Summary

Satan acts as a hidden third party in humanity’s relationship with God, setting three traps: remaining outside the Church, participating without true devotion, and practicing religion with pride. Hostile rumors and sensational accusations against Orthodox clergy, illustrated by false claims about the relics of Saint Gerasimos, are presented as means of undermining trust in the Church. Even apparently good works can become spiritually corrupt when wealth is dishonestly acquired or charity is motivated by recognition, status, and pride rather than love of God.

Those of you who were with us will remember that we spoke about a third person. I do not know whether you liked the subject or not—not from an artistic or literary point of view, but as a subject. That is, whether there truly is a third person involved in the relationship between man and God. We usually see only two persons: man and God. We do not see the devil; we do not know his schemes; we do not even realize that he exists. And for precisely this reason, we fail to understand the purpose of certain things that exist: the Church, the clergy, and the Mysteries. Their purpose is to undo and cleanse everything produced by this third person. For if we understood

these things, everything would be very different. We would value everything and be attentive to everything. In any case, this evening I wanted to speak further on this subject.

The schemes of this third person, Satan. I do not know whether you remember where we left off: he is the one who sets up and creates three trapdoors to catch man. He will catch him in one of them. The first keeps man far away. The second allows him not to remain far away, but even though he comes near, it is as if he were not there at all. And the third allows him to do everything well, but then brings him down from the right, through pride. Consequently, in all three cases, man serves the devil without realizing it. These are traps, cesspits,

pits, as we say in everyday language—ditches that Satan sets before man. Let us narrow the subject down and consider the Church. The first trap Satan sets for man is to keep him from going to Church. He tells him that he does not need the Church. Why should he have anything to do with the Church, when those who go to Church are worse than those who remain outside it? And it is true that there are people within the Church who are much worse than many outside the Church. Yet there is, of course, a difference in this case. One man is bad while still within the Church.

There, at least, he may one day awaken, one day desire to change, and one day act. But the man who remains outside does not have that opportunity. Consequently, the one inside is in a better position than the one outside. For the one inside believes something; something draws him. He places his hope somewhere, and so he gets out of bed and goes. He even pays the fare, if he needs transportation to get there. He is not like the other man, who accepts nothing at all.

So, if Satan wants to keep a person outside, he can do so through various schemes. We hear accusations every day, for example: “Why should I go to Church? Do you not see what the priests do? Do you not see what the bishops do? I am much better than they are. God wants a pure heart.” But do you have a pure heart? Do I have a pure heart? And where did you cleanse your heart—did you take it to the neighborhood dry cleaner? If you do not go to Church, how will your heart be cleansed? How will your soul be cleansed? There are, of course, many other answers people give to these questions. Another person says, “I do good, while the other man does not. I am better off outside.”

“I may not fast, but that does not matter.” He immediately draws his own conclusion: “That does not matter.” He answers himself and remains outside. He spends his Sunday harming both his body and his soul. Nowadays people leave on Friday and return on Monday; others return on Tuesday. They even manage to steal Monday morning as well—half the day—and come back on Tuesday. For four days there is no Church, nothing at all. Everything revolves around the flesh, relaxation, and bodily pleasure, with nothing beyond that. He remains outside. The priest rings the bell in the morning, and the man curses him for waking him, because he came home at five in the morning from gambling—or the woman

came home from someone’s embrace. He does not want God. He does not want the Church. Satan has put such forces to work within him that he does not want to hear anything about the Church or about Christ. In this way Satan keeps a very large portion of people outside. He keeps one person through the flesh, another through gambling, another through drunkenness, and another through theft. He has countless methods. He makes one a worshipper of nature, another a mountaineer, another a fisherman, and another a hunter. He has countless methods and countless traps, all to keep a person outside the Church. You know these things; you experience them yourselves. Go out on a Sunday morning and see how many people are heading away.

Consider these people: what relationship do they have with God? What relationship do they have with the Church? They cannot act otherwise; the dogcatcher has caught them in his net. You have seen how a dogcatcher catches a dog in his net, carries it away, and puts it in the cage. In the same way, the Apostle Paul says, such a person has been captured alive to do Satan’s will. So he cannot understand these things. They seem imaginary to him, unnecessary, false, exploitative—everything of that kind. He exalts himself above them all. He has invented his own religion and his own Paradise, and he has reached his own conclusions. Whether the person is a man or a woman makes no difference. So this is one great trap: the thought that none of this is necessary, that nothing exists, and that Hell and Paradise are both here in this life.

“The Jesuits invented these things; the priests invented them for their own profit,” and a thousand other claims—and so Satan keeps the person outside. He accuses the Church and the clergy; he finds faults in the Church and in her ministers, and then says, “I am better off outside. Besides, who has ever returned from the other world to tell us that Hell and Paradise exist? Hell is here, and Paradise is here.” He supplies his own answers to the questions that his conscience raises within him. His conscience does not function; no red warning light comes on. For the conscience is man’s red warning light, by which he should recognize whether he is standing rightly or not. But the conscience can be deadened. Then it no longer functions.

I am ill. I have seven illnesses, and the chief problem among them is my blood sugar. I have been diabetic for fifteen years. I have a pancreas, but it does not function. In the same way, people have a conscience, but their conscience does not function. Just as I am without a functioning pancreas, so you become a man without conscience. You have a conscience, but it does not function. You have not allowed it to function. You have lulled it to sleep; you have gagged it. It is no longer a red warning light and no longer reproves you. Other people blush because of you, while you do not blush before them. That is how far man can fall. God, of course, speaks inwardly to every person out of love, through the conscience. But what can He do? We do not allow this conscience to function. Once, when we were speaking about conscience, I told you about a man who had a country house

and could not sleep because his dog kept barking at night. He would go out onto the balcony and shout, “Shut up!” But the dog was not frightened, and before long it began barking again. The man came out once more, angry, and shouted, “Shut up!” The dog fell silent and stopped. After a little while, however, it began barking again. The man became furious, took his double-barrelled shotgun, went outside, fired at the dog, and killed it. Then he went back and lay down to sleep. The dog was no longer barking. But when he went downstairs in the morning, he saw that his shop had been emptied. The dog had been barking because it saw strangers prowling outside. It was crying out to him, “You are in danger!” But the man took his shotgun because he wanted to sleep. Afterwards, though, he mourned the dog. Many people have done the same thing to their conscience. It no longer functions. Have you seen blind people reading with their hands?

You have not? I assure you that there is a system of writing by which blind people read with their hands. With his hand, a blind man finds the page, locates the chapter, continues reading, and so forth. And what do blind people take special care of? Their hands, their fingertips, and their fingers, so that they do not become calloused. They must remain soft, so that through touch they can immediately find what they need and understand where they are. The human soul also needs this: it must not become hardened. For when it becomes hardened, it understands nothing. When does the human soul become hardened? The parable of the sower tells us: when man allows the devil to enter through sin. The devil tramples upon his soul, and the soul becomes hardened. When that cloven-footed one enters and tramples the soul with carnal and worldly sins,

with curses and all manner of other things, then the soul becomes hardened. Everything becomes flat and indistinguishable to such a person. There is no morality, no God, no Gospel. There is only himself: man first, and everything else afterward. He has become hardened because of sin. And we see this in life. As long as a young woman has not yet fallen into an embrace and into sin, she blushes even when she hears an indecent joke. But once she has lost some of her modesty, you are the one who blushes when you see her. Things change; she becomes hardened. A mother may be deeply concerned about leaving her children to go to work. But when she goes to work and begins an affair with her director, she forgets her children, her husband, and everything else. Sin has entered the soul; adultery has entered the soul; fornication has entered the soul. The person has become hardened. He wants nothing, listens to nothing, and sees everything as belonging to him. This is a great trap, which catches many people and keeps them outside

the Church. Naturally, this tactic of Satan appeals to us. The accusation people dwell on most, and the first one they bring forward, is the accusation against the clergy. As I told you one evening when we spoke recently, the only clergy under attack throughout the world are the Orthodox clergy. No other clergy are attacked, because no one outside the Orthodox Church truly possesses the priesthood, and no one has authority over unclean spirits except the Orthodox priest, however sinful he may be. For the works performed by an Orthodox priest are accomplished by the power of the Holy Spirit—that is, the Holy Spirit works through him. The priest does not command the Spirit; rather, the Spirit uses human beings and through them accomplishes His work.

We need to look more deeply into this. Many times we hear various accusations, and then we feel at ease because “they are bad,” while we remain outside the Church and imagine that we are better than they are. A very large group of people remains outside in this way, trapped by Satan. I would therefore ask you to be careful whenever you hear accusations against clergy, whether they come from laypeople or from other clergymen, because there are clergymen who accuse their fellow clergy. Satan has even succeeded in making a clerical raven do what the bird itself will not do. One raven is black, and the other raven is black as well. As the saying goes, “One raven does not peck out another raven’s eye.” Yet even within the Church we often hear accusations, whether direct

or indirect, even from clergymen. Do not believe everything the scandal sheets print. I cannot tell you how many things have been written about that man—what is his name?—the one from Preveza. I even heard that they made a stage play about him. I was away, but I heard they staged it here. And how much they wrote about Prokopios, the Metropolitan of Kefalonia! They said that he sold Saint Gerasimos, that they cut up his relics there with axes, dismembered them, and so forth.

Good heavens! Lies, all lies. Has this matter troubled you? Have I ever spoken to you about it? No, I have not, have I? Well then, would you like to hear it from their own texts? Since I am speaking about the devil and his schemes, listen. I do not know; there may even be people from Kefalonia here who...

believe that Saint Gerasimos has now been sold off as steaks, forequarters, ribs, and I do not know what else.

What I am about to read to you comes from the recent trial of Kollatos. The proceedings of the trial were published in the August 19 issue of Akropolis. In one scene, besides the Metropolitan of Preveza, the play also brings in Prokopios, the Metropolitan of Kefalonia, in connection with Saint Gerasimos. It says the following: “And two more scenes from the play. Metropolitan Prokopios of Kefalonia and the nuns of the Holy Monastery of Saint Gerasimos appear. They begin announcing the fixed prices for the Saint’s relics: the five toes of the left foot...”

…000 drachmas. Twelve left ribs at 50,000 drachmas each come to 600,000 drachmas. Twelve right ribs at 60,000 drachmas each come to 720,000 drachmas.” And so on. This is a play being performed here, and we go and pay to see it. It continues: “Then, as the lights go out, the Metropolitan of Kefalonia appears, takes an axe in his hands and brandishes it; and in the darkness the thud of the axe blows is heard as the relic of Saint Gerasimos is dismembered.” He chops and strikes, cutting off ribs, legs, and fingers. And they call this a play.

Yet while this was being performed, four or five months earlier, when the controversy was raging, a committee of medical scientists had gone to Kefalonia, examined the matter, and issued a report with their findings.

Their findings were as follows. I am preserving their own wording here. The newspaper Akropolis obtained the expert report prepared by the doctors Georgios Avlamis, chairman of the committee, Panagiotis Michas, and Ioannis Antonatos—who was evidently a Kefalonian—

concerning their examination of the relic of Saint Gerasimos the previous Sunday. This is the expert assessment of the scientific committee. I have also been told that Avlamis, the chairman and head of the committee, felt the Saint’s pulse and found it beating. It is said that this man suffered for twenty days afterward. That is not written in the report; I know it from other information. But the report itself says: “The doctors state that they established the following.” These are the committee’s own words. “In the area beneath the left side of the jaw, there is a loss of soft tissue, so that the bone of the lower jaw is visible.”

This is due to deterioration that occurred a very long time ago. What can be seen here beneath the Saint’s relic is not something recent. Second, the little finger of the right hand is missing from its base. I do not know whether you are aware that this has been so for a hundred years; it was given as a blessing to the Metropolis of Kefalonia.

That is all on that point. Third: both feet show areas of loss on the soles, caused by the passage of time. In other words, underneath, where we would say the Saint stands, the feet appear worn away. But this too is due to time, according to science and according to these very doctors. Fourth:

The big toe of the left foot is completely missing. The big toe is entirely absent from the left foot. I once happened to be present at the exhumation of a relic. The hands lay like this, and we did not know that the whole relic was still inside. The hoe came down from above and struck the hand here; we still have that relic. In the same way, the hoe struck a toe of the right foot as we were bringing the relic out, because of the way the feet were positioned. We do not know what happened in this case. The report does not say, nor does it appear that the toe was recently cut off and sold, as they claim. Fifth: on the rear surface of the leg—what we call the calf—there is a strip of skin missing, ten centimeters long and two centimeters wide.

A piece of skin has been removed from the calf, two centimeters by ten centimeters, showing to the naked eye signs of a relatively recent detachment. But how can you measure what “recent” means here? The surrounding tissue may be four hundred years old, while this piece may have been removed two hundred years ago, for example. Would there not be some difference between the two, when the Saint’s relic is four hundred years old? The report does not say it happened yesterday or in very recent times. The impression that the detachment is relatively recent arises from comparing it with a similar adjoining area of damage that is clearly older. That is how they conclude that this strip of skin, ten centimeters long and two wide, was removed later.

That is the expert report. Is anything missing? Nothing is missing. Yet this man now takes an axe and chops off ribs, while holding an auction: fifty thousand for the left ribs, sixty thousand for the right, and on he chops. He knows about this expert report. People pay to go and hear and see these things, and then they read the false reports. Mr. Kollatos knows the findings of this committee of doctors. Meanwhile, people outside the Church say, “You cannot fool me! They went to Kefalonia and sold the relic.” But the relic is still there. And now Prokopios speaks. In his written defense, Prokopios addresses the supposedly recent removal of the piece measuring ten centimeters in length

and two centimeters in width—that missing strip of skin, ten by two centimeters. This is what all the uproar is about. It was compared with another piece nearby that had been removed four hundred years ago. Therefore, the removal of the newer piece would appear recent even if it had taken place a hundred years ago. There would still be a difference of three hundred years, and its color would be different. “But I,” the Metropolitan points out, “have been serving as bishop in Kefalonia for only fourteen years.” These are the things the devil fabricates through his instruments. And we stand there open-mouthed, saying, “Did you not see what the newspapers wrote?” Do not tell me otherwise. These are their own words, taken from their own texts and newspapers. They are not mine. Do you understand? Do you know how many people this drives away from the Church? A few days ago, when I was speaking abroad, I showed them the entire relic as it is today.

Their hair stood on end. “What is going on? Where are we? What kind of world are we living in? Can we believe anything written in the newspapers or shown on television?”—just as I have been telling you. And yet many people remain outside the Church because of such things. I am not saying that all clergymen are saints—God forbid. Our Christ chose twelve men, and four of them had faults. He chose them Himself: one sold Him, another denied Him, another complained against Him, and so on. Why should we expect otherwise among so many clergy today, in a society that has no better human material to offer? This is the society we have today; we have no better material. The so-called good families make their good sons doctors, men of money, livestock breeders, or lawyers.

They make them engineers or generals. Why do they not offer them to become priests? Why do they not draw near to the Church? Because they hate the Church. And yet they expect someone to bury them tomorrow and to accompany them beyond the grave. Then these matters will be settled. Then we shall understand whether we should have remained outside the Church. Then we shall understand whether we should have spent all day, like woodpeckers, pecking away at the clergy. Then we shall understand the harm we did, and we shall say, “Oh, if only we had someone—even a man with the greatest sins in the world—so long as he wore an Orthodox priest’s stole.” But by then it will be too late. That is why I say that, as far as possible, we must guard against this trap that Satan sets to keep people outside the Church.

There are two ways in which this attitude is cultivated. Perhaps these thoughts are heard and found among you and among us as well. Perhaps people around us think this way, and Satan uses these thoughts to keep them outside the Church.

It is better to be outside your own home than outside the Church. Whatever may happen within her, the Church is always holy, and a way must be found to overcome the obstacles. Besides, as you know, all those who are far from the Church are tormented. They are all sorrowful. They supposedly go away to enjoy themselves, but return more miserable. They supposedly go away to rest for four days, but come back even more exhausted.

And then there are the accidents that happen on Sunday hunting trips. How many people have been killed, even brothers together. At Agios Konstantinos, a car went into the sea with all seven people inside. Continuing from these thoughts: after the first trap Satan sets, by which he keeps many people outside the Church, he sets a second trap for anyone who escapes him. Suppose someone decides, since we are speaking about the Church, to go to church. “Oh, I go to church.” But how do you go? When do you go? “I went to church.” How could that be? The service has not even ended yet. “Well, I lit my candle.” My dear fellow, does the Church need your candle? What exactly did you express by lighting it? Is it written anywhere that once a person lights a candle, he may leave with his debt paid and everything in order?

Satan catches him right there. “I went to church.” When did you go? Did you arrive at the final blessing? Did you arrive after the Gospel? Did you wait for the third bell before going? Do you ask which bell has rung before you get up in the morning? And even if you do go, Satan catches you there. I want you to go, but to go every Sunday morning. I want you to go prepared, to go to church with a purpose, to remain there, and to be the last to leave. A person should strive to be the first to enter the Church and the last to leave. If you were in love with a man, would you want to arrive at the last moment? Or would you go early and want to be the last to leave? And if you were a man in love with a woman, what would you want her to do?

How do we think about this? How do we behave when material, fleshly, and worldly things are concerned, and how do we behave when it concerns God? We give God only the leftovers: “That is enough for Him. He does not complain or protest.” What do you mean? Would other people not take offense if we left early or arrived late? They would, so we make sure to arrive properly. You are afraid of offending the world, but are you not afraid of offending Christ? And yet, however patient He may be with us today, tomorrow He will show us the same disposition that we showed toward Him. I repeat, my beloved: even if we escape Satan and go to church, we often go simply to punch a timecard and say, “Here, we are present.” Yes, let us say that you came.

You came—but what are you doing here? As we have said before, Saint Basil the Great holds a different view: “A good thing is not good unless it is done well.” The good, he says, is not truly good unless it is done in the right way. There are also people who perform good works while others show no concern at all. “Let Evangelia go to the Ministry of Social Welfare; let her go to the charitable society and get something. That other man gives nothing,” someone says. “But I give.” Where does what you give come from? Do you give from your own sweat, or from stolen money? Where does it come from? What is this thing you are giving? Is it honestly yours? Does it belong to you? Did it come from your labor, your blood, and your sweat? Where did it come from? Many people even become celebrated benefactors.

They become donors, and their names are written on great plaques. Yes, but where did the money come from? You give it, certainly—but can it withstand the judgment of God’s righteousness? Where does it come from, and why do you give it? How do you give it? Is it so that your name will be written there? Many people give for that reason. They do not give for the cause itself; they give because of the person asking, or so that they may gain a position. Once, abroad—in Egypt, to be precise—a bishop asked the Greeks living there for money to build a secondary school, so that the Greek children could learn Greek language and letters. He sent a notice to all the great merchants, to the wealthy in general, and collected five hundred pounds. These were not gold sovereigns but paper pounds, nowhere near enough to build even a small part of such a school, let alone the whole thing.

When he saw their response in practice, he devised a clever plan.

He issued the following announcement:

“We still need a further sum for the school, and I call upon all our fellow Greeks to contribute their offering. They may be certain that their names will be inscribed in letters of gold on a special plaque of donors and benefactors. Whoever gives the most will be listed first, the second-highest donor second, the third third, and so on.” Within a week, I do not know how many hundreds of thousands had been collected. The school was built, the plaque was prepared and covered with a cloth, and a date was set for the blessing of water and the unveiling of the plaque.

Luxury cars lined up outside, each forty feet long. All the sharks who had given money arrived to see where their names stood on the plaque. Had someone perhaps given more than they had? What position had each of them secured? They were all so anxious that they paid no attention to the blessing of water, to anything else being said, or even to the purpose for which the school had been built: to teach the Greek children the Greek language—the language of the angels, the language of Heaven, the language of the Gospel. They were simply waiting for the bishop to pull the cord so they could see where their names appeared. The moment came. The cord was pulled, and instead of names they saw these words: “Thus was this work accomplished through the vainglory of the Greeks of Egypt.”

They had not given the money so that the school might be built. They had given it out of vainglory, so that their names would be inscribed. God takes no account of such things. God takes no account of them at all. God sees why a person does something. And Satan sticks his tail into it to stop him from doing it rightly, just as he sticks his tail into your churchgoing: he lets you go to Church, but not properly, not as you should. “Ah, but people will start talking about the priests.”

So you go to Church, but you receive nothing. “You ask and do not receive.” Why? Because you ask wrongly. Of course, there are legitimate occasions when some people cannot go to Church early in the morning. They remain at home, but their soul is in the Church. A person may have a baby, a sick elder, a husband, or a wife who needs care. They may be unable to go at all, or they may go later, even at the very last moment. Such involuntary absence is justified. But if I am perfectly well and ask, “Has the third bell rung yet?”—if I am perfectly well and sit down to eat breakfast before going to Church—if I am perfectly well and the priest has already preached at length while I am reading the Acropolis, listening to the news, or watching television—that does not pass before God. Satan takes that whole portion for himself. Christ asks sacrifice of man, because He sacrificed Himself—not for His own sake, but for man’s sake—and now man must make this sacrifice for his own soul. This, then, is the second trap Satan sets: “Yes, go—but there is no need to go early.”

“There is no need. He will still be in time for the antidoron, the blessed bread after the Liturgy. He can take it and eat it the following week. It is not the end of the world.” So once again, a person approaches the Church in his own way, and Satan has a share even in that. Here is a second pit into which many—very many—have fallen. Some even plan to go, take the antidoron from the candle counter, and leave. They do not even venerate the priest’s hand. Others send a little boy inside to bring it to them before the prayer over it has even been read; they do not know when the antidoron is blessed. I remember speaking once at Saint George on Lycabettus Hill. There was a man who would take antidoron and leave so that he would not have to listen to the speaker. So that day I arranged to speak at the Gospel reading. Yet I saw him get up and leave once again. The devil wanted him to leave so that he would not hear—and it was, in fact, the Sunday of the Gadarene demoniacs.

That is the day whose central theme is the devil, yet Satan drove him away even on that day. The evil spirit influences all such people and stirs them up to leave. Abroad, I met a man who had become a Protestant. He had become a Protestant because of the noise, the conversations, and many other things that take place in the Orthodox Church. “I went to the Protestant church,” he said. “It is peaceful there, because there are no devils. They already have them inside themselves, so the devils do not go there; Satan does not trouble them.” And why else did he leave? He said, “I will tell you something that happened.” I have no reason not to believe the man. On Great and Holy Friday, women were talking around the Cross while the Archimandrite was speaking about the events of the Cross.

“They were right in front of me,” he said, “very close by, talking about haircuts, hairstyles, and the hairdresser. At one point I heard one woman say something to another while the Crucified Christ was only a yard and a half away, and the Archimandrite stood another yard and a half away speaking about the great event of Great and Holy Friday. What am I to do in this Church?” Many times, we ourselves are responsible for the fall of other, weaker people—we who supposedly know everything, we supposedly holy men and women who pay no attention. We become the cause; Satan gains the advantage, and people either leave the Church or come only briefly so that they will be disturbed less. Many things happen. We must be careful, yet we are not as careful as we ought to be.

We insist on courtesy in the drawing room, but we are not courteous in Church. We do not want others to bother or disturb us, yet people are constantly bothering and disturbing one another. Where can you go? You stand near someone, and the person beside you recites the Liturgy into your ear. Very well, I came to participate in the Liturgy; I did not come for you to serve the Liturgy to me. He says the priest’s parts and the chanter’s parts as well. Even if he knows how to chant and has some sort of voice, he still disrupts things. Out of pride, because he knows it all by heart, he keeps reciting. Then another person cannot remain in his place—especially nowadays—so he gets up and leaves. Someone may say, “I wanted to stay, but that man drove me away.” You should have endured. Satan placed his instrument there to drive you away, and you fell into the trap. Does a doctor abandon his patient? No. Is the doctor endangered by the patient? No. Why not? Because he has been vaccinated.

You too must be vaccinated. But you have not yet received the vaccine, and that is precisely why this person and that person trouble you. What I am saying is true, but these things do not justify our getting up and leaving, or going later so that we will be less tired or less tempted. So it is not enough for a person merely to go to Church. What matters is how he goes and why he does it. The same is true of an act of charity or of words we speak. Many times, even when we say something good about others, we do so with an ulterior motive. Christ looks within: He sees how a person speaks and why he speaks, not merely what he says. When He watched those putting money into the treasury, He observed how they gave, not how much they gave—how each one gave. And He praised the poor widow with her two small coins, saying, “She has put in more than all of you.” God sees differently. That is why a person should enter the Church with fear and ask, “How should I go?”

Yes, I go; I must go. But how should I go so that I may be benefited, without harming either myself or others—so that, instead of leaving certain germs behind, I do not come away carrying other germs? This too is a trap of Satan. If someone escapes the first trap, by which Satan kept him from entering at all, Satan then makes him enter in Satan’s own way. A person goes to Church but does not receive Holy Communion. Then why does he go to Church? The purpose of the Church is that he should receive Holy Communion. “But can I always be worthy?” Then why did you come here? Did you come to Hades? The divine John Chrysostom says, “You have confessed yourself unworthy.” You bring your child to receive Holy Communion. With what fasting will the child commune, and with what purity of the nous—the spiritual intellect? With yours, the mother’s. Just as the child was baptized through the faith of the mother and godmother and was cleansed from ancestral sin, so it is also with Holy Communion.

Yet you, the mother, kill the other children, and your hands are stained with blood. How will God give His blessing to your child? How do you expect to fast in the body? How do you expect to fast with your stomach? How can you refuse to abandon sin? How will God bless you? A person must take these things into account. This is how Satan lets someone go to Church, but in the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos Trypiti in Aigio, during Vespers, there was a demon-possessed woman. The large crowd had stopped, and people were going forward a few at a time to venerate. Then the demon seized her, and she began to speak. A policeman stepped forward and said something to her. “You, shut up!” she replied. He did not know that she was possessed and that the demon was speaking.

Then a grand lady sitting in front, just ahead of the possessed woman, said, “That is no way to behave. Have you no respect for this man here?” “Be quiet, woman!” the possessed woman answered. “And you—where do you not go? You come here to venerate the Most Holy Theotokos, do you? Where have you come from? You have come from your child’s godfather, haven’t you? Where have you come from, woman?” “Silence!” the policeman said, and struck her across the face. “You adulterer!” she cried. “You wear the crown on your head, yet what are you doing with your sister-in-law? And now you have come here for the Most Holy Theotokos to protect you?” What had they done? What had they done? Three people—two belonging to the devil—and we were going to venerate the Most Holy Theotokos. Do you know how many people like that there are? “I venerated Saint Demetrios the other day”—after committing who knows what filth. But the Saint does not speak, and we receive nothing. Go and light your little candle, but do not stop your sin; do not tear down the bed of sin.

Do not have children; do not remain a woman, become a man; do not remain a man, become a woman. That is what I am telling you—and then go and light little candles, burn incense, and even receive Holy Communion. Yes, tell me that I am lying, and I will ask your forgiveness. But that is how matters stand. I am speaking to you from personal experience.

Then again, someone may go to Church with purpose, humility, preparation, and the fear of God. He may truly remain until the end and approach Holy Communion as well. In other words, he escapes Satan: Satan neither keeps him outside nor lets him enter merely as a formality. He enters first and leaves last. Yet this person is in just as much danger as the others. Someone will ask, “But if he did everything rightly, why is he in danger?” Because that fellow will come up beside him and say, “That is the way! Truly! Do you not see what is happening back there? But you—yes, you have done well.” And the man believes it: “Yes, I did it.” Satan has now cast him down from the right, persuading him either that he did everything well or that he alone did well while everyone else did badly. This woman remained to the end and received Holy Communion; this man remained to the end and received Holy Communion with humility. He received the antidoron carefully and even noticed the little crumb on someone’s head. He did everything correctly. And Satan drove him out from there as well, and that portion too is lost. Everywhere—in the fullest sense of the word—everywhere. Where can a person guard himself? Where can he guard himself? Yet Christians do not know this personage who is seventy-five hundred years old, as I told you the other day. I mean the one we call “the one outside.” Who is this “one outside”? Is Apollo inside us? No, it is the one outside, playing with us in his own way, and we do not understand it at all. This is his art. He pursues man and will go on pursuing him

until he enters Paradise—if he enters Paradise. There is a beautiful account in the writings about Saint Anthony the Great. An angel had taken the soul of Saint Anthony the Great and was carrying it away. The devil called out to him, “Ah, Anthony, you have escaped me!” “Not yet,” Saint Anthony the Great replied. Do you hear that humility? His soul was in the Angel’s hands. It had left the body behind, and he no longer had any opportunity to sin. Yet he would not allow the thought to enter his nous, the spiritual intellect: “Yes, I escaped you. I defeated you.” He did not say such a thing, because humility alone defeats Satan. Satan was asked three times:

“What do you fear?” “Humility.” “What else do you fear?” “Humility.” “What else besides humility do you fear?” “Humility.” “That is the only thing, Anthony, that I cannot do,” he said. “You fast, and I fast. You keep vigil, and I keep vigil. But the one thing you do, I cannot do.” Anthony asked what that was, and Satan answered, “Humility.” Do not let the thought ever pass through your nous that you are something. Do not be like those supposed visionaries we mentioned earlier, who present themselves by saying, “Christ writes prayers for me.” You heard it at the beginning. “I speak with the Most Holy Theotokos. I speak with His Saint. I speak with the Saint.” Do not let such a thought enter your nous. You are lost—utterly lost—and Satan has taken you.

Pride is what drove man out of Paradise. Pride. Christianity is delicate and exacting work, my beloved; it is not a rough concrete shell where we pour the pillars and a slab and then move into the building. What gives a building its value and makes it habitable and useful is the fine work that must follow.

It is the work others do inside that turns the rough concrete shell into something useful. So you put up two icons, light a candle, and attend Vespers and Matins (Orthros). Does it follow that you have secured Paradise? Has the person now become a work of art, so that he may become a temple of the Holy Spirit, that the Holy Trinity may dwell within him, and that he may become one with Christ? That is not enough. One device, then, upon another.

A person must beseech Christ to guard him from Satan. I remember receiving a letter years ago from the Home for the Incurably Ill. I was not counted worthy to meet that soul, and I do not know whether she has now fallen asleep in the Lord; I believe she has. She had been there for many years and was evidently a young woman. She used to write to me, and I would send her some books, cassette tapes, and other things. On one feast day she sent me both greetings and thanks, telling me how greatly she was comforted by what she received there, in that furnace of suffering—her bed of infirmity. At the end she wrote: “My heartfelt prayer, Mr. Panagopoulos, is...”

“May the Lord protect you from the snares of Satan.” It was the first time I had ever heard such a wish. I am sixty-five years old, I correspond with thousands of people, and I have heard all kinds of good wishes, according to what each person feels as the heart overflows. But I had never received a wish with such meaning and such seriousness. I was deeply struck by the discernment of that young woman. “With all my heart,” she wrote, “I pray that, in return for the good you are doing for me here in my bed in this way, the Lord may protect you from the snares of Satan.” If you read the life of Anthony the Great, you will also find that when he went out in the morning, he would stoop down in one place and lower himself in another.

He would turn aside from the road and then fall down again. A disciple was with him and thought he had gone mad. “What are you doing, Father, Abba?” he asked. “What is all this? What kind of games are these?” “My child,” he replied, “do you not see the tricks and snares of Satan?” He was taking care that no snare should catch him, not even a human one. And what do we do? We make a great commotion outside the door first thing in the morning. How could we possibly get up to pray and arm ourselves, so that we might go out covered by prayer and Satan might not ensnare us? For John Chrysostom says that when a person leaves home in the morning with prayer—not one minute of prayer after half an hour before the mirror, but the other way around, spending a good amount of time in prayer—then that person goes out armed.

As he steps through the door, let him say, “I renounce you, Satan, and all your pomp and worship, and I unite myself to You, Christ,” while at the same time making the sign of the Precious Cross. Then, he says, even if not merely Satan but Beelzebub himself should appear, he cannot harm that person or set a snare for him. But we have not learned this, because we do not want to give up sin. We rush because our girlfriend will be taking the same bus; we rush because our boyfriend will be taking the same bus, and so on. We make a great commotion, banging things about, getting ourselves ready, and then we leave—but we run eagerly toward sin. How can grace remain upon us? And why should Satan need to catch us outside, when he has already caught us inside our own home? I thought I might add these things about the tricks of Satan to the subject of that third party whom we spoke about yesterday.

The Christian does not know him. Others know him from the opposite side and make use of him. Abroad—I do not know whether you are aware of this—there are thousands of churches where people do not worship Christ but worship Satan. There are even services offered to Satan. All the other means that exist—mediums, spiritualism, and other such snares and practices, including fire-walking rites—all belong to him. He is their master, their musician, their commander-in-chief. He holds everything in his hands and deceives us in his own way. If we truly desire to escape him, we must struggle a little. And if we struggle a little, Christ will give us much. We must not expect Satan to leave us alone; he will not. Even if we are present at the Divine Mystagogy, even if we stand before the Holy Chalice, he will attack us there as well. In our beautiful Church we say:

“I stand before the doors of Your temple, yet I do not turn away from my dreadful logismoi, my intrusive thoughts.” Even at that moment he comes to stir us up and seize our nous, our spiritual mind, by having someone annoy us. There goes one grandmother trying to be first; there goes another, rushing to give her child Holy Communion first so that the child will not be defiled by the others. A thousand and one slanders and devilish provocations! And notice: until the words “With fear of God” are heard, there is calm. But as soon as “With fear of God” begins, the whole church is thrown into turmoil. If everyone simply remained one step back, there would be no reason to trample one another, and none of this would happen. Who causes it? The master craftsman causes it. And in whom does he cause it? In us who submit to him. For if we truly wished otherwise, each person would remain in place, those who should go first would go first, and within one, two, three, or five minutes we would all depart with a blessing—without causing harm, without making the priest spill the Holy Communion, and without putting him in an awkward position.

I repeat, I have offered these thoughts as best I could, and I pray that God will protect us.

δεν μπορούσε να κοιμηθεί, διότι ο σκύλος εγάβγιζε τη νύχτα, και έβγαινε στο μπαλκόνι και του έλεγε: «Σκασμός!». Μα δεν φοβήθηκε ο σκύλος. Αλλά σε λίγο ξαναγάβγιζε ο σκύλος. Ξανά έβγαινε θυμωμένος: «Σκασμός!». Σκασμός ο σκύλος, σταμάτησε. Έφτασε από λίγο, ξαναγάβγιζε ο σκύλος. Θυμώνει, πάει, παίρνει το δίκαννο, πάει, του δίνει μια φωτιά, σκοτώνει τον σκύλο. Και πήγε και έπεσε εκεί και κοιμήθηκε. Δεν γάβγιζε τώρα ο σκύλος. Αλλά το πρωί, όταν κατέβηκε κάτω, είδε ότι το μαγαζί του το είχαν αδειάσει. Ο σκύλος γάβγιζε διότι έβλεπε απ' έξω ξένους να περιφέρονται. Του φώναζε: «Ε, κινδυνεύεις!». Αλλά αυτός έβγαλε το δίκαννο γιατί ήθελε να κοιμηθεί. Αλλά τον έκλαψε όμως. Αυτό έχουν κάνει πολλοί στη συνείδησή μας. Δεν λειτουργεί. Έχετε δει τυφλούς να διαβάζουν με τα χέρια;

Εκτός τα δυστυχήματα τα οποία γίνονται στα κυνήγια τις Κυριακές που βγαίνουν. Πόσος κόσμος δεν έχει σκοτωθεί, πόσοι μεταξύ των αδελφών έχουν σκοτωθεί. Ένα αυτοκίνητο στον Άγιο Κωνσταντίνο και οι εφτά επέσανε μέσα στη θάλασσα. Στη συνέχεια αυτών των σκέψεων, μετά από την πρώτη παγίδα που στήνει ο Σατανάς και κρατάει πολλούς ανθρώπους έξω, έπειτα, αν κανένας του φύγει, του στήνει τη δεύτερη παγίδα. Αν ένας το αποφασίσει, παραδείγματι, μια και μιλούμε περί Εκκλησίας, να πάει στην Εκκλησία. «Α, εγώ πηγαίνω στην Εκκλησία». Σαν πώς πηγαίνεις εσύ στην Εκκλησία; Πότε πηγαίνεις στην Εκκλησία εσύ; «Εγώ επήγα στην Εκκλησία». Και πώς; Η Εκκλησία δεν σκόλασε ακόμα. «Ε, άναψα το κερί μου». Ως πειραιέ, η Εκκλησία έχει ανάγκη από το κερί το δικό σου; Τι εκδήλωση έκανες με το κερί που άναψες; Αναφέρεται πουθενά ότι, όταν ανάψει ένα κερί ο άνθρωπος, πάει, ξεχρεώθηκε, εντάξει είναι;

Στέκει εκεί που τον πιάνει. «Εγώ πήγα στην Εκκλησία». Πότε πήγες στην Εκκλησία; Πήγες στο «Δι’ ευχών»; Πήγες μετά το Ευαγγέλιο; Πήγες μετά την τρίτη καμπάνα; Ρωτάς τι καμπάνα χτύπησε για να σηκωθείς το πρωί; Και αν πήγες, σε πιάνει εκεί. Εγώ σε θέλω να πας, αλλά να πας κάθε πρωί. Εγώ σε θέλω να πας και να πας και ετοιμασμένος, να πας για κάποιο σκοπό στην Εκκλησία, να πας και να μείνεις και τελευταίος. Ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να συναγωνίζεται, να πηγαίνει πρώτος στην Εκκλησία και να φεύγει τελευταίος. Αν είσαι ερωτευμένη με έναν, θα ήθελες να πας την τελευταία στιγμή ή θα πήγαινες από το πρωί και θα ήθελες να φύγεις τελευταία; Αν είσαι εσύ άλλος ερωτευμένος με μία, τι θα ’θελες να έκανε;

Κάνε κι εσύ εμβόλιο, αλλά δεν έχεις κάνει εμβόλιο ακόμα, γι’ αυτό ακριβώς σε πειράζει και ο Α και ο Β. Είναι αλήθειες αυτές που λέω εγώ τώρα, όμως δεν μας δικαιολογούν να σηκωθούμε να φύγουμε ή να πάμε αργότερα για να κουραστούμε ή να πειραστούμε λιγότερο. Δεν είναι λοιπόν αρκετό ο άνθρωπος να πάει, αν παραδεχτούμε, στην Εκκλησία, αλλά πώς πάει και γιατί το κάνει, ή την ευεργεσία ή το λόγο που λέγεται πολλές φορές, και κάτι που λέμε καλώς των άλλων το λέμε με υπολογισμό. Και ο Χριστός βλέπει το εσωτερικό, πώς το λέει, γιατί το λέει, δεν βλέπει τι λέει. Όταν παρακολουθούσε αυτούς που βάζανε χρήματα στο γαζοφυλάκιο, έβλεπε πώς βάζουν, όχι πόσα βάζουν, πώς βάζει ο καθένας. Και αυτό επήνεσε, τη χηρούλα με το δίλεπτο, και λέει: «Αυτή έβαλε τα περισσότερα από όλους εσάς». Αλλιώς βλέπει ο Θεός. Γι’ αυτό ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να φοβάται που μπαίνει στην Εκκλησία. Πώς θα πάω;
