Summary
The Church presents Thomas and the Myrrh-bearing Women as witnesses to Christ’s Resurrection, which is inseparable from faith in His divinity and humanity. Repentance and confession form a single sacrament for sins after baptism; genuine repentance requires a decisive change of life rather than repeated confession without amendment. Families, schools, and churches must form children not merely as educated individuals but as Christians grounded in prayer, faith, and responsibility before God.

In these days, we are still speaking about the Resurrection of Jesus, and of course we shall continue to do so until the Ascension. After the Resurrection, the Church called upon eyewitnesses to tell us whether Christ had truly risen. Among others, she regarded Thomas as such a witness. He was the first to doubt the Resurrection of our Christ, and Christ gave him the opportunity to see for himself, condescending to his weakness and using Thomas’s own words, so that Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God!” Thus he became a witness both for the prosecution and for the defense of all those who, whether they wish to believe or not, speak about the Resurrection of Christ. The other day, the Church also called upon those women who went and saw the tomb empty, with the burial cloths and linen wrappings lying there. They even spoke with angels and heard that the One they sought was not there. The angels showed them the place where the Lord had lain. The Resurrection of Jesus completes the revelation of His divinity, for both are necessary for man’s salvation. Yes, the Resurrection of Jesus is necessary, but so is
the divinity of Jesus. If either one of these two truths is denied, there is no salvation for man. Christ was indeed man, but He was also God. Christ died as man, but He rose as God. These two truths must be like cornerstones within us. We cannot deny either the humanity of Jesus or His divinity. His entire life and all His works confirm the truth of this. Saint Proclus, a disciple of the divine John Chrysostom and Bishop of Constantinople,
expresses this meaning in a few words: “I behold the miracles and proclaim the divinity; I see the sufferings and do not deny the humanity.” I see Him open tombs, fashion eyes with a little spittle, cast out demons, walk upon the sea, and know from afar that Lazarus has died. These, he says, are signs of divinity. But I also see Him weep and shed tears; I see Him eat, ask questions, sleep, and suffer anguish. These are signs of humanity. This Jesus, then—the God-Man—rose from the dead. Yet we must also attend to the matter of His divinity. His divinity is demonstrated by His works. And so, in what follows, the Church,
like a wise spiritual mother educating her children, sets before us a series of events that demonstrate the divinity of Jesus. Just as she has spoken about His Resurrection, so, beginning next Sunday, through the Gospel readings she presents, she will speak about the divinity of Jesus. Next Sunday, our Christ encounters a man who has been paralyzed for thirty-eight years, and He heals him with a single word. A mere man cannot do that. On the Sunday after that, He encounters a woman paralyzed in soul: Photini the Samaritan Woman, now Saint Photini. “You have had five husbands,” He tells her, “and the man you now have is not your husband.” This is paralysis of the soul. Yet in a single encounter she too is shaken to the depths. She had come for water, but even forgot her water jar.
Further on, the Church will present Christ to us as Creator. No one was there when He fashioned man, and people therefore dispute that He is the Creator. In their heedlessness, they are willing to consider themselves descendants of an ape, yet not creatures fashioned by God. And so God, in His providence, arranged matters so that when He came into the world, there would be a man blind from birth. Christ could then perform an act of creation, fashioning for him the most delicate part of the human body—an eye—with a little spittle and earth, and thereby reveal His identity: He is the Creator. Thus, by His works, our Christ is shown to be God as well. Tonight, then, I would like to speak about the first miracle He performed that demonstrates His divinity,
and about the further moral teaching contained within this Sunday’s Gospel reading. During these days, John has the floor. He gave us the passages concerning the Resurrection, Thomas’s doubt about the Resurrection, and so forth. The other day Mark appeared and told us about the Myrrh-bearing Women, and now John once again takes the stage. If you wish to find for yourselves the passages on which, by the grace of God, we shall speak tonight, look in John, chapter 5, beginning with verse 1. It says: “After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to
Jerusalem.” The Fathers and interpreters disagree about precisely which feast this was. Some say it was Passover; others say it was Pentecost. In any case, it was one or the other. This is not our concern. Our salvation does not depend upon knowing whether it was Passover rather than Pentecost, or Pentecost rather than Passover.
Or, if it was neither Passover nor Pentecost, it may have been the Feast of Tabernacles, for example. The Jews had three principal great feasts, besides the other lesser ones. But that is not the point. “Now there is in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda.” And so Christ came to this pool known as the Sheep Pool, called Bethesda in Hebrew.
“Having five porticoes.” I do not know whether you are aware of this, but those of you who have visited Jerusalem may have had the opportunity to see remains of that Sheep Pool even today. It was an entire, extensive complex. It is under the care of the Latins. One enters through their property to see all the ruins that remain today, as well as water still present in that pool. Just as water remains at Siloam, so it remains there too. At that time, when it was evidently a standing structure, it also had various entrances or gates through which people entered. Thus, it says that it had five porticoes—what we might call five covered arches. “In these lay a great multitude of the sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting”
“for the moving of the water.” Something strange took place there. At an unexpected time, an angel would descend and stir the water, and whoever managed to enter first was made well and healed of whatever disease afflicted him. It was not like certain waters today—for example, the springs at Ypati—which are said to heal this or that particular complaint, burns, or something else. No. This spring received its healing power through the angel who descended and stirred the water. “For an angel went down at certain times into the pool and stirred the water.” That is why the people waited there, as we have said. Diseases of every kind that medicine could not cure compelled people to go there, and they remained confined there. Evidently, among them was the man whom Christ heals in today’s account. Here, then, we see water, an angel, spirit, and a man suffering from some disease. This is a type, a prefiguration, of the baptismal pool of today, where water is likewise used together with the grace of the Holy Spirit, cleansing man from every sin—from ancestral sin
and from any deliberate personal sins, if the person comes to Baptism at a mature age. An infant who is baptized bears only the consequence of ancestral sin and has committed no deliberate personal sins. That pool, then, was a type; by extension, its fulfillment is our Baptism today, which cleanses man regardless of either the kind or the number of his sins. This is why there is no need—as someone once asked me—to confess before being baptized. I say that Baptism does not include confession. Confession, which Saint Gregory of Nyssa calls a second baptism, concerns sins committed after Baptism. For this reason, the Fathers call it a grace given in addition
to the grace of Baptism: it is another grace. For if this loving and compassionate Mystery—the Mystery of metanoia, repentance, and confession, as the Fathers also call it—had not been given, no one would be saved, because sin extends into word, deed, and thought. Those who justify themselves, or who perform good deeds to offset the evil they have done, act very wrongly. They are mistaken. Their good deeds are lost, while the evil remains. There is no balancing of accounts. Evil deeds—that is, sins in general—are forgiven; they are not paid off. They are not paid off; they are forgiven. That is why, when our Christ rose from the dead, the first Mystery He instituted that very evening, while Thomas was absent, was
the Mystery of metanoia, repentance, and confession. You will remember that after twice saying to them, “Peace be with you,” He said: “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” He instituted this loving and compassionate Mystery. This is what He brought forth from the tomb: the forgiveness of sins. He presented it as a fundamental matter, a fundamental requirement. Yet today, unfortunately, as you yourselves know, many do not make use of this Mystery, while some who do use it do so incompletely, making use of only one part. The Mystery is not confession alone, nor is it repentance alone. It is repentance and confession together.
Unfortunately, we have many people who have confessed but have never repented. They confess on Great Wednesday so that they may receive Holy Communion on Great Thursday, only to do the same things again the following day. Then they return for confession once more at the Dormition Fast and at Christmas.
These people confess, but they do not repent. We also have others who repent: “I know I should not do this; yes, I understand it and my conscience troubles me,” and so forth. But they do not confess it, and the mere acknowledgment benefits them in no way. They are like people who recognize that they have an illness but do not go to the doctor, take medicine, or consent to surgery; consequently, they will die of the illness. Few, then, both repent and confess. Of that vast, anonymous crowd who received Holy Communion at Pascha the other day, eighty percent belonged to one of these two categories. Among those who received, you could count on your fingers the ones who were truly in repentance and walking the straight path. The rest are amphibious creatures. For a few minutes they climbed out of the mire.
The next day—splash!—they were back in it again. And here they are once more. So, if you wish to test what I am telling you, should you ever go to confession, take a small tape recorder with you and record your confession. When you go again, record the second one as well. You will see that there is no difference. You said approximately the same things the second time as you did the first, because you uprooted nothing; you merely pruned the growth, and it sprang up again. You confessed in order to receive Holy Communion; you did not confess in order to reach Paradise and struggle spiritually. To repent means to turn around one hundred and eighty degrees. Lord, I cannot continue along a parallel course to the one I followed before, with the same friendships, the same conditions, and the same surroundings. That is not repentance. Repentance means breaking away.
You must do what Peter did: “And he went out and wept bitterly.” You must leave the place and the people with whom you sinned more readily, or among whom you lived your life far from Christ. So long as you have not changed your surroundings and the people around you, you have not advanced a millimeter along Christ’s path, even if you have received Holy Communion a hundred times a year.
As I was saying, that pool was a type of Baptism—of this saving Baptism administered today among the Orthodox. The author continues: “Now a certain man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.” A man had been sick there for thirty-eight years. “When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time,” He went directly to him, knowing that he had been there many years, and said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” How old are You, my Christ? “I am thirty-three.” In other words, this man had been coming there for five years before Christ was even born.
That is how long he had been there. He was there before Christ was born.
It appears that the man had no relatives, no friends—no one at all. He himself says so further on. When Christ asked whether he wished to be made well, he answered, “I have no man.” Imagine how many people passed through that place over those thirty-eight years, were healed, and went home. They had arrived after him, but his illness was such that, as he himself says, whenever he realized that the water had been stirred, he tried to move toward it; yet he was so completely paralyzed that he could not reach it. Another man’s affliction was only in his hand, or only in his eye, or only in his head. He would make two quick leaps and get there first. This man was always left behind. But I would like to take you there in your imagination, so that you may understand the mentality of the world—a mentality that is repeated even today.
Of course, people came there a year after he did. “Well, how are you doing? Have you been here long?” “One year.” “A whole year? How is that?” “I have no one to help me.” “Once I get well, what does that matter to me? I will look after myself.” So that fellow pushed ahead, was healed, and left. Then two years passed. “Have you been here long?” “Two years. I have no one.” Three years, five years, eight years, ten years, twenty years, thirty years, thirty-five years. How many passed him by? How many must have made him promises, only to say, “He managed perfectly well for another year,” and then leave? You have read Joseph’s plea after he interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer and baker. He said to the cupbearer, “When you are restored and once again place the cup in Pharaoh’s hand, remember that I too am here unjustly.” But he forgot Joseph.
He forgot him. While he was in prison, he needed Joseph. He wanted his comfort, his interpretation, and all the rest. Joseph had told him what would happen and that he would return to his former position. Yet he remembered nothing. That is the way human beings treat one another. While we are all frying in the same pan, we make promises. Once we ourselves are taken out of the pan, we forget the other person whom we know is still frying in it. Few people place themselves at the service of another. Do you know what it means to be a Christian, my dear friends? It means placing myself at the service of the other person. Anyone who does not place himself, his wallet, his whole person, his thoughts, and his entire being at the service of another is not
even truly human, according to Saint Anthony the Great. Open the Philokalia, volume one, chapter one, and read what you can learn from that holy elder Anthony about who deserves to be called a human being. We hardly have such people at all. Today we have cheapened among ourselves the very qualities that distinguish a human being. The same situations repeat themselves; the same patterns appear in every age. Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever—but sadly, so is the wickedness of the world. Few people, while eating, wonder whether the other person has anything to eat. A man warms himself by his radiator, but does he wonder whether the other person even has a small stove? I travel in my car, but does he even have a donkey to carry him? I have meat in my pot today, but does he have so much as vegetables? Few people think this way. For thirty-eight years, he faced the world’s heart of stone.
It is a double-edged sword. He could have become bitter and refused to look another human being in the face, because he had seen all the cruelty, wickedness, and indifference of the world. That place was a university in itself. He had seen every kind of character and could by then have become savage toward everyone. But he could also say, “You brought this upon yourself, sir. I am responsible. Other people owe me nothing. I lived in such a way that I became paralyzed at twenty-five.” He must have been around sixty or sixty-five when Christ healed him. How do we know? From what Christ told him: “Take care; sin no more, lest something worse happen to you.” You have now spent thirty-eight years paralyzed here, but that is nothing. Take care that
you do not become paralyzed in the life beyond, where there is no healing after the grave. Take care. For someone to have become paralyzed so young, as some of our own wayward young people have suffered other terrible consequences—young women picked up from the streets, barely clothed—he must have been eighteen, twenty-two, or twenty-five. Add thirty-eight years, and that makes him sixty to sixty-three years old. For all those years he lay there by the gutter, in the damp. His skin must have become soft as cotton; the man must have been covered with mildew. He had seen all the wickedness of humanity, and yet it worked for his good. For if a person chooses, he can grow savage; if he chooses, he can grow gentle. Could not poor Lazarus have become savage and cursed the rich man, when he saw him above, feasting and enjoying himself, while Lazarus did not have so much as ointment
or a bandage, and the dogs were his only nurses? Could he not have said, “May a demon seize you”? He said no such thing. He exercised patient endurance and forbearance, and through them he gained Paradise. The other man, with all his money, purchased Hell; he died and was buried. People so often ask, “Why this illness? Why does no one help? Why does the government ministry not do something? What about the charitable funds? What about the organizations?” and so on. Helping can be a double-edged sword. At times God has taken hold of this lamb by the leg. Do not rush in and release it. Ask God whether you should give in that situation. Ask God whether you should remain there. Discernment is needed, because that person is undergoing his trial. Of course, many times you will receive the command to give. Then you must deprive yourself in order to give,
to run to him, stand by him, and remain there at his side—not at a distance, speaking by telephone, but beside him. Yes, every case is different. In this man’s case, however, his suffering benefited him. Listen to the answer he gave when Christ asked whether he wanted to be healed. Humanly speaking, at first sight the question sounds almost like mockery. A man has been wasting away there for so many years, and now a young man of about thirty comes and asks him, “Sir, do you want to be made well?” “Oh, go away!” That would have been my answer. And if I did not say it, I would give him such a look that he would be forced to leave ten times faster. Saying “Go away” would drive him off once, but one look from me would do it ten times over. Yet this man said nothing of the kind. He finds the question strange and cannot imagine what it means. Perhaps, he thought, this man might be a doctor.
Christ appeared there simply as an ordinary man. Now pay attention and see what those years had brought forth in the paralytic. The sick man answered Him: “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” And that is why I have remained here all these years. Clearly, the man had been deeply cultivated within; the trial had benefited him. What I mean is that some people are benefited by tribulations. If they are attentive, tribulations set them right and prepare them more fully than a life without tribulation would. If we have not brought the tribulation upon ourselves and it comes to us, should we ask Christ to take it away? Let us ask only for the strength to bear it. “My Christ, do not take away the cross You have sent me, because if You sent it, that means I need it.
Give me shoulders strong enough to bear it. Help me, just as You Yourself were helped while You were here, through Simon of Cyrene, to carry Your Cross. Help me in the same way, but do not take my cross away.” Sadly, many people ask to be delivered from their trial, and once outside the temptation, instead of becoming better, they become worse. Many times God does not remove the cross, and if He does sometimes remove it, the result may be harmful. If we try to force God into taking away our cross, its removal may harm us.
So we see again that this man had been cultivated within. His suffering benefited him; he became truly human and saw things as they really were. “I have no man.” Those words are not accidental. Let us not pass over them carelessly: “I have no man.” Today, too, if you look around, humanity is paralyzed because it has no true human being to help it. Above all, the true human being is missing from the home. And even if such a person is present in the home, he may be absent from the school. And even if he is present in the home and at school, often he is missing from the Church as well—and the result is devastation. Yet the first and fundamental cell of society is the family, the home.
At a school here in Athens, a teacher gave the children an essay assignment at Christmas: they were to write about how they had spent Christmas. Not one essay contained a single word about attending church at Christmas, and the teacher was astonished. “Children, did you not go to church? Why did you not write a few words about it? So many beautiful things happen on Christmas night. What did you see there? What did you hear?” No one answered. She began asking them one by one whether they had gone to church, and not one of them had. “Children, why did you not go to church?” “Mama did not take us. Papa did not go. So we did not go to church.”
The teacher began giving them some instruction about this, and eventually they reached the days of Christ’s Passion. “Children, these are the days of Christ’s Passion. Many things are said and heard in the Church, and many beautiful things can be learned there. Ask your mothers to take you. Then, when we meet again after Pascha, we will write an essay about how we spent Holy Week, the holidays, and Pascha, including our experience of the Church.” So the children went home and said, “Mama, our teacher told us this and that.” As though acting on a common signal, thirty-five of the forty-five mothers came to demand an explanation: “Why is she stirring up our children like this?
This is our concern. We sent them to school to learn their letters.” But Christ is the Alpha and the Omega—“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” He says—and they wanted Him left outside their education. The teacher was reprimanded. She answered as she ought: “I am obliged to teach your children on the basis of our Greek Orthodox Christian heritage. What you choose to do beyond that is your own affair.” They threatened to take the matter to the Ministry. I do not know how the case developed. I mention it only as a small incident that I encountered in recent days. You may feed the child, but the child needs a true human being beside him.
The child needs a mother who does not see him as an object, but as an eternal soul. He needs a mother, a true human being beside him, who remembers that one day she will be called to account for the child entrusted to her. What will you make of him? Merely teaching him his letters is nothing. Do you want to form a true human being? If you teach him only his letters, you have accomplished nothing. You must also form him as a Christian, so that he may become a good human being. Simply making him an educated person is a double-edged sword: he may become the terror of the neighborhood and a predator in the workplace and in society, until one person or another cries, “A curse upon the mother who bore you, for taking the father of my children from me! A curse upon the mother who bore you, for taking the mother of my children from me!”
Is that what a mother should make of her child? What kind of human being would that be? Because of those she brings into the world, society ought to say what was said of Christ: “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts at which You nursed.” Yet today people say, “A curse upon the mother who bore you.” Why does this happen? Because there is no true human being in the home. Why has society become a jungle? Because there is no true human being in the home. That is the reason. I do not mean someone who merely has the outward appearance of a human being, but someone with the inward qualities: the fear of God, a person who stands in awe, thinks, weighs things carefully, and takes responsibility. That is what is missing today. Our people are good, but they are uncatechized. Little children are like clean, unwritten sheets of paper. Their mother must write the finest words upon them in letters of gold, so that no one else can erase them and write something different. Yet today, from infancy, you hand your child over to the world without having written
anything upon him yourself. Who, then, will write upon him? Someone certainly will—and afterward, how will you erase what they have written? “I have no man,” he says. That is why Christ came to him on His own. He Himself became man in order to help humanity. These events are not accidental, nor are these words accidental. They have their place and their meaning in every circumstance. If I was not a Christian from my swaddling clothes, it was because only three true human beings were found around me to nourish my soul.
Then God arranged matters providentially. After I had lived thirty years in dissipation, the fullness of time came, and God Himself sent a man who came and saved me. Other people were not to blame. My parents departed and left me when I was only this small, and there were no true human beings around me. Those around me were corrupt, immoral, and unbelieving. That is how things are for the most part. A person must therefore learn to pray from childhood and beseech Christ to remain with him. Do you remember our last talk about the road to Emmaus? When Christ and the two disciples traveling to Emmaus reached the crossroads, and Christ “made as though He would go farther,” what did they say to Him? “Abide with us.” Always remember that crossroads. From childhood onward, a person stands at crossroads concerning his education and profession, whether he will marry, enter the clergy or the monastic life, or remain in the world.
At every such crossroads, say to Christ: “Remain. Stay here and speak to me. Stand here, wait for me, and guide me.” The time comes to choose a profession. Father wants one thing, mother another, the godfather something else, the cousins and everyone else something different. And in my own head, I want yet another thing. “Abide with us, my Christ, and tell me what to do, what I am suited for, what I can bear, and what gifts I have. Set aside what they want and what I want. Am I to enter Holy Matrimony tomorrow or not? Abide with us, my God. Draw near to me and tell me: should I place my hand there or not? Is this person truly my own side, or not? Is this my shoulder blade, or not? Is he my Adam? Is she my Eve? Is this the right person, or not?” This is why there are shipwrecked lives, why society is a jungle today, and why there is such destruction and decline. There are no true human beings, and people have not learned how to seek Christ.
The same is true at the crossroads of business. The business closes the very next day. Why? Everyone was consulted except Christ. This is the crossroads you are approaching: with whom will you enter into partnership? Where will you risk the fruit of your labor? You may end up in prison; you may commit a crime. “Abide with us, Christ. Come here and tell me what to do.” But people do not know this Man who came into society to help those who have no true human being to guide them. In any case, this paralytic left us a great teaching. Keep it, if you wish. Jesus immediately said to him, “Rise. Since you have no man—and it was for this very reason that I became man—take up your bed and walk.” It was an easy thing to carry, some kind of pallet. What sort of bed could it have been, if it had kept him there for thirty-eight years?
It was no small thing. A strong man cannot easily lift a bed onto his shoulder, yet a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years was to lift his bed onto his shoulder? “And immediately the man was made well, and he took up his bed and walked.” Behold, His works show that He is God. As God, He also knows that there lies a man who has suffered for years and has been abandoned by everyone, and He goes to him at the proper moment. Do not ask Christ to come and remove your cross before that cross has fulfilled its purpose. You put a medicinal plaster on your body, and it stays there; the instructions say to remove it only when its work is finished. At this very moment I have two of them on my back because of the flu I caught at Pascha.
I am waiting for them to fulfill their purpose and come off. They have not yet come off my back. Could Christ not have gone to the paralytic one, two, or three years earlier? Could He not have gone much sooner, or, as God, sent someone else? It was then that the man became spiritually mature; it was then that the illness accomplished its purpose. That was when Christ went to him. Always know that God sees you and watches over you in every situation. And this consoles you: God sees me suffering this; He sees me carrying this cross, being persecuted and insulted. This consoles you, because you know that God sees you and allows it. Therefore, in some way, this must be what is needed. Enlighten me, my God; comfort me and help me. In any case,
there is also the other side of the matter. There are the wicked, those standing outside and watching Jesus. “Now that day was the Sabbath.” You know that the Jews observed then, and still observe today, the rule of touching or doing nothing from sunset on Friday evening until Saturday evening. Not a leaf stirs; in Israel, you cannot even reach anyone by telephone. In any case, “the Jews therefore said to the man who had been healed”—not to the One who healed him, but to the man who had been healed; behold their hypocrisy—“It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” You have no right to carry your bed. But could I ever have had the strength to carry my bed before? Do you not ask me about that? Can you not see me? Do you not know me? Everyone knows who I am.
Everyone knows me. I have been here for thirty-eight years; all of you know me. So why do you come and say this to me now? In any case, he answered them: “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” I did not do it on my own, he says. Forgive me; I did not mean to offend you by breaking your law. But the One who made me well commanded me, and I thought I ought to obey Him. That is how it is: everything is turned around. “Then they asked him, ‘Who is the Man who said to you, “Take up your bed and walk”?’” He did not know Him. How could he have known Him? But unfortunately, they themselves do not have the courage to stand before Christ, challenge Him, and receive His answer. What do they do instead? They go after this poor, powerless man, and now they make him answer as though he were responsible for keeping all the commandments. But the man who had been healed
did not know who He was. Christ had not even remained to say, “Here is my card; if you need me again, or if you do not recover completely, call me.” Christ worked His miracle and departed. He waited for neither thanks nor anything else, and He left deliberately, neither to provoke applause nor to stir up envy. Pay attention to this. There are two sides to it. By leaving, He helps the envious not to fall into envy, and He keeps those who would thank Him from applauding Him. He did something for the glory of God. “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Yet we do nothing unless we know what inscription will be placed on it, whether it will be reported in the press, or whether our name will appear among the benefactors or donors. In any case,
the result is this: “For Jesus had withdrawn, since there was a crowd in that place.” There were many people there; He entered the crowd and departed. Let the miracle speak for itself. And you know, deeds are the finest orator and the finest preacher. When a person’s life is disciplined, upright, honorable, and moral, it speaks for itself. It needs neither witnesses nor defenders of the faith. Christ departed. But “afterward Jesus found him in the temple.” How did you come to be in the temple? If you had gone to the temple earlier, if you had maintained a relationship with the Church, would you have ended up paralyzed? Certainly not, because far from the Church and far from a moral life,
a person falls into paralysis. If all the psychiatric hospitals are full, if old disorders have flared up again, and if this and that calamity has happened, it is because people have no relationship with the Church. So how is this man now found in the Church? He underwent this spiritual cultivation during those thirty-eight years. Through the reason and experience he acquired there, he reached the conclusion that this could not have been an ordinary man; He must be something more. “Let me at least go to the temple and thank God for sending me this Man.” And this was the result: there he met Christ, the Lord of the Temple. I do not know with what feeling you go to Church.
Some think that when they go to church, they may meet the bishop who is visiting that day, the priest, the deacon, the chanters, the sacristans, the parish council members, and some Christians from the parish. That is a fundamental mistake. The first One you will meet when you enter the temple is the Lord of the Temple, Jesus Himself, and then the persons in whose honor the church is dedicated: Saint Nicholas, Saint George, the Most Holy Theotokos, and so forth. But Christ is first. Therefore, if a person possessed this awareness and were filled with this awe—“I am going to Church, and I am going to meet Christ”—perhaps he would often not go as casually as he does. For the divine John Chrysostom says: “Have you entered the temple? First judge yourself worthy.” You have put your foot forward to enter!
Did you first examine yourself and determine that you truly were able to enter the temple? For at the door it is not the parish council member who will look to see whether you are wearing a different suit, tie, or undergarments. It is not he who stands there. The One there is He who will examine you as with an X-ray, “He who searches hearts and minds,” who does not look at the outward appearance but sees what is within. Where were you all week? What did you do? What is your relationship with Christ and the Gospel? How do you think? How many people have you wronged? How do you live—carnally, in a worldly manner, seeking only amusement, and so forth? He is the radiologist from whom you can hide absolutely nothing. And if a person knew that there were rays and radar there
that would reveal his true image, many of us would not go to Church in the manner we do. For the first One we meet in the Church is Christ. Invisible, He is with us, and He sees how each person conducts himself, how he comes, and why he came. Do you remember when the Jews entered the temple and put coins into the treasury? Does the Gospel not say that He watched how they gave? Not merely how much they gave, but how they gave. That is why He praised the widow who offered two small coins: “She put in more than all the others.” The question is not merely how much someone gives, but how he gives it and where he obtained it. Is it truly his? Could it be someone else’s blood or labor, the money of someone else’s children, someone else’s property or rightful due? Where did he obtain it? This is the One whom you meet there. A person must therefore know that when he goes to church, he will meet the...
Lord of the Temple. In any case, it says here that through this entire ordeal the man came to himself and found himself, and the ordeal reconnected him with God. Blessed are the tribulations that bring a person back to Christ. Blessed is mourning; blessed is financial loss, a shipwreck in family life, or a personal disaster. Blessed is cancer, blessed is an earthquake, blessed is war—I do not know what else we might call blessed—if it becomes the means of reconnecting us with Christ and with the Church. In any case, this is the result. Christ approaches him and says, “See”—pay attention, He tells him—“you have been made well. Sin no more, lest something worse happen to you.” “And the man departed and told the Jews”
“that it was Jesus who had made him well.” Only now did he learn this for the first time. To strengthen him in what he had attained through the trial he had endured for so many years, Christ appears to him and counsels him to take heed. Of course, we would say, “What could be worse than being paralyzed for thirty-eight years? What could possibly be worse? Death?” Yes, but what kind of death would it be? If death were annihilation, then by all means, enjoy it. Indeed, if that is how you think, throw away your reason now. There is no reason for you to go on living if death is annihilation. But it is not annihilation. There is life beyond the grave. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning of another life that has no end. And if a person does not succeed in freeing himself from the entanglements of this world and remains spiritually paralyzed for the world to come,
it would have been better for him not to have been born. If a person suffers here for thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred, a thousand, or even millions of years, that suffering still has an end. But “of that Kingdom there shall be no end.” And Christ, who spoke these words, certainly did not make a mistake. Therefore, we too must take heed to our conduct. When Christ shows us patient endurance, waits for us, helps us, and we return to Him, let us not turn back again to the same vomit. Let us not do this, because everything has a limit, even forbearance. You do not know when the longsuffering of God will finally overflow. God waits; God is longsuffering. But until when, I do not know. Imagine the longsuffering of God as a cup into which one drop falls every thousand years. How do I know whether...
this final drop of our days, perhaps of this very day, will cause the cup of God’s longsuffering to overflow and bring the intervention of God’s justice? That is what should concern us. In conclusion, Christ is shown by His works to be God, in addition to all the moral teaching that emerges from this entire account. I pray that our Christ may grant us the grace to become true human beings for our fellow men, just as those whom we recognize as true human beings brought us here this evening.

Στα σταυροδρόμια αυτά της ζωής, των επιχειρήσεων: κλείνει την άλλη μέρα. Γιατί; Όλοι ερωτήθησαν, ο Χριστός δεν ερωτήθηκε. Είναι το σταυροδρόμι που πηγαίνεις. Με ποιον συνεταιρίζεσαι; Πού εκθέτεις τον ιδρώτα σου και λοιπά; Θα φτάσεις στη φυλακή, θα κάνεις έγκλημα. «Μεῖνον μεθ’ ἡμῶν, Χριστέ. Έλα εδώ, πες μου τι να κάνω». Αλλά δεν είναι γνωστός αυτός ο άνθρωπος που ήρθε στην κοινωνία να βοηθήσει τους ανθρώπους που δεν έχουν άνθρωπο στο κεφάλι τους. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, ο άνθρωπος αυτός μας άφησε μια μεγάλη διδασκαλία, που, αν θέλετε, κρατήστε την. Ο Ιησούς είπε αμέσως: «Ἔγειρε», του λέει, «εφόσον δεν έχεις άνθρωπο, και γι’ αυτό έγινα άλλωστε εγώ άνθρωπος· ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει». Εύκολο πράγμα είναι. Κανένα ράντζο ήτανε. Τι ήταν αυτό το κρεβάτι, για να τον κρατάει 38 χρόνια εκεί;
