Summary
Christ begins His public preaching with the same essential summons as John the Baptist: repent, because the Kingdom of Heaven is near. James and John likewise leave their boat and their father Zebedee, illustrating that Christ’s call addresses each person’s freedom and cannot be forced even by another person’s prayers. The lecture concludes by urging renewed reverence for the Orthodox Church, its clergy, its sacraments, and its prayers for both the living and the departed.

Tonight’s subject concerns the way our Christ, when He began His public ministry, called His Apostles. As you know, when He formed His first Church down by the Jordan, His Apostles later went out and preached. Certain events are mentioned, but we are not shown exactly how and when He called the Apostles, or how it all began. The Evangelist Matthew, who is called upon to tell us how our Christ acted, says the following in the fourth chapter, from verse 18 onward.
By way of introduction: “From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’” I do not know whether you have noticed how much importance our Christ placed—and how much His Church still places—on metanoia, on repentance. It is the good news, yet it is something lacking among us here. John, who was sent before Christ, came with the same proclamation on his lips: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” And our Christ, who came after him, said the very same thing: “Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.’”
Do You not know anything else? Are You simply repeating what Your disciple said? As the Teacher, have You nothing more to tell us? It is like what John the Theologian used to say: “My little children, love one another.” “Teacher, do you not tell us that every day? Is there nothing else new? Nothing else new?” “If you put this into practice, you will have no need of anything new. And do not seek anything else so long as you have not put this into practice.” But people usually do not want to stand firm and struggle in what is right. They want to move on and become holy in some other way of their own. Yet there is only one way, only one path: the path of metanoia, of repentance. This is the way spoken of, in conclusion, in the
funeral service: “I too have found”—I too have found—“through metanoia, the path by which I may return to Paradise.” If a person does not find the path of metanoia—for he sins in word, deed, and thought, drinks in lawlessness like water, and not a day or even a moment passes without his sinning—then, if he does not make use of what is called metanoia, sadly, nothing else he may do has the same force, the same acceptance, or the same standing in the eyes of God. In our popular speech, and in our own simple theology, we often say, “The bowed head is not cut off.” That is, when a person asks forgiveness and humbles himself,
when he admits that, being human, he has done wrong, that head is not cut off. A human being no longer has the heart to take revenge—how much less would God do so? Metanoia disarms God. When a person repents, so to speak, the sword of God’s justice falls from God’s hands. But we do not repent. And because a person sins every day, he must repent every day. Saint Arsenius, a great Father and a great Saint—who, I believe, had even raised someone from the dead—always offered a short prayer to God: “Lord, grant us more time, that I may make a beginning of metanoia.”
He was ninety-four or ninety-five years old and had lived all his years in metanoia. If ever his eye, his hand, his mouth, his anger, or anything else led him astray, he would hasten at once to repent. Yet he still asked for more time for metanoia, so that he might repent, because he fell again. Now think of us. Some people have not been to Holy Confession since they were little children. Others have not been since their grandmother used to take them to Church, or since school, or their military service. You understand the state such people are in. In any case, Christ has left this as a key in the hands of every person.
It is a double-sided key; it has two faces. On one side is written “metanoia,” and on the other, “refusal to repent.” On one side is written “Paradise,” and on the other, “Hell.” If a person makes use of metanoia, he opens the door of Paradise. If he persists in refusing to repent, he opens the door of Hell. The choice lies in his own hands. Those who repent create the conditions for salvation. Those who neither repent nor go to Holy Confession create the conditions for Hell. These things are in their own hands. In any case, whenever we fall, we hold the key by which we can deal with our fall. It depends on us; it no longer depends on God.
I have given you the means to...
be free and released from your bonds. You fall, and you rise. You fall again, and you rise again. You fall once more, and once more you rise. This is the struggle: I fall and I get back up. No human being can remain standing at all times; he is only human. As I said earlier, it may be his eye, his hand, his ear, his anger, the desires of his flesh, or his own interests. A person will fall, but since he has the right to rise again, he must not be afraid. Satan first causes a person to disobey and fall; then, once he has made him fall, he drives him to despair. He goes and tells him, “You cannot be saved now. After all you have done, do you expect God to forgive you every day? What do you take God for?” Satan even pretends to take God’s side, claiming that God has been offended. He is a master craftsman and wants to keep you down. No! To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic.
You are human, but to remain down is satanic, because then you make Satan and sin stronger than Christ. Yet Christ is always stronger. This, broadly speaking, is what He taught. This was the spirit of our Christ’s preaching. The Evangelist continues: “And walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea”—they were casting their nets into the sea.
“For they were fishermen”—fishing was the occupation of these two brothers—“and He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” Until now you have been fishers of fish. Come with Me, and I will make use of you to catch people. Indeed, it is a kind of fishing when you have the ability to convey God’s truths to another person and draw him out of Satan’s dark sea into God’s blue sea. This too is an art that every person can practice through the grace of God. This does not belong only to those who are sent—the Apostles of Christ, the theologians, and those called by God, as we were saying. Every person, every Christian, if he wishes, can say something, help someone, reach someone in time, and bring someone out of darkness into light. Things would not be so terrible today
if Christians did their work properly, as other people do theirs. Others use every possible means to lead people astray and carry them from light into darkness. But the people of light, the Christians, do not struggle as much, in word and deed, to bring people from darkness into light. Every one of us should care for others in some way—with a word, a book, a recording, a prayer, or two tears. In some way, we should help the other person come as well; we should help draw that person into the net of salvation.
People are caught by sin in many different ways. The young are caught by sin, and even older people are caught when they are not watchful. But we must draw these people out from there. Here, then, He compares preaching to...
fishing. Just as they had fished irrational creatures from the sea—fish—He would now have them catch not irrational creatures, but rational human beings. In any case, “immediately they left their nets and followed Him.” You know how difficult this is; you can see it today even in yourselves.
Today the words of the Gospel, the preachers, and the Church do not tell us to leave our homes. They do not tell us to leave our wives, our children, or our work. We may keep all these things, but at the same time we must also care for our souls. Heaven help us if they told us, “Leave everything and come here!” Then we would even curse them for it. But here...
did Christ promise them anything? You know how the Jehovah’s Witnesses say, “You will earn more. Why worry? Your problem is solved. Do you have no home? You will have a home. No car? You will have a car. No job? You will have a job.” They promise money and happiness in this world; they entice a person, and he goes off with them and becomes a supposed missionary. Christ said nothing of the kind. He promised them nothing. He did not promise them, for example, a pension—a full pension, as we might say—or a comfortable life here. He promised no such things. He simply said, “Come with Me.” And without stopping to ask, “Who are You? What is Your program? What work do You do? What do You preach? What are You saying? Let us see whether we agree,” they left everything and followed Him.
Christ possesses such radiance that He immediately gives a person certainty, down to the deepest recesses of his soul, that He is the truth. A person of good will understands that he is in no danger with the One who is speaking, so he leaves everything and follows. Peter is later shown to have a wife and a home. He may also have had children, for later it says that Peter’s mother-in-law “lay sick with a fever.” Our Christ went into the house and healed her. Peter was married and had responsibilities. He could not simply abandon his household. He might have said, “Let me go and discuss this with my wife, so that we can reconsider and see
where I am going. Will I return home? Will I come home late? How will they be supported? This little occupation of mine puts bread on my family’s table, if You please. How am I to deal with that?” Nothing—there was no discussion at all about what would happen between that evening and the next morning. What I am describing to you is reasonable; these are reasonable arguments, and yet they were not raised. The Samaritan woman had an equally reasonable argument. She went to draw water at midday because she had none. But when she met Christ and spoke with Him there at the edge of the well in Samaria, she left her water jar behind. She forgot the jar and went off to become a missionary in her village. Reason, however, says, “Take the water home so that your husband can drink, so that you can cook the food, water your chickens, and meet whatever other needs you have. Then, when you find an opportunity, go out and say, ‘I met such-and-such a person.’” That is what reason says. That is how it ought to be done. You leave your water jar there? That is madness! And yet Christianity is madness.
Christ is the first madman—the first madman. If you read Mark 3:21, you will find that they called Him mad. “He is beside Himself,” it says; He has gone mad. They sent word to His mother to go and take hold of Him, seize Him, and bring Him home bound, because He had gone mad. When they saw Him working miracles, when they saw a young man who had never attended school preaching—a young man who had grown up among them, and so on—they regarded it as madness. Christianity, then, is madness, my beloved, but it is saving madness, joyful madness—madness. And yet those who are mad call Christianity madness. Today, above all, we have reached the age that Saint Anthony the Great prophetically foretold: an age would come when the world would go mad, when the whole world would be insane,
and if anyone were not insane—if someone had escaped the madness—the others would tell him, “You are mad.” The mad would tell the sane person that he was mad. This is where we are today. If you try to do what is right, make the sign of the Cross properly, fast properly, welcome however many children God gives you, conduct your work with the Cross in your hand, dress modestly, live honestly and morally, and refuse to do what the world and the devil want, you are labeled mad. They say that such a person is finished and cannot live among other people. In any case, these men abandoned everything: “Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.” Let us go! They left the boat without even arranging to give it away, as some people say, or leaving a message: “Tell the wife, the mother-in-law, and the children that we have gone this way.” Nothing at all. They simply left everything where it was.
They had the inner assurance that God provides for everything. It is no great matter for God to take care of your household and your work; and God does take care of them when you take care of the things of God. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” “I,” He says, “will take care of everything else—all the expenses, the rent, the food, the medicines, the homes, everything. I will take care of it.” Of course, we have never had dealings with God, so we do not know how He acts, and that is precisely why we do not trust Him. Those who have had dealings with God know how He acts; only they can answer. I remember, when I was writing a book entitled Avoiding the Begetting of Children Is a Mortal Sin,
I wrote that those who see God at work every day more than anyone else are parents of large families. I met a church caretaker’s wife who had twelve children. She supported and raised them in a single underground room, fifteen steps below street level. At the back there was a tiny kitchen, one meter by one, and a toilet of the same size. Down there those twelve children were raised. One or two of them, I believe, became employees at the magistrate’s court; two others became professionals; one or two became nuns on Hydra; and another two married and settled in Paiania, as I recall. In any case, she met me in the street and said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, I hear you are writing such-and-such a book.” “Yes,” I replied.
“Do not forget,” she told me, “to write that if anyone wants to see God, he should go to the home of a large family, and there he will see God. God is always there; He never leaves. In other homes He comes and goes, but from that home,” she said, “He never departs.” I remember her words to this very moment. Indeed.
In any case, that is what happened with the first two, Peter and his brother. Let us continue. “And going on from there,” as He went farther, “He saw,” it says, “two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.”
Farther on, it says, He saw another boat. They were aboard it, spreading out and mending their nets, because during the night the fish tear them, or they catch on rocks and rip. So they mended them and prepared them to cast again in the evening, which was the suitable time, since fish are not caught in the daylight. They were “mending their nets.” Their elderly father was there as well, helping his sons with the work, “and He called them”—the two brothers, not the father, but James and John. “And immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.” These two had material possessions, and they also had their elderly father. How were they to send the old man home without going with him? Yet the Lord did not turn to the father and say, “My good man, will you let Me take your sons with Me?” Nor did He say, “Do not worry; I will take care of everything.” Nothing of the sort. He addressed them directly. This is a matter for each person individually.
Even prayers do not prevail if the children themselves are unwilling. “You know, your father spoke to Me.” “My father may have spoken to You, but I do not want to,” and consequently, “Do not trouble me”; then the Lord gathers up His things and leaves. So never expect an answer from Christ unless the person himself is also willing. Your prayer and your struggle for your children, or for other people whom you are striving to help come to Christ, must be aimed at helping them become willing, at softening them so that they may choose to respond. For unless they themselves send out the SOS, the rescue boat may be right beside them, but it will not act by itself. There are parents who are powerful in prayer and very close to Christ, yet can do nothing for their children.
To make the point, let me ask this: Could there be anyone more powerful than Christ, who prayed for Peter? And yet Christ prayed, and Peter fell. “I,” He tells him, “have prayed for you.” And yet you will fall, because you used one word: “I.” That “I” will bring you down to the depths of Hades. “I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.” Not that you may not fall, but that your faith may not fail. For I see what you are doing. You are doing it in ignorance. Are you doing it knowingly? You will deny Me three times before the rooster crows, but you are acting in ignorance.
You are acting out of excessive zeal, but in ignorance of the fact that you can do nothing without Me. I count this as a mitigating circumstance, and I will preserve you from reaching the end of the other one, Judas, who “went away and hanged himself.” So if Christ prays and Peter still falls, how far can our prayers go? Here, then, Christ does not ask the father. The passage gives no indication that He persuaded him or obtained his consent. The call was made to the young men. Obviously, they were adults, not infants. They were grown men, so He could speak to them directly, and they could freely offer themselves. And indeed, when Christ called them, the sons did not even take their father into account.
Was it because they disregarded him out of irreverence? Rather, it was out of reverence, because they thought: By going with Him, I am securing God’s care for you as well, Father. Why? Because what did Christ say? “Whoever leaves father or mother for My sake and for the Gospel will receive a hundredfold here and will inherit eternal life.” All those who have nursed and raised Christian children who later labored close to Christ and in the Church of Christ have a place of honor in the Kingdom of Heaven. This is true of all the parents of those who lived within the close circle of Jesus. Just as His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, is at His right hand, so too the parents
of sons and daughters who live in the clergy, in missionary service, in the Church, and in preaching—who help Christ’s work in general so that other people may be saved—all these people, I say, will have a special place of honor in Paradise.
A special place in Paradise. I have personal knowledge of this, but I cannot speak to you about it or give you the details. I tell you, however, that this is how matters stand. The action of these sons was not irreverent. Rather, they believed completely that through this gesture and this decision, they were also securing God’s care for their poor father.
For He would take care of him as well. When we go to Church, and I, as a man with a family, say, “To Christ our God I entrust all my life”—how does the petition go? “Let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life unto Christ our God”—I offer Him my whole being, all my concerns, all my strength, all the vigor of my life. What will Christ do? Will He leave me to be crushed? Will He not come to my aid in time? Will He not help me? Will He not place a stone in the path to stop my downward fall? He will do whatever He can and whatever He must. These two cases, then, leave us a classic example. It is a great honor if we can offer someone from our family to Christ. First, we must offer ourselves. Then, to offer a person to the Church, a person to wear the cassock. And whatever the Church
gives also asks for blood; for such a household, it is like a cemetery. Yet, as you see, we accuse the clergy, whom God bears with, while proving His acceptance of them by working miracles through them. The Mysteries they celebrate are valid. They work miracles. They bless the water, and it does not spoil. They put on the priestly stole, and Satan is nearly torn apart. If the priest, though sinful as a man, is still used in this way, then whoever does nothing but rage against him is blaspheming Christ, who bears with His clergy. You understand what that means. This is why Christ once said, “He who rejects you”—that is, the one who rejects you—“rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” The one who speaks against the people of God is both antichristian and opposed to God.
In himself he may not be a man of God, but by virtue of the office in which he is clothed, he is a man of God. You respect the police officer because he bears the cross and the flag on his uniform, and you respect him as an instrument of the state—otherwise the prosecutor has you arrested and put in prison—regardless of whether, as a man, that officer may be utterly disgraceful. Infinitely more, the same principle applies to the people of God. There must be respect, and there must be joy among those who regard it as an honor to have someone from their household dedicated to God. In former times, when a family gave lodging to a priest or a monk, naturally he would wash and groom himself in the morning.
Any hairs that came out of his beard while he combed it were treasured by the family as a blessing. The lady of the house would gather them and keep them. If hairs from his beard or head were found on his pillow, she kept those as a blessing as well. That is how things were. There were also people who tended the animals belonging to monasteries. When monasteries gathered produce from the dependent estates they had leased—receiving a mule-load of wheat, a mule-load of oil, and so forth—the monastery mules traveled far, sometimes for days, carrying everything back. Whenever the handlers stopped at a village along the way, they would remain for two or three nights before reaching the monastery. People would practically fight over who would take one of the monastery’s mules, unload it, curry it, feed it, and give it water. In the morning they would care for it again, provide fodder for the road, and hang around its neck a new sheet or towel, a clean pillow, or a suitable blanket, so that it might be taken to the monastery as an offering and a blessing.
There would be a battle in the marketplace, in the village square, over who would take one of the mules. Today we will not even receive a person, let alone a mule; we will not receive a person. On their hindquarters the animals bore a large
mark. You have seen how army animals bear a mark there. In the same way, these bore the mark of the Theotokos: this was the mule of the Most Holy Theotokos. Even if it was merely a horse, it served the monastery, and that was considered something great. In those days the Most Holy Theotokos also protected us through difficult times, because after more than four hundred years of bondage, we ought to have been completely wiped out. Nothing should have remained: neither the Orthodox faith, nor the Greek language, nor our customs—nothing. Yet all these things preserved us. And today, unless we return to honoring the Church of Christ and its ministers, and unless we take care to offer people to its service, we will weep bitterly—not only in this world, but also in the next. For a time will come when there will be no priests to serve a memorial for us,
or to take out a particle for us at the Prothesis. We will end up like the Roman Catholics. For when Roman Catholics die, as you know, the matter comes to an end. They do not have this offering of the sacrifice afterward: you cannot bring a prosphoron, have a particle taken out, and have it placed afterward into the Blood of Christ with the prayer, “O Lord, wash away by Thy precious Blood the sins of this Thy servant,” so that the soul there may experience the most beautiful and profound consolation and rest. They do not have such things. The same will happen to us if we have no clergy, because we condemn them here and now. You do not like the clergy? When you are deprived of them, then you will understand. And do you know what it means to be buried without anyone even able to read the funeral service over you? It is a grave matter. Then your relatives will understand; then everyone will understand. I pray that this may never happen, but we will be repaid according to the way we conduct ourselves. As the saying goes, “As you make your bed, so you will lie in it.” This is why, as you have seen, these men offered
everything. They too had self-respect; they too had a modest career and had built up a little property through their work at sea. This was their profession; to them, their livelihood was like holding a ministry or owning a factory. They had lived from it for thirty or forty years, until Christ came and overturned it all in a fraction of a second, without giving them any guarantee. This shows how great the Person was who took responsibility for them—and they were not disappointed. As you know, today we go—and not only we, but people of every age, until the end of time—to light candles at their feet. And the day after tomorrow, beginning today, we also observe the fast that bears the names of Peter and Paul,
a fast observed in their names.
Indeed, Peter descended even to the depths of Hades; he knocked at the very door of Hell. Three times he denied Christ, all within half a day—from evening until midnight, he denied Him three times. Was that a small fall? And yet, through metanoia, through repentance, and through tears, “he went out and wept bitterly.” Tears are a great thing—the tears of repentance, not tears born of malice. We too weep, but we weep out of malice, because we cannot take revenge; we do not weep out of repentance. These are the lessons taught in the passage I have read to you thus far. In any case, it continues: “And Jesus went throughout all Galilee.” He now continues on His way, and He is no longer alone. He has with Him four disciples whom He has formally called. “Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues.” Do you know why He went to the synagogues? Because the synagogues had the book of the Law of Moses.
There they could readily read it, and He would tell them, of course: “What you are reading, what David told you, has been fulfilled. What Isaiah told you has been fulfilled. What Jeremiah told you has been fulfilled.” He interpreted for them everything written in the Law and the Prophets. In this way, He instructed His own people, and through those whom He was preparing, He gradually opened the way for the work of Christ and the preaching of the Gospel. He was also “preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.” “Infirmity” means sickness: “every disease and every infirmity among the people.” So, it says that He was “preaching the Gospel.” The word “Gospel” is made up of two parts and means good tidings.
Tidings—the good tidings were what He preached. And what were those good tidings? Do you know what they are? That the Son of God became the Son of the Virgin. That God became man. That God took upon Himself the sins of mankind. This is the good news. The Annunciation means good tidings, good news: “Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the Mystery hidden from before the ages: the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin.” This is the great, good, and beautiful news for mankind: a way has been found for our sins to be cleansed, and for all the sins we commit along the way to be set right, provided that we repent. This is the Gospel; that is, the Gospel is Christ Himself. We also call this book the Gospel—for example, the Testament I am holding in my hands at this moment.
We call it the Gospel. Why? Because it speaks about Christ, the good tidings, the good news. Christ is the Gospel. Then Christ came in the flesh; here is Christ on paper. Christ on paper is here before us now. What I am saying to you, Christ Himself is saying to us. Then He spoke these things in person; now He speaks them through the written page. Christ on paper—that is the Gospel. So He proclaimed the good news to them: “What had to be done has now been done.” This is what Paul said here in Athens to our forefathers. Do you remember what he said here in Athens? “The times of ignorance God overlooked.” He put them aside, I say. “But now He commands all people everywhere to repent.” From this point onward, He commands every person to repent.
If someone does not repent, he will receive what follows from that. God has appointed a day, Scripture says, on which He will judge the world in righteousness. There is no longer any room for ignorance. Until now you were ignorant: God overlooked the times of ignorance. You did not know; you had not heard. But why, unfortunately, do we wait for Christ to come and find us, when we ourselves go looking for every kind of sin and every slander of the devil? Yet when it comes to our salvation, we wait for Christ to come and find us. Do you understand? Someone says, “I did not know.” How is it that you learn about all the other filth, but you do not learn about salvation? How is it that you take an interest in learning everything else? How is it that you sit and listen to this person and that person?
You sit there, listening and searching through corrupt programs and the like. How is it that you pick up publications, look at things that destroy you, and actively seek them out because you want them? Yet although so many things are available that can raise you up, you do not seek any of them. Why? Because you do not want to. That is the issue. A person does not want to. This is the one and only issue. Therefore, we must bear this in mind:
When we speak with people who know nothing about the faith, do not begin by speaking to them about doing good, almsgiving, or good works. Without a foundation, these are fairy tales. It is not that such things are not good; but unless the foundation is there—faith in Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene, and in His work of redemption—then no matter what good a person may do, he will not be benefited at all. People who have not been born anew, have not believed, have not received Christ as their Savior, and have not received Christ’s Baptism—or who received it as infants but later rejected and renounced it—
do not want to repent, make their confession, and return. Whatever good work they may do is simply a narcotic that numbs them into believing they are good people and wishing that everyone else were as good as they are. And because there truly are so-called Christians who are not even good people, such people step forward and say, “I am not a Christian, but at least I do not do what that other person does.” Do you remember what I told you the other day about a Jewish woman and one of our own women in a clinic? Do you remember what happened?
We were speaking about the Kingdom of Heaven. Our woman wanted to tell the Jewish woman about the true faith of Christianity. The Jewish woman had gone to the clinic to give birth to her fifth child, while our Christian woman had gone there to kill her fifth child. When our woman learned that the other was Jewish, she began giving her a discourse on Christianity. The Jewish woman replied, “I beg your pardon, madam, but I could never accept a religion that produces such beasts—people who kill their own children.” Do you understand? That is the issue. What good is it for me to tell you, “Do not do this, and do not do that,” unless I first speak to you about Christ? Do you know what Saint Ignatius the God-bearer says?
Do you want to speak to someone who knows nothing? You must tell him three things. First, tell him why Christ came into the world. Second, teach him how to pray rightly to Christ and to ask for everything in the name of Jesus. Third, tell him to prepare himself to suffer for Christ’s sake. It is inconceivable for someone to be a Christian without undergoing torments and tribulations. Such a thing does not exist. A Christian who has no sorrows or trials and passes through life in complete comfort does not possess Christianity; he has been abandoned by God. Read Macarius the Great.
There we read that he was once going down into the city with his disciple when, outside the city, they met a woman who was weeping and wailing bitterly. His young disciple was moved and said, “Elder, we are beasts!” “Why, my child?” the elder asked. “Here is a person weeping and wailing, and we are simply continuing along the road without stopping to see what is wrong.” “She is a woman, my child. Have you forgotten that she is a woman and we are men? God will send the proper person. This mission is not for us.” But the young man could not understand. “But she is a woman—do you not see what is happening? Look, she is weeping. Perhaps we may be able to comfort her.”
So the disciple kept pressing the elder, and at last the elder gave in. They stopped and approached her to see what was wrong. The elder approached her indirectly, keeping the young disciple at a distance, and tried to learn what had happened and why she was weeping so bitterly. For a long time she would not speak. “Tell us,” he said. “We too are human beings. I am not asking out of idle curiosity, but perhaps, as fellow human beings, we can offer you a word of comfort, meet some need of yours, or send someone else to help you.” At last, because they persisted, she raised her head and said, “My elders, go with God’s blessing. You cannot help me with what has happened to me.” But since they had finally heard her speak, the elder continued: “At least let us hear what you have suffered.”
“My elder, do not trouble yourself or waste your time on me. I know very well that you cannot help me.” Still the elder persisted, while she continued to refuse. At last she said to him, “Listen, elder, and I will tell you why you cannot help me. You cannot help me because God has abandoned me.” “God has abandoned you? Then how do you breathe? How do you live? How do you continue to exist?”
And yet she insisted. “Now that you have opened the conversation,” he said, “can you tell me how you understood that God had abandoned you? What sign do you have?” “My elder, for three years I have not experienced a single temptation.” Do you understand? “For three years I have not experienced a single temptation.”
“No illness has troubled me; everything is going well for me—everything. This is a sign that God has abandoned me. That is why the devil does not trouble me. If I did not belong to Satan, he would attack me.” Who thinks like that today? We get a headache and immediately ask for a miracle to make it disappear. A temptation enters our home so that we may be tested, and so that others may see that we endure mourning, poverty, slander, and a thousand other things, and in this way our Christianity may be revealed. Yet we do not want any of that. This is how things truly are, but unfortunately we do not accept it. Saint Ignatius says that there are three things you must teach the person you undertake to guide. You must speak to him plainly.
Christ came into the world—first explain what He came to accomplish. Second, teach the person to depend upon Him for everything in prayer. And third, tell him what awaits him once he becomes a true Christian. Have you not encountered this elsewhere? What did Christ say concerning the Apostle Paul? What message did He give through Ananias? “Go, Ananias, to the place I tell you, for this is the man who will suffer many things for My name and will bear My name before the nations.” He will suffer—that is where we begin. And what did He say to Placidus, who later became Saint Eustathius? What did He say when He spoke to him from between the antlers of the stag?
Placidus had gone hunting. “Go,” Christ told him, “find the Orthodox Patriarch, do whatever he tells you, and return here tomorrow afternoon, to this same place, so that I may tell you what you will suffer for My name.” Not what you will gain or what you will accomplish, but what you will suffer for My name. Do you want to leave? Then leave. I am not promising you a herd of deer. I am not an employer promising you money and wages. This is what a person must expect. We do not give people this teaching. That is why, as you see, we trick someone into becoming a Christian, and then at the slightest temptation he leaves. One woman went and did something terribly misguided. Let me tell you from the beginning. I once spoke with a woman who asked me what she should do, because her husband had no connection with the Church, metanoia and repentance, Holy Confession, or Holy Communion.
I always emphasized that she should be careful to help him gradually, with God’s help, to understand what Christ accomplished in the world. These are not random events when they have moved so many millions of people over the course of two thousand years. Second, he needed to understand what the Mysteries of the Church are. “That is what I want too,” she said, “for him to come to the Mysteries of the Church.” “Yes,” I said, “but he must come to the Mysteries of the Church in the proper way.” “At least let him make a start.” “He must not begin carelessly; he must begin correctly.” In any case, we parted, and then the great feasts arrived.
During the feast days we met again. When she saw me, she was overjoyed and rushed to kiss me, because she had accomplished it: her husband had received Holy Communion. “Allow me to offer you my good wishes and congratulations. Did he go to the priest I told you about, or did he go to another priest and make his confession?” “Are you not going to ask how I managed to get him to receive Holy Communion?” she replied. “Do you think I would have spoken to him about confession and such things?” I said, “Then I beg your pardon. Allow me to withdraw my congratulations.”
“Instead, allow me to offer you my condolences. The man has simply added another deadly sin to all the others he already bears.” He accomplished nothing—and indeed, he had done nothing. The man simply continues living as before. What is this—the end justifies the means? Can the devil be deceived? The devil cannot be deceived.
The devil will let you go and receive Holy Communion without first confessing and repenting. But he will not let you go once you have repented and confessed. He will not; you must struggle in order to go. These things, then, are essential if people are to come onto the right path. For unless sin and darkness are removed through repentance and confession, how can the light come so that a person may see the way? How can all that filth and uncleanness simply remain there? Before putting even a little ointment on a wound, you use plenty of hydrogen peroxide to clean it. Would you put the ointment straight onto all the dirt? You would get the opposite result. So you wash the wound and clean it. It may even bleed, but you must do it. This cleansing has to come first; all the filth must be removed. Then you can apply the dressing and the ointment to soothe and heal it. In the same way, careful preparation is absolutely necessary before a person approaches Holy Communion. The method many people use to bring unbelievers into the Church and make them believers is not the proper one. It produces the opposite result: at the slightest hot wind afterward, the slightest breeze, the slightest tremor, the foundations collapse, and so on.
At midday I met a gentleman who had returned from abroad. “I cursed the day I was born,” he told me. “I cursed this, I did that, I said all sorts of things.” Why? Because his wife had fallen ill. So your wife must never fall ill? Where are the foundations of your faith? Where is your endurance? How did this bring you to deny so many things? How did it bring you to blaspheme Christ? He accepted the Cross, His martyrs endured so much, and Christianity is a tree with nothing but blood around its roots. There is no water there at all; there is blood everywhere. How, then, could we not pass through suffering? But the man is ignorant. No one told him what awaited him, and this is how everyone is invited into Christianity: “Come with me, I tell you, and you will find husbands for your daughters; you will find a job; you will see how God will protect you,” and so forth.
You wake up well in the morning, and by evening you expect to return riding high. What do you think Christ is—a policeman assigned to guard you? You are human. You will suffer; many times you will fall flat on your face. But you must take care of your soul; all the rest may befall you. Was Job not a good man? Look at what he suffered. Yet he gained his soul, however much he suffered—and what suffering it was! These things must take root within a person as right faith and sound guidance. Come, even if they impale you in this world because you have become a Christian—or from the moment you become one. Take heed: becoming a Christian is for your true good. Choose to lose this whole world—even through leprosy, cancer, or whatever else—rather than lose your soul in the world to come. That is where you must begin. Tell the other person the truth. This is what the Gospel says: you will leave father and mother, part from relatives, and lose fields, profits, possessions, and who knows what else
if you want to be a friend of Christ, who has a home for you beyond the grave. For whether we like it or not, we shall leave this world. Did you go to Church the other day? Did you hear the accounts concerning All Saints? How did they become Saints? Are we not to become Saints as well? Why are we here? Is there not a commandment, “Become saints”? Do we not hear, “The Holy Gifts for the holy”? What are we to become—satans?
So how did they become Saints? Go and ask them.
This, then, is what Christ preached: the Gospel of the Kingdom—not of Europe, not of Judea, Arabia, Africa, America, or anywhere else, but of the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, if you want to become a prince of the Kingdom of Heaven, you must come to know the true King, Jesus.
By grace you will become a prince by partaking of the King’s blood. You will become a prince yourself, so that you may have a rightful place in the Kingdom of Heaven. And this Kingdom is inherited. Relatives inherit, as we said when discussing the Gospel of the Judgment: “Come, inherit.” This is not wages earned according to merit; it is an inheritance. Relatives inherit. Read all these things in their proper context, then, so that you may see exactly where we are going. “And He healed,” it says, “every disease and every sickness among the people.” In any case, the point is that we today do not possess the marks of the early Church—the Church through which this present Church came to exist. We shrink from hardship and expect everything from others.
We do not offer ourselves to help the Church—often not even materially or morally, much less bodily or with our blood. We expect priests always to fulfill their calling, yet we have not contributed a penny to enable them to remain at their post. We expect them to be dignified, honorable, upright, and good, while we do not offer our own good children for that calling. We make them lawyers, doctors, engineers, thieves, and who knows what else. And then what do we expect? Where shall we find priests—can we order them from somewhere? Where will the clergy who are to serve among us come from? Where will these officers of the Church be found?

Εάν δεν μετανοήσει, θα έχει τα ανάλογα. Έχει τάξει, λέει, μίαν ημέρα όπου θα κρίνει την οικουμένη εν δικαιοσύνη. Δεν χωράει πλέον άγνοια. Μέχρι τώρα είχατε άγνοια. Υπεριδών ο Θεός τους καιρούς της άγνοιας. Δεν ήξερες, δεν είχες ακούσει. Γιατί εμείς, δυστυχώς, περιμένουμε να έρθει να μας βρει ο Χριστός; Ενώ όλες τις αμαρτίες πάμε και τις βρίσκουμε εμείς. Και όλες τις διαβολές πάμε και τις βρίσκουμε εμείς. Όμως για τη σωτηρία μας περιμένουμε να έρθει ο Χριστός να μας βρει. Καταλάβατε; «Δεν ήξερα», λέγει. Πώς τις άλλες βρομιές τις μαθαίνεις και αυτή δεν μαθαίνεις, τη σωτηρία; Πώς για τα άλλα ενδιαφέρεσαι να τα μάθεις; Πώς κάθεσαι και τα ακούς από την Α, από τη Β;
δεν θέλουν να μετανοήσουν και να εξομολογηθούν και να επιστρέψουν. Οποιοδήποτε καλό έργο και αν κάνουν, είναι απλώς ένα ναρκωτικό που τους ναρκώνει ότι είναι καλοί άνθρωποι και μακάρι να είναι και οι άλλοι σαν κι αυτούς καλοί. Και διότι πράγματι υπάρχουν λεγόμενοι χριστιανοί που δεν είναι καν καλοί άνθρωποι, αυτοί παρουσιάζονται στη μέση και λένε: «Εγώ δεν είμαι χριστιανός, αλλά δεν κάνω και αυτά που κάνει ο άλλος». Θυμόσαστε τι σας είπα προχτές για μια Εβραία με μια δικιά μας σε κλινική; Τι έγινε;
Μιλούσαμε για τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Ηθέλησε η δικιά μας να της μιλήσει, της Εβραίας, περί της σωστής πίστεως του χριστιανισμού. Η Εβραία είχε πάει να γεννήσει στην κλινική και ήταν το πέμπτο παιδί της. Και η κυρία η δικιά μας είχε πάει να σκοτώσει το πέμπτο παιδί της. Και όταν έμαθε ότι είναι Εβραία, της έκανε θεωρία περί χριστιανισμού και λέει: «Με συγχωρείτε πάρα πολύ, μαντάμ μου, ποτέ δεν πρόκειται να δεχτώ μια τέτοια θρησκεία που κάνει τέτοια θηρία, να σκοτώνουν τα παιδιά». Το καταλαβαίνετε αυτό; Αυτό είναι το θέμα. Τι να σου πω εγώ; Μην κάνεις αυτό και μην κάνεις το άλλο, μην κάνεις το άλλο, όταν σου μιλήσω πρώτα για τον Χριστό. Ξέρετε τι λέει ο Άγιος Ιγνάτιος ο Θεοφόρος;
θέλεις, για να είσαι φίλος του Χριστού, ο οποίος έχει και πέραν του τάφου σπίτι. Γιατί από εδώ, είτε το θέλουμε είτε όχι, θα φύγουμε. Πήγατε προχθές στην Εκκλησία; Ακούσατε τα περιστατικά περί Αγίων Πάντων. Πώς έγιναν Άγιοι αυτοί; Εμείς δεν θα γίνουμε Άγιοι; Γιατί είμαστε εδώ; Δεν είναι εντολή «Άγιοι γίνεσθε»; Δεν λέει «τα Άγια τοις Αγίοις»; Τι θα γίνουμε εμείς, σατανάδες θα γίνουμε;
Δεν προσφερόμεθα να βοηθήσουμε την Εκκλησία, ούτε υλικώς πολλές φορές, ούτε ηθικώς, όχι σωματικώς και με αίμα. Θέλουμε τους ιερείς να είναι στη θέση τους πάντοτε, χωρίς να έχουμε δώσει μια δεκάρα για να μπορούμε να σταθούμε στη θέση τους. Θέλουμε να είναι αξιοπρεπείς, τίμιοι, ηθικοί, καλοί, χωρίς να δίδουμε εμείς τα δικά μας τα καλά παιδιά εκεί. Τα κάνουμε δικηγόρους, τα κάνουμε γιατρούς, τα κάνουμε μηχανικούς, τα κάνουμε λωποδύτες, τα κάνουμε δεν ξέρω τι τα κάνουμε. Και τι θέλουμε; Πού θα τους βρούμε, να τους παραγγείλουμε; Πού θα γίνουν οι κληρικοί να πλαισιώσουν; Πού θα είναι οι αξιωματικοί αυτοί;
