Summary

The homily opens with St Paul's measure for self-examination: whether a person is still carnal or has become spiritual is judged by the fruit their life produces, as flesh and spirit are two trees bearing opposite fruits. Illustrations from Martha and Mary, the body's return to dust, and the gluttony that fills hospitals after feast days argue that indulgence costs a person both this life and the next. A grafting analogy makes the point that a bitter orange tree yields sweet fruit only once grafted, so no one has the Spirit without Christ; the speaker argues that groups rejecting the title Theotokos thereby deny Christ's divinity, citing St Gregory the Theologian, and locates the Spirit in the Church through baptism by immersion, the Pentecost kneeling prayers of St Basil, and the dove that returned to Noah's ark.

…by the grace of God, to say something that might give us all a chance to see what state we are in. That is: are we spiritual people, or are we still carnal people? Because the Apostle Paul, who has taken up this subject and speaks to us responsibly and sets our bearings straight, gives a person a measure by which to see, from his own life, what state he is in — whether he is still a carnal person, or whether he is a spiritual one. Because the flesh has its own results, and the spirit has its own results. It is as if we were to say that the flesh is a tree bearing its own kind of fruit, just as the spirit is a tree that also bears its own kind of fruit. So he speaks about this, writing to the Galatians. If you too read the Scriptures now and then, you will have come across it. In his fifth chapter, I see,

verse 16 and following. He begins first with the flesh, with the negative side, so as to come afterwards to the positive. "I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." That is: I urge you to walk in the spirit.

"Do not fulfil the lust of the flesh." I do not know whether you have noticed that the flesh always desires against the spirit, and the spirit always against the flesh. That is, the things the flesh enjoys — the pleasures, the applause of the world, the shouts of "bravo," the flashes of egotism — these are things the spirit does not want. A spiritual person does not want these things; on the contrary, he wants other things, spiritual things. But a carnal person wants precisely what the spirit does not want. In other words, the flesh and the spirit are, in a manner of speaking, enemies.

When a person is not careful, what happens? Since the flesh was given to us as a beast of burden and not as a rider, what happens now? The flesh becomes the rider and the soul becomes the beast of burden. The soul is led about and dragged along, taken by the ear: the flesh takes hold of the soul and carries it off into the things of this world, and so into ruin. Whereas the flesh ought to be governed by the spirit, by my soul. The soul will weigh the matter, the soul will judge it, the soul will choose whether this is to happen or not. Desire will not give me orders; the world will not give me orders; fashion will not give me orders; nor will anyone else, whoever it may be. If it is to the benefit of my soul, then I must do it. If it is not to the benefit of the soul,

then I must not do it — however much the flesh throws itself down on the floor. This inner conflict, which ought to be there permanently inside a person, we do not find in many so-called spiritual people. They have made their peace with their dear little flesh: whatever the poor battered thing asks for, they gladly hand over. Whatever pleasure wants, whatever the world wants, whatever the ego wants, whatever self-interest wants — it is all accommodated. Such a person cannot even be called a Christian. But if a person stands up against it, and chooses what is needed from a spiritual point of view, then that person can be called a Christian.

People say that fornication is a natural thing. Yes, it is natural — but there is a blessed kind of natural, and there is an unlawful kind of natural. Food, too, is blessed, and it is natural, because a person gets hungry and has need of it. But the spiritual person discerns and says: today is Wednesday; we are hungry, we will eat, but only what is fitting. We will not eat what is not permitted. Are we hungry? Yes — we will satisfy you. But lawfully: with Lenten food, with fasting food, we will satisfy you, Madam Flesh. Unfortunately, a person does not see these things, and though he is a Christian he does many things that not even the idol-worshippers do, because he thinks that simply holding the title of Christian — and an Orthodox one at that — is enough. No. The tree is judged by its fruit. So then, if the fruit is not of the corresponding kind —

are we Christians? If we were willing, as I have told you on another occasion, to bend over the words of the Gospel and study them, we would find a good guide to lead us safely to where it is to a person's benefit to go — that is, to the Kingdom of Heaven.

"Do not fulfil," he says, "the lust of the flesh" — do not give in to it. The flesh always wants things that lead you to Hell. Do not listen to it. The flesh whimpers; it is an ant-lion. Sometimes it plays the ant and sometimes it plays the lion. "Here I am; nothing can touch me!" And other times it plays the ant: it is sick, it whimpers, "Oh dear, oh dear, I am going to die, I must put something in my mouth and eat, I am an invalid —"

"— and an invalid and a traveller commit no sin." And it finds still other excuses besides, to persuade you to give in and satisfy the flesh. Here the holy Apostle says: "Do not fulfil the lust of the flesh, for the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh." You have seen the dog with the cat? The flesh and the spirit are enemies like that — the flesh and the soul are enemies. And woe to us if we are not careful, and this fox, the flesh, devours the spirit, and now the spirit is working on the flesh's account. Whatever you give, however much you concede to the flesh, it goes only as far as the grave — filth and stench. But whatever you deny the flesh and grant instead to the soul, those are things you will take with you.

Do you remember Martha, who was cooking to set a table for our Christ? Was she doing something bad, or something good? And yet He did not call her blessed. He called Mary blessed, of whom He says, "she hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." As if He were saying: your pots and your cooking will stay behind here. Whether we eat something splendid today, or whether we eat a salad today. Right after Pascha, with Bright Week,

many people put the question whether they may eat meat at Mid-Pentecost. Others have now asked me whether they may eat at the leave-taking — the apodosis — of the feast of Pascha, on the eve of the Ascension. A matter of the belly! And a serious matter it is; do not laugh. A person is preoccupied with his belly; he arranges the whole menu around his belly: today they eat meat. And if you do not eat meat for one day, will you die? Do you want an Occupation to come upon us before you will straighten yourself out? How else is it going to happen? "For the flesh," he says, "lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other." There you have it — the two things are opposed. Never set about enslaving your soul to your belly, to your flesh, to your desires, to your egotism, to what the world wants, to the shouts of "bravo," to the applause, to the fashions, and all the rest.

— enslaving your soul. The flesh is under obligation to work for the soul. The flesh is a cage that must have a nightingale inside it. The flesh is a shell that must have a good egg inside it. The flesh is a car that must have a good driver. We pay no attention to these things, and we let ourselves be enslaved, and time after time we give in. Without taking care of the soul, we take a great deal of care of the body — and you see it, after all, in mothers with their children. They trample on the fasts. They teach them habits now that the children will not be able to break tomorrow. How much they ought instead to be training them, from now, in fasting and in self-control and in going to church — to get up early, to go, and so on.

— all on the flesh's account: "let the darlings not get tired, in case they don't come up to the right kilos, the right grams" — and so they enslave their soul to the body. It is a great and serious matter, who is going to be inside this body. Years ago, a few years back, I saw an advertisement from an oil company, and it said this: put a tiger in your engine. And it was talking about the oil — that with this company's oil your car's engine would run so well it would be a beast. I laughed when I saw it. I said: fine, you will put a tiger in the engine — but who are you going to put at the wheel? That is the question.

So it is not a matter of turning the body into a tiger. Who is going to steer it? Whom will you put at the wheel? What kind of soul will you have? Will you have Satan at the wheel, or will you have Christ? And even so, we are unwilling to make distinctions and to deny a few small things to this flesh — which is going to abandon us. It will stay behind here. "Go wherever you like," it says. "I am staying here. I am a promissory note that I owe to the earth, and I have to return to the earth." Take note: dust, or soil — "dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return" — and to the soil I shall go. Go to a scientist and ask him: what are we made of? You will laugh when he tells you what we are made of.

Calcium, a little iron, a little water, a little phosphorus — such small things are what we are. And where do they end up? In the earth. We shall pay it all back. What do you feed on? On aubergines, on okra, on courgettes, on fish, on meat from animals that feed on grass, and so on. It is all earth; it is all soil. And so the body has no right to take anything at all with it. The body will say: I am going to leave you, go wherever you like — but look at the state you have put me in. That is the point. Who told you to listen to me? That is what it will say tomorrow. I was a dumb beast, you were the rational one — why did you listen to me? Am I the one to blame?

As you conduct yourself, so you will be — and I suffered along with you. I suffered on the operating table, I suffered in the crash, I suffered in the hospital, I suffered in who knows how many other places, and all of it because of the way your mind worked.

God set you on horseback; He set you to hold the reins and to drive the body, not to be driven by the body — to steer and to tame the desires, and not to be driven by the desires and swept along. Am I to blame, when you laboured only to enjoy yourself? That is the answer the body will give tomorrow — this body that we feed and coddle and pamper. If I tell you there are two thousand beauty institutes in Athens, what will you say? Places that sculpt flesh. What for? For honest work? For Paradise? No. For fornication and for adultery. There is no other purpose. So the sculpting of the flesh in all these beauty salons has no other purpose than, under the cover of good taste, to serve

and to create desires for fornication and for adultery — for nothing else at all. And even so: "for all these things I will bring thee into judgment," says Christ. So the flesh, he says, lusts against the spirit. It leads you along, it stirs up the appetite in you, the desire; it goads you. Stop. Check it. Here you are, about to take something and put it in your mouth, and you smell it. Ah — it has gone sour; you throw it out. Why? So that you will not end up at the emergency room. And so that you will not end up in Hell, what must you do? Why do you not examine that as well? Is this thing you are about to do to your benefit? A person ought to examine everything he does twice over. And that way he will be benefited twice over: both for this passing life

and for eternity. Because the person who lives according to the desire of the flesh does not even live this present world properly. Why should I have six illnesses today? Why, at this very moment as I am speaking to you, do I have six illnesses? Why? Because, they say, I took care to feed my flesh. Whatever it asked of me, I gave it. That was the mind I had. And so I suffer in this world too, and I am deprived of all the things I could have enjoyed in due measure, right on into old age — for another twenty years, if God grants me to live, or another thirty. Because we are deprived of this world and of the other one as well. Go into a ward full of diabetics, and your soul will weep: one, two, three per cent have the juvenile kind;

all the rest brought it on themselves with their mouth and with their hands. And still they go on eating; they have tubes put in so that they can keep eating, so as not to fast, so as not to practise self-control. And the result is a disaster — a ruin, as we say. And we are deprived of this world and of the other one too, if we are not careful. These two things, Paul says, are contrary the one to the other. Or, if you like, put it this way: it depends on you, he says, whether you do the works of the flesh or not. "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law." If you are spiritual people, you are not swept away by force, by appetite, by desire. It does not carry you off — not if you are, not any longer, if you are spiritual people. "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like." There are people who have all of these together. Others have a few of them, others have most of them, others fewer. I do not know whether anyone is free of these things, which are the products of sin, the products of the flesh. "Of the which I tell you before—"

and I told you beforehand, that those who practise such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. These two things do not go together. People who are led along behind the flesh cannot have anything to do with the spiritual life. The flesh always asks for the things of this world, corruptible things. And those things cannot survive past the grave. A person ought to be like an emigrant. Someone who wants to emigrate, or to go off to another country, makes sure to exchange his money into the right currency, so that when he gets there he won't go without. If he wants to go, for instance, to Germany, he'll get marks.

If he's going to England, he'll get pounds. If he's going to Canada, or let's say to America, he'll get dollars. If he's going to Turkey, he'll get Turkish banknotes. If he's going to Russia, he'll get roubles, and so on. It's the same with a person: if he really believes that he too is a bird of passage, a swallow that came here for the winter and will fly away in the spring — if he believes that, then he is bound to be careful. He will deny the flesh certain things, but he will sleep without a care. Just try being careless one evening and eating a bit too heavily, because you're in a house where they press you and say, "Oh, but you must have some of this sweet too, Katina made it by hand, and you must try this as well, we made it ourselves." And there you are with a belly swollen round as a ball. Good luck getting to sleep after that. You can't sleep after that. You suffer here for one whole night. You won't sleep.

You'll take something for it, you'll take this and that to help you digest. Some people even put a finger down their throat to make themselves vomit; others end up at the emergency clinic. I don't know whether you noticed on the night of the Resurrection service — read the newspapers — how many thousands of people went to the emergency clinics or to the hospitals, because they had eaten too much. Exactly the same thing happens here. A person has to be careful, has to weigh things up, has to reckon what is really to his benefit. Is it to my benefit to commit fornication? No — I should have my lawful wife, my lawful husband. Is it to my benefit to take another man's wife, or another woman's husband? It is not — that is adultery; I should keep to my own. Is it to my benefit to steal? To murder? To envy? To lose my temper? To do this, and this, and this? No. So then, this is what I must do. And so people who are not careful about the sins of the flesh have a hard life here, and beyond the grave as well.

things are not going to turn out so well for them. You see that everything depends on fasting — that is, on self-control, let me put it that way, since some people take fright at the word "fasting" — on self-control. Self-control is a great thing in every direction, even in things that are lawful. Even in lawful things. In unlawful things it is one hundred percent forbidden, but even in the lawful ones. Have you read what Paul says to the Corinthians? Those who have wives, he says, should live as though they had no wife, and those who have husbands should live as though they had no husband. For the form of this world, he says, is passing away; it is going. What if you had relations a hundred times, or ninety-nine, or fifty — what have you gained? Two hundred times — what have you gained? You have gained nothing; you have come out at a loss, you have not gained. But where is there any philosophy in us, where is there any self-control, where is there anything to add to that?

We cannot even control this stomach of ours. If we have blood pressure trouble, if we have sugar in the blood, if we have those other things, uric acid — I don't know all the names for them — cholesterol and the rest, we get all of that from the belly. Once the eating and drinking stops and is kept to what is necessary, things will come back to their proper footing, they will fall into place. And then a person will not need to burst out and go looking for satisfaction outside. Because the human organism is a furnace that is burning. The more fuel you throw into it, the more it will burn you and burn your children too. But if you deprive it, the fire will die down and burn only as much as is necessary — idling, as we say. Once there was a gentleman who, I believe, had a monk

serving him, and the gentleman said to him, "If you ever come down to the city, you must come to our house." So indeed the Elder came down one day on some business in the city, and he went to the house. And what didn't those people do — they would have slaughtered their own child to look after the man properly. "Have some of this, Elder, have some of this too, Elder, and take a little of this sweet, take some of this dessert," and on and on and on. And the Elder kept saying, "Do me this kindness, Elder, take this too," and out of obedience he ate. That Elder ate that night what he had never eaten in his life — what he wouldn't have eaten in six months. Afterwards he climbed onto his mule, Markos, to set off back to his cell. When he got outside the city there was some water there, and the mule stopped to drink. The mule drank the water, lifted its head and started off again. But the Elder stopped it and said, "Drink a little more, Markos." But Markos stood there and would not drink.

"Please," he says to it, "do me this kindness and take a little more water, Markos." Nothing — Markos just stood there, he would not drink. "Make an act of obedience, Markos," he says, "take a little water." Nothing; Markos would not drink. "Ah, Markos," he says, "it was you who should have gone to that dinner table, not me." Do you understand? Don't let these things seem to you like mere jokes. They do raise a smile — but these animals teach us a great deal, don't they? When the goat is pregnant, does she have anything more to do with the billy goat? She does not, isn't that so? When the ewe is pregnant, does she have anything to do with the ram? No, she does not. And what do we do, what do we get up to? These animals are our teachers. But where is there any self-control? We have made a god of the flesh. Look at what we see in the cinema, what we see on television, what we see in the magazines — they have put everything on display, there is nothing hidden any more, it's all there, nothing is left. And what is the purpose of it?

To inflame the flesh and to teach it things. Teach it what, exactly? What sort of serious things? The very things the cats on the rooftops have known from the day they were born. And they present these things to us as something grand and serious. That is how it is; this is what Paul writes. So if you ever remember, read what I am telling you about: the fifth chapter of Galatians, verse sixteen and following. Now allow me to speak about the other side of it, as this Apostle to the nations, Paul, has set it out. In the same chapter of Galatians, as we said before, at verse twenty-two, he goes on and says the following. Having spoken about the people of the flesh, that they will not inherit the Kingdom of God, he continues and says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,

peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control; against such there is no law. On the one side he told us adultery, fornication, uncleanness, licentiousness, idolatry, envy, murder, drunkenness, carousing and the rest. On this side he speaks of beautiful things. Love — which is missing from the world today; that is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Joy — joy is missing from the world. There is an artificial joy, a joy that is like carob husks: you feel something sweet for a moment, but afterwards you are left with bitterness, with gall. Peace — there is no peace in individuals, nor in the family, nor in the Church, nor in the world. Longsuffering — where is there any longsuffering? People are wild beasts today. Kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control — all of these are fruits of the Holy Spirit. So if you want to have a little joy, you cannot go out to the market and buy it. Joy is not for sale. And if you want to have peace and love, you cannot buy those either. They are produced by the Holy Spirit. If you want to have meekness and longsuffering, you cannot buy them. However much money you have, you cannot say, "I'll go and get myself a few kilos of it." They are not for sale. All these good things, which create a peaceful and holy life here —

a Paradise on earth, that is — all these gifts are produced by the Holy Spirit. So if you want love, my friend, and joy, and goodness, and meekness, and self-control and the rest, then see to it that you find the Holy Spirit, who produces these things. A person is like a bitter orange tree, and you can do with it whatever you like. However much manure you pile on it, however much fertiliser, however much you prune it, however much you water it, it will still produce bitter oranges. But from the moment the bitter orange tree is grafted, it will produce sweet oranges. Who produces them? Does the bitter orange tree produce them? No! It is the graft that produces them. He made a cross-shaped cut in the trunk with a knife, lifted the bark, put the graft inside and bound it up. It was taken up there — and what does it do now? It draws up the bitter juices of the bitter orange tree and transforms them, and turns them into sweet oranges. And from the moment you decide to strip that graft off, to cut that graft away, you will have bitter oranges again. That graft is Christ; this is the grace of the Holy Spirit. If a person is not grafted onto Christ, he does not have the grace of the Holy Spirit. Because it is on Christ's account that the grace of the Holy Spirit is given. If you do not accept Christ, you do not have the Holy Spirit. Let the so-called Pentecostals say that they have the Holy Spirit,

while they reject Christ. Let the Jehovah's Witnesses say that they are illumined, and so on. As long as they reject Christ and accept only the Father, nothing comes of it. Perhaps what I said about the Protestants strikes you as strange, or about the Pentecostals, who are themselves an offshoot of Protestantism. Many people, even among our own, believe that they believe in the divinity of Jesus. They do not believe in it. Someone will say: but they make so much of Christ — and yet they do not accept Christ as God. You will tell me: do they say so? They do not say so. They do not come out and say directly, "We do not accept Christ as God." But they reject him in a roundabout, satanic way. Do you know how?

By not accepting his All-Holy Mother as Theotokos, as God-bearer. If you tell them that Mary is the Theotokos, it is as though they had had an electric shock. "No — she gave birth to Christ." If she gave birth to Christ, then you would say Christotokos, Christ-bearer. But Christ is God. And there they stop and stare at you. They will tell you, yes, he is. Then what should she be called, the one who gave birth to him, since she gave birth to God? Should she not be called Theotokos, God-bearer? No. There they dig in their heels. They do not accept it. And so, since you reject the Theotokos as Theotokos, it follows that for you Christ is not God. See, then, how we believe it. Saint Gregory the Theologian,

in the third century — these offshoots of Protestantism and all these people who have turned up here now, the Pentecostals and the rest, the illumined ones, they did not exist, these people; they have only appeared now, they are a hundred years old. Protestantism, of course, dates from 1519, under Luther, protesting against the Papal Church. Do you know what Saint Gregory the Theologian said in the third century? "Whoever does not regard Mary as Theotokos is cut off from the Godhead." Whoever does not accept the Theotokos as Theotokos, he says, denies the divinity of Jesus. Consequently, those people who make so much of the claim that they believe only in Christ and his Gospel do not believe in Christ as God. So then, for a person to have the grace of the Holy Spirit,

he must believe rightly, he must be baptised, he must have received this gift of the Holy Spirit at his Baptism. Only the Orthodox Church baptises as the Apostles taught and as Christ proclaimed. No one else. All the others are sprinkled — they are sprinkled, they are not baptised, they are not immersed. "I baptise" means I dip, I plunge, I put it right inside — not I sprinkle. The Holy Spirit is in the Church of Christ. In a few days, God willing, we will have the feast of Pentecost again. You know those beautiful prayers of Saint Basil the Great, which the priest or the bishop reads,

calling the flock to kneel, and we bend our knees a second time. And we hear those beautiful prayers, which are prayers to the Holy Spirit, to the third Person, that he would come down as he came down upon the Apostles at the third hour — that he would come down there in the upper room, and he did come down. He is that dove which was in the ark, in the Old Testament, in that church. For the ark was a type — a prefiguring — of this Church. And you remember what happened there. The ark also had a raven inside it. And the raven went out of the ark and did not come back. The dove came back. The raven is the devil. He came out of the ark; Satan came out of the Church. But the Holy Spirit stayed,

the dove — because as she flew about outside she found nothing but filth and stench, nowhere to rest her feet, and being a clean bird, a clean creature, she came back, and the Patriarch Noah put out his hand and took her back inside. So that dove is the grace of the Holy Spirit, which remains in the Church. And all those people who remain in the Church of Christ and are fed as those with Noah were fed in the ark have the grace of the Holy Spirit, and as the offspring of the Holy Spirit they have all these gifts that he lists here: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, meekness, self-control, and the rest. But the person who does not

receive Holy Communion often in church is deprived of all these good things of the Holy Spirit. Saint Basil the Great says that when a person receives Holy Communion he receives twenty-three gifts. And by contrast, the one who does not commune is deprived of those twenty-three gifts. Thirty-two years ago, with God's help, I wrote a book, my first book, called The Antidote to Death. Everything I am telling you is in there — because unfortunately we do not know these things, and we try to become good by sheer force of will. We cannot become good. He is the one who will make us good. We cannot make ourselves good on our own. He will make us good, if we have a relationship with him, and above all communion with him through Holy Communion. Let me give you an example. What did Christ say? I am the vine, you are the branches; whoever abides in the vine bears much fruit, and whoever does not abide in the vine is cut off and thrown into the fire. Have you noticed above the Beautiful Gate, on the icon screen, a vine that stretches from one end, from the left-hand entrance to the sanctuary, all the way to the right,

with its starting point and centre in the mystical vine above the Beautiful Gate? What does that mean? It means what Christ said, which John has written down in his fifteenth chapter. When a shoot remains on the vine, on the stock, what happens? What processes take place? It draws up everything the vine has. That's our prayer. Isn't that so? If it is cut, if we cut it off, it has nothing more to do with the stock, with the vine. What will happen? It will dry up and we will put it in the still. Those are the people who are in communion with Christ, who remain with him — and those others are the ones who do not commune. Those who do not commune are walking cemeteries. Spiritually dried up. In contrast to the others, who are spiritually united with Christ.

The shoot — what will it draw from the vine? It will draw its sap, won't it? It will draw sugar, it will draw alcohol; whatever is inside the vine will come out here as fruit. This grape, this cluster, this bunch, these berries — where do they get their nourishment from, what do they draw it from? From the main trunk. There is no sugar inside the grape by itself, there is no alcohol inside the grape by itself. And the grape, if you would like to know it from another angle as well, falls short of mother's milk in only one element. If we take it that mother's milk has sixteen elements, the grape has fifteen. And you see the very thing that Christ uses to present himself: the vine, the vine stock. And if you have ever seen it — I have found an icon like this, which is in the chapel of the Holy Burning Bush at Mount Sinai. There you see Christ as a trunk, putting out the Apostles; all the Apostles are like branches above, with Christ as their base. Just as there is another one, from the root of Jesse. Jesse is below and a vine stock comes up out of him, with branches, with Christ, with the Most Holy Theotokos, with the Apostles. He who eats my flesh, he says — not "he who has eaten," but he who goes on eating my flesh — and drinks my blood, abides in me and I in him. We are united. And as long as I am connected to the current, I will have light,

I will have warmth, I will have power, I will have energy. But this poor thing here is not connected to the light. And you see, it sits there rusty and dark. Isn't that so? That first one is the Christian who receives Holy Communion, and this second one is the Christian who does not. Because the one is connected to the light, and the other is not connected to the light. And we go to church and we make fun of the others who commune. "When did he ever fast? He hasn't got a wife, she hasn't got a husband." Instead of going up to him and asking him, "Brother, how do you manage to commune so often?" — and learning the recipe and putting it into practice — instead of that, we watch from a distance and pour out our poison. Because for the people who want to stay in communion — because when a person remains in communion with Christ, he also has the good results that come from it.

...in the power and the grace of Jesus. His nous, his spiritual intellect, is different, and his heart in turn is different, and his feet no longer walk down the paths of sin, and his eyes are lowered in humility, and his hands reach into his own pocket and give to someone else, instead of stealing from others to fill his own. A person does many things, but it is Christ who will do these things. Why would I be the one doing them? Read, if you like, the Epistle to the Romans, the seventh chapter. Do you know what it says? "If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness." If Christ is inside you, the flesh cannot sin. So do not go looking for virtues, not in yourselves and not in other people.

...I want to find that you have love here. Go and buy two kilos of love, then. What love? Where are they going to find it? I want you to have peace in the house. Where are they going to find peace? Christ is our peace. Christ is the one who says, "My peace I give to you, not as the world gives." Where is he going to find Christ, and where has he ever seen Christ — the man who turns up once in a blue moon, once in years and years, on Great Saturday or Great Thursday, and after that it is all the same to him until he drifts back to church again? Where is he to find these things, when he has no such contact and does not have the Holy Spirit? They are fruits, then; and since they are fruits, our business is not to go hunting for joy, or to go hunting for love, or to go hunting for peace. Our business is to find that tree which is called the Holy Spirit,

and then we have everything it produces, automatically. When I want oranges, I am not going to go to a wild olive tree; if I want oranges, I will go to an orange tree. So if I want to find calm, if I want the strength to forgive, if I want the strength to practise self-control, the strength to govern my tongue and so on, then I have to go and find Christ, who will give me the grace of the Holy Spirit through His Body and His Blood, so that we have the power to do all these things without exhausting ourselves. I do not know whether you noticed one phrase there: "Against such things there is no law." Back then, keeping the law took sheer force. Do you know what a person is like without Christ? Like a trolleybus with its pole off the wire. Tell it to move. Get down and push it, and see if it moves. A hundred of us could get behind it. At the very most we would shift it a metre and then give up. But once that pole catches hold of the wire above, with a penny's worth of current...

...it runs as if it were going downhill. That is what the grace of the Holy Spirit is. This is Christ, this is the Holy Spirit. This is the power. It makes a person formidable, able to do what he could not do before. Things he was sneering at yesterday, things he was calling impossible yesterday, you see him doing today, and doing them scrupulously, and teaching them to others as well. And things he loved yesterday, about which he said, "I will take these with me to the grave, I cannot cut them out, nobody cuts these out, they are only natural" — now he has cut them off and he warns others to watch out for them. That is how it works. So I ask myself, and you ask yourselves: what condition are we in? Are we spiritual people? Unfortunately not; we are carnal. And are we going to change? No. That is the sorrowful thing. The problem is not what I am like. The problem is that we could become something, and we do not.

Go up to people and talk with them for years on end. They will give you the same stock answer: that they are sinners. And if you meet them again next year, they will tell you exactly the same thing. Then why is God leaving you in this world? Is it not so that you may stop being a sinner, so that you may change your life, so that you may put in order the things you have never put in order? Why do you dig in? Why do you not make use of the kindness and the longsuffering of God, which is leading you to metanoia, to repentance? That is where we stand. A Jewish man once put a question to Saint Epiphanios the Great. He said, what is it that makes it so hard for me to become a Christian? Your own will, he told him. If you want it, nothing at all is stopping you. But if you do not want it, no one on earth can help you. The key is in a person's own hand, my beloved. Have you read what it says in the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation?

The keys of the Abyss, Christ has taken with Him. The keys of Hell, Christ has taken with Him. But the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven He left with Peter, He left here in the world. So why are you the one hunting about for keys to get into Hell, when you will not pick up the key of repentance, of turning back, and it is free? It costs no money at all. He does not ask you to dig out the gold you have hidden away. Bring me your filth, He says, bring me your sins, from your swaddling clothes onward, and I will exchange all of it for the Kingdom of Heaven, and I will give you the grace to be able to do the things you cannot do today. And still a person will not do it, he keeps on going. He asks, for instance, am I on the right road for Ampelokipoi? What are you saying, man, you are heading for Pyrgos Vasilissis. You have gone right past it; this is not the road at all, no.

You have gone much too far. I have to turn back here, yes. And then off he goes again down the same road, heading for Pyrgos Vasilissis. That is what we are like. You cannot admit that you are a sinner and then carry on in the sin. You are under obligation to change, since Christ is waiting for you and gives you every right to come. So when you go home, take a good look at this plan of yours.

Sit yourself down, open your book, open your New Testament. Read the fifth chapter of Galatians, and write down on a piece of paper the virtues you are supposed to have. Then look: do you have them? You do not? Your knees ought to give way under you. You have no destination. What is it all for — to eat by the bowlful and stuff yourself with meat and with God's calves? Is that what you are here for? Animals do that as well. There is no difference at all between us and the animals in the way we spend ourselves here. Have we not got double refrigerators with double doors? Is that the whole thing? Is that what a human being is for? A human being is here to be shaped, to be made ready for what comes after.

If we had a lasting city here, we might well settle down and stay here. But it is the city that is to come that we are seeking. We are not residents of this earth; we are tenants of this earth. And at whatever hour He pleases, He puts us out. Is this house ours? Did we come here to stay? We came here to set foot for a moment and then to go. This earth of ours is going to pass away. A new earth and a new heaven, where righteousness will dwell. Have you ever read it? Have you ever opened it up? Open, if you would, the twenty-first chapter of the Apocalypse — it is nearly the last chapter, the first of the last ones. What did He show to John? "And I saw a new heaven" — kainos, new in kind, made new, not simply recent — "and a new earth," again new in that same sense, "for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away." And along with them, so has this thing we call our civilisation. "And the sea was no more."

He says it, and He does not tell lies. Nobody has ever managed to correct it or to twist its meaning. People keep trying to correct it, but it cannot be done; this truth stands through the centuries, written down. I am afraid of these things, when I look at myself and see that I have no love. And I do not mean loving the person I sin together with, the one I could go and throw myself off the Acropolis with tomorrow. Not that kind of love, the love of the flesh — spiritual love. When I say I love the other person, it means I sacrifice myself for the other person. And not only for the one who loves me, but even for my enemy.

What is mine is his as well. My wallet is his as well. Whatever strength I have is his as well. Because being a Christian means this: I put myself at the service of the other person. And what do we do? We put ourselves at the service of our own circle, the ones we eat with, the ones we sin with, and so on. Everybody else we watch from a distance. We have put up railings, we have set broken glass along the top of the walls, and a shotgun and a dog outside, so that nobody gets in. Where is our love? There is none. And joy: when I look at myself, I have no joy — only anxiety, only distress, day and night. And over the shabbiest things this world has to offer. A person ought to be full of joy. As the saying goes, I came here only for a season. What did Job say, when we were speaking of him? He said: naked I came, naked I go. Why should we be distressed, wife? Blessed be the name of the Lord. Yes, that is roughly how we ought to be thinking. So let us hold on to something of all this for tonight.

ασβέστιο, λίγο σίδερο, λίγο νερό, λίγο φώσφορο, τέτοια πραγματάκια είμαστε. Πού θα είναι αυτά; Στη γη της ψήσεως. Θα τα πληρώσουμε. Από τι τρέφεσαι; Από τις μπελιντάνες, από τις μάμιες, από τα κολοκυθάκια, από τα ψάρια, από τα κρέατα που τρέφονται με χόρτα κλπ. Τι γη είναι, πού δου είναι. Κατά συνέπεια δεν δικαιούται σε τίποτα να πάρει. Το σώμα λοιπόν θα πει, εγώ θα σε εγκαταλείψω, πήγαινε όπου θέλεις, αλλά όπως με έκανες που λέω πάω, φουσιαστό. Αυτό είναι το θέμα. Ποιος σου είπε να μ' ακούς; Αυτό θα πει αύριο. Εγώ ήμουν άλογον, εσύ ήσουν λογικός, γιατί με άκουσες; Εγώ σου φταίω;
