Summary
The lecture affirms the reality of magic and demonic influence while teaching that close union with Christ protects believers from their power. Personal troubles and apparent misfortunes should be examined within divine providence, since present suffering may expose past wrongdoing and lead a person toward repentance. The lecture finally defends asking the Theotokos and the saints for their intercessions, rejecting the claim that they cannot hear many prayers at once.

Continuing from what was said yesterday, allow me to add the following questions, concerns, and objections, as we called them, which in one way or another require an answer and some clarification. Among them I find this question: “Mr. Panagopoulos, does magic really exist? And if there are people who practice magic, how can someone avoid it, and how can its effects be broken?” This too is a reasonable question, and I thought I should not overlook it. You will have heard people speaking about this even today. Many, of course, do not believe in it. They say, “I do not believe in magic.” But when you do not believe that the enemy exists, sooner or later he will trap you. It is good to believe that the enemy exists. If you say that you do not believe in magic, that means you do not believe in the Church. Do you have a church of your own? Do you know that the Church has exorcisms against magic? Are you aware of that? Have you ever read the life of Saint Cyprian, who was a master of sorcery? Have you read the exorcisms of Basil the Great and the divine John Chrysostom? At least we cannot accuse them as we accuse some priests today, claiming that they have reasons for collecting money.
At least we cannot accuse those saints of that. So if you reject the reality of magic, you are rejecting the Church, whose purpose is not to mislead people but to arm and protect them, because magic truly does exist. Yes. Now, how can someone avoid it? Ask Saint Justina. Saint Cyprian could not overcome her, and through her he himself became a saint and burned his books in the public square. He was no ordinary sorcerer who cast spells on married couples and homes, or bound the clouds so that they would not rain. He was a master of sorcery in the fullest sense of the word. And yet Saint Justina defeated him.
That was because she had a living relationship with Christ. A person who has such a relationship with Christ cannot be swallowed up by Satan. Magic has no hold over him. It takes hold of those who are unarmed. They believe only in theory; Christianity and Christ are written on their identity cards, but they do not receive the light within the Church. They receive it outside the Church and then leave to eat their Easter soup. Satan can get all such people into his hands and do them great harm, if there are wicked people around them who join forces with the evil one, the ancient evil one, Satan. Out of envy, jealousy, malice, or whatever else, they cause all kinds of harm to married couples, families, and newlyweds. Magic, then, does exist. And its bonds can be broken!
They can certainly be broken through the Church—certainly—but this requires some effort, and people are unwilling to make that effort. They prefer to go to a sorceress, pay her a little money, and be set free. But the sorceress may free the body while binding the soul. That is the issue. Satan is skillful and cunning. “Gladly,” he says, “I will make your body well, provided that you sign your soul over to me.” Therefore, never resort to a sorcerer or sorceress to break a spell. Go to the Church, which sets both body and soul free. As I said, it is easy to go elsewhere and in some fashion manage
to have the child, the daughter, or the married couple set free from Satan’s malice, because he withdraws. He does the same with people who have no authority from the Church but claim to remove the evil eye. They remove the evil eye from someone, but they cast an evil eye upon their own soul. What does Satan do? You go to such a woman, and she begins using holy objects and formulas; then Satan withdraws. At once you say, “Thank you, Mrs. Katina, thank you.” Go and see to the child yourself. Go to the Church and have the priest read the proper prayers. “But the priest is not there. Where can I find him at night?” Take a little oil from your vigil lamp. Take some blessed candles from the Most Holy Theotokos, which you should keep in your home as weapons against the devil.
Take the holy water—the Agiasmos—that you keep by your icons, sprinkle the child with it, and make the sign of the Cross over the child. The child will become well, and Satan will flee. There is no need to resort to magic in order to break the evil eye. Satan gains all these victories through human ignorance, of course. I do not want to believe that someone who knew exactly how Satan traps people in such circumstances would act in this way. No. The Church has prayers against the evil eye precisely for this reason. She acknowledges its reality. The devil causes the harm; then he withdraws from the body, seizes the soul, and leaves the body alone. The same thing happens with magic. And woe to those who are malicious enough to join forces with the devil and bind another person, even if that person was spiritually unarmed. Woe to the guilty person
if he does not repent. Even if he were to save the whole world, it would not be enough. And this requires no ordinary metanoia, but repentance “in dust and ashes,” as the Old Testament says—in dust and ashes. It is a great sin for someone to practice magic, to resort to a sorceress, to resort to the devil against a human being whom God sacrificed Himself to rescue from the devil. Yet another person binds him—binding a married couple, a young woman, a young man, animals, and so forth. Yes, Satan is free to exercise these powers, and he repeatedly does so against people who have no living, organic relationship with Christ and do not possess the power of Christ. That is precisely why we see the results we do. In Athens, in the capital itself, a large proportion of people are affected.
They are in this condition. Black magic is active and flourishing in Athens, especially in the outlying districts. So if you wish to escape the malice of the world and of Satan, make sure that you have a close relationship with Christ. Be people of the Church, people of metanoia, of confession, and of Holy Communion. Satan cannot harm a person who is in communion with Christ. For more information and details, read the life of Saint Cyprian. There you will see what magic is, what the devil does, how insidious magic is, and how a person can escape it. So yes, sir or madam—I do not know who asked the question—it does exist. Now I have another question before me.
Someone writes—I do not know whether it is a man or a woman: “I have nothing to do with the Church and the so-called Mysteries of the priests, fasting, and such things. I only try to live in agreement with my conscience. In other words, as long as my conscience is at peace, none of those other things concern me. I try not to harm anyone. I mind my own business and do as much good as I can. What use do I have for certain people who go to Church but are not decent human beings at all?” At first glance, the question seems reasonable, but its foundation is unsound. What is written here has no basis. The way of human salvation is not determined by
conscience, but by the Gospel. This is where we become confused. If you were going to be judged by your conscience, that would be another matter. But I know that we will not be judged by our conscience; we will be judged by the Gospel. I would also like to ask you: Do you have a conscience? The natural answer is, “What do you mean? Am I without a conscience?” No, that is not what I mean. You will answer that you do have a conscience. Then allow me to ask a second question: Is your conscience functioning? I too have a pancreas, but my pancreas does not function; I am diabetic. It does not produce insulin. I have a pancreas just as you do, but yours secretes insulin and keeps your blood sugar from rising. I too have a pancreas.
But it does not function. Just as my pancreas does not function and I need fasting, insulin, injections, and other forms of help, so many of us have a conscience, but often it does not function. The conscience can become so hardened that it can no longer detect these inner signals. Conscience by itself does not save. If it is healthy, however, it works and tells you that you must become a Christian in order to be saved. You possess this faculty, but often your conscience is not functioning. You know how many answers we give our conscience when it cries out and reproves us.
We immediately find an excuse. When a mother’s conscience cries out, “Bear children,” she answers it, “Are these times in which to have children?” When it cries out, “It is Wednesday, yet your table is spread like Easter,” she replies, “You should see what the priests eat, while we eat nothing”—another answer to the conscience. What is she really saying? “Be quiet!” She sounds the order for silence. You women may not know this, but we men knew it from the army. Every evening in the army, the bugle sounded lights-out so that we would sleep. Everyone does this to his conscience again and again, until eventually the conscience ceases to function. I will tell you an incident that shows what conscience is like and what has happened to many people in relation to what we are discussing now.
A man owned a place in the countryside, and such properties, as you know, are exposed to all kinds of dangers—to thieves and many other things. Late one night, after midnight, the proprietor closed his establishment and went there to sleep. But his dog kept barking and running around inside the fenced grounds, and it would not let him sleep. The man was tired, so he went out onto the balcony and shouted, “Be quiet!” Since its master had spoken, the dog withdrew, and the man went back to bed. But the dog soon began barking again and running to and fro. The man got up once more. “Be quiet!” he told it a second time. Again the dog withdrew. “Be quiet; the master is speaking.” Then, for a third time, the dog began barking and making a commotion. The man rose, took
his double-barreled shotgun, went out, fired at the dog, and killed it. Once he had killed the dog, it no longer barked. So he returned to bed and slept peacefully. “You have driven me out of my mind tonight,” he had said. “You will not let me sleep.” But when he went downstairs in the morning, he discovered that some scoundrels had cleaned the place out. The dog had seen strangers moving around and was barking to warn him: “Be careful; you are in danger.” The man killed the dog and slept peacefully, but awoke to find that he had been robbed. This is what happens to many of us who rely on our conscience. We will not be judged by our conscience; we will be judged by the Gospel. So the priests are not to blame, the bishops are not to blame, and the Mysteries are not to blame. God has left these things for us to use, if we wish, so that we may be saved. You do not want them?
You are free; go your way, and may it be well with you. But do not deceive yourself. Do not be deceived into trusting that, because your conscience tells you something, you are truly living according to conscience. I repeat: if people were going to be judged by conscience, then we would need no teaching or anything else. Everyone has a conscience and could simply consult it. Yet many people do consult their conscience, apparently for evil, because it does not reprove them at all. They commit the most dreadful crimes—in the home, in the marriage bed, in business, out in society, secretly, and elsewhere—and then sleep peacefully as though nothing had happened. A person’s conscience, therefore, is not a reliable measure of whether or not he will be saved.
As you know...
When we first enter into sin, our heart nearly leaps out of our chest from fear. Later, once we become accustomed to sin, it is our jaw that nearly comes loose from yawning. Conscience is not what can ultimately help or judge a person, telling him tomorrow whether to go right or left. You are mistaken, then. Make sure that you do what the Church says. Become a member of the Church and have a relationship with the Mysteries—not merely with the services, but with the Mysteries. If you are unbaptized, receive Baptism. If you have sinned after your Baptism, go to confession. Receive Holy Communion, so that you may have your ticket, the necessary conditions for entering the Kingdom of Heaven, because there is no salvation apart from this way. Let us continue. Another person writes: “We have suffered terrible setbacks, Mr. Panagopoulos. Our business has sustained heavy losses, and fines come from places we would never expect. I am very afraid that something even worse may happen.
I do not understand what this “something worse” could be. “What do you say? What do you advise us to do? We also have a child who is almost driving us mad.” I do not think this is the first person to face such things. Many people face them. But with the help of the evil one, we have become accustomed to blaming them on luck, on coincidence, or simply on the fact that such things happen in human life. These are what we will examine now. Yet nothing lies outside God’s foreknowledge or divine providence, and nothing happens that cannot benefit us. Everything has its purpose.
Indeed, when something comes upon us from a direction we never expected, remember that we should thank God for it all the more. Let me begin at the end, with the last thing this person wrote: “We also have a child who is almost driving us mad.” Some people say, “Oh, I have only one child, and I suffer so much. What would have become of me if I had more? How wisely God enlightened me not to have any others!” It is the Master Craftsman, the devil, who gives them such thoughts, so that they do not say, “If I had accepted all the children God gave me—two, three, or four—would I have these troubles now?”
He puts the thought that way, not in the way suggested by the Master Craftsman, who says:
“You brought this on yourself. What if you had more children? You have one and cannot cope. ‘I would have gone mad—what would have become of me if I had more?’ And who told you that you would have? Do you not know that you will answer for the children you would have had, even because of this one? And if you had avoided having any at all, you would still have to answer for that. God’s justice would catch up with you. Do you think you can escape? Where will you go? Where will you flee for safety? Can you arrange your life as though you were divine Providence? God loves you, but you do not love yourself. You have blood on your hands so that you may be left with nothing, and you do not know what it costs. You dispose of life so easily; you settle these matters so casually. So if I begin with the last thing he wrote—if only I could find the person who wrote this and have him before me—I would ask him: ‘Did God give you only one child, or did you permit yourself to have only one?’”
That is where we should begin the discussion, taking the issues one at a time. My dear friends, this case may be an exception. I am not God; I do not know the circumstances. The hidden things belong to the Lord, and I do not pry into them. But generally speaking, more often than not, we ourselves create these situations, and the good God permits us to experience their consequences. You know how it is: “Oh, I am in pain.” “Why are you in pain?” “My hand hurts.” “What happened to it?” “I burned it.” “You burned it? You put it in the fire and were not careful; that is why it hurts.” So there is a cause for your pain. The pain itself is not the root of the matter. You must go back and find the root cause of why you are hurting. If you had been careful, would you be in pain? You were not careful, so now you will hurt; now you must endure the consequences.
Make the sign of the Cross and pray that you do not lose your hand, that it does not have to be amputated. Make the sign of the Cross and pray that you do not lose your soul; endure the suffering here and now. Why did you bring this pain upon yourself? Through carelessness. Then there are the other things people say: “I was careful, but there was no way I could have prevented it.” Often they think it was mere chance. “Here I am suffering unjustly—what can one do? Unjust fines,” and so forth. I remember one occasion. One day I was waiting outside my house for a taxi. I was going somewhere in Athens, down toward Omonia Square. I live in Pangrati. A taxi came along. About fifteen metres farther down, a man I knew who ran the butcher’s, greengrocer’s, and grocery shop opposite my house was also waiting. His name was Antonis, and he motioned for the taxi to pick him up. I said to the driver, “If you wish, take him too.” The driver stopped and picked him up at the square, and we rode downtown together. He said to me, “Mr Panagopoulos, I have to go downtown.”
He continued, “You see, I have a court hearing—a hearing for a violation of market regulations. And let me tell you, this time it is unjust. If ever I have been taken to court unjustly, it is today.” Then he told me what had happened. Where he hung the meat, he had both a hindquarter and a forequarter. The hindquarter had one price and the forequarter another. At one point he removed the hook bearing the price tag and stuck it into the piece beside it so that he could cut some meat from the hindquarter. He went to weigh it, but meanwhile he had not removed the price tag from the hindquarter, which was no longer hanging there, and put it back in its proper place. A market inspector passed by and found two prices displayed. “Which of these two is the price?” the inspector asked, and then filed charges against him. Antonis said to me, “Was I trying to steal from him? Did he not see what had happened? Is that not unjust?”
“I am going to tell you something to console you,” I said. I could see that he was deeply troubled, so I told him this story: “I do not know whether you have ever read the account concerning Ephrem the Syrian.” If you have read that account, my dear friends, you will find the following rather extraordinary event. Once Ephrem went down to the city on some business. Before he could enter, however, the gates of Alexandria were closed, and so he remained outside the city wall. Where could the elder stay that night? We are speaking of Ephrem the Syrian, a holy man; this is no trifling matter. Outside the city lived a shepherd he knew, and Ephrem decided to go to the sheepfold of his friend.
The shepherd welcomed the elder and offered him what hospitality he could, and Ephrem spent the night there. Yet thieves came and stole many sheep and rams from that shepherd’s flock. In the morning, as you can imagine, the matter caused an uproar. The police were called—I do not know exactly how such things were handled there—and they dragged the elder away, claiming that he had staged the whole affair. They said he had deliberately gone there to keep the shepherd occupied that night while another band of his accomplices carried out the theft. So the elder, the man of God, was thrown into prison, though he had done nothing. When he entered, there were two other men inside. They saw this elderly man and asked, “How did you end up here?” “Leave it, my children,” he replied. “I am here unjustly, unjustly.” “Do you believe in God?” they asked him. “Of course I believe in God,” he said.
They began speaking bitterly to him: “There is no God, old man.” “Stop, children; do not say that. Listen to me.” “If God exists, why did He allow you to be brought here unjustly? We too have been imprisoned unjustly. We are embittered. We once believed as well, but now we do not.” The elder asked one of them, “Why do you say you are here unjustly? What are you accused of?” “I am accused of a murder I never committed,” he replied, “and this other man is also accused of a murder he never committed.” The thought that these two men also appeared to be suffering unjustly shook the elder. He thought, “Suppose I myself am convicted—but what of these other two?” So the elder resolved to remain awake in prayer. The others lay down to sleep that night, for they were accustomed to prison life. He bent his knee and said to the Lord, “I will not rise from this place.”
“Unless You tell me why I have come here and why these men are here unjustly, You must answer me.” As we say, he clung to the Lord’s feet and pressed Him insistently. After he had struggled for a long time in prayer, a tall, fair-haired man appeared and struck him on the back as he knelt. The elder turned and saw above him a man of surpassing beauty. “What are you doing here, elder?” the man asked. “I am praying, Saint of God,” he replied. “What are you praying about?” “I am asking the Lord to tell me why there is so much injustice in the world, why these men are here unjustly, and why I too am here unjustly.” “You are not here unjustly,” the man said. “Do not be scandalised.” “I am not here unjustly? Did I steal those animals?” “No,” he replied, “you did not steal them.”
“But you have some old debts,” he told him, “and now you are paying them.” “What have I done?” Ephrem asked, searching his memory. “Do you know what you are paying for through this imprisonment? When you were nine years old and playing with some other boys, a poor widow had tethered a young heifer nearby. You went and untied it. The heifer ran away, butchers caught it and slaughtered it, and that woman’s tears remain to this day and pursue you.” “But,” Ephrem replied, “I sold everything I had and gave it to the poor. Has the debt for that heifer still not been repaid?” “My good man, that heifer…” he said.
“What you gave away,” he told him, “you gave as alms. You still owe the other debt. You did not give that money in repayment; you gave it as charity. That debt remains. Do you want to hear about the other man as well? The first man was once swimming in a river with a friend. His friend slipped and fell into the current, crying out to him, ‘Run ahead and catch me farther down!’ But this man paid no attention, and his friend drowned. That too is murder, and now he is being brought to judgment for it. The other man had quarrelled with a livestock breeder in his village but could not strike him, so he took revenge by accusing the man’s daughter of immorality.”
“That young woman has remained unmarried to this day,” he told him. “In God’s sight, this is moral murder. Both men have been brought here for murder, whatever they may say about being innocent. Farewell.” The elder immediately ran over and shook their beds. “Get up! Get up!” he said. “All three of us are guilty. Did you do this or not?” he asked the first. “Were you at the river, and did you act as I have described?” Then he said to the other, “Sir, you accused that man’s daughter of immorality because you could not take revenge on him directly, since he was stronger than you. In God’s sight, that is moral murder. And I too did this thing when I was young and foolish. Kneel down,” he said, “and let us pray and offer metanoia—repentance—to God.” For the first time they came to themselves. As a result, three days later all three received a verdict of acquittal and were released. Then Mr Antonis said, “I should ask myself…”
“What about all the other things I have done in the past, when I was never caught? Do they simply count for nothing?” he said. “Pray for me, Mr Panagopoulos, that I may be tried only for today’s offence.” Do you grasp the point? I know this raises questions, but that is how matters stand. We demand justice and say, “I am in the right.” Yes, but at another time you were in the wrong, and you will have to pay for that. God is just, and He helps you settle your accounts here, as Paul says, so that you may not be found in debt there. Let us continue. The next question is this: “Mr Panagopoulos, I heard that we should not ask the saints to pray for us.” The person heard this on the radio. There is someone broadcasting here whom I do not know personally. “We should not appeal to the saints,” he says.
“We should appeal only to Christ, because if many people ask the saints at the same time—one person from here, another from there, all asking a saint or the Most Holy Theotokos at once,” he said by way of example, “how can they possibly attend to everyone?” It sounds like a logical argument: how can they be everywhere at once? And so people find themselves troubled by the question. You know, it is not only the heterodox who reject our saints, their holy relics, their intercessions, and so forth. Some of our own people also cannot grasp the matter. Such a person asks: “How many Most Holy Theotokoses are there? I cry, ‘My Most Holy Theotokos!’ from here, someone else cries, ‘My Most Holy Theotokos!’ from over there, and another does the same from somewhere else. To whom will the Most Holy Theotokos go first? After all, how many Most Holy Theotokoses are there?”
“My Saint Nicholas, whose feast we celebrate today, work your miracle! Saint Nicholas, help my child! Saint Nicholas, help my husband! Saint Nicholas, heal my stomach! Where is Saint Nicholas supposed to go?” These are not trivial questions, my dear friends. “Appeal to Christ, then,” he says. Yes, Christ is everywhere present. But can we also appeal to the saints? This is where people have difficulty. Yet we need not hesitate to appeal to the saints, even if five hundred or a thousand people call upon them at the very same hour. We can do so. This question has always concerned people. If you find a collection of questions and answers attributed to Athanasius the Great, you will see this very question posed: “How can this happen?” Do you know what the saint answered? I will give you the same answer, and I believe you will find it reasonable. Omnipresence belongs only to the Holy Trinity; it does not belong even to our Most Holy Theotokos.
Our Most Holy Theotokos exists within place and time, as do the angels, the demons, all spiritual beings, and all the saints. She is here and not there; or she is there and not here. She would have to leave me to go to someone else, and then leave that person to come to me, and so forth. Omnipresence belongs only to the Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What happens, then? While the Most Holy Theotokos is attending to one person and another person calls upon her, an angel of the Lord goes and serves in her place. Do you understand? The Lord sends an angel to act on her behalf. If you read the Life of Saint Nicholas, you will find Christ alerting Saint Nicholas, who was occupied with a shipwrecked sailor, that he must go and help certain other people. He had to hurry to the prison because others were calling upon him—men who had been unjustly condemned and were to be executed the next morning.
We see, then, that there is a centre—Christ—upon whom everyone depends. Let me give you a simple material example, so that perhaps we can move from it to the spiritual reality. Here before me I have a telephone with the number 100. Right beside it is another telephone with a different number, say 101. How can I make that other telephone ring? What do I do? I dial its number here. Do you know where the signal goes in order to activate the other telephone? It goes through the exchange. The exchange makes the connection. By dialling, I activate the exchange, and the exchange activates the other telephone so that someone can answer it. Otherwise, even if the two telephones are only a metre apart—or placed directly beside one another—nothing will happen. Everything passes through the exchange.
Christ is that centre. Everything passes through Christ. This is also why, many times, we receive no answer. However much I may try to move Saint Nicholas, if the matter reaches the Judge above and He examines each person’s record, He may say, “Stop. Nothing is to be done.” Then there is no answer at all: neither voice nor hearing. So things are not as some people describe them; they are entirely different. The Lord is the One who sends an angel to help people and who answers them as He sees fit. He still works miracles—He still works miracles. I do not know whether you grasp this, whether I have made it understandable. The Most Holy Theotokos may indeed be here, but if she is also called upon elsewhere, an angel of the Lord will go there on her behalf, fulfil her ministry, and respond as the Most Holy Theotokos would respond, according to whether the Lord approves or does not approve the request. This is the order of things; this is how it works.
This is how we should understand it, and we should never hesitate and say, “Saint Nicholas, are you free? May I call upon you? All right, I will wait. Saint Nicholas, should I first ask whether you are available?” You are appealing to your God through a saint of God, and all the saints depend upon Him. The answer will come accordingly—if God wills it, if it is right, and if it is for your benefit. That settles this question. Let us move on. I have spoken before about the next matter, and the talk is available on tape. But since someone has asked, I will say a little about it here as well, so that you may gain some understanding. “Mr Panagopoulos,” someone writes, “I do not blaspheme, but when I become angry at work or with my children at home, I often tell people to go to ‘the one outside’—the devil. Is that wrong?” As I said, I once gave an entire talk specifically about blasphemy.
I also addressed this particular case. It is something very cunningly devised by the master craftsman, the devil. And what is especially sad—forgive me, Fathers—is that even some spiritual fathers have not fully understood the matter. Among other questions in Holy Confession, they may ask, “My child, do you ever blaspheme?” They receive the answer, “No, Father, I do not blaspheme. Sometimes, when I lose my temper, I tell someone to go to ‘the one outside’”—just as this note says. “Very well, my child. Be careful; that is wrong, and you must stop doing it.” If the person had said that he blasphemed the Most Holy Theotokos, the priest might have imposed a canon—a rule of prayer—and perhaps barred him from Holy Communion for forty days or a month. If he had blasphemed Christ or the Precious Cross, the priest would have treated it seriously. But when the person says that he invokes ‘the one outside’ and curses someone by the devil, the priest imposes no canon; he merely corrects or counsels him.
Here is the truth of the matter. The person who blasphemes Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cross, the Holy Trinity, and so forth is a blasphemer: he blasphemes. But the person who sends someone else to the devil is not merely blaspheming—he is making a wish and consigning that person to the devil. He sends someone to him: his mother-in-law, his son, his wife, or her husband. He becomes an agent of the devil and sends people to him. I do not know whether you grasp the point. Such a person is not simply a blasphemer. The word “blasphemy” comes from the idea of harming someone’s good name—the good name of the Most Holy Theotokos, of Christ, and so forth.
I am not damaging the reputation of that master, that arch-craftsman. I am acting as his agent and sending people his way. I send him my workman, I send him my animal, I send him my cart—I send him everything. I am his representative; I am a devil, an agent of the devil, and I am wishing people into his hands. I am not blaspheming him. Do you grasp what I am saying or not? “I do not blaspheme Christ,” someone says. “I only mention the one outside the door.” But when you send another person to the devil, are you not blaspheming Christ? Did Christ not come to rescue man from the devil, to whom you are sending him? Were not the Cross, Great Friday, the burial, and the humiliation endured to rescue man from the devil, to whom you and I send him? Whoever blasphemes Christ blasphemes Christ, one person. Whoever blasphemes the Precious Cross blasphemes the Precious Cross.
The blasphemer who insults our Most Holy Theotokos blasphemes our Most Holy Theotokos. But whoever sends another person to the devil blasphemes the whole Holy Trinity, Great Friday, the Precious Cross, and the Most Holy Theotokos—he leaves nothing untouched. For the whole divine economy, all these persons, and everything that was brought together served to rescue man from the devil, to whom I am sending him. Thank you very much! “It is not blasphemy,” they say. “Just be careful, my child; it is a bad thing.” Do you understand what lies behind that expression? And here is the truly dreadful thing, the thing that should make a person tremble. People are frightened by what we might call the severity of God—by the Canons, by the thunderbolts. Do not be so frightened by the thunderbolts; be frightened by the silence of Christ.
I remember that when we were in Albania, I could not close my eyes unless there was fighting at the front. Unless the Italian artillery was firing, I could not sleep. I did not know where they would attack us. For me, quiet at the front meant death. We could find our bearings and make our way more easily when the artillery was firing than when it was silent. You may ask why I am telling you this. Turn to the Ten Commandments. Turn to the Ten Commandments. They say, “You shall not steal; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not bear false witness”—you shall not do this, you shall not do that. But they do not say, “You shall not blaspheme.” That should frighten you. See: God did not legislate about it. Why did He not establish a commandment?
“Would I ever expect My own child, My own creature, to blaspheme Me, so that I would need to make a law and tell him, ‘Do not blaspheme Me’? It would be a disgrace for Me even to have to say it.” A person should refrain out of honor and reverence; that is why God established no such commandment. Of course, the Fathers and the Synods later spoke about blasphemy, through the Holy Spirit. Basil the Great, for example, says, “The person who sins transgresses against the law, but the person who blasphemes sins directly against God.” This is a grave matter. When has God ever stood in your way? When has He ever made anything difficult for you, that you should drag Him down and do to Him all those things you utter with your profane mouth? The fact that He made no law, established no Canon, and issued no threat concerning this matter is worse than if He had. He never expected His own child to blaspheme Him.
“Could I make such a law for My own child? I could never do that.” So yes, my dear friends, you are wrong when you lose your temper and blaspheme, or when you send your children to the devil—those very children for whom Christ was crucified, to rescue them from the devil. Christ came to destroy the works of Satan; He came to destroy death. Have you never read that passage from Hebrews, part of which is also read at the blessing of water? “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same, that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage,” and so forth. He came to rescue man from the devil and to destroy the works of Satan.
Christ did to him all that He did, which is expressed so beautifully in the troparia of Great Saturday: Satan received Christ below as a man, but encountered God; he swallowed down earth and met Heaven. There the hymns personify Hades, Satan, the ruler below. Our Church has those beautiful troparia: “Today Hades groans and cries aloud: It would have been better for me if I had not received Him who was born of Mary. For when He came upon me, He destroyed my power; He shattered the gates of brass, and, being God, He raised up the souls whom I had held captive from the beginning.” “I cannot hold them. I will cast them out; I will vomit out those whom I have held from the beginning.” I do not know; perhaps my words are falling on deaf ears in this case. But examine this as carefully as you can and correct your speech. Ask Christ to give you the strength to sanctify your tongue. Do you want the devil as your friend, or Christ? Go with Christ, my child.
Why abandon the Lord Jesus Christ for that other one, as people call him—the one who takes the reins of the soul and causes all this harm? Blasphemy is a very serious matter, a very serious matter. Next comes another question, which has problems of its own: “Which is preferable: to fast and condemn other people? I do not fast, but neither do I condemn people, as others do.” Once they asked a camel, “Which do you prefer, going uphill or downhill?” And the camel answered quite plainly, “Is there no level ground? Must it be only downhill? Is there no level ground?”
So here you must either condemn people or fast—is that it? If you condemn people, you must not fast; and if you fast, then you may condemn people? Can you not do both—fast and refrain from condemning? Is that impossible? Must you choose one or the other? These things are absurd. And yet we present them as serious positions. Many people—in fact, very many—say: “I do not make long signs of the Cross like other people, but I also do not do this or that. I may not go to Church, but I do not do this, that, or the other thing.” Are you going to be the Pharisee, set up your own scales, and see whether the balance comes out in your favor? Will the scales then issue your ticket, sign it, and let you pass into the Kingdom of Heaven? What are these ideas people have invented? Do you understand? Do you know what the twenty-third verse of Matthew chapter twenty-three says? “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” You must do both.
You must watch your stomach, and you must restrain your tongue. You must neither condemn others nor abandon self-restraint. You must attend Church and refrain from lying. Both are required: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.”
There it is. Read chapter twenty-three, the Gospel passage for Great Tuesday, and you will see. A person must do both. Some say, “When I fast, I do not eat two bowls of bean soup, for example. I just eat a little meat, only a little.” And who told you that when you fast you may eat two bowls of bean soup? What does Holy Tradition teach you?
Is fasting the same as stuffing yourself? The very word means not eating, not merely changing one kind of food for another. Two bowls of beans, half an oka of food, and half a loaf of bread—you have taken in two and a half thousand calories, the equivalent of five steaks. This is our own homemade version of Christianity: we establish our own standard. We establish our own standard. It is grievous that, here in the fullness of the twentieth century, such confusion should exist about these matters.
These things should be perfectly clear in a person’s nous, the spiritual intellect. He should be careful; he should read, study, ask questions, and seek counsel from people able to help him. He should look for books written by discerning people about these matters of the soul. I do not know. I hope, once again, that here too my words have fallen on deaf ears because no one actually needs the warning.
I hope this was merely one question and one answer for the person who raised it, and that it does not apply more widely to us. Yet from my own limited experience, I must say that unfortunately, to some degree, this is how we are. My dear friends, let us not use the faults and weaknesses of others as our standard. When Saint Anthony the Great went into the Church, he heard only a few words: the rich young man went away sorrowful because he was very rich, and when Christ told him to sell everything and follow Him, he did not do so. Saint Anthony said to himself, “The poor fool! I will go and do it.” So he went, sold his possessions, provided for his sister, departed, and became—
—Saint Anthony the Great, Abba Anthony, the man who put the devil in a bottle, while the devil puts us in one. Saint Anthony the Great put the devil in a bottle, while the devil puts us in a bottle. What is the reality? Why? What did Saint Anthony do? “Well, I will do it.” He did not say, “What are the others doing? You know, that man on the parish committee who pretends to be religious is this and that, so I will not...” No. You should join the committee and make sure that you are not like him. You should do both one thing and the other. You should go to Church and make sure that you are not like him. You should keep your mouth closed, set right any injustice, and pursue what is right. What kind of reasoning is this? The question is not, then, “Which is preferable?” Christ did not say, “Either commit fornication or fast.”
You must fast and refrain from fornication. Both are required: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” Today, if any of you recognizes that this cap fits him, let him try it on, take his own measure, and correct these things. For I often hear people say, “I go to the racetrack; I gamble at cards—but that is my one vice.” Another says, “I only have cigarettes.” Another says, “I only have one woman,” and someone else has some other shameful vice. It seems we must have something! Why must we have something? What would happen if we had none of these things? Would it not be better to have none of them? Do you know what Satan does to us, my dear friends? He makes sure that he keeps hold of us somehow. Think of a field. Most of us come from rural areas. I myself come from Aigio, so I know something about these matters.
Suppose I have an animal, a four-legged creature, and I want to hold it so that it cannot wander away, be eaten by a wolf, or be stolen. Must I tie all four of its legs to keep it from escaping? Must I tie three legs? Must I tie two? Must I tie even one leg? If I have it by the halter, do I not still hold it? I can hobble all four legs and hold it down. I can hold it by three, by two, or by one—any of them. And if I have it tied by the halter, it is securely mine. That is what Satan is like. It is enough for him to hold you by one thing. This is what he does especially to heretics. Once he has caught them through heresy, they deny the Mysteries, they deny the Holy—
—Trinity, they deny the saints, the Most Holy Theotokos, and so forth, and he has them as tame as doves.
As tame as doves. “Since I joined them,” someone says, “I gave up women, gave up gambling, gave up this, and gave up that.” It would be better to have all those vices and not be a heretic. Satan has folded you up and put you away; he has made you a heretic, and now he displays you in the shop window for others: “Here is the Church! Here no one is scandalized; here they do none of those things.” These are the conclusions that follow from the point we have been discussing. Here is one more question, perhaps the last. I am grateful it arrived just in time, so that no one can complain that I did not wish to answer him. It says: “Someone has done me great harm, and I have not spoken to him for twenty years. Will I be condemned to Hell? I cannot tell you what he did to me. I want your advice.” If I say that you will be condemned to Hell, I will be taking the place of God, and that would not be right.
But if I tell you that you will not be condemned to Hell, I will again be lying to you, because the Lord has said, “Love your enemies.” I am very afraid to answer you when, for twenty years, you have had the audacity to go to sleep each night as the sun was setting. The Apostle Paul says, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.” Do not remain at odds with someone, he says, quarreling and resentful, until the sun goes down, because you do not know whether you will live to see the morning. For twenty years—three hundred and sixty-five days each year, roughly seven thousand three hundred times—God has permitted you to die and rise again in sleep, and He is still waiting for you. For He does not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live.
“But there is no ‘but’! I cannot do it.” Christ never asked whether you could. Christ asks the sinner, asks every human being, whether he wants to—not whether he can. Man can never do it by himself. Man’s saw is only a wood saw; it cannot cut anything else—it cannot even cut water. Whatever good a person does comes from Christ. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” Look at an elevator going up. The other day it carried us 347 meters up a tower near here. What was it carrying as it rose—flies? Electricity gives us light, gives us heat, lights our way, and cooks our food. Electricity accomplishes all these things.
Does the hotplate do it? The appliance does not do it; the pot does not do it. Electricity does it. The fuse blows—it cost what, a mere penny?—and everything is dead. That is how it is with Christ. Christ does not ask a person whether he is able. The other day I spoke to you about what the Lord said to Jerusalem. He said, “You were not willing,” not, “You were not able.” And again, in that passage I mentioned to you, John 5:39, He says: “Search the Scriptures, for you think that in them you have eternal life,” and, “You are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.” He did not say, “You are unable to come to Me.” He said, “You are not willing to come to Me, that you may have eternal life.” I have explained this to you many times, in the thirteen talks we have had—fifteen, counting the morning talks. We do not want Christ, because He will tear down our unlawful bed.
He will overturn our comfortable arrangements; He will fill our home with children and bring us responsibilities. He will call our impulsive ways to account—our clothing, our worldly life, our ego, our flesh. That is why we do not want Christ. It is not that we cannot. “I cannot” is no excuse. You tell me, my child, that you cannot, so that I may help you. I warn you of death, I warn you of Hell, I warn you of Tartarus; and do you not think you ought to come and discuss the matter with me and say, “My Lord, You have written this and that here, but I cannot do these things by my own strength”? Then I would ask you, “But do you want to, my child?” Some time ago I was speaking with a woman. She had left her husband and children in a terrible way and was living with a truck driver. She said to me, “I cannot, Mr. Panagopoulos.” I replied, “Do you want to? Tell me that. I am not asking whether you can.”
The question is: what do you want? Do you want this sinful bed to be torn down, so that you may return to the honorable bed of your husband and to the three little children you abandoned? Do you want that? She did not answer me. Seven years passed before she finally answered, “I do.” And then Christ had mercy on her in a single night, that very night when she prayed and said: “My Christ, for seven years Panagopoulos has been asking me whether I want to, and I have never answered him. Tonight I tell You: I do.” In the morning she gathered her things and returned home, after eleven years of living unlawfully. We do not want to. But the moment you truly want to, there He is. Did He ever say, “I came down from Heaven so that I would not help you”? Many people may not understand this, but many simply do not want it. That is precisely why the latest fashionable saying has appeared, at least in our country: “Do not tell me; do not tell me.” A person does not want to hear it. He does not want to face the truth or enter into dialogue with the truth.
Christ asks the person: “My child, I know that you cannot. But do you want Me to help you? Do you want Me to change you?” Among the companions whom God allowed me to journey with during the more than thirty years of this small ministry, there were a ship’s engineer and a colonel. They smoked in secret because they were ashamed before me. I did not know they smoked. But circumstances unfolded in such a way that I caught them in the act. We came face-to-face, and I saw the colonel standing there, hiding something in his hand. He began to weep. There on Isadiou Street, he became flustered and said to me, “Mitsos, my dear Mitsos...”
“I am ashamed,” he told me. “I have known you for twelve years, and all this time I have been smoking in secret. I am ashamed to face you.” I said, “My dear Vasilis, it is a passion. I used to smoke too. I had a pipe and a cigar pipe, strong tobacco and mild tobacco, tsebei tobacco, fragrant tobacco, and cigars. I had them all. Christ took it away from me. I do not reproach you for smoking. I reproach you for something else. Have you ever prayed and asked for help? Why have you reached the point of saying, ‘I cannot give it up’? Have you ever asked our Christ to take it away from you? You cannot do it yourself—but have you asked Him? No, you have not. Then show that you truly want it.” It was the eve—no, not the feast itself, but the eve of the Prophet Elijah. “Tonight,” I told him, “we have Vespers for the Prophet Elijah. Go to the Prophet Elijah and light a candle. He brought fire down from heaven three, four, five times.”
“Say to him, ‘You who brought fire down from heaven, take this fire away from me.’” And the very next day he gave up cigarettes. He was disgusted by them. He had to travel to Piraeus, and from that day onward he would not enter the railway carriage where people smoked. He went into the other one, the carriage marked, “No smoking. Smoking is not allowed here.” How could such a change happen!

Συνεχεία των χθεσινών λεχθέντων, θα μου επιτρέπετε να προσθέσω και τα εξής, που είναι ερωτήσεις, απορίες, ενστάσεις, όπως τα λέγαμε, που χρήζουν κατά κάποιον τρόπο απαντήσεως και διαφωτίσεως. Στη συνέχεια αυτών βρίσκω την εξής ερώτηση. Προφανώς είναι αυτή που λέγει: «Κύριε Παναγόπουλε, υπάρχουν μάγια και πώς μπορεί κανείς να τα αποφύγει, εφόσον υπάρχουν κάποιοι άνθρωποι και κάνουν μάγια, και πώς λύονται;» Είναι κι αυτό εύλογος ερώτηση και θεώρησα να μην την παραθεωρήσω. Θα έχετε ακούσει και σήμερα, γίνεται λόγος. Πολλοί βέβαια δεν τα πιστεύουν. Το λένε αυτό: «Εγώ δεν πιστεύω στα μάγια». Όταν δεν πιστεύεις στον εχθρό, κάποτε θα σε παγιδεύσει ο εχθρός. Καλό είναι να πιστεύεις στον εχθρό. Για να λες ότι δεν πιστεύεις στα μάγια, πάει να πει ότι δεν πιστεύεις στην Εκκλησία. Έχεις δικιά σου εκκλησία εσύ; Γνωρίζεις ότι η Εκκλησία έχει εξορκισμούς για τα μάγια; Το ξέρεις αυτό το πράγμα; Έχεις διαβάσει ποτέ σου τον Άγιο Κυπριανό, τον καθηγητή της μαγείας; Έχεις διαβάσει τους εξορκισμούς του Μεγάλου Βασιλείου και του θείου Χρυσοστόμου, που γι' αυτούς δεν μπορούμε να κατηγορήσουμε τους σημερινούς παπάδες, που κατηγορούμε ότι έχουν λόγους να μαζεύουν λεφτά;
το δίκανο, πάει, του ρίχνει μια φωτιά και σκοτώνει τον σκύλο. Όταν σκότωσε τον σκύλο, δεν γάβγιζε ο σκύλος. Πλέον πήγε και ξάπλωσε και κοιμήθηκε εν ησυχία. «Με έσκασες», του λέει, «απόψε, δεν μ' αφήνεις να κοιμηθώ». Κατεβαίνει το πρωί κάτω όμως. Τον είχαν ξαφρίσει άλλοι κατεργαραίοι από κάτω. Ο σκύλος έβλεπε γύρω γύρω ανθρώπους, αγνώστους, ξένους, γάβγιζε και τον ειδοποιούσε: «Πρόσεχε, κινδυνεύεις». Αυτός σκότωσε τον σκύλο και έτσι κοιμήθηκε ήσυχα, αλλά βρέθηκε κλεμμένος. Αυτό παθαίνουμε πολλοί που στηριζόμαστε στη συνείδηση. Διότι δεν πρόκειται να κριθούμε με τη συνείδηση, πρόκειται να κριθούμε με το Ευαγγέλιο. Λοιπόν, δεν σου φταίνε οι παπάδες, δεν σου φταίνε οι δεσποτάδες, δεν σου φταίνε τα μυστήρια. Αυτά έχει αφήσει ο Θεός, εάν θέλουμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε, για να σωθούμε. Δεν θέλεις;
Ενθυμούμαι, όταν ήμασταν στην Αλβανία, δεν έκλεινε το μάτι μου εφόσον δεν εκτύπαγε το μέτωπο. Εφόσον δεν εκτυπούσε το πυροβολικό το ιταλικό, το μάτι μου δεν έκλεινε. Δεν ήξερα πού θα μας επιτεθούν. Η ησυχία του μετώπου για μένα ήταν θάνατος. Προσανατολιζόμουνα καλύτερα και περνάγαμε όταν μας χτυπούσε το πυροβολικό παρά όταν δεν χτυπούσε το πυροβολικό. Θα μου πείτε γιατί το λέγω αυτό. Πηγαίνετε στον Δεκάλογο. Πηγαίνετε στον Δεκάλογο. Και λέει: «Οὐ κλέψεις, οὐ μοιχεύσεις, οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις», ου, ου, ου, ου. «Οὐ βλασφημήσεις» δεν λέει. Αυτό να σε φοβίσει. Να, δεν έχει νομοθετήσει. Γιατί δεν έφτιαξε;
Εγώ. Το κεφάλαιο το 23 της Μεγάλης Τρίτης, διαβάστε το εκεί πέρα να δείτε. Και τα δύο θα τα κάνει. Λένε ορισμένοι: «Εγώ δεν τρώω δυο πιάτα φασολάδα, παραδείγματος χάριν, όταν νηστεύω. Τρώω λίγο κρεατάκι, τρώω λίγο». Και ποιος σου είπε ότι μπορείς να φας, όταν νηστεύεις, δυο πιάτα φασολάδα; Τι σου είπε η Θεία Παράδοση;
Πώς!
