Summary

Saint Paul teaches that Christians raised with Christ through Baptism must seek heavenly things rather than become absorbed in possessions, fashion, self-interest, and bodily concerns. Thinking on heavenly things produces trust in God, endurance in suffering, freedom from anxiety, and detachment from wealth, property, revenge, and worldly approval. The believer who lives faithfully within Christ and the Orthodox Church may face death as a passage into an already-prepared place near the risen Lord.

This evening I would like to take my subject from one of the epistles of the Apostle Paul. Since today we have entered the fast of the Holy Apostles, we will take it specifically from Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians.

It is from the third chapter. I do not know whether you ever read it or whether you will be able to follow. But with the grace of God, I will do all I can to help each person examine himself

and see how closely his life corresponds to what Christ asks of us. For the Apostles, as you know, were moved by the Holy Spirit and wrote what is profitable for man to do and to think. For everyone...

has the right to think and act as he wishes. But he ought to think as he should and act as he should. After giving a series of exhortations and instructions, Paul concludes by saying: “If then you were raised with Christ”—if, he says, you have truly risen and been raised together with Christ. And I do not know whether you know who has been raised in Christ: it is the person who has been baptized. The baptized person has been raised up;

he is now supposed to be standing upright, because Christ has raised him. He had fallen; he was dead; and Christ raised him. If, then, he says, “you were raised with Christ,” if you have risen together with Christ and are standing upright, “seek the things above.” Take care not to consume yourselves, become engrossed, or concern yourselves excessively with earthly matters. Earthly matters, as you know, are all those things connected with the flesh, the world, fashion, self-interest, the ego, and the like. These things do not benefit us. They belong to worldly people, who have not been born again in Christ. Christians regard them as secondary. They make use of them only as much as is necessary to sustain themselves; they do not make them their life’s work. For you know that some people do nothing else from morning until night and from night until morning except occupy themselves with the things I have mentioned: what they will eat, where they will go, what they will wear, how much they will deposit, what they will earn, where they will travel, whom they will meet, and how they will enjoy themselves—all things that are passing away. Such things belong to people who have not risen, who have not been raised with Christ, but remain fallen. They may walk, speak, whistle, sing, and joke, but they are dead.

They have a name that they are alive, but in the eyes of God they are dead. If, then, he says, you acknowledge that you were raised with Christ, lean upon Christ and put your trust in Christ. “Seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Does man know that Christ, as the God-Man, is at the right hand of God? And how can he know this? If he knows it, how can he prove it? If he studies, he should know it; he should have found it in the prayer of the Protomartyr Stephen.

We read in the seventh chapter of the Acts of the Apostles that when the Protomartyr Stephen was about to be stoned, as you know, he asked for the blessing to pray. He knelt and prayed, saying, “I see the heavens opened and the Lord standing at the right hand of the Power”—at the right hand of the Lord. We took this from there and placed it in the Creed, where we say, “at the right hand of the Father.” It is scriptural. We did not invent it ourselves; we received it from Holy Scripture. Christ, then, is there. But in what capacity is He there? What is He doing there? There is another testimony that tells us

what He is doing there, at the right hand of the Father: He intercedes and makes supplication on our behalf. He has also gone there as our forerunner. If I may draw from another epistle of Paul, the Epistle to the Hebrews, the final verse of its sixth chapter speaks of Christ having arrived there. Listen to what it says.

“We who have fled for refuge have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” That is, we have Christ as our Comforter, and we must hold fast to this hope, “which we have as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” Our soul has an anchor to which it can cling, and that anchor is Christ. Where is this anchor today? It has gone “into the inner place behind the veil”; it has entered Heaven, “where Jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf.” He has therefore gone there as our forerunner. We too are destined to go there, to Heaven. The first to go there, having risen and taken His body with Him, is our Christ. The Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother, went there second; she too rose,

took her body, and went to Heaven. But on the basis of Paul’s words, our assurance is in the Lord. “Set your minds on the things above,” he says, where He is. Man’s nous, his spiritual intellect, should be fixed upon the place where the God-Man Christ now sits, and he should say: “My Christ, will I ever be counted worthy to come and sit near You? You conquered and sat at the right hand of Your Father. In Your Apocalypse, through John, You say that those who conquer will be seated beside You. Will I be counted worthy to be somewhere near You?” Paul therefore exhorts man always to keep his nous there,

to set his mind there, to think about and concern himself with what is taking place there—with Christ seated at the right hand of God—and to consider whether he too will be counted worthy one day to go where the First has gone, so that we also may take our places there. For I want you to know that a place exists in Paradise for every person. Just as we have our places here in the Church, so there are places in Paradise. The Church is the antechamber of Paradise. Those who attend Church, who are instructed in the Church, and who live the life of the Church here cannot fail to be transferred to that other Church, the heavenly one, each in his proper place beside

Christ. If that place remains empty forever, it will be because those people did not wish to live in the Church here or to live the Mysteries of the Church. For in the Church souls are prepared, made fruitful, counted worthy, shaped as they should be, and clothed in the wedding garment so that they may stand at the right hand of Christ. These thoughts are profound, yet simple. We have never sat down seriously to study even a few words—if not entire epistles, chapters, or lines, then at least a few words—and to place ourselves face-to-face with them. What position do I take

toward the counsel the Holy Spirit gives us through the chosen vessel, the Apostle Paul? And if I discover that I am doing nothing, that I have done nothing, that I have made no preparation and devote no effort or attention to the things beyond the grave, then from now on I must begin to care about them. For man, as we have said before and as Paul himself says, has no lasting city here. This is not the abiding city; we seek the one that is to come, the one that endures. We will depart and go somewhere. Therefore, if you are living here temporarily in an apartment from which you will be turned out tomorrow, while waiting to move into a permanent home of your own that is now being built or has already been completed, do you take an interest in improving the temporary dwelling?

Do you concern yourself greatly with caring for it and all the rest? No. Your mind is fixed on the moment when you will leave it and go to your own permanent home. This is roughly how man should think about his soul’s dwelling in eternity. Consider an engaged young woman whose bridegroom is abroad and who is waiting at any moment for a summons to go there, celebrate their wedding, and remain with him. Speak to her about taking a three-day cruise here, for example, and even offer to pay her expenses. Speak to her about other things here. She will dismiss you from the outset: “Do not count on me. At any moment I am expecting news from the travel agency telling me to leave. My bags are packed,” and so on.

Although she is here, her nous is there. She sees her bridegroom; she sees him moving about; she sees the wedding and the family. She dreams of and thinks about her life in the place to which she will go. She may never have been there, yet she sees it spiritually. Why? Because that is where the treasure of her soul lies. Something similar should happen with our soul and our Bridegroom, Christ. Sadly, it does not happen; it does not, and death sometimes overtakes us unexpectedly. You see entire families being wiped out every day, and one day we shall find that we have deceived ourselves. Blessed is the person who

clings to this understanding here and sees at every moment that he is a person departing, a person on a journey. Such a person will never find that he has deceived himself. Once, a king mentioned in Holy Scripture was about to die. His name was Hezekiah, and God sent the Prophet Isaiah to give him final notice that he was about to depart. And what did God send Isaiah to tell him to do? “Go and tell him to set his house in order, for he is dying.” Have we set our own house in order in preparation for death?

We have not even made our wills, because we are afraid that making a will means we will die. Then we die unexpectedly and unresolved matters remain behind. Our relatives quarrel over us, and curses, blasphemies, perjury, and court cases follow. And instead of our head being lifted even a little out of Hell, they come and trample upon us, driving us farther down.

This happens because we never set our minds on the things above. We believed that we would always be here and that it was in our own power to put everything in order whenever we wished. Yet we never did. There are people who, even if you gave them a million years’ extension, would still never put things in order. They would keep leaving it until tomorrow, until they grew older. One grandmother was ninety-five years old. As I was speaking with her, she said to me:

“That is all very well, Mr. Panagopoulos,” she told me, “and I do bear these things in mind. When I grow old,” she said, “then I will...” Do you understand? I know that youthfulness creates this attitude, but we have such foolish notions—many such foolish notions. Let us not be deceived. Paul speaks clearly here: “Gentlemen, if you are standing upright with Christ, if by Christ’s help you have been born again and now stand upright, seek the things above. Do not cling to what is down here, or you will become stuck and lose your soul. Seek the place ‘where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.’ Struggle to create the proper conditions so that when you die, you may be able to sit somewhere near the place where Christ dwells. ‘Set your minds on the things above,’” he insists. “Direct your thoughts and your understanding there, ‘not on things on the earth, not on things on the earth.’” Sadly, many people have not grasped this. And do you know how much they suffer and torment themselves? They lose their health, end up in psychiatric hospitals, suffer nervous breakdowns, lose their sleep, develop ulcers, and make themselves physically ill through anxiety, because they have no trust at all in God and do not believe that they will depart this life and live beyond it. Many times they also lie.

They scheme and commit fraud, against individuals, the state, and in many other affairs. Why? Because they have not taken to heart that when they die, all these things will remain here. A person who does not realize that he is a passing bird will become entangled in such things. Man is like the swallow: he comes here to remain for the spring and goes elsewhere to rest during the winter. He will not remain permanently on earth. Woe to him if he were destined to remain permanently on earth, amid so many tears, so much wickedness, fear, envy, sickness, anguish, and toil.

so many thorns in this world. Alas, could there be a more miserable life? What gives people the courage to endure the evil and wickedness of this world is their hope that another world exists beyond this one. If a person did not have the hope that one day he would find rest, he would have to take his own life. Why, as soon as he was able, he would pull the trigger.

At five years old he would pull the trigger and blow his brains out. He would have to do it from that age. But what consoles him and enables him to endure all these things is the knowledge that something lies beyond the grave. That is what comforts him. Even if they tear me to pieces, even if tuberculosis consumes my whole body and leaves nothing but nerves and veins, even if cancer devours me entirely, it will consume my body, but it cannot consume my soul. I will give my soul where I choose. This consoles a person, gives him courage, and enables him to endure what he suffers here. Indeed, many people often wonder, “How did I ever make it through?” And how much more you will make it through! If someone had told you thirty years ago, “You will suffer this, and this, and this, and this,” you might have gone mad then; and yet you endured it all. These things pass little by little, and with God’s help, those who are faithful hold fast to Christ and make their way through the storm of this world. But not everyone sets his mind on the things above; not everyone thinks about heavenly things. That is why we have turned our life here into a little jungle, and we have become little beasts.

If we thought about that other life, things would be rather different. So Paul is trying to loosen our attachment to this world. We are going to die, brother. Are we to remain here forever, along with all this endless wickedness? Let us leave it behind, with God’s blessing. But we do not think this way. We keep an account of everything and seek revenge. This is not beautiful, it is not good, and God does not desire it. How many such cases there are! Paul says, “Set your minds not on earthly things, but on the things above.” The earth and the works in it will pass away. As you know, a great struggle is waged against a person’s conscience and soul simply to change one pronoun: to turn “yours” into “mine.” If only what belongs to you could become mine, whether lawfully or unlawfully.

What belongs to your brother becomes yours; what belongs to your neighbor becomes yours. These things are not good. If people gave thought to this, they would not be so wicked. There would not be so many lawsuits. The courthouse steps would still be untouched, but instead they have been worn away. If you go to the courts, you will find that the marble has had to be replaced many times, worn down by the constant footsteps of so-called Orthodox Christians who have gnawed away at the Gospel over temporary earthly matters. Someone says, “I do not trouble anyone, but I do not want anyone troubling me either.” And what if someone does trouble you? “If you trouble me, woe to you!” And you call yourself a Christian? You are not.

I want you not to harm anyone; but even when others harm you, you must still refrain from harming them. Then you are a Christian. If you do not harm others when they leave you alone, but you harm them when they harm you, you are no Christian at all. You are still a little beast; you bite. I want you to take the place of the Samaritan. You must not take the robber’s place, consuming what belongs to another—to your weak brother, your neighbor, the widow, the orphan—or stealing the laborer’s wages. Nor should you take the Levite’s place: he took nothing, but neither did he give anything to the man who had fallen among thieves. I want you in the place of the Good Samaritan: what is yours is his as well. Here are the denarii; here are oil and wine; here is my animal;

here is my own back to carry you; and here is my promise to pay whatever more is needed. This is the kind of person I want you to be. Are you such a person? If not, then go and become one. The commandment is, “Go and do likewise.” If you do nothing of the sort, you have not taken a single step in Christianity. You are not fit to sit at the right hand of the Lord, and you will not sit there. To sit there, you must conquer wickedness, injustice, and all such things found in the world. For, as He says in the Apocalypse, “The one who conquers, I will grant to sit with Me”—if he conquers—“just as I also sat at the right hand of the Father, because I conquered.” Many times, in such circumstances, we may even have to shed our blood in order to save our soul. But we do not think of things this way. We see things as though we belonged here,

as though everything were meant for this life. Let us therefore set our minds on the things above. All these things will remain here. Wicked deeds will remain here; plots of land will remain here; bank deposits will remain here; buildings and apartments will remain here. Let us therefore make sure that nothing we have comes from injustice, falsehood, or fraud. Why? Because woe to us if, when we depart from this world, these unlawful things are found hanging around our necks. As I often tell you, there is no absolute “mine,” “yours,” or “his.” Is even the clothing on my back truly mine? I found these things here, and here they will remain. Once, when I was going down to speak at Saint Artemios, I was walking along Philolaou Street. On the right—perhaps the building has now been demolished—there was a plaque on a building which read, “Today mine, tomorrow yours, never anyone’s.” Is this not the very same truth?

I found the same thing at a monastery in the desert of the Jordan, at Chozeba. A monk had written outside: “O my cell, today mine, tomorrow another’s, never anyone’s.” It is as though the cell itself were saying, “You will live here for a time; we inhabitants come and go.” If a person reflects in this way, he will always consider what spiritual condition he must be in so that he may be found near Christ, where Christ is, as Paul says, at the right hand of God. Do you understand what kind of garment you must wear when you appear there? If you were going somewhere the Prime Minister would be present, how would you go? Would you

put on your trousers with one leg pulled up high, throw on your jacket or cardigan carelessly—as women sometimes drape their cardigans backward and drag them along as they go in to venerate the Most Holy Theotokos—and enter like that? Is that how we will go? How will we go? You will put on what is proper before entering. They will not even let you approach the Prime Minister’s residence unless you are suitably dressed. How, then, will you go up there? Every day during the Paschal season we say, “I behold Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter.” So a special garment is required. Does that mean an English suit, double-breasted and so forth? No. The garment of the soul must be put in order. And who puts it in order, and where? The Orthodox Church puts it in order through the Mysteries, through metanoia (repentance), confession, and Holy Communion. There the garments worn by human souls are made ready, and those souls are sent onward to the Kingdom of Heaven, where, clothed in radiant garments, they sit at the right hand of Christ,

as Paul says here. He then says something else that we must understand: “Set your minds on the things above, not on earthly things. For you have died.” You are dead to the concerns of the earth, the flesh, the world, fashion, and the ego. You are dead. “For you have died”—if indeed you have died. We are still alive; we are still little beasts. Not one of us has died. Like wild animals, we stand ready to bite one another. “For you have died, and your life”—our soul, our very being—“your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

What is he saying now? Do you understand? “Your life”—that is, my soul—is within Christ, hidden there: I am in Christ, and Christ is in God. In other words, if I am faithful, Paul presents me as already being in Heaven with Christ: God is there, Christ is beside Him, and the faithful person is within Christ.

Do you understand? From this very day, the faithful person is in Heaven and needs nothing more. There remains only a small event called death. What does that mean? It is like a mother hen pecking the egg so that it cracks open, the chick comes out, the shell remains below, and the little bird flies away.

That is how it is. From this very day, his place is secured. Do you not sometimes go to a spa, if nowhere else? Do you not send money or telephone ahead to have a place and a room reserved, and then set out with confidence? Have you never traveled after securing not only your outward journey but also a seat for your return, so that you travel with confidence, knowing everything is arranged? You will find a room there; you will find the bed made; a car will be waiting below to collect you; everything will be ready. Why? Because you took care of it from here. You prepared from here, paid from here, and made the arrangements from here. In the same way, the faithful person makes arrangements for the journey of his soul.

The agency is called the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church issues these tickets; from here it secures places there, where the faithful will be expected. This must become firmly established in a person’s nous, his spiritual intellect. “And it is hidden,” Paul says. If you have truly died to the world and are indifferent to what the world says—whether it rages against you, calls you Jesuits, fools, backward, hysterical, mad, and so forth—if you have died to the world, then surely you are hidden with Christ in God. What does Paul say elsewhere? “The world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

He places a cross between himself and the world. He says, “The world placed me upon the cross and put me to death, and I died to the world. And I crucified the world, and found peace.” Let the world say whatever it wants. The world is like a dog barking at us, like a dog barking at us. Do not answer it, and do not throw stones at it. If you throw stones, it will follow you for five miles. If you throw no stones, but leave it there and pay it no attention, it will bark at you two or three times, turn back toward home, and you will continue on your way. That is the world. Let it say whatever it wants. Pay no attention to the world. But we, because we do not believe in Christ, wait for the world to give us its approval. We do not care what Christ will say, but what the world will say. There—you see?—is the secret. People today fear men rather than God. They fear the world and desire the world’s approval.

They do not fear God. They can tell the Most Holy Theotokos to leave the house because the dressmaker has come to make masculine clothes for the women, and so they put the Most Holy Theotokos outside. They do not care what she will say; they care what the world will say. For if a girl or a lady does not dress that way today, she will be considered backward. She fears that judgment and craves the world’s approval. And why does she crave the world’s approval? Because she is a feather in the wind, a rooster’s feather; she has no weight of her own and expects to acquire importance from wearing men’s trousers. There is nothing in her head, nothing else for which people might respect her, take off their hats to her, and kiss her hand; so she expects her outward, worldly appearance to give her worth. Because she fears the world, she possesses no other substance or dignity. That is precisely the reason. If she had true dignity, she would keep her distance from all this.

We are so hollow, so empty. Every corrupt person comes along and invents some new hairstyle and calls it fashion. So today you see a woman wearing her hair one way, tomorrow another way; one day it looks like a cauliflower, another day like a cabbage, and so forth. Cockroaches even breed inside these hairstyles; some women have been poisoned and died. With heads like that, why should cockroaches not breed in them?

Everyone with his own fashion! How many millions—billions—have these people made from blue jeans and the like? Just think! If you buy a new pair of jeans, it costs three hundred drachmas. If it is worn out, you pay eight hundred. Has anyone ever worn it? “What, you are going to give me this?” And then you sit down and deliberately fray it and ruin the bottoms before wearing it. This is sheer madness. No asylum is needed to certify it.

Nothing else is required. It needs no label; it is its own unmistakable label. How can such a person have any relationship with God? He lives according to the world, is stirred by the world, fears the world, and cares about the world: what people will say, what the newspapers will write, what his male and female friends said, what was said about him last night, how this or that appeared, and so forth. That is where the damage is done. These people are still alive to the world; they have not died. Someone once put it beautifully in a play on words: “Whoever dies before he dies will not die when he dies. And whoever does not die before he dies will die when he dies.” Now try to interpret that.

Paul says, “You have died.” The world no longer moves you; you are dead to it and remain unmoved. For a dead man is moved neither by the flesh, nor by money, nor by fashion, nor by anyone’s foolishness—by nothing at all. He continues on his way as though he hears nothing; he simply follows his path. He is dead to everything. The person who remains alive to these things has not yet died. Therefore, whoever dies to the world before undergoing bodily death for the final journey will not die when bodily death comes; he will live beyond the grave. But whoever does not die that first death before his bodily death will truly die and be buried like the Rich Man when death comes. This is the great wisdom to which we pay no attention. Paul has proclaimed it from that time until now: “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

Can the soul, the life, of a worldly person be in Christ? “But he goes to Church.” He goes to Church, but that same evening he is in a woman’s embrace. He goes to Church, but that evening he is also at the dance. He goes to Church, but he also plays cards. He goes to Church, but he also goes to Bebix. He goes there, but he also kills children. He does one thing and then the other. You cannot take Christ and carry Him wherever you please. Christ will not go. Grace is a queen. She cannot be ordered about, and she does not follow you. You must follow her; she does not follow you. From this very day, then, the faithful person is already there, with his place secured. All that remains is the little event I told you about: the shell must crack—that is, the cage must open, and the bird must fly away to its appointed place.

The Kingdom of Heaven, where the places are prepared. But to reach the Kingdom of Heaven, a person must begin laboring here and be properly prepared within the Church of Christ. For it is the Orthodox Church of Christ that receives the rough, unworked human being. We take stone or marble from Mount Penteli and then carve it, as a sculptor such as Chalepas would do. In exactly the same way, the human soul needs to be carved. It must be shaped with the chisel, and this shaping takes place within the Orthodox Church. There a person truly receives the form of Christ,

the nature of Christ. Above all, through Holy Communion his nature is changed: he becomes Christ-bearing and God-bearing, because he becomes one in blood and one in body with Christ. His whole being shines, and he becomes able to stand at the right hand of the Lord, where, as Saint Paul says here, Christ sits at the right hand of the Father. But if he does not make use of what the Church provides—if he goes to Church but does not receive the Mysteries of the Church worthily and properly, so as to bring himself into such a state—then he cannot stand there without blemish or wrinkle. For that is how he must be: without blemish, stain, or wrinkle.

Not only are large patches unacceptable; not even a wrinkle is permitted. Imagine a bride going to be crowned in marriage, wearing her long white train, but with her white wedding dress covered in little spots. It may have no great stains, but perhaps five hundred tiny flies have settled on it and left their calling cards. What sort of wedding garment would that be? How could she enter and stand even before a human being, much less before God? Yet we look only at the gross sins, and we often say, “At least I have not done what that woman has done.”

How does that excuse you? Does another person’s fault cover your own? Are you serious? Suppose you and I are both in debt. I owe ten million, while you owe five hundred thousand. Are you acquitted in court because you owe five hundred thousand while I owe ten million? I will answer for ten million, and you will answer for five hundred thousand. You are not acquitted. Your argument is absurd. “You know, Panagopoulos owes more.” Panagopoulos will have to give a greater account. You will hang by your own foot, and Panagopoulos will hang by his. There is no excuse whatsoever. Using another person’s faults to cover your own is like washing yourself with mud. You take someone else’s mud and try to wash off your own. That is absurd. Mud cannot wash you clean. There is no excuse.

We must understand that, since we have been baptized, we are destined for the Kingdom of Heaven and that, from this very day, our names are enrolled in the Book of Life, as is said so clearly concerning the Judgment. Our nous, our spiritual mind, must always be fixed there, and we must not allow anything to draw us down toward the earth. It is true that there is a law at work in us: we are born bent over. Our heart is deeply corrupted. The earth pulls us downward because we are fleshly, earthly creatures made from dust. The earth and the flesh pull us down. Ninety-eight percent of those in Hell are there because of their flesh. They did not succeed in overcoming it. These things draw us; self-interest draws us,

and then everything else follows. If, then, we realize that we are called to struggle against these things, we must take up that struggle so that one day we may reach the destination appointed for each of us. Everyone must consider this. A young woman who is truly honorable and virtuous, and is betrothed to someone, cannot yield to just anyone else’s proposal. In exactly the same way, the human soul, betrothed to Christ from the day of Baptism, cannot yield to the schemes, caresses, and smiles of the devil and this world. If it does, it becomes an adulteress. That is why Christ quite rightly called this corrupt and sinful generation adulterous. He called it adulterous because it flirts with the devil.

The soul was made for God, yet it performs the works of Satan. Therefore, it is an adulteress. Anyone who abandons a lawful husband or wife is an adulterer or adulteress. That is what is happening here. “Your life,” Saint Paul says, “is hidden with Christ in God.” When Christ appears at His Second Coming, our life will also appear. Christ is our life. The blood is the life of the body, but Christ is our life. Our blood sustains our natural life; Christ, the Giver of Life, sustains our spiritual life. This is why His side is called life-giving; why the Holy Chalice is called the Cup of Life; why the artos, the blessed bread, is called the Bread of Life; and why the Tomb is called

the Life-giving Tomb, just as the Cross is life-giving and His side is life-giving. So when Christ, our life—the life of our soul—appears, Saint Paul says, “then you also will appear with Him in glory.” Then we too will appear in glory together with Christ. Truly, we have never reflected on that moment. We have never asked in prayer for this thought to occupy our hearts. For as sinful people living in ignorance, we cannot understand any of these things. For us, it is utter darkness. But if we ask Christ, “My Christ, I beg You, I read these words...

I am so small; help me too to receive a foretaste.” When a cat darts about, meowing and tumbling over itself, it is because its sense of smell tells it that fish heads or fish are nearby. It smells that fish are there, and you see it turning somersaults. We do not have that foretaste. Yet a person ought to have it—to taste the Kingdom of Heaven beforehand. Once he has tasted the Kingdom of Heaven, all the other things that this world calls great and glorious, applauds, rewards, and crowns will seem like refuse to him. Refuse! But a person has never asked Christ to give him the special glasses needed to distinguish between what is temporary and what is lasting, between what is beneficial and what is not. That is precisely why he becomes preoccupied with kernels of corn like a rooster and kicks the pearls behind him. If you wish, throw a handful of pearls before a rooster, and then throw him a handful of worms or kernels of corn. You will see the rooster kick the pearls aside and busy himself with the worms and corn. That is what we are like. That is what we are like.

Ask persistently in your prayer: “My God, where am I destined to go? What am I, after all?” Job once asked the same thing, though you read such passages and they seem new to you. When I bring them up, you act as though they had fallen out of the sky. Do you know what Job says? “My God, what am I, that You pursue me so closely and never leave me alone? What am I, after all?” Has anyone ever asked what he is, so that he might learn what he truly is and how much his soul is worth, since Christ takes such an interest in it? A person who does not know what a pearl is may pick it up and throw it away. But when a money changer or jeweler sees it, he will suddenly stop and stare, looking for some way to snatch it away and take it for himself.

He may buy it from you for far less than it is worth when he sees that you do not understand what you possess. We know nothing about what our soul is, and that is precisely why we take no interest in it. Many of us even live as though we had no soul at all. The proof is that we do not say even one “Lord have mercy” during the day. Even when Sunday comes and we go to Church, we mechanically make the sign of the Cross and light a candle without saying, “Lord have mercy. My God, forgive me. My God, illumine me. My God, take care of my troubles,” and so on. If we have some illness, some cancer, or something else beyond the reach of medical science, then perhaps we may say something and plead with God—not for the soul, however, but for the body and the flesh. We have not properly understood what is at stake. Saint Paul is saying here that the Christian is

already with Christ in Heaven, because Christ is there as the head. Is Christ not the head? And of what is He the head? Of His Church. Who are the members? His faithful. If the head is there while the feet and the members are on earth, then the faithful are also there with Him. Our souls are already with Christ. “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” We are only assigned here temporarily; organically, we belong to Heaven. Have you never heard someone asked, “How did you end up here?” and answer, “I am temporarily assigned to this department; officially, I belong to such-and-such ministry”? Whatever it may mean to be temporarily assigned somewhere, that is your own situation.

This must become a living conviction in each of us, and we must labor exactly as Saint Paul says here. We must labor in precisely this way. And now, if you will permit me, I shall continue.

“Therefore put to death your members.” If you accept, then, that this is how matters stand—that we are ready to be with Christ—then “put to death your members which are on the earth,” the members that are at work down here. And what do our members produce? “Fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.” Take care, then, to live as though you were not living for this world. Does Saint Paul not say this elsewhere, in his Epistle to the Corinthians?

He says to you who are married—and I am not speaking only to the unmarried—you who are married should have your wife as though you did not have her. And you, wife, should have your husband as though you did not have him. Since you have a lawful wife or husband, you will live within the bounds of your spiritual struggle and, in difficult moments, make proper use of Holy Matrimony so that Satan does not gain mastery over you. You must always remember that this is given to protect you from an actual fall. Many people have not understood these matters in this way. Fornication, he says, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and so on—none of these should be found among you. God gave Holy Matrimony and virginity.

Human beings added fornication, adultery, masturbation, and relations between men. God gave two lawful paths, while Satan added another four unlawful ones. Those who remain virgins until Holy Matrimony can be counted on one hand; and those who lawfully marry after remaining virgins and chaste until their wedding can likewise be counted on one hand. The rest are fornicators, adulterers, masturbators, and so forth. What are such people doing? Are they laboring to ascend to Heaven? No, they are wholly concerned with this world and the flesh. They see nothing beyond it. Once, some people from a village went and accused their priest before the bishop.

The priest had twelve children. The men who spent their time talking in the coffeehouse went to the bishop and said, “Your Grace, do you know what sort of priest you have given us? He does nothing else. He has twelve children! Just imagine what goes on. What sort of Divine Liturgy can such a man possibly serve?” The bishop, who did not understand such matters, summoned the priest to answer the accusation. The priest came, and the bishop said, “Father, charges have been brought against you.” “For what, Your Grace?” he asked. “They say you are an intemperate man.” “And how did my parishioners discover that?” he asked. “From the fact that you have twelve children. They say you occupy yourself with nothing else.” The priest replied, “Do you know that I have been married for twelve years?” “Yes,” said the bishop. “I come together with my wife once a year, and I have twelve children.”

That silenced both the bishop and the others. Do we understand these things? Have we ever considered the animals? Have you ever seen an animal do anything beyond its natural purpose, as we do? Never. Have you ever seen a pregnant animal seek a mate? Have you ever seen such a thing? Only human beings, who behave like beasts, do these things. That is why Saint Paul cries out here: “Put them to death, if you wish to ascend to Heaven, and do not be deceived.” That is how it is. And he concludes this list with “covetousness, which is idolatry.” That is another matter. Many people have burdened their consciences because of money—and not for what is necessary.

Not because they are starving in the street—no. They want to add more apartments, shops, bank deposits, securities, gold sovereigns, dollars, and so on. May all these things remain far from us, because, as you understand, they lead to destruction.

προσκολλάται εδώ και τα βλέπει πάντοτε και ανά πάσαν στιγμή ότι είναι ο άνθρωπος που φεύγει, ο άνθρωπος που ταξιδεύει. Εκείνος ο άνθρωπος δεν θα βρεθεί ποτέ γελασμένος. Επρόκειτο κάποτε να πεθάνει ένας βασιλιάς που λέγεται μέσα στη Γραφή, Εζεκίας το όνομά του, και έστειλε ο Θεός τον προφήτη Ησαΐα να τον ειδοποιήσει τελειωτικά ότι πλέον θα φύγει. Και τι τον έστειλε να κάνει; Πήγαινε, δηλαδή, πες του να ετοιμάσει τα του οίκου του· αποθνήσκει. Εμείς έχουμε ετοιμάσει τα του οίκου μας, προκειμένου να αποθάνουμε;

είμαι για εδώ, είμαι για εκεί. Να φρονούμε, λοιπόν, εκείνα. Αυτά θα μείνουν εδώ. Οι κακίες θα μείνουν εδώ, τα οικόπεδα θα μείνουν εδώ, οι καταθέσεις θα μείνουν εδώ, τα κτίρια, τα διαμερίσματα θα μείνουν εδώ. Ας φροντίσουμε, λοιπόν, όχι με αδικία τίποτα, όχι με ψευτιά τίποτα, όχι με κομπίνα τίποτα. Γιατί; Διότι αλίμονό μας εάν αυτά βρεθούν κρεμασμένα στον λαιμό μας, παράνομα, όταν φεύγουμε του κόσμου τούτου. Δεν είναι, λοιπόν, δικά μας, όπως σας λέω πολλές φορές, τα δικά μου, τα δικά σου, τα δικά του. Αυτό που είναι στην πλάτη μου είναι; Εδώ τα βρήκα και εδώ θα μείνουνε. Μα, όταν περνούσα κάτω εκεί και μιλούσα στον Άγιο Αρτέμιο, περνούσα από την οδόν Φιλολάου πεζή. Δεξιά από εκεί, ίσως το έχουν κατεδαφίσει τώρα το κτίριο αυτό, υπήρχε μια πλάκα η οποία έγραφε σε ένα κτίριο: «Σήμερον εμού, αύριον σου, ουδέποτε τινός». Αυτό δεν είναι το ίδιο;

Είμαστε τόσο κούφιοι, τόσο κενοί. Έρχεται ο κάθε διεφθαρμένος και βγάζει μόδα, λέει, στο κεφάλι. Και βλέπεις τη γυναίκα σήμερα έτσι το κεφάλι, αύριο έτσι το κεφάλι, την άλλη κουνουπίδι, την άλλη λάχανο κλπ. Και γεννάνε και κατσαρίδες μέσα, και άλλες δηλητηριάστηκαν και πέθαναν. Κι έτσι τα κεφάλια που είναι, γιατί να μην γεννήσουν οι κατσαρίδες;

Νεκρόσατε ούν τα μέγιμον Λοιπόν, αν παραδέχεστε ότι έχουν έτσι τα πράγματα, είμαστε συν Χριστώ έτοιμοι και... «Νεκρώσατε οὖν τὰ μέλη ὑμῶν τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς», τα οποία δουλεύουν εδώ κάτω. Τι δουλεύουν τα μέλη ημών; «Πορνείαν, ἀκαθαρσίαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, καὶ τὴν πλεονεξίαν, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρία, δι’ ἃ ἔρχεται ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας». Φρόντισε λοιπόν να ζεις σαν να μη ζεις. Δεν λέει σε ένα άλλο μέρος, Κορινθίους;
