Summary
The lecture presents the Orthodox Church as the indispensable spiritual hospital where Christ heals the wounds of both soul and body. Christians should pray persistently for estranged relatives, children, Church leaders, civil authorities, parents, and teachers, trusting God to lead them toward repentance. Authentic Orthodox faith must appear in concrete works such as worship, fasting, confession, Communion, reverence, moral discipline, and obedience to Christ’s commandments.

We Orthodox Christians must have a right understanding of our Church and of church attendance in general. It seems that many people want to believe they are Christians, even though they often do not attend Church—or, if they do, they attend in their own way. So I would like to offer a series of thoughts for all those who have not availed themselves of the Church. A person must take care.
He must take care concerning the Church and his attendance at its services. There is no person—apart from those who are not in their right mind—who, if asked whether he wants to go to Paradise, would say no. But if he is asked what he is doing to reach Paradise, how he is preparing, how he thinks, and how he conducts himself, we will find that he is not actually following the road that leads to Paradise. When a person becomes ill, he knows where the hospital is. When his body falls ill, he knows to seek a doctor and medicine; he undergoes treatment and often surgery, making use of whatever is offered to him. But when his soul is ill, what does he do?
The Church is the infirmary where the soul will be healed. Can a soul be healed outside the Church? It is impossible—impossible by its very nature. On his own, far from the Church, a person can do nothing about his sin. Just as the hospital, the doctor, and the medicines are all involved in healing an illness of the body, precisely the same is true of the soul. Christians above all must have a right understanding of this. There can be no compromise over attending Church, and no neglect of those Mysteries that heal the soul: metanoia, repentance, and confession.
This concerns those who are baptized, of course, because Baptism comes first. Metanoia, repentance, confession, and Holy Communion are indispensable for putting the soul in order. The soul, too, has its ulcers, its illnesses, and its weaknesses. It is affected by both the material and the spiritual worlds. It is affected by the world, by the flesh, by the ego, and by Satan. All these things heap ulcers and wounds upon the soul. They are healed only in the Church. Outside the Church, a person can accomplish nothing by himself.
This is what we see: people who have in some way set out toward Christianity, yet are still being battered on the shore and suffering there. They have not surrendered themselves; they have not gone in and let the sea—Christ—cover them, so that they may find rest. And so they continue to suffer. Why? Because they practice religion in their own way. If only a person knew what the Church is for his soul and for his body! For Christ, who is present and offered to us in the Church, is the physician of both soul and body. He also heals the body: a person feels different and is able to endure pain
and tribulation. Recently an acquaintance died who had been an unbeliever for many years. He died of cancer. I believe his fortieth-day memorial was today. He was in unbearable pain; neither morphine nor anything else helped. But when, in any event, God was pleased to bring about his final days, and the man confessed once, twice, three times and received Holy Communion two or three times, then each time he communed he felt no pain at all for two or three days. He himself noticed that whenever he received Holy Communion, he was free of pain for two or three days—without an injection, without anything. Our Christ is not only the physician of souls; He is also the physician of bodies.
He gives a person courage and a different kind of strength. The person feels that he has something to grasp and something to hold on to. He cannot find this outside the Church. Yes, in prayer you find consolation; in prayer you find an answer and feel a firm foundation within your soul. But when, by your own choice or through indifference, you live far from the Church, know this: the outcome will not be good. Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite says—and I have the passage here before me to read to you: “Christian brethren, go to Church, because the Church is a common infirmary for everyone.” It is not for only a few, because some people say, “What is offered in the Church...”
“What the Church teaches is not for us; it is for monks and priests.” No—the Church is a common infirmary. Monks, clergy, and laypeople all need the Church, which heals every sinner who has been wounded spiritually by the devil. All who are wounded spiritually by the devil are healed in the infirmary called the Church. Just as those who have bodily wounds are compelled to go to a doctor to have them treated—here he is speaking of physical wounds—
so that they do not die, in the same way Christians must go to the common infirmary called the Church. I have conveyed it to you in simple words. In the text, Saint Nicodemus says it in the language of his own time, but I have put it this way so that it may be understood. All our effort, then, must be directed toward this, both for ourselves and for those under our care,
and also for those who directly concern us: my husband, my wife, my children, my father, my brother, or whoever it may be. We must understand that, at all costs—and above all through our prayer—we must save that person and bring him into the Church.
From the moment a person comes into the Church, things will change. For someone to come to Church, he must be willing—just a little, the slightest bit; he does not need a great deal of willingness, because perhaps he comes under a kind of pressure, psychological pressure, I mean, and nothing else. Let him simply come and stand in the Church. Let him do nothing. Let his nous, his spiritual mind, be elsewhere, traveling abroad and even into the world beyond. When he leaves the Church, he will leave transformed. It is good, of course, for him truly to be present while he is in the Church—not merely present in his suit, but present with his soul as well. It is good for him to listen and ask, “What is the Church saying now? What is the Church asking of me now?” That is good. But to reach that point, a person must first begin; and he begins when he understands what the Church is and how greatly he needs her.
He also begins when those who wish to help him lead him, in some way, into the Church. My dear friends, do not try to resolve your problems—whether your own or those of your loved ones—far from the Church. Do whatever else you wish. Even if we suppose that you manage to give all the gold in the banks to your loved ones, if they have not been united with Christ, they remain wretched, and one day you may hear that they have taken their own lives. Even if you could gather every radiator in the world and try to bring warmth to a human soul far from the Church and from Christ, you would not succeed. Whatever you may try to do, you will not succeed.
The changes, the transformations, the complete alteration that Christ brings about in His Church happen nowhere else. I am deeply sorry to speak this way, but from my little experience I am compelled to say that most of us Orthodox, although we attend Church, do not know the Church’s value. We do not yearn for the Church. We do not come to Church from the evening before and again early in the morning. We do not stand within the Church as we should, and we do not partake fully of what the Church offers, so that this transformation may take place in us. When Moses remained near God for forty days on Mount Sinai...
he came down, and the Hebrews could not approach him. They told him to put a veil over his head and cover his face, because it shone so brightly that they could not draw near. You can read about these events in Exodus. And Moses had merely spoken with God and remained with Him in prayer. He did not receive God into himself; he did not eat God as we do. I do not know—perhaps my words are falling into empty space because you already live these things. Indeed, that is my prayer: that you may already be living what I am telling you, and that I am merely repeating it. But if, for one reason or another, you are not living these things, take heed!
Remember the words I am telling you. Make every effort you can, both for yourselves and for others, to live the life of the Orthodox Church, which alone possesses grace. The only Church that possesses the grace and power to transform the human person is the Orthodox Church. I have nothing personal against anyone. From this position, I am simply obliged to remind you that this is the heart of the matter. My purpose is not to tell you what happens in other churches, how they think, or what they do and do not possess. This alone is what I wish to say. Many parents are sorrowful—truly sorrowful in the fullest sense of the word—even though they have money and every comfort.
Although they have everything that could make their faces and lips smile, they are sorrowful and bitter. Why? Because their children have left them. And why have their children left them? As long as they remained close to the Church, their children remained close to them. But from the moment the children, for one reason or another, moved away from the Church, they also moved away from home, from their parents, from good habits, from respect, and so forth. This is why unbelief attacks the Church so fiercely: because the Church transforms people. They say, “The Church makes people fools.” So apparently, to be considered clever and not made a fool by the Church, I must come and take away your sister, your wife, or your husband...
I must take your wallet. But now my hand does not go into your pocket or your handbag; instead, it goes into my own pocket and my own bag and gives something to you. Does that mean the Church has made me a fool? This is what we have come to; this is where we have ended up. And this is why the Church is attacked. We have reached days when we shall weep.
In any event, with these opening thoughts I would ask you to labor in prayer. For when a person prays, Christ intervenes in a mysterious way; and for the sake of the one who is praying, He gives grace to someone who does not even ask to receive it, and so forth.
Satan goes and asks Christ for your child, for my child, for your husband, or for your wife. Why? Because that person lives in sin, lives far away, and has no desire to return. Satan demands, “Give him to me; he belongs to me. He does not fast, he exercises no self-restraint, he refuses to have children, he blasphemes You, and he does not want to come to You. He is mine. Let me tear him to pieces.” For if Christ abandoned us to him, Satan would tear us to pieces in a fraction of a second. Would anyone remain? Satan is a sadist. If anyone were handed over to him, no one would remain standing in this world.
What happens, then? Christ has compassion. His justice says that He should hand me over. What are we to do now, my Christ? I step in between. You step in between and raise your hands to Him: “Do not hand him over. Give him more time, give him another opportunity. Remember how we called upon You in that need, how I made that offering to You, how You saved him from that danger”—and you fall down before Him, pleading one thing after another. Then our Christ turns to Satan and says, “I will not hand him over to you.” Satan replies, “You are unjust.” Christ says, “I have seen those uplifted hands. Not that what you say is untrue, but for now I will not hand him over to you, because My mother is beseeching Me, My father is beseeching Me, My clergy are beseeching Me, and My Church is beseeching Me.” Do you understand what this means? My dear friends, through your prayers give Christ cause to intervene. Through your prayers give Christ cause to intervene. We shall weep, and then it will be far too late. When we weep then, our tears will be of no avail. Now, while we are alive, give Him cause!
Beseech Christ to find a way—one that He knows—to speak what is good to those who govern our Church, to those who govern the state, to parents, and to teachers. Give Christ an occasion through your prayer, because we are perishing. We must return to the Church. Christ knows the way. Let me give you an example that we experienced a few days ago: the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. How did God grant such grace? Did He ask the Most Holy Theotokos before she remained for eleven years—from the age of three—within the four walls of the temple, among the priests? Why did she not go and play with her little friends? Why did she not cling to her mother’s dress and try to leave? Who granted this little girl the grace to remain there?
For whose sake did He grant it? For the sake of her parents, who had said, “Give us a child, so that the curse of childlessness may be lifted from us, and we will give the child back to You.” It was granted, then, for the sake of her parents. And as for that grace and all that followed from it—try, if you can, to grasp who this young girl truly was. We must know these images, these events, these realities. “My Christ, help me with this. Most Holy Theotokos, help me with that. Saint John, help me with the other thing.” Then you will see the results. But because we Christians do not know the power of the Church, what takes place within her, or how a person is transformed and begins to think differently, we do not use the personal weapons given to us, which are called prayer.
Forgive me. If you think it right, include this in your daily rule, especially those of you who, for one reason or another, have not paid attention to it before. But from what we have been saying, another question arises. Someone—and perhaps many people—might say, “Mr. Panagopoulos, we see that only three percent of the population attends church. You know this. Statistics show that only three percent make use of the Church. There are millions of people here in Athens, are there not?”
“All the people who attend could fit inside ten churches; we simply do not go to Church. So are you really right? What about all those other people—so highly educated and mature? Do they not know what the Church teaches and what she can accomplish? And if these things are truly so, why do they not attend?” Do not let this scandalize you. This phenomenon was already being observed in the days of John Chrysostom, in the third century. He has homilies delivered after the great feasts, because people generally attend only on the three great feasts: Pascha, Christmas, and the Dormition of the Theotokos. After that, they are carried away like a wave of the sea—back to their work...
Back to the flesh, the world, and everything else—until next year. John Chrysostom has homilies in which he says, “Has autumn come upon the Church? Have the leaves fallen? The day before yesterday she was flourishing; it was springtime. How did autumn come in a single day?” He called it autumn because the leaves had fallen and the Church was left like a bare trunk. The people were no longer there. Sadly, mankind does not want God. Yet there are those few who do want Him. Remember what Christ said: “Fear not, little flock, for the Kingdom of Heaven has been given to you.” But there are billions of people in the world! Christ is not a merchant. Christ does not calculate profit and loss. Even if only one person...
Were going to be saved, that would have been enough. Beyond what He has already made, I do not know what more He might have created for the sake of one person. Can you tell me how much one soul is worth? You do not know the value of a soul; that is why you say such things—that many have been lost, that many will be lost, or that many do not want Him. Even if only one person wanted Him, it would have been enough for Christ, who is God, to come into the world for that one person alone—for one lost sheep, not merely for many lost sheep. But we weigh things differently, as the world does, asking what is profitable and what is not. Yet that is not how things are. Listen to this thought: let no one...
Be scandalized by the small number of the faithful. Besides the words I have already quoted, “Fear not, little flock,” Christ also said, “When I come, shall I find faith on the earth?” He means that when He comes, He will scarcely find even one faithful person.
This must not lead us into unbelief, as it does some people. We must not say, “Then the Church accomplishes nothing. What you are telling me means nothing; after all, most people do not go to Church.” Do not be carried away by that and fall into a false belief. Instead, let it give rise to a fear that leads to salvation. Our Savior called His flock little. Let that make you vigilant, and strive to enter that little flock. Be among the few, not among the many. God—Christ—is well pleased with this flock alone and recognizes it as His own. “The Lord knows those who are His.” He knows His sheep, and His sheep know Him.
Few are the people who know Christ and are known by Christ, because each person puts himself outside; he does not want Christ. So do not be scandalized when many say that there is nothing there, that the Church offers nothing, that no one needs to attend Church, and that a person can become good outside the Church, without the Church. He cannot. And even if he does become good, that goodness does not prepare him for Paradise. Only the Church forms citizens of Paradise. Outside the Church, education, morality, and good behavior can take a person only as far as Hell. They cannot carry him beyond it, because the Church does not merely form good characters; she forms Christians.
Know this: the Church transmits life. She makes people alive; she brings the human soul to life. And the Kingdom is for the living, not for the dead. Many people are good, but because they have no relationship with the Church, they are the living dead and are not fit for the Kingdom. Therefore, whatever may happen, even if only one person remains, join yourself to that one if you can, and remain with him. Do not be troubled because so many others are outside. That must not carry us away. Be among the few—with Christ—even if you are alone. Christ came for the whole world.
But when the world refuses Him, He does not force it. He creates the right conditions, He reminds people, and sometimes He even takes them by the ears and shakes them. At times He tears their bed out from under them; in a fraction of a second, through an earthquake, He can reduce a prince to a beggar living in a foul-smelling tent. He puts a person through many trials, but He does not perform an operation and implant Himself within him. The person himself must desire Him; he himself must make a move. If he does not willingly do so, nothing happens. From these two things, then, it is clear that a person far from the Church is lost. And since Christ, despite all opposition, continues to preserve the Church for us—at least for us Orthodox Christians—we must make use of her.
A tradition says that a time will come when only three churches will remain in Greece—in this part of the world: the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the church of Saint Athanasios the Athonite on the Holy Mountain, and the Monastery of the Theotokos Eikosiphoinissa on Mount Pangaion. Then we shall see what we will do. If we die in those days, who will bury us, and who will read the Trisagion over our bodies? Then we will understand what the Church means. Those who hear these words may receive an unexpected logismos, an intrusive thought. This deceptive logismos says, “But I believe. These words are for other people, for those who do not believe.” For we are not alone here.
There is me, and there are you who are listening. And it is not only the Holy Spirit who is present. The evil one is here as well, and he too will cast in his own logismos. He wages his struggle. If we choose, we accept that logismos; it is within our freedom. If we do not choose it, we reject it. So he will come and cast into us a subtle and attractive logismos, one that does not appear to come from him. In response to everything he has heard, he says within the person, “But you believe. You have so many icons at home. You always have incense and candles, and you attend Church. What more do you need?” You must pay close attention to what I am telling you, because a person is not saved merely by what he believes.
He is saved by what he does. What is missing from our understanding and from our faith is praxis—the active ascetic life. You have heard what the Church says in a troparion about those who struggled: “Through praxis, O divinely inspired one, you found the ascent to theoria, to divine contemplation.” The devil is one who believes correctly—very correctly indeed. No one believes the truths about God more accurately than the devil does. What, then, is the difference between the faithful and Satan? The devil does not act. He believes, but he does not put that belief into practice. He remains at the level of theory.
Have you ever read the Epistle of James and what the Brother of the Lord says there? “Even the demons believe—and tremble.” We do not tremble; we behave as though we were relatives of God. We speak as casually as if we were speaking to a family acquaintance. We do not even show sacred reverence when taking His name upon our lips. We say, “Christ,” “the Theotokos,” rather than “the Most Holy Theotokos”; “Jesus Christ,” rather than “our Lord Jesus Christ”; “Chrysostom,” rather than “the sacred John Chrysostom.” We show no sacred reverence at all. So one who believes correctly about God—who believes that Christ is God, and so forth—remember the words: “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?”
Satan said this to Christ. Did he not acknowledge that one day he would be judged by Christ? “Have You come,” he asks, “to torment me before the appointed time?” Thus Satan believes correctly concerning the divinity of Jesus and the rest. But because he does not act according to that belief, he remains Satan and is destined for what are called the depths of Hell. Here, then, is the point I want to make as a continuation of these thoughts. You believe—and rightly so—but do you act? For the Lord said, “He who loves Me will keep My law.” That is how you will prove it to Me. He who loves Me...
Keeps My commandments. That is how you will prove it to Me. I once saw a young woman wearing an image of the Most Holy Theotokos around her neck. I asked, “What is that?” “My faith,” she replied. I said, “Do you ever listen to her? Is it enough simply to wear her around your neck? Why are you so disheveled and scantily dressed? Who was that man who dropped you off here in his car at this hour? Where is your faith? Where did you take it? Where have you brought it? Did you take the Most Holy Theotokos out for a stroll?” Do you understand? This is a logismos, an intrusive thought, that deceives many people.
We must be careful at this point. I say, “I am a Christian.” But do I live as a Christian? Let us begin with a simple example. We Christians have a relatively light fast beginning on the fourteenth of November in preparation for Christmas. Do we keep this fast established by our Church—the Church we venerate and regard as our mother, who received us at birth with her prayers, sanctifies and watches over us throughout our life, and in a little while will send us forth from this life, saying, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today”? She will even continue to care for us beyond the grave through the Holy Eucharist...
Through the portions placed in the Holy Chalice for all the departed. We Orthodox Christians, then, are called to fast, provided that by God’s help we are in good health. Do we fast? Most people do not. How, then, can you be a Christian when you reject the teaching of the One in whom you say you believe? Christianity is not theory; it is praxis, the active ascetic life. This is where so many stumble. You celebrated Holy Matrimony in the Church, and the Church blessed your union and prayed that you might see your children’s children and your little ones gathered around your feet. Yet you kill them. You refuse to have children. You take out a measuring tape...
You also take out a scale and measure your own strength. You decide how much you can manage according to your own ego, how you intend to provide for your son, and how you think your daughter must be presented to society. On that basis—not on the power of God or faith in God—you arrange your life as you please. You turn your home into a slaughterhouse with the help of some criminal doctor and a hidden accomplice. Yet an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos hangs above the bed of the one child you did have. Your icon corner is still there. If your mother has died, you bring kollyva to the Church; when you travel abroad, perhaps you send an offering to the Church. And you sleep peacefully, thinking that you are a Christian. Is that truly how things are? Is it true? No. If faith is not demonstrated through praxis, nothing is accomplished. Show me your...
Show me your works, and I will tell you what your faith is. As long as your works are rotten and the fruit is rotten, that means the tree producing such bad fruit is rotten as well. It is therefore essential that a person who says he believes should also act. “I believe.” But you do not attend Church, you do not pray, you do not confess, you do not receive Holy Communion, you do not fast, you refuse to have children, you gamble, and you blaspheme. How dare you say that you believe? How can you take the name of this God, the Holy God, upon your lips when you are unwilling to make any spiritual effort and prove your faith by your works? This, then, is another essential point to which we must pay attention. Saint Maximus, one of the defenders of the faith,
...expresses this thought about the need for works. Listen to how he puts it: “Many of us speak, but few of us act.” Many of us profess faith with our mouths, but few put into practice what we say we believe. I repeat: “Many of us speak, but few of us act.” And you know, when we speak but do not act, we become a cause and an obstacle to others. Those watching us come to believe that Christianity is a theory rather than a way of life, and that it is impossible to live. Do you remember what I once told you, in another connection, about a Jewish woman?
One of our own women went to a clinic to abort her fifth child. She arrived late in the evening, because her husband was away somewhere, and she found her doctor—her own doctor.
But he told her there was no available bed and that she should have notified him beforehand. “I do not know what you are going to do,” she told him. “I cannot come at any other time. I am here now, and now you must...” She was a paying client, and a great deal of money changes hands in cases like these. Then a nurse, the head nurse, came forward and said to him, “Let us ask in such-and-such a room. There are two beds there, and only one lady is staying in the room. If no one else is expected to use the other bed, let us ask her to receive this lady for tonight, and tomorrow another bed will become available.”
That way, she would simply have to remain at the hospital, at the clinic, for a few extra hours. So the head nurse went and asked the lady who was staying in that room. She told her that they had an emergency case, involving bleeding and so forth, but she did not explain what kind of case it really was. “Please, if the bed is not otherwise used tonight, we will deduct its cost from your bill. Would you allow...” “No, no,” the lady replied. “Let her come and stay. Let her stay without paying anything.” The bill was beside the point; she simply wanted the woman to be brought in. And indeed, an hour or two later, they brought the woman in on a stretcher while she was still unconscious. They had performed the procedure and disposed of the child, and then they brought her into the room. Toward dawn, the woman began to regain consciousness. In the morning, while the room was still in semidarkness, she glanced sideways to see what sort of woman...
...was sharing the room with her. Later, when the nurse came to care for her and ask how she was doing, the woman asked, “Who is that lady? What is she?” The nurse indicated, in her own way, that the lady was Jewish. When she heard this, the woman who had come to abort her fifth child noticed that the Jewish woman’s baby was soon brought in and that she gave the little one milk and nursed it at her breast. Seeing all this, and now having fully regained consciousness, she thought it was an opportunity to speak to the Jewish woman about the true Christian faith. So she began explaining that we possess the true faith.
“We have the right faith; we have the true God,” she said. The Jewish woman listened without speaking and made no reply. She remained there as the room’s occupant and patiently received this entire catechetical lesson. After half an hour or forty-five minutes, when it seemed the woman had finished, the Jewish woman asked, “Have you finished?” “I have.” “I am very sorry that I put you to all this trouble. But I will never—never—believe in a God like that, a God who has no power to make human beings truly human and instead has wild beasts for followers. I am very sorry that I received you here tonight, but I did not know. They told me it was an emergency.”
“You are a mother who has murdered her children. You have sent five children to the grave. I want no part of a religion like that. I have kept my own fifth child.” What a scandal! What a scandal! My dear friends, people are not looking for words; they are looking for deeds. You must practice what you preach. The sermon has moved from the ear to the eye. Paul says that faith comes “by hearing,” but none of that will persuade them now. They say, “I will see it with my own eyes. Will you yourself do what you preach? Do you live it?” If you do, then your religion must possess power. It can transform people; it can turn wild beasts into human beings, the ravens of the Ark into doves.
It can turn the wolves of the Ark into lambs. If this faith does not change a person in this sense, then it is nothing. Works, therefore, are necessary. And I have told you that you will prove your faith in practice if you do what your Church teaches. “Many of us speak, but few of us act.” Yet no one should corrupt the words of God. You cannot claim on the one hand that you believe, while on the other hand acting in a way that distorts the faith. No one should corrupt it because of his own negligence—because he himself is unwilling to act—and then claim that this is simply how things are and that nothing more is required. Instead, he must acknowledge his own weakness.
You must acknowledge that it is your own weakness, rather than saying that what you believe means nothing. Do not conceal the truth of God, lest we become guilty both of breaking the commandments and of misrepresenting the words of God. We will be held accountable if we set God’s words aside and do whatever we please. Examine yourselves, therefore; do not examine others. Let us not play the judge, the spiritual inquisitor, or the prosecutor, saying, “Do you know what this man has done? Do you know what that woman has done? He professes Christianity but does the opposite,” and so forth. Let each person look at himself. Is he faithful to the teaching of the One in whom he claims to believe? That is the issue, because people are watching to see whether we ourselves live by that teaching.
If they catch us failing to do what the faith we profess teaches, they will not believe. You must practice it first. A father, for example, tells his child, “Do not smoke, or I will break your hands!” Someone might say, “At least he is telling the child not to do something harmful.” But father, should I not break your hands as well, since you give the child money and send him to buy you a packet of cigarettes? Do you see what that means? You teach your little boy or your daughter not to smoke, while at the same time sending the child to fetch cigarettes for you. Can such a prohibition ever have any force when you are the first...
...to violate it? A child does not listen to what you say; he watches what you do. Is this not true? You shout at your child to get up and go to Church, while you sit there with your coffee, your cigarette, and your newspaper, smoking and drinking your coffee. If the Church is good and necessary for your child, then it is necessary for you as well. You should be the first to go to Church and take the child with you, rather than sending the child while you remain behind. There are countless other things and examples like these that create difficulties for others, because they watch what we do, not what we say. It is easy to speak. But when the time comes to act, it is difficult. We must therefore become upright Christians.
We must be upright not only in our words, but also in our works. How many of us teach that we should give to others, yet never put our own hand into our pocket? How many of us teach that love is good, yet have not even said good morning to certain people for years? How can this be? I remember a young woman who went to confess to a priest in a village. The priest advised her to be reconciled with a cousin after the two had fallen out. “Unless you go and ask forgiveness and make peace with her,” he said, “you will not receive Holy Communion.” The young woman replied, “And you, Father—why have you not spoken to your sister for fifteen years?”
Everyone around them knew that the priest did not have a good relationship with his sister. “If that is how things stand,” the young woman said, “why have you not spoken to your own sister for fifteen years?” Poor Father Nicholas! That is how it is. How can you tell someone else to do something when you do not do it yourself? What kind of Christianity is that? What kind of teaching is it? You must do it first. The other person may never do it, but you must do it first. Otherwise, you yourself become an obstacle in his path. And these are not the only examples I could show you. There are many different forms of this problem, and people look for an example to follow—an example. Of course, we often rush to judge others, but people do seek an example, and they are scandalized. Sometimes, even from sermons, certain people receive...
...ideas that Satan plants in them, and they are lost. A person must therefore be careful about what he teaches others. He must not merely tell them what to do without doing it himself; he must first live it and then speak of it. And whatever he says to another person must be expressed so carefully and precisely that no room is left for a different interpretation. I do not know whether you grasp what I am telling you. These things are essential to Christianity lived in practice, because, as you know, our years are few and our strength is limited. No one knows what will happen or how events will unfold; no one even knows whether evening or morning will find him alive. No one knows. And here is another question: We are supposed to be so rational, to possess so much education today, to reach the moon, and to make so many discoveries.
How is it that we cannot see what we ought to do? How can we not see it? How can we fail to understand? Some people say, “Is he blind? What is happening?” You see, Paul saw Christ only after something like scales fell from his eyes. Before that, he had spent three days in darkness: his eyes were open, but he could not see. When Christ sent Ananias to him, Ananias laid his hand on Paul’s head and baptized him. Then, Holy Scripture says, the scales fell from his eyes, and he saw that he ought to believe in the One whom he had been persecuting. But when did he see? He saw when the scales fell from his eyes. Sin, my dear friends, is like scales over a person’s eyes, preventing him from seeing what is truly for his good. But when he becomes willing and says, “My Christ, remove these scales from my eyes. Give me Your own spectacles so that I may see,” then everything changes. Yet a person cannot do this by himself. And at this point, as we sometimes say...
...you know that Satan is an optician who sells spectacles. We sometimes say, “He outdid us”—literally, “he put spectacles on us.” He sells spectacles. That is why people in love sometimes say, “If only you had my eyes, then you would see how beautiful and noble this young woman is. You do not have my eyes.” What does that mean? Who put those spectacles on you and made you see everything so crookedly? The one we all know—the other one. You did not want Christ to give you spectacles so that you could see correctly. Nor did you ask Christ, “Give me Your own spectacles. Give me Your light so that I may see rightly, and give me the strength to act rightly.” And so a person sees everything in a distorted way. Listen to an account written in the Evergetinos, concerning something one elder used to say. It was one of the elders who said it. What did he say?
“When they cover an ox’s eyes”—when they cover the eyes of an ox, a mule, or a horse—you have seen those animal-driven well wheels, where they harness the animal, cover its eyes, and make it walk round and round drawing up water, even with no one standing nearby. You must have seen such a thing. The elder says: “When they cover the ox’s eyes, it walks round and round the well wheel. But when they do not cover its eyes, it will not keep circling.” Once they remove the covering, the animal stops. The same thing...
...happens with the devil. If he succeeds in covering the eyes of a person’s soul through sorrow or through sin, he can then cast that person into any sin whatsoever. This is the secret. Why can the person not see? Because sin stands before his eyes. But as soon as the sin is removed and lifted away, he cries, “What have I done?” That is why we sometimes say that when someone becomes your enemy, hates you, accuses you, or harms you, you should not behave like a wild beast toward him or harbor enmity against him. He is in Satan’s hands and cannot see. Pray to Christ that he may be delivered from Satan, and then he will come and fall at your feet...
...and ask your forgiveness. “Yes, I did it,” he will admit. At present he cannot see. Satan has placed a screen before his eyes, and he sees things as the devil wants him to see them. But when, through your help, forbearance, and prayer, you pray for him, know that he will come to you once the sins have been removed from between you. When the obstacle I mentioned—the screen, those scales of sin—is taken away, everything will change. We see this in our own lives as well. As soon as, for one reason or another, we fall into sin, we begin to think differently. We look for excuses: “What can we do? That is the way the world is. You see, the flesh troubles me. You see, we live amid all this,” and so forth. You search for excuses to hide yourself. Where do you hide? Behind sin.
Then you repent, you confess, and so on, and you say, “What were those things I was saying? What was all that?” For the veil has been lifted. Do you know, then, how many of us are like animals wearing blinders as they go round and round the well? This is what Satan does to us: he keeps us going round and round in sin, unable to break away from it. My dear friends, I will close this subject by returning to the fear we are experiencing in these last days, which has also come upon us because of our many sins. In Noah’s time, the flood came suddenly. No one expected it. As Peter says, some were marrying, others were becoming engaged, others were feasting, others were conducting business—everyone was occupied with something. And then the flood came,
and overtook them all. Something similar will happen again now, especially since we are living in these last days. One Father says, “In Noah’s time, the flood came suddenly and engulfed everyone.” So it will be on the day that comes to each one of us, whether it is the Second Coming or our death: it will overtake us wherever we are. And when the Antichrist comes, shameful pleasures will abound among mankind. You can see what is already happening in our own days. As the Apostle said, “In the last days, people will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” Our times, then, are warning us that something else may soon befall us.
I do not wish to make prophecies for you or to come as a messenger of doom. I simply say that we should remain watchful and be on guard for the sake of our souls.

Το θέμα της Εκκλησίας και του εκκλησιασμού του. Δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος, εκτός αυτών οι οποίοι δεν στέκουν καλά στα μυαλά τους, που θα ερωτηθεί εάν θέλει να πάει στον Παράδεισο και θα πει όχι. Αν ερωτηθεί, όμως, τι κάνει για να πάει στον Παράδεισο, πώς ετοιμάζεται, πώς σκέπτεται, πώς συμπεριφέρεται, θα βρούμε ότι πράγματι δεν ακολουθεί το δρόμο εκείνον ο οποίος οδεύει προς τον Παράδεισο. Όταν ο άνθρωπος αρρωστήσει, ξέρει το νοσοκομείο. Όταν αρρωστήσει το σώμα, ξέρει τον ιατρό, αναζητά φάρμακα, παρακολουθεί κούρα, εγχειρίζεται πολλές φορές, χρησιμοποιεί, δέχεται. Όταν ασθενεί η ψυχή του, τι κάνει;
Παρακαλέστε τον Χριστό να βρει έναν τρόπο που αυτός ξέρει, να μιλήσει αγαθά στους κυβερνώντας την Εκκλησία μας, στους κυβερνώντας το κράτος, στους γονείς, στους διδασκάλους. Δώστε αφορμή με την προσευχή σας, διότι χανόμαστε. Επιστροφή στην Εκκλησία. Έχει τον τρόπο ο Χριστός. Να σας πω ένα παράδειγμα, το ζήσαμε προ ημερών: τα Εισόδια της Θεοτόκου. Πώς έδωσε χάρη; Ρώτησε την Παναγία και έμεινε έντεκα χρόνια, τριών χρονών κοριτσάκι, μες στους τέσσερις τοίχους του ναού, μες στους ιερείς. Πώς δεν πήγε κοντά να παίξει με τις φίλες της άλλες; Πώς δεν πιάστηκε από το φουστάνι της μητέρας της να φύγει; Ποιος είναι εκείνος που του έδωσε χάρη αυτού του κοριτσιού να μείνει εκεί πέρα μέσα;
Μια σκέψη ότι χρειάζεται πράξεις. Ακούστε πώς τη λέγει αυτός: «Πολλοί εσμέν», είμαστε πολλοί, λέγει, «οι λέγοντες, ολίγοι δε οι ποιούντες». Πολλοί που με το στόμα πιστεύουμε και λίγοι εκείνοι οι οποίοι πράττουμε αυτά που λέμε ότι πιστεύουμε. Το επαναλαμβάνω: «Πολλοί εσμέν οι λέγοντες, ολίγοι δε οι ποιούντες». Και ξέρετε, όταν λέμε μα δεν πράττουμε, γινόμαστε αιτία και εμπόδιο και στους άλλους που μας παρακολουθούν να πιστέψουν ότι ο χριστιανισμός είναι θεωρία και όχι πράξις και είναι κάτι το ακατόρθωτο. Και είναι κάτι το ακατόρθωτο. Θυμόσαστε τι σας είπα μια φορά σε μια άλλη στροφή με μια Εβραία;
