Summary

The commentary continues on the patristic counsel to keep the memorials of the saints, since through them communion with God is established. The exhortation "tread the church as heaven and reckon nothing fleshly or earthly in it" means the temple is no shop or committee room but the place where Christ, the Theotokos, the angels and the saints are present, and where bread, wine, vestments, words and symbols are all spiritual. The church is paradise, the harbor of souls and the inn that receives all, where angels descend the moment the priest says "Blessed is the Kingdom"; names must be given at the proskomidi rather than at the dismissal, and care for the beauty of God's house belongs to all the faithful, not only to sacristans and wardens.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to you all. Welcome, welcome. So we have been speaking about hesychia, about inner stillness, about prayer, and about tears. Now there is something else the saint sets before us, and it is very interesting. One of these counsels is this: attend to the memorials of the saints.

That is, go to the feasts of the saints. For through them, he says, communion with God is established. Through these contacts, through this relationship with the Church and with the saints, you too take part, you enter into a kind of union with God, just as we were saying.

"For through them communion with God comes about." This is how you will be able to achieve real communion with God. "Tread the church as heaven, and reckon nothing fleshly or earthly in it." Consider that everything there is above the earth, that it belongs to heaven.

So here is a passage, and he says: attend to the memorials of the saints. We ourselves have divided them into small feasts and great feasts. Today is a small feast, we say, and that other one was a great feast. But if a person could be in church every single day...

We, whenever we look at the calendar, check to see whether it is a great feast. Of course the persons of the saints do differ, as Paul has said: star differs from star in glory. And indeed, one is the glory of the moon and another the glory of the sun. So there is one honour for the feast of the Honourable Forerunner tomorrow, and another honour and another feast for Saint Nicholas, or Saint George, or some other saint, or Saint Agrippina, whose feast falls today. You see, even in this spiritual theatre of God, each one has his own works.

Yet if a person could be present every single day at a liturgy for the memory of some saint, he would gain great benefit. And you should know that saints who are strangers to us, whom most of us have never heard of, are for some particular region very well known indeed. They are known through their miracles. Take, for example, Saint Nicholas of Vounena. Look how it is! Such saints work miracles. And so people come from the ends of the earth to their feast.

We do not see him, but the fact remains that every saint, once he becomes known, is known in his own region, and this creates interest in people, and a person comes and takes part. On the day each saint is commemorated, that saint, by his martyrdom and by his life, has a corresponding boldness before God. And a person is helped, because through the martyrdoms of the saints, and in general through the feast of some saint, you are given the opportunity for a liturgy to be served, and that liturgy leads you toward the Holy Communion that will follow. It is the Divine Liturgy that is the centre of everything, and through Holy Communion a person is sanctified. One kind of spiritual progress belongs to the person who...

...comes to church often, communes often, and often has the saints of God in his thoughts. And quite another grace and spiritual advancement belongs to the person who only looks out for the great feasts in order to come to church. And many stay outside the precinct, just to receive the light of the Resurrection, or to take the blessed water at Theophany, and so on. The one differs from the other. Here he says: through them communion with God comes about. In this way you communicate with God and you complete His thought within you. Because many of us go to the festivals and the feasts of the saints...

...without any fear of God. We go the way Mary of Egypt once went. Even on the boat, while she was travelling to venerate the Honourable Cross, she was selling her body, using it for sin, and so she went on to the festival. She went to the feast of the Cross in Jerusalem, but there she found the door shut. She could not go in. Nothing worked. She simply stood there. And you know what happened then, what she felt, what took place inside her. She entreated our Most Holy Theotokos, who was there in an icon inside, saying: let me come in, and I will change. And there she did change. And instead of going back to the place where the others, her companions, were waiting for her, she left for the desert, and she became Saint Mary of Egypt.

This lack of the fear of God, sadly, keeps God far from us. And that is why the devil fights us so fiercely on this point, because he knows that this communication, this contact, this union of man with God takes place above all in the church, through churchgoing, through the liturgy of the Church. He goes on to say, listen: "Tread the church as heaven, and reckon nothing fleshly or earthly in it." When you set your foot inside the church, consider that you have set your foot in heaven. If only a person could understand this.

A person thinks, when he goes to church, that he is walking into some sort of priest's shop, into some organised business, where there is the sacristan, where the cantor is coming in and out, going in and out of the sanctuary as if it were an election headquarters, where various people have installed themselves, the familiar faces and so on, sacristans, parish councillors and the like, the ones who have connections with the sanctuary and with the priest. No, he says. When you set your foot there, consider that you have stepped into heaven. And what matters is not the people you see in there now, the cantor, the sacristan, the parish committee, or anyone else, or even the priest. It is Christ who is in the church. It is the Theotokos who is in the church.

The angels are there, and the saint himself in whose honour the feast is kept. Saint John, Saint Nicholas, Saint George is present indeed. Therefore, take up the corresponding attitude, make the corresponding preparation, and only then set your foot inside. Otherwise it is a mere formality. It is not simply a matter of going to light a candle with the newspaper still in my hand. No. Nor of going after I have had my breakfast, just to take the antidoron, the blessed bread, and keep it for the next day. No. "Tread the church," he says, "as heaven, and reckon nothing fleshly or earthly in it." Everything in there, where you are going, is spiritual.

That vestment you see, that bread you see, that wine you see, the words that are spoken, the things that are heard, the things that are symbolised, all of them have a spiritual and divine meaning. And all of them are for the restoration of human nature. Do you understand now with what preparation, and with what fear of God, a person ought to enter the temple? John Chrysostom has a beautiful passage on this point. He says: "When you enter the temple, examine yourself and confess yourself first." That is, you have sat down, you have thought it over, you have found that you are in order, and only then do you go in. But we go because it is Sunday, and I do not know where you and I have been all week long, and what we have been doing.

How many times we have slipped, how many lies we have told, how many schemes we have worked, and I do not know what else. But because it is Sunday and we have the habit, off we go to church. And what comes of that? If you have the habit of preparing yourself for church, then blessed be. But if you have no habit of preparing for church, and you imagine that because you have put on your good clothes and are outwardly clean, in body, you are therefore fit for church, then you are deceiving yourself. It is not so. If anyone reads...

...the Sermon on the Mount, you will find a passage there where He says: when you are about to offer your gift, and there you remember that someone has something against you, not that you have something against him, but that he has something against you, leave, He says, the gift there. Go and find him, talk it over with him, be reconciled with him, and then come back and offer your gift. Otherwise it does not count.

The other person has something against us. Because many times others do have something against us, and they have good reason to. And just because we have nothing against them, we imagine that we are free to go ahead. And we think our offering will be accepted, our prayer, and I do not know what else. No. The matter is a very delicate one. Nor is that crush of people we see at the great feasts what it should be. Suddenly everyone is worthy to commune, and the next day they are worthy no longer. How was a man worthy on Holy Thursday and not worthy the day after? It is not possible for it to happen once a year, one single time, and for that to make him worthy. It is not possible. If he was worthy on the other days, then he is worthy today as well. Unless he has made a change, and reached that change. Metanoia, repentance, means exactly that: a change of mind, a turning of the nous, changing your road. But if he is going to do the same things all over again, and does them knowingly, then he did not truly commune even then. He is like those we spoke of earlier, who sin knowingly, saying that next week they will go and confess. And Satan answers back and says: and who told you that what you did with deliberate forethought will be forgiven?

Who told you it is forgiven? Where do you get your assurance from, since you did this thing with deliberate forethought? "I will sin, and then I will go and confess." It is one thing to fall because someone laid a hand on you and you were overcome, and quite another to sin against a person deliberately, planning it out and adding that in as well. Who told you, he says, that this is forgiven? And so it becomes a tangle. You understand, and there is no way out of it. This, then, is the point I would like us to be careful about, seeing how useful it is for a person, and of course, if a person takes into account that the mercy of God is prepared, and that he must prepare himself, then he will place his hope in this, and immediately the question of putting his life in order presents itself.

The preparation for entering the temple, because in the morning at the Doxology and in the evening at Vespers we say these very words: "Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we have hoped in Thee." As much as we have prepared, that is how much You will give us. Exactly that much He will give. Do not expect anything more than that. That much we prepared, and many of us prepared nothing at all, of course. We did not cleanse ourselves at all, we did not love, we did not forgive, we did not do the things we ought to have done, and these are the very things regarded as the preconditions for a person to receive. We have said it before: think of the preparation a person makes just in order to go shopping. Look at housewives when they are about to go to the market.

The cart is ready, and the right container for the potatoes, and the can for the oil. Correspondingly, we take the appropriate vessels, liquid containers for liquids and solid containers for solids. They smell them, they wash them, they clean them, they inspect them, they get them ready, so as to bring things back for the household. So the corresponding preparation is made, cleanliness and so forth, in order to go to the market and bring something back from there. But where are you going to put this thing? Did the Samaritan woman not hear it from our Christ, or did she not? What did He say to her? Where are you going to put it? To draw this water, you brought your vessel to take it from the well. And to give you My grace, this living water...

What will you draw it with? That is what goes down into the well. There is the well, and there is the water. She had had one man after another, and they kept coming to her. Where is she going to put it? Or how is she going to come here, get herself clean, and be given this gift? It takes preparation. First she has to put her life in order. First she has to confess that yes, the man she is with now is a sixth. That is the point. It is not simply that it is Sunday, not simply that it is Pascha, or a great feast of the Most Holy Theotokos, and so I will go to church and walk in. How will you light that candle at the candle-stand, at the manoualion, and set it there for the saint? Why? Because it is the day of the feast, and some people have gotten themselves ready.

Think about the person who has a nameday. Doesn't he get everything ready? He has it all ready — the tables set, the drinks, everything — because he is expecting friends and people he knows to come and wish him many years. And why? So that you will do the same for him, so that he can come to you and do the same. Now, what preparation did you make when you were going to go to church, to honor the saint and to ask through his intercessions for Christ's mercy on you and on your family? So the whole matter turns on preparation, and on what you are aiming at. And here you have to understand that the devil is cunning, and he sets three traps for a person. The first trap is that you should not go to church at all. The second trap is that, if you do go, you should go late to the service.

And the third trap is this: if he cannot catch you with the first two, then you should not go with a clean conscience, not go prepared. And most people are caught in one of the three. Some do not go at all, some go late, some go completely unprepared. There are only a few people who think it out and start the night before — because the Liturgy begins the night before, from Vespers. It does not begin in the morning after the third bell, as we say. Those few are ready both in the evening and in the morning. They are careful, they keep watch over themselves, they hold back from food and from fleshly things, so that they may come fasting, and come in the morning with a clear head.

When you see a church, know what is inside it: Paradise is inside. Tread the church as heaven, and reckon nothing fleshly or earthly in it. That is why this holy man says it — so that a person, from the moment he sets foot inside, may say, "Lord, count me worthy to enter this church worthily, and count me worthy to come to the heavenly one as well." That should be his aim, and that is the meaning of the candle we light at the candle-stand. That candle-stand is the Church on earth, the Church militant, and we pray that God will count us worthy one day to go up to the great chandelier, the polyeleos, and to be one little light ourselves there in God's chandelier, hanging beneath the Pantocrator. Tread the church, he says, as heaven. And reckon nothing fleshly in it — leave all of that outside. Know it and set it all aside. Everything you are walking into in there is spirit.

So pay attention to everything that heals you, everything spiritual, and take part there as fully as you can, so that your participation really means communion with Christ in the Divine Liturgy. However good a person may be, that goodness does not come to anything outside the church. Not at the coffee shop, not on a stroll, not anywhere else. A person is not saved anywhere apart from Christ, and if all the good he does outside is going to be counted for him, he has to come to the Divine Liturgy. Remember the man who fell among robbers, and what Christ did for him. And where did he finally leave him? He shut him up in the inn.

"My inn," the inn that receives all, the one that takes everyone in — that is the Church of Christ. That is my inn. It is in there that a person is carefully healed, the person who has fallen among robbers. Outside — in the market, at home, at work, at the shore, out on a walk — the devil will bite you. He will bite you with the eye, with the ear, with your way of living, with your illness, he will bite you. He will do damage to you, to your soul, and you have to come back to the inn, because that is your inn, that is your shelter. Come back and be safe there.

So preparation is a responsibility, and so is going to church, because it is there that a person is healed. Be whatever you like out in the world, take whatever fine positions you like — none of it works for heaven. Only in the church will you find rest and refreshment and healing. There is where the grace of the Holy Spirit tends to you, and salvation comes, however wounded you are, however bruised you are, however much you have fallen among robbers — which is what happens to every one of us out there. And the church is not only what I have described up to now. More generally, when a person really sees what is inside the church — because God is present there and everything there is spiritual — he is amazed, he sees how different it is.

He becomes a different person.

Even the man who had his breakfast and came, even the man who came in casually, lit a candle and glanced at something — even he will get something out of it. Think how rested the body feels when you come out of a hot bath. How many times are we tired, in body and in soul, and you take a bath, or a shower, or whatever it is each of us can manage, and afterward you feel light, you feel somehow different, just from the water. And now think what it is to go into the spiritual bath-house of the church, with everything that is chanted there, everything that is said there, and everything that comes down there from heaven.

A person is lifted up and made new when he stands inside the church.

Someone wrote a small book about two visions, one for laypeople and one for clergy — two visions, that is. One of a certain Sultan Amurat, who came to receive in the church, and one of John Chrysostom's, which he saw constantly and which he had solemnly charged his disciples not to write down and not to speak of until after his death. If a person could have that spiritual picture, if he could see what goes on inside the church and especially inside the altar, he would not even dare come in. We would be terrified. And here on the Holy Mountain fathers do see the angels who serve inside the altar. A discerning Athonite father cried out once —

— he had stumbled, he bumped into the angel and fell against him, as he was passing behind the Holy Table. He fell right against the angel. And how are we going to grasp these things? How are we going to feel them, we who stand inside the altar and carry on conversations about all sorts of things? When the priest says "Blessed is the Kingdom" in the morning, as John Chrysostom says, immediately angels come down from heaven. The moment he says "Blessed is the Kingdom," before anything else begins, immediately the angels come down. Look at the little book, at the cases it records, and see what this holy father says. And we have no idea what is happening to us. And it is not only that. We know nothing at all about the Divine Liturgy. Years ago, by God's grace, as those of you who were with me will remember —

— twenty-six homilies interpreting the Divine Liturgy. Twenty-six homilies interpreting the Divine Liturgy, from "Blessed is the Kingdom" all the way to the dismissal. And do you realize, I said nothing compared to what I could have said, or should have said. Nothing. Twenty-six homilies of interpretation of the Divine Liturgy. We believe, but we do not act on it. Something comes into my mind and I have to say it, since it comes, because it may help someone. Many people keep namedays — and here the text is speaking about the memorials of the saints. There is still a good custom that has not yet died out: a woman brings a prosphoron, an offering loaf, to the church on that day. Unfortunately, women today —

— with their fingernails, they will not stoop to knead a prosphoron. They order it from the bakery, and it comes out a shapeless thing, a lump you cannot do anything with. The knife will not even cut it; you have to soak it before you can cut it up into antidoron, the blessed bread handed out after the Liturgy. And then you see it: she brings it after the Holy Gifts have already been prepared, and brings the name along with the loaf. At the Creed, the loaf and the name. At the dismissal, the loaf and the name, for whoever has the nameday. It is a bad thing, and we would have spared ourselves a great deal if the Church had not accepted it, or if the Church had printed up some little slips of paper —

— so that every woman who does not know these basic things, when she handed over her offering, would be given that slip and would read it: "Your name will not be commemorated, because the proskomidi, the preparation of the gifts, is already finished. Take care: if you love your people, whether they have died or are still living, next time bring it the evening before, or in the morning while the proskomidi is being done." The harm would have been contained, and the body of the faithful would have been enlightened a little — people who bear the name of Christ, but who in this respect are not Christ's at all. Because they have not learned that they need to do this properly and to come to church at the right time. Many people bring an offering for their father, and on Saint Nicholas's day they bring a prosphoron, and take it up at the dismissal.

The priest commemorates the names out loud, if he is conscientious, and I have nothing against that — but no portion goes in, nothing is placed in the Holy Chalice. So there is some comfort in it, half of it is there, fine, but the thing was not done as it should have been. That is why a person needs to know these things. He does not know them, and so he makes no preparation at all. Many people also think, as I said, that they will be saved outside the church, because they are good people, and they take no account of the church. This is where the weight lies. A person out in this open sea, tossed about and battered by the waves, is wounded in his life, he sins, he is bruised, he is knocked about again and again. That is why our Lord gave us the church.

For all the blows a person takes out in the world, he needs somewhere to run, somewhere to escape the fire. Listen to what John Chrysostom thinks about the church, the church we do not consider necessary for every day, but only for Pascha and the great feasts, the Resurrection, the Nativity. He says: just as a man caught in a storm at sea, drenched by the waves, runs for the harbor —

— so those who take refuge in the church escape the storm and the assault, and no longer fear the blows. That is what he wants to show. There is no attack of evildoers, no violence of the spirits, no plot of Satan that can harm you there, no scheming of your enemies can touch you. So, he says, since it is free of all these things, the church is truly a harbor of souls. For everything is given through it: the waves are stilled, and whoever comes in and hears the Scriptures read is changed within, he is made compunctionate and set right, and everything in him is transformed.

So, with all the fearful trials that pursue a person, once he comes to church all those blows and all those spiritual attacks are driven far from him, and he comes to stillness and is at peace. And concerning the Holy Table, the same father says: this altar is a heavenly table — which fits exactly with what I told you, that the church is the threshold of heaven. So the altar is the table of heaven's own sanctuary. It receives what comes from the earth and sends it up to heaven. "Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee, in all and for all" — the wheat is Yours, the wine is Yours, and we ask You to bless them and to send them back down to us with Your divine grace. It receives what comes from the earth and sends it up to heaven; it receives what comes from heaven and gives it to the earth. Everything is carried up so that God may bless it, and then sent back down, so that we may receive it and be sanctified.

You look at an earthly altar, he says, and you are lifted up to what stands above — to that awesome and fearful Table, fearful even to the angels, set higher than the arches of heaven. So if it is a fearful thing even for the angels, you can imagine what it must be for the rest of us. And the third counsel of this holy father is this: do not stay away from the churches, do not keep your distance from the churches. Nothing is equal to the Church. It is firmer than rock, it is higher than heaven, it is broader than the earth.

...above and below, and nothing was ever contained apart from these things. The things you cannot contain, he says, will pass before you at this very moment, today. You see them beforehand as through glass; they are always cared for, yet always... For this reason Scripture called her by this name, and for this reason it called her so, and such good things, for that purpose. And all this concerns the Church, the Church which this holy man sets before us, saying that nothing fleshly or earthly is to be reckoned in it. Do not think in that way. Consider it holy, and find your portion there. There is another responsibility, and this one too goes unnoticed. We have our demands.

We want that, when we come to church, the church should be ready, beautifully kept, and that the people who work in the church should be ready to offer us whatever they can, to wash our feet, to kiss our hands, and I don't know what else they should do for us. And it has never once crossed our minds that we too have an obligation in this. There is a particular prayer in the church, and in fact yesterday, as we were coming back from Corfu, someone asked me at that moment what this prayer means that says: "those who love the beauty of Your house." What is that? Why is it there? It is not only for the sacristans. Nor for the church wardens.

Nor for the priest alone, but for all of us. We too ought to care about the good order of the church. We ought to care and to give our very best in the church, to have concern for the church. It should have a warden, it should have a sacristan, it should have a priest, it should have everything that goes with it. Some people would have arranged for there to be an office and for everything to be in place; but the things you would expect to be genuine, you can't be sure of. Now and then, out of some need, we make our bargains. "Saint George, make my husband well and I'll have your icon made, I'll have your icon plated for you." Some people don't even fall ill...

And if Saint George doesn't work the miracle, then I give you nothing. Give to me, and I'll bring something to you. And if you go and look at the icon stands, you will find vainglory written all around them: so-and-so gave this. Often they even put the surnames. The surnames. And later the Panagopouloses. The world has to know the name Panagopoulos too, apparently. There is no humble person, there is no one who knows...

Let me take the opportunity to tell you this. Humility is truly a great subject. Vainglory strips you bare. But once you confess it, first of all, it no longer gets a grip on you. It vanishes. It vanishes. You are humble. But the moment you say that you are humble, it turns against you and brings forth its own games again; it is a high grammar, this. Listen to what people say. Which of us has taken an interest, out of love, that the church should be cared for, that it should be made beautiful, that those who serve should be paid enough and not have to go out to work, since most of them...

They are forced to take another job as well. A family cannot live on five, or seven, or four, or five, or ten thousand. They have to have some other work. And you see, I don't accept that a parish, especially one in Athens, with thousands of people in it, cannot put twenty thousand into the fund, and that there cannot be services there every day. Care about the church. And when someone comes freely into the church and finds things in a bad state, dirty, and it upsets you inside because nothing is in order. And then you say, "Look here, sir" — where did you get that right? What have you ever contributed, what interest have you taken in this church existing, in this temple being kept up? How could anyone possibly maintain what is inside it?

And then you turn round and want everything to be beautifully kept, and want people to be there and to make a fuss over you. You never took the slightest interest. "Those who love the beauty of Your house," then — this needs to be sustained. It needs offering. And first of all not money, but blood. Because the Church gives blood and asks for blood. I am writing today to Kefalonia, and a woman there writes to me that in our village we are five hundred people, eighty children in primary school, forty in high school, and they have nothing at all.

Why don't you place an order in Germany for them to send you a priest in a box? They send coffins, but they won't send you a priest. How is it that this village, which produced sea captains, which produced generals, which produced lawyers, which produced midwives, which produced microbiologists, which produced scientists, did not produce even one priest? Why should it not produce one? God gives a talent to this one and calls him from childhood and brings him out on the road: this one is a surgeon, that one is a builder, this other one with his little knife, another one opens up your mother's machines and everything, he is a mechanic; and another one takes a milk tin and puts coals in it and spreads a tablecloth in front of your mother, and he becomes a priest, and he does his priestly work. Who makes these things happen? Who gives the talents? God gives them.

So in that village too — either there never was such a talent, or there was, but it was torn up by the roots. The godmother uprooted it, the woman next door uprooted it, the uncle uprooted it, and my own father: "I'm going to make my child a priest" — take the telephone, ring Athens so they can send you one; and tomorrow they collapse and they are left like dogs. And, Lord, will there even be a priest to read a trisagion over you? Then you will understand what harm you did, that your village took no interest at all and you never gave your children. That is what he is like, that is what happens in such cases. We don't hesitate to give money to make a chandelier — and what for? So they can put names on it. Or to build a church — but let him first give the foundation...

People, how many good homes, how many educated children could be given to their church, and are not given. They are not given!

They are not handed over, and these people make no sacrifice for it, because it is a great thing to become a priest. Not prime minister, not president of the republic, not king — the priest is higher. Not an angel, not an archangel — the priest is higher. But how does this come about? Have you ever read Saint Cosmas of Aetolia? He gives this counsel: if you have a single coin, he says, and before you stand a priest and a king, you will give it to the priest before the king; and if you have a single coin and before you stand an angel and a priest, you will give it to the priest before the angel. The rank of the priest is higher, and people ought to understand this.

And what I once told you I will repeat. When the English came down here to Piraeus after the liberation, an English general came, and at that time the late Papandreou was head of the government here, and he went down to receive him. Papandreou knew the family of the English admiral, and he addressed him. He had a tongue on him, that man; he honored him and called him blessed, because, he said, fortune had granted it to him. Fortune had appointed him — for Papandreou did not believe, or perhaps he did believe — fortune had appointed him to come to such a country of light, with its history, as the first man after the liberation. He ought, he said, to consider himself...

...a fortunate man, that fortune had bestowed this honor on his family. Something along those lines, more or less, in the simplest terms. "Mr. President, thank you very much for the kind things you have said about me; but know that the honor and the first place in our family do not belong to me, nor to the other one — they had a lord as well, a great figure — but to a younger brother of mine, who is a priest. And what a priest! A Presbyterian minister! A Presbyterian minister! What a priest! A priest who breaks the bread and shouts out! A Presbyterian minister!

They had two glasses of wine and a little bread, in remembrance — merely, in remembrance, merely. Where did you find that word "merely," sir? Does the Gospel say "merely in remembrance," or does it say "in remembrance," telling us where the body was and where the blood was? And Paul says that whoever does not discern that the bread and the cup are the body and the blood, you also, and many of you. Doesn't Paul say it? Let them examine themselves. So it is the real body and the real blood of Christ. And this man says: it is only in remembrance. And they fill their houses and they come down to Jesus Christ. And we treat it as though it were nothing. You should have gone and become one yourself. Tomorrow, when they lay hold of you and snatch away the vestments and drag you off, then you will understand what it means to be a priest, then you will understand what the Church means.

You will understand what it means to be criticized from morning till night, and to be devoured by that tongue of yours, so that this whole game I am caught up in should keep turning — and we have need of it. So here the man is marked out who considers all this to be necessary and takes an interest. He was asking me, then, what it means, "those who love the beauty of Your house": it means the people who take an interest. Not only in your own house, but in the common house, where Christ dwells. And that I would rather never have a house of my own, if the house of Christ is there; I would not want it. Each one of us is able to build not one house, but a second for the daughter, and a third for the son, and a fourth, and a fifth, and a sixth house.

But we give only a few pennies for the one house we all share together, which is God's house, where we go to meet Him, where our grandchild is baptized, and where all that I have been saying is done for the rest of our life here. All those who do not care about the beauty of the house neither pay attention, nor help, nor take any trouble. But those who offer themselves and make their offerings, those who take an interest in general — all these have a special blessing in the Church. And that is why it says: "those who love the beauty of Your house."

That is how it is; their offerings are not made. What is it that those heretics have? They have it, and they don't hesitate — this church of mine, that I may not be ashamed of it, a church where the rain doesn't come down on us from above, where things don't fall apart on us, so that people may greet God there. What are they doing less than we are? And they criticize us, and some of us as well, and they have to listen to these things and take them seriously, and so it is with the word. Who remembers when He went into the typological temple of Solomon and found people there in the courtyard selling and buying, and He made a whip and raised it and drove them out and scattered them? And then they understood that this passage applies to Him: "the zeal for Your house has consumed me." What a thing that is!

You and I, we ought to be zealous for the Church. The Church could have better days, and better people serving her, if those of us who supposedly are dying for the Church actually offered what we ought to offer. But we do not offer what we ought. We do not treat it as necessary, we do not consider it our concern, we do not carry it as our care. And all those who want to have something better, we simply wish for it, and we suppose...

...that the money will change hands and the words will do the rest. There was someone like that who said to me that he was ashamed to admit that he had nothing to give, and yet it costs him so many drachmas, and I smoke so many cigarettes a day, so much a day and more besides. They never think about any of these things. But God, who knows what the church means, who knows what is being accomplished in there and what takes place there, for that reason He always shows mercy and helps, so that people should come into the Church even without their own effort, and should persevere, and so that other people should come to help as well.

The priest himself will have to answer for it, even if he is a sinner. Christ tells him this Himself. The priest's sin is charged to the priest, even when he stands there for a moment and hands out the blessed bread, the antidoron, and distributes what belongs to God. His sin stays with him, in his own conscience. But you cannot be cut off from the antidoron because of the priest's sin.

We do not measure Holy Communion by the sin of the bishop or the sin of the priest. We do not judge it that way, and neither the bishop's stole nor his office is bound up with his sin. The sin will remain with him, and it is the priest who will answer for it.
