Summary

Three parables portray sinners who multiply their burdens, good works emptied by vainglory, and pride that prevents a humble entrance into God’s temple. Returning to Christ requires restitution, forgiveness, confession, and the humbling admission that every good gift comes from God. Repentance must be joined to sacramental confession before a spiritual father, because salvation requires concrete conversion rather than private words or religious appearances.

The subjects we have been discussing these evenings may sound rather strange to many people, but that is how things are. However much we may want to put them right, we will not be able to do so unless we ourselves choose to entrust them to the One who can put them right—and that One, as we have said, is our Lord Jesus Christ. The truth is that a person recognizes this, as we said in the first part, on the first evening.

Things are not going well, yet he persists. He refuses to change, and so, of course, his behavior becomes utterly inconsistent. Once, God sent an angel to an ascetic. The angel said to him, “Come with me, and I will show you the strange ways of the world.” He took him along, and as they went on, they came upon a man who had cut wood in the forest and was struggling to load it onto his back. At last he tied it together and tried to stand up, but it was too heavy and he could not rise.

He put down that pile, as we call it, went and cut still more wood, placed it on top, and again tried to lift it. But if he could not lift the first load, when it was smaller, could he possibly lift the larger one? Again he put it down, cut still more wood, added it to the load, and once more tried to lift it. He was determined to get it up. “Leave him,” the angel said. “Let us go.” They went a little farther and found a man drawing water from a well. He lowered his bucket into a well of crystal-clear water, but brought no water up at all, because the bucket had a hole in it. Yet he kept lowering it and pulling it up again.

It came back empty every time. By the time it reached the top, the bucket was empty. Yet the man kept lowering it and drawing it up again, without bringing up any water. “Leave him,” the angel said. “Let us go.” They left him too and continued on. Farther down stood a beautiful little church which, strangely enough, had a very low doorway. Then a horseman appeared, mounted on his horse and holding a spear before him. He had turned the spear sideways and was trying to enter.

He would not dismount and enter humbly; he wanted to ride inside on horseback. He would have had to turn the shaft lengthwise in order to get through. The ascetic had now seen the first man, the second, and the third. “What are all these strange things you have shown me?” he asked. “Why did you show them to me? What do you wish to teach me through them?” The angel replied, “I want to teach you that this is what the world is like. You saw the first man, who could not lift the wood. Instead of reducing the load, he added more to it. That is what people are like. They have sins, and instead of reducing them, they add still more. They recognize that they have sins. They recognize that many of the things they do are wrong, yet instead of stopping them, reducing them, and rooting them out, they add still more. That is the world.”

Let each of us examine himself. “The other man you saw,” the angel continued, “who drew up the bucket but had nothing when it reached the top, represents people who do good works but, in the end, will find nothing in their hands. Some act out of vainglory; others do good in order to make people indebted to them; still others give from what they have stolen. They do not give from their own surplus or with humility. They may donate to churches so that their name will be inscribed. They may give something to the poorhouse in their mother’s name, but then publish it in the newspaper so that everyone will see what they gave for her. Their mother may have been in the nursing home for five years without their knowing how to give, but now they want it printed in the newspaper for her to receive and read. That,” he said, “is the world. Although such a person performs good works, in the end he will find nothing.” As for the third man,

the egotist is the one who wants to enter the temple of God, not with humility, but as though he deserves to enter—not because he needs God, but as though God needs him. And instead of turning aside the obstacle that prevented him from entering, he held it in his own way, making it impossible for him to go in.

It is true that such things happen. And do you know what happens then? God is blamed. We do not turn the accusation upon ourselves so that we may correct ourselves; instead, we blame God, the Church, the preacher, and the Gospel. Today, my beloved, apart from an infinitesimally...

small minority, everyone else does not want Christ. Even those who call themselves Christians do not want Christ. Someone may say, “That is strange.” It is not strange at all. As I told you yesterday, Christ, together with His Most Holy Theotokos and His Saints, has become a decorative figure in people’s lives. For Christ said, “Do you love Me?” “Of course, my Christ.” “He who loves Me keeps My commandments.” If you do not keep My law, how can you love Me? “He who loves Me keeps My commandments.” If you do not love My commandments, how can you love Me? If you love Me, you love My Church. Then why do you accuse My priests? By what right? How long am I to endure this? Who is this man? Where have I been leading him? Now someone may ask, “But how can we bring it about in practice...”

What do our theories and our lies amount to? In practice, we do not love Christ, because He rebukes our lawless way of life; He exposes the life we live contrary to His law. The Gospel, Christ, the Church, and the Saints remind us of our wrongdoing, and that is where we do not want Christ. If a prostitute does not want the Virgin, she rejects her because the Virgin’s life rebukes her own. If it were possible, she would want the Virgin to become a prostitute too, so that she herself would no longer feel condemned. You know the fable about the fox whose tail was cut off by a trap. She was distressed, so she went around spreading the word that having no tail was fashionable and that all the other foxes should cut theirs off as well.

How else could she hide her own disfigurement? This is truly how things are. I knew a woman who has since died, but she died in metanoia, in repentance. She had lived very freely, with loose morals, and she told me of the hatred she felt whenever she learned that a young woman or a young man was a virgin. “You cannot imagine how much harm I have done,” she said. But when she repented, made her confession, and the scales fell from her eyes, as they fell from the eyes of the Apostle Paul, she said, “Then I saw the destruction I had caused, and to this day I have shed rivers of tears. What do you think, Mr. Panagopoulos? Will Christ forgive me?”

I told her, “It is good that you recognize you have sinned. Christ is certainly so good that when a person repents, He forgives everything.” One thing is one thing, and another is another. That is the point. Christ is not harsh. His Gospel is not to blame. His Church is not to blame. His priests are not to blame. His preachers are not to blame. Our own lawless life is to blame. That is the truth. There is another example, which I may have mentioned here before. It concerns a courtesan of Corinth named Lais. Today women take pride in wearing clothes bearing the name of Lais and eating sweets named after Lais. We have turned the name of a corrupt woman into a brand.

She was a celebrated courtesan in ancient Corinth, at the height of her shameful fame. In her day, it is said, a certain kind of looking glass—a mirror—was invented. A small mirror cost an enormous amount of money then. She had money, however she had earned it, and she paid an astronomical sum to acquire the first mirror put on sale. That day her maidservants and the other women envied her, because she had both the money and the desire and, by her own means, could obtain something they all wanted. Strangely, however, the next day they saw her seize it and smash it furiously

into a billion pieces. They thought she had gone mad. She had thrown away so much money on something anyone would have wanted to possess. She had destroyed it; surely she was insane. They hovered around her, trying to discover the reason for her madness. Why had she done such a thing? One woman approached her discreetly and came close enough to discover why she had smashed the mirror. She broke it, not because she had gone mad, but because the mirror had dared to show her that wrinkles were beginning to appear on her face. She could not bear that. This is what we do today.

We are like modern-day Laises. “Do not tell me! Do not tell me!” What should I say to the mirror? How else can one put it?

The mirror dared to tell her that wrinkles were beginning to furrow her face, so she smashed it in fury. That is why we do not want Christ: because He dares to tell a mother that she should accept however many children He gives her—one, two, three, five, ten; I do not know how many, perhaps none. Because He dares to say that husband and wife must practice abstinence on Wednesday and Friday. He dares to say that you must deal honorably and honestly with your customers. He dares to say that you must enter Holy Matrimony as a virgin—both you, young woman, and you, young man—so that you may receive the wedding crowns and hear the words, “Crown them with glory and honor.” But we are not even willing to hear such things. So we tear Christ apart,

we insult Christ, cast Christ aside, put Him to death, bury Him, and think we can then be at peace. But we will not be at peace. It is impossible. So is someone else to blame? Is Christ to blame? Is God to blame for the condition of man? Yet man himself does not want God. He does not want God, because I want you to understand that a person knows God in proportion to his thirst for God. Water flows through a field: if the field is thirsty, it receives the water and draws it in. If it is not thirsty, the water falls upon it and flows away. So it is with the Christian. Man does not want God; it is not God who does not want man. God does want man. He creates the necessary circumstances and conditions and helps him to return, but man does not want God. This evening you heard a prokeimenon at Vespers. I was supposed to be here when it was chanted: “Your mercy, O Lord, shall pursue me”

“all the days of my life.” It was chanted three times. When you hear a troparion repeated, understand that it carries great weight and that you must pay attention to it. It is not repeated merely to fill time, nor because anyone takes sadistic pleasure in tiring people. No. It is something weighty, and you must attend to it. What do these words mean: “Your mercy, O Lord, shall pursue me all my days”? It is a petition offered by the Holy Spirit through David. These words are taken from David and placed upon the lips of every human being. They mean: “My Christ, my God, run after me throughout my whole life. Run after me and catch me. I will not behave like a sheep; I will behave like a goat, always running away from You. Yet although I act foolishly, You must run after me and catch me.”

God has countless ways of catching a person. There is a particular way for each person to be taken alive, to be caught. He caught Paul in one way, the Publican in another, the sinful woman in another, and the Samaritan woman in yet another. And if we are Christians, we will not all be caught by the same net, the same hook, or the same bait. For one Christian, the bait by which he was caught may have been the death of his wife or his child. It may have been a terrible illness, a temptation, or something else—I do not know what. Christ has particular ways suited to each person and to the hardness of each heart. Dogfish are caught one way, red porgies another, sea bream another, and small fish in still another way.

I do not know what other fish there may be. The fisherman knows what bait, hook, or net he must use for each one. So too, in His spiritual sea, Christ hooks and catches people in many different ways. Thus, when it says, “Your mercy shall pursue me all my days,” it means that man runs away and begs God to find some way—whatever it may be—even, as it were, by force, to catch him so that he may be saved. Man, then, is the lost sheep. We say this at our funerals, yet we never believed it during our lives.

It dries upon our lips. The cry of the lost sheep does not come from us: “I am the one who is lost.” It is I. It is you. What have you done? You remained lost to the end; you are heading toward perdition. How am I to find you?

A lamb leaves the fold and wanders away from the shepherd. Is it easy to find? It is both easy and difficult. When is it easy? When the lamb wants to be found. And when is it difficult? When it does not. Today we must ask about the person who is far from Christ, far from the fold, far from the Church, far from the Father, far from the Brother, far from the Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos: does he want to return to the fold? Not only does he not want to return, but he even scorns it. Not only does he not want to return, but he even scorns it. Why? Because if he decides to return, he will be put in a very tight spot, as the saying goes. He will be called to account!

He will be called to replace and restore what he has dishonored, to return what he has stolen and what he has unjustly taken. He will be called to humble himself and ask forgiveness from the person he harmed and wronged. He will be called to say, “I have sinned against heaven and before you.” But his pride spurs the horse on—“Faster!”—and his spear prevents him from turning back. Man does not want to return. How could he? It is entirely possible for him not to want to. If the lamb does not want to return, once it has gone out, it wanders off, grazes, and lies down. The shepherd calls, but the lamb does nothing. But if the lamb does want to return, then where it is, it grieves because it has lost the fold, its mother, its shepherd, and everything else.

It realizes that the wolf may devour it out there, and it begins to bleat. And when it bleats, what is it seeking? It is seeking the way back. Then it is easy for the shepherd to find it. But when a person does not want to return, he does not cry out: “Turn me back, and I shall return; have mercy on me, for I have wandered far away.” I became entangled on the path of sin. I made a complete tangle of it. I remember when I was little, my mother would have us wind thread onto bobbins for the loom she had in the village. Sometimes I tangled the threads until they became a hopeless knot. “How will I ever straighten this out?” If I tried to untangle them myself, I only made the tangle worse, so I called my mother. She would come and patiently sort everything out, and we would put the threads into the loom. This is what man does. Man is always tangling up his life. Every day he becomes more entangled. Man does nothing rightly.

The one who claims that he has done something rightly is full of pride. And even if we do something rightly, it is still not our own doing. As our Church says so beautifully: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” We must attribute it to Christ. If I did anything good today, it is Yours, my God. And whatever evil I did is mine, my God. Then there is humility, and God helps that person. He waits for him and creates the circumstances he needs. He grants him to hear, to see, even to dream, because a single dream can be enough to shake us, remind us of matters left unresolved, and move us to put them in order. For man falls asleep spiritually; he becomes as though dead, and his understanding is numbed.

They give a man something before an operation, and it is as though nothing is happening; he is in another world. Yet man ought to live each day with fear and trembling, because Christ will come at an unexpected hour and take us by surprise. And woe to us if our affairs are not in order, even though He has waited for us for so long. Something I heard made a deep impression on me. You may hear it without reflecting deeply on what it means. What is the Church saying about us, and why does she summon these words and place them in Vespers? Along with this, the priest said other things in a secret prayer. Among his petitions for us all, he prayed: “Receive us in repentance and confession.” My Christ, if we die tonight, we beg You to find us repentant and confessed. Which one of us is ready to die tonight?

He cannot die. He cannot die. He can die, yes—but he does not know how to live. And yet, I repeat, we will place the blame for all these things on God. God is not at fault. He is waiting. Following the course of my thoughts, another story comes to mind, and I will tell it to you. Two men were walking together, a priest and a barber. They found themselves in a certain neighborhood. It was not a pleasant neighborhood. There were troubled people there, people whose appearance frightened and alarmed you. The priest and the barber were traveling together, but the barber, as so often happens today...

Immediately began condemning the priest and said to him: “Is this the God you preach—the God who tolerates such wretchedness and allows people to live in such misery? How loving can He be, as you claim? Is this possible? I could never believe in such a God. How can He tolerate this wretchedness? Do you see it, Father?” The priest realized that, in this case, he had found the right customer. He did not answer immediately, but they continued farther down the road. Then a man approached them, like some we still meet today. He had a long beard and long hair; his eyes could hardly be seen. He was unwashed and filthy in the fullest sense of the word—a wild-looking man...

Who had lost all semblance of human dignity. Taking his cue from this, the priest said to the barber, “It seems to me that you are not doing your job properly.” “Why?” the barber asked. “How can you tolerate that man going unshaven and living in such a state?” “Are you blaming me?” the barber said. “Yes,” the priest replied, “I am blaming you.”

“That man never came to me, so I could not groom him.” The priest answered: “Yet just now you blamed God for allowing all this wretchedness, as though God were at fault. So I thought that you too must be at fault here. But you tell me that this man never came to you. Well, neither did those people go to God. Do you see? God, like you, is not to blame for the wretched state of those people.” The barber fell silent and went away. We are quick to pour out our poison. We are quick to fashion a religion according to our own measure, a religion shaped by our ego. We want a Gospel that serves our purposes—a Gospel that does not expose us, rebuke us, or unsettle us; a Gospel tailored to our own measure, as I said earlier. But that is not the Gospel of Christ. And these things, I dare say, are nothing compared with all that could be said about the condition in which we find ourselves. That condition is precisely why we are speaking: perhaps one of us may come to himself. The conclusion, however, is this.

This is our third talk in succession given in this same spirit and according to this same plan. And the sole cause of all this misery of humanity is...

Sin. When each person’s sin is healed, its consequences will begin to be put right. A house may contain five, six, ten, fifteen, or twenty lights and chandeliers. But if not one is burning, the darkness is dense. If they are all burning, it is beautiful. If fourteen are burning, or thirteen, twelve, eleven, or ten, that is good; but even if only one light is burning somewhere in the house, its glow may reach the kitchen, the sitting room, and the surrounding space, allowing someone to see. But when no light is burning at all, there is dense darkness, and people stumble into one another.

Satan takes care that no one in the house becomes a light. Yet perhaps the grandmother who still remains, or the grandfather, the father, a young girl, or a young man—I do not know who—might be a light within the home. Our concern should be that everyone may receive from the Light. The Light came into the world: Christ came into the world. But the world hated the Light and loved darkness rather than the Light, and it does not want to come into the Light, lest its evil deeds be exposed. Everything is done secretly, among ourselves, so that no one will learn of it: “Get the rope, the water, and the salt; turn out the light; take her away; kill her,” and so forth.

Such deeds cannot bear to be brought into the open, because they are deceitful and dishonorable. They are contrary to morality and often even to human law—to divine law all the more. It would be good if every family consisted of human lights, but families do not consist entirely of lights. Yet I say that if even a few people attain this, what will happen? Light will begin to shine in the world. These physical lights are good, but spiritual lights are far better. A person himself should become light, so that he may illumine others rather than darken them. How can this happen? It depends upon the person; it does not depend upon Christ. If a person does not want Christ’s help, Christ cannot help him. But if he is willing, Christ can not only save him but even sanctify him. He can sanctify him as well.

I have a great example to give you. Consider the sinful Samaritan woman, Saint Photini. She was a woman who had lived with six men by the time she met our Christ at Jacob’s well. A single encounter was enough to save her, because her heart was well disposed. And not only was she saved, but her whole family was saved as well, including her five sisters. Her two children, born outside of wedlock, were also saved and sanctified, as were some of the guards who witnessed her martyrdom together with her entire family. Someone may ask, “Did Christ go down into such mire?” For she truly was a woman...

Before whom it would have been difficult to find a greater sinner. And yet there is sin, and there is sin. There is sin from which a person can readily be saved, and there is sin from which salvation is difficult. Woe to the person who sins, boasts about his sin, and passes the recipe on to others. Many sinful ways were taught to you by other people, by those who considered themselves clever and worldly-wise. We did not know these things; we learned them because others taught us, boasted of what they had accomplished, and passed it on to us. There are others who sin, but their conscience strikes them. They fall into sin, but they want to stop sinning. And there are those who not only refuse to stop, but cooperate in sin and spread it to others.

The first have left an opening, and Christ, as I told you earlier, makes a special appointment with each person and meets him at his own level. He met Paul high on the road; He met this woman down at Jacob’s well; He met others elsewhere; and He met the thief beside the Cross. He took hold of each one wherever He could. I say this because, if those of us listening now belong to one category or another and bear a certain quantity or even quality of sins, we should not lose heart. These matters can be put right. Metanoia—repentance—is a great thing, but it must be true repentance, repentance as Christ desires it. Repentance and confession—not repentance in which I merely speak to the icons, and not repentance in which I simply speak to Christ.

Repentance means that you will go to the priest, to the confessor, to your spiritual father—to the one who has the power and authority to remit your sins. Otherwise, your sins are not remitted. Saint Mary of Egypt, whom those of you present last night heard about, found the door of the All-Holy Church of the Resurrection closed to her. She wanted to enter and venerate the Cross of our Christ, but she could not, because even on the boat bringing her there she had her lovers with her. We do this too. We go to a feast day with our lover to light an oil lamp or a candle—with our lover, carrying our sin along with us. She did not enter; and when at last she tried to enter, she could not. Inside there was an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and she said to her:

“Pray to your Son to let me enter”—for she understood that her sin was preventing her—“and I will abandon my sin.” And indeed she was set free. She went to Golgotha, venerated the Cross, and departed into the desert, where she lived alone for forty-six years, sustained from the beginning by two loaves of bread. Was she saved? No. If, after those forty-six years, our Christ had not sent Saint Zosimas to meet her in the Jordan desert, hear her confession, and return the following year to give her Holy Communion before her death, she would not have been saved, even though she had lived for forty-six years far from sin. She had become almost bodiless and had lived on two loaves of bread. Yet she was not ready for Paradise; she needed confession and Holy Communion. I shall explain this with a brief example.

Let no one be deceived into saying, “I shall pay for my sin myself; I shall do something to make up for it.” The devil laughs at such things. You must confess your sin down to the last detail. Let me return, then, to Saint Photini, the Samaritan woman. Her metanoia—her repentance—cleansed her from her sin. It gave her such power and grace that she became a light to the rest of her family. There were six sisters in all. Read the account of the martyrdom of Saint Photini’s family, commemorated on February 26, and see for yourselves. Saint Kyriaki, the sister of Saint Photini, met her end by the sword. Saint Photo, the sister of Saint Photini, met her end by the sword. Another sister of Saint Photini met her end by the sword. Saint Paraskevi was tied between two trees; when the trees were released, they tore her body in two, and she gave up her spirit.

And so on, and so on. She had had six men, yet she gave the Church six sisters who became saints, as well as her two children born outside wedlock; even the commander of the guard became a believer. Such was her metanoia, such was her faith. Does anyone’s influence carry weight in his own household? Usually it does not. Christ said, “No one becomes a saint in his own country.” Since they knew that she had lived such a dissolute life, how could anyone ever believe her? They would have said, “Oh, no—I want nothing to do with this.” But her metanoia was so profound—such is the change it works in a person—that they could not resist. They were won over, believed her, and the whole family went even as far as martyrdom. And as a testimony to the power of metanoia, Christ has left something from this woman at the skete, though perhaps you have visited the Holy Mountain without noticing it.

So I remind you to look for it when you go. Visit the Monastery of Iviron, where our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), the Portaitissa, is kept. Among the three hundred and twenty relics there is the left foot of Saint Photini the Samaritan Woman. That once-sinful foot remains completely intact, with the skin, the nails, and everything else, as a sign of the power of metanoia. That sinful foot—the foot of the woman who had lived with six men, whom we would have spoken about so harshly! This, I tell you, is metanoia. I am telling you this to help and console you, in case Satan has gained a hold over you. Metanoia sets everything right, provided it is undertaken as Christ desires. It is good for a person to repent, but if he does not confess, it amounts to nothing; as the saying goes, he has made a hole in the water.

The Mystery is not repentance alone, nor is it confession alone. Neither is it the kind of confession we make on Great Wednesday so that we can receive Holy Communion on Thursday, only to do the same things again on Friday. That is confession without repentance. Nor is it the kind of repentance the Protestants speak of: “You have repented, so everything is fine.” No. The Mystery is repentance and confession together. Repentance is the decision expressed by the prodigal son: “I will arise and go to my father.” Confession is the formal declaration of that decision. As you know, no decision takes effect until it has been formally communicated. Many times, decisions have been issued in our favor, yet we have been unable to collect a single penny from the treasury.

We went there, and they told us, “No decision has been formally communicated to us concerning you.” “But it was issued! We heard it on television, and the newspapers published it.” A few days pass, and we return: “Has it been formally communicated yet?” Only then can we receive what is due to us. So it is not simply repentance; it is repentance and confession. Unfortunately, few of us belong to that category. We have people who have repented but have never confessed. We have people who have confessed but have never repented. Only a few have both repented and confessed. I do not know which category you belong to. Examine yourselves. If you confess merely so that you can receive Holy Communion and then return to the same sins, you have not repented. And if you have repented but have not confessed, all those sins remain upon you. No sin simply departs, dissolves, disappears, or rusts away unless you have confessed it. It is confession that Satan fears—confession.

Satan always rages to prevent a person from reaching confession. The first thing he does is turn him against the clergy. This latest campaign against the clergy is no accident. Today the abysses have opened, all the demons have come out and entered into people, and they are waging this war against the clergy. “Why should you go to a sinful priest?” What concern is that of yours? Have you ever heard them publicly disgrace a clergyman of another confession? Have you heard the newspapers discussing the misconduct of the papal or Protestant clergy?

No—only the work is attacked. Why? Because only the Orthodox priest has the authority to bind and to loose. He is the bridge—fix that firmly in your nous, your spiritual intellect. Do you want to be delivered from your sins? Use this bridge, which leads from earth to Heaven. Christ tells us, as John records: “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” For a person to reach the Father, who possesses the Kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world, he must pass through Christ; and no one comes to Christ, so as to go to the Father, except through the clergy. Whoever rejects the clergy also rejects Christ and God. I hear many people, deceived through ignorance, saying, “I believe in God, and I believe in Christ, but I do not believe in priests.” That is a contradiction.

What did Christ say about this? He stood before the priests and said, “He who rejects you rejects Me.” Whoever refuses to accept you refuses to accept Me. “And he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” The person who speaks against the clergy is against Christ and against God. Let me ask you one thing. Did Christ—our Christ—choose twelve Apostles or not? And among those twelve, were there not three with serious faults? Men whom He Himself chose had faults. One betrayed Him, another denied Him, and another murmured against Him.

Then will those whom we appoint have no faults?

The Church remained the Church. Did Judas work miracles or not? Judas worked miracles. Does the Gospel say anywhere that Judas did not work miracles because he was wicked and a thief? It says no such thing. Did Peter, who denied Christ, work miracles or not? And Thomas, who murmured against Him and would not accept Him until Christ gave him proof—did he not work miracles? But we do not pay attention to these things. And consider this as well: take whichever priest the newspapers portray as the greatest sinner and have him read the blessing of water over you. Let us see what happens.

Will that water spoil, or will it not?

It will not spoil. It will not spoil. It will not spoil. Ask a papal priest to do the same. Ask a Protestant. Ask a Jehovah’s Witness to do it. No—none of them can do this. No one. Absolutely no one. For us, this is not only a matter of disposition; it is also a matter of knowledge. In our case, knowledge is the issue. We shall suffer in Tartarus because we have received so much mercy. The world knows that the light of the Resurrection comes forth only for the Orthodox. You know that Orthodox, Catholics, and Syrians are all present together inside the Church of the Resurrection.

Do they not enter? They do; they come as well. You know this! And you know that on Great Saturday they all come, make a prostration before our Patriarch, and at noon receive the Light, each lighting his candle from it. You know this! The Lord has been saying, as it were, “For two thousand years I have given the Light to this man. I enter and give it to him; therefore I am showing whom I have chosen.” Once they shut our Patriarch out because the Armenians bribed the Turks to exclude him. Last night I showed you the column that split open: the Light came through it and was given outside. Then the Turkish emir cried out from above, “This is the true Allah!” He fell directly in front of the door, at the very place where Saint Mary of Egypt had once stood. His blood was shed there; they slaughtered him there. And his relics remain whole.

They are yellow in color. If you ever go down there, visit the Great Panagia, the Holy Monastery of the Great Panagia opposite the church. I have photographed them, and I will show them to you—the relics of that emir. Yet people still speak and complain: “Is this really God?” Go to Saint Gerasimos, where the demon-possessed are brought, or to Saint Nektarios, where the demon-possessed are also brought. What do the demons say when they see an Orthodox priest? They are terrified of him, though of course I too am afraid when I witness it. They say nothing at all to a Catholic priest.

How, then, can I say, “There is nothing to it”? And how can I condemn the very instrument God will use to sanctify me? Everyone listens to those friends of theirs—the satans—speaking through their appointed instrument today, especially the newspapers. They show you some scandal and say, “There you are; it is all dust and ashes. There is nothing left.” How can there be nothing? May the priest indeed be a saint. But what if he is not a saint—what then? If you insist on finding a saint, you are not seeking Christ. You are placing your faith not in Christ but in a man, venerating that individual instead of Christ. I do not approach the priest because of his personal worthiness. I want even the hand of an unworthy priest to bless me, because in the person of the priest or hierarch, Christ Himself is present.

A police officer may be a thief, yet if he comes to address me wearing the full insignia of his office, can I tell him, “Move along”? In the past he would say, “In the name of the king”; now he acts in the name of the Republic, the state, and the law. So long as he wears the official band here, whoever he may be inwardly, he possesses authority by virtue of his office. You will obey him; he can remove you, arrest you, and so forth, because he acts on behalf of an authority. In relation to that authority, no one examines what kind of individual he is personally. It is the authority that matters, the authority by which the order is carried out. How much more so when Christ Himself appointed the priest! Who are you to reject him? Go to Church for the feast of the Cross the day after tomorrow. Where is the basil? Some Jehovah’s Witnesses and others tell us, “The basil has natural properties,” and so on. Very well, then—take some.

Take a bowl with a little flour in it and place that basil inside. It will become leaven, it will rise, and you will make a prosphoron to offer here in the Church. It was not the basil itself that revived the grocer’s flour and placed yeast and life within it. This is the Kingdom of Heaven at work. Then prepare another bowl using basil that has not been blessed by the sinful priest, and you will see that it can do nothing. The matter lies in our own hands. We cannot excuse ourselves by saying that the priest is sinful. He may indeed be sinful. Though he may not be holy in his personal conduct, as an instrument he is holy—most holy. If we belonged to another church, especially the papal church, then perhaps we would need to seek some personally holy priest who carries grace in his trouser legs or in his pocket, and who says, “I forgive you; I hear your confession; I baptize you; I crown you in Holy Matrimony.”

Is there any such thing among the Orthodox? No. An Orthodox priest does not speak that way. He says, “What have You commanded, Lord? Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed. Therefore, loose also the sins of Your servant.” What have You said, Lord? It is not I who do it. I have no power of my own. I am only a wire. I wish I were galvanized, but I am rusty; nevertheless, the current still passes through me. The Ascension of the Theotokos (God-bearer), the Second Coming, Diadochos of Photike, the Annunciation, Hesychios the Priest, the Annunciation—did anyone ask you about these things? Your task is to attend to your own life, which is in disorder. If such a priest...

If you learned that this corrupt priest was distributing gold sovereigns, would you go to receive one or not? You would go, you cunning fellow, and you would even get up early in case he ran out. Yes, you would go early. Yet he is not merely distributing gold sovereigns; he is distributing tickets to the Kingdom of Heaven. Do you know what God says? Perhaps, however...

Though they dwell upon the earth and walk among us here, they have been entrusted with the administration of things in Heaven. They have received this authority. God did not merely tell them that what was bound on earth would be bound, and what was loosed would be loosed, as though these were empty words.

It is an authority that God has given neither to principalities nor even to archangels. An angel cannot forgive you; a saint cannot forgive you; the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) cannot forgive you; Christ will not forgive you apart from the way He appointed—the priest of Christ forgives you. Go back to him again. You may say, “But I wanted to kneel here and cry, ‘My Christ, save me!’” It amounts to nothing; you must go to your priest. There is a passage connected with the Old Testament that opens up a whole subject, which we may discuss in our next talk. You will hear some remarkable things, because in the Old Testament leprosy is the type, the symbolic image, of sin, while physicians were responsible for the other diseases of the human body. Physicians had their proper place, as we read in the Wisdom of Sirach, chapter 38: “Give place to the physician, for you have need of him.”

“The Lord created medicines from the earth; the Lord created physicians, for they too are needed.” The physicians had authority to give their judgment concerning all illnesses, but in cases of leprosy, the clergy gave the judgment. In cases of leprosy, the clergy gave the judgment. That is why, when Christ healed the lepers, He said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” “But are You not the One who established the priests? Why should we go to them?” “Yes, I am, and they belong to Me; but you must go to them.” It is very simple. Suppose a check arrives from a loved one abroad. I take it to the bank and say, “I would like to cash this, please.” What will the answer be? “Go to the clerk over there, and then to the cashier.”

“I will not go to the clerk. Are you not the banker? Are you not a shareholder?” “Yes, I am, but you must go there.” If I insist that he cash it and settle the matter himself, will he do it? I must go where he directs me. “Yes, I am in charge, and that clerk works for me; but that is where you must go.” That is how these things work. Even Christ Himself does not forgive us today apart from the clergy, because He does not contradict His own words. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” He says, and you will carry out this ministry. Christ cannot now take back and revoke what He Himself proclaimed and taught. “Most Holy Theotokos, forgive me.” Really? Is that what we say to the Most Holy Theotokos? We say, “Most Holy Theotokos, intercede for us.” She does not forgive and she does not save. “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.”

Did not the Most Holy Theotokos herself say in the hill country, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior”? God was her Savior too. Did our Most Holy Theotokos not bear ancestral sin? She may have had no deliberate sins, but she did bear ancestral sin. He is her Savior as well. And do we not then turn and say, “Save us, O Son of God”? We say it three times. We do not say it once; we say it three times: “Save us.” This, then, is what it means: our Most Holy Theotokos intercedes for us. So why say, “Most Holy Theotokos, forgive me”? Am I unwilling to go to the priest of her Son—to the priest of my Christ, my God, and her God—so that I may be forgiven? These are divinely established ordinances and laws. Suppose someone dies under excommunication. When they exhume him three years later, Christ is invoked, and a bishop is called.

The bishop will read the appointed prayer over him so that his body may dissolve. Offer a million prayers to heaven if you wish; sins are loosed here on earth, not from heaven. Do we understand? That is how these matters stand. Therefore, as long as sin remains, we must learn the appointed way by which, after metanoia—repentance—that sin is removed. Then things will, in a certain sense, be put back in their proper place. Let us stop here for tonight and, God willing, continue tomorrow evening.

Σαν σύγχρονες Λαΐδες εμείς! «Μη μου το λες, μη μου το λες!» Στον καθρέφτη, να μην το πω; Πώς το λες;

κάτι για να τον χειρουργήσουν, σαν να μη συμβαίνει τίποτα, σε έναν άλλο κόσμο. Πως ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να είναι με φόβο και τρόμο καθημερινώς, διότι ο Χριστός είναι εκείνος ο οποίος θα έρθει σε έναν ανύποπτο χρόνο και θα μας αιφνιδιάσει. Και αλλοίμονο, εάν η κατάστασή μας δεν είναι τακτοποιημένη, παρότι Αυτός μας περίμενε τόσο καιρό. Μου έκανε, λέγω, αίσθηση αυτό το πράγμα που άκουσα. Εσείς μπορεί να το ακούσετε, αλλά να μην εμβαθύνετε τι θέλει να πει με αυτά τα πράγματα. Τι λέγει για μας η Εκκλησία και γιατί το επιστρατεύει και το βάζει στον Εσπερινό; Μαζί με αυτό είπε κι άλλα ο ιερεύς μέσα σε μια μυστική ευχή. Ευχήθηκε για μας όλους, από όσα είπε: «Εν μετανοία και εξομολογήσει παράλαβε». Αν, Χριστέ μου, απόψε πεθάνουμε, σε παρακαλούμε να είμαστε μετανοημένοι και εξομολογημένοι. Ποιος από εμάς είναι έτοιμος να πεθάνει απόψε;

Πάντα λυσσά ο σατανάς να μην φτάσει ο άνθρωπος στην εξομολόγηση. Το πρώτο που του κάνει, του κατηγορεί τον κλήρο. Αυτός ο πόλεμος ο τελευταίος που γίνεται κατά του κλήρου δεν είναι τυχαίο γεγονός. Σήμερα έχουν ανοίξει οι άβυσσοι, έχουν βγει όλα τα δαιμόνια από μέσα και έχουν μπει μέσα στους ανθρώπους και κάνουν τον πόλεμο αυτό εναντίον του κλήρου. Τι έχεις να πας εσύ σε έναν αμαρτωλό παπά; Τι σε ενδιαφέρει; Ακούσατε να διασύρουνε κανέναν ιερέα ξένου δόγματος; Ακούσατε να γίνει συζήτηση στις εφημερίδες για τις ατασθαλίες του παπικού κλήρου, του προτεσταντικού;

Αυτούς που φτιάχνουμε εμείς, δεν θα έχουνε;

Θα χαλάσει το νερό εκείνο ή δεν θα χαλάσει;
