Summary
Turning from the road to Emmaus to another of the paschal appearances, Dimitrios Panagopoulos considers the words “He appeared to Simon” (Luke 24:34). Christ sought out Peter to restore a disciple who had placed himself outside the circle of the Apostles, which is why the angel said “tell His disciples and Peter.” God does not see a criminal but a sick man whose illness is sin, and He works for the single soul. Judas and Peter both refused their Lord, but Judas from cold self-interest and Peter from an unreasoning self-confidence: Christ had prayed not that Peter would avoid the fall but that his faith would not fail, and charged him afterward to strengthen his brethren (Luke 22:31-32). Grace withdraws so that self-reliance is broken, and Peter's repentance lasted his whole life.
