Summary
Trials permitted by God become blessings when borne gratefully, giving the faithful a martyr’s crown through patient participation in the Cross. Sins cannot be erased by charitable works alone but must be cleansed through repentance and sacramental confession to a priest, through whom Christ grants forgiveness. Even seemingly small sins require attention, since anger, lustful desire, and other inward roots can grow into grave transgressions.

This evening, allow me to continue.
I would like to continue with what we were discussing on the previous evenings, whether for the whole hour or half of it, drawing from the sayings of this holy man, Saint Kosmas.
In our last talk, as I see here from my notes, we said that the final counsel we considered was this: “The heirs of the door must suffer tribulation.” Those who have been born as descendants of the door, he says, must naturally undergo tribulation. But when we bear our tribulations gratefully, the curse is turned into a blessing for us. All this evil, suffering, disgrace, and so forth ultimately brings a blessing. And we said that when a person bears his temptation—not one he created through his own selfishness or carelessness, but one permitted by God—and bears that temptation, that cross, with gratitude, he receives a martyr’s crown.
He then speaks about something concerning the human conscience. Few people trust their conscience; few consult it; few admit that they have one; and fewer still keep it alive. What we call conscience is an embassy of God, sometimes in friendly territory and sometimes in hostile territory. When two nations, for example, come into conflict, they recall their ambassadors. But Christ never recalls from a person this ambassador called conscience, however fiercely that person may oppose Him.
Even the conscience of the person farthest from God, the most indifferent person, will speak to him at some point. It will find an opportunity to speak, no matter whether he draws arguments from Lenin, Marx, Kazantzakis, Nietzsche, or whoever else, telling himself that all these things are ridiculous and explaining one thing after another. Yet from the depths within him a quiet voice cries out: “What about our wrongdoing? Is it without blame? What you are doing is not right.” Of course, we reply with sayings such as, “That is how the world is,” and, “This is Paradise here and now.” But these are only aspirins we take to keep the conscience from crying out.
Its voice was given to remain awake, alive, and clear: to counsel a person, to commend what is good, and to cry “woe” over what is evil. If a person were willing to consult his conscience, he would advance far along the right path. After all, if conscience did not answer rightly, Paul would never have said: “Let each one examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” Speak with your conscience. Put the question to it properly, answer the question it sets before you, and then proceed. This is what this holy man has in mind when he says in his own words: “Keep your conscience as a lamp for your deeds.” If you wish to see whether your deeds are good,
take the lamp called conscience and shine its light upon them. Your conscience will tell you whether what you are doing is good or evil. “Keep your conscience as a lamp for your deeds, for good deeds bring honor, while evil deeds bring shame.” As we have said in other words, conscience often cries truthfully within us: “This is not right.” But our selfishness—because someone offended us, hurt us, or did this or that to us—produces the opposite result.
We find excuses for ourselves. A mother, for example, may be displeased with her son, her daughter, or someone else. Yet she has a duty. Her conscience—the voice of God—cries out that whatever they may do to her, she must love and forgive that person, not only as her child but as a person. Yet people do not do this. “Go away,” they say. No matter how many excuses she finds—“He offended me, he harmed me, he hurt me”—conscience will still rise up within her at some point and say: “No, God does not agree with this.” And if a person refuses to hear that quiet voice, one day he will stand face-to-face with God. A person must become the judge of himself—not of others, take care, but of himself.
“Resolve the violence done to your conscience.” If a person is willing to act according to his conscience—not a hardened conscience or a diseased conscience, but a conscience whose judgments agree with the Gospel—what does the Gospel say? “Love your enemy.” Where is that love? He does not show it; he says he cannot. Can your conscience tell you anything different? This is what it tells you. Yet you answer by explaining why you should not love your enemy. A woman once went to Holy Confession, and the priest told her: “My child, you must forgive; you must love,” and so forth. “Father,” she replied, “if they had done this to you, you would not forgive them either.” She made herself both judge and prophet, claiming to know what he would do. Why? Because her selfishness would not permit her to forgive. “If we judge ourselves,” he says, “the Judge is reconciled with us.”
Do you understand? Let us condemn ourselves, and the Judge is already reconciled with us. For the moment a person says, “I am at fault,” even if the other person is actually at fault, everything changes. The purpose of this life is not to obtain justice for ourselves here. It is to my benefit to say that I am at fault, even if the other person is at fault. If I were better, I would not have these temptations or these people around me. But because I am not good, I have satans near me rather than angels. Place the responsibility upon yourself, he says; accuse yourself. But we have reversed the order: we condemn others and see their faults. We become their judges, whether at once or afterward, as you all know. “Let us judge ourselves.”
“The Judge is reconciled with us.” The Judge, he says, has already begun to be reconciled with us. “For, being good, He rejoices when He sees sinners scattering their burden.” God, being good, rejoices when He sees a sinner wishing to cast off sin, drive it away, and be free of it. God rejoices and hastens to help and comfort him. Perhaps there is even among us a serious gentleman who had a family dispute that could not be resolved and could not even be discussed. He went to a spiritual father, now departed, who said to him: “Listen. Regardless of whether they are at fault, you cannot receive Holy Communion unless you yourself go and ask forgiveness.
“Am I the one who must go and ask forgiveness?” “You will go and ask forgiveness. The other man will not; Satan is holding him there. You must go and ask forgiveness.” Do you understand the struggle? “I must go? And how can I go? He will insult me; he may strike me; he may do this or that.” The man struggled—I am telling you this as a real and coherent account—he truly struggled. At last he reached the other man’s shop to say, “I have come to ask your forgiveness.” But as soon as the other man saw him, he thought he had come to take revenge, harm him, beat him, or kill him. He immediately grabbed a boy who was there and began shouting. The first man fell to his knees and said: “I did not come for that, for God’s sake. I came to ask your forgiveness.” And what happened? Everything was turned around, and the other man cried out: “You are asking me for forgiveness, when we are the ones who harmed you—and your wife,” and so forth.
Thus something was accomplished that no scheme could ever have achieved, because the man humbled himself and did what his spiritual father had told him. Do you know how many disputes would be settled, how many people would be reconciled and come to love one another, and how many would depart for the other world set free, if only they did what conscience and Holy Scripture tell them? For conscience does not oppose Holy Scripture, nor does Holy Scripture oppose conscience. Someone may say, “How could I do that?” Ask God for the strength to do it. Unfortunately, many of us no longer have a functioning conscience. Yet remember what can happen when a thermostat breaks: the heating boiler may explode, or the same may happen with any other device controlled by a thermostat.
In a car, the engine and everything else may burn because the thermostat has failed. Woe to the person who has hardened his conscience—woe to him! Do you know what conscience is like, my beloved? It is like a spring. If you keep drawing water from it, clear water continues to flow, ever more abundantly. But if you pile rubble over it again and again, the spring is still underneath, and you can hear something stirring below, yet scarcely a drop reaches the surface. This is why some people, though the expression is not quite accurate, are called “conscienceless.” To be conscienceless means that you have become hardened and dead, cut off from God, who illumines what is right and what is truly for your own good. I once gave you another example about a man who owned a country restaurant.
During the night, his dog kept barking down by a certain post. But the man wanted peace and quiet, and the dog’s barking annoyed him. He went out onto his balcony and shouted at the dog, “Be quiet!” The dog cowered and fell silent. The man went back to bed, but the dog soon began barking again, running around the fence and barking. The man came out once more and shouted, “Be quiet!” Again the dog fell silent for a little while. But shortly afterward it began again. The man became angry, took his double-barreled gun, went downstairs, and shot the dog dead. The dog did not bark again, and the man slept peacefully until morning. But when he arose, he found that the shop below had been broken into. The dog had seen strangers prowling outside, people unknown to its master.
It had been warning its master: “Wake up; do not sleep.” But because the man did not want to hear that voice, he killed his conscience, and then thieves robbed him. So it is with the many people who neither listen to nor consult their conscience. Paul says in Romans that many will be judged by their conscience: some by the law, others by the law and the Gospel, and others by conscience. From the moment God created man, He placed this little voice within him, this constant “bark, bark, bark,” saying: “This is not right.” Take a cat that has eaten the fish. What does it do when it sees its mistress? It runs away. It turns, sees her, turns again, and flees. Why? “Now I am going to be beaten,” it thinks. Even the cat understands that it has done wrong.
O man, you who have gone to the moon, do you not know that it is a sin to do such things? To dishonor another man’s wife, to take another woman’s husband away from her and her children, to dishonor another man’s sister, to steal, to cheat, and all the rest—do you not know? Do you not have even a little cat within you that cries out and understands? You do, but you deliberately tell it, “Be quiet!” It will fall silent, yes; there will be silence. But afterward we ourselves will be crushed. This is what the holy man is saying. Let no one say, “I did not know the Gospel; I did not know the Lord’s Prayer.” We all know that good is good, and we all know that evil is evil. How can you be afraid of a cockroach, yet kill your own child in cold blood without fear? How can you do it? What Beast behaves in such a way? Try to take a kitten from its mother, and she will claw your eyes out; or try to take a puppy from its mother.
Try to take a bear cub, or the young of any creature. How can you claim not to know this? Irrational animals know it, yet you and I do not? We do know, my beloved; we know. But deliberately we say: “Be quiet, Lady Conscience! And you too, Gospel—and You too, Christ! I will live as I please; I will live my own life.” Live it freely, then. But one day you will come here, and then we shall discuss these things. This, then, is what this saint says: if a person is willing to sit down and speak with his conscience—if he will, as they say, close his accounts, pray, and remember that God sees everything—then let him withdraw, sit alone, and speak with himself. His own self, his conscience, will tell him what evil things he has done and what good things he has done. Write down all the evil things—not the good ones, but all the evil—and then go. Thank you.
Conscience is truth itself at work, helping a person. But as you know, for worldly, self-serving, fleshly, and selfish reasons, we disregard what conscience says. Yet conscience puts the Gospel into practice, for it never says anything contrary to the Gospel. Continuing, the saint writes: “If we have done anything defiling, let us wash it away through metanoia, through repentance.” There is no other way. Everything else can be washed with various kinds of detergent, but sins are washed only through repentance. Whatever concerns the body, which is material, is restored by material means.
Whatever concerns the soul is set right through spiritual means. Therefore, whether the stain a person bears is small or great—“if we have done anything defiling”—“let us wash it away through metanoia, through repentance.” There is no other way. Many people say: “I will build a church, provide a chandelier, help an orphan, or do some other good deed, and in that way I will cover my sins.” Sins are not covered—not one of them. If you wish to receive the reward even for a cup of cold water drawn from the tap and given to another person, first see to the matter of your sins through repentance and Holy Confession. Do not go and confess to an icon; the icon already knows, but it cannot answer you. Nor should you confess directly to God Himself,
Nor should you confess directly to Christ Himself, because Christ does not forgive sins directly in that way—nor does God, nor the icons, nor the Most Holy Theotokos, nor the saints. You must go to your spiritual father, to the priest, and then Christ will forgive you through the priest. Was Christ in the world or was He not? Were there lepers in the world or were there not? There were. For every illness He provided physicians. Sirach writes in chapter 38: “Give the physician his place, for the Lord created him also. The Lord created medicines from the earth.” Physicians and medicines. But leprosy was different. For leprosy, He did not tell the physicians what to do; rather—
the priests were to pronounce judgment concerning leprosy. Leprosy is a type of sin, teaching by extension that, when it comes to your sins, you must put matters right through the priests. If you wish, read chapters 13 and 14 of Leviticus. There you will see Christ as Hippocrates, Christ acting as the physician and giving prescriptions: if the wound looks like this, if it is deep, if the hair is yellow, if it is red, and so forth. They were to be purified and removed from the community and the land, so that others would not be infected. Thus, it was the clergy—the priests—who pronounced judgment concerning leprosy. As you know, Christ encountered ten lepers and healed them. How did He heal them? “Go,” He said, “show yourselves to the priests.” But are You not the Lawgiver? “I am, but I work through them.”
“Give us the certificate Yourself.” No; the certificate must pass through them. “I have appointed them, and you must go to them.” If Christ acknowledged the clergy of the Old Testament—if He acknowledged the priests and did not cast them out or set them aside, as we say, in order to grant healing directly and issue the certificate allowing the cleansed leper to return freely—would He now set aside today’s priests? Those Old Testament priests sacrificed bulls and calves, yet Christ did not set them aside. He acknowledged them and said: “He who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” Whoever does not acknowledge you does not acknowledge Me; he is an Antichrist. And whoever does not acknowledge Me, who have appointed you and bear with you, does not acknowledge My Father and does not have the Father either.
Therefore, there is no other way. That is where you must go. Do you want to wash away your sins? Choose priests whose Holy Orders are valid. To them Christ has given the authority to bind and to loose. You know this clearly from what we read in chapter 20 of John. On the first evening after Christ had risen, while “the doors were shut,” He stood in their midst and, even before Pentecost, gave them the special grace of binding and loosing. “Receive the Holy Spirit.” And He breathed upon them—He breathed upon them. Read John and see. For what purpose? “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” That is the matter. Only in this way can a person put his affairs in order. Yes, it is Christ who forgives, but through the priest. For the Orthodox priest does not act as the Catholic priest does, saying—
“I forgive you.” No. What does he say? “O Lord, whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed, and whatever you bind shall be bound. Loose, therefore, this servant of Yours.” To whom does he speak? “O Lord.” The priest is simply an instrument—and would that he were like a clean, galvanized wire; he would desire that for his own sake. But even if the wire is rusty, as many are, the Mystery still takes place. No one has any excuse to say, “The priest failed me, the bishop failed me, this person failed me.” I know nothing of that. What I know is that God ordains them all and works through them all, as a man of God has said. That is what I know. The priest may not be written in God’s book as worthy of the priesthood, but in his person I see God’s authority, just as in the person of a police officer I see the authority of the state.
The officer may be corrupt; I do not know what he may be. But when he displays the cross-belt and puts on the ribbon—the ribbon with its blue edge—I know that he acts on behalf of the state. If I resist him, I will have the state itself against me. That is what I know, and therefore I respect him. This, then, is what the saint says here: “If we have done anything defiling, let us wash it away through metanoia, through repentance.” Repentance and confession put the matter right. We must—we are obliged to do so. “For we must carry the image across in purity.” We have an obligation to preserve the image—the image of His ineffable glory—in purity, because a defiled image cannot reach Heaven. This is especially so because our Church teaches that a person sins in word, in deed, and in thought, and drinks—
sin like water, as Job says. And, as Job also says, a human being born of woman cannot be without sin. Even if a person’s life upon the earth lasts only one day, that person is still sinful. This is why, in the funeral service for each person, the Church offers a beautiful plea, pressing her supplication before God. The Holy Spirit speaks through David in Psalm 118.
So he says here that if, for one reason or another, we defile the soul, we are obliged to cleanse it. We must preserve it in purity, so that it may reach the place where purity dwells, because only the pure enter the Kingdom of Heaven. For this very reason, Christ makes them white in His Blood. This is precisely why Holy Communion is necessary: it is “for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.” It is the Blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses us from every sin. Holy Communion is not merely something given so that we may wish someone “many years.” Nor is it cola, a little golden tooth, or a little bit of honey, as mothers blasphemously tell their children before the Holy Chalice.
It is the Body and Blood of Christ, which cleanses us from every sin. Blessed is the person who receives Holy Communion—not, I would say, a hundred times a day, even if that were possible, but as often as he possibly can. For, according to Basil the Great, to receive Holy Communion continually means to live continually. That is how Basil the Great interprets it. The more often a person comes into contact with God, the better, more alive, and purer that person will remain. There is no other way for sins to be cleansed. Repentance and confession wash and scrub the soul, the first and second washing; and the Blood of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion—
removes every stain and makes the human soul white. Blessed is the person who understands this and seeks, by these means and in this way, to cleanse his sins. Let him no longer be deceived into thinking that all the good works he performs will cover his sins. No. You will lose the reward of your good works, and your sins will remain. But if you surrender your sins through repentance and confession, they will be forgiven; then you will also receive the reward for the good works you have done. I continue. He next says something similar: “Before we are stripped bare, let us heal the wounds of the soul with tears.” Before we are stripped bare—that is, before we are uncovered and stand naked and wounded before God. For now we are clothed and able to hide ourselves.
Do you know how many Christians are living in fornication? How many adulterers, prostitutes, thieves, liars, dishonorable people, profane people—how many who live like dogs? Do you know what is happening? God knows what is happening around us, beside us, and within us. God alone knows. But one day everything will be uncovered, and the wounds will be exposed. Today we conceal them in various ways. We invent excuses, we act as hypocrites, we cover ourselves, we become Pharisees, and we lead double lives. People regard us as saints, while in the sight of God we are demons—and even worse than demons. Therefore, before you are stripped bare, before you are uncovered and your nakedness is revealed, “let us heal the wounds of the soul with tears.” Weep!
The other day, when we spoke about prayer and tears in another passage from this saint, we devoted an entire lesson to the subject. “Let us heal them with tears, so that we may escape the medicines of the scourge.” For if God applies His medicines to those wounds, the pain will make you bite the iron. By “medicines,” he means punishments. If you want to escape having your wounds cauterized by the justice of God, then attend to them now: humble yourself, weep, change your way of thinking and your way of life, and put the matter right. As I see it, the saint persists in trying to awaken our conscience, so that it will speak and we will be willing to settle the affairs of this present world here and now.
Unfortunately, such people are found even among the religious. I am not speaking about those hearing these things for the first time. I am not speaking about those who remain far away, look down on these things, and regard them merely as part of the establishment. Nor am I speaking about people who do not know whether God or death dwells within them and imagine they are speaking with some little button inside themselves. I am speaking about those who struggle to attend to every detail of their souls—to their sins, both small and great. For even small sins can condemn us, while great sins cast us into Tartarus. Let no one deceive himself by pointing to another person’s sins, perhaps that person’s very great sins, as an excuse not to confess his own small ones. A traveler was once asked, “What was the—”
“most difficult thing you encountered during your five-year journey? When did you face your greatest hardship?” Do you know what he answered? “When fine sand got into my shoes and I could not walk. I endured everything else,” he said, “but I could not endure that.” Small sins are exactly like that in the feet of a Christian journeying toward eternity. Perhaps you have heard—or perhaps it has happened to you—of a worker who got a tiny metal shaving in his eye. He began to hurt, to cry out, and to weep, but he could not remove it. When he went to the hospital, they used a magnifying lens—
trying to locate it, but they still could not find it. Only a magnet was able to draw it out. It could not be seen at all, yet the man was suffering. Sins are exactly like this, even when they are small. And remember: a ship does not have to be loaded with great boulders in order to sink. If it is loaded with sand, it will sink just the same.
A small sin can become the cause of a great one. “It was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder.’” But I tell you, Christ says, do not even become angry. Your anger and mine are the root of murder. “It was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’” But I tell you: guard your eyes. Do not look wickedly at a woman or at a man, for such a person “has already committed adultery in his heart.” “But I did not actually do anything.” Yet you wanted to. We are double-hearted.
We think this is nothing. Yet the saying is clear: the eyes too are under the law. How could they not be under the law when they look unlawfully? They do look unlawfully. Do not laugh, or we shall have still more things to answer for. In any case, this is what the saint is telling us here. It is difficult, of course, but it depends upon us. Christ greatly desires us to have neither spot nor wrinkle. Does Holy Scripture not tell us how Christ desires His Church to be? This is why He gives His Blood. Christ gives His Blood to make a person clean—to make him as Naaman the Syrian was when he emerged from the Jordan after immersing himself seven times. What was he like before? He was a leper!
Understand what Naaman the Syrian, the commander, had been like. But when he emerged after his seventh immersion in the Jordan, his skin became like the skin of a little child. It was as though you were holding a soft, tender infant in your arms. That is what the skin of this former leper became. In exactly the same way, the Blood of Christ heals the leprous and enslaved soul, together with a person’s repentance and confession. Do you know what consoling words the divine John Chrysostom gives us? He says that if a tailor wishes to mend something, no matter how skilled he is and how invisible he tries to make the repair, if you examine it carefully, you will still discover where—
the garment was mended. And if a surgeon performs an operation and tries to make the incision as fine as possible so that no scar remains, careful examination will still reveal a scar. But when the grace of the Holy Spirit and the Blood of Jesus Christ come and do their work, no one can discern that there was ever a wound there, or that there was ever a sin. The person becomes new. This is why we must become a new creation—truly new, a new human being. And the person himself sees that a change has taken place within him. Before Christ—
I do not mean merely 1,976 years before Christ. For each of us who now lives as a practicing Christian, there is a personal date that marks our own “before Christ,” and that date differs from one person to another. My own “before Christ” lasted until 1950, when I repented and returned—when I came back to Christ. Someone else returned in 1960, so his “before Christ” was everything before 1960. Another returned only last year; that was his “before Christ.” Before Christ, every person defiled and blackened himself and did all manner of things without understanding whether he was sinning or not. Fashion demanded it, or respectable society demanded it, because he had ruined his conscience until its voice was lost among the icebergs. Fashion spoke, the world spoke, the flesh spoke, self-interest spoke, the ego spoke, and the devil spoke.
Conscience, Christ, and the Gospel did not speak within him. He loved one thing and hated another. He loved what was ugly and hated what was good. But when he returned and began to live after Christ, he saw within himself that he was beginning to pay no attention to the things he had once loved, while he began to care about the things he had hated and ignored. What had happened? Something had changed within him. Someone else had entered and taken the reins of his soul. He had put spectacles on his eyes, because the eyes do not see by themselves; they are instruments, and they see according to the state of the soul. If the soul is wicked, the eyes see wickedly. They look at one person or another and judge them by their faults. The same is true of the intellect. Even if wallets are not left open, it finds its way into them, because it is wicked, though they are closed. But these instruments, depending on whether they have within them the devil or...
the grace of the Holy Spirit, see according to the way a person thinks and lives. A wicked man, for example, sees something harmful in everything you are seeing at this moment. His mind follows a crooked path: “They must be over there now, saying such things—don’t tell me otherwise.” He is here, yet he may exaggerate and imagine that others are somewhere else saying things about him. Envy follows a crooked path, you see. But if a person who has been born anew examines himself, he will see that something different is now happening within him—a great ferment. If he could hear what is happening inside, he would hear pickaxes and pistols at work, tearing down an old world and building a new one. He himself is amazed: “Me? Am I going to fast? Am I going to confess? Am I going to kiss a priest’s hand? Me?” Yes, you. It is you—and now you are doing it.
The first one, who would not let you do these things and who led you elsewhere, has gone; now the second has entered. The good housewife has come in and begun setting everything in order. You see someone on the road and remember, “Ah, I cheated that man out of a hundred drachmas,” and you go and give him back the hundred. Or the thought strikes you: “The preacher is speaking about me tonight. What are you doing? Everything he said was said about me.” All this is the good housewife who has managed to gain a foothold within you and has begun putting the house in order. Everyone experiences this and knows it. In this way a person puts his affairs in order, so that his conscience will no longer accuse him. And when conscience does accuse him, what then? Even if what is required is a sacrifice, even if it feels as though his hands and feet were being cut off, he must seek deliverance. What did Christ tell you? “If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out.” That is, perhaps you have a house in which you live, but it was acquired unjustly; it is...
possibly unjustly yours. Choose to live outdoors and die on the pavement rather than go with that house into Hell. Perhaps there is someone with whom you are living who holds the place of your right hand because that person has an income and supports you. Choose to die tonight and be eaten by dogs rather than go with that person into Hell. Christ explains this; Christ has said these things, yet you remain deceived. “Lord, where?” In the Scriptures. If a person were willing not merely to read, but to study the foundations laid down in the Scriptures concerning these matters, things would be different. He would neither accuse God nor be lost himself. This is what this holy man teaches about these matters. A little further on he says something similar, introducing it with a brief preface.
The freer a person is, the more easily he can strike at these things; you know this yourselves. “I have so much baggage—where can I go? I cannot move.” There are people who have a great deal of baggage in this world and remain stuck where they are, because they do not want to abandon certain so-called good things of this world. And he gives the following example.
Consider this: can someone whose hands are tied walk as freely as another person whose hands are free to swing as he goes? In the same way, those who travel the paths of virtue are hindered in this life.
He says that those who travel this road of virtue find the journey difficult if they are bound by certain weaknesses. “They cannot complete it freely and unhindered”; they cannot walk easily. They must “hate sin,” he says. They must distance themselves from sin and be freed from sin and from the weaknesses of this world if they wish to walk freely toward the Kingdom of Heaven. Take an eagle. When it is free, it is the king of the skies. But tie a piece of iron to its feet, and even the eagle can do nothing. Every sin has the same effect on a person.
A person can soar and reach his rest, the place where he is destined to go, because each of us has a place waiting for him in Paradise, and whether he reaches it depends on him. “Make me a citizen of Paradise, the homeland for which I long.” This is the place for which man was created. If he chooses to lose himself along the paths of sin, he will go “to the devil and his angels.” But if he chooses to obey and struggle in this world as far as he is able, with Christ’s help, he will go to the Kingdom of Heaven like a royal child, to inherit the Kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world. Thus this holy man teaches that anyone who is bound—one by the flesh, another by self-interest, another by fashion...
another by the world, and others by all kinds of circumstances—will not be able to travel this road of virtue easily. But if a person is willing to break these bonds and become free... When people are about to climb, do they load themselves down heavily? When they set out to climb a mountain, the less they carry—and, as far as possible, the more completely unburdened they are—the more easily they can climb and reach the summit. This is what monasticism does, for example. Monastics leave behind the world, family, money, the ego—everything.
We must not bind ourselves through friendships whose bonds we cannot break, so that we are then compelled to sin in the flesh, to play cards, to drink wine, to go to the café and waste our time and money, to smoke, and so forth, for fear that otherwise we will cease to be “sociable.” Oh, society demands very ugly things of us before it will count us among conventionally sociable people! But we are not going to remain here. At some moment a hook comes for us and snatches us away—from our company, from a park bench, from a café, a cinema, a billiard hall, or a nightclub. Somehow or other, that hook seizes us. And what do we do then? Other people are bound by money. That too is something formidable—a great wound and a powerful force. Not everyone is capable of possessing money without becoming attached to it.
Money can be a force for good, but it also has destructive power. Some people are lost and sink in this world because of its material things. It is said that there was once a shipwreck. More than five hundred stars of the modern world were aboard that ship—people from Hollywood. Among them was a great celebrity. When everyone began running for safety, they left everything on the ship, took to the boats, and jumped into the sea, one holding a plank, another an inner tube, another a life jacket, and so forth. But this woman had several very expensive coats, so she put them on, one over another, hoping to take them with her. Those coats caused her to sink and drown. Afterward, those who had survived were asked about her.
“Wasn’t she a swimmer? How did this happen?” She could not swim because she had loaded herself down so heavily; that is why she sank. I have read another story as well. There was another shipwreck, and one man was transporting gold—sixty or seventy kilograms of it. He took the sack of gold with him and, in his madness, tied it to his belt. He thought he would carry it ashore as though it were a gourd. The result was that he sank, and the sharks ate him. They did not eat the gold, but they ate him. This is what the holy man is saying. How many people neglect church and curtail their prayer every day because of the things of this world? They must prepare this, arrange that, and make a good appearance. Yes, we have a house and all the rest, but we also have Paradise. Let the house remain as it is. “But people will think badly of me.”
That depends on the other person; it does not depend on you. If he is good, he will judge you leniently. If he is malicious and comes to inspect your house, he will find faults no matter how beautifully you have cared for it. A monk once visited a man and found everything arranged with the utmost care. A logismos—an intrusive thought—said to him, “If this man cleans so thoroughly and takes such care of this place, he must be neglecting prayer.” But the monk did not accept the thought. When he left, he answered it and said, “Glory to God, that this man considers it his duty to keep everything so clean, to care for the holy icons in his home, and to take care that his soul may go undefiled to Heaven.” That was his answer. Then he went on.
He visited another man and found everything in complete disorder—the frying pan, for example, on the bed, the pillow somewhere else, things spilled about; who knows what else was lying there. He said nothing. He sat down, greeted the man, and when he left, a logismos—an intrusive thought—said to him, “What a filthy man! What a...” But the monk accepted none of it. “Get behind me, Satan. If this man keeps things this way, it must mean that he is indifferent to them and detached from this world, so that he may devote himself to the service of his God and to prayer.”
He answered both logismoi, both intrusive thoughts. But we are wicked. We are wicked, and we find faults where we could have found something good and offered a different judgment. If a person seeks to preserve his inner peace, nothing will disturb him. So never allow yourselves to be swept away by the affairs of this world. How many people, because of the world, become so bound that they fail to perform their duties? How many serve non-fasting food on Wednesday or Friday, or during a fasting season, because guests have arrived and they fear being misunderstood? They are bound by the world and have no strength to break their bonds and speak plainly. How many other women and men become entangled in various situations of this world, remaining bound here below and unable to soar toward the Kingdom of Heaven? It is true that there are many difficult circumstances. Some souls hearing these words may be troubled and say inwardly, “Ah, Panagopoulos, if only you knew my situation.”
Let me answer you as I have answered in other cases. It is true that, through ignorance and carelessness, we have created such problems and brought about situations in which, as we say, there is a cliff before us and a torrent behind us. For many people, their problems and circumstances—family, personal, emotional, moral, and so forth—seem insoluble. Neither the human nous, the spiritual intellect, nor the human hand can untangle them. They are, as the saying goes, a Gordian knot: everyone comes, examines the matter, and passes it by. Finally, when Alexander was confronted with the Gordian knot, he said, “What cannot be untied must be cut.” He drew his sword and cut the Gordian knot by force.
But today we have no need of Alexander the Great. We have Jesus Christ crucified. Christ came at a difficult moment, carrying the Cross up to Golgotha. He fell three times and could no longer carry His Cross, just as we cannot carry ours. But Simon of Cyrene was found and compelled to carry it, and the Cross reached the summit. Here we have our Alexander the Great: Jesus Christ. “Lord, as You know, this and that has happened to me. I created this situation; others did not create it for me. Even if others did, I created it too. My sins created it; my pride created this Cross, this Gordian knot. I beg You, untie it. You who brought life out of the tomb, who brought the Resurrection out of death...
You who brought me from non-being into being, I place my situation in Your hands. Resolve it, and deal also with the other person involved.” If Christ resolves it, He can do so in a single night. But unfortunately, we have not turned to Him. We have not humbled ourselves or accepted responsibility for the situation, so that it might be put in order and we might be set free to soar, as this holy man says, toward that rest which Christ has prepared. I pray that all the world, and we ourselves, may attain it. Amen.

η χάρη του Πνεύματος του Αγίου, κατ' αναλογίαν βλέπουν, όπως θεωρεί και ζει. Ο πονηρός, παραδείγματι, βλέπει το βλαβερό σ' ό,τι βλέπετε αυτή την ώρα. Λοιπόν, είναι καμπύλης τροχιάς, θα είναι εκεί τώρα, θα λένε αυτά και δεν μου λες εμένα. Είναι εδώ, κι άλλος μπορεί να υπερβάλλει, κι αυτοί στον έτσι ότι υπήρχε εκεί πέρα και λένε αυτά τώρα. Είναι καμπύλης τροχιάς ο φθόνος, βλέπετε έτσι. Αν λοιπόν εξετάσει ο άνθρωπος ο αναγεννημένος, κατ' αναλογίαν δει ότι μέσα του τώρα κάτι άλλο γίνεται. Ένας οργασμός. Δηλαδή αν μπορούσε να μιλήσει ο άνθρωπος, θα άκουγε μέσα του κασμάδες, πιστολέτα να δουλεύουν, να γκρεμίζουν έναν παλιό κόσμο και να χτίζουν ένα καινούργιο. Και ο ίδιος παραξενεύεται. «Εγώ; Εγώ να νηστέψω; Εγώ να εξομολογηθώ; Εγώ να ασπαστώ χέρι παπά; Εγώ;» Εγώ, εσύ είσαι, και πού το κάνεις τώρα;
