Summary
The lecturer answers the claim that Christians should wait until age thirty for baptism, explaining that Christ’s baptism by John was a baptism of repentance, whereas Christian baptism unites the believer with Christ’s death and resurrection. Early Christian witnesses including Hermas, Barnabas, Theophilus of Antioch, Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus, Gregory the Theologian, and the Council of Carthage are cited in support of baptismal regeneration and infant baptism. Responding to objections against calling Mary Panagia, the lecturer affirms the holiness of the Theotokos and argues that Scripture itself points beyond a Scripture-only approach to the apostolic Tradition preserved by the Church.

During these days that I have been with you, many brothers and several ladies have raised certain questions—some as objections to what we have said, and others simply as questions or difficulties, as we might call them. I answered some immediately, but others I did not answer, even though they were submitted in writing. My thought—as I usually do—was to gather them together and devote an evening to answering them; tomorrow evening will be one such occasion. I trust, however, that some of the questions have already been answered in the course of these talks, because the subjects happened to...
The talks themselves were such that they provided an answer to some of those questions. I have copied the others out clearly here, as best I could. You will now hear them, and a brief answer will be given to each. But I want to tell you beforehand that, whatever subject may be raised, you should not think it has been dealt with exhaustively. Matters of faith are immense. I have simply offered a few indications of how the Orthodox Church approaches everything that concerns the salvation of the human person.
The first item I have noted here comes from a written question. It says: “I heard someone on the radio say that a person must reach the age of thirty before being baptized. Is that true? He also said that we should not confess to human beings, but directly to God. What do you say?” As you yourselves know, we answered the second part concerning Holy Confession when we gave three talks on metanoia—repentance—and confession: how the matter is understood from the Orthodox standpoint and how it is presented by heterodox Christians. The question that remains now is...
The first part: the claim that a person must be thirty years old before being baptized. Obviously, the age of thirty is taken from the Baptism of Christ. This opinion is even found among some of us who are called Orthodox, although the idea itself is heterodox, not Orthodox. The Orthodox Church practices infant Baptism. This does not mean that she refuses to baptize adults, but, as you know, she begins with infant Baptism. This view is probably Protestant, or perhaps Jehovah’s Witness teaching; I do not know which of the two it is. What I do know is that we ourselves must have a correct understanding of the subject.
The Baptism of Christ is not the same as our Baptism. Christ received a baptism of repentance; ours is called Baptism unto salvation. This must be made clear in people’s minds, especially in the minds of parents who do not have their children baptized soon after birth. Have you ever considered the custom observed during the service of Baptism, that the mother is not present? Why should the woman who gave birth to the child not have the right to attend her child’s Baptism? Because children were always baptized before the first forty days had passed, while the mother was still regarded as ritually unclean. This fact alone is enough to give us the answer. A child may be baptized at once, because, as you know, there is no...
Guarantee that it will live. It may choke; an exhausted mother might roll over onto it and suffocate it; there may be a fire, or any number of other things. I certainly do not wish harm upon anyone. We are simply considering what can happen in human life, and a person must be made secure. Although an infant has committed no personal sins, it remains under the dominion and burden of ancestral sin and therefore needs to be cleansed.
Orthodox Christians often do not know this and become confused. We see their children remaining unbaptized at one, two, or three years old. In Cholargos, in fact, we knew a sixteen-year-old girl who was unbaptized and yet would go up to receive Holy Communion. On Great Thursday she would stand in line and receive with everyone else. They still called her “Beba”—“the baby”—and were waiting for her to marry so that she could be baptized together with her husband. This is ignorance. I do not know the reason; perhaps they too have been influenced by the teachings we hear. This slogan that a person must reach the age of thirty has even been heard on the radio. I repeat: Christ was baptized with John’s baptism of repentance. That baptism corresponds to our repentance and confession. We are not baptized with the Baptism Christ received; we are baptized into Christ’s death. We have been planted together with Him in the likeness of the death of Jesus. We enact the type of Christ’s three-day burial: we are buried, we die, and we rise again. This has nothing to do with John’s baptism. Moreover, the texts themselves show that John’s was a baptism accompanied by confession. If we open Mark and Matthew, we find that the people came and confessed their sins.
John evidently kept them in the water while they confessed their sins. But of Christ it is said that, after His divine exchange with John, when John finally consented to baptize Him, Christ entered the water and then “immediately came up from the water.” What does this mean? He had nothing to confess. He fulfilled the type and came up from the water at once. So let us not confuse the matter. Yet even this is not the principal point. The foundations of infant Baptism—and of our Baptism generally—lie elsewhere: in the command, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,” and in Mark’s words, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” There is nothing here that excludes infants. Was He supposed to say, “Go and preach to infants”? Infants could not understand. The Apostles preached to adults because there were no Christians before them.
Afterward, those who became Christians would naturally see to the Baptism of their children. Scripture speaks of adults who believed and were baptized, they and their households. You know this; have you ever read the Acts of the Apostles and noticed what is written there? It happened in three cases. At Philippi, the household of Lydia was baptized; the household of Stephanas was also baptized, and so was the household of the jailer, who was likewise in Philippi. Did none of those households contain young children? When Scripture says that the households were baptized, it means the people who lived in them. It certainly does not mean that their doors, walls, and balconies were painted!
It does not say, “Baptize the adults in the household,” but the entire household—Lydia’s whole household and the jailer’s whole household. Who can assure us that there were no small children among them? Besides, does a child not bear ancestral sin? Does it have no need of Baptism? What happened to young children under the old covenant? How did the child become a friend of God? Through circumcision. Did not Christ Himself receive circumcision when He was eight days old? Did He not receive His name at eight days old? You know that within the service of Baptism there is a short service called the Naming. The Church’s sequence of prayers for a child who comes into the world begins from the hour of birth.
The priest should be called immediately, and the appointed prayers of the Church are read for the mother. On the eighth day, the godparent brings the child—because the mother is still ritually unclean—and they come to the Church, where the child is given its name. There is a short service called the Naming. It is held on the eighth day because Christ was circumcised and received His name on the eighth day. Then, as soon as possible—and at the very latest when the forty days are completed, though preferably before then—the child must be baptized. The mother may consequently miss the beautiful service of her own child, but the child must be baptized at once so as to be united with Christ. Before Baptism it is under the influence of Satan; afterward it becomes receptive to sanctification.
As soon as the child is baptized, the priest immediately opens the tabernacle and gives it Holy Communion, thereby uniting it with Christ. If that child later departs this world, it is numbered among the righteous, among the saints, among those who have attained theosis. Let me also take this opportunity to tell you: if you have baptized children who died in infancy, write down their names. The same applies if they did not receive the complete Baptism of water and the Spirit in the font, but received an emergency Baptism by sprinkling.
This is a Baptism of necessity, by economy, as it is often called. What happens in such a case? You should write their names on your commemoration lists. They need communion with Christ through the Holy Eucharist. Do not say, “They are little and have no personal sins.” They too must commune; they must share in the Holy Chalice. Just as you include your departed loved ones—your parents, brothers, and sisters—include these little ones as well. They too commune and their souls are nourished by the Blood of Christ. The Divine Liturgy celebrated here is also offered for the departed. Christ is not the Christ of the living alone, but also of those who have fallen asleep. He reigns over both the dead and the living. On the holy diskos, as I told you the other day when we spoke at length about death and memorial services, the whole Church is present: both the Church militant and the Church triumphant. Christ is in the center of the holy diskos; to His right is the Most Holy Theotokos; elsewhere are the saints, and so forth. In front are placed smaller particles corresponding to the commemoration lists people submit for their loved ones, whether they bring a prosphoron, whether the names are kept in the Church’s diptychs, or whether they commemorate people who have fallen asleep and whose relatives remain at home. I say this because we do not realize how we may show mercy to our own departed and to others. When the Proskomide is being celebrated, a person should be in the Church.
One should be in the Church, and while the priest is laboring at the Proskomide, anyone outside the sanctuary may recite as many names as he wishes. Those people are included there; they are members of the body of the Church. A person who does this performs a great act of mercy. You may have no alms and no money to give, but come and show mercy spiritually in the Church at the hour of the Proskomide. In the early Church there was a small bell inside. The priest would ring it, and the faithful would call to mind everyone they wished: friends and enemies, people known and unknown, even those who had left no one behind to hold a memorial service or offer a commemoration for them. Today this custom has been preserved on the Holy Mountain. At a certain moment you hear the little bell ring, and everyone wakes to attention. All the fathers come down from their stalls, remove their monastic caps and hold them in their hands, and commemorate their parents, their friends, and anyone else they wish.
Thus, Christ is upon the holy diskos. The Theotokos is there in her particle—the portion marked with the letter theta that is cut from the prosphoron at the Prothesis. The saints are there, and before them are all the people commemorated through the love of the faithful and the kindness of the priest. The departed are there as well. Thus the whole Church is gathered there with Christ. After the consecration, when the priest takes these particles and places them in the Blood of Christ, there is no greater consolation for the human soul. We who are present will come forward directly to receive Holy Communion with fear of God. The departed commune indirectly, in this manner. Thank you.
Taking a prosphoron to the Church is not a matter of money. Giving the priest two drachmas to commemorate your departed is not a matter of money. You will understand this when you go to the other world and no one here commemorates you. Then you will understand what an Orthodox offering means, what the service of a sinful priest means, what sacrifice means, and what an offering means. You see these things every day in the Divine Liturgy. Not knowing their value is a grave mistake. I knew a very devout and faithful lady who always submitted the names of her departed loved ones. She also had a little brother named Antonis—I remember the name—but she did not include him because he had died as a small child.
In a dream, while she was giving something to all the others, he said to her, “You send me nothing.” Then she understood that she had not written that little child’s name on the commemoration list. To return to our subject: infant Baptism has existed in the Church from the very beginning, because there is no certainty that a person will live to the age of thirty. No one promises us that. What, then, of the current fashion by which people delay and children grow up unbaptized? A person may be free of personal sins, though it is hardly possible to live without sin until thirty, but what happens to ancestral sin? The Apostle Paul addresses this in the second chapter of Colossians. I do not know whether you have ever read Holy Scripture and noticed it.
He says that circumcision was replaced by Baptism—the very Baptism we receive. Listen: “Beware lest anyone carry you off through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and you have been filled in Him, who is the head of every principality and authority. In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with Him in Baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the divine uncreated energy of God...”
“...who raised Him from the dead.” Circumcision, he says, has now been replaced by Baptism. So how can I be saved if I die before the age of thirty? There is no other way for a person to be saved: he must enter the water and be buried, as Christ told that chosen man Nicodemus. The teaching that human salvation comes through water and the Spirit belongs to the Tradition of our Church. Today, after a hundred generations, children come to teach their grandmother—the mother who raised them—the Orthodox faith, telling her that she was wrong. Protestantism, as you know, appeared only fifteen hundred years later. If we count five generations in every hundred years, since each generation is about twenty years—and today even less—we arrive at...
Seventy-five generations. Seventy-five generations had passed during which the Church baptized infants—the great-grandmother, the mother, and the grandmother preserving Orthodoxy. And now the descendants come, not merely the grandchildren but these latest misguided children, and claim that the Church was wrong: “No, it is not so; infants should not be baptized.” This is a very serious error. It is not right for grandchildren to try to teach their grandparents the faith. I shall present witnesses from the Apostolic Fathers, so that you may see what they say about the necessity of Baptism for salvation. They wrote in those early days, before there were competing currents, advertisements, sophistries, or anything of the kind. They simply set forth things as they were. For example, there is an Apostolic Father by the name of Hermas.
I do not know whether you ever read patrology, but you will find him in the first volume, right at the beginning. In the sixth section he says: “Before a person receives the name of the Son of God, he is condemned to death.” Before he receives a name from God—that is, the name of the Saint that we receive at our Baptism—he is condemned to death; he is subject to death. “But when he receives that seal of water, he is delivered from death and handed over to life.” And what is that seal? It is the water. People descend into it subject to death, but they rise bearing the imprint of life, life sealed upon them. Therefore, that seal has been appointed for those who are to be baptized, so that we may enter the Kingdom of God.
It is now the seal of the Holy Spirit: we have been buried and raised, and we are counted worthy to enter the Kingdom of God. His contemporary, the apostolic Father Barnabas, likewise says the following about Baptism and the cleansing of sins: “And there was a river flowing from the right,” and beautiful trees grew up from it; and he saw beautiful trees coming forth from that river, “and whoever eats of them shall live forever.” This means, he says, that we descend into the water full of sins and defilement, burdened with sins and impurity, and we rise bearing fruit in the heart: the fear of God and hope in Jesus, which we possess in the Spirit. “And whoever eats of these shall live forever.”
This is what the Psalmist means: blessed are those who are called and who, having believed, enter the water. Theophilus of Antioch, another ancient Father of the Church, untouched by later heresies and sophistries, says that the things made from the waters were blessed by God. They were blessed within the water so that this might be a sign that, through water and the washing of regeneration, human beings would receive metanoia—repentance—and the forgiveness of sins. Protestantism does not signify rebirth, but here he speaks of regeneration: a new person is born again of water and the Spirit, just as Christ told that good man Nicodemus, as we read in the third chapter of John.
He said to him, “You must be born of water and the Spirit.” Nicodemus understood this literally and asked whether everyone had to enter his mother’s womb a second time. “Can I,” the elderly man asked, “enter again and be born?” Christ was not speaking of such a thing, but of birth from water and the Spirit. The baptismal font, as I have told you before, is not merely a matter of becoming godparents. It is the Mystery. If the child is lost without it, you will grieve. If the person is grown, the priest reads the catechetical prayers, he renounces Satan, confesses Christ with joy, and that is how it is done. Clement of Alexandria, an early Father, says the same thing. Clement of Alexandria has some beautiful words: “When we are baptized, we are illuminated. When we are illuminated, we are adopted as sons. When we are adopted, we are perfected. When we are perfected, we are made immortal.” “I have said, ‘You are gods and all of you sons of the Most High.’” Yet even today there are people who refuse to believe this.
They rely on human reasoning, as I told you earlier. Now, concerning the words, “Go, make disciples of all nations,” and, “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved,” some people fixate on these passages. But I have already explained that circumcision was replaced by our Baptism, and I have spoken to you about this. Saint Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons—listen to what he says: “Jesus Christ came to save all human beings, all who through Him are born again unto God: infants, children, young people, and the elderly.”
Whom, then, should I heed: Luther, who appeared in the sixteenth century, or Irenaeus? Irenaeus, writing around AD 185, says: “The Church received from the Apostles the tradition of baptizing infants as well.” Infants are baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Of course, they are cleansed from the defilement that belongs to our birth. My child, you are innocent of personal sins; that is not where the fault lies. The infant has committed no conscious sins, but it bears ancestral sin and needs to be grafted anew. What did I tell you one evening? We plant an olive seed, but a wild olive grows, and it needs grafting. We plant an orange seed, but a bitter orange grows, and it too needs grafting. In the same way, human seed needs this transformation. Saint Gregory the Theologian, advancing the same teaching in the fourth century, says:
“Make use of the right time.” Night or day, morning or evening—you may depart at any moment. Because there is danger that you may depart, that you may leave this world, seize the opportunity. Receive holy Baptism while still an infant, and let the Spirit consecrate you from your earliest years. These are the testimonies I have found, and this is how I would answer the brother who sent me this note. I would also like to tell you that the Fathers of the Council of Carthage, in Canon 121,
speak about infant baptism and say that anyone who refuses to baptize small children is to be deposed.
A clergyman may say, for example, “The little child has done nothing; leave it alone.” But anyone who refuses to accept infant Baptism is to be deposed—not because infants have committed deliberate sins, of course, but because of ancestral sin. “It has pleased the Council,” the Canon says, “that whoever denies that infants and newborn children from their mothers’ wombs are to be baptized, or says that although they are baptized for the forgiveness of sins they have inherited nothing of ancestral sin that needs cleansing in the washing of regeneration, let him be anathema.” This is Canon 121 of the Council of Carthage. Let us not, then, treat the matter lightly or rely on irresponsible claims founded on human reasoning rather than on...
the Spirit of the Church and of God. I do not have with me anything more with which to help you. I presented what I had readily at hand, since I had anticipated that such a question might arise among you. I draw this conclusion, and I do not know whether you draw it as well: a person should, if possible, be baptized from the very day of birth, so as to be united with Christ and to receive sanctification and communion with Him. Now, regarding the second part of this person’s note—that the same speaker on the radio also said that people...
should not confess to other people but directly to God—I say, as I mentioned beforehand, that I have already explained the teaching on this subject. The Apostles do not write to the unbaptized urging Confession, but Baptism; we have already discussed that. Holy Confession is for those who have been baptized, not for those who are preparing for Baptism. Those people needed Baptism, and so the Apostles urged them to be baptized. Baptism does not merely cover sins; it cleanses every sin. You do not first confess in order to be baptized. You believe in Christ and in the Cross, and you are baptized. Whatever sins you commit afterward are the sins you confess. Through Confession you will be reconciled with the Church. So much, then, for...
this first question. Another question in my notes reads as follows: “How can we call the mother of Jesus ‘Saint,’ and indeed the Most Holy Theotokos, when we know that only God is holy?” This is not merely a question raised by heterodox people, although it plainly comes from those who reject our Most Holy Theotokos. They are scandalized by the word “Saint,” and especially by “All-Holy,” because we speak in the superlative. We do not stop at “holy”; we say “All-Holy.” We do not merely say “Saint”; we call her the Most Holy Theotokos. We do not simply call her queen, but the queen of all; we do not simply call her immaculate, but wholly immaculate, as though we were ascribing to her every virtue of holiness. They are shaken whenever they hear such words about our Most Holy Theotokos. Remember the talks we gave in this series, how much we said about her, and how we justified all the beautiful things the Orthodox Church teaches about her. And I would tell you that these are nothing compared with what ought still to be said of this person, who stands immediately after God. But can we ourselves be called saints? How can we be called saints, my brethren? Is it not a command: “Become holy, as my Father in Heaven is holy”?
We can be called saints, yet the Most Holy Theotokos cannot be called Saint? What is it that scandalizes you? But this is nothing compared with what I am about to tell you. Their answer is, “Holy Scripture does not say it.” “Holy Scripture does not say it.” And they reject anything Holy Scripture does not mention, as though Holy Scripture contained everything. Yet I do not know whether you realize that Holy Scripture does not contain everything. John says that there are many other things Christ said, taught, and did, and that if each one were written down, the whole world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Does their book not say this? It is written at the very end of the Gospel of John, in chapter twenty-one. Furthermore, Christ remained on earth for forty days.
He spoke to His disciples about the Kingdom of Heaven. Where are those teachings written? He taught them for forty days; where has all of that been recorded? Furthermore, at the end of the Epistle to the Colossians, Paul says: “Have this epistle read in the Church of the Laodiceans, and you yourselves read the epistle from the Church of the Laodiceans.” Where is the Epistle to the Laodiceans? What subjects did Paul address in it? What did that epistle contain? Gentlemen—Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or whoever you may be—how can you claim that everything is written here? Not everything has been written down. It is not all contained within these pages. Only certain things Christ did are written here, and they are sufficient if a person is willing to accept salvation: what He preached and what we must do—to be baptized, to receive His Body in Holy Communion, and, if we sin, to confess our sins, and so forth.
Certain essential matters are presented briefly, and they are sufficient. But consider this as well. When Peter wishes to remind his own people, and more generally all those to whom his Catholic Epistles are addressed, he writes in his Second Epistle, in the first chapter—I shall read from verse sixteen onward: “For we did not follow cunningly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord.” What we are telling you, he says, is not a collection of myths. We did not merely hear these things secondhand through tradition; rather, “we became eyewitnesses of His majesty.” We experienced these things firsthand. And he gives the Transfiguration as an example.
“For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when such a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory: ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’ And we ourselves heard this voice borne from Heaven.” I was there, Peter is saying. For Peter was the one who said to the Lord, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. Let us remain here on Mount Tabor and make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Before he could finish speaking, a voice came from the cloud and said, as it were: “Peter, pay attention. This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him.” In other words, never mind making tents so that He may stay here for the winter or spend the summer. He came to die. Woe to you if He does not die, Peter! Christ had already told him this before.
“Get behind Me, Satan.” Yet for a second time Peter put his own desire first. Perhaps he did not want the Lord to go back down and be killed by the others, if he foresaw what was coming. So he said, “It is better for us to remain here; let us settle here on the mountain.” Then he heard the voice say, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And Peter continues: “We heard this voice borne from Heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.” Pay attention: “on the holy mountain.” Mount Tabor, even its soil, is called a holy mountain. Yes, it is called a holy mountain. And if the mountain upon which Christ set His feet is holy, is the Theotokos, who carried Him in her womb for nine months, not holy? The stones are holy, but His Most Holy Mother is not holy? Do you understand where these modern scribes and Pharisees are led?
These are the things they say against our Most Holy Theotokos. I pray that no serious person will take them to heart, and that a way may be found to enlighten those who say them. But they are unwilling; in their obstinacy they have shut the door. Why and how they have put this seal upon themselves, I do not know. Perhaps it is sheer pride; I do not wish to say anything more. Yet may they be counted worthy to see the truth. As for us, let us not be carried away by such claims. Next there is another question that is not expressed very clearly. I spoke about this the day before yesterday, but allow me to answer it again for clarification, as far as I can: “Should we under no circumstances avoid the clergy, Mr. Panagopoulos?” This question clearly arises from what we discussed the other day about the clergy...
and about the place we should give within ourselves to the bishop or priest, even if he is sinful, and so forth. That seems to be the origin of this question: “Does he always possess grace?” The standard answer—the same answer every time—is this: he does not always possess grace personally, but he always transmits grace. An Orthodox priest has no grace of his own; rather, the Holy Spirit works through him, and through him grace is bestowed. I explained this to you plainly: it is not the priest himself who baptizes; it is not he himself who hears Holy Confession and grants forgiveness; it is not he himself who gives Holy Communion or blesses. It is the Holy Spirit—it is Christ—working through him.
Others say, “I hear your confession; I forgive you.” But the Orthodox priest says, “You, O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed, and whatever you bind shall be bound,’ loose this servant of Yours.” Likewise, at Baptism he does not say, “I baptize you,” but, “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Yet this was Christ’s command: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Not in your own holiness. Baptize them in the Holy Spirit; you are to be the instruments. In Holy Matrimony, too, it is said, “The servant of God is crowned,” not, “I crown you.” “The servant of God, so-and-so, is crowned to the handmaid of God, so-and-so, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Consequently, the clergyman does not always possess grace personally, but he always transmits grace. Someone may ask, “Always—even when he is sinful, even when he is wicked?”
Grace continues to work through him as long as he has not been deposed by the Church, on whose behalf he teaches, performs the Mysteries, and carries out his ministry. Whatever other sin he may commit, grace does not depart. The Church must cut him off and deprive him of the grace to perform the Mysteries and the other ministries of the Church. During the years of Ottoman rule, a man exhumed his brother’s remains and found the body swollen and undecomposed. You understand what happens among the relatives in such cases, when they see the person swollen and undecomposed, with blackened flesh and so forth. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that, in such cases—
—a bishop must be called. There is a special prayer for the body to be loosed and return to the earth. Christ permits this condition to become visible when the remains are exhumed. For this reason, our Church established the custom of exhumation after three years: if the person became entangled in something during his life and placed himself in opposition to the Church, to Christ, or to the clergy, the Church can act swiftly to loose his body and return it to the earth. At the same time, she helps him as much as possible through the Holy Eucharist, memorial services, and the other prayers, until the curtain falls at the Second Coming. When this man found his brother in such a condition, he sought advice about what he could do. They told him that he must go and explain the matter to the bishop. So he went and told the bishop, who asked him whether he knew—
—if his brother had come into conflict with the previous bishop. His brother had insulted him, and it appears that the bishop had pronounced a curse upon him. I do not know the exact reason, but he had fallen under a priestly curse. So the man went to the bishop and explained what had happened. The bishop asked him, “What do you attribute this to? What do you know about your brother?” He replied, “The older people have told me that he had come into conflict with the previous bishop.” “Then that bishop must read the prayer over him,” the bishop said. “Where is he?” The man replied, “He is no longer in the Orthodox Church. That bishop became a Turk and went over to Islam.” This took place during the years of Ottoman rule.
“I have been told that he became a Muslim,” the man said. “Even if he did,” the bishop replied, “I cannot read the prayer. My prayer will not be effective in this matter; the authority belongs to him.” The man could not understand this. How could it be so, if the former bishop had abandoned the faith and become a Muslim? Nevertheless, nothing could be done. The days passed, and you can understand the shock and anguish within him. At last they told him, “Go and find that former bishop, and speak to him about the matter.” So he set out and found him. “Are you such-and-such?” he asked. “Yes, I am.” “This is what has happened to me,” the man explained. “We exhumed my brother and found his body swollen and undecomposed. I have learned from the older people that he once came into conflict with you. Please come and read a prayer over him.” The former bishop answered, “Can you not see? Are you blind? I no longer belong to that Church. What could I possibly come and do?”
The man returned to the bishop, but the bishop told him, “There is nothing I can do while that man is still alive. I must wait for him to die, and then I will read the prayer for you.” The troubled man could not stop thinking about it, so he went back and began pleading with the former bishop: “Show some love; please come and help us somehow.” At last the man yielded and said, “Go secretly—and be careful, for my life is at stake. Find an epitrachelion, and come to the cemetery late at night. I will find some way to meet you there, and we shall see what happens.” The man found an epitrachelion somewhere and went to the cemetery at the appointed time. The bishop who had become a Muslim put on the epitrachelion and read the prayer over the remains. When he finished the reading—for the remains of the departed submit, if possible, before the bishop—
—because the bishop is a living icon of Christ. We may belittle him and value him at nothing, but the bishop remains a living icon of Christ. In any event, when he finished the prayer, nothing remained but earth and bones. When the bishop who had become a Muslim saw this, he turned to offer a prayer of his own and said, “My Christ, do You still endure me?” This became the cause of his return to Christianity and of his confession of the faith unto martyrdom. There is no other reason for grace to cease acting through a bishop or a priest, except when the Church herself—the Church that gave him the authority to perform the Mysteries and the other ministries—cuts him off and takes that authority away. That is why she declares him deposed: deposed.
The Church is saying, “I gave you this authority, and by virtue of it you perform the Mysteries and the other ministries; now I take it away from you.” That is all. Let us move on. This is the one matter a person must examine. Apart from this, whether the priest is corrupt, sinful, self-interested, or stubborn does not hinder grace. What must you examine in such a case? Whether he remains in communion with the Church. Has he been cut off? Has he been deposed? Some people give an easy answer here which, in perhaps one or two percent of cases, may have some appearance of truth, but generally it does not. They say, “How am I supposed to know what this man is, whether everything is in order or whether he is entangled in some ecclesiastical problem?”
Allow me to answer simply. If you intend to buy even a small plot of land, you hire a lawyer to investigate whether it is legally entangled or free and clear, whether the title is clean, and so forth. You have the lawyer untangle everything so that you can buy a piece of land which will remain here in this world. If nothing about the clergyman’s condition had reached your ears, you approached him in innocence, seeing in his person a servant and representative of God. God will arrange matters so that, in time, you learn that what you did was not correct. From that point onward, you must act and find a way to put in order the matters that truly concern you. But from the moment you are informed and learn how things stand, if you persist in doing as you please, you are responsible before God. Every person, especially in matters concerning the soul, must—
—take great care. If he loses anything else, it is nothing; but if he loses his soul, that is a serious matter. Christ sees how each person understands things and what moves him—zeal, sentimentality, malice, or whatever else—and He makes allowance for him accordingly. Therefore, there is no case in which grace does not act, except when the clergyman has been cut off and deposed by the Church. The authority granted to him by the Church has then been taken away. Here before me is another question, which also appears to arise from our recent discussion about memorial services: “Are kollyva and the customs observed in the Church, Mr. Panagopoulos, merely for the financial benefit of priests—for memorial services, Trisagia, and so forth? What meaning do kollyva have?” Thank you.
These things were not instituted so that priests and bishops could collect money, as some claim. They have a purpose. Kollyva are a confession of faith concerning the Resurrection. Christ told us that unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and decays, it cannot spring up and bear abundant fruit. In the same way, we too must decay in the earth, and then we shall spring forth and rise again. By offering this wheat for the departed person, we are saying: although his body has decayed in the earth, one day he will rise, just as this wheat springs from the ground. It is a confession of faith in the Resurrection. And so we place the kollyva before the holy icons.
Indeed, the name “kollyva” was given to them by Saint Theodore the Recruit. You know that we observe a Soul Saturday associated with Saint Theodore. Besides the Soul Saturday before the Sunday on which the Gospel of the Last Judgment is read, there is another Soul Saturday during the week of Saint Theodore. During the reign of Julian the Apostate, the following took place. Julian ordered that all the food in the marketplace be defiled with blood from sacrifices offered to idols, so that the Orthodox Christians would eat it. Saint Theodore the Recruit appeared in a dream to the bishop of that place and told him, “Warn the faithful, the Christians, not to buy anything from the market tomorrow.”
“Everything there has been defiled with the blood of sacrifices offered to idols. Tell them not to buy anything, but to eat kollyva instead.” In the dream, the bishop asked Saint Theodore, “What are kollyva?” “Boiled wheat,” he replied. “That is what we call boiled wheat in Euchaita.” This is why we call it kollyva; the name was given by Saint Theodore the Recruit. There are several saints named Theodore, including Theodore the General and Theodore the Recruit, so this distinction is necessary. Now, is anyone forcing you to attend a memorial service? If you do not want to go, do not go. But do not claim that it was invented for the priest’s benefit. No priest or bishop came to your home and ordered you to hold a memorial service—
—in the most elaborate way, lighting many lamps, arranging one thing after another, and spending five or ten thousand drachmas. Take a small plate of wheat with a candle on it, bring the names of your departed and a small prosphora so that we may take out a particle for your loved one, and that is all. But then human pride enters. You want to show what an important person the departed was and how grandly you honor him. You bring elaborate kollyva and distribute them into everyone’s hands so that each person may say, “May God forgive him.” It is a way of prompting others to pray, “May God forgive him.” No one instituted this custom for financial gain, regardless of whether we have carried things to excess in our homeland, where a memorial service may cost fifty or even one hundred thousand drachmas. That is human vainglory. The priest will generally accept whatever you place in the envelope. If you put nothing in it, he receives nothing. But we—
—sometimes behave shamefully in the cemetery. If there are ten memorial services, someone pulls his own offering aside so that it will be read separately. Of course, this happens here too. I was speaking about our homeland and became carried away; perhaps you do not do it here. But I fear that the devil will come here as well, since he already has his ticket. You see all the kollyva placed together on one tray so that they will not be scattered, yet one decorated plate is kept separate. It is set apart because it has elaborate adornments, spices, mint, pomegranate seeds, and other things to make it beautiful. Therefore, it must not be mixed with the others! Be careful about this. Another question also arises. I do not remember whether it was here or in Montreal that someone asked me: when holding a memorial service for one person, may we include other names as well?
May we commemorate other departed people at a memorial service offered particularly for one person? Some imagine that if they include only one name, the prayer will be more effective—as though that person will receive the whole offering. They think that if they add two or three names, perhaps including their father who has also departed, the prayer will somehow be weakened. Do you understand how absurd this is? Let me give you an example that may sound amusing. It is as though a woman said, “Tomorrow I shall take my deceased husband outside to warm himself in the sun. No one else in the world must come outside, because my husband needs all the sunlight.” Would your husband receive less sunlight if someone else came outside? Even if every person on earth stood beneath the sun, would your husband receive less warmth? Such ideas are absurd.
How long will this devil keep making us dance to his tune? How long will we remain his victims, accepting so many foolish notions in matters of faith? We leave people’s names out—the names of those who may be enduring the scorching heat of Hell and waiting for the grace of Christ, which pursues us to the very last moment, until the Second Coming—and yet we deprive our own departed of this help. Those who concern themselves with souls, both the living and the departed, will find great mercy and compassion, especially when they care for that suffering company whom we call the departed. They have left their bodies here below. They can no longer run about and do anything for themselves; they wait for us. Some ask, “What can a memorial service do for a person who is in Hell, since he departed as a sinner?”
It can make his imprisonment more bearable. Suppose someone is in prison and you bring him two blankets. What have you done? You have made his imprisonment more bearable. He is still in prison, but instead of sleeping on the concrete floor, he sleeps on two blankets. Or you bring him a hot meal. Have you done him harm? Or perhaps you bring him a packet of cigarettes—as people say nowadays, cigarettes have become more important than bread. These are all human weaknesses. The point is that we make the imprisonment more bearable. Only the particle offered for a heretic is not accepted: an angel removes it and sets it aside. If a priest receives a slip of paper without knowing that those who wrote the name have listed a heretic—and perhaps they themselves do not know—
—the angel will remove that particle. The same applies to those who committed suicide deliberately and in full possession of themselves. They have shut the door once and for all, and no one can help them. There are, however, people who took their own lives because of illness or because they were in a state like demonic possession. They were not in control of themselves. In such cases, the Church applies economia: she buries and commemorates them and offers them help. But heretics who knowingly call white black and black white have closed the door behind themselves once and for all, and they cannot be helped. All the others can be helped. We should write their names with love and attention. Prepare two slips of paper, not one: on one, draw a cross and write the names of our departed; on the other, write the names of—
—the living: “George, Basil, children, and relatives.” With three simple words you include the whole family. Do the same for our departed. The priests also need many hours to perform this labor of love and to present before our Christ all these people who are in need.
Time does not permit me to continue, but there is one brief question here that I should answer: “I have heard that we must not kneel on Sunday. Is this true?” Yes, it is absolutely true. From Saturday evening, when the lamps are lit—that is, from the moment the priest comes out and “O Gladsome Light” is chanted—until Sunday evening, when “O Gladsome Light” is chanted again, kneeling is not permitted. There are six Canons concerning this, beginning with the First Ecumenical Council. Thank you.
Of course, we will still do as we please. But I am telling you that it carries no penalty of excommunication, because the Holy Spirit knew that people would do as they pleased; nevertheless, this is what pleased the Fathers. There are six Canons (ecclesiastical law). The question of kneeling occupied the Church from her earliest days. Around AD 150, Saint Justin Martyr and Philosopher was asked: “Why is it that you Christians, who say that prayer is offered better while kneeling, do not kneel on Sundays or during Pentecost?” And the holy martyr replied. Read question 115. That is all I had to say this evening. Tomorrow evening, God will have His own word to say.
