Summary

Saint Nicholas of Myra is presented through his apolytikion as a rule of faith, image of meekness, and teacher of temperance whose protection extends to all who are abandoned or neglected. Miracles associated with Saint Achillios, Saint Spyridon, and Saint Nicholas at the council are presented as confirmations of the Holy Trinity and the Orthodox confession. Citing Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, the lecture concludes that Christians are known by their conduct, calling believers to embody their confession through fasting, worship, moral discipline, and practical obedience.

This evening, by the grace of God, I wanted to say something about the feast of the day. You know, among the other commemorations today, our Holy Church also celebrates Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra and Wonderworker—a great figure whose life teaches us a profound moral and doctrinal lesson. We cannot really speak of lesser and greater saints; those are distinctions we make. How they appear in the eyes of God, I do not know. In any case, he is such a person that...

almost everyone—not only those who bear his name—ought to call upon him, because he has great standing before God. Our Holy Church has dedicated Thursday to him. You know, each day of the week has its own sacred commemoration: Monday is dedicated to the Angels; other days to the Honorable Forerunner, Saint Nicholas, and the Precious Cross. If you look in your prayer book under Thursday, you will find hymns speaking of Saint Nicholas. He is a deeply beloved figure. He is the protector of widows and orphans—and not only of those who wear mourning.

There are other kinds of widows and orphans as well. There are children who have parents, yet in reality have no parents; and there are women who have husbands, yet in reality have no husbands. Saint Nicholas is their protector too. He has much to teach us about faith and about the virtues a person must necessarily possess if he wishes to be called a Christian. He was a Father of the First Ecumenical Council; indeed, Saint Nicholas was among its 318 Fathers.

His is a story with many dimensions. For every saint or feast, our Holy Church sums up the event in two hymns: one is called the Apolytikion, and the other the Kontakion. If you want to learn, in concise form, about an event, the commemoration of a saint, a feast of the Theotokos, or a feast of the Lord, study—do not merely read, but study—the Apolytikion and Kontakion of the feast. Everything is stated there in summary. The same is true of...

the life of Saint Nicholas. There are three fundamental things in the life of Saint Nicholas, all contained in his Apolytikion. If, God willing, we chant his Apolytikion at the end, we shall say: “The truth of your deeds revealed you to your flock as a rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of temperance,” and so forth. It presents him through this threefold description: a rule of faith, an image of meekness, and a teacher of temperance—qualities necessary for every person who wishes to be saved and to find the way.

But where are these qualities to be found? If we examine ourselves first, or the people around us, or the world more generally, we shall find that true and right faith is lacking. Do you know what “rule” means here?

It means a measure—a ruler or a set square by which we measure. That is what “rule of faith” means: faith measured exactly, with nothing lacking and nothing added; faith that is correct. And if we examine matters closely, we shall find that even we ourselves...

do not have correct faith in many things. Ask people—Christians, of course, at least on paper and on their identity cards—what they think about the faith, and you will hear all kinds of things.

Christ came into the world. As we read in the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, He once asked His disciples who people believed Him to be: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am? You go about among the people in the marketplace—what do you hear them saying about Me?” And they told Him what they had heard.

“Some say that You are the Honorable Forerunner; others think You are the Prophet Elijah; others, Jeremiah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “Very well,” He said, “that is what people are saying in the marketplace. But who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am? Who do you believe Me to be?” And as the sixteenth chapter of Matthew, from verse sixteen onward, tells us, Peter came forward and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” When Peter spoke these words, Christ called him blessed, saying, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah—blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah.” Why is he blessed, Lord? “Because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you.” What you said did not come from you, but from My Father.

He used your mouth to give the correct definition of who I am. So the issue is not what people commonly say: “Do you believe?” “Of course; there is something out there.” But what is this “something”? One person calls it a higher power. Another says, “There is some higher being; something exists.” A Jehovah’s Witness says, “Jehovah exists.” A Protestant says, “Christ.” The Orthodox Christian also says, “Christ.” But which Christ? Is the Christ of the Protestant the same as the Christ of the Orthodox Christian?

Today, outside the Orthodox Church, there are about two thousand separate branches, all speaking about the Gospel of Christ. Which of them has Christ? There is only one Christ. What kind of Christ do they have? You may know that in America there is a satellite broadcasting throughout the country, and on certain television channels—channel 15 or 21, for example—you can turn them on at any hour of the day or night and find some heresy speaking about Christ. So which Christ is the true one? Who has the real Christ?

If they all had the one Christ, they would live in the same way. They would hold one teaching and belong to one faith. Instead, one says, “It is not like that; it is like this.” Another says, “No, it is not like that; it is like this.” Another says, “This is what I think.” Since they have split into two thousand pieces, they clearly do not have the same Christ—or else they have a Christ fashioned by their own imagination. This is something we too must understand and watch carefully,

so that we can test whether we are in the true faith. There is evidence, then, showing who the real Christ is: He is the Christ whom Thomas touched and, recognizing Him, cried out, “My Lord and my God.” Someone may say...

“Then I too must touch Him, so that I can be certain it is truly He.”

Well, fly to the Ionian Islands and see. There you will find five tangible encounters with the Lord. Saint Spyridon is such an encounter with the Lord. Saint Theodora the Empress, who is there on Corfu, is an encounter with the Lord. Saint Gerasimos on Kefalonia is an encounter with the Lord. Saint Dionysios on Zakynthos is an encounter with the Lord. And there is yet another saint at Gaitani, Saint Joseph. Another holy relic lies at Gaitani on Zakynthos. I want you to know that there are five whole relics in the Ionian Islands. There are not only Saint Spyridon, Saint Gerasimos, and Saint Dionysios. The complete relic of Empress Theodora Augusta is also kept in the Metropolitan Church of Our Lady of the Strangers.

And there is another relic in the village of Gaitani, that of an archimandrite from Cyprus. There are five whole relics. These are five tangible encounters with Christ. Go there, and let them speak to you. They are not preserved there by themselves, through some natural power. Nor are they the only ones: Saint Patapios, Saint John the Russian, another in the Metropolis of Mytilene, another on Kalymnos, another on Schinoussa, another on Aegina, many in Constantinople, and eighty complete relics in Russia. Among them is the relic of Saint Nicholas. The Saint Nicholas of whom we are speaking was sold to Russia. I shall tell you about that later.

So we have the measure; we have the measuring rule by which to discover who the real Christ is. For us—and for everyone else—the proof concerning Christ is in Jerusalem. The fact that Christ’s tomb in Jerusalem is empty proves that He is the real Christ and the true God, because Hades could not hold Him. The popes, the heads of the papal church, all remain bound in their burial shrouds. Buddha remains bound in his shroud. Muhammad remains bound in his shroud. Calvin and Russell remain in their shrouds. Only Jesus has an empty tomb. So Christ is not merely the one whom Peter confessed...

He is the Christ in whom we believe, the One proclaimed by the Archangel to the Myrrh-bearing Women. When they came with their myrrh, the Archangel said, “Why do you seek here Jesus the crucified Nazarene? He is not here; He is risen. Look at the place where they laid Him.” The tomb was empty. Many people say they believe in Christ—but in which Christ? Do they believe in Christ the Crucified, the Nazarene, the Risen One? If they believed in this Christ, they would be Orthodox. Since they are not Orthodox, they do not believe in Him.

So we possess not only faith, but knowledge as well. The tomb of our Leader is empty—and this concerns us too. It is a pledge that one day, by His power, our own tombs will also be opened. He is the firstborn from the dead, and those who believe will follow after Him as the second-born, the third-born, and all who come later. They will rise again. “He who believes in Me, though he may die, shall live.” And, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” It cannot be otherwise. Just as He did not leave His own body in the tomb, so the bodies of all who have received Holy Communion with His resurrectional Body cannot possibly remain in the tomb. And alongside the empty tomb of the Author of Life—which is our pledge and confirms that He is the true God—there is also the empty tomb of His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos.

The tomb of the Mother of Life is also empty. Among all the religions in the world, only two tombs are empty: that of our Lord Jesus Christ and that of His All-Holy Mother. One is in Jerusalem, and the other is in Gethsemane. The whole world can see them—the Jews, the Muslims, and all the people who pass through there. They see them, if only they are willing to believe. Today faith is not merely a matter of belief, but also of knowledge. So the question is not simply whether a person believes, but whether he believes rightly. That is why Saint Nicholas is called a “rule of faith.” And he proved that his faith was right by his conduct at the First Ecumenical Council. You know that he struck Arius.

Despite his meekness, he could not endure the blasphemies being spoken against the Lord and His divinity, and before the emperor he struck Arius. Now, in the iconography of Saint Nicholas, what do we see? Unlike the other saints, he is characteristically shown holding the Gospel. And he is always shown wearing the omophorion, often depicted in very dark colors. Do you know the story behind this, and why, above Saint Nicholas in the icon, the Most Holy Theotokos is shown on one side and Christ on the other? According to tradition, when he struck Arius during the Council, the following consequences were to be imposed upon him:

His hand was to be cut off, because he had struck someone in the presence of the emperor. But it was decided that his hand should not be cut off while the Council was still in session. Instead, he was to be stripped of his episcopal rank and imprisoned. When the work of the Council was finished, the hand that had dared to strike someone before the emperor would be cut off. And so Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, was stripped of his rank and placed in prison. There, in prison, he received a visit from our Lord and from the Most Holy Theotokos. The Lord said to him, “Nicholas, why are you here?” He answered, “For love of You, Lord.” And the Lord gave him a Gospel book.

The Most Holy Theotokos gave him an omophorion. The next morning, when one of his friends came to bring him a little food in prison, he found Nicholas restored to the full dignity of a bishop, holding the Gospel in his hand and reading. In other words, Christ blessed that hand of Saint Nicholas and the blow it had struck. This too was a miracle confirming the true faith, which was vindicated by Christ Himself, who was watching over the events of the First Ecumenical Council. It was one of four miracles that took place at that time, for four miracles occurred at the First Ecumenical Council. The first was when Saint Achillios, Bishop of Larissa, caused oil to flow from a stone.

“Arius, if what you say is true, tell this stone to produce oil.” Arius turned the challenge back upon him: “You tell it to produce oil.” And in the name of the Holy Trinity, the stone brought forth oil. That was the first miracle. The second was Christ’s restoration of Nicholas. The third was the miracle of the roof tile performed by Saint Spyridon. He said, “In the name of the Father,” and fire rose upward, earth remained in his hands, and water flowed downward. Then, at his words, these became a tile once more. A tile is three and one: one tile, but made of three elements. A man named Kourvounis also performed a miracle, though I do not know exactly what he did. Thus, four miracles took place at the First Ecumenical Council. And the faith of Saint Nicholas...

Even beyond his death—and I would like you to know this as well—Saint Nicholas remained whole and incorrupt at Myra after he fell asleep, and later he was taken to Bari in Italy. The separation had not yet taken place; the papists had not yet broken away, nor had the pope yet made himself a god and declared himself infallible. Priests served as equals, whether they were Westerners or Orthodox Greeks, because the Church was still one. Fragrant myrrh flowed from the relic’s feet, enough to fill a cauldron. When the priests saw the myrrh flowing, they prolonged the service as much as they could. Instead of completing it in one hour, they made it last three, so that they could gather more. But when...

the schism took place and the papists departed, claiming holiness, infallibility, divinity, and so forth, Saint Nicholas ceased to pour forth myrrh. When did this happen? When a papist priest served. When an Orthodox priest served, the myrrh flowed; when a papist served, it did not. It was as though the saint were protesting and saying, “Gentlemen, you are in error.” This caused the Westerners to become bitter and to sell Saint Nicholas to the Russians. They claim that they still possess him, but they have never displayed him. There is said to be a cenotaph there at the Vatican, but Saint Nicholas is not inside it. Saint Nicholas was sold to the Russians. You see, even after death he remains steadfast in the true faith, reminding them: “Gentlemen, you are in error.”

Return to where you once were, so that the blessing of God may come upon you. The first and most fundamental thing for a person, then, is faith. We Orthodox ask, “Do you know the Creed?” “Of course I know it.” “Of how many articles is it composed?” “Twelve”—and you cannot remove or alter a single one, because then you become a heretic. A heretic means someone outside the Church. How does the Creed begin? With the words, “I believe.” “I believe in one God.” “And in one Lord Jesus Christ.” “Begotten...” “I believe... in one Baptism.” “I believe...” “And the life of the age to come.” “I look for the resurrection of the dead.” I believe. The Creed begins with “I believe.” Faith is indispensable. But that faith...

must be right. I would say that faith can be divided into two kinds: dead faith and living faith. Some people possess living faith, while others possess dead faith. They believe, but they live like devils. They believe, but they do not act. That is the issue. Sadly, this is true of many of us: we believe in God, but do not listen to God. We believe in God, but do not do what God says. That is where the truth becomes clear. The one who believes most accurately and certainly in the existence of God is Satan. “Even the demons believe—and tremble,” writes James, the Brother of the Lord, but they do not act.

They believe, but they do not act. A person proves his faith through his deeds—through his deeds. Many events in the Old Testament were accomplished through faith. Read the eleventh chapter of Hebrews carefully and calmly. There you will see what Paul writes about the things accomplished through faith in the Old Testament. They “stopped the mouths of lions,” he says, and “quenched the power of fire.” “Women received their sons back by resurrection.” I want you to understand that when it says, “Women received their sons back by resurrection,” it does not mean that they saw their children married. Their children were dead, and they received them back alive.

One was the widow of Zarephath in Sidon, whose son the Holy Prophet Elijah raised from the dead. The other was the Shunammite woman, whose son the Prophet Elisha raised. Paul also says in 2 Timothy 4:7 that living faith has these qualities: through it the believer overcomes the world, the flesh, and the devil, and receives the crown of righteousness. These are the people who possess living faith. Those without living faith simply believe, but they do not act and they do not struggle. They do not receive the fruits and blessings that living faith brings. Whoever possesses living faith must understand that...

before God, he is wretched, poor, and pitiable. That is the person who believes rightly. Do you remember how the Lord spoke to the angel of Laodicea, the Bishop of Laodicea? “You are wretched, naked, and blind.” I counsel you to buy gold from Me and to ask Me for eye salve, so that you may anoint your eyes and see your true condition. Read the opening chapters of the Apocalypse, where this letter is written. That is what it says there. Furthermore, a person with true faith believes that he is subject to God’s righteous wrath: “I justly deserve punishment, and I cannot justify myself...”

He will not succeed by his own power. This is what it means to have true faith. That is why both John the Forerunner and the Lord begin with “Repent,” not with “Do good works.” Furthermore, whoever possesses true faith must accept without hesitation the teaching of the prophets and the apostles and believe that Jesus Christ alone saves. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin. Nothing else does. A person’s works have value only when they are joined to a living relationship with Christ and flow from the achievement of faith. Works by themselves do not bring a person righteousness and salvation.

To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, a person needs admission—a ticket. He does not need suitcases. The Prodigal Son had no suitcases, but he had a ticket. The Publican had no suitcases, but he had a ticket. The elder brother of the Prodigal had suitcases but no ticket, so he remained outside. The Pharisee had suitcases but no ticket, so he remained outside. The thief had no suitcases—no works—but he had a ticket, and he entered. It is good to have both. A traveler is fortunate when he has secured his ticket and also has his luggage, especially if that luggage is of the finest kind. Then all is well for him. That is why Paul says in Romans 3:22: “The righteousness of God through faith...”

“in Christ, for all and upon all who believe.” Faith is always the foundation, not some way of our own devising. For the most part, we do not possess this living faith together with the corresponding works, by which we may stand before God. Therefore, it is not enough for a person to be called a Christian, nor is it enough to say that he believes; he must actually be a Christian. That is the issue. One of the Fathers said, “Not everyone who believes something is called faithful; only the one who believes God is truly faithful.” In other words, the person who believes rightly is the one who truly believes.

Paul says something beautiful in Galatians: “We believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by works.” We believed in Him because He will help us and He will save us—not our own works. I had hoped that I would be able to present to you...

the teaching of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer concerning faith and works: what they must be like if our faith is to be shown as true, a genuine rule of faith, and a faith that brings salvation. As I have told you, a person must know that he is wretched. He must acknowledge this and not imagine that he can accomplish anything by some way or power of his own. No!

He says, “Do not merely be called a Christian; be one. For blessedness lies not in being called one, but in being one.” Do not merely have “Christian” written on your identity card; let your actions prove that you are a Christian. We here are now called Christians. But if our works were measured by God’s standard and His righteousness, might they prove that we are not Christians? If you visit tonight the homes of those celebrating their name day, the men named Nicholas, you will find that they are not Christians. Out of a hundred homes celebrating, ninety-eight, ninety-seven, or ninety-five are not Christian homes. They are eating meat today.

They disregard the fast. They do not care that true faith does not permit this, and that the very saint whose name they bear does not approve of it. It does not concern them; they did not even give a thought to the fast during these days. Yet they call themselves Christians, though they have no real connection with the living faith. Consider church attendance. They call themselves Orthodox Christians, appearing outside with candles at the Resurrection and attending services at Christmas. My children, their deeds prove that they are not Christians. Some cheat in their businesses, others lie, others blaspheme, others gamble, others commit adultery or fornication. They are all called Christians, but it is clear that they do not possess the real thing. That is why he says here, “It is fitting not merely to be called Christians, but to be Christians.”

“Blessedness lies not in being called one, but in being one.” The person who truly is a Christian, and whose Christian life proves it, is genuinely a Christian. And he continues: “Those who profess to belong to Christ are known not only by what they say, but also by what they do.” They are recognized by their deeds. “For a tree is known by its fruit.” “It is better to be silent and to be, than to speak and not to be.” Better to remain silent than to claim that you are something when you are not, only for the truth to prove otherwise. “For the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.” And again: “Right doctrines will profit Christians nothing...”

“If he neglects the conduct of his life.” What benefit is there? “I believe in the Holy Trinity.” And what comes of it? Listen to what the Holy Trinity says. Let me tell you. I was speaking with a lady who was coming out of the hairdresser’s. I asked, “Where have you been?” She said, “I went to have my hair done.” “What do you mean, have your hair done?” I said. “Did you go out of your house for that?” “No, I too,” she said, “had gone to…” What? To style your hair, to cut it? Did God, who gave it to you, not know what He was doing? Why does your hair not fall out? Have you ever seen a bald woman? Why does women’s hair not fall out? Of course, I tell you, God will ask you to account for every hair. We men are bald. How do I know what you are like? You are religious.

What, then, will become of the others who are not religious? We know a lady who serves in the charitable society, who is there day and night with medicines in her hand and so forth. But does she have her hair done? No—she styles it, disguises herself, and cuts it. No, she has it done, although she could comb it at home. Someone will say that this is going too far. But does God want these things? Seriously, does God want them? Was God writing lies? Do the Synods write lies? Yet this is what we refuse to understand. We regard it as nothing, but in the eyes of God it matters. Do you know what Satan says? He once said to a spiritual father, “She belongs to me.” “Get out of here!” the priest replied. “You thrice-accursed one, are you telling me that she belongs to you?” “You act as a priest and confessor, and you do not know? She belongs to me.” “How does she belong to you?”

“From the moment I took the Holy Trinity off her head, she became mine. Now I sit upon her head.” This is what a demon said to a priest at a monastery one morning. The demon was shouting from within, “Welcome, my little sisters, welcome!” “Who are your little sisters?” they asked. Then they saw two women coming down by the waterfall and arriving there. “Those are my sisters,” it said. “What was the Holy Trinity that he removed?” It was their three braids—the three. “From the moment I cut it off,” it said, “and removed it, I have been sitting there, upon her head.” Today the hair is one way, tomorrow another—one woman like this, another like that. But how are we to believe these things or pay attention to them? It is the same with what we have been saying these days about fasting and the rest. They say fasting was invented. Who invented fasting? Who do they imagine invented it? Who established fasting? Was it made by human beings?

Does anyone ever make laws against his own belly? He pampers and indulges his belly and abolishes everything that stands in the way of satisfying it. He pays no attention to falsehood. So this saying is entirely correct: “There is no benefit for us in being called Christians unless the works follow as well.” You prove it by your deeds. “For it is written…” If you were children of Abraham—if you truly were!

If you are children of Abraham, you should do the works of Abraham. If I believe rightly and am a true rule of faith, then, as far as I am able, I will put into practice what I believe. As you know, none of the things of faith can ever be exhausted.

I have touched upon one of the virtues and qualities associated with Saint Nicholas. His second virtue is meekness: he is an image of meekness. Are we meek? And if we are not, why are we not? What is lacking? Why do we not possess meekness? Because we do not have the grace of the Holy Spirit.

The grace of the Holy Spirit produces meekness. You should know that meekness is not for sale. You cannot say, “I will buy a pound of it at any price.” It is not sold. It is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Read about the fruits of the Holy Spirit in Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two and following, and there you will learn that goodness, meekness, temperance, and the rest are…

A person who is not meek has no relationship with Christ. And wherever meekness is absent, there is no dwelling place for the Holy Spirit. Will the Holy Spirit remain amid quarrels and outbursts of anger? It flies away. It has departed, and then you must go and seek it again. It does not simply return. Christ said clearly, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” Learn. Elsewhere He says, “Consider the lilies of the field,” which neither toil nor spin, and see what they are like. Consider them deeply. Go and ponder that lily over there, which by evening may be trampled by an unlawful couple or eaten by a goat, and see how carefully the Creator has adorned it. Go and reflect upon it.

“Consider the lilies of the field.” And here He says, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart.” And blessed are the meek. Someone says, “I am only human. I have nerves, not water in my veins.” Really? Woe to you if you remain merely human. Strive to become a Christian. And when you become a Christian, your nerves will be calmed. Your blood will cool, and you will not become fierce, lose your temper, grow angry, seek revenge, or put another person in her place while stepping out of your own. As you know, no one tears down his own house in order to build someone else’s. Many people, as we often say, demand respect for their personal dignity, yet lose their Christian dignity in the process. They put someone else in his place, but they themselves step out of theirs. This they fail to notice.

A Christian does not behave like a snapping puppy. Be careful—be very careful. Satan tries to draw us out of our shell. He makes every effort to do this. I remember when I traveled abroad—not last year, but the year before, I think, on my first visit. An Old Calendarist priest telephoned me and asked me to go on the radio so that we could discuss his views and mine. I said to him, “Geronta, whom will we edify if the two of us fight like roosters? Whom will we edify? If we have something to say, let me come, make a prostration before you, and hear what you have to tell me; then I will tell you my views. Whom will we edify?” He was determined to get me onto the radio. I told him, “With God’s help, I will not come out of my shell.”

I came to say a few words to the people, so that, if they wish, they may return to the Church, repent, go to Confession, and become people of God. I do not engage in such things. For thirty years I have struggled not to be moved from my place, and now you think you will draw me out merely because you wound my ego? You will not succeed. And nothing happened. “I took thirty-six families,” he said. “Were they your property?” I replied. “Do you own people privately here? They are families and people of Christ. Yet you have private churches over there.” “That is precisely why I took thirty-six from you,” he said. He wanted to put me on the radio so that everyone in Montreal would hear Panagopoulos arguing with such a man. There he is as well. It is a great thing to guard yourself so that no one draws you out, your blood does not boil, and you bite your tongue. A person must struggle in this matter, but to succeed…

There must be at least a measure of humility within us. If there is no humility, your blood will boil and you will never have meekness. And whenever your blood boils, know that the grace of the Holy Spirit has departed and is no longer present. Then try to bring it back. This requires metanoia, kneeling, tears, and so forth. You know, when the grace of God abandons us, Satan can make short work of us. Saint John Climacus has a beautiful saying. Listen to it. The meek person is an image of the guileless, meek, and humble Jesus Christ. Christ is the guileless One, the Lamb. The meek person is an image of the guileless, meek, and humble Jesus Christ. Meekness is an indescribable treasure; it is a divine name.

It is a heavenly gift, a ladder that raises a person to Heaven. Fierceness—the absence of meekness—is the mark of the demons and casts a person down into Hades. People say, “He was a good man; he was only nervous, only hot-tempered.” So much for that. What goodness? There is no goodness there. The day after tomorrow we celebrate Saint Spyridon. In front of the imperial palace in Constantinople, Saint Spyridon was slapped by the soldier standing guard. The elder turned his other cheek, and the soldier’s sword fell from his hands. “Where am I? What have I done?” he cried. From such examples a person can see where he still falls short and struggle in that area.

I fall into anger and lose my temper; I do not possess the meekness that would preserve the grace of the Holy Spirit within me. In Isaiah there is a question from God and an answer from God Himself. God asks, and God answers: “Upon whom shall I look?” Upon whom shall I set My gaze? With whom shall I remain? “But upon the meek and humble man who trembles at My words.” Upon this person, He says, I shall look: the meek, the humble, and the one who trembles at My words. God says this. He does not say the clever person, the charitable person, or even the person who prays. He says the meek, the humble, and the one who trembles at His words. This does not mean that He rejects the other virtues—God forbid; that is not what I mean. This is what moves the heart of God.

This is what moves the heart of God. In accordance with these things, Paul says to Timothy in his Second Epistle: “A servant of the Lord”—if we wish to be servants of the Lord—“must not quarrel.” He must not become fierce, but must be gentle toward everyone. Toward everyone—everyone. Some people make excuses for themselves, but these are foolish excuses. He must be gentle toward everyone, forbearing, able to teach, and “correcting with meekness those who oppose him.” Correcting them with meekness, patient endurance, and longsuffering. Then you show that you are a deeply cultivated Christian: when you can bear another person’s faults as Christ bears them. For if Christ were to let His blood boil a little and demand from each of us…

an account and strict justice, we would be finished. That would be the end of us. “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” No one could stand before Him. But He shows longsuffering, meekness, gentleness, and guilelessness toward us; and perhaps in this way we can slowly make some progress and accomplish something. Otherwise, what would become of us? We would be lost. We ask God to be meek and gentle with us and not to grow fierce against us. We ask this because every day we trouble Him. Yet what we ask for and receive from Him, we do not offer to others. We do not even struggle to do so. For it begins, as I told you, with humility. I do not know who else stumbles at this point, but I certainly do. Let us strive to receive help from the beautiful lesson given to us by today’s Saint. And there is one more quality: a teacher of temperance.

A teacher of temperance. Listen to a definition of temperance given by Basil the Great. Temperance is the middle way: neither indifference nor excessive care, but what is right. For in this matter, if we do not fall on the left, we often fall on the right. And temperance is a serious and demanding matter, as you know: temperance of the tongue, temperance of the eyes, temperance of the belly, temperance of the flesh and the marriage bed, and temperance in pursuing our own interests. A sound path is needed. Here he deals with temperance in relation to fasting. This is why that title is applied to Saint Nicholas. And for those of you who do not know, learn this: from the time he was a small child, Saint Nicholas would not take milk from his mother’s breast on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Only after the sun had set on Wednesday and Friday, when the liturgical day changed—for Vespers belongs to the following day—would he take his mother’s breast and drink milk. That is why he is called “a teacher of temperance.” If only all those named Nikos knew this, they would realize that they are acting contrary to their own Saint. They cannot receive any blessing while refusing to acknowledge this teaching of his. We Athenians have another such Saint, the Venerable Seraphim of Dombos. If I remember correctly, he is commemorated with the much-suffering Job on May 6. Find this Saint in your Synaxarion and read about him. Saint Seraphim of Dombos…

also would not take his mother’s breast for milk on Wednesdays and Fridays. But that was in those days! Let me tell you something from our own time. In Pythagoreio on Samos there is a small child who was recently baptized. Whenever its mother intends to bring it to Holy Communion the next day—on a Saturday, for example—the child will not take her breast for milk on the preceding day. Never. Every time the mother has tried, from the age of forty days when I baptized the child, she has seen that the child would not nurse the day before receiving Holy Communion. As soon as the child had received Holy Communion, it would nurse again. Such children are blessed from their mother’s womb.

An unbelieving mother would run about making a spectacle in the neighborhood, trying anything to make her darling child eat. She refuses to let him remain hungry, lest he begin chewing on his hands afterward. Yet fasting is the finest—what do foreigners call it?—hors d’oeuvre, the finest appetizer. The Hodja fed onions to his dog, but only after leaving it hungry for ten days; then the dog snatched the onions out of the air. That is exactly how it is. Children today do not eat. They do not eat because we stuff them with food every day. That is precisely why they do not eat: we never let them fast. “Let this be the finest measure and rule of temperance,” he says: “to aim neither at indulgence nor at the harsh treatment of the flesh.” In other words, neither keep eating and eating, nor refuse the necessities of life until you end up in a sanatorium. Keep to the middle way, “avoiding excess in either direction.” Neither eat…

You should neither eat so much that the flesh is stirred up and leads you into harm, nor eat so little that you end up in a sanatorium. You must follow the middle way. That is why it is always good to have a discerning spiritual father who also fasts, so that he can understand us. For if he does not fast, he will be too indulgent with us, and we will not be able to enter properly into the discipline of fasting. Saint Isaac the Syrian offers a beautiful and wise teaching on this matter. He says: “A great pillar”—a pillar, that is, something firm and solid—“a great pillar of every good is fasting practiced with discernment.”

The holy Sixty-Ninth Canon of the Holy Apostles deposes a priest, a bishop, a deacon, a chanter, or a reader if he does not fast on Wednesdays and Fridays or during Great Lent; and it excommunicates a layman. But it adds a qualification: “unless prevented by bodily illness.” If someone is ill, he is excused. The Canon makes this concession because fasting does the same work that illness does. If illness is already present and you then add fasting on top of it, you may give the illness the final blow, send the person to the grave sooner, and commit a form of suicide. The bodily hardship we seek through fasting is already being produced by the illness. Therefore, when illness is present, fasting is set aside. Even if it is Great Friday, that makes no difference. Discernment is necessary. So, “A great pillar of every good is fasting practiced with discernment.”

“But whoever neglects it brings every good into disgrace.” Whoever is indifferent to fasting does this. “For fasting was the first commandment given to our nature from the beginning, as a safeguard against the knowledge of indulgence; and from that point came the fall of the creature formed by God.” What was that first commandment? “You shall not eat.” There was fasting in Eden: “You shall not eat.” The Giver said this to the first human beings. The command, “You shall not eat from the tree, from the wood,” was a fast. He did not tell them not to pass near it, not to sit in its shade, or not to look at it. He told them not to eat. It was a matter of food. And what did those who ate accomplish? They cast us out. What, then, must we do to return? We must do what they failed to do and thereby caused our expulsion: we must fast. Basil the Great says this plainly.

He says: “Fasting was ordained in Paradise. Adam received the first commandment: ‘You shall not eat.’ The words ‘You shall not eat’ are the law of fasting. If Eve had fasted from the tree, we would not now need this fast. She did not fast, and we were cast out. Let us fast, so that we may return to Paradise.” These are essential things, but they must be practiced with discernment, properly and sensibly, without causing harm. We must not go to one extreme, because the human being is like a furnace: when you keep pouring in fuel—oil and gasoline—it will burn both you and everyone around you. But neither should you deprive it to the point of exhaustion and send it to the sanatorium. Everything should be moderate, orderly, and carefully measured. All this flows from the teaching of this great Saint whom we commemorate today. And I pray to the Holy God

that His grace may help us to possess the true faith, temperance, and meekness. These are essential for the Kingdom of Heaven, if we desire one day to find Saint Nicholas there above, where we too shall go, whether we wish it or not—somewhere.

Πού είναι; Αν εξετάσουμε τους εαυτούς μας πρώτα ή τους ανθρώπους του περιβάλλοντός μας, που είναι γύρω μας, και λοιπά, ή γενικότερα τον κόσμο, θα βρούμε ότι δεν υπάρχει πίστη ορθή. Κανών, ξέρετε τι θα πει εν προκειμένω;

Χρησιμοποίησε το στόμα σου και έδωσε τον σωστό ορισμό τού ποιος είμαι εγώ. Ώστε το θέμα είναι όχι εκείνο που λέμε εμείς: «Πιστεύεις; Βεβαίως, κάτι υπάρχει». Τι είναι αυτό που υπάρχει; Άλλος το λέγει ανωτέρα δύναμη. Άλλος λέγει: «Κάποιο ανώτερο ον υπάρχει, κάτι υπάρχει». Άλλος λέγει, ο Ιεχωβίτης: «Υπάρχει ο Ιεχωβά». Άλλος λέγει, ο Προτεστάντης: «Ο Χριστός». Ο Ορθόδοξος: «Ο Χριστός». Ποιος Χριστός; Είναι ο ίδιος ο Χριστός του Προτεστάντου, ο ίδιος ο Χριστός του Ορθοδόξου;

Στο εξωτερικό σήμερα υπάρχουν περίπου δύο χιλιάδες παραφυάδες που ομιλούν γύρω από το Ευαγγέλιο του Χριστού όλο. Ποιος τον έχει τον Χριστό; Χριστός είναι ένας. Τι είδους Χριστό έχουνε; Δεν ξέρετε, στην Αμερική υπάρχει δορυφόρος επάνω, ο οποίος δορυφόρος εκπέμπει σε ολόκληρη την Αμερική, και οι τηλεοράσεις εκεί, όλο το 24ωρο, όταν ανοίξεις ή το 15 κανάλι ή το 21, έχεις περιστατικά κάποιας αιρέσεως που να μιλάει για τον Χριστό, όλο το 24ωρο. Ποιος είναι ο Χριστός τώρα, ο σωστός; Ποιος έχει τον πραγματικό Χριστό;

«Από τότε που της έβγαλα την Αγία Τριάδα από το κεφάλι είναι δικιά μου. Κάθομαι εγώ στο κεφάλι της». Έλεγε σ' έναν ιερέα το δαιμόνιο, σε ένα μοναστήρι, ένα πρωινό. Γιατί φώναζε μέσα και λέει: «Καλώς τις αδελφούλες μου, καλώς». «Ποιες είναι οι αδελφούλες;» Και έπειτα στον καταρράκτη είδαν, κατέβαιναν δύο και έφτασαν εκεί. Και λέει: «Αυτές είναι οι αδελφές μου». «Ποια είναι η Αγία Τριάδα που έβγαλε;» Και ήταν οι κοτσίδες. Τα τρία. «Από τότε», λέει, «που το έκοψα», λέει, «και το έβγαλα αυτό, κάθομαι εγώ εκεί απάνω, εκεί». Σήμερα έτσι, αύριο αλλιώς, έτσι, έτσι, άλλη έτσι, άλλη έτσι. Πού να τα πιστέψουμε εμείς αυτά και πού να τα προσέξουμε εμείς αυτά, όπως αυτές τις μέρες που λέμε για τη νηστεία και λοιπά. Η νηστεία τη φτιάξανε. Ποιος την έφτιαξε τη νηστεία; Σαν ποιος την έφτιαξε τη νηστεία; Ποιοι τη φτιάξανε τη νηστεία; Την έφτιαξαν οι άνθρωποι;
