Summary
Christ’s command in Matthew 23:23 requires believers to practice religious duties and moral virtues together, without using another person’s failures to excuse their own omissions. Memorial services and the Church’s prayers remain meaningful because the condition of the departed may still receive mercy and spiritual benefit until the Second Coming. Personal readiness for Communion must still be discerned through confession and obedience to one’s spiritual father, who knows the communicant’s actual spiritual condition.

This evening, with God’s help, our subject will in some way continue the previous talks. You will remember that these talks deal with various questions asked by some of our brothers and sisters. For certain questions that are considered rather serious, we prefer to devote an entire talk to them, so that more people may be benefited—both those listening now and those who will hear it later. Next in the order in which I have arranged them comes this question: “Please explain to us the words, ‘These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.’”
These are the words of Christ. The questioner does not say where the passage was found, but it is in the twenty-third chapter of Matthew, where Christ pronounces the eight woes. He says, “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” In other words, you must do these things and not neglect the others. You must do both. We often do one without doing the other. For example, what do people say? “What good is it? You fast, but you eat three bowls of bean soup. I do not do that. I may eat a little butter or a little meat.”
“As for me and my stomach, I am already fasting even from what I normally eat.” How does that make sense? The person who observes the fast should not eat so much, and you, when it is a fasting day, should also fast. Another person says, for example, “I may not go to Church, but I do not harm anyone. I know others who go to Church, yet they do this and that; they break up marriages, take people to court, and so on.” No. You must both go to Church and refrain from doing those things. You must go to Church and curb your tongue. You must go to Church and not break up a married couple.
You must go to Church, and then there will be no accusers of the clergy. You must do this and refrain from saying that. “These you ought to have done”: you must do these things and the others as well. We sometimes make comparisons and balance one fault against another. Someone says, “I am better than the person who goes to Church.” Christ does not approve of the person who goes to Church but is not good, nor does He approve of you because you are good but do not go to Church. You must be good and go to Church. You must be good and refrain from evil. You must do both, not merely one. To avoid doing one thing, we substitute another. But Christ commands both: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” You must not neglect these either. If we search within ourselves, we will discover many such comparisons and compromises. The Lord comes and tells us, “You must do both.”
If we examine ourselves, then, we will discover where we have gone wrong, and we will stop and change. Someone says, “I do not even step on an ant.” That is good. Should you step on it? You speak as though you had the right to crush it and deserve a reward because you do not. Yet you have not been to confession, and you cannot bear to see the other person
at all.
Both things are therefore needed: the negative and the positive. One alone is not enough. We cannot say, “I do not do this, but I do something else that the other person does not. He only pretends to be a Christian, but he is not.” You must truly be one. You must not merely act like a Christian; you must be one. Both are necessary, the one and the other. You must do it and prove it by your life. What you show outwardly must also be true in reality. This is what the passage reminds us: “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” To excuse ourselves from doing something, we point to others who fail to do it. But we must do both. Someone says, “Why should I go to Church? Should I go there just to see who has what and what someone is wearing today?” No. You must go to Church and not chatter. You must go to Church and not mock this person or that. You must go to Church and not pry into other people’s affairs. You must do both. “These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.” We say, “I do not do that. I make the sign of the Cross at home. I do not go to Church to ridicule people.” No. You must go, and you must not ridicule anyone. You must do both. This is the emphasis Christ wishes to give through these words.
Next, I have another question before me: “Am I right to ask God to guide my son to become His minister and a good worker in His vineyard? My son is a good Christian, but he does not want to become a priest. Am I right to pray in this way or not?” We Christians have a habit of giving orders to God. Here God is being ordered: “You will make my son a priest.” Do you understand?
“You will make him a lawyer; You will have him marry this woman; he will take that journey; he will succeed.” For the most part, these are our prayers. Some people do not pray at all. Others sometimes say the prayers given by the Church, but when those are finished, they add their own. They insert their own requests, as though the prayers of the Church did not already contain every human need and concern. They contain them all. If a person would simply and thoughtfully follow the Church’s service appointed for every hour and every circumstance, there would be no need for all these additional prayers from outside.
For the most part, in our prayers we tell God what to do and what He must do for us. We want Him to give us this particular thing. In this specific case, we might answer as follows: Yes, you see something in your son and have the ambition that he could serve as a clergyman at the altar. But God sees this too. He also has eyes and sees. Does your vision agree with God’s vision? Does your desire agree with God’s desire? Are they the same? “But is what I ask not good?” Yes, it is good and can be fulfilled; someone must undertake this ministry.
But does this child have the necessary gifts? It is good to desire that he become a worker in the vineyard. Indeed, it is also a commandment: “Pray to the Lord of the vineyard that He raise up workers.” That is good. But to nominate the particular worker yourself does not seem quite so good. Our task is not to make him a clergyman by God’s power and place him at the altar ourselves. God must choose him; God must call him. Your task, in the hope that your prayer is right and that God may consent to it, is to guard your son.
Guard him so that he will not slaughter even a young chicken, and may become one who offers sacrifice to God with clean hands. That is the point: preserve your child blameless, clean from sin and, in general, from bloodshed. Whether he then becomes a clergyman is the Master’s concern; it is Christ’s concern. The prophet says somewhere, “But why do you declare My statutes?” Who appointed you? Who called you? You are not going to work in your father’s business or in your father’s factory. Will you stand there and ask God to send down divine grace in return?
He will surely ask you, “Who appointed you to assume this role?” That is why He rejects such presumption. You could always pray for the salvation of your child’s soul, even if he becomes a shoeshine boy in Omonia Square. Then you are a blessed person and are acting rightly. God will see your humility: that you offer your child to Him and would be glad for him to receive this honor if God finds him capable, places him in the right circumstances, wishes to call him, and appoints him. God may make him not merely a priest but an Apostle—or anything else He wills. Yet you and I have no right to put him forward ourselves.
Do we have the right to nominate him? We may offer him to God, yes. But what happens after that belongs to God alone. Two kinds of calling are needed for such work. This is not merely a profession or a trade; it is a sacred ministry. There must be both a calling from God and a personal inclination toward it. He must have the inclination for that path. But you tell me that he does not have it and does not want it. He may become something else. He may excel in the world. He may become an honest and highly skilled professional, an honorable inventor, a great scientist, an ordinary father and family man, or a manual laborer. I do not know what he will become. What matters is not what he becomes. Christ was a carpenter, and Paul made tents. Do not listen to what the world says or to what the evil one puts into our heads. No, what matters is
that his soul be saved. So let the parent say, “My God, I ask You to guard his soul. You did not give him to me so that I could turn him into a professional. You gave him to me so that I might protect him and return him to You. You gave him to me as an angel, and my task is to return him to You pure.” My prayer, then, should be that he becomes a person whose soul will be saved and who will not cause God’s name to be blasphemed—whether he enters the Church’s ministry, remains in society, or leaves for the mountains, wherever he may go. This is what I will ask of You. If you believe this answer is right—though I certainly do not claim to have exhausted the subject—then change your prayer. Stop prescribing methods to God, and entrust both your child and yourself to Him.
If God wants to make him something else, will you agree? You may leave here saying, “As you told us, I will not dictate to God. I will not dictate to Him.” But let me ask you something. If God called your child and he said to you, his mother or father, “I am leaving to become a monk,” what would you do? You would go all the way to the Archbishop and even to the public prosecutor to bring him back. For what you really mean is, “I do not want You to send him away as a monk. No, I want him to be a priest.” Have you ordered God about or not? Is there still an unspoken condition in your heart, one that God knows about, or is there not? God may tell you, “No. If I send him to be a priest, I see the possibility that tomorrow greed or some other passion may seize him and destroy him. I will send him to the Higher War College and let him rise through its ranks.” Will you give him to God or not? Your whole performance of prayer comes with conditions.
If you surrender your child to God, perhaps I do not surrender mine. If I do, the person next to me may not. Perhaps one percent truly surrender their children, while ninety-nine percent do not. Where, then, is the prayer? We must not order God around, telling Him what to do for us and whom to appoint for us. Yet that is where most of our prayers are directed. A practical prayer in this case would be: “My God, You know. You entrusted this child to me as a responsibility, and I want to return him to You. Illumine me so that I may know how to conduct myself toward him, and illumine him as well, I beg You, so that his soul may not be lost. Lead him wherever You know he can flourish.”
How many people ambitiously declare, “I will make something of my child; I will not let him become a laborer.” Then they pressure him, saying, “You must become this, this, and this.” Does he have the ability for it or not? And if he does not have the ability, how will he become it? That is why we have failed scientists. They were not suited to that work; they were meant for something else.
It is the confused meddling of the mother, the father, the uncle, the politician, the godfather, and so on. They place people in positions where they do not belong. A person is not made by his job or profession. What good is it to have the finest profession if I am not even truly human? It is the person who gives worth to the profession. I gave you the examples of the God-Man and, after Him, Paul. They practiced two trades that today many people would consider beneath discussion. “What does the prospective bridegroom do?” “He is a carpenter.” “A carpenter?” They would reject him at once. “He makes tents?” Would that be a problem? Do you understand? If he is a thief, that seems not to matter. If he has some impressive position—even if he is a thief—the only question asked is, “Are you a gentleman?” Do you not hear people say that? They put “Mr.” before his name. He may be called a gentleman, yet in reality he is a slave to his passions. That is roughly how this matter stands.
Below that, here before me, is another question: “When a relative has died and we want to receive Holy Communion at the forty-day memorial, are we doing good for the departed person or for our own soul?”
As you can understand, the question answers itself. It is not a Christian question at all. A Christian receives Holy Communion every day. Are you going to tell me, “I want to receive Holy Communion at the forty-day memorial”? Still, let us suppose that I want to receive Holy Communion at this relative’s forty-day memorial. I receive at other times too, but I also want to receive at his forty-day memorial. What holds the central place in the Church? The so-called Holy Altar. And what does it offer? It offers the Bread of Life. To whom? To those who draw near. And what do those who draw near do? They eat from the Bread of Life. So, when I sit down at the table, you set a plate before me, and I eat, will you be filled, or will the departed person be filled? It is you yourself who will receive Holy Communion.
Can such a question even be asked? It can be asked of non-Christian people who do not receive Holy Communion. In their case it makes sense: “You do not normally receive Holy Communion. But today, when you have come here to attend the memorial service for someone dear to you, do you not think that you ought to receive today?” For where is that soul? Who holds it? “He who, as the immortal King, has authority over both the dead and the living.” Christ holds it. And what is Holy Communion? It is divine communion. If you, who have been invited, are not in communion with Christ because your sins have separated you from Him, how can you possibly move Him to mercy on behalf of the person for whom you have come to pray? Do you understand?
You put on black because afterward you will drink cognac and coffee and say, “May you live to remember him.” These falsehoods have nothing to do with God. It is a mockery from beginning to end. What good can that do? It accomplishes nothing. Woe to the departed who have died without leaving Christians behind them. Woe to them when fifty, a hundred, or two hundred people gather, put on black clothes and black ties, and not one of them is able to move Christ to mercy on behalf of that person. The departed person’s condition before God is one matter, and your own condition is another. You should receive Holy Communion on the day you are present in the Church, because you hear the invitation, “With fear of God...” —and that is why you should come forward to receive Holy Communion. Christ sacrificed Himself indirectly for the departed and directly for you.
The departed will partake in his own way, if you have brought the prosphoron and a particle has been taken out for him, which will afterward be placed in the Blood of the Lamb. You, meanwhile, will receive Holy Communion directly. Through Jesus, then, you are united with the departed. But if you simply put on black and go there just as you were at the marketplace—or wherever you have been all week—and people embrace you and ask what he was like, and you have come merely because he was your relative and you do not want people to take offense, then you neither benefit him nor are you yourself benefited. Our purpose in going is to receive Holy Communion; we have no other purpose. And by receiving Holy Communion, by entering into communion with Christ, we gain a certain boldness to say to Him, “Judge with mercy this dear soul who departed from this life a sinner, whether in word, deed, or thought.”
Thus the departed is benefited, and we too are benefited. He will be benefited through the prosphoron; and if we receive Holy Communion and entreat Christ, we have boldness before Him and can also help the departed. That, more or less, is the meaning of this. Next comes another question concerning the departed. Another soul asks: “Since a person’s lot is judged immediately after death, what meaning do the memorial services and the prayers of the Church have?”
I do not know whether you have ever followed certain court cases. A man has been convicted, they say, but he appeals and is released. He is convicted by the court of appeal, but then he appeals to the Supreme Court. Although he has been sentenced to ten years, he may remain free for another two, three, four, or five years. During that time he may succeed not only in avoiding the ten-year sentence, but even in being acquitted in the end. At the first trial he was sentenced to ten years; he appealed, and it became seven; he went to the Supreme Court, and it became five. Then, perhaps, he makes another application to the Council of State—I do not know—and may even escape the sentence.
He keeps fighting, does he not? Does not a convicted man continue to fight his case here on earth? Something similar applies there. He has been judged—not by a human judgment, but by divine judgment. God has judged him and found that he failed. Yet Christ, in His love for mankind, allows the Church and the people left behind who love him to continue struggling on his behalf.
Will he live in a somewhat lighter condition? That is the point. Prisoners too—the condemned, those serving life sentences, and so forth—can pass their imprisonment somewhat more comfortably when they are helped by people outside. So Christ our God places one on the left and another on the right, according to each one’s faith and deeds. Yet the case remains open. Until the consummation of the ages, through the Church the condition both of the saved and of the condemned may always be changed for the better. The saved may be sanctified still more, while the condemned may have his condition improved—moving from the outer fire to another fire, from the place where “their worm does not die” to another place.
One star differs from another, as it says of our homeland above: “There is one glory of the sun, another of the moon, and another of the stars.” So there too there are degrees. In fact, the other day I was speaking with a woman whose husband had departed this life in a very bad spiritual condition. After forty Divine Liturgies had been offered, his wife saw him in an utterly black, swampy place; but he had risen partly out of it and half his body was now outside. In this way she was shown that he had been raised a little and helped through this indirect receiving of Holy Communion. She continued her struggle, and forty days later she saw him again, now entirely out of that mire. My dear ones, Christ seeks occasions to help us. He seeks occasions.
This is what I said earlier: blessed are those who leave Christians behind them; blessed are those whose final days will be spent among Christians. But woe to those who have no Christians around them, who regard the priest as a misfortune and Holy Confession and Holy Communion as bad omens. Woe to those whom people bundle up and hastily send off to Hell. Where can you find them afterward, and how can you bring them back? So, does the matter truly stand this way? Do memorials have meaning? The Church has left nothing unused, and memorial services and such things go back even to the Old Testament. If you open the Book of Maccabees, you will find references to memorials. They are also found in the first Divine Liturgy, that of Saint James the Brother of the Lord. In it there are...
particles offered for those who have fallen asleep. Offerings for those who have fallen asleep have existed since that time. And you should know that only the Orthodox Church offers this consolation for the departed. No other so-called church does. In Papism, once you die, you burn; there is no help at all. No sacrifice is offered afterward. There is no offering—there is nothing. And never mind the others, the heresies, Protestantism, and so forth, who believe in God in their own way. This is why the case is not closed and why these things have meaning. Let us not be deceived on this point. As I have told you—and I have had occasion to speak about this before—I have given three talks: two about death and one about memorial services.
Memorial services continue to care for those who have fallen asleep until the Second Coming. Only at the Second Coming is each person’s case closed. Until then, the case remains open, and Christ has not yet come to judge. The Church can still improve the condition of many. I will tell you something bold—very bold. Saint Gregory the Dialogist prayed for a friend of his who had been condemned, and after some time our Lord personally sent him an angel who said, “Cease praying for him.” Every day, like the first Christians, he was putting into practice the words, “Our daily bread.”
“Give us this day.” I would like to ask the following.
What do you want to ask this person? Do you want to ask him so that you can learn how he manages to do this, or so that you can justify yourself and say, “This is impossible”? Whether or not such a person exists, there ought to be one. Christ said nothing that cannot be put into practice. And even today there are people who receive Holy Communion—not every day, because often the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated daily.
First of all, throughout Great Lent there are days—Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday—when no Divine Liturgy is celebrated. There are also other days of the year when no Divine Liturgy is celebrated. So that is not the issue. The question could instead be put this way: who is able to receive Holy Communion every day? Yes, there are people who receive Holy Communion every day. Suppose someone works and, because of his employment, can attend the Church every Sunday. He receives Holy Communion every Sunday. In that sense he receives daily, because if he could attend the Church on the other days, he would receive then too—except on those days when, if he is married, he cannot come forward.
There are days when he cannot come forward. You may have sinned and therefore be unable to come forward. There are also other circumstances that often keep a person from receiving. You may sin even while you are in the Church. Still, if you are asking whether daily Communion can be put into practice, yes, it can. Of course, for many people other questions will then arise: “When does such a person fast?” That opens another subject: whether there is a special fast before receiving Holy Communion. We will find that there is no such special fast before Holy Communion. When it is a fast day, you fast and receive Holy Communion; when it is not a fast day, you receive without fasting.
Then you will be able to put into practice what now seems difficult and has led you to ask this question. Many people ask me about this. At the sermon I gave before coming here, someone asked me, “May I eat on Saturday if I am going to receive Holy Communion on Monday?” I said, “Will you go to the Church on Saturday?” “I may go.” “Will you go to the Church on Sunday?” “Yes,” he said, “I will go on Sunday.” Then why receive Holy Communion only on Monday? Why receive on Monday and not on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as well? What is stopping you? The matter of food? Is there any ecclesiastical law that forbids it? Search every book in the world, and you will find no such law.
I am not telling you to receive Holy Communion; that is a matter for your spiritual father. You must ask him. I am not a confessor. I do not wear a confessor’s stole, and I do not possess the authority to bind and loose. I am simply saying that, if I were in your place and there were no other sin involved, I would receive Holy Communion on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. On Sunday I would eat what I normally eat; and if I did not want to eat, I would not. But I would not fast merely in order to receive Holy Communion on Monday and thus make myself worthy. No. I would eat on Sunday and receive Holy Communion on Monday too. What Christ said can be put into practice. He made no mistake; we are the ones who have confused matters. Open the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles and see how the first members of the early Church lived. Thank you. They were daily...
“in the breaking of bread, partaking with simplicity of heart.” When did they fast? No appointed fast had yet been established. The fasts were instituted later—the fasts on Wednesday and Friday, and so forth. Scripture tells you that they received Holy Communion every day. “But my heart will not let me eat and then receive Holy Communion.” Can you tell me what Christ and His disciples had on their table on Great and Holy Thursday? What do you think they had? Stuffed squash blossoms or boiled greens? What do you imagine was served? When was the Mystical Supper given? When was Holy Communion instituted? If you have ever read the Gospel, it says, “After supper, He took the cup, blessed it,” and spoke. After supper. Thank you.
These two tables are closely joined, my dear ones; let us not confuse them. The material table and the spiritual table do not negate one another. Now, if certain spiritual fathers allow some people to receive Holy Communion continually and do not allow others, that is a particular matter known to them, because many people do not live the life they claim to live, and many do not live as they ought in order to be able, whenever they stand before the Holy Chalice, to say, “Behold, here I am, Lord.” For this reason I cannot criticize those spiritual fathers. Through each person’s confession, they know more than I do while speaking in general terms at this moment. I am speaking generally and saying that a person must reach the point where his spiritual father’s hands are untied.
Then he can say to you, “My child, go and regulate this for yourself,” as the Apostle says: “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” But when your spiritual father hears your confession and it is the same as the previous ones, each one repeating the last—when you have changed nothing and keep doing the same things over and over—how can he permit you to receive Holy Communion frequently? How can he not impose fasting on you when he knows that you do not fast, when he sees that you are avoiding having children, and sees a thousand other things in your life? How can he permit you to receive Holy Communion? Do you understand? I am explaining the general principle, but its particular application belongs to each person’s spiritual father. Now, if some spiritual fathers make certain mistakes because they do not study, or because they regulate people’s lives according to their own ideas, that is another matter. Look further and find someone with greater discernment, someone whom you know understands these matters. You have that right; the soul is yours.
It is yours. You are the one who must surrender it to God; your spiritual father does not have that surrender on your behalf. You change a doctor who is not right for you, who has made a mistake in a diagnosis, or whom you learn has failed somewhere else. You change him, you become cautious, and you guard yourself. You have every right to do so; no one binds you. Yet I cannot condemn a spiritual father completely and say that he is not doing his work unless I could look behind the scenes of the confession. If he permits someone to receive Holy Communion after a single meatless day of fasting, or whatever it may be, perhaps I would not permit that person to receive at all. Do we understand, then? The words, “Give us this day our daily bread,” still stand. We also see that the early Church, and even Basil the Great, upheld this through daily Holy Communion. Basil the Great says, “We receive Holy Communion...”
“...on Wednesday and Friday”—four times during the week. “And if there is another feast,” he says, “we receive Holy Communion on that day as well”: five times, six times, even every day. The question, then, is not how someone will receive Holy Communion, but how he will stop sinning so that he may receive. That is the issue. How will you restrain your tongue, close your eyes, and hold back your hand, your flesh, and your mouth? Everything depends on that. The question is not how you will receive Holy Communion, but how you will stop sinning. From that point, frequent Holy Communion begins. That is roughly how the matter stands. We have given many series of talks on Holy Communion, and there is also a special book entitled The Antidote to Death. The whole subject of Holy Communion is set out there, so that a person may learn how, when, and why to receive. Further down there is another question, which comes to soften and ease the tone a little. The question is this:
Why are miracles not performed today, as Christ performed them in His time, by His present-day representatives?
A representative is someone who represents a person who is absent. The representative fills the place left by the real person’s absence. That is what the Pope claims to be. So we might write to him and ask why this representative does not perform miracles. But the question is not correct, my dear friend. Miracles are performed even today. Go to Tinos and see how many miracles take place there. Go to Saint Nektarios of Aegina and see how many miracles occur. Go to Saint Raphael on Mytilene and see how many miracles occur. Who said that miracles no longer happen? And who is supposed to perform them? Is the priest to perform them? How would a Saint perform them?
Is the priest to perform them? And even if a miracle took place through a priest, would it be the priest who performed it, or Christ through that priest? Read about Anthony the Great and see what he says. Once they brought him a man possessed by a demon. He prayed, made the sign of the Cross over him, and the demon came out. They thanked him, fell at his feet, and continued thanking him. “Come now,” he said. “The miracle was performed through the Cross and through Christ. It was not performed by me. The Cross of Christ, and Christ through His Cross, drove the devil out of this man.” Is the miracle something for him to boast about? Even when miracles take place through the Saints, the Church attributes them to Christ and not to the Saint. I may say, “Saint Nektarios performed a miracle,” or, “Saint Spyridon performed a miracle.” But then why is the glory not given to Saint Spyridon or Saint Nektarios?
What happens instead? The glory is directed through Saint Spyridon to God, and we say: “Glory to Him who has glorified you; glory to Him who has crowned you; glory to Him who works healings for all through you.” I am nothing; I have nothing. The glory, the honor, the worship—everything belongs to Him. So the question is not correctly put, and we should not expect clergy today to perform miracles.
Besides, do the clergy not work miracles? When you bring a priest your unbaptized child, in whose heart Satan has established himself, and the priest baptizes the child, is that not a miracle? Does the demon not come out? It happens on Christ’s behalf, because I can perform no miracle of myself. It is done on Christ’s behalf. Even our Most Holy Theotokos does not perform a miracle by herself; it is done on behalf of the Lord. For many years she interceded for Greece. For at least one hundred and eighty years, the Most Holy Theotokos prayed for the liberation of Greece, and yet Christ did not grant her request. We remained enslaved for another two hundred and fifty years, because He told her: “Mother, the reasons for which this nation, this people, was enslaved have not disappeared. This people has not repented.” And so we remained enslaved until four hundred years had passed. Can the Theotokos, then, perform a miracle by herself? Christ performs the miracle, even when He does so through the Theotokos.
So this poor, sinful little priest performs a Baptism, casts out the demon, and makes the child new—is that not a miracle? Does Christ not perform a miracle through him? When the priest changes the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood, it is Christ and the Holy Spirit who do this through him. Is that not also a miracle worked through the priest? And have you never read what the Lord will say: “Depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness. I do not know you”? They will answer: “You do not know us? We preached! We cast out demons!” Yet He will say, “Depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness. I do not know you.” Is this not so? Therefore, do not be scandalized, and do not demand visible ranks of wonderworkers. Even today, people read an exorcism and cast out demons.
Even today a priest reads a prayer over someone, reads the prayer against the evil eye, and the child opens his eyes. In a village an animal is lying on the ground about to die; the priest reads a prayer over it, and it rises. Is that not a miracle performed through those whom you call His representatives? Who performs the miracle? Does Christ not perform it through the priest? And did Christ not perform miracles through His servants then as well? When Peter said, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth—silver and gold I do not have—rise and walk,” did the man walk in Peter’s name? Did Peter, from his own power, give healing to the forty-year-old paralytic who lay there by the gate? Miracles, then, are still performed today. Go to Malevi and see the thousands of votive offerings. Are these not testimonies of miracles? Who said that miracles do not occur today? The blind refuse to see that miracles still happen. At the blessing of water, the sinful little priest reads the prayers over the water; you take it home, and it does not spoil. Is that not a miracle performed for you through him? Is that not a miracle through the man whom you call God’s representative?
Miracles do exist. They simply do not happen in the way we demand.
Next I find another question: “On Sunday, should we never kneel in the Church under any circumstances?” We have spoken about this issue many times. It has repeatedly come to the forefront because, as you see, it is disputed. We have formed bad habits. Some people—perhaps even some of our spiritual fathers or clergy—do not take the correct position according to the Patristic teaching on this matter and according to what the Canons of the Church and the Synods teach. So here too people do as they please. Someone says, “I experience greater katanyxis, greater compunction, when I kneel. Why should I not kneel? What harm am I doing? And if I do not kneel in the Church, where I come to pray, where will I kneel?” There is truth in these words, and yet they are not correct.
What should you do? Your reward lies in your obedience. You have something to gain if you obey, and obedience here means not kneeling. Because you did not kneel, you will gain spiritually. You gain nothing if you do your own will. But we have not yet cut off our own will. How, then, can we obey? We insist on applying our own reasoning. Did Peter not do the same when Christ told him to sit down so that He could wash his feet? Peter rose to leave. “Impossible!” he said. “You cannot wash my feet. How could such a thing be allowed? What are You saying, Master?” What did Christ tell him? “You have no part with Me.” When Peter heard that Christ was sending him away, he turned and said, “No—not only my feet, but my head and my whole body as well! Am I to leave this place?”
So let Him wash your feet, and leave wisdom to be vindicated by her works. I now ask those who raise this question, those who have asked it before, those who will ask it, and those who argue that a person should kneel and thus do as he pleases: Are there Canons that forbid kneeling in the Church, or are there not? We Orthodox, at least, begin with the words, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers,” and we end with, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” Who are these Fathers whose prayers we invoke at the beginning and at the completion of the Divine Liturgy? Who are they? They are all the Fathers—Basil the Great, Gregory, Athanasius, and all the others. Above all, they are the Fathers who took part in the Spirit-bearing Councils.
No true Council of the Orthodox Church has taken place without the presence of the Holy Spirit, and no such Council has taken place without miracles. Consequently, what the Councils established and what the God-bearing Fathers taught came through the Holy Spirit. How, then, do you dare to set yourself against Canon 20 of the First Ecumenical Council, where 318 Fathers, with Saint Spyridon among their leaders and with four miracles bearing witness, tell you, “No, you must not kneel during the Divine Liturgy from Saturday evening until Sunday evening”? If you have—not the courage, but the audacity—to say, “Down with the Ecumenical Council and down with its twentieth Canon,” then you may follow your own way.
Very well, then. I will make a prostration before you, say, “Bless me,” and leave, if you have the audacity to do such a thing. If you have the audacity to strike out Canon 90 of the Sixth Ecumenical Council, which forbids kneeling on Sunday, then again, have it your way.
You must also strike out Canon 21 of Basil the Great—again, have it your way. And if you are prepared to strike out Canon 15 of Peter of Alexandria, then once again, have it your way.
They have not read these Canons. It is not the end of the world; they simply have not read them. If they had, they would mention them. Whether that other person says it or I say it, at least we hear it. Would it somehow be more blessed if it came from a priest’s mouth? What am I saying? I am citing Canon 20 of the First Ecumenical Council. That settles the matter, whether a priest says it, Panagopoulos says it, George says it, or no one says it. I am not presenting my own opinion. I am telling you what the Canons say—the Fathers whose prayers we invoke when we say, “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers.” That is what I am saying. Why does someone else not say it? Perhaps he has not read it. Or perhaps some newer theory has shaken his conviction on this matter. There have also been prominent men within our Orthodoxy who opposed this teaching about kneeling—men who were considered great. Do you understand? That is why people become uncertain and reduce the matter to human reasoning. Someone says, “How can I possibly...”
“...refrain from kneeling?” But, my dear friend, open the Euchologion. “But the priest kneels,” you say. The Euchologion tells the priest to stand upright, with the deacon also standing upright, their heads bowed, and to offer the prayer, saying: “Send down, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth.” If he dares to alter the Great Euchologion, why do you hold me responsible? We must pray for people to arise in the Church who will apply the Canons, so that the Rudder may be placed within the Church—not human reasoning and opinion, which come from the head, but the Rudder, which concerns the heart and obedience. Then everyone will draw guidance from the Rudder and guide the people by it, and the little ship will sail on a true course. Then we shall have the One who is...
“...the grace of God and of the Holy Spirit.” Yet people speak as though the Fathers had imposed excommunications on those who disobey. In their paternal exhortations, the Fathers say: “My children, do this. This is what we write and teach you.” But we do not do it. They did not impose excommunication or deposition. Let me tell you: if they had, we would see what each person would do. They did not impose excommunication or deposition, as they did upon a priest who does not fast on Wednesday, Friday, and during Great Lent. There is no penalty of deposition here. The Fathers appeal to us; the 318 Holy Fathers appeal to us: “My children, pray in this way. This is what is right.” They imposed no penalty. If they had imposed excommunication, we would see whether everyone could continue doing as he pleased. But even so...
For an excommunication to take effect, someone must formally impose it. The Church says in the Ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles that any Christian who goes to Church and does not receive Holy Communion is to be excommunicated. Are we who do not receive Holy Communion therefore excommunicated? No, we are not. Why? Because no one has excommunicated us. Do you understand? People say, “The Patriarch is a heretic because he did such and such. He is excommunicated.” Who excommunicated him? He may have committed acts deserving excommunication. But since no one excommunicated him—since the other Patriarchates and the rest of the Christian world did not excommunicate him—he has not been deprived of anything. How could he be? Have we not called those who do not have children excommunicated? Have we not said the same of those who do not fast, those who do not receive Holy Communion, and those who do not go to Church
every Sunday? Well, are they excommunicated? No, they are not. Since no sentence of excommunication has been pronounced, they are not excommunicated. A person who did not receive Holy Communion has lost all the spiritual benefit of receiving it, but he is not excommunicated. Do you understand? This is precisely why I say that we must pay attention to these things, and each person should gradually put them into practice. There are other matters here as well, but it seems I do not have time to address them. God willing, when we meet again—if we do meet again—we shall discuss them. If we do not, let someone else who takes my place speak about them. Crosses and various other matters.

Στη συνέχεια έχω μπροστά μου ένα άλλο ερώτημα που λέει το εξής: «Κάνω καλώς που παρακαλώ τον Θεό να κατευθύνει τον υιόν μου να γίνει λειτουργός Του και καλός εργάτης του αμπελώνος Του; Παρόλο που ο υιός μου είναι καλός χριστιανός, αλλά ιερεύς δεν θέλει να γίνει. Κάνω καλώς που προσεύχομαι κατά αυτόν τον τρόπο ή όχι;» Είναι μια συνήθεια ημών των χριστιανών να διατάσσουμε τον Θεό. Εδώ τώρα διατάσσεται ο Θεός: «Θα μου κάνεις τον γιο παπά». Καταλάβατε;
Μη σφάξει ούτε κλωσσόπουλο, να γίνει θύτης του Θεού με καθαρά χέρια. Αυτό είναι το θέμα: να φυλάξεις το παιδί σου άμωμο, καθαρό από την αμαρτία και γενικά από το αίμα. Αν τώρα γίνει κληρικός, είναι δουλειά του Αφέντη, είναι δουλειά του Χριστού. Αναφέρει ο προφήτης και λέγει σε ένα μέρος: «Τί δὲ σὺ ἐκδιηγῇ τὰ δικαιώματά μου;» Ποιος σε έβαλε εσένα, λέει; Ποιος σε κάλεσε; Διότι δεν πας στη δουλειά του πατέρα σου, δεν πας στη φάμπρικα του πατέρα σου. Θα πας και θα παρακαλείς τον Θεό να αντικαταπέμψει τη Θεία Χάρη;
Μπορεί να τεθεί αυτό το ερώτημα; Μπορεί να τεθεί στους ανθρώπους τους μη χριστιανούς, οι οποίοι δεν κοινωνούν. Σε αυτούς στέκεται αυτό. «Καλά, δεν κοινωνείτε. Σήμερα που ήρθατε εδώ να παρασταθείτε στο μνημόσυνο αυτού του προσφιλούς σας προσώπου, δεν το νομίζετε ότι πρέπει να κοινωνήσετε σήμερα;» Διότι πού είναι αυτή η ψυχή; Ποιος την έχει; «Ὁ καὶ νεκρῶν καὶ ζώντων τὴν ἐξουσίαν ἔχων ὡς ἀθάνατος Βασιλεύς». Την έχει ο Χριστός. Η Θεία Κοινωνία τι είναι; Θεία επικοινωνία. Αν, λοιπόν, εσύ ο προσκεκλημένος δεν επικοινωνείς με τον Χριστό, διότι δεν τα έχεις καλά λόγω αμαρτιών σου, πώς είναι δυνατό να Τον επηρεάσεις ευμενώς υπέρ του προσώπου που έρχεσαι να προσευχηθείς; Βοηθάτε;
Διατί δεν γίνονται θαύματα σήμερον, όπως ο Χριστός έκαμε στην εποχή του, από τους σημερινούς αντιπροσώπους του;
Αντιπρόσωπος. Αντιπρόσωπος θα πει ένα πρόσωπο που αντιπροσωπεύει κάποιο απόν πρόσωπο. Την απουσία του πραγματικού προσώπου καλύπτει ο αντιπρόσωπος. Αυτό το λέει ο Πάπας. Και θα μπορούσα να πω, πρέπει να γράψουμε εκεί να μας πει αυτός ο αντιπρόσωπος γιατί δεν κάνει θαύματα. Αλλά δεν είναι σωστό, αγαπητέ μου. Κάνουν θαύματα και σήμερα. Για πήγαινε στην Τήνο να δεις πόσα θαύματα κάνει. Για πήγαινε στον Άγιο Νεκτάριο στην Αίγινα να δεις πόσα θαύματα γίνονται. Για πήγαινε στον Άγιο Ραφαήλ στη Μυτιλήνη να δεις πόσα θαύματα γίνονται. Ποιος είπε ότι δεν γίνονται θαύματα; Ποιος δηλαδή θα τα κάνει; Θα τα κάνει ο ιερεύς; Πώς θα τα κάνει ο Άγιος;
Σήμερα ο ιερεύς διαβάζει γι’ αυτό προσευχή, διαβάζει την αβασκανία και το παιδί ανοίγει τα μάτια του. Το ζώο πάει κάτω να ψοφήσει στο χωριό, το διαβάζει ο ιερεύς και σηκώνεται επάνω. Δεν είναι θαύμα αυτό, διά των αντιπροσώπων του που το λες; Ποιος το κάνει το θαύμα; Δεν το κάνει ο Χριστός δι’ αυτού; Και τότε ο Χριστός δεν το έκανε δι’ αυτού; Όταν ο Πέτρος είπε «ἐν ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου, ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον δεν έχω, σήκω επάνω και περπάτησε», εν ονόματι Πέτρου επερπάτησε; Από τον εαυτό του ο Πέτρος έδωσε στον σαράντα ετών παράλυτο που ήταν εκεί πέρα στην πόρτα; Και σήμερα λοιπόν γίνονται θαύματα. Κι αν πάτε, πηγαίνετε στη Μαλεβή, χιλιάδες αναθήματα. Δεν είναι θαύματα αυτά; Ποιος είπε ότι δεν γίνονται σήμερα θαύματα; Οι τυφλοί δεν θέλουν να δουν ότι γίνονται σήμερα θαύματα. Στον αγιασμό, το νερό που σου διαβάζει και το παίρνεις σπίτι και δεν χαλάει, αυτό δεν είναι θαύμα που στο κάνει ο παπαδάκος ο αμαρτωλός; Δεν είναι θαύμα αυτό, αντιπρόσωπος του Θεού που τον λες;
