Summary

Drawing on Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite, the lecture argues that Christians fall into grave sin because they forget the promises made at Baptism. Parents bear primary responsibility for teaching children the faith through prayer, spiritual reading, church life, moral instruction, and consistent personal example. Education and material success are valuable only when joined to faith in Christ, who alone gives lasting meaning, joy, and warmth to human life.

This evening I wanted to share a few thoughts that may be of help more generally in the struggle we undertake as Christians.

A question occurs to me in speaking with many people: since sin is evil and results in the loss of a person’s soul, how is it that we sin—and often mortally? A person may commit what they call a venial sin: he lost his temper, hurt someone, or, let us say, ate something he should not have eaten at a particular time. These are considered venial sins. But how can someone commit mortal sin while at the same time calling himself an Orthodox Christian and claiming that his household is Christian?

Consider all his outward expressions of faith: he goes to Church, receives Holy Communion from time to time—perhaps on the great feasts—and has an icon corner in his home, and so on. How can these things be reconciled with his committing sin, even mortal sin? Have you ever wondered about this? Yes, we sin—but why do we sin? What is the cause? Why do we sin? Listen to an opinion I came across, which I will share with you. It is from Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite. He says: “The reason Christians today fall into the evil works of the devil, and especially...”

“...into mortal sins, even going so far as sorcery”—and by sorcery we mean handing another person over to the devil—“is that they do not reflect upon those first promises they made to Christ when they were baptized.” Do you see where he directs our attention? A confession was made when we became Christians. We gave a promise, and through this Christ freed us from the burden of ancestral sin, enrolled us among His own, and made it possible for us to be called Christians. But if we revoke that promise, abandon it, and cease to pay attention to the promise we gave...

then we cease to be Christians. That is the reason. Most of us do not know what we promised at that time through the person of our godparent, who undertook it on our behalf. The godparent did not tell us afterward or watch over us in accordance with what he had promised. He himself did not know what he said, what he promised, or what responsibilities he assumed. And those of you who were present at the Mystery of Baptism, who were given a little witness ribbon because you had witnessed an agreement—a covenant made between man and God—showed no further concern. How, then, is a person today to know what was said on his behalf?

He does not understand the faith or the responsibilities that come with being called a Christian, and so he sins as though nothing were happening. At our Baptism, the central matter was the person of Christ and the person of Satan. Satan was presented as exercising dominion over us, and the moment had come for us to abandon everything belonging to Satan and unite ourselves with Christ. If a person could stand there consciously, with the fear of God and with eyes opened by God, beside the place where the catechesis and exorcisms are performed so that Satan may depart from the child’s heart, he would shudder. He truly would shudder.

As he spoke those words, the mother would not imagine that she was holding an angel; she would think she was holding a little dragon, male or female, and she would beseech Christ to free the child as quickly as possible from Satan’s influence. Then, on the basis of the promises made, she would continually remember the responsibilities assumed from the day of Baptism onward. Very striking are the words spoken to Christ: “I renounce Satan, O Lord, and all his company and all his worship”—that is, everything associated with him, all its manifestations. For, as you know, Satan has his own staff and his own band of workers.

He has his own dens, while Christ has His own. The person unites himself with Christ, with His company and His worship, and spits upon Satan—“Ptoo, ptoo, ptoo”—three times. Then he turns, unites himself with Christ, and assumes this entire responsibility. Satan has many things that belong to him, and an inattentive person serves Satan without realizing it. “I am a Christian,” he says, “but surely I can play a hand of cards.” To whom do cards belong—to God or to Satan? They belong to Satan. However much you may want to call them God’s, you cannot. However much you may want to absolve Satan, they still belong to Satan. They steal your time. You squander the fruit of your labor.

You blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ, and often quarrel over the game. You take another person’s money, the fruit of his labor, and so forth. You are a thief and a robber. You collude with someone else. Do these things not happen in card games? Of course they do. “I am killing time,” you say. But is time some Beast for you to kill? Have you really found a way to kill it? Are you not mocking Christ? When you take the jack into your hand, do you know that you are holding Christ in your hand? When you take the king, do you know that you are holding God the Father? When you take the queen, do you know that you are mocking the Most Holy Theotokos? When you take the suit of swords, diamonds, and the rest, do you know that this represents the Precious Cross? Should you not know these things? Then learn that this is how it is: this whole business belongs to Satan. And when you barely have time to swallow your last mouthful, eating it on the road as you hurry to the racetrack—to whom does that belong?

Does it belong to Christ? No, it belongs to Satan. You get up to go to the stadium, where the blazing sun or the rain beats down upon you; who knows how much you pay, what blasphemies you utter, and what things you hear. What are these things? Do they belong to God? They do not. And when you take another man’s wife, or another woman’s husband, does that mean nothing? To whom do such things belong? Yet at Baptism you swore and confessed that you would do none of the things Satan commands, and that you would belong exclusively to Christ. Christ claims us entirely as His own. They say He is very jealous. But Christ is jealous for your good. As the Old Testament says, Christ is indeed a jealous God. If, for example, a bridegroom wants his bride to belong wholly to him, is that wrong?

A bride wants her bridegroom to belong wholly to her, not to be shared among four, five, or ten others. Is that wrong? How, then, can you say that you are a Christian when you are working on Satan’s construction site? And when something happens to you, how can you cry, “My Most Holy Theotokos! My Christ!” Seriously—why do you not cry, “My devil”? After all, that is where you work; it is his voice you obey and his road you follow. How can you now come here asking for help? Yet where do people not seek help? Let me put it this way: we have political parties today, do we not? Suppose I support New Democracy and constantly insult PASOK. Can I then go to PASOK, while they know that I support New Democracy, and expect them to assist me? Will they assist me? These are simple, everyday comparisons, of course, but they may have a broader value by helping us understand the matter. This, then, is what that holy man of recent times, Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite, says.

For the most part, a person forgets his promise. That is why he comes to serve Satan without realizing it and may even go so far as to commit mortal sin. And we commit no small number of mortal sins. Each of us must therefore understand this and stop to reflect: What did I promise before, and what am I doing now? Certainly there are many excuses, but none of them stands firm, because Christ is ready to help a person in his weakness and in his fall. He is ready—but we behave as though none of that mattered and as though the promise were no longer binding. A person grows a little and reaches ten, twelve, thirteen, or fifteen years of age. At Baptism he said, “I renounce Satan.”

That was then; now he says, “I renounce Christ.” They do not want to go to Church; they do not want Christ; they do not want God. Just the other day, a fifteen-year-old boy said, “We will make all of you atheists. We will wipe out your God.” A child of fifteen had sunk to such depths. He does not want Him. Yet a confession was once made. It was spoken, it was preserved, and it was engraved within him from his Baptism. But he has piled things upon that conscience—stones and earth upon a conscience once watered and illumined—and now no light shines from it. Through egotism and sin, it is as though a blackened glass lamp has formed around his soul. The light is still there, but it does not shine. That lamp glass must be cleaned so that...

it may once again be seen that the light of Christ is within him and shines for all. Yet he begins by saying, “I do not want Christ.” Why do you deny Christ? Because He goes against my flesh, against my ego, against my fashion and my self-interest. So you renounce Christ and unite yourself with Satan. What does Satan offer you? Christ asks for virginity. “Virginity? The devil does not ask for virginity, so I will go with him.” Christ says yes, so I will go with the one who says no. Christ commands fasting, so I will go with the devil, who does not want fasting—and so on. What, then, will happen in such a case? Who is at fault? The person who denies his promise is at fault: “I renounce You, Christ, and I unite myself with you, Satan.” Whatever spiritual state death finds a person in, that state will continue into eternity.

Some people say that Hell and Paradise are already here. Hell begins here, and Paradise begins here. Wherever the photographic lens of death captures each person—and today there are many modern ways for someone to depart from this present life—there he will remain in eternity. It is therefore necessary for each person at least to consider the confession that was made and gradually strive to live by it. If our steering wheel has turned too far to the left, we must turn it back toward the center. Or if it has turned too far to the right through egotism, we must straighten it. Neither left nor right. We must neither be indifferent and do nothing, nor imagine ourselves to be something great. Whatever we are, we are in Christ. This is the right path.

Christ can help a person.

After these words and reflections, we might add the following: if we have reached the point—and are rapidly moving farther—of denying everything and saying that nothing exists, this is due in large measure to the fact that, from childhood, we were not taught at home through both words and example. A mother tells her daughter to go to Church, but she herself does not go. She tells her to pray, but she herself does not pray. A father tells his son to do something, but he does not do it himself. And children, who learn more from what they see than from what they hear...

follow the example before them. No religious book was ever read in the home, not even when the children were small. Very well, now they have grown and will not sit and listen. But when they were small and still under their parents’ watchful eye, was a passage ever read at the table? On little Nicholas’s feast day, the feast of Saint Nicholas, was anything about the Saint ever read? Does the child know his troparion? Nothing. Not even one conversation took place. There were birthdays, name days, birthday celebrations, anniversaries of Baptism, and all the usual festivities. But there was never a spiritual conversation even about the person of the child’s own patron Saint.

What did the child hear at home? Nothing. And now you expect him to learn the faith from the teacher he hears at school, to respect you, to take God seriously, and to labor for his soul? No. This work must be done in the home. That is why children often have mitigating circumstances. In the course of this small ministry, I have met many people, and when I finally asked them, “How did you come to this point?” they answered, “No one ever told me anything.” How did one woman fall into such a wretched state? She said, “Since my mother brought every boyfriend of hers into the next room, what else was I supposed to do, Mr. Panagopoulos?” They had neither instruction nor example. What else could they do? How often today a mother...

gets out of a taxi to enter one house while her daughter goes into the house farther down, and afterward they return together to their own home. What do you expect to happen when there is neither a good example nor moral instruction? Some say, “What can small children understand when you read such things to them?” Yet they expect them to understand Mickey Mouse and every other diabolical thing. Those things, apparently, they can understand.

Then neither baptize the child nor bring the child to Holy Communion, since the child does not understand! But you and I understand, and this sanctification takes place on our behalf. Know that these impressions, received both through hearing and through sight, are inscribed...

...in a kind of sacred script upon the souls of children. A child’s soul is a blank sheet of paper that Christ places in your hands and entrusts to your care. Who will be the first to write on that paper? Christ must write on it first; then let Satan come afterward and try to erase it or write over what is already there. But this early formation, this kind of care, is absent among parents; it was absent among our own parents as well. Then the children go out into the neighborhood and off to school, where they may hear the religion teacher end the lesson with these words: “Well, children, we have said what we had to say...”

“Do you think I myself believe what I have just told you? Do I believe it? I am a teacher, and I am required to tell you what the religion textbook says, but I am telling you plainly that I do not believe any of it.” And now you expect your child to learn about God and acquire the things that are essential alongside the rest of his education. Education is from God, and science is from God. But you must not remove God and leave science alone in His place. There is room for both—for God and for science. Indeed, when the two are present together, they are a great inheritance. So you must prepare beforehand. “But I do not know how.” Then you are obliged to learn. Of course, the way a person should enter Holy Matrimony—and whether he should enter it at all—is another subject.

The responsibilities involved are another subject. For this is not simply a matter of bringing two human beings into the world and then turning them loose. They are not chickens, turkeys, or rabbits. They are human beings, and your first obligation is not merely to provide a piece of bread and some clothing, but to care for their souls. You are obliged to be properly prepared. You must find some way to help them: through what you read to them, through what you know and can tell them, through your prayers, or by inviting others to come and speak so that your children may hear something worthwhile. A person has this obligation. Yet if you look at children’s libraries, with few exceptions, you will usually find no religious books. They contain all kinds of other good books—and I have nothing against them, for they too can be beneficial—but they develop only one side...

...the side concerned with the world, career choices, and so forth. All of that is good and worthy. All this secular learning is good and worthy. But the other side remains empty, and when that side is empty, you are building on sand. You accomplish nothing. If you form a human being without God, you are forging a double-edged knife, and it will cut both those outside the home and those within it. You parents will not escape either. Once the child has a firm grip on that knife, you will be the first to suffer the consequences. This responsibility, then, hangs over the neck of every person. It is another matter if my father gives me the foundations he ought to give me and I then reject them. You should know that a person who, from his very first steps, heard...

...about the things of God, even before he could consciously grasp them in his soul and mind, will retain them. No matter how deeply they are later buried beneath the flesh, pride, unbelief, the world, self-interest, or the devil, a time will come when all these coverings fall away and what was there from the beginning emerges again. Go and look at an archaeological excavation. Go to Spata. They begin digging, for example, to build a house, and beneath the ground they discover mosaics of incalculable value that had lain covered for many years. They were there all along; other things had fallen over them, and now those things are cleared away. Look at what they found at Vergina. What did they not discover there, beneath everything that had accumulated above it? Yet those treasures had always been there.

The truths are always there. They belong to Christ. They are a city set on a hill. A cloud of dust may descend, a great swelling may cover them, and so forth; but one day all of that will pass away, and what lies beneath will be found again. They buried Christ at Golgotha and heaped all manner of things over the place. I do not know how many of you have been counted worthy to go down into the underground chamber where Saint Helen found the Holy Cross. Tell me, where did they find it? Deep down beneath the ground. Do not ask where they found it; ask what had been piled on top of it. A temple of Aphrodite stood above it, and three hundred and twenty-five years had passed. Yet it came to light. That is how these things will also come to light. Nothing you tell a child will be lost, nor will the times when you take the child beside you while still young and pray together. All these impressions will remain in the child’s subconscious and will follow their course...

The flu runs its course, and then one goes to the doctor. These impressions too will follow their course—just wait. Youth will run its course like the flu. Young people will grow weary and return, because deep within them there always remains that work of art fashioned by the grandmother, the grandfather, or the mother while the child sat on her knees. Saint Nektarios of Aegina sat at his grandmother’s feet, and she taught him the words, “Have mercy on me, O God.” There, at his grandmother’s feet, his mouth was opened, and he would continue as far as the words, “I shall teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall return to You.” All this happened at his grandmother’s feet. It is true that today we no longer have such grandmothers, and we shall be held accountable. We shall be held accountable. But we still have...

...some who are simple and good. So this is an extremely serious matter: catechesis during the early years is missing. That is why the work becomes so difficult afterward. You must begin from nothing. There is nothing beneath the surface that you can uncover and find again; you must build from the ground up. Saint Gregory the Theologian says the following concerning what we have been discussing: “While a person is still young, he must learn to fear God, before surrendering himself to evil.” He means that you must speak to a person about God from his earliest years, before he gives himself over to evil, sin, the flesh, and so forth.

“Before the great and fearful day of God comes.” You must act in time, he says, so that the great and fearful day does not overtake that person—the Day of Judgment—because we shall be called to account. The Apostolic Constitutions also say: “You shall not remove your hand from your son.” You must not withdraw your hand; it must always remain over him, like the sword of Damocles. Forget those educational theories that say, “Let the child do whatever he wants,” because tomorrow he will strike you on the head. “You shall not remove your hand from your son or your daughter, but from their youth you shall teach them the fear of God, reverence for God.” Discipline them.

Educate them, educate them, educate them—“for the soul of your children; thus you shall have good hope.” Then, he says, the child will be ready to receive sound formation. I repeat that the child may stray and go his own way. The current is so powerful that the child himself and his parents will need great strength and much prayer for him to remain on the right path. He must pass through a coal yard: even if he is not blackened with soot, he will certainly be stained with pitch. Yet he will know where to turn after a fall. He will know what lies behind him and what awaits him. But if you make no such effort and concern yourself only with educating him—or rather, deforming him—what will he do? How will he know where to turn? How will he know, in difficult moments...

...how to discern whether something is sin or not? This, then, is work that must be done by the older generation for the younger, so that afterward we may have something like a nursery in which new life can grow. Concerning these matters we have been discussing, the divine John Chrysostom says in his own way: “I have told you before that the reason the evil in the world is so difficult to uproot”—you cannot uproot the world’s evil from the world—“is that no one takes thought for his children. No one speaks with them about purity, self-control, contempt for money...

...or glory, and no one speaks to them about the divine commandments contained in Holy Scripture.” This, he says, is why today you cannot uproot the world’s evil from within a person and bring him back to the right path. At home he heard nothing about purity. There was no discussion of virginity and chastity, of why God established the bodily boundary of virginity in men and women but not in animals, birds, or reptiles, or of how a person will be called to account if he transgresses that boundary unlawfully. No such discussion takes place. Indeed, many unbelieving parents facilitate and assist in their children’s corruption because they imagine that if their children live chastely, they will not be normal but abnormal.

They actually encourage their children toward corruption, supposedly on rational grounds. Sadly, one part of what is wrongly called science also embraces these ideas. But these people have never tasted the joy of purity, or the strength and blessing God gives through it. They have never reflected on the virginal Jesus, His Virgin Mother, the virgin John the Forerunner, the virgin John the Theologian, or the many other virgins. They have not. How can a person who has never heard anything about purity or self-control, either at home or elsewhere, become self-controlled, honorable, and moral? How can he learn contempt for money when, from early childhood...

...he is taught only how to make money, as though happiness and long life depended entirely upon securing wealth, and as though money were the sole purpose of life today? This is perhaps an affliction, a mistake that befalls people who go abroad. Those who leave here for a foreign country, wherever they may go, do not go there for the faith; they go for dollars. You can therefore understand what happens to them. They may trample everything underfoot and become indifferent to everything, provided they make some money, imagining that happiness lies behind that money and that money is everything. I do not know whether you noticed something similar in our recent discussion, when I said that even if one person possessed all the gold in the banks...

...and in every treasury, his lips would never smile if he lacked Christ. Christ is the One who gives a person a smile and true assurance. Even if one person could possess every radiator in the world, his soul could not be warmed if he had no relationship with Christ. Let him do whatever he wishes. Are there any people more miserable than the rich who do not have Christ? Christ is the One who makes every material thing in this world useful and gives it its proper value. Therefore, if from childhood you teach a child almsgiving, teach him to love the poor, and take care never to accept any money he brings home—or even a piece of candy—if he has stolen it, then you teach him to reject easy gain and all such things.

If a child does not learn these things at home, then outside the home the rule is, “Your death is my life.” Yet, as you know, we ourselves often commit injustice. My own child must not fail the grade merely because he is a little blockhead, must he? An uncle of mine once said of his own son, “Koropi is famous for the little bricks it produces.” He was speaking about his own son. Yes, “it is famous,” he said.

So what happens? Because I have connections, I approach this or that politician, and another child is treated unjustly—a child who rightfully deserves the place because he worked hard, passed the examinations, and so forth. My own child, my own little roof tile, is raised above him. I try to push him forward in this way, supposedly to “make a man of him.” Is that what a human being is? He is already becoming a beast. He takes his place upon another person’s sweat, position, and blood. Thank you.

A father’s own conduct matters as well. These are details that often escape us, and we imagine that we are doing good and providing for our children. We are not. Teach the child to despise money—not to become destitute if that can be avoided, but not to become rich within two years either. Let him work as we worked. I have been working for fifty or sixty years. I have been on the stage, working, since I was nine years old, right up to this day. Why should he not work? Why should everything be handed to him ready-made? Why should I teach him to seek easy gain? That is not right, honorable, moral, or good for him. Tomorrow, when a difficult moment comes, he will be unable to endure it. John Chrysostom says these lessons are not taught in the home. Glory, honor, and similar things only inflate the child’s mind. The divine John Chrysostom says these lessons have not been given at home; the children never learned them. Allow me to read this passage once more. In a certain way, I am very fond of it.

“I have said before,” he tells us, “that the reason the evil in the world is so difficult to uproot”—it cannot be removed from within a person—“is that no one takes thought for his children; no one speaks with them,” sitting down to discuss and explain these things. Of course, Satan presents the father and mother as enemies of the child, because the father or mother will say no where a friend, a neighbor, or someone else will say yes. The child prefers the latter because it is an easy road that gratifies the flesh, the ego, and whatever else. But the father must pray and say, “My God, be with me in what I am about to tell my child.” Or he should simply say what must be said and leave it there: “I am not telling you this because I can force you to act on it. I am obliged to tell you. If you encounter these things later, remember that this teaching also exists.” You must say something. You must show some concern.

Is it enough simply to educate a child? You may turn him into a fine-looking doll, but one without virtues, without inner spiritual strength. This cultivation takes place in the garden called the home. The first church is not the parish church, the church building; it is the home. The home is the church in the house. For if there is no church in the house, there will be no Church in society, because those who go there will be beasts. The aim is for the father at home to fulfill the role of Christ, the mother that of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the children that of the Saints. In this way, the atmosphere of the home will produce good and useful citizens both for this world and for Heaven. For a morally formed person is indispensable to society today. Many times we go somewhere and find someone willing to help us.

Someone feels compassion for us because we have gone there once or twice. He sees our age and our work, and he helps us. At once, without even thinking, we say, “Glory to God that we found a true human being! Blessed is your mother; blessed is your father.” Look at what they said about our Christ and about His mother when Christ was speaking: “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You.” But what do people say today about our own children? “Curse your mother! You came and took away the mother of my children; you took away the father of my children. Curse your mother!” This is what people out in the world, consumed with pain, so often say. Our door opens, and beasts come out. Hyenas come out—not children, not human beings. Why? Because the home was not the workshop that could shape something and send good and useful citizens out into society. It is not only Heaven that needs them. Here on earth, too, we need good, useful people—people of sound character. And no education of any kind can form

a true human being unless that person also has Christ within. Were those young people not educated who, some years ago in Kolonaki, were involved in that case where a man seized his girlfriend and threw her out of a window? Was he not a doctor or a university student? And was she not a university student too? Yet he threw her down. Was the man at Achladokampos not educated—the one who stabbed his girlfriend thirty-seven times and threw her into a ditch? Were these people not educated? What good was their education? They did not have Christ. And when a person does not have Christ, if he sees a sharp knife, woe to you—you are lost. The more educated he is, the greater a beast he may become. Christ is the One who puts everything in its proper place. This does not mean that education is unnecessary—do not misunderstand me. But education must be joined to Christ so that it may become useful. These are the things, he says, that should be discussed and cherished in the home. That is where they must begin. Of course, we ourselves did not have parents like this.

Our parents did not have the knowledge and resources to help us; they had not been helped by their own parents, and so on. In this way, the condition we are discussing is perpetuated. You know, for the most part, both the child and we ourselves are inclined toward a comfortable life. And we are swept away by so-called entertainments. Yet if a person were a Christian, he would be inwardly full. Because he is empty, because there is a void within him, he turns to so-called entertainment. Since he does not have Christ within, he feels this emptiness and needs to hear something from outside himself in order to pass certain moments pleasantly.

One turns to drugs, another to the flesh, another to gambling, and another to who knows what, simply to let off steam and amuse himself for a while. Then, when the effect wears off, he suffers twice as much, feels twice the sorrow, and is left with twice the darkness within. Only when a person has a relationship with Christ does he feel inwardly full. He does not need to go to Satan’s haunts to borrow a little joy, to let off steam, to feel something, or to be “entertained,” as he calls it. For that is not recreation of the soul; for the most part, it is the destruction of the soul. This is what many places and means of entertainment really are. All the snares are set there, and destruction begins there.

Look into the lives of the young people who end up as robbers, and of many other youths. That is where they begin—in places considered centers of entertainment. Neilos the Wise offers this judgment on the matter: “What people call ‘entertainment’ or ‘recreation’ in theaters, for example, at horse races, and in other haunts of Satan is not entertainment at all, but great ruin and harm to the soul. If you truly wish to find wholesome recreation, go regularly to Church; hasten to the hermitages of the monks, and there you will truly find great consolation and profound healing for the pains of your heart.” Indeed, a person has problems, concerns, and troubles. They are not solved by going somewhere to forget them. You must go and speak about them so that they may be resolved.

It is true that if a person seeks to resolve such matters in God’s way, he resolves them at the root. The other solutions are only half measures, are they not? Suppose I have a toothache because the tooth is rotten and must be removed. I take aspirin, and for a moment or two the pain subsides, but the tooth is not healed. The true remedy lies elsewhere; it requires another kind of treatment, and I must go somewhere else to receive it.

Something similar happens here. For example, he says, “Hasten to the hermitages.” This man belonged to that earlier age. Yet see how many people would run with their problems to men of God. Today, in difficult moments, we go to a medium for answers. We go to a woman who reads coffee grounds or to a fortune-teller who reads cards, when we ought to go to people illumined by the grace of the Holy Spirit. We men, for example, can go to the Holy Mountain, where there are people able to help every kind of nous, every level of education, every social position, and every state of wretchedness. Every problem can be resolved there. These men possess wisdom in every field. The simplest little monk will give you an answer in two sentences that untangles the whole snare Satan has woven around you and that may have brought you to the brink of suicide.

God will speak to you through that person. This does not mean that God cannot speak to you here, but you would become proud, thinking that you speak directly with God. You must go and let Him speak to you through another person. And when He can speak to you through a person, He will not speak either directly or through an angel, so that you may be humbled. I do not know whether you remember something I once told you about a hieromonk who lived alone on an island. Because he celebrated the Divine Liturgy every day, God sent him an angel each day to assist him—to help him during the Proskomedia, with the chanting, and with everything else a priest needs in order to serve the Divine Liturgy. One day, a monk visited that island.

On the day the monk visited him, no angel came to serve the hieromonk. Instead, the monk came and assisted him. He went to stand beside him, took the lists, and began reading the names so that they could perform the Proskomedia. He watched the elder as he prepared the Holy Gifts. The elder took the prosphoron, removed the Lamb, and placed it on the diskos. Then he cut out the portion for the Most Holy Theotokos and set it in place. At that point the monk stopped him and said, “Geronta, may I have your blessing to say something?” “Go ahead,” the elder replied. “The portion of the Theotokos does not go where you are placing it. You are putting it on the left; it should go on the right.” “I know what I am doing,” the elder told him. “But did you not just say, ‘The Queen stood at Your right hand’? Is that not what you said, even though you placed her portion here?” “I know, I know what I am doing.”

How did he know? He thought, “An angel serves me.” The visiting monk did not know that the elder had an angel assisting him every day. “An angel serves me. If this were wrong, would he not have told me?” “May it be blessed,” the other monk replied. “Since you know, I withdraw what I said.” This is how a person should respond, without quarreling or making a fuss. “May it be blessed. May God protect you.” They celebrated the Divine Liturgy, spent the day together, and in the evening the visitor departed. The next morning, as the elder began the service again, the angel returned. But what the little monk had said the day before was still troubling him. When they reached the point where he was to place the portion, he held it in his hand and asked the angel, “Where should this go—here or here?”

“There, on the right,” the angel replied. “I have been placing it on the left all this time while you have been coming here. Why did you never tell me?” “My Lord did not send me to teach you; He sent me to serve you. To teach you—and to humble you—He sent you a man yesterday, and that man told you where it belongs.”

This is one particular reason God often does not answer us directly. It is not that He cannot, but that we may humble ourselves before other people. Yes, this is the wisdom of God. In former times, people with problems would cross deserts to find someone who could speak to their hearts. And when no such person could be found, then, as the popular saying goes, even the wall would speak. One man had no one to ask, and people would say, “He asked his staff,” or, “He asked the wall.” It is a different matter with us if, because of pride, we refuse to ask. If people were willing to follow the path I am describing, we would resolve many difficulties and many problems. We have problems. Pray.

Go and ask a man of God. You will receive an answer you did not expect, and at once you will feel consolation within. Hold fast to that answer. God may not bring about what was said at that very moment; He may bring it about a little later or further down the road. But the answer you received is the answer. Do not rush off to ask someone else, and then another, because you will hear a different answer. God answers according to a person’s condition and disposition at that moment. At one moment, Nineveh must be destroyed. Nineveh changes, and now Nineveh must not be destroyed. God also changes His response. According to a person’s disposition, God’s response also changes. A person must know these things and must offer help in all such circumstances.

Children today have many mitigating circumstances, including the fact that we adults did not do what we should have done. So, to return to where we began, Saint John Chrysostom wrote these things in his own age—and therefore people then were facing the same condition we face today, the same evil of our present state. If, he says, it is so difficult to uproot this root of evil from within a person, it is because no effort is made to teach children the things of God from an early age. Then all the scorching fire of Satan comes upon them, seizes them, and turns them into outright antichrists. Where, then, can you begin with such a person? What can you say to him? What foundation can you stand on?

You have to prove everything to him. This does not mean that one cannot speak about these things to adults or to those who are indifferent. But your words will find a better response if the people before you have something beneath the surface, even if circumstances—or their own neglect—have covered it over. Now, other thoughts arise that may also be relevant here. In fact, I was speaking with a woman who was having problems with her children, and at one point she spoke to me about the devil. “You see,” she said, “it is the devil.” I replied, “Not simply the devil, but we together with the devil.” Would you not agree, I asked her, that this is the better way to put it?

We too like what the devil suggests to us. We like it. Therefore, he is the dancing master, while we are the dancers who carry out his instructions—and both we and the devil will go together: “Depart with the devil and his angels.” He gave the orders and you carried them out; so there you are—go together, both of you. Let us not place all the blame on the devil. As you know, the devil may be the cause of evil, but he is not the one who carries it out. We are the ones who carry it out. Take the first sin as an example. How did that first sin occur? Was it entirely Satan’s doing? No. Let us be fair. In fact, I have found a particular passage on this subject, again from Saint John Chrysostom, who, in his own eloquent and divinely inspired way, puts the matter in its proper place.

What does he say? To put it simply, not all the evil should be attributed to the devil’s deceit; the woman also fell because she was overcome by her own desire. He is speaking about Eve. Let us not, he says, cast everything upon the devil and absolve ourselves of all responsibility. No, that is not how it is. And this applies to us as well, because sins occur in the same way. He makes the suggestion, we find it pleasing, and thus a partnership is formed, leading to perdition. It did not happen solely through his deceit; rather, “the woman fell because she was overcome by her own desire. And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasing to the eyes and desirable for gaining understanding, and”

“the woman took of its fruit and ate.” Yes, Satan spoke, but she examined the fruit, found its appearance pleasing, imagined that it would taste good, and ate. He did not force her. He did not draw a gun and say, “Do it.” Nor did he pick the fruit himself, force open her mouth, put it inside, seize her jaws, and make her chew it. No. He said, “If you eat this, you will become God. You will attain sooner what you are destined to become later; this is how you can attain it more quickly.” So she went along with him, and the very opposite happened. Yet she had entered into partnership with him. She liked what he told her; she stayed, discussed it, looked at the fruit, and did what she did. This is exactly how sins occur today. Satan is not solely to blame, though many people may say, “Oh, that Satan has devoured our children!”

“That Satan has devoured us! Oh, how we suffer because of Satan!” No—it is because of my own evil disposition and choice. Satan is poison, but even poison is used by medicine as a remedy. You have seen the special cabinets in pharmacies marked, “Caution: Poisons.” Poisons are kept inside, yet all of them can be used medicinally. Imagine going into a barbershop and seeing, among the other things, a stone. “What is this thing doing here, this great lump of rock? Throw it out!” Yes, but then where will we sharpen the razor so that we can shave you? It is sharpened on that stone. Satan is like this; this is how God makes use of him. Satan helps a person become holy. He helps a person become holy.

Satan can also contribute to a person’s damnation if we make the opposite use of him. The easy way? No. I will take the narrow path; I will not take the broad highway. Mister devil, I will not listen to you. If I listen to you, I am lost; if I do not, I am saved. It is in my hands. From this same mouth of mine come both breath and spittle. You are a burning coal: if I blow on you, you will start a fire; if I spit on you, you will be extinguished. It is in my hands. That is why we are guilty. And that is why He says, “Depart to the devil and his angels.” Someone once said, “Satan should pay for all this. He is the one God should call to account.” “Yes,” came the answer, “and so both of you will go.” We will go because he gave the orders and we carried them out. He will say, “I told you to go and kill that man, and you went and took everything he had. Who should pay, you or I?” “Both of us: you for sending me, and I for going.” That, he says, is what will happen with the devil and with you.

In any case, let us stop here for tonight. By the grace of God, let us hold on to whatever we can. And may God be our helper.

Βλαστημείς την Παναγία και τον Χριστό και κάνεις καβγάδες πολλές φορές επάνω στον... Κλέβεις του αλλουνού τα λεφτά, τον ιδρώτα του κ.λπ. Είσαι λωποδύτης, είσαι ληστής. Συνεννοείσαι με τον άλλον. Ή δεν γίνονται αυτά στο χαρτί; Γίνονται, πώς δεν γίνονται; «Σκοτώνω», λέει, «την ώρα μου». Μα θηρίο είναι η ώρα που τη σκοτώνεις; Εσύ βρήκες τον τρόπο να τη σκοτώσεις; Δεν εμπαίζεις τον Χριστόν; Όταν πιάνεις τον βαλέ στο χέρι σου, ξέρεις ότι έχεις τον Χριστόν στο χέρι; Όταν πιάνεις τον ρήγα στο χέρι σου, ξέρεις ότι έχεις τον Θεόν Πατέρα; Όταν πιάνεις την ντάμα στο χέρι σου, ξέρεις ότι εμπαίζεις την Παναγία; Όταν πιάνεις το σπαθί, το καρό και λοιπά και λοιπά, ξέρεις ότι είναι ο Τίμιος Σταυρός; Θα ξέρεις αυτά τα πράγματα, δεν θα ξέρεις; Μάθετε λοιπόν ότι έτσι είναι· είναι του Σατανά αυτό το πράγμα. Το ότι δεν προλαβαίνεις να φας την τελευταία μπουκιά, την τρως στον δρόμο για να πας στον ιππόδρομο, τίνος είναι εκείνο εκεί πέρα;

Του Χριστού; Είναι του Σατανά. Το σηκώνεσαι να πας στο γήπεδο και σε τρώει το λιοπύρι και η βροχή εκεί πέρα, και δεν ξέρω τι πληρώνεις και τι βλασφημίες λες και τα τέτοια ή τι ακούς. Τι είναι; Είναι του Θεού αυτά τα πράγματα; Δεν είναι. Το ότι παίρνεις τη γυναίκα του αλλουνού και παίρνεις τον άντρα της αλλουνής, αυτό δεν λέει τίποτα; Είναι τίνος αυτά; Δεν είναι; Ναι, όμως ορκίστηκες τότε, ομολόγησες ότι δεν θα κάνεις τίποτα από αυτά που λέει ο Σατανάς, και έτσι θα είσαι του Χριστού μονοπώλιο. Εμάς μας έχει, λένε, ορισμένους. Πολύ ζηλιάρης είναι. Για το καλό σου είναι ζηλιάρης ο Χριστός. Είναι αλήθεια, κατά την Παλαιάν Διαθήκην, ζηλότυπος ο Χριστός. Αν ένας, παραδείγματι, μνηστήρ θέλει τη μνηστή του εξ ολοκλήρου δική του, κάνει κακό;

Τα παιδιά σήμερα έχουν πολλά ελαφρυντικά, και ότι εμείς οι μεγάλοι δεν κάναμε εκείνο που πρέπει να κάνουμε. Αν λοιπόν, για να επανέλθω εκεί που ξεκινήσαμε, σήμερα και μέσα στον αιώνα —γιατί αυτά που γράφει ο Άγιος Χρυσόστομος είναι του τρίτου αιώνος— άρα αντιμετώπιζαν οι άνθρωποι κι αυτοί τότε αυτή την ίδια κατάσταση, τη σημερινή, την κακία της καταστάσεως της σημερινής. Αν, λέει, είναι δυσκολοκατόρθωτο να βγει από μέσα από τον άνθρωπο η ρίζα αυτή του κακού, αυτό είναι, λέει, διότι δεν υπάρχει ενδιαφέρον να μάθουν από μικρά τα πράγματα του Θεού. Και έρχεται όλο το κάβμα έπειτα του σατανά και τα πιάνει αυτά και τα κάνει καθαρούς αντιχρίστους. Ώστε πού θες να το αρχίσεις, τι να του πεις, πού να σταθείς;

Να του αποδείχνεις. Όχι ότι δεν μπορεί κανείς να ομιλεί για αυτά τα πράγματα και στους μεγάλους και στους αδιαφόρους, αλλά όμως θα βρει καλύτερη απήχηση εάν έχει μπροστά του ανθρώπους οι οποίοι έχουν στο υπέδαφος κάτι, αδιάφορο αν τα περιστατικά ή αυτοί δεν επρόσεξαν και τα έφραξαν. Τώρα, επάνω σε αυτές τις σκέψεις πάλι έρχονται άλλα που μπορούν να μπουν στη μέση. Μάλιστα, συγκεκριμένως μιλούσα με μια κυρία, η οποία και αυτή έχει προβλήματα με τα παιδιά της και λοιπά, και σε μια στιγμή μου μίλησε διά τον διάβολον. «Βλέπεις», μου λέει, «ο διάβολος». Λέω: «Όχι ο διάβολος, αλλά εμείς με τον διάβολο». Δεν θα σου άρεσε, λέω, αυτή η τοποθέτηση;
