Summary

Christ’s encounter with the Gadarene demoniac reveals Satan as a personal spiritual enemy whose works Christ came to destroy. The title Theotokos safeguards the confession that the one born of the Virgin Mary is truly God incarnate. Believers must reject blasphemy, occult practices, and careless allegiance to evil, seeking the Holy Spirit and Christ’s strength through the Church.

Not merely a victor, but a triumphant conqueror. Yet the steamroller of habit does not allow us to go deeper or pay attention to what the Church seeks to teach us each time. I dare to tell you that I rejoice whenever I am given the opportunity to speak at greater length about a Gospel passage. I preach from the pulpit in church, as I did earlier, for fifteen or eighteen minutes. But in that time it is impossible to develop every detail and present everything contained in a Gospel passage.

Someone says, “I heard it last year.” Then the Church must be wrong to remind you of it again this year! Repetition wearies the person doing the repeating, not the one listening. If the listener truly wants to hear, then even though he has heard a subject many times, he will still say, “I heard something new,” or, “I had not noticed certain things to which I should have paid attention.” Therefore, if we are to follow the order of the Church, I must speak today about the theme of the day. Those of you who went to church and heard the reading should have noticed—as I hope you did—a detail which, unfortunately...

some people fail to notice. It is an encounter between our Christ, a sick man afflicted by evil spirits, and the reality of Satan. In other words, in the passage we heard in church today about the demoniac in the country of the Gadarenes—or the Gergesenes, whichever you prefer—three persons are presented. Most of the time, we see only two: ourselves and our fellow human being, or ourselves and our God. We fail to see a third person, about whom we must have a correct understanding if we are to succeed in this life.

That third person is Satan. Even those who are called believers know little about Satan, and religious people know very little about this third person. Indeed, everyone crosses himself and does not even want to discuss him. Without trying to act brave, we must learn about him; and those of us who have neither learned nor paid attention until now must do so from this point onward. There is a third person. This third person brought God into the world. To borrow the words of the beloved disciple, Christ came into the world to destroy the works of Satan. In that sense, Satan brought Him into the world. We, of course, also contributed, but Satan was the cause. And if I borrow the words of Paul to his countrymen, I must tell you that He Himself likewise shared in the same things, so that He might destroy “the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil.” This shows that there is another major person between us and God, in our midst, about whom most Christians—even religious Christians, not merely those who are Christian on paper—do not have a correct understanding. For if I had a correct understanding of Satan...

I ought not to regard anyone as my enemy. “But he harms me, he slanders me, he steals from me, he treats me unjustly...” Take issue with the one who sets him against you and makes him do these things. Do not take issue with the man himself. Yet what do we see? Lawsuits, people refusing even to say good morning, quarrels, physical violence, guns. Why, and against whom? Against a captive. Who is the captive? The person you call your enemy is a captive in Satan’s hands. Pray and kneel down, asking that he be freed from this tyrant, Satan, and he will come and kiss your feet. He will come and ask your forgiveness and make many prostrations before you. But because we remain ignorant of this third person...

this man, this so-called enemy, has fallen into the nets. The other one has seized him and sets him against you and me. We perpetuate this situation, and so you see lawsuits; you see people refusing to exchange even God’s greeting of “good morning”; and you see people departing this world without having been reconciled with others whom they continue to call enemies. There are no human enemies in the world, my beloved. Satan is humanity’s one true enemy, and we must understand this. Some people know of him, but only so that they can tell others to go to the devil—sending human beings and souls to him. That is the only sense in which they know him. They do not know his devices or his cunning. They do not regard him as a person and...

they do not confront him as a person. Satan is a person. He attacks, organizes his defense, carries out sabotage, and acts with cunning; and this is how we must confront him. If we truly understood Satan, we would also realize that we cannot confront him by ourselves. What, then, would we do? We would take refuge in the Church. Most of those who do not attend church, who attend only irregularly, or who participate wrongly, are in that condition because they do not understand Satan. Consequently, they do not feel the need to come to the Church and fill their quiver with weapons and ammunition against the enemy, against Satan. So today’s Gospel passage, concerning our Christ’s encounter with a demoniac in the country of the Gergesenes...

or, according to another Evangelist, with two demoniacs—and with one demoniac who had within him a legion of demons, about 7,500 of them—ought to make us reflect. If we did not already understand, we ought to begin learning and to consider what may happen to us if we disregard what Christ proclaims. I would say that many people attribute certain abilities to Satan. Abilities for evil, yes, but none for good. They even attribute omniscience to him. That is not true. They place him somewhere...

and absolve themselves of responsibility, saying, “You see, Satan made me do it.” None of this is true; these are lies. We do not have a correct understanding. Satan may have possessed such power before Christ, but after Christ he no longer has such power. Saint Anthony the Great, that teacher of the desert who thoroughly subdued this gentleman, says that from the time Christ came into the world, Satan’s powers were restricted. Someone may ask, “What exactly happened?” Satan’s powers remained the same, but humanity’s powers increased; consequently, Satan was placed at a disadvantage. But which human being gained such power? The one who has a living relationship with Christ—not the one who merely speaks about Christ, nor the one who merely reads about Christ. It is the person who lives with Christ...

who is one with Christ, who is greater than Satan. Through Christ, that person has grown strong. But whoever does not make use of Christ remains David, while Satan always stands before him as Goliath. Only Christians who live the life of the Mysteries of the Church can have this understanding. They live organically with Christ. They are united with Him: He is the vine and they are the branches, as John says and as our holy Church depicts on the iconostasis above the Beautiful Gate, reminding us visibly through our physical sight. So I insist on this point concerning the existence of Satan. I do not know whether you are aware that there are more than seven hundred centers of Satan in Athens.

They go by the name “mediums.” People visit them to obtain answers to their questions and seek information about missing persons or one thing and another. I do not know what concerns them—perhaps matters of the flesh, romantic affairs, or personal gain. Let us not expect such extraordinary intelligence from Satan. He knows the past and the present, of course, but he does not know the future. You should also know that he is confined to place and time; he is not everywhere present. Do not ascribe to him almighty powers that he does not possess. Omnipresence belongs only to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not even this Saint, nor even the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), is...

everywhere present, nor are the Saints. Today this was demonstrated beyond all doubt: six thousand demons failed to recognize Christ before they came face-to-face with Him. If they possessed the power of omnipresence, they would have realized before seeing Him that they must not come into conflict with Him. The proof is that when they met Him, they were immediately humiliated: they fell down before Him, acknowledged His divinity, and begged Him not to send them into the Abyss before the appointed time. What were they thinking? Why did they not stay in their pit?

Stay in your hole, let Him pass, and then come out afterward and do your work. “But I saw Him.” Precisely—and that proves Satan does not possess the powers or the intelligence we ascribe to him when we go to him seeking things that we ought to seek from God alone. Second, Satan himself admits that one day he will be punished: “Do not send us into the Abyss before the appointed time.” He cannot read the nous—the spiritual intellect—of God, the mind of Christ, whom he confesses to be God. He cannot read it. “We beg You, do not send us away. You will send us one day, but do not send us before the appointed time. Do not become angry with us because we are tormenting this creature of Yours, and do not send us away.”

These things make us accountable, while at the same time answering some of our questions. Of course, this testimony comes from the negative side—from Satan. Nevertheless, Christ accepts it, and the Gospel presents it, recalls it, and uses it to teach us; so we ought to pay attention. If a demon calls Christ God, who are you, O man, to question the divinity of Jesus? Who are you, O man, to set up your own reason against Him and question and reject the divinity of Jesus? At your trial tomorrow, the devil himself will be a witness for the prosecution. Yet, as you know, there are millions of people today—heretics, and especially Jehovah’s Witnesses—who reject the divinity of Jesus. And I would not be wrong if I included the Protestants as well.

Some may be scandalized or shocked. Yet the Protestants, in essence, also reject the divinity of Jesus. Let them insist as much as they like that they believe in Christ as God; they reject Him. You may ask, “How?” I will tell you. These people say they believe Christ to be God and believe in Him alone. Yet if you ask them whether Mary is Theotokos (God-bearer), they react as though struck by an electric shock. They do not accept her as Theotokos. They will accept her as a good woman, as a maiden, as a virgin—not as the Ever-Virgin, but simply as one virgin. All of that is acceptable to them, but not that she is Theotokos. Consequently, the One she bore is not God, since they say that she is not Theotokos.

The woman who gave birth to God must be called Theotokos. She bore God. With one breath they insist that Christ is God, and with the next they reject the divinity of Jesus. They fall under the judgment expressed by Saint Gregory the Theologian in the fourth century. This was around the year 350, was it not? The fourth century. And do you know what he says about this? I will tell you: “Whoever does not acknowledge Mary as Theotokos is separated from the Godhead.” Whoever does not accept Mary as Theotokos, he says, is without the Godhead. These things may seem strange to you, but they are true. This is the mind of the Church. In any event, Satan says today, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? Do not torment me before the appointed time.” Satan himself confesses this.

Do you understand how powerfully this confirms the truth? He acknowledges that he will be punished. He cannot read Christ’s decision, so he begs Him. Do you see the lesson here for us? What a lesson this is for us! In any event, I say again and insist upon this point: we must take the person of Satan seriously. He is a person, not a negative force, as certain theologians like to claim. He is not merely moral evil. I repeat: he is a person. Christ drove him out as such, and the Church of Christ continues to drive him out as such. Once a person understands that, between himself, his fellow human beings, and God, someone else is also at work, he must take precautions. He must draw near to the Church of Christ and seek her counsel, for she alone—the Orthodox Church—has authority “to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” No other so-called church is truly the Church, and Satan fears no so-called church except the Orthodox Church. She alone concerns him; she alone commands his attention. That is precisely why he slanders her, attacks her, sabotages her day and night, and seeks to devour her. But as her Founder said, “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against her.”

The Church will pass through the flood, but she will not sink. Keep this in mind, whether we live or die. We shall have the assurance that the Ark will always remain afloat. Whatever flood may come, and however many deadly things it may contain, in both quantity and kind, the Ark will rise higher each day and remain upon the surface. If we take seriously Satan’s work against humanity, we will love the Church—the Orthodox Church. We will take our blankets and go to sleep in the Church, if need be. Today, however, we push the Church to the margins of our lives. We say, “I will decide when to go, what time to arrive, and what I will do there.” No, that is not the way.

This happens because we have learned about the Church and read about the Church, but we have not lived the life of the Church. Learning something is one thing; living it is another. That is what we lack. This is why we see so many people asking, “Has the third bell rung yet?” They want to work out whether it is time to get up, shave, prepare themselves, perhaps eat breakfast, pick up a newspaper—the Acropolis—and go to church. At the end, they also take away the witness for the prosecution, a piece of antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy. They eat it; or if they have already had breakfast, they put it in their pocket, go home, and imagine that this was everything and that they have killed Satan. You laugh? Satan toys with us like worry beads when we do not do what is right. So when we learn, I repeat, about all these things...

we will understand and will want to learn what Orthodox Baptism accomplishes within the Church. We will learn what the second Baptism—metanoia, repentance, together with Confession—accomplishes in the Church. We will learn about the Holy Eucharist and seek to have a living relationship with it: what it accomplishes and why it is necessary. We will learn the power of Holy Unction. We will learn the power of the blessing of water, the Agiasmos. We will learn all these things that exist in the Church, for all of them are directed against Satan and his works. Suppose someone has no correct understanding of Satan and merely makes the sign of the Cross—and that alone is no true cross—or lights a candle. How could that be enough? Does Satan fear such a person? Satan will seize him instead. So Satan does exist. Today we saw him in all his grim display. Our Christ, in order to show us that a human being can become the dwelling place not merely of one demon...

Christ asked this afflicted man, “What is your name?” And he answered, “Legion.” As I told you, this means thousands—a vast multitude. Can such a multitude dwell within a person? Why not? We are speaking of spirits. They occupy no physical space; these are not material things. If you stand on Mount Lycabettus and look out, your eye will see a million roof tiles, although not even a single centimeter could fit inside your eye. You will see a million houses within your eye. How do they fit inside it? How should I know? In something like this way, thousands of demons can also fit within us. And Christ permitted all this to happen and to be recorded so that we might understand this matter correctly.

This man, as the passage tells us—or rather the spirit speaking through him—confessed Christ as God. It said to Him, “What have You to do with me? What is there between You and us, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You, do not torment me.” For Christ had commanded the unclean spirit to come out. It is the unclean spirit that speaks these words. “For He had commanded the unclean spirit,” the Gospel says, “to come out of the man.” There are two spirits: the clean Spirit and the unclean spirit. The clean Spirit is the One of whom we say, “everywhere present and filling all things.” In the prayer “O Heavenly King,” we entreat Him to come and dwell within us and cleanse us from every stain. Whoever does not take care to remain in communion with this clean Spirit should know that he is in communion with the unclean spirit. There is no third state, my beloved. There are two sides. If I am with Christ, I am not with the devil. If I am not with Christ, I am with the devil. If I am with the devil, I am not with Christ. Keep this in mind. There is no middle state here, no neutral ground. There are two sides and two leaders: Christ and Satan. Therefore, if I live the sacramental life of the Church, I am under the influence of the clean and good Spirit. If I do not live the sacramental life of the Church, I am under the influence of the other one, Satan.

“But I do not do what that person does.” Yes, you may not do what someone else does, but neither do you do what you ought to do—and that is where things become tangled. At every moment a person must be cleansed and put in good order, so that he may be ready on that Day. Otherwise, he will not be able to stand there unless the Holy Spirit cleanses him. If a person truly understood this unclean spirit, he would be careful about how he conducts his life. I do not know whether you have noticed that he is called the devil and also Satan. He has many names, and later I shall tell you some that I found and wrote down. Above all, however, he is called the devil. He does not want—perhaps you have heard this when a possessed person speaks of himself—he says, “we.”

“We devils,” he says. But in Greek he avoids the proper word for “devils,” because that word comes from the verb meaning “to slander.” He is the one who slandered God to man, claiming that God would not let him eat from the tree because He did not want him to become a god. That is malicious speech; that is slander. He slandered God, and because this was his work, from that time onward he has been called the devil, the slanderer. Yet he does not want to be called by that name, so he uses a shortened form instead. “We devils,” he says, avoiding the full word. That is where it begins. The devil, as you know, is also Satan, the ancient serpent.

Saint John writes this in the Apocalypse, chapter 12, verse 9. Satan once belonged to the ranks of the angels. We must take this as a warning: we should not expect to find mercy from God beyond the grave. For “God did not spare the angels when they sinned.” He did not spare them, but cast them into Tartarus because they disobeyed. How, then, could He fail to cast me there as well? A person must understand this. If he reads the Second Epistle of Peter, chapter 2, verse 4, he will find the relevant passage; and if he reads verse 6 of Jude, he will learn what the angels were, what their state was, and how they fell: “They abandoned their proper dwelling.” They sought self-deification.

A person should seek to learn the rest of Satan’s conduct and work, and then take the appropriate precautions. Do you understand? I told you that he has various names, and I want you to know at least some of them. If a person allies himself in any way with Satan, obeys him, and performs his works, he automatically becomes an enemy of God.

He takes the side of God’s enemy and, by extension, becomes an enemy of God himself. He may light candles and offer incense, but if he does—whether a little or a great deal—what Satan suggests and desires, whether through weakness, ignorance, or indifference, he must know that he has also become an enemy of God. Because Satan has many different traits, he also has many different names. I found some of them in Holy Scripture, and I shall list them for you. In one place he is called Apollyon.

Apollyon. In Hebrew, the text says—and even explains the name—Abaddon. Elsewhere he is called the Angel of the Abyss, that is, the angel of the bottomless pit; the Crooked One; the ruler of this world; and the ruler of the world of sin. Elsewhere Christ calls him a murderer, one who kills the soul. He is also called Lucifer, the god of this world, Beelzebul, Leviathan, the ancient serpent, Belial, the Dragon, the great red Dragon, the evil spirit, and again the ancient serpent—and I do not know how many other names there may be. The very fact that he has so many titles should make a person stop and think. We also find him described as a liar and the father of lies,

as the tempter, the evil one, and many other things. The Lord permitted all these things to be written in Holy Scripture, presenting him to us as a person: rational and free, yet defiled, evil, and filthy. And nevertheless, I repeat, we forget this person so easily. We remember him only, as I said at the beginning, when we are about to tell someone to go to the devil. Do you understand? Recently I heard a possessed man—or rather, the demon speaking through him—say to the people, using exactly the words we use: “You blaspheme our Christ.”

“You blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos, but you do not blaspheme me,” it said. “You offer prayers and wishes to me. Since you blaspheme your Christ and your Most Holy Theotokos, you are invoking me whenever you send people to me.” And that is exactly so. When someone tells another person to go to the devil, he is acting as the devil’s agent. He is not insulting the devil; he is offering him a wish. He is wishing that Satan’s kingdom might gain one person and that the Kingdom of God might lose one. He becomes the devil’s agent on earth, whether he wants to understand it or not. I say this because this evil habit exists. And if his spiritual father asks him whether he blasphemes, he may even be naive enough to answer, “No, Father, I do not blaspheme. Once in a while I only say, ‘Go to the one outside.’” Do you understand? So you think you are not blaspheming?

He says, “Go to the one outside.” But even this expression is blasphemy. Such foolishness is unacceptable. Indeed, a person would bear a lighter guilt for blaspheming Christ than for sending another human being to the devil. When he blasphemes Christ, or the Most Holy Theotokos His Mother, or a Saint, or the Precious Cross, he blasphemes those who took part in the work of our salvation. But when you send another person to the devil, you blaspheme Christ, the Cross, the Most Holy Theotokos, Golgotha, and Great and Holy Friday. You leave nothing untouched. For all these things took place in order to rescue man from the devil—to whom you are now sending him through your carelessness, lack of love, foolishness, or malice. This is what happens to people who do not have a correct understanding of Satan. They do not have a correct understanding of Satan.

Since I am speaking about this gentleman, have you ever wondered how long he has been at his work, how long he has existed? How old do you think Satan is? He is at least seven thousand five hundred years old—at the very least. When God created Adam, He spoke to him about Satan. When He told him “to tend and to guard,” from what was Adam to guard himself, and what was he to guard? Who was the enemy? Who could oppose the two of them, Adam and Eve? Wait a little and you will see the gentleman appear. God first created, as it seems, the orders of the spiritual world, because when we read chapter 38 of Job, we find that while God was creating the stars, the angels were praising Him. Therefore, the spiritual world already existed.

Then God created man and spoke to him about an enemy. Therefore, the Fall must have taken place in the interval. For Beelzebul, the leader of the demons, had been an angel, the greatest of the cherubim, and he fell through disobedience. Isaiah writes of this in chapter 14: “How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who rose in the morning!” He thought to set his throne above the throne of God, and instead he found himself cast down below. Jude explains this when he says, “He abandoned his proper dwelling.” He did not remain in the ministry to which God had appointed him, but wanted to set his throne above the throne of God. Peter also mentions this, as I told you earlier, in his Second Epistle, chapter 2, verse 4. From the creation of the world until Christ, then, we have five thousand five hundred and eight years,

and nearly another two thousand years since then—we are now somewhere around the year 1980—so that gives us about seven thousand five hundred years. How long before that his fall occurred, we do not know. In any case, we are dealing with a person who has seven thousand years of experience. Whom has he not devoured in all that time? Kings, scholars, patriarchs, ascetics—countless people. His satanic experience is vast. This, then, is how a person must face him. But can anyone ever face him if he knows nothing about him? Once he learns about him, he will seek Christ, and Christ will give him strength. Christ is the One who has the power to bind the strong man and carry off his spoils, as Christ Himself says. A person who has no communion with Christ cannot possibly remain outside Satan’s grasp. This is a grave problem.

I also want you to know that the devil is the cause of death. “Through the envy of the devil, death entered the world.” Read the Wisdom of Solomon, chapter 2, verse 24, and you will find it. Many people accuse God. But God permitted death as a blessing, “so that evil might not become eternal,” as the Orthodox Church says so beautifully and concisely in the prayer of the funeral service. This is why a person must remain spiritually awake. Peter says in his First Catholic Epistle, chapter 5, verse 8: “Practice nepsis—be watchful—and keep vigil, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Do you understand, then, what Satan can do to a person found without Christ,

when Christ does not safeguard him? This is also why Satan often does not appear outwardly. We should not rush to look for an outward manifestation when he is working within us. For the most part, Satan serves as our minister of internal affairs. He is not the minister of foreign affairs or of culture or of anything else; he is the minister of internal affairs. Since he controls things from within, he has no need to appear outwardly. This is the tactic he began to use especially from the third century onward. From then on, Satan went into hiding. Before that, he attacked the Church directly. But he saw that whenever he struck down one martyr, fifteen more arose. In the case of Saint Marina, for example, fifteen thousand people came to believe. He reasoned, “It does not profit me to destroy one person, fail to gain even that one, and lose another fifteen thousand.”

So he began to work insidiously and in secret. We must know this. Christians sometimes recognize it through the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts he casts into them. They notice that something has happened: something has changed, someone has entered their life, and from that moment they begin to grow angry and see things differently. They sense him and recognize what is happening, and at once they hasten to Christ through noetic prayer, asking Him, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Saints to come quickly to their aid. But these are the few sensitive and discerning souls. Others do not perceive that these things are the devil’s work—that he stands outside and casts them within.

Saint Basil the Great offers a teaching about how Satan works together with man, and I have brought it forward to present to you. He says, “The devil is evil, the devil is evil and the creator of every wickedness.” It is impossible for Satan to conceive anything good. If he ever does something that appears good, it is merely seed he sows so that he can trap you later. He gives you something now in order to catch you further down the road. He may leave you untroubled here so that he can seize you somewhere else. He is deceitful. And just as apatheia—freedom from the passions—follows what is good, so that when you have communion with Christ you receive blessing and freedom from the passions, so envy and misery follow the devil. Any person who allies himself with Satan and listens to him will reap misery and ruin.

He will suffer misery; in other words, he will receive the wages of his cooperation with Satan. This is precisely why we must resist the devil. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” He cannot drag us away when we resist him, unless we stand alone. If we have communion with Christ, he cannot do it. In Christ we can do all things. We see his works, we see his hatred, and we feel his influence upon us; but he cannot drag us away, destroy us, or bring us to perdition with him.

In the passage before us, we see that Christ rebuked him. Elsewhere, Christ commands him to be silent. In another place, He tells him to depart. In other words, Christ deals with him in different ways, according to what is beneficial in each case. Christ is not responsible for any evil; the human person is responsible. Yet in our temptations and our falls, we often go so far as to accuse Christ Himself, though nothing could be further from the truth. Even when serious accidents, misfortunes, or losses occur, we accuse God.

This is very much the case here, especially because Christ allowed the demons to enter the swine. They themselves asked Him, “Permit us to enter the swine.” Some people say that Christ was responsible and that He was cruel, because the loss amounted to perhaps ten or twenty thousand kilograms of pork. There were two thousand swine, each weighing on average fifty, seventy, eighty, or a hundred kilograms, so the loss was around twenty thousand kilograms—a great loss. Yet that is not the true meaning of what happened. Some people use this particular incident to attack the Gospel and the actions of Christ. But Christ did not tell the demons, “Go; I command you.”

It says, “He permitted them.” He permitted them—that is, He did not restrain or prevent them. He did not command them to go, nor did He put out His hand to stop them; but neither did He order them to do it. As one Father says, “Jesus did not prevent it, but neither did He command such a thing.” His command was that they come out of that man: “What I command you is to free this man for Me.” What happened after that is another matter. He did not tell them to go; Scripture says that He “permitted them.” So here we find a thought that can edify us. God often permits something. When He permits it, this means that He does not intervene to prevent it.

He does not intervene. Take, for example, the existence of sin. God does not approve of sin, but He permits it. He does not approve of your committing the sin. Suppose you are here before me: I do not intervene by force and tell you not to do it, but neither do I prevent you. So it is with sin. Many accidents also happen which God permits. He does not decree that you must suffer the accident. You bear responsibility, and then perhaps we do as well—not Him. People feel sorry for the two thousand swine: “What had the poor creatures done wrong?” they ask.

They were overcome with pity. I was speaking with a university student, and she said to me, “What had the poor creatures done wrong?” “And what did the poor creatures suffer?” I replied. After all, they existed to be used for our benefit. But the deeper teaching lies elsewhere. God did not cause this; He permitted the demons to enter the swine and, as a result, permitted this material loss. There is a lesson in it. Pork had been forbidden; God had prohibited it. Yet because these people made a great deal of money from it, they were raising swine unlawfully. So He showed them that “what is wrongly gathered is wrongly scattered.” How do you know why He permitted it? Some people likewise present themselves as more compassionate than the Compassionate One, saying that infants were slaughtered when Christ was born. They ask, “Who, then, is the evildoer—Herod or Christ?” Do you understand?

That is what people say when they neither know nor look deeply. Did Christ order the slaughter? Should He have seized Herod’s hand? If He had, how could He judge him on the Last Day? Christ does not restrain a person’s hand by force. If you ask Him, He does: if you say, “My God, help me,” He intervenes. But when you insist on doing your own will, God does not restrain you. He watches. Could He not have seized Cain’s hand? He could have, but He did not. He warned him, watched over him, and spoke to him, yet He left him free to the very end. Could He not have seized Eve’s hand by force and told her, “Do not do this”? Of course He could. Yet then Eve’s choice would have had no value. Not only did He refrain from seizing her hand, but He showed His concern for what she had done. He waited for her all day, helped her, and in the evening asked, “Where are you? Have you perhaps eaten?” “So You know that we ate?” “I know that you ate, but I want to help you—”

“—to repent.” And yet man still refuses to acknowledge that he himself is responsible because he misuses his freedom. God will judge him on the Last Day precisely as a free person, but he accuses God. Since I have touched on this subject, what harm truly came to the fourteen thousand infants who were slaughtered? Our Church commemorates fourteen thousand martyrs on December 29: fourteen thousand children, fourteen thousand martyrs in eternity. Suppose God had seized Herod’s hand, or suppose an executioner had killed Herod and spared the fourteen thousand little angels, as some call them. How many of those fourteen thousand would ultimately have entered Paradise? If today scarcely one or two out of fourteen thousand enter Paradise, how many of those unbaptized children would have entered Paradise?

Exclude those who would have become fornicators, adulterers, thieves, those enslaved to self-abuse, atheists, criminals—exclude one group after another. How would all fourteen thousand children have entered Paradise? But now all fourteen thousand have entered. Was any harm done? Or were they not spared from remaining here to hear evil, see evil, and commit the evil of this world? A person ought to reflect deeply on these things, never take scandal, and seek the cause within himself rather than blaming Christ or His activity in general. In this case, then, we see that Satan acted on his own initiative, and those people received the consequences. There is one more thing I want you to know and consider. Scripture says that he asked Him; he begged Him—he begged Christ—to let them go.

Satan can do nothing entirely on his own; he must receive permission, especially where a Christian is concerned. If someone troubles you, there will be a reason. If someone wrongs you, there will be a reason. Take care to discover that reason. If you yourself are causing it, heal the cause so that the effect may cease. But if you are not the cause, then you are among the blessed. Give thanks to God twice, ten times, a hundred times, because He permits a temptation so that you may become better and be edified. Without temptations, there are no crowns in the Kingdom of Heaven. Satan ought to be included in our prayer: first, because he is a spirit.

It is sorrowful for a spirit to be lost. Second, because together with his instruments he becomes, unwillingly, our benefactor. If you have no enemies, do not expect the Kingdom of Heaven. The devil and his instruments are truly the stones on which we are tested. There we sit our examinations; there our faith, steadfastness, patient endurance, humility, and freedom from resentment are revealed. They are revealed in temptation, when the devil comes through his instrument to trouble you, harm you, or wrong you. Unfortunately, we do not understand these matters in this way, because we do not place this gentleman where he belongs. We always shift the blame either onto God or onto Satan himself, although Satan merely tempts us and thereby benefits us. He tempts us when we leave some door open, when there is something we are not doing rightly—

—and through that opening he enters. In this way he gives us the opportunity to understand that something is wrong and to put it right. He too should be included in our prayer, as Saint Isaac the Syrian and Saint Theodore the Studite say so beautifully. Both of them—and Saint Gregory the Theologian as well—write that we should include even Satan in our prayer. We should pray, if it were possible, that one day God might save even that spirit. Of course, he will not be saved, because Satan is a source of evil, and a source does not change. Satan possesses evil by nature, while our evil is acquired. We still have the opportunity for metanoia, for repentance: to return and be corrected. He has no such opportunity; he is a source of evil. My beloved, I once heard something that made me shudder, and I still shudder whenever I hear it. A woman dared to say to a demoniac, “May you have a blessed Paradise.”

When she said, “May you have a blessed Paradise,” wishing Paradise to the demoniac, the demon shrieked, “I do not want that Paradise! Paradise? I do not want Paradise!” They said to it, “Paradise!” But it answered, “I do not want it.” If anyone doubts this or wishes to hear it, I have the recording. Let me find it, and you can listen for yourselves. Satan is a source of evil. Do you expect repentance from him? Yet because God grieves for him—because he is His creature, His creation, one of the beings He has made—when a person reaches spiritual maturity and advances, remember this, he will begin to pray even for the devil, for his salvation. See how refined and tender the soul becomes. We are still coarse. How could we pray in that way? If someone develops cancer, then perhaps we might pray. Thank you.

As for such higher things, we do not pray for them. We do not know them; they are foreign to us, because we have not advanced that far in the Christian life. In any case, since only a little time remains, there is one more conclusion to draw from this passage. The man who had been sick, poor soul, said, “Let me remain near You.” I believe he asked out of fear that, if he moved away from Christ, these gentlemen—the demons—might seize him again. Scripture says, “The man from whom the demons had gone out begged Him that he might be with Him.” He wanted to remain with Christ. But Christ did not receive him. It says here, “Jesus sent him away, saying—”

“Return to your house and tell all that God has done for you.” Once again Christ Himself calls Himself God. Or, we might say, tell all that God permitted to happen to you today. This would be the greatest expression of gratitude to God—whether to God in the person of Christ, who is God, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, or to God, to Jehovah, as one might put it. This is necessary for us and for all Christians. We have often seen the hand of God in our lives—in our homes, upon us, in our families, in our work, and among our friends—yet we are ashamed to speak of what we have experienced. The pulpit does not possess as much power as the testimony of something that has truly happened.

We Orthodox—I dare say—have no Orthodox household among us that has not experienced some miracle, either personally within the home or in its immediate circle. Our Greece is a succession of miracles. The Greek himself is a living, moving miracle. Yet we are ashamed to speak of it. In our days, as you know, we are even ashamed to make the sign of the Cross, to fast, or to refuse a non-fasting sweet offered to us on a fasting day, and so forth. We are ashamed to confess our faith. Christ says, “Go. You do not need to come with Me. Tell everyone what God has done for you: that you had a legion of demons within you and He cast them out with a single word.” That is enough. In other words, faith is demonstrated by works.

By works—by what a person himself receives through the miracle and through all these things. There is no need for many words; two words are enough. You know, people were terrified of me; they would not pass by that place.

πανταχού παρούσα ή παρόντες οι Άγιοι. Σήμερα αυτό απεδείχθη περιτράνως, ότι 6.000 σατανάδες δεν κατόρθωσαν να διακρίνουν τον Χριστό πριν έρθουν αντιμέτωποι. Διότι, εάν είχαν τη δύναμη της πανταχού παρουσίας, θα έπρεπε να διακρίνουν, πριν Τον δούνε, ότι δεν πρέπει να έρθουμε σε σύγκρουση μαζί Του. Η απόδειξη είναι ότι, όταν συναντήθηκαν, εξευτελίστηκαν αμέσως, διότι προσέπεσαν, αναγνώρισαν τη θεότητα και προσέπεσαν να Τον παρακαλέσουν να μην τους στείλει προ της ώρας στην Άβυσσον. Τι θέλεις λοιπόν; Δεν κάθεσαι στον λάκκο σου;

«Την Παναγία, εμένα», λέει, «δεν με βλασφημείτε, εμένα», λέει, «μου εύχεστε. Εφόσον τον Χριστό και την Παναγία», λέει, «τον Χριστό σας και την Παναγία σας βλασφημείτε, εμένα», λέει, «μου εύχεστε με το να μου στέλνετε ανθρώπους». Κι έτσι είναι. Όταν κάποιος στέλνει κάποιον εις τον διάβολο, είναι πράκτωρ, δεν είναι βλάσφημος αυτός, είναι ευχέτης. Εύχεται του σατανά να μειώσει τη Βασιλεία του Θεού κατά ένα πρόσωπο και να αυξηθεί η βασιλεία του διαβόλου. Είναι πράκτωρ του διαβόλου στη γη, είτε θέλει να το καταλάβει είτε δεν θέλει. Και το λέγω αυτό το πράγμα διότι υπάρχει αυτή η κακή συνήθεια. Και μάλιστα, αν ποτέ ερωτηθεί κανείς από τον πνευματικό του αν βλασφημεί, έχει την αφέλεια να πει ότι: «Όχι, πάτερ μου, δεν βλασφημώ. Καμιά φορά τον “έξω από εδώ” λέω». Καταλαβαίνετε; Ώστε δεν βλασφημείς;

Τους έπιασε ο πόνος. Μιλούσα με μια φοιτήτρια. «Τι φταίγανε», μου λέει, «τα καημένα;» «Και τι πάθανε», λέω, «τα καημένα;» Άλλωστε αυτά ήρθανε για να χρησιμοποιηθούν για μας. Αλλά η διδασκαλία είναι παρακάτω. Αν ο Θεός επέτρεψε, δεν επέβαλε, επέτρεψε να πάνε στους χοίρους και, κατ' επέκταση, να γίνει η υλική αυτή ζημιά, έχει ένα μάθημα. Το χοίρειο κρέας απαγορεύεται, το έχει απαγορέψει. Και αυτοί, διότι κέρδιζαν πολλά, παρανόμως έτρεφον χοίρους και τους δείχνει ότι «τα κακώς συναγόμενα κακώς σκορπίζονται». Πού ξέρεις εσύ για ποιο λόγο το έκανε; Όπως άλλοι επίσης παρουσιάζονται πιο φιλάνθρωποι του Φιλανθρώπου, ότι εσφάγησαν, λέγει, νήπια στις ημέρες που εγεννήθη ο Χριστός μας. «Δεν είναι», λέει, «ποιος είναι κακούργος τώρα, ο Ηρώδης ή ο Χριστός;» Καταλάβατε;

σας βοηθήσω να μετανοήσετε». Και εν τούτοις ο άνθρωπος εξακολουθεί να μη θέλει να βρει ότι είναι αυτός υπεύθυνος, που κάνει κακή χρήση της ελευθερίας του. Και ως ελεύθερον θα τον κρίνει αύριο ο Θεός, και κατηγορεί τον Θεό. Άλλωστε, μια και έθιξα αυτό, τι ζημιά έγινε στα 14.000 νήπια που εσφάγησαν; Η Εκκλησία μας έχει 14.000 μάρτυρες, στις 29 του μηνός Δεκεμβρίου, που μνημονεύει. 14.000 παιδιά, 14.000 μάρτυρες στην αιωνιότητα. Ας παραδεχτούμε ότι έπιανε το χέρι του Ηρώδου ή φόνευε τον Ηρώδη, γινόταν αυτός ο σπεκουλάτωρ και φόνευε τον Ηρώδη και γλιτώναν τα 14.000 τα αγγελούδια, όπως τα λένε ορισμένοι. Πόσα θα πήγαιναν στον Παράδεισο από τις 14.000; Αν σήμερα στις 14.000 ζήτημα να πάει ένα-δύο στον Παράδεισο, τότε αυτά αβάπτιστα πόσα θα πηγαίνουν στον Παράδεισο;
