Summary

Matthew 15 addresses eating with unwashed hands and teaches that evil arising from the heart defiles a person; it does not abolish fasting. True spiritual understanding is attributed to humility, prayer, the Holy Spirit, and the God-bearing Fathers rather than private interpretation or intellectual pride. Following the Apostle Paul, women are encouraged to cover their heads modestly during church prayer and worship.

Our subject will continue from the previous two talks. Those of you who were with us for those talks will remember that, prompted by certain notes submitted here, we discussed matters that I thought could serve as a broader teaching, so to speak, for the benefit of some people. These are matters whose true meaning has been lost, and many people do not know how things really stand.

As certain people have told me, they truly...

They were edified, I would say, by these talks, especially the last two. The next note before me says: “Regarding fasting, Mr. Panagopoulos, people tell us that what enters a person does no harm, while what comes out does. That is what the Gospel says. What should we answer? They leave us speechless—please tell us.” The truth is that many people know the answer and the interpretation. But those who are caught up in this confusion do not know them. A person must look up where Christ spoke to us about what enters and what comes out. If he searches, he will find this incident in the fifteenth chapter of Matthew. He must read the entire line of reasoning. He must not isolate these phrases about what enters and what comes out. He must take what comes before and after them, so that he may see why Christ said this. Then he will see that Christ did not say it for the purpose for which people use it as an excuse for their gluttony and their refusal to fast. Listen, then, to what the passage says: “Then there came to Jesus”—I am reading Matthew, chapter fifteen, verse one—

“scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem, saying, ‘Why do Your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.’” They left Jerusalem and traveled far to the place where Christ was. They found Him and observed that His disciples did not wash their hands before eating and therefore, in a certain sense, transgressed the command of the elders. This command was not in the Law; they themselves had devised it. “But He answered and said to them, ‘Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?’” He tells them that many times they transgress the commandment of God

through a tradition that they themselves devised. “For God,” for example, “commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die.’” This was the command that young people who did not honor their parents were to be stoned. But you, He says, have now altered this command in your own way.

This is what you do: “Whoever says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift offered to God,’ need not honor his father or mother.” A person may speak against his father and even declare that his father deserves a beating; yet if he dedicates something to the Temple, the matter is considered settled. But you devised this rule yourselves: that through a gift, through an offering dedicated to the Temple, you can escape the penalty of stoning and then say or do whatever you please to your parents. This, He says, is what you do. And Christ says: “Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect.”

“Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘This people draws near to Me with their mouth and honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” Then, “having called the multitude to Himself”—He now called the people—“He said to them, ‘Hear and understand.’” Do not listen to what these men say. Come near, and I will tell you how matters truly stand. I will expose and unmask those who set out from Jerusalem to catch Me as a transgressor. You, therefore, hear and understand: “It is not what enters the mouth that defiles a man.”

Is it, He asks, what enters the mouth that defiles a person? What is the discussion about? What is the subject? Is it fasting, or is it unwashed hands? The subject is not fasting. It is whether someone may eat without washing his hands. That is where the discussion begins. In other words, may he eat with dirty hands? Is that permitted, or is it a transgression? Here, then, Christ is answering the question about unwashed hands. He is not speaking about fasting, and you will see this even more clearly below. “It is not what enters the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a man.” That is, wicked things—things such as yours.

These are what reveal a person to be defiled and unclean. Then His disciples came to Him and said, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” You spoke to them plainly, and the Pharisees were offended because they heard You call them wicked. Christ continues: “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.” This is a planting of Satan, not a planting of God, and that is why they do not understand Me. “Let them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a pit.” Then Peter answered Him: “Explain this parable to us.”

Explain these things to us, so that we may understand what You have said up to this point. What does this parable mean? “But Jesus said, ‘Are you also still without understanding?’” Even you, He says, still do not understand? Do you not grasp what I am trying to tell you? “Do you not yet understand”—pay attention, He says it again and repeats it—“that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated?” He is not speaking about fasting here. He is still speaking about the dirt that enters a person’s mouth through unwashed hands. I say it again: “Whatever enters the mouth,” whether clean or unclean, “goes into the stomach”

—into a person’s belly—and afterward, He says, it is eliminated. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.” These are the things that defile a person. “What things come from the heart, Lord?” someone might ask. The answer is: “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, and blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

There you have it!

Was He speaking about fasting? No. But we are completely in the dark because we have never gone and read the passage for ourselves, and then anyone can come along with his clever claim. We have a duty to enlighten such people with love and kindness—not through quarrels and not with raised voices. Sit down, my dear friend. Sit down, my brother. Where did you find this? Who told you such a thing? You have understood it incorrectly. What Christ said about what enters and what comes out was not said for that purpose. They were discussing another subject, and He said it about another situation. Yet you have taken it and applied it somewhere it does not belong, gaining no benefit from it and bringing ruin both upon yourself and upon others. What people are telling us has nothing at all to do with this passage.

Of course, these subjects can never be exhausted. But it is enough for a person to understand how matters stand and then calmly investigate the question for himself and read about it, so that he may settle it once and for all and pass the truth on to others. For if we can do good by enlightening someone, yet we do not equip ourselves to help him, that is a sin on our part.

Another note asks: “What does the condemned practice of simony mean?” This is not difficult to answer. It is found in the Acts of the Apostles, and there one can discover the cause and origin of simony. One must look at the eighth chapter of Acts, beginning with verse nine. There one finds Simon Magus, who offered money to the Apostles so that he too might receive the Holy Spirit. He saw that through the laying on of the Apostles’ hands people received the grace of the Holy Spirit and were born anew: those who had been baptized in water were also baptized in the Spirit. And when he saw this,

his thinking became corrupt, for he wanted to exploit this grace. Peter said to Simon, “May your money perish with you.” From that point onward, this sinful trafficking in the transmission of grace came to be called simony. Sometimes a person may bribe a weak Archbishop and obtain an ordination from him by underhanded means, paying him to make that person a priest or a deacon. This is called simony. It may be that one clergyman says to another, “You will give me this much, and I will ordain you,” or that a man offers money to pressure and entice him: “I will give you this much if you ordain me.” Such a transaction is called simony, taking its name from Simon Magus, who

asked to pay the Apostles. He had a great deal of money because he earned much from practicing magic, and he wished to purchase the power to receive the Holy Spirit. That, in the first instance, is where the term comes from. The same person who wrote the note then asks: “May we read the Gospels in translation when we pray?” If a Gospel passage occurs within a service of prayer—for example, if we accept that there is a Gospel reading in the Paraklesis—the priest will proclaim it. When you read the Paraklesis, whatever belongs to the priest in the Paraklesis is to be read by the priest. If no priest is present, we pass over those parts and continue with the portions appointed to us.

We are not going to make ourselves priests or Archbishops. If a priest is present and he is Orthodox, he will always use the original text. He will not use a paraphrase or the version of the Bible Society. Does it not strike you that all the heretics—whether they are called Protestants or Jehovah’s Witnesses—use the Bible Society’s paraphrase rather than the original text? Why? Because it serves their purposes. Therefore, if we can, we should read the Gospel in the original text and use aids to interpret it. These modern-language renderings are not always made for a good purpose. They have not always translated the text correctly, and their teachings rest upon such renderings. A person can find many passages in paraphrased versions that have been interpreted wrongly. Of course, even to this day many people argue fiercely and shout that the Gospel must be interpreted and translated into modern language.

The Holy Spirit has never permitted the Gospel to be translated into modern Greek, nor should the Gospel be so translated. If our language is being corrupted today, it is so that we will no longer understand the Gospel. They have no other purpose. Their purpose is this: that we should not understand the texts of the Church or the Gospel. That is their aim. Otherwise, if they were concerned about our progress,

they would not bring the language down to our level, but would raise us up to the level of the language. Yet this is what has happened. I would like you to know that from the earliest years this question troubled Christians who lacked understanding. They asked about it, and once the question was even put to Athanasius the Great: Why should Holy Scripture not be written in a language that everyone can understand? People had difficulties with language even then. Athanasius the Great answered in this way: “If Holy Scripture is translated into the everyday language of the people, it will become like the newspapers Ta Nea, Vradyni, or Eleftherotypia. You will read it and then throw it away to wrap sardines in it.” The Gospel must remain in its own language, written through the Holy Spirit in a holy language, the Greek language, because it is the only language capable of conveying the meanings of Holy Scripture. No other language can convey them. Above all, no other language can adequately render Patristic literature. I know this from personal experience. I was once asked to have a small book I had written, Truly Christ Is Risen, translated into English. Five highly educated people were enlisted,

professors, two of whom had even studied English specifically in England, in London. But when they came to the patristic passages, they were unable to convey the meaning expressed in our own language. Another book I wrote—my first, in 1957—was The Antidote to Death. It has already been in Boston for fifteen years, where learned people have been working on it. They have still not managed to translate it because of the patristic texts. They cannot convey the meaning that our Fathers express in the Greek language, and so it remains untranslated. Do not find this strange. In a single phrase Christ says, “I did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it.” How will you interpret that?

Will you choose only one meaning? Did He come to fulfill it, or to complete it? How? The word bears both meanings: to fulfill and to complete. “It was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you,” if your eye looks with an evil desire, “you have already committed adultery.” “It was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder.’ But I say to you,” do not even become angry. If you become angry, you may go on to commit murder. How will you interpret these things? They should not be replaced by a paraphrase. The text must remain as it is, while the person rises up to its level with the help and support of patristic literature, so that the Holy Spirit may interpret what the Holy Spirit wrote through the Holy Fathers. The Holy Spirit wrote, and the Holy Spirit interpreted. That is why the interpreters are called the God-bearing Fathers. There was a brother from Athens—perhaps he is even among us tonight, and I ask his forgiveness for telling this story. He was Orthodox, then became a Jehovah’s Witness, and afterward a Protestant.

They accept nothing outside their own wisdom, believing that in interpreting Scripture they possess the Holy Spirit. They all claim to have the Holy Spirit and to be inspired by the Holy Spirit. Yet there ought to be only one confession. Since 1519, Protestantism has produced a new variation almost every year. In America alone, some four hundred Protestant variations are already in circulation. Who, then, finally possesses the truth, if all of them have the Holy Spirit and are illumined by the Holy Spirit? You understand. This man absolutely refused to consult anyone. Through Scripture, he believed, he had become illumined by God. Yet there was one verse he could not interpret. So he made a vow that, every day after returning from work, he would spend two hours kneeling in his room—in the attic where he lived at the time, for he was still unmarried—praying to Christ and begging Him to

illumine him and give him the interpretation. For eighty-three days, my dear friends, he prayed persistently without ceasing. You know, Satan does not trouble heretics. He leaves them there to do all these things. But if we begin to say even one “Lord have mercy,” he will immediately send flies into our eyes. He does not trouble them at all, because he sees them as lambs in his possession. Let them become Orthodox, and then you will see what happens. On the eighty-eighth day—it was a Monday—as the man knelt there, a tall, fair-haired figure appeared and struck him on the back. “What are you doing there?” The man turned around calmly. “I am praying,” he said. “What are you praying, and to whom?” “I am praying to our Lord Jesus Christ.” “Why? What are you asking Him for?” “I am asking Him for the interpretation of a verse. That interpretation does not exist on earth, so I am asking for it from Heaven.”

The figure looked at him. “I ask you,” he said, “has John Chrysostom interpreted this verse or not?” “His interpretation exists on earth, you proud man, so do not expect it from Heaven.” And then the fallen angel vanished. From that time onward, the man returned to the Orthodox faith, together with his wife and children. Why seek things from Heaven when they already exist on earth? But pride prevents people from seeing this, and these are the results. It is therefore good to read the Gospel in the original text. “But I do not understand it.” Are you reading it so that you may understand it, or so that He may understand you? Know that when we read it, He understands.

I may not understand it, but He to whom and for whom I speak does. It is good for a person to eat and digest his food, but even when he cannot fully digest it, he must still eat. Many times we eat without later remembering what we ate, and yet the food nourishes us. “Grandfather, what did you eat last night?” “My child, do you expect me to remember what I ate last night?” We often use this as an argument: “I cannot even remember what I ate yesterday, and now you ask me this.” Yes, but it nourished you. You do not remember that, yet it did. It is exactly the same here. Can you say to the Lord, “Lord, do not correct me”? Can you refuse to say, “Lord, have mercy on me,” and instead say, “Lord, do not have mercy on me”? Try it, and you will see what God is and to what He responds. He does not respond to knowledge; He responds to humility. That is why all the Saints became holy through these prayers. If you go to secondhand bookshops, you will find worn prayer books and service books, half worn away,

with wax all over the pages where the monk’s hand had held them: the Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, the Midnight Office, the hymns to the Holy Trinity, the Hours, the Paraklesis to Christ, and the Akathist Hymn. And still the answer may not come—not at the first hour, or the second, or the third, or the ninth. Yet this is spiritually healthy. Nor did they say to Heaven the silly things we say: how little Katitsa is doing, how Giannakis is doing, that the children may pass their exams so they will not have to stay indoors studying all summer but can go out and get some fresh air. These are our own trivialities. I am not speaking against knowledge, but that is not where the heart of the matter lies. The matter is spiritual. A person should therefore read.

A translation can help with an occasional word, but one should not abandon the sweetness—the savor, as we might say—that the Holy Spirit has given Holy Scripture in its original text. Let me tell you about a very elderly woman who was completely illiterate, yet she would arrive at the Church before the priest. “Why do you go to Church so early?” “Ah, to hear the sacred words.” “But you understand nothing of the feast.” “What words?” She could not even read. Nevertheless, she went to Church to hear Matins (Orthros), the Six Psalms—which are difficult—and the troparia. Why? Because the Holy Spirit is present in the Church and, in His own way, nourishes human souls through things that people cannot understand merely by learning or by reasoning with their heads. The same person then continues in this written note.

Is making the sign of the Cross while wearing gloves an act of irreverence? Suppose you are about to greet someone—a young lady, a gentleman, or another lady. You quickly remove your glove to shake hands, do you not? Making the sign of the Cross is also a point of contact with your Creator and Redeemer. Now, if there is some particular need, do not remove it. If it is bitterly cold, do not remove it. But if you can manage to take it off, you do no wrong. You humbly show that you know to whom you are addressing yourself, and this brings a blessing. It is not a question of good manners;

it is a question of humility. We show such respect in our dealings with other people, though no one insists on the letter of the matter. If I greet someone while still wearing a glove because it is extremely cold, that may be understandable; but in this case, removing it means something. The further a person advances in the Christian life, the more he receives an inward assurance about how he ought to conduct himself. This often happens to me with my glasses: as I approach to venerate an icon, my hand immediately rises and removes them. I do not even venerate the icon while wearing my glasses. In connection with all this, I would also like to add the following: if you do not put in the full amount asked for a candle

because the price marked at the candle counter seems too high to you, that is theft. When we go to Church, it is best not to appoint ourselves as price inspectors. We should not be the ones deciding what the candle is worth. Do you want to offer a small coin? Offer it. But do not hide what you are doing, put in less, and then take the candle. “But I have no more money.” Then ask the Church to let you owe the balance, and take one candle. Perhaps you put in one drachma today, but remember that the next time you go, you owe another two or three. Add it then. Is that such a terrible thing?

Suppose I have a ten-drachma coin today, the candle costs three, and I have no change. Put in the ten, and another time take a candle without paying, if you insist on exact accounting. But do not set the price yourself and say that it should cost more or less. The purpose of the candle is not merely to be sold so that the Church can recover its exact cost. Through the candle offerings, many needs of the Church are met—needs of which we know nothing. The Church certainly has income, but it also has expenses. And if the pilgrim or parishioner learns that roughly sixty percent of the gross receipts is taken away, he will see that there may not even be enough left for the Church committee to buy candles again. Did you know that?

I do not wish to rebuke those who take so much, nor those who ask so much. But to avoid setting the candle’s value myself, then judging and condemning them, and allowing the prayer I came to offer to turn into bitterness rather than thanksgiving, this is what I would do: the candle is priced at five drachmas, while I know it costs one. I would put in my one drachma and take no candle. How many needs does the Church have? So many things are required, and the costliest things are found in the Church. The church building itself costs many millions. What harm is there in simply offering your small coin? Will the world end because you do not light a candle? If lighting it will fill you with bitterness, then leave the candle alone. “But I cannot afford it.” Then take it on credit; let the Church extend you credit...

That is what the poor father of many children from Corfu did when he took the lamp of Saint Spyridon. Not only did he take Saint Spyridon’s lamp, but he put another one in its place, so no one ever realized that it had been taken until he returned it and the miracle was revealed. The Lord has no need of our money. He looks at each person’s intention. You entered the Church and found the candle expensive. Perhaps the committee there does not handle matters very spiritually. In some places, after all, we find no fixed price at all. We go to provincial towns and find a candle of pure wax for fifty lepta, while here they charge five, six, or seven drachmas.

I know that each person has his own reasoning and his own needs. Is their aim to drive people away? I do not know; that is not my concern. I have never gone to inspect the candle counter. I offer my small coin. If I do not have much, I give what I have. If I have nothing at all, I still enter; no one can stop me. Yet some people worry about what they are expected to put into the candle box. Have you seen this? Then I light my little candle merely to be seen by others, worrying about what the churchwarden or someone else will say. I go to Church to pray. I go to give thanks, to ask for something, or for some other purpose for which one goes to Church. What, then, makes this theft? It is the evil one entering into the matter and embittering you. You are no longer sincere or a cheerful giver. Why? Because we keep weighing and measuring everything.

You know that some people put in one drachma and take a candle worth fifteen. Women do this especially often. Men tend to be more careful and exact, seeing the matter differently. A woman may drop in a two-drachma coin and take three candles worth fifteen drachmas each, her hand reaching over without looking at what it takes. Then, because the candle fund is taxed on its gross receipts, as I said, the accounts are offset in such a way that nothing remains in the end. Let us not fall into this trap and allow Satan to mock us. We stand to lose and gain no spiritual benefit. Another question is this: during the Divine Liturgy, should women wear a head covering? According to the Apostle Paul, yes. If one reads First Corinthians,

chapter eleven, verses one through sixteen, one will see that a woman should be covered. It need not be a headscarf; it may be a hat—not a hat meant to display her uncovered head, but one that actually covers it. It should be a modest hat appropriate to her age: a sober one for an older woman, and a different but still modest one suited to a younger woman. This is necessary because, if we accept that we go to Church to pray, a woman should not appear before Christ with her head uncovered. Yet here is the strange irony: I know many elderly women here who wear a headscarf, but when they go forward to receive Holy Communion, they remove it and throw it back.

At the very moment when they ought to cover themselves even more fully, they remove the headscarf, throw it behind them, and approach with their heads bare. There is the problem. It is wrong. I repeat this because younger women especially, and even some otherwise serious women, have not understood the matter. They cannot bring themselves to humble themselves and place even a turban on their heads. Let them wear a dignified covering, a respectable hat suited to their age and modesty, and thus present themselves in the Church. This is what the Gospel asks; this is what the Apostle Paul asks. If you wish to see that a woman should be covered in the Church, you will find it, as I said, in First Corinthians, chapter eleven, verses one through sixteen. Another question is

this: during the service the priest says, “And those whom each of us has in mind.” Does this mean the living or the departed? “In Christ, all are alive.” Christ is immortality, and as the immortal King He has authority over both the dead and the living. On the Holy Table, upon the diskos, Christ is there in the center; the Most Holy Theotokos is at His right; angels, archangels, the heavenly powers, and Saints are at His left. Before Him are the departed, for whom we brought our prosphora and lists of names and from whom a particle has been taken; and we who are present there among the living are also represented. We are all present there. Therefore, since our prayer is directed to Christ,

we may pray for the living, and we may also pray for the departed. “And those whom each of us has in mind”—and what else is added? “And all men and all women”: both male and female, women and men, all of them. But we do not participate attentively in the prayers, and so these things sound like lofty language to us. We do not know what is taking place. I mention this opportunity even though these matters belong to the explanation of the Holy Eucharist. As you know, we have given twenty-seven talks interpreting the Divine Liturgy, where these things are treated at length. For now, however, I want to tell you this: if you wish to be edified and to edify others, learn to go to Church early in the morning.

That part has ended; the third bell has rung, and this part too will soon come to an end. If possible, you should arrive even before the priest. Of course, some people, because of their circumstances and responsibilities, cannot come to the Church early. These include those caring for the sick, mothers, and others who have only returned from work at daybreak, and so forth. I am not speaking of those who came home at dawn from some sinful embrace, but of the faithful. A person needs to be there, especially when the Proskomedia begins. There is an ancient custom, still observed in the holy monasteries of the Holy Mountain: at a certain moment during Matins (Orthros), a little bell is rung.

The Proskomedia is taking place, and everyone present—the monks removing their caps—stands and commemorates all the souls they can call to mind: parents, relatives, teachers, even enemies, both the living and the departed, so that a particle may be taken out for them. When the little bell rings, the priest inside is saying to those outside, “Commemorate whomever you wish.” Meanwhile, he removes particles and says, “Remember, O Lord; remember, O Lord.” Woe to those who have died and left people behind who lie sleeping while the Proskomedia is being celebrated in the Church. They too will be repaid in the same coin. My God—just think what awaits us all.

We have the idea that the Divine Liturgy is only for ourselves. Once, when I happened to be in the sanctuary during the Proskomedia, I saw slips of paper bearing only the name of the living person who had brought the prosphoron. My good man, you are here yourself. Why must your own name be commemorated at the Prothesis? Be present when the priest calls, “With the fear of God, faith,” and receive Holy Communion. Have you no one else? Did you spring up like a mushroom? Have you no father, mother, wife, husband, brothers or sisters, grandfather, or neighbors who had no one to remember them? Have you nobody at all? Where has your love gone? It is love that costs nothing and causes no pain. Your love is gone. You have become like a snail shut inside its shell, caring about no one and understanding nothing of what is taking place. A person should know how to offer love and how to store up spiritual treasure.

Come to the Church early, then, and let your mouth run through the names one after another, like beads on a prayer rope. Call everyone to mind; Christ does not grow weary. The priest performs his work there, removing particles for those whose names have been given to him, for certain people dear to him, for some who have asked him to remember them, for his own people, and so forth. But they are not the only ones; there are others as well. Sometimes we hear a rather foolish question: “Should I put many names on my list or only a few? Should I include only the person whose memorial service is being held, or should I add others?” They imagine that the person for whom the memorial is being held will somehow receive less if other names are included. It is as though someone were saying, “Today no one else may go out and warm himself in the sun. I shall bring my husband out to enjoy the sunshine, but then all the others will come out too.”

What could the others possibly take away from your husband or your child? What do you imagine God to be? An umbrella with room for only two or three people beneath it? What do you imagine Him to be—a little brazier, a heater that can warm only one person’s feet, and perhaps only one foot? Is that how you think of God? Bring the whole world before Him, and He sanctifies them all. Where is your love? Can you not remember someone abandoned in your village, or some forgotten relative? Show love, then, and commemorate that person. Let a little particle be removed for him and later placed into the Blood of the Lamb, so that he too may receive some consolation. From the other world he will say, “How many times he remembered me—may his tongue be sanctified.” He will intercede for you from there. If priests truly understood this, Hell itself would have been emptied.

If they truly knew what the Holy Eucharist means, what the Divine Liturgy means, and what spiritual power it contains for souls and for the Holy Fathers commemorated there, things would be very different. Woe to a Roman Catholic when he dies, for this is not found there. A list of names may be placed there, but there is no sacrifice, no offering, no particle, and no help afterward. There is only cold marble and wafers baked in an oven. There is nothing of this there. People should know what Orthodoxy is. Yet Christ will deprive us of it because we are not worthy to possess it, and then we shall understand. If we do not understand it here, we shall understand when we pass into the next life. We shall understand then, when there are no people left here to offer this sacrifice—a sacrifice about which we ourselves now care so little, even though we see it from afar, as if nothing were happening.

While these words are being said and we are praying, we should call all people to mind and place them before Christ, so that they too may partake indirectly through the Blood of Christ. When someone outside the sanctuary hears the chanter singing, “We praise Thee,” he should understand that within the sanctuary the consecration of the Holy Gifts is taking place. The bread is changed into the Body and the wine into the Blood through the invocation, descent, and power of the Holy Spirit. In his prayer, the bishop asks God the Father to send down the Holy Spirit: “Send down Thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth. And make this bread the precious Body of Thy Christ.” Amen.

“And that which is in this cup, the precious Blood of Thy Christ.” Amen. “Changing them by Thy Holy Spirit.” Amen, amen, amen. From that moment, then, we have the Body of Christ and the Blood of Christ. During the Communion hymn, whether it is being chanted or someone is speaking outside, the priest and his deacon—or the bishop and the other clergy—receive Holy Communion inside the sanctuary. Then they come out and give Holy Communion to the faithful from the remainder of the Lamb from which they themselves communed. When the priest returns inside and the chanter begins, “We have seen the true Light,” the priest, bishop, or deacon takes the holy diskos. Look at all those little souls commemorated there—a great multitude upon it.

He places their particles into the holy chalice, which contains the Blood of Christ, wiping the diskos clean with the sponge and saying, “Wash away, O Lord, by Thy precious Blood, the sins of Thy servants commemorated here.” This is the greatest consolation and the greatest benefit: afterward, this little soul comes indirectly into contact with the Blood of Christ. The Church of Christ continues to work upon souls and to retouch them—if you understand the expression—to correct them, restore them, and make them whole until the end of the age. If faithful people remain here who believe rightly in Christ and pray, they can even bring a person out of Hell until the end of the age.

Saint Gregory brought out even an unbaptized man, and an angel came and told him, “Stop praying.” Yet that man too was delivered. The angel said, “But do not pray again for someone unbaptized.” Do you understand? We do not know these things. This is precisely why people no longer bake prosphora in their homes. Satan has driven this custom out of the home. Now the prosphoron is bought from the baker in a paper bag and brought to church at the Creed. At the Creed! What use is it then? The offering must be brought in the morning so that a particle can be removed during the Proskomedia. What can they do with it afterward? If there is a Divine Liturgy during the week, the priest may keep the slip of paper and commemorate the person then. Someone celebrated according to the new calendar, but the offering will arrive according to the old calendar; the person will be commemorated thirteen days later. Do you understand?

Our people do not know these things, and they do not wish to learn them. If a person understood the meaning and purpose of the Divine Liturgy, the meaning and purpose of the spotless offering, the meaning of the prosphoron, and the purpose of attending the Church, he would have secured Paradise by eighty percent. It would be impossible for him to remain unmoved. He would begin to fear that if he is indifferent to others now, others will soon be indifferent to him—and woe to him then. That would compel him to begin the spiritual work. Do you understand? This is the matter of the offerings, and this is what the man here is referring to. We shall stop here, however, because the other subject is extensive and there is not enough time.

καθηγητές, και δύο μάλιστα είχαν σπουδάσει ειδικά αγγλική γλώσσα στην Αγγλία, στο Λονδίνο. Όταν φτάσανε μπροστά στα πατερικά χωρία, δεν μπόρεσαν να αποδώσουν το νόημα το οποίο αποδίδεται στη δικιά μας γλώσσα. Το άλλο βιβλίο που έγραψα, το πρώτο, το 1957, που είναι «Το αντίδοτον του θανάτου», δεκαπέντε χρόνια ήδη το έχουν στη Βοστώνη και το επεξεργάζονται άνθρωποι του πνεύματος. Δεν κατόρθωσαν ακόμη να το μεταγλωττίσουν λόγω των πατερικών κειμένων. Δεν μπορούν να αποδώσουν το νόημα που αποδίδουν οι Πατέρες μας με την ελληνική μας γλώσσα, και ακόμη δεν έχει μεταγλωττιστεί. Μη σας φαίνεται παράξενο αυτό. Σε μια λέξη μόνο λέγει ο Χριστός μας: «Οὐκ ἦλθον καταλῦσαι τὸν νόμον, ἀλλὰ πληρῶσαι». Πώς θα το ερμηνεύσεις;

σου φαίνεται πολύ ακριβό στη θήκη που βρίσκεται στο παγκάρι, είναι κλεψιά. Καλό είναι, όταν πηγαίνουμε στην εκκλησία, να μην κάνουμε την αγορανομία εμείς. Να μη γίνουμε εμείς αυτοί οι οποίοι θα κοστολογήσουμε το κερί. Θέλεις να προσφέρεις μια δεκάρα; Πρόσφερέ την. Μα όχι να κρυφτώ, δώσε εσύ λίγα. Δεν παίρνεις, χέρι μου. «Μα δεν έχω άλλα». Πες, λοιπόν, στην εκκλησία να σου κάνει βερεσέ. Και πάρε ένα κερί. Πήγες μια δραχμή σήμερα, αλλά να ξέρεις ότι αύριο που θα ξαναπάς οφείλεις δυο-τρεις δραχμές. Πρόσθεσέ τα. Χάθηκε ο κόσμος;

Σήμερα έχω ένα δεκάρικο και το κερί κάνει τρεις δραχμές, δεν έχω ψιλά να ρίξω· ρίξε το δεκάρικο και άλλη φορά που θα πας πάρε και μην πληρώνεις, εφόσον θέλεις κοστολόγιο ακριβές. Εσύ όμως μην κοστολογείς και πεις ότι κάνει περισσότερο, κάνει λιγότερο. Το κερί δεν έχει τον σκοπό να πουληθεί για να μαζέψει το ακριβές αντίτιμον στην εκκλησία. Μέσω του κεριού οικονομούνται πολλά πράγματα στην Εκκλησία, τα οποία εμείς δεν τα ξέρουμε. Η Εκκλησία έχει βέβαια έσοδα, αλλά έχει και έξοδα. Και όταν μάθει ο προσκυνητής, ο ενορίτης, ότι περίπου 60% από τα ακαθάριστα τα παίρνουνε, θα δει ότι δεν φτάνει να πάρουν κερί ξανά στην Εκκλησία. Η Επιτροπή δεν φτάνει να έχει χρήματα να ξαναπάρει κερί. Το ξέρετε αυτό το πράγμα;

Ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος έβγαλε αβάπτιστον και πήγε άγγελος και του είπε: «Σταμάτα να προσεύχεσαι». Αλλά βγήκε κι αυτός. Αλλά μην ξαναπροσευχηθείς για αβάπτιστον. Καταλάβατε; Δεν το ξέρουμε εμείς. Γι’ αυτό ακριβώς και δεν φτιάχνουν στα σπίτια πρόσφορα. Ο σατανάς τα έβγαλε αυτά από το σπίτι και αγοράζονται στη χαρτοσακούλα από τον φούρναρη και το πηγαίνουμε στο Πιστεύω. Στο Πιστεύω! Τι να την κάνεις στο Πιστεύω; Η προσφορά πρέπει να πάει το πρωί, για να βγει μερίδα στην προσκομιδή. Μετά τι θα την κάνουν; Αν υπάρχει λειτουργία μέσα στη βδομάδα, θα το κρατήσει το χαρτάκι ο ιερεύς και θα μνημονεύσει τον άνθρωπο τότε. Γιόρταζε με το νέο και θα δεχτεί με το παλιό. Έπειτα από δεκατρείς ημέρες θα μνημονευτεί εκεί. Καταλάβατε;
