Summary

The Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete because He comforts, encourages, sanctifies, and continues Christ’s work among believers. Love, patience, kindness, self-control, forgiveness, and other virtues are fruits of the Holy Spirit rather than achievements of unaided human effort. Earthly life is brief preparation for eternity, and Christians must receive the Church as their mother, God as their Father, and Christ as their brother and life-giving Savior.

Let me begin with the written questions, and answer an oral question given to me by a young boy—a very young boy—while I was setting up the equipment. He says, “I would like you to tell us, Panagopoulos, why the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete.” Now, this may be his own question, or it may not be. In any case, I will answer it. “Paraclete” means Comforter: He consoles us, comforts us, and encourages us. And the Holy Spirit is the One who continues to act on Christ’s behalf and sets right all the weaknesses of man.

That is why we call Him the Paraclete. This is not something we invented; we did not give Him that name. Christ Himself gave it when He spoke with His disciples and said, “It is better for you that I depart. I will go, and I will send you another Paraclete, who will remain with you always, until the end of the age.” And indeed, the Holy Spirit remains in the Church and performs all her works. He sanctifies everything and cleanses everything. He is the “Holy Immortal” whom we invoke in “Holy God”: Holy God—the Father; Holy Mighty—Christ, through whom all things were made; Holy Immortal—the Holy Spirit, who delivers from corruption and bestows immortality, the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

Christ was our first Paraclete. I do not know whether you ever read this, but the Holy Spirit is not the only One called the Paraclete; in Holy Scripture the Lord is also called the Paraclete. John the Evangelist, the disciple called the beloved, wrote the Gospel and the Apocalypse, and he also wrote catholic epistles that are included in the New Testament. In one of these epistles he exhorts the people, saying, “My little children, I beg you not to sin. But if sin should enter in and someone sins through human weakness, we have a Paraclete with the Father, Jesus the Righteous.” We have someone who pays the debt for us.

Someone who takes it upon Himself, someone who settles the debt. Thus Christ is called the Paraclete, and consequently the Holy Spirit is the second Paraclete. We know many things about the Most Holy Theotokos—if indeed we know them. We know many things about Christ—again, if we truly know them. We also speak often about God. Yet we do not speak about the Holy Spirit, even though He has undertaken all the work of the Church today on Christ’s behalf and in Christ’s name. He sanctifies the water in the blessing of water, so that it does not spoil. We sprinkle it throughout our homes, and through it people and animals are healed. He sanctifies the oil in Holy Unction, and it heals people’s illnesses. He is the One who sanctifies...

The bread and makes it the Body, and the wine and makes it the Blood, so that we have the Body and Blood of Christ, of which the people partake. The Holy Spirit does all these things. The priest says, “Send down, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Holy Gifts here offered, and make this bread the precious Body of Your Christ. Amen. And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Your Christ. Amen. Changing them by Your Holy Spirit.” It is done through the Holy Spirit. And unfortunately, I repeat, we know almost nothing about this Paraclete. The day after tomorrow, at Pentecost, we will kneel, but we kneel merely out of habit. What a beautiful image we have here: only a few days from now, as many days again after Pascha...

We are already approaching the feast. In a few more days we shall be at Pentecost. This Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, will descend as a dove once again upon the Church. And since you have reminded me of this good subject, I will take the opportunity to say how many of us ought not to kneel on that day. There is a beautiful image that I want you to know. When the Ark was upon the waters during the flood, Noah wanted to discover whether the rain had stopped and whether the waters had begun to recede. How could he find out? He opened the window of that vessel, that great ship, and released a raven.

It went out, and they waited to see what would happen. If it found no dry land, the raven would return and settle again upon the Ark. From this Noah would conclude that the flood was still raging. Of course, when the raven went out, it found corpses floating on the surface of the waters—the bodies of animals and of people, educated and prominent people among the great multitude who had drowned.

The bird flew down and went on flying, but it found no clean place on which to rest its feet. So it was compelled, we are told, to return to the Ark; and the Patriarch Noah stretched out his hand and took the dove back inside. In this image, it is the Church that sends the Holy Spirit out to mankind, into the modern world. Will we be clean when the day after tomorrow comes, so that the Holy Spirit may rest upon us? The priest will kneel, open the book, and begin reading those beautiful prayers and concluding petitions of Basil the Great. He will beseech the Holy Spirit to come upon us and take charge of all that concerns us—our personal and family affairs, our learning and every aspect of our lives, the elderly, the young, and everyone. The Holy Spirit will go forth and fly among us.

Will He rest upon any one of us? Might He find here bloodstained hands that kill their own children? Might He find elsewhere a filthy tongue or unclean hands? Might He find theft, fraud, dishonor, fornication, adultery, and every other kind of sin? I do not know. I do not know. Where will He rest? And if He finds no place, He will return, and all the Church’s labor in our kneeling that day will have been in vain. Our relationship with the Holy Spirit is therefore of great importance. The more a person is cleansed through metanoia—repentance—and confession before properly appointed spiritual fathers, who possess the authority to bind and loose our sins, the more he allows the grace of God to remain with him. Those of us who live without a conscience are the ones who drive away the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Wait.

For when the grace of the Holy Spirit departs, the power of the devil enters into us and throws us into confusion. Then man will do things that animals and beasts do not do. He chose the other power within himself and made room for it; he drove grace away. Sin is what puts grace to flight. Just as smoke drives away a bee, so sin drives away the grace of the Holy Spirit. This is the One called the Paraclete in our Church, and these are the works He performs. And when a person receives the Body and Blood of Christ, according to Basil the Great, he receives twenty-three gifts. According to Paul, the Holy Spirit...

In Galatians 5:22, is said to produce fruit. Many people say, “You must have love.” But this is not a simple matter. Where are we to find love? From what greengrocer’s shop can you go and buy it? Tell me! Love—and forgiving one another. How can you forgive someone if you do not possess the Holy Spirit? Can you forgive without grace? Tell me, can you? Where will you find the strength to show solidarity with others? Where will you find the strength to offer it? Where will you find that strength? All these things are fruits of the Holy Spirit. Read Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two, and see: “But the fruit of the Spirit...” How does it begin? Is joy first? Love, patient endurance, kindness, self-control, and the rest. All these are fruits of the Holy Spirit. If you do not have this branch, this tree...

Can you produce these good fruits? You ought to do something good, since you have been born of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is first given beginning with Baptism, and He continues to be given and to work within a person through the Holy Eucharist. People who do not receive Holy Communion do not receive this nourishment from the Holy Spirit. The antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—is not Holy Communion; it is the blessing of the Theotokos. The antidoron we receive points to the presence of Christ and bears the blessing of the Theotokos. And I take this opportunity to teach the ladies today, who take such good care of their fingernails but will not make a prosphoron to take to the Church, while buying their bread ready-made from the bakery. You did not ask about the bread.

But you yourselves should prepare the prosphoron in your home. Make clean dough and take it to the Church, so that everyone may benefit. Prayer, the Last Things, Holy Scripture, the Ascension, the Apocalypse, the Resurrection—prepare a prosphoron in such a spiritual state. We shall understand the harm we are doing only when we die and go to the other side, while those left behind behave in the same way. Then we shall ask, “Why will no one offer anything for me? Why will no one give me even this portion?” Then you will understand its power. These things I am telling you are essential, and people need to know them.

Since the subject has come up, make sure you obtain a kneading trough and a sieve for your home. Especially today, when everything is available and our kitchens contain so many things—whole dowries compared with what girls possessed in the old days.

Find someone to teach you, keep yourself clean, and prepare a little prosphoron so that, through the Holy Spirit, this small offering may be changed. It can be very small, but it should bear the seal: Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the nine ranks, and two further sections from which the portions for the saints may be taken. This is not something difficult for you. Listen to me. In a certain village there was a widowed woman who knew that none of the ladies or young women in the surrounding villages would condescend to prepare a prosphoron. Only this elderly woman was willing to undertake it. Despite her poverty, she would make ten or twelve prosphora...

So that the priests would have offerings for the Prothesis. One night the Most Holy Theotokos came to her, placed a gold ring upon her hand, and said, “This hand shall perform this work of preparing the prosphoron.” The woman awoke and saw the ring upon her hand, just as happened to Saint Catherine, if you have read her Life. Indeed, that is exactly what happened to Catherine. The elderly woman rose and ran up to a nearby monastery to present this grace of the Theotokos. Frightened, she knocked at the door; the abbess came out, and the woman told her what had happened. If you want to bring this blessing into your home, do so. At least every Saturday evening, take an offering to the Church together with the names of your departed.

In this way you prepare a richly blessed Saturday and Sunday for yourselves, and indeed every day. When you yourselves depart this life, who will bring offerings for you there? Then you will understand what it means to do this while we are still here, though now we are indifferent and act as if we know nothing, as though only we who are living existed. In the Divine Liturgy, it is not only we who are present. There are the living, the Church militant upon earth, but certainly also the departed. They are there, waiting for us who remain here. Upon the holy diskos are the whole of heaven and earth. Christ is in the center, the Most Holy Theotokos beside Him, and the saints around them. We are within the church building, alive, and before us there are also two little groups of commemorative portions.

Why do people not understand these things? They sit at a distance and say, “Father, the mouse ate the bread.” Where did it eat the bread? Things like that happen. Satan is cunning; he has consumed their understanding. Forgive me for digressing, but because we were speaking about the Holy Spirit, these things had to be said. I came today for the final lesson of the week, and our subject is the grace of the Holy Spirit. If, then, a person desires it...

He must take care to preserve purity—that is, not to sin—and grace will remain with him, always illuminating him, always moving him toward what is good, always consoling and comforting him. Other people, those who do not have the grace of the Holy Spirit upon them, can go so far as suicide. The more shameless, grave, and bloodstained their sins become, and the more they sin, the more grace departs. Then Satan drives them out of their senses and brings them to the point of killing, smashing things, and committing all kinds of acts. These, then, are a few brief points in answer to your question about why the Holy Spirit is called the Paraclete.

Another note I see here concerns beginners. Let me mention one aspect: are smoking, card-playing, football pools, lotteries, and gambling in general wrong, especially for men, and even for women? This question should not even have needed to come here. Everyone knows that these are ugly things, not good things. Yet today we distort them and make idols of them. Men follow along, every last one, and we used to treat smoking as proof of manhood: “I’m a man, so I smoke.” And now women smoke as well, and have fallen into the same degradation.

So is it really a mark of manhood that you smoke and become the slave of a little weed? It is a craving, an attachment, a weakness. Are you supposed to have the right to smoke simply because you are a man? Smoking is a serious matter; it causes terrible harm in many ways. I see that today the state itself is undertaking a campaign to educate the public. In prominent places there are signs saying, “Smoking or cancer—choose one; the two cannot be separated.” And yet people, especially the young, smoke to prove that they are grown men—and now the girls do it too. Older people smoke because they are troubled; young people make themselves cigarettes and smoke. Once a man grows up and troubles overtake him, he supposedly thinks of nothing else.

Read what medical science says about it. Yet you pay no attention, and you keep inhaling your own medicine—your poison. You see it and still go on your way. And are we supposed to hold such people in esteem? They stand there with a cigarette in their hand and expect me to call her a lady and him a gentleman. Thank you.

One person inhales this, another that, as though it were indispensable. How can we condemn hashish users, those who smoke marijuana or take other drugs? Are you not an addict yourself? Of course you are! Just look at what happens to you without it. Can I say otherwise? You cannot manage without coffee. Are you not addicted? What will you do? What has caffeine done to you? Some people need coffee continually, all day long; another spends the whole day with his pipe. He cannot give up coffee without replacing it with something else. He puts a pinch into his mind, as it were, and then we go home. We all have our fallen self, and we pay tolls to the devil through the weakness by which he controls us. And then you see a person behaving like a madman.

He makes it and consumes it, but does not pay the cost. Let us refuse to pay for it, so that it may leave us.

My child.

In the twentieth century, how can such things still escape our notice? Are we any better today? What difference is there? Many people are even distressed when they travel because they cannot find what feeds their addiction. A friend once said to me, “One day, take a taxi, my friend.” I am a friend and I work. “Whatever I earn,” he says, “you and I will share.” As for those things you see here, however strange our situation may be, we shall clean them up and do our work. We shall put our affairs in order.

Today, inside the restaurant, you come out cooked through, as though from a ship’s hold, just to make bread rings. We shall get our work done.

These things must be said plainly and forcefully at the same time, so that you may understand and not lose courage. In the only...

One day a Christian went to buy meat from a young Turkish butcher. In that butcher’s shop there were two large cleavers and a great wooden chopping block on which he cut the meat. There was also another board, perhaps four fingers thick or more, with small carved figures upon it. What was it doing there? The Christian asked to take it and was prepared to pay for it. It was a small, red-stained piece of wood.

The block was from my own town. After speaking with the Turkish butcher, the man said, “What do you want for it? Give me that piece of wood.” “What do you want it for?” the butcher asked. And the man took the block away with him.

On the other side, she said that the image had to be taken away. Once she received the image, she cleaned what she could see, treating it, I suppose, with petroleum jelly and whatever else was needed to clean it and uncover it. And there appeared a most beautiful image of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy).

What had been hidden upon the image of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) was revealed. And the image said: “If you took me from the Turkish butcher’s chopping block and brought me here only to cense me with the devil’s incense, take me back there at once. I prefer the blood.”

“I prefer to lie beneath the cleaver on the butcher’s block rather than remain here while you cense me with the devil’s incense.” Today we live in homes that may have a single icon—I am not asking for many—yet what kind of home is it? The head of the household may offer incense in the evening and at other times, whether someone is ill or troubled, and then bring in the devil’s own incense. The question is this: did the devil tempt our Christ and ask Him to bow down, promising to give Him dominion? A possessed man once asked a priest, “Tell me: how do you offer incense to your Christ, and how do you offer incense to us?”

“All of you—and when has anyone ever offered incense to you like that?” The devil replied: “When? Do you not know? No one forgets your Christ. But people offer incense to me through their own ego. You yourselves cense me, the devil.” People offer incense to themselves and are in turn enveloped by it. The world does not understand, and one person cannot endure another. Today a woman has lost her sense of shame and turned her back on modesty. A son is called dishonorable if he still preserves his chastity, and a daughter if she preserves her virginity. Everything is being overturned very quickly. And then you cry out, “Most Holy Theotokos!”

We put this in the basket as well. A dog once touched me, yet it never grows old, because it has the Lord, the God above all gods.

A person must never become overly familiar with the Church. He must always enter with awe and the fear of God. I do not know whether you have noticed that the petition is offered for those who enter with the fear of God.

“For those who enter it with faith, let us pray to the Lord.” The prayer offered in the Church is not for those who come without the fear of God—that is, without reverence, without considering where they are going, before whom they are appearing, and to whom they are addressing themselves. Therefore, to receive what God offers His children through the Church, His children must be conscious of what they are doing and prepare themselves accordingly. For during the doxology, among other things, we say the following to God.

“Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, even as we have hoped in You.” The measure in which we have believed in You, honored You, taken You seriously, purified ourselves, and prepared ourselves—the kind of vessel we have brought before the God of purity, humility, and awe—determines what we are ready to receive. If someone enters the church merely because it is a feast, some other celebration, a festival, a Mystery, Holy Matrimony, or something similar, while his mind is occupied with other things, he not only receives nothing but also adds a debt to his account.

He adds to his account of sins. This is a matter for Holy Confession, so that this sin may be cleansed, because no sin is wiped away without confession. Every believer, then, must understand what this Church is that he enters. If we are going to appear before some important person, we consider where we are going, how we will stand, what we will wear, and how we will address him. And if it is our first visit and we do not know, we ask. But here we are going to appear before the King of kings. We are going to appear before the Queen of all, the Lady and Queen of the Angels. Here we also stand before the cherubim and seraphim, the thrones, dominions, powers, and authorities. How, then, should a person...

...enter and conduct himself? This is what should concern every Christian who wants his passage through this world to bear good fruit. For let us not be deceived: we did not come into this world simply to live. We came in order to die, and we die in order to live.

“We have no lasting city,” says the Apostle Paul, “but we seek the city that is to come.” That is our homeland. And when, after our death, the chanter brings us here in prayer, we plead: “Grant me the homeland for which I long; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” Man is not a permanent inhabitant of the earth, as our learned people tell us. He is only a tenant here; he lives here on borrowed time.

And whenever the Landlord gives him notice, he must leave. He brought nothing with him, and he will take nothing away. The grave is not the end, but the beginning of a life that has no end. Whether a person attains that life depends upon the life he lives here. Even if his earthly life lasts 960 years, like Methuselah’s, or 930 years, like Noah’s—or as long as Adam’s—it is only a firefly’s flash compared with eternity. When we lift the lid from a pot and a wisp of steam rises and vanishes, that is exactly what human life is like. Even if it lasted not merely the thousand years I mentioned, but thousands of years, it would still be no more than that beside eternity. And yet this brief instant, this firefly’s flash, has the power to take hold of eternity, to possess it, and to reign over it.

It wins eternity. But this happens only if a person is watchful in this world and conducts himself within the Church, in this sacred place, as Christ desires—with the fear of God. “For those who enter it with faith, let us pray to the Lord.” More generally, if a person wants God as his Father, he must have the Church as his mother and Christ as his brother. Whoever does not have the Church as his mother does not have God as his Father or Christ as his brother. This house belongs neither to me nor to you; it is the house of God. Do you remember how Christ answered His Most Holy Mother when, after losing Him for three days, they found Him at the Temple at the age of twelve? “My child, why have You done this to us?” she asked.

“Your father and I have been distressed and in anguish these past days.” And Christ answered her: “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” He corrects His Most Holy Mother, because Joseph is not His Father. His Father is the One whose Temple it is. “Did you not know,” He says, “that I must be about My Father’s business?” Therefore, if Solomon’s Temple—the type—belonged to His Father, how much more does this Church belong to Him, the Church He watered with His own Blood and purchased with His own Blood, as Paul writes in his epistle. Even today, within this Church, He offers His Blood to heal these little birds called human beings, who fall into the claws of Satan. I do not know whether you have noticed that beautiful passage...

...which is sung among the Lamentations on Great Friday. It says: “Like the pelican, O Word (Logos), You were wounded in Your side.” When a serpent bites the pelican’s young, the bird pierces its own side and gives them its blood to drink, restoring them to life. In the same way, You gave life to Your dead through the streams of Blood flowing from Your side.

That blood gives life to the young that have been bitten by the serpent—that is, by Satan, the ancient serpent. Only the Blood of Christ revives us and gives us life to drink; and more than that, do you know what it makes us? Children of the King. For unless we receive within ourselves the Blood of Christ the King, how can we become children of the King and inherit His Kingdom?

“Inherit the Kingdom of My Father.” The Kingdom is not inherited by ordinary, earthly people. They must become royal children; they must have royal blood within them. Who, then, can become fit to inherit the Kingdom unless he shares in the Blood of Christ the King—the royal Son who gives His Blood and restores to life the little birds bitten by the serpent? And yet, outside the Church, even now in the twentieth century, when there is so much knowledge about so many astonishing things, these truths have remained no more than outward forms. People neither know them nor wish to learn them. For everything else, they will read whole encyclopedias.

They study, attend private lessons and colleges at home and abroad, and undergo every kind of training. They strain their eyes and wear out their trousers sitting at a desk. But they do not want to hear anything about the Church; they consider such matters unnecessary. A person thinks coming to Church is simply a matter of punching an attendance card: “Here I am; I showed up. Look, I lit my candle.” As though God needed his candle! If it is made of wax, the wax came from God’s own bees. God needs neither your candle nor mine, neither your oil nor your gifts nor the buildings you erect. God lacks nothing; He is complete in Himself. It is we who need God. Does the sun need us? Does it need us at all? The sun says, as it were: “If you wish, come and receive my life-giving rays and all the blessings that flow from a bright sun in a sunlit sky.”

Does the sun need you? Never come out, then; stay hidden from the sunlight and die. You need the sun; the sun does not need you. Many people likewise imagine that they are doing God a favor when they come to Church and harming Him when they do not. They do indeed offend God if they do not come to Church properly, because the Church is a two-edged sword: it cuts in both directions. If you come prepared and remain with the fear of God throughout the Divine Liturgy, it bears good fruit for you. But if you come without the fear of God merely to make an appearance, arriving whenever you please and leaving whenever you please—as though the Church were a polling station where you may come and go at any hour—or if you take the antidoron, the blessed bread after Liturgy, from the candle stand and leave without remaining to kiss the priest’s blood-stained hand and receive his blessing, do you think it is God whom you harm?

Do you harm anyone else? You harm your own self. The Church is a great teacher and a great blessing. She receives us and brings us in when we are born. She sends her priest to read the prayers over us. She baptizes us, buries us in the baptismal font, and gives us new birth, because we are born dead on account of ancestral sin. She blesses us throughout our whole life.

She feeds us with Christ’s Body and Blood so that we may become children of the King, cleansing away what is Adamic within us, so that tomorrow we may be in a state to be raised by Him. If you read the Gospel, open, if you wish, to John, chapter 6, verse 54, and see what you find there. You will find this: “He who eats My flesh”—not he who ate it once many years ago, but he who eats it continually—“and drinks My blood,” regularly, “abides in Me.”

“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” It is impossible for remains that have been nourished with the Body and Blood of Christ to remain in the grave. Just as the Body of Christ did not remain in the tomb, neither will any person who becomes a brother of Christ, who is God, and thus a child of God. We must therefore see the Church as our mother and this place as holy ground, which teaches us so much and offers us so much. But we pay no attention. We pay no attention. The steamroller of habit prevents us from noticing what we say and what we promise—things that ought to make us tremble. I will mention two of them, which are said quietly two or three times and also, of course, aloud.

They are found in the petitions of peace. In one of these petitions the priest says: “Let us ask of the Lord that the whole day may be perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless.” On our behalf, the chanter answers: “Grant this, O Lord.” Yes, grant us such a day.

A holy day.

A peaceful, perfect, and sinless day. Take note: we answer, “Yes, grant this, O Lord.” And I ask you: some among us have been attending Church for five years, others for ten, twenty, thirty, fifty, or eighty, depending on their age. But which of us has ever thought of turning into reality what he asked of God? Which of us has ever lived even one day...

We merely said to Him in theory, “Yes, that is what we want.” But what do you do as soon as you leave—or even while you are still inside? Do you make any effort to keep the day perfect and holy? Do you guard your eyes, ears, hands, mouth, and all your senses, keeping them pure? A holy day: holy means pure; that is what the word means. Perfect, holy, and peaceful. As soon as people leave the Church, it is enough merely to pass by their houses—not even to enter them—to hear anger, rage, shouting, endless arguments and accusations, telephone gossip, and everything we see and hear in the neighborhood.

Has anyone said, “Today I will do it. Give me the strength, O Lord, to make at least this one day—one day in my whole life—a holy day”? These things are not even considered. What, then, will happen? How long will we make a fool of God? How long will we mock Him? Remember what He says: “How long shall I bear with you?” Yet He still bears with us. He makes His sun rise for us; He gives us oxygen, rain, light, food—what does He not give us? And we give Him nothing. Everything depends upon Him. If He chooses to close the heavens, we are finished. If He chooses to shut off the sun and lower its shutters, we are finished. Everything is under His authority, yet we misuse it all without even acknowledging or considering Him.

What I am saying is true, though I do not know whether you have ever noticed it, because unfortunately these fundamental things escape us. We dare to call Him Father. Have you ever listened to the words said before the Our Father? “And count us worthy, Master, with boldness and without condemnation to dare to call upon You, the God of Heaven, as Father, and to say...” We dare to call You Father—Father! But is it wrong to call God Father? Is God truly your Father? Can you claim that the king is your father if you are not a child of the king? How can you have God as your Father? And if God is your Father, do you resemble Him in any way? Do you resemble Him in longsuffering, purity, love, forbearance, or forgiveness? In what way do you resemble God?

You cannot say that a rotten fruit comes from this tree. Can it truly come from this tree? This tree bears good fruit. These are the things that should concern us from the moment we enter the Church until the moment we leave. How long will God put up with us? I think the time has come for us to learn these things. The Church is not a matter of a few outward observances. “Light a candle for me when you go; I have to go to work.” Can you not give one little hour to come to Church? “But I light my candle.” What does that candle you light actually say? Have you ever considered what that candle means? Woe to us! That candle will lead you to Hell, because you do not live out what the candle signifies. Let me take this opportunity to tell you: the candle is an outward declaration.

Its meaning depends on where and when you light it. If you light it beside the kollyva, you are declaring that from these dead grains a human being will one day rise again: “I believe in the Resurrection.” If you hold it at the Resurrection service, you are declaring that you yourself have risen. If you light the baptismal candle, you are declaring that this person who was dead has already risen. But when you enter here, you take this candle in your hand and place it upon the candle stand. That stand has sockets above, a central shaft descending from them, and three feet on which it rests. Do you know what this act declares? “I, who was once dead”—for you take the candle out of something like a coffin. I do not know whether you have noticed those sockets there...

The candle sockets are shaped like coffins. And so you bring yourself forth from the coffin. “I was dead; I was a tomb. But now, through Christ, I am alive. I give light and warmth; I bring good to others; and I melt away upon the altar of Christ, leaving no trace of malice behind in this world.” The central shaft descending from above represents Christ.

It rests upon three feet because, although God came down to earth, God is one—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Our usual candle stands are not made correctly. Above, they ought to have three further sockets, representing God in three hypostases; and One of the three hypostases came down to earth. This is Christ, who descended to earth and yet remains with the Father and the Holy Spirit within the unity of the Holy Trinity. He who descended to earth has enabled us, who were once dead, to shine as well.

What, then, does this act declare? You light your candle and say, “Through Christ, I am light.” We are the light of the world by God’s grace. We are light—not because we are beautiful, radiant, well groomed, and carefully dressed. Our life itself must be light. Does our life enlighten another person, or does it cast that person into darkness? Does our conduct bring light to our family and to those we meet in public? In general, are we a light that helps others find their way? Many of us are not light. Sadly, we are like the smoke left by an oil lamp after its flame has gone out—the smoke that makes us hold our noses. Many of us here are like that. Through our lives, we become the reason not only that we ourselves may fail to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but also that others may not be edified. It is as though our lives block their way, because a person’s life is the proof of his faith. I am a member of society.

How do you conduct yourself? Are your hands clean? You are a housewife—how do you conduct yourself? Where are your children? Where is your husband? Where is your daughter? What has become of your life? Is it genuine? Are you light? If you are not light, and if you are unwilling to devote yourself to serving others so that those around you may receive light and warmth—as the hearts of those traveling to Emmaus were warmed while Christ walked with them—then that candle has no place there. It may help meet the Church’s practical needs, since the Church earns a couple of drachmas from it and can pay for electricity, other expenses, the sexton, and so forth. Yes, it may do that. But for you and me, when we offer it before Christ, who knows what we truly are—when I am unclean and my life is not light—that candle stands as a rebuke. But how could we want to hear such things? We do not want to learn them. We have never come here intending to learn these things.

We offer a votive gift—a necklace, an icon, a chandelier, or something else—thinking that by doing so we have covered our sins and atoned for ourselves. And then, the day after tomorrow, our mother the Church will send us forth with the words I mentioned the other day: “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” Yet often that way is not blessed at all. So please reflect on these things, and care for the Church with the fear of God. Labor also for others who live in ignorance and do not know. Do not keep the light to yourselves; do not keep your knowledge to yourselves. Tithe your knowledge, tithe your money, and tithe your strength. This is necessary. If you succeed in guiding even one soul away from corruption and leading that soul to a spiritual father or into the Church, you have gained a great treasure.

The greatest deposit, the most beautiful and secure investment, is the investment made in a soul. We imagine that wise people are those who manage to build apartments, save money, buy securities, and protect the money earned by their sweat against inflation. No, that is mistaken. Solomon the Wise disagrees: “He who saves souls is wise”—first his own soul, and then another’s. That is the truly wise person. Earthly wealth is not wisdom, because the earth and everything in it will be burned up. This filthy old world will be shaken, pass away, and vanish. Read the Epistle of Peter and see what awaits the earth: “We look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” Read John the Evangelist in his Apocalypse, chapter 21, verse 1.

“I saw a new heaven and a new earth, and the sea was no more.” All the things called technological civilization will pass away and disappear; they have no eternal purpose. Souls are what will remain. Therefore, the person who is enrolled as a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven and whose name is in the Book of Life is on the right path. As Scripture says, “And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.” Our devout parents had us baptized as infants and enrolled us in the Book of Life. But when we grew a little older, we began to deny Christ and to align ourselves once again with Satan and with Barabbas, and so we erased our own names from the Book of Life. If, then, in spite of Satan, the flesh, the world, fashion, our ego, and all the rest, we manage to keep our names written in the Book of Life and also help someone else to come with us...

This is a person’s mission for as long as he lives in this world. No one should remain in bed when the Church bell rings. And the Church’s worship does not begin in the morning; it begins the evening before. I have not seen people stay up late before that demonic box called television and yet come to Church even for half an hour. They do not pray Compline in their homes. They keep vigil in Satan’s ravines—in gambling, corruption, and every other snare—but they do not keep vigil beside their mother, the Church. And unless our mother the Church expends and refines a person through her life, that person is not fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. May Christ be with you, and through the intercessions of His Most Holy Mother, in whose honor this church is dedicated, may He add days to our lives.

And may we be willing to make good use of God’s patient endurance, so that whatever we have neglected until today, we may now attend to and put into practice. Then, whenever He wills us to depart from here, we may go to the place of our permanent dwelling. Amen. Father Basil, permit me to add a few words. Everything you have said has its place in man—not merely in the natural man, but in the man of God—because it is proof that the Lord still loves us and therefore illumines His people through His own servants. I am obliged to carry out the work that God has entrusted to me.

Εκείνο ζωώνει τα παιδιά τα οποία τα δαγκώνει το φίδι, ο σατανάς δηλαδή, ο όφις ο αρχαίος, και μόνο το αίμα του Χριστού είναι εκείνο που μας αναζωογονεί, που μας ποτίζει και ακόμη που μας κάνει, τι ξέρετε, βασιλόπουλα. Διότι εάν δεν πάρουμε το αίμα του Βασιλέως Χριστού μέσα μας, πώς θα γίνουμε βασιλόπουλα για να κληρονομήσουμε τη Βασιλεία Σας;

Αλήθεια, αυτό που λέγω, δεν ξέρω αν το προσέχετε κι εσείς, για μια φορά, διότι δυστυχώς μας διαφεύγουν αυτά τα βασικά πράγματα. Τολμάμε να τον πούμε Πατέρα. Ακούσατε ποτέ, πριν ειπωθεί το «Πάτερ ημών», τι λέει; «Τολμώμεν ἐπικαλεῖσθαι σὲ τὸν ἐπουράνιον Θεὸν Πατέρα καὶ λέγειν». Που τολμάμε να σε πούμε Πατέρα. Πατέρα. Μα είναι κακό να λέω τον Θεό Πατέρα; Μα τον έχεις Πατέρα τον Θεό; Μπορείς να λες ότι έχεις πατέρα τον βασιλιά, εφόσον δεν είσαι πριγκιπόπουλο; Πώς μπορεί να έχεις Πατέρα τον Θεό; Και αν έχεις Πατέρα τον Θεό, του μοιάζεις καθόλου; Σε τι του μοιάζεις; Στη μακροθυμία, στην καθαρότητα, στην αγάπη, στην ανεκτικότητα, στην αποχαιριά; Σε τι του μοιάζεις του Θεού;
