Summary

Saint Nilus of Sinai warns that the impious person remains in darkness while others repent and return to God. Virtue merits a crown and sin incurs condemnation precisely because human choices are voluntary rather than dictated by nature or necessity. Saint Nilus finally warns the lawless that every heartbeat carries each person toward death and judgment, where Christ will judge with perfect justice.

Those of you who were with us for our last talk will remember that we were speaking from the wisdom of this holy man from Mount Sinai, Saint Nilus of Sinai. We said that, as he continues the subject, the Saint sets forth about ten woes and ten beatitudes. And, if I remember rightly, I said that we should not break up the subject, so we stopped five minutes early. Now, then, I have before me the woes. As you know, our Lord pronounced eight woes.

They were addressed to the Scribes and Pharisees, the hypocrites. The woes here are different: they concern sin and the person who remains in sin. Anyone who wishes can find the Lord’s woes in chapter 23 of Matthew. The first woe pronounced by this holy man is: “Woe to the impious.” Alas, he says, to the impious man. “When everyone else is being illumined, he alone is darkened.” All the others open their eyes, repent, and return; but instead of being illumined, he grows darker and remains in sin.

A person must understand that, whether he wants it or not, one day he will stand before God and give an account. Both the devout and the impious will stand before God. And God will say to the impious man: “Why did this other man become devout? Did the sun rise from somewhere else for him? Was there no Satan for him? Was there no world for him? Did he have no flesh? Was there no evil, hard stone in his path? Was there none of this? Then how did he become devout?” So that is not the issue. Why did you remain impious? You remained impious because your disposition was evil. You would not lay aside your ego.

You would not accept the truth and humble yourself. You fashioned your own little religion and shifted the blame onto everyone except yourself. Therefore he says, “Woe to the impious—woe!” When everyone else is being illumined—when so many people are returning and turning back—you remain where you are and grow darker. For you know, the farther one person advances toward the light, the farther the other remains toward the darkness. He is left behind. Do you understand? They ought to have been traveling together, yet one advances while the other remains behind. In other words, he grows darker and falls under greater condemnation. There is no excuse. You know, many people search for explanations. Through a thousand and one sophistries, they try to escape the one responsibility that is truly theirs:

the fact that they themselves are responsible. One asks why evil exists; another asks why Satan exists; another asks why God does not simply place us all in Paradise. What are these questions? They are a couple of notions that people imagine will serve them and provide an answer to their conscience, which is always crying out within them. But God created man with free will—free to remain devout or become impious. It is in his own hands. It depends on him. It does not depend on God, on Satan, on sin, or on the flesh. It depends on the person himself. For when a person does not consent, Satan can do nothing. Satan is powerless; he cannot compel him. Satan merely dictates. If the person wishes, he adds his signature.

If the person does not wish it, then no matter how much Satan dictates, he cannot lead that person into sin; the person remains illumined rather than darkened. On this matter of the human will and man’s free choice, which makes him guilty or innocent, Basil the Great says: “The soul possesses free will.” The soul is free and holds the decision in its own hands. “The devil has the power to make suggestions.” He can make suggestions. He acts as a prompter, reminding a person of the flesh, the world, personal advantage, pleasure, and the ego.

“He has the power to make suggestions.” He is free to cast some evil and wicked logismos—some intrusive thought—into you. “But he has no authority to compel you against your will.” He has no authority to force you when you do not consent. Many people ask, “Who can resist Satan?” Yet Satan merely brings something to your attention; he simply paints a scene within your mind to entice and lead you astray. If you wish, you accept it; he does not force you. In short, sin is committed today, and will continue to be committed until the end of the age, just as the first sin was committed. Satan did not seize Eve’s hand by force and say, “Pick it, eat it, chew it, swallow it.” No. He merely suggested it, saying, “If you take this, you will become God.” He says the same thing to people today: “If you do this, you will enjoy that; you will experience this or that.”

But he does not coerce us. He does not coerce us. And this great Father continues: “He depicts filthy pleasures for you in your thoughts.” He portrays lustful images among your logismoi, your intrusive thoughts; he forms and paints an image of fornication in your mind. “If you wish, accept it; if you do not wish, do not accept it.” If you wish, you accept the image; if you do not wish, you reject it. But we not only accept it; we even hurry, if possible, to put into action this vision he presents. For he is the finest painter in the world—there is no finer brush and no finer hand than Satan’s. He is the finest painter. Even if you are alone and enclosed in the desert, wherever you may be, he comes and paints images within your nous, your spiritual intellect, and often even in your sleep.

He says: “If you wish, accept it; if you do not wish, do not accept it.” “For if you committed fornication under compulsion”—if Satan forcibly made you commit fornication—who would be at fault? God would be at fault. Then why, he asks, did God create Hell? You would not be responsible if Satan forcibly drove you into sin. But because you consent—Satan merely sketches the image and you willingly embrace it—God has established Hell. And he continues: “Or if you were good by nature”—if you were naturally good, did good by nature, and were incapable of evil—“what rewards or crowns would there be?” What would God be doing? Why should He crown you, when you had no opportunity to do evil and did only good because you had been made solely for good? For man...

was created in such a state that he is free to choose either sin or goodness. Thus, if he commits sin, he is condemned; and if he practices virtue, he is praised. Basil the Great continues with another thought: “The sheep is gentle.” The sheep, he says, is gentle, “but it has never been crowned for its gentleness.” Have you ever heard of a sheep being awarded a crown because it is gentle? Why not? “Because its gentleness belongs to it not by deliberate choice, but by nature.” The sheep is made gentle by nature. That is why, he says, it has never received a crown. It did not struggle to become gentle or to remain gentle; it is gentle by nature. If you say that man is good and...

incapable of evil, then he is not entitled to a crown. And if he does evil under compulsion because Satan forcibly imposes it on him, then he should not be condemned to Hell. But Satan does no such thing. He merely reminds us, paints images for us, and makes suggestions; we then add our signature, and so forth. Basil continues: “Nothing done without deliberate choice is worthy of blessing.” No one can be called blessed for something involuntary—that is, for something that does not depend on him. Insofar as it depends upon my own free choice, I am blessed if I do good and condemned if I do evil. It depends on me. “For every virtue is marked by its voluntary character”; it depends upon the person’s disposition and will.

So at times we hold God or Satan responsible, supposedly in order to excuse ourselves. If we remain impious, we remain impious by our own will. And if we advance toward becoming devout, we willingly struggle to become devout. That is why in the one case we receive the crown, and in the other we receive Hell. The second woe pronounced by this holy man is: “Woe to the blasphemer, for his tongue is bound.” His tongue, he says, will be bound and unable to offer a defense. “And how will he defend himself before the Judge? He cannot.” I repeat: “Woe to the blasphemer.”

Alas to the blasphemous person. “For his tongue is bound.” His tongue is tied, and he cannot defend himself. “And how will he defend himself before the Judge? He cannot.” How can he justify having remained a blasphemer, having become a blasphemer, having lived as a blasphemer? On that day, the Saint says, he will have no excuse. Now, some who hear this firsthand—and others who will hear it second- or thirdhand through the recordings—immediately put themselves at ease. A comforting thought comes to them: “I, Glory to God, do not blaspheme.” But the matter is not as simple as it appears. I dare say that there is no one who is not a blasphemer. You may respond, “Would it not be better for my tongue to be cut out?”

May your tongue not be cut out. Understand the word I used: what does “blasphemer” mean? “Blasphemer,” “blasphemy,” and “to blaspheme” come from a compound word meaning to injure someone’s good name. It is not only the obscenity we hear in the marketplace—from the driver, the hooligan, our unbelieving father, our brother, or someone else. No! It is not only that. To blaspheme means to injure God’s good name. Take a married couple who refuse to have children. Is there any greater blasphemy than this? They ask, “But what am I doing to God? How am I blaspheming Him?” You blaspheme Him by claiming that He does not provide for you, that God cannot manage matters and has laid the whole burden upon you. You blaspheme God’s providence; you blaspheme God as though He were powerless.

If I say that He does not provide, I blaspheme Him. How can I do that when He says, “Behold, I have inscribed you upon My hands”—that He does not forget or forsake you? “Cast your care upon Him,” and He will set your affairs in order. Yet the person who does not trust Him, who calculates everything with pencil and paper, decides that he cannot make ends meet and throws the unborn child into the refuse bin—that person blasphemes God. He blasphemes God as Provider. God says, “I will neither leave you nor forsake you.” “Yes, but we also have taxes to pay. What are we supposed to do? We may even have to cheat in the weight and the measure, and so forth. You cannot accomplish anything nowadays with the Cross in your hand.”

Does the person who acts this way not blaspheme God? He blasphemes God by saying that His Gospel and His teaching are impossible to follow. He blasphemes God by claiming that some part of His teaching is no longer applicable today. Really? Is God’s teaching no longer applicable? God’s teaching most certainly is applicable. What are you injuring? God’s good name, by claiming that He has no power to help you in these difficult moments. Then Satan takes hold of you through this logismos, this intrusive thought, and you serve Satan while blaspheming God as Provider. Blasphemies are not limited to the insults we hear against the Most Holy Theotokos, our Lord, and the Precious Cross. Those are not the only forms. There are many other blasphemies. A mother with daughters says, “Do you expect suitors simply to walk into your home if you never open it to them? Where will you find a husband?” Have you not seen what Scripture says about divine providence? Has God not spoken?

“House and property are divided among children by their fathers, but a wife is joined to a husband by the Lord.” But you say, “Leave God out of it; He does not know. You must find him by yourself. You must find her by yourself. You must open your home and let him in. You must turn the house into a brothel, a place of corruption, so that she can find a husband”—only to suffer the next day. For if you examine the shipwrecks hidden behind so many marriages, you will find that their foundations were laid upon Satan, egoism, and human self-will. They were not laid by God. No. Blasphemy, then, takes many forms. And woe to the person who does not have complete trust in God and who injures any of God’s attributes or any part of His good name. A thousand and one examples could be given of what is being said here. Such a person, the Saint says, will have no words to offer.

Someone will say: “I am one of twelve children born to my mother, and my wife is one of twelve born to hers. How can I say, ‘I will have only one child’? How would that not blaspheme God? My mother and my other siblings would testify against me.” Of course, you did not have God’s help, did you? Where did all of you come from? Was He not God for you as well? Is He not the same God? Has His hand been cut off? Has anything changed? How, then, can I set Him aside? God is blasphemed when you push Him aside and do not ask Him. We were speaking about fasting a little earlier, and I have seen the questions pouring in here like rain. What makes a person reject it? This blasphemy against God. Did He not establish fasting? Is fasting not from God? Is there no Church? Does the Church not belong to Christ, to God? Can you have God as Father without having the Church as mother? You are mistaken, my dear friend. You must have the Church as your mother in order to have God as your Father; otherwise, you do not have Him.

God is Father, Christ is brother, and the Church is mother. She gives you new birth and feeds you at her breast with Holy Communion. She shelters and cares for you here on earth. She is the inn. There are, then, two broad kinds of blasphemy; it is not limited to the things we commonly hear, though of course we shudder at them. As the writer of Proverbs rightly says concerning sin in general, blasphemy is in a certain sense the most unjustifiable sin. It has no ground on which to stand. If I steal, I can say: “I was in need. My children were running about hungry; I felt sorry for those children and for my wife,” and so forth, “and so I stole. Besides, I had no clothes.” You may find something to tell yourself. Did I commit fornication? “Well, I was clothed in flesh; I was made of earth. I could not restrain myself; I could not manage it.” But for blasphemy there is...

no such excuse. I do not know whether you have noticed that when God gave the Law through Moses, He did not include a law concerning blasphemy. He did not. There were laws for the fornicator, the adulterer, and the liar; laws commanding respect for one’s father; laws for everyone. The Decalogue spoke of all these things, but it did not speak of blasphemy. Blasphemy, so to speak, is beyond all bounds. God did not even wish to discuss such a thing, because it ought never to happen. He wished to teach man: “I do not expect such a sin from you—the blaspheming of God.” What has God done to you? What has He done? Did the Most Holy Theotokos cut off your electricity? What sort of thing is this? A screw will not turn, a lock will not open, and you curse Christ. What has Christ to do with the key? What did He do to you? When has He ever wronged you?

Your car will not start, and you curse “the Cross.” What does that mean? Where does such a thing come from? How can it possibly be justified? What do these sacred names have to do with it, unless you say, “My Christ, help me start the car. My Most Holy Theotokos, help me. My precious Cross, help me”? Blasphemy is utterly unjustifiable. There is no room for it; it has no ground to stand on. And so, if you will permit me, I would tell you this tradition. When our Most Holy Theotokos departed this life and the Lord received her holy soul into His hands—as the Church teaches us in the words, “And, my God, receive my spirit”—we see in Byzantine icons the Lord standing above her holy body, holding a little child in His arms. This is the soul of His Mother, the soul of our Most Holy Theotokos. That is what the icon seeks to teach us.

Our Most Holy Theotokos succeeded in surrendering her soul to Christ. But who will receive our soul, and to whom shall we surrender it? It is said that angels were sent to minister to her and to take her to see the places of Hell where people are punished. She saw many different punishments. She asked, “What is this place?” “This is where the sexually immoral are.” “And what is that place?” “That is where such-and-such sinners are.” For every class of sinners she found some word to say, and she entreated our Lord to judge them with mercy: this one was clothed in flesh and was led astray; that one was hungry and stole; and so on. Then, it is said, she came to a place where she saw a great company of people hanging by their tongues, with their tongues drawn out. “And who are these?” she asked. “These are the blasphemers,” came the answer.

She bowed her head and moved on. She could find no word with which to entreat our Christ for those people. She had said something for everyone else, but for the blasphemers she said nothing. I told you earlier that no provision had originally been made concerning blasphemy. When someone first blasphemed—and Holy Scripture does not even use the word “blasphemed,” but says euphemistically, “he blessed God”—the man was a Jew. The Jews were left speechless and hurried to Moses, saying, “This is what has happened. We have no law concerning it, so what are we to do with him?” Moses prayed to God and asked how he should deal with this man, the first blasphemer of whom we read in Exodus. God told him that the man was to be stoned, and so the first blasphemer was stoned.

Yet today there are people who blaspheme, and who are even Orthodox Christians. I once asked a man, “Why do you blaspheme? Do you not believe?” He replied, “Do you think I am so stupid that I would blaspheme things I do not believe in? Do you think I am so stupid that I would blaspheme things that do not exist?” Just imagine the honor he thought he was paying them! In other words, he wanted to tell me that he blasphemed knowingly. So I say that many people here may fall into one category or the other. Let each person take care to see how he blasphemes God in his own way. Let him ask what it is that he refuses to entrust to God, and let him understand that in doing so he damages God’s good name. God foresees everything, holds everything in His hands, and orders every matter: those of the young and the elderly, the educated and the uneducated, merchants and the poor. He is always able to provide.

But look at the way a person treats God: he blasphemes Him to His face. “I take no account of You. I have not trusted You.” I would not want to pass over this lightly. There is one more thing that I have mentioned before, but since we are now speaking about blasphemy, I will return to it. It is something that arises even in Holy Confession. Some people are asked, “My child, do you ever blaspheme? Do you use blasphemous words?”

“Father,” the person says, “sometimes I may tell someone to go to the devil—to the one who is cast out, of course.” He claims that he does not blaspheme; he only sends someone to the devil. Please pay close attention to this point, because it concerns not only men but also women, and especially mothers who send their own children to the devil. If I were a spiritual father hearing such a confession...

I might ask, “Did you blaspheme Christ?” You might answer no. “Did you blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos?” You might answer yes. “Did you blaspheme this sacred thing?” You might answer yes. “Did you blaspheme that one?” Again, you might answer yes. Yet I would not impose as severe a penance for those things as I would if you had sent another human being to the devil. Let me take this opportunity to broaden the subject. Tell me, my friend, why did Christ come into the world? Why Great and Holy Friday? Why His Burial? Why did Christ endure all that humiliation? Did He not come to rescue humanity from the devil? That is why He came. He came to destroy the works of Satan and to overthrow the devil’s schemes. Is that not why He came? All His Passion, all of Great and Holy Friday, and all of Holy Week were endured for this purpose:

to snatch humanity away from the devil—the very devil to whom you send another person. There is no greater agent of Satan in the world than someone who sends another human being to the devil. Why do you not say, “Go to Christ, my child”? Why do you send that person to the devil? Have you heard how Satan defends himself on this point? He says, “Tell me, whom have we sent to ourselves? You are the ones who send people to the devil. You are the ones who send people to us.” That is what Satan says: “You send them to us.” A mother says, “Go to the devil, my child.” But was God not crucified for your child? Did He not sacrifice Himself for your child? And yet you want to send that child to the devil? Such a person becomes Satan’s finest agent and even has the audacity to do this—though, of course, often in ignorance.

Then in Holy Confession the person says, “No, I do not blaspheme. Sometimes I only mention the one who is cast out.” Yet such a person is a blasphemer. He blasphemes Great and Holy Friday, the precious Cross, the Most Holy Theotokos, Christ—everything. He blasphemes everything that brought about humanity’s salvation and deliverance from the devil, because he sends people back to that very devil. Do you understand? Pay attention to what I am telling you and examine it carefully. This is why this saintly man says that on that day there will be no excuse.

“I could not help it; I could not help it.” Nothing of the sort! There is no excuse in this case. If you read Proverbs, chapter 6, verse 22, you will see how a person is bound by his sins—especially by blasphemy—and goes rushing headlong toward Hell. This is why Saint Nilus says, “Woe to the blasphemer, woe! For his tongue is bound.” His tongue will be unable to speak or find any excuse. And how will he defend himself before the Judge? He cannot. He cannot find or invent an excuse; there are no mitigating circumstances for the blasphemer. Saint Nilus then gives the third “woe”: “Woe to the lawless man, for he is going to the Lawgiver, who is a strict and righteous Judge.” Woe to the lawless man, he says, because he is going before the Lawgiver, a Judge who is both strict and righteous. How long have I been speaking—about twenty-five minutes? Multiply that by sixty and you have 1,500 heartbeats. Even if I count only these beats of my heart, at sixty beats per minute...

Though in fact the heart beats seventy-five or eighty times a minute. This tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock is my journey toward Christ, toward my grave, toward my Judge—whether I want to understand it or not, whether I want to believe it or not. And it continues even as I speak. With every beat my heart carries me onward, step by step, toward the cemetery. No one is moving backward; we are all going in the same direction. It makes no difference who imagines himself powerful, intelligent, educated, or healthy. The heart keeps working. As the people say, its beating is the pounding of footsteps toward the cemetery. And at the end of that road stands the One whom Saint Nilus calls a strict and righteous Judge—righteous indeed. This ought to fill us with sober concern. As I have said before, God will not judge us according to sentiment, as we judge our own child, relative, wife, friend, or companion—someone with whom we eat and perhaps even sin. Beyond the grave, Christ no longer deals with us as the advocate of love, but as the Judge of righteousness. He is no longer gentle, but strict, just as Saint Nilus says. Beyond the grave He is no longer our advocate; He is our Judge.

A woman once buried her husband. Her husband had left many unresolved legal matters behind him, and a few days later her lawyer hurried to warn her. “Be careful, madam, because the situation is far from favorable. You should count yourself fortunate if you do not one day end up in prison; you are certainly in danger of losing your home.” That is what her lawyer told her. “When you have recovered a little from the funeral, come to my office so that we can see what can still be put right and settle certain matters, lest you be left homeless or even sent to prison one day.”

The woman, meanwhile, had another man in the house and went on enjoying her life. She ignored the lawyer’s warning and did nothing to put her affairs in order. Then one day summonses began arriving from every direction and at every door of the house. She gathered up all the papers and ran to the lawyer, remembering what he had told her. She went to his office, but she could not find him there. She asked the person who received her, “Is Mr. So-and-so not here? Is this not his law office?” “We do not know where he is now,” they told her. “He is away; he is not here.” In any event, the case finally came to court. She left carrying her bundle of notices, objections, and legal papers.

When she arrived in court, she met with a startling surprise: the judge presiding over the court was the very man who had once been her lawyer. He had been promoted and was now the presiding judge. When she saw him, she was filled with agitation, fear, shame, and yet also hope. She pushed through the crowd as best she could, trying to reach him before the court convened. She came up beneath the bench and said, “May I speak to you?” He stood and replied, “Yes?” She said, “You know, I am Mrs. So-and-so. You may not remember me, but my husband died, and you told me that I needed to settle all those matters and complete the necessary papers...

And today I will either be sent to prison or set free. Please help me.” He answered, “It is true, madam; I remember you. Yes, you are Mrs. So-and-so. I told you then to begin dealing with the case and to come so that we could put your affairs in order. You understand that at that time I was your advocate. Today, however, I am your judge, and I must administer justice.” This is what Christ is for this world and the next. In this world He is humanity’s advocate; in the world to come He is humanity’s Judge. This is precisely what this saintly man has grasped when he says, “Woe to the lawless man, for he is going before a Judge”—before a Judge, not an advocate—“a strict and righteous Judge.” He will not then act with the indulgence shown by the father of the Prodigal Son, who seized his son, covered him with kisses, and assured him, “I am here.”

God is also righteous. If you present God as love alone and enlarge only the aspect of His love, you take away from His justice. And a God who is not righteous cannot be God. He is God because He is equally good and equally righteous. If we enlarge only the aspect of love, we diminish the aspect of justice.

That is not how it is. Here we encounter His love, and there His justice. Moreover, because the Church knows that we human beings are partial in our judgments, when she presents the Judgment to us, she shows us how we will be judged. Go to a monastery or a church that preserves the historic Orthodox faith and its Orthodox iconographic tradition. Look above the door, where the scene of the Last Judgment is usually placed. It reminds each person as he leaves, “This is what awaits you outside; this is what lies ahead.” There you will see our Christ seated upon the throne. On His right is the one more honorable than the Cherubim, our Most Holy Theotokos, and on His left is the precious Forerunner. Before Him there is...

another throne like a table, and upon it lies an open Gospel. Beneath the Gospel hangs a cord, and from the cord hangs a set of scales weighing the faith and deeds of human beings. Angels place weight on one side, while demons pull from the other, trying to claim the person. But those scales, which represent the justice of God, are suspended from the Gospel. Go ahead and try to alter the Gospel—it cannot be altered. Even His enemies are confronted by that same Gospel. Thus we are taught that Christ will judge us according to the Gospel. He will not judge us according to sentiment. We want everyone to enter Paradise, so we immediately begin offering excuses: “But you do not know what a good person he is!”

Hell is full of “good people.” What it does not contain are true Christians. True Christians alone are not found in Hell. Ninety percent of those there may have been regarded as good people, because theirs were falls on the right—the deceptive appearance of virtue. How many “good people” remain far from Holy Confession, Holy Communion, fasting, and prayer, regarding all these things as unimportant? Let us therefore pay attention to these qualities of the Judge: He is strict and righteous. And notice how Saint Nilus concludes: “Woe to the lawless man, for he is going to the Lawgiver, who is a strict and righteous Judge.” The lawless man is going before the Lawgiver. For whom did God establish the law—for His angels, or for Himself? He established it for us. When someone disobeys the law of the state, what happens? Naturally, sooner or later, he is brought before justice. It is exactly the same here.

A person may not end up in prison here, but he will face justice there. In this life, cunning people sometimes manage to escape human justice, because the justice of this world is like a spider’s web in the corner: it catches the flies, but the wasps break free. That is how worldly justice works. But the justice of God catches everyone. The impious man, Saint Nilus says, is going before a strict and truly righteous Judge, who is also the Lawgiver. “Woe to the lawless man,” then—to the one who lives without law, who refused to accept the law of God, disregarded the Lawgiver, and trampled upon His commandments. Woe to him!

The fourth “woe” concerns a sin that, in one way or another, many people have: “Woe to the greedy man; his wealth departs, and the fire receives him.” “Woe to the greedy man.” Alas, he says, for the greedy man. His wealth departs; he cannot take it with him, and it will not receive him. Where his wealth once was, there is now the fire of Hell. And this is true. As we have said before—and indeed, we once devoted an entire evening’s talk to this subject and to this man—money is neither good nor evil in itself; it depends on how it is used. For as the divinely inspired John Chrysostom says,

John Chrysostom says, “If wealth were evil, he would not have directed us to the man who had 318 servants.” He would not have led us into the bosom of Abraham, who had no fewer than 318 servants, if wealth were evil. Secondly, he says that the proper use of wine is a hymn of praise to God. Wine is good when taken in due measure; God gave it to us because it serves a purpose. But if you misuse it, then by the same reasoning we ought to cut out the tongue that blasphemes. “Why did You give me this tongue, when it allows me to blaspheme You?” “I did not give it to you for blasphemy; I gave it to you for blessing. You use it to blaspheme, and that is why I will judge you.” The same is true of wealth. And so, he says, the greedy man, who in a certain sense unjustly...

He holds himself accountable, because instead of adding that money to his savings account, he ought to have given it toward another person’s need—to feed another person, to help in another person’s illness or weakness. But we do not fully believe that whenever we help someone, we bring a blessing upon what remains to us. Show me someone who became poor by giving alms, and I will bow down and kiss his hand. Never. Never—absolutely never. A man may have become poor through gambling, through dissipation, through revelry or fraud, and so on; but through giving alms, never. “The rich have become poor and gone hungry, but those who seek the Lord...”

“They shall lack no good thing.” In a mysterious way, God blesses the possessions of the person who is not grasping for more, who is content with what is necessary and gives his surplus to someone else in need. Yet we have not taken this to heart as deeply as we should. Many times we fail to understand it and work against it. For example, I had five children, not just one—and you know how much even one child requires. Saint Methodios... So, I had five children, and if, trusting in God, I could have refrained from securing the future of all five in order to meet the need of someone else, but did not do so, God will demand an account from me: “Why did I come there?”

I have to provide for my own children, to build apartments for them—not only for the girls, but for the boys as well. And then they might even give you a kick and send you flying out the window.

Hello! Why? Because he never once asked God how he should act in this situation. In your own thinking, he had property here and property there. He has a wall, iron railings, and even glass on top so that no one can get in. Yet there are all these children waiting for help from you too, so that they can earn their qualifications and get on their feet. There is so much we ought to do. The easiest thing is not simply to gather everything for myself, saying, “I have children.” Yes, many times you must live as though you had no children. Let your children work, just as you work, and help the person who is unable to work.

His mother, his relatives, this person, that person—everything. Around a believer, circumstances come together in strange combinations that human reasoning could never arrange. No mathematical skill can solve such matters. If only, in every situation, a person would kneel and say, “My God, how should I face this situation? This is happening here; I see that over there,” and so on. He would hear from the mouth of God that he must do strange and very difficult things. But instead he says, “That is not my concern.” Whatever advantage I gain for my own family in such a case will one day return to confront me as hardship. I do not see the other person as a brother, but as a stranger. “What is his name? He is not a Panagopoulos.” So I see him as a stranger. No, sir. You have the same mother: the baptismal font. Your mothers according to the flesh may be different, but in the Kingdom of Heaven, if you are a Christian, you have the same mother. You have the same brother, Christ, and the same Father, God. The less privileged man is your brother. Have you loosed the bonds of injustice…?

Something will come from that same thread. Christianity is strange, but Christianity is also beautiful. Yet why does a person act this way? Because he does not trust God. He blasphemes God by believing that God will not provide for him or set his affairs in order. We think we will save those little chicks up there. There are times when you will have to sacrifice your own flesh and blood and show the love you have for your own kin to someone outside your circle. These are strange things. If I could tell you about particular incidents, you would say I was right—provided, of course, that you were disposed to believe them. “His wealth flees, and the fire receives him.” There is, of course, another case here as well. Some people save and hoard, piling up wealth and turning it into a great power, imagining that these things will make them secure. But strength, he says, does not lie in possessions.

to increase the amount on deposit, to increase the gold; for the person who gives alms both lends righteously and makes a deposit in a bank where the exchange rate never falls. Its value never decreases. It does not depend on the dollar exchange clause. It has no concern for the gold of this world. It is the bank of God.

John Chrysostom gives a beautiful example. He says, “The One who gives you money asks for some of His own back through the hands of the poor.” He is the One who gave it to you—who gave you knowledge, who gave you work, who gave you your intellect and your strength, and who brought the right people into your life. And you call these your own achievements, foolish man, claiming to be self-made? What lies are these? How are you self-made? You studied at Vallianos’s expense, while someone else dug the earth so that you could eat. What do you mean, self-made? Is anyone self-made? It is God’s providence, God’s power, God’s grace, and God’s forbearance. He is the One who brings about every circumstance.

There are, then, cases which, if a person reflects on them in this way, could greatly benefit him and awaken a compassionate heart within him. I did not—I could not have imagined that the discussion would take this turn. I had a letter from a Christian. There is no reason to keep such letters. He is a man like an angel, who gives various people something each month according to their needs. If I had that letter here to read to you now, there would be no need for me to say anything else—not even what I have already said. It would be a great lesson for us today, for he has this kind of care for others. But such letters should not be kept; they should be torn up at once. Keeping one can cause harm and does no good. If I spoke in his defense, that too could become a fall on the right; yet it is remarkable how the man does not become poor.

It is the hand of God that, at the appointed moment, reaches out through His servant to remove the iron collar from the neck of someone lying bedridden with a serious illness. But we do not grasp this as fully as we should. I did not say that we should give away all our property; I did not say that. But we should open our hand a little. Do you want your stomach to stop hurting? Let it relax a little. Do what you do when you have an attack: you apply a hot-water bottle or use an enema. The stomach stops cramping and relaxes—and there, the colic is gone. This is the most practical thing of all. You do this and find relief. But if the stomach hardens, you will grit your teeth and groan. That is exactly what we shall suffer on that Day if we are not careful to make good use of these things. And greed is not merely what you mean when you call someone greedy; it is not—

It is not only money; it is suits, shirts, shoes, blankets—it includes everything. Someone else has none, while I have ten. Someone needs shoes, while I have fifteen pairs. I have woolens; I have this; I have that. I am covetous, because that person is also my responsibility, and God expects this of me. I should not go naked, but neither should that person be left shivering there in the freezing cold. Covetousness takes many forms.

A great deal.

Let me add one more thing, which number six says. “He squandered it badly.” It says that one day he will beg to return to this world, even for a little while, though he squandered all those years when he could have labored for his soul and did not. This brings us to something I once told you: if someone were to go to Hell and ask one of the condemned, “How can I help you? What would you like me to say to our Christ?” they would all answer with one voice: “Let Him give us back our flesh for just two minutes, so that we may become human again, go back up, and cry out, ‘I have sinned!’” That is what we failed to do for so many years. The park benches consumed our time; the public squares consumed our time; the coffeehouses consumed our time; and now television has consumed our time as well—work, things, all sorts of distractions—and there is no time to be found for...

Then a person can come to himself and say, “Alas! Now I would beg to return to the world, to begin my life there once more—the life I squandered so badly.” He squandered it, and his time was lost. For time is not a wild beast, though some people say, “Let us kill some time.” Time is not a wild beast. Our elders used to tell us, “Spare your time; have pity on it, because whatever passes never returns, my beloved.”

We are heading toward that place, while time never turns back. That is why we say it has been consigned to history: time enters the graveyard. And if a person does not make good use of it, when he finds himself there, he will say, “Woe is me! What now? I could have done so many things while I was in this world.” For here, without money, without great effort, without, without, without—a person, through sincere metanoia, sincere repentance, and a sincere confession...

With a tear befitting his repentance, a person can set his affairs in order. But when he goes to the next life, he will seek this opportunity and will not find it.

Αλίμονο στον άνθρωπο τον βλάσφημο. «Δεσμεῖται γὰρ ἡ γλῶσσα». Δένεται η γλώσσα του, δεν μπορεί να απολογηθεί. «Καὶ πῶς ἀπολογήσεται πρὸς τὸν κριτὴν οὐ δύναται». Και πώς να δικαιολογήσει που έμεινε βλάσφημος, που έγινε βλάσφημος, που ήτο βλάσφημος; Δεν έχει δικαιολογία, λέει, εκείνη τη μέρα. Τώρα, ορισμένοι που το ακούνε τώρα πρώτο χέρι και αυτοί που θα τα ακούσουν δεύτερο ή τρίτο χέρι από τα μαγνητόφωνα, αμέσως αναπαύονται, διότι έρχεται ένας όμορφος συλλογισμός και λέει: «Εγώ, δόξα τω Θεώ, δεν βλασφημώ». Το θέμα όμως δεν είναι έτσι όσο φαίνεται εύκολο. Τολμώ να πω ότι δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος που να μην είναι βλάσφημος. Μα, δεν μου κόβεται η γλώσσα καλύτερα;

Αυτός που κάνει αυτό, δεν βλασφημεί τον Θεό; Τον βλασφημεί τον Θεό, ότι το Ευαγγέλιό του και η διδασκαλία του είναι ακατόρθωτα. Και τον βλασφημεί τον Θεό, ότι κάποια διδασκαλία του δεν περνάει σήμερα. Σοβαρά; Δεν περνάει η διδασκαλία του Θεού; Περνάει η διδασκαλία του Θεού. Τι του βλάπτεις; Τη φήμη του Θεού, ότι δεν έχει δύναμη να σε βοηθήσει στις δύσκολες αυτές τις στιγμές. Και σε βάζει ο σατανάς εκ των υστέρων, με τον λογισμόν αυτόν, στο χέρι και δουλεύεις τον σατανά και βλασφημείς τον Θεό ως προνοητή. Δεν είναι οι βλασφημίες αυτές που ακούμε κατά της Παναγίας μας, κατά του Κυρίου μας, κατά του Τιμίου Σταυρού. Δεν είναι αυτές μόνον. Είναι τόσες άλλες βλασφημίες. Λέγει η μάνα με τα κορίτσια: «Περιμένεις τώρα, αν δεν ανοίξεις το σπίτι σου, να έρθουν οι γαμπροί μέσα; Πού θα βρεις;». Δεν έχετε δει το «Τί ἐστι θεοθεΐα;» Δεν πει ο Θεός;

υπάρχει. Γι' αυτό δεν ξέρω αν έχετε προσέξει: όταν νομοθέτησε διά του Μωυσέως, δεν είχε βάλει για τη βλασφημία μέσα νόμο. Δεν είχε βάλει. Είχε βάλει για τον πόρνο, είχε βάλει για τον μοιχό, είχε βάλει για τον ψεύτη, είχε βάλει για το να σέβεται τον πατέρα, είχε βάλει για όλους. Έλεγε ο Δεκάλογος. Για βλασφημία δεν έλεγε. Δηλαδή αυτό είναι, σαν να λέμε, άνω ποταμών. Δεν ήθελε ο Θεός να κάνει ποτέ συζήτηση για τέτοιο πράγμα, διότι ούτε ποτέ το περίμενε με το... Όχι, δεν το έπρεπε να γίνει, αλλά να διδάξει τον άνθρωπο ότι «σε τέτοιο πράγμα δεν περιμένω τέτοια αμαρτία, να βλασφημεί τον Θεό». Τι σου κάνει ο Θεός; Τι σου κάνει; Σου έκλεισε το ρεύμα, της Παναγίας; Τι είναι αυτό το πράγμα; Δεν βιδώνει, δεν ξεκλειδώνει η κλειδωνιά, «τον Χριστό». Τι δουλειά έχει με το κλειδί ο Χριστός; Τι σου έκανε; Πού σου βρήκε ποτέ;

«οὐκ ἐλαττωθήσονται παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ». Κατά έναν μυστηριώδη τρόπο, ο Θεός ευλογεί τα υπάρχοντα του ανθρώπου, ο οποίος δεν πλεονεκτεί, στέκεται στα απαραίτητά του και δίδει το πλεόνασμά του και σε κάποιον άλλον που έχει ανάγκη. Εντούτοις όμως δεν το έχουμε βάλει όσο πρέπει εμείς αυτό μέσα και πολλές φορές δεν το καταλαβαίνουμε, τιμωρούμε το. Παραδείγματι, εγώ είχα πέντε παιδιά, δεν είχα ένα, και εκείνο πόσο, ξέρετε, ο Άγιος Μεθόδιος. Λοιπόν, είχα πέντε παιδιά και εφόσον μπορούσα να μην εξασφαλίσω και τα πέντε με την εμπιστοσύνη προς τον Θεό και να καλύπτω κάποια ανάγκη ενός άλλου που έχει και δεν το έκανα, θα ζητήσει λόγο ο Θεός: γιατί εγώ ήρθα εκεί;
