Summary
The speaker notes that Revelation's middle chapters are full of types and images that have misled many and that almost no Church Father undertook to interpret the book, while the letters to the churches of Asia Minor, including Smyrna, Philadelphia, Pergamon and Laodicea, carry accessible moral teaching. He applies this to Christians, clergy and even theologians who say 'yes, but' about fasting or the Virgin, comparing the lukewarm to a tree grown crooked that snaps if one tries to straighten it, and urging people to take a clear position rather than compromise. Expounding Revelation 3:17-18, he contrasts the man who says 'I am rich and need nothing' with his real wretchedness and nakedness, recalls the God-woven robe Adam lost and the baptismal garment of 'as many as have been baptized into Christ,' and urges buying gold refined by fire, white garments and eye-salve, since spiritual blindness is worse than physical and one should ask Christ to open one's eyes and accept rebuke from whoever brings it.

Our subject tonight will be taken from a portion of the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, and specifically from the third chapter, verse 14 and following. I don't know whether you have ever read anything at all from the book of Revelation. The first chapters, and the last two, are chapters that contain things a person can take in and digest. The other chapters have all sorts of types in them, all sorts of images and parables, and it is hard for a person to grasp exactly what they mean.
and because of this many people have been led astray on account of Revelation. Besides, you should know that almost none of the Fathers undertook to interpret the Apocalypse. But the first chapters, where John writes at the command of our Lord — we are with the bishops of the churches of Smyrna, the Church of Smyrna, the Church of Philadelphia, the Church of Pergamon, the Church of Laodicea — these have moral lessons that benefit a person. Tonight I have called up this one — not that the others don't have their own teaching, but I liked this one better, it is very instructive — what is written to the bishop of Laodicea. For through John, Christ sent letters to those bishops, and the Lord says here to John: and to the angel of the Church of Laodicea write, He says, write to that bishop the few words I will tell you. These things says the Amen, the real one. These things He says — what does He say? The witness, the faithful and true one, the beginning of the creation of God. These things He says — He has many titles; that is, this is Christ. The witness, the faithful and true, who bore witness to the truth. And the beginning of the creation of God.
Those two words, "beginning of creation," are used constantly by the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Chiliasts, the Bible Students — because they took up all these names — to prove, supposedly, that our Christ is not God, but is the first thing that was created: the beginning of the creation of God, the first one created. He was not begotten, He was created, they say; the Father made the Son, and He is not really the Son of God. But the meaning of the words "beginning of the creation" is not to say that Christ did not exist and was created, came into being. Whereas we confess as doctrine and say: begotten, not made.
"Beginning of the creation" means the archegos of creation — the ruler, the head of creation — not the first one created, but the one who rules over creation. Who is the head of the general staff? Who is the head here in Ilisia — the mayor? Who rules here? So here, the archegos, the head of God's creation: "the beginning of the creation" is the ruler and head of creation, not the one who was created first. So we come across it right at the start and we discuss it; I didn't go looking on purpose for a verse so as to talk to you about what the Jehovah's Witnesses use against the divinity of Jesus, but because it is right here — these words were written by John on Christ's behalf to the Church of the Laodiceans, and specifically to the bishop.
So then: the Amen, the real witness, the true one, the faithful one, the beginning of the creation of God — He writes, He says, and you write it down too. What does He say? I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. Many times we ask someone who is telling us about another person, we say to them: what does this man have to do with Christ? He neither weeps nor laughs. That is, he doesn't reject these things, but he isn't interested either. Something like that was happening with this bishop too. And our Christ hastens to write to him: I see how you are conducting yourself, I see your works. That you are neither cold nor hot — would that you were cold or hot; you had an obligation. This half-and-half business, as we say, is no good. Make your position clear: either deny it or own it — become cold or become hot. As you are, it's yes one moment and no the next, "yes, but" — as happens with many Christians, and even with clergy, and even with theologians. Even though they will of course be considered inconsistent, still this is what happens. Yes, it is written about fasting, but we set that aside. Yes, the Most Holy Theotokos is a virgin, but this is also said. That is, with one hand he builds and with the other he tears down, and so he ruins everyone he meets. Clear up your position, He says. You owe it to us to tell us either that you are not with us or that you are with us. Clear up your position. Many people, unfortunately, walk this way.
this bishop of the Church, and He answers him and tells him what awaits him if he keeps up this policy. So, because you are lukewarm — for something that is neither hot nor cold, what is it? Lukewarm. So, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I am about to spew you out of my mouth. So He writes to the bishop of Laodicea — our Christ, by the hand of John the Theologian. This is what you shall tell him, He says. I don't know whether this happens among us. But I would like to believe that, if not wholly, then in part, there are certain matters that press hard on us: the matter of the flesh, the matter of self-interest, the matter of fashion, of the world, and so on. In these we are not hot Christians, that is, we don't take the right line and stand firm; instead we play politics and fall in with things, we often cut corners, and we become lukewarm. Of course we don't reject those things outright — but you see, we live in the world. You see. So I say that on the whole we may not be lukewarm. But in part, unfortunately, we are in the position of that bishop whom our Christ is observing and is about to spew out.
out of my mouth — I cannot keep you inside me. And it is true that it is easier to make a cold man hot than a lukewarm one. The lukewarm man is what we call the crooked-grown one. He is that tree that was planted but was not looked after as it grew, and it grew crooked. If you go now and take hold of it to straighten it, you'll hear a crack — it will break. It can't be done. That is why a person should never make a compromise. "I didn't know a certain thing." Take a position. "I know it, but I'm not getting it right" — that Christ accepts. He accepts ignorance, but He does not bless my going on remaining in ignorance deliberately. That He does not bless.
Christ does not bless sins. "I did not know a thing and I did it wrongly." That He passes over, He lets it go by. He finds an excuse for you; from here on be careful, He tells you. As Paul also said to our forefathers here in Athens, which we read in the seventeenth chapter of Acts: the times of this ignorance God overlooked. That is how you knew things; you worshipped stones, the gods you had sent up to Olympus. All right, He will let that pass. But now He commands all men everywhere to repent. From now on He calls all people to repent and to get onto the road, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness. So look: if on the whole you are lukewarm, get hot.
you don't get off, just as the cold man doesn't get off — the one who is indifferent in matters of the faith. We are not let off. Christ has to do only with the fervent. The others, both the one sort and the other, He will reject. The cold ones remain outside by themselves; the others put one foot inside, but their heart is outside, and these He will throw out one day as well. So it also has to do with us, in many of the ways we behave — the lukewarm method. We don't take the right position, so that we ourselves may be found right before the Lord and may also help others. Because when a Christian is lukewarm he does not do in all things what the law of the Gospel requires, what his calling requires, and someone who doesn't know may ask him, what do you say about this? — and he may answer in proportion to his own weakness.
A person is obliged to say what is right, even if he himself does not do it, because the other person may be able and willing to do it. I may not yet be able to do this thing, but I am obliged to say it. I must not turn out watered-down, lukewarm Christians. My dear friend, this is how the matter stands; this is how it stands with Holy Matrimony — it involves having children; this is how it stands for the Christian — there is fasting, there is this, that is how it is. You have done it; I am struggling to carry it through. If you can carry it through faster, do it. That man who thinks otherwise has certain excuses lying about in his thinking: that he doesn't think so, that it doesn't matter, or that sometimes he has no need — that he can live without Christ.
that he can get into Paradise in his own way. As a Freemason member of parliament told me years ago, when I had met him. He showed me a Masonic diploma. Why was he forced to show it to me? Because he had told me he was coming from Egypt, back at the time when Nasser had made his revolution. And I said to him, how did you get there? So he pulls it out of his pocket and shows me, and I say to him, so you are a Freemason. This, he says to me — he didn't answer me — this, he says, with this every door is open. That is, all the customs posts, all of that; there is no inspection anywhere. And in fact it doesn't happen; they just initial their suitcases through, once they show that Masonic card. Every door is open, he says to me. And I say to him: except heaven. And he says to me,
we'll manage that too — and he makes a gesture at me with his hand — we'll manage there too. Twenty days later he took his own life in Kolonaki, at his daughters' home, from the third floor; he fell down and was killed. Yes, but I'm telling you what he said: we'll manage there too — that is, we will get in there as well, since here on earth everything is open to us, how could we possibly not slip into heaven too? You will not slip in there, you will not. It is written plainly there in the twenty-second chapter of Matthew, a fine incident that gives a vivid picture of these people who out of their own reckoning construct the kind of religion they want, and make themselves a paradise without any Hell. Whereas their religion has only Hell, it has no Paradise. Only the religion of Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene, has Paradise. No other—
—not Confucius's, nor Muhammad's, nor Buddha's, nor Zoroaster's, nor the Pope's, nor Calvin's, nor Russell's; no doctrine or religion has Paradise. Paradise belongs to Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene, as I have told you before, whose tomb is empty. In contrast to all the other so-called founders of religions, who are inside, fixed there in their shrouds, inside the tomb. They did not rise. So I say that there is a beautiful image there. It presents a wedding that a man was going to hold, and a great banquet, and he had invited many. Many came in, both bad and good. When the hall had filled up, the Lord went in to recline, to look them over, to see those who had come in.
He goes straight to one table where there was a man who heard the following from our Christ: "Friend, how did you get in here" — how did you make it this far — "not having a wedding garment?" It was the custom that if someone held a celebration, at the door where the invited guests would come in there was a man who had a wardrobe of robes, and he would give each one a long robe. And a guest would put it on over his own little suit — I don't know what it was, whether it was wool, whether it was linen, whether it was cotton, whether it was homespun, I don't know. He would put on a long robe. And you were all uniform inside; people did not present themselves according to their own worth, but in the colour, the style, and generally the finery that
the host who was holding the celebration provided. You paid nothing. This gentleman, this egotist, did not take what was offered to him at the door so that he would be uniform inside there with the others, but he presented himself in his own little suit. And the host goes straight to him and says to him: "Friend" — that is, my friend — "how did you get in here not having a wedding garment?" What was he to say? "I'm an egotist and I didn't want to take that thing they gave me there, and I came in my own"? He was struck dumb, it says; struck dumb — as if to say he put a zipper on his mouth; he said nothing at all. And this Lord gives the order to bind him hand and foot and throw him outside, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
What does He mean to tell us here? Whatever cunning you may use, by your own methods or with the help of others and the backing of others, where do you want to imagine that you have made it all the way into Paradise? They will throw you out of there. It makes no difference; you cannot escape. What do people of religion say? They say, I don't think so, I can't imagine it, it will be like this, God is good. Whatever you may say, you cannot stand before the justice of God. Listen to how this man was thinking. Because that is what compelled our Christ to write to him through John: you say that I am rich, and have grown rich, and have need of nothing. There are people who say, I have no need of anyone. We hear this. And you do not know that you are the wretched one.
and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked. Listen: you didn't see it, He tells him, you don't know? You who say that you have everything and have need of no one — that you are wretched and miserable. And poor, and blind, and naked.
everything… As for the naked man,
who was rich and thought that he was this and that, and so much besides, He tells him: you are blind and naked, because I am the one who clothes people with grace
in my Kingdom. A person cannot on his own tailor his own little suit, as we say, and issue himself a ticket to pass into the Kingdom. If Christ does not regenerate us, if Christ does not clothe us, does not give us that symbolic garment we receive at our Baptism… Have you noticed: "Grant me a robe of light, O Thou who art robed in light as with a garment," and "as many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." Have you noticed these things? They are not accidental, these things the Holy Orthodox Church has. If you open the Triodion of the days of compunction, at the day of Adam's expulsion and his going out from Paradise, which is on the last so-called Apokreo — that is, on Cheesefare Sunday, since there are not two Apokreo; there is one Apokreo, and the other one our belly invented
you will find a troparion that says, "Wretched that I am, I have stripped off the God-woven robe." God had given them that grace. Adam and Eve were naked, and they felt no shame, they were not embarrassed, because as long as they had not disobeyed, grace covered them. When they disobeyed, grace withdrew, their nakedness appeared, and they rushed to make coverings for themselves out of fig leaves — our bikinis of today. We have ended up in the same disaster as those who found themselves naked. Christ is the One who clothes a person and gives him the wedding garment, so that he may appear in the Kingdom of Heaven. And we symbolise this with our burial shroud. What is the shroud for? What is the shroud?
The shroud is a confession that we were left naked, as descendants of Adam and Eve, and that we believed in Christ and were clothed and now have boldness before Him. That is why during Holy Week we sing, "I see Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, and I have no wedding garment that I may enter there." That garment — the spiritual one. Our wardrobe may hold I don't know how many suits; in the eyes of Christ we are wretched, we are naked, we are poor, we are stripped bare and laid open before Him. In God's eyes, and in reality, that is how it is, if a person is willing to think it through. Never mind that we lie to ourselves and we see the prostitute wearing white, wearing the garment of purity. While she is a prostitute — let us not look at the prostitute who goes to be crowned in Holy Matrimony and they bring her lilies,
the lilies of virginity and purity, when she has left nothing untried in the world for one, two, three, five years, and then goes to be crowned. These are our own ways of burying our heads in the sand. We are the ones lying; it is our own distorted way of seeing these things. A pickpocket may wear white — am I to say he is pure because he is wearing the symbol of purity, of cleanness? How can he be a pickpocket, how can he be a thief, how can he be dishonest, and how can that make him pure? It is the same in matters of religion. Do whatever you like, let them say whatever they like about you, let them call you a saint as much as they want — Christ is the One who will clothe you. So if Christ has not given you that garment — and He does not give it to everyone, but to the faithful, to the humble, to those who, whatever they have, whatever virtue they may achieve, attribute it to God —
that is to say, they say and they live out what Paul said. Whatever I am, he says, I am not so of myself. I am so from God. "I am what I am" — I am whatever I am from Him, from Christ. If He does not clothe me with His grace, if He does not cleanse me with His blood, if He does not do what needs to be done, I have no place in the Kingdom of Heaven. Now this man says, "I am rich and have grown rich and have need of nothing." He looks at material things in this world, he sees that he has succeeded by the world's standards, and so on. But in the eyes of God he is blind, even though his eyes are wide open. Because the truly blind man is not the one who is blind in the flesh. That is not a pitiable thing; for him it is not a pitiable thing. Of course it is a hard thing for a person to lose his sight, but compared with being spiritually blind...
many times over it is better to be blind in the flesh than to remain blind in spirit. Because the one is healed the moment he reaches the grave; the other is not healed. He stays blind in reality and for eternity. So, faced with this condition of his, which he could not see and in which he thought he was something, Christ gives him a piece of advice: "I counsel you to buy from Me gold." Not the kind you get from the money-changers and the rest of them and from the stock exchange. Gold from Me, refined in the fire, which is pure, which has no foreign matter in it. And of course this means the spiritual side. Because spiritual wealth like this belongs not to Satan — this is the spiritual property of Christ, and it is genuine, it is unmixed,
twenty-four carat, as we used to say, and it does not weigh a person down. Buy — I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, passed through the flame and purified, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed and the shame of your nakedness not be revealed.
That it not be revealed — because one day this lion's skin you are wearing will fall away, and you will stand exposed before the eyes of God at the Judgment, at that great feast when each one is repaid according to what he has done. Then the shame of your nakedness will be revealed, and it will be seen that you were a whitewashed tomb, a tomb with filth and stench inside it, however fine you looked on the outside.
"And eye-salve, to anoint your eyes, that you may see." Many people put all sorts of eye-drops in their eyes. Here Scripture speaks of an eye-salve. Take, He says, the eye-salve that fits your case, and put it in your eyes so that you may see. Because it is true that we see in our own way; we do not see as we ought to see. And the eye-salve a person applies makes all the difference. It is one thing to see with an eye to your own advantage, in a fleshly, worldly way, and to say of someone, "He has arrived, he has made it, he has succeeded in life," and so on. It is quite another to have the eye-salve that lets you see spiritually — whether you have really succeeded, and whether the others have really succeeded in what they think, or what people say, they have achieved. The one is very different from the other. He is rebuked. And if he is of good will, he listens, he swallows his ego, and he begins to put it into practice.
It is Christ. Christ rebukes people in various ways, and especially those in whom He sees promise, who can become good, if not better. Do not take it badly if sometimes you hear something that stings you, that touches your ego, that touches your flesh, that touches your interests, that touches your stomach. Listen to it. Don't say, "So-and-so said it — who is he to say that?" You are to take it as though Christ said it. Because Christ uses human beings to remind human beings of the right road. He does not send angels, nor does He come Himself; He holds back.
He has sent people to do this work. So when you hear something that up to now does not agree with the way you live, hold on to it. Look at it and test it. It may be a voice of God rebuking you. Don't say, "Who said it? Who is this man who says these things?" Are the things he says right? That is what concerns you. It is not a question of who is saying them. Because just as you don't pick and choose between people when they are handing out gold coins — whether it is a king or a beggar, you go and take your little sovereign and you don't care who he is — that is exactly how you should act when you hear truths that are gold refined in the fire, as it says here. But for a person to see these things, that he is not acting rightly, and to ask God
for Christ to put the eye-salve in his eyes so that he begins to see. Because when a person cannot see — how will you ask a housekeeper whose eyesight has failed to keep the place clean? How can you ask it? On his own a person can see certain things in this world. But he cannot see the things of that other world. And then he must ask Christ for that particular grace: "My God, open my eyes so that I too may see." Paul could not see. How could he see? He was leading the arrest squad, and he could not see. Then, when he turned to Christ, the scales fell from his eyes; and when he turned to Christ, the very One he had been persecuting he now defends. So he had not been seeing — his eyes were open, but he was not seeing.
But when, on Christ's behalf, the hands of Ananias touched Paul's head, then everything changed. The man who said he could see saw that he had been blind, and now he sees differently. He was persecuting Christ; entering Damascus he defends Christ, and now he is the one being persecuted. Now, the first disciples did not accept Paul; they thought he was bluffing, that he had come to trick them. They had the information that he was coming down there at the head of the detachment, and so they hid themselves, they gathered together. How could they have imagined what had happened to him on that road, and how the change came, and how the scales fell from his eyes, and how the very thing he was persecuting yesterday he defends today, and with his own blood at that. That is why it is often good for us to pray and to say to our Christ:
"My Lord, I am making this small struggle, I am walking this road. One day, whether I want to or not, I will meet You. How will I find You, I wonder? Tell me whether to go on as I am, or to come to You another way. Enlighten me, I beg You, in case I am going wrong, as human beings do. In case, being human, I have not grasped how things really stand. I am a man — what do You expect from dust? 'He remembered that we are dust.' He Himself knows, it says, that we are made of earth." So what can a man made of earth produce? What will he do? He will sin, he will steer crooked, he will make mistakes. The only One who is never mistaken is Christ. "So put some of that eye-salve in my eyes too, the one You prescribed to the bishop of Laodicea, so that I may see whether what I am doing is right,
whether what I stand for is right, whether the way I conduct myself is right" — because whether we want to or not, we will have to do it, we will have to...
...stand before You one day. And what will happen then? I have no margin left. Yet hardly any of us, out of egotism or out of ignorance, has ever opened his mouth to say, "My Christ, illumine me." Of course, if he comes to some crossroads he asks God to show him what to do, but for the most part he is the one telling God what to do. You don't let God speak; you do the talking and you want God to countersign. Because that is how most of our requests are — our own. So are the Paraklesis supplications to the Theotokos, to the Saints, and all the rest of it. But there has to be an openness of hands, a readiness. "I am ready to change my road. I am ready to give it all back. I am ready to break off this attachment. I am ready — tell me, if this is what stands between me and the Kingdom of Heaven." So here He presents this man as having nothing: naked, wretched, miserable, poor, blind.
...he had left nothing out; he had everything on him. At one point he thought highly of himself and looked down on others, and we took him for an important figure. Because a person does not easily build up a great idea of himself unless the elements that feed it come from outside as well — there are people around him too, saying, "Oh, my, my!" and, "If you don't go to Paradise, who will?" and things like that. There are always those who dig around in the flowerpot of a man's egotism, and so he builds himself an egotistical throne and says, "I am, and there is no one else." And then it comes from above and takes hold of us and shakes us out. I have used this before at other times, but it comes to mind and I want to say it. We ought to ask Christ how He sees us. Because you see me one way. My own people see me a different way from you.
...I see myself differently from the way you see me or my own people see me. Three opinions, and none of them is worth anything anywhere. What does it matter to us what you say about someone? What does your wife say, what do you say about yourself? What do I say? So at this moment the question is not what opinion you have of me. What opinion my co-workers and my own people have,
what opinion I have of myself — what matters is what opinion Christ has of me and of you at this hour. So if a person thinks this way, he will put many things right in this world, because our Christ in His love will help him, will remind him — He may even give him a terrible dream, a nightmare, to show him that the road he is following and what he is doing and what he believes is not right.
But we do not have the humility to ask for it — and this applies above all to people who have it in them to go forward. Apart from certain ones who have shut the door on Christ from the very start, and to whom the same applies, Christ hastens toward all the others; even if He seems unpleasant in their eyes, still He hastens to speak to them. That is why He says to this man too, whom He clearly loved — he was a man of the Church — He says, "I, your Master, as many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent." I cannot leave this unsaid to you. I will rebuke you and I will test you, I will chasten you. And chastening here means education, training — not "I will punish you." To chasten is to train.
Intensive drills, they say; intensive rehearsals; intensive training, as the athlete puts it, so that he can boot the ball clear downfield. That is what Christ does: He trains a person to make him fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. Because the person who — like children who never received training from a father or a teacher and so on — they stay coarse and they become the terror of society. The same thing happens with Christians. Christians must not remain at the infant stage, at the stage of their infant baptism and nothing more. They will have to sit the examinations later on, they will have to be trained; and a person must say with humility, not "What did I ever do to God?" as some people say, "What did I do to God?" No — rather, "Give me anything else too, Lord, if You think it will do me good,"
…for Him to allow it. Besides, our temptations — the ones we're examined by and 'chastened' by, in the language of Scripture, though in the broader sense we're being trained — our hardships, our tribulations, our tears, we make them ourselves. We're not Paul, that God should permit a thorn of Satan to buffet us so that we would not be exalted. On our own — on our own we chose the wife or the husband and filled the world with tears. We never asked Christ for them. On our own we set up the business, and our partner ate up our money. We only called Christ in to do a fake blessing of water, an Agiasmos — and the moment we're back inside we start telling lies, and so on. On our own we made the journey; we never said, You go on ahead of us…
…and they scraped us up off the electric company's pole. On our own, on our own — our ego. We ask no one anything. On our own we decide to put our children through school and turn them into big shots out in the world. Why? He's cut out to be a carpenter, but I want to make him a civil engineer. But he doesn't have that many revs in him; he hasn't got what it takes. How are you going to make him a civil engineer when he's cut out to be a carpenter? He's cut out to shine shoes in Omonia Square — how are you going to do it? 'But our household can't turn out such lowly people,' and so on. But it isn't the trade that makes the person; the person makes the trade. Christ was a carpenter — is that worth nothing? Paul made tents — so he's nothing, is he? Did he have to be a king's son for us to lean on his arm, on his position, on his stripes? It isn't like that. The centre of gravity, a person's worth, is in the soul — but our own egotism won't allow it. A woman — He made her for the home, to cook, to wash, to raise her children, to be a queen in her own house. She's looking to be queen in the world; she'll lose eternity.
So when we step into the middle of it with our own ego, without asking Christ about it, it's only natural that we fail. That's why people create tribulations for themselves, and they're chastened and trained and worn down — from morning till night, he says, it's Hell. You built that Hell with your own hands. Don't even ask about it: if Christ opened your file for you, you'd be ashamed; you'd get up and walk out. Christ didn't make your cross for you — you made it yourself, with your egotism and your unbelief. So He says, 'As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.' That's the only way. The way that costs nothing: metanoia (repentance) — a great matter. But repentance presupposes that a person is willing. And the person isn't willing. Or rather he is willing, but he wants it his own way.
…and Christ doesn't accept blackmail from anyone: 'If you want it, then on my terms.' The electric company won't put in your power unless their man comes to check the installation, to see whether it was done according to the rules. They won't give you power. And no more can you get yourself into eternity by practising religion however you please — where will you stand on that Day? Whatever a person has done, repentance sets it right. It is something that came up out of Hades after the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of our Christ. Remember, when He rose, that first evening when He stood in their midst — this Mystery of repentance and Confession and the forgiveness of people's sins, Christ brought it up from Hades. 'Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven them; whose sins you retain, they are retained.'
…it comes down to a person's will. We don't want Christ, because He rebukes our unlawful life. We don't want Christ, because He rebukes our unlawful bed, our unlawful cooking pot, our unlawful cash drawer, our unlawful fashions. He rebukes all of it, and so we don't want Christ. That's the reason. If we repent, He doesn't even give a thought to what happened. Our Christ never once demanded an account from a sinner. He never said to anyone, 'Why did you do that?' Do you want to change? Do you want to get well? Are you repenting? Then there's no discussion at all. Did He rebuke the prodigal? Not a word. The prodigal, for his part, admitted he had made a mess of things: 'I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' Very well — bring out the finest robe, put shoes on his feet,
give him a ring, and kill the fattened calf as well. Not one word of discussion — not the way we do it, or the way the elder brother did it: 'This son of yours, who has devoured your living with harlots.' He calls him a fornicator; the father never called him that. He was the one handing out grades to the Lord — and he was the one who stayed outside. Of course, this doesn't encourage us to sin on the grounds that repentance exists and we'll settle our affairs later. No — because we don't know the hour or the moment when we leave this world, and so we don't know whether we'll be able to use this weapon called repentance. Do you know whether you'll get home? Do you know whether you'll see the morning? A lady went home — her husband was a doctor — and found him inside on the concrete floor, dead.
…last night, again; in a fraction of a second he was gone. What good is it that repentance exists, if you don't get to it in time and you don't know the hour when you'll leave this world? Especially nowadays, when there are so many modern ways for people to go — not one by one, but in whole groups — off to that kingdom beyond this world. A person ought always to have his papers in his pocket, just as a driver has to carry his licence, his inspection certificate, his rest-day record — he has to have it all with him, ready for a traffic police check at any moment. In exactly the same way, the believer, who is a traveller through this world, must have his ticket ready, sealed with red ink,
signed in red ink with the blood of our Christ, in the Orthodox Church, so that he is ready to travel at any moment. Do I know whether I'll get home? Do you know whether you'll get back to yours? It's a very arrogant thing to say, 'I'm young, I'll be back.' Not at all — you're in Another's hands, and He is the one who will decide. So I can say that this medicine of repentance is a universal medicine that sets everything right — but I cannot put off taking it until some later time, because I don't know when that time is. When my doctor tells me, 'Take these medicines to keep your condition stable,' and I leave the medicines on the shelf to take them two years from now, I'll be off to the cypresses and the medicines will still be sitting there. That's how it is. 'Repent, therefore,' He says.
For a person to repent, he has to want it inwardly, to admit that he is in the wrong, to admit that the road he's walking isn't the right one — and change course. I told you something similar the other day, if you remember. These days, take almost anyone: tell him, 'Are you all right?' and he'll say no. And what are you doing about it, since you're not all right? He goes right on doing the same things. Do you know what it means to admit that you're sick, and that there's a medicine to make you well, free of charge — and then to go on making your illness worse instead of better? Where's the logic in that? Do you know what it's like to be heading for Patras, and they find you in Lamia and say, 'Where are you going, Panagopoulos?' 'I'm going to Patras.' 'But the road you're on goes to Thessaloniki.' 'What are you telling me? Have I made a mistake like that? Thank you very much' — and then, instead of turning back for Patras, I carry straight on for Thessaloniki. That's what we do. We admit we're on the wrong road.
We admit that this isn't what God wants, that this isn't the road that leads us to the Kingdom of Heaven. Do you remember what is said in the funeral service? 'I too have found the way.' Which way did you find, the one that leads to the Kingdom, and how did you find it? Through repentance. 'I too have found the way' — through repentance. There is no other road. The road that put people out of Paradise was the road of unrepentance. Yes, they fell, and God helped them to repent, but they passed the blame on. It's not my fault, it's Eve's. It's not my fault, it's the serpent's. It's not my fault, it's Adam's. And so on. 'You're the one to blame, God — we're not. You're the one who made Adam and Eve and the serpent.' And what came of it? Not only did they sin, they also failed to repent. And there you have it — that's how they ended up outside. That road is called the road of sin and unrepentance. So to come back — and you won't come back by the same road — you'll come back and enter in
by another. This road now, once you're willing to come back, will be called either the road of sinlessness or the road of repentance. Either you won't sin at all — and that is a hard thing. There is no one who will live and not sin; there is no such person. 'You alone, Lord, are without sin.' But because the medicine of repentance exists, you find the road again. And so, through repentance, you return to the homeland you long for — the homeland we, the dead, ask for once more through the lips of the chanter: 'Grant me the homeland of my longing, making me again a citizen of Paradise.' Make me a citizen of Paradise once again. Do you see? The one and only medicine. Epiphanios the Great was once speaking with a Jewish man, and because he had worked a miracle for him, the man was troubled in his thinking. And he says,
he says, 'What is it that makes it hard for me to become a Christian now?' And Epiphanios tells him: your own will is what makes it hard, nothing else. Not that you're unbaptised, not that you've reviled Christ, not that you deny Him as Messiah — none of that. Your will is what makes it hard. If you are willing, everything is set right. But if you're not willing, then that will of yours shuts you out, and you cannot become a Christian. It's the same with us. We don't want to leave sin behind — it isn't that there's no way to settle the debts, the spiritual debts of our sins. So Christ's exhortation is this: be zealous, warm yourself up, believe it, act on it — your life has to change — and repent. And when you repent, everything is put in order. I have left you a way to settle your affairs, through your Confession. But I don't force you. And then He goes on:
'I stand at the door and knock.' That is what I am doing right now, on Christ's behalf. I haven't come inside your hearts, I haven't come inside your souls; I'm on the outside. But with the words I'm speaking to you, I'm knocking at the door of your soul. 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.' That is, a person is united with Christ already from this world. It is the table of Holy Communion. A person is united with Christ from this world. But this question arises:
Since you say — and it is so — that the door is the human soul: didn't Christ make these things? He made them. Then why doesn't He push the door open and come in? Why does He stand outside knocking? Why doesn't He simply open it? The handle, the latch as we call it, is on the inside, inside the person's soul. On the outside it's smooth. You hear the voice, and you are the one who opens from within. The law respects the right of sanctuary — our own law, the secular one here. The sanctuary of the home: they can't come at just any hour. It takes a prosecutor's warrant and so on for that sanctuary to be broken into. Christ does not force a person. I bombard you; you are the one who has to surrender.
You have to open for Me to come in. And if you open — because you are self-determining, you have that power, only you can dispose of yourself. Do you remember the case of Job, what I told you? God gave the order: take Job as well — but not his soul. 'Then let me have him whole.' No — his soul, if he wants to, he will hand over to you himself, devil; I do not grant it to you. It's the same here. Christ doesn't force His way in and say, let me make him good. No. You are listening at this hour, and others will listen at the ends of the earth, wherever these talks go. If they want to, they'll open and let Christ inside, and then there will be a banquet — one that will truly take place on that Day, but there is a foretaste of it and a joining already from this world. Many, though, have business to attend to. They put it off and don't open to Christ, even though He is knocking.
He knocks with deaths, He knocks with cancers, He knocks with poverty, He knocks with unemployment, He knocks with paralysis, He knocks with persecutions, He knocks with earthquakes, He knocks with plagues, He knocks with wars — He knocks and knocks and knocks. But no one opens. No one opens, no matter what. One day a lady went to the market with her little boy, and they passed a man selling icons. He had one of those icons that shows Christ outside a door, knocking. The child knows a little from Sunday school. 'Mummy,' he says, 'why don't they open the door for little Christ to come in, when He's knocking?' 'Come along, my child,' she says, 'they must be inside in the kitchen and they can't hear.' They went on, did their shopping, and came back. So they passed by again, and the little one found Christ still outside; He hadn't gone in yet. He says, 'Mummy, look, they're still keeping Him outside!' 'Now don't take it the wrong way, child — didn't I tell you they must be inside and they can't hear?' The very same thing happens with us.
…we keep Christ outside. Do you let Christ in and then send for the dressmaker to make yourself a pair of men's trousers? Do you let Christ in and then turn your bed into a brothel? No, you don't do that — so out with Christ, out with the Nazarene, as that man said, our old prime minister, when they brought him Holy Communion at the last moment: out with the Nazarene. Out with the Nazarene here — and out with you there, most certainly. That, more or less, is what this lesson has to teach us. We'll stop here, and I pray that the holy God will help us to hold on to what is right. And what I would especially like us to hold on to is this: to ask Him for eye-salve for our eyes, so that we may see where we are walking — as individuals, as a family, as Church, as a nation.

θα βρείτε σε ένα τροπάριο που λέγει ότι Στολήν Στολήν θεοΰφαντον απεξεδύθην ο τάλας εγώ. Θεός του είχε τη χάρη, γυμνόσων ο Αδάμ και η Εύα δεν εντρέποντο, δεν εσύνοντο, εφόσον δεν είχαν παρακούσει, τους εκάλυπτε η χάρις. Όταν παρήκουσαν, απεσύρθη η χάρις και εφάνηκε η γύμνια τους και έσπευσαν να φτιάξουν περιζώματα με φύλλα συκής, τα μπικίνι τα δικά μας τα σημερινά. Είμαθα στην ίδια καταστροφή που ευρέστησαν οι γυμνοί. Ο Χριστός είναι εκείνος ο οποίος ενδύει τον άνθρωπο και του δίνει το ένδυμα του γάμου για να παρουσιαστεί στη βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Εμείς δε αυτό το συμβολίζουμε με το σάβανό μας. Τι δουλειά έχει το σάβανο, τι είναι το σάβανο;
