Summary
The fear of God, understood as reverence and awareness of divine judgment, is presented as the beginning of wisdom and the foundation of blessed eternal life. Saint Maximus the Confessor calls conscience an unerring judge whose verdict may continue to trouble a person even after human authorities have granted absolution. The lecture urges believers to stop when conscience objects, seek spiritual counsel and prayer, repair the harm they have caused, and return to God through repentance.

Tonight’s talk will continue with the sayings of a holy man from Mount Sinai. We had given a series of talks—ten of them, if I remember correctly. But he is an inexhaustible source, and so this evening I have gathered a few of his thoughts which, I believe, we need. Among his exhortations, he says the following:
“Have the fear of God, and with fervent love and purity always heed the witness of your conscience. In everything you do, regard God Himself as standing beside you.” I urge you: have the fear of God. This is the most essential thing a person must possess if he wishes to live here and also to exist there. And by “exist,” we mean to exist in blessedness, not under condemnation—to exist in eternity, on the right hand and not on the left.
According to Solomon and the Wisdom of Sirach, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom: “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” If you do not fear God, you cannot think rationally, you cannot consider what is truly for your good, and you cannot think in a way that will keep you safe either in this present age or in the age to come. But if you revere God, you fear God, because the fear of God means reverence for God. What does it mean for a wife to fear her husband? It means that she respects him, takes him seriously, and is mindful of him. The person who fears God takes God seriously, is mindful of God, and reveres God.
Everything depends upon Him. A person who pays no heed to God or to what God says—just as Adam paid no heed to Him—rejects the law of God. Where God tells him, “You shall not steal,” he steals. Where God tells him, “You shall not commit adultery,” he commits adultery. Where God says, “You shall not murder,” he murders. Such a person does not fear God, take God seriously, or pay heed to God. Here the saint’s command is: “Have the fear of God, and with fervent love and purity always heed the witness of your conscience.” With attentiveness and purity, he says, make use of what your conscience tells you.
Your conscience reminds you. Sadly, many people have not grasped or understood what a serious role the conscience plays and what its mission is within the human person. They have not understood it, and they do not make use of this voice, this power. If many people listened to their conscience, they would not be imprisoned, they would not be condemned, and often they would not even lose this earthly life. Yet many times they find themselves standing before the law, before the wife they have wronged or the husband they have wronged, or before the owner of something they are about to steal.
It sends a person all the sooner to places of torment. We find ourselves called to account. If a person consults his conscience, its whole teaching is summed up in what both we and Christ in the Gospel call the Golden Rule: “What you hate, do not do to another.” Do not do what you would not want others to do to you. Otherwise, you will violate your conscience, the moral law, the written law, and human law. When you refuse to listen to your conscience, you will find yourself opposed to this threefold law: you will endanger your earthly life and lose eternity.
God has placed the conscience within the human person so that he may perceive what he is doing: when he does good, he rejoices; when he does something evil, he is reproved and draws back. Yet, as you know, many of us do not heed this voice, as though we had no conscience. You know how much danger an apartment building is in when the heating system’s thermostat breaks: the whole boiler may explode. And you understand what happens when a car engine’s thermostat fails and the temperature reaches 150 degrees: the engine may blow apart. That is how it is. The conscience is the thermostat that directs a person onto the right road. He must never render it inactive. He must be attentive—always attentive to the...
little voice that God has placed within him. And yet, many times, because of our ego, our anger, our flesh, our self-interest, or the world, we say, “Stand aside, Madam Conscience. You have no say in this. I forbid you to speak. Stop shouting; I am not going to listen to you.” We even invent excuses to answer the conscience that points us toward the right path: “That is how the world is. Well, this is life; we must have our fun and enjoy it. Tell me, is there really anything beyond this life? This is all there is.” Yet conscience cries out: “No, it is not lawful. You must not do this. What you are doing is wrong. Would you want someone to do this to you if you were in the same position?” Nevertheless, many people do not make use of this little voice placed within them; they pay very little heed to it. And still the person persists.
First of all, he says, pay attention to the law of God. Fear God and take Him seriously, for He can cut the ground from beneath your feet in a single second. You may make all your calculations and plans and still never reach your destination. You may go to steal and be caught on the spot. You may go to commit fornication and be found there; you may even have to be physically separated like dogs. A thousand things can happen, like that incident outside Lamia which I once told you about: it happened upon a grave, on the marble slab, and surgery was required. Yet you see how God withholds His hand, because He is compassionate and long-suffering and awaits the person’s return and metanoia, his repentance. God loves the human person and does not desire his destruction. If God exercised His justice at every moment, no human being ought to remain in the world. Who is without sin? Who has not come under the judgment of God’s justice?
He is the judge of all. Do you remember what David said? “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” No one could stand before You if You chose to settle accounts and summon us to judgment, requiring us to answer for everything in detail. You understand how serious this matter is. A person must live on the basis of the fear of God and heed that bright red signal—for the human conscience is like a red traffic light. Do something evil and see how your heart pounds within you. Do something good and see how you rejoice. In the evening, if you come across a goat caught in something and set it free, you feel joy. But if you steal a branch from another person’s tree, you immediately feel an inner rebuke. What is it that rejoices in the one case and pricks you in the other? What is it? It is this little voice of God, the conscience, which we have often covered over so completely...
that its voice can no longer be heard. Everyone has a conscience—even the greatest criminals, the hardest of heart, and the most indifferent—but their conscience has been buried beneath layers of debris. The rubble piled upon it must be cleared away so that the mosaic beneath may appear again, revealing this beautiful work of God and allowing it to function. The longer a person remains in sin, the less his conscience can make itself known. It is like seeing a light far in the distance but being unable to distinguish it clearly. Is it red or white? You cannot see it directly. But the person who frequently cleanses himself through metanoia and confession, who receives Holy Communion, and who prays...
refines his conscience to such a degree that you sometimes hear questions asked here which make you laugh. You say, “He is looking for a flea in a haystack.” Yet that “flea in a haystack” is an inner reproach of conscience that prevents him from going any farther. He cannot sleep; he has lost his sleep because his conscience is highly sensitive. He has allowed it to function properly, and it gives him no leeway at all—not even to tell the slightest lie. He always finds another way, because there are always other ways. He takes courage and refuses to cover matters up, lest his conscience reproach him for having acted wrongly. If we could bring before ourselves on a screen every sin of just one day—our words, actions, and recollections—and watch them all that evening, we would not sleep that night when we saw how many of God’s laws and words we had transgressed. Sadly, however, the conscience does not function in many people. Before me I have...
a teaching of John Chrysostom, one of Saint Maximus the Confessor, and one from Paul in First Corinthians. Concerning the conscience, John Chrysostom says: “Just as the person who lives in wickedness is punished even before the judgment, being pierced by his conscience, so the person rich in virtuous deeds enjoys great joy even before entering the Kingdom, nourished by good hopes.” He says that, for the wicked, conscience is already Hell here, while for the good it is already Paradise here. The first, although he has not yet come to judgment and condemnation, is already punished here by the reproach of his conscience. The other rejoices and receives a foretaste...
through the humble deeds he performs toward his fellow human beings and before God; through his conscience, he already receives a foretaste here. Conscience, then, clearly shows a person where he is going. If your conscience testifies against you, stop and speak with it. See how beautifully Paul speaks when addressing those who are about to receive Holy Communion: “Let each one examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” Examine yourself, test yourself, and speak with your conscience. What does it tell you? Are you in good standing with the laws and commandments? If you are, proceed. But if you are not—even if the whole Patriarchate tells you yes while your conscience tells you no—do not proceed. Something is entangled, and you must disentangle it. Conscience, then, is already at work today as...
Hell for the wicked and Paradise for the good. Saint Maximus says, “Conscience is a person’s God and his unerring judge.” A person’s first judge is his own conscience. It is not the civil law; it is his conscience. A court may acquit you, yet you may still be unable to sleep because your conscience will not accept the verdict. Conscience is another judge. Do you remember the positive logismos, the thought I spoke about the other day? It concerned a monk who caused another monk to leave the monastery, return to the world, and marry. Fifty or fifty-five years have passed. All his spiritual fathers tell him, “It is over; the matter has been settled.” Yet he cannot be at peace. His conscience still reproves him. He carries the judge within himself; he carries the courtroom within himself. Conscience, therefore, is a person’s God and his unerring judge.
“Do not dishonor your conscience”—do not disregard it. When it tells you no, do not rush ahead. “Do not dishonor your conscience, which gives you excellent counsel.” Your conscience, he says, always counsels you in the best way. It is what is called the unwritten law. “For it sets before you counsel that is divine and angelic.” The counsel your conscience gives you is divine and angelic. “It frees you from the hidden defilements of the heart and, at your departure from this life, grants you boldness before God.” If, he says, you listen to your conscience and take care to set matters right with God, your conscience becomes peaceful. You acknowledge your fault before God, ask for His mercy, and receive forgiveness.
As far as lies within your power, you repair the harm you have caused, and then you proceed freely toward eternity. The Apostle Paul says in Second Corinthians 1:12: “For our boasting”—if you truly wish to boast, Corinthians—“is this: the testimony of our conscience.” Ask your conscience whether it permits you to boast. If your conscience says otherwise, you cannot boast. Conscience is a judge, a great judge. I do not know how yours functions or what it tells you. But when a little voice rises from within and says, “This is not lawful,” be careful and stop. Do not say, “It is nothing.” Sit down and examine the matter. This logismos, this intrusive thought, must be brought...
to judgment and examination. Tell it to your spiritual father. Tell someone else what you are about to do—someone whom you know understands more than you do. And if you have no one, kneel down, shut yourself in a room, and cast yourself before Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, or a Saint for whom you have particular devotion. Say, “As You see, I am intending to do this and this. Will I be doing good or evil? Is it for my benefit or to my harm? Is it merely satisfying my ego, or am I trying to gain something in this world that may harm me later?” For this holy man goes on to answer this very point that I am telling you about—although I am getting ahead of my own thoughts. In any case, I insist once again on this matter: pay attention to your conscience. Do not cover it over. Let it speak. Place your conscience and your life on firm and certain ground.
Set your life before your conscience and before the laws of God. Do not pass them by. When God says one thing, do not say another. Do not search for excuses, pretending that God did not express Himself properly. He spoke rightly, especially since God spoke long before the present issue arose. Here is an example: today women are being masculinized and men feminized. That is today’s fashion. God did not make a new decision about this matter today, nor did any Synod convene today to address it. Fifteen hundred years before Christ, He anticipated it and said, “When a woman puts on a man’s clothing, it is an abomination in the eyes of God; and when a man puts on a woman’s clothing, it is an abomination in the eyes of God.” Stop there.
Paul wrote nineteen hundred and seventy years ago in First Corinthians that if a woman cuts her hair, it is a disgrace to her, and if a man lets his hair grow long, it is a disgrace to him. There is no room for clever arguments—none at all. Do not try to find some way to justify yourself. He has anticipated you from the beginning, caught you before you begin, and tells you, “Take heed to these things.”
They should take off what they are wearing. And tell the men not to wear what belongs to women, because next year you will have nothing left to wear. And within a year we had even more extreme things. Perhaps we take these things lightly; I do not know how we regard them or where we are heading. Yet God continues to lay down His law and to remind us, while man refuses to listen. One day he will have to answer for it. So when God has placed conscience within you and it cries out, “No!”—listen. One day a boy stole a wallet. An elder discovered that the boy, George, had stolen it. He took hold of him and said, “Come here, George. Why did you steal the wallet?” “Grandfather,” he replied, “I didn’t know it was yours.” And what did the elder say? “But didn’t you know it was not yours?”
“Didn’t you know that it was not yours?”
That is the second thing you must tell him: “This does not belong to you.” Your conscience cried out to you, but you slapped it down and said, “Be quiet, Madam Conscience.” Is that not so? You do this in all sorts of situations. You walk along the road and see another person’s pears, oranges, or lemons, and you reach out and pick one. How would you feel if you saw someone—or several people—doing the same thing in your own orchard? Would you want them to do that to you? No. Then why do you do it? You go into an office where a certain married man works, a man with little children, and you turn his head and take their father away from them. Would you want someone to do that to you? Or perhaps a woman is penniless, and you take another man’s wife—the mother of his children. Would you want someone to do that to you? No. Then why do you do it?
Conscience speaks within you. Is a criminal law really necessary? Does not the law within you already tell you these things? Of course it does. If we examine all this, we shall find that it is reasonable—not only morally and divinely right, but reasonable in itself. It stands firm; it cannot be otherwise. Therefore, let each person pay attention to his conscience. Let him not put it to sleep or numb it with one excuse after another. Such excuses are not accepted at the Bank of God. They are counterfeit coins. One day he will be compelled to confess, “Righteous are You, O Lord,” and he will go to Hell of his own accord. He will not wait to hear, “Depart from Me.” He will go there by himself, just as a pig, when it enters the courtyard gate, does not go upstairs to the dining room or to any of the other rooms. It goes down to its own pen. The donkey goes to its own place.
The dog goes to its own place. Only the children and the master of the house go upstairs. The animals go to their own places by themselves. In exactly the same way, each of us will go to his proper place on that day, however many clever excuses we may now produce in answer to the conscience that reproves us. For Christ gave us a Gospel that does not accommodate our flesh, our ego, our self-interest, or our fashions. And do we expect Him to tear it up because of what it tells us? He will not tear it up. It was even written down by the enemies of Christ, yet it remains throughout eternity and will always remain, because it is like oil: it will continually rise above all the oceans of evil and all the oceans of sin. This is how this holy man begins. Indeed, he uses certain words repeatedly—I do not know whether you noticed them: “Think of God Himself as standing beside you.”
“In everything you do, at every moment.” Whatever you do, see God beside you, watching you. As John Chrysostom says, many people commit sin because they have no fear of God. If we allowed ourselves to think that whatever we are doing is being done before God, many times we would not do it. Or if we had done it a hundred times without that thought, once the thought entered our mind, those hundred times would be reduced to one, two, three, or five. After a long struggle we might still fall, but not as we do now, surrendering without a fight. Why do we act as we do now? Because we have no fear of God. Above the iconostasis, even above the icon of the Holy Trinity and the Mystical Supper—which is at the heart of man’s salvation—there is an eye within a triangle.
It is the all-seeing eye. We Orthodox, above all, begin our prayers with “O Heavenly King.” In that prayer there is the phrase, “Who are everywhere present and fill all things.” Where is He? If you go to the sea, He is present. If you go up into heaven, He is present. If you go down into Hades, He is present. Where can you go? Where can you escape so that the eye of God will not be there? A man has his mistress waiting around the corner, so he breaks the lamp to create darkness, and no one sees him. Or the woman kills the dog so that it will not bark when her lover comes inside. The dog does not see you; the husband does not hear you; the wife does not hear you.
The prosecutor does not see you; no one sees you—but God sees you. And it would be better for all the prosecutors in the world to see you than for the eye of God to see you in your sin. So this holy man says, “Think of God Himself as standing beside you.” See Him as present here, close beside you, “in everything you do, at every moment,” whether good or evil. Money, especially, leads many people into numerous temptations. They engage in schemes and frauds, first to acquire it and then to multiply it. There is a story along these lines. A well-intentioned merchant received a visit from one of those men who know how such schemes are done.
These are corrupt men. One of their salesmen opened the door without knocking and said, “Well, what are we going to do?” He did not even say, “Good morning, Mr. So-and-so,” because such men act with complete familiarity; they know the arrangement. It is like a general dealing with an ordinary soldier. Would you expect a soldier to stand as an equal beside the general? Yet this man will open the door and walk straight into a place where even the general’s aide hesitates to enter. Why? Because they work these things together; they are partners in the same game. That is exactly what happened in this case. He said, “What is it? So-and-so has a plan. This is our chance to make off with the shares.” The merchant answered, “I cannot do that.” “You fool, are you out of your mind? This is our chance!”
“I will make money, but you will make far more—you are the one who will put up the money.” The merchant glanced again toward something he seemed to see inside the office, then recoiled and repeated, “I cannot do that.” What had happened? Christ had appeared in the corner of his office and was standing there. He beheld Christ. At that sight he swallowed his words. “No, no, no,” the other man kept insisting. Then he slammed the door, called him a simpleton and a fool, and went to find someone else with whom to carry out the scheme. The Lord turned to the merchant and said, “You did well not to agree to buy those shares. If you have money, you should help that man so that he may not be lost.”
Otherwise, you would only be dealing him the final blow on top of everything else.
A little later, another man came with smuggled and stolen goods for the same sort of business. “You know he will buy them,” they said. But the merchant did not take those either; he refused. Then he was subjected to every insult the tongue could produce, because he had given these men such familiarity through the schemes and frauds they had committed together in the past. The man slammed the door in his face and left. And the Lord continued, saying to him, “They treated you rightly. You must earn your bread by the sweat of your brow; this is not an honest way.” So I ask: if, when I was about to steal, swear falsely, slander, accuse, commit fornication, or go down some other sinful path, I saw Christ—God Himself—standing before me, would I do it? No, I would not.
Therefore, remember God; remember Christ; remember your guardian angel. From the day of our Baptism, the angel accompanies us, remains present, and records all our sins. Only in the sin of sodomy does he hide his face. This is the sin of Sodom, for which heaven rained down fire and brimstone and burned the city to ashes. According to the Fathers, only before this sin does the angel hide his face; during all other sins he remains present. So, I ask again: if I had this fear—the awareness that Christ sees me at this very moment—would I do such a thing? Consider women completely undressed in their rooms, trying on the men’s clothes they have sewn and looking in the mirror to see whether they suit them. If the Most Holy Theotokos were in the room, would they dare to do that?
They put the Most Holy Theotokos outside. “We will let you know when we need you. We know that you are our nurse and servant, and we will call you then. But for now, please go outside, because I live according to the world.” Then you will go with the world. “I live according to the flesh.” Then you will go with the one who rules the flesh, because, as Paul says to the Galatians, “He who sows to his flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap incorruption.” These are few words, but they contain a great deal of substance. I do not know how you grasp this matter, how you see it, or whether you understand how much is contained in it. Would that person still sin?
Would the young woman sin if she saw Christ beside her? Would the young man sin? Would the married person sin? Would they sin, sin, sin? We do all these things because we have no fear of God. “Where is God now? We are far away, down in the ravine; no one can see us.” We are far from our father’s eyes, far from the husband’s eyes, far from the wife’s eyes, far from the eyes of the police. But you are not far from the eyes of God. God is everywhere present and fills all things. Once, a woman had recently married, and ten days after the wedding she and her husband invited a mutual friend to their home for a meal. She arranged a secret meeting with that man while her husband was at work. The day before the appointment, she told her husband, “You know, if you come home tomorrow afternoon, I will not be here. Do not worry or be upset; I will have gone to the dentist. My tooth has been hurting.”
The poor man believed her. The next afternoon, the woman got ready, looked at herself in the mirror, picked up her handbag, and set out. As she passed through the entrance hall, the case containing their wedding crowns fell from above. She had placed the crowns high up, you see. The case fell behind her and shattered into a million pieces. She stopped short and heard a voice say, “These crowns are no longer needed here, considering where you are going.” She turned back, put down her handbag, and came to her senses. We do not think about such things or take them seriously, because we do not listen to our conscience. As we have said, conscience is God’s sentinel within us, crying out, “Take care! Do not do this.”
I once told you about a man who had a country house and a dog that kept him awake by barking. He would step out onto the mat and shout, “Be quiet!” The dog would cower down, and the man would go back to bed. A little later, the dog would begin howling and running all around. Again the man would come out and shout, “Be quiet!” The dog would cower down again. When it happened a third time, just as the man was falling asleep, he took his double-barrelled shotgun, went downstairs, fired at the dog, and killed it. Then there was true silence. It was like those who attack a nightclub at night and execute a politician because they could not sleep: “Stop the music—we haven’t slept!” But when morning came and the man went downstairs, he found that his shop had been emptied. The dog had seen suspicious movements outside. Instead of saying, “The dog is howling and barking; something must be happening,”
he killed the dog so that he could sleep peacefully. And he did sleep—but the devil robbed him. The same thing happens to every person who fails to pay attention. The saint insists: “Think of God Himself as standing beside you”—believe that He is at your side—“in everything you do, at every moment.” This applies even when you do something good, if I may broaden the point. A good deed is not truly good unless it is done well, as Basil the Great says so beautifully: “The good is not good unless it is done in a good way.” Basil the Great says this. Many times we do a good deed in order to place someone under an obligation to us, to be seen by others, out of vainglory, or so that our name may be written among the benefactors and we may continually seek their praise and be treated as great patrons.
God sees it. Does He accept it? No, He does not accept it or record it; He does not want it. We should ask, “My God, I have done this good deed. Do You approve of it? Did I do it rightly?” A person must pay attention to this side of the matter as well. I think this subject is developed further on, and perhaps we shall discuss it later. Meanwhile, the saying continues: “Flee from praise, and be ashamed of slander.” Flee from praise. This is connected, I think, with what I was beginning to say earlier. Do not seek praises such as, “Thank you, well done, I shall always be indebted to you,” and so forth. Flee from them; flee. Do not listen to them. Stop your ears. Let go of the good deed you have done. Do not seek to learn where it went or what came of it. Do it and leave! For praise has such power
that it can draw you into its grasp. Although the deed itself is so good and spiritually beneficial, it can be transformed in an instant according to your inward disposition, and you can lose the good you have done. Therefore he says, “Flee from praise, and be ashamed of slander.”
Accusations—accusations and slander. Be ashamed of them. Do not let them pass your lips, and do not sit and listen to them. Many people often sit us down to speak against others. Others compel us to read their newspapers, filled with baseless accusations and charges against rulers, public figures, and so forth. This is a grave mistake, both for those who do it and for us, who encourage them by reading such things. That means we are like them; these things interest us too. We are like flies: we seek out filth rather than what is clean. Yet there are so many other ways in which the situation can be helped...
in one way or another, so that salvation may come. “Flee from praise,” he says, “and be ashamed of reproaches”—that is, accusations and slander of every kind. Close your ears and your mouth; do not discuss such things. Thank you.
“Rejoice when you practice virtue, but do not become puffed up.” Rejoice because God helps you to do something good, to say something good, to prevent some evil, or to heal some evil. Rejoice in that, but do not become puffed up. Why should I not become proud?
Why should you not think highly of yourself? Because you did not do it; He did it through you. Man is incapable of doing anything good by himself.
“Without Me you can do nothing.” The Lord Himself said this, and it is written in the fifteenth chapter of John. A person is deluded if he thinks that his achievements are his own—that by himself he can exercise self-restraint, reach out his hand to give alms, open his mouth to forgive someone, or offer counsel. He can do nothing. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.” Man is a funnel: whatever God allows passes through him. It belongs to the Lord. Blessed is the person who acknowledges this and says, “My God, Glory to God that today I became the means by which this person heard a few helpful words and received comfort,” and so forth, without seeking thanks for ourselves. Sometimes, when people thank me, I tell them, “God did everything.” When the clouds give rain, no one applauds the clouds.
They praise the One who sent the clouds, the One who made them, filled them, and commanded them to pour down their water; they honor Him highly as their benefactor. Rejoice in Him, glorify Him, and bless Him. What have you to be proud of? If this expression may be used, boast only in your weaknesses, as Paul says.
“In my weaknesses,” he says. “Rejoice, then, when you practice virtue, but do not become puffed up”—do not think highly of yourself. “Lest,” he adds in a beautiful image, “you suffer shipwreck within the harbor.” Take care that you do not suffer shipwreck in the very harbor itself—that, precisely when you are doing your finest work, offering your finest service, and thinking yourself secure because you are doing good, you fall and drown together with that good deed.
For in a fraction of a second that deed can be altered and take on another form, according to your inner disposition—according to your pride or your humility. “However much you advance in the Law, know that you still fall short of perfection.” Whatever you do not fulfill rightly from the Law—whatever you cut short and leave incomplete—know that this is lacking from your perfection. There is real depth here, though it may look shallow. Do you understand? We say, “That one thing does not matter. I do not think this other thing matters either, nor the next.” Thank you.
Someone takes care to remain pure before Holy Matrimony, yet after Holy Matrimony he refuses the begetting of children. He does not want to fast, to pray, to believe, or to ask for what he needs, and so forth. He removes all these things. But they are then lacking from his perfection, because all of them contribute to the perfection of the human person. Therefore, whatever you fail to do, whatever you do incompletely, and whatever you omit is lacking from your perfection. “You fall short of perfection,” he says. It is as though God had placed a thousand pieces before you and told you to use them to make a bust, a perfect work.
You use five hundred pieces and leave the other five hundred unused. The result will naturally be patched and incomplete. Knees will be missing, hands will be missing, fingers and ears will be missing, and so forth. Why? Because you did not put those pieces in their proper places; you did not use them. That is what he means, and it is true.
The emergency number used to be five fives. That is why he told me to say to you, “Five-five-five-five-five—five fives.” Was it not five? Suppose you have an accident or a fire, but you dial only four of the fives. What happens then? Will the emergency service be troubled by it? Will help come? It will not, because the number is incomplete. You did not want to dial the whole number. Some people say, “I dialed four of them; must I dial all five?” Likewise, there are ten commandments in the Old Testament. Someone says, “I do not keep all of them; I keep nine.” Well, if you keep nine, what will happen? You will still fall short. Man’s sojourn in this world...
and this entire way of life within the Orthodox Church have one purpose: to make the human person perfect. Christ does not make people half-finished; He makes the human person perfect. But when a person does not use everything given to him, when he cuts things out of the Law and casts some aside as unnecessary, saying, “Children are unnecessary; self-restraint is unnecessary; virginity, Holy Confession, Holy Communion, and saying ‘Lord have mercy’ so often are unnecessary—God gets tired of it too,” as people say—what will he make? Will he make a human person capable of standing in the Kingdom of Heaven, or will he produce something malformed? Certainly, he will produce something malformed, something unsuitable, bearing no true likeness and no longer fit to be received as an image of God. Have you seen some of those construction toys children have at home?
They contain various pieces with which the children make different designs, and so forth.
The children are kept occupied, and their intellect is cultivated to some extent. But if they do not use some of the pieces, they will make only caricatures—nothing complete. This is not because the pieces do not exist, but because they considered them unnecessary. It is like a man whose eyes were watering. He went to an ophthalmologist, but instead of letting the doctor examine him and determine what was wrong, he said, “Do not do anything else, doctor. I looked here, right at the front, and saw a little hole. Can you seal it up for me?” But those little openings are supposed to be in the eye. What did this man really need? He should not have gone to an ophthalmologist but to an auto-body repairman, who could put some filler there and seal the hole. Many people are like this. They imagine that God has created and ordained...
and has permitted laws and Canons to arise within His Church that are superfluous and unnecessary. Anyone who tries to fashion a human person for the Kingdom of Heaven in that way will produce a monster. Only the Law of God and the keeping of the commandments can form a perfect human person, fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. That is why he says: Whatever you cut away, remove, or leave undone, know that you will fall short of perfection. You will not be perfect. For the purpose of our remaining here is expressed in the commandments, “Become perfect” and “Become saints.” I do not know whether you have fully grasped this commandment as he presents it. We have ten minutes left. Continuing, this holy man offers the following thought concerning the passions.
“Before beginning any deed, examine how it will end.” What a beautiful thought. How could the world produce such a thought? How could its wise men and scientists produce it? How could those who reached the moon but never truly came down to earth understand it? “Before beginning any deed, examine how it will end.” Before you begin something, consider what its results will be. Think about the outcome and the consequences, as we say in more educated language, and only then begin. Yet we do not act this way. You take up smoking as a joke. Have you considered what you are choosing? Look at someone who has smoked for years and see what becomes of him. If you consider...
and reflect wisely upon the end, you will not make that beginning. Perhaps you enjoy a little drink, and so forth. You see other people drinking and imagine that it makes them manly. You also see some woman who has become an important person and drinks ouzo, and so on and so forth. But go and examine the alcoholics; read the relevant case histories, and then tell me. Perhaps you are thinking of living a free and uninhibited life, indifferent to everything. One day I passed through a narrow street by an ouzo tavern, where three young women and three men were sitting. In the five yards it took me to pass, I heard one woman say, “I do not commit myself to anyone. If I like a man, I go with him and move on; then I go to another.” A new kind of progress—we did not know this before, but now you have taught us. I understand. Yet if she went and saw those who had wrecked themselves in this way...
and saw the end awaiting her, perhaps she would never begin or take that first step. These are wise words: “Before beginning any deed, examine how it will end.” My son here eats as I used to eat. If I have five illnesses, he will develop ten. If I had gone to the Evangelismos Hospital and seen the diabetic ward—the open wounds, the damaged feet, eyes, hands, and so forth—and had understood that this was where my eating would lead, I would have stopped. But I do not reflect upon the consequences. Everything is fine for now, so we spread the table and I eat whatever I want, however I want. Yes—but examine your final end and see where this is leading.
Suppose you intend to dishonor another man’s sister or take another man’s wife. If you consider that this could set off a whole chain of consequences, or that one day you might end up on the point of a knife wielded by the wronged person—the father, mother, sister, wife, or someone else—perhaps you will not do it. If you consider that no one has ever prospered from stolen goods, that all ill-gotten gains have vanished throughout the ages, and that their consequences continue even to the fourth generation, perhaps you will not do such a thing. Or suppose you want to remain an atheist, as many of our young people do today. When called into court, they say, “I am an atheist; I will not place my hand on the Gospel.” Do you know what an atheist is? Someone one step ahead of the devil. Do you understand? For even the devil confesses with trembling that God exists. Although he does not want God, the devil nevertheless acknowledges that God exists. These people are one step ahead of the devil. If they would read about the end of all those atheists...
they would be afraid. If they knew what those people confessed in the end and the state in which they finished their lives, they would be afraid. They would not dare to do such a thing. They would take up the white cane, admit that they are blind, and walk carefully upon this transient earth, whose path they do not know. If people examined the consequences beforehand, as I have told you, many would not suffer what they have suffered. Let those who intend to withhold respect from their parents consider this—those who silence them, or give them a piece of bread and say, “Be quiet and sit over there in your corner. You have food and drink; you have no right to an opinion here.” What awaits such people? If they would read what happened to others who behaved in the same way, they would not dare to do it. They would see what became of every aspect of those people’s lives.
A person ought to consider what awaits him: that judgment awaits him, that the grave awaits him, that everything is refuse, and that no matter what he gains in this world, if he loses the world to come, he has failed. For the wise man is not the one who accumulates or destroys, but the one who saves souls, beginning with his own. This is what the wise Solomon says; it is not my own teaching. Read Proverbs 11:30, and you will find that “he who saves souls is wise.” So if a person does not place everything within this perspective, he will always suffer shipwreck. How many people have regretted it afterward because they insisted on putting their own hand into the fire? They suffered the inevitable consequences, even if our pride will not allow us to admit that we have failed miserably.
Pride often will not allow us to admit it. And yet, if we were willing to study our contemporaries—not people from the distant past—and examine the results of their lives, how they began, with what dreams, and how they suffered shipwreck, we would guard ourselves against many things and escape them. And so he says: “Night and day, keep your eyes fixed on the last day.” Night and day, look toward your final day. Do not look only at today; look at the last day. You will reach it—but consider how you will reach it. This is the great philosophy that can lead a person safely, so to speak. This is the great philosophy. My beloved, I have passed on only a few things to you.
If God permits, I will pass on a few more next time, and a few more the time after that. Keep whatever you think is useful, and set aside whatever you think you do not need.

Πρόσεχε, λέει, πρώτα τον νόμο του Θεού, να φοβάσαι και να λογαριάζεις τον Θεό, ότι μπορεί να σου κόψει τα πόδια μέσα σε δευτερόλεπτο. Μπορεί να λογαριάζεις και να υπολογίζεις και να μην προλάβεις να φτάσεις εκεί. Μπορεί να πας να κλέψεις και να καρφωθείς εκεί. Μπορεί να πας να πορνεύσεις και να βρεθείς εκεί πέρα, μπορεί να ξεκολλήσεις σαν σκύλος. Χιλιάδες πράγματα, όπως έγινε έξω στη Λαμία, που σας είχα πει κάποτε, επάνω στον τάφο, επάνω στο μάρμαρο, και έγινε χειρουργική επέμβαση. Και βλέπετε πως ο Θεός δεν βάζει το χέρι του, διότι είναι σπλαχνικός, διότι μακροθυμεί, διότι περιμένει την επιστροφή και τη μετάνοια του ανθρώπου. Ο Θεός αγαπά τον άνθρωπο και δεν θέλει την απώλειά του. Αν ανά πάσαν στιγμή έβαζε τη δικαιοσύνη στο χέρι του, δεν έπρεπε να υπάρχει άνθρωπος εις τον κόσμο. Ποιος είναι ο αναμάρτητος; Ποιος είναι εκείνος που δεν ήρθε αντιμέτωπος της δικαιοσύνης του Θεού;
Το δεύτερο να του πεις, ότι αυτό δεν είναι δικό σου. Του φώναξε η συνείδησή σου. Αλλά της έδωσες μια καρπαζιά και της λες: «Κάτω, κυρά συνείδηση». Έτσι δεν είναι; Το κάνεις σε όσες περιπτώσεις. Περνάς από τον δρόμο και βλέπεις του άλλου τα αχλάδια, τα πορτοκάλια, τα λεμόνια και απλώνεις το χέρι σου και κόβεις. Πώς θα ήθελες εσύ, όταν δεις στο δικό σου περιβόλι κάποιος άλλος ή κάποιοι άλλοι να κάνουν το ίδιο; Θα ήθελες να σου το κάνουνε; Δεν θα ήθελες. Εσύ γιατί το κάνεις; Πήγες στο γραφείο και εργάζεται ο κύριος τάδε, που έχει τα παιδάκια και λοιπά. Εσύ τον ξεμυαλίζεις και παίρνεις τον πατέρα των παιδιών. Θα ήθελες να σου το κάνουνε εσένα; Ήταν άφραγκη. Εσύ παίρνεις τη γυναίκα του αλλουνού και παίρνεις τη μητέρα των παιδιών του άλλου. Θα ήθελες να σου το κάνουνε; Όχι. Γιατί το κάνεις;
Μνήμη, λοιπόν, του Θεού, η μνήμη του Χριστού, η μνήμη του Αγγέλου. Εδώ ο Άγγελος από την ημέρα που βαφτιστήκαμε μας συνοδεύει και παρευρίσκεται και γράφει όλες τις αμαρτίες. Μόνο στην αρσενοκοιτία κρύβει το πρόσωπό του. Είναι η σοδομική αμαρτία. Έριξε ο ουρανός και η γη πυρ και θείο και κατέκαυσε. Μόνο σε αυτή την αμαρτία, κατά τους Πατέρες. Σε όλες τις αμαρτίες, άλλες, είναι παρών. Αν, λοιπόν, λέγω, υπήρχε αυτός ο φόβος, ότι αυτή την ώρα που κάνω αυτό με βλέπει ο Χριστός, θα το έκανα; Άρα τις γυναίκες, παντασύθετες, ξεντυμένες μέσα στο δωμάτιό τους, που έχουν να ράψουν τα αντρικά τους και κοιτάζουν στον καθρέφτη κατά πόσο τους πηγαίνουν. Να ήταν η Παναγία μέσα, θα είχαν την τόλμη αυτό να το κάνουν;
Τη βγάζουν έξω την Παναγία. «Θα σε ειδοποιήσουμε όταν θα έχουμε ανάγκη. Ξέρουμε ότι είσαι και νοσοκόμα και υπηρέτρια και θα σε καλέσουμε. Τώρα κόπιασε μου έξω, γιατί εγώ ζω σε κόσμο». Θα πας με τον κόσμο. «Ζω σε σάρκα». Θα πας με εκείνον που έχει σάρκα, γιατί «ο σπείρων εις τη σάρκα, εκ της σαρκός θέλει θερίσει φθορά· ο σπείρων εις το πνεύμα, εκ του πνεύματος θέλει θερίσει αφθαρσία», λέγει ο Παύλος στους Γαλάτες. Είναι λίγα λόγια, αλλά πολύ ψαχνό. Δεν ξέρω πώς το πιάνετε εσείς το θέμα, πώς το βλέπετε, πόσο περιεκτικό. Θα αμάρτανε;
«Χαῖρε ἡνίκα τὴν ἀρετὴν πράττεις, ἀλλὰ μὴ ἐπαίρου». Να χαίρεσαι γιατί σε βοηθεί ο Θεός να κάνεις κάτι καλό, να πεις κάτι καλό, να πράξεις κάτι καλό, να προλάβεις ένα κακό, να θεραπεύσεις κάτι κακό, να χαρείς σε αυτό. Αλλά μη επαίρου. Γιατί να μην επαρθώ;
όλη αυτή η διαδικασία που υπάρχει στην Ορθόδοξο Εκκλησία, σκοπό έχει να κάνει τον άνθρωπο τέλειον. Δεν κάνει ημιτελείς ο Χριστός. Να τον κάνει τον άνθρωπο τέλειον. Όταν ο άνθρωπος, λοιπόν, δεν χρησιμοποιεί, περικόπτει από τον νόμο και πετάει ορισμένα ως περιττά: «Δεν χρειάζονται τα παιδιά, δεν χρειάζεται, όπως είπα, η εγκράτεια, η παρθενία, η εξομολόγηση, η Θεία Κοινωνία, το πολύ “Κύριε, ελέησον”. Το βαριέται και ο Θεός», όπως λέμε εμείς. Τι θα φτιάξεις; Άνθρωπο που μπορεί να σταθεί στη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών ή ένα έκτρωμα θα φτιάξεις; Ασφαλώς ένα έκτρωμα θα φτιάξεις, το οποίο δεν είναι κατάλληλο, δεν έχει τις ομοιότητες, δεν του μοιάζει, δεν θα είναι εικόνα του Θεού για τη λήψη. Έχετε δει ορισμένα σπιτικά, όπως τα λέγαμε, παιχνίδια των παιδιών;
