Summary
Christmas benefits Christians only when they use the feast to advance toward spiritual maturity and understand why Christ entered the world. Confession must be sincere and complete, since deliberately concealing a grave sin through shame undermines the whole act of repentance. External decorations, possessions, parties, and customs cannot replace inner freedom, virtue, and the cleansing from sin that only Christ provides.

You know, Christmas is only a few days away.
I would like us to speak about something that might, in some way, prepare us to benefit from Christmas rather than suffer spiritual loss. It may seem strange to hear me say that a person can suffer loss through a feast—and especially through such a unique feast. Yet when the days of a person’s life pass without being used for spiritual growth, that person suffers loss. Christianity is not something static. It means nothing to say, “We are standing firm,” unless we are also moving forward.
Merely standing still is nothing. A person must move forward and advance, because the purpose of our time here is to become complete, to be perfected. This is why more days are given to us, why more time is added, and why God’s forbearance waits for us. It is no accident, then, that we now stand on the threshold of Christmas and that, with the Lord’s help, we shall once again celebrate Christmas and the other feasts. This is something important for us. But will we benefit from it? That is the question. And we certainly shall benefit if we understand...
...the meaning and purpose of Christmas. Why do we commemorate Christmas? Christ was born once. Now we simply keep the remembrance of His birth. Once He was crucified, once He was buried, and once He rose. What we now await from Christ is His Second Coming and our judgment. But unless a person grasps the meaning of this yearly repetition and sets out to discover why Christ is born—why Christ was born—he will not benefit. Christ, though perhaps you do not know it, was born to save His people from their sins. This is what the angel said to reassure Joseph when he considered putting Mary away secretly, because he thought that she had been unfaithful—“suspecting a secret union,” as the author of the Akathist so beautifully says. You remember that an angel then intervened and reassured him: “Behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save...’”
“...His people from their sins.” This is the one and only purpose for which God came into the world and became man. But for Him to save His people, the people themselves must desire it and must offer up their sins. The sea can extinguish burning coals, but if the coals are not cast into the sea, the sea will not go looking for them. That is the point. There is a most beautiful prokeimenon at Vespers which says, “Your mercy shall pursue me all the days of my life.” Why does David say this? “I shall sin like a foolish and senseless man, but You, I beg You, run after me and perhaps You will catch me.” There is also another beautiful scene in which our Christ leaves the ninety-nine sheep and goes down into the ravines to find the one that was lost. When He finds it, He places it upon His shoulders, returns, and calls upon the others to rejoice with Him because He has found the lost sheep. But as you know, for a sheep to be found, the sheep must also desire it. If it leaves the fold, wanders away, grazes somewhere in a meadow, and then curls up somewhere, the shepherd may call and wear himself out searching for it, but he will not find it. And the wolf will certainly devour it. But if the sheep also desires...
...to return to the fold and begins to bleat, then the shepherd will find it. By bleating, the sheep helps the shepherd. But do we, who are called Christians, truly want to return to the fold? Do we love Christianity? Do we want to be under the care of the Shepherd called Jesus? That is the question. Most of us do not want Him. We want Him as a feast and for the material benefits He brings, because the feast may make it easier for us to receive an extra payment, enjoy a celebration, have a good time, and so on. But we want nothing more to do with Him; that is as far as we will go. Even unbelievers will behave in the same way during these days. Those fine atheists who do not believe in Christ are not going to come forward and say, “I will not accept the money.”
If there is some benefit for me because of the feast, I shall take it. This is why Christ says, “Out of your own words I will judge you, you wicked servant.” I will judge you by your life as a whole. And you know how such people conduct themselves. But God is not mocked. “God is not mocked.” We may deceive ourselves, but He cannot be deceived. Therefore, if He is to save His people from their sins, the people themselves must desire it. When the people do not desire it, God cannot force them. And sadly, there are many who do not desire it. They will exploit Christ materially, carnally, in a worldly way, or however else one might describe it, but they will not benefit. For the one purpose for which Christ came into the world and shed His blood concerns the sins...
...of the world. Therefore, when a person does not surrender his sins, the feast is in vain for him. The people who need to hear the true state of the matter are not here before me; perhaps they will hear it afterward through these recorded words. Yet I would like to address those who are listening to me, many of whom are not ready for this feast. They are not ready because they take care to arrange everything else as well, correctly, perfectly, carefully, and reasonably as possible—everything except the matter of their sins. Many people will attend Church and, outwardly, celebrate in the most Christian manner.
Yet they will fail in the essential matter of Christmas because, at the deepest level, they have not put the matter of their sins in order. They will receive nothing. God cannot be compelled. Christ knows every detail. He looks not merely at what we do, but at how we do it. Many people offer excuses for not dealing with their sins, and they usually dwell upon possible misconduct among the clergy. Many remain far away and do not go to confession, supposedly because of the clergy. When I went to Thessaloniki to speak the other day, I had the opportunity to meet many people who are still outside the Church. They liked everything they heard, but they remained guarded because they think that...
...everything depends upon the holiness of the clergy. I would like to believe that many of the accusations made against the clergy are slanderous, although the clergy may also have their faults. But we do not depend upon the holiness of the clergy; what matters is how we make use of the ministry entrusted to them. Do you suppose a priest is Judas? The Gospel does not say that Judas performed no miracles.
Did God take grace away from him? Judas also performed miracles, just as the other Apostles did. Yet some people become quite absurd when the question of Holy Communion and the trustworthiness of the clergy arises. They say, “To whom am I supposed to confess? To the man who will give me Holy Communion? How can he be worthy, capable, and filled with grace?”
He consecrates the Holy Eucharist, changing the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood, so that you and I may receive Holy Communion—and yet we would approach without confession? Does he not also have the power and grace to forgive your sins? If he is deprived of grace, then he is also deprived of grace with regard to the Holy Eucharist. Consequently, many others naively dare to say that they confess before the icons. Then receive Holy Communion from that icon as well! Why go any farther? You have the icon to change the bread into the Body and the wine into the Blood so that you can receive Holy Communion. Do not wear out your shoes or catch cold going to Church. These things are inconsistent, especially for people of the twentieth century, who consider themselves so enlightened and who have, in truth, advanced greatly in intellectual knowledge. And yet there is a large class of people, I would venture to say, who...
...prepare for Christmas while remaining in their sins. Christ came into the world to take away sins—He is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” who bears and wipes away the sin of the world—and yet they remain in sin and use the possible faults of the clergy as a shield. No, this is not right. If there are people among us who remain far from the Church for the reasons I have mentioned, I would urge them to overcome this obstacle. No sin pays for itself, is erased by itself, disappears, or simply decays away. No sin at all—except a sin that has been repented of and confessed. Nor does our Christ forgive sins invisibly...
...apart from the clergy. Neither the Theotokos, nor the Saints, nor the angels—no one does so. The priest, the clergy, forgives sins on Christ’s behalf. Christ has given them this authority, whether we like it, I dare say, or not. He has given this authority to them. And so during these days, as you yourselves will see in the churches, many strangers will appear. They will enter through every door, perhaps holding a newspaper in one hand and a bread ring in the other, take their place in line to receive Holy Communion, and then leave. These are anonymous people with no relationship to the Church. They do not know where to enter, where to leave, where to stand, or when to come, yet they will arrive without any preparation—not to receive Holy Communion, but to devour Jesus. If Jesus comes...
Jesus waits for people to bring the matter to completion and do what is right, exactly as He established it from the beginning in His Church. This, I repeat, is something to which we must pay close attention. There is also another class of people: those who confess, but not completely. They have not brought everything out or said everything. They have left things behind. They have said what they were able to say...
...but they have not said what Satan would not let them say. Such people should know that they remain unconfessed, and even what they did confess has not been accepted.
There is a story—I do not remember it perfectly—in the accounts of Saint Kosmas the Aetolian. Once, an ascetic was hearing a woman’s confession. While he was hearing her confession, he told his disciple to move away and neither look nor listen in the direction where the elder was hearing the confession. Yet at one point, perhaps out of curiosity, the young disciple turned and looked. He saw something strange and kept his eyes fixed upon it for a long time. The elder noticed this and remembered it. When the woman had left, he called the disciple over and rebuked him: “What did I tell you, and what did you do?”
“What sort of curiosity was that?” The disciple replied, “Geronta, I was looking at something that would have astonished you too, had you seen it.” “What were you looking at?” “As the woman spoke, I saw various little snakes coming out of her mouth.” “Very well,” said the elder. “They were her sins; it was the evil one coming out as she confessed.” “Yes,” he replied, “but there was also another snake. Three times it hung from her mouth and tried to come out, but in the end it did not. It went back inside. And when it went back in, all the little snakes that had come out returned with it and went back inside as well.” This is the secret.
The elder understood that the woman had indeed confessed all the smaller sins, but that she had committed some grave sin. Three times she tried to say it, but shame overcame her. She did not confess it and kept it within herself; and so all the other sins returned as well, because her confession was not accepted. “Run,” he told the disciple. “Hurry and catch up with her; stop her and bring her back here.” The disciple went down to the public road and found her lying dead by the roadside. He ran back to the elder and told him what had happened. The elder was terrified. “My God,” he said, “were her sins so many that I too have her death upon my conscience?” He feared that perhaps he had not helped her enough to bring out everything she was carrying within her. At once he knelt, prayed, and asked God to reveal to him what had become of her soul. Before he had finished his prayer, a black bear began climbing toward him and came to stand before him.
It said to him, “I am the woman who confessed a short while ago. When I went down the road, I died and went to Hell, because I had committed a grave sin when I was still young, and I was ashamed to confess it. You are not to blame; be at peace.” This revelation and this account have much to say to many of us. We may confess a certain amount—perhaps even ninety-nine percent—but if the hundredth part, the remaining one percent, is withheld, the whole confession is nullified. That is why I tell you that there are many among us who are called Christians...
There are those among us who have not completed our confession, for reasons I cannot understand. As I was telling you one evening, there was the case of a woman who said, “I just cannot tell that to my spiritual father. I confess everything else, but I cannot tell him that.” But then what is to be done? Since that one thing renders the rest of the confession ineffective—and since the confession depends on it in order to bear fruit—you must strive to overcome this obstacle. Of course, shame stands in the way. But we ought to feel shame before we sin, not after the sin. Shame belongs before the sin. Satan is a craftsman: he brings shame upon us when it no longer belongs there. In confession, if possible, we must begin with the grave sins, not the small ones. We should go straight to the grave sins and let the smaller matters and details follow. Instead, we begin with the small things, then stumble when we reach the grave ones, and leave them for a more convenient time.
Satan also commonly suggests that we should do some good deed instead, perhaps trying to put right what has gone wrong. Even certain spiritual people sometimes tell us, when we have been far from Christ for years, “You should baptize a child; that is a good thing.” But I am still living like an Antichrist—what business have I professing the faith and baptizing someone? I myself am no good, poor wretch that I am; whom am I going to baptize? Or they tell us to serve as a sponsor at a wedding, make offerings, and so forth. What is needed is practical repentance. We write it down on paper: “I did this, and I ask for God’s mercy.” These sins must be removed from the way. Then we unbind the hands of grace, the grace of God acts upon us, and our life is changed.
But we deal with these matters differently, and we do not fear that something sudden may happen, because, as you know, today...
We live in an age when there is no assurance about how death will come. In the past, we expected to fall ill, to suffer, to catch pneumonia or something of the sort, and thus sense that we were dying. Then the priest would come—you would see the Holy Gifts and the processional fans being carried in—and they would go to give the dying person Holy Communion. The priest would hear our confession, give us Holy Communion, and then we would die.
God may grant us that opportunity. But let us suppose that we say, “We will celebrate another Christmas.” What happens if we do not? Who can guarantee that we will live to see 1982? Is Christ obliged to keep putting up with us? We must make good use of the time He gives us now. So, if there are people among us who still have matters left unresolved, let us go and clear them away. There can be no bargaining with God. If they have caused losses that require material restitution, they must see to it that these matters are put right. Nothing can buy God off. But what if you have no means to repay it? Go to your spiritual father and tell him: “This is my situation. I did this. I wronged someone, I stole, I lied, I swore falsely; I did these things. What can I do now? I cannot make restitution.”
“I acknowledge what I have done; at the very least, let me take spiritual responsibility for it.” He may tell you, “Go, save what you can, and then repay it.” But you must settle the matter through the instrument Christ has left us, the spiritual father. Do not decide it by yourself. The same applies to fasting, for example. Many people are in poor health and, ordinarily, should not fast.
They must tell their spiritual father and not make the decision by themselves, because otherwise they transgress the commandment. The spiritual father may say, “May it be blessed,” even if you must eat meat on Great and Holy Friday. Then it is blessed. No one is restraining you, making things difficult for you, or accusing you; the food is readily available. Therefore, we must put things in order with the Church, because the Church receives us when we enter this life and receives us again when we depart.
And the Church undertakes our healing—our complete restoration to health. These matters, then, must be put in order. Yet many people have not arranged them properly within themselves and have no concern to do so. And those of us who confess and think we have already finished with the past and now have only our present sins to deal with should ask Christ to remind us where we still stumble, because there are many things we have forgotten. We have forgotten them, but they will still stand before us. You will see what happens when you pray and say, “My Christ...”
“...remind me: what is it that may still hinder me from drawing near to You?” For this is your concern. You will see: you may meet someone on the road, and at once your nous, your spiritual intellect, will return to some situation from the past. You may have a dream that leads you to details by which you are still bound. You may hear a sermon or read a pamphlet. In countless ways, Christ will see to it that you become unstuck. But a person must desire this and actively seek it. Even when we are beneath the priest’s stole and have taken care to confess everything, we should know that some things may still remain. And in our confession we should say, “Father...”
“I ask the Lord to forgive me also for whatever I do not remember, because if I remembered it at this moment, I would confess it.” God knows our sincerity; then He helps us and forgives these things as well. We have no other purpose—not that our sweets should turn out well this year, nor that our clothes should look good, nor merely that we should hold our festivities. Our fundamental purpose is to bring the salvation of our soul to completion. That is the point. As I have said, there are two kinds of people: some will come seasonally during these days, either to the Church or even to receive Holy Communion, without any preparation at all. Of course, they think they are in good standing and even have the audacity to say, “If only others were like me.” They accuse everyone and everything so that they can remain as they are.
One evening I told you about a certain trait of the elephant.
It is said that when an elephant finds clear water, it does not drink at once. Instead, it stirs the water with its trunk and makes it muddy, and only then does it drink. Naturalists have concluded that it does not want to see its own reflection in the clear water—to see that ugly trunk of its. That is why it muddies the water around itself: so that it will not see its own ugliness. The very same thing happens to us. That is why we accuse the Gospel, why we accuse the Church, why we accuse the priests, and why we accuse everything connected with the faith that might remind us of our sins. That is the reason; there is no other. We all used to love the Church and the clergy; we went to confession and received Holy Communion...
...as long as we had not fallen into sin. From the moment we became entangled in sin, everyone outside ourselves became to blame, simply because they reminded us of our sin. This is one of Satan’s devices: once he has drawn a person into sin, he closes his eyes and makes him go round and round, laboring for him. Have you seen what people do to animals when they harness them to turn a well wheel? They cover their eyes. As long as their eyes remain covered, they walk in circles day and night. The moment the covering is removed, they stop and look around, as if those animals were saying to themselves, “What have we been doing?” So it is with us.
Satan covers our eyes with sin and makes us dizzy, because a drunken man, overcome by drink, understands neither what he says nor what he does. In exactly the same way, once Satan has planted sin within a person...
...and has him in the grip of his sins, that person becomes dazed and knows neither what he says nor what he does. Satan harnesses him to his own well wheel and exploits him in every way. Yet we enjoy it, and so we ourselves must find a way to escape. These days are especially suited to such reflections, because Christ, as I told you, came into the world for the sins of the world. Have you not handed over your sins? Then no matter how many candles you light or how much incense you offer, nothing comes of it. Besides all that we have already mentioned, there are other things a person must bear in mind during these days.
A person must take care not to become entangled with certain harmful customs that we have adopted, customs that are presented to us during these days until people concern themselves with nothing else. You heard what I read earlier. That soul writes: “Would it be wrong for me to decorate my house very tastefully with a Christmas tree and put it in a prominent place, so that people outside can see that this is a Christian home?” As you know, such things did not exist among us.
They arrived only some years ago, and they came from abroad. These things have no connection with Orthodoxy. They are a product of papism, of the West; that is where they came from. When a person has no inner content in his heart, he tries to load himself down with all these outward things.
He makes his surroundings increasingly showy to compensate for the emptiness within. The further a person advances in Christianity, the more he must free himself from outward excess. But to feel inwardly full, you must have a relationship with God.
You must have a relationship with morality and with virtue in general. I do not know whether you have come across what is told about that dog-loving philosopher Diogenes, one of the Cynics. “Cynic” means dog; the Greek word kyon means dog. Do you know what is said of that great and wise man? He lived inside a large earthen jar. He had no trees, no decorations, no outward display—only a jar. Around his waist, hanging from a string, he carried a small drinking cup, a little dipper that he used to scoop up water and drink.
Whenever he passed a spring, he would use it to drink water. But once, it is said, he saw another man drinking from a fountain with his cupped hands. He immediately concluded that he did not need the cup, so he took it off, threw it away, and freed himself of it. “As long as I have my hands, what do I need the cup for?” Where can such simplicity be found today? Today we bring so many things into our homes that they practically drive us out. Many people can scarcely fit inside because of all their possessions, and yet they remain insatiable. They are never satisfied; they still crave more.
Someone may ask, “Is it a sin?” It is not a sin, but it reveals a person’s emptiness—that he has not yet been filled, has not yet been satisfied, and has no inner substance. Listen to something I once came across: We all have a tendency to gather as many of this world’s possessions as possible, imagining that this will make us happier. But this way of thinking is fundamentally mistaken. Let us not become slaves to possessions; let us not become slaves to circumstances.
Let us not become slaves to our habits. Let us not become slaves to our desires. Christ alone sets us free. Christ alone can guarantee our freedom. Christ alone breaks chains. Christ alone can place a psalm of thanksgiving upon our lips. Yet we try to beautify our surroundings with all sorts of other things, so that we may feel better and more at ease. All the while, we remain slaves. What are these living rooms filled with Saint Basil’s Day decorations and all manner of Christmas ornaments? They are smoking dens—smoking dens in the fullest sense of the word. The young lady, the lady of the house, the gentleman, the grandfather—everyone has filled the place with smoke.
Real smoking dens. And all this happens at a Christmas party, at a gathering, at a New Year’s Eve celebration, and so forth. What is it like inside? You need a mask just to enter. Respectable gentlemen and ladies, supposedly people of standing—and so on. Has Christ set you free? No. I once told you something about cigarettes, which today are considered indispensable at all these gatherings. Everything we have put up on the windows and elsewhere is fumigated with smoke. It is said that the Old Man of the Morea, Kolokotronis, one night during the years of the War of Independence, set out late at night with twenty-two brave young men to cross from Zakynthos to...
Glarentza, here near Katakolo, to help the others who were fighting in this region. When they boarded that night and the boat began to move slowly under oars, so the Turks would not hear them, he reached for his pouch to fill his pipe. Tobacco was kept in a pouch so that it would remain fresh. But his pouch was not there, and this upset him. Then he thought that perhaps one of the other young men might have some. There were twenty-two of them with him, twenty-two brave lads. So the question passed quietly from one to another: “Do you have tobacco? Do you have tobacco? The captain wants some. Have you any tobacco?” And so forth. Not one of those young men smoked. Not one of them smoked.
He became furious, as the saying goes. And what did he do? He took out a skewer he had with him and scraped all around the inside of his pipe, trying to gather a little soot to smoke, just to ease the craving—to poison himself, that is. Ah, simply to make it pass! In an hour, or an hour and a half, or two hours, the craving would return again. But as he was doing this, he came to himself and spoke these memorable words: “Look at this—a man who risks his own neck and aspires to go and liberate his brothers, while he himself has not been freed from a mere weed.” And he threw his pipe into the sea, and he threw his fire striker into the sea.
He threw the mouthpiece into the sea, and the pouch into the sea, and from that very night he gave it up. So what if you put up Christmas trees for me? What if you paint Saint Basil on the windows, with his moustache and cotton wool? What has been gained by that? Is it in itself a sin? It is not something I need to go and confess; it is not a sin. But, as I say, it reveals emptiness. A Christian is inwardly full. He is not preoccupied with such things, nor does he put on a display for others. For many homes that display the Nativity have no birth in their own cradle.
Christ is painted on the windows, yet no child is born in the home. Even if the Nativity of Christ is displayed there, what does that amount to, when children are being killed within that very home? Am I telling lies? How many people will not truly celebrate Christmas? Perhaps a child is there, as I said, but the father will not be in the home, and neither will the mother. Who is going to put up all those trinkets? Where is grandmother’s armchair? Where is grandfather’s armchair? And where is the child’s cradle? These things no longer exist; they have all been torn away. Such decorations are not needed. Why should they be? They are the concerns of the world, the empty world. When Christ enters within, everything changes, and these things are no longer needed.
Should we draw a pistol and tell someone, “Take those things down”? No, leave them. Unbelievers pass by outside. Atheists and people of other religions pass by, and they say that there are still madmen—for that is what they call Christians—who have been led astray by a Jew. Yet Christ is still being proclaimed; something is happening. The same is true of the carols sung by the children, regardless of why they go out, and of blind people who go out singing carols to collect money, even though they do not believe in Christ, and of various other organizations as well.
As I tell you, there is always a stir surrounding a certain Person. He moves people’s hearts, despite the stubborn efforts of Satan and all the Antichrists to erase this name. So among us there are customs observed on these occasions that are not truly our own. Some people introduce still other customs and begin planning them even now: a friendly dinner, for example, on Christmas Eve.
Then there is New Year’s Eve. The New Year, of course, comes seasoned with pepper and salt, but also with playing cards, a deck of cards, drunkenness, and many other things. These are not beautiful customs. Are these supposed to bring a blessed and happy new year? Seriously? You have done this for many years—have you seen any good come of it? Nothing. Everything goes from bad to worse. So what are you telling me? If you saw happiness flowing from it, then repeat it. But since no happiness comes from it, and every day you seek happiness in places where happiness does not exist, these things must one day come to an end. But I ask this: How can a Christian hold a dinner at home on Christmas Eve? What sort of dinner is that? It is a day of strict fasting!
Will you be serving moussaka? How can you abolish the fast? Why are you not preparing from the evening before to go to Bethlehem in the morning, to meet your Savior and worship Him? Those who spend Christmas Eve feasting and reveling cannot possibly attend Church in the morning—certainly not as the Church calls us to go: in holiness, like the shepherds, going early in the morning to find Christ newly born. Is it possible? No, it is not. You immediately understand the harm that is done. This choice of yours prevents you from attending Church the following day. And if you do not attend Church on Christmas, when will you ever do so? When? If, when God comes to find you in the world and save you, you do not go to thank Him...
Will you go on some other occasion? When exactly are you planning to go? If there is one day especially appointed for these things, it is Christmas Day. You understand, then, what harm is done, besides everything else. For even in these gatherings among friends there are seeds of corruption, both for married people and for the unmarried. Satan exploits all these things in his own way. And you will have noticed that the saddest events, the greatest ruin of families, occur within these friendly circles. That is why a person must avoid them as much as possible.
John Chrysostom speaks about Herod’s birthday and says: Herodias may not be present at the feast we hold, at our little celebration, at what we call an intimate gathering of joy; but the devil is there—the same one who played his part on that night when the head of the Honorable Forerunner was taken. The devil is there, because wherever there is dancing and instrumental music, there too is the devil. Wherever there is dancing, there is the devil. And you know that our songs turn us outward. They make a person forget his purpose, forget himself, his sin, his wretched condition, and so forth. For a certain time they turn him entirely outward, and at that moment the person...
...is vulnerable in the hands of Satan, who does with him whatever he wishes. That is where everything begins. Consider also what happens on New Year’s Day; we shall address that as well. Most people regard it as an opportunity to bring a blessing upon the home. Indeed, they interpret it as being “for good luck.” And you know that today, just as most homes feel the need to own a frying pan for cooking, they also feel the need to have a green felt gaming cloth, counters, and a deck of cards. These too have now become household equipment. Do you understand where we are heading?
There are even those who somehow imagine Saint Basil as a card player, as though New Year’s Day and Saint Basil’s feast cannot be celebrated without a deck of cards and gambling. Do you understand where we are going? People do not realize that through playing cards Satan mocks the holy Persons, as I explained on another occasion. The queen represents the Most Holy Theotokos, the jack represents Christ, the king represents God the Father, while the diamond, the sword, the heart, and the club represent the Cross—the Precious Cross. The holy Persons and the Precious Cross are mocked through the deck of cards that people bring into their homes and use for entertainment. And then they sit down to play. Who sits down intending to lose? Everyone plays in order to win. Then who will lose—me, while I am asleep? And if you win, what have you gained? What, in the final analysis, have you done? You have robbed another person of the fruit of his labor, his daily wage, and his child’s shoes.
You have taken the money for his wife’s clothing, because a husband who is weak and enslaved to gambling does not gamble with what belongs only to him; he gambles with what rightfully belongs to others. Sometimes the wife does the same, or both of them together, for we have such cases as well. Do you understand? Money won through cards is money obtained by robbery—by robbery. You have no right to it. Ask the person who is about to be plundered. Everything else comes from the evil one. And yet at this season people will open their homes and invite others in. Besides the other wickedness involved, they will invite people who are like chickens, so that other birds of prey may pluck them bare. Can you imagine such things taking place under the blessing of God...
...and of Saint Basil the Great? Yet these things will happen again this year; they will happen. Therefore, if those of us who hear these words believe them to be right, let us try to act—not, I repeat, by drawing a pistol, but gently and instructively, enlightening someone on this matter if we can. Or perhaps someone will willingly decide to stop, and will not open his home and give Satan room for the shameful things that took place in former years. Especially in our own days, we must intensify this effort as much as we can. I do not know whether you know the origin of the custom of giving gifts. Here we differ from the Papists. The Papists exchange gifts at Christmas. We give our gifts on New Year’s Day.
Today we are being led astray by them, because we imitate them and do not preserve our integrity. We readily sell whatever is beautiful and right in our own tradition, and adopt whatever is empty in theirs. They believe that Christ came as a gift from God, and they regard Christmas as the greatest feast. And just as God gave Christ as a gift, so people give gifts to one another. Yet this custom did not begin from that. Among the Papists, the chief emphasis—their greatest feast—is Christmas. It is not the Resurrection, as it is for us; it is Christmas. That is precisely why they do not appear at the Most Holy Sepulchre, nor do the Papists receive the light from the Most Holy Sepulchre, which the Most Holy Sepulchre gives miraculously every Holy Saturday around midday, between eleven and one. We too give gifts.
But our gifts are not wisely chosen according to the reason gifts were established among Christians. I give a gift to my girlfriend, when there is sin between us. I give a tie to a friend, when there is sin between us. I give a gift to someone in order to place him under an obligation to me. Indeed, many times I attach a promissory note to it, so to speak: I gave it for some ulterior purpose. Our gifts are not blessed by God. If those of you who do not know would like to learn where the gifts given on Saint Basil’s feast come from—although I think we have discussed it in another talk—Julian the Apostate was once a close friend and fellow student of Saint Basil the Great in Athens. But afterward he went to the opposite extreme.
He became an atheist, and so forth. Then he passed through Saint Basil the Great’s territory, traveling down through Cappadocia on a campaign of conquest. As he crossed that region, he knew that Saint Basil the Great was in Caesarea, in the diocese of Cappadocia, and he sent a soldier to ask him for bread. Saint Basil the Great sent him two loaves of barley bread. When Julian saw them, he took offense and said to himself, “Does he take me for an animal, sending me barley bread?” So he took two bundles of hay and sent them to Saint Basil the Great, together with the threat: “When I return, you will pay for what you have done to me.” Do you understand? When Saint Basil saw this...
“Each person gives what he himself eats. I ate barley bread, so I sent him barley bread. He does not eat hay, so why did he send hay to me?” Yet Saint Basil took the threat seriously, knowing that Julian might harm his people. So he appealed to them: “My children, this is what has happened. Julian is going off to war; these things have taken place, and now he is threatening us. When he returns, he will do us harm. He is after money. I thought we might collect something among ourselves, and when I learn that he is returning, I can find two or three people and send them with a sum of money to stop his advance against us. It may cost us some money, but money can be earned again. Human lives cannot be replaced.” The thought was sound and reasonable, and everyone agreed. “Then leave whatever you wish over there in the offering box.” Everyone came forward and gave what they could out of a sense of duty—earrings...
gold jewelry, money, gold watches—everything was left there, until a great heap had formed. When Saint Basil learned that Julian was returning victorious and triumphant from the campaign, he called the people to an all-night vigil. The vigil was held in the upper part of the city, where there was a church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. Toward dawn, Saint Basil sat down at a chanter’s stand, in one of the choir stalls, and fell asleep. Before him he saw the Most Holy Theotokos, radiant with light, commanding an angel to summon her servant Mercurius. A little later, he saw Mercurius arrive. She told him, “Go and strike down the enemy of my Son.” Then she turned and smiled at Saint Basil. Saint Basil awoke with a start, and the tempter suggested to him that he had seen only what he wanted to happen.
He thought, “Perhaps I only imagined that the Most Holy Theotokos would intervene. After all, it was a dream.” Yet one name kept troubling him inwardly: “Mercurius, Mercurius.” Down in the city, the Saint’s whole body lay in a reliquary. What could this mean? Saint Basil entered the sanctuary, went out through the rear door, and hurried down into the city without saying anything to anyone. When he arrived, he found the reliquary empty. Saint Mercurius was not inside. He called the sacristan, who came and said, “This frightens me. When I came earlier, I venerated the Saint, and he was here.” Saint Basil then understood that something had happened, that the Most Holy Theotokos had acted. Soon afterward, horsemen and messengers arrived with news that Julian had been struck down and had died on the road. Putting everything together—the dream, the empty reliquary, and the report—Saint Basil understood what had taken place.
Saint Basil understood that the Most Holy Theotokos had intervened. He hurried back as fast as he could, climbed to the upper part of the city, entered again through the rear door, and returned just in time. Raising his hands, he said, “Brothers, take heart and do not be afraid. The Most Holy Theotokos has delivered us.” He then told them what had happened and said, “Now come and take back whatever each of you gave. Let everyone receive what belongs to him.” With one voice they all replied, “We will take nothing back. We offered these things, and you may do with them whatever you wish.” And so he gave them to hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly, and other charitable works. These are the gifts of Saint Basil the Great. They are not the pajamas we buy for our friends, nor ties, nor bicycles.
They are not balloons or any of those other things. These are the gifts of Saint Basil the Great. These are the kinds of gifts a Christian should give to the poor and needy, rather than spending on needless things that arrive by the shipload and are thrown away the day after Christmas. Forgive me for what I have said. Perhaps I have departed from the subject, but pay as much attention as you can, and during these days put into practice what the Church teaches. Let us prepare ourselves, then, through metanoia—repentance—and confession for Holy Communion. Let us avoid, as far as we can, these sins associated with Christmas and New Year’s Day, and, having been cleansed as much as possible, let us also receive the Great Agiasmos, the great blessing of water, the day after tomorrow. We shall speak about these matters later, if God permits. I wish you blessed feasts!

Μουσακάς θα είναι; Πώς εσύ καταργείς τη νηστεία; Πώς δεν ετοιμάζεσαι από βραδύς να πας το πρωί στη Βηθλεέμ, να συναντήσεις τον Σωτήρα σου και να τον προσκυνήσεις; Γιατί άνθρωποι οι οποίοι θα γλεντοκοπήσουν το βράδυ των Χριστουγέννων, παραμονή, δεν είναι δυνατόν να εκκλησιαστούν το πρωί. Και μάλιστα όπως μας θέλει η Εκκλησία, άγια, σαν ποιμένες να πάμε πρωί πρωί κάτω να βρούμε τον Χριστό γεννημένον. Είναι δυνατόν; Δεν είναι δυνατόν. Καταλαβαίνετε αμέσως τι ζημιά γίνεται. Σου απαγορεύει αυτή σου η χειρονομία να εκκλησιαστείς την άλλη μέρα. Κι αν δεν εκκλησιαστείς τα Χριστούγεννα, πότε θα έρθει η περίπτωση να εκκλησιαστείς; Πότε; Εάν, όταν έρχεται ο Θεός να σε βρει στον κόσμο για να σε σώσει, δεν πας να του πεις το ευχαριστώ;
