Summary

Christ is questioned by a ruler and elsewhere by a lawyer who seem to corner him, but he remains the teacher and they the students, exposing how we have misframed the manner of our salvation. The Kingdom of Heaven is nowhere preached as a wage earned by good deeds but as a gift that is inherited, and heirs must produce titles of kinship. Works are luggage and Christ is the ticket: the Publican, the prodigal, and the thief entered without works, while the Pharisee and the elder brother had works without Christ, and the greatest sin — failing to love God — is the one no one ever confesses.

There have been times when the Lord was met and, supposedly — at least in people's opinion — put in a difficult position, as you will hear now. Both by a lawyer and by this ruler, it looks as though he is being cornered by the question. But in the one case and in the other, the Lord remained the teacher and the others remained in the position of the student. And this is an opportunity for us

that we ought to pay attention to, because we have set up the matter of our salvation crookedly — the matter, that is, of the manner of our salvation. Almost all of us rest on our works. That is where we place our bet: on what we do in secret and what we do in the open. But the teaching of Jesus does not begin there. It is not ergosoteria, salvation by works; it is Christosoteria, salvation by Christ. Works do not save a person; Christ saves a person — even though works are indeed taken seriously into account.

A person's works do not create his entrance into Paradise; they create his place in Paradise. They determine where he will live in the Paradise he enters — but to enter Paradise at all, he needs Christ. Someone who merely performs works has no entrance into Paradise. Picture Paradise as an apartment building, with different apartments belonging to different owners. These various owners do not have identical apartments. Some have a studio, some have a two-room flat, a three-room flat,

some have four rooms; some have theirs fitted out and furnished, others have them bare inside. But in order to go in, in order to live in them, whether for many hours or for few, they all need one and the same key to get in. If they do not have the key, they cannot go in, even if their apartments are the most luxurious of all. This is simply an illustration I am reminding you of, so that no one is deceived into saying, you know, I do this, I build, I go without so that I can give to others, and so on. He may well go without — but you have to have the key to get inside. And the key is Christ.

You do not enter by your works; you enter through Christ, from within his Church. This is not taught. For the most part this is not preached. What gets preached are the works of man — and most of them cannot even stand up in the justice of God. Because they are made with such a mind and out of such rotten material that they cannot bear anything at all. It is like putting up a building with crumbling materials, and the moment you step inside it collapses on you and kills you. Some are built out of money taken unjustly, some out of money stolen, some this way, some that, some the other. Some do it to be seen, some so that their name will be written in gold letters

on the donors' plaque, or on the benefactors' plaque. Or so that the daily press will write them up. Or so that they will see the light of publicity, so that people will see their supposed works. And these things cannot even bear weight in the building of Christ. These people have not created the conditions for their own salvation. That is why the matter is not a matter of ergosoteria, salvation by works, but a work of Christosoteria: Christ saves. And when you speak to them about Christ, you will see that they have no relationship with Christ at all, no organic relationship with Christ. Nowhere did Christ preach that the Kingdom of Heaven is a matter of good works. All right — it is not an evil thing, of course it is not, but neither is a good work by itself the thing. Let no one

say, then, that we should stop doing good works. You will go on doing good works — but you will not bet on them, you will not rest in the idea that because you do good you have a claim on the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of Heaven, the Kingdom of Heaven is not a wage earned by merit. The Kingdom of Heaven is a gift that is given by God, through Christ, to the believer. The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited — inherited. That is how Christ preached it. And this dialogue of the ruler today, the passage I am going to open up for you, God willing, is his conversation with Christ. Good Teacher, what shall I do

to inherit eternal life? In other words, this man had grasped it well; he had heard first-hand that Christ was not preaching good works. He did not even speak about works first; he spoke first about faith — that a kinship must be created so that a person can be saved. Man wants to return to heaven, to his homeland. And what is man's homeland? The one he lives in — Greece, Germany, Turkey, Russia, America, Egypt? These are not the permanent homelands of human beings. The permanent homeland of human beings is Paradise. Grant me the homeland of my desire, making me once again a citizen of Paradise. Is that not exactly what it says, in the most concise way,

in the service that is chanted over our head when they bury us? Is that not our petition — that he make us citizens again of the homeland we long for? Man was not made for the earth; he was made for Paradise, together with God. But he lost that blessedness and that companionship with God because of the first sin. And because we are the descendants of those people, we continue to have no relationship with God. And Christ came to unite us and to bring us back into kinship with God. What will he say on the day of Judgment? What does it say, how does it go there? Come, you blessed of my Father, and inherit the kingdom prepared for you — inherit it.

The prepared kingdom, prepared for you from the foundation of the world. He is speaking about a kingdom and he is speaking about an inheritance. He also accepts the good works — he mentions them just after: For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in, and so on. But first comes the inheritance: you must show your titles, that you are a relative, that you are an heir. Because it is no good saying, I believe in God and all the rest, while I have no works of love toward my fellow man. For the commandments are two: love toward God and love toward the neighbour. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. You cannot say, I love God, but as for my neighbour, let him fend for himself. You cannot love God — how can you, when you do not love your neighbour, whom you see? And God, whom you do not see, how do you love him?

It is impossible for a person who really loves God not to love his neighbour, and it is impossible — and it is not right — for a person who loves his neighbour not to love God as well, since these two commandments depend on each other and we may not under any circumstances separate them. So they say that this has to go, this has to be got out of the way — because if a person had got this out of the way, he would be in church every day. The Church would not be considered something superfluous, as it tends to be regarded, above all by young people today. Young people have thrown the Church out completely today; they have cut themselves off from the Church, they have no need of the Church. And as a result they have been caught, taken captive from the very start by the devil.

Outside the Church a person is under Satan's hand. If people inside the Church often end up serving the devil, how much more those who are outside the Church. Imagine what that is like. So this, little by little, at least for as many years as we have to live, we ourselves must already come to believe and to live differently — and so must those we are able to influence, by our position and by circumstance: my child, my relative, my neighbour, someone I can reach, my colleague. Let the other side be discussed properly as well, because they play us a one-sided game, and people do not know it, and they say to you, that is the Church — they go for many years, they go on Sunday, they go at Pascha, and so on, but not that it is required, and not that

I will not gain anything serious

or lose anything serious if I do not go to church. People do not know that if they do not have the Church as their mother, they do not have Christ as their brother either, nor God as their Father, and they cannot say the Our Father. And even if they do go to church, if they do not commune in the church they go to, again they have no relationship with God at all. Why is it called Holy Communion? Communication — divine communication. I communicate with God through the Holy Chalice. I do not commune, so I do not communicate, and consequently I have no relationship. So this — the Kingdom of God is inherited — is the most basic issue of all. God does not make a person an egotist, believing that I did this, I fed you, I put shoes on you, I got you this job, I, I, I.

That three-letter word has to go first of all — I. And whatever you do, you will say that you are an unprofitable servant, because you have only done what you were obliged to do. The tree that is planted is not planted in order to be applauded. It is planted so as to produce the fruit it has been sent to produce. If it does not produce, they will cut it down and throw it into the fire, no discussion; and if it does produce, they will not applaud it, because it is doing exactly what it is obliged to do. So if I help someone, as far as I am able, or go without in order to help someone, and it is not out of my surplus but out of my own need — I am obliged to do it. I do not expect a thank you, I do not expect a well done, I expect nothing at all. I have an obligation to do it.

Otherwise we should not even be calling ourselves human. And people who are not Christians fail to live as human beings should. And Christians who bear no likeness to Christ likewise fail to live as human beings should. We simply have a distinction from the animals and so on — that we are human, that we look a certain way, and so forth. But these properties do not present us

or define us as what we should be. We are human beings and our works are subhuman. Many times we try to become supermen and we find ourselves subhuman. Often we insult certain people and call them animals, call them brutes, and things like that. Wrongly — that is no insult at all. The animal, the brute, never sinks as low as man sinks.

Man goes further down than that. So from the words our Christ was preaching back then, things are not the way we think. And the people who heard him first-hand, as we would say, really had taken it in that the Kingdom of Heaven is inherited. As we have said on other occasions, it is relatives who inherit, by presenting the titles of their kinship. Suppose a man dies abroad. Do we not often see in the newspapers, the heirs of so-and-so are sought? Well, he had a business — did he not have people there? He had clerks, he had Pharisees among them, he had hired hands, he had servants — and none of them gets anything. Not so much as a needle from any of it, and you see

that here, when various people are informed, the relatives, at the lawyers' offices, they bring out their papers and one says, I am this man's brother, I am this man's child, I am a first cousin, since the closer family circle is not there. And with those titles I turn up a millionaire overnight. I find myself inheriting what that man had over there. This is exactly what God asks for. And those who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven are those of the close family circle, the relatives by blood and by spirit. Are people who do not commune relatives of Christ? Their blood is a different blood! How can they be relatives of Christ? Christ is a king's son.

And the blood of Christ the King — you do not receive it in Communion. So how are you, a common, mortal, earthen man, going to inherit a kingdom? When kings die, do ordinary people inherit? It is the princes who inherit. That is why Holy Communion is needed — to change a person's blood. The Christian, the one who really believes, knows that he is a king's son. And not a king's son like these little masons we have today. A son of the King of the Kingdom of Heaven, because through Holy Communion his blood is changed within him. That is the purpose of continual Holy Communion, of daily Holy Communion: the changing of the blood. But we, so as not to lose the pleasures of our flesh and not to give up our unlawful beds

…we do not receive Holy Communion. We go for years on end, only at rare seasons of the year, and we deprive even the little children of this contact and communication with God — so they are not king's children either, with a right to the Kingdom, because the Kingdom wants royal children as heirs, it does not want ordinary people. If a person really thought about this, I think they would somehow set about changing themselves. Do what is good, and then leave it aside. You will be paid for it, God will reward you for it. But in order to enter, a person has to have an organic relationship with Christ. He has to become a child of God. It is wrong that people are called children of God — black, white, yellow, red…

…we had no relationship at all with Christ, and someone tells you: children of God. Wrong. Creatures of God, yes; things fashioned by God, yes; children of God, no. Only those who received him, received Christ — to them authority was given to become children of God. Christmas is coming. Why does Christ come into the world, Paul? So that we might receive back the adoption as sons, which we had lost. We were cut off; he threw us out. And Christ comes now to bridge that gap, so that we may become children of God again. So that we might receive back the adoption as sons. Christ came into the world. When the fullness of time came, he sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, so that he might redeem those under the law, so that we might receive back the adoption as sons. And John says, in the first chapter: as many as received…

…him, to them authority was given to become children of God. As many as received him. Those who did not receive him are not children of God; they are creatures of God, things fashioned by God, yes. I am the image of Your ineffable glory — yes. But a child of God he is not. The Our Father does not belong to him, because he does not have Christ as a brother. He did not accept the manner of salvation. And so he is not inside the close family circle. There is no blood kinship with God. That is the reason. And precisely for this reason, if you have noticed, when the faithful receive Holy Communion and the priest or the bishop comes back out with the Holy Chalice…

…once more, and says: Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance. Who is the inheritance? Those who communed, those who came into contact with Christ, the brothers and sisters of Christ. God has one natural child, one child by nature — Christ. But he accepts other children as well, who become brothers and sisters of Christ by grace. Those who receive Christ and are baptised into the name of Christ become the little brothers and sisters of Christ, and by extension children of God. So all those who keep this kinship and remain the little brothers and sisters of Christ — as many of you as were baptised into Christ have put on Christ; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him — those people, all who keep the kinship…

…are, by extension, heirs of the Kingdom of God. Paul says it elsewhere, in Romans: co-heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven with Christ. These are the ones. These are the ones standing in their stalls in church. Then there are those who have had their breakfast and went to pick up the antidoron, the blessed bread handed out after the Liturgy, so as to eat it midweek; those who take the antidoron from the candle stand without coming forward to Holy Communion, waiting for some great feast to come and then going up again unrepentant, unconfessed and with nothing put right, just to commune — those people are not inside the close circle of God. They have nothing to do with the heirs who are going to inherit the Kingdom of God. So from this dialogue with that ruler it emerges that things are not the way we have had them until now, and they stay covered up…

…and a person sleeps peacefully, thinking: you know what I do in secret. I see you in the open, and from that I understand what you do in secret. You may do many good works, and I hope they do you good — but how will you find those works? How will you find them, how will you get inside to find them? You are missing the key, you are missing the entrance. You cannot go on your own. Your works are not able to help you travel to the Kingdom of Heaven. A person's works, as we often say, are their luggage. Whereas Christ, Holy Communion, is the ticket. To travel, a person needs the ticket first, and then the luggage. There have been people with only a ticket, with no luggage at all, who entered the Kingdom of Heaven.

…the Publican has no luggage, he presents no works. He went down justified. Like the younger son, the prodigal — he has no works, he has no luggage, and he entered the Kingdom of Heaven. But people with works, with luggage, and without Christ did not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The prodigal's elder brother did not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The Pharisee, with all those works, did not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Whereas the thief, with a single 'Remember me' on the Cross, entered the Kingdom of Heaven. Why do you not see these things, my friend? We will do the work, and we will be ashamed to put those works on display anywhere. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin. If we do the rest — going to church…

…Holy Confession, continual Holy Communion and so on, love towards our fellow human beings and peace with God — then we have every hope of finding all these things we did as well. Even if all we gave was a glass of water. I am not saying we did anything more. Even if we gave a single glass of water, we will find that too. A cup of cold water, it says: if you give it, you will receive your reward. You will not lose it. But if you stop at nothing more than doing good works — which is what happens with so many people — and nothing beyond that, then Satan is laughing at us and we will find ourselves shut outside. This is what he sets out in his opening move here, on the basis of Christ's teaching. A certain ruler questioned him, it says, saying: Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? And being a ruler, he would presumably have had a certain education, so he would grasp the matter well — but that is not all there is to it.

…and on another occasion it was another lawyer. He put a question to our Christ: in what way is a person saved? And once again he spoke there about how the Kingdom of Heaven is inherited. Good — he said to him. He makes Christ the teacher; he asks him. The ruler questions Christ so that Christ will answer as the pupil. And with two words our Christ overturns the terms and puts him in the place of the pupil, and says to him — Jesus said to him: Why do you call me good? No one is good except God.

…you do not take me for God, and therefore I am not good. You take me for a man. How can you call me good when you do not believe I am God? For me to be good, I must also be God. Either you will believe I am God, and then I am good, or you will stop calling me good, and then I am not God either. Very often we are not careful in our answers, or in our questions. Today, in the middle of the twentieth century, with people who have so much knowledge, so many aids, so many books available — and yet the answers they give are pitiful. They do not help people towards salvation. That man said nothing. One simple remark from Jesus put him out of the running. I was speaking the other day with a gentleman, and he was telling me about something that had happened to him. He says to me: I gave him three answers and torpedoed him. And all three answers were chaff that he handed the man. Not one of the three was correct. And he says: what do you mean? I thought I was speaking doctrinally, like Athanasius the Great…

…that is what your empty head was saying, but you had nothing whatever to do with Athanasius the Great. Many people ask us about things and we do not have the humility to say: I do not know. Talk with a heretic — when you corner him he will say: I do not know. He refuses to speak, or else: I will bring my superior. He will bring the arch-devil, that is, for you to talk to. He does not speak, he stops speaking. All heretics stop speaking and bring in their superiors. We imagine we are obliged to answer. First of all, we have not done the reading; we are illiterate in matters of the faith, that is, of the true faith. In the letter of it: neither why we fast, nor why we pray, nor why we confess, nor why we are baptised, nor why we commune, nor why there is a clergy, nor why it is called Orthodox…

…we know nothing about these things!

…and they reel off nonsense, and others laugh, and they build on it. On the empty answers we give, the heretics build. Then let us go on. The Lord says: You know the commandments, he tells him. Don't you know them? Why are you asking me?

…do not commit adultery, do not kill, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honour your father and your mother. Now the ruler hears this, and he hurries in at once and says to him: All these I have kept from my youth.

He says to him: I have kept these, he says, since I was a little boy.

I will admit it — I have no reason to doubt this man's truthfulness, as though he were supposedly lying. I want to believe he told the truth. And do you know what a hard thing it is to keep those commandments? If we, in the age of grace, do not keep these commandments — if we are guilty on practically all five of them, we churchgoing Orthodox Christians — then I say: my God, how did he keep them without the law, without grace? How did he keep them? He struggled, that is how he kept them. God has never given a commandment that cannot be kept, because then he could not judge anyone justly. We could shout at him: You are unjust, God, you have laid on us a burden too heavy to carry. Can you blame your little child…

…who can only hold a single orange in their hand, when they could not carry the ten kilos you loaded onto them on the way back from the market, and they even fell down and got hurt? How can you blame the child? Everyone who sees it will say: aren't you ashamed, madam? You loaded ten kilos onto a baby, a weight you cannot carry yourself. How is it possible that God would do such a thing, when you and I would not? In proportion to a child's age and strength we give each of our children something; we make a distinction. You will carry this, you are older, so you carry a bit more, you carry more still, and so on. So is God unjust, has he legislated things that cannot be done? This man says: all these I have kept from my youth.

…but let us discuss it, if you would like to join in as well.

We know these commandments. Where do these commandments belong? Do you know where they belong? Listen. There are two basic commandments. The one basic commandment is the first and great commandment. It is the one that says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your understanding, with all your heart, with all your might, with all your strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: your neighbour as yourself. On these two — on these two commandments — the whole law and the prophets hang. On these two commandments; that is, he presents them as the starting point…

…the two great commandments. And there is another parenthesis inside this parenthesis.

Ask people, tell me, what is the great sin in a person? As many heads as there are, that is how many opinions you will get. One will tell you it is murder, another will tell you it is adultery, another will tell you it is blasphemy, another something else. Is that what the Gospel says? Is not the first and great sin the breaking of the first and great commandment? Is that not what reason itself tells us? If the first and great commandment, as Christ says, is "You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul, with all your mind, with all your strength," and so on — if that is the first and great commandment, then is not the breaking of the first and great commandment the first and greatest sin?

It is the first and greatest sin: the breaking of the first and great commandment. Why do you talk to me about murder? Murder belongs under "You shall love the Lord," and "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." Why do you talk to me about adultery? That belongs to the second commandment. Why do you talk to me about theft? That belongs to the second commandment. Which of us has ever confessed to his spiritual father that he does not love God as he ought? No one, ever. He has broken the greatest commandment and committed the greatest sin in the world. Does he take it into account? Does it trouble him at all? Not in the least — it is as if the rain were falling somewhere else. And he is waiting to go to Paradise. In fact you take it very badly that God leaves people here. "Why is he leaving me here now? What am I supposed to do here?" And where do you think you are going? Are your affairs in order for the journey? Settle your accounts first, and then we can talk. Settle your accounts, and then we can talk.

That remark you made — think what pride was inside it, and what ignorance was inside it. "What am I supposed to do here now?" There is a reason you are still sitting here. The greatest sin in the world is committed by the person who does not love God in the way he said, since that person is breaking the greatest commandment. "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not kill," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," "Honour your father and your mother" — these are branches, plants growing from another root: "your neighbour as yourself." They belong to the second commandment, which is also great, just as great as the first, because as much as you love God, so you must love your neighbour. "On these two commandments" — on these two — "hang all the law and the prophets." For Christ himself said it.

"And the second is like unto it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself." "You shall not commit adultery," it says here, the first of them. Adultery happens when you do not love someone. "But surely it is because I love him that I commit adultery with him?" If you loved him you would not do it, because you do not love his soul. And Scripture sets down its law and says: outside are the adulterers, outside are the sorcerers, outside are the fornicators. How can you say that you love him, when you are either failing to help him or actually driving him into Hell? So it simply does not stand. And some people, whom God has protected from committing adultery in the flesh, have themselves become the cause of others committing it.

They did not commit adultery themselves, but they helped others to commit it. They passed on their letters for them, they gave them their telephone, they gave them their room, they gave them money, they covered for them during certain hours when they were away, for one or for the other. They quietly made it easy for them, and they are guilty; they have hung a share of that sin around their necks, and the devil will take it down when the person passes through the tollhouse of adultery. He will say, "Come here, you are written down for this, and this, and this." And such cases have never once been brought to Holy Confession — that "as a schoolgirl, as a schoolboy, from when I was small, I made it easy for people to fall into unchastity. I did nothing myself, but I made it easy." Joseph

sent our Most Holy Theotokos away from the house, because she was with child and he could not believe that she was not with child unlawfully — being a righteous man. He could not keep sin inside the house: fire would fall and burn me. Which of us thinks about this, that when he makes it easy for someone, he himself is sinning? Not that the others are excused, but that he is sinning. And it is a matter over which God will bring him to judgment if there is no metanoia, no repentance and turning back. But is adultery only adultery of the flesh? Is there not also spiritual adultery? Has he not taken this commandment, "You shall not commit adultery," and set it into the law of the Gospel? Did he not say, "It was said to those of old, you shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that if your eye looks with an evil desire, you have already committed adultery in your heart." How many of us, with our eyes,

have desired another man's wife, another woman's husband, someone else's son, someone else's daughter? How many of us do not have such cases, how many of us do not have such situations? What is left? The consent has already happened, the desire has already happened, the inward consent has already happened. What is left? The act. And if the opportunity were given to us and we did the act, we would be guilty of adultery. Who has ever confessed this? Who cleanses himself of these things? And who is not guilty? Who, then, receives Holy Communion worthily? Because we are not only flesh; we are spirit as well. Since my spirit is defiled, and since Christ has already said, "You have committed adultery in your heart," then that is how it is. So if these things are examined, we shall see that we are guilty. "You shall not kill!"

A commandment, a great one. It is a terrible thing to take away another person's life, to deprive someone of something you cannot give back. But murders are of many kinds. Many of us have perhaps never slaughtered so much as a bird, never trodden on so much as an ant — or so we imagine. Yet, as I said earlier, many shares in murder may be found hanging on us. My prayer is for that day of judgment. I was speaking once in Patisia, and I heard a lady at the back say, "A curse on the hour when I listened to her." She said what she had heard: she had heard her mother-in-law, when she was expecting a child, say to her, "We were fools and had children; you should live your own life." And the next day she went

and killed the child, she aborted the child; but I do not have that mother-in-law here now to see the remorse in her. The grandmother had died in the meantime. And it is something she would never have confessed. She would certainly have found it hanging round her neck. She did not draw a knife, she did not draw a gun to kill. But she killed with her mouth. She killed that little child. In fact she committed two murders: she killed the child, which went unbaptized, and she killed the mother, she killed the mother's soul. "I have never harmed a mosquito." You have never harmed a mosquito? Fine. We will discuss it up above, at the examination, whether you have ever harmed a mosquito. Because they write down even our logismoi, our intrusive thoughts, not only our deeds, since a person's sin extends to word, deed and thought. Three of them write, as I have told you before: a person's conscience writes; Satan writes his own papers; and our angel writes too.

And then to wipe them out. How many people, with deliberate planning — mothers, parents — do not kill the life that is there in the seed, throwing it in the bin, or, once it has been conceived, throwing it in the bin afterwards? How many such people are there? Who is not guilty of murders? You did not kill. Agreed. But you killed in an indirect way, in a roundabout way. Because murders are of many kinds. There is bodily murder and there is murder of the soul. What death do you see? Is it always only the one kind? We see the death of the flesh. A shot rings out and a man is laid out on the ground. But the man who is standing upright while his soul has been killed — do we see him? Do we see spiritual death? Do you not hear the words, "This your brother was dead, and is alive again"? The prodigal was dead, because he was living in sin. And

the bishop there, of those churches — was it not the one in Laodicea? — heard, "You have a name that you live, and you are dead." And what did he say to that young man who asked his permission to go and bury his father? Our Lord said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; you follow me." There are living dead men in your village, wearing a necktie, who are dead, and they will bury the father — there are plenty of them close at hand. So there are two kinds of living, two kinds of living: there are the living dead, and there are the truly alive. So then, "You shall not kill" — which of us is clean of it, whether by word or by deed? Let a person think about it, and let him ask Christ to bring it back to his memory. "You shall not bear false witness," it says. I am all right at this point. That is it. Forgive me — "You shall not steal" is the next one, yes. "You shall not steal."

Who is clean of theft? Or who has confessed the theft and put the stolen things right, and given them back? Because it is the one thing a person is never released from. From my wife I can be released when I die, or when she dies; if she dies and rises again, she is not my wife, we have been parted;

she is released from that bond. Or if I die and rise again, she is not my wife. She is released from me, and I from her. But if I have stolen something from someone, or kept back something that belongs to someone, and I die and rise again, it will be hanging round my neck. From this I am not released. I shall pay for it; the justice of God will demand it of me. Who, from his childhood years, has knowingly confessed the sins of his soul that have to do with theft? Because we steal on the scales, we steal on the measure, we steal on the price, we steal with our hands, we steal in a thousand ways. We have stolen fruit, we have stolen sweets, we have stolen books, we have stolen objects, we have stolen tools, we have stolen building plots, we have stolen fields, we have stolen apartments, we have stolen from the state, and we still steal from it with pensions and the rest. How will these things be cleansed, and where shall we come out? Christ did not say, "Do not steal from the poor." Because some people say, "I managed to get myself a pension; I brought along two false witnesses, I produced a few documents. Yes, I draw it; I ought to be drawing less, but I have managed to draw more." But these things are not yours. Will the state grow poor over it? I do not know. Christ said, "Do not steal."

He did not say, steal small things and do not steal big ones.

Saint Panagis Bastias in Argostoli was once going towards the market, and he met an acquaintance of his who was coming along with a paper cone, a bag of fish from the market. "Have you done your shopping?" he says to him. "Well, yes, father, yes — give me your blessing." "Blessed may you be," he says. "Did you buy well? Were they fresh? Let me see." And indeed, he says, they were: "There was some lovely picarel and I bought it." So the man opened the cone for him to see the picarel. But on top there were also three bogue fish. Panagis — Saint Panagis Bastias, as he now is — takes the three bogue and throws them into the sea. And he says to him, "Now these — let them go, since you did not pay for them; let them go." He had bought the picarel.

He gave the fisherman the money, the fisherman goes to give him his change at the stall, and the man grabs three bogue from over the counter, drops them in and closes it up. But the elder took them and threw them into the sea. How many women — and how many of us — have not stolen from the greengrocers? "Where did you take these from, Mrs. Vasiliki, from here?" "Yes, from here" — and she has taken some from the basket next to it as well. Here the tomatoes are ten drachmas, there they were twelve. But she reached over there and put in a few of those as well. The same with the fish, the same with the fruit, the same, the same. Who has ever confessed this? Is that not theft? Whatever you steal — a box of matches, a single sweet, whatever you steal — Satan has got his hand on you. You have stolen. He is not concerned with the size, because if you could steal a ship and not be caught by the prosecutor, you would steal the ship.

Whatever passes through your hands, that is what you did with it. Tomorrow, if more passes through my hands, I will do more. "You shall not steal." So who is guilty, and who is free of it? Who is clean, or who has confessed it? Or who has ever thought of returning, little by little, the things he has stolen, whether from his workplace or from certain people he cheated? "And where am I supposed to find those people now?" Back when you were stealing from them, how did you know them then? Give it to their heirs. "But they have not died; there are no heirs." Then give it to a charitable foundation in their name — not in your own name, in their name, for their sake, since it came from their sweat, and do not make yourself out to be honest while you are unjust. God set you to manage what belonged to another. For all of it you will give account to God. Satan has kept a note of the very smallest things. I do not know if you remember: one evening I was speaking to you about another side of this. And I said the following.

One evening, just across from us here, at the Holy Monastery of Petraki, on the eve of the feast of the Archangels, an all-night vigil was held. There were many people, and among them was a woman who was possessed. The possessed woman was telling each person what he had done. She had exposed them all. Over in one corner sits an older unmarried woman, a serious churchgoing woman. She was taking the antidoron, the blessed bread given out after the Liturgy, from her hand. At one moment the possessed woman turns and says, "Why are you pulling on that rope?" She was pulling her prayer rope. "I have three things on you." The woman paid no attention at all, because it did not trouble her. She had made her Holy Confession, she had put things right. "Ah, it is you I am speaking to — I have three things on you." Again she paid no attention.

Someone nudges her and says, "You know, she is saying it about you." "About me?" "Yes." So she turns round: "Is it me you are speaking to?" "It is you I am speaking to." "I have made my confession. I have sinned," she says, "I say it in front of everyone, but I have confessed. My Lord has forgiven me, I have put things right." "I have three things on you, and here I am not going to say them out loud." Now, however she was pressed, however God arranged it, she goes on to expose her and says: "The surgical spirit you burned — are you not a nurse? The surgical spirit you have burned at the hospital to keep yourself warm — who is going to pay for that? Where did you get it from," she says, "did it come out of your own sweat? How much spirit have you burned, putting it on cotton wool, setting light to it and warming yourself?" The woman was stunned. "And the long-distance telephone call you made and paid for as a local call, and so on and so forth."

"Do you want to hear the third one? I am being pressed, so I will say it: the time you left your cousin in the house with that other person and went off — what happened there? Who is going to pay for these things? I have things on you," it says, "many things that belong to others." Who takes any interest in his immortal soul, in tending it every time? "I have never harmed anything; I have never harmed a mosquito." Yes, you have harmed something. Come up the day after tomorrow and I will tell you where you have. So it says, "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness." We spoke about lying the other day, and we have a whole hour-long talk recorded. Anyone can have it and hear what an innocent lie really amounts to, and what our ordinary everyday lies amount to. The next one is, "Honour your father and your mother." This man said that he always honoured his father and his mother. Most of us have not honoured our parents.

We embittered their lives. Perhaps they were paid back in the same coin, because God is just, since they too embittered their own parents. But we will taste bitterness as well, all of us who did not honour our parents. There is no greater blessing in a house than to have the throne of the grandmother and the grandfather in it. If a house could have both a cradle, a baby's crib, and the throne of grandmother and grandfather, that is heaven itself brought down to earth. That is what it is. God, Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the All-Holy, the Twelve Apostles and the Saints, all of them are in that house. But where there is no cradle for a child, and where the elders are not in the house

that house belongs to the devil, even if it holds all the gold in the world. The devil dances in there; he has his throne there. That is how God has arranged things. And look at what we see today: the nursing homes. We sent him off, says the daughter-in-law, we sent grandfather and grandmother there, they need care, they are better off there. There they will have their doctor, their meals whenever they want them, hot food whenever they want it, and so on. Does grandfather or grandmother need someone to give them something to eat? That is not their need. Their need is for you to come in the evening and say, father, how was your day; for the little grandchild to come near so that grandfather can stroke his hair. He does not want you to give him anything to eat. Give him a dry crust of bread that he can dip in a glass of water. And even if there is not even that, he does not want it. He wants to see the little grandchild, he wants to hear you,

his child, his own flesh and blood. That is what he wants. What will grandfather do with gold? He has eaten his fill, he has lived his life. He wants warmth, he wants love, he wants God, he wants his own people to close his eyes when he dies, he wants to see his own people around him. That is what he wants. God has left the house, because we drove our parents out of the house, and we drove the crying of children out of the house, which is a blessing on a house. The breaking of this commandment is the cancer of the family and the death of the family's soul and of society itself, because parents are not honoured and children are not born. It is the greatest sin in the world, and it remains unconfessed. And woe to those clergy who bless such married couples to receive Holy Communion when they are not bringing children into the world. Apart from certain women who are simply unable to bear children, where the priest may show leniency, in all the other cases they will find these things hanging around their own necks.

They create situations that they should not be creating. And this is today, when they are able to live, not merely to survive, but to live well. Think of all the goods there are in the world today. In the old days there was not even a roof over our heads. In my time there were families with ten children. My father came from a family of ten or twelve children; my wife's father was one of twelve or thirteen. These were enormous families, and we lived on nothing at all: one pair of shoes for feast days and weekdays alike, one pair of trousers for feast days and weekdays alike. And today we cannot manage, today when hands are paid so well, thousands of drachmas a day in wages, and today children cannot be raised. It is a lack of faith. He said he would keep all of this, that fine young man, and even though he kept all of it he had not been saved. His heart was stuck fast, and he did not know this about himself, that these things do not save him. So Christ uncovers him and says to him: you still lack one thing.

You have become attached to your money and you love your money. You must come and follow me. He told him to go and sell all of it and come to him. And that is where we get tangled up. That is where we get tangled up. Everything was going well up to that point. And there the poor man became downcast and went away. He went away, very rich, it says. He went away, he did not follow Christ. He did not listen to him and go and be near him, where he would have learned so much, where so much would have come to pass around him. This is the very passage that Saint Anthony heard as a young man when he went to church, and he said, look what this man did, he did not go; well, I will go and sell what I have, and I will go. And he went and sold it, he settled his sister's affairs, and he became Anthony the Great, the one who put the devil in a bottle and tied him up there where the devil ties us up. And our Christ said then: how hard it is for those who have money to enter the Kingdom of Heaven; it is easier, he says, for a camel to pass through the eye of

a great sacking needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. It is not impossible; it is difficult. Written one way, with an eta, the word means the animal, the camel. And of course it is hard for a camel to pass through. He took that image from the Hebrew way of speaking and said it in that form. Elsewhere the word is written another way, with an iota, and then it does not mean the animal at all: it means a thick ship's cable, a hawser.

ετοιμασμένη βασιλεία, την ητοιμασμένην από καταβολής κόσμου. Ομιλεί περί βασιλείας και ομιλεί περί κληρονομίας. Δέχεται και τα καλά έργα, το αναφέρει παρακάτω. Επείνασα γαρ και εδώκατέ μοι φαγείν, εδίψησα και εποτίσατέ με, ξένος ήμην και συνηγάγετέ με κλπ κλπ. Αλλά πρώτα όμως την κληρονομία, δείξεις τους τίτλους σου ότι είσαι συγγενής, ότι είσαι κληρονόμος. Διότι έναν στήρον, εγώ πιστεύω στο Θεό και λοιπά, αλλά έργα αγάπης δεν έχω προς τον συνάνθρωπό μου. Διότι οι εντολές είναι δύο, αγάπη προς τον Θεό και αγάπη προς τον πλησίον. Εν ταις δυσί ταύταις εντολαίς όλος ο νόμος και οι προφήται κρέμανται. Δεν μπορεί να πεις αγαπώ τον Θεό, αλλά ο πλησίον ας τα βγάλει πέρα. Δεν μπορεί να αγαπάς τον Θεό, πώς τον πλησίον σου δεν αγαπάς που τον βλέπεις; Το Θεό που δεν τον βλέπεις, πώς τον αγαπάς;

και αραδιάζουνε που τα μάρες και γελούνε οι άλλοι και κτίζουνε πάνω σε αυτές. άδειες απαντήσεις που δίδουμε οι αιρετικοί. Πάσπρη πτώση στη συνέχεια του. Λέει ο Κύριος, τας εντολάς οίδας, του λέει. Δεν τα ξέρεις; Τι με ρωτάς εμένα;

ερωτήσεις τους ανθρώπους, πείτε μου ποια είναι η μεγάλη αμαρτία στον άνθρωπο, όσα κεφάλια είναι τόσες γνώμες θα υποθούνε, άλλος θα σου πει είναι ο φόνος, άλλος θα σου πει είναι η μοιχεία, άλλος θα σου πει είναι η βλασφημία, άλλος, Αυτό λέει το Ευαγγέλιο; Δεν είναι πρώτη και μεγάλη αμαρτία η παράβαση της πρώτης και μεγάλης εντολής; Αυτό δεν λέει η λογική; Αν η πρώτη και μεγάλη εντολή που λέγει ο Χριστός είναι το αγαπήσεις Κύριον τον Θεόν σου, εξ όλης της ψυχής σου, της διανοίας σου, της ισχύος σου κλπ, είναι η πρώτη και μεγάλη εντολή, η παράβαση της πρώτης και μεγάλης εντολής αυτή δεν είναι η πρώτη μεγάλη αμαρτία;
