Summary
Material and scientific progress cannot overcome humanity’s spiritual decline, fear, anxiety, and broken relationships. Confession without abandoning repeated sins produces no spiritual change, whereas worthy participation in Christ transforms the whole person. Christ’s Incarnation, Passion, Resurrection, the Church, and her sacraments are directed toward repentance, forgiveness of sins, and eternal life.

We were together yesterday. You will remember that we had the opportunity to say a few words about how we have gone astray.
From the whole talk, I hope it became clear that we truly are not doing well. The sad thing is that, although nearly all of us admit this, and although the world imagines that it is advancing through technology, inventions, and science, deep down there is fear.
We fear that something is going to happen, that something evil awaits us, because despite all our other progress, spiritually and inwardly we have fallen a very long way—as individuals, as families, and as a society. I think this fear within us should lead us toward metanoia, toward repentance, and salvation. For a person’s salvation is not simply in God’s hands. Although it depends upon God, it is not in God’s hands alone; it is also in the hands of man. I do not know whether you noticed some patristic words I quoted yesterday on this matter. A Father of the Church says: “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” In other words, He who made you without asking you cannot save you without asking you. Our sins, our stubborn self-will, and our egotism have bound Christ’s hands. What Pilate said when Christ was presented with His hands bound and a reed in His hand remains true today: “Behold the Man.” It depends on us whether we wish to be saved, whether we wish...
our spiritual life to change. For despite all our material goods, psychiatric hospitals are increasing, neurological clinics are multiplying, and psychiatrists have now become almost indispensable in our homes. Despite all the goods and comforts we possess, despite the twenty-four-hour day—which we are nearly turning into a four-hour working day so that we can spend the remaining hours amusing ourselves and sinning—we are still miserable. We have anxiety within us. We have anguish within us. There is no peace in the home. There is no love in the neighborhood. Everything seems to be turned upside down.
Why? Because Christ is missing from our midst, and He alone is able to bring peace and stillness to all things and fill man with happiness both in this passing life and in eternity. It is Christ alone; there is no one else. Do whatever you wish. Make, acquire, and save as much money as you can. You will never have peace of soul, because peace is not found in the world. Peace is not represented by the world’s doves or olive branches. It is not represented by the various monuments to peace that we construct. Those things are false. Peace is Christ. Christ is our peace. When a person has no peace with God, he has no peace with his fellow man; and when he has no peace with his fellow man, neither does he have peace with God. Do you think the Church is mistaken when, as the Holy Doors open, the deacon raises the orarion
and says, “In peace let us pray to the Lord”? And in his second petition: “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” There is no peace in the world, whatever the world may say. Let the world make its claims and concern itself with establishing peace; it will never be able to establish peace, because the Peacemaker is absent from its midst. That is the reason: the Peacemaker is absent. How can there be peace, when He is peace? “My peace I give to you.” “Peace be with you.” “Peace be to all.” Peace springs forth from here; it goes out through the Holy Doors. Christ, in the person of the priest or bishop, is the One who bestows peace. And if there are vessels capable of receiving that peace, it will remain in them.
If there is purity able to receive peace, peace will remain. If there is no purity and no receptiveness, peace does not remain. Even if you know nothing else, I imagine you know the account of the Ark and the Flood, whether from children’s stories or from primary school. When Noah wanted to see whether the waters had begun to recede from the earth and whether the Flood had ceased, Scripture says that he opened the window and released a raven to fly out. As was natural, the raven did not return. Why? Because on the surface of the waters
there were animals everywhere, of every kind. The raven was feasting as though it were Pascha. Why would it dream of returning inside when it had found so much food outside? Noah waited, but the raven did not return. So the attempt failed, and Noah could not discover whether the waters had begun to recede or whether any dry ground had appeared. He then decided to release the dove. Once again he opened the window and released a dove, the complete opposite of the raven. The raven is an unclean bird, whereas the dove is clean and, as you know, is even a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The dove went out, Scripture says, and began to fly and fly.
There was filth and stench upon the surface of the waters. Having nowhere to rest her feet, and being a clean bird, she would not settle in the filth. She returned to the Ark, and Noah the Patriarch put out his hand and brought the dove back inside. This is what happens when the priest comes out here and says, “Peace be to all,” or “Peace be with you.” This grace of the Holy Spirit flies like a dove, seeking some clean place on which to rest her feet. But here she finds complaining; there, blasphemy; elsewhere, the killing of children or the refusal to bear children; and somewhere else, theft.
She finds deceit, fornication, adultery, and so forth. Where can this grace come to rest? Finding no place, she turns back and withdraws within again. And we leave exactly as we entered. Do you see any change in yourselves from attending Church? You do not. Why not? Because grace—the peace that surpasses every nous, every spiritual intellect—does not abide within you. That is the reason.
Let me give you another example. The next time you go to Holy Confession—for most of you confess, apart from a few—take a tape recorder, place it beside you, and record your confession. Then, when you go again after ten days, twenty days, a month, two months, or whenever it may be, record your second confession as well. And when you return again, record the third.
Then play them back and listen. You will see that they do not differ at all.
You committed again what you confessed. Then you committed again what you confessed. And once more, you committed again what you confessed. Consequently, there has been no change whatsoever. We simply went to confession so that we could receive Holy Communion, and here we are again. “Christ, what concern is it of Yours? We have no intention of changing our lives. We will continue in our same old ways.” Examine this, put it to the test, and you will see whether I am far from the truth. Christ, then, is absent from man. This is why I told you yesterday that the type of Christ in the Old Testament had to be eaten whole by the Hebrews—with the head, the entrails, the legs, the body, everything. For this typological figure points to Christ Himself, who, when received in Holy Communion by a person who has prepared properly, transforms that person’s very nature.
The person then has the nous of Christ, a heart full of compassion, hands ready to do good, and feet that walk toward blessedness. He cannot do evil, because, as Paul says, “Christ lives in me”: the body is dead to sin, and the spirit lives for works of righteousness. Thus, although we acknowledge that we are not doing well, and although by worldly standards—in material things, imagination, and science—we are doing extremely well, so much so that a person may be overwhelmed by what is being achieved today, even those who achieve these things have no peace within them. Peace, I repeat, is grace. It is the Kingdom of Heaven, a foretaste of the Kingdom of Heaven. A person who experiences this peace can be beside himself with wonder. Scripture says it is “the peace that surpasses every nous, every spiritual intellect.” It is something that man cannot comprehend.
Look at the Saints who bear this crown. Their heads are guarded by the grace of God. These are not merely wreaths of laurel and the like, as we might say. It is the peace of God, which surpasses every nous, every spiritual intellect, guarding man’s nous so that Satan cannot take hold of it, so that the devil cannot bring it under his control and use it to work evil against his fellow man and against himself. These things must be said by way of introduction if a person wishes to return. For unless a person recognizes that he is sick, he will not go to the doctor. And even if he does go, he will not afterward take the medicines as he should. He will not pay attention to the treatment, the prescription, or the diet the doctor gives him. But if he understands the seriousness of the illness,
then, if he has any sense, he will follow the treatment with what we might call religious devotion. If a person is insane, he will not follow it. For anyone who has no relationship with Christ is not entirely sound in his thinking. Let him claim to be wise; let others call him wise and applaud him. Such certificates carry no weight anywhere. Whatever certificate you may give me, it will count for nothing, whether for Hell or for Paradise. Surely you do not believe that you have the power to send me to Hell or to send me to Paradise. That would be absurd. Nor do you yourselves believe that you can send yourselves wherever you wish, or that others can send you there. These things are absurd. Yet although this is the reality, and no one has the power to transfer us elsewhere,
no one can send us, determine our destiny, condemn us, or acquit us. And yet we occupy ourselves with the certificates the world issues. “What will the world say? You see, we live in the world; we have connections and acquaintances. What can we do?” We allow the world to influence us. Does its opinion concern you? “Of course it does.” But why should its opinion concern you? Where will that opinion carry any weight? Suppose you died this very moment. Tell me, where would the world’s opinion count then? Can the world that influenced you and whose voice you obeyed follow you there? It may not even come to your funeral. Although you were acquaintances and friends and allowed yourselves to be influenced by one another, his doctor may have told him to avoid emotional strain, so he will send a wreath in some old taxi. And that will be all. That is the world. Even if it comes, it will...
be able to accompany you only as far as the grave. Once the lid is closed and the earth covers you, it cannot follow you. And even if it follows you to the grave, it follows you as a body, as mortal remains, not as a living person. Once your mouth opens and your spirit departs, everything changes. You stand alone, face to face.
The world cannot follow you. No one can hinder you on the road you are taking toward Hell, and no one can help you ascend to Paradise. That is where it all ends. Then the deafness and emptiness—both ours and the world’s—are revealed. If you wish, I will explain this more plainly. Many opinions are formed about every person.
But only one opinion matters and should concern a person. You who may be seeing and hearing me for the first time could, if asked, issue a certificate for me or against me. It would be of no use anywhere. “I give you a certificate, Panagopoulos, and send you to Paradise.” It would carry no weight anywhere. “I give you a certificate, Panagopoulos, and send you to Hell.” It would carry no weight anywhere. Other people who have heard me more often, who are my friends and have traveled with me many times, and so forth, formed an opinion before the one you are forming now, because they know certain other details of my life. Their certificate would therefore be different. But neither would that carry any weight anywhere. My family, who know me from my daily life and conduct at home,
know certain secrets about me that you and the others do not know. If called upon, they too could issue a certificate about me. But that certificate would not be accepted either. And I myself, who have hidden things from my wife, my children, my friends, and you—things known only to me and to God—I too could draw up a certificate. But neither would that certificate be accepted. Four certificates, all useless. What, then, is accepted? Not what you say, not what others say, not what my family says, and not even what I say. What does Jesus, the Crucified Nazarene, say about it? What does He say about me at this very hour? And what does He say about you at this very hour? So put the world in its proper place. Respect it, but do not listen to it when it leads you, urges you,
hinders you from reaching eternity, and leads you into evil. World, stay in your place. I respect you, but I will not listen to you, because what you tell me is not life. You will not give me a certificate, nor do I need one from you. Will you take away my job and my bread? Unless He wills it, you can take nothing from me. He can cut the ground from under your feet, take away your tongue, and take your life this very moment. He can! I believe in Him, and you can do nothing to me. And if He permits me to suffer something, then what? You may dismiss me from my job, deny me a promotion, prevent me from doing this or that. It will be a temptation for me, perhaps because of my sins; I will be paying off some of my debts. For you should know that God is just, that He loves His creature, and that He wants us to settle our accounts here.
Many times He permits strange things, which we, unfortunately, take as injustice. Someone says, “You know, he treated me unjustly.” Did he wrong you, or did he bless you? “But he wronged me! I am not at fault now.” Perhaps you were at fault some other time and are now paying an old debt. There are many things in a person’s life that we shall understand only on that Day, when the whole record is shown to us like a cardiogram and a film. Then we shall understand how great Christ’s love for us was—even through cancer, even through an accident, even through poverty and financial ruin—and how all of it worked for our good. We never curse the doctor when he takes the knife, begins to cut, and removes the diseased flesh.
We may say, “But I am in pain.” And he replies, “Yes, but I will save you.” I kiss his hands and even put fifty thousand in an envelope for him. I frame his photograph and hang it up, because he saved this earthly life of mine, even though he put me through I do not know how many operations. So let Christ give me whatever bitter medicine is necessary, if this filth must be purged from me through cleansing and through pain. For I want you to understand that what is acquired through pleasure is cast out and healed through suffering. I repeat: whatever is acquired and accumulated through pleasure is healed through suffering, through pain—through affliction, fasting, ascesis, and humility. If, then, we were to ask our Christ about
certain circumstances in our lives in which we think we have been wronged, or in which we have wronged others, we would discover some astonishing things. Whatever happens is for our good, whether the world calls it good or calls it evil. There are not many evils in the world. There is only one evil: sin. Sin. Everything else is not evil—not death, cancer, tuberculosis, persecution, or anything else. Only sin is evil. All other things can be healed and can serve a beneficial purpose in a person’s life. I once read about a great spiritual father. I will not tell you his name, because perhaps you would be scandalized. One day he went down to Alexandria. He was a renowned figure! When he passed by, people made way for him.
People in the coffeehouses stood up when this imposing man passed. One day, then, he went down to Alexandria, but he did not arrive in time to enter. The city gates had already been shut, and he was left outside. Nearby was a shepherd who was his friend and acquaintance, so he went to stay with him for the night. In the morning, when God opened the day and the Alexandrians opened the gates, he would enter Alexandria. The shepherd welcomed him joyfully, and he stayed there that night. But during the night thieves came and robbed the shepherd, stealing sheep and goats. Naturally, the police took up the case in the morning, and they arrested
the elder. They thought he had deliberately come to stay there that night and distract the shepherd so that his accomplices could carry out the theft. And so, instead of going into Alexandria the next morning, attending to his business, and returning to his hermitage, the elder found himself in prison. Since he had done no such thing, he was scandalized. He was even more troubled when, in prison, he met two other men. They asked him, “Geronta, what did you do to end up here?” “My children,” he said, “I did nothing. I am here unjustly. You may not believe it, but I truly am here unjustly.” “We believe you, Geronta,” they replied.
“The two of us are also here unjustly. And now, since you seem to be a man of God, we want you to tell us: is God unjust?” The elder was struck speechless. “My children,” he said, “God is not unjust.” “Then how can this be? We no longer believe. We have lost our faith. We are here unjustly. Both of us have been accused of murder, but neither I nor he committed the murder.” You understand the position in which this man now found himself. Eventually the other two lay down and fell asleep, but he could not sleep. He knelt down and laid hold of Heaven. “My Christ, You will tell me the answer—if not for their sake, then for mine. This has shaken me too.
Do You permit such injustice, at least toward these men?” He wept. “I will not rise from here,” he said, “unless You give me an answer.” Then suddenly a tall, handsome, fair-haired man came and tapped him on the shoulder. “Well, Geronta, what are you doing there?” “What am I doing? I am bombarding Heaven.” “Why are you bombarding Heaven?” “Why? What can I tell you? It is because of me, but also because of these two men. All three of us are here unjustly.” “So, in the fifty-five years you have lived in ascesis, have you ever learned that God is unjust?” “But if I did not steal, why am I in prison? And if they did not murder anyone, why are they in prison? For what reason are they here?” “Calm yourself,” he said. “Let me explain. Do you know what debt you are paying here now?”
“When you were eight years old,” he said, “you were playing in a field. But you were not content simply to play. You went and untied a heifer that an elderly woman had tethered. The heifer ran away, and the woman lost it. Her tears have flowed like rivers to this very day. It is for that heifer,” he said, “that you are paying now. The good God has permitted you to be punished a little here, so that you will not find yourself burdened with that debt there.” The elder stood still, remembered such an incident, and said, “Very well, but I gave all my property and every material possession I had to the poor. Do I still owe for the heifer?” “You chose to give those things,” he replied. “That was a gift of your own. But this is a debt.
It is a debt, and you still owe it.” The elder was stunned. “Very well, that explains my case. But what about the man sleeping by the first table?” “He was cutting wood beside a river with another man. The other man slipped down the riverbank and fell into the water. He shouted, ‘Run farther downstream and catch me!’ But this man remained indifferent, as though nothing were happening. The man drowned, and this one was charged with his death.” The elder also wanted to know about the other prisoner. “That man,” he said, “had a dispute with an important man in his village. Since he could neither get his hands on the man to beat him nor bring him to court, he slandered the man’s daughter, accusing her of immorality. Because of that accusation, the young woman remained unmarried.
Divine providence has judged him to be a moral murderer. Morally, he destroyed that member of the village family. God,” he said, “is not unjust.” Then the visitor vanished. The elder rose at once and woke the other two. “Get up so that we may weep! Get up so that we may weep and ask mercy from God,” he said. “All three of us are guilty—I for this, and you for that.” “Yes,” they said, “yes, we did those things.” “Then weep.” They knelt down, asked for a confessor, and confessed all three of these sins. Three days later, judgments of acquittal came for all three. It was proved that they were not guilty of the charges brought against them, and they were summoned and released. Yes, let us not accuse God of injustice, and let us not blaspheme God. We are the sinners. He knows the reason for everything.
If we ask Him how and why, we shall learn many things; we shall glorify Him and be edified in this world.
It is read aloud. The sign of the Cross must be made properly: down and then from one side to the other. He does not ask you to make many signs of the Cross; make one, just one. If Satan is standing there and prevents you from making three, then make one—but make it with fervor. I am an Orthodox Christian, and I believe in the Holy Trinity, Who is without beginning. The Head is without beginning; He has no parents. One Person of the Three came into the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos one day. Can we not, then, make even one sign of the Cross? Let us leave aside the other duties of Christianity for the moment. Attending Church must not be merely seasonal. If I am going to watch a play, I will go from the beginning.
If I am invited to a meal, I will go from the beginning. I will not arrive after the others have eaten, when they are lifting the plates and clearing away the cutlery. I do everything properly except when it comes to the Church. “The third bell has rung.” Why, does the second bell trouble you? Is the first not meant for you? Is Matins not for you? Is Vespers not for you? Then for whom are they? We must therefore admit that we are sinners. And once a person admits that he is a sinner, what must he do? He must seek the medicine that heals sin. Just as we seek the appropriate medicine when we become physically ill, so in this sickness of the soul, which is called
sin, we must seek the appropriate medicine. When our Christ rose from the dead, everyone—even the Apostles themselves—saw Him come out of the tomb new, like a chick emerging from its shell, and expected to hear something new. What had He brought back from Hades? What happens there? What did He have to tell them? Surely they all stood in eager attention. And what did Christ say? “Peace be unto you,” twice. “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. Receive the Holy Spirit.” And He breathed on them.
He gave them the Holy Spirit. What were they to do with this gift? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Are we going to speak about sins yet again? This is the one and only issue. This was the purpose of God’s coming into the world. If He was crucified, died, was buried, rose again, ascended, and will come again, it was all because of human sin. There is no other issue. A person who is not concerned about his sins is not concerned about the entire work of the Incarnation accomplished by Christ. If God had written...
fifteen hundred years before Christ that one day His Son would come, be born of a Virgin, be born in Bethlehem, be crucified between criminals, descend into the tomb, dwell as a stranger in the tomb, give life to those in the graves, bestowing life, rise again, ascend, and come again—and a person takes all this and casts it aside, saying, “It is of no use to me”—then what sort of person are you, to say it is of no use to you? The whole divine economy in the flesh has your sin and my sin as its purpose. Christ had no other reason for coming into the world. The Passion of Christ, Great Friday, His burial, and His Resurrection have no other purpose. If sin did not stand between us and God, there would be no reason for His Church today, nor for His clergy,
nor for His Mysteries, all of which concern sin. Going to Church is not merely for exchanging wishes of “many years.” Holy Communion is not for getting a gold tooth, nor is it a sip of Coca-Cola or a little wine, as some mothers mock the Holy Mystery here before the Holy Altar. It is for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. The whole issue for mankind, then, is the issue of sin. He sends the Forerunner: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” Then He Himself comes: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” Are these the same words spoken by the Forerunner? Will You too speak to us about repentance, Lord? As God, have You nothing else to tell us? We have no other problem. Our problem is sin.
Have we put our sins in order? Then all is well. Have we not? Then there is no other matter to discuss. Everything you see and hear, everything that happens, and everything God arranges concerns the matter of sin. And did Christ encounter many sins? One. Eve once stretched out her hand toward the tree that God had told her not to touch. Do you remember what God said to her? “Why have you done this?” Wretched woman, what have you done? Do you understand what you did when you stretched out your hand there? Yet today you hear people say, “Let the sin be mine.” What will you do with the sin? Is it a gold sovereign whose value will rise? What is sin, that you think you can take possession of it? What will you do with it? Are your own sins not enough? Will you take mine as well? You call the dressmaker to sew on Sunday. She says, “I cannot come and work this Sunday.” And you reply, “Let the sin be mine.”
Can someone else bear this sin for her? You go off to work, and someone else will bear the sin? You will bear the sin. She will have her own sins, and you will have yours. Each person stands separately, and each will give account separately for what he yielded to, what he did, and what he brought about. So the whole issue is sin. Do you want your home life to improve? Do you want your work to improve? Do you want peace of soul? Do you want the walls to come down and no longer be needed? Do you want weapons no longer to be needed? Do you want everyone to be for you and no one against you? Become a Christian. Do not listen when the world says that we are in danger. We are in danger from no one. We are in danger from our own sin. We are in danger neither from the Russians nor from the Americans, neither from Litzevidis nor from the Bulgarians, nor from anyone else.
We are in danger from our own sin. “If God is with us, who can be against us?” That is what we say. “Who is so great a God as our God?” Read, if you wish, the history of the Hebrews, in which our own history is vividly portrayed. For we too are Hebrews. I do not know whether you are aware of this. We are of the lineage of Abraham. We are the new Israel. We are the blessed generation. We are a people whose Hellenism moves Christ deeply. Do you remember when Andrew received the Greeks who wanted him to present them to Christ? Yet they did not first go to Andrew.
They went to Philip, rather, and Philip took Andrew with him, and together they went to Christ. What did He then say concerning the Greeks? “The hour has now come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” When the Greeks came to meet Him, while He was still living before the Crucifixion, He spoke these words concerning us Greeks: “The hour has now come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” And throughout the whole world, across the entire planet and all five continents, Christ is truly and rightly worshipped only in Greece. This is so even though, in recent times, every trapdoor of Satan has opened, and every heresy from all over the world has come to swallow Greece. They will not swallow her. They will not swallow her. Of course, they may swallow her because of her sins. But if we repent, everything changes.
No one will be capable of shifting even one of our borders or boundaries. Whatever happens, every concession that is made, happens because of our sins. If we repent, we unbind the hands of Christ. And even if not everyone repents, but only a certain portion of the people, Greece still will not be destroyed. She will take a beating, because she deserves it on account of her sins, but she will not be destroyed. Greece will once again play a great role. Perhaps you were scandalized when I told you that we and the Hebrews are brothers and that we are of the lineage of Abraham. This is not my own claim; Holy Scripture says it. Those of you who study it may open the First Book of Maccabees in the Old Testament,
chapter twelve. There you will find the correspondence between Jerusalem and Sparta, and there you will understand that we are brothers, of the lineage of Abraham. When Christ’s blood was shed there, we were far away from there. That is why, when Christ told them the parable
of those servants who did not render what was due—some they murdered, others they killed, and so on—and then asked them, “What should that master do now?” they answered, “He will miserably destroy those wicked men and take this portion from them and give it to others.” “The Kingdom shall be taken from you and given to a nation.” A nation in the singular, not to many nations. It will be given to one nation, and that nation is this one. Hold fast as much as you can, return as much as you can, and help as many others as you can to return within. The more people return to Christ,
the more the balance turns in our favor and our safety is secured. When Abraham pleaded with Christ concerning the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, he heard that He was about to destroy the five cities and said to Him: “You are righteous, and You cannot destroy the wicked together with the good. If there are a hundred people there in the city, will You destroy it?” “No,” He said, “I will not destroy it.” “If there are eighty?” “No.” “If there are fifty?” “No.” “If there are thirty?” “No.” “If there are twenty?” “No.” “If there are ten?” “No.” Abraham stopped there; he went no further. There was only one family. And not even the whole family of Lot—there was only one righteous man.
Neither his daughters, nor his sons-in-law, nor Mrs. Lot, who remains a pillar of salt to this day—only Lot. Abraham was ashamed to go any lower. When there are five million people and not even ten righteous among them, what can I say to Him now? Can I ask Him not to destroy the place? We have bound His hands and do not allow Him to act.
In the writings of the Fathers there is a saying of three words: “Obedience in return for obedience.” This applies in every direction. A father wants his son to listen to him. A mother wants her daughter to listen to her. Yet the father himself does not listen to his own father, nor does the mother listen to hers.
Here is the principle: listen, and you will be listened to. Obedience in return for obedience. Since you do not listen to your own father and mother, how will others listen to you? And since you yourself are in debt and have so many shortcomings, how can you expect it? Then there are all the other absurdities: “If I ever see you holding a cigarette again, I’ll make you quit. Georgie, go buy me a packet of cigarettes.” If Georgie brings cigarettes to you, will he himself not smoke? What absurd things these are! Can this work? Of course not. The lady spends three hours before the mirror, then says, “If I see you putting nail polish on your fingernails, I’ll cut off your hands.” If it is wrong, Mother, then you should not do it either. And a person could think of a whole series of such things. “Quickly, off to Church! And bring me the newspaper.” The father reads his newspaper while the child is supposed to go to Church.
Do you understand? God sees such strange contradictions and hides His face from us. We do not listen to God, so how can we expect Him to listen to us? People say, “But surely they are God’s children.” Who are His children? Human beings? Are all human beings children of God? Seriously? When did He beget them? How were they begotten? Are the billions of people in the world all children of God? They are not children of God at all. They are God’s creatures. They are God’s creation, not His children. The children of God are those who have received Christ. “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” As long as a person does not receive Christ, see how he blasphemes Him, how he blasphemes His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, how he tears apart His Gospel and tramples upon His commandments.
Can such a person possibly be a brother of Christ and a child of God? Does the tree called God bear fruits like these? Do we bear any likeness to God? Do we bear any likeness to Christ? On what grounds are we His relatives? From the moment the first sin was committed, our kinship with God was broken, and man ceased to be a child of God. This is why Christ was crucified and came into the world: so that we might become children of God again—but only those who receive Christ. What does the Apostle say in the reading we hear on the night of the Nativity, when Christ is born, taken from Galatians 4:4? What does it say? This: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law,”
“to redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive adoption as sons”—so that through Jesus we might become children of God again. Yet for Jesus we think one little candle is enough and everything is settled. We will also stand outside at Pascha to receive the light, and then go home. And at Theophany we will stand outside to receive the blessing of water, and then leave for home. Is this Christianity? Is that truly what it is? Do you treat your belly, your flesh, and your body in this way? Do you care for them only from a distance? No: you sit in the sun, go shopping, make yourself comfortable, take baths. You have so many ways of tending this fleshly carcass—this Cain. It is Cain, the murderer of man’s soul. Abel is the soul, and the body is Cain. Woe to the person who does not distinguish between these two and understand that there is hostility between them.
What benefits the soul, the body does not want; and what the body wants does not benefit the soul. It is a hostile partnership, and woe to the person who fails to take heed.
Do not let the beast of burden seize the reins. The body is the beast of burden, and the soul is the rider. The body is the vehicle, and the soul is the driver. We reverse their roles: for the sake of the flesh, for the sake of the vehicle, we pull down the rider and trample him underfoot, so that whatever the flesh wants and loves may be done. That is where everything becomes confused. This partnership of soul and body should concern every one of us. But a person cannot be watchful and keep the proper guard unless he understands one detail. Allow me to tell you what it is. I would like to ask: How many deaths are there?
Everyone might answer, “There is one death; we go to the cemetery once.” Yet there is not one death, but two, because there are two elements to our existence. The body has a death, but the soul also has a death. Can you tell me when Adam died? The record says that Adam lived 939 years and died. Yes, bodily he died at the age of 939. But when did he die in soul? At the moment of disobedience, as we said last night. Death is the complete deprivation of life. I see many people here. Some are living, and others are dead.
They are dead because they have been cut off from life. Others are living because they remain in contact with life. For my body to live, it needs my soul. Without the soul, the body is dead; and for the soul to live, it needs my God. Is a soul that has no relationship with God living or dead? It is a walking cemetery, as the Prodigal Son was. What did God say to the elder brother concerning the younger? “This brother of yours was dead and is alive again.” He was dead. Yet he was out reveling with his girlfriends. Precisely for that reason! Far from his home and far from me, man is the living dead. Do you know how many walking cemeteries there are among us?
What inconsistency there is when you ask a father, “How are things at home? How are the children?” and he answers, “Glory to God, they are well, very well.” Can you tell me in what sense they are well? Because they bought a car? Because they have girlfriends or boyfriends? Because they have money and bring some home? Is that why they are well? Do they have any relationship with the Church? Do they go to Holy Confession and receive Holy Communion? Do they live pure lives, or does every young man have his girlfriend and every young woman her boyfriend? Why do you say, “Glory to God, we are well”? By what measure do you measure, and by what scales do you weigh? Who told you that you are well? To whom should I speak? Whom should I answer? If I were to die now and my coffin were lying down there—since perhaps none of you has time to die, let me be the one—and you saw my body, what would you say? What should you properly say, if you wished to speak accurately? What should you say?
If someone asked you, “What is that?” you would say, “That is Panagopoulos.” That would be false. It is not Panagopoulos at all; it is the remains of Panagopoulos, the remains of Panagopoulos. What does “remains” mean? What is left over. If you saw my soul standing here, what would you say? “Panagopoulos”? No, you would say, “the soul of Panagopoulos.” Here are the remains of Panagopoulos, and here is the soul of Panagopoulos. If the soul enters into Panagopoulos, what do we have? Panagopoulos himself. Therefore, man consists of two things. And just as the body dies when it is separated from the soul, so the soul dies when it is separated from Christ and from the Spirit. This is why people who have no relationship with Christ and no relationship with the Holy Chalice are the living dead.
A person must understand this. Do you remember what Christ said to that young man when he asked permission to go and bury his father? He said, “Lord, give me leave to go and bury my father.” “No,” Christ told him, “you will not go.” “My father?” “You will not go.” “But who will bury him?” “Let the dead bury their own dead. You follow Me.” There are dead men wearing neckties in your village; they will carry your father out for burial. Do not be afraid; send word to them. So let me consider—and you too, my listener, consider—what state we are in. Are we alive, or are we dead? Are we alive merely because we eat, speak, sing, and walk? We may possess the natural life that animals, birds, and fish also possess. But whether we possess spiritual life—that is the question.
So I have no spiritual life, because a barrier has come between us—a barrier that Christ came and tore down. Even a single sin is like this iconostasis you see here. The iconostasis represents that barrier, that veil in Solomon’s Temple, which was torn when Christ was being crucified outside the city on Golgotha and said, “It is finished.” The first miracle on Golgotha took place down there, in Solomon’s Temple: the veil was torn from top to bottom. It was the first miracle after the Crucifixion of Christ. The barrier of sin was broken, and the way between the believer and God was opened. They were united. The Cross of Christ—the Cross of Christ—united man with God. And yet, although He
opened this passage for man to go through, we put the barrier up again. We add new sins, close the way again, and shut Christ out; we shut God out. I do not know whether you grasp these things. I do not want to discourage you; I simply want to wake you up—to wake up a world that is asleep. And what kind of sleep? A deep sleep, a very deep sleep, and the world cannot even realize it. It seeks its happiness, its peace, its everything, in its wallet, in the political situation, in hopes that better days will come, in the security of the nation—but not where the true cause lies. You know that this is what doctors always do, and how they succeed: they seek to find the cause of the illness.
When they attack the cause of the illness, the result is beneficial. So it is here as well. All the misery around us exists because we have departed from Christ. Christ is not present in the home, in the family. There may be
an icon there, but then it is merely a decoration. It is forbidden to have an opinion. Many Christian homes have numerous icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Saints, and our Lord, but they forbid them to have any say: “You will stay there. I will offer you incense whenever I choose, and I will light your vigil lamp whenever I choose. But you have no say. Nor do you, Most Holy Theotokos, have any say. Now I will bring in the dressmaker to sew for me, and I will look in the mirror to see whether a short dress or a long dress suits me. I will say and do whatever I please, and you will remain in your place. Nor will you come into my bedroom and tell me whether I should have children with my husband. You stay over there, Lady Theotokos and Lord Jesus Christ. You are forbidden to interfere. Nor will you tell us what we should put on our table on Wednesdays, Fridays, or during Great Lent. You will remain over there, you
to whom we offer incense and whose vigil lamps we keep burning—and you had better make sure nothing happens to you.” Is this not who we are? Tell me, are we like this or are we not? The wonder is how He puts up with us. Christ is not Panagopoulos; Christ has no bitterness in Him. He waits, He is long-suffering, and He steadfastly persists, waiting for man’s metanoia, his repentance. Do you remember what I told you last night? Here there is mercy; there, however, there is judgment, and no mistakes are made. Have you seen the icon of the Precious Forerunner downstairs, with an axe beside him? That is the justice of God, but for now it rests there quietly. He has not taken it up yet. When He does, He will thoroughly cleanse the threshing floors—and woe to us. Since a person departs at an unexpected moment and does not know when he will go, should he not always be ready? He should. I do not know; perhaps I have wearied you again this evening, but these things are
necessary. They are a whole series of thoughts that should concern every person. So, if you agree, do not spend the days you are here carelessly. Do not concern yourselves with the delicacies at AB or with the scantily dressed people walking through the streets. Look after your soul. Many spiritual fathers are staying here while taking the baths. Father Aristeidis is also here; he too is a spiritual father and confessor, a very serious priest with many years of experience. Sit down, write out your sins from your earliest childhood, and make your confession. You may not leave your arthritis behind here; perhaps these baths and these waters will not cure it. But you can heal the arthritis of your soul. Let no one leave this place unrepentant and without confession. I pray that you will leave in good health both in body and, above all, in soul. That is all for this evening.
God willing, we shall meet again tomorrow.

Μην του πάρει τα ηνία το υποζύγιο. Το σώμα είναι το υποζύγιο, η ψυχή είναι ο αναβάτης. Το σώμα είναι το τροχοφόρο, η ψυχή είναι ο οδηγός. Εμείς αντιστρέφουμε τους όρους και, για λογαριασμό της σαρκός, του τροχοφόρου, κατεβάζουμε τον αναβάτη και τον ποδοπατούμε, να γίνει αυτό που θέλει η σάρξ, αυτό που αγαπά. Και εκεί τα μπλέκουμε. Ο συνεταιρισμός αυτός της ψυχής και σώματος όλους πρέπει να μας συγκινεί. Δεν θα μπορέσει όμως ο άνθρωπος να προσέξει και να φυλάξει την ανάλογη φρουρά, εάν δεν γνωρίζει μια λεπτομέρεια. Επιτρέψτε μου να σας την πω. Θα ήθελα να θέσω το ερώτημα: πόσοι θάνατοι υπάρχουν;
Είναι νεκροί, είναι αποκεκομμένοι από τη ζωή. Αυτοί είναι ζωντανοί, διότι έχουν επαφή με τη ζωή. Για να ζήσει το σώμα χρειάζεται την ψυχή μου. Άνευ της ψυχής το σώμα είναι νεκρόν, και για να ζήσει η ψυχή χρειάζεται τον Θεό μου. Η ψυχή που δεν έχει σχέση με τον Θεό είναι ζωντανή ή νεκρή; Κινητό νεκροταφείο, όπως ήταν ο Άσωτος Υιός. Τι είπε στον μεγάλο αδελφό για τον μικρόν ο Θεός; Ο αδελφός σου ούτος νεκρός ήτο και ανέζησε. Νεκρός ήτο. Αυτός γλεντούσε με τις φιλενάδες. Ακριβώς γι' αυτό. Μακριά από το σπιτικό, μακριά από μένα, είναι ζωντανός νεκρός ο άνθρωπος. Ξέρετε πόσα κινητά νεκροταφεία υπάρχουν μεταξύ μας;
Πόση ανακολουθία μετά, όταν ρωτάτε τον πατέρα: «Τι κάνετε σπίτι; Πώς τα παιδιά;» «Δόξα τω Θεώ, καλά, καλά». Μπορεί να μου πεις τι καλοσύνη έχουν; Γιατί πήραν αυτοκίνητο, γιατί έχουν φιλενάδα ή έχουν φίλους, γιατί έχουν χρήματα, φέρνουν στο σπίτι; Γι' αυτό είναι καλά; Έχουν καμιά σχέση με την Εκκλησία; Εξομολογούνται, κοινωνούν, έχουν αγνή ζωή ή έχει ο καθένας τη φίλη του και η καθεμιά τον φίλο της; Για ποιο λόγο λες «δόξα σοι ο Θεός, είμαστε καλά»; Με ποιο μέτρο μετράς, με τι ζυγίζεις; Ποιος σου είπε ότι είσαι καλά; Σε ποιον να πω, σε ποιον να απαντήσω; Αν εγώ πεθάνω τώρα και έχετε το φέρετρό μου εκεί πέρα, γιατί εσείς μπορεί να μην αδειάζετε να πεθάνετε, ας πεθάνω εγώ. Το φέρετρό μου εκεί κάτω και βλέπετε το σώμα μου, τι θα πείτε; Τι πρέπει να πείτε κανονικά, για να κυριολεκτήσετε; Τι πρέπει να πείτε;
