Summary
The lecture presents Christian life after baptism as spiritual warfare against Satan, whose temptations work especially through uncontrolled bodily passions. The lecture also invokes Saint Euphemia’s miraculous endorsement of the Orthodox confession at the Fourth Ecumenical Council as proof that conciliar doctrine bears the Holy Spirit’s seal. The lecture concludes that pride sustains error, while humility, repentance, sacramental life, and fidelity to Orthodox tradition protect Christians from deception.

Yesterday, as you will remember, our subject was Satan himself and his devices: the ways he leads a person into sin and the ways he keeps him there. When a person does not know the strength and cunning of his enemy, he will easily fall into the enemy’s hands. As we noted, nations have propaganda services and spies. What is their purpose? To spy out the strength of the opposing side.
Military men know this especially well. They have always sought to send their own men into enemy territory, to observe the enemy’s forces and movements and draw out information, so that they might defend themselves better or, in the event of an attack, know what they would be facing. So anyone who fails to understand that he is at war—as I said yesterday, from the moment he is baptized he is in a state of war—has an enemy who never sleeps and never rests. Day and night, the enemy works against him by deceit, always seeking to set a trap and get him into his grasp. Those of you who were with us will also remember that we discussed Satan’s origin, where he is, what he can do, and what he cannot do. We ended with some of the methods he uses, though of course this subject can never be exhausted—
the methods the devil employs in order to make a person his own. And we said that most of his victims fall through the flesh. The flesh, which ought to serve a person for his good, becomes a source of passions against him.
When a person is not watchful, Satan gets him into his grasp. As the Fathers say, ninety percent of those who are condemned to Hell are people who do not guard their flesh. They do not govern it; they are governed by it. They do not influence it; they are influenced by it.
They do not guard it; they obey it. These people make up a very large proportion of those who go with him, as the words say very clearly: “Depart to the devil and his angels.” Another method, as we went on to say, is the various heresies. Satan comes and introduces his own teachings into matters of the Faith.
He says, “There are other teachings. Yes, there are others.” These are his devices, and a person must be on guard against them. I want to say, on this occasion, that there is one religion, one faith, and one Church. The others are human constructions. Human beings made them.
They arose either from self-interest or from egotism.
There is one religion, one faith, and one Church: the Orthodox Church. It has been established in such a way that the truth within it is demonstrated. Whatever the so-called churches possess—and I call them so-called churches because they are not churches—is human.
Whatever the Orthodox Church possesses is divine,
and comes from the Holy Spirit. For example, we proclaim as dogma the divinity of Jesus Christ and the Holy Trinity: that the Holy Trinity is both one and three. Then the Jehovah’s Witnesses come and reject all this, saying that there is no Trinity.
They say that some satanic priest invented it, that the devil invented it, and that Christ is not God. So the devil makes a religion of his own as well. Today millions of people believe this kind of religion: that the Holy Trinity is a human invention and that the divinity of Jesus is not true. Yet we have tangible evidence. These are not only matters of faith, but also matters of knowledge. From the earliest years, this question immediately concerned both the Church and the state. When the Christian emperor known as Constantine the Great was reigning, a division arose within the body of those who bore the name of Christ. Opposing the Church were the so-called Arians, led by Arius—the forefathers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Constantine convened a Synod. He did not stand alone, like the Pope, and proclaim dogma by himself; he called a Synod of 318 Fathers. Ecclesiastes says, “Woe to him who is alone.” But here there were 318. They met together, and they did not merely exchange opinions: their decisions were also accompanied by miracles. Four miracles took place at the First Ecumenical Council. The divinity of Jesus and the existence of the Holy Trinity were demonstrated through Saint Spyridon. This is a historical event. For us Orthodox Christians, it confirms the true faith and the working of the Holy Spirit in the decisions of the First Ecumenical Council.
When Saint Spyridon asked to speak, he was not given the floor at first, as you will know if you have read the account. Compared with the other learned men at the Council, Saint Spyridon was at a disadvantage. They thought the matter depended on cleverness, intelligence, and learning alone. The days passed in debate, while both Arius and his followers, and our own Fathers—Athanasius the Great, Saint Nicholas, Saint Achillios, and the others—held firmly to their positions. Yet they reached no conclusion. When Saint Spyridon came forward and asked to speak, he was initially refused. But as the situation grew more pressing, Constantine the Great ordered that he be given the floor. They were afraid, you see!
They thought he would harm their cause. In any event, the elder stepped forward and drew from his cassock a roof tile, which his deacon had fetched from a low house nearby. He said, “Arius, what is this?” “A roof tile.” “In the name of the Father, Arius.” As soon as he finished saying “the Father,” fire rose upward. “And of the Son, Arius,” and water flowed downward. “And of the Holy Spirit, Arius,” and he showed him the earth that remained. Arius was speechless, and so were our own Fathers. Then again: “In the name of the Father, Arius,” and fire descended; “of the Son, Arius,” and water rose; “of the Holy Spirit, Arius,” and once again there was the tile. There you see that the three are one and the one is three. Everyone was speechless. Arius then said, “Indeed, the words are human, but the deed is the Lord’s.”
Did he believe? No, he did not. That is what heresy means. Heresy means that I converse with the devil, that I have the devil within me, and that I accept nothing except my own distorted view. Indeed, the following story is told. His mother heard the fierce disputes he had with Athanasius the Great, who was a deacon at the time, and asked him, “Tell me, my child, by the milk with which I nursed you: are you right, or is Athanasius?” He answered, “Athanasius is right, Mother, but I cannot back down.” His egotism would not let him. And so he was lost—and you know how he was lost.
He managed to convince our people that he had repented, and they believed him. Through the influence of various governments, the opposing party forced our people to receive him so that they might concelebrate with him. A hierarch who was to concelebrate with him the next day under this pressure prayed to Christ and said, “Do not count me worthy to concelebrate with Your enemy.” In the morning, the people went to the Church, and Arius also set out. But Arius never made it inside. They waited for him and asked, “Where is he?” He had arrived but had gone toward the latrine. They went there and found him dead, with his bowels emptied into it. That was the end of Arius. Yet the Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to this day,
telling us that the Holy Trinity and the divinity of Jesus were inventions of some satanic priest. But we proclaim: “At the First Council you were revealed as a champion and wonderworker, our God-bearing Father Spyridon.” This is not merely a matter of faith; it is a matter of knowledge. It is a historical event. And at this same Council—because I want to tell you that everything we have proclaimed as dogma and possess in the Church bears the seal of the Holy Spirit, whereas other teachings bear the seal of the Pope, Luther, Russell, Muhammad, Zoroaster, Buddha, and so forth, the seal of human beings—before the First Ecumenical Council began, a sharp contest took place between Arius and Saint Achillios, Bishop of Larissa.
Achillios posed this challenge to Arius: “If what you say is true, command this stone to bring forth oil.” There was a stone there, and he told Arius to make it produce oil. Oil itself! Arius failed, so he turned the challenge around and said, “You tell it to bring forth oil.” Achillios then said, “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, come forth,” and oil flowed out. So there were already two miracles at the First Ecumenical Council. Would you like a third? What did Saint Nicholas do? This gentle Saint could bear no more, so he raised his hand and struck Arius on the head so hard that Arius saw stars. According to the Canons of ecclesiastical law, this should not have happened; and because he had struck someone in the presence of the emperor, his hand was to be cut off.
They stripped him of his episcopal office and vestments, put him in prison, and intended to cut off his hand when the Council’s work was finished. The next day, one of his friends went to bring him a little bread in prison. He found Saint Nicholas wearing his omophorion and holding a Gospel book, calmly sitting and reading. “Where did you get those? They stripped you of your office and deposed you!” Our Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos had gone into the prison and asked him, “Nicholas, what are you doing here?” He replied, “I am here for love of You, Lord.” The Lord said, “Then take My Gospel.” And the Most Holy Theotokos gave him the omophorion. Three miracles! It was as though He were saying, “The hand that struck Arius is blessed. Even if they deposed you, I have not deposed you.” There was also another miracle worked by someone else, though I do not know exactly what miracle he performed. Four miracles took place at the First Ecumenical Council.
Therefore, everything we possess has come from above. It is given by God—given by God—and was not made by human beings. Can the Pope sit upon his throne and speak through the Holy Spirit, only for another Pope to come and abolish what the first one taught? If both speak through the Holy Spirit, does the Spirit abolish His own teaching? One Pope abolishes things, another does not, and they say so many other things besides. In the same way, other people proclaim their own dogmas and establish churches—Luther, Calvin, Muhammad, and the others—building them upon myths. The founders of these so-called religions are not gods; indeed, these are not true religions but religious systems. There is only one true religion. All these so-called founders remain bound in their burial shrouds. If you go to their tombs—in Mecca or wherever they may be—you will find them there. Only in the Orthodox Church does Jesus,
Jesus, the Head of the Orthodox Church, and His Mother both have empty tombs. The empty tomb shows that something greater is happening here. The grave held all the others below: all the popes and all the innovators who founded churches remain entirely in their graves, wrapped in their shrouds. Only our Christ and our Most Holy Theotokos have empty tombs. And those empty tombs will always proclaim that the truth is here, and that those who believe in them will rise again one day. Yet the whole world owes a common debt: since we are made of dust, we must all repay that debt to the earth. Now, concerning the divinity of the Holy Spirit, they tell us and insist that He is merely a breeze, the breath of God—absurd claims—and not God. So what happened?
The Fourth Ecumenical Council took place. Who proclaimed as dogma the divinity of Jesus and of the Holy Spirit? The Fourth Ecumenical Council. Do you know what happened there? The two opposing sides each set down their conclusions in a written confession. One side, which said, “He is not God,” wrote down its teachings, while the Orthodox set down theirs.
They went to the relics of Saint Euphemia, to her reliquary in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople. They opened it—the Saint’s body is preserved whole—and placed the two scrolls in her hands, one from each side, containing their respective decisions. Then they locked the reliquary.
Three days later they opened it. They found one scroll at her feet, while the Orthodox confession was still in her hands. This explains her dismissal hymn: “You greatly gladdened the Orthodox and put the false believers to shame, O Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ; for you confirmed the decrees of the Fourth Council, which the Fathers rightly proclaimed as dogma.” There is nothing merely human in our Church—nothing at all. Everything placed within it—the chanting stands, the candle stands, even the offering box below, the iconostasis, the icons on the right and left, the Honorable Forerunner, Christ the Pantocrator, the great chandelier, and the bishop’s throne—has a purpose. Everything proclaims the faith. Look over there:
there is one chanting stand on this side and another on that side. What are these two based upon? Why not have only one choir on one side? They are based on Isaiah’s vision of God upon His throne, with the Seraphim and Cherubim, each having six wings and crying one to another: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Sabaoth.” You can find this scene in the sixth chapter of Isaiah. On this basis, then, our Church placed the Cherubim and Seraphim there to sing praises to God. It is not right to have only one choir; there should be two. Even if the other chanter does not have such a good voice, that makes no difference. God has angels who sing His praises. What is right must be done. Before me is a candle stand. What does it signify? The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: at once, the Holy Trinity. And what is this part descending below? It is Christ,
who came down from above. One of the three Persons descended. And when He descended, did He remain alone? No, the three were still together. That is why there are three branches again. What do we put here on top? They must have removed them so that they would not make a mess while lighting them. What do we place here? Candles. And who are fixed upon this stand? We are. When Christ came into our world, He raised us also, who were dead. In what sense were we dead? Go to where the candles are kept and you will find yourself lying inside a coffin. The little candle you take from that coffin represents you; it is your image. And you say, “Now, in Christ, I give light.” On the great chandelier is the Church Triumphant—the Saints. One day the faithful will depart from here, from the Church Militant, and go to the Church Triumphant, represented above on the great chandelier. Everything always has its meaning; none of this is frivolous. These things were not devised by modern artists or decorators who furnish drawing rooms
and places of corruption. Such people do not determine the things of the Church. Everything here has been placed by the Holy Spirit. They made a censer, as I told you on the first day when I spoke about the types that prefigured our Most Holy Theotokos. They made a censer. What does the censer signify? It is adorned with sacred symbols. Its three chains signify the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Below is the shell-shaped bowl, signifying the Most Holy Theotokos and her womb. Within it is the burning coal, Christ. The incense signifies the Holy Spirit. The twelve bells signify the twelve Apostles. There you have the whole dogma. Nothing here is superfluous.
This is precisely what I insist upon: there is no other Church. There is one Church. And if we seek her in the Old Testament, we shall find a passage which our Fathers have brought forward and established as part of the Archbishop’s office.
The Archbishop comes out holding the dikirion and trikirion. One has two candles and the other has three. What does this mean? The three candles signify the Holy Trinity, and the two candles signify Christ and His two natures, divine and human, united in the one and same Christ. The bishop is a living icon of Christ. In his office, the bishop represents Christ. Woe to those who speak contemptuously about bishops. Woe to them! Even if bishops were the worst people in the world, once they are vested and undertake to fulfill the role of Christ, woe to anyone who reviles them. It is a direct insult to Christ. We should wash our mouths with much Agiasmos before taking even the most sinful bishop’s name upon our lips, and speak it with great reverence. So the bishop comes out and says: “O Lord, O Lord, look down from heaven and behold, and visit...”
“...this vineyard which Your right hand has planted, and establish it.” This vineyard—not these vineyards. Establish it—not them. One. There is one truth; there are not many truths. Christ told the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, “We must worship in spirit and in truth.” “God is Spirit, and we must worship in spirit and in truth”; and He loves the true worshipers, who worship in spirit and in truth. This is why I insist that all these heresies possess a worldly mind. Some man appeared and told them what to believe. Take the Protestant world. Today the Protestant world appears in four hundred different forms.
This is Protestantism, what we commonly call Evangelicalism. They say, “I believe what the Gospel says. I believe only in Christ,” and so on. They do not believe in the Most Holy Theotokos, the Saints, the Mysteries, the kollyva, or the holy relics. They believe in none of these things. They do not believe that Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ. They do not believe what Baptism signifies and truly is: rebirth. After tearing everything down, they direct me to the Gospel. What, then, has happened here? Do you remember when our Christ was tested by the devil in the wilderness, as we read in the fourth chapter of Matthew and the fourth chapter of Luke? Forgive me—of Luke. In the third temptation, after he had failed to persuade Christ to work a miracle by turning stones into bread, and failed to make Him throw Himself down from the Temple, and so forth, he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.”
“Bow down, and I will give You the whole world. Why should You go and be crucified?” When Satan told Him to bow down and offered Him all these things, Christ answered, “Get behind Me, Satan.” The devil did indeed hold humanity in his grasp when Christ came. But would he not then have enslaved Christ as well, and so regained everything he had offered Him? The same thing happens here. The moment a man raises his own little head and proclaims as dogma, “This is what I think,” he has been deceived. Where do the more than four hundred forms of Protestantism come from, my beloved? A new one appears every day, every year: “No, it is not that way; it is this way. No, it is not that way; it is this way. No, it is not that way; it is this way.” Where have they not spread? What path have they not taken? Do you know where they end up? Today there are also those who call themselves the enlightened ones—the Pentecostals and others—claiming to belong to Pentecost and to possess the gifts of Pentecost, although their movement dates only from 1519.
Historically, their claim cannot stand, whereas ours can. I see a priest here. Come here, Father. Who ordained you? A certain bishop. Come here, my bishop. Who ordained you? Three particular bishops. Let those three come forward. Who ordained you? Three other bishops. And who ordained you? Three others. If we trace this succession back, just as we trace a person’s baptismal lineage, do you know where we shall arrive? At the Upper Room, where the Holy Spirit illumined the Apostles, filled them with the Holy Spirit, and sent them out to preach to the world, to baptize, to ordain, to minister, to forgive sins, and so forth. Now take a Protestant, one of those with his own satanic religion, and trace him backward. Back, back, back—where will he arrive? At the year 1519, in the arms of a man named Luther.
“Luther, where did you come from?” “I was a papist, and I fell out with the Pope.” “Why did you fall out with the Pope?” “Because the Pope issued indulgences and would not let me sell them and make money; that is why I turned against him.” Instead of preaching that people should come to Orthodoxy—for at that time we were under the Turkish yoke—he broke away and tore everything down. Protestantism rejects everything done by the priesthood. Because Papism was despotic, Luther rejected it and created a religion of his own. Since 1519 his religion has continued giving birth to new groups every year, for more than four hundred years. Where is the truth? Are these religions from God? Are they truly religions? And what is this talk about the union of churches? What churches? What does “churches” mean? The Church of Jesus is one.
Let whoever wishes return to her. Protestantism, then, sprang from the corrupted blood of the papal church. Come here, Father; where do you belong? Where do you come from? The papal church. How far back can its line be traced? It reaches only to 1054. It cannot go farther, because that is when it separated: when the Pope claimed supremacy, when you took the Cross down and placed it upon the papal slipper, when the Pope demanded primacy and declared that the whole world must bow before him. That is where they separated. Until 1054 they had been together with the Orthodox Church. Do you know of something that happened? Let me tell you. When the relics of Saint Nicholas were transferred from Myra in Lycia, they were taken to Bari in Italy.
The Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the chapel there. Myrrh flowed from his feet, and they prolonged the Liturgy as much as they could, collecting cauldron after cauldron of myrrh. But when the division occurred, and the Pope said that he was infallible, and so on, Saint Nicholas ceased to pour forth myrrh whenever a papal priest celebrated. For this reason, the papists sold his relics to the Russians. He no longer poured forth myrrh for them. They claim that they have him in the Vatican. Lies, lies—they do not have him. They sold him to the Russians for this very reason, because from the time...
...they broke away from Orthodoxy and declared themselves infallible, Saint Nicholas ceased to pour forth myrrh. These are tangible, historical facts. Read the Synaxarion for May 21, and you will find details about what I am telling you. All these heresies, then, are works fashioned by Satan. The same is true of the Pentecostals, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and every kind of offshoot. There is one Church, and that Church is the Orthodox Church. Let any so-called priest of the Jehovah’s Witnesses stand before a demon-possessed person. Nothing happens at all; the demon pays no attention to him. But let even one of our sinful little priests come forward.
Let him put on his epitrachelion, and you will see what the demon does: “Now I will tear you apart, you scoundrel! I will deal with you!” This happens as soon as an Orthodox priest puts on his epitrachelion. The demon fears none of the others; they all belong to him. Yet, sadly, people leave in order to justify themselves and their misconduct, because their lives are not in order. No one who is free from sin leaves Orthodoxy. A person leaves because Orthodoxy reproves his sinful way of life, and he goes elsewhere. There Satan no longer troubles him, because, as I told you, he has placed him safely within heresy and made him a heretic; then Satan sleeps without concern. In this way, millions of people throughout the world are lost. Only in Orthodoxy is there the blessing of water. Have all the cardinals in the world read prayers over a bowl of water...
...and it will stink within two days. If you wish, go to the so-called papal church. There is one in Athens, on Panepistimiou Street, or go wherever else you think best. When you enter, there is a basin below, a bowl shaped like a shell, in which they keep what they call holy water. Take some, put it in a bottle, and see whether it does not go bad. Or taste it and see whether it has been salted, because they add salt to it. But take water from Orthodoxy and see: does the Agiasmos ever spoil? In Brachami, a year and a half ago, they demolished a house that was 120 years old. Apparently the people who lived there had been devout. In its four corners they found four bottles of Agiasmos, and the man who demolished the house and built the new one even drank from one of them.
It was 120 years old. We ourselves have Agiasmos that is sixty-five years old. What more do you want? You take basil that has been blessed by the Cross, put it into flour, and make sourdough starter. Does basil possess such properties by itself? Take rosemary, a violet, or anything you wish, provided it has been blessed by the Cross, and you will see that it brings the shopkeeper’s flour to life: it produces yeast; it produces life. Take basil that has not been blessed by the Cross, and it will rot and remain useless. Why are you laughing? Are these things from Heaven or not? Otherwise, where is the truth? How is it that I hold the truth in my hands, while the devil has led millions of people astray? It is because of their pride and their insistence on their own opinion. If they were humble...
...would Christ have abandoned them? A person may be sinful, but let him not be proud, because then Satan cannot get a hold on him. And pride is the one thing he takes care to serve up to man. Did you hear what Arius said? “Yes, but I would rather die than admit that I was wrong.” Why not say, “Brothers and fathers, bless me. I am human; I had understood it differently. I thank my Lord, and I thank you as well. I am with you”? Why not? Is it shameful to admit defeat? You are human; you are not infallible. Infallibility belongs only to the Holy Spirit. All these things, then, are works of Satan. Another deception and snare that he sets for many people is what are called mediums. Whenever you hear of a medium, know that it is that chief instigator himself...
...with his little tail. He comes and plays the part of one’s mother, father, or another loved one. In our grief, we want to know about them, and so we go there. Unfortunately, that is not the right path. These people prey especially upon grief, and you see that, particularly in wealthy households...
...as soon as a death occurs, they immediately appear, supposedly to offer comfort. Somehow they draw the bereaved in and persuade them that they can speak with the departed through these intermediaries, for the word “medium” means a mediator, someone in between. And indeed, many hear the words—even what sounds like the voice of their loved one—and they are comforted. Yet it is not their loved one. It is the devil, who...
...knows the person’s language and voice. He also knows what has happened in the household and what relationships the person had with others, and so he plays their part. Could it really be possible that some lady in Kypseli summoned my mother’s soul? Would my mother leave Hell, where she is, and come to Kypseli? And if that could happen, who would remain in Hell?
Could any medium bring them out of there? Who brings them, and who takes them back? You see how rather foolish and senseless this is, and yet there are many victims—very many. It is not the person you are seeking; it is someone else. Table-turning and all such things are his works. He is the one concealed behind them, just as he is concealed behind those who hear voices and write. They hear and write because someone is speaking to them. Who is speaking to you? The Most Holy Theotokos? Really? Did she show you her identification? Did you see it? Is it Saint Nicholas? Saint John? How do you know who it is? What is it? Suppose you tune the dial and pick up a radio station. What station is it? Is it in Tashkent? China? Bari? Athens? Belgrade?
Is it the BBC? What is it? You have picked up a station and hear someone speaking Greek. I ask you: what station is it? How do you know? And yet this deception is especially widespread today. It has many victims, particularly among women. You see uneducated people who suddenly begin to write. What are they writing? Are they writing a Gospel? The Gospel has already been written. Are they writing a way of salvation? The way of salvation has already been written. One great device of our times is the deification of the Most Holy Theotokos. Great is her grace, but her place is clearly defined. To treat her in this way is blasphemy against her. What the Roman Catholics do, for example, when they say that the Most Holy Theotokos was immaculately conceived, is blasphemy. They exalt her...
The Roman Catholics make the sign of the Cross with five: the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Pope. That is how they pray. The Protestants say, “She was a woman, a certain Mary, a good girl.” The Roman Catholics raise her too high, while the Protestants drag her down. What are they doing? They are acting like a dentist loosening a tooth. Once it has been loosened, it will be pulled out. They remove her from her proper place, whereas her true place is where the Orthodox Church has placed her: “The Queen stood at Thy right hand, clothed in a garment wrought with gold and arrayed in varied colors.” That is where David saw her, and that is where he places her. The Most Holy Theotokos is likewise placed there upon the holy diskos. Ask the priests what they say when they take out her portion. They recite this verse from Psalm 44 and place the Most Holy Theotokos on the right. That is her place. The Most Holy Theotokos does not save us; she intercedes for us before Christ our Lord.
“Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” From the choir stands we say, “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.” We say this during the Paraklesis. In the Divine Liturgy, however, the service book contains neither “intercede for us” nor “save us.” Those are additions of our own, and when we try to put our fingers into things, we make mistakes. Search the texts and see whether there is anything of the kind. There is neither “Most Holy Theotokos, save us” nor “Most Holy Theotokos, intercede for us.” In the Paraklesis we do have “Most Holy Theotokos, save us”: save us from earthquake, save us from hail, save us from fire, save us from war. Thus, the Most Holy Theotokos herself understood her place before Christ our Lord when she said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.” He is her Savior as well.
She too was born of Joachim and Anna. She was not immaculately conceived, as the Westerners claim. What blasphemy is this? For then we would say to her, “You should have had ancestral sin as well. Then we would see whether you would have been humble, spotless, and possessed of all these virtues. But as it is, you had no ancestral sin,” as they claim. And, as you have seen, they placed a lily in her hand. That is the purpose behind it. It comes from Roman Catholicism. Great, then, is the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, but she does not save. Christ saves. Do you remember what she said at the wedding in Cana? “I will speak to Him, but if you want a miracle to happen, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ Whatever He says to you.” I have told Him what I had to say; now you must do whatever He tells you. If, then, we do what Christ our Lord says, we shall have salvation. So how do these people know that what they hear...
...comes from the Most Holy Theotokos, from one saint or another, from Saint John, or from Saint Nicholas? How do you know? How did you test it? Have you ever knelt down and asked, “Tell me, what is this supernatural thing happening to me? Why did you choose me as your hand to carry your messages from Heaven to earth? My Most Holy Theotokos, who am I? Am I your Pantanassa? Am I Saint Kyriaki? Am I Saint Photini? Am I Saint Paraskevi? Am I Saint Barbara? Am I Saint Catherine? Who am I?” Then you will receive the answer. Do you know what happened in Athens two or three months ago? Listen. An elder from the Holy Mountain was in Athens. People learned that a respected spiritual father from the Holy Mountain was staying in a certain house, and many came to make their confession. Among them came four women who engaged in automatic writing...
...and who not only wrote in this way, but sometimes even saw the Most Holy Theotokos. They too came and waited for their turn. The elder said to one of them, who was the “professor,” so to speak—the leader of the group: “Do you have anything to tell me, my child?” “No, Geronta,” she replied, “I have nothing to tell you. I see the Most Holy Theotokos. She speaks to me, and I write,” and so forth. “I have risen to a fairly high spiritual level.” He said, “Well done, my child, well done. You have my blessing. Only take care not to fall, because a person must always be watchful. Well done, well done.” She asked, “And what advice can you give me about these things, so that I may advance still further? I have no sins.” He answered, “Let me see the others, and if anything occurs to me, I will tell you at the end. But since you have advanced so far, I do not think you have any need of my advice.” Then she went into the adjoining room.
The other three said the same: “We see the Most Holy Theotokos; she speaks to us, and we write,” and they spoke of other saints as well. Three or four other people were also in the house. The lady of the house served them coffee and sweets, and a spiritual discussion took place. These women, however, held themselves apart from the others. Eventually it was time for them to leave. They began to go while the elder was hearing someone’s confession in the other room. He heard that they were leaving, interrupted the confession, and said to the hostess, “Would you ask that particular lady”—I do not know how he identified her—“to remain? I want to tell her something.” The hostess understood whom he meant and asked the woman to stay. The woman was delighted that the elder had singled her out, thinking that they would work together and that she would hear something special from him.
“Here I am, Geronta, at your service. Give the blessing and tell me what you wish to say. What can I do?” He said, “Listen. I forgot to ask you: when you see the Most Holy Theotokos, do you say anything to her?” “No,” she answered. “I see her shining with light. She speaks, and I write down her counsel and everything else.” “Yes, but do you at least chant to her? Do you know how?” She said, “Tell me, Geronta. I do not know, and perhaps I am sinning.”
“The Most Holy Theotokos especially loves this: chant to her, ‘Rejoice, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed is the fruit of thy womb.’” “Oh,” she said, “I know that.” “Then thank her for condescending to make you so exceptional. Chant that to her.” “Yes. May you be blessed; thank you. Yes, yes, yes.” And she left, eagerly awaiting the opportunity...
...for the Most Holy Theotokos to visit her so that she could greet her. Indeed, as before, the figure of the Most Holy Theotokos appeared and began speaking to her. When it began to speak, the woman remembered what the elder had told her and began to chant, “Rejoice, Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” And while she was chanting, listen to what she heard: “Shut up, you woman!” That was the answer from her supposed “Theotokos.” As soon as the elder had heard her story, he knew that she was deluded and that the devil was deceiving her. On the Holy Mountain, the elders can catch birds in midair, as the saying goes. They contend with the devil every day and know his ways. But the elder needed to help her understand it gently.
If he had told her, “You are deluded, and it is Satan who is deceiving you,” she would have replied, “You are saying that to me? I speak with her directly!” You could not reach her. You could not reach her. But if such people would only humble themselves and ask, “In the name of the crucified Jesus Christ, what are you, who seize my hand so that I write, or who speak while I write?” You know, while the “Axion Estin” is being chanted here and everyone is kneeling, you may see such a woman take something from her handbag and begin to write. What is the Most Holy Theotokos telling you now? The Most Holy Theotokos is being honored here in the hymn sung by everyone. What is she supposedly telling you separately? Do you not understand that the devil is deceiving you? Surely you understand. Do you see? All this happens not only here in Greece, but abroad as well. I went to America and Canada and encountered deluded people of this sort, who claimed to be illumined. “We receive illumination; we communicate with the world beyond.” Such people think they need no one’s help. There are also those who speak foreign languages. But we...
...are Greeks; what foreign languages are you going to speak to us? Do you not understand how absurd this is? We are Greeks. Why speak to me in a foreign language? Why speak to me in a foreign language? Listen to this. In Los Angeles there was a simple Orthodox priest who had a parish. He celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the morning, received Holy Communion himself, and gave Holy Communion to the faithful. As he was leaving, a woman approached him and said, “I speak with Christ. I speak with the Most Holy Theotokos.” He understood at once what was happening. If people truly possessed such a gift, they would not announce it. If you had a treasure, would you reveal where you had hidden it? Would you tell people where you had hidden your gold coins? You do not speak of such things. How can you open your mouth and say, “I speak with Christ”? He understood.
So he said to her, “Please forgive me, but I have an appointment. The car is waiting, and I must hurry away on some business.” She had already begun saying, “I speak foreign languages; I speak this language and that,” and so forth. Then she began speaking in a foreign language. The priest knew only Greek, English, and a little French, but she was speaking a language he did not know. Whether she was insulting him, praising God, or saying something else, he could not tell. Another woman standing nearby began making the sign of the Cross and crying, “Save us, my Christ! Save us, my Christ!” The first woman continued speaking in foreign languages. Eventually the storm passed—for they become demonized. If you saw how these women and others like them behave, you would see that they become demonized. The storm passed, and the woman grew calm and quiet.
The other woman went to the priest and asked, “Father, do you know what she was saying?” “No,” he replied, “I do not.” “I am Syrian,” she said, “and that woman was speaking Syriac. She was blaspheming your Christ and your Most Holy Theotokos, Father. She was blaspheming them in Syriac”—the woman who claimed to speak foreign languages! Do you understand? The world today is full of demonized people. These are Satan’s devices. I cannot tell you how far these things have gone. And what do you think sorcery is? What do you think black magic is today? Go out into Attica and see. There is hardly a house that has not been bound by spells.
These are the works of Satan. Has some woman done something against you? You go to the sorceress. Has something else happened? To the sorceress. Did a man refuse to take your daughter as his wife? To the sorceress. Did something else fail to happen? To the sorceress. You cast binding spells, and people are bound. And you are a fool for trying to bind others. You bound the others, and the devil bound both you and them. Sorcery is a form of terror.
Someone may ask, “And how can a person defend himself?” If he is in a right relationship with Christ, the devil cannot harm him. Sorcery takes hold of people who have no relationship with the Church or the Mysteries—people who do not go to Holy Confession, do not receive Holy Communion, do not fast, and do not exercise self-restraint. Those are the people sorcery can seize. People cooperate with the devil
against another person.
Consider Saint Justina. Read the life of Saint Cyprian—who had been a sorcerer, and a highly learned one, not like the ridiculous sorcerers we have today—and of Saint Justina. You will see that he could not bewitch Saint Justina and make her marry the man who desired her. This caused him to understand that he was not all-powerful, but that Someone stood above him with far greater power, since he could not bring her under his control. Many people who claim that they have been bewitched, or that someone has bewitched their son or daughter, prevented their wedding, or kept them from having children, go to a witch to have the spell broken. They go to the devil so that the devil may undo the devil’s own sorcery. And the devil may undo the sorcery affecting the body, but he binds the soul. Do you understand? The Church acknowledges that sorcery is real.
The Church has prayers that break the bonds of sorcery over both body and soul. A sorcerer may break the spell affecting the body: the young man gets back on his feet, the young woman recovers, or the woman conceives a child—but the sorcerer lays hold of the soul. This is where people go wrong. If you go to the Church seeking her prayers, and if those prayers are to have power over your affliction, you must fast, go to Holy Confession, begin having children, return what you have stolen, and ask forgiveness from those with whom you are not at peace, and so on. But we are unwilling to do these things. Instead, we pay a sorcerer or a witch two or three thousand to make us well. And so, day after day, we go off in crowds to the devil. Bodies rise, but souls fall. It is better for your bodily self to waste away like a bar of soap than for you to be lost spiritually.
Those who cooperate with Satan bind people through Satan’s help. Today, especially around the cities, perhaps thirty, forty, or fifty percent of the people are cooperating with the devil. A person cooperates with the devil to harm someone else out of jealousy, envy, or self-interest. Another area in which Satan works is the evil eye. We see many women, especially, claiming to remove it. They do not free the body from the evil eye; they cast the soul into delusion. The Church has prayers against the evil eye, yet we go to Mrs. Katina or Mrs. Panayiota with their supposedly holy remedies. Seriously? What are you, a priest? When were you sanctified? If that is so, we should cut a piece from your dress and wear it as an amulet!
Are you so holy that the devil obeys you and flees? This is an operation of Satan—an operation of Satan. “But I say the Our Father.” No hook catches a fish without bait. The devil wants you to put the Our Father on it as bait, but the hook itself belongs to him.
Whether or not you say the Our Father and all those other prayers, he will still pretend to flee. He withdraws deliberately, so that the other person will think the Church has no power but Mrs. Panayiota does, and so that she herself will begin to believe, “Look what I can do!” Do you understand? And none of these things have been confessed; they have never been brought to Holy Confession. The devil keeps them all and holds on to them. He has a portfolio, a file on every person, and one day he will present it. You will see him come loaded down and then unload it all onto the scales of God’s justice. As I have told you before, this subject can never be exhausted.
There are so many subjects. I will simply conclude here. If anyone wants to ask Christ for something more, may Christ grant it to him, so that he may free himself from these snares. The devil is a formidable adversary. I pray that you may be kept safe. How, then, can a person overcome him in general? Saint Anthony gives the answer.
When Saint Anthony was asked how a person could escape the snares of Satan, he replied, “Only through humility.”

ο αρχηγός της, όσο και η μητέρα του αρχηγού της, έχουν κενό μνημείο. Ο τάφος ο κενός δείχνει ότι κάτι παραπάνω γίνεται εδώ. Όλους τους άλλους ο τάφος τούς κράτησε κάτω. Όλους τους πάπες, όλους τους νεωτεριστάς, αυτοί που φτιάξανε εκκλησίες, είναι στον τάφο τους, μέσα στο σάβανό τους, καθ’ ολοκληρίαν. Μόνον ο Χριστός μας και η Παναγία μας έχουν κενά μνημεία. Και θα φωνάζουν αυτά πάντοτε ότι εδώ είναι η αλήθεια, και όσοι πιστεύουν σε αυτούς θα αναστηθούν για αυτή μια ημέρα, παρότι οφείλουμε ένα κοινό γραμμάτιο όλος ο κόσμος, καθώς τι είμεθα από χώμα, να πληρώσουμε εκεί. Αναφορικώς με τη Θεότητα του Πνεύματος του Αγίου, που μας λένε και διατείνονται ότι είναι αύρα, ότι είναι πνοή του Θεού, αστεία πράγματα, όχι Θεός. Τι έγινε;
Μπορούσε το κάθε μέντιουμ να τους βγάζει από εκεί πέρα; Ποιος τους φέρει και ποιος τους επιστρέφει; Γιατί το βλέπετε που είναι λιγάκι κουτό, λιγάκι ανόητο, και εντούτοις υπάρχουν πολλά θύματα, πολλά θύματα υπάρχουν. Δεν είναι το πρόσωπο που ζητάς, είναι άλλος. Τα τραπεζάκια και λοιπά, όλα αυτά είναι έργα δικά του. Αυτός κρύπτεται πίσω, όπως κρύπτεται πίσω και από αυτούς οι οποίοι ακούνε φωνές και γράφουνε. Ακούνε και γράφουνε, κάποιος τους μιλάει. Ποιος είναι αυτός που σου μιλάει; Η Παναγία; Σοβαρά; Σου έδειξε την ταυτότητα, την είδες; Ο Άγιος Νικόλαος; Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης; Πού το ξέρεις ότι είναι; Τι είναι; Έπιασε ένα σταθμό, παραδείγματι, στο καντράν εκεί πέρα, έπιασε ένα σταθμό στο ραδιόφωνο. Τι είναι; Τάση είναι; Κίνα είναι; Μπάρι είναι; Αθήνα είναι; Βελιγράδι είναι;
Θα της κάνει την επίσκεψη η Παναγία, να την χαιρετήσει. Πράγματι, όπως και γρηγορότερα, παρουσιάζεται η Παναγία και άρχισε να της ομιλεί. Όταν άρχισε να της ομιλεί, θυμήθηκε αυτή αυτό που της είχε πει ο Γέροντας και άρχισε να ψάλλει το «Χαίρε, κεχαριτωμένη Μαρία, ο Κύριος μετά σου, ευλογημένος ο καρπός της κοιλίας σου» και Καθ' ην στιγμήν έψαλε αυτά, ακούστε τι ακούστηκε: «Σκάσε, μωρή!» Αυτή ήταν η απάντηση της Παναγίας. Ο Γέρων, μόλις είπε έτσι, ήξερε ότι είναι πλανεμένη και τη γελάει ο διάβολος. Γιατί αυτοί πιάνουνε πουλιά στον αέρα στο Άγιον Όρος. Τι, έχουμε το διάβολο κάθε μέρα, βγάζουνε τα μάτια τους με αυτό. Αλλά πώς να τη βοηθήσει όμορφα να το καταλάβει;
