Summary

Drawing on the ascetic wisdom preserved at Mount Sinai, the lecture urges Christians to seek from God what benefits the soul rather than what is pleasant or easy. As God chose the humble shepherd David, Christians must judge people by the heart rather than by clothing, status, education, or possessions. Because Christ and the angels see even hidden actions, believers should remove the thorns of sin through repentance and confession while time remains.

When we gave our last talk in July, before we paused, I spoke about certain things which, as you may have understood, came from Mount Sinai. When I went there, among all that we saw and in the time granted to us to contemplate the beauty and dignity of that place, I managed to retain certain elements from the teaching of those people. As I was saying, theirs is a refined and purified nous, the spiritual intellect. In simple words, they set forth how each person should live, what counsel he should follow, and what dangers he should guard against.

What is the lure of society here, and what should a person do? For God has appointed a day on which He will judge the whole world in righteousness. We Athenians ought to know this better than others, because the Apostle Paul told us this here in Athens, at the Pnyx, and it is specifically written in the seventeenth chapter of Acts. I also told you that at Sinai there is the greatest library in the world. They say that the Vatican has the greatest library in the world. That is not true. Even if its library is very large, what it contains was stolen, whereas those who...

...beside the Theotokos, where people expect imposing offices and are impressed by the place—there are no offices there, no administrative departments, nothing of the kind. From that hesychasterion, that hermitage, what I myself “stole” were accounts of spiritual struggles. What is preserved there brings joy to anyone able to read it, beginning with Saint John Climacus of Sinai, in whose writings all these things are found. I gathered certain passages and brought them to your loving attention. Tonight, allow me to continue with the words of these holy men, and with God’s help I shall set them before you one by one.

The simplest words, yet powerful. Continuing his reflections and sayings, he writes: “Let no one ask God merely for pleasant things—that is, for sweetness from God, for what is agreeable and easy. Ask only for what is beneficial, only for what is beneficial. That, and that alone, is what you should ask from God.” If, for example, God permits what He gives you to be less than pleasant, you should accept it, provided that it is for your benefit. For example...

...the knife—I mean an operation, though I do not know what the prospects may be—we still have to undergo it. Neither the knife nor the instrument of surgery, the scalpel, is pleasant; yet if there is no other way, refusing it may mean death. Things may look very grave. A person may know that he will remain in hospital for a long time, fall into debt, or even have to go abroad. Why, then, would he not undertake it and go? He endures it, though it is unpleasant. Why? Because it concerns an illness and what is truly for his benefit. Do you understand? So this holy man speaks very rightly.

Diadochos of Photike. God may grant something, and it may have terrible consequences. When we were discussing the many ascetic teachings before us, I came to the relevant point in the account of Eulogios. He was pressing God on behalf of a man who worked in a quarry, arguing that if the man had more money, he would help more people.

Each evening, the quarryman gave his day’s wages as alms to those in need. When Eulogios received hospitality from this wise laborer, this man who worked with his hands, he pleaded with God in prayer: “Why does this man not have money to distribute?” God did not give him riches, but left him only his daily wage. Yet Eulogios kept pressing God, saying that God was unjust not to give money to such a man, so that he might become a benefactor to so many who were hungry and in need. God said, “Will you answer for his soul?” “Yes, I will answer for it.” And you will remember the result: the very next day, the man found money where he was striking the rock in the quarry.

He secretly loaded up his goods, slipped away, and disappeared.

That evening Eulogios sought a place at his table, but found none, and so he departed. A great scandal arose in the city, and the whole affair became very serious. “Bend your knee again, humble yourself, and ask forgiveness,” he was told. “You were mistaken; God is able to find a way to set him right.” We often try to force God, as though saying: “God is wrong. I know more than God and better than God.” A man does not even know what is right beneath his own nose, yet he says, “Give that man money,” and is proud enough to think that he knows. Therefore, he says, do not ask God for pleasant things, but only for what is beneficial. “My God, You know; let Your will be done.” That is a great saying. Pay no heed even if it pains us or causes us sorrow, or if we must remain still longer...

...under temptation, in poverty, abandoned by the world, or anything else. Why do you demand such a thing? Very often, if God gives it, that person will be lost—and not only the person, but the life of his soul as well. These, then, are beautiful and practical thoughts, drawn from real experience. He then speaks about poverty. You know that we do not want poverty or want. “Ah, if only I had something too! Could I not have it as well? Why should this person have it, and why should that other person have it?” And so on. Yet poverty often keeps a person humble and moderate.

It keeps a person’s life within measure—very much so. We know people who are said to have succeeded in rising, and many have risen by stepping on others. What we have acquired—or rather, seized—cannot withstand the justice of God. God cuts it down. It is not genuine or pure; foreign matter is mixed into it, and it cannot endure. Yet we regard everyone else as fools. Such a person claims to know how to live. But whoever does not know how to die does not know how to live either. A truly intelligent person is one who is awake, outside sleep. That is what “intelligent” means—not what bosses, schemers, and crafty men possess.

They say, “We are intelligent people.” But Saint Isaac says that an intelligent person is one who is awake. Awake from what sleep? From the sleep of sin: “Awakened from the dark sleep of sin.” He does not mean the natural sleep God has given us, through which we rest. That is a good gift bestowed by God out of His love for mankind: a person may sleep for ten minutes and rise renewed. He is not speaking about that great blessing, but about the other sleep, when we tell someone, “Stay awake.” A person is not truly awake unless he has come out of sin. So long as he remains in sin and schemes how to commit sin—through fraud, deceit, falsehood, forgery, double-dealing, theft, and so forth—he cannot be called successful, and you cannot applaud him. Far better is the person...

...who is honest and upright, even if he goes hungry, even if he is desperately poor. We tend to place such people in a secondary position because we have learned to value a person’s outward appearance. We look to see whether he wears a tie or fine clothes. But the center of gravity, the true gold and worth, lies in the human soul. This truth was beautifully expressed through the Prophet Samuel when he came to Jesse, David’s father, to anoint a king. Jesse brought before him all his educated sons and the rest, but he could never imagine that God would choose David as king—the one who was out grazing the animals...

...on the dry, cracked hillsides, carrying his little bag, his cornbread, and his shepherd’s staff. “Could God possibly look upon him?” When the messenger found himself at an impasse, God said to him, “Listen carefully. God does not see as you human beings see. Human beings look at outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” Then Samuel said, “Send for him, for we will not sit down to eat until the one who is still out there comes.” When he had asked Jesse, “Do you have another son?” Jesse first said, “No, I have no other.” Then he added, “Well, yes, there is one with the sheep”—that is, one who tends the flock, unlike those who were there dressed in their fine cuffs and heavy garments.

“And are we now to bring him up here before kings and dignitaries, dressed as he is?” “What do you mean, ‘bring him’?” But as soon as David arrived, the Lord said, “Arise; this is he. Anoint him.” This, then, is how God sees. Let us pay attention to what we have been saying: how God looks upon the humble. I will put it plainly. Suppose some relative of yours arrives, a poor man who is unkempt and has come from a village with very little. You have guests and fine things in your sitting room. Will you bring him through there and welcome him inside, or will you send him up by the back stairs? “Where is George? Where is he?” There was also that great man of ours—I think it was Joas—who was invited to a grand banquet and said...

“You quarreled with me and said that I did not want to put on proper clothes.” Something like that was his reproach. And that is where this leads.

Secondly, what is there to see in such things? Have we come to our senses? No, we have not. We do not have the eyes of God, so as to see where a person’s true worth lies. Do we measure him by what he has done and who he truly is, or by what is in his bank account and how much he has in his wardrobe?

“Do not hate poverty, for it makes the spiritual contestant free from distraction in observing the law.” Listen to what he says here: “Do not hate poverty.” The less you possess, the fewer distractions and cares you have, and the lighter your responsibility concerning the moral law, because, as he continues, the person who possesses much...

...is often carried away, without even realizing it, by the things he owns, and does precisely the opposite of what benefits his soul. “Do not hate poverty.” Do not deliberately pursue it, but accept it when it comes. “For it makes the spiritual contestant free from distraction in observing the law.” It helps a person, he says, to struggle toward victory with fewer cares and fewer temptations. Consider two travelers. One has empty hands, or perhaps only a small bag with a little bread and a flask of water. The other is burdened with two heavy baskets. Let him carry the weight—real weight. We are climbing Mount Parnassus or Mount Olympus.

Who will walk more easily? The one who is heavily laden? He can hardly walk; the load hinders him. The other, who is carrying less, will travel more easily. Generally speaking, the same is true of faith. The fewer things a person has to manage, the better it is for his faith, because he will face fewer difficulties and temptations. Possessions can become a great material snare of Satan, a great temptation. I am simply saying, in connection with what we have been discussing, that poverty—that is, having fewer things—allows a person to pass more easily through this world. Many people, as you know, have been lost amid riches. They lost their souls; they lost everything, absolutely everything, because they did not place their faith entirely in God and allow Him to guide them. Of course, just as wealth can be a temptation, poverty can also be a temptation. Solomon the Wise offers a beautiful prayer about this in Proverbs. Those of you who read the Old Testament should look for it in the thirtieth chapter of Proverbs.

In verses 7 through 9 he says—and I will put it in simple words—“Two things I ask of You, O God; do not deny them to me before I die.” In other words: “There are two things I want You to grant me throughout my life. First, remove vanity and falsehood far from me. Do not let the vanity of this world cling to me or occupy my thoughts, lest I be led astray. Remove vanity and falsehood far from me. And give me neither poverty nor riches.” Neither poverty nor wealth: both have their dangers and can bring ruin. Why? “Feed me with the food that is sufficient for me.”

“Feed me with what is sufficient for me, lest I become full and deny You, saying, ‘Who is the Lord?’ or lest I become poor, steal, and take the name of my God in vain.” Feed me with what is sufficient for me. I see that I am weak and in danger. I am not saying that I should deliberately place myself among the poor; perhaps I would not be able to endure it. But neither should I seek to place myself among the rich, especially by unlawful means. That is what I mean. Do not hate poverty, and do not pursue riches. Be careful, because poverty can leave you less distracted: you have fewer affairs in which to become entangled, to lie, to cheat, or to keep watch over possessions.

A person may reason, “I hardly eat anything.” But if you were to see how many little morsels I ate throughout the day before I finally sat down before my small plate—if you added them all together and piled them up, you would see how much they came to. Truly, that is how it is. So it is with a person’s sins, and so it is with his deeds. The devil has an adding machine, and he keeps adding them up.

Here is another example. Load a barge with great stones. Is there a possibility that it will sink? Of course there is. But if we load another barge with sand, with tiny grain after tiny grain, is there no possibility that it too will sink? It certainly can sink, even though one carries little grains of sand while the other carries boulders. Both can sink. So it is with man. Let no one be deceived into saying, “This is small, and that is small, and the other thing is small.” What do all these little things become? Together, they become something great. Besides, small things are often the cause of great ones. Anyone who examines the Law of the Gospel will find this there. The commandment of old said, “You shall not murder.”

But now I tell you: do not even become angry, because anger can lead to murder before you realize where it is taking you. The old commandment also dealt with adultery. But I say: guard even your eyes. For where does the sin begin? You say, “It is nothing merely to look.” Yet the Gospel gives a law even for the eyes, because the eyes too can look unlawfully. What is a single glance? Ask someone who has fallen because of one, and he will tell you what that glance became, though at first it seemed to be nothing. These supposed nothings, these little things, cause many great disasters. The same is true, for example, of wealth. A person says, “Let wealth come; I am strong enough to handle it.” Yet riches bring cares of their own.

Money separates a person from God, leads him astray, and divides people from one another. Before he realizes it, money has separated him from God. Take a merchant and speak to him of the name of Jesus Christ. Ask him, “Is everything in order?” Think of all his schemes and dealings. A man cannot pass through a coal yard without being blackened. If he does come out unblackened, then he must be a remarkable exception. You may say, “The man who wrote these things was at Sinai! He spoke there at Sinai, where he saw neither birds nor people.” Granted; he may have had no experience of our circumstances. Nevertheless, this is a great lesson for us.

We must not remain asleep here, imagining that everything is well with us. We are not in such good order that we can count ourselves justified. Judgment awaits us on that day.

There will be a set of scales, and no human hand will be holding it. If a man held it, he might tilt it a little so that the balance would lean the way we wanted. But Christ holds it!

And in the end, all this will reach its fulfillment. Many people think they must keep building things up so that afterward they can live, but they do not live long enough. What will become of everything they built? Will the words spoken to that rich man not apply to them: “Fool, fool! This very night they demand your soul from you”? Some of our separated brethren insist on rendering it in the singular, “He demands.” But the text says, “They demand.” Who are “they”? Those with the horns and the tail. They have come to demand your soul. If a person possessed this spiritual wisdom and kept it in mind, he would give thanks and say:

“At any moment I may depart; this life is not mine.” How, then, could I fail to prepare and instead go on sinning? Let us bring the matter down to everyday things. If a refrigerator is not fully automatic and does not defrost itself, it becomes covered with ice. Why must I have a refrigerator today, when we once put water and ice in a basin and drank cold water that way? We cooked only for the day; there was no food left for the next day, and we lived like that for ten, fifteen, or twenty years. Why, then, do I have a refrigerator today? I have made life easier for myself or for my wife. Very well. But how do I use the time this saves? How does my wife use the time she saves when she no longer has to wash everything by hand and can cook in fifteen or twenty minutes?

Does she spend it talking on the telephone or watching television? If the fine achievements of so-called civilization enable you to save time and you use that time for good, then may it be blessed. Yet that is not usually what happens. What do all the devices we possess today actually do for us? In the end, they often serve our comfort and negligence. It is a terrible thing for a person to believe that he can escape the justice of God. How did he come to such a state? How did his heart grow so callous? How did he reach the point where he neither sees nor senses what is coming? I cannot understand it. When a cat has eaten the fish or caused some other damage, the moment it sees the lady of the house, you can tell from its behavior what it has done.

Look at the cat and you immediately know that it has done some mischief. How, then, does a person persuade himself—and silence his conscience—by saying that he will not have to give an account, that no one sees him, and that he should not be called to account? How does he accomplish this? What callousness of heart is this? I cannot measure it; I cannot understand it. In the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes, Solomon the Wise addresses young people who lack discernment. Yet this applies also to us older people: we have grown old and still have not come to our senses. He says to the young man, “Yes, rejoice and go wherever your heart desires.”

“You are young; do as you please. Follow your flesh, follow your ego, go on and on as you wish. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” Man is a tiny creature. Which man would you like to choose? One who held the whole world in his hand? Choose Napoleon the Great, Alexander the Great—whomever you wish.

With a single step toward the grave, he must understand that he is always small. Of course, his pride does not want to accept this. But death will reveal it. Life itself belongs to God, for life is not something man can manufacture. He may bring together the ovum and the sperm, but life itself already exists as a gift.

Speaking of the negligent man, the text says that the harvest will certainly come upon him: “Since the harvest is not far off”—and by “harvest” he means the reaping, not the summer season—“let us rid the fields of the soul of their thorns.” Since the harvest is near, let us free the fields of the soul from their thorns.

At some unexpected moment, the sickle of death will reap us. How often have people around us died when we did not expect it? No medical diagnosis, no outward sign, had prepared us, and suddenly we found ourselves face-to-face with an unexpected death. The harvest, then, is now. Since the harvest is not far off for any of us, “let us rid the fields of the soul of their thorns.” While there is still time, let us pull the thorns out of the soul. We know that even at this very moment, as I am speaking, there are people here with many thorns in their souls. They have borne these thorns for years, yet have never resolved to free themselves from them through repentance and confession.

This is necessary if we are to be fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. We must remember that nothing is hidden from the attention of the Judge—that is, from Christ the Judge. Nothing escapes Him. It is therefore futile for anyone to think that sins committed in secret remain concealed. None of the sinful things we do disappears. Nothing escapes His notice. He will know everything, He will see everything, and one day we shall give an account for everything. The text then offers a thought about the way people sin. People, as you know, because they possess...

What in formal Greek is called a sense of shame—the blush that appears upon the face. Many of us have lost that blush; we no longer possess this shame. The saint says: “You take precautions so that no one will see you when you sin.” Although today even such restraint has largely disappeared. Human life is no longer lived with modesty. People live their lives at night. Look at your friends, your children, and people in general today: they go out to clubs, places of entertainment, and all kinds of gatherings. Life today has become a life of the night. Yet this man, the saint, says...

“You may avoid human eyes and do something in secret, but you cannot avoid the eyes of the angel. The angel sees it.” You know, Satan is a skilled craftsman. He plays his tune again and again, tormenting a person with his whistle until the consequences come. You read yesterday’s newspaper: a woman strangled her lover with gauze. This had been going on for three years, though he was married and had two children. Tragically, in the end he lost not only eternity but this temporal life as well. For three years Satan had been whistling his tune, and now the man was destroyed. You know what happened. We read one such story on the front page, another farther on, and still another after that—every day, all of them revolving around sin.

Just because you can escape the eyes of your family, the police, or the priest, do not think that you have escaped notice and are safe. The angels see you. Have you ever read what the eighteenth chapter of Matthew says? It reminds us: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones.” Do not harm any Christian, it says, because their angels, their guardian angels, behold God. Just as Satan records, so too does the angel record, for people are often asleep and cannot imagine...

There is another life accompanying each one of us beyond the life seen by other people. Be ashamed before the angels. Even apart from being ashamed before people, be ashamed at least before the angels. You may escape people so that we do not know what you do in secret, for we are often great hypocrites even within our own families. Yet many angels are present; they count and record our deeds. Thus, even if you escape human notice, you cannot escape the angel, nor can you escape the devil. You have surely heard many times the confessions made by evil spirits.

They reveal hidden things and often remind us of deeds committed at unsuspected moments forty, thirty, or fifty years ago. It is as though you were listening to a recording made at the time, bringing everything back to the surface. Only when we cleanse these things through Holy Confession do they cease to exist and can no longer be brought against us. Everything else, however, is recorded both by the angel and by Satan. Judgment is the most fearful thing facing man, and when a person knows that judgment awaits him, he must take a stand. That is why the Church has always taken care that, as a person leaves the church...

he is reminded of this. You will know that wherever an icon of the Last Judgment is painted, it is always placed above the door, showing a person what awaits him. It reminds him: “Take heed; this awaits you. As you go out and see the world, be careful not to lose your soul.” There, drawn directly from the Gospel, hangs the balance upon which man will be judged. A person must understand that he will be judged according to the Gospel—not according to what the world says or how one person or another imagines things. No! The standard is the Gospel and what it says about Christ.

We must not concern ourselves with what people say. Some say that You are Jeremiah; others say Isaiah; others, one of the prophets. “But who do you say that the Son of Man is?” Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but God has granted you to say it concerning Me.” Our concern, then, is this Jesus, Christ crucified, the Nazarene. What one person or another says is not the issue. He is the One. And what does Holy Scripture say? “It bore witness concerning Me.” No one will be able to cast these things aside. As I told you the other day, if what Holy Scripture declares is true, then it bears witness to God’s purpose concerning Israel.

We are too small to contain these things in our little minds. The angels do not add inventions of their own, nor do the demons, burdened with their accusations, add whatever they please, as though competing over who can add the most. What the demons carry and present at a person’s judgment are his sins, if he has not confessed them. Thank you.

Now, while we have the opportunity, let me tell you: pay close attention. Sit down and examine even the smallest matters. Obtain helpful books about Holy Confession that can assist you in preparing for it. Do not deceive yourselves by saying, “It is only a tiny sin.” If it remains, you will have difficulty when you must answer for it. Do not be deceived. He then writes: “Be mindful of the Judge’s balance.”

Be mindful.

He tells you always to keep before your eyes the righteous judgment of God and to cast every loathsome thing out of the bag of your own life, reflecting without ceasing upon the Judge’s balance.

Our elders used to say that a person needs two bags, one hanging in front and one behind. He hangs the bag containing other people’s sins in front, while his own bag hangs behind, so that he does not see his own sins, although others see them. Therefore, take heed to your own bag: cast out every vile thing from your private life, thinking continually of the Judge’s balance. All these worthless things will be placed upon the scales and will weigh them down on their side. Idleness is also harmful. A person suffers harm when he rests carelessly.

When we speak of resting, we do not mean resting because you are tired. We mean failing to labor for the salvation of your soul and neglecting it. Regard idleness as harmful, careless ease as harmful, and freedom from concern as harmful, when you do not care what will happen. You must do whatever will be required of you in the age to come, for an account will be demanded down to the last detail, until, as it says, you have paid the very last penny. As quickly as possible, a person must cast off everything burdensome, corrupt, and unable to endure the judgment.

“A river of fire flowed forth from before His throne.” Read Daniel and look at Holy Scripture: a fiery river comes forth from before Christ, descends, and flows onward into a vast abyss. All human works, it says, will pass through it. If they cannot endure, they will be swept away and consumed by fire. But if they endure because they have already been tested here, as iron and gold are tested, then they will remain. To reason in this way and to take care not to become attached to one thing or another...

a person must believe completely that his life is temporary. As we said on another occasion, he must believe that he does not belong permanently to the earth but is a sojourner here. Human beings are called sojourners upon the earth; they are strangers here. They stand between Heaven and earth. They are neither wholly of the earth nor yet in Heaven: their feet touch the earth, but they are destined for Heaven. A person will depart at an unsuspected hour and go where he did not expect. Often we do not wish this, yet we have failed to prepare here as we should. It is so easy for a person of good will to be saved. Yet some people have fashioned such a life for themselves...

As the Gospel says, “Lord, increase my faith.” Some have formed such a chain of interlocking links that no one can untangle it. They have made a Gordian knot of carnal, personal, and intellectual sins from which they cannot escape. I would remind them of something I often say: such a Gordian knot was presented to Alexander the Great. They brought him to untie it, but when he looked at it, he drew his sword and said, “What cannot be untied must be cut.” Then he struck it with his sword. For us Christians, Christ is Alexander the Great in this image.

We must call upon Christ to deal with the Gordian knot we have created in our lives, which prevents us from escaping and being freed from sin. We must call upon Him with humility: “Lord, You know what I have done to this soul of mine, which You gave me free and for whose freedom You sacrificed Yourself. For years I have entangled it around corrupt flesh and the things of the human world. Please take charge of it. Humanly speaking, no solution remains for me. Yet the fact that You still keep me alive in this world, breathing and eating, is a sign to me that a solution exists and that You are waiting for me.” Thank you.

Even in this life, when everything seems closed, nothing remains, and everything is against you, matters can still be set right. You may hear laws and words from Holy Scripture spoken for your sake. God is above, not below or merely beside us. God goes before us, yet we have never entrusted to Him the serious matters of our lives or the entanglements we ourselves have created. These souls of ours are not our property; they belong to God. Blessed is the person who understands this and cries out to Him, “Your property is in danger!” Then God will take care of it. But we have never cried out to Him, because we regard it as our own.

Therefore, this holy man says concerning the uncertainty of life: “None of the adversities will trouble you severely. Consider the uncertainty of life, and none of the adversities will trouble you severely.” Do not let the bright, pleasant, and joyful but temporary things of the earth delight you excessively. They are hooks baited by Satan and set for the soul. Through their bait, a person falls into temptations. “But against them, seek courage.” Show some courage and drive away temptations...

if you truly believe that your life is temporary. How long anyone will live is unknown. My beloved, that we shall die is certain; the hour and the year are uncertain. Death comes like a thief in the night. “In the night” does not merely mean nighttime; it means a moment when we are spiritually asleep, when death comes upon us unexpectedly. Forgive me; I do not know whether what I am telling you seems harsh, but it is true. These words come from wisdom and protect us from all the things that the world regards as great pleasures but that become painful goads to the soul. Do whatever you can, set right whatever you can, and act as quickly as possible, because neither as individuals...

nor as a nation do we have any certainty that we shall still be here tomorrow. It is a tragedy for the soul to be lost for a few kernels of corn—for the little delights of this so-called world. Through the prayer of this holy man, I pray that from this very evening... Let us stop here and continue, God willing, in our next talk.

Ανά πάσαν στιγμή μπορώ να φύγω, δεν είναι δικό μου. Πώς ήθελα να μην παρασκευθώ και αμαρτήσω; Ας δείξω λίγο πιο χαμηλά. Αν δεν είναι υπεραυτόματο το ψυγείο να κάνει μόνο του απόψυξη, αφήνει, ξέρω εγώ, με πάγο. Εγώ γιατί να έχω σήμερα ψυγείο, εφόσον σε μια λεκάνη βάζαμε το νερό και τον πάγο και πίναμε νερό; Μαγειρεύαμε για την ημέρα, δεν έμενε φαγητό για την άλλη ημέρα, και περάσαμε 10, 15, 20 χρόνια. Γιατί σήμερα να έχω ψυγείο; Δημιούργησα ευκολία στον εαυτό μου ή στη γυναίκα μου. Συμφωνώ. Πώς διαθέτω τον χρόνον αυτόν; Πώς διαθέτει η γυναίκα μου τον χρόνον αυτόν που της περισσεύει από το να πλένει ο τεμπέλης εκεί πέρα, από το να μαγειρεύει μέσα σε ένα τέταρτο, σε είκοσι λεπτά;

Είσαι νέος, κάνε το δικό σου, πίσω από τη σάρκα σου, πίσω από το εγώ σου, πίσω, πίσω, πίσω. Γνώριζε όμως ότι για πάντα αυτά θέλω σε φέρει σπίτι. Ο άνθρωπος ήταν ένα ποδαράκι μικρό. Ποιον άνθρωπο θέλετε; Έναν που έτσι έκανε την υβρολία στο χέρι; Θέλετε τον Μέγα Ναπολέοντα, θέλετε τον Μέγα Αλέξανδρο, ποιον θέλετε;
