Summary

Christian life is perfected through attention to everyday faults, especially sins of speech that contradict one's profession of faith. The deaths of Ananias and Sapphira show the gravity of lying to the Holy Spirit while pretending to offer everything to the early Church. Scripture permits moderate medicinal use of wine while condemning intoxication, which damages health, families, spiritual vigilance, and human dignity.

This evening, by the grace of God, I would like to speak about two matters which, I think, may have a place in this effort of ours to become a little better than we have been.

As I said in passing on another evening, Christianity is made up of details. If we pay attention to them, it is the sum of all these details that forms the whole edifice and reveals a person to be a true Christian. We...

It is true that we have good qualities, but we also have faults. We must identify these faults and try, little by little, to cast them off and correct them.

I do not know whether you have noticed how much effort painters make to retouch a face, an icon, or a painting, so that they can express more fully the meaning they intend. Christianity is like that too. Someone says, “I am a Christian, but I steal.”

Thank you. “I am a Christian, but I blaspheme. I believe, but I blaspheme Christ.” How can that be? How can a Christian blaspheme? It cannot be; it is a discordant note. “I am a Christian, but I commit fornication.” How can you commit fornication if you are a Christian? “I am a Christian, but I lie.” How can that be? These things do not belong together. And although they do not belong together—and, when the matter is discussed, we all ultimately admit that they are incompatible with Christianity and with being a Christian—we still make no effort to correct or at least reduce these faults and weaknesses of ours. So this evening I wanted to speak about what is called “the salt of truth.” That is how people speak of lying in theology: the lie is called the salt of truth. They say that nothing can be done without a lie.

If Christ were to appear before us simply as a physician, take a spoon, and examine only our tongue, that alone would be enough for Him to send us to Hell. You have seen how doctors ask us to open our mouths and examine our tongue, so that they may discover what illness we might have. Well, whose tongue is free from lies? How many lies has each of us told today alone—lies going back through our Christian life, or even from before it, for however many years? Or shall I say something more, which you may consider an exaggeration? Who, to this day, when going to confession, has said that he also tells lies? Perhaps one or two out of a hundred.

The rest treat lying as an everyday staple, without realizing what they are serving or what part they are playing. It is difficult for a person to be truthful. It is difficult. And there lies his worth as a Christian: whether his “yes” can mean yes and his “no” mean no. “Anything more than this comes from the devil,” Christ says. It is true that we do not live in a society where we can easily tell the truth. That is the difficult part, and our prayer must be daily and fervent: “My Christ, when will I be able to speak the truth?” Today a person cannot tell the truth. If you tell the truth, you are ruined, and so you feel compelled to lie.

When a tongue speaks lies, that tongue does not belong to God; it belongs to the devil. It serves the devil and imitates the devil. Have you ever given serious thought to this sin? Have you ever tried to discover who the first liar was, who told the first lie?

Whose lackeys, then, are we? In the case of various inventions, we ask who stood at the beginning—perhaps Archimedes, Hippocrates, or someone else. But who stands at the beginning of lying? Do you know who it is? The one depicted with little horns and a tail. Children, whether we like it or not, it is he whom we serve, and it is his designs that we further.

He is the arch-liar, the first liar. And what was his first lie? You remember it from school. He deceived our first-created ancestors about God; he lied to them about God. When God told the human beings not to eat, the devil went and told them to eat. And to persuade them, he lied. He told them, “God told you not to eat from this out of envy and jealousy, because then you will become gods.” So he is the first liar. In the Apocalypse, he is called “the ancient serpent,” the liar, the devil. If, then, for one reason or another, our tongue resorts to lies, it becomes defiled. That is precisely why a person must...

take care not to lie. And if, for one reason or another, he does lie—because he thinks there is some reasonable cause to do so, or not to tell the truth—he must make a point of confessing it. For this is the one sickness of the soul that does not reach confession. I repeat: perhaps one or two out of a hundred will say, “Among my sins, I have also told lies.” But most of us do not. Lying has managed to find a place both in the royal palace and in the poor man’s hut, both in the Patriarchate and in the monastic cell.

It is found in the marketplace and in the palace. There is no place where lies are not told. Look at royal courts: they cannot function without lies. They are filled with flatterers who lie from morning until night in order to obtain offices and favors from the powerful. In the workplace, lying is joined to slander, because we slander a colleague in order to secure our own position. There the lies are blatant. In commerce, our lies appear in our words, on the scales, and in our measurements. Lying has many faces. Wherever a person turns, he encounters it. A liar cannot be a Christian. He cannot be a child of God.

The children of God do not lie. Of course, this is difficult today, especially in the society and the world in which we live. I am not giving this talk tonight because I have succeeded in eradicating lying from my own life. No; I too am caught up in it. But I want to help reduce it, if possible, and to have it recognized among our sins.

We consider it serious to steal, to dishonor someone, to blaspheme, or to slander. Let lying also be included among these sins. Those who ever come to confession should mention that they tell lies—that through their tongue the devil has tripped them up and defiled it.

That is why I say that most people hinder the grace of the Lord from coming upon them because of falsehood. A thousand years before Christ, through David—specifically in Psalm 11, verse 4—God issued this warning: “May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips.” Thus, the Lord says that He will destroy deceitful lips. Our life is not to be founded on lies, but on truth. Now, one lie differs from another; there are differences. At times a lie may be necessary, but we do not lie only when necessity demands it...

in order to prevent something worse than the lie itself. A lie might prevent a divorce. A lie might prevent a murder or some other grave matter. But this is not the purpose for which we normally use lies. We use them for gain and for other selfish ends, and then the lie is punishable by God. Nine hundred years before Christ, through Zechariah, in chapter 8, verse 17, He says: “Do not love a false word or a false oath, for I have hated these things,” says the Lord Almighty. A false oath and a false word—for it is true that we often support our lies with an oath as well.

To uphold the lie, we swear falsely. And often the fault is not ours alone: through our lie we also bring others into guilt. Such a thing cannot possibly be blessed by God. Commerce is full of lies, schemes, and fraud. Trade does not stand upon truth; people claim that it cannot survive on truth. We have even reached the point today where, unless merchants lie to us, we ourselves will not buy. They must begin by asking two hundred thousand and then let us have it for one hundred, so that we can say we bargained them down. If they simply tell us, “This is what it costs,” we refuse to pay. So we make them lie to us. And there are countless other examples in our dealings with the world. We ourselves encourage it.

If a merchant tells us truthfully that an item has a defect, we will not buy it. If he tells us otherwise, we will buy it, even though we can see that it is not as he describes it. This is how things have come to be in the world today: they compel you to be guarded and cautious. I do not know; I am simply pointing out this danger. Pay attention to it. There are very few occasions when a person truly must tell a lie. Of course, one may tell a lie to a child. If the child’s mother has just died in the next room, will you tell the child immediately that she is dead? You may say that she has gone shopping and will return, give the child a couple of sweets, and lead him away. Or suppose a daughter comes home and her father is approaching with a pistol in his hand. Will the mother tell him where the girl is? She will say, “She is not here; I have no information.” What should she do—throw her daughter into the fire?

She will not pour oil on the fire. There are blessed exceptions of this kind, and they fall under what Ecclesiastes says: “Do not be overly righteous.” If, in such a situation, you insist, “I cannot tell a lie,” you may cause a murder, and that murder will be on your conscience. It will not rest only upon the one who commits it, but upon you as well. There are situations that require discernment, which, unfortunately, we lack. As the Fathers say, discernment is the greatest virtue: “Discernment is greater than all the virtues.” It is even greater than love, because love itself must be guided by discernment if it is to be rightly ordered. I will now bring you an example from...

Holy Scripture, an incident recorded in the fifth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. There you will see a lie that cost two people their lives. They were not killed by human beings; God Himself struck them down. This took place in the first years of Christianity, when the Church was still in her infancy. Organized charitable work existed even then, and the first Christians were convinced that they could not keep what they had in excess while other people—especially their brethren, their fellow Christians—were hungry and in need. Many therefore sold their possessions and gave the proceeds to the Apostles to administer and send wherever they thought best. Alongside this passage, those of you who read may also consult the sixteenth chapter of the Apostle Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians.

Again, collections were taken up—that is, collection plates were passed around and money was gathered for the needs of Christians who were suffering persecution. Listen to this detail: “But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a piece of property.”

A married couple, Ananias and his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, intending to give the proceeds—the value of the property—to the Apostles, so that they might distribute the money as they saw fit. But they “kept back part of the price.” Do you know what that means? Let us say they received one hundred thousand, but claimed that they had received only fifty thousand.

They had received one hundred thousand, but they set fifty thousand aside and said, “We sold a piece of property and received fifty thousand, which we now offer to the work of Christ.” Thus, “he kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it”—she agreed to it as well; they had arranged it together—“and he brought a certain part and laid it at the Apostles’ feet.” They kept some of the money and brought the rest. Then Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart”—why has the devil entered your heart—“to lie to the Holy Spirit?” For the Church is not mine; it belongs to the Holy Spirit. And now you tell Him that this is how much you received for the property, when in fact you received more.

So Peter tells him that Satan had filled his heart and taken possession of his soul, “to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land.” You kept aside part of the price of that field, that property. “While it remained, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your authority?” Was it not yours? What are you saying? You could have sold it and simply said, “We received this much, but we are giving this much. We received one hundred, and from that we are giving fifty.” Why claim that you received only fifty? You are making a show of generosity, as though you were giving everything, when you are not. “While it remained, did it not remain your own?” When you possessed it, was it not yours? “And after it was sold, was it not under your authority?” Once you sold it, was the money not yours? If you wished, you could give it; if you did not wish, you did not have to give it.

You could have said, “I sold the property for this amount, and from it I am giving this much.” But you cannot falsely claim that you sold the property for less, because even if you are saying it to me, you are saying it to God. God knows that you are lying at this very moment. “Why have you conceived this thing in your heart?” Why did you allow this to enter your heart? “You have not lied to men, but to God.” Let us continue: “Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last.” He fell to the ground and died. Why? Because he had lied. Let us continue: “And great fear came upon all.” When the others who were present saw that this man had fallen down and died because he had lied, they were terrified. “And the young men arose and wrapped him up,”

“and they carried him out and buried him.” The young men who were there lifted him, carried him away, and buried him. “Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.” Two or three hours later, his wife arrived. The two of them had agreed beforehand on what they would say. They would not reveal how much they had received. They would claim that they were giving everything they had received, making a grand show of generosity. She did not know that her husband had died shortly before, in the very place where she was now standing. Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” “Is it true,” he asked, “that this is how much money you received for the field?”

She said, “Yes, for that amount.” Then Peter said to her, “Why is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Do you see these young men? Their feet carried your husband away, and they buried him. They took him out through that very door. “Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last.” She too was gone. You can read this in the Acts of the Apostles, in the account of the life of the early Church. See how serious lying is! Yet we lie over the slightest thing, merely to make ourselves appear important or wealthy: “This is how much I earn; this is how large my pension is”—so many lies, simply to appear before the world as though we were somebody, as though we possessed something.

Vainglorious people—examine yourselves from head to toe. God does not excuse such things. God does not want them. Yet we pay no attention to them. And not only do we fail to pay attention, but after doing them we never bring them to Holy Confession, so that at least, as far as possible, we might be rid of them and begin cleansing ourselves even of these obvious faults. It never occurs to us that we are doing something evil, that we are being defiled, that our tongue, our nous—the spiritual intellect—and our heart are being defiled by Satan, who has been a liar from the beginning. I do not know how you understand this. I repeat: there are circumstances in which a person may lie. Not only may he lie; he must lie. He must.

That is when you are trying to prevent something worse. I cannot make myself an accomplice to murder or become the cause of some grave event—a divorce, as I said, or something else. I must prevent it. But even then, I must not forget that I am accountable, and I must confess it. Many people say that they are compelled to testify: “I happened to be there by chance, and now I must give testimony—indeed, testimony under oath. I have been summoned to court,” and so forth. Were you there by chance? You were not there by chance. There is no such thing as luck or coincidence; there is the providence of God. The fact that you were there was not accidental. Why was someone else not there instead?

You might have broken your leg and been kept somewhere else. A thousand other possibilities could have prevented you from being there. Nothing happens without meaning. So once again, great care is needed. Many people are sometimes compelled not to testify to the truth, even under oath. Then the situation is extremely difficult, and they should mourn over themselves and be deeply grieved: “My God, what have I done? My God, where have I gone wrong, that I am being chastened in this way and such a conflict has arisen within me?” Many times people ask us to lie in order to help them obtain a pension or gain some other material benefit. That is where a great battle, a fierce struggle, a conflict of duties takes place within a person. On the one hand, you want to help—but how can you help when that help is founded upon a lie?

Therefore, never rush to say or support something. There are exceptional cases when there is no time to seek advice, and then we must say whatever will best prevent the greater evil. In other cases, we should consult spiritual fathers so that they may guide us. For even if you swear truthfully, there is a forty-day penance: you may not approach the Holy Chalice. Even if what you swear is true, you may not approach—how much more serious, then, is perjury! Are there any circumstances in which we may lie? We should ask Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos. Saint Dionysios lied. And he lied in a situation where we ourselves would not lie, because we have not been cultivated deeply enough in the spiritual life.

I do not know whether you know the life of Saint Dionysios, the patron saint of Zakynthos. A man murdered the saint’s brother and fled as a fugitive. He came running to the saint’s monastery, knocked on the door, and entered. He said, “Hide me, Geronta; I am a murderer.” The saint took him in, not knowing, of course, that the man had killed his own brother. Soon afterward, the armed search party arrived in pursuit. They realized that the man had headed toward the monastery, knocked at the door, and asked the Saint for information. The Saint replied, “My children, no one has passed this way.” He was so truthful that, no matter what their own eyes might have told them,

they would have doubted their eyes rather than the Saint’s word. I will tell you another incident from his life later. But when they heard the Saint say no, they were compelled to tell him, “Do you know whom this man killed? He killed your brother. Be careful—hand him over to us.” Can you understand what took place within him at that moment?

A great conflict arose within him. I ask you: do we face such circumstances when we tell lies? And if this happened to us, would we hide the murderer of our brother, our child, or our parent? We would not. We would produce him at once and throw him out bodily. But here, as I told you, we see how deeply a person can be cultivated in the spiritual life. The Saint steeled his heart and did not surrender the murderer. “No,” he said, “you must be mistaken. He may have been coming this way, but perhaps he went in another direction.” Someone may ask, “Why did he not hand him over?” To give him an opportunity for metanoia, for repentance. And this repentance would be aided by two things: first, by confronting his own conscience and realizing that he had taken a life he could never restore; and second, by seeing the forbearance and great-heartedness of the murdered man’s brother. These two things might move him to come to himself. The Saint did not hand him over. He secretly helped him escape, gave him money, and sent him across to Xiromero, and so forth. Whether he repented or not, I do not know.

The Saint did not surrender him to the search party, and for the first time he told a lie. I do not know whether anyone from Zakynthos is here, but this epigram about his deed is inscribed upon his holy reliquary: “For the first time he lied and lost his virginity, and the sinless man was sanctified at the very hour he sinned.” For the first time, he lost the virginity of his truthfulness. He lied for the first time: he lost his virginity, and the sinless man was sanctified at the very hour he sinned. Through that very loss, he was sanctified at that moment. If only we would make such a concession solely in circumstances like these, then God would count even that lie to us as righteousness.

I say this simply to awaken in us the desire to be watchful about lying and to bring it to Holy Confession, because for many people it has never reached confession. There is something else I could mention that may also help us: not a modern affliction, but an age-old one—the matter of drunkenness. Perhaps this subject does not concern many of you. Yet a homily is always given for the sake of even one person, not necessarily for many.

Everything God has made, He has made good: the body, food, drink, and all things. But they must be used rightly. For, as Saint Basil the Great says, “What is good is not good unless it is done in a good way.” I have heard people blame God for creating vineyards and making wine possible. I have also heard many people condemn those who have acquired a little money. Neither money nor wine is evil in the sight of God. They become evil because of the way they are used.

Will they be used as God intended, or will they be misused? That depends upon each person’s free choice. Through the Holy Spirit, God has spoken—and David writes in Psalm 103, verse 15—that “wine gladdens the heart of man.” Wine is not an accidental thing. Its role is not a matter of indifference. There is a reason it was given a place within creation. And see to what height this fruit of the vine has been raised: it becomes the Blood of God, the Blood of Christ.

“Drink of it, all of you; this is My Blood,” and the fruit of the vine is changed into the Blood of God. He could have used water for this purpose. He does not use water; He uses wine. Why wine? Because wine has spirit within it. Does it not contain alcohol—literally, spirit? It is not merely wine; it also has spirit within it. Nothing in creation, and nothing God has given us, is accidental. But we human beings either use these gifts well or misuse them. Instead of drinking one glass, if our constitution can bear it—for it is not obligatory, since many people cannot tolerate it—

or perhaps two, we drink three, and then five. At that point, wine ceases to be wine and becomes intoxicating drink. Why? Because it muddles the head.

We must understand, however, that God has made no mistakes in anything. He has made everything good and beautiful. Yet today we see such wretched scenes: people lying on the ground, rolling about on mats because of drunkenness. And we human beings have not stopped with wine. We have also made other artificial drinks, distilled from grains and various fruits, which cloud the head even more, all to satisfy our weaknesses. God does not approve. Do you remember what the angel told Zacharias about John, there in the sanctuary, when he announced to him the good news that his wife Elizabeth would bear a child? You know the words:

“He shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.” These intoxicating drinks—brandy, tsipouro, and the other spirits we make—are what Holy Scripture calls “strong drink.” “He shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.” Yet many people ruin their health, their families fall apart, and they themselves become wrecks, unable even to stand. If they could see a photograph of themselves after becoming drunk, they would be ashamed. And yet this is a plague—not a modern plague, but an age-old one—which man has made with his own hands. For us who call ourselves believers, it is a sin. “Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation.” Do not do this. You must always be

moderate. Holy Scripture does not forbid wine altogether. The alcohol in it can strengthen and stimulate the body, and its use is permitted. Indeed, if you have read the First Epistle to Timothy, in chapter five, verse twenty-three, Paul tells him: “No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.” Timothy, it seems, fasted strictly. He abstained not only from rich foods but even from wine. Some people fast even from water, drinking that too in moderation, not carelessly as we do—much less wine. So Paul tells him to use discernment and drink a little wine because of his many infirmities.

He evidently had what we would call a frail constitution and needed the wine to strengthen him. I do not know whether you have ever wondered who the first drunkard was. Holy Scripture tells us that the first man to become drunk with wine was Noah. After the Flood, Holy Scripture says that Noah planted a vineyard. Perhaps he liked wine; perhaps he did not know its effects, since he had never experienced drunkenness before. He drank too much and became drunk. And one of his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—namely Ham, the middle son, publicly shamed him.

Noah was lying naked in his drunkenness, and Ham ran to tell his brothers to come and see their father naked. This is regarded as a most shameless sin. When Noah sobered up and learned what Ham had done, he cursed him. But Shem, the eldest, took his father’s garment, walked backward, and covered him without looking at him. He covered his father’s nakedness. This is an example for us to imitate. We too must do as Shem did: cover the weaknesses of others, not expose them publicly or spread them through the neighborhood.

“Let me tell you! Oh, what a thing!” Tell me, might not others speak about your own faults? And even if others do not, might not the devil reveal them tomorrow? Most of us may hide our own faults so that others do not know them. But when someone else’s faults come to light, we are ready to parade them publicly, adding our own salt and pepper—even our own whipped cream—to make the story more appealing. Often we do not even relate things exactly as we saw or heard them. We add and subtract according to how we feel about that person, and then serve up the story. So, as I told you, the first man presented to us as drunk was old Noah. Read what follows after chapter six, and you will find what I have been telling you. One of the most important Fathers, Saint Basil the Great,

who dealt extensively with these matters concerning human life, expressed many judgments on them. Allow me to share a few. In one place he says: “Wine is a gift from God, given to the temperate as a consolation in their weakness.” It is a gift from God, he says, given to sensible people for comfort and strengthening—not for the destruction of man’s soul and body. Elsewhere, in his Second Homily on Drunkenness, we read: “Let us flee drunkenness.” Notice the descriptions he uses. Let us flee and keep far from drunkenness, “the common prostitute of all.” Do you hear that?

“The common prostitute of all.” A person who becomes drunk and gets carried away by merriment is like someone in the company of a prostitute who gives herself indiscriminately, without measure or restraint. He no longer knows what he is doing. He loses control—the screws come loose—and he does not know what he is making, saying, thinking, or doing, or even what state he is in. He sees nothing clearly. Drunkenness is “the mother of shamelessness,” for a person behaves shamelessly when drunk; “the lover of laughter,” for he laughs and cackles without knowing why; “the mad woman,” who becomes wild and angry in drunkenness and says all manner of things; “ever-ready indecency, violence easily provoked. For nothing good can arise in a soul darkened by drunkenness.” A soul darkened by drunkenness, he says, can do nothing good. The person becomes dazed and can no longer...

exercise his governing faculty, and so he commits every kind of folly. Elsewhere Saint Basil says: “Drunkenness is the destruction of rational thought.” The mind has become dazed. You will say nothing reasonable, nothing right, nothing moral, nothing honorable. It is “the corruption of strength, untimely old age.” Indeed, even young people who become involved with drink age before their time. They wither; their lungs deteriorate; they do not live out a normal human lifespan. “Untimely old age”—an early death. Before long they will depart this life, sooner than others and sooner than they otherwise would have. “For what else are those who drink themselves drunk together but the idols of the nations?”

Those who become drunk are like the idols of the nations—notice the comparison. “They have eyes but do not see.” Indeed, when a man is drunk, you may stand before him and speak to him: “George, I need to tell you something.” But his mind is somewhere else entirely; he understands nothing. “They have eyes but do not see; they have ears but do not hear; their hands are limp, and their feet are lifeless. Who has plotted all this against them?” Who did all this, he asks? Who bombarded this man and reduced him to such a state? “Who is the cause of these evils? Who has mixed for us this potion of madness?” Who? Saint Basil then continues, speaking about people who give dinners,

hold gatherings, invite friends and others, and get them drunk. “But, O man,” he says, “are you arranging a battle line or a banquet” in your home? Is there a war in your house, so that the wounded and the dead must be carried out? Are you assembling an army, or holding a friendly meal where you share a little food, drink some wine, and offer a prayer? Tell me, he says, O man, are you arranging a battle line or a banquet? “You send the young men out supported by others, like soldiers wounded in war.” They leave as though they had been wounded in battle. How did they enter your house that evening? “You have made them lifeless in the very prime of their youth.” They entered strong and vigorous, but wine struck them down, while you were “called their friend.”

You send your dinner guest out like a corpse, as though you had extinguished his life. You invite a young man, a young woman, a gentleman, or a lady to your table, and afterward they must be carried out on a stretcher. What kind of thing is this? “Drunkenness does not receive the Lord; it drives away the Holy Spirit.” Grace departs from the person who becomes entangled with drink. “For smoke drives away bees, while drunken revelry drives away spiritual gifts.” Through drunken excess, you drive away your spiritual gifts. These are not my words, as I have told you. They are the words of Saint Basil the Great, and a person must

take them seriously. And as you see, today we have not stopped at one simple glass. We have gone on to many other intoxicating drinks and even to narcotics. A person becomes dazed and floats in a sea of euphoria. If only he could be photographed and then see that pitiful spectacle, he would feel ashamed and grieved—if he still possessed any sense of honor. Yet people regard a well-stocked liquor cabinet at home as indispensable. I do not mean to forbid everyone from drinking; that is not the point. But a person must not fall into this condition. He does many harmful things: he wastes his money, destroys his health, and breaks up his family.

He loses all standing as a person, because no one trusts him, respects him, or takes him seriously, and he himself cannot live a sober and temperate life. This too is a vice. It is a wound in society, one that must at least be restrained in a Christian, so that he makes proper use of what is given. Just as a person is called to eat other foods for nourishment, not to indulge in luxury through them, so it is with wine. From the foundation of the world, God has provided these things. He has given man the means to gladden his heart, but not to live in drunken excess. Other Fathers too have spoken about wine.

First—again, forgive me—other Fathers have also spoken about drunkenness. Drunkenness is something that must be restrained; properly speaking, it should disappear altogether, while the use of wine must be kept within limits. Today, sadly, women also become drunk, and young women too—and then the harm is especially grave. If you could observe the first-aid centers during the great feast days in particular, you would shudder at the people brought there and at the young people dragged in, quite apart from all the other consequences. For when people are carried away by revelry, drunkenness, and debauchery, chastity too is often lost. There are other incidents as well, with consequences and victims that suffer deeply. Drunkenness is a cause of many other evils, and a person must prevent the cause if he is to prevent the result. I do not know where you stand in these matters. If there are people around you who, for one reason or another, have become entangled in these things, help them as much as possible by enlightening them, so that they may understand the truth of the matter. God wants man to make use of what He has given, not to abuse it; He did not give it for abuse but for proper use. The Church even goes so far as to permit a woman

who has recently given birth to take some wine, recognizing that it is strengthening. Today this scarcely concerns us, because we have set aside these aspects of fasting. We do not take the fast from wine and oil seriously, or we disregard it altogether. Wine comes before oil: the fast is not spoken of as a fast from “oil and wine,” but from “wine and oil.” Wine can have a stimulating effect that oil may not have. Therefore, during a fast, the Church, like a sober and prudent spiritual mother, prescribes fasting from wine even before fasting from oil.

So during a fast, remove the wine as well; do not put it on the table on a fasting day. The Fathers say: “Where blood flows in, the spirit flows out.” The Holy Spirit and a dazed head cannot coexist. It is impossible. A person cannot say to the Holy Spirit, “Go away, because I am going to drink, and I will let You know when to return.” Such things are absurd. I thought it right to touch on this as well, because today we look at our young people and are ashamed of what we see, because of their abuse both of drink and of the flesh. These two devourers have consumed our sons and daughters, and today—especially among us Greeks—they are not even capable of becoming mothers or parents.

There is profound decay and corruption. However much we may try to excuse it by appealing to the conditions in which we live—to the speed of modern life, materialism, and indifference—this is nevertheless the reality. That is what I wanted to say in passing, alongside the other subject.

Όταν μια γλώσσα λέει ψέματα, δεν είναι του Θεού αυτή η γλώσσα, είναι του διαβόλου, εξυπηρετεί τον διάβολο, μιμείται τον διάβολο. Σας έχει απασχολήσει ποτέ αυτό το αμάρτημα; Αναζητήσατε ποτέ σας να βρείτε ποιος είναι ο πρώτος ψεύτης, ποιος είπε το πρώτο ψέμα;

Αν μας πει ότι έχει αυτό το ελάττωμα, που είναι αλήθεια, δεν θα το πάρουμε. Εάν μας πει αλλιώς, θα το πάρουμε, έστω και θα το βλέπουμε διαφορετικό. Είναι έτσι σήμερα φτιαγμένα τα πράγματα μέσα στον κόσμο, που σε αναγκάζει να κουμπώνεσαι και να προσέχεις. Γι’ αυτό, δεν ξέρω, απλώς τον κίνδυνον αυτόν τον διατυπώνω. Προσέξτε το. Είναι πολύ λίγες οι στιγμές που ο άνθρωπος πρέπει να πει το ψέμα. Βέβαια, θα πει το ψέμα στο παιδί. Πέθανε η μητέρα του δίπλα, θα του πει ότι πέθανε; Θα πει ότι έχει πάει να ψωνίσει και θα έρθει. Θα του δώσει δύο καραμέλες και θα το βάλει από εκεί. Ήρθε η κόρη και έρχεται ο πατέρας με το πιστόλι στο χέρι. Θα πει η μητέρα, το κορίτσι; Θα πει, δεν πληροφορείται εδώ, δεν είναι διάδυση. Τι θα κάνεις, θα ρίξεις στη φωτιά;

ἐξενέγκαντες ἔθαψαν. Οι νεότεροι που ήρθαν εκεί τον σήκωσαν, τον πήρανε και πήγαν και τον έθαψαν. Ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ὡρῶν τριῶν διάστημα καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ, μὴ εἰδυῖα τὸ γεγονός, εἰσῆλθεν. Έπειτα από δύο-τρεις ώρες ήρθε και η σύζυγος, με την οποία είχαν συμφωνήσει τι θα πούνε. Δεν θα πούνε πόσα πήρανε. Θα πούνε ότι όσα πήραν τα δίδουν, έκαναν κουβαρνταλίκια. Δεν γνωρίζει τώρα ότι ο σύζυγος θα έχει πεθάνει προ ολίγου εκεί που στέκεται αυτή τώρα. Ἀπεκρίθη δὲ αὐτῇ ὁ Πέτρος· Εἰ τοσούτου τὸ χωρίον ἀπέδοσθε; Αλήθεια, λέει, τόσα χρήματα πήρατε από το χωράφι;

Πρόκειται να προλάβεις κάτι το χειρότερο. Δεν μπορώ να γίνω εγώ συνένοχος φόνου, να γίνω αιτία μιας σοβαρής υποθέσεως, όπως είπα, ενός διαζυγίου, ενός δεν ξέρω τι. Πρέπει να προλάβω αυτό το πράγμα. Αλλά μην ξεχνάω όμως ότι είμαι ένοχος και να το εξομολογηθώ. Λένε πολλοί άνθρωποι, αναγκάζονται, λέει, να μαρτυρήσουν. Ευρέθηκα μπροστά, κατά τύχη ήμουνα εγώ εκεί, και πάω να μαρτυρήσω, και μάλιστα με όρκον να μαρτυρήσω, με καλούν στο δικαστήριο κ.λπ. Κατά τύχη ευρέθης εκεί; Δεν ευρέθης κατά τύχη εκεί. Τύχη δεν υπάρχει, σύμπτωση δεν υπάρχει, πρόνοια Θεού υπάρχει, και ότι ευρέθης εκεί δεν είναι τυχαίο γεγονός. Πώς δεν ευρέθη ένας άλλος;

Είχες σπάσει το ποδάρι σου να μείνεις εκεί πέρα. Ω, χίλιες άλλες πόρτες υπάρχουν. Τίποτα δεν υπάρχει. Γι’ αυτό χρειάζεται και πάλι προσοχή. Πολλοί άνθρωποι αναγκάζονται πολλές φορές να μην μαρτυρήσουν την αλήθεια, και με όρκο πολλές φορές. Τότε είναι πολύ δύσκολη η κατάσταση και πρέπει να οικτίρουν τον εαυτό τους και να λυπούνται. Θεέ μου, τι έχω κάνει; Θεέ μου, πού έχω σφάλει, που τιμωρούμαι κατ’ αυτή την έννοια και γίνεται αυτή η σύγκρουση μέσα μου; Πολλοί άνθρωποι πολλές φορές μας καλούνε να πούμε ψέματα για να τους βοηθήσουμε, να πάρουν μια σύνταξη, να επιτύχουν κάτι τι άλλο, υλικό συμφέρον, και εκεί είναι μέσα που γίνεται στον άνθρωπο το μεγάλο μακελειό, μεγάλη πυγμαχία, σύγκρουση καθηκόντων. Θέλεις από εδώ να βοηθήσεις, αλλά πού, σε ψέμα επάνω να βοηθήσεις; Πώς να βοηθήσεις;

ό,τι τα μάτια τους αν έλεγαν, θα δυσπιστούσαν σε αυτό που είπε ο Άγιος. Και θα σας πω ένα περιστατικό παρακάτω του Αγίου. Όταν όμως αυτοί είδανε ότι ο Άγιος λέει όχι, τότε αναγκάστηκαν να του πούνε: «Ξέρεις ποιον εσκότωσε; Τον αδελφό σου εσκότωσε αυτός. Πρόσεξε, δώσ’ τον μας». Καταλαβαίνετε τώρα τι έγινε μέσα του;

ο οποίος έχει καταπιαστεί με τα θέματα αυτά του ανθρώπου, έχει εκφράσει πολλές γνώμες. Να μου επιτρέψετε να σας μεταφέρω μερικές. Λέγει σε ένα μέρος: «Οἶνος τὸ παρὰ Θεοῦ δῶρον, εἰς παραμυθίαν τῆς ἀσθενείας δεδομένον τοῖς σώφροσιν». Είναι δώρο, λέει, από τον Θεό και είναι δοσμένος στους μυαλωμένους για μια παραμυθία, ένα ενδυνάμωμα, και όχι δοσμένο για την καταστροφή της ψυχής και του σώματος του ανθρώπου. Σε ένα άλλο μέρος, σε μια ομιλία του, τη Δευτέρα μάλιστα Περὶ μέθης, διαβάζουμε τα εξής: «Φύγωμεν μέθην». Προσέξτε χαρακτηρισμούς. Να φύγουμε, να απομακρυνθούμε από τη μέθη, «τὴν πάνδημον πόρνην». Ακούτε;
