Summary

The lecture resumes its teaching that sin brings spiritual destruction and that forgiveness is received through the sacramental ministry of the Church’s clergy. The faithful are urged not to accept sensational accusations against clergy uncritically, but to pray for both the accused and their accusers while trusting Christ to preserve His Church. A personal account of a distressed woman’s unexpected deliverance after entrusting her seemingly impossible situation to Christ illustrates the power of humble and persistent prayer.

We were together for the first four talks. You will remember that our subject concerned sin in general and its cure. In the course of these reflections, we reached the point of asking how we could be delivered from sin, since sin is, so to speak, the cause of man’s destruction and, ultimately, of his condemnation to Hell. And we said that there is no way for us to free ourselves from sin by our own means.

It can be done only through the clergy. Of course, many objections arise when the subject of the clergy is discussed. People question whether these men are capable of fulfilling their role, since they too are often sinners. Many people are influenced by what is written—not by what has actually happened, but chiefly by what is written in the press—and by the things so often said and presented mockingly against the clergy. They have lost their trust, and they would rather have these allegations be true, just as they tell them, than admit that they are very often false.

They could simply set these matters aside and continue on their way, just as they do not examine the physician’s personal life but look to his medical knowledge, and do not examine the engineer personally but look to his expertise and employ him for the work they need, regardless of what kind of men they may be. Among the arguments I tried to offer in order to strengthen you in the faith—both those listening to me directly and those who will hear me through these recorded tapes—I gave some examples from the recent actions of people who supposedly agonize over the Church, who claim to be defending the Church and trying to save Her, when they have not even saved themselves. For, as the evidence shows,

those who come forward from time to time to write, speak, accuse, and denounce have no connection whatsoever with the Church. They do not attend church, they do not receive Holy Communion, they have no spiritual father, and they live no Christian life at all. How, then, can they care about things in which they do not believe? Can their concern possibly be sincere? No. But because we are not in a position to investigate these matters, and because the Church often gives no answer—and even when She does, these people do not print Her answer in the newspapers with the enormous headlines they use for their own claims—they may print some response in tiny letters, tucked away in a corner so that it passes unnoticed. The accusation appears in enormous type, while the defense

is printed in letters so small that even those who printed them could hardly make them out. Now, regarding the accusation against Metropolitan Prokopios of Kefalonia in the matter of Saint Gerasimos, I told you that I had evidence, although I did not have it with me that evening. So, in keeping with what I told you then, I shall now read what the committee—three medical specialists—reported in their expert examination after visiting and examining the relic which, as the Kefalonians claim in enormous newspaper headlines, had been “dismembered.”

These Kefalonians, supposedly so devout, claimed to be concerned for their Saint and created this entire affair. Yet, as their own evidence shows, the story is false from beginning to end. The specialists who went there and conducted the examination say nothing of the sort in their report, in the document they prepared and the opinion they issued. They do not say that the Saint’s relic has been dismembered. The Saint was where he is now, and he will certainly remain there. After all, why would anyone do such a thing? Who buys relics? What would anyone do with them? What would I do—go and spend thousands, enticing someone to sell me a piece? What would I do with it? And where, in any case, are those who discovered that something was missing? Where is this missing piece, if it is nowhere to be found? No, I do not think anything is missing. It is not missing.

The things they will resort to in order to mislead the public are beyond belief. First, I shall read to you from the trial of the man who is currently portraying the Bishop of Preveza in his play, making millions from it while leading souls into condemnation. People are weak; they never take an interest in learning the faith. Instead, they tend to believe whatever is presented to them today in the name of freedom, so-called democracy, and unrestrained license, and souls are being lost every day. Listen to a passage from Kollatos’s play, even as the trial itself is taking place. At the top he writes the title:

“The Axe: Prokopios of Kefalonia,” followed by two more scenes from the play. In Mr. Kollatos’s play, Metropolitan Prokopios of Kefalonia appears on stage together with nuns from the Holy Monastery of Saint Gerasimos. They begin announcing prices for the Saint’s sacred relic. The play presents the Metropolitan holding an axe, while the nuns of Saint Gerasimos call out the price of each part of the Saint’s body: “Five toes from the left foot, five hundred thousand drachmas.” It is presented as though this were an auction. “Twelve ribs from the left side at fifty thousand drachmas each, making six hundred thousand.”

Twelve times fifty thousand makes six hundred thousand. “Twelve ribs from the right side at sixty thousand each, making seven hundred and twenty thousand,” and so on. The play depicts them cutting out the ribs and selling the left ribs for fifty thousand each and the right ribs for sixty thousand each. Then the lights go out during this performance. The Metropolitan of Kefalonia takes an axe in his hands and brandishes it. He begins, so to speak, sharpening and striking with the axe. In the darkness, the audience hears the heavy blows of the axe as the sacred relic of Saint Gerasimos is supposedly hacked into pieces. And so the public—the theater audience—hears the axe falling and cutting through

the Saint’s ribs, which Prokopios of Kefalonia supposedly sells. The trial continues, and we come to another passage. Kollatos’s defense—his lawyers and the others—asks, “Is it not true that the sacred relic of Saint Gerasimos in Kefalonia was cut into pieces and sold?” The witness replies, “Nothing has yet been proved. The case is still before the courts.” But the defense, Kollatos’s lawyers, says, “And yet an expert examination was conducted, and it proved that pieces are missing from the Saint’s relic.” An expert examination was indeed conducted, so they clearly know about that examination.

They are familiar with the expert report. Listen, then, to what the physicians’ report actually says about the relic that was supposedly cut apart—twelve ribs from one side, ten from the other, feet, heads, and so forth. I am reading the exact wording used at the trial. The newspaper Akropolis obtained the expert report of the physicians Georgios Avlamis, Panagiotis Michas, and Ioannis Antonatos, who examined the sacred relic of Saint Gerasimos the previous Sunday. Three medical specialists went there, led by Mr. Avlamis. He is the man about whom it is said—as I told you the other day—that when he examined the Saint and felt for his pulse, he heard it beating, and the man

did not lose his mind, but remained in shock for twenty days. That is the report coming from there. I was not present, so I cannot tell you this as an eyewitness. In this report, the physicians state that they observed the following: “In the left submandibular region”—here, beneath the jaw—“there is a loss of soft tissue, allowing the bone of the lower jaw to be seen. This is due to deterioration caused by the passage of time.” After four hundred years, there has been some deterioration beneath the jaw. So far, then, there is tissue loss, but nothing more. Second, both feet show areas of tissue loss on the soles caused by time. In other words, the underside on which we stand has been worn away; the sole of the Saint’s foot has deteriorated. But medical science says that this too was caused by time, so nothing was removed from there either. Third, the big toe of the left foot is entirely missing. Where is it? Was anyone present when the Saint’s relics were exhumed who can tell us that the mattock did not strike and sever that toe at the time? I myself was present at the exhumation of a relic that exists intact to this day.

Because we did not know what we would find below, the spade struck the finger and brought out this bone here, which we have—and in fact we keep it in our home—while two other people have the remaining part. The spade struck it. If that relic were examined now, people would say that the finger had been cut off and sold. Likewise, one of the toes was struck by the spade. It too was found, and the girl’s parents have it. Consequently, no one can tell us whether the big toe of the left foot was still there throughout those four hundred years, or even from the beginning. The report says nothing about that. They simply say that the toe of the left foot is missing. Fourth,

the dorsal surface—excuse me. Fourth, the little finger of the right hand is missing from its base. The absence of the right hand’s little finger from the base was confirmed. But the Saint’s little finger has been kept at the Metropolis of Kefalonia for a hundred years as a blessing. It had been requested from the monastery and remains there to this day. The report does not mention that, but the finger exists.

Fifth, on the upper surface of the right foot, near its outer edge, an area of skin is missing. Skin is missing—not dismemberment, axes, hatchets, and all the rest. As I said, it is an area of missing skin, ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide. In other words, it has been scraped away, as we might say, and on visual examination it bears the characteristics

of a relatively recent detachment. That is, compared with the rest of the skin, this missing piece appears to have been removed at a later time.

For example, something appears to be missing from the underside of the foot, from the sole. The report says this was caused by time; it is worn away. They already acknowledge that this is due to age. The toe, of course, is missing, but it is in the church I mentioned to you, the metropolitan cathedral in Argostoli. As for the other toe, I do not know how it came to be missing. But when was this skin removed? If we accept that the rest of the body is four hundred years old, while someone tore away this piece of skin two hundred years ago, would there not be a visible difference? Must it have happened yesterday for it to look more recent? Even if there were a difference of two hundred years between one area and the other, would that difference not be visible?

Even if the difference were only a hundred years, there would still be a difference between the two. So, here is the conclusion: “The impression of a relatively recent detachment arises”—this is what they mean by calling it recent—“from comparison with a similar adjacent lesion.” There was another damaged area on the body, and by comparing the two they concluded that this piece was removed somewhat later and was therefore more recent, while the other injury was clearly older. In his written defense, however, Metropolitan Prokopios states, concerning this supposedly recent removal of a piece ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide, that the comparison was made with another piece which

had become detached four hundred years ago. Therefore, the detachment of the newer piece would appear recent even if it had occurred a hundred years ago. “But I,” the Metropolitan emphasizes, “have served as bishop in Kefalonia for only fourteen years.” Where, then, is the Saint supposed to be missing? Where are the axes? Where are the knives? Where are the saws? Where are all the crashing blows presented by that gentleman? You understand how matters truly stand. The Saint is there. The only point that might be questioned is that a strip of skin ten centimeters long is missing from his foot. But when was it removed—during these past fourteen years, or at some point during the other three hundred and eighty-six?

After all this, how is the public to know what to believe from what it sees and hears? And what is the reality? They themselves have printed it. But look at how they printed it: so small that you could hardly read it even with a magnifying glass. The other things were printed beneath enormous headlines in order to accuse. That is why I told you: whenever you hear matters concerning the clergy, do not become involved. Say your prayer, keep your mouth closed, and walk away. The unfortunate people are not the clergy, but those who play this role. When clergymen are accused, an opportunity is given to them: if they are guilty, they can repent and be saved; if they are accused unjustly, they will become sanctified. It is an opportunity for them to become holy.

If a clergyman is not persecuted, how will he become holy? If a Christian is not persecuted, how will he become holy? That is why those who persecute Christians are, in general, their benefactors. But we do not understand this; we take up arms over it. And because many clergymen do not defend themselves but allow themselves to be accused, others assume they are guilty. Yet here we have their own evidence. Mr. Kollatos, since you know the findings of these medical experts—one of whom, Antonatos, is himself from Kefalonia—and since they say that the relic is there, how can you invent axes, strike and cut it up, and sell twelve ribs and ten ribs, at fifty thousand drachmas for each rib and sixty thousand for each rib on the right?

And then you make a joke about democracy and the junta, with the right side costing more! So I was not wrong when I told you to be careful. If you wish, be watchful and pray also for those who fall into temptation. For from the moment you step forward wearing the cassock, expect to be spat upon; expect to be stoned; expect to be crucified; expect to be hanged, as they did to Christ—as they did to Christ. And if we examine all those who supposedly labor for the purification of the Church—was Kollatos really concerned about purifying the Church? Let him first see to purifying himself.

Let him repent, come to his senses, withdraw somewhere, take up a prayer rope, and cry out day and night: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, the foremost of sinners and a wretched man; and besides me, preserve all those souls whose ruin I have brought upon myself, so that I might make money from my unbelief.” It is quite another thing to involve yourself in the affairs of the Church. So believe only half of what you hear—and none of what you see.

None of it. This is a very serious matter. I had a duty to bring it to your attention, to remind you of it, and to confirm that what I told you the other day was true. And I have proved it from their own writings. Now, if you wish, take it up and read it again; go back again, or turn on the television and watch this play, because it will spread further.

It will spread just as the works of Kazantzakis and others have spread. This play will be idolized; it will reach television and spare no one. This gentleman himself will be glorified as a god. That is how things are—fabricated, entangled, and arranged. These are evil and treacherous days. No one is going to help us. Do not look for anything else. Kneel down and entreat Christ. Christ desires their salvation; He does not desire their punishment or their destruction. Even if they are Judases, He still desires their salvation. That is precisely why He employs every means. Do not be scandalized and ask, “Where is God?” He is God; He is in no danger. If I go outside and spit at the sun, the spittle will fall back onto my own face. God is in no danger.

Do not be scandalized. Include this, then, in your prayers: ask Him to shelter the clergy and protect the cassock, whether it is worn in the mountains or in the city. For if the cassock disappears—the cassock that strikes fear into Satan—we shall all be lost. And we will understand this when we die.

There will be no cassock there to read the Trisagion prayers over us. Then we shall understand what the cassock means, what Orthodoxy means, what monasticism means, what a hierarch means, and so forth. Then we shall understand, but by then it will be too late. So that it may not be too late, let us avoid taking either side, keep this matter before us, and use the arguments I have given you, so that people may understand what is happening and what this is really about. That completes what I owed you from the previous lesson. Now I wanted to speak again this evening about sin and the way it is healed. Following the Church, I insist that there is no forgiveness of sins outside the Church. No one else can forgive sins.

Only the clergy have received this commission and act on God’s behalf. Whether the priest himself is holy or not, he forgives the sins of the person who repents and confesses.

Many people hear what I am saying and become troubled and anxious; often they even fall into discouragement, because they have become so entangled in sin that they cannot separate themselves from it. They find themselves, as we say, with a precipice ahead and a torrent behind. They want to abandon sin, but they cannot. They want to break their ties with people who are living in sin, but they cannot free themselves from them. So they stand there asking, “What am I going to do?” They reach the point of despair, and despair—what we call despondency—is a mortal sin. We must always avoid it. When Alexander the Great stood before the Gordian Knot,

no one had succeeded in untying that Gordian Knot, and neither could Alexander himself. So he drew his sword and said, “What cannot be untied must be cut,” and with his sword he cut through the knot. That is what is needed: courage is needed, and Christ is needed, with His own sword. I think you know that Alexander the Great was a type of Christ. Though he came from paganism and from among the nations, he was a type of Christ. He too died at the age of thirty-three, and he acted on Christ’s behalf when he undertook that campaign and reached those distant lands. It was no accident that Alexander the Great went there. Hellenism went there; our language went there. How else did names such as Luke, John, and Thomas come to be found there? They were Greek names.

They were found there. Many people do not know what exactly happened when he reached Jerusalem. Since I have touched upon this, and because you may be shocked—for unfortunately we rush to judgment without knowledge of these matters—I want to deliver you from that temptation. When Alexander the Great reached Jerusalem, he dismounted from his horse and bowed before the Jewish high priest. The Jewish high priest kissed him and gave him the keys to the city. He offered no resistance and did not wage war against Jerusalem; the city surrendered to him. That evening a banquet was held. All the officers of Alexander’s staff were there, along with the representatives of the city who accompanied the high priest. But one man stubbornly refused to sit at the table.

It was Alexander the Great’s aide, Parmenion. He had been grumbling, and Alexander had noticed him; Parmenion considered what had happened entirely improper. When the banquet ended, Alexander demanded an explanation for his behavior. Parmenion answered him boldly: “How could I sit at a table after witnessing such servility on your part?” Alexander said, “Where did you see servility?” Parmenion replied, “From the time we set out until we arrived here, we never dismounted from our horses. But then I saw you dismount, bow down before a priest, and after that I could not sit at such a table.” Alexander the Great answered him: “If you knew what God told me yesterday evening

about this priest and this city, you too would have dismounted. And instead of making three prostrations before him, you would have made a hundred and three.” Alexander the Great had been told by God that this city belonged to God, that he was not to harm it, and that its people would give him the keys to the city. At the same time, the high priest was inquiring of God through the ephod—that is another matter—asking whether he should fight, resist, or what he should do. And God told him to surrender it: “This man who is coming belongs to Me.” So he went out to meet him. At the place where Alexander the Great met the high priest, a monument still stands today, on the slope of Little Galilee, below the Patriarch’s residence, commemorating that meeting. Therefore, I say, if a person desires

Christ’s help, he must cut himself off from sin and be delivered from it. I will tell you about something that happened in my own life. I once gave a talk at Saint Artemios, in Gouva, in the Sarthina district. It was a Wednesday. When I had finished, I set out on foot for home. The walk was about fifteen minutes. It was dusk when a woman approached me—a single woman, perhaps; I do not know what her circumstances were—about forty or forty-five years old. I did not know her, but she had been in the audience. She said to me, “Mr. Panagopoulos, everything you said this evening was meant for me.”

“Then why do you add a ‘but’?” I asked. “Because these things cannot be done. I want them to happen, but they cannot.” And she began to weep, because a struggle was raging within her. I said, “Do not cry, and do not let Satan deceive you. The very fact that you are still breathing is proof from our Christ that He is waiting for you. Do not let the devil deceive you into believing there is no solution. Even if there is no solution for you, there is one for Him. If your case had already been settled for evil, He would find a way to take you from this life so that you might commit fewer sins. God is love, and even for someone who is going to Hell, He desires that his Hell be less severe.”

“It is impossible. It cannot happen. I cannot free myself from sin.” I said, “Keep asking Christ.” “It is impossible,” she replied, bringing human reasoning into it. “What do you mean? Is it impossible for Christ? Have you reduced Him to the level of a mere man? It may be impossible for me, impossible for you, impossible for the whole world, and impossible for Satan—but it is not impossible for Christ.” To make a long story short, we walked about a kilometer until we reached the area near her home. She continued to weep and sob. I realized that I had to part from her, because if people saw Panagopoulos at night, in the darkness, with a woman who was crying, they might be scandalized. I told her, “I have one last thing to say, and then I am finished. I do not know what prayers you have offered until today or how you have asked God. But I will suggest one way.”

“Tonight say whatever you wish; or if you do not want to say anything else, then say nothing else. But say this: ‘Lord, Panagopoulos told me that You can bring me out of this dead end. I want to escape, but I cannot. Yet he told me that You can deliver me. Do whatever You judge best. I fall at Your feet.’ Remember, I told her, these do not have to be your exact words. Even if you do not say these words, pray with this spirit. Good night; I cannot stay with you any longer.” Then I went on my way. She turned back utterly broken, like a living corpse. I did not know whether she could even make it home. In any case, the days passed, and I continued giving my other talks. The following Wednesday I went back and spoke again. Of course, I had not been thinking about this incident. And then this happened:

When I left, it was dusk again. I heard quick footsteps approaching, and then she said, “Good evening, Mr. Panagopoulos.” I turned and saw that it was the same woman I had spoken with the previous Wednesday. “A miracle has happened,” she told me. “Give glory to God,” I replied. “Let me tell you about it.” “I do not want you to tell me anything. I believe that Christ lives, and that is why I advised you to turn directly to Him.”

I knew nothing about the matter. I had neither recognized her nor paid any particular attention to her. I did not know who she was, and I did not want to know. I understood that demons were involved; perhaps it concerned a man or a woman—I did not know, and I did not want to know. Seven years passed. After those seven years, a devout married couple invited my wife and me to dine with them. I had resisted going for some time, but finally agreed because there was another matter that required me to visit that home. After we had eaten, the lady took me aside and said, “Would you like to learn about something from seven years ago that has remained a mystery to you?” “Nothing has remained a mystery to me,” I said. “I do not want to know anything.” “But you must know.” “I do not want to know.” “You must know. You will find it astonishing.” Events unfolded in such a way that I finally had to give in and say, “Very well, tell me the story.”

She said to me, “Do you remember a certain woman who approached you after your talk at Saint Artemios and told you such-and-such? Do you remember what you said to her? Do you remember how she told you the following week that a miracle had happened, and all the rest?” I replied, “Yes, I remember all of that.”

“Listen,” she said to me, “and I’ll tell you what the miracle was.” “That,” I said, “is precisely what I don’t want you to tell me.” “I’m going to tell you.” In any case, perhaps it was God’s will for me to learn about it, because it might prove useful one day. The story is anonymous. I know neither the people nor the details. So she continued: “That woman lived nearby with her sister and brother-in-law. They had a house with a large courtyard, surrounded by several other rooms.”

They rented those rooms out. The woman was separated from her husband and living alone. Among their tenants was a truck driver, with whom she was committing sin.

From the time I began going to that neighborhood, to Saint Artemios, and preaching sermons of metanoia—repentance—she came and heard the truth about such matters: life is not simply about having a good time and indulging ourselves; our actions have consequences. She repented. But how could she escape from this man? He threatened her: “If you stop giving in to me, I’ll tell your sister and brother-in-law everything.” That would have ruined them. So, under this blackmail, she was forced to continue sinning. That was why she kept telling me, “It’s impossible.” Could she evict him? He lived there for fifty drachmas a month, and rent-control laws were in force at the time.

There was no way to make him leave, and so she sinned against her will. Until then she had wanted it, but now she had learned the truth and no longer wanted it, yet she could not escape. Sin is a grave matter and has two sides: outwardly, it coerces you; inwardly, it entices you. In any case, what do you think happened? The next morning, after she had prayed that night, the man took his truck and drove up Syngrou Avenue. When he reached the Temple of Olympian Zeus, where the columns stand, another vehicle came from Dionysiou Areopagitou Street on his left, and they collided. The fault lay with the truck driver, who had been driving up the avenue without paying attention. When the vehicles struck, they both stopped dead, like two rams locking horns. He leapt out and disappeared, leaving his truck behind. He was so frightened that he never even returned to collect a camp bed he had there, or a wooden suitcase—

a wooden suitcase of his—nothing at all. He left behind an old pair of shoes, a shirt, and everything else. The man vanished from the face of the earth because he was afraid. He had no license, no insurance—I do not know exactly what was wrong—and he was never seen again. In this way, she was delivered from him, and she was even able to rent the room to a new tenant. That is God. Sadly, we never turn to Him first. Satan entraps you on the one hand, gains power over you, and then begins to threaten you. Under the fear Satan creates, a person continues to sin. He says to a married couple, “Don’t have children. How will you manage? What will happen? You’ll have to educate them, and look at what the world is like,” and so on. He terrifies them and gets them into his grasp. They stop having children and destroy their relationship with God. Then see how well you manage—unless you fall to your knees and say, “My Christ,

can You not provide for me? You who feed and sustain all things—can anything prevent You? Can You not provide for me? Please help me to be delivered from this.” Then consolation, strength, and the solution to these difficulties will enter a person’s nous, the spiritual mind. Sadly, however, we have not asked Him. On the one hand, Satan gets us into his grasp, and afterward we cannot stop a particular sin. On the other hand, when we try to leave, he begins threatening us and driving us to despair, so that we will not escape and, if possible, will never abandon the sin. I do not know whether you have noticed this: a person’s condemnation to Hell does not depend on many sins, but on sin. I do not need to have a million sins to go to Hell. If I have one sin, I will go to Hell. How many sins did Eve commit? One.

Not only did she lose Paradise, but she also crucified God, because Eve’s one sin brought God to the Cross. Am I lying? How many sins turned the angels into demons? How many? One. Not even an act of sin, but a thought—one thought. The demons had been angels. How did they become demons? Satan conceived the thought of setting his throne above the throne of God. That self-centered pride, that arrogance, cast him into Tartarus and turned him from white to black. He too committed one sin. There is no need for many sins. One sin is enough to shut a person out. For a ship to sink, must the whole ship be full of holes?

One hole is enough to sink it. The other day I gave you another example: for this chandelier to fall and shatter into a million pieces, must every link of its chain be cut? Only one needs to break. And what does John the Theologian say? If you keep the whole law but stumble in one point, you are guilty of breaking the whole law. Take a garden. A woman tends it beautifully and has it fenced in. One morning she goes inside and finds everything turned upside down, and she tears her hair out. What happened? The gate is shut; everything is closed and properly secured. But down in one corner, the neighbor’s little pig slipped through a tiny hole and smashed everything to pieces. If sin enters through even one opening, it is capable of enslaving a person and holding him fast. There is an old story—

about a queen named Semiramis. She kept asking the king to let her govern the kingdom for one day, so that she too could see what it was like and how a person felt when ruling over millions of people. But he told her, “These are matters for men; it cannot be done.” She refused to give up and persisted for years: “You don’t love me,” and this and that, constantly wearing him down, trying to persuade him to let her reign for just one day. Finally, after many years of her asking again and again, as we say, he gave in. He decided to entrust her with the great seal of the kingdom—

to give her his signet ring and allow her to issue a decree stating that, on the following day, she would rule as queen. For one day, the queen’s decrees would have the force of law and everyone would obey them. At last, the day for which she had struggled and schemed for so many years arrived, and she became queen. She sat upon the throne and began issuing decrees. The very first decree she issued and signed ordered that the king be arrested and put to death immediately. And the foolish king, who had yielded to sin—to Semiramis—was arrested and removed from the scene. That is what sin is like. Once you sin, even a single time...

you become a slave. Sin rules over you, and then it becomes what we call a second nature—a habit. Wine becomes a habit; a woman becomes a habit; a man becomes a habit; gambling becomes a habit; blasphemy becomes a habit; theft becomes a habit—habit upon habit. Now who will cleanse all this? Who can put everything right? Christ alone; only the true Alexander the Great, Christ.

He is the One who will cleanse it all. So I do not know what state you are in with regard to the devil—whether he has you in his grasp or not. Only metanoia, repentance, can save you. Consider the great figures who sinned. David sinned, committed adultery, and carried out premeditated murder. He was not some ordinary, uncultivated man. He was David: a prophet and ruler, an educated man, a prophet and king. Yet he fell into two deadly sins, one after the other. What saved him? Repentance. He admitted his sin, confessed it, and was saved. Do you know how his repentance came about? When he fell, God sent Nathan the prophet to hear his confession and help him. Nathan the prophet put a question to him in the form of a parable. He said, “My king, I have come to ask your judgment on a serious matter, because I do not know how to answer it. There was a rich man who had everything he could possibly desire at his disposal, and yet he did the following.”

“Some visitors came to him, and he went and took a ewe lamb from his poor neighbor. He slaughtered it and feasted with his friends, even though he could have provided the feast in a thousand other ways. What do you say about this?” David answered, “A man who commits such an injustice and takes the poor man’s ewe lamb deserves to die.” Nathan told him, “You are that man, O king. You sent Uriah the officer to his death, and then you took Bathsheba for yourself.” David answered, “I have sinned against the Lord.” He admitted it at once. He did not say, “What are you talking about? Watch your words, and remember whom you are speaking to”—the sort of lies we tell. At once he said, “I have sinned against the Lord”; in other words, “What I have done is sin in the sight of God.” Nathan replied, “And the Lord has put away your sin.”

A prophet hears the confession of a prophet, and on God’s behalf the prophet grants forgiveness to the prophet. “And the Lord”—not I—“the Lord has put away your sin,” because David admitted it. So when a prophet and king confesses to a prophet and receives God’s forgiveness through a prophet, how can I go and tell my sins to an icon, or shout them to the waves, or tell them to my lord Saint George and my Lady, the Most Holy Theotokos? Do they grant forgiveness? Have they been given that authority? Where would it come from? They do not possess it, nor did they ever ask for it. Only the priest, only the clergy—and not for their own sins, no. The priest is a spiritual father and confessor, but he cannot forgive his own sins, as I told you yesterday. Is he a Patriarch? He must go and confess to someone else. Is he a bishop?

He must confess to a priest, a monk, or another bishop. He cannot absolve himself. That is precisely why Scripture says, as I mentioned the other day, “Confess your trespasses to one another, that you may be healed.” The Protestants bring us this verse and say, “There, you see? It says that we must tell our sins to one another.” This is addressed to the priests, not to all of us. And even if you insist on applying “to one another” to everyone in the world, then do not bring your sins to me; tell them to one another. Go to the person who has the authority to forgive your sins, and if you can obtain forgiveness elsewhere, then so be it—but do not go to just anyone. When you are in pain, you go to a doctor. You do not go to a layman, to a private individual who has no medical knowledge. When your electricity fails, you call an electrician. When your plumbing breaks, you call a plumber. So when your soul is sick, how can you go to some random person, tell him everything, or come and tell it all to me? What comes of that? Today people tell everything to a psychiatrist, but not to the priest.

What happens? They feel relief for a moment, but afterward they pick up their little sack of burdens and carry it away with them again. And so you see suicides and depression, and all the psychiatric hospitals are full. Why? Because the spiritual father has been pushed aside; people no longer make use of the priest’s stole in Holy Confession. The spiritual father is the only one able to put the matters of the soul in order and reduce this problem to a minimum. Today, homes abroad are full of psychiatrists. If you heard a United Nations statistic about how many mentally ill people there are in the world, your hair would stand on end. Their specialized statistics report that by the year 2000 there will be two hundred million mentally ill people in the world.

What does it say? Mental illness has begun to abound in our world. Today the number of people suffering from psychiatric illness has reached 120 million, and by the end of the century it will reach 200 million. These figures were made public by the International Labour Organization, whose report emphasizes that mental disorders are tending to become one of society’s most serious problems. According to the report, cases of mental illness are increasing annually at a rate three percent higher than the growth of the earth’s population. In the United States, for example—

approximately …000 Americans are residents of various psychiatric institutions. Every year, three million British people consult their family doctors with symptoms requiring psychiatric care. Of these, 600,000 are referred by general practitioners to specialist neurologists and psychiatrists, and 250,000 are admitted to psychiatric hospitals. Soon we will be in danger—and indeed, we already are. You do not know who the person next to you is or what he might do, as we read in the newspapers every day. Why is this happening? Because people have no relationship with a priest. What can we do with a psychiatrist? Going to a psychiatrist is like eating without ever becoming full. The psychiatrist will listen and give you some relief; he provides psychological disclosure, but he does not have the power to lift the burden from you.

And so you take your pills again in order to sleep and calm down. This is what I am saying: never assume that sins will simply be put in order by themselves. Sins were confessed even in the Old Testament. If you want to find confession in the Old Testament, turn to the fifth chapter of Numbers. You can also turn to another chapter that I will give you in a moment—in Joshua, forgive me, not Deuteronomy—in Joshua, chapter 7, verse 19, where you will hear the following. Joshua was conducting a military campaign and told his army, “When we enter this place, you are not to steal anything, plunder anything, or take anything—”

“no spoils.” One of them, named Achan, if I remember correctly—or perhaps Achas—stole several gold objects and secretly put them in his bag. His deed was revealed. When it came to light, the matter was brought before Moses. The man was to be stoned. If he repented and confessed, he would be delivered. And Moses said to him, “My son, give glory now to the Lord, the God of Israel, and confess to Him”—to the Lord—“and tell me now what you have done.” You confess it to Him, but you will tell it to me.

He is present before you. You are not confessing to me; you are speaking to the Lord in my presence. Do you understand? When we confess, we do not confess to the priest. The priest is an instrument. Have you heard what the devil says? He tells you that when you confess, you are confessing to the priest. So people even search for some lenient priest, one who will permit them to have abortions, permit them not to fast, and permit such things. They look for an easygoing priest.

We go to obtain the blessing by deception so that we can receive Holy Communion. You are mistaken. Are you speaking to Manolis? You are speaking to Emmanuel. And this is precisely what applies here: “Confess to Him, and tell me.” Tell me now, here in my presence. What have you done? “Do not hide it from me.” Do not conceal it. Yet you are confessing to Him, because I minister on His behalf. You will find what I am telling you in Joshua 7:19. You will also find the passage I mentioned in Numbers 5:5–8. There again, the person is called to confess. If a person commits even one sin, he will be condemned to Hell. Besides the things I have already told you, do you know how many transgressions Satan committed? One. Do you know that Moses did not enter the Promised Land?

Do you know that Moses, although he beheld God, sinned once, and God judged that he would not enter the Promised Land and brought his life to an end? You have read it. You will find these things in your Old Testament, in the passages concerning Moses.

You will find it in Deuteronomy 21:18–21, and also in Numbers 33:38. Then, in Deuteronomy 34:1–7, you will find the account of his death. You will see what God told him to do, how he failed to do it, and how he died. You will find the account of his death there. God granted him only this: to climb a mountain and see the Promised Land from afar. But he did not enter it. That is precisely why Joshua succeeded him, as you know. Moses did not enter the Promised Land. Why? God had told him to command the rock to bring forth water. Yet, yielding to human fear that perhaps the rock would not bring forth water and the Hebrews would stone him—for until then God had always told him to strike the rock—he stood before it and said:

“The Lord says that I should speak to the rock. But what if it does not bring forth water?” So he struck it. The rock brought forth water, and the Hebrews drank, but God took him by the ear, as it were, and said, “Did you not take Me into account? You too will not enter the Promised Land.” All this for one sin. And do we expect to enter—we who have overturned everything, who do not even know what we have done in our lives, and who still refuse to repent? I am sorry—sorry that I speak in this tone—but this is how things are. Let us stop here for tonight, and, God willing, we will continue tomorrow evening.

αργότερα βγαλμένο. Παραδείγματι, στο πόδι φαίνεται ότι κάτι λείπει από κάτω, απ’ το πέλμα. Αυτό, λέει, είναι απ’ τον χρόνο. Εδώ λείπει, είναι φθαρμένο. Ήδη λένε ότι είναι από τον χρόνο. Το δάχτυλο βέβαια λείπει και είναι στον ναό που σας είπα, τον μητροπολιτικό του Αργοστολίου. Το άλλο δάχτυλο εγώ δεν ξέρω πώς και λείπει. Αυτό το δέρμα πότε βγήκε; Αν παραδεχτούμε ότι το υπόλοιπο σώμα είναι 400 ετών και αυτό το δέρμα το ξέσκισε κάποιος προ 200 ετών, δεν θα φαίνεται μια διαφορά; Είναι ανάγκη να είναι χθεσινό για να φαίνεται ότι είναι νεότερο; Και 200 χρόνια αν είναι το ένα από το άλλο, δεν θα υπάρχει μια διαφορά;

είχε αποσπαστεί εδώ και 400 χρόνια. Επομένως, η απόσπαση του νέου τεμαχίου θα φαίνεται πρόσφατη και αν αυτή έχει γίνει έστω και πριν από 100 χρόνια. Εγώ όμως, υπογραμμίζει ο Μητροπολίτης, αρχιερατεύω στην Κεφαλληνία μόνο 14 χρόνια. Πού λείπει, λοιπόν, ο Άγιος; Πού τα τσεκούρια; Πού τα μαχαίρια; Πού τα πριόνια; Πού οι γδούποι του κυρίου αυτού; Καταλαβαίνετε πώς έχουν τα θέματα. Ο Άγιος είναι εκεί πέρα. Εκείνο που είναι επιλήψιμον είναι ότι λείπει από το ποδάρι του δέρμα 10 εκατοστών. Πότε όμως; Τώρα, στα 14, ή στα 386 που υπάρχουν επίσης;

Όχι μόνον έχασε τον Παράδεισο, αλλά εσταύρωσε και τον Θεό. Διότι η μία αμαρτία της Εύας εσταύρωσε τον Θεό. Ή λέω ψέματα; Πόσες αμαρτίες έκαναν τους Αγγέλους διαβόλους; Πόσες αμαρτίες; Μία. Όχι αμαρτία, σκέψη. Σκέψη. Σατανάδες ήταν άγγελοι. Και πώς έγιναν διάβολοι; Διότι έβαλε ο σατανάς τη σκέψη του να θέσει τον θρόνο του υπεράνω του θρόνου του Θεού. Ο εγωισμός αυτός, η έπαρσις αυτή, τον εταρτάρωσε και από λευκόν τον έκανε μαύρο. Μία αμαρτία έκανε και αυτός. Δεν είναι ανάγκη να γίνουν πολλές αμαρτίες. Μία αμαρτία να γίνει, είναι αρκετή να τον κλείσει έξω. Για να βυθιστεί ένα πλοίο πρέπει όλο το πλοίο να κάνει τρύπες;

Προφήτης εξομολογεί προφήτη και, για λογαριασμό του Θεού, ο προφήτης συγχωρεί τον προφήτη. «Και ο Κύριος», όχι εγώ, «ο Κύριος παρέβλεψε το αμάρτημά σου», διότι το παραδέχθηκε. Όταν, λοιπόν, ένας προφήτης και βασιλιάς εξομολογείται σε προφήτη και συγχωρείται διά προφήτου από τον Θεό, πώς εγώ θα πάω στην εικόνα να τα πω και να τα πω στα σαράντα κύματα και να τα πω στον αφέντη τον Άη Γιώργη και στην Κυρά την Παναγιά; Συγχωράνε αυτοί; Έχουν κανένα δικαίωμα; Πού το βρήκανε; Πού δεν το βρήκανε; Ούτε το ζήτησαν. Μόνον ο ιερεύς, μόνον ο κλήρος, και όχι τα δικά του, τα δικά του όχι. Ο παπάς είναι πνευματικός, εξομολόγος. Τα δικά του δεν μπορεί να τα συγχωρεί, όπως σας είπα εγώ χθες. Είναι Πατριάρχης; Θα πάει να εξομολογηθεί σε άλλον. Είναι Επίσκοπος;
