Summary

The lecturer argues that non-Orthodox departed persons should not be commemorated in the Proskomedia because they separated themselves from the sacramental communion of the Orthodox Church. Human warfare and cruelty arise from the misuse of freedom, while Christ calls believers to forgive persecution, reject vengeance, and act like the Good Samaritan. Questions about repentant criminals and their victims are placed beyond ordinary human logic, emphasizing God’s love for sinners enslaved by evil and the transcendent operation of divine justice.

Continuing from our previous talk, this evening we shall once again draw on questions from the audience. Those who were with us at the last talk will, I think, remember that our subject arose from certain questions considered capable of benefiting more than one person, and so we bring them before a wider audience for discussion. We completed one series in the previous talk, and tonight I shall continue with another question before me, which someone has submitted.

It says: “My uncle was an Evangelical. But I commemorate him very regularly in the Church. Is that wrong?”

He died an Evangelical; he died a heretic. He does not believe in the Church, the Mysteries, the clergy, or, above all, the Holy Eucharist. He does not believe in the Saints, in the Ever-Virginity of the Theotokos, in the Holy Relics, or in miracles. He believes in none of these things. So what place does he have here now? You commemorate him, you bring me his name, I write it on your paper, and you make your offering. Yet he himself severed his communion with the Church of Christ. Consequently, what place does he have in the Church of Christ, when throughout his life he himself disregarded the Church of Christ?

Leave him to be commemorated in his own church. You may tell me, “That is how I feel; that is how I understand it.” In any case, you asked me, and I was obliged to answer you. Let me also take this opportunity to tell you something further, because you are not the only one who does this; others do it as well. Some have Roman Catholic relatives, others Protestant relatives, and perhaps some even have Jehovah’s Witnesses. Out of affection, sorrow, or whatever else it may be, they even bring an offering to the Church for these people. It is not accepted. I remember once reading of something that happened during the Proskomedia.

The priest was reading the names and removing particles for those commemorated, secretly and quietly, as is done during the Proskomedia in the morning, when we Orthodox bring our prosphoron and our paper with the names. An angel standing beside him took certain particles from the Holy Diskos and removed them. When asked why, the angel replied, “This person is a heretic; he has no place here.” So no matter how much you torment yourself, you cannot help your loved one in this way. Nothing is being taken away from me, nor is anything being taken away from you. He himself left his place empty. Those who doubt this, whether moved by sentiment or by a mistaken understanding of the true faith, will remember me when they go to the next life. There is no other way for this to be proved.

When they go there, they will remember what Panagopoulos said in answer to this question. Another question related to these matters is the following: “Why do they persecute the Orthodox...”

The Orthodox. “Why are musical instruments not used in the Church? What becomes of David’s words, ‘with strings and instrument,’ and ‘with psaltery and harp’?” This is something that concerns certain people. As you know, in recent times, because of our papist tendencies and Western ways of thinking, some of our churches—not many, certainly—have introduced harmoniums, wind instruments, and the like. This person’s argument, then, is that David clearly says that we should praise God “with strings and instrument” and “with psaltery and harp.”

Since he apparently finds support for this in Holy Scripture, he means to ask: why should it not be so? And yet it is not so. One might wish to know why. David did indeed write a thousand years before Christ, and in his Psalms we find the phrases “with strings and instrument” and “with psaltery and harp.” But later, five hundred years afterward, God abolished this practice and did away with the instruments through another prophet—specifically, through the Prophet Amos, in chapter 5, verse 23: “Take away from Me the sound of your songs, and I will not hear the melody of your instruments.” I will not hear it!

Do you understand why? Yes, it had once been permitted, but it was later abolished. You must therefore read Holy Scripture as a whole and believe in the divine inspiration of the Orthodox Church, which has made no mistake in what it has permitted or forbidden. Let us continue. Someone asks: “God is love. Yet in the Old Testament, through Moses and the Prophet Elijah, thousands of people were slain. Is this not a sin, and how can it be justified? God, who loves mankind so greatly...”

“...does not intervene in great disasters and terrible crimes. He sees blood being shed in abundance and thousands of living people mourning, yet God is not moved. How can this be explained?” Such thoughts circulate widely, especially today, and particularly among people who have not studied these matters deeply. God is love, they say. Well, is He not? I answer: He is love. But is He not also justice? God is not only love, in the way we would like Him to be. God is also justice. And woe to the person who reduces God to one thing, as though He stood on one leg.

God is love, but at the same time God is also justice. This was especially evident in the Old Testament, when justice was at work: “an eye for an eye.” What, then, are we to say? Did God commit a crime, for example, by permitting the fourteen thousand infants to be slaughtered? Is He responsible? Did God commit a crime by permitting the Prophet Elijah to slay four hundred and fifty men with his own hand? Does it not strike you that one man slew four hundred and fifty? If they had merely sneezed together—never mind picked up stones against him—he could not have stood his ground. Surely he did not hold them back with a machine gun so that they could not approach him. He slaughtered them with a knife. Does it not strike you that God Himself gave him the strength to execute them and cleanse the situation of its corruption? Does that not make an impression on you? If God were love but not also justice, could He possibly have done such things? No; all these things have their justification. Many related questions arise here. For example, did God not say, “You shall not murder”? Then how could His own servant kill? It is true that He said, “You shall not murder.” And Elijah, who killed, did not do so before the Law...

Strangely enough, he did so after the Law. When God gave the commandment “You shall not murder” through Moses in the Decalogue, it was about fifteen hundred years before Christ. When Elijah killed those four hundred and fifty men—and also twice called down fire from heaven, consuming fifty men and their centurion each time—it was about a thousand years before Christ. Thus, the law “You shall not murder” had already existed for five hundred years. How, then, could Elijah be justified in killing? This question naturally arises for many people who have not been instructed in matters of faith and Holy Scripture. The answer is similar to what we said earlier about musical instruments. It is true that the commandment “You shall not murder” existed then and remains in force to this day.

But there is also a command to put certain people to death, and the world does not know about it. Is there a Law in the Old Testament, or is there not? The answer must surely be yes. And is Deuteronomy also found in the Old Testament? Those who read it will say, “Of course Deuteronomy is there.” Have you ever read Deuteronomy to see what it says and answered for yourself why it is called Deuteronomy? Does the very name not speak of a second law? And what does this second law say? You understand where this thought is leading. In Deuteronomy, then, there are exceptions to “You shall not murder”: there are cases in which you are to put someone to death. In those cases, killing is both permitted and commanded.

You were to remove, destroy, and clear away prophets who led people to foreign gods rather than to the true God, and, in general, those who deceived people and drew them away to foreign gods. If God’s justice were acting today as it did then, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Protestants, and heretics would be subject to the Law’s judgment, just as such people were in those days. That is what would have to happen. But today we are not living in the age of justice under the Law; we are living in the age of grace. Christ came into the world, as we read in Isaiah chapter 61, a passage repeated in Luke chapter 4...

Christ took up that passage to read in the synagogue when He stood as the reader. Beginning with verse 16, we find these things written there. He said that He had come to proclaim “the acceptable year of the Lord,” so that whoever chooses to embrace metanoia, repentance, may be saved. He came to give people a period of time in which those who repent and return may be saved. Today we live in the age of grace, not in the age of the Law. In the Old Testament there was a Law that demanded justice, and that Law was enforced. Therefore, whenever there was disobedience, as Paul says in Hebrews, it “received a just recompense.” People were judged and punished immediately. So we should not find this strange.

Read Deuteronomy chapter 13, verse 5, and Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 20. There you will find the death penalty commanded, and this was what the Prophet Elijah carried out, being zealous and seeking the true justice of God. Do not find it strange. As for the question of why Christ—why God—does not weep when blood is shed by unbelievers, that is not really a serious difficulty. God left mankind free. He gave us reason and planted many things within us: love, compassion, goodness, longsuffering toward others—everything we need. Man chose not to cultivate these things, and that is why we see people tearing one another apart.

If God were to intervene by force and compel us to become good, then our goodness would have no value. He wants us to become good willingly: to seek His teaching, learn it, and put it into practice. Then we will not bite others; and even when they bite us, we will forgive them. For this is the remarkable thing about Orthodox teaching: a person must not take revenge, even when he is punished in this world. He must turn the other cheek as well. This is the Orthodox Christian: he is persecuted but does not persecute; insulted but does not insult; reviled but does not revile; treated unjustly but does no injustice. Therefore, when people have not accepted Christ, it is only to be expected that they will tear one another apart, that society will become a jungle, and that the law will prevail...

...that the strongest will rise to the top. So, my dear friend, do not be surprised that God watches all this. He is not pleased by what is happening, but He watches, especially in the age of the New Testament. In the Old Testament, people received according to their deeds and their own desires, and they were punished when punishment was required, because that was what the Law demanded at the time. God is indeed love; but why do you conceal the fact that He is also justice? This, too, is something that should sober us. It is related to the point at hand, so let me mention it since it has arisen. Imagine God as standing with two feet: one here in this temporary life, and the other there in eternity. He spans both realms, possessing authority over both the dead and the living, as death reigns over both. Here there is mercy; there, judgment.

Judgment is without mercy. There is no partiality in judgment. That is why, as I told you on another occasion, when a person enters the Church and looks at the iconostasis—the Lord, the Theotokos (God-bearer), and what are called the Royal Doors—there he sees God’s mercy and compassion. Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, God saves and forgives man, gives him His Body and Blood for the remission of sins and eternal life, and brings him through the Royal Doors into the Kingdom of Heaven. But if a person is unwilling in this world to be reconciled with Christ through the intercessions of the Theotokos and all the Saints, and so receive God’s mercy in this world...

...then one day he will find himself where he neither wants nor desires to be: before the throne of God’s justice. Here is the throne of mercy; there is the throne of God’s justice, symbolized by the bishop’s throne. Whenever you see the bishop’s throne, see in it the throne of Judgment. You will also notice that all the icons in the Church, both of the Lord and of the Theotokos, have vigil lamps filled with oil, but the bishop’s throne has no lamp and no oil. Why? Because there is no mercy there once a person has departed from this world. And this is being brought to your remembrance while you are still here in this world. So let us not take these matters and measure them by our own feelings.

Was He grieved over the blood of the fourteen thousand infants? In what way did God wrong those fourteen thousand infants? Tell me, how did He wrong them? Did He take away their lives? He permitted it, and Herod’s wickedness took their lives. Agreed. But did those children come into the world to live, or to die? They came to die; they did not come to remain alive. Man did not come into this world merely to live. He came to die, and after dying, to live. That life has no end; this life does have an end. And I ask you: suppose God had struck Herod down and removed him, had intervened and taken him out of the way, and those fourteen thousand infants had been spared. How many of them would now be in Paradise?

Take away from that number the sexually immoral, the adulterers, the men who would have lain with men, the blasphemers, the unbelievers, the atheists—take them all away, and tell me how many would remain. What harm have they suffered now, when their blood served as Baptism, and they are fourteen thousand martyrs of Christ, beholding for all eternity the three-sunned countenance of the Godhead? In what way were they harmed? Because their mothers lost the fine young sons who might later have trampled them underfoot—is that it? But we have never reflected, never truly considered what we are here on earth. Our leaders call us “inhabitants of the earth.” Are we inhabitants of the earth? Is that ultimately true? How can you be an inhabitant of the earth and yet belong to eternity? Then why do you depart from here, and often at a time you least expect?

Man is not an inhabitant of the earth, my dear friends. He is only a tenant here. Paul says plainly, “Here we have no continuing city.” We do not remain; we are not meant for this place, but “we seek the city that is to come.” So how can you tell me that you are an inhabitant of the earth? Such words from our great men are empty. Leave those great men aside. A Christian has never believed that anything in this world is permanent. A Christian lives between the past and the future, suspended between past and future. According to Paul there is no present, and in reality there is no present. Within a fraction of a second it is gone and never truly existed. Where is the present? Whatever I have said is already in the past, and whatever I am about to say is still in the future.

Man is suspended between past and future. Are you not afraid that, within a fraction of a second, you may cease to be here? Where is this understanding? Who ever thinks about it? Does Paul not write, “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead”? He says nothing about the present. If a person considered that, within a fraction of a second, he might be summoned from the other world to give an account, he would not conduct himself as he does, nor would he be the little beast he has become in this world today. So let us not view these things through our own emotions. God does not desire wars. God does not desire slaughter. But neither does He become a policeman. God is not a law-enforcement officer. He does not police man; He has left man free. Let man listen to God.

Then he will not be able to slaughter or kill. He will become a Good Samaritan. He will be neither a robber nor a Levite: not one of the robbers who drink the blood and sweat of others, nor one of the Levites who take nothing but also give nothing. People will become Samaritans; they will give rather than take. But not everyone wished to put this teaching, with its lofty meaning, into practice—or even to accept it. That is why, as you know, the world today is a jungle. Yet people expect God to act as their nursemaid, and they regard Him as a sadist who watches blood being shed. How many people do not want God? Who has truly wanted God? Which one of us truly wants God? I am not speaking about unbelievers. Nor am I speaking about those who belong to the various...

...groups that do not even wish to discuss such matters. I am speaking about ourselves: we who make the sign of the Cross and write such questions, or others like them. Do we truly want God? Because if we wanted Him, we would do exactly what He says. Do we do what He says? Do we? You want God to be just toward those outside. Why should He not also be just toward those within? Why should He be just toward them and not toward you as well? And I bring you to David’s thought, expressed in these words: “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” If You take up Your papers, Your pencils, and Your books and come to settle accounts with me...

...will I be able to stand? And how great is His mercy toward me, when in ten thousand ways I shed blood, even though my hands do not appear bloodstained? Before the justice of God, we are stained with blood according to the way He knows how to weigh and measure things. We are not even worthy to appear before Him, and then we would not dare entertain thoughts like these. Such thoughts belong to those still far from God, or to people who have not considered the matter of God from every side. That is precisely why they demand outward justice: they want a God standing there with a switch in His hand, forbidding one person to trouble another, and so forth. He could do that too, if man permitted Him. But today man does not permit God to do it. He does not.

Man acknowledges no rights at all in God. He has killed God, buried God, and put the matter out of his mind. Yet every time you kill God, you have already killed yourself first, because only the dead do not believe in the spirit—the dead, those who are physically dead. They will see God face to face, but by then it will be too late. Blessed is the person who dies before he dies, because the one who dies before he dies will not die when he dies. But those who refuse to let their ego die here will truly die when they die, and that is the most wretched and dreadful thing. The next question says this: Do the righteous in Paradise know about their relatives who are in Hell?

Do they grieve and suffer for them, or do they take no interest in them at all? I cannot speak with authority, because then something a little girl once said to her grandfather would apply to me as well. He had spoken very authoritatively—and I have told you this story before.

The children were talking about Hell, life beyond the grave, and so forth. They disagreed among themselves, but they kept talking: does it exist or not? Then the grandfather stepped in with patriarchal authority and said, “None of that exists. Now be on your way.” The old man had delivered the final word. But the little girl spoke up and asked, “Grandfather, have you ever died?”

How can you speak so absolutely? Have you ever gone there—have you died, crossed over, and seen what it is like? The same would apply to me if I claimed to say exactly what happens there. I would have to have gone, seen what it is like, and returned to tell you. Yet there are indications available to us here. I do not wish to call them proofs, because anyone could dispute them. Nevertheless, from certain events regarded as revelations of the departed to the living, it appears that they know when someone dear to them has departed this life and has gone to Hell. Likewise, those in Hell know that another person dear to them is in a better place than they are. They know this.

They are informed of it; it is not that, as spirits, they possess the power to see everything here from there. Omnipresence is an attribute of God alone. We see only what we are shown and go only where our angel guides us. Many people can tell you that departed relatives visited them, and when they asked them to stay, the relatives replied, “No, we must leave; we have work to do.” Then you see them depart at once, being led away to their appointed place. There are personal experiences of this kind among Orthodox believers. But do they grieve or suffer? That cannot be so. Suppose, for example, that I were saved and passed over to the right-hand side, but then sat there grieving and tearing out my hair because my mother, my father, my wife, or my children had gone to Hell...

...then that place would be Hell, not Paradise. Such fleshly emotions do not exist beyond the grave. There is no “my dear little wife,” “my darling husband,” “my little child,” or “my dear father.” Such things do not exist there. That condition is beyond such attachments. This kind of emotion belongs to the flesh. If we carried the bitterness, sorrows, family disasters, and financial ruin of this life into Paradise, we would turn Paradise into Hell. All those things are left behind. They belong to the flesh. Therefore, by the very nature of things, it cannot be so. To give you a more definite answer: when I go there, if they permit me to write back, I will tell you. Pray that I die quickly, so the letter has time to arrive! Let us continue. This is what I choose to believe...

What follows is similar and overlaps somewhat with the previous questions. Someone naturally wonders: A wicked man tormented many people during his life in various ways. For the most part, he even took lives. He committed crimes and caused many tears to be shed. At the end, however, he repents and is saved. What then becomes of the sufferings and the blood of those unjustly killed, who await recompense? How will those who suffered in this life receive satisfaction, and how will Divine Justice act? These questions attempt to force the Gospel into the confines of human logic. But they do not fit within that logic. Christianity is not logic, though neither is it irrationality. It is neither according to human reason nor contrary to reason; it is above reason. The things of faith are neither irrational nor merely logical. They transcend reason. This tiny pair of pincers—the little human mind—cannot grasp them. Although, of course, these particular objections do not really stand up at all. More generally, however, when a person reaches the point where such thoughts...

...lead him toward unbelief, he must say, “Get behind me, Satan.” Leave God to put these things in order. How could I arrange them? How could I settle accounts between myself and others? For do you know what position man immediately assumes? He imagines that he is just and God is unjust; that he loves while God does not; that he feels pain while God does not. Do you see where he has placed himself? He is sitting on thorns like a fakir, sitting on needles. At any moment they are ready to fling him off, make him an unbeliever, and cast him into the conviction that nothing exists. Why? Because his logic—those little pincers of his—cannot justify these things. He cannot arrange them neatly within himself, do you understand? So the question says: “A wicked man tormented many people during his life in various ways.” When you call him wicked, you mean it in an exemplary sense.

When is a person wicked? A person is wicked when he is under the influence of Satan, and he is good when he is under the influence of Christ. Now let us take this wicked man whom, as you say further on, we must punish so that others may receive satisfaction. I ask you: do we punish this wicked man? He is wicked because he is a slave of Satan. As Satan’s slave, he recognizes no rights in another person and even takes that person’s life. But how do others treat someone who is a slave? Tell me: suppose a prisoner of war is captured. How is he treated? The International Red Cross—the humanitarian concern that flows from the Bible and underlies the International Red Cross—was not simply fashioned by men; it was fashioned by God. But that is another subject.

A prisoner of war is regarded as a sacred person. You have no right to strike him or leave him to die. You must care for him and provide everything he needs. He is a sacred person. Why, then, should someone held captive by Satan, the cruelest master in the world, not also be regarded as a sacred person? Why should he not also receive compassion from men and from God Himself? God loves that man. Christ loves him more than anyone else does. A mother has ten children. Nine love her, while one curses her. That one child falls ill. What will the mother do? What will she do for that little beast? She will leave the other nine and sit beside the child who curses her and refuses to accept her. She will...

...give him his milk, his medicine, and his injection. “Get out of here! I’m throwing you out!” he shouts. He curses her, rebuffs her, and drives her away, yet you still see the mother sitting there. Is that not a mother’s tender compassion? That beast may turn against her, but toward that child she still shows love, forbearance, and mercy. How does God look upon a wicked person? With pity, awe, love, and compassion. He sees Satan dragging him along and causing what appear to be injuries. Yet the wicked man ultimately harms no one outside himself; he harms himself. A wicked man kills another person, but it is himself he has killed. The other person ought to have been ready to die. However violently he shatters the other, he has merely placed him in a glass case, putting him on display. The other person must be ready to die. So on what basis do we simply declare that the man is wicked because he kills?

Can these judgments stand when we place them beneath the teaching of the Gospel? The robber—excuse me, Moses the Ethiopian—committed a hundred murders, yet he became a saint because he came to metanoia, to repentance. And did Paul not kill? Tell me, are there no killings charged to Paul’s account? There are killings. Do you ever read the Scriptures? “I did many things contrary to Him,” he says.

“I sinned.” Then everything changed. How many people did Constantine the Great kill? He was baptized, and he became great. It is finished; they were cleansed. Does that fit your logic? Stand aside, O man. Does it fit your idea of justice? Stand aside, O man. God’s justice is different. God judges differently. He makes recompense differently. Why are you demanding justice here? Yes, the man caused suffering. But were those who suffered then “satisfied”? What satisfaction are you speaking of? You are not the one who can compensate others or repay everything. You were merely like a hand wielding a piece of wood.

He was supposed to give satisfaction. Someone struck me, and a thousand incidents followed. So what? If I punish you, does that make you right while I remain wrong? Why are you right—because you struck me second, while I struck you first? My friend, I want you to rise above that, to show yourself the better person. That is what I saw in the Gospel. I did not see it in what we call justice. There is no justice here. And why do we not consider the other person—why was he not killed? Suppose someone was killed: might his killers actually have benefited him, because he departed sooner and otherwise might have sinned more or suffered greater condemnation? How can you pry into such matters and come out declaring, “This is how it is”? You take your position and deliver your verdict, as though it were just and serious. That is why I say: when a person tries, by means of reason...

and human standards, to judge the Gospel and its teaching, he will stumble. He cannot do it. Whoever wrote this question—I do not know whether it was a woman, a man, a young man, or a young woman—may have lost someone, just as another person had a question but did not put it into words. Let us suppose that I myself asked this question. I speak of all the evils other people have committed—this, that, and the other. But am I not evil before God? That man sinned against other people. But I sin, commit fornication and adultery, steal, and lie before God. Who, then, is the greater evildoer: the one who sins against other people, or the one who sins against God? At once the pen falls from your hand, and you stop formulating such questions. There are some things you simply cannot fit inside your head. As for everything I am saying, as I told you the day before yesterday...

There is neither the ability, let me tell you, nor the time to develop all this and exhaust these subjects. These matters touch upon the justice of God, and God has kept us away from it and shut the door to us: “Do not judge; do not probe what is beyond you.” Leave justice to Him. We judge in human terms, with mistakes, weaknesses, and our own reasoning. My range of vision is fifty yards; God works across eternity. God also knows what might have happened. He may have permitted someone to be killed because that person would have produced another Hitler and set all humanity on fire. How do you know what is taking place? Who is it that demands justice? “Do not touch him; let him live out his life.” Do I know what would happen?

How can a human being presume to resolve the justice of God or understand how God thinks? These are difficult matters, I tell you. I cannot do it, and even as I try to answer, I ache within, because I fear that I am creating a problem rather than shedding light on it. But I had to say something, and so I did. Further down there is another question. I see that this too is similar to the others: “Do those in Hell and those in Paradise have full awareness?” No, this is the same question, the very same one. I shall move on; forgive me. Another question says: “Why did our Most Holy Theotokos go to Elizabeth rather than to her own mother...

to learn about what had happened to her as the bearer of God?”

Was her mother still alive? Do you know that she was alive and that the Most Holy Theotokos avoided her? To ask this question, you must know, first, that her mother was alive, and second, that she avoided her and went to her kinswoman instead. We do not know this. Her mother may already have fallen asleep. So that side of the question has no basis. But that is not the main point. She went to Elizabeth because the angel had told her, “Your kinswoman is now in her sixth month.” That is why she went to Elizabeth. Her mother could not give her confirmation about such things.

When our Most Holy Theotokos received the Angel, the Archangel, she was perplexed. She reasoned logically, as we do. Naturally, she thought according to what she could understand—according to what her experience, her age, and her dealings with others had enabled her to know about pregnancy and all its circumstances and consequences. A concrete fact stood before her. And she asked the angel, as you know: “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” I have no husband. The man to whom I was entrusted was not given to me as a husband. If he had been given to me as a husband, what new thing would you be telling me? He was not given to me as a husband; he is my protector. The arrangement extends only to betrothal and no further. That is why she is the Bride Unwedded.

To reassure her, he said: “With God nothing shall be impossible.” Since God says it, why are you troubled? Besides, is it natural that your kinswoman, an old woman of a hundred, should be six months pregnant? Saintly woman, just as that extraordinary thing has happened and your kinswoman is six months pregnant, so it will be with you. “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” The Resurrection! The limits of nature are overturned, and the saying of the divine John Chrysostom is fulfilled: “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” There is no place for asking how. When God is at work, do you ask how it will happen? Do you ask how He will accomplish it? She kept this saying in her heart. It made the greatest impression upon her. It was something...

that she could verify immediately, and so she held on to it. As for what he had said would happen to her, those things lay in the future. But she had a test available now: “I will go and see whether the woman you say is six months pregnant truly is.” That is precisely why the Evangelist Luke, who writes such excellent Greek, uses the words “with haste.”

With her head lowered, she resolved, “I shall go and see.” And she set out and walked those one hundred and sixty kilometres from Nazareth, my dear friends, to reach the hill country. Today it is one hundred and sixty kilometres, now that the roads have been straightened and improved. How far must it have been then? A little girl of fourteen, alone.

Her mother had probably fallen asleep. She may not even have had anywhere to sleep herself. Bear in mind what did not exist in those days. Why does the Evangelist not mention whether she took anyone with her? How many days did she walk? At how many inns did she stay? Was she alone outdoors at night, and so forth? She arrived there with this longing, this determination: “I shall go and see.” That is why she went up there. She held on to the words, “Your kinswoman is now in her sixth month.” Tell me that, tell me that; the rest belongs to another matter. And then she said: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” Notice this. That was what was needed. And the angel departed, because once the Most Holy Theotokos gave her consent, the conception was accomplished. This, I think, is again the reason she went there: first, her mother may no longer have been alive; and second, prompted by what the angel had told her, she wished to verify whether, and how clearly, these extraordinary things were taking place in her kinswoman.

Did you see what happened there? A great revelation took place. Elizabeth said, “How is this happening to me? How did this come about? Whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” One was fourteen years old and the old woman was a hundred, yet she called her “the mother of my Lord”—try to make sense of that! How did this come about? How did you know? “When the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.” John greeted her from within. And how beautifully this is expressed. What else could he do—come out and shout, or stretch out his hand? The hymnographer of the Akathist puts it beautifully: he leaped as though singing. He made leaps and bounds within, as though singing and greeting his Lord and the mother of his Lord who stood outside. So much for that. Further down, another question says...

“I heard that women are not permitted to preach sermons. Is this true, and where is it stated?” You did not hear that correctly. There is a prohibition against women preaching, not at other gatherings, but in the Church. Women may preach in other settings. Indeed, we have women who are Equal-to-the-Apostles. The first among them was Mary Magdalene, who carried the message of the Resurrection to Italy. Our Most Holy Theotokos and other women also preached. In 1 Timothy 2:12, Paul forbids a woman to speak in the Church.

During the Divine Liturgy, a woman may not serve as a priest or take any such role. She is forbidden to speak. In general, a woman is forbidden to appear in the Church holding a place of precedence. Let some women who go and chant take heed of this. Nor may men chant if they truly fear God—unless they are appointed chanters. If they have no fear of God, they behave without restraint. But if they fear God, men too may not chant unless they are chanters. The chanter belongs to the minor clergy; he is a cleric, as is the reader. The clergy are divided into major and minor orders. The major clergy consist of the bishop, the priest, and the deacon; the minor clergy consist of the subdeacon, the reader, and the chanter.

A chanter must have received ordination. If you consult the Great Euchologion, you will find the service of ordination for both the chanter and the reader. If you read the sixty-ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles, you will find that it speaks about fasting and says: “If any bishop”—if any bishop, priest, deacon, subdeacon, reader, or chanter does not fast on Wednesday and Friday, or during Great Lent, let him be deposed. From what would a chanter be deposed? From his ordained office.

A woman is forbidden to serve either as a priestess or as a chanter. An exception by economy is made in women’s monasteries, where men are kept out as far as possible because of temptations, as you know. A woman is not to be at the chanter’s stand or in the sanctuary—not in the sanctuary. The priest is to light the vigil lamps in the sanctuary; the priest is to sweep the sanctuary; the priest is to change the coverings of the Holy Table in the sanctuary. The priest. “The sanctuary may be entered by priests alone.” This is what Orthodoxy teaches. What actually happens is not mine to govern or account for. Each person has God and will settle the matter with Him. Since I have been asked, I am obliged to remind you how the matter stands. Whoever wishes may observe it. If someone does not wish to, God is there. My task ends there.

The prohibition does not concern a woman giving a talk. A woman may lead a study group even inside the church building, though not during a service, when the building is being used for catechesis. Women catechists, for example, speak to boys, girls, and others. Outside the time of a service, the church building may be regarded as a hall where catechesis takes place. This is not only permitted but necessary, provided the woman has the qualifications and can fulfil this beneficial role. You will find the relevant passage, as I said, in 1 Timothy 2:12. Now, since Jesus came to earth in order to save us...

giving His blood, and since some Judas would have had to betray Him, why is Judas condemned as a traitor, when anyone of that age might have taken his place? This question troubles many people. It troubled me too when God granted me the grace to return to Christ. I have written about it, and there is a book entitled Why Judas Is Guilty. There is also a recording—if you cannot read, you can obtain it and listen to it—entitled The Responsibility of Judas. There you will see that matters are not as they appear to human reasoning. Judas is guilty, and God had no need of him. Yet once again, we examine things by our own logic and find God guilty instead of Judas. But I have not seen even those who defend Judas...

If he were a scapegoat, he ought also to be a holy martyr. Yet I have never seen any of them keep his icon at home or in their icon corner. To this day, no one has an icon of Judas. Apparently they have all wronged the poor man.

Πέθανε Ευαγγελικός, πέθανε αιρετικός, δεν πιστεύει την Εκκλησία, δεν πιστεύει τα Μυστήρια, δεν πιστεύει τον κλήρο, δεν πιστεύει τη Θεία Ευχαριστία κατ' εξοχήν, δεν πιστεύει τους Αγίους, δεν πιστεύει το Αειπάρθενον της Θεοτόκου, δεν πιστεύει τα Άγια Λείψανα, δεν πιστεύει τα θαύματα, δεν πιστεύει τίποτα. Τι δουλειά έχει λοιπόν αυτός τώρα στη μέση; Εσύ τον μνημονεύεις, φέρε, εγώ τον γράφω στο χαρτί σου, κάνεις, φτιάχνεις. Μόνος του έχει κόψει την επαφή με την Εκκλησία του Χριστού. Κατά συνέπεια, τι δουλειά έχει στην Εκκλησία του Χριστού, εφόσον αυτός δεν την υπολόγισε στη ζωή του, την Εκκλησία του Χριστού;

Λυπόταν το αίμα των 14.000 νηπίων; Σε τι τα αδίκησε ο Θεός τα 14.000 νήπια; Πείτε μου, σε τι τα αδίκησε; Τους αφαίρεσε τη ζωή; Επέτρεψε και η κακία του Ηρώδη αφαίρεσε τη ζωή. Σύμφωνοι. Γιατί, τα παιδιά ήρθαν στον κόσμο να ζήσουν ή να πεθάνουν; Ήρθανε να πεθάνουν, δεν ήρθαν για να ζήσουν. Ο άνθρωπος δεν ήρθε στον κόσμο να ζει. Ήρθε να πεθάνει και, αφού πεθάνει, για να ζει. Εκείνη η ζωή σου δεν έχει τέλος. Αυτή η ζωή σου έχει τέλος. Και ερωτώ: αν παραδεχτούμε ότι ο Θεός επάτασσε τον Ηρώδη και τον έβγαζε από τη μέση, γινότανε σπεκουλάτωρ και τον έβγαζε από τη μέση και γλίτωναν 14.000 μπέμπηδες, πόσοι θα ήσαν στον Παράδεισο;

Βγάλε μου τους πόρνους, βγάλε μου τους μοιχούς, βγάλε μου τους αρσενοκοίτας, βγάλε μου τους βλασφήμους, βγάλε μου τους απίστους, βγάλε μου τους αθέους, βγάλε μου, βγάλε μου, βγάλε μου και πες μου πόσοι θα είχατε. Τι εζημιώθησαν σήμερα, που το αίμα τους εχρησιμοποιήθη ως βάπτισμα και είναι 14.000 μάρτυρες του Χριστού και βλέπουν το τρισήλιο πρόσωπο της Θεότητας στην αιωνιότητα; Σε τι εζημιώθηκαν; Που έχασαν οι μανάδες τους λεβέντες που θα τρώγανε με την παντούφλα στο κεφάλι, ε, αυτό; Αλλά δεν σκεφτήκαμε ποτέ, δεν φιλοσοφήσαμε ποτέ τι είμαστε εδώ στη γη. Λένε οι μεγάλοι μας: «Κάτοικοι της γης». Είμαστε κάτοικοι της γης; Είναι αλήθεια αυτό, στην τελευταία του ανάλυση; Πώς να είσαι κάτοικος στη γη και έχει αιωνιότητα, δεν ξέρω. Τότε γιατί φεύγεις, και μάλιστα σε ανύποπτον χρόνο;

Δεν του αναγνωρίζει του Θεού τίποτα δικαιώματα. Τον πέθανε το Θεό, τον έθαψε το Θεό και ξένοιασε. Κάθε στιγμή που πεθαίνεις το Θεό, έχεις πεθάνει πρώτα εσύ. Γιατί μόνο οι νεκροί δεν πιστεύουν στο πνεύμα. Νεκροί δεν πιστεύουν, οι σωματικά νεκροί. Θα δουν κατά πρόσωπο το Θεό, αλλά θα είναι αργά τότε. Μακάριος ο άνθρωπος που θα πεθάνει πριν πεθάνει. Γιατί ο άνθρωπος που θα πεθάνει πριν πεθάνει, δεν θα πεθάνει όταν πεθάνει. Εν αντιθέσει με τους ανθρώπους που δεν θα θελήσουν τον εγωισμό τους να πεθάνει από εδώ. Θα πεθάνουν όταν πεθάνουν και τότε είναι το πιο ελεεινό, το πιο άσχημο πράγμα. Στη συνέχεια, ένα άλλο σημείο μάς λέγει το εξής: Οι δίκαιοι στον Παράδεισο έχουν γνώση των συγγενών των που ευρίσκονται στην Κόλαση;

του δώσει το γάλα του, θα του δώσει το φάρμακό του, θα του κάνει την ένεσή του. «Βγες από εδώ, σε βγάζω από εδώ». Την αναθεματίζει, την αποπαίρνει και την αφήνει από εδώ. Και τη βλέπεις και κάθεται εκεί η μάνα. Κάνει σπλάχνα ή τριγυρνάει η μάνα. Αυτό το θηρίο που σκοτώνει τον απαιτεί απάνω στ' άλλο. Κάνει όμως εκεί, στο παιδί εκείνο, κάνει αγάπη, κάνει συγκατάβαση, κάνει φιλανθρωπία. Πώς τον βλέπει τον κακόν άνθρωπο ο Θεός; Με οίκτο, με δέος, με αγάπη, με συμπάθεια. Τον βλέπει να τον σέρνει ο σατανάς και να κάνει ζημιές, νομιζόμενες ζημιές. Δεν κάνει ζημιές σε κανέναν έξω, στον εαυτό του κάνει ζημιές. Ένας κακός άνθρωπος θα σκοτώσει έναν άλλον· τον εαυτό του σκότωσε. Ο άλλος θα ήταν ανέτοιμος να σκοτωθεί. Και όσο και σπάει τον άλλον, σε γυάλινο κουβί τον έβαλε, στη θέα τον έβαλε τον άλλον. Ο άλλος πρέπει να είναι έτοιμος να πεθάνει. Πού το βρήκε ότι είναι κακός και σκοτώνει;

Δεν υπάρχει ούτε η δύναμη, αν σας πω, ούτε ο χρόνος να αναπτυχθούν αυτά και να εξαντληθούν τα θέματα. Γιατί, εφόσον είναι θέματα που άπτονται της δικαιοσύνης του Θεού και ο Θεός μάς έχει απομακρύνει, μας έχει κλείσει την πόρτα: «Μην κρίνετε, μην αμήκρισετε». Άφησε τη δικαιοσύνη σε Εκείνον. Ανθρωπίνως, γιατί εμείς κρίνουμε ανθρωπίνως, με λάθη, με αδυναμίες, με τη δικιά μας λογική. Το δικό μου βεληνεκές είναι 50 μέτρα. Ο Θεός δουλεύει την αιωνιότητα. Ο Θεός δουλεύει και τι θα γίνει πιθανώς. Μπορεί αυτός να επέτρεψε να σκοτωθεί, διότι αυτός θα έβγαζε ένα Χίτλερ. Θα πυρπολούσε ολόκληρη την ανθρωπότητα. Πού ξέρεις εσύ τι γίνεται; Ποιος δεν θέλει περίσημες στιγμές και ζητά δικαιοσύνη; Μην τον πειράξουμε, για να κάνει τη ζωή του. Ξέρω εγώ τι γίνεται;

Πώς μπορεί να λυθεί ο άνθρωπος που φαίνεται να λύσει τη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού και πώς σκέφτεται ο Θεός; Είναι δύσκολα πράγματα, θα σας λέω. Εγώ δεν μπορώ, και αυτό που καλούμαι να πω και πάλι πονώ μέσα μου, διότι μάλλον δημιουργώ το θέμα παρά το διαφωτίζω. Όμως έπρεπε κάτι να πω και γι' αυτό το είπα. Πιο κάτω υπάρχει το εξής. Είναι παρεμφερές, βλέπω, και αυτό. Ο ευρισκόμενος τόσο στην Κόλαση όσο και στον Παράδεισο, οι ευρισκόμενοι μάλλον είναι, έχουν πλήρη επίγνωση. Όχι, είναι το ίδιο αυτό, το ίδιο είναι. Προχωρώ, με συγχωρείτε. Μια άλλη ερώτηση λέγει: Γιατί η Παναγία μας επήγε στην Ελισάβετ και όχι στη μητέρα της;
