Summary
Humanity knowingly follows the path of sin, misuses God-given freedom, and continues toward judgment despite recognizing the difference between good and evil. Merely bearing the name Christian is insufficient; authentic Christianity requires Christ within, spiritual progress, worship, fasting, self-denial, and a transformed life. Because every heartbeat carries each person toward death and judgment, the lecture urges immediate repentance and warns that Christ is both perfect love and perfect justice.

I assume that you too will agree with me that, as human beings, we are not doing well today. Now, why are we not doing well? More or less everyone knows. Yet we continue to follow the crooked path. Why? I want to believe that it is our sin which, in a certain way, lulls us to sleep, and so we go on living as though this were the proper way, as though we had come into this world simply to pursue our own interests. Do you understand what it means to want to go east while walking west? People tell you, “You know, this is not the road you should be taking. You are going in the opposite direction.” You answer, “Thank you very much for reminding me and pointing it out,” and then continue along the same road. This is inconceivable. Anyone with even a little reason cannot understand it. And yet this is precisely how we carry on. Now, as you know, everything has an end; everything has its limits. When
God’s patience will be exhausted, I do not know. But we must understand that even if only one drop falls into a glass every million years, one day that glass will be full. Do you remember what Christ once said while He was here on earth? “How long shall I bear with you?” How long, He says, must I endure you? This very thing is happening today. No one can say that he does not know. Today no one has the right to say, “I do not know.” Man has reached the moon, yet he claims not to know that one thing is evil and another is good. Look, when a cat causes some damage in the house and sees the lady of the house coming, it runs away, because it understands that it is going to be punished.
My friend, the cat sees the fireplace tongs lying there, as they are called, and it runs away, because it knows that it ate the fish. And do I not know what is evil? Does the other person not know what is evil? Does the mother who kills her children not know that it is evil? Do I not know that it is wrong when I do not fast on Wednesday and Friday? Do I not know these things? Of course I do. And yet I continue along the same road. So everyone knows that we are not doing well. We all discuss it and say that the wrath of God will break over our heads, that we will suffer hardships and wars, and that we will not know where to hide. We know all this, yet our lives do not change. If we had no understanding, someone might say that we did not realize it.
We discuss the fact that something is wrong, and what is wrong is neither the sun nor the moon; it is man. Everything follows its proper course except man. Man misuses his freedom. God made him free and respects his freedom, but man misuses it. Once an atheist stood at the podium and said, “If God exists, I give Him three minutes to come and wipe me out.” The three minutes passed, and God did not annihilate him, destroy him, or strike him down. He then had the audacity to continue: “You see? If God existed, He would have harmed me, since you claim that He exists.”
“You say that He is almighty, and this, and that, and everything else.” An elderly woman asked to speak. “May I answer?” she said. “Of course you may.” So she went up and stood at the podium so that everyone else could hear her through the microphone. “If you had a child,” she asked him, “and he disobeyed you, would you kill him?” “No,” he replied. “If he insulted you, would you kill him?” “No.” “Then how could this all-good God kill you, His own child? What would you want from your child? Would you not want repentance? Would you not want him to ask forgiveness?” “Yes.” “Thank you. That is all I wanted to say. That is why God did not destroy you.”
I pray that you will come to your senses. If we manage to acquire a house, an apartment, a plot of land, a little money, some savings, and so forth, people consider that intelligence. They say, “He knows what he is doing. He understands life. He deserves to live. He is a clever man.” Whether he has any relationship with Christ or with the Church, whether he blasphemes, commits fornication or adultery, has children or refuses to have them, steals, or dishonors others—none of this is even discussed. They say that he knows how to live. He bought a car and a color television, and this and that and everything else. People applaud him and call him fortunate.
He even congratulates himself: “If only there were more people like me!” Yet he is someone to weep over, someone for whom there should be penthos, mourning for sin—someone for whom funeral wheat should be prepared. What we call good, admirable, and worthy of applause is not so in God’s eyes. The upright, wise, and intelligent person is the one who prepares for death. We are going toward death. Where else are we going—toward earthly life? No, we are going toward death. A person who does not prepare to die will nevertheless die one day, whether he wants to or not, and sadly his life will have been a failure. It would have been better if he had never passed through this world. And so, although today there are so many achievements, so much knowledge, and so much cleverness,
so much education, there are also so many atrocities. You see a mother, they say, set upon her own child to tear it to pieces, even paying the doctor to dispose of it. A wild beast does not do that. Does it? Today we will not even step on an ant. We know how to behave and have learned so many refined manners, yet at the same time we remain lions. A cat does not do this; a dog does not do it. Try to take a kitten from its mother, and she will tear you apart. Try to take a chick from a hen, and she will rush at you to peck out your eyes. Yet the educated person does this, the intellectual does this—the person who will not step on a cockroach and is frightened of a little mouse does this. He is savage. Why? Because there is a beast within him. Do not look at what a person is outwardly. Look at what he is inwardly and at the energy working within him.
How many cold-blooded murders take place today, how many mutilations, how many frauds, thefts, and robberies! And who commits them? Not simply the educated person, but the deformed person—deformed by his so-called education. One man, a lawyer, stabbed his girlfriend thirty-eight times and threw her body away at Arkadokampos. Was he some kind of wildcat? A young university student threw his girlfriend out of a window. What good is his education to me? What good is it that he is a lawyer? What good is it that another was a doctor, another a midwife, or another a student, if they did not have Christ within them? These were the results. Look every day and see where this man who reached the moon is heading—the man whom his fellow human beings applaud and admire.
This is what man has become today. Before long, we will no longer be able to go out safely, just as people cannot do abroad. Abroad, people are already indoors before sunset. They cannot go out. A gentleman from here once traveled there. He had the telephone number of a woman he knew, and when he arrived in New York he called her from the airport. It was still daytime, with about an hour of sunlight remaining. He told her where he was staying and asked her to come and collect him by car. She said, “Please stay at the hotel. I will come for you tomorrow at eight. We cannot go out now. We simply do not go outside.” Little by little, this will happen here as well, and we will live to see it.
Man is in danger from man. What kind of man is endangered by another man? The man who does not have Christ. Christ is the One who sets things in order. He is the One who gives man his true worth and teaches him the worth of his fellow human being. It is impossible for a true Christian to do evil. It is impossible for him to steal, dishonor another, use violence, cause harm, lie, swear falsely, slander, or envy. Such a person simply cannot do these things. Saint Paul says—and those of you who read will have encountered it—“But if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness.” We are called Christians, but we do not possess Christianity. We bear the name Christian, but we are not Christians.
Is our life Christian? We have a fine title. Imagine, for example, a dry cleaner called “The Swan.” You go there and receive dirty clothes. You call yourself “The Swan”—white, clean, purer than a dove—yet the goods you give me are filthy. That is what we are like. It is the same with us. Someone was called a Christian, yet in his life he was a thief. Another was called a Christian, yet in her life she was a criminal. What are we, then? Once again the words come to our minds and our lips: “How long shall I bear with you?” How long will God endure us? If only the whole world would repent in time. But will it? From what I read and hear, I certainly believe that God is not in haste.
A thousand years for God are as one day. “For a thousand years in Your sight, O Lord, are like yesterday when it is past,” and one day is also as a thousand years. Consequently, since Christ came, was crucified for us, died, was buried, rose in the Resurrection, and was taken up in the Ascension, only two days have passed. Two thousand years are two days for God. God is waiting for us. But will we make good use of His long-suffering and goodness? That is the question. Although He made us free, He respects us and does not coerce our freedom. But we too must be willing. That is why a Father of the Church says, “He who created you without you will not redeem you without you,” insofar as this depends upon our consent.
That is, the One who created you without asking you cannot save you without asking you. Man must desire it. God waits for us one year, then two, then five; He waits for us even a hundred years. Yet, the way we are going, even if they put us in chains, we would always remain the same. We do not improve at all. Doctors keep charts on which they observe a child’s progress in relation to an illness, age, height, and weight.
They see when the child is progressing, when he remains stationary, and when he is falling behind; then, as scientists, they act accordingly to help him. Do we keep any such chart for our own lives? Do we make any progress, so that the added time given to us through God’s long-suffering and goodness is not wasted? For most of us, it is wasted. We are like horses tied to a mulberry tree, stamping their feet and tearing up the soil without taking a single step. You may find many Christians moving backward, but it is hard to find them moving forward. Those who advance in the Christian life can be counted on one hand. Few have grasped the meaning of it. Few have shown the spiritual resolve to labor for their salvation. So I say that although there are millions of Christians today, I do not know how many are being saved. Some years ago, someone saw Saint Nektarios of Aegina, who said that
souls are going down to Hades like falling snow. They keep going, while scarcely one soul can be found going to Paradise. At one monastery, an angel likewise said, “For sixty-five years I have not taken a soul from this monastery to Paradise.” My dear people, if you visit the cities and provinces now, you will later see a great number of bodies being exhumed without having decomposed. “It is the medicines,” people say. Who says this? It is estrangement from God, a curse, sin—sin that remains bound. In one cemetery there is an enormous number of them; the world is full of bodies that have not decomposed, and everyone attributes them to
medicines. Others claim that the soil is unsuitable. How is it suitable for the person buried beside yours, yet unsuitable only for your own relative? How is it suitable for the one next to him, the one above him, the one beside him, and the one over here, but not for the one in the middle? God is just. Though He is long-suffering, He does not forget. And if we refuse to make good use of God’s long-suffering and goodness—which, according to Saint Paul, leads us to metanoia, to repentance—what then? He says, “Do you not know that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” Do you not understand this? Some say that God does not exist. Others say that God has no power. They say this because they see the criminal committing crimes and still walking about freely.
They see the wicked woman committing a crime against her own child, yet continuing to walk about, eat, sustain herself, sin, and do all the rest. But the reason is not that God does not exist or that God has no power. No. He both exists and has power, but God is long-suffering. God is long-suffering. The Greek word is a compound expression: He keeps His anger far off. He postpones judgment, postpones cutting short our lives, postpones Hell, and gives man time to repent and confess. Slowly or quickly, God is not in haste; God waits. Five thousand five hundred years passed before Christ came into the world, from the time He created Adam and Eve and that sin was committed. He could have done it within ten days
or within a month. Instead, He waited five and a half thousand years for the necessary conditions to be prepared so that Christ might come into the world. This long-suffering of God should make us afraid, because we do not know when His judgment will break forth or where it will strike. I remember something from my own experience when I was in Albania during the war. I confess that I was not afraid when the Italian artillery and the mortars were firing. I was afraid, and could not close my eyes, when there was deathly silence at the front. I did not know where the attack would come from. Would they strike us from behind, from the rear, from the side? Where would they strike us? Nothing happened, yet I could not close my eyes at all. For entire months, whenever the front was silent, fear would not let me sleep.
When they were firing and we were firing toward the east, we knew that the danger was coming from that direction. There we would face it; there we would make our stand. In the same way, this long-suffering, this stillness—the fact that God does not punish us although we deserve punishment—should make us afraid, or rather move us to make good use of His long-suffering. Do you know how many things we have never confessed? Certainly, if we pray sincerely and say, “My Christ, bring up from the hidden depths, from the past, from forgetfulness and oblivion, everything I have done that makes it difficult for me to enter Your Kingdom,” many things will be revealed and brought to the surface. We have never asked Him to help us cleanse the things of the past.
A few days ago, I confessed a sin from thirty-five years ago, which I had committed thirty-five years earlier, and God brought it back to my mind. Whatever sin is not confessed here will be found there. Sins do not expire. Do not listen to people who say that they do good works. Such people are foolish. If salvation were a matter of good works, why did Christ have to be crucified? Could He not have sent an angel to strike from above and say, “Gentlemen, do good works, and come, so that I may place you in My Kingdom”? Was it necessary for Him to be crucified? Was it necessary for Him to descend into the depths of Hades? Was it necessary for Him to rise again and say, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained”? There would have been no reason for any of this.
And so, He is the Creator.
He is the Redeemer, He is the Savior, and He is the One who ordained, in this sense, how the sins of human beings are to be blotted out. Sins do not expire. They do not rust, decay, grow old, or disappear miraculously. That simply does not happen. Every one of them will remain written in black and white in the hands of Satan, and one day he will present them. If a person knew that every time he sins—whether in word, deed, or thought—three witnesses record it, he would tremble. He would truly tremble. Three record it; therefore, for the sin to be erased, all three must strike it from their record.
For those who do not know, I will tell you who records it: Satan, our guardian angel, and our conscience. When a person sins, all three record it. When a person does something good, two record it. Out of malice, Satan does not record the good; he does not want it. Two record it: the conscience and the angel. In the old church, when they painted the icons above, beside the Beautiful Gate, among the other scenes—the Vine, the Mystical Supper, and so forth—they depicted a hand writing, an eye seeing, and an ear hearing. These belong to God, who sees everything, hears everything, and records everything. If Satan...
...is commanded to remind us of particular incidents, we will shudder. For us, those things have been put away in storage, and we do not even want to discuss them, because when we remember them, we blush. Have you wronged someone? What does it matter if the years have passed, if a notary came and erased the record, if the matter was forgotten, or if those whom you owed, wronged, or robbed have died? You still owe what you owe. The justice of God will seize you in the morning and place you in the dock. There will be no excuse—not the passage of time, nor the circumstances. “But you know, I suffered losses too.” Then let the loss be yours. The other person must not bear the loss if you wish to be saved. Since you lost what was yours, you cannot simply tell him...
...to lose what was his as well. If you are a true Christian, you will make every effort to settle your account with him, whoever he may be and however long ago your dealings with him took place, whether those dealings were dishonest or innocent, if you wish to be free of condemnation under the justice of God. Otherwise, there is no path to salvation. And yet there are people who call themselves Christians and make offerings. Often you see great acts of charity bearing their names, icons bearing their names, and even monasteries and churches bearing their names—but these were paid for with what they obtained through injustice and theft. The money belonged to someone else; it did not come from their own honest labor. We must wake up. We are very clever about many things. We must also become wise concerning the salvation of our souls.
This morning, when I was speaking here in the Church, I said that people in the world excuse themselves by claiming that they have no time. Yet we will gladly set out early in the morning when an opportunity arises. If someone tells you, “Come to Aidipsos,” you will gladly go. If you fall ill and develop cancer, you will find the time and means to travel to Paris, London, or even to the ends of the earth. You will go; of course you will go, and it is good that you should. I am not some poor wretch who wishes illness upon us—may it never be! But if we do become ill, we will find the time. So we have time to become ill, time to seek treatment, and time to die; but we have no time for metanoia, for repentance, and Holy Confession. The truth is: I do not want to. I do not want to. What has brought us together here is a double-edged sword. We could use this time...
...in which we are tending to our bodily needs for the benefit of our souls as well. God gives us these opportunities, often so that we may hear things to which we had never paid attention. It comes from the love and providence of God that He creates circumstances we had not considered, in order to remind us, so that some may advance and others may at least begin. Both things happen. There are people who are already making progress; let them advance still further, because perfection is found in martyrdom, as we say. Christianity does not consist merely in saying, “I do not eat on Friday, I do not eat oil on Wednesday, and therefore I am a Christian.” That is not Christianity.
A person must sacrifice himself in an entirely different way, even to the point of martyrdom. Of course, we are not counted worthy of martyrdom, and for that very reason God does not grant us martyrdom. If a Muslim came here today and said to us, “The Qur’an or the Gospel?” we would say, “The Qur’an.” We do not possess the inner strength to resist as our Fathers and heroes resisted. What strength they had! Christ takes pity on us and protects us, in this sense, from reaching such a difficult trial and losing our souls. Our souls are so weak and cheaply sold. This too belongs to the providence of God. But we have never thought of these things in this way or viewed them from this perspective. And so, although there are millions of Christians today, Christianity itself is absent. There is no Christian life. A Christian does not even know how to make the sign of the Cross. If you wish, sit one day near the entrance where the people come in, and see whether they make the sign of the Cross.
They do not even make the sign of the Cross. Satan prevents them from doing so, because a properly made sign of the Cross burns Satan. Some vague motion in the air, some shapeless gesture made along the way, does not trouble Satan. Remember: a seal has authority and power only when it is firmly impressed and can be read. The sign of the Cross must be made properly, at the right points from one side to the other. You do not need to make many signs of the Cross—make just one. If Satan is standing here and preventing you from making three, then make one. Raise your hand: I am a Christian. I confess the Theotokos, and I believe in the Holy Trinity, which is without beginning. The Head is without beginning and has no parents. One Person of the Three came into the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos and took flesh from her.
So, as I was saying, we do not make the sign of the Cross. And let us not even begin to speak of the rest of Christianity. Church attendance? No. We attend only on special occasions. If I am going to see a play, I will arrive at the beginning. If I am invited to a meal, I will arrive at the beginning. I will not come after everyone else has eaten, when they are clearing away the plates and gathering up the cutlery. I do everything properly except when it comes to the Church. The third bell has rung—but what was wrong with the second? Was the first bell not meant for you? Is Matins not for you? Is Vespers not for you? Then for whom are they? Are they only for the priests? Are these services not offered for us? How, then, can a person who makes not even the smallest effort to deepen and improve his life of faith...
...expect to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? We would be terrified if we could truly grasp what is required for us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. For everything, we say, “I do not think that matters. There is no harm in this. God is good. Christ is love.” Who told you that God is evil? Who told you that Christ is not love? But tell me this as well: who told you that Christ is not also justice? There, we will have to answer for all these things. He who is love is also justice. Christ has two feet; Christ is not lame. Is He only love, soothing and tending to your weaknesses and mine, while justice is left aside? His blood cries out for vindication. How...
...could the blood of Abel, which Cain shed, reach Heaven, while the blood of Christ is shed in vain? Impossible! We are utterly foolish. So if these words, which God is granting us to speak at this hour, find any response in your hearts, do not set them aside. Do not cast them away. Tomorrow does not belong to us. I have been speaking now for thirty-five minutes. Multiply that by sixty or seventy beats, depending on how many times each person’s heart beats per minute. Let us see: three times seven is twenty-one, five times seven is thirty-five...
My heart has beaten roughly two thousand two hundred and fifty times. Take your pulse and ask it why it is beating, and it will answer: “I am walking. I am not merely beating; I am walking.” Those tick-tocks you hear are footsteps. “Stop! Where are you going?” “I am taking you to your resting place. I am taking you to your grave.” “Stop! Do not go that way!” And it may take you there an hour sooner, merely for trying to stop it. Has anyone ever thought of this? Tell me, who is not walking toward his grave? An astronaut? Who is exempt? Tell me. A wise man? Solomon? A ruler? Hitler? Who? Napoleon the Great? Who?
Tick-tock, tick-tock—it carries us toward the grave. Tell me, then: how many more steps remain before you reach your grave, and how many remain for me? What if only ten remain? Why could I not lose my breath this very moment and collapse to the ground? Does anyone owe me life? Is anyone indebted to me or to you? Who could owe you that? Where, then, is our philosophy? Where is human cleverness? Where is it? Woe on the Day of Judgment to the person who does not take care to make use of the goodness and long-suffering of God. Woe to him! God sent Apostles, He sent Prophets, He came Himself, and He continues to send Saints; yet we remain the same and even blaspheme Him, as though nothing were happening.
Here the words so often repeated during Holy Week are fitting, when we read the Gospel passages concerning the unrepentant Judas: “Glory to Your long-suffering, O Lord.” This long-suffering should make our knees give way beneath us. But we know neither what Hell is nor what Paradise is. Why? Because Satan conceals his existence. If a person met the devil face to face, he would never follow him. And if Christ showed us His Paradise, we would never again follow Satan or separate ourselves from Christ. But because the human person is free, God allows Satan to act; and God Himself waits in His own way, acts, and helps the person—if that person desires to be saved. For the human person must also contribute something to his salvation.
You who hear these words, and those who will hear them because this talk is being recorded and the tapes are carried to the ends of the inhabited world, will immediately have the thought rise within you: “What am I to do? How can this happen? I see that these things are true, but I cannot do it. I see it, I hear it, and the words you speak are sound arguments. But I lean the other way; I lean toward the flesh. I like fashion, I like the world, I am attracted to the woman next door or the man next door, and I like the easy way of making money. I like these things. How can I change, when I am evil within? How can it happen?” This is the central question. It is not a simple saying that can be explained in two minutes. It could require a series of thirty lessons to show how human nature can be changed.
I will tell you something briefly. You see Christians coming to the Church. If you ask one of them, “Why do you go to the Church?” he answers, “I respect God, so I go to the Church. I believe in God, so I go to the Church. I love God, so I go to the Church.” Are you serious when you say these things? Are you telling the truth? “Should I not go to the Church?” You are lying. I see you when the priest comes out and says, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,” and you do not approach. Therefore, you have neither the fear of God, nor faith, nor love. So outside the Church you speak falsely. Is that not true? Am I lying? We may see a thousand people in the Church, yet only two or three babies are brought forward. Sometimes a mother who has killed her other children brings one child to receive Holy Communion; or the grandmother brings the child because the mother does not come to the Church at all.
This man or woman does not approach, even though he or she came to the Church and lit a candle. “He lit a candle,” someone says. Why? What does the candle you lit say? Tell me, what does it say? Do you know? The candle says: “Just as this little candle gives light and is useful to those around it, so through my life I too am a light and a help to others. I will melt away completely, and nothing of me will remain upon Your altar.” Is this true of us? Are we the light of the world? Or do others learn many evil things from us and commit sins that are not even spoken of in the world?
We are meant to be a light to others. We are meant to melt away and sacrifice ourselves for Christianity. We offer our life, our knowledge, and everything we possess so that knowledge of the faith may spread. Is our home light or darkness? Is our life as a whole light or darkness? And know this: the world has had its fill of words. It wants life; it wants an example, and it watches how you live. Do you do the things you say? Do you put your words into action? Do you live the things you remind others about? Simply saying, “I came and lit a candle in the Church,” does not make me a Christian. Since I have touched upon it, the candle contains a whole teaching, so let me explain it more fully.
There at the candle counter is a coffin, and inside that coffin are candles. Is there not a coffin there with candles inside it? Those candles are us, who were once dead. Each person who comes takes himself, as it were, carries himself over to the candle stand, and fixes himself upon it—right here. And what is the candle stand? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Son once came into the world and became man. He is Christ. And again, below: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I fix myself upon it and say, “I who was once dead am now alive, because Christ has brought me to life. And just as Christ was light in the world—‘I have come as light into the world’—so I too am light in the world.”
It is a whole confession of faith. It is not simply a matter of paying a drachma, checking the price, and lighting a candle. What does God gain from that, if what the burning candles signify is not woven into my life? The beehives belong to Christ—even though many candles today are not wax at all, but various kinds of fat. But let us suppose they are Christ’s own candles. He is not moved by that. You take what is Mine and place it here; or you bring Me oil. That is not what I seek. Or you bring cement and bricks and build Me a house, so that I will not be cold or hot. These things are Mine already. I want what is yours. And what does man produce? What is man’s own product? Sins. Nothing else—sins. For whatever good he may do has foreign admixtures within it: calculation,
self-interest, personal advantage, and many other things. It cannot stand before the justice of God. Man’s pure and genuine product is his sins, and that is what God asks him to give. I do not know whether you have ever heard how Saint Hilarion the Great once reached Jerusalem and went into the cave to venerate the holy place. There he fell to his knees and began to cry out: “My Christ, what can I offer You in return for what You have done for me? What do I have to give You? Tell me, and I will give it.” Then he heard a voice from the sanctuary screen saying, “Hilarion, give Me your sins. I want nothing else. What could you give Me? Will you bring Me oil from My own olive trees? Will you bring Me wax from
My own beehives, as I said before? What can you bring Me? This is why I came into the world: I came for the sins of the world, and there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents. What greater joy could there be? What will you give Me—money? Will you hang your garments upon that icon, while refusing to hang your sins there before Me? Will you bring Me a crown of thorns on Great Friday? What good is that if you do not make a crown of your sins and bring them to Me in Holy Confession? You give Me joy when you give Me your sins, when you give Me your weaknesses, when you give Me your passions. Then I rejoice; then heaven rejoices.” And you see, a person can offer everything. He can even become a sacrifice, yet he will not give up his sins. He finds a thousand and one arguments to justify remaining in sin, claiming that everyone around him is unworthy.
He alone imagines himself worthy, while the others are supposedly unfit to hear and absolve his sins. Many times this inconsistent person even receives Holy Communion from the hands of the very priest he condemns as unfit to hear his confession. He considers the priest fit to give him Holy Communion, so that he himself may receive without having confessed. These things are absurd. But let me return to the subject. The tenth plague of Pharaoh is described in the twelfth chapter of Exodus. This is a whole lesson in itself, and, if God permits, I will complete it for you one evening. For now, however, I want to take one part of it and apply it to what we are discussing: why is it that man cannot truly become human, despite all his
education, despite his knowledge, despite science, despite everything? He remains a beast; inwardly, he remains a beast. Education without a life in Christ can make a person more dangerous. Such education can cut both ways; it can truly become a double-edged sword. Woe to you if you fall into the hands of an educated man who uses his knowledge for evil. So let me give you an example that fits our subject exactly. The tenth plague of Pharaoh was this: one night an angel of the Lord would pass through Egypt and slay every firstborn of the Egyptians, from the firstborn child to the firstborn animal, so that
the Egyptians would be mourning their dead that day, giving the Hebrews the opportunity to depart. Pharaoh had self-serving reasons for refusing to let the Israelite people go, for they numbered about three million. About six hundred thousand of them were workers, and for economic, self-interested reasons he would not release them. Various hardships were sent upon the Egyptians—the plagues, as we call them—but they did not repent. Pharaoh remained hard-hearted, and so came this tenth plague. But the angel said to Moses, “Tell your people to take a lamb on the tenth of Nisan, the tenth of March.
The lamb must be without blemish. It must not be lame or blind. It must be the best of the flock. You shall keep this lamb until the fourteenth day of the month—five days: the tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth. On the fifth day, the fourteenth, in the afternoon before sunset, you shall slaughter it.” He said, “You shall collect its blood in a basin, and with that blood you shall mark the doors of the house where you are staying: the lintel above and the two doorposts, as a type of the Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For tonight an angel will pass through to destroy the firstborn of the Egyptians, and wherever he finds the blood of the lamb, he will not enter. And take careful note of this as well:
You shall not eat this lamb boiled, nor shall you eat it raw or prepared in any other way. You shall eat it roasted with fire, roasted whole upon a spit. This is where our own custom comes from: at Pascha we roast lambs. You shall not cut off its head or its feet, nor remove its entrails. The lamb must remain whole. You shall wash the entrails and the rest, place the whole lamb upon the spit, and roast it. You must be dressed and ready, with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, a staff in your hand,
and your traveling bag with you. You shall eat it in haste, without breaking it. You shall eat the flesh and leave the skeleton intact. You shall also have bitter herbs and the other prescribed things. Now, all this was a type of Christ. That lamb was a type of Christ, and that blood was a type of the blood of Christ. Indeed, the text itself says so. Those of you who have the Old Testament will find it in Exodus, chapter twelve, verse eleven: “It is the Lord’s Passover.” This is Pascha. The word Pascha was written for the first time in 1430 BC. Pascha did not begin when Christ came. Pascha is a Hebrew word,
meaning exodus, passage, or passing over. That is Pascha—the Passover of Christ, the Passover of the Lord. And, as I said, this was written 1,430 years before Christ. Now let us consider how this was actually done. Take a lamb today and roast it. How would you roast it? Here, six hundred thousand families were going to roast lambs. Could they all go to a blacksmith and order iron spits? They would have gone out among the trees—to a cypress, a fir, or some other tree—and cut a length of wood, like the makeshift spits we ourselves make. They would fasten another piece of wood across the back end so that they could turn it, thus making a spit. So take a spit like that: a wooden shaft with a crosspiece at the back.
If you hold it upright, what do you see? You see a cross. Take that spit, drive it into the lamb’s head, and pass it through the body until it reaches the feet. Then fasten the lamb to that wooden spit and stretch out its two front legs. What do you see? Christ crucified.
The entrails remain inside, the head remains, and the feet remain. Why? Do you know what this was meant to signify? In the generations to come, man would eat this Lamb of God, of whom that earlier lamb was a type. He would eat Him when receiving Holy Communion—not merely “body and blood of Christ,” as certain inattentive clergymen among us say, but “the body and the blood of Christ.” “The servant of God Demetrios receives the body and the blood of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins and eternal life.” Not simply “body and blood,” but “the body and the blood of Christ.” When a person receives Holy Communion, he receives the whole Christ.
This remains true even if the Pearl—the consecrated portion—is infinitesimally small, so small that within the holy spoon one might sometimes need a magnifying glass to see it. Nevertheless, the whole Christ is there: His head, His feet, and His inward parts. For when a person receives Christ in Holy Communion, he receives the nous of Christ, the spiritual intellect of Christ; he receives the compassionate heart of Christ; he receives the feet of Christ. And when a person is filled with the nous of Christ and the compassion of Christ, and when his feet and hands are guided and blessed by Christ, he cannot remain a beast, as man is today. That is the reason. And as long as you see the Holy Chalice come out through the Holy Doors covered, return covered, and the people do not approach, expect humanity to become an even greater jungle.
Christ alone can tame man, ennoble him, make him truly human, teach him to offer himself for others, and make him a genuine Christian. Do you know what the word Christian means? A Christian is one who places himself at the service of another. A Christian who does not place himself, his wallet, his knowledge, his strength, and his whole being at the service of another—even at the service of his enemy—cannot be called a Christian. He is not a Christian, and therefore he should not bear the name. This, then, my beloved, is what is lacking today: as I told you, man does not commune with Christ so that he may become a true Christian. In the Old Testament, in Psalm 33,
the Church has taken this Psalm and appointed it to be read at the end of the Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts celebrated during Great Lent. One of its verses says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” The Greek word is chrēstos, “good,” spelled with an eta, not Christos with an iota: “the Lord is good.” Do you know what all the doors, doorframes, and other fittings in Solomon’s Temple were made from in the Old Testament? Olive wood. Olive wood. And all the oil lamps burned olive oil. They did not burn electricity, as is now the custom among young mothers and young homemakers who have driven Christ out of the home. The olive oil teaches us the goodness and long-suffering of God.
Mercy, mercy—that is what the oil teaches: goodness, love, kindness, favor, and long-suffering. That is its meaning. For precisely this reason, as I have said here on another occasion, no oil lamp burns at the great chandelier called the Polyeleos. Oil burns here, oil burns there, oil burns everywhere, but there no lamp is found. Why is there no oil lamp here at the throne? Is it because they cannot afford a little oil, or because our Christ is not there? He is there just as He is here. Then why? Because there is no mercy there. There is judgment. And at the Judgment there is no mercy. The time for mercy has ended. Judgment is without mercy. This is meant to remind us that if you are not reconciled here,
“Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us”; if you do not receive Holy Communion here “for the remission of sins and eternal life,” you will come there one day—and woe to you when you do. That is the reason. Pray, my beloved, that the Holy Chalice may be uncovered. Pray, my beloved, that receiving Holy Communion may become a daily reality, so that human nature may be changed. Otherwise, it will simply become a jungle, a world ruled by the law of the jungle, despite education, despite knowledge, despite all the so-called progress of man. Day by day, man will become a beast. That is what I had to say this evening, as a first offering now that we have come together. God willing, we shall continue tomorrow evening.

δύο χιλιάδες διακόσιους πενήντα κτύπους περίπου έκανε η καρδιά η δικιά μου. Πιάστε τον σφυγμό σας και ρωτήστε τον γιατί κτυπάει και θα σας πει ότι περπατώ, δεν κτυπώ, περπατώ. Αυτά τα τικ-τακ που ακούς είναι βαδίσματα. Σταμάτα! Και πού πας; Σε πάω στο κοιμητήρι σου, στο νεκροταφείο σου πάω. Σταμάτα, μην πηγαίνεις προς τα εκεί. Θα πας μια ώρα γρηγορότερα να μας σταματήσουν. Πώς σκέφτηκε ποτέ ο άνθρωπος; Πες μου, ποιος είναι εκείνος που δεν βαδίζει προς τον τάφο του; Αστροναύτης είναι; Ποιος είναι, πείτε μου; Σοφός είναι; Σολομών είναι; Τι είναι; Δυνάστης; Χίτλερ είναι; Τι είναι, πείτε μου; Μέγας Ναπολέων είναι; Τι είναι;
