Summary
People readily notice missing virtues in others while overlooking their own need for repentance and transformation. Forgiveness begins with the willingness to obey Christ, because what a person cannot accomplish alone Christ can accomplish through grace. The example of Saint Gerasimos and the lion illustrates that compassionate love can soften even the fiercest nature and always receives its reward from Christ.

Wherever we turn, wherever we may be, we find that certain virtues are lacking in people. And the trouble is that we see the shortcomings of others, but we do not see our own. That old saying we learned in our school reader is always being fulfilled: a man carries two sacks, one in front and one behind. Two sacks, two bags. In the one in front he carries everyone else; in the one behind, himself. And so he cannot see himself.
He does not see himself; he sees everyone else, and so this vicious circle continues. We enter one home and find no peace; elsewhere we find no love; somewhere else no patient endurance. Everywhere, something is missing. And we write out a prescription like a doctor: “Have love, have peace, forgive one another.” Then we leave it on the bedside table for them to follow. But how can they follow it? Where are you to find love? Where are you to find peace, kindness, self-control, patient endurance—all these beautiful things that a human being needs?
And especially the person of today. Modern man is like an olive tree after it has been beaten for harvesting. You know how, on the islands, they beat the olive trees thoroughly with poles, leaving only a few stray olives on the branches? That is what man is like. The person of today has no virtues, yet he demands them from others. He sees that they are missing from society and missing from the family. He sees the lack, but expects others to make it good. He himself has made no effort. And so, as I said, the prescription remains unfilled, because these are not things you can order and have delivered, or go and buy for yourself. Such things are not for sale.
They are not for sale. Paul has addressed this subject and given us certain essential prescriptions. If, then, you wish to attain any of these things, you must go and find the tree that bears them. You know that he calls all these good things the fruit of the Holy Spirit. And when we hear the word “fruit,” our nous, our spiritual intellect, immediately turns to the tree and its root. If we want walnuts, we go to the walnut tree. If we want apples, we go to the apple tree. If we want grapes, we go to the vine. For each fruit, you go to the tree that bears it. What, then, is the tree that bears love? What is the tree that bears joy? What tree bears kindness, patient endurance, and self-control? That is the question. It is the Holy Spirit. In his Epistle to the Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two and following, Paul speaks about the very things I am speaking to you about now. Listen to what he says: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patient endurance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
All these are produced by one and the same tree: the Holy Spirit. Therefore, whoever does not possess the grace of the Holy Spirit cannot possess these fruits. Since they are fruits of the Spirit, such a person may have a counterfeit love, but not the true one.
The first fruit presented here is love. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love.” People will say, “Love? Glory to God, love exists.” But what kind of love exists? For there are two masters who speak about love. The devil also speaks about love. A married woman and a married man become lovers and call it love—and may even kill themselves over it.
They do it for love, they say, but this is satanic love.
Two friends drink and revel together, call it love, and each will make sacrifices for the other. Two women friends do the same, calling it love and making sacrifices for one another. But that is not love; it is satanic love. It is not the fruit of the good Holy Spirit, but the fruit of an evil spirit. What sort of love is that? My beloved, do you know what it means to be a Christian? What does “Christian” mean? It means sacrifice in the service of another. A Christian who does not place his ego, his wallet, his strength—in short, his whole being—at the service of another may bear the name Christian, but he is not truly a Christian. Love—
the love of which Paul speaks—“does not seek its own,” but seeks what belongs to the other. Love does not seek its own satisfaction: that my ego should be satisfied, my pocket filled, or my position secured. No; it seeks the good of the other. That is love—the love that costs something. Most of us have a love that costs us nothing, and therefore we have no real love. You visit a place, greet a certain lady, and you know that Mrs. Katina lives upstairs. “Is Mrs. Katina there?” “Of course, sir. Katina! Katina! Mrs. Eleni is here!” Everything is fine. A few days later you return. “Do you happen to know whether Mrs. Katina is upstairs?” A sullen face appears below, and suddenly she knows nothing about Mrs. Katina, because the two of them have quarreled.
Is that love? Such love cannot endure. It is counterfeit love: cheek-to-cheek embraces, kisses, tears, kissing of hands, and all the rest. It is not sacrificial love that endures; it is false love. Is there love in the world today? There is no love in the world today. Let no one claim that he loves; it is false. He does not truly love. Once his ego, self-interest, and flesh are no longer being served, his love disappears. There is no love, either among individuals or among nations. You see people devouring one another—wars and all manner of dreadful things—even though there is enough wealth and food for billions of people, with enough for billions more to live. And yet, as you see, every day we remain in danger.
We face the danger of nuclear war and all that it entails. We have nowhere to turn because there is no love—the love of Christ, true love. I do not mean ordinary “love”: love of the dollar, love of erotic pleasure, or love of various other ideals. Those are false. True sacrificial love for one’s fellow human being does not exist today, not even within the family. Often the wife does not love her husband, nor the husband his wife, even though her body is not hers alone, nor is his body his alone. A man takes the body he once presented to his beloved and gives it to another woman; or the woman gives hers to another man. And so adultery enters into the very heart of the home, and corruption follows. Where is love? Where is the word, “The two shall become one flesh”?
A father does not respect even himself. He behaves shamefully, blasphemes, smokes, and gets drunk in front of the little ones, in front of his children and grandchildren, passing on to others everything evil and unworthy. Where is love? Why does he not sacrifice his passions, so that he will not become a cause of stumbling to another? The son does not respect his father or his mother. You take your mother and send her to a home for the elderly—to a golden prison. Tomorrow his own children will send him there, so that they too can avoid the burden of caring for an old man. Will he not grow old? Will I not grow old?
Tomorrow, when the situation is reversed, then come and speak to me about such behavior. “But you know, there is a doctor there, and proper care,” and so on. Very well, but that does not satisfy the old man, even if they serve him food on a golden plate. He passes his little icon around him. What he wants is to see you in the evening, when his child comes home tired from work. He wants to caress your child, and nothing more. He wants a glass of water from your own hands, because he regards those hands as his own. He longs for his grandson and his granddaughter; he aches for them. Do you know why a grandchild causes such tenderness? If that child is hurt, you are beside yourself with pain. The grandparent suffers even more, because, as the saying goes, “My child’s child is twice my child.” Yet we send them away. There is no love, and we are repaid in the same coin, but still we do not come to our senses. This should not be.
And what of husband and wife? Does the husband sacrifice himself for his wife today? Does the wife sacrifice herself for her husband? She may treat him with indifference, as though he were a dog. That deep love of the soul does not exist. When you were crowned in Holy Matrimony, you took the common cup and drank from it. That cup is the cup of tribulations. If your wife proves difficult, or your husband has faults, that is the cup you have been given. You are called spouses, husband and wife. But what does “spouse” mean? It means being placed together under the same yoke. One ox pulls from this side and the other from that, and together they draw the plow. When one does not pull, the other must pull harder. “But you know...” I do not know anything of the sort. I will tell you only one thing: when Scripture says, “The two shall become one flesh”—
“Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate”—neither the spouses themselves nor anyone else, except in the case of adultery. That is a separate matter; one must distinguish one case from another. There you cannot simply interfere. What is the husband called? The stronger half. What is the wife called? The tender half. What does “half” mean? What does the English word “half,” which you use, mean? One half. A married couple consists of two bodies, yet they are one human being—one human being. Each, then, is one half. Suppose your wife has not proved to be a good wife: she does not agree with you and therefore does not walk in harmony with you. It is as though the body has suffered paralysis on one side. One half of you—the tender half—has been stricken.
It has suffered paralysis and cannot help you. When one side of your body is paralyzed, what do you do? Do you go to the doctor and say, “Cut off half of me and throw it away”? No. What do you do? You carry that half along with you until death. Is that not so? Or perhaps your husband has not proved to be a good husband. What will you do? Now it is the other side of you that has been stricken with paralysis. Will you go and say, “Cut it off and throw it away”? Such things cannot be done. Yet some people imagine that all this can somehow be reconciled with our faith. No, my beloved, these things cannot be reconciled. Here I have encountered many such situations involving married couples.
You have broken your marriage and severed your relationship with your wife or your husband. Nothing can free you from that bond. You are like a dog that has snapped its chain and now wanders through the marketplace, dragging the chain behind it. The chain of marriage follows you. Put your ear back and you will hear it. No one can remove it, says the divine John Chrysostom, whatever the state or its laws may say. What does Christ say? Marriage is something divine and blessed. And now we hear of civil marriages. A civil marriage is, above all, fornication. The man is a fornicator and the woman a fornicator. You have no right to claim him merely because you found him. Soon you will hear, in the account of the Samaritan Woman: “For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband.” He is your adulterous partner, your partner in fornication; he is not your husband, because the union is not lawful.
Your marriage has not been blessed. I did not give him to you; you took him on your own. Or you took her on your own. Where, then, is love? Where is the love that keeps a child close to his father? Where is the mother who should become a bridge between husband and wife, but instead steps between them and separates them? Where is love? What does Holy Scripture teach? “But do you know what my daughter-in-law said to me?” Swallow what your daughter-in-law said to you. Swallow it. Perhaps she has work to do, perhaps she has children, perhaps she has her own little troubles. Perhaps she is simply difficult—let me put it that way. Even so, when your son comes home at noon and asks, “How was your day, Mother?” answer, “Glory to God, my child.”
“I heard that Katina spoke harshly to you.” “Well, she said a word in frustration. She has her troubles too; she has children and she works. I swallowed it, and that is the end of it. Do not listen to such talk.” Can you not say that? Of course you can. But what does the mother often say instead? “Katina said such-and-such to me,” whether the word was good or bad. Then she takes it and embellishes it, piling more and more upon it. Instead of extinguishing the fire, she kindles it. Then come the blasphemous curses against Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos, followed by shameless words such as, “I can find another wife, but I can never have another mother.” And so the whole house is blown apart. Do you know how many mothers-in-law are in Hell? I cannot tell you. I cannot tell you. The men—the fathers-in-law—are generally different, whatever their other faults may be. It is the mothers who most often step between the couple.
Mothers can do great harm. They often place their children in a terrible position, leaving them unsure how to act, and many married couples have been separated because of their parents. Of course, some spouses have also behaved foolishly, whether the wife or the husband. For when they married, Scripture said, “A man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined to his wife.” Do not listen when someone says, “You can find another wife or another husband, but you cannot have another mother.” The Church separated you from your mother and father so that you could be joined to your spouse. This does not change the fact that, as their child, you are obliged to show love toward your elderly father and your mother. Such is our society, and such are even the Christians. I am not speaking about people who have no relationship with the Church; they do not understand these things. But even Christians behave this way, and this true love is absent.
Does one sacrifice himself for the other? When someone says a hurtful word to you—whether it is your mother, your daughter-in-law, your father, or your son-in-law—it is like placing a glowing coal there. A word once spoken is a glowing coal. Be careful that it does not become a fire. Do not pile wood on it, or we will have a fire. Do not blow on it, or we will have a fire. What should you do? Spit on it and put it out. Both saliva and breath come from the same mouth. Why let out your breath and fan it into a fire instead of spitting on it and extinguishing it? It is up to you. But love is absent—the love of the Holy Spirit. Love exists only as long as there is something to be gained. As long as your son-in-law brings you slippers, he is all right. As long as your daughter-in-law brings you socks, she is all right.
That is self-interested love; it is not love. Sacrifice, sacrifice—that is the love which is absent. It is the love which, as Paul says elsewhere, surpasses all understanding, all understanding. A person must offer himself as a sacrifice for the other. And when a person sacrifices himself for the other, Christ becomes a sacrifice for him. For there are two words: obedience and obedience in return. Obey what I tell you, and I will respond to what you need. If you do not obey what I tell you, neither will I respond. You can throw yourself on the ground if you like. Many of us ask things of God and expect God to yield to us, to show us love and help us.
We ask Him to give us health and to give us work, while we ourselves refuse to do what He asks. We are hardhearted in this matter because we do not possess that grace which is called the Holy Spirit. Some people have gone years without speaking to one another. Some pour out such venom that they could poison even vipers, and yet they are called Christians. Only the other day, at Christ’s Resurrection, they held their candles and said, “Christ is risen! Many years!” Yet there is no love—only malice, hatred, and revenge. When and where can these things ever be reconciled? Someone may say, “But are these things easy?” I speak of them precisely because they are difficult. Easy things need no remedy; difficult things do. But the issue is...
We do not want even these difficult things to become easy. Ask the many people who have the kind of problem I am discussing now, and they will say, “I cannot do that.” Many heard me speak last year about forgiveness and said, “It is impossible for me. I hate her.” Then what are you doing here in the Church? What do you want here? You hear the Lord’s Prayer: “Forgive us our debts,” our own debts, “as we also forgive.” Yet you are lying when you say it, because you have not forgiven. Go out, then, with the catechumens. What business do you have inside the Church?
We are deluded. We are deluded—utterly deluded, in the fullest sense of the word. You cannot do it; I agree. But do you want to? That is the question.
Do you want to? Even when I ask, “Do you want to?” your answer will be, “I cannot.” I am asking whether you want to, not whether you can. Christ does not ask whether a person can; He asks whether he wants to. By himself, a person can do nothing. His knife has no edge: he cannot cut away a single fault. He cannot cut anything away or deprive his corrupted flesh, his ego, his self-interest, or his attachment to fashion of anything at all. But the One who can remake him, shape him, and turn him on the lathe is Christ. And Christ asks the person, “Do you want to?” Yet the person asks for time, as offenders and criminals ask the prosecutor for time before giving their defense.
He wants more time. Say, “Yes, I want to,” just as we say at Baptism, and you will see how things begin to change. Christ will remove the spectacles the devil has put on you, through which you see everything as you do now. He will give you His own spectacles, and you will say, “What have I done? Where have I been all this time? Why was I unable to sleep peacefully? Why was I trembling over this worm eating away at me?” For it is like a worm; it is like rust. Rust. All this hatred, all this passion, all this revenge you seek is like rust that eats through everything. I have seen how your cars here are eaten away underneath by moisture, road salt, and the other effects of winter. In the same way, people are eaten away within, consumed as though by worms, because they have not asked Christ for help. You were asleep when, in another section, we spoke of the lament over Jerusalem that we heard on the evening of Holy Tuesday.
God said to the Jews then, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I wanted to gather your children beneath My wings, as a hen gathers her chicks, but you were not willing.” A mother hen has nine different calls. She calls one way when everything is peaceful: “Cluck, cluck, cluck.” She calls another way when she finds a worm, and you see the chicks come running to eat it. If a hawk appears, she makes a different sound, and they run beneath her to hide. She speaks with nine different calls. So He says, “I spoke to you. I spoke gently, and I spoke sternly. I sent prophets; I sent Apostles; I came Myself; but you were not willing.” He does not say that they were unable. And elsewhere, where He says, “Search the Scriptures,” in John, chapter five...
Verse 39: “For you suppose that in them you have eternal life”—because you think, He says, that you will find eternal life in the Scriptures—“and these very Scriptures bear witness to Me.” They write about Me. “Yet you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have eternal life.” I am the One of whom they speak, yet you are unwilling to do what I tell you so that you may have eternal life. You are unwilling—not unable. Therefore, if you find something difficult and cannot overcome it, kneel down and say: “My Christ, You told me to do this: to love even this enemy of mine, without calculation, without seeking gain, without self-interest, and to love him even at the cost of sacrifice. I beg You, I cannot love him. Give me the strength. I want to!”
You will see your way of thinking begin to change at once. You will begin to feel compassion for the person you hated and about whom you wanted to hear terrible news. You will begin to see him as a human being, as someone who belongs to Christ. Many people seek revenge without understanding what they are doing. Once, a man was praying in his room, while next door lived another man, an Antichrist of a fellow. The moment he smelled incense coming from the first man’s room, he would begin to blaspheme. He would turn his radio up as loud as it would go and prevent his neighbor from praying. This happened one night, two nights, ten nights, a hundred nights. Then one evening, the man changed his prayer. He lit his lamp and pleaded with God: “My God, why don’t You...
take him away at last, so that I can be free to continue on my path and say my prayers? Why don’t You take him, since he refuses to repent and is such a man?” He turned his prayer against his neighbor and ordered God to take him away.
That was the end of the matter, and he went to sleep. In his sleep, he saw himself walking along a perfectly straight road, a great highway. Then he saw Christ coming toward him and recognized that it was Christ. He could not step aside. Christ had set out along that road, and He would continue on it.
They drew nearer and nearer to one another. Then Christ suddenly stood before him. “Do you know Me?” He asked. “I do not know You, Lord.” “Who placed you upon this straight road?”
The man said, “Lord, who is it that keeps me on this straight road that leads to perfection?” “You do, Lord,” he answered. “Do you know that man?” Christ asked. He turned and saw his neighbor at the edge of a precipice, half his body hanging over the abyss and only his legs remaining above it. “I know him,” he said. “Who is he?” “He is my neighbor.” “Why did you put him there?” Christ asked. “Last night you begged Me to remove him, and now I have brought him this far. What shall we do? Do you want us to throw him down? I was crucified for him. You were not crucified for him; I was crucified for him, and I desire his salvation. Would you rather that we endure a little longer, help him, wait for him to turn back, and bring him onto this road as well?”
“Do you want to travel on alone while he falls into the abyss?” Oh, indeed! One sin piled upon another: lying, fornication, adultery, theft, blasphemy, dishonor, gossip—so many things, one on top of another. Have you ever seen employees from a dry cleaner carrying fifteen or twenty jackets across their backs, one piled upon another? That is how we are, layered like onions. A person may easily cut out blasphemy, throw away the wine, cast off fornication, abandon theft, and remove many other things. But the last thing to come off—and it comes off together with the skin—is the ego. A person will not remove it, because he demands satisfaction for himself.
Sadly, there is no sacrifice. And when God, who is love, sees no love, He is not moved. What did He tell the Jews? “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” It was easy for them to slaughter calves and lambs; it cost them nothing. “I desire mercy, love toward your fellow human being—love toward your fellow human being.” You must place yourself at the service of another person. My beloved, unless societies reach this point, they will disappear. And the people who influence society are the Christians. Let us not keep blaming society.
Society is an abstract idea. You speak of “the world,” but which world? What is the world? Is society itself the world? No. Society is a collection of families, and families are collections of individuals. Unless the individual is made right—unless I, you, and the next person are made right—our families will not be good, and consequently neither will society. Society will become a jungle. Let me put myself in order; you put yourself in order; let the young woman, the young man, and all Christians put their own lives in order. Then at once they will spread their fragrance to others, and the whole lump of dough will be transformed. When we do not put ourselves in order, naturally we cannot put anyone else in order. Sometimes we go to a government office where they have tormented us just to obtain a document...
and suddenly an employee steps forward and says, “Sit down; I will get it for you.” He hurries off at once, then says, “Here it is. Take it, and go with God’s blessing.” And you say, “Glory to God that at least one real human being was found.” He was obliged to serve you in the first place, yet another employee tormented you because he did not behave like a human being. So when you finally find one who does, you say, “Blessed is the mother who bore him. Blessed is the mother who has such a daughter or such a fine young man. Blessed is the husband who has such a wife, and blessed is the wife who has such a husband,” simply because that person helped you. You give glory to God. What did they say about the mother of our Christ when He was speaking? “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts that nursed You.” But what do people say about our children today? “A curse upon your mother, because you took away the father of my...
children!” “A curse upon your mother, because you took away the mother of my children!” Why? Because when the doors of our homes open, wild beasts come out. The home has become a breeding ground for beasts. And when beasts come out, society naturally becomes a jungle. You live in danger and barricade yourself inside, yet even then you may not escape unharmed. Therefore, unless this commandment of the Gospel—love for every human being—is put into practice, nothing can be accomplished. Love can tame even wild animals. I do not know whether you noticed that the other evening, in the slides, I showed you the wilderness of the Jordan, where the monastery of Saint Gerasimos stands.
That is where Saint Mary of Egypt lived, where John the Forerunner lived, and where Christ was baptized—in the wilderness of the Jordan. Saint Gerasimos showed love to a limping lion. He approached it, caught it, and removed the piece of wood embedded in its paw. The lion remained there for the rest of its life and served him. The lion teaches us this lesson: love can soften even the fiercest beasts. And if they never allow themselves to be softened, you will still receive your reward, because you showed love, and Christ will show love to you. That person may not have been worthy of your love.
Holy Scripture tells us here that the first fruit of the Holy Spirit is love: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love.” The second fruit is joy. If there is no love, there is no joy. Doors will constantly be slammed, one after another; faces will be sullen, as long as an elephant’s trunk, and so on. Joy flows from love. Where love exists, it covers everything and makes everything satisfying. Even if all you have is an onion and some bread, if there is love, it is good. But without love, even if you have the finest delicacies, everything disgusts you. The second fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy. But what kind of joy? For there are two kinds of joy.
A person wants to enjoy himself, so he goes out to entertainment venues with his girlfriends or his friends. He goes to a tavern, gambles, and calls that enjoyment. “I’m letting off steam,” he says. Really? Is that what you are doing? Are you letting off steam, or are you about to burst? If we examine it, we will find that we are more likely to burst than to find relief. Let us suppose someone finds his joy in wine. Has he solved anything by drinking and getting drunk? He will make himself vomit so that he can drink again; he is never satisfied. He will put his finger down his throat, empty his stomach, and drink again, because he cannot get enough. And tomorrow he will go back again. He has no lasting joy within him. This is not joy, because the nous, the spiritual intellect, becomes clouded. As you know, the proper word for wine is oinos, not krasi.
The common people call it krasi because it makes the head reel; that is where the name comes from. So when a person gets drunk, what kind of joy is he having? If someone photographed him and later showed him his face, his staggering, and everything else—or recorded him when he began babbling on—if only he could see himself and the sort of “joy” he was having! Another person goes out carousing to enjoy himself, but in the morning his stomach hurts and he needs a bowl of tripe soup to settle it, because he ruined his stomach the night before with all his “joy.” Another wants to take another man’s wife for his pleasure, and ends up with his entrails strung out like prayer beads by a knife, or with acid thrown into his eyes.
Examine the pleasures the world runs after, yet never finds satisfying. The pleasures of the world, whose leader and master craftsman is Satan, are like the carob pods the prodigal son ate. Carob pods are not food for human beings, but for pigs. During the Occupation, on Athinas Street in Athens, there were only carts full of carob pods—not even any greens—as though to show us that we had become prodigals. And you know, when a person bites into a carob pod, he tastes a sickly sweetness, but afterward he spits it out. All sensual pleasures are like that.
Whatever you choose—wine, the flesh, food, or anything else—you taste a little sweetness, and afterward you spit upon the pleasure. You spit upon it. Yet an hour later, after spitting upon it, you seek the same thing again. The next day you want the same thing, and the day after that the same thing, and you are never satisfied. Why? Because this is satanic joy, satanic pleasure. It is not the joy of God. Does that mean we should be gloomy? No. You should not remain gloomy even in the face of death. Paul, writing to the Philippians, says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” But in the Lord—not in the wineglass.
Not in dens of corruption, not at the gambling table, but in the Lord. Not at the racetrack, not in the stadium: rejoice in the Lord. This is why you will see something that may seem strange to you. Christians who, by God’s help, have passed over to the side of Christ regard all these things as rubbish. Other people talk about them, wear themselves out over them, make endless arrangements, and rush here and there, while the Christian remains completely unmoved, as though it had nothing to do with him. More than that, he grieves over the sorry state of other people. They ask him, “How did you become so content? Don’t you need anything?” The person who knows where true satisfaction lies has been filled. Unless Christ fills the human soul, you may gather all the world’s carob pods and all its pleasures,
but they will never satisfy you. Your joy must be in the Lord—an honorable and morally pure joy that comes at no one’s expense: not at the expense of another person’s character, family, or interests. Your joy must not come from trampling upon someone else. Holy Scripture says, “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.” It does not say, “Let him sing worldly songs.” We say, “I’m going out to have fun and let off steam.” Things are going badly for you, you are troubled, and so you sing? Snails do that: when they are burning and being cooked, they make a singing sound. Snails do such things. Mature and cultivated people do not behave like that. They do not act like monkeys. What kind of spectacle is this? If you ever enter a hall after a revel has taken place,
you look around and say, “Were there human beings in here? What came through this place? Was it a jungle? Were wild beasts here?” Yet this is considered joy. It is called joy. And within these so-called joys, the leaven of every kind of corruption begins to ferment. Families are broken apart and young lives are ruined and lost. I will not even speak of souls; leave souls aside for the moment. Even everything else considered valuable today is lost—honor, family, and whatever else you may name. Everything is lost, because the leaven of corruption begins fermenting there. Satan is at work, even at what people call “a small private family gathering.” “It’s just a party among ourselves—nothing more.” Wherever there is dancing, there is
the devil. Once the instruments begin to play, it is impossible for the devil, the dancing master, not to take his place at the front. Do you know what John Chrysostom says in one of his homilies? Some people say, “I went to the dance, but I did not dance.” He gives them an example: “You,” he says, “were like those who were present at that dance on that night.”
They took the head of John the Forerunner. You were a spectator, standing there and watching. Even if you were not personally committing the deed, the devil himself was certainly there, creating that whole situation. Besides, a Christian has no need to listen to such things. Whom is he listening to? Who are these people who supposedly give us joy and entertain us? What sort of people are they? Have you ever examined them? Are they worthy of admiration? They are the ones kicking a ball around, while people shut themselves indoors here and pay twenty dollars each on Sunday morning to watch by satellite as others kick one another in Athens, blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ without restraint. What kind of soul and character does such a person have? Does he have a proper home, any morals, anything honorable at all? Are you not ashamed? Are we not ashamed? What are these things? Have we fallen so low? These things are for flies, my beloved. Flies settle on filth; flies want filth. Is that what delights me? Do horses give me joy? Will those horses and those swindlers devour the fruit of my labor, my wife’s security, my child’s bread, my future, and all my sweat? For what? What is this? “I’m letting off steam,” he says.
You are already bursting, and you will come out in an even worse state. And if you lose your money as well, you will be more miserable still. What enjoyment did you have? Yet man has managed to become entangled in such a condition that he seeks joy where there is great torment and deep sorrow. There is no joy there. Christ alone can give joy. He alone can say to the orphan, the widow, the suffering, and the sorrowful, “Do not weep, woman; do not weep.” At the funeral of the widow of Nain’s son—I do not know whether you have read the passage attentively—a great crowd accompanied her, trying to console the widow.
She was going to the cemetery for the second time. The first time she had buried her departed husband. Then people could tell her, “Take heart. You still have your fine young son. Though his father is gone, you can find consolation in him.” But now the young man himself was dead. In whom could she find consolation? What could anyone say to her now? Before, they told her that her son would henceforth take her husband’s place as her protector and comfort. What could they tell her now? Could anyone stop her tears? No one could stop those tears as she went there for the second time. But when Christ arrived, He said, “Do not weep.” Christ would stop her tears: “Take your child.” This is Christ. We have not come to know Christ. That is why some who hear this homily now, or who hear it in the future, regard such things as fairy tales and dismiss the Christian commandments as nonsense. Do you know what this means? It is spoken of in Psalm 33.
We hear this psalm at the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, when two psalms are chanted at the end. One verse says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Try it. No matter how often I tell you that honey is sweet, unless you dip in your own finger and taste it, you will not know how sweet honey is. Live the Christian life. Ask for mercy, practice metanoia—repentance—and go to Holy Confession. Crush your ego to the ground; cast it aside like a squeezed-out lemon peel. Then you will feel the joy of Christ, and Christ will take you into His care. Then come and meet me again, and tell me who Christ is. Everything may be destroyed, everything may be lost, and you yourself may be perishing, yet He says, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” I cannot explain to you how it happens. With one hand, they take everything away,
and with the other, Christ upholds you. Christ upholds you. This does not mean that a person becomes frivolous and starts whistling into the air. No. He has joy and peace within him even when circumstances are at their worst, even when all his affairs end in the worst possible way. He still has peace within, a hesychia, an inner stillness. It no longer matters. “Now, Lord, I am ready to die and come to You. After all, that is where I am going.” Once the devil tried to frighten Saint Sabbas. Saint Sabbas had left the monastery and gone out into the desert to prove himself as a solitary ascetic. One day, as he was standing there—I do not know exactly where—he heard something behind him. He turned and saw a lion. He was frightened, but then he came to himself.
He turned to the lion and said, “If you have been commanded—that is, if you have a command from God—then here I am. That is where I am going anyway. But if you have no such command, leave me alone.” The lion turned, left behind a cloud of black smoke, and vanished. A person is in danger from nothing, and the smile will never leave his lips once he has come to know Christ. Every kind of worldly joy—the joy of the flesh, the joy of money, the joy of the ego, and all the things for which we offer congratulations—is mostly false. For example, at least in my homeland, we congratulate certain girls when they enter university. A party is held because this girl or that girl was admitted. But how was she admitted? Was it through her own ability?
Another girl, better qualified than she was, lost her place because this one had influential connections. She was pushed aside and now she is weeping, while the other girl’s mother holds a party because her daughter entered university. Is that joy? Is it joy because you managed to take someone else’s place, or to drive someone out so that you could advance? Our joys are false. They are the counterfeit joy of which Christ speaks. So, the Holy Spirit asks for love as His fruit, and He asks for joy. Then Holy Scripture says that the fruit of the Spirit is peace. Is there peace today? Peace has a twofold nature, two aspects: peace with God and peace with other people. Someone says, “I love God.” Really? Then why do you not love your fellow man?
“God and I are on good terms,” you say. But if you are not on good terms with the person you can see, how can you be on good terms with the God you cannot see? Have you ever read Holy Scripture? When is a person not at peace with God? When he puts a screen between himself and God and closes the door. Have you not seen courtyards that once opened into each other, but when the neighbors fall out, they put up a fence or a screen between them? That screen is sin. You place sin between yourself and God and say to Him, “I do not want You. I will do things my own way.” And how many people are like this? Yet they say, “God and I are on good terms.” How many times does the Church say, “Peace be with you,” and “Peace be to all”? How many times? When the curtain opens, the first thing the deacon does is raise his orarion, like a wing, and say, “In peace,”
“let us pray to the Lord.” Continue, deacon: “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” He lays down two kinds of peace as the foundation upon which a person must proceed. We ourselves must live together in love and peace, and we must ask God to send us His peace from above. But if we are in a state of war with God, how can we have peace? We come to the Church, yet nothing comes of it. At the Divine Liturgy we hear, “Let us love one another,” and again, “Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” For human beings must share among themselves the same bond of love that exists among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But there is falsehood among us.
How, then, is this possible? Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. A person stands here at the meeting point of two directions: above him is God, and beside him is his fellow man. He must therefore labor to be reconciled with God and have peace with Him, and also to have peace with his neighbor. Most of us do not have peace with one another. We do not even exchange a good morning, because love is absent—the first virtue, the starting point from which all the other fruits and consequences presented afterward proceed. As I told you earlier, we say, “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,” claiming that we have made peace. But we have not made peace, and this peace is absolutely necessary. Every sin that comes between us and God is a declaration of war against Him.
Consider a married couple. They marry after agreeing from the beginning that they will have children, yet they put a screen between themselves and God. In effect they say, “We lied to You when we came, listened to the prayers, and said we would have children. We have made our own arrangements. You can say whatever You like.” What peace do they have with God? Such people will not walk rightly with God. They do not obey God. They do not want to hear God, and they have no trust in Him. What peace can such a person claim to have, and what place does he have in the Church when he is not on good terms with God? He says to God, “You cannot do it; You are not able. I have arranged everything myself. I know better.” What do you know? Do I not know whether I may take everything from you? Do I not know whether I may leave both of you bent like a Turkish crescent? When I joined you in Holy Matrimony, I told you, “Be fruitful and multiply.” I did not tell you, “Live for pleasure.” You want to enjoy your pleasure like a bourgeois.
The children you will have—and all the children you refuse to have—is that why you take a husband? Why were you working, and for whom? Such a person takes no account of God and has no peace with God. He must make peace with God. And a person makes peace with God when he removes sin from between them. Did Christ not come into the world as our peace? What did He do? He tore apart from top to bottom that partition which stood between us—the veil—and reconciled man to God. Yet man comes along again and puts sin between them. God says, “Fast.” And we say, “If we do not eat, we will waste away.” You do not fast? Then Christ is shut out—the One who gave the law of fasting is shut out. Such a person is in rebellion; he has neither peace nor love. God says, “You shall earn your bread by the sweat of your face.” But how do you earn it? Through the schemes of your own fingers.
God is cast aside, and so is the Gospel. Man is in rebellion against God; he has no peace. The peace God desires is essential, but there is no calm within. It cannot be otherwise, and man will never find rest. Today most people have lost their sleep. Do you know how many take sedatives in order to sleep? How many women take sedatives because they did not want to give birth, and nature takes its revenge on them? Do you know how many psychiatric hospitals there are today? There are more psychiatric hospitals today, and psychiatrists have more patients than physicians do.
I have at hand a United Nations statistic that I could read to you about these people. And all of them are people who have no peace with God. They insist on doing things their own way. The figure given is two million—make that two hundred million. It counts two hundred million of all these people who have lost their sanity, both inside institutions and outside them. That is a United Nations statistic. Love, then, is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. But do we work for peace? When two people are bitter toward one another, do we become a bridge between them, or do we drive them farther apart? “Do you know what he was saying about you?” Could you not instead say, “I heard that so-and-so spoke very highly of you”? Could you not say that? Who told you otherwise?
“He spoke very highly of you.” Could you not say that? Could you not pour water on that fire? You could. Why do you not do it? Because you do not have the grace of the Holy Spirit. Then you would make peace. You know of two parties who have gone to court over five hundred drachmas. Go and pay the sum yourself, so that they may be reconciled in love. You get on the trolleybus, and a quarrel breaks out with the conductor: “He paid.” “He did not pay.” “He paid; he handed over the ten-drachma coin,” and so on. What do you say? “My friends, what is all this? Here, take the fare. Of course you must be right—take it.” And suddenly there is calm. With a five-drachma coin, he makes peace. When have we ever thought of such things—to step into the middle and become bridges wherever there is a divide? Even an ant, when it wants to cross from one side to the other...
Do you know what it does to bridge the gap? It goes and finds a reed, pushes it into place, and bridges the divide. Then all the ants cross over it. This is what a person should become in society. Yet we not only fail to help others bridge their divisions and return to love—friends, children, married couples, brothers and sisters, and all the many cases we know—but we even become a corrosive influence, pushing them farther down the path of separation. Woe to us when that day comes.

Έναν πυρηνικό πόλεμο, με τέτοιους σκοπούς. Δεν έχουμε να πάμε, διότι δεν υπάρχει αγάπη. Η αγάπη του Χριστού, η αγάπη. Όχι αγάπη συνηθισμένη: έχω αγάπη για το δολάριο, έχω αγάπη για τον έρωτα, έχω αγάπη για άλλα ιδεώδη. Ψεύτικα. Αγάπη με θυσία πραγματική για τον συνάνθρωπο δεν υπάρχει σήμερα και δεν υπάρχει ακόμη και μέσα στην οικογένεια. Δεν αγαπάει η γυναίκα τον άντρα, ούτε ο άντρας τη γυναίκα πολλές φορές. Παρότι το σώμα της δεν είναι δικό της, ούτε το σώμα του είναι δικό του. Το παίρνει αυτός, της δείχνει αγαπημένες και πάει, το δίνει σε μια άλλη. Ή το δίνει σε έναν άλλον. Και καταλαβαίνετε, έχουμε τη μοιχεία μέσα μέσα, έχουμε τη διαφθορά. Πού είναι η αγάπη; Πού είναι «έσονται οι δύο εις σάρκα μία»;
δεν θέλουμε εμείς και αυτά τα δύσκολα να γίνουνε εύκολα. Αν ερωτηθούν πολλοί άνθρωποι που έχουν κάποιο πρόβλημα τέτοιο που συζητώ αυτή την ώρα, θα πούνε: «Δεν το μπορώ εγώ αυτό». Όπως πολλοί άκουσαν που μίλησα πέρσι για τη συγχωρητικότητα και είπανε ότι «εγώ είναι αδύνατον, τη μισώ αυτή». Και τι θες εδώ στην Εκκλησία; Και τι θες; Ακούς το Πάτερ ημών: «ἄφες ἡμῖν τὰ ὀφειλήματα ἡμῶν», τα δικά μας, «ὡς καὶ ἡμεῖς ἀφίεμεν». Όσο λες ψέματα, δεν έχεις αφήσει. Βγες έξω, λοιπόν, με τους κατηχουμένους. Τι δουλειά έχεις μέσα στην Εκκλησία;
Άλλη καλύτερή της, διότι είχε μέσον αυτή, την έφαγε, την έβγαλε στην άκρη και κλαίει. Και αυτής κάνει πάρτι η μάνα της γιατί πέτυχε στο πανεπιστήμιο. Είναι χαρά αυτή, ε; Είναι χαρά διότι εσύ κατόρθωσες να πάρεις τη θέση του άλλου; Ή να εκπορθήσεις κάποιον για να προωθηθείς εσύ; Είναι χαρά αυτή; Ε, ψεύτικες οι χαρές οι δικές μας. Είναι ψευτοχαρά από αυτή που λέγει ο Χριστός. Αγάπη, λοιπόν, ζητάει σαν καρπό, χαρά ζητάει. Έπειτα λέει, καρπός του Πνεύματος είναι η ειρήνη. Υπάρχει ειρήνη σήμερα; Η ειρήνη είναι διπλοφυής, έχει δυο όψεις. Ειρήνη προς τον Θεό και ειρήνη προς τον άνθρωπο. «Αγαπώ», λέει, «τον Θεό». Σοβαρά; Και τον άνθρωπο πώς δεν τον αγαπάς;
Έχω πρόχειρο να σας διαβάσω μία στατιστική του ΟΗΕ. Στους ανθρώπους αυτούς. Και είναι όλοι οι άνθρωποι αυτοί οι οποίοι δεν έχουν ειρήνη με τον Θεό. Κάνουν το δικό τους. Σε δύο εκατομμύρια τους βγάζει. Κάνε σε 200 εκατομμύρια. Σε 200 εκατομμύρια τους βγάζει όλους αυτούς τους τρελούς που υπάρχουν μέσα και έξω. Στατιστική του ΟΗΕ. Η αγάπη, λοιπόν, είναι απόρροια Πνεύματος Αγίου. Η χαρά είναι απόρροια Πνεύματος Αγίου. Η ειρήνη είναι απόρροια Πνεύματος Αγίου. Εμείς συνηγορούμε για την ειρήνη; Όταν είναι δύο άνθρωποι πικραμένοι μεταξύ τους, βγαίνουμε γέφυρα μέσα στη μέση ή τους απωθούμε; «Ξέρεις τι έλεγε αυτός;» Δεν μπορείς να πεις: «Έμαθα ότι ο τάδε έλεγε τα καλύτερα λόγια για σένα»; Δεν μπορείς να το πεις; Ποιος σου είπε αυτά τα πράγματα;
