I know mothers from villages who knew very little, yet when necessity forced them to let their children go far away in search of work and a better life, they gave them nothing but a small prayer book to hold and their blessing to read the Paraklesis of the Most Holy Theotokos. It was as if they were saying, “My Most Holy Theotokos, once my child turns the corner, I will no longer see him. From that point onward, I entrust him to you.” And through the mother’s prayer, those children,

in those cities that are like whirlwinds, where even the strong cannot hold their ground, as you know,

were preserved. They held firm. They preserved their integrity, kept their faith, maintained their virginity, and continued attending Church. They became substantial members of society—not ordinary members, but sound and wholesome pillars of society.

There are also some who are called pillars of society but are rotten pillars; they are not what they ought to be. I do not know whether tonight’s talk has left anything with you. By His grace, I believe it will leave something. Pay attention to it, hold on to it, reflect upon it, and work through it yourselves. That is all I had to say tonight, by the grace of God.

με το τι λέει πολλές φορές η επιστήμη, το τι λέει ο κόσμος, αδιαφορώντας για το τι λέγει ο Θεός, να τα απορρίπτουμε. Είμεθα σε μια περίοδο μιας ελαφράς νηστείας και οι περισσότεροι ούτε καν την υπολογίσαμε, με βάση τη δικιά μας λογική, Ευαγγελική, με βάση τη δικιά μας την κοιλιά, τη δικιά μας την όρεξη, τη δικιά μας επιστήμη, ούτε καν την υπολογίσαμε. Τι είναι η νηστεία του Σαρανταημέρου; Μια ωραιότατη, ελαφρά νηστεία. Ξεκουράζει τον οργανισμό χωρίς να τον βλάψει καθόλου. Έχει τα λαδερά του, έχει το ψάρι του το Σάββατο και την Κυριακή. Γιατί, τα υπόλοιπα τι δουλειά έχουν στη μέση, εάν βέβαια δεν υπάρχει ασθένεια;

να τους μεταδώσουμε τη δικιά μας νοοτροπία. Προφανώς ήθελε αυτά τα παιδιά να τα χρησιμοποιήσει για γενιτσάρους, ούτως ειπείν, εις βάρος έπειτα των άλλων. Να τους ευνουχίσουν από απόψεως πίστεως, φρονήσεως δικής τους, ξέρω εγώ πώς εσκέπτοντο, και να τους βάλουν επικεφαλής στους δικούς τους πάλι. Κάτι τέτοιο κοίταγε να φτιάξει αυτός. «Και διέταξεν εις αυτούς ο βασιλεύς καθημερινή μερίδα από των βασιλικών εδεσμάτων» και θα τρέφονται, παρότι είναι αιχμάλωτοι, αλλά, διότι εκπαιδεύονται για κάποια δουλειά που μας χρειάζεται, θα τρέφονται εκ των βασιλικών, θα τρώνε δηλαδή από το βασιλικό τραπέζι. Καταλαβαίνετε τι τιμή και τι κολακευτικό είναι να είσαι δούλος τώρα, να είσαι αιχμάλωτος και να τρέφεσαι, να σερβίρεσαι από τη βασιλική τράπεζα. Πώς θα έπρεπε να το αισθανθούν;

Μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν στα τραπέζια των ειδωλολατρών. Θα πρέπει να κάνουν τις νηστείες τους, να κάνουν την εγκράτειά τους, να εφαρμόσουν το νόμο τους, και αδιαφόρησαν. Το χαρακτηριστικό δε το μεγάλο είναι ότι, για να έχουν τη δύναμη εκεί στην ξενιτιά, εκεί στη στέρηση και την αιχμαλωσία, να σκεφτούν να κάνουνε εγκράτεια και νηστεία, τι φόντα είχανε από το σπίτι τους; Φεύγουν τα παιδιά τα δικά μας και πάνε να σπουδάσουν στη Γαλλία, πάνε να σπουδάσουν στην Ιταλία, πάνε να σπουδάσουν στη Ρουμανία, πάνε να σπουδάσουν στο εξωτερικό κλπ. Με τι φόντα φεύγουν και εκεί που πάνε τι κάνουνε; Νηστεύουνε, εγκρατεύονται;

φροντιστήρια έξω κλπ. Παιδιά αβοήθητα, χωρίς φροντιστήρια και χωρίς δασκάλους, δεν μπορούν καν να προχωρήσουν. Κι άλλα, με πολλούς δε δασκάλους και με πολλά φροντιστήρια, εξακολουθούν να είναι τουγουλάκια όμορφα. Γιατί λείπει ο Θεός από τη μέση. Δεν προσεύχεται το παιδί, δεν έμαθε να προσεύχεται το παιδί. Πού να του δώσει σοφία και σύνεση να τα καταλάβει αυτά τα πράγματα;
