Summary
Christ became man through the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary to defeat the devil’s power of death and restore humanity’s adoption by God. Repentance is necessary because Adam and Eve lost Paradise not only through sin but also through refusing responsibility and remaining unrepentant. True Orthodox repentance must include humility, confession, and a concrete return to God, as illustrated by the Prodigal Son.

This evening, by the grace of the Lord, allow me to say a few words that may benefit us all in the matter of our salvation.
I would like to begin this way.
Have you ever wondered why our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world?
Why do we celebrate Christmas every year? Why the Annunciation every year? Why do we commemorate Holy Week, the Crucifixion, the Burial, the Resurrection, and the Ascension every year?
Is it simply to create feasts that give us an opportunity to see one another more often, to welcome our acquaintances or visit them, or even to receive an extra month’s salary?
What is the purpose?
Christ came into the world so that the world might go to Heaven. If Christ had not come into the world, man could not have gone to Heaven. Yet the tragedy is that Christ did come into the world, and still man does not go to Heaven. That is the issue.
If you were attentive in Church this morning, you heard the Apostle Paul tell us that Christ came so that we might receive adoption as sons. And those of you who read the texts of our Church and Holy Scripture will have found that...
He came as man to destroy what terrifies man. Do you know what terrifies man? Death. In one of his epistles, Paul writes to his own countrymen, the Hebrews, and tells them: “Since the children share in flesh and blood”—that is, they are made of flesh and blood—“He Himself likewise partook of the same.” Not in exactly the same way, because Christ became man, but He did not become man as other human beings do, through a father and a mother. For as man, He had a mother.
He had no father; and as God, He had a Father but no mother. That is why He is called the Son of Man, not the son of men. I have a father and a mother: I am the child of Athanasios and Asimo. You are the child of Dimitrios and Konstantina. But He became man in another way: through the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin. Thus, “He likewise partook of the same”; He too became man, “that through death He might destroy the one who had the power of death”—the one who terrified mankind—“that is, the devil, and deliver them.” These things are written down; they are not hidden, so that anyone might say, “Where are these things? Where have they hidden them so that we cannot know them?” It is we who have not wanted to know.
We learn things written in foreign languages and invented in other lands. Yet we have our own language and the Scriptures. Long before Christ came, God sent Alexander the Great down into that region, so that the Greek language would already be there and the Scriptures could be written in our own language—a language capable of conveying their full meaning. No other human language can convey the sublime meanings of the Scriptures as Greek can. Thus man, and the Greek above all, since the Scriptures are written in his language, can understand what is happening around him. And yet this is the one book that people do not read.
It is the one book systematically missing from the home; and if it is there, it has mothballs scattered over it. They do not even know where it is. Perhaps it is kept only because a child needs it for school. The child reads nothing beyond what is assigned at school, and the parents never touch it to see what it says—this letter from God. If someone writes to us from abroad, we read the letter again and again. And if we do not know the language, we go and pay someone to translate it so that we can learn what it is about. Here God writes to us and explains the whole matter, yet we do not want to learn. Therein lies our condemnation. In this connection, allow me to tell you something. Many people say that they cannot.
The answer is that they do not want to. Twice in the Scriptures, Christ lamented over man. You will find the first in His lament over Jerusalem, which is read here from the Gospels on the evening of Holy Tuesday. If you wish, you can also find it in your New Testament, at the end of chapter 23. There He stands at a distance, looks upon Jerusalem, and says: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I desired to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks.”
The mother hen, He says, gathers her chicks in this way. “Many times I desired and sought to gather you, but you were unwilling.” Was it that you could not? No, you were unwilling to come. And do you know why He used the example of a hen? According to naturalists, a hen speaks nine languages. When everything is peaceful, she walks about saying, “Cluck, cluck, cluck.” Then she finds a little worm and uses another call: “Cak, cak, cak, cak, cak, cak.” You see the chicks come and find the worm to eat. A hawk appears, and she uses another call; then they run and hide. “I spoke to you,” He says, “in many different voices. I spoke to you gently. I sent you prophets. I sent signs and miracles. I permitted the sword; I permitted captivity, and so forth. Yet you were unwilling.” And this is true even today.
Does man not understand what sin is? He has an inner assurance. His conscience immediately tells him, “What you are doing is not right.” Nevertheless, he does not correct himself; instead, he tries to alter the truth and silence his conscience. Does a mother who kills her children not know that even wild beasts do not behave this way? How could she not know? Yet she seeks to redefine what she is doing and silence her conscience. So it is not that she does not know; she does not want to listen. When a cat causes trouble—when it eats the housewife’s fish—you see it immediately become wary. The moment it sees its mistress coming, it runs away, because it knows it is going to be punished. The cat understands that it has done wrong. And are we human beings unable to know what is good, what is evil, and what awaits us? We simply do not want to know.
A second passage is found in John 5:39, and some interpret it incorrectly. It says: “You search the Scriptures”—you may see them all day long with the Gospel in their hands, like the Protestants, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and so forth—“because you think that in them you have eternal life.” They think, He says, that eternal life is contained within the Scriptures. But the Scriptures themselves are not eternal life.
“These are they,” He says, “that bear witness concerning Me.” I am eternal life. “Yet you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have eternal life.” You are unwilling to come—not unable, but unwilling to come to Me—so that you may have eternal life.
The Scriptures speak about Me. You must come to Me. What then? You obtained a Bible and read it? The devil knows the Scriptures better than any human being; no one knows them as well as he does, and yet he will go to Hell, because he does not act upon them, does not accept Christ, and does not do what he ought to do. That is why I say that we ourselves are unwilling to act, and precisely for this we shall be condemned. God became man, then, my beloved—learn this if you do not already know it—so that man might become god by grace. There is an exchange: God descended through the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) and came into the world, while the world ascends through Christ and goes to God. The ladder by which Christ descended into the world is the Theotokos.
The ladder by which the world ascends to God, finds its homeland again, and regains its place in Paradise is Christ. “No one comes to the Father,” Holy Scripture cries out through Christ Himself, “except through Me.” There is no other way, no path, no narrow track, no broad highway that man can take to reach God. He must pass through Christ. Christ is the key; He is the way. He knows the way; He came from there, and through Him man will go to God. And as I told you last night, He left us this inn, so that people might come here and, when they are wounded along the road by Satan’s arrows, have their wounds healed, their nature transformed, and receive new blood from Christ.
The blood of Adam must leave their veins, so that ordinary people may become new people, those made from earth may become spiritual, and human beings may become gods by grace, that they may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. For this is an inheritance of a kingdom, and a kingdom is inherited by the children of the King.
This is why Christ came into the world. He did not come to burden women with preparations—making melomakarona, frying diples, and all the rest. He did not come to stir gamblers into a frenzy, so that they might gamble away their wages, the fruit of their household’s labor, and their family’s bread. Christ did not come into the world for such things. He died so that we might live.
So that we might follow Him. This is why Christ came into the world. “And what did He tell us?” someone may ask. Christ came into the world and told us to repent. Before Him, He sent someone ahead, a man called John the Forerunner. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that four persons and one symbol stand out even before they appear in history. You may ask, “Why do you put it that way?” To show you that the work of Christ, and of all those associated with Christ who played a part in the salvation of mankind, was already within God’s plan. Their story does not begin on the day they were born. Therefore, they are not ordinary persons. The history of every great figure—whether Napoleon, the Kaiser...
or whoever else, even Stalin—begins on the day he is born, and his file is closed on the day of his death. But concerning our Lord Jesus Christ; the third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Spirit; the Most Holy Theotokos; the venerable Forerunner; and the venerable Cross, we know beforehand, from the time the world was created, that they would one day appear upon the stage of history. What was revealed about these persons before their appearance makes them radiant and worthy of attention. Before Christ came into the world, we knew when He would come, where He would come, and how He would come.
We know that He would be born in Bethlehem. We know that He would be born of a Virgin. We know that He would be born sixty-nine weeks of years—that is, 483 years—after the command was given to rebuild the Temple of Solomon following its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar. So when I know beforehand when, where, and how someone will come, is he merely a man? He is something more. And regarding the Holy Spirit, we have types that foreshadow Him. Regarding the Most Holy Theotokos, I would even dare to say that we have types, images, and prophecies from the very time when there were only two human beings in the world, together with Satan.
And I have such prophecies concerning the venerable Forerunner.
Thank you. “Behold, I send My angel before My face.” Does it not strike you that the venerable Forerunner is depicted with wings? What is he, an angel? In essence he is a man, yet he is an angel—a messenger. Is he not the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth? Why, then, does he have wings? Because he is a messenger. On account of his ministry, he is called an angel. He was sent here to tell us that Christ was coming. “I am not He. He who comes after me has come to be before me.” Although He is six months younger than I am, He is greater than I am. He is younger as man, but greater as God; and I am not worthy to loose the strap of His sandals. Then there is the venerable Cross. From the very account of Paradise, there is already mention of the venerable Wood. So when all these things appear...
upon the stage of history, what was the purpose of all this work, all this preparation? Clearly, these are serious matters. God is saying: “I have done so much so that I might point Him out to you. Pay attention to Him, because apart from Him there is no possibility of salvation, and no other road leads to Heaven. Yet you go and invent a religion of your own!” So He sent the Forerunner here to preach metanoia—repentance—to the people. And He did not keep him only here; He also sent him to Hades. There the Forerunner preached repentance, because he was the preacher of repentance both to people on earth and to those held in prison—that is, in Hades. For Christ came here in the flesh and descended in spirit to the spirits in prison for those thirty-three hours, from the afternoon of Great Friday until midnight at the Resurrection.
As many years as He spent here in this life, preaching and working miracles, so many hours He spent below, in the tomb. There too He preached, and there too He called people to repentance. And there was fulfilled what we sing in “Christ is risen,” though we do not understand it: “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.” He descended and gave life to those who received Him, those who had heard the preaching of John, who had gone before Him even into Hades, so that he might proclaim to those in Hades the glad tidings of God manifested in the flesh. Christ gave them life and established what is called the first Church. Then, at Pentecost, Peter and the others built upon the foundations that Christ had laid in Hades on Great Saturday.
“If only you were all like me.” Are we not ashamed to say such things—we who may be ensuring for ourselves an eternity in Hell? Yet we dare to tell others to take us as their example, or we put forward our husband, our wife, or our children as examples. Even if, with God’s help, a person is in some measure fit to be placed somewhere by the Lord, he still must never dare to say that he is something. He must not dare. The assertion of the ego—that it is fit to appear at the Judgment before the impartial God—is Luciferian pride, and from the outset it casts a person out of the Kingdom of Heaven. So God sent the Forerunner, and he preached repentance: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” But what does this mean?
Repent of what? Has the repentance preached by John the Forerunner never struck you? The Forerunner departed, and Christ came, entered His public ministry, and took his place. What did Christ say? Do you know what Christ said when He first began to preach? “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” He added two words. But Lord, You are God—do You not know anything else to tell us? Do you know what the priests say here every evening, when they entrust the Church to Christ? In a secret prayer they say, “Receive it in repentance and confession.” Again, repentance and confession. And what do we say in the funeral service as we depart? “Through repentance, I too have found the way.” As we were saying, the word repentance is a wondrous word.
And yet it is absent from people’s lives, as I said this morning.
So He asks for repentance. He did not ask for works; He asked for repentance. That is where everything begins, because without repentance, even our works are neither beautiful nor pure, neither sincere nor unadulterated. They will not pass; they will not withstand the Judgment of God. Where do we come from, my beloved? Where do we come from? Did the ape make us? Why does it not make us now, when we even have fertilizers and vitamins? Where do we come from? Who made us? Did we simply sprout from the ground? Why do people not sprout now? Who made man? What does Paul say? “All from one blood”—not from two bloodlines, but from one.
And Eve herself, from whom we descend, came from Adam’s blood. There is one forefather: Adam. Eve came from Adam, and from that couple came the rest of humanity. We are all descendants of Adam and Eve—of Adam, who sinned and did not repent. Why were Adam and Eve driven out of Paradise? Tell me. Some say, “Because they sinned.” Really? Was that why they were driven out? I tell you, no. They were not driven out merely because of the sin, but because they did not repent.
And we too will not be condemned to Hell because we sinned in our lifetime, but because we did not repent. We are descendants of a man who sinned, but who also did not repent; he remained unrepentant. If exile came through sin and the refusal to repent, what must characterize our return? It must involve either sinlessness or repentance, corresponding to the very condition that caused the exile. Where the first man did not repent, the second man—his descendant—is called to repent if he wishes to return. This is why God asks it of us. Do you understand, He says?
You are descendants of Adam and Eve, who sinned and would not repent. Therefore, you must repent in order to return. Yet man continues to shift the blame. The priest is at fault, the father is at fault, the government is at fault, foreign powers are at fault, the Jews are at fault, this woman is at fault. Only I am not at fault. I shift the blame, just as they did. “Am I to blame? The Eve You gave me is to blame.” “Eve, why did you do this?” “Am I to blame? The serpent is to blame.” Both of them declare themselves innocent. So God is to blame for making Eve, and God is to blame for making the serpent. Neither Adam nor Eve is to blame. The same thing happens with us today. Let each person examine himself, and he will find that he believes he is not at fault. How, then, can he return while persisting in this attitude? This is why God insists upon repentance and asks it of the descendants of those first human beings.
They sinned and did not repent, so He asks their descendants for repentance, that they may return, since sinlessness cannot be attained. This is especially true today, when even after Baptism the human inclination toward sin remains. It cannot be restrained one hundred percent. God leaves man to struggle there through repentance, striving to remain on the right path so that one day he may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This is why He asks for repentance and a return to Him. Two human beings drove us out, and two human beings bring us back in. Allow me to speak about these two persons. Have you ever considered this?
Have you considered the iconostasis? Have you ever wondered why this gate is called the Beautiful Gate?
What is the Theotokos doing there, and what is the Lord doing there? Listen, then, among the other interpretations, to one of my own. It is called the Beautiful Gate because it is the gate through which souls return to Paradise. Eve and Adam ought to have been there. Those two had closed Paradise. The obstacle is sin, which the first two human beings placed between God and mankind. Through their disobedience, those two shut us out from God. Sin came between God and man and cut man off from God. When our Christ was crucified on Golgotha, outside the encampment of Jerusalem, the first miracle took place within Jerusalem. What was that first miracle? Have you ever studied the Scriptures closely? The veil of the Temple was torn from top to bottom. In other words, the Crucifixion and Sacrifice of our Christ brought about mankind’s reconciliation with God—not God’s reconciliation with mankind, but mankind’s reconciliation with God. For according to the divine John Chrysostom, God is never hostile. God is never the enemy of mankind. It is human beings who turn their backs on God. And now communion is restored: the Holy of Holies, our Most Holy Theotokos, and our Christ.
These are the two who replaced the first two. She is the New Eve, who obeyed where the first Eve disobeyed. She said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” He is the New Adam, according to Paul in chapter 15 of First Corinthians, who became obedient unto death, even death on the Cross. And what happens now? “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” This is what we Orthodox say; this is their role and what they serve. And man, once dead and cut off from God, comes through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Mother, and enters into communion and fellowship with Christ. He receives his passage and enters into forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Do you see what is depicted below, on the doors of the sanctuary?
The Annunciation. And what does that mean? It means that the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, so that man may once again become a son of God. This is no chance event; it is good tidings. The Greek word for Annunciation is a compound word meaning “good tidings.” The good news given to mankind is that the Son of God will become the Son of the Virgin.
This, then, is where people will enter. Those first two closed Paradise, and these two opened Paradise. You have seen where the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted behind the Holy Altar, in the apse, as the Platytera. She is the Gate of Heaven who opened Paradise again: she gave birth to Him who opened Paradise, and through Him people pass once more into Paradise. This is why man’s reconciliation with God will take place here, through the intercessions of the Theotokos. The Most Holy Theotokos took the place of Eve, and our Lord took the place of Adam. If a person is not reconciled with Christ in this world, and does not come here to commune with Him,
he will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. He cannot go in from that side, nor from this side. Have you seen the two archangels standing on either side? Why are they there? To keep the laity from entering the sanctuary? No. Symbolically, they are guarding the gate. Not from here, not from there—you must pass through that gate. Yet a woman goes to take hot water from over there and bring it home, thinking it will save her. No. She must come here and humble herself. She must come here. There is no other way for man to return to Paradise. And blessed is the person who makes use of this Beautiful Gate, for he will be doing something beautiful for himself and for his soul. We have never wanted to study. Today knowledge has increased. God has permitted so many patristic books to be published.
For four hundred years under Turkish rule, we were buried beneath this oppression. Our Orthodoxy had been covered over with layers of debris and had nearly disappeared; and lately, efforts are once again being made to bury us. Yet there are people, coming from the monasteries and even from the cities today, who rise to the surface, cast off the mud that some are throwing upon us, and bring authentic Orthodoxy back into the light. For a person is saved with the help of three things: the Orthodox pulpit, Byzantine hymnography, and Byzantine iconography. When, with God’s help, you adorn this whole church with sacred images, you will see above, around Christ our Pantocrator, what I have told you this evening about the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Forerunner. In the first circle after Christ the Pantocrator, among the angels, you will see the Most Holy Theotokos and the Honorable Forerunner. And you will wonder, ‘What is the Most Holy Theotokos doing up there among the angels?’ And yet God had her in His mind from the beginning. And what is the Honorable Forerunner doing there? God had him in mind as well, and even caused it to be written that one day he would come: ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness,’ and also the saying in Malachi that he is the one whom God would send before His face. Then you will see how this threefold path guides a person onto the right road. Much blood has been shed to preserve these three paths, this threefold way, which they are now trying to erase and obliterate by various means, so that man may remain in darkness,
thinking that he can reach Heaven in his own way. Pray, therefore, that the right faith, together with all that belongs to it, may be preserved, so that we may have the true road—the road that will one day bring us to the destination appointed for every human being. This, then, is why repentance is required: because these words are addressed to a person descended from someone who was both sinful and unrepentant. Now, what is repentance? Some say that they repent, and others also say that they repent. The Protestant speaks of repentance, and the Orthodox Christian speaks of repentance. But they do not mean the same thing. Orthodox repentance is not the same as Protestant repentance. The Mystery is not repentance alone.
It is repentance and confession. Read the account of the Prodigal Son. Did the Prodigal repent and simply remain where he was? Did he say, ‘I repent of what I have done,’ and then return to Heaven? No. He returned. He went back, humbled himself, said, ‘I am at fault,’ asked no longer to be treated as his father’s son, and accepted everything else that followed. They took his old garments off him, clothed him in new ones, and then said, ‘Bring the fatted calf.’ There was a whole process, a sacred rite, for this prodigal—and in a certain sense, we too are prodigals. Today, unfortunately, the Mystery has been divided. We have people who have repented but have never confessed, and people who have confessed but have never repented.
Few have both repented and confessed. Someone says, ‘I repented and resolved not to do that again.’ Did you confess it? ‘No, I did not confess it.’ But you had already incurred the debt. Even if you pay cash from now on, who will pay what you previously charged? Who will settle your unpaid accounts? They are written down. As I said the day before yesterday, they are written in the conscience, on Satan’s record, and on the angel’s record. No work can erase them, however great its quality or quantity. Even if all the good works from righteous Abel to the last righteous person at the end of the ages were entered into one person’s record, they would not erase even one of his sins. Sins are forgiven
through repentance and confession. After that, his good works receive their reward and their proper value. There is no other way. This is shown clearly in the account of the Prodigal Son. The Prodigal Son repented when he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, while I perish with hunger.’
What he said there—‘I will return; this is what I must do; I must put things right’—was repentance. But when he took the next step, ‘He arose and went to his father,’ then his repentance was formally declared. Repentance is a decision, and no decision takes effect until it has been communicated. I do not know whether any of you has ever won a court case.
Suppose the judgment awarded you some benefit, and afterward you went to collect it from the treasury because you had won the case, only to hear, ‘No decision has been communicated to us.’ You read in the newspapers that your pension had been increased, but no official notice had reached the treasury. ‘No decision has been communicated to us.’ ‘But the decision was issued; we read it,’ you say. ‘It has not been communicated to us.’ That is how it is. It is good for me to repent and admit that what I did was wrong. But if I do not go and communicate my repentance to the person who has been authorized to receive it, then I have done nothing. Many people, either without any repentance or with repentance but without confession, come to receive Holy Communion. But Christ did not teach this.
Do you admit, O man, that you are a prodigal son? Then you must follow the path of the Prodigal Son. Did Christ bring the Prodigal to the banquet still wearing the clothes of the pigsty, and then call for the calf? No. He removed the first, filthy garment, clothed him in a new garment, and only then did he enter. Would you like to know what the Prodigal’s new garment is? Let me remind you: it is the garment the Church gave you at Baptism. A person is born naked from his mother and darkened by sin. In popular religious language, an unbaptized boy is called a ‘little dragon,’ and an unbaptized girl a ‘little she-dragon.’ And while the child remains unbaptized, it is spoken of as ‘unburied’—for ‘unburied’ means unbaptized. Baptism is not merely a social bond between families.
It is a Mystery. A person who is spiritually dead is buried, and a new human being rises. At the moment the old person is buried, a new person comes into being. At that point the priests read prayers over white garments, as you will see, and say, ‘Grant me a garment of light, O You who clothe Yourself with light as with a garment.’ The newly illumined and baptized person is clothed in it. What is this garment? It is the garment of the soul that Adam lost through his disobedience. And now this person, as a descendant of Adam, comes in faith to Christ: ‘As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.’ The child is clothed entirely in white, and his soul, which had been dark and a dwelling place of Satan, now becomes white and a dwelling place of Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Do not be shocked when I say ‘a dwelling place of Satan.’ Some ignorant mothers call an unbaptized child a ‘little angel.’ No, not a little angel, since the child is unbaptized. And even after the child is baptized, you should not call it a little angel, because by doing so you diminish the child. What is an angel compared with a human being? How many angels serve man! Do you not know that the angels minister to us? Was Christ crucified for an angel? Does an angel receive His Body and Blood? Man is far higher than an angel. A priest is far higher than an angel. To call him merely an angel is a kind of blasphemy; it lowers his dignity. At that moment, then, the Church clothes the baptized person in white. Have you paid attention to what our Church says? We give thanks for this spiritual garment that Adam lost. Come here on the eve of Cheesefare Sunday, on Saturday evening, and you will hear it.
Adam laments and says, ‘Wretched as I am, I have been stripped of the garment woven by God.’ Do you see this grace? ‘I have been stripped of the garment woven by God.’ What did he lose? Was he physically naked? He lost grace. Then he went and hid himself and made what we would now call his own bikini out of fig leaves, to conceal his nakedness—he who once feared nothing. But from the moment he lost grace, everything changed. Therefore, when a person comes forth from Baptism in this white garment, clothed in the grace of God, he is obliged to preserve it. But how long does he preserve it? When he reaches twelve, thirteen, or fifteen years of age, when selfish pride begins within and without, when the flesh starts demanding its own way, and the world and self-interest make their claims, he turns against Christ, although earlier
his godparent had said on his behalf, ‘I renounce Satan and unite myself to Christ.’ Now you turn to Christ and say, ‘I renounce You, Christ.’ ‘Why, My child, do you renounce Me?’ ‘I am going with the devil.’ ‘You are going with the devil? Why? Yesterday you said, “I renounce you, Satan, and unite myself to You, Christ.” I gave you this white garment for your soul and enrolled you in the Book of Life. How can you overturn all this today? How can you now say, “I renounce You, Christ,” and “I unite myself to you, Satan”?’ ‘But You ask me to preserve virginity. I will go with the devil, who says, “Down with virginity!” You ask me to welcome children, Christ. I will go with the devil, who does not want children. You ask me to fast. I will go with the devil, who wants no fasting. You tell me to live with the Cross in my hand. I will go with the devil, who wants nothing of the Cross.’ Do not deceive yourself. Christ says, ‘Take off My garment and leave it here.’
‘Give Me back this garment; bring My grace back here, and then go. Put on as many suits as you like, O man. Have as many dresses made as you wish, modern or otherwise, fashionable or unfashionable, and present yourself to the world however you please. In the eyes of God, you are naked and exposed.’ But whenever you return in metanoia, in repentance, like the Prodigal Son, then the angel will be commanded, ‘Bring him the first robe, which we have kept for this prodigal.’ That is how matters stand. Many of us live in society, conduct our affairs and correspondence, are addressed as ladies and gentlemen, and enjoy a certain respect; yet we are naked and exposed in the eyes of God because we remain unrepentant. We are naked before God.
Our garment is waiting for us there, in God’s spiritual wardrobe. It waits for the person to repent, so that this garment may be given back to him and he may be properly presented before God.
Read Holy Scripture and find the account of the great man who arranged a wedding for his son. He entered to see the guests and came to a table where there was a man without a wedding garment. ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ That man had entered wearing his own fine suit. ‘What about me?’ No, that will not pass. Unless Christ clothes you, unless you put on the garment of Christ, are washed in the blood of Christ, and wear the garment Christ gives, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This garment is given through repentance and confession. ‘Bring him, then, the first robe.’ Take off the old garment, and now let him enter the feast of the fatted calf. This is the way. The clergy carry out this work expressed in the commands ‘bring it to him,’ ‘do this for him,’ and so forth. It is carried out by the innkeeper I told you about last night, for those of you who were present. He is the one who does it.
He was given the authority to bind and to loose. When Christ rose from the dead, that same evening He stood in their midst behind closed doors, while Thomas was absent. After twice greeting them with the words, ‘Peace be with you,’ He stood and said to them, ‘As the Father has sent Me, I also send you. Receive the Holy Spirit.’ What were they to do with this gift? ‘If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ Lord, did You have nothing else to bring us from Hades? Are You speaking to us about sins again? But this is the central issue. My sacrifice on the Cross, my descent into Hades, my Resurrection, my Ascension, and my Second Coming will always have one concern—
sin. Sin crucified Me. Ever since I read the words God spoke to Eve, ‘What is this you have done?’—there in Eden, to wretched Eve—it was as though He were saying, if you will permit me to put it this way, ‘Criminal, what have you done? Do you understand what this hand of yours has done? It is crucifying God. At this very moment, it is crucifying God. Understand what you have done by stretching out your hand.’ Man must understand this. The fleshly, corrupted eyes of the twentieth century cannot see what those words meant. But the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross reveals it. What did God mean by those words? He meant to guard us, so that we might not find ourselves facing His justice.
‘What is this you have done, you criminal? Understand what you have done.’ We commemorate Great and Holy Friday. Where does Great and Holy Friday begin? Its root is in Eden. In Eden. The Holy Communion you receive on Great and Holy Friday has its root in Eden. Where is the Annunciation? In Eden. It was planted there. Where is the Nativity of Christ? Where had God spoken of it? In Eden. There, when He had before Him two human beings and the devil, all these things were already spoken of. Yet they remain stubbornly buried by that cunning devil. Pray and beseech God to raise up people who will bring to light the work He has done. For woe to us if this unique and unrepeatable work of God for man remains buried. Man does not know what he is; he imagines that he came into the world merely to eat eggplants, breathe oxygen, and enjoy God’s sunshine.
Is God small in your eyes, O man? This is why a confessor is necessary, and why this authority was given to him. The Apostles who received this command handed it on to others, and they in turn handed it on to others through the laying on of hands, and it remains to this day. That is why some spiritual fathers, although they may guide you spiritually, do not hear your confession: they have not received the commission, the authority to bind and loose. Certain priests are appointed and sent by our bishops with letters of authorization to hear confessions on the bishops’ behalf. For the authority to bind and loose belonged to the twelve Apostles, not to the Seventy. The bishop grants this authority. And so a priest may say, “My child, I am not a confessor; go to a confessor.”
There are people today who have an immortal soul, yet do not know that they have an immortal soul, and they have no physician for it. When Christmas comes around, they think about what they will wear, what they will prepare, what furniture they will have, what sweets they will serve, who will visit them, or where they will go. But they make no preparation at all for their immortal soul. Many will come to receive Holy Communion without metanoia and Holy Confession, and they will add yet another cancer to their soul—one more mortal sin upon the other mortal sins already there. They make excuses, saying that the priests are sinners. Such things are absurd; we have heard that refrain a thousand times.
“God does not ordain everyone,” says the divine John Chrysostom, “but He works through everyone.” What do you want—an angel to be sent so that you can confess to him? The angel would cut off your head when he heard your carnal sins and your misconduct. He cannot understand such things. So God has entrusted you to this flesh-and-blood man, who also has his faults and weaknesses, so that he may stand beside you and help you. “Men who dwell upon the earth and make their home upon it,” that golden tongue also says, “have been entrusted with the administration of things in Heaven.” Yes, that humble, sinful priest has received, through Apostolic Succession, an authority given by Christ: the authority to bind on earth things that pertain to Heaven. The Angels and Archangels do not possess this authority. Ask an angel to forgive you; he has no authority to do so. But the humble priest does, even if he is sinful, even if his cassock is greasy, even if his stole is worn out, even if he can hardly read from the service book. Another Examiner stands unseen behind him and knows. The priest’s sins are his own. All these objections are devices of Satan, by which he somehow keeps us trapped.
Others are ashamed to speak of their sins. Be ashamed when you sin, but do not be ashamed when the time comes to vomit out the poison Satan has put within you. Once, an elder was hearing confessions when he saw a tall figure moving among some people outside who were waiting to confess. “What do you want there?” he asked him. No one else could see anyone at all. “In the name of Jesus Christ, what are you, and what do you want there?” Suddenly the tall figure appeared. “I am Satan,” he said. Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos! Satan here? Where else would he go—to the vineyards? He had already put his vineyards in order. “What do you want here, and what are you doing?” “I came here,” he said, “to give them something.” “What are you going to give them?” “Something I had taken from them.” “What had you taken?” “I had taken away their shame.” “And what is happening now?” “I have come to give it back to them.” “Why did you take it away then?” “So that they would sin.” “And why have you brought it back?” “So that they will be ashamed to tell you their sins and will remain mine once again.” This is the truth, and this is how things remain.
On this occasion, during these holy feast days—a season that is offered to us and reminds us all why Christ came into the world—let none of us be absent from this invitation. Let each of us receive the ticket to the Kingdom of Heaven, which is offered freely; but first let us be cleansed through metanoia, be reconciled in love with our fellow human beings, and then approach here, at the Beautiful Gate, to receive Holy Communion for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. This I wish for one another and for all. Amen.

Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ γιατί ο Κύριος ημών Ιησούς Χριστός ήλθε εις τον κόσμο;
Γιατί κατ’ έτος εορτές Χριστουγέννων; Γιατί κατ’ έτος εορτή Ευαγγελισμού; Γιατί κατ’ έτος Εβδομάς Παθών, Σταυρώσεως, Ταφής, Αναστάσεως, Αναλήψεως;
Απλώς για να δημιουργούνται εορτές που θα μας δίνουν μια ευκαιρία να βλεπόμαστε καλύτερα μεταξύ μας, να περιμένουμε τους γνωστούς μας ή να πηγαίνουμε στους γνωστούς μας ή ακόμη για να έχουμε και κάποιο 13ο μισθό;
Ποιος είναι ο σκοπός;
«Μακάρι να ήσασταν και εσείς σαν και εμένα». Μα δεν ντρεπόμαστε να λέμε τέτοια λόγια, άνθρωποι εξασφαλισμένοι για την αιωνιότητα στην κόλαση, και τολμούμε να πούμε ότι να μας πάρουν για παράδειγμα οι άλλοι ή προβάλλουμε τον άντρα μας ή προβάλλουμε τη γυναίκα μας ή προβάλλουμε τα παιδιά μας. Ο άνθρωπος και να είναι, με τη βοήθεια του Θεού, κάπως κατάλληλος που να μπορεί να τον τοποθετήσει ο Κύριος κάπου, και πάλι δεν πρέπει να έχει την τόλμη να πει ποτέ ότι είναι κάτι, δεν πρέπει να έχει την τόλμη. Το εγώ, ότι είναι εις θέση να παρουσιαστεί στην κρίση μπροστά στο Θεό τον αδέκαστο, αυτό είναι εωσφορικό και τον αποβάλλει εκ προοιμίου, τον άνθρωπο, από τη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών. Έστειλε λοιπόν τον Πρόδρομο και κήρυξε μετάνοια. «Μετανοείτε», λέει, «ήγγικε η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών». Τι είναι αυτό πάλι;
Και εμείς δεν θα κολαστούμε γιατί αμαρτήσαμε στη ζωή μας, αλλά γιατί δεν μετανοήσαμε θα κολαστούμε. Είμεθα απόγονοι ενός ανθρώπου που ημάρτησε αφενός, αλλά και δεν μετενόησε, έμεινε αμετανόητος. Όταν λοιπόν γίνεται έξωσις λόγω αμαρτίας και αμετανοησίας, η επάνοδος τι πρέπει να έχει χαρακτηριστικά; Ή να έχει αναμαρτησία ή να έχει μετάνοια, διά αυτής της ταυτοπαθείας. Εκεί που ο πρώτος άνθρωπος δεν μετενόησε, καλείται ο δεύτερος άνθρωπος, εάν θέλει ο απόγονός του να γυρίσει πίσω, να μετανοήσει αυτός. Γι’ αυτό ζητάει. Ξέρετε, λέει, κύριοι;
Που ημάρτησαν και δεν μετενόησαν, μετάνοια ζητάει για να επιστρέψουν, εφόσον αναμαρτησία δεν μπορεί να επιτευχθεί. Και μάλιστα σήμερα που και παρά το βάπτισμα παραμένει ακόμη η κλίσις του ανθρώπου προς την αμαρτία. Δεν μπορεί να αναχαιτιστεί 100%. Και τον αφήνει να παλεύει εκεί διά της μετάνοιας και να αγωνίζεται να κρατηθεί στο σωστό δρόμο για να βρεθεί στη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών μια μέρα. Αυτός είναι ο λόγος που ζητάει μετάνοια και επιστροφή. Δύο άνθρωποι μας έβγαλαν και δύο άνθρωποι μας βάζουν. Να μου επιτρέψετε να σας πω επάνω στα δύο πρόσωπα αυτά. Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ;
Το τέμπλο; Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ γιατί αυτή η πύλη λέγεται Ωραία Πύλη;
Αυτοί οι οποίοι αντεκατέστησαν τους δύο πρώτους. Αυτή είναι η νέα Εύα, που υπήκουσε εκεί που η πρώτη παρήκουσε. Αυτή είπε: «Ιδού η δούλη Κυρίου, γένοιτό μοι κατά το ρήμα σου». Αυτός είναι ο νέος Αδάμ, κατά τον Παύλον, στο 15ο Πρώτης προς Κορινθίους, ο οποίος έγινε υπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, θανάτου δε Σταυρού. Και τι έγινε τώρα; «Ταις πρεσβείαις της Θεοτόκου, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς». Αυτά λέμε εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι και αυτόν τον ρόλο έχουν και αυτό εξυπηρετούν. Και έρχεται ο ποτέ νεκρός, ο αποκεκομμένος άνθρωπος, διά των πρεσβειών της Παναγίας Μητρός, και κοινωνεί, επικοινωνεί με τον Χριστό και λαμβάνει το εισιτήριον και εισέρχεται εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν αιώνιον. Βλέπετε τι έχει εκεί κάτω στα βημόθυρα;
