Summary
Great Lent begins after Cheesefare Sunday as a forty-day season of strict fasting, extended worship, prayer, almsgiving, confession, and preparation for the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. Christians should observe the Church’s fasts humbly and consistently in public without Pharisaic display, recognizing that faithful witness differs from ostentation. The commemoration of Saint Mary of Egypt on the Fifth Sunday of Lent presents her radical transformation as proof that sincere repentance, sacramental confession, and hope can restore even those deeply immersed in sin.

In this series of brief talks, today let us say something about this great season known as the Forty Days, or Great Lent. Let us begin with what is called Clean Week. As we know, Holy and Great Lent begins on the day after Cheesefare Sunday.
This is a season of strict fasting, extended services, and spiritual recollection in general. During this period, no weddings or other joyful celebrations are held. We should know that the fast of Great Lent is of the greatest antiquity. John Chrysostom says that the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council assembled and established forty days of fasting, prayer, hearing sacred sermons, and gatherings for worship, so that during these days we might all be thoroughly purified through prayer, almsgiving, fasting, vigils, tears, confession, and every other means, and thus, with as clear a conscience as is possible for us,
celebrate the holy days of the Passion and the Resurrection of the Lord, approaching the Holy Mysteries, which the Lord entrusted to us precisely during those days. We fast, he also says, not because of Pascha or because of the Cross, but because of our own sins. This fast is called the Forty Days because it was established in imitation of the Lord’s fast before He began His public ministry. As we know from both the Evangelist Matthew and the Evangelist Luke, that fast lasted forty days.
Great Lent is, of course, distinct from the other forty-day fast, the Nativity Fast, which is lighter. As we know from Holy Scripture, Moses and Elijah also kept forty-day fasts in the days of the Old Testament. The fast of Great Lent, as we have said, is strict. Normally, only dry food is permitted, and that once a day. Oil is permitted only on Saturdays and Sundays. It goes without saying that these rules apply to people who are in perfect health. Those who are ill are exempted from the fast, as are others who may not be bedridden but suffer from various ailments.
Many elderly people have weak constitutions and cannot keep a strict fast. Even if they desire to fast strictly, I do not think they should decide for themselves. They should consult their spiritual father and do whatever he tells them. The first day of Great Lent is commonly called Clean Monday, and the whole first week is called Clean Week, because the faithful are purified through fasting. Unfortunately, however, as you yourselves know, fasting has largely been set aside today. It has, we might say, been misunderstood. Very few among the laity and clergy
attach importance to fasting. And yet fasting has value—very great value indeed. If you like, let me tell you something Basil the Great says about fasting. He says: ‘Do you imagine, O man, that I place the origin of fasting in the time of the Law of Moses? No. Fasting is older than the Law of Moses. Fasting is as old as humanity. Fasting was instituted in Paradise. The first commandment concerning fasting was given to Adam. “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,” God said to our first parents. Those words, “You shall not eat,” established the law of fasting and self-restraint. If Eve had not eaten the fruit of that tree, we would have no need of our present fasting. Because we did not fast, we were driven out of Paradise. Let us therefore fast, so that we may enter it again. Do not imitate Eve’s disobedience. Do not once again accept the serpent as your adviser when he urges you to eat, supposedly out of concern for your body. When human bodies are excessively burdened by continual overeating, they fall more readily into illness.’
There was no wine in Paradise. Nor were there yet any animal sacrifices or any eating of meat. These things were permitted after the flood. And Moses, as we know, dared to ascend Mount Sinai only after fasting, in order to receive the tablets of the Ten Commandments. What was it, then, that made Esau unworthy and reduced him to servitude to his brother Jacob? Was it not a little food, for which he sold his birthright to his brother?
Did not the mother of the Prophet Samuel receive her son through her prayer and fasting? Fasting made that great and renowned Samson invincible. Yes, it is fasting that gives birth to prophets. Fasting makes the strong even stronger. Fasting makes lawmakers wise. Fasting sanctifies the devoted faster and makes the priest fit to offer sacrifice, for no one may dare to perform the sacred ministry without fasting. This was true not only in our own mystical and true worship, but even in the typological worship of the Old Testament—the worship prescribed by the Law of Moses. Fasting made the Prophet Elijah able and worthy to behold the great vision.
After purifying his soul through a forty-day fast, he was counted worthy in the cave at Horeb to behold the Lord, insofar as it is possible for a human being to behold God. Through fasting, the flowing Jordan was made to turn back, and thus fasting proved powerful against death. The life of the Prophet Elisha was likewise distinguished by fasting. In general, fasting guided all the Saints, enabling them to live according to the will of God. And although the Three Holy Youths were cast into the fiery furnace, because they had armed themselves with fasting, they trampled down the flames and breathed light, refreshing air amid that terrible fire. The fire did not dare to touch even a hair of their heads,
for they had been nourished by fasting. And the Prophet Daniel, who was filled with divine and spiritual longing, fasted for three weeks, eating no bread and drinking no water. Later, he even made the lions fast when the pagan king cast him into their den.
Fasting quenched the power of the fire. Fasting shut the mouths of the lions. Fasting becomes a wing and carries prayer up to heaven. Fasting brings growth and prosperity to households; it is the mother of health, the tutor of the young, and the adornment of the elderly. And he continues: ‘Fasting also becomes an occasion of gladness for us in another way.
Just as thirst makes drinking delightful, and just as hunger beforehand makes a meal especially pleasant, so fasting makes food more enjoyable. The table is more pleasing after a fast, both for the rich, who have a variety of foods, and for the poor, whose food is plain and simple. Dear one, the faster’s gaze is calm, his walk is dignified, his countenance modest and serious, unshamed by unrestrained laughter; his words are measured and his heart is pure. Do you not know that, as with opposing armies, an alliance with one side leads to the defeat of the other, so it is also with the spirit and the flesh?
Whoever burdens the flesh opposes and wages war against the spirit, while whoever takes the side of the spirit brings the flesh into subjection, for the two are at enmity with one another. Therefore, if you wish to strengthen your spirit, bridle your flesh through fasting. Will you not turn away from food that perishes? Will you not desire the table in the Kingdom of Heaven, at which you will sit if you fast in this present life? Do you not know that by your gluttony and overeating you make your belly fatter, and consequently fatten the worm that will devour you?
Who among those devoted to overeating and continual carnal pleasures has ever received any spiritual gift? Do you not fear and tremble lest your gluttony cause you to lose the blessings of the Kingdom of Heaven?’ But perhaps someone will say, ‘I, Glory to God, fast, so these words do not apply to me.
Let those who do not fast take heed of them.’ At this point, however, I think we should add something else—something that perhaps even those who fast fail to notice: fasting is not limited to what is in the cooking pot. Do not imagine, dear one, that the blessing of fasting consists only in abstaining from material food. No. There is fasting from food, but there is also fasting of the flesh and fasting from the passions. True fasting means withdrawing from every evil. For example, what benefit is there in making your cooking pot fast if you do not make your flesh fast? What benefit is there in fasting
if you are involved in quarrels, disputes, lawsuits, and strife? You do not eat meat, yet you devour your brother with insults, injustice, slander, and the like. You do not drink wine, for example, yet you do not master your passion for insulting others. You put no food into your mouth until evening, yet you spend the whole day in courtrooms, in idle conversations, or before a screen watching every kind of destructive spectacle. In this way your soul becomes drunk, not with wine, but with anger, malice, and corruption. This, then, is true fasting: fasting from food, but also from the passions. With this fasting praised by Basil the Great in mind, the Church sings: ‘Let us keep a fast acceptable and pleasing to the Lord. True fasting is estrangement from evil, restraint of the tongue, abstinence from anger,
separation from sinful desires, slander, falsehood, and perjury. Abstaining from these is the true and acceptable fast.’ In other words, let us keep a fast that God accepts, a fast that is pleasing to the Lord. What is true fasting? It is estrangement from wickedness: restraining the tongue from insults, blasphemies, and slanders; avoiding anger; withdrawing from evil desires, as well as from backbiting, falsehood, and perjury. The absence of these evils is the true fast, received with pleasure by God.
At this point, I think we should add something else that is often discussed in connection with fasting.
Some people have misunderstood the Lord’s command to avoid making a show of fasting. When they find themselves with others who do not observe the fasts, they too break the fast, even though they fast at home. ‘I ate meat,’ someone says, ‘even though it was Friday, so that I would not cause them to stumble.’
Of course, we must take great care not to cause our fellow human beings to stumble. But the kind of scandal we must avoid is not what these people describe. It is the scandal that comes from breaking the laws or commandments of the Church.
Thank you. If anyone is scandalized by our observance of God’s laws or the commandments of the Church—though in truth there is no real scandal in this—we should remain entirely unconcerned. But there certainly are people who are scandalized when we blaspheme, use foul language, lie, break the fasts, and so forth. Then our guilt is real, and not merely single but double. We are guilty of the sin we commit—as Christians who blaspheme, steal, fornicate, or fail to fast—and also of causing others to stumble.
If people are scandalized because we pray, receive Holy Communion, attend Church, fast, or go to Holy Confession, then let them be scandalized and say whatever they wish. We must understand that ostentation is one thing and confession of the faith is another. If a Christian is seated with others at a table where festal foods are served on a fast day—a Wednesday or Friday, for example, or during Great Lent—he must quietly and humbly decline them, without Pharisaic boasting or self-display. This is not ostentation. It is simply faithfulness to his principles and an acknowledgment that he is an obedient child of the Church. By taking this stand, he will also teach the others, without even speaking, that they are not doing well when they disregard the ordinances of Christ and His Church. But if he eats, supposedly to avoid scandalizing them, the exact opposite will happen. What will he do? By his actions, he will teach the others that they too may disregard the commandments of the Church. Since he...
“Since he,” the others will think, “regularly attends Church, goes to Holy Confession, and receives Holy Communion, yet he is eating, fasting must be nothing important. So we too are right not to fast.” That is what they will say. But we must not act this way, because scandal means becoming an obstacle that keeps another person from following the right path and moving forward. It is not scandal when you help someone to be enlightened and to understand that what he has been doing until now is not right. We therefore bear an immense obligation and a great responsibility before God, and one day we shall give an account if we choose to follow this course.
These, then, are a few words by way of introduction to our entrance into this season of Great Lent, concerning fasting and the circumstances we all face as Christians during these days. Another distinctive feature of Great Lent is the Akathist Hymn. Although we have given many talks on particular aspects of it in the past, and still do today, we believe that a brief reflection on and introduction to the Akathist Hymn is necessary for those who cannot listen to or retain a great deal.
On the Saturday of the Fifth Week of the Fast, the Akathist Hymn is chanted together with Matins (Orthros). Today, however, this is done only in the monasteries. In parishes it is chanted on the preceding evening, Friday evening, in the middle of Small Compline, as we know. Since we are speaking of it, we should know that the Akathist Hymn is a kontakion. In earlier times, entire hymns comparable to the canons were called kontakia. The name most likely comes from the kontos, the wooden rod around which the parchment containing the hymn was rolled.
The first troparion was called the proem or koukoulion, and those that followed were called oikoi—spelled with omicron and iota—perhaps because the whole hymn was regarded as a group of buildings dedicated to the memory of a particular Saint. Today, the word kontakion usually refers to the first troparion of such a hymn, that is, of a full kontakion. The Akathist Hymn, as most of us know, contains a proem and twenty-four oikoi.
Originally, its proem was not “To Thee, the Champion Leader,” as it is today, but another hymn, “When the Bodiless One Learned the Secret Command,” and so forth. The acrostic of the hymn is alphabetical. As we will have noticed, it follows the order of the letters of the alphabet: alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and so on. An acrostic is a phrase formed by taking, in order and without interruption, the first letter of each heirmos and troparion in a hymn. Such phrases may refer to the name of the hymn’s poet, to the subject of the feast, and so forth. Of course, not every hymn has an acrostic. The Akathist Hymn, as we know, has two refrains: “Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded” and “Alleluia.” The first appears in the proem and in the odd-numbered oikoi.
That is, in the first, third, fifth, seventh, and so forth. The second refrain, “Alleluia,” appears in the even-numbered oikoi: the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and so on.
A refrain is the final word or phrase of a hymn, which the people repeated after the chanters had sung the hymn in full. As we will have noticed, the Akathist Hymn begins with the Annunciation to the Virgin. It then recounts the events that followed: the Virgin’s visit to Elizabeth, the suspicions of Joseph, her guardian, the shepherds’ and the Magi’s worship of the Lord, Christ’s flight into Egypt, and the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple.
All these are found in the first half of the Akathist. The second half of the hymn speaks of the Lord’s Incarnation, the theosis—the divinisation—of humanity, and the dignity of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) as the one who bore God. As for the poet of the Akathist, as we were saying, no answer has yet been given that is beyond dispute. Despite all the research and discussion, the question remains unresolved.
Most regard the hymn as a work of Romanos the Melodist. Others consider it the work of Sergius, Patriarch of Constantinople. Some attribute it to George of Pisidia, and still others to other authors. In any case, it was most likely composed during the reign of Emperor Justinian, if not a little earlier. According to one tradition, the reason the hymn is called the Akathist is as follows. It is said that in the year 626, during the reign of Heraclius, Constantinople was besieged by the Persians and the Avars. Emperor Heraclius was then away in Asia Minor, fighting the Persians there. When...
When he learned that the city was under siege, he sent twelve thousand men from his army to Bonos, the commander of Constantinople, to defend the imperial capital together with its garrison. Bonos and Patriarch Sergius also armed all the citizens capable of bearing weapons, and together they resolved to resist to the very end. The Patriarch went throughout the city and along its walls, encouraging the people and the defenders. The entire city placed its hope in its protectress and Champion Leader, the Most Holy Theotokos. The siege was, as one would expect, close and severe. Nevertheless, the city withstood the besiegers’ assaults, while they persisted in the siege. Suddenly, however, a terrible whirlwind destroyed their fleet, and so the invaders were compelled...
On the night of August 7–8, they were compelled to lift the siege and withdraw without achieving anything. The imperial city was thus saved. The people, celebrating their deliverance, which they owed to the protection of the Theotokos, gathered in the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) at Blachernae. There, with Patriarch Sergius presiding, an all-night service of thanksgiving was held. Tradition says that the entire congregation stood and chanted the hymn, which from that time was therefore called the Akathist—the hymn sung while standing. The hymn itself apparently existed already and was chanted in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos, but on that night it was solemnly and festally established in our Church. The troparion “To Thee, the Champion Leader,” which...
This troparion replaced the earlier proem, “When the Bodiless One Learned the Secret Command,” which we have mentioned, and was undoubtedly composed at that time. Through it, the whole city, delivered from disaster, inscribed its victory hymn—that is, it gratefully attributed the victory to its protectress, the Theotokos. The Akathist Hymn, as we know, is chanted with a special canon beginning with the heirmos “I Shall Open My Mouth.” This is a complete canon, containing eight odes. Its acrostic reads: “O vessel of joy, to you alone it is fitting to rejoice. Joseph.” The name Joseph identifies the poet of the canon.
This was Joseph the Hymnographer, who came from Sicily and, according to tradition, flourished in the ninth century. The heirmoi are not his, but were evidently taken from the canon for the Dormition of the Theotokos. They most likely belong to John of Damascus. Each ode of the canon contains the heirmos and four troparia. Thus, the canon has eight heirmoi and thirty-two troparia in all. As you know, it is an exceedingly beautiful and festal canon and may rightly be described as a poetic masterpiece. It extols the Ever-Virgin Maiden as the living book of Christ.
It praises her as the palace of the one King, the fiery throne of the Almighty, the fathomless depth of purity, the sweet-scented lily, the dwelling place of light, the mercy-seat of the world, higher than the heavens, an incomprehensible depth, an ineffable height, a bridal chamber filled with light, the fire-bearing chariot of the Word (Logos), a living Paradise, the cause of the theosis—the divinisation—of all, the bush that burned yet was not consumed, the mystical rod, the pillar of fire, and so much more. We should also know that the Akathist Hymn is chanted in sections in our churches on the first four Fridays of Great Lent.
The canon accompanying the Akathist is chanted in full on those Fridays. Very well known and deeply loved is the troparion chanted during the service of the Akathist Hymn: “To Thee, the Champion Leader, I, thy city, delivered from calamities, offer hymns of victory and thanksgiving, O Theotokos. But as thou hast might invincible, deliver me from every danger, that I may cry to thee: Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded.” In other words: “To you, O Theotokos, the Champion Leader, I, your city, gratefully ascribe this glorious victory, because through your manifest and special help I was delivered from the terrible calamities that threatened me. And you...”
“Since your power is invincible, deliver me also from every kind of danger, that I may always cry out to you: ‘Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded.’” Also beautiful is the dismissal hymn—I do not know whether you have noticed it—which says: “When the Bodiless One learned the secret command, he hastened to Joseph’s dwelling and stood before her who knew not wedlock, saying: ‘He who bowed the heavens by His descent is contained wholly and without change in you. And seeing Him in your womb taking the form of a servant, I stand in awe and cry to you: Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded.’” That is to say, the bodiless Archangel Gabriel, having learned—in a manner of course incomprehensible to us...
Having learned God’s command, the Archangel Gabriel immediately appeared at the home of Joseph, the Virgin’s guardian, and said to the Maiden who had no experience of wedlock: “He who, through His incomprehensible and inconceivable humility in choosing to become man, bowed the heavens to descend to earth, now enters wholly into you without undergoing any change or alteration in His divine nature. And seeing Him already within your womb taking the form of a servant—that is, becoming man—I am filled with wonder and awe and cry out to you: ‘Rejoice, O Bride Unwedded.’” These things also needed to be said in some fashion, because besides those of us who...
Besides those of us who follow these subjects and know more or less about the Akathist from other talks, there are also people who, for reasons I do not know, have still not looked deeply into them and remain unaware of these great treasures offered to our souls in our Church during these days.
On the Fifth Sunday of the Fast, there is something else that needs to be discussed and carefully considered. On this day we honor the memory of our Venerable Mother Mary of Egypt, whose feast is normally celebrated on April 1. Yet, as the Church tells us, her commemoration was also appointed for this day—the Fifth Sunday of the Fast—as the end of Holy and Great Lent draws near, in order to awaken the careless and sinful to metanoia, to repentance, by setting the celebrated Saint before them as an example. Venerable Mary, together with Venerable Pelagia...
Moses the Ethiopian, Blessed Augustine, and others, are living examples, we might say, of the power of repentance. People who had sunk up to their necks in the mire of sin later attained the purity of angels. Therefore, let us not despair. No matter how deeply we may have sunk into sin, we can become not merely white, but dazzling white once again, as we were after Baptism. We need only truly repent and confess before a priest—not in the ways that some people invent, imagining...
that in this manner they can confess and receive forgiveness of their sins. Nearly all our Christians, with certain exceptions, are accustomed to approach the Holy Mystery of Confession at least during Great Lent. Yet, as we mentioned earlier, some say, “I confess before the icon. I will tell everything directly to Christ. I will tell it to my master Saint George.” Another will tell Saint John; another will say, “My Most Holy Theotokos, forgive me”; and we hear many other such things. Others supposedly confess their sins to one another.
To those who tell us, for example, “I will tell everything before the icon of the Lord, and then I will be all right,” there is one answer we could give: “Then receive Holy Communion from the icon as well.”
You go and tell your sins to the icon, setting aside the Mystery of repentance and Confession before a priest as it was given by God; yet you do not set aside the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, but go to a priest to receive Holy Communion. Since you confess before the icon, then tell everything to the icon. If, in your view, the icon has the authority to forgive sins, then surely, if it has that authority, it will also have the power...
to change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, so that you may receive Holy Communion in your own way, without having confessed. Therefore, place bread and wine before the icon and then partake of them, since you believe it possesses such power.
I believe these people must understand that icons, even when they work miracles, do not possess Holy Orders. The forgiveness of sins, the change of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, and the celebration of all the Mysteries are the work of those who possess Holy Orders...
that is, the priests of the Church. No one else can grant the forgiveness of sins.
No matter how holy a life someone may lead, he cannot do so—still less can icons; even the angels do not have authority to forgive sins. Therefore, there must be no confession before an icon, but only before one’s spiritual father. Otherwise, the sins we acknowledge remain unforgiven—or, for many, unpardoned—and on the day of judgment we will have no defense and will be condemned. Since the occasion has arisen, I believe I must also say what I have in mind. Those who confess as our Church directs, that is, before their spiritual father, should bear in mind the following points, which, unfortunately, many do not.
Confession should not take place only during Great Lent, but at least during the other fasting seasons as well: the Nativity Fast, the Dormition Fast in August, and the Apostles’ Fast. More precisely, the more frequently one confesses, the better. Second, people should not wait until the final days of a fasting season, because many then crowd in for Confession, and the spiritual father, being human, is unable to carry out his work as he should. Another thing they must remember is not to confess the sins of others, but their own. For, sadly, we hear people say, “Father, this is what my daughter-in-law did to me.”
“This is what my daughter did to me. Father, this is how my mother-in-law treated me.” Not such things, but rather, “This is what I myself did or said.” We must confess our own sins, not those of others. Another point that must be kept in mind, both now, when so many people are coming to Confession, and throughout the rest of the year, is this: we should not speak at excessive length in Confession. We should confess sins, not tell stories, as many people do. Likewise, we should speak of our sins, not of our problems or sufferings, as some of us do. If they wish...
to discuss their personal or family problems with their spiritual father and ask his opinion, or if they wish to tell him of their sufferings so that they may find relief and hear words of consolation, they may certainly do so—but at a suitable time, when others are not waiting outside the confessional and the spiritual father is not short of time or strength. This means not during Clean Week or Holy Week, for example, when crowds are waiting to confess and the spiritual father is utterly exhausted. Furthermore, they should not expect him to preach them a sermon during Confession.
They imagine that during Confession the spiritual father must preach to them about every subject they themselves have never taken any interest in learning about. But Confession is neither preaching nor catechesis. It is the Mystery of the forgiveness of sins, and nothing else. Even if the spiritual father often listens to us in silence and gives us neither teaching nor advice, but simply says the prayer of absolution after hearing our sins, the Mystery has been fully celebrated for us and our sins have been forgiven. It would certainly be desirable for the spiritual father to have the time, strength, and knowledge...
to say many things to the person confessing, but this is not always possible, especially during the days of the great feasts. Let us therefore be content even with the two or three words of counsel our spiritual father may give us during Confession, and let us not expect an entire sermon. Beloved, as we know, our Church provides sermons during the Divine Liturgy.
She also has spiritual books available everywhere, at least today. From these let us receive our spiritual nourishment—that is, devout Orthodox teaching. The Mystery of Confession was not established to provide instruction; it was established to grant the forgiveness of sins.
Another unfortunate problem is that people approach their spiritual father unprepared. We must take care not to do this. Before going to confess, we should examine ourselves, call ourselves to account, discover where we are guilty, and then go and expose that guilt in Confession. In other words, we should think about our sins beforehand and, if possible, write them down. We must not wait for questions from the spiritual father and then say, “You know, he did not ask me about that.” Did the doctor ask you about the pain in your stomach, or everything you feel when you get up or become tired? Yet you know these things and tell the doctor about them. How can you fail to know what concerns your soul? Let us confess our responsibility with humility and contrition.
Only in this way will we draw God’s mercy upon ourselves. We must also take care to cast shame far away. Shame is good before we sin, not after we have sinned. We should be ashamed when committing sin, not when disclosing our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is a satanic tactic: Satan first makes us shameless so that we will sin, and afterward makes us modest and ashamed, so that we will not confess and will remain his once again. In Confession we must speak not only of deeds, but also of words, thoughts, desires, and every kind of sinful thing.
Those who confess sins they have committed, however, should not go into scandalous details. Furthermore, those coming to Confession should never ask merely for “a prayer,” as they call it, without actually confessing. Sadly, many people say this, especially women: “Father, I have nothing to say. Read the prayer over me so that I may receive Holy Communion.” This is very wrong. We all have sins. John said, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” We all have sins, even if our life has lasted only a single day. Even if we confessed yesterday, we still have something to say today, because we sin in word, deed, or thought.
Moreover, we must understand that the prayer without Confession not only fails to grant forgiveness of sins, but also makes a mockery of the Mystery of Confession. In this matter, I dare say, grave responsibility rests both upon the laypeople who ask for a prayer without Confession and upon the priests who give it. Never ask for the prayer without Confession, my dear one. When someone asks for a prayer without confessing so that he may receive Holy Communion, he is not asking for a prayer of forgiveness, but for a prayer of congratulation. It is as though he were saying, “Father, congratulate me so that I may go and receive Holy Communion, because I am sinless and have done nothing wrong.” Let our clergy therefore enlighten the faithful...
and let us ourselves be enlightened by the books that are available, so that we may understand exactly how matters stand. From now on, let none of us approach a spiritual father without truly confessing, or having made an improper Confession. Otherwise, instead of salvation, we will incur condemnation; it will not be for the forgiveness of sins, but will add to the burden of our sins.
Something else we might add, especially fitting for these days, is what the Church teaches on the First Sunday of the Fast, known as the Sunday of Orthodoxy. You will have noticed that the first Sunday of Great Lent is called both the First Sunday of the Fast and the Sunday of Orthodoxy. We understand why it is called the First Sunday: it is the first Sunday of the Great Fast, or Great Lent. But it is called the Sunday of Orthodoxy because on that day we celebrate the restoration of the holy icons and the triumph of the Orthodox Faith over the dreadful heresy of the iconoclasts—those heretics who refused to venerate the holy icons and falsely accused such veneration of being idolatry.
Even today, many of you know people who reject the holy icons and even call us idolaters. These include various heretics, such as Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others. I would like to shed a little light on this point. We Orthodox Christians do not worship icons, Saints, Angels, or even the Theotokos (God-bearer) herself. We worship only the one God in the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We honor and glorify the Saints and the Angels, and above them all, her who is more honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim: the Ever-Virgin and Most Holy Mother of our Savior, the Lady of the Angels. But we offer worship neither to them personally nor to their icons. As we understand, honor and reverence are one thing, while worship is another. Worship belongs only to the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. At this point, someone may ask you, “Are there wonderworking icons?” Our people, as well as other Orthodox peoples, regard certain icons as wonderworking. Is this true? Are there really wonderworking icons? Or rather, is it possible for icons to be wonderworking—to work miracles? First of all, many Orthodox theologians attribute the miracles associated with certain icons not to the icons themselves,
but to the faith of the people who come before them. They say that it is faith that works miracles, and fervent prayer that works miracles, whether that prayer is offered before an icon or not. This is certainly beyond all doubt. Yet it is no reason to deny that certain icons may also possess a particular grace through which miracles are worked.
What you are hearing may seem strange to some people, but it is not strange at all; it is entirely natural. That is, for believers. To unbelievers, everything of this kind is not only strange but nonexistent. The Lord, for example, gave His Apostles the gift of working miracles. Yet we see that this gift was not confined to the Apostles themselves,
but extended even to their shadows. Holy Scripture tells us explicitly not only that many signs and wonders were worked among the people by the hands of the Apostles, but also that the Jews carried their sick on stretchers into the streets and waited for Peter to pass by, so that even his shadow might fall upon them and heal them. We read this in Acts 5:12–14. And there is something more: even handkerchiefs that had touched the Apostle Paul, when laid upon the sick or those possessed by demons, brought healing. This is mentioned in Acts 19:12. Thus, not only did the Apostles themselves possess the gift of working miracles, but even objects they used personally shared in that gift.
Why, then, should it seem strange for God to bless both these holy people and the works of their hands? And what is unnatural about such works receiving, by God’s blessing, a wonderworking grace? This, then, is a subject worthy of our attention. Since we have come this far and spoken about icons, I would also like to address an important question—one that should occupy us in another talk, although some consider it a trivial matter. It concerns the form of an icon: what style of icon should an Orthodox Christian prefer? But this is a subject we shall discuss later, God willing. I pray that the Lord may always be with you.

Στον Παράδεισον ο οίνος δεν υπήρχε. Ούτε θυσίες ζώων υπήρχαν ακόμη. Ούτε κρεοφαγία. Μετά τον κατακλυσμό επετράπησαν αυτά. Αλλά και ο Μωσής, ως γνωρίζουμε, μετά τη νηστεία ετόλμησε να ανέλθει στο όρος Σινά, για να λάβει τας πλάκας των Δέκα Εντολών. Λοιπόν, τι ήτο εκείνο που κατέστησε ανάξιον τον Ησαύ και τον έκαμε δούλον του αδελφού του, του Ιακώβ; Δεν ήτο ολίγο φαγητόν, χάριν του οποίου επώλησεν εις τον αδελφόν του τα δικαιώματά του ως πρωτοτόκου;
Όπως δηλαδή η δίψα μάς κάνει να αισθανόμεθα απόλαυσιν όταν πίνομεν, και όπως η πείνα, όταν προηγηθεί, κάμνει πολύ ευχάριστον την τράπεζαν, ούτω και η νηστεία καθιστά περισσότερον απολαυστικά τα φαγητά. Η τράπεζα είναι περισσότερον ευχάριστος μετά τη νηστεία, τόσον διά τους πλουσίους που έχουν ποικιλία φαγητών, όσον και διά τους φτωχούς που τα φαγητά των είναι λιτά και απλά. Αγαπητέ, του νηστεύοντος η οφθαλμή είναι ήρεμη, αγαπητό το βάδισμα, σεμνόν το πρόσωπο, σοβαρόν, χωρίς να εντροπιάζεται από ακολάστους γέλωτας, οι λόγοι του μετρημένοι, η καρδία του καθαρά. Αγνοείς ότι, όπως συμβαίνει με τα αντίπαλα στρατεύματα, όπου η συμμαχία κάποιου με το ένα κάνει να νικηθεί το άλλο, ούτως συμβαίνει και με το πνεύμα και τη σάρκα;
Όποιος προσθέσει βάρη στη σάρκα αντιμάχεται και καταπολεμεί το πνεύμα, και όποιος προσχωρεί στο μέρος του πνεύματος υποδουλώνει τη σάρκα, διότι αυτά είναι μεταξύ των εχθρικά. Ώστε, αν θέλεις να κάμεις ισχυρόν το πνεύμα σου, χαλιναγώγησε με νηστεία τη σάρκα σου. Δεν θα περιφρονήσεις τα φαγητά τα οποία φθείρονται; Δεν θα επιθυμήσεις την τράπεζα που είναι στη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών, εις την οποία θα καθίσεις αν νηστεύσεις εις την παρούσα ζωή; Δεν γνωρίζεις ότι με τη λαιμαργία και την πολυφαγία σου κάνεις παχυτέρα την κοιλία σου και, κατά συνέπεια, παχύτερον τον σκώληκα ο οποίος θα σε κατατρώγει;
Ας τα προσέξουν εκείνοι που δεν νηστεύουν». Στο σημείο αυτό νομίζουμε ότι πρέπει να προστεθεί και κάτι τι άλλο, που ίσως και αυτοί που νηστεύουν δεν το προσέχουν. Δηλαδή ότι η νηστεία δεν περιορίζεται μόνο στη χύτρα. Μη νομίσεις λοιπόν, αγαπητέ, ότι το αγαθόν της νηστείας περιορίζεται μόνον στην αποχή από υλικάς τροφάς. Όχι. Η νηστεία είναι βρωματική, αλλά είναι και σαρκική, είναι και παθολογική. Πραγματική νηστεία είναι το να απομακρυνθείς από παν κακόν. Φερ’ ειπείν, τι το όφελος να νηστεύεις τη χύτρα και να μην νηστεύεις τη σάρκα; Τι το όφελος να νηστεύεις;
