Summary
The lecturer urges listeners to turn the lessons they have heard into a concrete revision of their lives, despite the power of sinful habits. This life is the appointed time for repentance, because after death the opportunity for confession, restitution, and spiritual struggle has ended. Every confessed and repented sin can be forgiven, but unrepented, unconfessed sin, hatred, refusal to forgive, and postponed conversion leave the heart hardened.

This evening I would like to say something that might serve as the crowning conclusion to all these talks which the good God has enabled us to give during this time we have spent together. Much has been heard and much has been said in the twenty-four talks we have given here, each lasting an hour, with one or two lasting an hour and a half. It is true that many people, as they themselves have admitted—and their words have reached my ears—have discovered many faults in their lives. Some have even made the decision
to correct themselves in some measure and to follow a different path: one that does not prevent them from enjoying all the lawful things God has provided, but leads them to restrict what is unlawful, if not abandon it altogether.
As you know, this is somewhat difficult. Once a person becomes accustomed to certain things, they form a habit, a second nature, and it is difficult to cast them off. Yet people admit that they have either begun to reassess their lives or will do so as much as they can. This...
shows that... or rather, it proves that what was said did not fall into a void. Some, of course, who had already been living a religious life for some time, did not need all that was said because they knew it already. The one who repeated it certainly grew tired, but the one who heard it again was edified. After all, that is what Paul says. Others have been deeply stirred and are considering how, at last, to put right certain things they have not done well until now. It is only natural that a person, influenced both by the evil spirit and by a certain ignorance,
should try, on his own, to find some way of settling these matters. In spiritual life, however, I would like us to understand that there is a law called the law of equivalent reparation. This means that a person must correct the wrong in precisely the sphere and manner in which he committed it. You remember how the elderly father of the Prodigal Son waited for his son and saw him, as the Gospel says, “while he was still a long way off.” To see someone far down a road and recognize that he is returning, you must always be looking in that direction. Otherwise, he will come right up beside you before you see him.
The father looked nowhere else. Whether he stood at a crossroads or along the road, he watched only the direction from which he expected his son; that alone held his attention. You might ask, “If he is coming from this direction, why do you keep looking there?” Because that is the way he left, and that is the way he will return. Some people do not act like this in spiritual matters. They steal from someone, but instead of returning what they stole, they give alms from the stolen property. This is not the proper course. You wronged the person from whom you stole. That property represents another person’s sweat and blood, not your own sweat or labor. You cannot dispose of it; you have no right whatsoever to dispose of what belongs to someone else.
Did God appoint you or me to manage another person’s property? Whatever that person does with what belongs to him, he will answer to God for it. But how can you or I presume to dispose of it? Some say, “I steal from the state; I take from the state, from some wealthy public agency, and so forth.” Have you received some commandment authorizing you to bleed those who have possessions? God said, “You shall not steal.” He did not say, “Do not steal from the poor, but you may steal from the rich.” He did not say, “Do not steal from individuals, but you may steal from the public treasury.” He said nothing of the sort. “You shall not steal.” Who made you judge of when theft is justified? Whatever your ideology, you stole. You were led astray, you did not understand, you were in need—whatever the reason may have been, there are ways to deal with such things. But you fell into sin. Now that you have learned and heard the truth, and since God has left you alive and has not taken your life or cut its thread—since He has
waited for you even though you went your own way—you must now put this matter right. You must put it right both in word and in deed, because when sin is committed, it is committed both against Heaven and against one’s fellow human being. Man stands at a vital meeting point: whatever good he does has an effect in Heaven and upon his neighbor, and whatever evil he does likewise has an effect in Heaven and upon his neighbor. He is therefore called to set both matters right. Toward his neighbor, he must repair the harm and make amends for the moral injury, or whatever else he may have done, by asking forgiveness and, if material possessions are involved, returning them. From God, whose commandment he transgressed, he must ask forgiveness. Then the person is restored. If he does not act in this way, then whatever
else he may do, he is deceiving himself, and on that Day he will discover that he has been deceived. All sins, then, are set right through equivalent reparation, as we have said. A person must take this to heart and understand it. We must also know that sins do not grow old. Sins do not rust, and sins do not wear away, so that we might say, “Ah, so many years have passed now.” Satan keeps the accusation in his hand and will present it as fresh as the day it happened. For even if the Lord God wished to overlook it, He would say, “I cannot do so. Here stands the witness for the prosecution, presenting the charge and telling Me that I am just. How can I commit injustice and wrong him?”
“He served me and listened to me. How can You take him away from me? You have no right to take him if You wish to be called just.” God cannot resort to such trickery or petty cunning. Therefore, since God gives a person this opportunity, he must make use of it—of this advantage God grants him. For if he fails to use it and the curtain falls, as it so often does when we least expect it, we will find ourselves in a terrible predicament. If, then, we refuse to act as we should and put right our weaknesses and sins,
God alone will be proved righteous: “That You may be justified in Your words and prevail when You are judged.” Man, however, will find himself on the opposite shore because he refused to use the means God had shown him. And notice this strange thing—you yourselves will surely have observed it. In everything concerning his body, his needs, his illness, his education, and so forth, a person acts with minute care. But when it comes to matters of the soul and of sin, he devises his own regimen and looks for ways to justify his sins. You heard last night, when we concluded the talk with that incident from the life of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, how, when he was young, he had become responsible—unintentionally, one might say, though I do not know, perhaps it truly was unintentional—for causing a poor woman to mourn
for years over a little pig and its young. When he found himself in prison, what did the Angel tell him? “Everything I had,” he said, “I sold and gave to the poor.” “You still owe the full price of the animal,” the Angel told him. “What you gave away was almsgiving, but this remains a debt you must repay.” Therefore, no matter how much almsgiving you give or what you build—churches, hospitals, orphanages—or how many people you save physically, do whatever you wish: you will not cover even one sin. You will still owe that debt. Even if God gave a man a thousand years of life and he lived on roots for all those thousand years, he could not blot out a single sin. My beloved, sins are not blotted out by human goodness.
Sin concerns God, and the offense is against God. It cannot be paid for with human material things. Many people do numerous good deeds, especially once they repent, or even before they repent. You may see a man or woman living unlawfully and committing adultery, yet they would give another person the last morsel from their mouth, give away their coat, stand beside someone in need, or even go into debt for that person. Yet the sin remains sin, because their conscience cries out from within. That is why people seek to perform corresponding good works in order to cover their sins. But those works do not cover them; their feet always remain exposed. Christ alone blots out sins. No one else can blot out sins. That is why the Gospel states clearly:
“The blood of Jesus Christ is what cleanses us from every sin.” The blood of Jesus Christ. That is also why we always say, “for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” Christ has His own particular way and His own medicines. Just as there are medical specialists for every illness, departments in hospitals, and specific medicines for each disease, so it is with spiritual matters. Matters of sin cannot be set right through material things or human material acts. For, I repeat, sin reaches Heaven and offends the justice of God. A person has blasphemed God. What will he do now—give alms? How could that settle it?
Forgiveness must be sought from the person I robbed. As I said, suppose I wronged one particular person. What must I do? Should I not return what I took and ask his forgiveness? Or will I give it to someone else and imagine that this covers my theft? How could that possibly work? It makes no sense at all, still less in spiritual matters. So I want all these words that we have been granted to share with one another—words that may have struck home in someone—to bear fruit. Perhaps something was not meant for me but for my neighbor, or not for my neighbor but for me, or for someone else. All of us have found something and seen ourselves more clearly, and in some measure we have recognized that we are spiritually ill. Perhaps I am not gravely ill; perhaps my illness is slight.
There is a beautiful resurrectional hymn in the funeral service that speaks of “even the stains of transgressions—the stains of transgressions.” You cannot go to your wedding crowning bearing stains, wearing a bridal garment that is spattered and soiled. It must be radiant and spotless; that is how it must be. How can the Bridegroom stand beside you while your bridal garment is stained? “Even the stains of transgressions.” “Have compassion on Your creature, O Master.” These words almost seek to compel God: “Do not forget that I am Your creature, Your creation; have compassion on me.” But if you have no compassion for your own soul, how can I have compassion on you? How many opportunities I gave you, and how many things I told you!
You refused to make good use of the time and circumstances. How am I to blame? How can I act now merely when you choose, rather than when you ought? And yet, I repeat, there are many people who have still not grasped this.
Saint Basil the Great offers a beautiful image, presenting this world as a marketplace—or, in simpler terms, as a fair where people come to trade, buying and selling, earning money, and conducting business. This is precisely how Saint Basil the Great views this life, and he gives the following counsel: “No one conducts business after the fair has ended.” Once the marketplace has closed, once the gathering and the fair are over, there can be no more buying or selling; you can no longer trade. “Nor does anyone return after the contests and receive a crown.” Once the contest in the stadium has ended, no one can return to compete and be crowned. “Nor does anyone perform deeds of valor after the wars are over.”
Where is the battle? It is here and now that you must struggle; now you must show courage so that you may receive the crown. Therefore, O man, this is your opportunity. Now is the acceptable time; now is the time for metanoia, for repentance. In this world there is grace; in the world to come there is justice. A person cannot be helped there. Of course, some help is received through memorial services, offerings, and the sacrifices made by the Orthodox Church. But if grave burdens and serious sins are involved—sins that a person deliberately avoided confessing in this world—I do not believe he will succeed in finding any mercy there.
Let us therefore admit that, being human, we sin and are sinners. For a person, recognizing this is a great achievement. Do you know what Saint Isaac the Syrian says? “Blessed is the man who has come to know his own weakness”—the one who admits that he is sick, that he is a sinner. You know what happens to people who do not realize they are ill. For example, my blood sugar had reached three hundred and I did not know it, so I could not take precautions. I might have departed this world in a fraction of a second if one more thing had happened—I do not know what—because I was unaware of it. But from the moment I recognized and discovered that I was diabetic, I began taking precautions, and I have now been kept alive for nearly twenty years. So it is with the soul. You have recognized and discovered that
You have recognized and discovered that something is going on beneath the surface of your soul—some injustice, some sin that God does not approve of. See to it that you put it right. Seek healing, and this healing does not come through human means. When someone is sick, he runs to the doctor, goes to the hospital, and takes medicine. Christ likewise has hospitals, physicians, and medicines for the spiritual needs of man. Therefore, if anyone has an unsettled account with the justice of God, with the Gospel, and so forth, let him not try to settle it in his own way. It cannot be settled that way. He will only make matters more tangled; he will never resolve them. There is only One who can resolve them: Christ.
Alexander the Great, who in the pagan world was a type—a foreshadowing—of Christ, came before the Gordian knot. Unable to untie it, he drew his sword and said, “What cannot be untied is cut,” and he cut through it. So it is with Christ. Christ cuts away man’s sin and helps him. But man must desire this. He does not need a policeman to come to his house and drag him to Church. He does not need a policeman to take him away to make his confession. Nor does he need someone to force him to return what he acquired unjustly and ask forgiveness from those he has wronged or from those who are weak. We have an obligation to do these things. Christ asks many things of us, but they cause no pain once our egoism is set aside.
What makes everything difficult is man’s egoism. Many people will not even discuss the matter. “I know already.” Really? Are you so exceedingly wise, and we never knew it? Who are you—Socrates? Even Socrates said, “I know nothing.” Do you know more than Socrates? Woe to the person who refuses counsel. Woe to him. My dear friends, God alone has no need of counsel; no one else can claim that. All the rest of us need counsel, whether it comes through an ant, a little child, or even a wall. We need to ask, because God condescends to speak to us through such things. One Father of the Church, Antiochus of Galatia, says: “To seek counsel in every matter is good and pleasing to God.” Ask about everything. Perhaps you have made a mistake. You are human, after all.
You think that what you are doing is good—you think so—but you never asked anyone. Your own coinage is counterfeit: “I think,” “this is what I think.” Stop minting your own coins; they are not accepted in God’s bank. One woman thought she would adopt a child, raise him, make him a Christian, educate him, and so forth. Instead, he struck her over the head with a slipper, and she even lost her faith.
“Cursed be the hour when I went and took him in!” Why did this happen? Because she did not seek counsel. Did she consult the great Counselor? Did she kneel and say, “My God, You did not give me children. Perhaps You knew that You should not give me any. How can I now decide on my own to become a father or a mother? Might something even worse befall me?” She did not ask. Today she is losing her soul. “To seek counsel,” he says, “in every matter is good and pleasing to God, for there is no one who does not need a counselor.” There is no such person.
Everyone needs to listen, except God alone. God has no need of anything; He alone is all-wise and knows everything. Yet many people, in their egoism, will not even discuss religious matters. Sit down, my good man; no one is taking your wallet. Listen to another point of view. Perhaps you will be benefited. “No, I know already.” And so he shuts the door himself. If you shut the door yourself, neither God nor the Holy Trinity can help you. There is a beautiful passage in the third chapter of the Apocalypse: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears and opens, I will come in to him.” I am knocking from outside, He says. And I want you to know that the door of the human heart has no handle on the outside that someone can grasp to open it. The handle is on the inside.
Christ knocks from outside, but people do not want to hear Him. They are indifferent. Do you remember the story I told you one evening, which made everyone laugh? What did the little boy say? “Mama, will you go to Paradise?” “My child, I am struggling, and if He wills, He will take me there. I want to go.” “And will I go too, Mama? Will we go together? But will Papa come?” “Papa will not come, my child. Papa has the shop; he is too busy to come.” Do you understand? Do you remember how everyone laughed? Yet this is how it is. Many have their shop; many are occupied with a woman or a man, with gambling cards, horses, their belly, or their career. People are very, very busy, but they give no attention to the one serious matter for which God grants them time in this world. My dear friends, reflect deeply on what I am about to tell you.
We act fierce and pretend that we know everything, that we are advanced, that we have killed and buried God, and that nothing exists beyond this life. I would not wish even a fever of 37.1 degrees upon you for two or three days—nothing more. Just run a slight fever for a few days, begin to suspect that it might be cancer, and then come and tell me how things stand. You will see how quickly everything else is forgotten. You will see beds torn apart, adulteries ended, fornication stopped, and mothers returning to their children and husbands. Then you will see stolen things returned. You will see it. In ninety-five percent of cases, it brings good results. But God does not compel anyone. God wants man to come freely. If we were dealing with an animal, we would use a stick...
We put the animal between the shafts. If it turns this way, we strike it; if it turns the other way, we strike it again and force it onward. But are you a beast, for God to treat you like that? What are we—brute animals? We are free, yet we misuse our freedom. We misuse it.
If He were merely human, He might say to us, “Now that things have become difficult, now that you have lost your health and this misfortune has befallen you, you come to Me? Get out of here.” But He does not say that. He does not. Such is His goodness. Still, let us make haste, even at the last moment, to do something. Pay attention to this, because before we become corrupted in the mind...
Forgive me—before we become corrupted in the flesh, we are first corrupted in the mind. The flesh is directed by the nous, the spiritual intellect. When the nous becomes corrupted because the heart is corrupt, we see this triangle: the corrupt heart corrupts the nous, and then the nous sets everything else in motion. We must therefore change our way of thinking, so that the mind ceases to be corrupted. Saint Isaac the Syrian says in this connection: “In our understanding we become better, and in our understanding we become depraved.” Everything begins there. So let the mind be positive and practical. What does this God ask of me? Let us suppose, as you say, that nothing exists. Fine—nothing exists. But if there is even one chance in a billion that He does exist, what have you gained by refusing to accept Him and believe in Him, and what have I lost by accepting Him?
My child, take a pencil and paper—or take a computer—and sit down and work out the account for me. What have you gained by refusing to accept Him and insisting that He does not exist? Indeed, you insist on having an ape for your father. This is a serious matter.
We are prepared to call you an ape or a monkey. We have come to that, simply so that we need not acknowledge Christ as our Creator. We accept that we descend from a lower animal—the ape is lower. But why must man be the offspring of the ape? Why could the ape not be a caricature of man? No—Christ must be removed from the picture. With this stubbornness of yours, you will cast yourself into torment, all by yourself.
But think about it logically, I repeat. You call me mad: “Panagopoulos is mad.” You never stop calling me mad. Very well. You are the rational one, then. What is the difference between us? Tell me. Here we both stand—and, strangely enough, suppose there really is something beyond this life. What have you gained by not believing? And what have I lost by believing? I have slept more peacefully; I have not gone to prison; nor has another woman’s husband gutted me because I climbed into her bed. What more have you gained? Consider the matter practically, as a shopkeeper would, weighing profit and loss. Am I making such a great mistake? If, then, we admit that as human beings we truly are sick, it is only practical to make use of the medicines, the place, and the manner of treatment. Christ brought the man who fell among thieves to the inn, entrusted him to the innkeeper, and there provided the proper medicines for the treatment of his sickness and his wounds.
If we acknowledge the truth—that Satan is the chief robber, with his minions as the other thieves, and that through the sins he suggests he has inflicted wounds upon the human soul—then we need an inn, whether we wish to admit it or not. The inn is the Church, the innkeeper is the priest, and the medicines are found within the Church. Outside the Church, no wound inflicted by those robbers, by Satan, can be healed. Nothing is healed. As I said earlier, do whatever you think best, do whatever you want: you will not erase a single sin, because Satan will always raise it as an accusation against you.
Someone may ask, “Then are all sins forgiven, put right, and erased?” All of them, except the sin for which there is no metanoia—no repentance—and no confession. That sin will remain. Whatever sin we may commit, however great its quantity or evil its quality, when a person repents and confesses it to the proper person appointed by Christ in His Church, he need fear nothing. But if he keeps some sin hidden, it will remain. If he does not repent of something he has done...
We encounter such cases too. Some people ask whether it is possible for someone to have done something—something that can be proven—and still not repent. Of course it is; many do exactly that. They come to their spiritual father, who tells them, “You must forgive and love, even if you suffer material and personal loss, so that Satan may be put to shame and love may prevail.” They answer, “Ah, Father, if you were in my place, you would not forgive either.” There are people who have declared that they do not want certain persons to come even to their funeral or grave, and never want to see them again. There are parents who have cursed their children and refuse to see them. There are brothers and sisters whose malice and hatred endure even beyond the grave. Such cases exist. And so the matter remains unresolved.
It cannot be resolved, because God listens to man only if man listens to God. It is a matter of hearing in return for hearing: listen to Me, and I will listen to you; pay attention to what I say, and I will pay attention to you. If you do not hear Me, I will not hear you. If you disregard what I say and take no account of Me, I will take no account of you. Woe to the person entangled in such a state if death comes unexpectedly. We should also understand that there is another kind of person: one who admits that he has erred, done evil, behaved badly, and acted wrongly. He acknowledges this intellectually, but postpones confession.
He admits it, yes, but delays putting matters right. And do you know what this delay does? Delay hardens a person. The thief on Christ’s left shows this especially clearly. What was he waiting for—a pension? Could he not also have said, as the other thief did, “Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom”? The other thief even spoke to him and preached to him there upon the Cross: “Why are you shouting and blaspheming? We are suffering justly; we deserve to have been placed upon the cross.” Yet even then he would not repent. Man becomes hardened. As I told you one evening, a former leader of our country, a very prominent man, once went to take possession of the Isthmus during Great Lent...
Food was offered there. Perhaps today, Mr. President, they would have served something suitable for the fast. But he responded harshly. “What is all this?” he asked. “But, Mr. President, it is a fasting day.” “I do not fast for a Jew,” he said, speaking that way about our Christ. A short time later, he became deathly ill. I have seen people receive Holy Communion at the last moment of life. Yet as this man was breathing his last, the priest entered the room carrying the Holy Chalice. Somehow he found the strength to rise and cry, “Out, Nazarene!” And the Nazarene departed. I do not know how things stand with him there now, because if you cast Christ out here, He will cast you out there, outside what belongs to Him. For He says, “I stand at the door and knock.”
“If anyone hears and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” So if a person is not reconciled with Christ here, does not become one with Christ here, does not welcome Christ into his own home and enter into Christ’s embrace, what does he expect to receive in the world above? It is here that this kinship must be formed; it is here that this communion must begin. This is why that encounter takes place before the Beautiful Gate, and why the gate is called Beautiful: because from there, after being reconciled with God, a person enters the Kingdom of Heaven. If, then, a person refuses to understand this and refuses to make peace with God in this world, he is no longer an heir. I do not know whether you pay attention to what takes place in the Orthodox Church. After the faithful have received Holy Communion, the priest holds the Holy Chalice...
with Christ in his hands and says, “Save, O God, Your people, and bless Your inheritance.” Who are that inheritance? Those who have received Holy Communion. They have become brothers and sisters of Christ and, by extension, children of God. But those who merely come to receive antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy—or who have eaten breakfast and then come for antidoron, sometimes even taking it from the candle stand, are not thereby brothers and sisters of Christ or heirs. Those who commune—for communion means participation and fellowship—those who abide in the vine bear much fruit. But those who refuse to draw life from the vine, which is Christ—“I am the vine; you are the branches”—naturally have no life in themselves. Everything else is sophistry of our own invention, religions of our own making that cannot endure.
The faith of Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified One, is one: the Orthodox faith, which speaks the truth and leads a person rightly, if he is willing to act. But if a person begins inserting his own reasoning into it, he loses his way. The currents sweep him away, and he ends up somewhere altogether different. Ask sailors: although they have set the stern in one direction and the wind is filling the sails toward their destination, they may find themselves far off course because there are currents underneath, dragging them elsewhere. So it is with sin; so it is with egotism; so it is with human reasoning that drags a person away. And now, as the conclusion to all these talks, I would like to tell you this: all of us have a place in the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no one who does not have a place in the Kingdom of Heaven, provided he is willing to take the key and enter the room God prepared for him from the foundation of the world.
The key is Christ. There is one door, the one I spoke of earlier—the one and only door. There is no other way. All the other roads lead to the precipice, while the one remaining road leads to the Saint, as Saint Luke once told my father in a difficult situation. The same is true here. Some people ask, “Can everyone enter?” Everyone—even the greatest sinners. Someone once asked how wide the opening was that appeared in the veil of Solomon’s Temple. For when our Christ, upon the Cross at Golgotha, said, “It is finished,” the first miracle that occurred was that the veil of the Temple, inside the Temple and within the city—while Christ was being crucified outside the city—was torn from top to bottom. This was a sign that He had paid the debt of our sins.
He made peace between God and man, and what had been closed—the barrier of sin, which kept us from communion with God because of human sin—was opened, and now we can commune with God. Our meeting and reconciliation take place at the Beautiful Gate: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us,” and from there we go within. Some people ask, “How wide was that opening, that tear? How great was it?” And a discerning spiritual father answered, “It was so great that even the most sinful person in the world could pass through it.” It was not opened only for certain people to pass through. It was made wide enough for the greatest sinner in the world to fit through. Therefore, never listen...
to Satan whispering to you, “You cannot be saved after all that you have done.” It is nothing. Everything can be wiped away with a single stroke, provided you follow the lawful path, provided you understand that, as a human being, you sin and therefore must make use of the hospital. When I went to Toronto, I met a group of people—two of whom had even turned to Protestantism—because they could find no hesychia, peace, or calm in the Orthodox churches. There were arguments, quarrels, and insults inside the Church.
That drove them elsewhere in search of peace and calm. Of course, I answered those gentlemen, and I would like to say the same thing to all of us. When you enter the Church, you should not expect to meet saints. The Saints are on the iconostasis, in the icons. Down below are the rest of us, beginning...
with the bishop or the priest, the chanters, those who serve and work in the Church, the parish council, and so forth. You must understand that all these people are sick, and that they come to the Church as patients seeking healing. If we were not sick, we would have no need of the hospital. When you go to a hospital, do you find healthy people? Or do you hear someone groaning here and another crying, “Oh, mother!” over there...
with severed limbs and all manner of suffering? Someone says, “I am about to lose my mind in this place.” Yet you remain there. Even if they place you on a makeshift bed in the corridor, as happens in our hospitals in Athens where there are only a handful of beds, you stay. Why do you stay? Because a cart threw you off and broke your leg, or because you suffered a stroke or some other illness. You remain there—but here, in the Church, you leave? You want to find perfect calm? You are going to a hospital. Everyone there is sick, beginning with the people serving within the holy altar. Do not think otherwise. Each one of us has weaknesses. So do not expect to find angels. You will find angels in Heaven. Here you will find fellow patients. Are you yourself entirely free from the passions in your dealings with others? May it be so—but even then, you must bear with the other person. That is how it is!
Perfect quiet exists only in cemeteries. Here we are alive, and a little child will speak. But because we ourselves have no children, we give no thought to someone else, or to the mother who brings one, two, or three children in a row—one runs off while she holds on to another. Someone wants his peace and quiet. But what are the children supposed to do? We fail to consider certain things, and Satan exploits this. Know this as well: from the moment the Orthodox Church ceases to have such struggles, it will no longer be Orthodoxy. It will have falsehood, as all the so-called churches do. Go to the Protestants, go to the Catholics, go to the Jews, go wherever you like: there is the stillness of death. Are they saints? No, they are not. All the devils from across America and Canada come to the Orthodox churches. The others they already have...
Never let this enter your mind. Wherever you see noise, resistance, feverish activity, or turmoil, know that something right is happening there and Satan is attacking it. Will you leave the Church because a little child is talking, because a woman was inattentive, or because someone beside you is showing off his fine chanting voice? We have that too. “Listen to him showing off his voice,” the people beside us were saying yesterday. No. We will make use of everything so that we may remain, struggle, and pray for them as well. These difficulties help to heal us. If there is no resistance, there is no action. Is that not so? If there is no opponent, whom will you wrestle? Many people want Christ to take the devil away so that they may sleep undisturbed, because, they say, he falls upon them and causes nightmares. So Christ should take the devil away too, put us inside a glass cage, place us in a little glass incubator...
and say, “Well done, you saints! Come and let Me crown you.” But where did you struggle? What did you do? We have not understood these matters correctly, and many people remain outside the Church because of this. Others do not come to church, do not confess, and do not receive Holy Communion because of the misconduct of priests. They want to find saintly priests before they will receive Holy Communion, yet the priests they imagine to be saintly may have no relationship with God at all. God may have rejected them. But God has not arranged things according to such thinking. He has arranged them differently: “He does not ordain all, but He works through all.” Some people say, “I will not even receive antidoron from his hand. Unless that priest leaves the parish, I will not go to church.” Are you serious? You do not know or understand precisely how the matter stands. Saint Isidore of Pelusium, a man who, as we were saying today...
spoke with a fiery tongue against everyone—bishops, priests, governments, all of them—do you know what he says about this matter? Listen. He was no weakling, no compromised ecumenist, as people say: “I am an ecumenist, paid by Iakovos, bought and paid for, and I have come here to speak.” Saint Isidore was nothing of the kind. Do you know what he says? Listen: “The one who receives suffers no harm whatsoever.” The person who goes forward to receive is harmed in no way, “even if the one who gives is unworthy”—even if the priest offering it is unworthy. “Nor are the immaculate Mysteries defiled.” The immaculate Mysteries are never polluted, “even if the priest”—notice this detail—“surpasses all people in wickedness.”
That is, even if he is the worst person in the world, nothing he gives you is defiled. Whatever Mystery he celebrates—whether metanoia and confession, Holy Unction, the blessing of water, Holy Matrimony, or Baptism—it is all-holy. And this is said by Saint Isidore of Pelusium, a man aflame with zeal. Saint Anastasios of Sinai likewise says: “Do not say, ‘The one who offers is sinful; he is condemned; he is unworthy; and the grace of the Holy Spirit does not descend upon the Gifts,’” for this is what some people imagine. “Think none of these things, for Another knows and examines what is hidden.” Behind that priest, he says, there is Another. Recognize that the One to whom you are going...
is higher than he. Know that He is above him, and leave judgment to the righteous Judge. There is Another above who will judge the priest; do not take that judgment upon yourself. Therefore, I beg you, do not judge. Do not assign grades, saying, “This one is worthy; that one is not,” and so forth, as we so often do without due care. I beg you, do not judge, and above all, do not judge a priest of God. Do not even take his failings upon your lips. Instead, draw near with faith, with repentance shown in deeds, and with a clear conscience, and you will certainly receive the grace of the divine Mystery and sanctification. “For even if the one offering the bloodless sacrifice were an angel of God, if you approached unworthily, the angel could in no way cleanse you from your sins.” He then gives Judas as an example.
How was Judas benefited by receiving Holy Communion from the immaculate hands of Christ? Satan entered into him, and he went away and hanged himself. Do we understand? So this is no excuse for the many who do not attend church or go to confession: “And what is the priest? What is he? The priest is a sinner,” and all the rest. Go and do what you need to do, and do not debate it. However sinful the priest may be, grace still works through him, provided he has not been deposed from Holy Orders. If he has been deposed, the Church, which gave him the power and authority to serve on her behalf, withdraws them and returns him to the rank of the laity. Provided he has not been excommunicated or deposed, respect him and receive his ministry. The power possessed even by a sinful priest may be recognized in the following account. I do not know whether you have read it. I found it in a manuscript from the Holy...
Mountain, and I published it some years ago in a magazine that I edit. It concerns Saint Mercurius and a priest. Once, a priest became drunk and sinned during the night—not with his wife, but with another woman who had been waiting for an opportunity to lead the priest into sin. For Satan incites people to such acts with particular intensity. It is like the fashion among young women in our country today to become involved with married men. They are not content simply to become prostitutes and take up with an unmarried young man; they choose married men. Why? So that the damage may be doubled, by making the men adulterers as well. In just this way, Satan seeks to entice a person into sin. He does not want anyone to stand firm.
There was a woman from Kefalonia whose brother-in-law was a monk and a virgin. In 1953, he came down after the earthquake to see whether any of his parents had survived, and he stayed in her house. She got him drunk and put him together with one of her friends to rob him of his virginity. She hated him because he was a virgin. And so he lost the monastic life as well, and so forth. In this account of Saint Mercurius, then, the following occurred. A certain priest’s wife had gone that evening to the home of her mother and father, who were ill. A neighbor who had always been lying in wait managed to invite the priest into her house, supposedly to offer him something to eat. I do not know what she put in his food or drink, but she got him drunk and slept with him.
He woke in the morning, and his wife returned and found him asleep. She said to him, “What are you doing there? Are you not going today? Is there no Divine Liturgy?” He replied, “After what we did last night, how can I go and celebrate the Divine Liturgy?” “What did you do last night? I was at my father’s house. What did you do?” Then he understood what had happened. But since he was the priest appointed to celebrate the Divine Liturgy with the chanter, he felt he could not stay away. He might have pretended to be ill or found some other excuse. In any case, he disregarded his sin and went. When he had finished the Divine Liturgy, an angel of the Lord appeared behind the holy altar and said to him, “Sinful priest, what have you done today? Where were you, what were you last night, and what have you done now?”
The priest said, “Who are you to rebuke me?” The angel replied, “Can you not see that I am an angel of the Lord?” “Then lose your wings,” the priest said, “and sit there. I am leaving.” At once the angel’s wings fell away, and he remained there motionless. The priest, hardened by sin and continually reproached by his conscience, gathered his belongings a few days later and left for another place where no one knew him, apparently so that the woman who had done this to him that night would not expose him publicly. The result was this: the archangel was bound by the priest’s word, while the priest himself was now bound by the archangel.
He reached the age of three hundred—three hundred and fifty years—and still had not died. He was serving the Divine Liturgy there, though no one knew how old he was, and so on. Then came the feast of Saint Mercurius, and the bishop...
...was recounting the life of Saint Mercurius and saying that there was a monastery in such-and-such a place, and so on. The priest sat there and said to the bishop, “I know all about these things.” “How do you know?” the bishop asked. “I not only know about them,” he replied, “but I lived there and saw them for myself.” As they continued speaking, it came to light that these events had taken place and that the priest was three hundred and fifty years old. So the bishop told him, “Do you know what you have done? The angel is bound there, and you are bound by the angel. That is why you cannot die, even at three hundred and fifty years of age. Get up and go there, so that you may forgive one another.” “I cannot go,” he said. “I am a poor man and have no means to make the journey.” So the bishop took responsibility for everything. He hired animals for the journey and took him along, and after many days they reached that place. To make a long story short, they arrived and found the church in ruins.
But from certain trees here and there, the priest was able to identify the place. “It is there,” he said, and they came to the ruins. The Holy Altar was in ruins as well. He went over and saw the angel still sitting behind it. As soon as the angel saw him, he said, “Wretched priest, are you still alive?” “Holy angel of God,” the priest replied, “are you still here too?” “Since you bound me, where else could I be?” the angel said. Where could he be? A priest who had committed fornication had bound an angel. “Where else could I be?” he said. “Forgive me, holy angel of God; forgive me.” But the angel answered, “You must forgive me, because if I forgive you first, you will immediately turn to dust, and I will remain here.” At last the priest forgave the angel. Immediately the angel was set free. “And you too are forgiven,” the angel told him. At the words, “You are forgiven,” the priest immediately became dust and bones.
The bishop saw all this and tore at his hair in astonishment. He was utterly overwhelmed. The angel said to him, “Bishop, what would you like me to do for you in return for the good you have done for us?” The bishop replied, “Chant for me, so that I may hear how you chant in heaven.” “If I begin chanting for you here,” the angel said, “you will die. But because of the kindness you have shown, I will ascend to the third heaven and chant to you from there.” The angel departed and chanted from there, and the bishop collapsed, nearly fainting at what he heard. He remained there for two or three hours; then he arose and left. These things are recorded in a manuscript on the Holy Mountain. What almighty power! Therefore, let no one remain outside the Church because of a priest’s sin; the sin is his, not the Holy Orders he bears. Let everyone go to Holy Confession, and let everyone come to metanoia, to repentance. If we truly desire it, let us put into practice all that has been asked of you and make good use of everything you learn from our Lord. This is my heartfelt prayer for the whole world and for us as well. Amen.

οτιδήποτε και αν κάνει, είναι γελασμένος και θα βρεθεί γελασμένος εκείνη την ημέρα. Όλες οι αμαρτίες τακτοποιούνται λοιπόν διά της ταυτοπαθίας, όπως είπαμε. Και πρέπει ο άνθρωπος να το χωνέψει αυτό, να το καταλάβει. Θα πρέπει ακόμη να γνωρίζουμε ότι οι αμαρτίες δεν παλιώνουν. Οι αμαρτίες δεν σκουριάζουν, οι αμαρτίες δεν φθείρονται, ώστε να πούμε: «Αχ, έχουν περάσει τώρα τόσα χρόνια». Ο Σατανάς το κρατάει στο χέρι και θα στο παρουσιάσει φρέσκο. Διότι, και να θέλω να αποφύγω, θα πει ο Κύριος, θα πει ο Θεός, δεν μπορώ να αποφύγω. Εδώ είναι ο μάρτυς της κατηγορίας, ο οποίος παρουσιάζει και μου λέει ότι εγώ είμαι δίκαιος. Πώς κάνω αδικία και τον αδικώ;
«Το αίμα του Ιησού Χριστού είναι εκείνο το οποίον καθαρίζει ημάς από πάσης αμαρτίας». Το αίμα του Ιησού Χριστού. Γι’ αυτό και πάντοτε είναι «εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν την αιώνιον». Έχει ειδικόν τρόπον ο Χριστός και ειδικά φάρμακα. Όπως για κάθε αρρώστια υπάρχει ειδικότης των ιατρών, ειδικότητες στα νοσοκομεία, ειδικά φάρμακα για κάθε αρρώστια, έτσι και στα πνευματικά θέματα. Δεν είναι δυνατόν με υλικά πράγματα και με υλικές πράξεις ανθρώπινες να τακτοποιηθούν τα θέματα των αμαρτιών. Διότι, επαναλαμβάνω, η αμαρτία άπτεται του ουρανού, προσβάλλει τη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού. Εβλασφήμησε τον Θεό. Τι θα κάνεις τώρα, λέει, ελεημοσύνη; Πώς θα γίνει;
Συγγνώμη, για να διαφθαρούμε στη σάρκα, διαφθειρόμεθα πρώτα στο μυαλό. Η σαρξ οδηγείται από τον νου. Όταν διαφθαρεί ο νους, διότι η καρδία είναι διεφθαρμένη, αυτό το τρίγωνο: η καρδία, διεφθαρμένη, διαφθείρει τον νουν και ο νους βάζει πλέον. Πρέπει, λοιπόν, να τροποποιήσουμε το μυαλό, να πάψει να διαφθείρεται το μυαλό. Ο Ισαάκ ο Σύρος λέγει σε αυτή την περίπτωση το εξής: «Εν διανοία βελτιούμεθα και εν διανοία αχρειούμεθα». Από εκεί ξεκινάνε τα πάντα. Μυαλό, λοιπόν, θετικό, πρακτικό. Τι μου ζητάει; Τι μου ζητάει αυτός ο Θεός; Εγώ σου λέω, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα. Πάμε, δεν υπάρχει. Αν υπάρχει ένα τοις δισεκατομμυρίοις, τι εκέρδισες εσύ, ο οποίος δεν τον εδέχτης και δεν επίστευσες, και τι έχασα εγώ που τον εδέχτηκα;
