Summary
The beauty and support of a church building are encouraging, but their true purpose is the salvation of the people who worship within it. Good works do not save independently of Christ but become saving when they flow from faith and life within His sacramental Body. The faithful are urged not merely to visit the Church or offer candles and gifts, but to remain living members of Christ and ready to meet Him at any moment.

Most of us are coming to this place for the first time. At first sight, we are delighted by what we see—especially this beautiful church and the work being done to adorn it. This shows that there are still people who believe in something.
In these times in which we live, when there is such coldness toward matters of faith, it is good that there are still people who care, and others who support those who care, so that these sacred monuments can be built and maintained. It is a good sign. It shows that God has not yet abandoned us, but still enables us to see what is truly for our good.
But this in itself is not the main thing. Alongside this effort, we must also make proper use of what has been built. It is not enough for a person simply to enter a church. Nor is it enough for someone to express his faith by building a church.
The purpose of these sacred buildings is that people may be saved within them. The first type of a temple that we find in the Old Testament is Noah’s Ark. He too built a temple of sorts, and those who entered it were saved. But those who worked on the Ark perished, because they did not enter it. Many people help to build this Ark.
They offer their sweat, their money, and their goodwill, but that alone is not enough. They must enter and remain inside, because outside there is a flood; outside there are sin and destruction. It is not enough to give some money for the chandelier, the lighting, or the iconography. That is good, but only partly good. For the good to be made complete, a person must understand what takes place in here and must come inside. More than that, he must live in the Church more than he lives in his own home, if he wishes to receive true benefit. Outside that Ark no one was saved, whether prominent or unknown. There must have been many good people then, and many who had done numerous good works in their lives; yet they perished. Even they perished.
The craftsmen who built the Ark were not saved themselves, although animals, reptiles, and every kind of irrational creature were preserved inside it. This is something that should fill a person with fear. It is therefore not enough for me to make an offering, especially if I want my name inscribed on some plaque of benefactors or donors. That amounts to nothing. A person must always give without letting his left hand know what his right hand has done. For the devil takes away the greater part of our good works when we do not know how to guard them. It is said that the lion...
...walks through the forest, and when it senses an enemy or catches the scent of a man, it quickly lowers its tail and wipes away the tracks behind it as it walks, so that neither dog, enemy, nor man can find it. In exactly the same way, when a person does good, he must conceal it and not let the good deed be seen.
More precisely, he must not desire to display the good he has done. Many people give toward a good work because they think their name will be written somewhere. If they did not expect that, they would not give; or, if they did give, they would not give as much as they do when they expect to see their name inscribed on a plaque of donors or benefactors. God does not want such things.
Let us build all these things, but let us build them so that we ourselves may be benefited. Those who entered that Ark were saved, and those who enter this Ark will be saved. Yet here a comparison is being made, and someone may deceive himself and say, “I am never absent from the Church. Therefore, I must be saved, just as those who were in that Ark were saved.” That is not true. Your reasoning is mistaken. They were not saved merely because they entered the Church—that is, the Ark of that time. That was not the only reason they were saved. They were also nourished inside the Ark by what the Ark provided. Had they not been nourished by it, they would not have been dead outside...
...they would have been dead inside. We would then have had dead people both outside and inside. That is the sorrowful thing. But those within had taken care to feed on what Noah provided. And so, when the Flood abated after about one hundred and fifty days, the waters began to recede, and the Ark came to rest upon Mount Ararat, all who had entered it came out alive—the people, the animals, the reptiles, and the birds. By contrast, all those who remained outside, even the craftsmen who had built it, perished. Thus there were no dead within the Ark whom they would have had to cast out when the Ark came to rest.
But that is precisely what happens in this Ark. Sadly, this Ark has many dead people inside it. For there are three kinds: the dead, the living dead, and the living. The dead are those in the cemetery. The living are those in the Church who are nourished by the Church. And the living dead are those who are in the Church but are not nourished by the Church. Who are those who receive no nourishment from the Church and remain dead within her? Those who are unrepentant, who have not made Holy Confession, and who do not receive Holy Communion. These are the living dead; they are cemeteries walking about.
You have heard how a man once asked permission to go and bury his father, and Christ did not grant it. He told him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.” “But my father has died; let me go.” “Listen to what I am telling you. There are dead men wearing neckties in your village who will bury your dead father. You,” He tells him, “come and follow Me.” They are the living dead. And how does the father describe the Prodigal Son to the elder brother? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” But how was he dead? He was out carousing with women. Precisely. Far from his father’s household, far from his home, far from the Church—as we might say today—a person is living but dead. To be dead means to be cut off from life, just as the body dies when it is separated from the soul.
And the soul dies when it is separated from God. When did Adam die, and how many deaths did he suffer? Adam died two deaths. He suffered spiritual death at the very moment of his disobedience, and then he suffered bodily death after nine hundred and thirty years. Just as the soul must remain united with the body for the body to live, so God must dwell with the soul for the soul to live. God is not sold or bought, nor is He given casually. He offers Himself to those who struggle, who are watchful, and who prepare themselves. Those who do not struggle, who are careless, and who do not prepare themselves do not receive God. A person who gives no thought to where he is coming when he comes to the Church—what a place he is entering!
A person who gives no thought to whom he is about to meet is living but dead. The divine John Chrysostom says, “Have you entered the church? Examine yourself.” Did you think carefully before coming to church? Did you consider where you were going and whom you would meet there? Some imagine that when they come to church, they are coming to meet the parish committee at the candle counter, the sacristan, the chanters, or the priest. They are mistaken. Christ stands there at the door, like one who sees into the very depths of us. He knows and searches hearts and inward parts. He knows who each person is, who he was yesterday, who he is as he comes here today, and who he will be tomorrow. And He gives to each accordingly. We even say this to Him.
We do not pay attention to it, because the steamroller of habit has flattened the deepest meanings for us. In one verse of the Doxology, we say to Christ, “Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we have hoped in You.” In other words: Let Your mercy toward us be as great as our preparation. Do not worry—He will give you exactly that much. Yet we come without considering who is here, what is offered here, or why we have come. We arrive bad and leave worse—far worse. For when a person dares to stand before Christ and tell Him, “I have no need of You,” woe to him.
This is why the priest comes out through the Holy Doors and says these few words: “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” Yet a person remains in his stasidon or chair, watches from a distance, and imagines that the invitation is not addressed to him. He thinks those words are simply said as a matter of course and have nothing to do with us: “They are meant for those who have become holy.” But where are you and I going? Did we not come to the Church to become holy? Did we not come to the Church to enter into communion with Christ? Does Holy Scripture not say plainly that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin? How, then, do you come to the Church unprepared and with your life in disorder?
You are in no condition to present yourself when He calls you to the Holy Doors. What are you waiting for? To take the antidoron, perhaps even from the candle counter, and then get up and leave? Where are you going? Where did Judas go after receiving the Bread and departing? He went and killed himself. Satan entered into him. Where are you going? And so, beloved, it is not enough for this building merely to be completed. One day it will stand as a witness against us if it is not put to its true use. A person must know that this is the temple of God. He comes here to be born anew and to preserve the life of his soul, regenerated through Baptism, so that he may surrender it on the day when eight feet and eight joined hands carry him here, and the priest says, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today, for a place of rest has been prepared for you.” May that way indeed be blessed.
“A place of rest has been prepared for you.” For unless the Church prepares a place of rest for each person, no one can prepare anything for himself in the Kingdom of Heaven. People do good works, so I hear, and rest confidently in those works. “Do you know what that man does? Do you know what I do in secret?” I look at your relationship with the Church, and I have no need of your works. Unless your works spring from faith and are done by a child of God and a brother of Christ, they will not be works leading to salvation; they will be works leading to destruction. Your works will be like an iron weight around your neck, dragging you down to Hell.
The Kingdom of Heaven is not for people who are merely good. All such “good people” are in Hell; not one is in Paradise. Someone will ask, “Then for whom is Paradise? If those who do good works go to Hell, for whom is Paradise?” It is for Christians. Being a Christian is one thing; being a good person is another. This does not mean that a Christian is not a good person. But someone may be a good person and not be a Christian at all. He may be so gentle that he would not tread on an ant, yet blaspheme Christ. He may give away even the last drop of his saliva, as it were, yet refuse to see the priest. He may refuse to hear of metanoia, of repentance, or of Holy Confession. He considers himself worthy—more than worthy—and issues himself a certificate that, as you know, is valid nowhere.
He listens to what the world says about him. But that is not the point, because a person’s works do not save him. There is no salvation by works; there is salvation by Christ. Christ saves—that is why He is called the Savior. He saves the lost souls of sinful people. Therefore, when a person comes to the Church but has no relationship with the Mysteries of the Church, then whatever he may do, whatever good work he may perform, he will remain outside in the vestibule. Christ is the One who saves a person and leads him to salvation. Christ receives the person who comes from his mother spiritually dead, regenerates him through Baptism, and preserves that life, newly born through Baptism, by means of metanoia, repentance, and Holy Confession.
He nourishes this life through Holy Communion. That is why, above the Beautiful Gate, there is the Vine flowing from the Mystical Supper. Read the fifteenth chapter of John, where He says: “I am the Vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me bears much fruit.” When a branch remains on the vine, it draws sap from the vine, from the stock, and produces sugar, alcohol, and so many other things. But when it is cut off, it withers and is thrown into the furnace. And so, people who come to the Church merely to light a candle, or perhaps even to bring their offerings, but do not come prepared to receive Holy Communion, to partake of the Mystery, do nothing for their own souls. A person’s works
secure a place in Paradise, but not entrance into it. Do you understand what that means? A place in Paradise, but not entrance. It is like having bought a numbered seat in a stadium, yet being unable to enter because you have no ticket—even if you would pay on the black market—and so you remain outside. Your seat is inside, yes, but you cannot get in. Or it is like a man who owns a magnificent six-room penthouse worth a million dollars, a paradise inside, yet you find him outside the door, battered by wind and rain or scorched by the blazing sun. You ask him, “Mr. So-and-so, what are you doing here?” And he replies, “I do not have the key.” Though he owns that penthouse upstairs, he sits outside because he has no key to enter it. The key is Christ.
The key is the Mystery of Mysteries, the Holy Eucharist. It is the blood of Christ that grants Paradise. And woe to those who come to the Church! I am not speaking about those who watch these things from a distance. I am not speaking about those who get up on Sunday and go to work. Those people do not understand; they are not in their right minds. Nor am I speaking about those who open their businesses and often become the cause of others being led astray and not coming to the Church. I am speaking about those who do come to the Church, yet remain asleep and dead within the Church. It is utterly unnatural for a dead person to remain inside the Ark, because everything dead is expelled. If a child dies in its mother’s womb, the body will expel it; everything dead within the human body is cast out. How much more must this be true of the Body of the Church?
Christ is the Head, and we are the members. Christ cannot accept us unless we are living members of Christ. Someone says, “But I received the antidoron.” And what of it? Ask the antidoron what it is. “What is your name?” “My name is antidoron. That means I am not the Gift; I am given instead of the Gift. I am not the Gift itself.” “Then where is the Gift?” The priest brought it forth there, but you did not approach. And now you have received the antidoron. The antidoron becomes a witness against you. Does antidoron mean Hell? Is that what antidoron means? Eat a whole basketful of antidoron. Drink a quart, or five quarts, of the Great Agiasmos. You will still go to Hell. These things do not save. They impart a blessing; they are not salvation. “The blessing of the Lord and His mercy.” May the blessing of the Jordan be with you.
Salvation—salvation comes only through Holy Communion, for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. The blood of Jesus Christ opens the way for everyone. Yet a person does not wish to live the corresponding life, so that when the priest comes forth—which means that Christ Himself comes forth, for in the person of the priest or hierarch it is Christ Himself—he may approach and enter into communion with Christ. For Christ says: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” He who eats My flesh—not someone who ate one tiny morsel because of a fishbone, a gold tooth, or because another year has passed and it is Easter, Christmas, or the Dormition Fast. He who eats My flesh.
Just as you have a body and feed it once, twice, three, four, five, even seven times a day, so you must also have food for your spirit. Say the Our Father. You will come to the words: “Give us this day our daily bread.” What does this mean? What is this daily bread? It is bread from the bakery for the body, but also bread from the Holy Table for the spirit. The human person has a twofold nature. You feed the flesh to preserve it, but you must also feed the soul to preserve it. There are two tables, two kinds of bread, and two fires. There is the fire that bakes material bread for the body; and there is the Holy Spirit, the heavenly fire, whom the priest invokes while we sing “We praise You” outside the altar: “Send down, O Lord...”
“Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth, and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ. Amen. And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Your Christ. Amen. Changing them by Your Holy Spirit. Amen, amen, amen.” From that moment, we have the Body and Blood of Christ. Why has this been done, O Lord? “That for those who partake, they may be for nepsis, the watchfulness of the soul; for the forgiveness of sins; for the remission of transgressions; for communion with the Holy Spirit”—for this, for this, for this. According to Basil the Great, the person who receives Holy Communion receives twenty-three gifts; and the person who watches from afar and merely marvels at what is taking place is deprived of those twenty-three gifts.
Therefore, after this brief digression, I repeat my point and return to the thread of what I was saying. Our purpose is not to remain dead inside the Ark. But for a person to receive Holy Communion when he approaches the Holy Chalice and presents himself, he must also live the corresponding life. Yet we lack that life, and ignorance prevails in these matters, because people do not know what is being accomplished within the Church. Many times, even the priest himself does not understand what he is accomplishing within the Church, because we have not delved deeply into the patristic and ecclesiastical texts. And there may have been many priests who called the people to approach, but then, when they did approach, turned them away
by asking them what they had eaten the day before. Is that the question to ask? If you ask him, “My child, have you been to Holy Confession?” I understand that. But whether he ate oil yesterday, on Saturday? Saturday is not a fasting day. Must you excommunicate him first before giving him Holy Communion? Of course, there is ignorance among the people, but also among newly ordained clergy. Yet there are also priests who read and understand what is taking place, and they grieve when they come out with the Holy Chalice and return to the altar without giving Holy Communion to anyone. Because from that point onward the lies begin. “Arise! Having partaken...” A lie. “We have seen the true Light; we have received the heavenly Spirit.” Lies, lies, lies. No light—no one received Holy Communion. You neither saw the Holy Spirit nor received the Spirit...
No true Light—nothing, nothing, nothing. From that point onward, it is all lies. With such a life among the religious people in the church, we have an entire cemetery. You will have noticed that when the time comes for people to receive Holy Communion, a commotion begins. Until Holy Communion, not a leaf stirs. But as soon as the people are called to receive—and especially on major feast days, when everyone suddenly becomes a Saint, though the next day they are no longer Saints—then you hear noise and disorder. From this one can understand that here, at Holy Communion, Satan’s interests are being threatened. And Satan wants to bring a person to Holy Communion in a state of sin, so that he may be benefited as little as possible and Satan may retain a greater hold over him.
Here the faithful person must struggle, so that when he comes to the Church and receives Holy Communion, he may receive all the good things that flow from Holy Communion. This requires spiritual struggle and a proper understanding. If, then, the Mysteries of the Church are not put to use, you should know that we receive no benefit. Of course, as I said, metanoia—repentance—will be necessary; Holy Confession will be necessary; fasting will be necessary; and restraint in both food and the flesh will be necessary. But a person is not willing to deny himself these things. That is precisely why he does not come. He prefers his flesh; he prefers to crawl about like a little worm rather than give up
certain things in order to enter into communion with Christ. But how long can this continue? Death has become very common today, as you know. You do not know at what hour you will depart. You may depart together with your whole family, or even with the whole community. Things today are so unstable, and there are so many ways to die. Therefore, a person must not only have obtained his ticket; he must also carry that ticket with him, so that whenever he finds himself facing death, he may say: “Behold, here I am, O Lord.” In saying all this, I do not wish to frighten you. That is not my purpose. I simply wish to shed light upon your darkness. From the little experience I have gained as I travel among the people, I see where the world is faltering—where it is faltering. A person may gladly
come this far. But if he does not make use of what is here... There are three possible ways. In the first, the devil prevents a person from coming at all. In the second, he allows the person to come here, but on Satan’s terms. And the third is for the person both to come and to make good use of his time here, so that he may be benefited. For that is the purpose. When a woman gives birth, she takes the newborn child and brings it to her breast. If she does not feed the child she has borne, it will die. Giving birth is not enough; she must also nourish it. A woman plants basil, but if she does not water it, it will wither. So it is with the human soul. The baptismal font is a womb, a spiritual womb. It regenerates the human person. He enters as a fleshly man and comes forth spiritual;
he enters dead and comes forth alive. But if this person, now alive and regenerated, does not go on to the other Mystery, Holy Communion, which is the breast of the Church... Whenever you see the Holy Chalice brought forth, know that the Church is offering you her breast, so that you may receive life and preserve the life given to you in Baptism. It is very sad that mothers often bring their children to receive Holy Communion while they themselves do not partake, because they abort other children or avoid having them. Holy Communion cannot be bribed; grace cannot be bribed. Does God not know what He is doing? What do you think Holy Communion is, an aspirin that will make your child holy? It will not. A particular faith is required.
Faith was required for the child to be regenerated through Baptism, and faith is likewise required for that little soul, regenerated through Baptism, to be preserved. And you must understand that children whose parents do not believe in Christ and do not follow His will, but instead follow their own will or the will of the world, should know that they do not have the grace of God. And the parents bear responsibility. That is why we have so many illnesses, so many deaths, and so many cases of cancer in society today. “Many are weak and sick among you, and many have fallen asleep,” says Paul. Read carefully at home the eleventh chapter of the First Epistle to the Corinthians, from verse 26 onward. There you will find the very things over which humanity mourns today, yet refuses to understand. It is true that many of us love the Church. But
is that enough? All my devotion may amount to no more than a candle—and often a candle as tall as I am. All my devotion may be contained in a can of oil, or in a prosphoron, a dish of kollyva, or some other offering. That is wrong. When a person comes to the Church, he must bear this in mind: besides what I told you—that Christ stands at the door and knows exactly who each person is—he then goes over, takes a candle, and lights it. And often he leaves at once, saying, “I lit my candle.” What did you do, then? What did you do? Is that candle really yours? To begin with, it is not even wax.
It is paraffin. But if it is genuine beeswax—and that is the kind of candle that should burn in the Church—then it must not be Cain’s sacrifice, which God does not accept, but Abel’s sacrifice. And if, for financial reasons, the Church buys inferior candles to keep its finances going because the people do not contribute, then buy pure wax at home and bring your own little candle here to offer to your God. It should not merely be good; it should be the finest. Give your money there to support the Church, but do not light that candle. Bring your own pure candle and place it here. When you take that candle from over there, where are you taking it from?
From a coffin. Those candles over there are like bodies in coffins. What confession does the candle make? “I, who once was dead, have risen, and now I stand upon a broad tier and give light. I was extinguished and dead.” And what is this candle stand? Do you see the candle stands here? These are not proper candle stands;
they are chandeliers and have no place in the Church. But the parish council members, wanting to make something beautiful, buy whatever each manufacturer offers them today. A proper candle stand should have three upright supports: one, two, three—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It should have one broad tier with sockets all around it for the candles that symbolize us. Its central stem should descend from the upper tier and end in three supports below. This is interpreted as follows: one person of the Holy Trinity, Christ, descended to earth. The stem descending below is Christ, who came down to earth while remaining with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Our most beautiful Church proclaims this, and our clergy say it as they return into the altar after the Great Entrance: You are with the thief, You are in the tomb, You are in Paradise—everywhere, O uncircumscribed One. And so, by placing my little candle upon that stand, I declare that Christ came and made me radiant as well. What else does the candle do? It offers light so that people may see, and warmth so that they may be warmed. It offers both light and warmth.
Little by little, it melts away upon the altar of Christ, leaving nothing behind. And so I, who once was dead but whom Christ raised to life, and who now shine, offer myself and my whole life as light and goodness to others. Many times, however, the candle has light while we who offered it have no light at all. We are full of darkness—profound darkness. Therefore, it is not enough merely to light my candle and imagine that my devotion is somehow contained in it. The honey belongs to Christ. Christ is not moved by receiving what is already His. Or perhaps I brought an oil lamp and oil; the oil also belongs to Christ. And if Christ commands that the olive tree should bear no fruit, it will bear none, no matter how much you spray it.
If that beautiful prayer of our Church, offered by our priests—“for seasonable weather and an abundance of the fruits of the earth”—is not heard, if Christ does not bless us, everything dries up. However hard you press the olives, you will not find a drop of oil, even with a telescope. It is the mercy of God that gives us the oil of the olive tree. That too belongs to Him, and it does not move Him. You may bring Him gold to make chandeliers and golden chalices, but these do not move Him either; the gold is His. There is only one thing He wants you to bring Him: your sins. That is what moves Christ. That is what moves Heaven. “Over even one sinner who repents,” there is joy in Heaven. Thank you. People enter here who have not exchanged so much as a good morning with their fellow human beings for years. People enter here, celebrate Pascha, and hold the candle of the Resurrection, while they themselves remain fallen.
I do not know how many years they have spent in court, or how long they have been bringing accusations against others. Whom do you think you can deceive? You may deceive me; you may deceive your mother; a wife may deceive her husband; you may deceive the public prosecutor; you may even deceive yourself. But you cannot deceive Christ. His knowledge is not limited; you cannot deceive Christ. And He does not add days to your life, O man, so that you may enlarge your estate, turning what is “his” into “mine,” making what belongs to Him your own. Has what was “his” now become “yours”? It is neither his nor yours; it belongs to all. Neither mine nor yours—it remains His, just as it always was. And even if you registered it at the land registry or the registry office—what then?
Someone else’s property was entered under your name. It is neither yours nor mine. What lies beneath it all? Who is in charge? “Today mine, tomorrow yours, never anyone’s.” What profound wisdom! Therefore, a person must take heed. Christ is forbearing with us and waits for us—not because He does not know who we are. No, that is not the reason. Where can you escape? Where can you go? Where can you hide? Where can you fly? “Where shall I flee from Your Spirit?” Shall I take wings and go to the ends of the earth? He is there. Will you go to the sea? Where can you go? Where can you flee from God? He is there, and He knows who you are. There again is the Painter. You cannot evade Him; you cannot escape. He waits for you,
He waits for me and bears with me—He continues to bear with me. We live by Christ’s forbearance, not by our own righteousness. We live by Christ’s forbearance. But until when? How long will He bear with us? Many people imagine that because He does not cut off their noses and ears, because He does not cut out their tongues at the very moment they sin, accuse others, tell lies, make obscene gestures, or blaspheme, either God does not exist or God has no power. But God does exist, and God does have power; He is simply long-suffering. The Greek word for long-suffering is a compound word: it means being far from anger. Look at the Beautiful Gate. Why is it called the Beautiful Gate?
Is it called that because it is more beautiful than the other two? No. It is not called the Beautiful Gate because of its beauty, but because something unique and unrepeatable takes place there. There, at the Beautiful Gate, God meets His creature and makes His creature fit to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. It is the place where God comes into contact with man—God with the clay—and the clay is made incorruptible. And in ecstasy the Psalmist says, “How is it that I, who am clay, partake of You, my God, and am made incorruptible?” This takes place through the intercessions of the Theotokos: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” At the Beautiful Gate, then, reconciliation will take place.
An introduction. The Most Holy Theotokos will present us to Christ and intercede for us. We will do whatever Christ tells us, and then Christ Himself will be offered to us from the Holy Chalice and will sanctify us. And our soul, now united with Christ, will one day enter the Kingdom of Heaven. There is no other way to reach Heaven. Here you must be reconciled. You must repent, confess your sins, and enter. There are no side doors. Whichever other door you approach, an archangel stands before it. “Lord, Lord”—you must enter through the Holy Doors. Are you going to enter that way? That is the only way. Only this gate will be opened, for at all the others there are archangels with swords in their hands. So if a person wishes to remain in his sins and imagines that he can somehow slip by another way onto the path leading to the Kingdom, he will not succeed.
For the angels forbid him. He can pass only through here. I remember when I was little, my father would take me to Church and make me stay there, whether I wanted to or not. He would not let me stay outside playing ball or sleep at home. And woe to those parents who, in one way or another, leave their children outside the Church—whether to go to the seaside or to a football match. As I have said, they will have a dreadful account to give. We must keep our children here, and no one should take them away. Bring your child to Church—even if you have to throw him down like an octopus—while he is still under your authority. Tomorrow, when the proper time comes and his nous, his spiritual intellect, begins to work rightly, he will kiss your hands and thank you. My father would make me stand there on the left, with him behind me,
so that I would never know when he was watching me and when he was not, and I would therefore have to remain right at the front at all times. Then, when I went home at noon and sat down at the table to eat, my siblings and I had to recite to him at least a short passage from the Apostle or the Gospel. If, for one reason or another, we could not, there was no food for us. This was to make sure we paid close attention in Church. Our excellent parents in those days did everything they could. Today, unfortunately, we provide every comfort while leaving our children with no connection to the Church. And we ourselves have turned this holy place into a place of revelry. But to return to what I was saying: I remember the Archangel on the left in a little chapel dedicated to the two Saints Theodore in my village, where I had learned these things. There was an inscription there. The Archangel held his sword raised and barred the way, and it read: “Extortioners, adulterers, thieves, robbers, and fornicators, flee and tremble. Behold the sword of judgment, with which I cut off the heads of those who do not conduct themselves rightly.” I remember it as though I were seeing it now. And that is how it is.
This, then, is where you must pass. You will pass through these Holy Doors and be reconciled with Christ. The Most Holy Theotokos will intercede for you; she will beseech Christ to give you His Body and Blood, to transform you: to make you new instead of common, spiritual instead of earthly, eternal instead of passing, and a royal child instead of a slave, so that you may inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. But if you refuse to listen, obey, and follow the way shown by the Church, then tomorrow you will find yourself facing the justice of God. In Byzantine iconography, beneath the feet of the Honorable Forerunner, besides the Jordan and the trees, there is also an axe.
It is the justice of God. For an axe to cut, as you know, someone must take it in hand. An axe does not cut by itself. Today the justice of God remains still; He has not yet taken it in hand. Today God’s justice is not yet acting. Do you ask God for justice? Out of a thousand injustices, perhaps one is answered and one punished, just as out of a thousand good deeds, perhaps one is rewarded. All this is reserved for that Day. Then everyone will receive what is due, and everyone will be judged. You heard it today. Paul said it in his concluding words: “God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.” Although they “subdued kingdoms,” and although the martyrs, the prophets, and the rest endured suffering, nevertheless “they did not receive the promise.” They have not yet received the prize, he says, because God has ordained something better: that we too may be made perfect together with them.
on that great Day, when He will repay some according to their works and others according to their wickedness. If, then, a person refuses to make use of this time of God’s goodness and patient endurance, and puts off until tomorrow something he can do today, and when tomorrow becomes today, puts it off until the next day—and in this way Satan steals the present from him and promises him a future that he does not possess—then he will find that he has been deceived, and he will find himself face to face with God. And woe to that person! It would be better for him to fall into the hands of every prosecutor in the world than to fall “into the hands of the living God.” Let me help you understand. Look all around: wherever there are icons of the Saints, and even before Christ Himself and our Most Holy Theotokos, there is an oil lamp burning in front of each one. Now look here at the bishop’s throne. There is no oil lamp here. No oil burns here. Why can they not place a small, gold-colored lamp above it?
They do not put one there, lest the bishop’s mitre strike it. That is amusing. If a person understood what this gesture means, he would never enter the Church in the same way again. He would be filled with fear. Do not look at the outward appearance. Here there is mercy: “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us,” and then Christ saves us. But here there is judgment, and in judgment there is no mercy. Woe to the person who fails to make use of God’s goodness and falls into the hands of His justice. No mother-in-law or daughter-in-law, no grandfather or nun, no grandmother or other relative will have any say—no one. The justice of God will judge us. Judgment is merciless toward those who have shown no mercy—not merely to those outside, but to those within. We consider ourselves very generous: we are good to outsiders, yet harsh toward our own immortal soul.
The person who has not loved his own soul and united it with Christ, so that Christ may give it life, is the hardest-hearted person in the world, no matter how many good works he may do for his fellow man. Scripture says: show mercy first to yourself, and then to others. “O Lord, I have loved the beauty of Your house.” Do you think this refers only to those who care for the church building? Where does Christ dwell? In temples made by human hands? The human soul is the throne of Christ. “We shall come,” He says, “and make Our dwelling there.” The whole Holy Trinity will dwell within. So this is the beauty we must care for first. Consider all these things. Of course, caring for the church building also has its reward, and those who look after it will receive that reward. But above all, we must care for the beauty of the soul, because Christ dwells in human hearts. He does not dwell in temples made by human hands. We are here to worship God.
in the cool shade, and beneath its roof in winter. But above all, the human soul is the living temple of the Holy Spirit, of our Christ, and of God the Father. That is why, as I say, this entire church reminds us and teaches us how we must conduct ourselves if we are to be spiritually benefited. Those of us who have been together from the beginning started with the account of the Ark. Inside the Ark were different kinds of animals that did not get along with one another. There was a dove, for example, and below it there was a wild beast—a crocodile. There was a swan inside, and there was also a buffalo. There were clean birds, and then, right there among them, unclean ones as well.
There were eight people inside the Ark: Noah, his wife, Shem, Ham, Japheth, and their wives—“Noah, one of eight,” in the Ark. There was filth and a terrible stench. Do you imagine they had detergents back then, and all the things we have today for getting rid of dirt? Did they have hoses and the like to wash everything down? Just imagine the filth and the stench inside. Yet no one complained—not a single complaint: “Let us open the doors and throw out the crocodiles, the oxen, and the dogs, so the stench will leave and we can live.” No! They floated upon the waters and journeyed into the unknown, without turning against one another, but bearing with one another.
And how do you regard the people around you? How do you look upon the man who comes and lights his candle, when for two or three years now you have not even said good morning to him? Do you bear with him in his weakness? He wronged you, granted—but you too have wronged others. Sadly, we have not learned to ask: “Why did this happen, Lord? What do You want to teach me through this? Why did this man hurt me? Why did he wrong me? Why did he accuse me?” Instead, you say, “It is not my fault; I am innocent,” and so on, and you demand justice. Could it be that God allowed this so that you might settle some old debts? Could it be that you owed something, and He is giving you the opportunity to repay it? If a person thought this way, he would never quarrel with anyone. Indeed, he would say, “Thank You, my God, for sending me this person to bring me to my senses.” Sadly, we are far too indulgent with ourselves.
We must recognize that we ourselves need to be chastened. It is part of God’s providential ordering that certain people come into our lives and cause us pain. I say this in connection with everything taking place here within the Ark. It is said that Saint Ephraim the Syrian, a great Father of nepsis and watchfulness from the Desert, was once traveling down to Alexandria. He reached the city in the evening and found the gate closed, so he could not enter. Outside the city, he went to a shepherd who was a friend of his and asked if he could stay there for the night. The shepherd was overjoyed at the thought of offering hospitality to such a great Father of the Church and the Desert. But during the night, thieves broke into the man’s flock and stole many of his sheep, along with other things.
The matter came to the attention of the police in the morning. They arrested Elder Ephraim and put him in prison, suspecting and accusing him of having gone there to distract the shepherd so that others would have the opportunity to rob him. So Ephraim was in prison, along with two other prisoners. They began talking: “How did you end up here? What did you do?” “Nothing, my children.” “That is impossible.” “But I tell you, nothing.” “And you are still a monk? Why do you not cast off your monastic robes?” “Why should I cast them off?” he asked. “Where is God? How could the One you worship leave you here like this? He does not exist. Believe me, my friend, there is no God. The same thing has happened to us. I am here in prison,” one of them said, “even though I have committed no murder, and this man is also in prison even though he has committed no murder.”
“We are both here for murder, and we are both being held unjustly.” When the elder heard this, he knew how the matter could be resolved. That evening, the others lay down to sleep, while he knelt to pray. He said to the Lord, “I will not rise from here unless You tell me what all this means. I did not commit this theft. And these two men, as they themselves say, have not committed murder either. Tell me what is happening and how I am to deal with it, both for my own sake and for theirs.” Before he had even finished speaking, a tall, imposing man appeared. He tapped him on the back, smiled, and asked, “What are you praying about?” “About this and that.” “You think you are here unjustly? That is not so certain. You did not steal. But do you know what you are paying for now?” “What are you talking about? Are you speaking German?”
“You were eleven years old,” he told him, “and you were playing on the field. A poor widow had tethered a young cow, and you went and untied it. The cow wandered off, the butchers took it and slaughtered it, and that widow is still weeping for her cow. That is what you are paying for now.” “What are you saying? I sold everything I owned and gave it to the poor, and I am still in debt?” “You gave those things away as gifts. You did not repay your debt. One is one thing, and the other is another.” “All right,” he said, “so that is what I am paying for now. But what about these men who say they are innocent?” “Do you see the first man sleeping there? He has committed murder.” “But he says he has not.” “Listen,” he told him. “He and another man were cutting wood together by the river. The other man was standing on the riverbank when he slipped and fell in, and he cried out to him...”
“He was right in front of him,” he said, “calling out, ‘Give me something to hold on to!’ But this man did not care; he did not run to help. The river swept the other man away, and he drowned. His death is on this man’s conscience, and it counts as murder. As for the other prisoner,” he continued, “he had a quarrel with the leading man of his village. Since he could not lay a hand on him because the man was powerful, he accused the man’s daughter of being immoral. Christ judged him guilty of spiritual murder.

Γι’ αυτό συμβαίνει: βγαίνει ο ιερεύς στην πύλη και λέει τρία λόγια: «Μετά φόβου Θεού, πίστεως και αγάπης, προσέλθετε». Και ο άνθρωπος κάθεται στο στασίδι του, κάθεται στην καρέκλα του, τα βλέπει από μακριά και νομίζει ότι δεν έχει κανέναν προορισμό. Αυτά λέγονται έτσι εκεί και ως έτυχε, δεν χρειάζονται για μας. Είναι για τους αγιασμένους αυτά. Και εσύ και εγώ πού πηγαίνουμε; Δεν ήρθαμε στην Εκκλησία για να αγιάσουμε; Δεν ήρθαμε στην Εκκλησία να έρθουμε σε επαφή με τον Χριστό; Δεν λέγει σαφώς ότι το αίμα του Ιησού Χριστού καθαρίζει ημάς από πάσης αμαρτίας; Πώς λοιπόν έρχεσαι στην Εκκλησία απροετοίμαστος, ατακτοποίητος;
Παραφίνιο. Αλλά αν είναι κερί από μέλισσα, πραγματικό, γνήσιο —και τέτοιο πρέπει να είναι το κερί που καίει στην Εκκλησία—, να μην είναι θυσία Κάιν, δεν τη δέχεται ο Θεός· να είναι θυσία Άβελ. Και αν η Εκκλησία έχει λόγους οικονομικούς να παίρνει σκάρτο κερί για να διατηρεί τα οικονομικά, διότι οι άνθρωποι δεν προσφέρονται, εσύ να πάρεις κερί καθαρό στο σπίτι σου και να έρθεις να βάλεις το κεράκι σου εδώ, για να το βάλεις στον Θεό σου. Και πρέπει να είναι όχι εκλεκτό, το εκλεκτό. Δώσε τη δραχμή σου εκεί να διατηρηθεί η Εκκλησία. Αλλά το κερί εκείνο να μην το ανάψεις. Φέρε δικό σου εδώ, καθαρό. Παίρνοντας αυτό το κερί από εκεί πέρα, πόθεν το παίρνεις;
Δεν ξέρω πόσα χρόνια έχουν δικαστήρια και πόσα συζητούν εις βάρος άλλων. Ποιον να γελάσεις; Εμένα μπορεί να με γελάσεις, τη μάνα σου μπορεί να τη γελάσεις, η γυναίκα τον άντρα να τον γελάσει, τον εισαγγελέα μπορεί να τον γελάσεις, τον εαυτό σου μπορεί να τον γελάσεις· τον Χριστό δεν Τον γελάς. Δεν φτωχογνωρίζει, τον Χριστό δεν Τον γελάς και δεν σου προσθέτει τις ημέρες, άνθρωπε, για να επεκτείνεις την περιουσία, να κάνεις το «του» «μου», το δικό Του να το κάνεις δικό σου. Το «του» έγινε «σου»; Ούτε του ούτε σου· κοινού. Ούτε δικά μου ούτε δικά σου· δικά Του, εκεί που ήταν. Και αν πέρασες στο υποθηκοφυλακείο ή στο ληξιαρχείο, πού;
με περιμένει και ανέχεται, και με ανέχεται. Με την ανοχή του Χριστού ζούμε, όχι με τη δικαιοσύνη μας. Με την ανοχή του Χριστού ζούμε. Όμως μέχρι πότε; Μέχρι πότε θα μας ανέχεται; Πολλοί νομίζουν, διότι δεν τους κόβει τη μύτη και τ' αυτιά, διότι δεν τους κόβει τη γλώσσα την ώρα που αμαρτάνουν, την ώρα που κατηγορούν, την ώρα που ψεύδονται, την ώρα που χειρονομούν, την ώρα που βλασφημούν, έχουν τη γνώμη ότι ή δεν υπάρχει Θεός ή δεν δύναται ο Θεός. Και υπάρχει και δύναται ο Θεός, αλλά μακροθυμεί ο Θεός. Είναι μια λέξη σύνθετος: μακράν του θυμού. Κοιτάξετε την Ωραία Πύλη. Γιατί λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη;
σε μια μεγάλη ημέρα, να αποδώσει στους μεν κατά αναλογία των έργων των και στους δε κατά αναλογία της κακίας των. Εάν λοιπόν ο άνθρωπος δεν θελήσει να εκμεταλλευτεί αυτόν τον χρόνον της χρηστότητας και της μακροθυμίας και κάτι που μπορεί να το κάνει σήμερα το αναβάλλει για αύριο, και όταν το αύριο γίνει σήμερα το αναβάλλει για την παρακάτω, και έτσι ο σατανάς του κλέβει το παρόν και του υπόσχεται το μέλλον που δεν έχει, τότε θα βρεθεί γελασμένος και θα βρεθεί αντιμέτωπος του Θεού. Και αλλοίμονο από τον άνθρωπο. Καλύτερα να πέσει σε όλους τους εισαγγελείς του κόσμου παρά να πέσει «εἰς χεῖρας Θεοῦ ζῶντος». Να σας βοηθήσω; Κοιτάξτε γύρω-γύρω, όπου υπάρχουν Άγιοι, και σε αυτόν τον Χριστόν ακόμη και στην Παναγία μας. Υπάρχει από ένα καντήλι μπροστά με λαδάκι και καίει. Κοιτάξτε και στο Δεσποτικό εδώ. Καντήλι δεν υπάρχει εδώ. Λάδι δεν καίει. Γιατί δεν μπορούν να βάλουν ένα καντηλάκι πάνω, χρυσόμορφο;
