Summary
The lecture resumes Saint Nilus’s ten beatitudes, contrasting them with his ten woes and with Christ’s warnings in Matthew 23. Parents must prepare children for life’s trials and teach the faith through consistent personal example, since instruction without lived obedience encourages imitation of hypocrisy. The third beatitude teaches that virtue must be pure and the soul sincere, because good works corrupted by pride, display, greed, or hypocrisy lose their spiritual value.

This evening, by the grace of God, we shall continue something we left unfinished. Many of you will remember that it concerned the sayings of a certain holy man, which we took from the Horologion—specifically, from Saint Nilus.
You will remember that we devoted nine talks in succession to this subject.
They dealt more generally with our life, especially the life of those of us who live here in the city and are, in a certain sense, rather lax in matters of faith. This man of the desert, with a pure nous, illumined and concise, gave us many teachings from which we could be benefited, if we wished. Looking through my notes, I found that we had stopped at the point where he listed ten “woes,” in contrast with our Lord, who pronounced eight “woes,” as we read on the evening of Great Tuesday from the twenty-third chapter of Matthew.
He then gives ten beatitudes, as you will remember—and this is also written down. What he says in the beatitudes is exactly the opposite of what he says in the “woes.” These are his own reflections, showing us, in a few words, what makes a person blessed. Everyone wants to be blessed, not merely in name but in life. Yet unless a person stands as he should, he will not be blessed, even if...
The name may sound blessed, but that alone is not enough. Listen, then, to what he says in the first beatitude, where he calls such a person blessed: “Blessed is he who has walked the narrow way, for he stands crowned in Heaven.” Whoever walks the narrow way will be found crowned in the world to come. But what does this narrow way mean? Does it mean leaving the main road and walking through the alleys? What does he mean? When he speaks of the narrow way, he means the spiritually narrow way.
Do not do only what is easy, or always seek what is easy; pursue what is difficult. A person who intends to be with God must bear in mind that almost everything will feel constraining, that he will always be pressed into a narrow space. By this we do not mean merely feeling sorrowful. The Greek word for being constrained comes from the words “narrow” and “space.” You must always pass along the way that brings salvation, even when it is narrow. You can pass through this life easily: you can steal, dishonor others, remain indifferent, refuse to fast, and exercise no self-restraint. You can devour anyone who stands in your way, and so forth. That is easy.
But is that the road of salvation? You will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven wearing a crown; you will remain outside with horns and a tail. The point is to discover how you may enter the Kingdom of Heaven crowned. You will enter if you pass through this world by the narrow way. Satan offers many paths in this world, beginning from our earliest years, from the moment the flesh begins to demand what it wants, the ego what it wants, and so forth. The devil is standing ready to help a person and to say: “There is no reason for all that. They made a mistake yesterday at your Baptism when they renounced me. I am ready to help you pass comfortably through this life. All you have to do is...”
“...not renounce me, because at your Baptism you did renounce me. They made you say that you renounced me and united yourself to Christ. Now He will ask virginity of you; He will ask fasting of you; He will ask prayer of you; He will ask you to eat your bread by the sweat of your face; He will ask you to have children—or perhaps not to marry—and so forth. Consequently, everything will seem narrow and constraining. I am ready to help you, provided that you reject these things and say, ‘I renounce You, Christ, and unite myself to you, Satan.’” Sadly, many people do not follow this narrow way because they want to rise easily and make their life comfortable here, since they do not believe in another life. It is easy for a person to live for this world, although what I am saying is not absolute. For many people have sought an easy life here...
Yet they very quickly found their devil, because Satan is a sadist and punishes his own subjects. Whoever obeys the devil is punished. Observe people who live however they please. Observe those who accept no restraints, who will tolerate no bridle in matters of the soul, and who leave themselves open in every direction. Many times, we end up gathering them in pieces from various places. If we think about it deeply, even Satan’s way—although he makes promises, and although the broad road appears somewhat easy and pleasant—has its ugly side. The life of Satan, this so-called broad way, is filled with filth. It is more profitable for a person to deny himself certain things of this world.
There is another world. Some people do not know that there is another world; but if it does exist—and I say this to help them—then it is to their advantage not to enjoy certain things here, not to pass everything through their belly, as we say, nor through their flesh and their ego. It is to their advantage. Even if there were only one chance in ten million that life exists there, it would still be to their advantage. For you gain nothing, believe me, even if you enjoy all these things. They contain so much pain and bitterness. If you eat a lettuce in the evening, your tongue will not be bitter the next morning. If you eat meat patties and nightingale tongues in the evening, your tongue will be like a sewer in the morning. So it is with everything the world presents as appetizing and beautiful, everything that tickles our senses and that we enjoy. These things contain bitterness; they contain gall.
This applies in every direction: to the individual, the home, commerce, society—everything. For a time the devil covers things up and lends his help; but afterward he coils his tail, as Dante says, and whistles. Then he exposes us and strips us naked, until we can no longer even stand in society. We must not take that road. The Lord says, “Narrow and afflicted is the way that leads to life.” It is narrow and afflicted. It has no room for us when we are fat—as I am, for example. I cannot fit through. I must become narrow. My ego must grow thin, my flesh must grow thin, my wallet must grow thin; many things must grow thin so that I can fit and pass through. It is not easy. This is the road that leads to Heaven. The way is narrow and afflicted. When He says “afflicted,” He does not mean sad.
The road twists and turns, and its twists humble the driver or the passenger, whoever he may be. He does not know what will appear around the corner, and so he must remain watchful throughout his life, all along this road. It is not a straight road where you can see far ahead and travel without a care. You must keep watch at every moment, because you do not know where death lies in wait or where Satan has set his trap. A person must therefore be an overseer of his own life, constantly examining how he lives. Saint Nilus states it clearly here: “Blessed is he who has walked the narrow way.” Not the person who walked it only once—who on one occasion refused what his flesh, the world, Satan, his ego, or his own advantage desired—but the one who “has walked” it, who passed through this world along the narrow road.
He did not travel along the broad road. He was watchful, reached the end wearing a crown, and entered Heaven. The day of a person’s death ought to be his most beautiful day, for it too is called blessed: “Blessed is the way in which you walk today, for a place of rest has been prepared for you.” This way is blessed because it brings your journey to its end. You are no longer in danger; there is no possibility that tomorrow you will fall, be led astray, or cease to be watchful. Your course is finished; you are made secure and sealed, and you will pass into eternity. So I take this opportunity to tell you: let us not always seek what is easy. Let us not try to leap up a staircase that must be climbed step by step.
Many times, if we try to climb two or three steps at once, we find it difficult. We may tear our clothes or tumble down. We must secure A before proceeding to B. God, of course, allows these things to unfold slowly, while many people run and hurry. They hurry after the flesh, after the world, after conquest, after building; they want to become Diadochos of Photike, successors to knowledge, successors to... No! “And Jesus advanced”—that is how it was. “And Jesus advanced in age and wisdom.” What, then, should we human beings do? You have seen how it is at school: a child begins in kindergarten and passes into the first grade. In the old days we had the lower first class and the upper first class instead of kindergarten. Then the child goes into the second grade and the third, rising steadily, step by step. A person cannot leave primary school and go directly to university. He cannot.
People who possess neither the experience nor the knowledge of primary school in life want to become astronomers or shipowners immediately. What will they do? They will trample some people and crush others as they pass. They do not know how to make their way or what morality is. They will seize, steal, engage in schemes, and on and on. Perhaps they will end up in prison; perhaps someone will lose his mind; perhaps they will never reach the end. They suffer the fate of moths circling a light, which you sweep up with a dustpan the next morning. Some people are not careful, yet watchfulness is necessary. The responsibility therefore rests with parents who do not give their children the proper weapons and do not raise them “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord,” so that they remain grounded. Parents should speak to them about death and about the difficult moments of life, not only about easy things, and should help them not to seek things beyond their strength.
Parents should remember their own beginnings and that they themselves came on foot; they should not promise airplanes to their children, or else the child’s head will become an airplane before he ever does, and he will be destroyed. Many people who tried to make their life easy here—as some now put it—lost even this temporal life, not only eternity. They do not believe in eternity anyway. They speak of the Ascension and the Annunciation, yet remain down here on the ground.
They lose it because, for instruction to take hold and bear fruit, it must be accompanied by example. A child does not listen to what you say; he watches what you do. A few days ago, I went to Agrinio and stayed in a home there. The father complained to me that his son, who attends secondary school, was smoking—while the father himself was smoking in front of me. I said to him: “Let me tell you a story. Once, a father crab and a mother crab gathered their little crabs and gave them a lesson. They told them, ‘You disgrace us when you go outside, because you do not walk straight but sideways. Look how you are shaming us!’” The man understood; he was intelligent. “Do you understand,” I said to him, “what I am preparing for you now?”
“You are not preparing anything,” he said. “You are reminding me.” Then one little crab said, “Father, walk for us so that I can see how you walk.” And the father crab began walking sideways, just as we do. “So that is it,” the man said to me. “Of course,” I replied. “When your son sees you smoking, why should he not smoke too?” He had not understood that. If you, who first earn the money by the sweat of your brow, feel free to burn it this way, how much easier is it for someone who does not earn it to do the same? Instruction requires an example. When you speak to someone, you build with one hand. When you speak and support your words by your own example—when you do it first yourself—you build with both hands. Many parents, therefore, build with only one. “Why did you not go and pray?” they ask, while dear mother and father do not pray. At nine o’clock they get the child ready to go to the Church, while the parent does not go.
“Come here, take this money, and buy me a packet of cigarettes.” The child buys a packet for himself as well. And then there is all the fuss about doing one’s nails and so forth. It is time for the mother to do her nails; it is time for her to sit before the mirror. How can that mischievous little child fail to see these things and imitate them? “Man is an imitative creature,” educated people say. Is that not so? It is therefore a great lesson for a person to master himself and remember that one day he will depart from this world. He should not go up there with little horns and a tail, but with a crown—if he chooses to believe it. Remember, God has need of no one. Nor should anyone regard this teaching as burdensome, as people say. This is simply how things are.
I am explaining exactly how things are. Whether each person can do it, cannot do it at all, or does not wish to do it is his own concern. It does not affect Christ in any way. We go to the Church and hear: “If anyone wishes to come after Me...” That is all. I do not want your clever arguments or your opinion. Follow behind Me if you wish. Walk in My path so that you may enter eternity. If, in your freedom, you do not want this, I will not force you. Even at the Church I merely ring the bell. Should I send a policeman to drag you out of bed? Do I want you to become indignant, turn over on your other side, and blaspheme the one who woke you with the bell? Leave the person free and unafraid. If you wish, go into the Church. If you want to stay, stay; if you do not, there is a door on this side and another on that side—go out. God binds no one. The same is true of anyone who has come here: if you wish, remain; if not, do not. If you wish, listen; if not, do not. If you wish, accept it; if not, do not. God compels no one, and neither do I, as I speak to you now. I compel no one. I simply tell you how things truly are.
If you see these things rightly, strive to put them into practice. The way is narrow. Having children is a great undertaking. When you were married, you were given a cup. It is the cup of tribulations—not simply a cup of dark wine carried around the wedding table, but the cup of the tribulations of raising children. You will bring human beings into the Kingdom; they will fall ill, and some may die before you...
A person suffers, and so forth, in this world. No one promised you a life free of a thousand hardships. The way is narrow. And morally speaking, you cannot show up today with a few pennies and the next day appear with millions. Something will show; you must have done something, taken something belonging to another. Little by little, God will give it to you, if you need it. He will give you even more. Otherwise, you will begin to grow insensitive. Your soul will become lax, and your conscience will stretch. Your conscience must always correct you; it must remain sensitive.
It should alert you to the slightest thing. Electricians rub wires clean before joining them, so that the connection will be perfect. They remove the rust and clean away anything burned. A person must be like that and always pass along this narrow way. Virginity until marriage is a narrow way. Raising children after marriage is a narrow way.
The honest acquisition of money is a narrow way. A person’s conduct is a narrow way: how can he pass through this corrupt world without following it, when it seeks to sweep him along through fashion and a thousand other things? It is constricting. People will mock you, accuse you, and label you mad, or worse. Do you have the strength to pass through all this without paying heed...
And one day you will arrive up there.
So, “narrow and afflicted is the way.” This holy man had clearly grasped that truth, and he says: “Blessed is he who has traveled the narrow way”—the one who passed through the narrow lane. Do you remember Zacchaeus? The broad road hindered him, with the crowd and the whole world before him. So he took a side street, ran ahead, and found Christ. He saw Christ, spoke with Christ, and Christ sanctified and saved him. He went by the narrow way. That is how it is. This is life. The person who wants to live rightly will not reach the place where the world or his ego wants him to go. He may not rise as high in this world, but in the world to come he will rise higher, above the pleasures of this world. This is roughly what this holy man reminds us of. In his first...
His next beatitude is like a completion of the first, as you can see: “Blessed is he who tramples upon pleasures”—that is, who despises and conquers them—“for the demons tremble before him.” When Satan sees a person trampling upon pleasures, he trembles before him and fears him. And pleasures, as you know, include the gratification of the ego, self-interest, and the flesh. These are intertwined, different branches of the same thing. A person is called to conquer them. To gain such strength that Satan fears him, a person must in some measure attain that threefold discipline...
...which our Church and all the Saints teach: “Fasting, watchfulness, and prayer, receiving heavenly gifts.” Begin with fasting. You must make your eyes fast, your hands fast, your hearing fast, your sense of smell and your taste fast. You must fast. You must not allow all your senses to enjoy everything they desire. What is said, heard, seen, and found around us is so confused and so harmful that it does us no good. A person must be discerning. He must take only what is absolutely necessary and leave aside whatever harms him. He must not look at whatever comes his way, listen to whatever comes his way, or taste whatever comes his way. No. He must be discerning. Look at the animals: if there is a certain...
...plant they should not eat, they do not eat it. Where did they study? Where did they learn which plant is harmful? God placed their snout before them, and through their sense of smell they recognize it. It is directly above the body: they pass over that plant, move on to the next, and leave the first untouched. If God has endowed animals so richly that they can preserve themselves safely in this way, what should we rational human beings do? Every pleasure has its consequences. For the most part, pleasure is like a carob pod: for a moment, as you eat it, you taste and enjoy a little sweetness. But afterward there is only the hard pod. The carob pod is food for swine, not for man.
So it is with every pleasure. Take the man who drinks because he likes wine: he ends up vomiting in torment. Take the glutton: he vomits so that he can eat again. Take the prostitute or the fornicator—take anyone you please—they are never satisfied. These sins can never satisfy. They are carob pods: people taste a little sweetness for a moment and become buried in that pleasure. Pleasures are not ends in themselves; they are instruments. The pleasures of taste and sexual union are instruments. The pleasure of sexual union exists for the begetting of children, and the pleasure of taste exists so that we will eat and nourish the body. You have often seen, for example, that although we are hungry, we will not eat food without salt because it does not satisfy our taste.
Yet we bring out all the finery for the pleasure of the flesh and the pleasure of taste, and we pay no attention to what follows—the price to be paid, the ticket that must be bought. A person must therefore learn to despise these things and make them secondary. It is no great loss to go without them, especially when they may harm us. If, for example, something does not please them, let them fast from it. It does not satisfy you; your tongue takes no pleasure in it. Why, then, do we demand a thousand delicacies? If you put a thousand pieces of straw into your stomach, it will say, “I am full; I want no more straw.” The whole matter is simply getting it down the throat. That is all.
Sometimes, after you have already eaten, someone may bring you a choice morsel. I mentioned this just now. “Come, eat it; it is fresh.” Nothing more can go down, no matter how excellent the food being served at that moment may be. So the whole issue is getting it down; it is nothing else. It is a matter of pleasure. These two inches of the throat are the whole affair. And yet people refuse to fast. If they fasted and trampled upon the pleasure of food—I am not even speaking of carnal pleasure—this victory would lead to other victories over pleasure and over the flesh. But who thinks about this? We all strain and wonder how we can satisfy these pleasures, beginning with gluttony. Look at a table laid before us. How many dishes are there, when there ought to be only one? There ought to be one. How many are there, and why? Why all of this? To stir our appetite and make us eat more. And we even bear responsibility for encouraging it. A fine example!
“Enjoy your meal!” Who has no appetite, that you should wish him a good one? Someone drinks ten or twenty glasses of ouzo just to work up an appetite. Tell me, who has no appetite? When you tell someone who knows nothing of fasting, “Enjoy your meal,” it is like a curse. I would rather wish him a poor appetite so that he eats less; that would be a blessing. Yet if someone does not say “Enjoy your meal” to us, we take offense, even though we would merely have answered, “Thank you.” Where can one begin? How can one reason about it? People have tamed and bound these customs and passed them on to us. “For the demons tremble before him,” he says. A demon will not go and wrestle with such a person. I read in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers about a man who had been possessed by a demon for many years. The fathers took him...
...to many spiritual fathers, but no one succeeded in casting out the demon. At last they brought him to another man, who said: “Brothers and fathers, I do not have the gift of casting out demons, but I do have love. This brother has carried the demon within him for fourteen years. I pray that it may now leave him and come into me, so that he may rest for a while.” The demon came out of the possessed man and entered the other. The first went away healed, while the second remained possessed. Several years passed, and one day the devil came out...
...and began walking away like a black cat. “Ah,” the man said to him, “are you leaving?”
“I am not driving you away,” he told him. The devil replied, “A pig finds no relief in a dried-up place, and the devil finds no rest in flesh dried up by fasting.” Will a pig roll in a pit that is dry? No; it goes where the ground is wet. It wants soft mud in which to wallow. So too, he says, the devil cannot remain in flesh dried up by fasting. We measure ourselves by our waistlines and so forth: “He is thin—weak, ready to collapse, tormented.” Why? So that we can endure corruption? That is the reason. Fast for three days, if you wish—no longer, just three days. Do not eat or drink, and then I will ask you where the unlawful beds are.
What becomes of the nightclubs, the women, the secret apartments, and the secluded groves? Everything vanishes. All these things are fed by feasting. That is what nourishes them. All this corruption is sustained by indulgence. These are the pleasures of which this holy man says, “For the demons tremble before him.” The demons do not go to wrestle with such people. Let each person weigh this according to his own judgment. In his third beatitude, he says: “Blessed is he whose virtue is pure and whose soul is without hypocrisy, for he shall judge the world and shall not be judged with the world.” I do not know whether you grasp this.
I repeat: “Blessed is he whose virtue is pure and whose soul is without hypocrisy; he,” it says, “shall judge the world and shall not be judged with the world.”
People possess virtues, but their virtues are not pure. I give money, yet at the same time I take pride in giving it. I proclaim it to one person and then another. My virtues are not pure. I fast, and you see that I have this virtue, but I fast in order to save money. I do not fast and then “give the savings from my fast to the poor.” I should give it away: I will not eat today, and what I would have spent on food I will give as alms. Another person fingers his prayer rope in the street. It is good to use a prayer rope, but you do it so that others will see you. What you are doing is not pure. Your virtue is not pure. Do you understand?
You make your preparation, and others see you approaching, but your virtue is not pure. According to Basil the Great, “A good thing is not good unless it is done well.” Even the best thing, he says, is not good unless it is done in the right way. Great thoughtfulness and care are needed for it to be done well. Is it not good to go to Church? There is nothing better; the Psalmist calls such a person blessed. And yet for some it would have been far better not to go to Church. Did not the Apostles walk together with Christ? Yet when the Lord stopped for the woman with the issue of blood, He said, “Someone touched Me.” Peter replied, “What do You mean, someone? We are all pressing around You—you are wearing us out,” as we would say in everyday speech.
“I am speaking about someone in particular. I knew that power had gone out from Me. One person came with deliberate faith and touched Me—one person. That is the one I am speaking about.” How many people go to Church? How many work in the Church, serve in charitable societies, help build churches, join religious organizations, and do all sorts of remarkable things—yet on the day of judgment none of it will be found to count in their favor, because their virtues were not pure as Christ desires them to be. So Saint Nilus says, “Blessed is he who is pure in virtue and sincere in soul,” so that the soul may be beyond condemnation, without hypocrisy. “For he shall judge the world.” Such a person, he says, will judge the world.
Will he judge the world? Will Christ not judge the world? This is like what He said: “The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment.” Does He not say somewhere, “And they will condemn this generation”? I think it is in the tenth chapter of Matthew. He says, “The men of Nineveh will rise up with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” Christ must have said this in Capernaum. The Ninevites heard one sermon, repented, and were saved. You have heard so much and seen so much, yet you do not repent. Therefore, at the judgment they will stand as witnesses for the prosecution.
A person will say, “I could not do it.” But behold, there are witnesses against him. This is the meaning of what this holy man says here. They, he says, are going to judge the world, “and not be judged with the world.” They will not be condemned with the world; rather, they will stand apart, so to speak, as an example against it. People say that Christianity is impossible to live. But even if only one person had lived according to what Christ teaches—and it is not one, or two, or five, or tens, or hundreds, or thousands, but millions who have lived according to Christ’s teaching—even one would be enough to stand as a witness for the prosecution,
to condemn the whole world and consign it to Hell. There you have it, sir. I remember someone once speaking to me against the clergy. “Name one,” he said, “who did not leave money behind. None of them was saved,” and so forth. I answered, “Chrysostomos of Messinia.” “That is only one,” he said. If you ask me for a second, I will name a second. You asked me for one, and even one person who lived it is enough. How, then, can you tell me that what Christ and the Gospel proclaim cannot be lived or achieved? Look at the young woman or the young man who does live it. It may be a man, a married couple, a family, a clergyman—even if only one remains faithful. But shall I go further? Even if no one lived it, Holy Scripture and Christ did not make a mistake, nor did He lay down impossible
commands!
They chose not to, and so they failed—just as the first two human beings, Adam and Eve, chose not to. There was no one else; in their persons they were the whole human race. They were unwilling and did not succeed. They failed not because they were unable, but because they were unwilling and did not take heed. The proof is that when our Lord later came, He too, as man, was tempted in the wilderness. He faced the devil’s test alone in the wilderness, as if to say to them, “You also faced your test alone and failed; I face the test alone and prevail.” It can therefore be achieved, but you did not take heed.
So let us not deceive ourselves, and let no one mislead us into justifying ourselves. Let each person struggle within the measure of his abilities. My fingers are not all alike, nor are yours, yet each plays its own part, and together they form a beautiful whole. My toes are not all the same, nor are my teeth, but each has its purpose. Christ said the same about people. One can produce thirtyfold, another sixtyfold, and another a hundredfold. But everyone can produce something. One has one talent, another two, and another five. Each is responsible for what he has and what he can do. But you cannot accuse the teaching and say it is impossible. No, it is not impossible; it is possible. You too will be able to do your part,
if you struggle within the measure of your abilities. If you are a person of one talent—whether in strength, knowledge, sensitivity, or whatever gifts you possess—our Lord will not demand an account from you for five talents. He will ask you to account for the one. But He does require that one from you. Do not bury it in the earth. Do not concern yourself only with the flesh, only with the dust.
It must go deep within, into the soul’s innermost places. It needs cultivation. Ask Him to give you strength, so that you may put it into practice. Examples may be found even within our own homes. You may see five children who are like antichrists, and then one child—born of the same mother and father, attending the same school and living in the same surroundings—who is completely different. By his own free choice, he is entirely different. And many times...
the parents labored equally for all of them. Five rejected their parents’ counsels, while one kept them, and you can see the result. On the day of judgment, that child will stand as a witness for the prosecution against the rest of the family. Another such witness will be found in the neighborhood, another farther away, and so on. This is what he means here. That is why Christ says: “You people of Capernaum see Me here, bringing heaven down to earth through miracles. Yet tomorrow the Ninevites will rise and condemn you.” They will condemn this generation; they will be witnesses for the prosecution. Nothing more is needed. The fact that someone did it is proof. Therefore, you too could have done it. Further on, in his fourth beatitude, this holy man says: “Blessed is he whose manner of life is exalted.”
That is, one who leads a virtuous life—not an ordinary life, but a blameless and exalted one. “Blessed is he whose manner of life is exalted, but whose mind is humble.” This is connected with what we said earlier: a good thing is not good unless it is done well. John Climacus says somewhere, “One needs not only a humble bed, but also a humble mind.” A plain bed and sleeping on the floor are not enough if your mind is not humble. That is why he says here, “Blessed is he whose manner of life is exalted, but whose mind is humble.” My beloved, the way a person thinks is a very great matter. This is what our Lord sees. Many times, all of us spoil, poison, and cheapen our good work and good deeds because of our inward attitude. How many people believe that they are already saved! This is a sickness found among heretics. Approach a Protestant, for example, and he will tell you with certainty that he is saved because he has taken up a Gospel and reads it. He is saved, he says. A Jehovah’s Witness will tell you the same thing.
Anyone who immediately sets himself up as a judge, declares others lost, and considers himself saved has reached the very limits of pride.
A person must think humbly. Whatever he is, whatever he knows, whatever he has, and whatever he can do, he must believe that he is unworthy of it. Paul says, “If the righteous man is scarcely saved, where shall the rest of us appear?” How, then, can a person rest content because he has performed five good deeds and say, “I and my works”? How many works, after all? He had a few coins left over, gave someone a loaf of bread, or gave someone a garment. How can he parade this and say, “I did it”? Then you justify yourself and have no need of Christ, as though you could be saved apart from Christ. Christ is the One who saves man. Even if you did something good, you did not do it by yourself. Can this lamp flatter itself because it gives light? It shines because it is connected to the current. Let us turn off the switch and see.
A person must believe that he does nothing by himself. Whatever good he does, Christ does through him. That is why a humble mind is needed. See what John the Forerunner said: “He who comes after me has become greater than I. I am not worthy to loose the strap of His sandals.” What would we have said? What would we have said? “You know, I am His disciple. Do you know whom I am connected with? He works miracles, and I am with Him. If I am so close to Him, you understand what that makes me! After all, He does not keep just anyone beside Him.” Do you understand how far a person can fall? And how often, when we meet someone important on the street, we linger beside him; and if he pats us on the back, we keep him there like a public figure so that others may see us speaking with him.
We must humble our mind and disappear. If we exist, if we were born Christians, if we were raised as Christians, if we accomplish anything at all—even the little we possess belongs to Him. That is why Saint Nilus says here that it is not enough to lead a holy and exalted life; one must also have “a humble mind.” You have a child, beauty, a fine voice, a talent—you have this and that. None of it is yours. None of it is yours. Let the fuse below burn out, and everything stops. The pot that was boiling ceases to boil. The fan that was turning stops. The elevator that was rising comes to a halt and remains there. Everyone else is left in darkness.
Nothing works. Why? Because the fuse burned out. A tiny piece of wire worth scarcely a coin brought everything to a standstill. That is how utterly we depend upon Christ. You are deceived when you hear someone described as “self-made.” Ask him: how many people has he trampled underfoot? How many forests, how many libraries, how much of the world has he used as steps in order to climb up and call himself self-made? Who gave you wisdom? Does your head receive some special nourishment? Did you buy a first-quality brain? Who gave it to you? Everything is on loan; God gave it all. Therefore, humble yourself and bow your head. A little dizziness may come upon you, and you will begin striking out at people in the street. How many people have lost their reason? How many brilliant minds have become deranged and ended up confined in psychiatric hospitals? Humble yourself, O man. Have things gone well for you? Humble yourself.
Humble yourself. Are you praised for being handsome, swift, or capable? Humble yourself. Someone wants a woman brought over so he can show her what he owns. He opens his wardrobes and displays this and that. He swells with pride. Who are you? Your head is swollen with ego. Come to your senses. Consider the young person today. And these things are done by Christians—the very people Saint Nilus is speaking about here. Do not say, “This is the way of the world.” Leave the way of the world aside. He is speaking here about Christians. It is a great thing to have a humble mind. When people say something good about you, you should feel within yourself as though you are being emptied out. You are being emptied. “My God, deliver me.” Feel that you are vanishing, that you are being lost. If they applaud or esteem you, say, “My God, shelter me and cover me. I am being lost; I am in danger.” The world does not understand.
We are in greater danger from attacks that come from the right—from things that appear good—than from those that come from the left. We recognize the latter and guard against them. It is the things on the right, the praise of others, that cast us down. It is a great thing for a person to have a humble mind and understand his true worth: that he is nothing but a scrap, in the fullest sense of the word. If Christ were to take back the gifts with which He endowed him, everything would be gone. But the ego will not permit this. It claims the person for itself. “Blessed,” he says, “is he whose manner of life is exalted, but whose mind is humble.” And he adds: “For he imitates Christ and shall sit with Him.” Such a person, he says, imitates Christ and will sit together with Christ. He resembles Christ. “For he imitates Christ and shall sit with Him.”
May all Christians attain this, because this inward attitude, this ego that says, “I belong to this association,” “I belong to that organization,” “I do this”—all of it must go, because it takes control and ruins everything else. Do whatever you can, and keep yourself hidden as much as possible. In spiritual matters, you must never raise your head above the parapet. Act as you would on a battlefield. You never step out openly in front; you remain with the others and move from rock to rock for protection. That is exactly how you must conduct yourselves in this case. Let me give you one more, in the few minutes remaining to me. It is what Saint Nilus says in his fifth beatitude: “Blessed is he from whose tongue the law...”
“...never departs”—that is, the law of God never leaves his mouth and is never separated from it. “For God will not depart from that man’s dwelling.” Whoever does not separate himself from the law of God will not be separated by God from His dwelling. There is a beautiful exhortation to Joshua: “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth.” Morning, noon, and night, a person must always remain connected with it. The human tongue must not speak like a wild beast. It must speak what is right and edifying. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”
You cannot simply say whatever comes into your head. You cannot use foul language. You cannot make careless jokes. All these faculties were not given to you for such things. And the way you express yourself reveals what you contain within yourself. When you see a chimney pouring out coal smoke and soot, you cannot say, “You know, it runs on electricity down below; it burns electric power.” But can you not see what is coming out of the chimney? Clearly, it is burning coal. A person brings out whatever he has in his basket. So he cannot pretend otherwise. Do you hear me? You pour out so much filth—how can you say that it is not inside you?
I will speak to you afterward. Your tongue, he says, must remain connected with the law of God. A person must always pray and take care that his speech is salt—that it seasons what he says. Salt gives flavor; it seasons. Salt also preserves and prevents decay. You know, there are many young people who have gone astray, and when they find themselves facing failure and turmoil, they complain: “There was no one there for me.” Many times young people have said to me:
“What you are telling me, neither my mother nor my father ever told me. They bought me a pair of shoes every week and a suit every week, but no one ever spoke to me as you have.” No one seasoned the child’s soul or corrected his way of thinking. They put salt on things to firm them up, yet they leave his soul unsalted. Therefore, if a person has no connection with the law of God—and the law of God is the word of God: “Do not do this; do this. Do not do that; do that”—he forgets that God gave this law not for the angels, nor unlawfully or irrationally. He gave it rightly, and it secures man’s salvation.
So when a person does not read, and when his tongue is used for other things instead of reading and passing on what he has learned, he has nothing to give. For a person to give nourishment to others, he must first be nourished himself. If you expect milk from a ewe, you must feed her. A person, then, must first take in nourishment. For me to come here tonight and say five words to you, I had to take in a million words so that I could give you five. If I had not first been nourished, I would have had nothing to give you. And if you are not nourished by what I give you, or by what we can read in the books of our Fathers and of our Orthodox Church, you will not be able to give anything to others. It is always a beautiful thing for a person to be well read in the things of God, so that he can say what Christ said to the devil: “It is written; it is written; it is written.” But we do not know the Scriptures. Did you hear what a gentleman asked me earlier?
He asked about adultery. Scripture speaks with overwhelming force against it. People do not know, because they have never taken Scripture in their hands and read what it says: why God gave His commandments; that divorce is not permitted, fornication is not permitted, adultery is not permitted, sexual relations between men are not permitted, masturbation is not permitted—these things are not permitted. A person has not read it; he speaks on hearsay and does not know. And once, when people asked Christ which man would have the woman as his wife, He said, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures.” For many people, Scripture is a sealed letter, left unopened, even though it contains an entire treasure, an inheritance both for this present life and for eternity. Yet they have never opened it, and so it bears no fruit in them. Why was the tongue given to us? To praise God, to read and praise God through the sacred texts and in every other way. That is why this holy man says here: “Blessed is he...”
“...from whose tongue the law does not depart”; it has not gone away or become separated from him. “For God does not depart from that man’s dwelling.” Therefore, the person who remains connected with the law of God will also put it into practice as he learns it, and in this way he will dwell in God’s tabernacle. He will know where God has gone: that Christ has entered there as the Forerunner on our behalf and awaits us. These are all blessings that he will gain. We shall stop here for tonight and, God willing, continue on another evening. I pray that the intercessions of this saintly man may help us, both as individuals and as families.

Οι άνθρωποι έχουν αρετάς. Όμως οι αρετές τους δεν είναι καθαρές. Δίδω εγώ χρήματα. Ταυτόχρονα όμως έχω και εγωισμό που δίδω. Του το φωνάζω και του αλλουνού. Δεν είναι καθαρές οι αρετές μου. Νηστεύω εγώ και με βλέπεις εσύ ότι έχω μια αρετή, νηστεύω, αλλά νηστεύω για να αποταμιεύω. Δεν νηστεύω και «τὸ περίσσευμα τῆς νηστείας τοῖς πένησι χορηγῶ». Να τα δώσω. Δεν θα πάω σήμερα, και εκείνο που θα έτρωγα θα το δώσω ελεημοσύνη. Τραβάει κομποσχοίνι άλλος στον δρόμο. Καλό να τραβάς κομποσχοίνι, αλλά τραβάς για να σε βλέπουν οι άλλοι. Δεν είναι καθαρό αυτό που κάνεις. Η αρετή σου δεν είναι καθαρή αυτή. Συνεννοείσαι;
Δεν μπορεί να λες ό,τι να ’ναι. Δεν μπορεί να λες βωμολοχίες. Δεν μπορεί να λες αστεία, απερίσκεπτα. Δεν σου δόθηκαν αυτά τα όργανα όλα για αυτά τα πράγματα. Και είναι απόδειξη ότι, εφόσον ούτω εκφράζεσαι, είναι απόδειξη ότι ούτω περιέχεις. Διότι δεν μπορείς να πεις, όταν βλέπεις μια καμινάδα και βγάζει εκεί πέρα κάρβουνο, μουντζούρα κλπ., «Ξέρετε, κάτω είναι με ρεύμα αυτό, ηλεκτρικό καίει». Μα αυτό δεν βλέπετε πάνω στην καμινάδα; Τι κάρβουνο καίει αυτό το πράγμα. Ο άνθρωπος ό,τι έχει στο πανέρι του, από αυτό που έχει στο πανέρι του, από αυτό βγάζει έξω. Δεν μπορεί λοιπόν να λέγει ότι «μην είσαι κυφαστής», λέγω. Με ακούς; Τόση βρωμιά βγάζεις έξω, που δεν τη βγάζεις;
Ο άνθρωπος λοιπόν, όταν δεν διαβάζει, όταν αυτή η γλώσσα του χρησιμοποιείται για άλλα πράγματα, όχι να διαβάσει και από αυτά να μεταδώσει... Διότι, για να μεταδώσει ο άνθρωπος, πρέπει να φάει πρώτα. Για να περιμένεις γάλα από την προβατίνα, πρέπει να την ταΐσεις. Ο άνθρωπος θα φάει λοιπόν. Για να έρθω εγώ απόψε να σας πω εδώ πέντε λόγια, έφαγα εγώ ένα εκατομμύριο λόγια για να σας δώσω εσάς πέντε. Αν εγώ δεν έτρωγα πρώτα, δεν θα σας έδινα τίποτα εσάς. Και αν εσείς δεν φάτε από αυτά που σας δίνω εγώ ή από αυτά που μπορούμε να διαβάσουμε στα βιβλία των Πατέρων μας, της Εκκλησίας μας της Ορθοδόξου, δεν θα μπορέσετε να δώσετε στους άλλους. Όμορφο είναι πάντοτε ο άνθρωπος να είναι διαβασμένος απάνω στα θέματα του Θεού, να μπορεί να πει εκείνο που είπε ο Χριστός στο διάβολο: «Γέγραπται γάρ, γέγραπται γάρ, γέγραπται γάρ». Εμείς δεν ξέρουμε. Είδατε τι με ρωτούσε γρηγορότερα ένας κύριος;
